Today we are releasing 3DMark Wild Life Extreme, a more demanding cross-platform benchmark for comparing the graphics performance of mobile computing devices such as Windows notebooks, Always Connected PCs powered by Windows 10 on Arm, Apple Mac computers powered by the M1 chip, and the next generation of smartphones and tablets.
3DMark Wild Life Extreme is a new cross-platform benchmark for Apple, Android and Windows devices. Run Wild Life Extreme to test and compare the graphics performance of the latest Windows notebooks, Always Connected PCs powered by Windows 10 on Arm, Apple Mac computers powered by the M1 chip, and the next generation of smartphones and tablets.
3DMark Wild Life Extreme includes new effects, enhanced geometry and more particles, making it over three times more demanding than the Wild Life benchmark. The test uses a 3840 × 2160 (4K UHD) rendering resolution before scaling the content to the display.
Wild Life Extreme uses the Vulkan API on Android and Windows. On iOS and Mac, it uses Metal. On Windows 10 on Arm, it uses DirectX 12. You can compare scores across platforms and across APIs.

3DMark Wild Life использует передовые методы визуализации и эффекты постобработки, которые возможны на современных мобильных устройствах. Wild Life построен на низкоуровневом графическом API Vulkan на ПК с Windows и устройствах Android. А на iOS использует API Metal. При этом результаты тестов всех платформ можно сравнивать друг с другом.
Графический тест Wild Life разработан для того же класса оборудования, что и 3DMark Night Raid, но использует графический API Vulkan, а не DirectX 12. 3DMark WildLife Benchmark Shows iPhones Thrashing Androids But Apple Throttles Hard
The standard WildLife test is designed to give feedback on how a game performs over a short period of time. With mobile games, people typically play in brief spurts when they find some free time; be it on the bus, on the subway, or a quick battle royale session on your lunch break, but not always.
The 3DMark WildLife Stress Test, on the other hand, shows how a device performs over a longer stretch of time, and takes note of performance degradation that can crop up due to increased heat levels and throttling (which we’ll get to a bit later in this article). As UL explains, «Instead of producing a single score, the main result from the stress test is a chart that shows you how the device’s performance changed during the test.»
When running on Android devices or Windows PCs, WildLife uses the Vulkan API. On iOS devices (like the iPhone and iPad), WildLife uses Apple’s Metal API.
Given that we make heavy use of 3DMark benchmarks for our smartphone reviews, we decided to take a look at how some smartphones that we have in our lab (both new and old) stack up against each other. The results were somewhat surprising, but we caution you to reserve your opinion and final analysis until you’ve digested the next segment of our testing efforts here as well. Alas, without further ado.
We decided to run WildLife Unlimited, which allows each device to run as fast as it can independent of the given refresh rate thanks to off-screen rendering; the standard WildLife test is capped by the device’s refresh rate. What we can clearly see here is that the GPU in Apple’s line of iPhones is an absolute performance monster, as it’s easily able to dispatch its Android rivals in this short-burst benchmark.
What’s remarkable is just how far the divide is between the iPhones and flagship Android devices. To put things in perspective, the iPhone XR, which was at the bottom rung of Apple’s 2018 flagship smartphone lineup, put up a score of 5424, which is 42 percent faster than the OnePlus 8/8T. The iPhone XR’s performance was also 27 percent faster than the mighty ASUS ROG Phone 3 in X-Mode.
The iPhone 11 Pro, Apple’s 2019 flagship device, really threw down the gauntlet with a score of 7800, more than doubling the performance that the OnePlus 8/OnePlus 8T could muster, while outpacing the ROG Phone 3 (X-Mode) by 87 percent. The spread could grow even wider with the iPhone 12 family, as recent leaked benchmarks show the A14 Bionic outpacing flagship Android phones by as much as 60 percent in single-threaded synthetic CPU tests. And Apple is claiming up to a 50 percent boost over its Android rivals in GPU benchmarks.
We’ve reached out to UL Benchmarks with a few questions to better understand the company’s new benchmark, how it measures and weights performance, as well as how it utilizes these 3D graphics APIs.
But there’s a LOT more to the picture here than just these performance runs.
Where things really get interesting is with the WildLife Stress Test Unlimited, which we alluded to earlier. Since this test take a lot longer to run (20 minutes versus roughly a minute for WildLife Unlimited), we were paying close attention to any performance drop-offs, and this is where the iPhones showed their Achilles heel.
During its WildLife Stress Test Unlimited run, the iPhone 11 Pro put in a best loop score of 7945, which was of course recorded on its first run. However, once it completed that first run, performance dropped off considerably over the next 19 minutes until 20 runs were completed. By the end, exhausted from thermal throttling, the iPhone 11 Pro put in a final run score of 4106. That puts its benchmark stability at 51.7 percent.
Apple iPhone SE & iPhone XS Max Throttle Hard As Well
Taking into account the steep drop-off in performance, the iPhone 11 Pro’s lowest benchmark run score was still higher than most of its Android rivals. However, the overachieving ASUS ROG Phone 3 in X-Mode was able to topple the iPhone 11 Pro’s worst run and it should be noted that iPhone’s performance levels off and stays down at the 4K mark after about the 13 minute mark. Speaking of the Android competition, the OnePlus 8/8T barely encountered any thermal throttling during the 20-minute exercise, posting a benchmark stability rating of over 99 percent. Regardless, the performance picture is completely different in the stress test, and our OnePlus 8 score on its fastest loop is much more on par with the iPhone 11 Pro after just a few runs. Of note is that each run is only about a minute in length, and people usually don’t game for just a minute at a time obviously, but likely over several minutes at least.
So the question is, how do you game on your smartphone? Do you game for any more than say 10 minutes at a time? If so, make sure you consider how your phone holds up and not just what a one-time benchmark score might show. The picture for the iPhone 11 Pro here got a lot less rosy after a few halo runs.

Компания UL Benchmarks выпустила 3DMark Wild Life — новый межплатформенный тест для сравнения графической производительности новейших ноутбуков, планшетов и смартфонов.
3DMark Wild Life использует передовые методы визуализации и эффекты постобработки, которые возможны на современных мобильных устройствах. We’re thrilled to announce the release of 3DMark Wild Life, a new cross-platform benchmark for comparing the graphics performance of the latest Apple, Android and Windows devices.
Wild Life offers two ways to test mobile devices: a quick benchmark that measures instant performance and a longer stress test that shows you how your device performs under longer periods of heavy load.
3DMark Wild Life, a cross-platform GPU benchmark
3DMark Wild Life is a new cross-platform benchmark for Apple, Android and Windows devices. You can use 3DMark Wild Life to test and compare the graphics performance of the latest smartphones, tablets and notebooks.
Wild Life measures GPU performance by rendering a demanding game-like scene in real time. The faster the scene runs, the higher your benchmark score.
3DMark Wild Life shows the advanced rendering techniques and post-processing effects that are possible on modern mobile devices. Wild Life uses the Vulkan API on Android devices and Windows PCs. On iOS devices, it uses the Metal API.
Two ways to test GPU performance
Run the 3DMark Wild Life benchmark to measure a device’s ability to provide instant performance for a short period of time. This test mirrors mobile games in which the gameplay loop is a series of short bursts of activity.
The 3DMark Wild Life Stress Test is a longer test that shows how a device performs under longer periods of heavy load. It mirrors mobile games in which the gameplay loop is a longer, more immersive experience. Instead of producing a single score, the main result from the stress test is a chart that shows you how the device’s performance changed during the test. This chart can help you understand how your device manages performance and heat during heavy use.
The first screenshot on the left in the image above shows a device that offers steady performance with no throttling. The middle screenshot shows aggressive performance throttling after a short time due to heat build-up under heavy load. The last screenshot on the right shows gradual throttling down from the peak to a lower level of sustained performance.
The benchmark that gives you more than a score
3DMark is a benchmarking app that gives you more than a score. With its unique charts, lists and rankings, 3DMark gives you unrivaled insights into the performance of Android and iOS devices.
Discover real-world performance
Average benchmark scores are good for comparing devices, but 3DMark goes further. For each device, a unique chart shows you the full range of results submitted by other 3DMark users around the world.
In the chart below, for example, you can see that all the results tend to fall in the same narrow range. This means the device performs consistently even when the benchmark is running under less than ideal conditions.
The next chart, however, shows a different performance profile. There are four distinct peaks spread over a wide range of scores. A chart with this shape tells you that the device does not perform consistently in real-world use.
The rightmost peak shows the score the device can achieve under ideal conditions. The two middle peaks tell you that this device slows down when hot or when multitasking. Many devices tend to reduce performance in steps, and those steps are visible in the chart. The leftmost peak shows you that the device’s real-world performance can sometimes be far below the optimum.

Important notes
When comparing scores across platforms, note that the test results reflect both hardware and software. APIs with low overhead, such as Metal and Vulkan, can deliver more performance than OpenGL ES even on devices with similar hardware.

The performance score for a device shown on this page is the median of all the results submitted by users with the same device. For popular models, the median performance score is calculated from thousands of benchmark results.
Some people test their device under less than ideal conditions. For example, the device may be too hot or have other apps running in the background. These results tend to lower the average score, but we include them in the calculation because it provides a better indication of real-world performance. You may get a higher score when testing your own device under optimal conditions.
The battery life shown for a device is the median of all benchmark results for that model. Battery life is very sensitive to changes in screen brightness. While we recommending calibrating the screen brightness to 200 cd/m2 (nits) when testing battery life, this setting cannot be enforced by the benchmark app. As a result, the range of battery life scores submitted by the public is much wider than that seen when testing under controlled conditions.
The popularity rating is based on the total number of benchmark results submitted across all tests in the last 30 days. This page is updated daily.

3DMark Wild Life Extreme is a new cross-platform benchmark for Apple, Android and Windows devices. Run Wild Life Extreme to test and compare the graphics performance of the latest Windows notebooks, Always Connected PCs powered by Windows 10 on Arm, Apple Mac computers powered by the M1 chip, and the next generation of smartphones and tablets.
3DMark Wild Life Extreme includes new effects, enhanced geometry and more particles, making it over three times more demanding than the Wild Life benchmark. The test uses a 3840 × 2160 (4K UHD) rendering resolution before scaling the content to the display.
Wild Life Extreme uses the Vulkan API on Android and Windows. On iOS and Mac, it uses Metal. On Windows 10 on Arm, it uses DirectX 12. You can compare scores across platforms and across APIs.

“What does my 3DMark score mean for real-world game performance?”
3DMark has always taken a game-like approach to benchmarking, but, in the past, it’s been hard for gamers to make the connection between 3DMark scores and game frame rates.
In November 2020, we added a new feature to the 3DMark results screen that shows you the frame rates you can expect in a selection of popular games.
These game performance estimates are powered by extensive data from our in-house testing. This page explains how we estimate game performance from 3DMark benchmark scores.
Estimated game performance in 3DMark
3DMark estimates game performance from your benchmark score. In the current release, you can choose from five popular games. For each game, you can choose either 1080p Ultra or 1440p Ultra settings. Ultra means using the game’s highest visual quality settings. Ray tracing options, if available, are turned off.
How accurate are the game performance estimates?
3DMark shows the average frame rate you can expect in the selected game. The frame rate is an estimate rather than an exact guarantee of performance.
Frame rate estimates, in frames per second (FPS), are rounded down to the nearest multiple of five, e.g. 60+, 65+, 70+, 75+, etc.
Frame rates can vary within a game depending on the level or mode. Player actions, especially in multi-player games, can result in frame rate variance.
Game updates, driver updates and system updates may also affect performance. We retest games and rebuild our models when an update significantly affects performance. Please note that there can be noticeable performance differences between versions of a game.
You may see small differences in frame rate estimates from different benchmarks on the same system. For example, the frame rates estimates from a Time Spy score may not exactly match the estimates from a Fire Strike score.
PC performance testing at UL
UL works with consumer electronics retailers to test and categorize PCs of all types. We are currently working with more than fifteen major retailers worldwide including Currys PC World, CyberPowerPC, Dell, Elkjøp, iBuyPower and Lenovo.
Every year, UL tests hundreds of PC systems for its retail partners. We test the performance of each system with a selection of benchmarks and popular games.
This comprehensive performance data enables us to accurately model the relationship between 3DMark scores and game frame rates.
The game testing process
We conduct game testing on a wide selection of gaming hardware that covers the range of popular CPUs and GPUs found in modern gaming PCs.
We test each game at 1080p and 1440p resolution using the game’s highest visual quality settings. This means either choosing the maximum fidelity preset or manually turning all the graphics settings to the highest level. Ray tracing options, if available, are disabled to ensure consistent estimates across all hardware from entry-level to the high-end.
Each game is tested using either a built-in benchmark, if available, or a live gameplay scenario. Our game testing experts determine a suitable gameplay scenario for each game. A good scenario covers common gameplay, is reasonably demanding, and is easy to reproduce and repeat on other systems. The length of the test scenario varies by game. The minimum duration is three minutes.
The gameplay scenario is repeated on all systems. Frame rate data is collected during the test and checked for consistency between systems.
Game performance estimation process
We use the game testing data to identify the components that determine game performance at each resolution and settings level.
For 3DMark, we focus on games that are GPU-bound. This means that the frame rate in the game depends only on GPU performance. This makes the data easier to understand and model when relating benchmark scores to game performance.
The chart below shows the relationship between 3DMark Time Spy Graphics score and average frame rate in Fortnite. Each orange dot shows the performance of a different system tested by UL.
You can see from the chart that a PC that scores 4,000 in the 3DMark Time Spy Graphics test can run Fortnite at 50 FPS on average at 1440p with the highest graphics quality settings. A 3DMark score of 6,000 translates to an average of 70 FPS in Fortnite. A score of 12,000 translates to 140 FPS.
The charts below show the correlation between 3DMark Time Spy Graphics score and average frame rate in Apex Legends and Red Dead Redemption 2.
It’s these correlations that enable 3DMark to estimate game frame rates.
We check the correlation between game performance and benchmark scores for each combination of resolution and visual quality settings separately. Any anomalous results are retested before they are used in statistical modeling.
Estimating game performance for multi-GPU systems
For games that support AMD CrossFire or NVIDIA SLI, game performance scaling with multi-GPU systems is tested, checked and modeled separately. After benchmarking a multi-GPU system, the game performance estimates on the 3DMark result screen will reflect the use of multi-GPU, if supported by the game.
Most games do not benefit from having a second GPU in the system. If a game does not support multi-GPU, the performance estimate is based on the equivalent single-GPU system.
How can I see frame rate estimates for other games?
We plan to update the game list several times a year. You can expect to see a mix of best-selling games and popular new releases, especially those that have demanding system requirements.

Apple iPhone 13 Review
Each benchmark score shown on this page is the median of all the results submitted by users for this device. For popular models, the median scores are calculated from thousands of benchmark results.
Some people test their device under less than ideal conditions. For example, the device may be too hot or have other apps running in the background. These results tend to lower the average score, but we include them in the calculation because it provides a better indication of real-world performance. You may get a higher score when testing your own device under optimal conditions.
The battery life shown for a device is the median of all benchmark results for that model. Battery life is very sensitive to changes in screen brightness. While we recommending calibrating the screen brightness to 200 cd/m2 (nits) when testing battery life, this setting cannot be enforced by the benchmark app. As a result, the range of battery life scores submitted by the public is much wider than that seen when testing under controlled conditions.
The popularity rating is based on the total number of benchmark results submitted across all tests in the last 30 days. This page is updated daily.

Disappointed it doesn’t play the movie
I get that this is a render test, but it’s a big disappointment that it just shows you a tiny array of little frames instead of actually playing it out at whatever frame rate full screen.
Benchmark won’t start
I use 3DMark extensively for my PC since I overclock my rigs and I love their benchmarks and stress tests. When I saw their new mobile device test I decided to give it a try to see just how bad my aging iPhone 7Plus was performing.
Unfortunately, the benchmark won’t get past the loading screen of the character holding the scanner or whatever that device is. The loading bar at the bottom won’t show any progress at all and the app will just sit in the loading screen indefinitely until I force the app to close. It does this for both the regular and Unlimited offerings.
I’ve tried restarting the app, restarting the phone, and reinstalling the app. Nothing works. It’s possible there is something wrong with my phone but it runs everything else I install on it without any problems. This is the only app I have on it that is not working correctly.
Could you please update to the latest version of the 3DMark Wild Life benchmark app and try running the test again? Please let us know if the issue persists.
