Story behind the song

Lead singer Amy Lee recalled that she wrote the song about her future husband Josh Hartzler when they first met. \»We were not dating or anything, and we didn’t actually begin to date until years later.\» [1]

From 2003 to 2005, she had a relationship with Seether frontman Shaun Morgan, so many fans assumed the song was about him. [2] But, actually, the song was recorded in 2002.

Amy stated that she was going through a hard time in her life and the first lines of the lyrics reflect her mood:

How can you see into my eyes like open doors?
\nLeading you down into my core where I’ve become so numb

She stated in the interview to The Boston Phoenix, \»I was in a relationship and I was completely unhappy. But I was hiding it. I was being completely abused and I was trying to cover it up; I wouldn’t even admit it to myself.\» [3]

Josh Hartzler and Amy Lee got married in 2007. [2]

The band’s lead guitarist Ben Moody described his own vision of the song’s subject, \»‘Bring Me To Life’ is about discovering something or someone that awakens a feeling inside them that they’ve never had before. You discover there is a world that is bigger than just your safe bubble.\» [2]

The male vocals for this song were provided by Paul McCoy from 12 Stones. [2] A couple of years later, Amy Lee revealed that the record label had refused to release the song as a single unless she agreed to make a duet with a male vocalist.

It was presented to me as, \»You’re a girl singing in a rock band, there’s nothing else like that out there, nobody’s going to listen to you. You need a guy to come in and sing back-up for it to be successful.\» [4]

The song got a massive airplay when it was featured on the soundtrack of the 2003 movie Daredevil. \»Bring Me to Life\» peaked within the top 10 of more than 15 countries.

The band won in the category for Best Hard Rock Performance at the 46th Grammy Awards. The song was also nominated for Best Rock Song but lost to \»Seven Nation Army\» by The White Stripes.

Music videos

Official music video

The music video was directed by Philipp Stölzl and was the first for the band. In the video, Lee wakes up in a tall building, steps out the window and walks along the ledge. Her bandmates are playing in a distant room, Amy tries to join them and occasionally falls. [2] But it appears to be just a bad dream.

She admitted in 2016, that this is her favorite video, \»We shot for 17 hours 2 days in a row, my knees were bruised and bleeding from hanging off that balcony, and our flight home was a nightmare and I slept on an airport floor, but it was amazing.\» [5]

Synthesis version

Evanescence presented a reworked version of the song on their 2017 album \»Synthesis.\»

Live version

Lead guitarist Ben Moody left the band while they were touring to promote the album in 2003. He was replaced by Terry Balsamo, who was a guitarist from the band Cold. During the years in Evanescence, rhythm guitarist John LeCompt performed the vocal part of Paul McCoy for the live performances.

Notable covers

Katherine Jenkins presented a cover to the song on her 2009 album \»Believe.\»

Chris Daughtry covered the song for the soundtrack to 2016 musical The Passion, based on Jesus Christ’s last days. Daughtry played Judas Iscariot.

Gear and settings

Guitars

The guitars for \»Fallen\» were recorded at Mad Dog Studios, in Burbank.

Ben Moody

Ben Moody admitted that sound engineer Jay Baumgardner lent him Les Paul and Gibson SG guitars for the recording of the album. [6]

Though, for the live performances and in the official video, he used his Jackson DKMG.

John LeCompt

John LeCompt used several ESP guitars for live performances, most notably LTD Viper-301, which also appears in the official video.

Francesco DiCosmo

Francesco DiCosmo played bass guitar during the recording of the album as the session musician. [7]

He didn’t specify bass models, which he used for the recording of the album, but it’s known that he owns Fodera NYC 5-string Bass and Fender Squire 5-String Jazz Bass. [8]

After the album release, Will Boyd started touring with the band as bass guitarist.

Amps and effects

Ben Moody

Ben Moody stated that he used Marshall and Mesa/Boogie heads with an old Mesa/Boogie cabinet, \»It was an old cabinet that was tried-and-true on rock records. It was a no-brainer to use it. I know it was used on Papa Roach and, I think, Staind. The heads were just the JCM 800, which was all souped up and modified, and a Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier Trem-o-Verb.\» [6] All these amps also belong to Jay Baumgardner.

Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier Trem-o-Verb.

For the first time in his career, producer Dave Fortman recorded guitars through two amps. He admitted, \»I doubted it forever and then I decided during the Evanescence recording that I would actually A-B it and see if there was really that much of a difference.\» Marshall amps were recorded for both left and right sides but were EQ’ed heavier than usual. \»Then I A-B’d it by using a Mesa on the left side. The differences tonally and with the different frequencies in the two different amps really do create a larger stereo feel. It was amazing to hear.\» Fortman recorded guitars with two Shure 57s, running them through Neve 1081 preamps straight to Pro Tools. [6]

John LeCompt

John LeCompt used Line 6 Flextone head with Marshall 4×12 cab during the live performances.

Francesco DiCosmo

According to Dave Fortman, Francesco DiCosmo had a \»really off-the-wall amp,\» which was recorded with a U67 set back six or seven inches from his cabinet and through an Avalon U5 DI/pre into Pro Tools.

It isn’t clear, which \»off-the-wall\» amp was used for the recording session, but Francesco stated, that he owns Ampeg SVT 4-Pro amp with Ampeg 8×10 Classic Cab. [8]

Amp settings

Tuning

Guitars: standard tuning (E A D G B E).

5-string bass guitar: standard tuning (B E A D G).

Song key

The song is written in the key of E minor.

Guitar techniques

The song is mostly based on power chords, but it’s important to get adjusted to the right strumming patterns.

Song breakdown

The song has the following structure:

The song starts with the intro, which consists of a sole piano line.

This piano line is continued in the first verse. But in the middle of the verse, the piano line stops, and electric and bass guitars enter with a volume swell. Guitar lines in verses are mostly played with power chords but also involve artificial harmonics at the end of some passages.

The first chorus is entirely based on power chords.

The second verse doesn’t have a piano line and entirely played with guitar and bass lines.

The second chorus is longer than the first one and leads the song to the bridge.

The bridge can be divided into two parts. The first one features Amy Lee’s vocal line emphasized with the bass line (which involves hammer-ons) and string ensemble, while the second part presents the dialogue between Amy and Paul, powered by guitar strumming.

The final chorus doesn’t involve anything special from the standpoint of used techniques.

The outro contains the piano line from the intro backed by a string ensemble.
