You know what’s my favorite genre in anime? Well it’s an easy guess: lice of life — the purest and most life-affirming genre there is.

If you asked me the same thing 10 years ago, I would’ve said I preferred “edgy, brutal, and deep” shows. Or just the usual shonen titles.

But things change.

I’ve grown up, my taste has too, and good anime doesn’t always have to include big fights and long arcs.

Anime where “literally nothing happens” isn’t devoid of value. It can actually be extremely compelling! You just have to know where to look.

With this in mind, let me show you my picks for the best slice of life anime of all time.

50. Honobono Log

Starting off the list is Honobono Log, a short series that doesn’t look like typical anime.

It’s more like the typical cutesy Korean illustrations you find on social media.

So what do I like about this?

For one, it’s short and sweet.

You can finish all 10 episodes in 20 minutes — that’s how short it is.

Yet Honobono Log presents all the tender yet very much ordinary moments of people in love, reminding us that it’s not all about grand romantic gestures.

49. Demi-chan wa Kataritai (Interviews with Monster Girls)

Should all monsters go about eating humans and ravaging cities?

In Demi-chan wa Kataritai we have half-human, half-monster entities interacting with perfectly ordinary humans in school.

It’s an odd world, to say the least.

What I love about this anime is its theme of tolerance and acceptance, that differences in physical appearance are just that — we all still share the same emotions that make us human.

As the MC Tetsuo Takahashi gets to know more about a bratty vampire or an introverted snow woman, you can learn a thing or two about not judging a book by its cover.

48. Isekai Shokudō (Restaurant to Another World)

Are you tired of all the seemingly endless barrage of generic isekai entries? I don’t blame you.

Ever since Sword Art Online took the world by storm, studios have been on the lookout for the next big hit.

In contrast to the usual action-packed isekai, Isekai Shokudo is about the joys of eating and discovering gastronomic pleasures.

And you know why it works?

It’s because the diners of this otherwise typical Japanese restaurant are all from the fantasy world: elves, faeries, dragons, leonine warriors, sorcerers, knights, biped reptiles.

It makes you appreciate the meals and snacks you have, no matter how cheap or common they are.

47. Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka? (Is the Order a Rabbit?)

Often referred to as GochiUsa, this is the first CGDCT (Cute Girls Doing Cute Things) entry on my list.

It doesn’t rewrite the subgenre. But the main characters are effectively endearing.

Plus, GochiUsa isn’t concentrated in school.

Five of the young girls are waitresses, so they also have “adventures” in the cafe and around town.

Almost everything is normal in their world, except for the small talking rabbit of Chino Kafuu.

If anything, GochiUsa would be better off without that one fanservice episode.

46. Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru! (This Art Club Has a Problem!)

I didn’t expect to like Konobi as much as I did.

When I saw the teaser before its 2016 release, I found the art plain — and it was throughout the series.

But like any good SoL title, Konobi had a cast that meshed well together, with Collette and Yumeko being surprise favorites.

You may get tired of Ari getting flustered around Yuusuke, and this is more energetic and comedic than relaxing.

But some jokes (like Yuuseke’s preference for 2D waifus) always make me chuckle.

45. Gabriel DropOut

Here’s the thing: I love online RPGs.

So when Gabriel DropOut came out and featured an angel who was supposed to help humankind but ends up playing video games, I knew I was in for a good ride.

The fallen angel Gabriel was the hook.

But what kept me watching was Satanichia, an adorable demon who’s often put in bad situations.

There’s nothing apocalyptic about Gabriel DropOut, but there’s something appealing with seeing cute demons and angels in school, acting like the complete opposite of what they were born to be.

44. Amaama to Inazuma (Sweetness & Lightning)

Amaama to Inazuma isn’t about cute schoolgirls.

Instead it’s about a widowed father wishing to be a good father to his kid — and that’s where a schoolgirl and cooking come into play.

Kouhei doesn’t know how to cook. But he wants his little girl Tsumugi to grow up healthy.

This leads him to his student, Kotori Iida, who has a family restaurant. Kotori herself isn’t good at cooking, but she has the resources to help Kouhei.

This isn’t a cooking show (although there are many).

It’s a show that uses cooking to depict the importance of home-cooked meals, social bonding, and of being part of a family. Even if you aren’t all biologically related.

43. Saint☆Onii-san (Saint☆Young Men)

Can two people of different religions live together in peace?

What if those two people were the key figures themselves?

In Saint Onii-san, we have no less than Jesus Christ and Gautama Buddha living together in Tokyo, with no apocalyptic event surrounding them.

They just go to saunas and check out clothing stores.

It’s an odd series, but simply putting two iconic characters in a mundane setting makes it stand out. Definitely check out the nearly 90-minute movie if you have the time.

42. Mangaka-san to Assistant-san to The Animation

Mangaka-san to Assistant-san to is, well, from a manga series.

The source material is relatively popular, which is probably due in part to its ecchi element.

The manga artist Yuuki Aito loves drawing panties and is surrounded by women.

Yes, this is a harem show. But hear me out: It’s entertaining.

And it helps a lot that it’s just 14 minutes long per episode.

Mangaka-san to Assistant-san to is average in terms of technical aspects.

But like Prison School, it goes all out in its comedic pervertedness, producing some of the most embarrassing anime scenes of all time.

41. Kiniro Mosaic (KINMOZA!)

If you’re a regular on Twitch or just familiar with internet culture, you’ve likely heard people say “ayaya” repeatedly.

That meme’s from Kiniro Mosaic’s Karen Kujou, who’s also the source of the “desu” song.

Yet Kiniro Mosaic is more than cutesy memes.

It’s an undoubtedly sweet CGDCT series featuring girls who know a thing or two about British and Japanese culture.

Don’t let Karen steal the show for you.

Characters like Oomiya Shinobu and Inokuma Youko have shining moments as well.

Also if you liked season 1 then you’ll be pleased to know season 2 manages to get even better!

40. Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun (My Little Monster)

I love this show.

I wish I could place this higher, but SoL is a difficult genre for me to organize because I have so many favorites.

If I could have one anime continue until it has adapted the entire source material, I’d choose this in a heartbeat.

I just think the character dynamics here are amazing — and I love the fact that Haru has a chicken named Nagoya.

Simply put, Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun is school and dating life done right.

Give the soundtrack a listen too. It’s one of the best I’ve heard from anime in the past decade.

39. Azumanga Daioh

There are a few anime series that are regarded as pioneers in their respective genres.

The 2002 series Azumanga Daioh is one of the first-ever successful slice-of-life (and CGDCT) anime out there.

Perhaps the key factor to its achievements is that Azumanga Daioh had a complete adaptation.

In other words, everything in the manga is in the anime. Covering everything from freshman year to graduation.

Later on in my list, you’ll be seeing more shows that this anime had influenced.

Plus did you know that the waifu meme originated here?

38. Lucky Star

Here’s another classic SoL and CGDCT anime, with one of the most infectious opening themes ever.

The song alone is great, but it even has an entire dance sequence otakus couldn’t help but cover.

What do I love the most about Lucky Star?

Everything is delightful. But Konata Izumi absolutely steals the show every time she’s in a scene — and it helps that she’s also an avid otaku and video gamer like me.

The humor here isn’t for everyone, and some may feel that scenes drag out, but Lucky Star will always be one of the early shows that catapulted Kyoto Animation into fame in the industry.

37. Yuru Yuri (YuruYuri: Happy Go Lily)

Continuing the CGDCT streak we have Yuru Yuri, a three-season title from Doga Kobo.

Srguably known mostly for its talent in creating CGDCT anime.

Also the anime features lesbians, as the title suggests.

But don’t think that this focuses on serious or erotic scenes.

Instead, Yuru Yuri is still a show where girls hang out in their club room and at school in general.

The jokes themselves are funny, but the comedic timing and the delivery all add to the hilarity.

If you also haven’t noticed, anime forums often have reaction faces of two Yuru Yuri characters: Kyouko Toshinou and Akari Akaza.

36. Udon no Kuni no Kiniro Kemari (Poco’s Udon World)

Sweetness & Lightning and Poco’s Udon World often get compared to each other because they feature a guy who takes care of a child.

But here, the kid can transform into a tanuki or the Japanese raccoon dog.

If you often get nostalgic or think back of your childhood, give this a try.

As much as Poko is a cute tanuki boy, the real value comes from Souta.

As he goes back to his hometown, he begins to see his relationship with his father and the townspeople in a whole different light.

Poco’s Udon World is a peaceful show that teaches viewers to appreciate what they have and once had.

35. Genshiken

If you think club members fighting over the appeal of Boys’ Love (BL) anime is entertainment, then I’ve got wonderful news: Genshiken is all about teenagers with a great passion for all things otaku, including BL.

It’s been so long since I’ve seen the first season.

But I know how memorable the characters are.

It feels a bit slow at first, but it feels realistic: New otaku club members being awkward to each other isn’t hard to imagine.

Genshiken has a few OVAs and three seasons, and while the characters age and move on with their lives, the same otaku-specific hilarity has always been there.

34. Danna ga Nani wo Itteiru ka Wakaranai Ken (I Can’t Understand What My Husband Is Saying)

This is arguably my all-time favorite short anime.

With each episode being just three minutes long, you can watch both 13-episode seasons in one sitting — and yet it manages to be more rewarding than far longer anime.

Danna ga Nani wo Itteiru ka Wakaranai Ken centers around the married life of Kaoru and her otaku husband Hajime.

The anime is filled with tropes (many of them being from Neon Genesis Evangelion).

Aside from its relatability, the anime is a standout for how it shifts from absurd hilarity to moments of introspection when either main character realizes how lucky they are to have found each other.

33. Eve no Jikan (Time of Eve)

You can watch the award-winning Time of Eve in six episodes, or just check out the compilation movie.

Regardless, this is a distinct SoL anime for many reasons. Two being its strong sci-fi element and futuristic setting.

Eve no Jikan is an exploration of the Three Laws of Robotics as stated by Isaac Asimov.

Androids are now common, but how should humans treat them?

Are they mere machines to order around or should they be seen as more than that?

If there’s anything to pick up from this, it’s the stellar writing.

The tension and emotion brought out of words and conversations are outstanding.

32. Mitsuboshi Colors

I read the manga way before the adaptation was announced, and I’m happy to say that the anime did it justice.

Silver Link has always been excellent with backgrounds — and they didn’t disappoint here.

Now Mitsuboshi Colors is silly, which is expected of a show about three little girls with a secret base.

But it’s more childlike and less childish.

They just solve little mysteries prepared by the old Daigorou.

Nothing really happens, but it’s cute to see how they’re always thinking of the next fun thing to do.

One episode even has them pondering about the obliteration of humanity for the wrong reasons.

31. Flying Witch

Warning: Flying Witch is relaxing.

Set in the countryside, you follow Makoto Kowata as she travels to Aomori to train in witchcraft.

But don’t think that it’s like Harry Potter or Little Witch Academia.

Yes, you’ll see a mandrake making noise and you’ll see sorcery now and then. But the surrounding nature makes Flying Witch a comforting watch.

It’s like going on a vacation to hang out with your cousins.

JC Staff doesn’t always do well in animating their projects, but they did surprisingly well with Flying Witch.

The visuals are cool to the eyes and the characters’ clothes have this brush effect to them.

30. Sakura Trick

Sakura Trick features girls who kiss and aren’t afraid to show affection toward another.

Yes, it’s yuri. But it’s also not like most yuri anime.

Fanservice is abundant here but it never feels out of place.

The show also isn’t filled with hypersexualized characters and unearned drama.

In contrast, Sakura Trick is lighthearted. The girls here don’t behave like adults — they act and speak like the teenagers they are.

If you’re not a fan of yuri, you may not like this.

On the other hand, this may be the one yuri anime that even non-yuri fans may appreciate because of the amazing cast and solid animation.

29. Kimi to Boku. (You and Me.)

From a group of girls who love fellow girls, we move to a bunch of guys.

They don’t fall for each other but they’re clearly designed for BL enthusiasts — the boys look and behave like the ideal boyfriend.

But seriously, this is a great show about childhood friends (and one guy from Germany) spending their high school days together.

It’s charming, and you can’t help but wish to see them all grow together in college as well.

Once again, JC Staff has blessed SoL fans with a solid, multi-season series.

28. Silver Spoon

Whenever a thread about anime wishlists come up, someone will always say they want a second season of Silver Spoon — and I totally understand why.

It’s such a breath of fresh air from all the typical SoL hits running the same formula.

Yes, the MC is a high school student. But the setting isn’t the city: It’s the countryside.

And while he still goes to school, he’s forced to learn new ways of living.

Here, his supreme knowledge won’t help him in caring for the farm animals and maintaining farming equipment.

In a way it’s a show about cultural relativism. About seeing how and why others prioritize other things in life.

Plus the author of the source material is the same woman who created the iconic Fullmetal Alchemist.

27. Hachimitsu to Clover (Honey and Clover)

Shows like Honey and Clover make me feel happy and sad, with the latter being due to how it only has two seasons and I’m already so invested in the lives of these five individuals forging their own paths to adulthood.

The first season is good.

It introduces us to the gang and we witness how their lives are shaped not only by friendship and love but also the need to “find” oneself, which we all go through in our younger years.

But then the second season pops up and you realize that you’re watching a classic.

I suggest watching this once you’ve landed your first job after high school or college for the maximum feels.

26. Barakamon

This is one of the first series I watched when I returned to seasonal anime — and I didn’t expect to like it this much.

Plus judging from its MAL rating, it seems that many other people have fallen in love with it.

At its core, Barakamon is about accepting failure and learning to move forward.

Seishuu Handa had all the attention to him and his mad calligraphy skills. But then he got the wrong kind of attention when he lost his cool.

Barakamon like a few other great SoL series, is situated in a rural setting.

Here, Seishuu hopes to focus and improve before going back to Tokyo.

But along the way he gets into hilarious scenarios with fujoshi, old people, and most especially a kid named Haru who has a well-known reaction face.

25. New Game!

New Game! has two fantastic seasons, but even the first season was a surprisingly big hit.

But while it’s still a Doga Kobo SoL anime, it added another element that kept a specific part of the crowd glued to the screen: amazing fanservice animation.

You can go to anime forums or Google and search for Aoba and (especially) Hifumi GIFS and you’d find a ton of them.

Besides the eye candy, one can’t help but admire the passion of these girls in making their own video game.

And unlike the typical SoL series, these girls aren’t aimlessly spending their time.

Each episode gives us a peek into what they’ve already achieved and can achieve if they work harder.

24. Usagi Drop (Bunny Drop)

Along with Sweetness and Lightning and Poco’s Udon World, Usagi Drop completes the unintentional “guy-decides-to-take-care-of-a-kid-and-it-changes-his-life” trilogy.

Despite coming out five years earlier than the two to other titles, this 2011 series continues to be the high standard for this extremely specific SoL subgenre.

This is due to its superb source material and Production IG’s keen adaptation — Usagi Drop looks and sounds good to this day.

Just like other seinen, I implore you to catch (or rewatch) this when you’re at least in your 20s.

It’s an effective reminder of how adults can and do change for the better.

23. Grand Blue

A recent release that has shot up to the upper half of the list is Grand Blue.

I expected this before its release — the manga has sold millions of copies and has a huge following.

But what makes this instantly appealing?

For one, the setting is refreshing.

Grand Blue is all about having fun with friends, school, and scuba diving with the Diving Club in the serene coastal town of Izu.

And apart from how the club isn’t just stuck in one room, Grand Blue is about college students, not just high school students.

22. ReLIFE

Like Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun, ReLIFE is one of the SoL shows I’ve been hoping would get a new season.

I’ve seen it at least twice already, and my friend says the manga’s already done and that the end was satisfying.

In contrast, the ReLIFE show ended with a huge cliffhanger, just when things were getting more exciting.

I saw it when I just got out of college, so the anime’s themes of regret and of helping everyone do better hit me hard.

Yes, TMS Entertainment blessed viewers with a four-episode OVA. But I want a return to the main story.

21. Hanasaku Iroha (Hanasaku Iroha: Blossoms for Tomorrow)

Hanasaku Iroha is the first entry of PA Works’ acclaimed “Working” series trilogy, which are all original anime — something I respect and wish we had more of.

Released in 2011, Hanasaku Iroha features the young Ohana Matsumae, whose Tokyo life was turned around when her mom left her.

Now she’s in the countryside and has to work in an inn owned by her grandmother, who actually isn’t fond of her.

Along the way Ohana meets new people and learns to cope with change — because everyone has to deal with change whether we like it or not.

20. Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge (Tanaka-kun is Always Listless)

I gave Tanaka-kun is Always Listless a 10/10 score the first time I watched it — and I haven’t changed my mind since.

This is one of Siver Link’s best anime of all time, and I’m so grateful they took this project on.

Tanaka-kun is Always Listless sounds and looks clean.

And do you know what’s amazing?

The school is based on a real school in Hiroshima.

Tanaka is funny, and I love how he’s this sleepy, lazy dude who’s also adorable, slowly but surely realizing how his behavior affects other people.

The anime features this warm relaxing color palette, and I just feel at ease watching it.

And the rest of the cast, from Oota to Miyano and Shiraishi, have their own scene-stealing moments to boot.

19. Hyouka

“I’m curious” is one of the most popular lines in anime, and that one’s from Hyouka.

It’s been eight years since release yet Hyouka remains one of the most consistently beautiful anime around, solidifying Kyoto Animation’s reputation.

Hyouka is unlike other SoL because of its mystery element.

Together with Chitanda, Mayaka, and Satoshi, Oreki is always solving something.

The mysteries don’t have to be profound. But they all give characters the opportunity to develop and interact.

Even if you don’t like SoL, you should watch Hyouka.

It’s a godsend that never fails from start to finish.

You also deserve to understand why so many people ship Oreki and Chitanda.

18. Sakura-sou no Pet na Kanojo (The Pet Girl of Sakurasou)

I’ve got another JC Staff entry for you.

To be fair, I didn’t love The Pet Girl of Sakurasou when it came out. And I even heard that source material’s ending would disappoint fans of the anime adaptation.

But I have to admit: The Pet Girl of Sakurasou has a solid bunch of characters that actually developed as the series went on.

I’m not a fan of Mashiro, but everyone else from Nanami to Ryuunosuke is great.

It has fanservice and typical romance and comedy. But it also has some genuinely serious moments that make them feel more human than most anime characters.

17. Tamako Market

Like The Pet Girl of Sakurasou, I didn’t have a good impression of Tamako Market.

Despite being a huge fan of SoL, I initially found it to be too mundane.

But with a rewatch and a viewing of the Tamako Love Story movie, I can now fully recommend the show.

Like Hyouka, Tamako Market is a showcase of the “modern” Kyoto Animation.

It’s visually detailed and sports a huge set of supporting characters with their own unique looks and personalities.

This isn’t the best KyoAni SoL, but it’s a solid entry — and there’s even a bride-seeking talking bird.

16. Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou (Daily Lives of High School Boys)

This is, without a doubt, one of the funniest anime of all time.

Daily Lives of High School Boys can’t hold a candle to KyoAni in terms of animation, but its comedic value is off the charts.

I still remember the first episode after all these years: Hidenori, Yoshitake, and Tadakuni telling spooky stories and wearing girls’ clothes — including bras.

And I just know everyone loves the scenes with the literature girl on the riverbank.

For a series with just 12 episodes, it feels like there were way more. Especially because it even dedicates a mini-series for a trio of girls.

15. Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii (Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku)

I’ve mentioned SoL shows featuring high school and college students, urban and rural settings, and a variety of clubs.

What about a focus on office workers?

That’s what Wotakoi brings to the genre (and they don’t look like 10-year-old girls like in New Game).

Wotakoi is the effective office romance I’ve always thought should exist in anime.

It doesn’t have any fanservice because it knows its character dynamics and storytelling are more than enough.

And despite the office setting, this is far from dull.

Like any real adult, the cast members aren’t afraid to look goofy from time to time.

Thanks to the relatively small number of characters, viewers can expect everyone to have a memorable appearance.

14. Working!! (Wagnaria!!)

Right after Wotakoi is another series that involves workers. So much so that it’s called Working!!

With three seasons, an alternative setting, and a 49-minute special, the Working!! franchise has caught my attention for years.

Who knew that the employees of the Wagnaria family restaurant would be this interesting with each passing episode?

If you love SoL but don’t mind a bit of romance and even drama, do check this out.

And don’t mind the number of episodes — this is better watched one or two episodes a day.

13. Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon (Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid)

As much as I love shows like Hyouka and Free!, I also admire when KyoAni goes for a more cartoonish design.

Luckily the studio did that in their adaptation of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid.

This is one of the finest fantasy SoL shows you’ll ever see.

It can go from epic (whenever the women turn into giant dragons and fight it out) and just plain adorable (mostly because of Kanna).

Plus, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid has an infectious OP and also has the acclaimed Naoko Yamada as one of its episode directors.

12. Natsume Yuujinchou (Natsume’s Book of Friends)

With six seasons and a movie, Natsumi Yuujinchou is that rare gem in anime: It got enough attention to warrant more episodes, and critics and fans alike gave it great reviews.

So what makes Natsume’s Book of Friends such a compelling watch?

For one, it’s a supernatural SoL — Natsume and his pal (a feline spirit named Madara) go about their daily lives looking for spirits to free.

Each of these spirits or youkai has a distinct personality and rich story to tell.

Combine that with a relaxing countryside setting and an overall comforting atmosphere for max comfy points.

You’ll be looking for an episode right before you go to sleep.

11. Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki (Wolf Children)

This is the highest-ranking SoL movie on my list.

Yes, other titles here have movies too.

But this is the only one that isn’t primarily a series that just happens to have a compilation or sequel film.

To be honest, I think the very nature of slice of life is why my list is dominated by series.

SoL is about witnessing the seemingly trivial moments of everyday life, and series have a structure that makes me feel that I’ve known the characters for many months or even years.

With that in mind, the fact that Wolf Children nearly made it to the top 10 is a testament to its charm: excellent cinematography, Mamoru Hosoda’s masterful direction, sometimes painful, and oh-so full of heart.

10. Hinamatsuri

I started watching Hinamatsuri when I had spare time in 2019, a year after its release.

I didn’t think it would have alien girls learning the ways of human life, but it was a wild, hilarious ride I won’t forget.

And look, I think that the braggadocious yet kind gangster Nita has solid moments with Hina.

But my favorites in Hinamatsuri are undoubtedly Hitomi and Anzu.

Hitomi, for some reason, becomes a bartender and realizes the troubles of employment and financial independence.

It’s amusing to see a studious student like her suddenly thrown into the adult world.

Then there’s Anzu, who has the best arc in Hinamatsuri.

Through her eyes, viewers realize just how hard it is for the poor to live and survive, and how people shouldn’t take things for granted.

9. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

This is the third final KyoAni entry on my list, which is indicative of how the studio has mastered the art of slice of life.

Is it based around a club? Yes.

Is it like other club-based series? Not really.

First, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya doesn’t show events in chronological order.

It’s completely normal for viewers to be confused, but also entertained once they connect the pieces.

Second, the show has a ton of monologues courtesy of Kyon.

There’s a huge element here that I won’t spoil, but let’s just say it makes everything all the more intriguing.

Not everyone likes the infamous Endless Eight Arc of S2, but both S1 and the movie The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya are downright classics.

And just like Lucky Star, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya had an OP with a viral dance sequence.

8. Uchuu Kyoudai (Space Brothers)

With a whopping 99 episodes, Space Brothers is the longest series in my list.

And there’s no other show like it.

I don’t even know how its producers managed to keep it going for so long.

Granted, the animation isn’t amazing.

You can even say it’s average, or subpar at times. But this isn’t a huge obstacle to get you hooked — the characters are 100% worth investing in.

Think of it: These are two brothers who dreamed of becoming astronauts.

One of them grew up and forgot about it, while the other is already on his way. Space Brothers, then, is about reviving one’s dreams and trying your best in achieving them.

Plus it’s so much more realistic in its approach to space and the near future (it’s set in 2025) than most anime.

7. Yuru Camp (Laid-Back Camp)

Is it proof of recency bias that I included two entries from 2018 in my highest 10 picks?

Perhaps. But how could I not include Hinamatsuri and Yuru Camp when they went all out in terms of character, story, and mood?

As its name implies, Laid-back Camp goes away from any big drama or the stress of the urban jungle, choosing to spend more time in nature.

It’s so comforting, even when the girls just eat noodles or stay warm by the campfire.

I also commend C-Station for doing such an awesome job with the coloring and the backgrounds.

They all help evoke an inviting, relaxing feeling every step of the way.

6. Shirobako

Shirobako is the second entry of the PA Works “Working Girls” trilogy, with the most recent being 2017’s Sakura Quest, which sadly didn’t make it to my list.

I wasn’t hooked with the first episode.

Actually I was overwhelmed with the sheer number of people.

But the amazing thing about Shirobako is that it made everything work. I literally shed a tear by the end.

And if you want to know how anime studios work, watch this.

Consider it a love letter to the people who make the shows we love.

5. Aria the Animation

Aria the Animation has three distinct seasons and is one of the most endearing anime of the 2000s.

Like any classic SoL series, it features extremely likable characters, beautiful backgrounds, and good vibes — and yet it’s set in Mars hundreds of years into the future.

Despite being so far away in temporal and spatial terms, Aria the Animation is still human at its core.

It’s about the relationships we develop with the people around us, of how nice it is to make memories with them.

Don’t binge this series. Instead, save one episode for each day.

Let it make you reflect on and appreciate your own life while and after viewing.

4. Mushishi

Is it a bad thing when people fall asleep while watching anime?

If it’s Mushishi, it’s a compliment.

For so many people over the years, they’ve attested to the ultra-soothing effect of this supernatural franchise.

It’s a miracle that Mushishi got new content after its first season back in 2005.

But anyone interested in this anime must remember that it’s not all relaxation and nature backgrounds here.

Mushishi is philosophical in a sense, looking into the meaning of life and existence.

It can make you sad or hopeless at times, but Ginko and the many mushi creatures should deepen your understanding of life for the better in the long run.

3. Nichijou (My Ordinary Life)

This is my bronze medalist — and I’m kind of hurt saying that.

Nichijou is near and dear to my heart, but the two final entries are just as special.

I’ve seen Nichijou at least three times and I still think it’s got one of the best comedy scenes ever.

I’ll never forget how Mio threw down a goat, or Yuuko’s reaction to getting bitten in the hand by a dog.

Furthermore, Nichijou boasts solid OP and ED tracks, and each character (whether main or supporting) manages to leave an impression.

It’s whacky, outrageous, and just a fine celebration of ordinary life.

2. Non Non Biyori

Non Non Biyori is my favorite anime set in the countryside.

The first scene alone sets the entire mood of the series, with shots of the natural surroundings, accompanied by soothing instrumental music.

For me, there’s no cuter or more adorable main character in anime than Renge.

She’s exactly how a child should act.

Now she can be stubborn or have too many questions, but she’s honest with herself and everyone around.

My favorite Non Non Biyori episode is when she meets another kid who’s just around her age.

It was the first time she was with someone as young as her, and what happened by the end was a stunning show of childlike emotion, all without words or dramatic music.

Anyway, Non Non Biyori has two seasons and a movie. And they are all absolutely worth watching.

Silver Link did a consistently amazing job with this show.

1. K-On!

Was there any other series that could hold the top spot?

This is Naoko Yamada’s first directorial project, before she handled other beloved KyoAnime anime like Liz and the Blue Bird, Tamako Market, Tamako Love Story, and Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions.

Yes, the main characters are all part of a club — a music club, to be specific.

But while K-On! does have music, more of its time is spent on just being together, laughing and having tea and cake.

Thanks to Yamada’s vision and her team’s superior technical skills, K-On! never looks or feels mundane.

The animation is fluid, never stiff, and it’s a masterclass in using body and facial movements to portray emotions.

K-On! didn’t need to show faces all the time.

Sometimes the way their legs moved and how the girls walked was more than enough to show character.

The lighting, particularly in the movie, is brilliant.

There’s one scene of them in the car on the road at night, with the lights outside flashing by quickly.

It’s such a relatable moment, one that many of us have experienced but is hard to describe in words — and so K-On! did it through animation.

«SLICE-OF-LIFE». If we go by the typical definition, slice-of-life means «a realistic representation of everyday experience in a film, play, or book».

And although it might seem like a boring idea on paper, in reality, it’s a captivating genre.

This is even more true if we talk about its execution in anime and manga.

Therefore, to appreciate the beauty of the slice-of-life series, I have created the Top 50 Best Slice Of Life anime list.

From calming to eye-opening, from unique to exciting, this list has it all. So grab your wafers, lay back on your couch, and prepare yourself for a ride.

50. Hyouka

I guess it is time for us to begin our journey of life with this list and the best anime to start our ‘slice-of-life’ would be the popular mystery series, Hyouka.

Hyouka is a 22 episode TV anime that aired back in 2012. It is an anime adaptation of a Novel.

The manga was written by Yonezawa Honobu. The story talks about Oreki Hotarou who believes in energy conservation.

He will try his level best to NOT get involved with anything if he doesn’t want to.

However, fate takes a different direction and he does end up getting involved with Chitanda Eru.

In the Classics club, these two along with 2 other students solve the mysteries of their school.

Will they be able to solve the oldest mystery? The mystery of Hyouka? The anime series is calm, entertaining, and wholesome.

Yes, it’s your typical slice of life anime but with the power of Kyoto Animation, it is just a level ahead.

49. Toradora!

Many of us love to enjoy some good and entertaining romance anime with the slice-of-life element added to it.

And if such anime fall under your radar then Toradora might be your first preference.

Toradora! is a 25 episode TV anime that aired back in 2008. It is an anime adaptation of a light novel.

The light novel was written by Takemiya Yuyuko and illustrated by Yasu. The story talks about Ryuuji and Taiga, two classmates who love each other’s best friends.

However, they (their best friends) don’t know about it and so, Taiga and Ryuuji will try their best to set the other person with them.

However, during this process of setting the love life for each other, they both might have created a unique relationship amongst themselves as well.

Slow and steady wins the race. And I think that’s the reason why Toradora is the most popular slice-of-life anime of all time even after being a bit longer than normal anime.

Yup, it is definitely worth your time.

48. Tanoshii Muumin Ikka

You know, sometimes we don’t need any Shounen or seinen anime to entertain us. Sometimes, it’s those simple anime that give us the feeling we wanted so much.

And one such anime is Tanoshii Muumin Ikka. Tanoshii Muumin Ikka is a 78 episode TV anime that aired back in 1990.

It is an anime adaptation of a book. The anime was directed by Saitou Hiroshi and animated by Telescreen.

The anime is like a Kodomomuke series talking about the adventures of animal characters across the valley of Moomin.

It’s nothing mind-bending or revolutionary. Just calm, funny, and silly anime for the kids. What makes this anime so good is its status even after being a Kids’ show.

The thing is, Kids’ shows are usually regarded as ‘bad’ for no good reason. However, those who watch Tanoshii Muumin Ikka get their opinions changed very quickly.

I think many of you would have already guessed what this anime is focusing on.

And yes, you are absolutely correct. It’s about job/work. But trust me, it’s is much better than what you are expecting in your head.

Working. is a 13 episode TV anime that aired back in 2010. It is an anime adaptation of a manga series.

The anime was directed by and illustrated by Takatsu Karino. The anime tells the story of Souta Takanashi who was recruited by his crush Popura Taneshima in her restaurant.

He loves her from the depths of his heart. However, in this seemingly dangerous workplace, love might not be the first thing that will show up in your mind.

Hired as a chef for Wagnaria, the series tells the story of a young man witnessing his love in a dangerous yet hilarious workplace!

This anime is all about fun and humor. It’s a workplace comedy so you knew it was coming.

And yes, it has a tinge of romance as well.

46. Maison Ikkoku

Time for some old-school anime ladies and gentlemen. To calm your nerves and teach you about the old life, the next entry on our list is Maison Ikkoku.

Maison Ikkoku is a 96 episode TV anime that aired back in 1986. It is an anime adaptation of a manga series.

The manga was written and illustrated by Takahashi Rumiko. The story talks about Yuusaku Godai who decides to change apartments because of his dumb neighbors.

However, when he was about to leave for a new place, a new boarding house manager is appointed named Kyoko Otonashi.

And just as you would expect, my man falls for her instantly. So he decides not to go anywhere.

But the problem is that Kyoko is a widow who still cherishes her distant husband.

How will Godai make a place in her heart? A cute romantic series that talks about love and life.

Something that I know you were craving for so long.

45. Kyoukai no Kanata

Let’s take a supernatural turn now. Time to go beyond the norms and do something outstanding.

Or should I say, Beyond The Boundary! Kyoukai no Kanata is a 12 episode TV anime that aired back in 2013.

It is an anime adaptation of a light novel. The manga was written by Torii Nagomu and illustrated by Kamoi Tomoyo.

The story talks about Mirai Kiriyama who is the only one left from a clam of the spirit world.

And now she must kill the embodiment of negative human emotions called ‘Youmu’. However, when she comes across Akihito Kanbara, her life is going to change forever.

Since Akihito is half-human half-youmu, he is invincible. And thus begins the relationship between these two as one of them tries to kill the other.

However, things are soon going to take some interesting turns. An anime that talks about spirits and functions as a slice of life are a rare occurrence, to say the least.

Therefore, you should give this one a try.

44. Hinamatsuri

Let’s talk about some supernatural anime yet again. However, this time, we might wanna add some sci-fi as well.

This is going to be a good one. Hinamatsuri is a 12 episode TV anime that aired back in 2018.

It is an anime adaptation of a manga series. The manga was written and illustrated by Ohtake Masao.

The story talks about Nitta Yoshifumi, a Yakuza member who comes across a girl named Hina.

However, Hina is no ordinary kid as she has immense power that can’t be controlled by any human.

Now that she is with a Yakuza, her powers are going to be used much more efficiently.

And the best part is that it is all under Gina’s consent. So it’s a win-win all around.

You might get a negative outlook on this anime after reading that synopsis but relax.

The series is not about kidnapping. It’s about a complex relationship between a Yakuza and a girl with unreal power.

Yeah, it is indeed complex.

43. Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou

The next slice-of-life anime is a bit different. It isn’t your typical lovely series. Instead, it is much darker and phenomenal than you would expect.

Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou is a 12 episode TV anime that aired back in 2017. It is an anime adaptation of a web-manga series.

The web-manga was written and illustrated by Tsukumizu. The series is set in a world where humans have almost reached Extinction.

Only a handful of them are alive and let’s just say that their presence is negligible.

In this world where no one is to be found, Yuuri and Chito have to do all they can to survive.

Food, shelter, and clothing are just the basic problems that they will face on their journey to search for those who survived.

An anime that dives into the depths of reality and socialism is something that might give us a new perspective.

If you are a fan of such a mind-bending series, then you might wanna give this a try as well.

42. ReLIFE

What would happen if you get to live your adolescence again? Will it be any different?

How would it go? All these questions are answered beautifully in this anime. ReLIFE is a 13 episode TV anime that aired back in 2016.

It is an anime adaptation of a web-manga series. The web-manga was written and illustrated by Yayoi Sou.

The series talks about Arata Kaizaki who gets the opportunity to live his old life back again.

How? A group of scientists offers him pay for allowing them to experiment with him.

All he has to do is re-live his 17-year-old self and he will get paid for it.

However, this is Arata’s only chance to change his stale high school into an interesting one.

Will he be able to make it through? Even though it might not look like it, this anime is a lot more captivating than you might think.

With its brilliant concept and incredible execution, ReLife is a slice-of-life that might end up staying in your head rent-free.

41. Little Busters!

Time for a high school adventure series ladies and gentlemen. It’s been a while. And I think one of the best ones amongst them is Little Busters.

Little Busters! is a 26 episode TV anime that aired back in 2012. It is an anime adaptation of a visual novel.

The anime was directed by Yamakawa Yoshiki and animated by JC Staff. The manga talks about Riki Naoe who was at a horrible stage in his life after his parents died.

However, a change took place when Kyousuke approached him to be a part of a group.

Years have passed and this group is still together. However, this is their last and so they decide to make a baseball team and work for it.

But in this process of finding their enjoyment, these guys might end up discovering something unexpected.

A great anime for anyone who loves mystery and drama in their narratives.

40. Horimiya

10 Over, 40 More To Go! That is correct ladies and gentlemen, we are at the Top 40 of our list.

From here on, every manga is even more refined than before, making it a great pick for you.

And let’s start this segment with a rather interesting series. Horimiya is a 13 episode TV anime that aired back in 2021.

It is an anime adaptation of a manga series. The manga was written by HERO and illustrated by Hagiwara Daisuke.

The anime talks about Kyouko Hori who might seem like a perfect girl at first but has an easier side of her that no one knows about.

On the other hand, is Miyamura Izumi, who seems like a depressed student but actually has a somewhat cheerful personality that no one has seen.

When these two get entangled with each other after an accident, things will take some weird turns.

And LOVE might be blooming somewhere along those lines. Horimiya is a new anime in the market but it still managed to capture so many hearts.

Watch it once and it will capture your heart as well.

39. Mimi wo Sumaseba

Well well, what do we have here? A beautiful Ghibli movie, I would say. And it’s no surprise that it made it to this list easily.

I mean come on guys, it’s Studio Ghibli. Those guys know how to make good shows.

And Mimi wo Sumaseba is just one of those incredible series. Mimi wo Sumaseba is a 1 hour 50 min anime movie that aired back in 1995.

It is an anime adaptation of a manga series. The movie was directed by Miyazaki Hayao and animated by Studio Ghibli.

The story talks about Shizuku Tsukishima who loves to read books and comes in touch with a guy named Seiji Amasawa.

Seiji is a dreamer who wants to fulfill his dream at any cost. Shizuku, on the other hand, gets upset by this because she herself has no dreams of her own.

Therefore, while spending time with Seiji, she looks for her dream and prepares to work towards it.

This beautiful story of our girl working to find out her own goals and dreams is not only Wholesome but also inspiring.

38. Hachimitsu to Clover

The next anime on our list is filled with fun and interesting characters that you would love to watch on screen.

This is the story of Honey & Clover. Hachimitsu to Clover is a 24 episode TV anime that aired back in 2005.

It is an anime adaptation of a manga series. The manga was written and illustrated by Umino Chika.

The series talks about Yuuta Takemoto who shares his apartment with two other students. My man doesn’t seem to have any interest in life until he meets Hagumi Hanamoto.

She is the one Yuuta falls for and luckily, she takes admission to Yuuta’s college.

As a love story is about, to begin with these two classmates, a lot more might be happening behind the back with those two boys we talked about earlier.

Romance and slice-of-life is a beautiful combination. And with an amazing cast like that of Honey and Clover, this combination becomes even more amazing!

37. Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou

Probably one of the most hilarious anime you will ever come across, this is The Daily Life Of High School boys.

Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou is a 12 episode TV anime that aired back in 2012.

It is an anime adaptation of a web-manga series. The web-manga was written and illustrated by Yamauchi Yasunobu.

The anime is literally what it sounds like. It is about the daily life of three high Schoolboys, sharing the same school.

However, with each one of them having unique and hilarious characteristics, this daily life is going to be anything but stale.

For all of you who were having a bad day and want to enjoy some calming yet funny anime series then you have this one as a recommendation.

36. Gin no Saji

Do you like farming? Well if you do then you might also end up enjoying the next entry on our list, Gin no Saji.

Gin no Saji is an 11 episode TV anime that aired back in 2013. It is an anime adaptation of a manga series.

The manga was written and illustrated by Arakawa Hiromu. The series talks about the life of Yuugo Hachiken who is fed up with urban life.

And so, he decided to take the easier path and took admission to Ooezo Agricultural High School in the countryside.

However, his myth is busted instantly when he comes across students who are exceptional at farming and know everything about it.

This is the story of one such guy who tried to underestimate the life of farmers and their learnings.

Done by the author of Fullmetal Alchemist, this anime will teach you so much about farming and life in the countryside.

If you are tired of your modern life as well, why not shift to the villages for once?

35. Nodame Cantabile

The next entry on our list talks about the life of an artist. An artist who found unreal talent in another artist and their life together.

Nodame Cantabile is a 23 episode TV anime that aired back in 2007. It is an anime adaptation of a manga series.

The manga was written and illustrated by Ninomiya Tomoko. The anime tells the story of Shinichi Chiaki who is an exceptional musician known to be a perfectionist.

However, when he meets pianist Megumi Noda, his awe reaches a new level. She is incredible and her music is something else.

Moreover, she is a neighbor to Shinichi and is head over heels over him. This is the story of two artists who are going to have an interesting life together.

This anime is all about music and mastery. Something that only the artists can love and appreciate.

34. Beck

Yet another anime that talks about music. However, this time, it is also about dreams and life.

Beck is a 26 episode TV anime that aired back in 2004. It is an anime adaptation of a manga series.

The manga was written and illustrated by Sakuishi Harold. The story talks about Yukio Tanaka who doesn’t seem to have a great life ahead.

However, when he meets Ryuusuke Minami, he experiences a new version of himself. Now the man who spent his adolescence hearing music is going to create some for a band.

That’s right ladies and gentlemen, this is the story of Yukio finding passion in his life and going from being a loser to a lead singer.

For all my friends who ever had a dream in life, this anime is there to motivate you.

With its realistic and grounded approach, Beck is one of the best anime you can watch to enhance your mood.

33. Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World

The next anime on our list is an amazing work for anyone who likes to travel a lot.

For all those who love the idea of going to new places and exploring them, this is the anime for you.

This is Kino No Tabi. Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World is a 13 episode TV anime that aired back in 2003.

It is an anime adaptation of a light novel. The light novel was written by Sigsawa Keiichi and illustrated by Kuroboshi Kouhaku.

The series talks about Kino, a traveler who meets Harmes. Now Hermes isn’t who you are expecting him to be.

It’s not a human, it’s a motorcycle that can talk. Yup, Kino manages to befriend a motorcycle that can talk, and together, both Kino and Hermes are going to dive into the depths of life and understand the world.

This journey is going to be an entertaining yet interesting one. Think about it, this anime has a genius concept that helps to expand room for the theme.

Traveling from the perspective of a traveler AND a bike is an amazing thought. And this anime excited this thought beautifully as well.

32. Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!

Time for some very-very-very cute series ladies and gentlemen! The next entry on our list is one of the most wholesome romance drama series you will ever see.

Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! is a 12 episode TV anime that aired back in 2012.

It is an anime adaptation of a light novel. The light novel was written by Torako and illustrated by Ousaka Nozomi.

The story is based on the concept of Chunibyo, which is basically an assumption of yourself as a fictional being.

And my boy Yuuta Togashi has done it so many times that his guilt is unreal.

Therefore, to overcome this guilt, he makes his way to a school far from his previous one.

However, his plan for a normal life fails when he meets Takanashi Rikka, who is in a similar Chunibyo.

And thus begins the journey of Yuuta and Rikka in this school as they are dipped in love, Chunibyo, and Other Delusions.

Undoubtedly, one of, if not the cutest anime you will watch this year. Trust me when I say this, you can’t miss this one.

31. Romeo no Aoi Sora

Now let’s take a look at a rather unknown anime. This is what Romeo no Aoi Sora has to offer.

Romeo no Aoi Sora is a 33 episode TV anime that aired back in 1995.

It is an anime adaptation of a novel. The anime was directed by Kusuba Kouzou and animated by Nippon Animation.

The series talks about a boy named Romeo who has a heart of Gold. However, he had to sell himself for the sake of his family to the God Of Death.

Now he is a Chimney Sweep but on his way to the location, he meets Alfredo and befriends him.

When they are both separated, they swear to meet each other again. Now as a chimney sweep, both of them meet some horrible instances.

However, when they get in touch with each other once again, they become the ‘Black Brothers’ and decide to fight all those who were torturing them when they were alone.

This anime is a bit underrated within the community. The slice-of-life element in this series is one of its kind and you will have a great time enjoying it.

30. Kemono no Souja Erin

The next anime on our list might be a bit obscure for many of you guys out there.

However, it doesn’t mean that this series is any lower in quality. In fact, it is much better than you might expect.

Kemono no Souja Erin is a 50 episode TV anime that aired back in 2009.

It is an anime adaptation of a novel. The anime was directed by Hamana Takayuki and animated by Production IG.

The anime is set in a war setting where two countries are in disputes with one another.

In one of the countries, stands a cute little girl who used to work alongside her mother to cure war lizards.

However, an accident causes their lives to be decimated. As the young girl separated from her family and known ones, she is now in a completely new location.

Those days of comfort and fun are over. She must do her best if she wants to survive in the new cruel world she has jumped into.

The appeal of this anime comes from its seamlessly beautiful execution. Try it out for yourself to understand its beauty.

29. K-On!

«Cute girls doing cute things». Make it a genre itself. And when you make this a genre, make sure to keep K-On at the top spot.

K-On! is a 13 episode TV anime that aired back in 2009. It is an anime adaptation of a manga series.

The manga was written and illustrated by Kakifly. As I said before, K-On is all about cute girls doing cute things.

What are those ‘things’? Well, they are creating music in the light music club. The daily struggles and experiences of this group are the core reason why people love it so much.

Filled with wholesomeness and adorable characters, this is the series that you would definitely wanna check out.

K-On is a show that can entertain anyone and everyone with its narrative. Don’t believe me, try it out.

28. Tenki no Ko

The next entry on our list isn’t a series. Instead, it is an anime movie but I think most of you already know about it.

This is weathering with you! Tenki no Ko is a 1 hour 50 min anime movie that aired back in 2019.

It is an anime original directed by Makoto Shinkai and animated by CoMix Wave Film.

The story talks about Hodaka Morishima and Hina Amano who get to know each other due to an accident.

However, this accident also results in them getting together forever. Moreover, they realize that Hina can bring sunshine in command.

In the pouring days in Japan, this power might be too good for people. However, with great power comes great responsibility.

Weathering with You is one of the most appreciated movies by Shinkai Makoto. With its unique narrative and great storytelling, this movie is a great slice-of-life work that you need to watch Now!

The series talks about a girl named Violet who seems to have no emotion and was used as a weapon by her colleagues.

When he was taking his last breath before dying in a war, he murmured ‘I Love You’ to her.

We are in the Top 3 weebs. This is it! The final stretch. And let me say that these 3 anime are pure gems in the slice-of-life department.

Without a doubt, the best of what this genre can offer. And let me start these 3 with the incredible Clannad Series.

Clannad is a 23 episode TV anime that aired back in 2007. It is an anime adaptation of a visual novel.

The anime was directed by Ishihara Tatsuya and animated by Kyoto Animation. The series talks about a delinquent named Tomoya Okazaki and his meeting with Nagisa Furukawa.

These two polar opposites started on a random incident but over time, became close friends.

Now they are both on a journey to reopen the School drama club. However, as more people get involved in this, the lives of both Nagisa and Tomoya are going to change.

And let’s just say that the change is for the better. Now, I would like to mention something.

The greatness of Clannad can only be experienced IF AND ONLY IF you watch Clannad After Story as well.

This season is a set-up for the next season. And once you complete both of them, you would cry for the next 5 hours?

If you wanna watch this with anyone besides yourself, you can. Fanservice is lightweight.

2. Toradora

Sakura Quest is good for anyone interested in business and tourism (with some comedy).

But Toradora is for anyone who wants a romance series with “emotional” episodes.

In the beginning it’s about Ryuuji and Taiga.

Taiga constantly abuses Ryuuji non-stop.

Later the anime starts to get intense unlike any other slice of life series you’ll ever see.

For that reason, Toradora is a masterpiece in the “slice of life” department. And you should watch it.

3. Tamako Market

Made by Kyoto Animation, Tamako Market is an innocent slice of life about Tamako, the daughter of a business man who makes Mochi for a living.

Unlike an anime like Sakura Quest, Tamako Market doesn’t have a particular focus or plot. Other than highlighting the daily lifestyle of living in a small town, doing business, a fat talking bird, school and comedy.

But don’t be fooled by that. This is one of the most relaxing anime shows that will put you at ease.

And you also don’t have to think too much about what you’re watching… Because it’s that chilled and simple.

4. Flying Witch

Where as Tamako Market is about a town that makes Mochi, Flying Witch is about a witch in training.

Makoto Kowata moves to the countryside with family to get some “personal experience” that will prepare her for the future.

Don’t expect too much comedy from this one, but do expect to feel chilled and relaxed like no other anime is capable of.

5. Orange

An anime like Toradora highlights the emotional struggles of romance (eventually).

But Orange highlights depression, suicide, romance, guilt and bullying. Which sets it apart from your average slice of life series.

Like any “normal” person would, Kakeru Naruse is guilty of his mother’s death. Because the day she died he said something he shouldn’t have.

And regret is destroying him from the inside out.

This is a deep, meaningful series so keep that in mind before you decide to watch. As it gets uncomfortable for obvious reasons.

6. Kokoro Connect

At first I didn’t know what to make of Kokoro Connect, but as it makes progress it starts to shine and blossom like an Iris flower.

Kokoro Connect is about 5 students who are forced to play along with an “experiment” that tests their friendship, sanity, emotions and relationships with each other.

It’s thought-provoking. So it’s unlikely this anime won’t make you think about your own life in some way or another.

There’s some romance too if that tickles your fancy.

7. Clannad

Clannad is known as a “masterpiece” when it comes to romance and slice of life. And I agree as I’ve watched it.

The first season focuses on Tomoya Okazaki and Nagisa Furukawa.

Nagisa is “weak” physically, and there’s a deeper reason about why. But the first season of Clannad focuses more on having fun, with your “odd” moment that’s meaningful.

Season 2 is where Clannad evolves into something deep, tragic and pouring with emotional baggage.

So if you consider Clannad, make sure you watch both seasons to get the full story and experience.

8. Kanon

Produced by Kyoto Animation, Kanon is what I call the little brother of Clannad.

Typical of Kyoto Animation, the styles, design and characters share strong similarities.

The animation is just as nice for its time, and the story is worthwhile too. But Kanon is overshadowed by Clannad’s success.

That aside, if you want something besides Clannad with a different story and theme, Kanon is the best choice.

There’s few comparable slice of life to Clannad like Kanon that are worth mentioning.

9. New Game!

New Game! is one of the freshest slice of life shows in the industry. Released back in 2016.

Aoba Suzukaze is the protagonist, and her dream is to work for a gaming company and create games for a living.

Season 1 and 2 follows Aoba Suzukaze on her journey in the gaming industry. Along with other characters who all work for the same company (with similar goals).

So you’ll enjoy this if “gaming” or “programming” is a personal interest.

Animation quality is one of New Game’s strongest traits. It’s bright, colorful, gorgeous and nice on the eyes.

10. Violet Evergarden

Made by Kyoto Animation, Violet Evergarden is an anime that knows how to tell emotional stories.

Each set of episodes is focused on the main character, Violet, whose job is to help people write letters to the people they love.

To give them closure.

Words can’t describe how much of a masterpiece this anime is.

It’s even comparable to shows like Clannad for its emotional story-telling.

11. Barakamon

Barakamon is about Seishu Handa, a calligrapher who’s sent off to live on an island to work on his bad behaviour.

All 12 episodes focus on Seishu Handa’s personal development, journey, and the changes he goes through as a person.

There’s also a nice range of ages among the main and support characters in Barakamon that you’ll like.

12. Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is pure fun, with a couple of warm moments to change-up the pace every couple of episodes.

The main difference between this and regular slice of life, is it’s focused on 1 human character, and human-like dragons.

You can expect”some fanservice here from Lucoa, a character obviously designed for fanservice. But it’s much less than what you’d expect from comparable shows.

13. Himouto! Umaru Chan

Himouto Umaru Chan is about an annoying little sister, Umaru, and her older brother: Taihei Doma.

Umaru is two-faced, living a double-lifestyle just to live up to people’s expectations.

Just like Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, Umaru Chan is fun, and the comedy will make you chuckle.

Especially if you’re into video games the way the MC is.

14. Aria The Animation

Aria The Animation is the animated version of getting a massage. Because it’s relaxing, sometimes cheesy, and too chilled to be “serious”.

And the city the anime is based in is taken from the city of Venice, in Italy. With a few changes to make it unique.

15. Classroom Of The Elite

Classroom of the Elite is nothing like your everyday slice of life series.

Why? It has a darker side than most. You discover this pretty fast within the first few episodes.

It’s an anime in a league of its own.

16. Love, Chunibyo And Other Delusions

Chunibyo is the kind of the slice of life that will make you cringe, and force you to drop it.

Or at least that was my experience… until I gave it another chance and enjoyed it to the fullest.

The story is mostly about Rika, a teenager who believes she has superpowers. And Yuta, a male protagonist who gets caught up in Rika’s delusions.

Things start to get a little romantic in the second season of this series.

17. Best Student Council

The plot is all in the name.

It’s about the best student council and their daily lives of managing their school. Focused mainly on Rino Rando and Kanade Jinguji.

Each character is memorable, even though there are 8 characters. And you get a mix of romance, stupid comedy, and a small drop of heart-warming episodes to top it all off.

18. Hinamatsuri

I love an anime that can make me laugh and make me feel for the characters.

Hinamatsuri has mastered the art of doing both.

On one hand you have Hina, a girl with supernatural powers (who lives with a Yakuza).

And then you have Anzu, a girl with supernatural abilities… except she ends up homeless.

You see these two elements play out from start to finish, the anime does a good job of “timing” it right.

19. Hyouka

Hyouka is about an annoyingly persistent girl: Eru Chitanda, and a lazy guy: Houtarou Oreki.

Together (with other characters) they solve mysteries and find answers to complicated questions.

Almost like detectives.

The most surprising thing about Hyouka is how entertaining it is, despite the theme seeming so boring and average.

20. ReLife

ReLife is a relatable slice of life series about young adulthood and turning your life around for the better.

Kaizaki Arata gets lucky and is given the chance to turn his life around, and correct the mistakes he’s made as a young adult in Japan.

What comes next is pure comedy, and a meaningful story that follows a handful of characters in college.

Occasionally, it gets a little “dark” as well.

21. Ranma 1/2

But if you want a slice of life series that inspired slice of life today as we know it, start with Ranma 1/2.

It’s one of the most original slice of life shows that’s still relevant and worth recommending.

22. Kino’s Travels (And Kino’s Journey)

Kino’s Travels is the first (and only) season of the Kino’s anime series.

It started out in the early 2000’s, and the animation is proof of that. But don’t be put off by it.

As far as story-telling goes, Kino’s Journey is the most refreshing anime I’ve watched. And the aspect of traveling to dozens of countries and cities is another special reason to consider it.

Kino’s Journey is an “additional” anime with modern animation and up to date visuals. But the original is the best version of the two.

23. Watamote

This anime is all kinds of weird, depressing, and in some ways,effed up. It’s what you’d call “dark comedy” with slice of life being its main focus.

Tomoko Kuroki is a teenage girl after all with low self-esteem, no friends, and a low opinion of herself.

So the kinds of things she does to get attention, get noticed, and “make an effort” naturally turns into weird, awkward circumstances that will make you laugh.

If not, it’ll make you cringe.

24. The Disastrous Life Of Saiki K

Saiki K is a refreshing approach to slice of life because it adds an element of fantasy, superpowers, and an introverted protagonist who see’s his abilities as an inconvenience.

In his eyes, Saiki K just wants to live his life and avoid being troubled by anyone.

But as you’ll see with the crazy comedy and relentless parodies, this is obviously too much to ask for.

25. Nana

I’ll never witness a more realistic slice of life series for as long as I live.

Nana is the most “true to life” romance in the industry. Produced by Madhouse.

I’d recommend ALL young adult (and Millennials) to watch it. Because it’ll open your eyes to the world around you, in a way that’s realistic and easy for you to relate to.

26. Squid Girl

Squid Girl is a girl from the sea with the powers and abilities of a squid. Even the way she talks is a little weird, strange, but most of all, hilarious.

That’s part of the animes killer charm.

With 3 seasons in total, and an OVA, this is a laid back, care-free slice of life to keep you entertained.

Squid Girl for me is underrated, probably because it’s seen as too “childish” (whatever that means).

27. Nodame Cantabile

Take the main character: Chiaki for example.

A guy who instead of handing over an umbrella to the girl who adores him, he walks away and uses it for himself.

If you want something unconventional and tasteful, Nodame Cantabile might surprise you.

28. Love Live School Idol Project

Love Live is a “cute things” slice of life series. But it’s not entirely true.

The main plot is about Honoka Kousaka, her friends, and their goal of becoming school idols together.

It’s one of the first “all girl” anime shows I watched, and each character makes Love Live all the more fun and enjoyable.

29. Lucky Star

Lucky Star is another all-girl anime series. But that doesn’t matter if you’re open-minded and want some GOOD comedy.

Konata Izumi is the laid back, sarcastic character who brightens up the show. And her friend – Kagami is the opposite.

Expect to see gaming references, Otaku culture, NO plot, and random episodes that will make you wonder WTF you’re even doing with yourself.

30. School Live (Gakkou Gurashi)

Gakkou Gurashi, or School Live in English, is a horror series about zombies, mental illness, and the psychology of each character.

All the main characters are forced to live on “leftovers” because the world has come to an end. Since it’s crawling with Zombies.

Yuki Takeya, one of the main characters develops a mental illness from all the stress and depressing circumstances.

If it’s something chilling and dark you want, this is the slice of life anime to get into.

So don’t let the “cute” fool you.

31. Tanaka Kun Is Always Listless

Tanaka is a lazy student who’s too reserved for his own good. In fact he’s so chilled, you’d think he’s been smoking weed and getting high off it.

There isn’t much of a plot, but there doesn’t need to be. Because it’s the kind of anime you watch for the characters, the relaxation, and occasional comedy that’s in a league of its own.

32. Little Witch Academia

Little Witch Academia is one of Studio Trigger’s best anime in their catalog.

You won’t find fanservice here. Or anything that tries to sneakily throw in fanservice for fanservice’ sake.

The plot is about Atsuko Kagari, and her dream of becoming a witch that can make people smile.

This simple dream turns into a mad adventure that’s fun, educational and makes you wish you could join her.

It’s the kind of anime you wished you watched as a kid, except it never existed.

33. K-On

You didn’t think this list would be complete without K-On did you?

K-On is the undisputed queen of slice of life shows. That’s just how Kyoto Animation rolls as an anime studio.

There’s no plot, just like Lucky Star, and it’s the literal definition of “cute things”.

And even still, the animation is well-done, the comedy is classic, and like many slice of life, it’s easy to warm to because it’s so easy going.

34. Hanayamata

Hanayamata is about Naru Sekiya, a shy teenager who’s anxious and nervous in big crowds.

Eventually Naru and other characters get together and start doing what Japan calls Yasakoi.

Which is a freestyle type of dancing.

Hanayamata is another “anime like K-On is more “child-like” because of the “Moe” drawings.

It’s one of the purest slice of life shows that has a good balance of everything you’d expect, without being boring or too cliche.

35. The Ancient Magus Bride

The Ancient Magus Bride is a beautiful slice of life, comparable to Violet Evergarden for its animation quality.

It’s about Hatori Chise, an orphan with special powers who’s been denied and rejected all her life because of “what” she is.

The first wave of this series starts out strong, but depending on your perspective, the last half falls off a bit.

But It’s still worth recommending

36. Haganai: I Don’t Have Many Friends

Haganai takes the usual slice of life concept, and then adds bullying, loneliness, and Ecchi to the mix.

It’s a “Harem” as well.

So if you weren’t expecting fanservice… now you know what to expect.

Haganai is a slice of life unlike anything you’ll see. Because of the way it tackles loneliness and bullying. While still managing to throw in comedy and romance without embarrassing itself.

37. If It’s For My Daughter, I’d Even Defeat A Demon Lord!

If It’s For My Daughter is an anime series produced in 2019 by Maho Film (new studio).

It’s an anime built around a father-daughter relationship between a human and a demon child.

Each episode seems more heartwarming than the next, and the story is built on emotional appeal and “cute” moments that make it hard to dislike.

Under the surface – it’s a meaningful series that’ll offer something new for fans of Usagi Drop and Barakamon.

Sitcoms should never have laugh tracks. But your life definitely should, some laughter a day keeps the doctor away or something like that.

So we turn to anime to see what kinda gut-busting material it has to offer us. And just to make sure we don’t go too crazy and pull a Kill la Kill, we’ll be looking at slice of life comedies in this list.

15. Daily Lives of High School Boys

I can’t say whether I love this show because I too am a boy and was in high school at one point in my life, or because I just have a very sensitive tickle bone. But either way, I enjoyed myself.

The title can easily serve as a synopsis, as that is truly all this show is about: a bunch of boys learning what hormones are, getting into trouble, and the occasional stick fight.

There are no supernatural elements so the humor is always right in that sweet sweet “relatable zone” our entire generation loves so much.

14. Asobi Asobase

Asobi Asobase is also just your regular high school flick.

However, its appeal is on the completely opposite side of the spectrum compared to the previous pick.

This show is just absurd, and the humor is in your face, over the top, and I will be darned if I’ve ever seen a punchline coming.

Just to give you a taste, let me say that one of the protagonists has a butler who follows her around everywhere and can shoot a laser beam out of his butt.

Not high-brow humor, but it certainly gets the job done.

13. The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.

In this show it’s not just the humor that’s absurd, but rather the entire universe.

This is because our protagonist, Saiki, basically has godlike powers.

What does he do with said powers?

He goes to school and does his very best to stay away from his friends, while occasionally teleporting around, flying, maybe punching a ghost, it’s all fair game.

Because of the setup of the show, you really never know what the next episode entails. And trust me, sometimes it gets really weird.

12. The Pet Girl of Sakurasou

This is just one of those shows that could basically be placed in any setting, and use any plot device and still be good.

In other words, it is extremely character-driven. And the dynamic they have is top notch.

The plot boils down to a dorm life experience, but each resident sticks out from the norm. So we have a playboy, an anti-social programmer, and probably most importantly: a cat-like girl genius.

The selling point is on that last part, as the second she laches onto our protagonist it becomes as hard for us to stop watching as it is for him to leave that dorm.

11. Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto

Men only want one thing, and it’s to be Sakamoto. He is literally the pinnacle of human evolution and is perfect in every way.

You’d think that there would be a big “but” after that statement that introduces the plot device, but no, he is just perfect.

Sakomoto is, however, extremely extra in everything he does. And will make a mundane experience, like waking to school, as exciting as an Olympic sport.

The show is extremely over the top. But only in regards to Sakamoto, which actually works perfectly for a comedy series.

10. Saint☆Onii-san

This is one of those shows where I can’t help but be surprised that no one came up with this idea sooner, because it is absolute gold.

Okay, I guess South Park kind of had a similar schtick…

Jesus Christ and Buddha are roommates and living in modern day Japan.

How does that not just hook you in immediately?

I’ve found that you’ll get the most kicks out of this show if you know a thing or two about both religions. But there are enough general jokes to carry you through if you don’t care much about religion at all.

9. Senyuu.

This one is a pocket pick of mine that I always pull out when a friend comes over and we want to kill an hour or two. It’s an extremely short series of, well, shorts centred around a man and his grand adventure to save the world.

The show takes shots at absolutely every anime adventure trope. And it does so brilliantly, never allowing for a dull moment.

I can confidently say that it’s funny for all ages, excluding that one pedo old guy who’s there for whatever reason… but if you ever want to get a few giggles out and don’t feel like committing to a long series, try Senyuu.

8. Tanaka-kun is Always Listless

Have you ever had one of those days where you woke up and just kind of regretted it a little, because now you actually have to go out and be a human?

If so, then this show should be right up your alley.

As the name might suggest, the main driving force of the show is Tanaka and his absolute determination to not do anything noteworthy, ever.

However, his friends don’t quite get his enlightened outlook on life and try to make him do things he might find interesting. He usually doesn’t, but god knows it’s entertaining to watch.

7. Kiss Him, Not Me

Half the reason why I picked up this show for this list is just because the main heroine lost half her body weight out of sadness, all because her favorite anime character died… I miss Kamina.

The other reason for this pick is the fact that this is every fan-fiction writer’s dream: trying to trick straight men into falling in love with each other, even though they were initially interested in you.

And be honest, you kind of want to know whether she succeeds in her BL quest.

6. Isekai Quartet

Speaking of fan-fiction, what if characters from famous isekai shows all went to high school together? Wouldn’t that be fun?

Answer is, absolutely.

There’s just something so fascinating about seeing Kazuma interact with Subaru, or Ainz, or little girl Hitler.

The show also likes to poke fun at the genre as a whole, showing off some of the more ridiculous tropes as well as making references to the respective shows. The art style is very chibi-esque so you can really detach it from the gloom these kinds of shows (cough Re:Zero) usually have.

5. The Devil as a Part-Timer

A friend once told me that they would rather burn in Hell than work at a fast-food place.

Well the jokes’s on that guy, because Satan is flipping burgers as we speak.

That introduction might make the show sound absurd and over the top, but it’s actually rather tame. The character’s are isekai’d from a fantasy world and posses some power, but the backbone of the show is literally them getting a day-job and trying to pay rent.

It just works in all of the right ways.

4. Food Wars!

I can’t tell whether I’m alone on this, but I found Food Wars to be absolutely hilarious. The first season at least.

And the cast has some real winners. Most notably Souma, Megumi, and Hinako.

It also has that shounen aesthetic so not only will you get a few laughs, but you’ll also get pure hype whenever a Shokugeki is about to take place.

Some might even call it the best of both worlds.

3. KonoSuba

KonoSuba is, in my opinion, a slice of life hiding under the mask of adventure.

Because when you really think about it, nothing major happens in the show. It’s just a bunch of goofballs messing around and getting eaten by frogs.

The shining light, of course, being Kazuma. For being one of the few characters in anime to be realistic.

There is no real honor code. In this case it’s not all about the nakamas we made along the way, and he will absolutely drop kick you if you mess with him too much.

So even if some of you might fight me on the slice of life part, I sincerely doubt anyone would deny that the show is hilarious.

2. Merman in my Tub

I’m starting to realize that I have a thing for short anime series, as this one is also about an hour long in total.

It’s an extremely chill and funny show that boils down to “man finds merman and decides to keep him in his bathtub”.

And that’s all the show needs.

Said merman is an absolute troll and can’t help but either tease the protagonist, or bring half of the Pacific Ocean into the house so that he doesn’t get bored. Both great choices.

1. Grand Blue

And since we’re already on the topic of water, I would like to finish the list off with Grand Blue: a show that both makes me want to drink, and never drink again, all at the same time.

In a shocking turn of events, the show actually takes place in college. And it showcases all the tomfoolery that seemingly every college student (but me) does on a regular basis.

It can get absurd at times, as extreme emotions are portrayed by people entering Titan forms. But the show has its serene moments as well.

While Rin is unapproachable at first with Daikichi’s help, they learn how to become a family.

24. Tanaka-kun Is Always Listless

Unlike most high school students ready to live on the edge Tanaka prefers the calmer side of things. Praying that nothing happens every day so that he can maintain his lazy lifestyle. Prone to falling asleep anywhere at any time, Tanaka tries his best to not exhaust himself. Though the people he attracts as friends seems to be more on the less peaceful side of things.

23.Bakuman

Mashiro has always wanted to draw manga, following in the steps of his uncle. After the passing of his uncle, he puts his dream on the shelf instead aiming to be a businessman instead. But after Takagi, a fellow classmate who is well known to be great at writing notices Mashiro’s talent for drawing the two decide to make an amazing manga together while trying to keep up with studies and their day to day life.

Umaru-chan is your perfect student, always getting perfect scores and excellent at everything she does, she sounds like a perfect person. This, however, is untrue as we find out that when she gets home, she is a lazy Otaku that whines when she doesn’t get what she wants. Her brother can’t believe that his perfect sister has such different personalities between school and home life, and neither can we.

20. Ouran High school host club

Haru not being one to care about appearances opts for comfortable clothes that give her a boyish appearance when she can’t afford her new schools uniform. She walks into what she thinks is an empty room to find a quiet place to study, only to end up in the school’s host club. While trying to get away she ends up knocking over an expensive vase causing her to belong to the club as an errand boy until she is able to repay her debt.

19. The Flowers We Saw That Day

Jinta is enjoying his life at home, never going to school and spending his days playing video games at home. After being bothered by a friend about a forgotten wish he forced to reconnect with the world and his old friends to lay her spirit to rest.

Everyone wants a second chance, but what would you do if you actually had it? This is the case for Arata Kaizaki, a 27-year-old who has been jumping from job to job. One night he meets Ryou a member of the ReLife institute who offers him a pill that will give him a chance to return to school and a new lease on life.

Due to the fact that he is constantly working and lacks the knowledge of how to cook a proper meal, often bringing home ready-made dinners from convenience stores, taking care of his daughter is harder than he expected. After one of his students invites them to her family restaurants and his daughter enjoys a home cook meals, he puts his best foot forward to be a better father and caretaker.

After reaching professional status as a shoji player while still in middle school, Rei Kiriyama began to feel enormous pressure from his family and friends, so much so that at the age of 17 he moved to Tokyo. Though due to his reclusive nature he doesn’t take very good care of himself physically or mentally, closing himself off from everyone. After meeting the Kawamoto sisters, he begins opening up with them and learning how to interact with others again.

The listless Houtarou Oreki, joins his schools Classics Club under his sister’s command, but little does he know that he will be pulled into a 45-year-old mystery surrounding the club room. With his fellow club members, they knock the dust off works created before them and while also stopping for some smaller mysteries along the way.

Never staying in one place too long, Kaoru has adjusted to the life well, opting not to make friends and not even thinking about trying to fit in anymore. After being bothered by a friendly delinquent Sentarou and sharing a love of music together through different genres, the two end up making summer memories that neither boy will soon forget.

Yuugo is always aiming to be number one, spending most of his time studying to get the highest grades. But after falling apart due to the pressures he skips town, he heads to the country and enrolls in an Agricultural school, which would be soothing if he had experience with farm life. Learning that nothing is ever as simple as we think it is, Yuugo must learn what it means to be a farmer.

11. Nana

Sharing the same first name and not much else both Nana’s end up on a train to Tokyo. Running into each other and even ending up sharing an apartment. The deeper their friendship gets the more they begin to share with and support each other, as they become best friends.

10. Udon Nokuni No Kiniro Kemari

Souta returns to his family home and udon shop in order to get away from the city. While looking around he finds a small dirty child sleeping. First thinking this is a normal child he feeds and clothes the boy only to find out that the child is a shapeshifting Tanuki. Deciding to keep him, the two build a relationship reminding Shota what he missed about his hometown and family in the first place.

9. Shirobako

After forming an animation club in high school, Aoi, Ema, Midori, Shizuka, and Misa, now adults have all started working in the industry, but things aren’t as it seems when the anxieties of the job come down on them. We watch as these five girls make their dreams come true with a little elbow grease and a lot of creativity.

Akari a novice tour guide on Neo Venezia, a city on the planet Aqua(formerly known as Mars), is a bubbly teenager learning how to do her job. We follow her as she becomes familiar with the residents, the city and even learns a couple of life lessons along the way.

7. Hidamari Sketch

Yuno has finally done it, she’s been accepted into the school of her dreams, the Yamabuki Arts High School. Excited as she is, this will be her first time away from home, though her new neighbors make her feel right at home, leaving her to deal with the other weird problems such as her masculine landlady along with others that fill her world.

6. Barakamon

A narcissistic up and coming calligrapher, Seishuu loses his temper after having his work called unoriginal, because of this, his father sends him to the Goto Islands. Here he must find his inner inspiration and figure out his style, all while the residents of the island run in and out of his house. Unable to be secluded in the countryside he learns more than he ever would have by himself.

5.Engaged to the Unidentified

Confused by the appearance of a fiancé and a sister-in-law on her 16th birthday Kobeni has a lot to deal with, thanks to her late grandfather. Hakuya (her fiancé) and his younger sister are forced to leave their country life to better fit his new relationship, both of them forced into something that they are not prepared for. Together they must find love in a very strange way.

4.Working.

While working is not normally fun Souta goes in head first, due to his love of cute things, is unable to turn down friend, Popura when she asks him to work in a family Restaurant. While everything is not exactly together and the workers aren’t normal, the whole staff manages to have fun and create an entertaining time for everyone.

3.The Disastrous Life of Saiki K

Most people would love to have psychic abilities but not Saiki, a powerful psychic, from chaining human DNA to implanting memories Saiki wants nothing more than to go unnoticed. Though due to the strange and wacky friends he attracts he only becomes more and more famous it seems.

2. Azumanga Daioh

Chiyo is ready to start high school and ready for all the adventures that life has for her. But it all starts off differently as she meets only the strangest people she can. Thought they are all weird they quickly become friends and start to understand the ups and downs of high school life together.

While most kids would be worried about being constantly haunted by Youkai, Takashi has decided that friending them might be the best way to stop them. A book passed down from his grandmother filled with the names of the spirits. Because the technically owns their names. Finding out that the spirits to haunt him to gain their freedom, so he decides to also help them achieve their goal.

15. Restaurant to Another World (Isekai Shokudo)

Nekoya is a popular restaurant open in the Tokyo shopping district. It specializes in making Japanese-style Western dishes. However, it’s closed on Saturday for one big secret: on the “Day of Satur”, doors to other worlds open and lead various characters into the restaurant. The owner has done this for years ever since his grandpa first opened it. Every day he’s always serving wizards, beastmen, and even dragon women their favorite dishes. Then one day he comes across a homeless demon and offers her a waitress job.

I accidentally came across this while I was Googling for another anime of a similar name “Japanese Food from Another World” (Isekai Izakay Nobu). Both have one thing in common: serving Japanese dishes to someone not from our world.

Although Nobu’s door only opens to a medieval dimension. Nekoya has many doors opening for many worlds. And are still doing so to this day!

Japanese food is mouth-watering. Anime doesn’t hold back on it. Every episode features a different dish that you’ll want to try!

This anime gave me a new appreciation for chicken katsu bowls! I’ve eaten it before. But after watching the anime, I savor every bite now.

While I adore all the characters (especially the super hot Lizardman Gaganpo), it’s the women that make the anime interesting!

We have Aletta, the demon who you just want to give a hug to. Her world discriminates against her kind, which is why she is first introduced as homeless. And hungry.

Throughout the series, she works as Nekoya’s waitress and does a wonderful job in customer service! Her bubbly attitude and trying new recipes will warm your heart!

Then there’s Sarah Gold (who may or may not have been inspired by Lara Croft). She’s a treasure hunter, and her introduction has her slaughtering a bunch of goblins no problem.

When she finds the door her grandfather once entered, we get treated to her much gentler side. On account of how much a minced meat cutlet dish can do!

And then there’s Kuro, aka “the Black Dragon of Death” in her dimension. She’s what introverts are like when they finally leave their comfort zone.

While the series only lasted 12 episodes (f*ck you, whoever decided this), the final few provide us background on Kuro: lonely, uncertain, and refusing to make human contact for fear of doing what her name implies.

However, she ends up getting a waitress job at Nekoya (which gets her paid in curry dishes). And the time she spends there, we get a look at how this change brings serious character development.

She and Aletta are practically BFFs. And the owner becomes something of a big brother/father figure to her. Kuro finally found her life.

As someone who thinks Food Wars is overrated, mean-spirited, and just confusing, this is a gentle, feel-good equivalent (again, f*ck the person who decided to only have 12 episodes).

Order some curry katsu first before sitting down to watch this.

14. Nyanko Days

Tomoko is a shy girl whose high school year is already starting friendless. Thankfully, she has her three cats for comfort. Her cat-loving personality does win over her class’ most popular girl, who is equally ecstatic since she has a cat of her own! Thus Tomoko’s kitty-filled world gets a little bigger!

This is another one of those anime that is overloaded with cuteness. You think that humanized cats were something weird, right? (like that god-awful 2019 Cats movie starring Taylor Swift)

But the anime actually manages to make humans with cat ears adorable! Well, first off, they are in chibi form. Second, no noses to enhance the cuteness.

It’s simply an anime about a girl who slowly begins finding herself a new friend. The only thing that makes it more interesting is the talking, humanesque cats.

By the way, one whole-ass season is only 30 minutes. There was a lot of potential for the anime to carry a character plot. Like we are introduced to a majority of characters that are just there for filler.

And then the anime ends with the lovely theme music and we’re left to wonder: Is that really it? Did the company who made this just not give a f*ck?

I want more adventures of Tomoko and her cats! I want to know more about her school life! I want to see more with her rich bestie and the supposed “antagonist” the show just randomly gave!

13. Somali and the Forest Spirit

A world ruled by spirits, goblins, and all sorts of creatures. Humans are scarce and practically extinct. For one forest golem who has seen it all, he is surprised to discover a lone human girl. Suddenly, he makes it his mission to find others of her kind. What started out as a bodyguard task slowly turns into a father-daughter relationship.

First off, Japan has a bad habit of writing manga where a guy adopts a little girl. then later marries her when she’s of age. This is one of those rare times where I’m actually glad an anime only remains 12 episodes.

Because if we went all the way to a season 2 and that sh*t actually got animated, I will forever pretend this anime never existed. Like Thanos-snapped.

Thankfully, this is just a sweet father-daughter duo between a golem and a little human girl.

It is another one of those anime where humanity is on the brink of extinction and the world is run by creatures. Sometimes anime like that doesn’t sit well with me. I watched Senko Academy, and it was AWFUL.

The relationship between Golem and Somali here will give Pixar fans that same wholesome feel they got from Sulley and Boo. Every episode features Golem performing some kind of fatherly duty while Somali is always clinging to him.

You will go AWWW every time they hold hands while on the next adventure.

12. Uchitama?! Have you seen my Tama?

An anime revolving around the lives of pets and their chaotic adventures. Except we’re looking through two different versions, and the other one involves them as humans with animal ears. Kawaii!

Does this anime scream furry? Or maybe anime fans prefer to simp over a person with dog ears?

Either way, this anime is cute and sexy. We watch because it has cute animals. We stick around because those animals turn into hot, attractive humans.

Not really much of a plot going. Just basic day-to-day experiences for Tama and his crew. What more is there to explain about this anime?

Just watch it! It’s cute!

11. Gourmet Girl Graffiti

Middle-schooler Ryou is a great cook. But her taste has seemed to go down along with her passion. Ever since her grandmother passed away, cooking just doesn’t seem the same. It’s not filling. When her cousin comes to attend school in the city, Ryou finds her food-filled world more appetizing. Because the best way to sate an appetite for life is eating with others.

Again, I would choose any food-based anime over Food Wars. And this is one of them.

What got me hooked was how Ryou’s love for cooking pays homage to a late relative. As someone who lost her mother around Christmas of 2015, food brought memories.

Ryou’s lack of passion for fun and flavor is her way of still grieving over her grandma. During 2016, I got emotional every time I passed by a Burger King because I remember what my mom would always order there (chicken sandwich and onion rings).

The course of the anime is Ryou being with different people, starting with her cousin. She brings back the joys of cooking.

Taste. Smell. And just being there to fill the void.

Just like me. I started exploring more with food. And eating with others is just as amazing.

I will say that the anime goes KIND OF overboard with the “foodie fan-service”. Like every time someone tastes something, they make it look like potential hentai thumbnails.

There are some slightly perverted scenes and dialogue in this anime. Ignore that and just enjoy the food.

Just focus on Ryou slowly realizing that no one is truly alone. And that she finally has someone eating at her table again.

10. Laid-Back Camp

Love camping? Well, for a bunch of high school students, they get the opportunity to find and explore various campsites. It’s a competition to find who can find the most landmarks, and gather the most stamps. Winning group wins a large supply of steamed buns. Adventure? Friendship? And food? Sign me up!

It takes a special kind of wholesome anime to get on my list of Must Watches. And thank god this isn’t one of those stupid anime with idiot/annoying characters and perverted jokes.

Umaru-chan was one of those anime with dumb gimmicks and a lot of asshole-ry. This is it’s nicer, gentler cousin who only wants to be friends and bake you cookies.

All the characters are likable and add their own depth to this show that’s made of sweet dreams. Working together. Going to new places. Having fun.

As someone who mostly dislikes camping, I might give it another shot after watching this.

9. Chi’s New Address

Meet Chi, a sweet little kitten with a big heart. She lives with the Yamadas, who treat her as both a pet and a child. Her days are filled with new things to discover. Friends who love and will protect her. And a lot of hilarious hi-jinks with the humans!

Kawaii anime at its best!

As someone who owns three cats, this is cuteness overload! Chi is an adorable kitty that, despite the trouble she can cause, is someone you just can’t stay mad at!

Her simplistic design already won me over. The animation and design of the human characters are an absolute win. (Sometimes dot eyes are better than big, glassy, eat-your-soul ones)

Remember in the first series of Pokemon when Ash’s Pokemon got lost on an island, along with Team Rocket’s own Pokemon? I love how much more personality they have when given their own spotlight.

That’s exactly what this anime does. A balance between seeing the lives of humans. Then seeing the lives of animals. And sometimes they share the spotlight together.

8. Bananya

Bananya is a mysterious cat that lives inside a banana. You never know if a bunch of bananas sitting on your kitchen table is merely fruit or something far sweeter. When humans aren’t around, these cats come out of their banana disguises to come out and play!

I discovered this franchise sitting next to the Pusheen Cat merch at a Box Lunch. They were honestly adorable (although not as much as Pusheen).

I didn’t even know about the anime until I streamed on VRV. It’s about as slicey-lifey as wonder bread.

If you watched this and a YouTube cat video at the same time, you wouldn’t even tell the difference (even though one’s dressed like it’s going viral in a Peanut Butter Jelly Time video).

There really is no plot. You have a bunch of kitties hopping around on their stems (did I forget to mention the main setting is a kitchen?).

It’s honestly the perfect anime to watch when you’re doing something else and need audio to keep you going. The narrator feels like a great person to have a conversation with.

If there’s one thing I really don’t like, it’s some of the characters. Bananya is the MC, and, of course, he’s likable. But then we got the stereotypical girly cat Bananyako whose only role is that she’s the main girl. And she makes everyone know about it.

All she does is talk about makeup. How “beautiful” she is. And having a crush on the other character Long-Haired Bananya (who is even more egotistical).

I really don’t see these characters as even remotely close to friends. Just a bunch of banana-cats who live in the same kitchen.

But then no plot means nothing to stress over, right? They’re just there for serotonin!

7. PriPri Chii-chan!!

Kind, always helpful girl Yuuka one days discovers a tiny creature stuck in a whole. She rescues it and takes it home. Touched and relieved she didn’t experiment on him, Chii-chan gives his loyalty to her. Thus begins a beautiful friendship between two characters from two different worlds. One from the surface. One from underground. Their lives are never boring. And more often than not, humans and creatures find a friendship just as wonderful as Yuuka and Chii-chan’s.

If you think Ash and Pikachu had a great friendship, watch this. When you think of anime BFFs, you’ll be thinking of Yuuka and Chii-chan.

I am a sucker for cute anime that involves humans meeting creatures that really don’t mean any harm. After watching Goblin Slayer for the first time and absolutely hating myself, this was a relief.

You have Yuuka, who is what gives us hope for humanity. Whenever someone is in need of help, she will not hesitate to do so. So when she suddenly discovers this weird, round creature stuck in the ground, she doesn’t run away or mess with it (like a certain YouTuber who found a dead body and vlogged about it). She helps it.

Like finding a lost animal. She makes sure Chii-chan is clean, warmed, and well-rested. She even goes as far as washing his garment while sewing him a new one. So of course Chii-chan swears undying loyalty to Yuuka! She just saved his life and practically spoiled him upon first meeting!

As the episodes progress, we get introduced to other characters.

There’s Ucchan, an alien who crashed on Earth. Like Chii-chan, Yuuka took her in. While we have no idea if the adorable alien will ever return to her planet, she has found her home. She’s every bit as sweet and helpful as Yuuka. And just like Chii-chan, she gives undying loyalty to her too.

And then there’s Joe-kun. He’s like a badass Keropi. Adventure-prone. Violent. And always so soft whenever Yuuka’s attention is on him (he has it bad for her).

The human cast are just as interesting. Their interactions with characters like Chii-chan give us a vision of what good humanity is.

In most media, we humans are depicted as assholes when we come across non-human creatures who really mean no harm. We just end up taking their lives for granted, going as far as dissecting and experimenting just to see how they work.

Or, you know, the other way around. Where creatures, devoid of all emotion, just kill people for sh*ts and giggles.

But this anime calms me. It gives me what I often dream about human-nonhuman interactions (and I’m not just talking about a person having a dog).

There’s no threat. No bad-mouthing. No violence. The characters just listen and understand each other.

This is the peace I want to see if we ever come across a situation like this. Whether it be aliens. Or adorable underground dwellers.

6. Asteroid in Love

When she was little, Mira met a boy named Ao at a campsite. Together, they went stargazing where she discovered a star with the same name as herself. However, Ao has no star with his name. Before parting, she promised him one day they would meet again, and find a star to name after him. Years later, while attending high school, Mira learns that the astronomy club and the geological club have merged into the earth science club. And she ends up meeting Ao again—who turns out to actually be a girl!

Say what you want, there is no lesbian romance in this despite the descripton. And in anime, it’s really easy to mistake gender.

Every episode features the girls learning more from their combined groups. At first, Mira isn’t happy that the astronomy club she was joining is merged with another club, something she has no interest in. But then trying new things is the trope of this entire series.

A lot of scenes center around her and Ao. And no, once again, NOT lesbians.

Their time together when they were little kids at a campsite was short-lived, so Mira didn’t have a lot of time getting to know Ao. Now in the same school and club, she knows the real Ao.

And just because she’s not a boy doesn’t make their friendship any less different than before. I mean, maybe she might be a little disappointed, but she got over it really quickly by the first episode!

A great watch if you want to see wholesome friendship mixed with a love of stars.

5. Azumango Daioh

A group of high school girls fill their days with the craziness of their personalities. You got one who’s a 10-year-old genius. Another who’s a loose canon. And one who sparks a lot of lesbian crushes which she is unaware of. If you think their nuts, just look at the teachers (one of them possibly perverted).

This was one of the first forms of anime I discovered in the early 2000s. It made me want to keep away from all anime.

But then as I got older and this slowly came to mind, I gave it another chance.

It’s still retarded. But a good laugh.

I won’t lie. 2 of the 3 main teachers suck. We got one who’s super competitive and super petty when her nicer, prettier best friend gets adoration from their students. And a male teacher who makes it very clear he often imagines female students undressing.

Then we got the main high school girls. Who are all crazy.

Except for maybe Chiyo. Ten-years-old. Adorable. And a genius.

Tomo is definitely the one you have to look out for. She’s one feisty bitch.

There’s one thing I do remember from this anime that added to the sheer ridiculousness: the short scenes involving the ONE GUY.

He’s a random high school student that often pops up just for filler. Or to bring some focus to the male classmates if not for a moment. He has no real role except for maybe a few lines.

I still prefer him over Professor Pervert.

4. If My Favorite Pop Idol Made It to the Budokan, I Would Die

Being an idol is hard, especially for shy, low-ranked member Maina of the newbie idol group ChamJam. Fortunately for her, she does have a fan: former average woman Eripiyo who dedicates her life to Maina and her group. She’s so obsessed with her favorite idol. She constantly buys merch. Takes on countless jobs in order to watch every concert featuring ChamJam. And makes it her duty to ensure Maina’s well-known to everyone.

I am not a huge fan of anime centering on idols. Because that stuff is so overrated and the songs are almost never good. That’s why opening and endings theme songs are more popular. Because they’re actually catchy.

However, the title is what made me give it a chance. And it did not disappoint.

I know the music world can eat people up. That’s why it takes Justin Bieber balls to live in it. But for girls like Maina, it’s nerve-wracking. I had actually felt her anxiety every single time she and her group went on stage.

And what’s even more relatable? How sometimes life doesn’t always feed your expectations.

ChamJam is barely recognizable compared to other idol groups. Granted, they’re somewhere in the middle with a few hundred fans. But still pretty small when they got other, more experienced groups taking the spotlight before them.

I personally felt this one. Because sometimes I feel like my talents don’t get the best results either. Like someone uploads a Tik Tok of themselves bobbing their head like an idiot to “M to the B” and get millions of views. And then someone else does it, and the video only gets 200 views in 3 days.

But then there’s this thing called progress. Sometimes your Tik Toks won’t get the results you hope for. Other times, the results are better than you imagined.

And that’s what Maina and ChamJam experience during the first season. They know they still have a long way. But they have people who really do like them and support them.

You might think Eripiyo is just an annoying, semi-protagonist whose only role is to represent obsessive fandoms. But she is actually an example of someone who genuinely does support her favorite group.

We’re all part of a fandom. And we show our love for it whenever we get the chance. And don’t deny that someone of us wouldn’t go above and beyond the things Eripiyo does in the anime (I sure am not).

So this is the one idol-centric anime that I highly recommend you watch. You’ll be staying by ChamJam’s side all the way.

3. Gal and Dino

After a drunk night, Kaeda ends up bringing a dinosaur home. Now it lives with her like a roommate! But maybe it’s not a bad thing. After all, her new friend is quickly picking up on human things!

When I read the title, I didn’t know what to expect. Well, actually, I expected one thing, but that’s too gross to write about.

And *cough*unfortunately*cough* this isn’t that kind of anime.

The series did introduce me to the Japanese word “gyaru”, which mostly consists of fashion (like bringing early 2000s to 2021). And fashion is a big deal in this series because the main female is showing her dino companion how to work it.

If I had to choose between Kaede or Dino, obviously the latter. That goofy face is what got me hooked to this anime in the first place! And he keeps that expression throughout every episode!

There is some sweet wholesomeness in this rather spontaneous series. Dino interacts with other people. Like Kaede’s best friend. The sweet old lady with the cats. Kaede’s ex.

And Dino wins them all over! Just like he won over watchers like me!

I don’t know what Funimation had in mind when this anime was being made. But no doubt Dino is their finest creation. If not, the poster boy for their company.

2. Tamagotchi!!

Join Mametchi and his friends all around the world of Tamagotchi! Whether it’s cleaning the classroom for their beloved teacher. Teaching siblings how to be brave. Or learning how to make really good donuts. Never a dull moment!

I had one of these in the early 2000s. It died and I got bored of it.

I never even knew the toy came with an anime. I honestly thought only Pokemon could have that privilege.

One day I was on YouTube, and then suddenly there’s a movie. With actual characters.

Not wanting to spoil anything, but a human in another world, especially one that is Tamagotchi, is everything to me. And I hope to god there’s a sequel somewhere down the line for this franchise. (Actually, it did have a sequel, but I’m just hoping for more movies. I mean, Sailor Moon keeps getting films, and that anime is overrated and missing the point)

I used to think the characters in the toys were lifeless. Boring. Nothing to be excited over. And 2000s kids were just easy to please.

But the anime gives these once 8-bit characters personalities we can easily fall in love with. Mametchi is my favorite among the cast. Brilliant-minded. Super helpful. And completely modest. It’s no wonder most of the girls in his class adore him!

Close second favorite is Kuchipatchi. He had nothing going for him in his toy line until they finally made him the lovable dumbass in the anime. Like a Kronk to Mametchi’s Izma.

The toys are still around. Probably because millennials want a taste of the 90s/2000s back. They still suck in my opinion.

But this anime, it’s everything. Like Pokemon everything.

1. By the Grace of Gods

Ryoma was once a miserable, lonely man who died an embarrassing death. However, three gods have taken sympathy on him, and offer to reincarnate him in another world. Now transformed into an 8-year-old, Ryoma lives in a magical realm where he has powers. And living in a forest with his many slimes. With the gods’ blessing, they watch as he finally lives his life of relaxation, fun, and happiness. After three years, Ryoma comes across the first ever people since his reincarnation. This one meeting will make his world much bigger than he ever thought in his previous life.

When I first saw the description, I didn’t know what the anime was going to give me. I mean, the fact there would be slimes in it made me think it would be like “That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime” (which is a badass anime).

I didn’t know what to expect because a middle-aged man was going back to being a kid!

But then after watching the first three episodes, I realized: this is exactly the anime that I needed.

That everyone needed.

You have sweet Ryoma who doesn’t let his past life taint with his new one. And carrying on the knowledge of his adulthood to make things easier in his new world. As a former worker of a black company, he won’t allow anyone to suffer the same experience.

Knowing Japan has a high suicide rate, especially among office works, it was pretty dark seeing Ryoma nonchalantly tell the audience about his life. His mother died and he ended up being alone. The company he works for is corrupted and abuses him. He barely has any sleep and is practically dead inside before even dying.

Those moments still get mentioned throughout the first season. But they merely are just after-thoughts that Ryoma brings when he decides to open his own business.

What I really love about this anime is how he opens his heart to everyone. Even the toughest of characters.

In a world where adventurers view slimes as disgusting and useless, Ryoma gathers and cares for them like his own pets. And in return, they protect and fight for him. As he does the same for the people that came into his life.

Can I also add that when he was looking for new hires, he took in two former assassins?

He’s not afraid. And he’s definitely not going to let anyone’s past get in the way of their future. Much like himself.

He even applies modern-world benefits that are very rare in the time his new world lives in. He gives days’ off. Vacations. Even free room and meals!

Every time I watch an episode, my heart feels with warmth because Ryoma is so loved! And he spreads that love to all those around him, even the hardest of hearts!

Which is exactly why this is #1 on the list.

You can take your Boruto crap and suck on a Titan’s butthole. I’m going to chill in front of my computer and watch a boy and his slimes!

Slice of Life/ Comedy Anime’s?

I’ve tried K-ON but I can’t seem to get into it. Although the music and band theme going on does seem interesting.

All of the animes you listed are more rom-coms than they are slice-of-life/comedy. However, I’m going to assume you really mean slice-of-life/comedy.

I can recommend a few:
A-Channel:
A-Channel is definitely not the best slice of life comedy there is, but it is enjoyable. I myself rated it 9 based on enjoyment. You might not like it if you didn’t like K-ON!, but you can always try it. Also, keep in mind that the first episode is probably the weakest episode in A-Channel.

Minami-ke:
Minami-ke’s first season is great. Do watch it. The other seasons though. Well they are pretty much crap. Well, when compared to the first season at least. I’d suggest not even watching the 2nd and 3rd season. Better to leave some good memories from Minami-ke, rather than bad ones (if you enjoy the first season that is).

Lucky Star:
Lucky Star is one of my favourite shows ever. I don’t know if it will be your thing, but I certainly liked it. I recommed that you watch it, but only if you are somewhat familiar with the Japanese pop culture. If not, I recommend that you come back to this later after watching more different anime. You can enjoy it without being familiar with lots of anime or Japanese pop culture, but some jokes rely heavily on you knowing about them so it is preferable to know what exactly is the anime making parody of.

From what MasterSpark listed, Hanasaku Iroha are all definitely older teens (they actuially graduate during the series), and with Minami-ke the sisters are all different ages, from high school to elementary school. It focuses on them all equally.

Are SLICE OF LIFE anime boring?

There seems to be a lot of people in anime community who find this genre boring.

What are your thoughts do you find it BORING(WHY?) or do you find it RELAXING and ENGAGING like I DO(it is my FAVORITE GENRE)?

Before I started watching a bunch of them I really thought they were boring. I mean how interesting can something be that seemingly has no story behind it?

But especially after watching Non Non Biyori I understood that it can just be really calming and funny at the same time. Now it’s actually one of my favourite genres, especially paired with comedy and maybe even ecchi :3

I tend to avoid slice of life because I prefer series with action. I don’t mind series that combine both. but if the show is basically just slice of life (or doesn’t include elements that I find interesting) I don’t watch them. I have seen a few of them though and comedy was what made it so fun to watch. Also, they can be used as a break when you watch something dark and/or depressing.

So no, they aren’t all boring but they can be.

I love slice of life animes so much. Though I must agree that sometimes they’re a little boring yeah.

That being said, I still watch them and I probably always will because they’re so relaxing to me. When an anime is too complex and there’s too much going on, it only stresses me more which is the last thing I need haha. Don’t get me wrong I like action, suspense and complexity once in a while, but most of the time after a hard day’s work all I need is a chill story and characters that I can relate to.

My two favorites from the genre are Working!! and Lucky Star.

Some of my favorites are SoL and there are several reasons for that. I either found the characters relatable, funny, started caring for them for some reason or the combination(s) of these. For some reason, anime made me appreciate these kinds of shows, they can sometimes be very entertaining for me.

And oh boy, you haven’t seen comedy if you haven’t watched Danshi Koukosei no Nichijou, Yuru Yuri, Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, etc.

They can be, but then again you can get boring shows in any genres.

As long as a SoL is accompanied with good characters, settings, music and comedy it’ll do fine in my eyes. I especially love the combination of calming SoL with some nice comedy moments that aren’t too over the top, like Non Non Biyori and Yuru Camp.

I can understand people not liking the genre because they prefer fast paced shows with plots. Doesn’t make the whole genre boring though.

The videos by both BobSamurai and MudanTV are embarrassing. I watched them a while ago and they are worthless both at analytic level and at trying to explain or understand the appeal of SoL they don’t get. Mudan’s is worse because aside from reductive it is insulting and condescending towards its fans.

It is extremely easy to not be into slice of life. After all, not everybody wants to see routines, and not everybody is into plotlines that simply let things flow instead of focusing on a threat or a conflict. I actually watched a bit of both videos and dear God. Bob Samurai is into manly stuff and complains that cuteness does nothing for him, which is his good right, but it’s ironic when a soy boy like him says that.

The guy in the other video was even cringier. Being as superficial as he can get and dares to call other idiots and that those who enjoy slice of life have crap taste, lol. Again, it’s ok if he don’t enjoy the genre and he’s free to create a video about it, but he should put more effort into his argumentation instead of bashing it, even if it is just supposed to represent his honest opinion. He also seems to lack basic empathy or he simply doesn’t want to understand the appeal. Maybe he should’ve talked with fans of the genre before or whatever. In any case, more than enough reasons why you shouldn’t take his opinion seriously not to mention how hard he’s trying to speak with a deep voice

SOL is either a hit-or-miss depending on the story and/or plot of the show.

It’s good if it actually has Progression or Character development behind the story, but If it’s just your typical everyday nonsense then it’s pretty damn boring I would say.

The biggest example on this would be Clannad and Clannad : AS

In Clannad, we have your typical everyday nonsense where the story/development progresses albeit slowly.
Clannad : AS focuses more on the relationship and development of the MC and has little time for nonsense.

Examples of SOL that actually has progression/development :
Hinamatsuri / Nodame Cantabile / 3-gatsu no Lion

Examples of SOL that is utter nonsense that bores me to death.
Working / Hyouka / Seitokai Yakuindomo

Di sebuah Akademi Musik Momogaoka, terdapat seorang mahasiswa populer dari jurusan piano bernama Shinichi Chiaki. Tidak hanya populer, ia juga tampan, mandiri, rajin, dan berbakat dalam memasak.

Telah diketahui, Chiaki merupakan putra dari seorang pianis terkenal bernama Chiaki Masayuki. Meskipun ia merupakan anak dari pianis populer, tujuan sebenarnya adalah untuk menjadi seorang konduktor.

Ceritanya yang unik dengan karaker perempuan waifuable dimana semuanya akan akan diterima oleh sang tokoh utama. Maksud diterima semuanya bukan berarti harem, tetapi ketika cerita dengan salah satu heroine selesai, maka di episode selanjutnya cerita akan diulang dengan heroine yang berbeda.

Wagnaria, merupakan sebuah restoran keluarga yang setiap hari ramai pengunjung. Karena pelanggan Wagnaria semakin bertambah dan ramai, salah satu pelayan bertubuh mungil bernama Popura Taneshima diminta untuk mencarikan karyawan baru untuk berkerja di Wagnaria.

Dalam upayanya untuk mencari orang yang ingin bekerja di restoran tersebut, Popura mengalami kesulitan karena tubuhnya yang kecil dan membuat banyak orang tidak menyadari kehadirannya. Pada saat itu ia bertemu dengan seorang remaja bernama bernama Souta Takanashi.

Awalnya Souta menganggap bahwa Popura adalah seorang gadis kecil yang tersesat. Setelah menyadari bahwa Popura lebih tua dengannya, Souta yang segera menyukai Popura karena wujud anak kecilnya akhirnya menyetujui penawaran pekerjaan tersebut.

Disana ia diperkenalkan dengan beberapa karyawa dengan sifat yang beranekaragam, dari yang pemalas, dingin, bermuka dua, dan lain-lain. Ini adalah kisah keseharian para pegawai restoran yang tak biasa dengan penuh keseruan dan canda tawa.

Sudah jelas dari sinopsis bahwa seri ini latar utamanya adalah restoran, jadi di sepanjang cerita kebanyakan kamu akan disuguhkan berbagai keseharian lucu melalui dialog, tingkah para tokoh, dan lain-lain hanya di sekitar restoran.

Disini tidak hanya menyajikan comedy saja, tapi terdapat unsur romance yang sangat manis dari beberapa karyawan sehingga Working!! layak untuk dijadikan rekomendasi yang bagus sebagai Anime Romance Slice of Life dengan tambahan comedy di dalamnya.

9. Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. (Oregairu)

Menjauhkan diri dari dunia sosial, lalu menjadi seorang penyendiri, dan menganggap bahwa hubungan sosial dan masa remaja merupakan sebagai pandangan buruk adalah sifat yang dimiliki remaja SMA bernama Hachiman Hikigaya.

Ketika ditanya tentang masa depannya, Hachiman lebih memilih untuk menjadi seorang pengangguran daripada harus bekerja karena hal tersebut ia anggap sebagai pilihan terbaik bagi kehidupannya.

Karena sifatnya tersebut, sang guru bernama Shizuka Hiratsuka yang khawatir tentang masa depan Hachiman memaksanya untuk masuk ke dalam klub bernama Volunteer Service Club dimana disana ia harus membantu berbagai permasalahan yang dialami para murid disekolah.

Tugas tersebut merupakan hal yang paling dibenci oleh Hachiman namun ia terpaksa harus melakukannya karena diminta oleh gurunya.

Ia tidak sendirian, ditemani bersama dengan gadis cantik populer dengan julukan “Ratus Es” bernama Yukino Yukinoshita dengan masalah yang sama, yaitu masalah tentang dunia sosial, apakah mereka mampu mengubah pandangan mereka tentang dunia masyarakat setelah memulai tugasnya dengan membantu orang lain?

Karena ceritanya berkaitan dengan masalah karakter tentang dunia sosial, sudah pasti character devolpmentnya harus disajikan dengan baik.

Seperti terlihat dalam sinopsis, sang karakter utama, Hachiman awalnya hanyalah laki-laki apatis terhadap segala hal dan bersifat dingin, namun seiring berjalannya waktu sifatnya berangsur-angsur mulai berubah, begitu juga dengan Yukino.

Awal-awal cerita yang memberikan kisah slice of life dimana Anggota Klub Volunteer Service harus membantu para kliennya dengan comedy sederhana namun lucu. Sedangkan dipertengahan cerita, elemen romanya mulai menguat dan memberikan kisah dramatis yang mengesankan untuk ditonton. Maka dari itu, Oregairu layak masuk ke dalam list sebagai Anime Romance Slice of Life Terbaik

8. Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun

Shizuku Mizutani, siswa perempuan kelas satu yang memiliki sifat pendiam, jarang bersosialisasi, dan tidak peduli terhadap segala hal selain nilai sekolahnya. Kehidupan penyendirinya seketika berubah ketika ia bertemu dengan siswa nakal bernama Yoshida Haru.

Awal kejadian dimulai saat Mizutani diminta oleh gurunya untuk memberikan materi pelajaran kepada Haru yang duduk di sampingnya karena sejak hari pertama masuk sekolah, Haru tidak pernah menampakkan diri di lagi karena berkelahi dengan seniornya.

Untuk itu, selain memberikan materi, Mizutani juga diminta membujuk Haru supaya ia mau bersekolah lagi. Ketika dalam perjalanan ke tempat Haru berada untuk memberikan materi pelajaran, ia sedang melihatnya sedang bersama dengan empat temannya.

Ia menyadari sesuatu yang tidak biasa kepada empat teman Haru. Tampaknya mereka terlihat tidak menganggap Haru sebagai temannya. Karena Haru tidak memiliki sesorang untuk dijadikan sebagai teman sungguhan, akhirnya ia meminta Mizutani untuk menjadi temannya.

Karena mereka sama-sama tidak memiliki teman, Mizutani yang tahu betul perasaan Haru akhirnya menerima permintaan pertemanannya. Akhirnya mereka pun mulai berteman dan seiring berjalannya waktu, hubungan mereka terjalin semakin erat.

Anime Romance Slice of life dengan pasangan unik dimana walaupun sifat mereka berbeda, tingkahnya kedua karakter menjadi sisi comedy yang sangat menghibur karena comedy seri ini pada dasarnya emang berasal dari tingkah karakter yang menarik dan konyol.

Taiga memiliki perasaan terhadap sahabat Ryuuji bernama Yuusaku Kitamura sedangkan Ryuuji memiliki perasaan terhadap sahabat Taiga bernama Minori Kushieda. Setelah rahasia mereka terbongkar, keduanya akhirnya menjalin kerjasama supaya mempermudah untuk mencapai tujuan mereka masing-masing.

Seorang gadis remaja 16 tahun bernama Tooru Honda harus menerima takdir menyedihkan karena ibunya telah meninggal dalam sebuah kecelakaan dan membuat ia terpaksa harus tinggal bersama dengan kakek dan neneknya.

Namun karena rumah kakek neneknya baru direnovasi, Tooru terpaksa harus mencari tempat tinggal lain untuk sementara waktu. Karena tidak ingin merepotkan orang lain, Tooru akhirnya tinggal sebuah hutan hanya dengan menggunakan tenda.

Dalam kehidupannya, ia segera terseret dalam rangkaian peristiwa bersama dengan beberapa keluarga Souma, mereka terdiri dari: Yuki Souma, siswa populer di sekolahnya yang dianggap sebagai pangeran dan sepupunya bernama Shigura Souma.

Tooru terkejut mengetahui bahwa tanah yang ia tinggali merupakan tanah milik keluarga Shouma dan ia segera mengatakan bahwa ia akan membayar sewanya. Karena rasa simpatiknya, keluarga Souma mengijinkan Tooru menetap di rumahnya untuk sementara.

Ketika Tooru mulai memasuki kehidupan keluarga Souma, ia segera menemukan sebuah rahasia aneh yang melibatkan tentang masa lalu kelam dari keluarga tersebut.

Berbeda dari Anime Romance Slice of Life lainnya, Fruit Basket memiliki keunikan sendiri dimana ceritanya memberikan elemen fantasy dan supernatural di dalamnya. Anime Shoujo yang fokus terhadap tokoh utama wanita, yaitu Tooru yang menyajikan reverse harem dengan cerita lurus namun sulit untuk ditebak.

Untuk grafis, karena ini tergolong agak lama, jika dibandingkan dengan grafis sekarang mungkin kurang nyaman ditonton tapi grafis seperti ini pada jamannya sebenarnya sudah bagus. Jika kamu ingin menonton anime ini dengan grafis yang lebih baik, mungkin kamu bisa menunggu Fruit Basket remake yang akan tayang pada tahun 2019 nanti.

5. Fune wo Amu

Sebuah proyek kamus baru dengan judul “The Great Passage” akan dibuat, Sayangnya si pembuat, yaitu Kouhei Araki sebagai editor veteran yang bekerja di Genbu Shobo bagian editorial ingin pensiun dan segera mencari penggantinya supaya proyek tersebut bisa diselesaikan.

Namun mencari seseorang dengan kemampuan merangkai kata sangatlah sulit bagi Kouhei, karena kemampuan tersebut juga sulit untuk dikuasai karena membutuhkan waktu, dedikasi, dan kesabaran yang sangat tinggi.Tetapi, Kouhei akhirnya berhasil mendapatkan orang yang tepat untuk menggantikan posisinya.

Ia adalah Mitsuya Majime, seorang pria yang juga bekerja di Genbu Shobo bagian penjualan yang tidak memiliki kemampuan bersosialisasi kepada masyarakat, dan tidak mampu membaca situasi.

Namun karena rasa cinta dan dedikasinya terhadap buku dari Mitsuya, ia memiliki keterampilan dalam merangkai kata-kata dengan sangat baik. Setelah mengetahui keahilan yang dimiliki Mitsuya, Kouhei segera memindahkan pekerjaan Mitsuya dari bagian Penjualan ke Editorial.

Romancenya agak sedikit, namun terasa, dan dramanya sangat menakjubkan untuk ditonton. Setting yang tidak biasa yaitu Mengangkat tema pekerjaan dengan Konsep maupun alur fokus terhadap pekerjaan di sebuah kantor.

Karakternya cukup menarik, merkea dibuat dengan realistis, memiliki kelebihan dan kekuarang sendiri. Secara keseluruhan, Fune Wo Amu sangat bagus dan layakn ditonton sebagai Anime Romance Slice of Life Terbaik.

4. Bokura wa Minna Kawai-sou

Cerita berkisar tentang remaja bernama Usa Kazunari yang mulai memasuki masa SMA dengan rencana untuk menjalani hidup mandiri dan dan tinggal seorang sendiri supaya mendapatkan ketenangan,

Jika kamu kenal anime Sakurasou pet no Kanojo, maka bisa dikatakan bahwa konsep seri ini hampir sama, yaitu adanya tempat penginapan yang ditinggali oleh tokoh utama yang normal bersama dengan orang-orang aneh.

Berbagai Comedy ringan dibawakan dengan baik melalui orang-orang aneh tersebut dari Asrama Kawaisou serta romance nya yang unik dimana interaksi unik dari pasangan tokoh utama mampu menciptakan situasi romance yang enak untuk ditonton sehingga layak direkomendasi sebagai Anime Romance Slice of Life.

Setelah keluar dari tempat sebelumnya ia bekerja, seorang pria lajang berumur 27 tahun bernama Kaizaki Arata, kini menjadi pria gagal dalam menjalani hidup sebagai masyarakat jepang dan berakhir menjadi seorang pecundang.

Setelah mencari ke berbagai tempat untuk mendapatkan pekerjaan baru, tidak ada kemajuan yang didapat oleh Arata sehingga ia tidak mendapatkan pekerjaan karena kurangnya kemampuan yang ia miliki.

Ketika ia sudah keputusasaan sudah berada di ujung tanduk, ia bertemu dengan seorang pria misterius bernama Ryou Yoake yang muncul di hadapan Arata. Setelah bertemu ia segera menawarkan kepada Arata sebuah pekerjaan untuk nya, yaitu perusahaan bernama ReLife Research Institute.

Namun dengan syarat ia harus melakukan beberapa hal terlebih dahulu, yaitu ia harus mengikuti uji eksperimen bernama “ReLife”, yaitu sebuah eksperiman untuk orang-orang gagal dengan meminum sebuah obat yang dapat membuat seseorang lebih muda 10 tahun lalu menjalani kehidupan remaja untuk memperbaiki diri.

Cerita dengan memberikan kisah seputar sang tokoh utama dewasa untuk membantu para murid remaja dengan pemikiran dewasanya. Alurnya cukup seru, comedynya berasa walaupun hanya sedikit dibuat sederhana tanpa memerlukan adegan berlebihan.

Unsur Slice of lifenya tak perlu ditanyakan lagi karena unsur tersebut sangat menonjol dengan cerita keseharian yang dibuat realistis namun sangat menghinur ditambah romance yang menyentuh hati sehingga membuat seri ini wajib diikuti sebagai Anime Romance Slice of Life.

2. Tsuki Ga Kirei

Mengisahkan tentang siswa yang mulai memasuki tahun ajaran baru sebagai murid kelas 3 SMP. Di SMP Daisan,ada seorang perempuan bernama Akane Mizuno, salah satu murid yang kini sudah menginjak bangku kelas tiga namun berpisah dengan teman-temannya saat kelas ditata ulang.

Gadis yang dikenal sangat hebat dalam lari tersebut memiliki sifat pemalu. Saat mengatasi rasa gugupnya, ia memiliki kebiasaan unik dengan menekan sebuah boneka kentang yang selalu ia bawa kemana-mana karena hal tersebut dapat membuat dirinya tenang.

Sementara itu, seorang siswa laki-laki yang bercita-cita ingin menjadi novelist bernama Kotarou Azumi, ditempatkan di kelas yang sama dengan Akane.

Pada hari dimana bunga sakura bermekaran, Mitsuyoshi yang sedang menggunakan momen indah tersebut untuk berfoto, bertemu dengan gadis turis berambut pirang bernama Teresa Wagner yang berasal dari luar negeri namun sedang tersesat karena terpisah dari dari teman seperjalanannya.

Dalam pertemuan mereka, Teresa meminta Mitsuyoshi untuk memfoto dirinya bersama dengan bunga sakura tersebut, setelah hujan turun, Tada bertemu kembali dengan Teressa dengan keadaan menyedihkan. Karena merasa kasihan, akhirnya Tada menolong Teresa untuk membawanya ke tempat kafe keluarga sambil menunggu teman seperjalananya.

Tak lama kemudian, muncul seorang gadis bermabut merah bernama Alex yang ternyata merupakan teman seperjalanan Teressa. Setelah mereka akhirnya berpisah, ternyata keesokan harinya Mereka sebagai seorang murid baru di sekolah yang sama.

Anime Romance Slice of Life dengan menyelipkan banyak comedy ringan. Walaupun adegan boy meet girls nya terkesan tidak masuk akal dimana banyak terjadi sebuahh kebetulan dan tak realistis, namun isi cerita di dalamnya dijamin membuatmu puas. Grafis buatan Dogakobo berhasil membuat anime ini memiliki Artwork yang sangat indah dan mengesankan.

Also if you really enjoy SoL there is an untagged subgenre of SoL called Iyashikei which means healing in Japanese. It is SoL that are more calm and soothing in nature like Non non Biyori or Yuru camp. They basically have no real conflict, they are generally about visuals and gentle comedy and relaxing stories. One I have yet to watch is the Aria series but it is supposedly very relaxing to watch lots of pretty visuals. I plan to start it in the next few days.

11. Sakura Quest

Sakura Quest is an anime that tells you that life isn’t something you can give up. It follows the story of Sakura, who goes on a quest to finding a job that suits her.

But even after many attempts, she fails to find a good job. One lucky day, she receives a job offer from a travel agency, and she gets a job in a rural village “Manoyama.”

The purpose of her career is to bring Manoyama back to life by attracting tourists to the village. In the beginning, she finds it very hard, but when her friends stay alongside her, she will be able to do her job correctly.

This slice of life anime is about how a dream becomes achievable if you have a strong will, and that dream shouldn’t be small.

Just like in the anime, where girls face many obstacles, and their dream of bringing Manoyama back to life seems almost impossible. But they didn’t give up; instead, they made it possible with everything they’ve got.

10. 5 Centimetres Per Second

5 Centimetres Per Second often regarded as one of the masterpieces of Makoto Shinkai and is well-known for its emotional attachment and heart whelming story.

The story follows Takaki and Akari, who become close friends from regular classmates. But they face hardship when Akari moves to another town because of her parents’ job.

Both of them try to maintain their relationship as it was, but time keeps them apart. But soon Takaki is about to move to a faraway city, so he decides to meet her one last time. Will they reunite again?

The story gets pretty emotional and heartbreaking in the end. Before you watch this slice of anime, make sure to grab some tissues because you’ll eventually end up in tears.

9. Himouto! Umaru chan

Himouto! Umaru chan is about a cute and annoying little sister who leads a double life. Despite being an over-achieving student, she has an entirely different personality at home.

Whenever she turns into a little girl, she becomes lazy, leaving all the household work to his brother Taihei. But when she is normal, her life is just like normal students but fills with passion.

The plot is good, and the characters are well developed, and more than anything it gives you a warm feeling while watching.

What more do you want from a slice of life anime? We would recommend you to watch it if you don’t believe in only strong plots.

8. Orange

Orange is one of the most emotional rollercoasters for sure. It follows the story of Naho Takamiya, who receives a strange letter from her future self. At first, she never believes the message, but after several events, she realizes that it’s true.

The future Naho implies that she shouldn’t repeat the same mistakes that she did and keep a close eye on her classmate Kakeru who plays a crucial role in her life.

If you have seen a slice of life anime like Toradora, they usually highlight romance, but anime like Orange highlights romance, guilt, depression, and bullying. While these aspects are common in some anime series, but it stays unique in the pace and presentation.

Kakeru’s depression due to her mother’s death turns to regret later. This series is deep, and with every episode, it makes you uncomfortable and lets you experience some beautiful scenes as well.

7. ReLIFE

The story follows the life of a 27-year-old Arata Kaizaki. When he quits his first job, he tries to find a fitting job for him, but he fails. But one day, he meets Ryou, a girl who offers him an opportunity to change his life by taking a mysterious pill.

With nothing left to lose, he prefers to give it a chance. And the next morning he wakes up and finds that he is 17 years old. Now he must attend school for a year to make the experiment successful by ReLife Research Institute.

This slice of life anime shows us how tough it is to adjust to a new life and not repeat past mistakes. And we can see that in Arata’s life and how he struggles with his new life. But yet it proves that ReLife is a blessing where you don’t leave any regrets behind.

This chance to do over life isn’t something that you can even in your whole life, but if it is possible, almost everyone would like to have it. ReLife also shows how better one’s life can become if he makes use of this chance in the right way.

6. Poco’s Udon World

Poco’s Udon World follows Souta Tawara, who returns to his hometown, after being away for some time. Although his parents are no longer with him, his home and his family’s beloved restaurant keeps him going on with his life. One day, Souta visits the udon restaurant and finds a young boy resting in the restaurant.

Souta offers him food and clothing, but suddenly the boy sprouts a pair of ears and a tail who is a shape-shifting tanuki. He names him Poco, and eventually, the two of them become best friends, and Souta’s life becomes more meaningful.

Poco’s Udon World lets you feel the essence of a real slice of life anime. “There is no place like Home“- one of the most meaningful and lovely phrases you can recur.

While presenting the heartwarming relationship between Poko and Souta, this slice of life anime lets you know how one’s life can change from being bitter to lovely.

5. TONIKAWA: Over the Moon for You

Nasa Yuzaki is all set to achieve his dream of ranking first in the national mock exam and aiming for the best high school. He is pretty confident that he can make it possible, but life can get manipulative sometimes.

One usual day, he encounters a beautiful girl and tries to approach her. However, he gets saved by the same girl when he was about to get hit by a truck. Still, he can’t stop looking at her and asks her out. To his surprise, the girl agrees, but only if he marries her.

If you’re sick of all the romance dramas with the routine love story stuff, then Tonikaku Kawaii is definitely for you. It is so light-hearted and feels so relaxing. Just from the synopsis, you can pretty much tell the uniqueness in the story.

So, if you’re looking for a slice of life anime with a little romance theme in it, then suit yourself to experience this delightful story that takes you on a beautiful journey.

4. Toradora

The slice of life anime gem is about Ryuji and Taiga who possess quite opposite personalities. Since they both have respective crushes, they form an alliance to make it possible.

Instead of helping each other, their attempts always backfire on them, and they find themselves in awkward romantic situations. Are they destined to be together?

Toradora is very popular among the slice of life romance anime because of its well-written story and masterfully developed characters. In the beginning, you find Taiga repeatedly abusing Ryuji.

As you go through the episodes, you learn more about characters and their backstories. Unlike any other slice of life anime series, it gets intense with every episode.

3. Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day

Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day is an 11-episode anime that you’ll regard as a masterpiece, right after watching it.

The story follows Jinta Yadomi, who lives his everyday life by skipping school and playing video games at home. One day a ghost appears in front of him, and she is none other than his childhood friend Menma who died five years ago in an accident.

She asks him to fulfill a wish of her and willing to accept it, he agrees. Soon he is reunited with his childhood friends while solving the mysteries, and they confront each other’s feelings in the meantime.

Being a slice of life anime, it gets straight to the point in terms of story. With pure fun and warm moments along with some intense mysteries, it entertains you a lot.

If you’re here for the slice of life anime, this would be our best recommendation for you. Make sure you watch it at least once.

2. March Comes in Like a Lion

March Comes in Like a Lion is a rare slice of life anime you can ever find. The story follows Rei Kiriyama, who is a professional Shogi player. As situations demand, he moves into a new apartment in Tokyo. But even though he couldn’t let go of his loneliness and depression.

However, after Rei meets his sisters, who live with their grandfather, helps him with his traditional wagashi shop. Along the journey, the sisters help Rei seeking friendship and better habits to make his life better.

Presenting the story with the professional player of Shogi isn’t just about some strategic game. It shows the complexities of life and how hardships occur in real life if you feel low.

Like how Rei faces loneliness in his life, most of you have already experienced it. But even in hard times, there always lies hope beneath it.

The characters in this slice of life anime make it look more alive. This emotional rollercoaster not only leaves you speechless but also presents you with unusual events that make it more unique than the other ones.

1. Fruits Basket

Fruits Basket is a sweet and warm story that gets you to keep moving along with your life, even if you want to give up on it.

The story follows Tohru Honda, who loses her mother and decides to stand on her own. But as some incidents take place, she ends up living alongside Somas in their house. As she gets more closer to them, Yuki and Kyo find happiness in their life and they treat her like a family.

But little did she know, Somas are different from ordinary people, and there is something unpleasant waiting for Yuki. If you want something to make you feel good, then you must watch this slice of life anime.

The pace isn’t something you should be concerned about because once you roll up into the story, you will just stare at the beautiful moments of the anime.

Fruits Basket came out in 2001, but in 2019, a reboot for the 2001 anime has aired and became a huge success. So, if you are thinking to watch it, we would recommend you go with the reboot.

Best Anime of 2019 – Slice of Life Anime

Slice of Life anime aren’t exactly one of my preferred genres and yet as I find myself getting a little bit older (I won’t suggest wiser) I am finding that calm and relaxing anime are definitely welcome in amongst some of the more plot driven fare I usually consume. 2019 gave me quite a few titles that I watched largely for that calm and stillness after a crazy day at work and so choosing my favourite from the year was definitely harder than I initially thought.

Please note, the nominees and winning choice are entirely my own opinion and are not based on any rigid criteria. Feel free to nominate your own winners for the categories in the comments. Help other readers find some awesome anime from 2019 to watch.

Senryu Shoujo

This was a hard decision between Senryu Shoujo and My Roommate is a Cat. Then again, My Roommate is a Cat already won for my favourite relaxing anime so maybe that influenced my view a bit. Anyway, Senryu Shoujo was perfectly adorable with the main character only communicating through writing poetry. There’s a bit of romance driving through the series but otherwise it really is just the daily lives of the two main characters as they go to school and get involved in school club activities.

There’s all the standards such as a beach episode, a test of courage, a trip to the amusement park and so on. Nothing overly earth shattering but with this cute cast it is very digestible. It was definitely my pick from the slice of life anime I attempted last year.

Okay, I know I’m not a slice of life guru, it isn’t a genre I actively seek out. So let’s get some recommendations from others. What was the best slice of life from 2019?

*Cat* and *Senryuu Girl* would be my top two, and I think I’d choose “Senryuu Girl” as my top one as well.

After being a faithful manga reader for years, I wanted “Joshi Kausei” to take the honors… But the adaptation was horrid and really missed everything charming about the manga.

Like Dawn, I’d also give nods to “Dice Club”, “Wasteful Days”, and especially “Mix”. The last did not get near enough buzz when it was airing.

I still haven’t tried Mix.

Slice of Life is one of my favourite genres, but I have to say it’s been in a bit of decline. Very few shows are pure slice of life anymore. I’d agree with your top two favourites, actually, and I also agree that it’s a tough decision. I think I slightly prefer Cat, but in the end who knows?

2018 actually started out strong for the genre with Yuru Camp, How to Keep a Mummy and Hakumei to Mikochi, and spring had a great piece that could easily serve as as a genre benchmark in Rokuoudou Yotsuiro Biyori, but since then I feel like most slice of life shows either don’t appeal to me as much, or they have a bit too much develpment – be it plot or character (like Cat).

Take Slime: I distinctly remember it watching for my slice-of-life fix, mostly because dedicated shows were missing. I think, in the end, Senryu Shoujo really is the best show, since the romance is mostly fluff and doesn’t completely take over. Mix had strong slice-of-life elements as well and could have gotten a nomination from me, but it’s a bit of a stretch to call it a slice-of-life show in the end. Wasteful Days of Highschool Girls worked pretty well as a slice-of-life show, but there weren’t any moments that weren’t dominated by its brand of comedy. Shows that did have a more conventional slice-of-life balance were Colourful Pastrale and After School Dice club, but the former was more endearing than good, and the latter was pretty solid but not good enough to beat out either of the not-so-clear fits. And a lot of that is subjective, in that it’s about where in my watching I set the accents. I don’t expect people to quite understand why I find one show qualifies and another doesn’t when they’re really quite similar. Also, I will never ever be able to consider Fruits Basket slice of life, even though I do see it on best-of-genre lists. It’s intuitively obvious, but when I try to explain why, I find that I have no underlying reasoning. Heh.

In the end, there hasn’t been a really great example of the slice-of-life genre in 2019 (2018 had two, and they were both in the first half of the year). But both Cat and Senryu Shoujo are close enough to fit. The year I’d vote for Slime in that genre would see me desperate, though (and I liked Slime mostly for its slice-of-life aspect).

The trend continues this season, where Eizouken is great and satisfies some of the itch, but is ultimately too goal driven. And Bofuri is solid but not actually special. Slice-of-life’s a good flavour in Somali.

And then there are the shorts: There’s Room Camp, which is a good teaser for season two of Yuru Camp, but slice-of-life often needs more time to breathe. And Natsunagu seems quite good, but is similarly too short and seems to have a loose plot. Shorts work better as slice-of-life when they’re scene based; Room Camp can at least work with allusion and “summon” mood from Yuru Camp; Natsunagu can’t – and needs you to remember some continuity.

Slice-of-life has been more an ingredient than a genre for around 1 1/2 years now, and I’m not seeing a trend reversal this season. It’s not that much of an issue for me, though, since it remains a pretty solid ingredient in a lot of shows.

With so many additions from the last few years, we thought it was time for a 2021 update to our list of the best slice of life anime around! Everyone has their own reasons for hitting the gym. It could be for fitness, it could be for weight issues, to fit into a cosplay costume, or it could be so they can eat a guilt-free treat. In How Heavy are the Dumbbells You Lift? everyone has their motivator, but the shared goal of getting to the gym and getting better is shared amongst all of these main characters. A group of girls from high school (and one of their teachers) join a local gym and learn to take care of their physical bodies! Chise’s red hair is a sign that she is a rare “Sleigh Beggy,” whose capacity for magic is excellent but whose life is doomed to be cut short. After an unfortunate childhood, Chise finds herself sold at an auction to a tall masked man. The individual introduces himself and is a magus who has been around for many years. Though Chise was supposedly purchased to be his wife, her time living with the magus is spent learning different types of magic and learning more about her personal desires. With many magical creatures, a fun vibe, and an unusual story, check out The Ancient Magus’ Bride!

Rin loves to go solo camping, and she has the process down. She loves to ride out on her bike, set up a tent in the purview of Mount Fuji, and enjoy an evening with a campfire and a book. Her knowledge will be put to the test and expanded when she meets some girls at her local high school who want to know more about camping as well. Get ready for some kawaii adventures, as the story shows these high schoolers prepping for and learning hacks for camping with simplicity. This cute-girls-doing-cute-things anime is a stress-free breath of fresh air.

Saiki K has mental powers that are beyond comparison. He has antennas and pink hair, and to avoid standing out, he has just convinced all of Earth that this is a standard color. When his mother needs the furniture moved? Saiki uses his telepathy and not his muscles. His favorite things are coffee jelly and being left in peace. The Disastrous Life of Saiki K is the story of Saiki going through his high school life with indomitable telepathic abilities, trying not to be noticed. Saiki K has a lot of gag comedy and silly moments that make this show fun and a light watch.

After the death of his mother, Kousei stopped playing the piano. In fact, two years have passed, and Kousei still does not play, even though he has fans who would like for him to do so. Though Kousei’s world has been emptied of music, things soon change after meeting Kaori Miyazono, who plays the violin. Although his pain and grief are not healed, Kousei and Kaori begin to make music together and learn that music is more than mechanical and it is more than a perfect performance. It is felt, and it is an intention of the soul. For a story of growth and working through grief, check out Your Lie in April.

Violet Evergarden looks like a doll. With pretty clothes, clear eyes, blonde hair, and little emotion, she returns from war. Unsure of where her commander is, she is taken in by a household until she gets her life a little more together after returning from war. Along the way, she gets a job at CH Postal Services as an Auto Memory Doll. At this place, patrons express their feelings to an Auto Memory Doll, who puts the intended expressions into a letter for the recipient. Violet is a beautiful girl, but her scars run deep, and her capacity for human emotion is limited. As she takes on clients and processes their feelings, she begins to see some of her own emotions spark into life. Will she come as far as to acknowledge them? Check out Violet Evergarden!

Mushi are small spiritual creatures who do not often come into contact with humans. They live ethereal existences away from the perception of most people. If they do come into contact with someone, the person afflicted sometimes encounters bizarre side effects that impact their ability to live a normal life. Ginko travels the countryside and helps those whose lives have been changed because of the mushi. Though his clients can have high emotions, Ginko’s gentle approach puts them at ease as he assesses their situation and finds a way to help the mushi get back into nature and support the people involved ease their conditions.

Mob is an eighth-grader, is like Saiki K. in that he has vast psychic capabilities. Rather than stand out, Mob decides to suppress his abilities but uses them to impress a girl, and as an anime would have, she does not remain impressed. Mob is later conned by a fake psychic who uses Mob’s powers to make money. Mob now exorcises monsters upon request, and it becomes clear that if Mob’s deep-dwelling abilities are ever brought to the surface by strong emotions or need, that the effects could be so huge that they end the world. For an anime whose slice of life themes are only matched by the comedy it offers, check out Mob Psycho!

In unusual circumstances, Tooru Honda has been taken in by the family of someone she goes to school with. Though the Souma family is welcoming and kind, they have a secret curse that they have to protect. Tooru learns of this and is allowed to stay so long as she keeps it to herself, but as she continues to grow closer to the Soumas, things start to get tense. Is there more to their curse than what she can see? The impacts of the curse are very emotional, and Tooru starts to learn about the scars of her friends as her old personal trauma begins to heal.

Fruits Basket is the story of the daily lives of Tooru and the Souma family, but with a mysterious background that is both dark and needing to see the light. If you watched the first go-around of Fruits Basket, you are missing out on the new series! If follows the manga all the way through instead of coming to an early end, and the last season (Fruits Basket: The Final) is a favorite amongst fans. Check out the recent heavyweight in the josei, slice of life, and high school anime stories.

So the last one we have today is a movie and not a series. A Silent Voice begins with a girl who is deaf and was picked on in school after she transferred in. After things go too far and she changes schools as the result of that bullying, one of her bullies, Shouya Ishida, is singularly blamed. However, the situation was an ongoing contribution from the whole class. The issue was so extreme that Shouya is then looked down on and outcast throughout his elementary and middle school years.

Years have passed, and it is his third year of high school. After all these years, Shouya decides to meet the girl from his childhood and make amends. This story includes a lot of mature emotions and is full of “the feels.” Even if you didn’t play the game or read the manga, A Silent Voice is beautiful in content and animation. For something more lighthearted, we refer you to something else on this list, but for a story that will make you feel and warm your heart, check out A Silent Voice.

Final Thoughts

The last few years have added some genuinely excellent slice of life anime to the genre, and many more didn’t fit on the list of ten that we wanted to showcase today. (Honorable mentions include Barakamon, Nichijou, and Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid.) Slice of Life anime provides viewers with a realistic representation of everyday experiences such as romance, friendships, challenges, and success. While the Slice of Life category can often be intertwined with other elements such as fantasy, drama, historical, and the like, many on this list are very simplistic, essentially viewing the ordinary daily life of people. With that said, in the following anime, we present ten recommendations for the best slice of life series. Sakura Quest follows the conquest of Yoshino Koharu, a new Tokyo transplant in search of a job. After continuously applying for employment in the big city, she still hasn’t had any luck. One lucky day, she gets an offer to work at a travel agency. Overcome with excitement, she accepts the position but fails to read the fine print in her contract. The details include becoming the queen of a small country town for a year, promoting tourism in the area, and the small additions she overlooked. With help from Sanae Kouzuki, Maki Midorikawa, Ririko Oribe, and Shiori Shinomiya, Manoyama Town is going to be a happening place! Long live the queen!

Sakura Quest spotlights young ladies who plan to make a name for themselves in the big city. This slice of life anime puts out the message that a dream can never be too small or impossible. Further down the road, when obstacles stand in the way of a goal, the girls receive immense support from their friends, placing the dream within their grasp. Additionally, as we commonly hear that “life’s not perfect”, our girls in Sakura Quest quickly discover that the joys in life are what people make of them.

It’s said that the loss of a loved one is the most stressful time in one’s life. Kouhei Inuzuka has experienced tragedy after the death of his wife, leaving him to care for his daughter, Tsumugi, as a single parent. With a busy schedule as a teacher on top of being a terrible cook, Kouhei must rely on konbini meals for himself and Tsumugi. However, Kotori Iida, one of Kouhei’s students, offers the family of two to dine at her family’s restaurant. With scheduling conflicts as well, Kotori often dines alone; but not for long as the family decides to eat at the restaurant, cooking and sharing delicious meals with company.

Amaama to Inazuma is a sweet and touching slice of life anime that well rounded. It reminds us of the values of precious time spent on preparing a meal and sharing it with loved ones. It also shows that people can steer clear of their electronics for a short while to bond and enjoy what’s being served. Something we often take for granted except on Thanksgiving holiday, this simple series demonstrate gratitude for the things life provides us.

When 15-year-old Kino is burdened with stress and worry, she unwinds, finding comfort in traveling. Going to new places and discovering different sights and people, there is nothing she finds more satisfying. Fearless and adventurous, Kino is prepared for any uncertainty that may strike on her journeys, armed with her handguns, Cannon and Woodsman. With her trusty motorcycle, Hermes, the two of them travel the vast countryside, never settling in one place for more than three days.

Kino no Tabi awakens the thrill-seeking spirit within us, taking us to new and exciting places that we only dream of. This slice of life series shares new civilizations and lives, respecting environments and cultures different from our own. Portraying stunning animation and beautiful landscapes, we come to learn that the vast unknown is riddled with discoveries and dangers.

Fifteen-year-old Makoto Kowata is an apprentice witch who is leaving her home in Yokohama in pursuit of witchcraft studies. Along with her companion Chito, a black cat familiar, they embark on a journey to Aomori, an area recognized as a significant magical hub. Settling in Aomori, Makoto and Chito commence their new lives with her cousins, Kei and Chinatsu. Although Makoto can balance school and witchcraft effortlessly, she is having difficulty blending into her new surroundings. Makoto’s peaceful life is thus bombarded with the peculiarities of magical training.

Flying Witch is a feel-good slice of life anime series that captures the essence of what it means to be a young witch in training. Far away from the big city, living in Aomori appears pretty laid back, giving us a glimpse of the region’s beautiful landscape paired with serene musical accompaniment. The characters are down to earth and charming, making Flying Witch a relaxing binging experience.

Yuki Takeya may be one of the few people who love school so much she doesn’t want to leave! A third-year student, Yuki is a member of the School Living Club at Megurigaoka High School. Yuki, along with club members Yuuri Wakasa, Kurumi Ebisuzawa, Miki Naoki, Megumi Sakura-sensei, and the club dog Taroumaru, set out to make the club and school life the best and most positive experience they can be. However, the club is a mask to shield what’s going on around them, to escape a zombie apocalypse where they have barricaded themselves inside the school as the sole survivors. The other members are challenged with staying alive as well as keeping the truth from Yuki.

Gakkougurashi! is all about keeping up with false appearances, as Yuki’s story may seem like a relaxing slice of life series, but twisted with outlasting the zombie apocalypse! The girls have banded together in their school to survive and also maintain some normalcy. Lol, we can say there is nothing ordinary about zombies! Each character stands out from one another in addition to complementing the group as a whole. Exciting and filled with tons of action, the slice of life genre is present along with psychological, horror and mystery.

Aoba Suzukaze is a recent high school graduate, ready to impact the workforce by being employed at a famous gaming company. Aoba has been into games throughout her life. Incidentally, the individual who happened to create the game Aoba loved as a child is her supervisor. In addition to her excitement, she is working on future installments of this very game that drew her in from the start. In awe and admiration, Aoba is compelled to put in her most significant efforts at the company to be as successful as her predecessor. We also see the collectiveness that comes together in creating such imaginative productions.

In New Game!, Aoba strives to become part of the entertainment industry, trying to make a name for herself in society. Aoba is new to the field with a lot to learn and experiences various events that contradict her previous ideals in the area. New Game! features an adorable cast, which we believe spotlights the innocence Aoba possess in starting out on her endeavors.

After being away for quite some time, Souta Tawara returns to his hometown in Kagawa, taking a break from the excitable busy city of Tokyo. Although his parents are no longer around, his home and family-owned udon restaurant remind him of the good times shared with his family. Visiting memory lane, Souta enters the udon restaurant and discovers a young boy sleeping. Thinking nothing of it, Souta offers the young boy food and clothing. However, the boy suddenly sprouts a furry pair of ears and a tail! Souta comes to learn that the boy is the rumored shape-shifting tanuki that has been inhabiting Kagawa for many years. Naming him Poko, the two of them build an unlikely companionship, offering to one another a sense of home and belonging.

“There’s no place like home.” Udon no Kuni no Kiniro Kemari follows the heartwarming relationship between Souta and Poko, two distinct and intriguing personalities. The story has a reflective characteristic, making us reminisce about our past and cherishing the “good times.” A relaxing slice of life anime, Udon no Kuni no Kiniro Kemari reminds viewers that the little things left behind are never entirely lost.

Order up! with the second season of Gochuumon wa Usagi desu ka?? After a year at the café, Kokoa Hoto has adjusted flawlessly to waitressing at the Rabbit House even though it is not how she envisioned it to be initially. Kokoa continues to enjoy spending time with her coworkers and friends, getting involved in all sorts of adventures. Encountering peculiar guests, rival cafés, treasures and risqué menu items, what will Rabbit House get into next?

Gochuumon wa Usagi desu ka?? is an enjoyable slice of life series that contains a great story complemented by endearing characters and tons of comedy dispersed throughout. Kokoa, Chino, Sharo, Rize, and Chiya are all super adorable with varied personalities to make the group dynamic invigorating. Building from the first season, Gochuumon wa Usagi desu ka?? shows viewers new experiences that are improved from the last.

ReLIFE documents the life of 27-year-old Arata Kaizaki. After quitting his first company job, Arata bounces around from one place to the next, often regarded as a loser by those who know him. On one occasion in his uneventful life, Arata is introduced to Ryou Yoake, a member of the ReLife Research Institute. Ryou offers him an opportunity to change his life by taking a mysterious pill. With nothing left to lose, Arata takes the pill, waking up the next day to find that he is 17 years old again. Now engaged in a unique experiment for the ReLife Research Institute, Arata must attend high school as a transfer student for one year. Believing that the task will be straightforward, Arata is proven wrong.

ReLIFE follows Arata’s struggle adjusting to his new but hectic life, learning to avoid all of his past mistakes. Arata slowly discovers more about his classmates, participating in new experiences and involving himself in romances. The chance to do-over life is something one dreams of when moments have passed, and regret lingers. We believe this slice of life anime is inspirational, showing that correcting life’s prior wrongs is never too late.

Rei Kiriyama is a young student who reached a professional ranking in the competitive world of shogi. With this prestige, he faces an enormous amount of pressure from his family and the shogi circuit. Longing for escape, Rei moves into an apartment in Tokyo, although his personal and social habits have been nonexistent. However, shortly after arriving, Rei meets Akari, Hinata, and Momo Kawamoto, sisters who live with their grandfather who owns a traditional wagashi shop. The sisters are determined to help Rei seek friendships and maintain better personal habits. Sharing a unique familial bond, this group of friends helps each other in ways that support and lift one another up in the most critical time of their lives.

Spotlighting the game of shogi, 3-gatsu no Lion provides viewers with more than just this strategic game, but on the complexities and natural qualities of life. The characters bring the story to life, as they are likable and relatable. Guiding us on an emotional roller coaster, 3-gatsu no Lion is a fantastic slice of life anime presenting to us unusual and unexpected opportunities, helping us grow when we welcome it with open arms.

Slice-of-life anime being such a popular genre, is one of the first things that comes to mind when thinking of top 10s, which is why we’ve gone ahead and taken the opportunity to do a second one. We’ve rewritten it, better than it was before. Better, stronger, fast- okay no, but we have updated it with some of the best and latest slice-of-life shows!

This isn’t just a top 10 slice of life anime list, but a look at some classics you need to watch, and some more recent releases you can’t miss. So read on below fellow slice-of-life lovers, for a look at the hilarious and heart-warming gems of the genre.

You need no longer wonder what it’s like to work at one of Akihabara’s many anime stores, because Denki-gai no Honya-san here to help give you some insight. Follow the employees of the Umanohone book store as they work midnight releases, try to reach manga competition deadlines, and recommend customers excellent hentai.

One of the most stand out things about Denki-gai no Honya-san is it’s round, bouncy art style, which really reflects the silly attitude that the series takes. This pairs well with the super otaku setting, leading to an over all not-very-serious but very amusing series. Although it’s not peppered with in-jokes or references, the setting and characters are definitely something any anime fan can relate to. Despite having no romance in the series, there are a few pairs worth shipping as well, which gives the plot a little bit more substance to keep things interesting. Denki-gai no Honya-san is great if you’re into whacky characters, and want a show that leaves the often used school setting behind.

Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge is pretty much exactly what it says in the title: a story about a very listless high school boy. Thanks to his good friend Ohta acting as a human taxi, Tanaka is able to spend much of his school life sleeping, and finding ways to be the very best at doing the very least. His sleep filled days have also somehow managed to acquire him an unusual following of weird and wonderful friends, who like Tanaka himself, spend their days dealing with regular old high school problems.

Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge is a dangerously laid back show, the kind of thing you watch before bed to chill out. A majority of the humour is not ridiculous puns or in your face noise, but revolves around the excellent character interactions, which always have a nice, natural feel. Even the simple art style suits the character of the show, and certainly has a way of making Tanaka look like the most tired anime protagonist that has ever existed. A great show to watch when you’re tired or stressed out, Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge will make you feel as relaxed as Tanaka himself.

Umaru Doma is the perfect high school princess, adored by all and second to none. At least until she gets home. Then she becomes the lazy, whiney, good-for-nothing otaku that she really is, bugging her brother for every little thing. But keeping up two personalities is surprisingly hard, especially when your best friend lives just downstairs. Watch as Umaru attempts to live her otaku life, without being thwarted by her friends or her big brother.

The show’s concept and characters are both pretty crazy here. Not only is Umaru herself a riot, spending most of her time in an adorable chibi form, but her friends also manage to be whacky in some regard: be it obsessive rivalry, or a strange shy, but yandere personality. Himouto! Umaru-chan is definitely one for those who like silly and whacky humour, and of course cute girls. One thing the show does exceptionally well is balance Umaru’s character somewhere between «isn’t she adorable, I want one as a pet», and «chibis are pretty small, I wonder how far I can kick her». It actually does wonders for keeping her and her brother’s relationship interesting, and makes her daily switch to high school princess even more bizarre. Himouto! Umaru-chan is one we’d recommend to those who want something both ridiculous and cute to watch.

Lucky Star follows the lives of regular high school girls Konata, Kagami, Tsukasa, and Miyuki. As you can imagine though there’s a bit more to it than that, with Konata’s otaku lifestyle, Miyuki’s ditzy antics, and Kagami and Tsukasa being the twins who could be no more different from one another. Along with a host of other barmy characters, look forward to hellish trips to Comiket, exam cramming, and surprisingly well choreographed cheerleading.

Famous for it’s popularity amongst otaku, Lucky Star is filled with gags and references that that any dedicated anime fan should love, as well as of course your standard slice-of-life silly conversations and events. There’s a charming simplicity to the art, with bright colours and moe character designs that make the show easy and pleasant to watch, as well as enjoyable if you’re after cute girls. A majority of Lucky Stars comedy and character interactions work so well because of how relatable the characters and situations manage to be, which is impressive considering the style and setting of the show. Lucky Star is one of those anime classics that even those who aren’t fans of slice-of-life shows can enjoy.

At the age of 15, Makoto Kowata is now considered an adult in the witching world, and so is expected to become more independant. But still wanting to finish high school, she has left her home in the city of Yokohama behind, and moved to live with relatives in the countryside of Aomori, to get the best of both worlds. Now settled in, she begins her new life, training to be a full fledged witch, with her family and supernatural friends.

Flying Witch’s main draw is how it takes supernatural scenarios and unusual characters, and manages to make them seem so normal, with most occurrences not even phasing the human members of the cast. The show gives you no real chance, nor reason, to question why everyone is so chill with the Harbringer of Spring dropping by to say hi, you just kind of go with it. And that’s the key to the show’s success, that everything just flows so nicely from story to story, without you ever worrying what’s going to happen or where it’s going. Flying Witch is another one for the ultra-relaxing shows pile: would highly recommend watching with warm milk.

Another city dweller, now moved to the outback that is the Japanese countryside, Hotaru Ichijou is the new fifth grader at Asahigaoka Branch School, a school with a grand total of five students. With very little to do in the countryside village, Hotaru along with her new friends, Komari, Natsumi, and Renge, spend their days finding fun stuff to do and interesting places to go.

The odd combination of characters in Non Non Biyori is one of the highlights for us, with several kids of different ages, as well as some very lazy adults, getting along like one big happy family. It really gives the area that they live in a sense of community, and a great deal of warmth to the show, making it the kind of place where you really wish you could spend some time relaxing. The art is another one of the centrepieces of Non Non Biyori, and although the characters may look simple, the backgrounds offer some truly stunning scenes of the lush, green land that they live in. Non Non Biyori really leaves the city life behind and provides a slice-of-life experience which although very different, is still very enjoyable.

After the unfortunate passing of his grandfather, 30 year old bachelor Daikichi Kawachi was surprised to find a young girl attending the old man’s funeral. After discovering that the girl, Rin, is infact his grandfather’s illegitimate daughter, and that no one else in the family is willing to take the poor girl in, he volunteers to look after the girl himself. Usagi Drop follows the two of them as Daikichi discovers what it takes to be a father.

Usagi Drop takes on a much deeper story than many other slice-of-life shows would: the trials and tribulations of a new family getting used to living with each other. But it does this whilst maintaining a feel good, slice-of-life atmosphere, rather than taking a more dramatic turn. The character development is truly satisfying to watch, with both of the main characters, the whole cast in fact, being both incredibly warm and believable. Usagi Drop is perfect for times when you want something warm to watch, that still has a lot of substance.

Takashi Natsume has the rare gift of being able to see ayakashi, much like his deceased grandmother. Now in possession of the «Book of Friends», a book containing the names of ayakashi his grandmother brought under her control, he is often the target of their attacks. To put a stop to these disturbances, he has decided to return the names with the book to their respective owners, all the while assisted by his cat shaped «bodyguard» Madara.

This is probably the strangest show on the list, with the unusual ayakashi featuring in every episode. The encounters with them range from the very trivial, to being quite over the top and even dangerous. Not only does the series tell the fascinating tales of the desires and lives of youkai, but also explores the bonds between humans, and more day to day situations. With four seasons out and a fifth on the way, there are plenty of stories in the Natsume Yuujinchou series, and plenty of time for the characters to develop properly. Being one of the longer running slice-of-life series, Natsume Yuujinchou is a great choice if you want to spend some time getting to really know some new characters and a new world.

Quite literally the daily lives of high school boys, Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou revolves around the lives of Hidenori, Tadakuni, and Yoshitake, who do totally normal high school boy stuff (it may or may not be totally normal high school boy stuff). There’s little more to say than that really, so look forward to disappointed little sisters, boys in skirts, and nipple shaving.

Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou is one of the most laugh-out-loud funny series we’ve watched, with the guys out of control antics being a source of constant hilarity. A big part of this is thanks to the magnificent voice acting, perfect comic timing, and well written character interactions. The last point is very important, because this is clearly a very well written series, frequently parodying anime tropes and making fun of itself. If you want something that will make you laugh not matter what kind of day you’ve had, we’d highly recommend Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou.

The Goto Islands are the perfect place for an arrogant city boy to learn a bit of respect, and get some serious work done. So after young and skilled calligrapher Seishuu Handa flips out after getting criticised by a veteran of the art, it’s the perfect place for his dad to send him. But whilst Handa is hoping to get spend his time improving his calligraphy and finding his own style, the quirky residences of the island have other plans. Well not really plans, they’re just quirky by default.

One thing that’s really different about Barakamon is the range of characters it has. From old men, to very energetic young kids, Handa has to deal with everyone in his new setting, and being a city-boy he does have some difficulty. It’s hard to say exactly why Barakamon deserves spot number on on the list, because like many other slice-of-life shows here, it’s got some great comedy, realistic, well written characters, and some solid, well paced storytelling. The thing with Barakamon is simply that it balances all these things superbly, to create the perfect slice-of-life viewing experience. You won’t see much plot development, and you might not learn much about calligraphy, but Barakamon is one of the highest quality, recent slice-of-life shows around.

Final Thoughts

There are a good deal of classic slice-of-life series about that didn’t come up here: K-On!, Nichijou, and Sakamichi no Apollon to give just a few examples. But whilst they’re all excellent shows, if every list just had the same series on it, some of the more recent anime would never get the exposure they deserve. Will the likes of Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge and Non Non Biyori stand the test of time? Who knows. But they’re definitely worth giving a chance.
