Restricted to an abandoned mansion on the outskirts of London in fulfillment of a promise to her father, lonely Cardia lives day to day isolated from the world. Her body carries a deadly poison that rots or melts anything her skin touches, prompting the locals to call her a “monster.”

Her last conversation with her father two years ago, telling her to stay out of sight and never fall in love, is the furthest back she can remember. One day, her quiet solitude is interrupted as the Royal Guards break in to capture her. It is then that Cardia meets Arsène Lupin, a chivalrous thief, who helps her escape the soldiers’ clutches. She soon finds herself on a journey with Lupin to locate her father, who holds the answers to her mysterious condition. The two are soon joined by four more interesting and handsome gentlemen…

The year is 1853 and the Royal Guard is on a mission to catch a monster. They have found the unkept mansion and there they find a girl. A girl with poisonous skin and blood. Without any resistance Cardia is captured and to some extent she is relieved as she thinks that she might be killed. She has spent the past two years alone after all. She needs to be alone to avoid hurting anyone. But the girl, who is not supposed to know love, is taken away from the Royal Guard by the Dashing Gentleman Thief and her story of love is beginning.

Normal End
After Finis’ death, Twilight is still moving and it turns out Queen Victoria herself is controlling them. The queen lets Cardia and Victor, who infiltrated the palace, that Cardia will turn into a monster in 30 hours. But as they flee from there, Cardia collapses and wakes as there is only 9 hours left. An explosion with Zicterium forces them to flee and then Twilight gets their hands on Cardia, forcing Victor to find the Zicterium for them, which is also the substance that, as he just has realised, will save Cardia. Cardia flees, but in the end they just played the game the enemy wanted and with less than an hour left before she awakens to a be death itself, Victor and Cardia tries their best to save Cardia herself, London, Britain and the world.

They manage to save London, and with that Britain and the world. But Cardia, so close to her transformation when she will kill Victor through her own poison and lose her will, decide to take her own life. It breaks Victor’s heart, but eventually, he needs to stop mourning the girl who sacrificed herself for him.

Bad End 1
When Queen Victoria offers an option for Cardia to save Victor who wants to save Cardia, Cardia decides to take the queen’s offer despite Victor’s protests. Cardia doesn’t want to ruin the life Victor has, like she had done in the past and she wishes that Victor is happy.

Bad End 2
After the terrorist attack on the poor part of London, Victor tells Cardia to run and she does as he tells her. Ignoring how she’s feeling, she runs as fast she can, away from the Zicterium gas. With 7 hours left until she awakens, Aleister finds her to escort her to Queen Victoria. As she has no strength left to resist, Cardia requests that the government sees that no one is hurt when she turns into a monster, to make sure Victor stays alive. Aleister promises that her powers will be used for peace.

Bad End 3
Cardia has been taken hostage and Victor has to give the government the Zicterium to get her back. But no one comes for Cardia and she turns into a monster.

True End
Cardia and Victor manage to save London and Victor also manages to extract Zicterium for Cardia to drink and she survives without changing into a monster. Some time later the two are living in the mansion that Saint-Germain forced upon them and Victor has found a neutralizer for the poison in her body.

Impey Barbicane (CV: Shoutarou Morikubo) is an engineer who wants to go to the moon and who is working with Lupin from some reason or other. He’s a total ladies’ man and tries to hit on Cardia, but that just kind of flies over her head because she doesn’t understand it. He’s superhuman in physical abilities but is also a very caring person and when they found a hurt dog, he cared for it to health again and named the male dog Sisi after some queen. He is a really good engineer (but the others won’t admit it around him due to his… stupidity). Although stupid, he IS reliable when you really need him.

Normal End
At the research facility they found a paper with Nemo’s name and photograph and after Finis’ death Impey and Cardia leaves to find Nemo, which they find. It turns out Nemo has had something stolen from him and Cardia and Impey decides to steal it back for him. Nemo offers them to stay at his home, but it turns out Nemo’s they enemy and he captures them to get the Philosopher’s Stone which the Horologium will transform into. But Cardia manages to escape and saves Impey. Cardia is, however, ill because Nemo could a piece and it could kill her if they don’t do something quickly. But Nemo is on their tracks and threatens entire London to get Cardia. Not running away from the danger Cardia and the rest cooperates with the government to stop Nemo. Impey manages to take the missing Horologium piece back and Cardia’s life is saved.

The battleship is set to self-destruct and Cardia is set to look for an escape pod while Impey stand behind in the control room to try steer the big ass air fortress away from Buckingham Palace to minimize the damage. He knows he has no chance of surviving, but hopes Cardia will.

A year later Cardia is going on off a journey to America because she found a sponsor for a large-scale experiment to reach the moon. And, of course, Impey’s missing.

Bad End 1
While trying to save Impey at the Nautilus, Cardia ends up having to fight and it leads to her defeat.

Bad End 2
While advancing at the Nautilus, the airship is hit. The engine is damaged and they can’t go on. Cardia dies while looking at the moon with Impey.

True End
The battleship is set to self-destruct, but Cardia refuses to leave Impey’s side. Impey manages to make an emergency landing in the Thames and they both survive. A year later they still live at the mansion, while everyone else has moved out, except for Sisi. Impey proposes to his beloved Cardia as an experiment was successful and despite not being free from poison and the fact she’s not a real human, she has no problem saying yes.

Abraham van Helsing (CV: Junichi Suwabe) is called the Human Weapon as he was a fighter in the Vampire War and he also apparently killed the king of the vampires, Delacroix. While the past is hunting him, he is hunting down a “certain man”, Finis, that’s supposedly immortal and van Helsing was trying to get Cardia for that reason. However, because of circumstances, he joins Lupin gang as well, cooperating to reach his goal with Cardia and the other’s help, while he gives them a hand when need be.

Normal End
After Finish death, Cardia decides to go back to Wales, but gets caught by Jack the Ripper. Cardia manages to untie herself while Jack isn’t around, but Jack is approaching. The girl runs for her life, and is saved by van Helsing. From this incident they learn that London will be filled with evil if Cardia isn’t handed over and investigating Azoth, the person behind Jack’s capture of Cardia, becomes a priority. Then investigation leads them to hunt one of Delacroix II’s subjects, and the battle almost kills van Helsing. The investigation continues and the further they get, the more it would seem Finis is the mastermind behind it. While trying to save the last of Finis’ political enemies, they end up seeing Finis, and naturally, van Helsing chases the boy. He’s gone for a while, then comes to say his last farewells to Cardia, but Cardia can’t accept it and together with Lupin and the rest they chase van Helsing to the hideout of Twilight. There they learn the truth about Azoth and van Helsing’s past. He chases Azoth to get his revenge and Cardia chases him, unable to leave the man alone. Azoth plan was to make van Helsing a kindred spirit and van Helsing loses is senses.

Azoth dies with a last command: Kill Cardia; and unable to disobey, this is what van Helsing sets out to do. Cardia is ready to die if that’s what going to save van Helsing. But before he kills her, he regain his senses and stabs himself. He draws his last breath after saying Cardia is the person he loves. A month later Cardia and Delacroix II live together at the mansion and Delacroix II tells Cardia he won’t leave her.

Bad End 1
After being caught by Jack the Ripper, Cardia tries to resist to save herself. But it results in him feeling she’s unworthy the person who helped him and asked for her, and he decides to torture her to death.

Bad End 2
While trying to escape Jack the Ripper she decide to melt a door, but it takes too long and Cardia is killed.

Bad End 3
While in a fight against vampires with enhanced strength, Cardia chooses to stay with Delacroix II instead of chasing van Helsing. She is stabbed in the chest by Azoth

True End
Van Helsing stabs himself after coming to his sense and Cardia grieves his death loudly. It wakes him up as he’s about to depart to and he says he can’t die now. A month later the two of them happily live together at the mansion and all the cases have been wrapped up. He promises he will make Cardia as happy as he can and show his love in all the ways he can until he knows a way to cure her from her poison.

Saint-Germain (CV: Daisuke Hirakawa) is the owner of the mansion where Lupin has his hideout and is a French count. At least currently. He is a mysterious man who seem to somewhat speak in riddles. He ended up with Lupin as he was bored and just actually happened to come across the two when they were at a bar planning and was stubborn on joining them, as he used to be very bored. Basically, he’s just in because he wants amusement.

Normal End
After Saint-Germain assassinate Finis, Cardia decides to leave, but is stopped by Saint-Germain who is heading toward the mansion. But he’s not against leaving. Instead he joins Cardia because she shouldn’t put the others in danger. Together they walk to a hideout of his, a mansion that looks just like the mansion they left, but is hidden in the forest. But at the new mansion Cardia feels the others are missing and suggest that they let the others know about this mansion. But the count won’t allow that. Cardia is drugged and taken to a room that looks like the one she had in the previous mansion. He tries to kill her, but fails, and after that she’s locked into her poison-proof room while the man is making a new batch of anaesthetics so he can kill her.

Cardia finds an opportunity to escape and gets back to the original mansion. Due to an attack, the group changes location and Cardia tells everyone what happened since she disappeared. They decide to go back to the underground facility to find clues about Idea, something Saint-Germain had once mentioned. But while there the group is suddenly attacked once again. They all manage to escape thanks to Saint-Germain, but as a result Omnibus, the leader of Idea, visits Cardia’s mind and asks for a favour. “Let yourself be killed by Saint-Germain so I don’t have to end his immortality.” The next day, at midnight she and Saint-Germain head to the meeting place. Determined to give up her life for Saint-Germain’s sake, Cardia state she was never really alive, but Saint-Germain can’t let his beloved die. He decides to rebel against Idea and now Cardia and the rest are trying to find Omnibus to change her mind about revoking Saint-Germain’s immortality. With the conditions that she together with Saint-Germain defeat Guinevere and that Cardia destroys the Horologium – Cardia’s artificial heart – Omnibus promises to save Saint-Germain. But despite Guinevere’s defeat, Saint-Germain is badly wounded and dies. As she is ready to die, Omnibus offers to make Cardia an apostle. With Saint-Germain’s wish in her mind, she accepts the offer.

Bad End 1 (or more like, Good End)
When they come to his mansion Saint-Germain asks Cardia to make a decision; either she does indeed choose to stay at this mansion, or she can go back. None of the option should be wrong. She chooses to go back. Saint-Germain however doesn’t follow her all the way. And after they part, Cardia never sees Saint-Germain again.

Bad End 2
Cardia trusts the Count won’t hurt her and doesn’t resist when he comes with a poisoned dagger to kill her. Of course, she dies as he stabs her in the chest. But as she dies she feel Saint-Germain’s tears and the last thing she see before her death is the sad eyes of the man.

Bad End 3
While trying to escape, she uses her poison on a kind of poison-proofed door. Just as she manage to melt through the lock, Saint-Germain catches her and stabs her. She dies in his arms.

Bad End 4
Cardia can’t decide what to do and what she wants and at the Tower Bridge, with tears running down his face, Saint-Germain ends the life of the one he loves.

True End
Saint-Germain wins and Cardia is ready to die and Saint-Germain has a life – limited life – given to him. But Omnibus decides to let Cardia live, thanks to Guinevere. Happily the two of them see the sun rise. Six months later, Cardia and Saint-Germain are travelling, trying to find a way for Cardia to live without the Horologium.

UNLOCKABLE ROUTE
Arséne Lupin (CV: Tomoaki Maeno) is a gentleman thief and he’s a little ridiculous and jokes a lot, but Cardia doesn’t get the jokes. He also calls himself a “thief with a heart of justice” (really, it’s “thief of justice”, but close enough, I guess?) which Cardia finds is a contradiction. He rescues Cardia from the royal guard. Or actually, he’s out to steal her heart. He believes she’s a clue to finding her father, Isaac Beckford. He also promises to make Cardia’s wish of touching him come true, as he’s going to steal her heart.

Normal End
After finding out the truth at the facility and Finis is killed, Cardia decides to leave the mansion to look for clues at the mansion in Wales where she woke up. But someone saw her and she is chased by a mob of angry villagers out to kill her to solve their own issues. Not able to stand the treatment of Cardia, Lupin saves her. Despite all, Cardia still managed to get them a clue that leads them to St. Paul’s Cathedral. They return to London, but the peaceful city they left is now under martial law and Lupin and Cardia decides to save the Queen Victoria, who is still fighting rebels at the palace. But at the palace grounds Cardia meets Finis who tells her about the plan her father has made for her. Lupin rescues her and the queen and they make plans for taking London back.

A day later, the Queen has gathered all her troops and the plan is put to start. But Cardia is kidnapped during the operation to get rid of the mastermind. But while hostage Finis finalizes the catalyst process of the Horologium and she will turn into a true monster. What Finis doesn’t know is that Cardia has the option to take her own life. She chooses not to and Lupin saves her, but after running and running, Finis gets to them and kills Lupin which means Cardia no choice to return with her brother. The Horologium’s change completes and it’s time for Isaac to take what she has been fostering with her life – her heart. But Cardia refuses to give up and is absorbed by the main body of Isaac and into his mind. There she learns what cause Isaac to turn into the man he has become – the man who would create Cardia and Finish to put the world into eternal war. She is about to fall into eternal sleep, but Lupin saves her. Lupin kills Isaac, but Finis is still alive. However, the Nautilus starts self-destructing and is falling toward the earth, and Finish falls out of a hole in wall.

Eventually the couple falls through the floor and into the sky, heading to the same fate as Finis…

Bad End 1
Cardia tries to resist against Finis, but is put to sleep so Finis can use her for his goals.

Bad End 2
To save Lupin from suffering and death, Cardia sacrifices herself by taking the pill she had received from Omnibus and saves the world and ruins her father’s plan.

Bad End 3
Cardia doesn’t want to let Isaac do what he wishes, so she decides to commit suicide. Isaac is however too fast and Cardia’s attempt fails. She is instead absorbed into his mind and falls into eternal sleep.

True End
Cardia and Lupin miraculously are saved mid-fall by Impey and the gang who saw them fall down. Six months later Cardia and Lupin get married.

Fin
Cardia refuses Lupin’s offer. She has read that thieves can’t be trusted and hence she leaves the stunned Lupin behind to search for her father alone.

Idiotic womanisers aren’t my thing, so Impey started off with lots of minus points. He got a couple of plus points for wanting to help Sisi, but lost more because of the story behind Sisi’s name. Sometimes it got a bit too much and although there were moments of seriousness in Impey, I just couldn’t take him seriously. He had a few moments where he was just smooth without ruining it, but it wasn’t enough for me to enjoy his route. I felt more like I suffered through it and I assure you it wasn’t because of my hip which, days before playing his route, partially dislocated. He just wasn’t my type and I enjoyed Cardia more than Impey. After this route I really just want to date Cardia, at least the Cardia in Impey’s route. She was strong and often was an opposite to Impey’s stupidity.

Van Helsing, or just “Van”, became one of my favourites. He was a nice run after Impey, because while Impey’s full of comical relief, this one is more serious. It still has Impey in it, but it’s not so much it’s painful to play it. This guy also has a painful past, but his painful past, unlike Victor’s, runs a little further back in time. Which, naturally, means more pain. I feel both Victor and van Helsing are very similar, but their different personalities and the varying circumstances still make their routes different enough to make them both enjoyable.

Saint-Germain’s a very pained soul and I love delicious pain. So I really enjoyed his route. Probably more so than anyone else’s. At first I was like “oh great, another Toma” when he drugged and then locked in Cardia in a room, but I didn’t keep that thought for long. However it had so much happening and somehow I feel like this route was a little longer than the previous 3? Lol, maybe it was just that I’m reaching the end. I didn’t particularly enjoy parts of Cardia. She loses some of her strength and does go into what is like… “I can change him” while chasing Saint-Germain through the majority of the route.

Kaito Kuroba changed out of his Kid outfit, put on some lenses, travelled back in time to an alternate timeline and is now posing as Lupin.

OMG IT’S LIKE I DATED KAITOU KID. YES, PLEASE, I WANT THAT TO HAPPEN. *coughs* So, Lupin obviously remind of a completely different thief who I like a lot. I kept being super excited about it, because, lol, I really love Kid. Lupin even looks similar, although they still have their differences in appearance, and honestly they are similar in personality as well. However, I’m sorry to say that this was the route I enjoyed Cardia the least. On Twitter I described her as so madly in love with that all her common sense and knowledge flew out the window, I believe. She is very strong in the other routes, but in this she is definitely more of a doormat. She still kicks down a door, for instance, but in general she just kind of is a damsel in distress the majority of the time. On top if that, this route – which is the revelation route – felt longer than any others. But on the other hand, they basically crammed in the 4 other routes into Lupin’s route to some degree, and added new information. But I’m not done! This is also the route I felt the translation failed the most. The English from time to time started to become more gibberish than English.

I did really enjoy the normal end on Lupin’s route. It was so, so, so, so sad and I started crying my eyes out.

The extra stories are pretty nice as well and you get a CG in each of them. The main point is fan service (we need to get some bare skin, right girls?) but they are pretty funny, especially Victor’s/Fran’s. I feel pretty sorry for him though.

My favourite illustrations are sadly not of the CGs you get but mostly background or “less important” things like this illustration used for when they fly the ornithopter. Generally I appreciate the amazing backgrounds more than anything in this title.

I really hate complaining on such a great game and admittedly, I wasn’t going to but you know… Aksys absolutely ruined my plans of going “Well, this wasn’t so bad, so go ahead and buy it if you want to play a great game with a decent translation.” Because decent was what I expected. Decent was not what I got. Good was not it either. Great? No. Awesome? Well, I guess “awesomely bad” would be to be a bit over the top, but it was not even decent. A decent translation has typos and maybe a few extra words and two “and” in a row or the like. A decent translation might be a bit inconsistent in its translation. Hakuoki was decent. This? In Fran’s/Victor’s route a lack of negation changed the meaning of something Victor, THE MAIN GUY IN THIS PARTICULAR ROUTE, said AT A VERY CRUCIAL POINT. It led to a very serious inconsistency in story for those who doesn’t understand Japanese. I wasn’t okay with this, but I could understand a mistake can happen and that might be it (or it was a really bad mistranslation).

Then I went on to get Impey and you know what? THEY TRANSLATED THE LINE “I’ll be BAAAAACK” that Nemo says as his airship crashes to “You haven’t seen the last of meeeeee!”. This line is spoken in English with Japanese accent (aka Engrish) but you can hear he does indeed say “I’ll be back”. So, really, what the hell was the point in translating a line already in English? If the script said something else, sure, I GET IT. But I don’t think that Nemo went off script. I. Seriously. Doubt. That. Karen, an editor at Aksys, tweeted and said it’s possible that the editor didn’t get to see the original Japanese text and didn’t know it was in English, but that just pushes the responsibility onto the translator and QA, where an audio mismatch should have been noticed. But it doesn’t change an English line was translated into something other what was spoken.

Van Helsing’s routes didn’t include much problems and although I found some typos in that as well as Saint-Germain’s, they were both alright. But Lupin’s suffered a lot and the further toward the end I got, the worse it got. In chapter 12 English grammar just started to stop working. The common route had some issues as well.

I know I’m a monster, and that I’m filled with a poison…

That way, I won’t have to endure anything that might hurt me.

Except for all above there was also times I questioned the translator’s and editor’s English knowledge. As in “This is either a really bad typo or someone needs an English lesson” at times, but also “Uh, I could probably do this better than you, thank you very much.” A sentence in particular was criticised by a friend of mine when I post a screenshot of it on Twitter. The sentence was long and, really, could have used a couple of commas to make more sense. I didn’t really spend a lot of time commenting on weird wordings or lack of commas on Twitter, but yes, there were some obvious literary flaws in this translation on a rather fundamental level, especially if we talk about them in a – what word should I use? – aesthetic meaning. Commas have a practical purpose – of course – and that’s part of grammar, but when a complicated or long sentence is read, many won’t be able to take in the entire sentence as it is. The comma offers a pause for the reader while being a way of showing that this part belongs with this part of the sentence. Too many or too few commas is dreadful in a literary piece, as this game obviously is, as it makes it harder to read. You can’t put them just wherever you like in a literary piece like this as commas still have a purpose, but it can certainly help making use of them when needed and used properly.

Names also seemed to have no importance to the translator. Names could be misspelt or just changed and how the characters addressed each other could change from one moment to the next, especially if it wasn’t one of the main guys.

It was in general just a very sad translation. Actually, to be completely honest, I doubt that anyone actually looked over this thing after it was translated. there were some so painfully obvious things that would had needed fixing that it’s clear that no one had actually taken a look at it, at least not all options or the routes after the common route. Van Helsing suffered the least, so maybe someone checked that. But that is not an acceptable job. This was not an acceptable release. And out of Norn9 and this, this was supposed to be the much better one. I dread the nightmare.

That being said, this really is a great game! Although the story is serious, it’s filled with jokes and funny moments. You can read it as it is, a story. But you can also dwell into the deep, philosophical thoughts this game provokes. Who am I? Why was I born? What is my purpose? What is a soul? What is free will? What is emotion? What is the correct path to walk down through life? What is being human? What is being alive? What is right and what is wrong? I might replay the game at a later date and just analyse it because there’s so much beneath the surface and I’m not particularly fond of the idea of writing an essay on the deeper meanings of this game in this, already plenty long post.

The game is divided into a common route (chapters 1-8) and the then route of the guy (chapters 9-13) and although you have time get to know the guy in the first 8 chapters, I do feel that the romance is a little crammed in into some of the guys’ route. Like, a serious moment where they basically reason why to fight, then a romantic scene followed by the fight for life. Or the romantic moments when you’re surrounded by enemies and everyone is just standing around while you basically confess. But it’s definitely not missing in romance, lol.

I like how none of the choices are random, really. Cardia always has reasoning behind her actions and you can understand why they happen. Also you don’t have to get all the choices “right” to get the true end. Nothing in life is so straightforward getting all right means you get the best possible outcome and I feel like this is a very realistic approach, as we have choices to make in this game. Some of them are fatal, some might not really affect the outcome too much. The characters are also well-made and the enemies have reasons to what they do and aren’t just purely evil.

I also appreciate that they actually speak Cardia’s name if you choose not to call her something else. It took a while though before it happened and Impey was the first one to say her name, lol. Also, one of the features in this game is that you can mute characters you don’t like the voice of (or for some other reason don’t want to hear), which was a feature I missed in Barkuoki because I really dislike MikiShin. I had to either mute them all (and I didn’t want to do that) or force myself to listen to MikiShin. I chose the latter. In this otome game you don’t have to choose. You can both mute individual voices and all of them, so it’s all up to you!

By mixing good story, serious topics and thoughts with comedy and light-hearted moments, Code: Realize generally has a nice mixed pace and never gets too dark nor too light. The “not too dark” is mostly thanks to Impey being a comic relief.

The art is well-done overall, but I prefer background and illustrations of the ornithopter or even the steam train more than the CGs that don’t live up to the quality of the sometimes absolutely amazing backgrounds. But the art isn’t bad though and some might prefer the CGs and sprites over the backgrounds of Steam London. It’s obviously a matter of personal taste. I need to point out some CGs look a bit off though. The soundtrack is good as well and it’s doing a great job of setting the mood as it should. You will know when a funny moment is happening and when it’s ending and I honestly would hum some of the tracks. I’m not too fond of the opening, but really enjoyed the ending theme.

I definitely recommend this game, definitely more so if you play the original Japanese one, because it’s a really good game with good story, well-written characters. Even the enemies get to shine in this game and you learn the reasoning behind the actions, which make them very human and that is something I appreciate in any story. As for Cardia herself, she’s not exactly a doormat heroine, which I have pointed out earlier as well. She saves the day just as much as any of the guys and although she starts out without some knowledge and much of a personality, it develops through the game. However, I don’t support Aksys releasing a bad translation, so you should only get this if you can bear inconsistencies, mistranslations and other things that aren’t typos. If you know Japanese well and is as particular about how the spoken lines are and how the “subtitles” become, you should also stay away. Far away. In fact, really, I think everyone should stay far away from this translation.

BUT, if you despite all are ready to play this in English, it’s worth mentioning that if you don’t like Hakuoki because it’s slow and history heavy, this steampunk themed game might be better for you. There is certainly more lovey-dovey times in the game although the lengths of the games are approximately the same, and even though it’s set in 19th century Great Britain most of the alternate history is explained in the glossary, rather than in game, leaving more space for action, love and some painful pasts. (lol)

Finally, this is really just a sidenote with trivia, but the a fair share of the characters are based on fictional character, although I’m not saying they are entirely true to their original characters. Lupin is originally from a novel series by Maurice Leblanc, Victor is the main character in Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein, Impey is from From the Earth to the Moon by Jules Verne and van Helsing is from Dracula by Bram Stoker. As for Saint-Germain… Well, there is a fictional Count Saint-Germain in a series of novels, by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, based on a real person, so you can do the math, can’t you?

I remember playing this game initially when it was released and localised in 2015 by Aksys Games into English. Recently, I decided to replay the game out of nostalgia (I haven’t touched the game since clocking it two years ago) and I might as well write a review on one of my all-time favourite otome games, am I right? I purchased a PSVita initially to play Amnesia: Memories that was released a month prior and to my surprise and delight, this title was released soon after; giving yet another purpose to playing the Vita.

What initially caught my attention was the gorgeous art, impressive sneak peek soundtracks, strong voice cast line up and character design. Not to mention I am a sucker for historical-based Visual Novels, since it gives a more three-dimensional take on the storyline and feels more authentic to read as a reader. It’s always interesting to see how writers use real life events to further fuel their own writing.

Needless to say, I felt this was undoubtedly the best otome game released in english for 2015. At the price of $29.99 USD, it is well worth the purchase and I highly recommend to all otome game lovers to give it a go.

Storyline ★★★★★

Restricted to an abandoned mansion on the outskirts of London in fulfillment of a promise to her father, lonely Cardia lives day to day isolated from the world. Her body carries a deadly poison that rots or melts anything her skin touches, prompting the locals to call her a “monster.” Her last conversation with her father two years ago, telling her to stay out of sight and never fall in love, is the furthest back she can remember. One day, her quiet solitude is interrupted as the Royal Guards break in to capture her. It is then that Cardia meets Arsène Lupin, a chivalrous thief, who helps her escape the soldiers’ clutches. She soon finds herself on a journey with Lupin to locate her father, who holds the answers to her mysterious condition. The two are soon joined by four more interesting and handsome gentlemen…

The story is based in 19th Century London, Britain during the technological age of revolution. It heavily uses the genre of steampunk, and many of the characters are based on famous historical figures or fiction of the era. Isaac Beckford, the protagonist’s father is considered the equivalent of a “modern prometheus”, and the main forerunner behind Britain’s staggering technological advancement for its time and fortified defence famously known as Steel London.

However, he has since disappeared without a trace in the peak of his career and brilliance; to the shock of the world. It is the search for his whereabouts that joins all the characters by fate in meeting one another, and becoming a team in order to further their own personal goals. Cardia (the protagonist) decides to accompany them on a journey of self-discovery, seeking the answers to her own past, origin and cure for her condition to fulfil her desire to touch another human being.

The story premise immediately draws the reader in, with its interesting concept and twist on real world history. It is executed excellently, with good story pacing and every route is wrapped up nicely. The reader isn’t left dissatisfied or with questions unanswered, and the routes go into incredible detail about the character’s struggles, past, origin, and reason for searching for Isaac Beckford. One of the greatest points about Code: Realize is that none of the routes felt lacking in content and depth. Usually many Visual Novels struggle with consistency, and it is obvious in the writing that some routes are written better than others. This was not the case for this game.

Every storyline route played a crucial factor in the overarching plot, each connecting to one another beautifully in the grand scheme of painting the picture for the story. Every route essentially was a different perspective and piece of the overall plot, and when placed altogether forms the complete storyline. When the dots all lined up in the end, I was left with a feeling of awe and satisfaction at how well planned out the whole storyline was.

The writing and translation was rather impressive and accurate, with very little grammatical errors throughout. I probably only found a handful of typos during the course of the game that are easily overlooked, although could have been spotted with more thorough proofreading. The game is of medium length, and would take approximately 30-50hrs to complete. The common route spans from Chapter 1-8 of the game, and takes around 5-6 hrs to finish. From Chapter 9-13 is the character route of the chosen bachelor that you selected, which takes around 5-10 hrs to finish depending on your read speed.

The game covers a lot of content, and is very text heavy. If you’re not a fan of content-heavy games with slow developing storylines, this game can feel like a hefty read and a struggle to finish. It is also an otome game so the romance aspect does play a significant part of the plot. Otherwise, there is very little I can fault about the story writing itself. I thoroughly enjoyed reading and playing the game, and it definitely left a strong impression on me.

Character Development ★★★★

WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD! READ AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION!

One of the strongest points of the game is the writing for the heroine herself, Cardia Beckford. Playing as Cardia was an incredibly refreshing and rewarding experience, as she develops fantastically as a character over the course of the game. She begins as a doll-like girl with no will to live, unwilling to change and without a single desire or purpose other than to wait for the return of her father. Throughout her journey with the bachelors, she transforms into someone who deeply cares for her friends and others around her and does not hesitate to protect what she holds dear.

She shows the capacity for human thoughts and emotions, and a moral compass that distinguishes her from being a “monster”. Cardia constantly tries her best not to hold her friends back, and excels in the skills that they’ve taught her such as Lupin’s escape tactics, Van Helsing’s combat lessons and techniques, and Viktor’s use and understanding of chemical properties. Unlike many otome game heroines who fulfil the damsel-in-distress role, Cardia has shown time and time again that she can very well hold her own ground in a fair fight – even against the elite soldiers, Twilight.

She has escaped and overcome many situations that would’ve been deemed hopeless, through sheer willpower and wit. It is also understandable as to how she ends up falling for each of the bachelors, and doesn’t fall for them initially at first sight. There is actual build up and development with every character, as she slowly opens her heart to them about her deepest fears and past.

The game requires all 4 bachelor routes to be completed (Van Helsing, Saint-Germain, Viktor Frankenstein and Impey Barbicane), before it unlocks Lupin’s Route (The True Ending). I personally recommend playing them in the above order, due to the later routes revealing more information about the true ending. However, it’s not extremely important to play in that specific order and you can easily choose whomever you would like to play first.

ABRAHAM VAN HELSING: Van Helsing is the infamous Vampire Hunter, who eradicated the vampires and their king during the Vampire War. He initially opens fire on the group when they are attending a fair, and demands that Cardia accompany him as she may be the key to finding the man he must kill. Van Helsing reluctantly joins the group after seeing their display of skill, and that their goals all essentially aline to one man – Isaac Beckford.

He is cold, callous, and remains distant from the rest of the group; having only a single-minded focus on killing Finis, the source of his life’s despair and misery. Van Helsing is willing to throw away everything, so long as his role as an avenger comes to an end – and agrees to die at the hands of Delacroix II to atone for his sins.

I thoroughly enjoyed Van Helsing’s route, as it was very emotionally vexing and well written. Seeing the transition from a cold-blooded killer into a man conflicted by his sense of duty and the foreign emotions of love truly played on my heartstrings. The pivotal moment when he confesses his longing for the heroine, and his frustrations at her recklessness precisely because he loves her was so wonderfully written. His voice actor (諏訪部 順一 Suwabe Junichi) did a fantastic job at conveying his pain, despair and love – the raw emotion was evident in every word punctuated.

I felt that he had significant character development throughout the story, and great dynamic with Cardia. Every moment between the two was electrifying, as Cardia consistently displays the fruits of his efforts in her admirable combat skills.

I felt their mutual respect and trust with one another’s lives formed the crux of their relationship; and how it inevitably led to them falling in love. The twist of his route was all too heart-wrenching, and completely justified his inner torment and turmoil. I loved the pacing, development and his good ending CG with Cardia was just all too cute.

SAINT-GERMAIN: The most mysterious out of all the characters, not much is known about the whimsical Count other than his immense generosity with allowing the cast to stay at his mansion and entertaining their grand schemes in searching for Isaac Beckford. Originating in France, Saint-Germain is always calm, well-mannered and eloquent — the picture perfect definition of a gentleman.

In spite of his distaste for violence, all the characters have expressed that he is a force to be reckoned with and encompasses immense skill in combat; demonstrating on multiple occasions that he even exceeds Van Helsing in strength. Saint-Germain in my opinion had by far the best storyline out of all the bachelors in the sheer complexity of the plot and how well the pieces all came together in the end.

I don’t think any reader would have anticipated that Saint-Germain is in fact hundreds of years old, and an Apostle of Idea – The Guides of History throughout all of mankind. It just all suddenly clicked as to how they were able to evade detection for so long in the Count’s mansion, his combat skill through centuries of honing, immense world knowledge and how all the characters capable of altering history came to meet at his intervention behind the scenes.

I really liked the concept of the Apostles due to the strong religious allusions and historical references used to strengthen the storyline itself. It addresses yet another dimension of Cardia’s character and existence; the morality of mankind obtaining infinite power and trespassing on the realm of God in the creation of a human being.

Power given to human hands throughout history has inevitably led to death and destruction, a path that bars mankind from returning to Eternal Paradise (The Garden of Eden) – a goal that Omnibus (Eve), the Leader of the Apostles has dedicated her whole life to. Through consuming the forbidden fruit, Omnibus has the power to predict human disaster, and steer mankind onto the path of salvation. Cardia’s very own existence as a result, is undoubtedly considered sin in God’s eyes – a poor imitation at creating a human being, a doll unable to touch or love another person without planting the seeds of despair.

And yet, this very imitation has shown the capacity to love and care for another, not hesitating to place her life on the line to save someone else. She laughs, cries and smiles just like any other human being – so where is the line that distinguishes man from beast?It is no wonder that Saint-Germain becomes immensely conflicted in his judgement, as he is unable to come to a decision regarding her existence. For the first time in a millennia, his cold heart has been thawed and moved by a girl; fighting against fate in her search for meaning.

As a warning, his route is significantly darker than the other bachelors and can be considered disturbing to many. He displays ‘yandere-like’ tendencies such as kidnapping the heroine, attempting to strangle her, and she does die at his hands brutally in several of the bad ends. It is understandable however as his role in history does not allow him to disobey orders. The only order he disobeyed led to an incredibly traumatic past that wiped out a large portion of humanity, leaving his hands permanently bloodstained. Cardia continuing to live would bring about a calamity far greater than any in the past that humankind has committed.

The raw undiluted passion that the Count showed when single-handedly going against the 12 Apostles, and begging Omnibus to spare Cardia’s life touched me. It was completely unlike his character, and truly demonstrated how much he loved her and how important her existence was to him. Saint-Germain’s route is crucial to Cardia, since it further develops her as a character and addresses her existentialist existence. I was a little disappointed at his ending, since I felt that the happiness gifted to them could only be temporary and didn’t truly resolve Cardia’s underlying problems.

VIKTOR FRANKENSTEIN: A famous alchemist in London and part of the prestigious Royal Alchemist Society, well-respected and renowned for his scientific discoveries. Cardia encounters Viktor when he assists her escape from some thugs on her first day in London, and offers the group his cooperation for their quests regarding Isaac Beckford in return for safety from the government.

He has been branded a wanted criminal and terrorist for treason, although it is unknown to the group the true nature of these accusations. Always kind-hearted, soft-spoken and gentle, he primarily serves as the group’s medic and makes up for his physical shortcomings through his use and knowledge of chemically-filled test tubes for both offence and defence.

It was quite amusing for a time of Cardia’s dilemma as Viktor potentially being her father; obviously alluding to the original tale of Frankenstein creating a monster whom he then abandoned. Initially I didn’t expect too much coming into Viktor’s route as his character isn’t usually my type, but his route was undoubtedly very sweet.

His route is refreshing in comparison to the first two, who are completely and utterly at the mercy of their past. Although he does have a traumatic past of his own, the overall mood and tone of the story is significantly more light-hearted. I particularly enjoyed his moments of shyness and consideration for Cardia that were vacant from the other two, and the fumbling of two people in love for the first time.

I enjoyed his route particularly due to his hand in creating the element ‘Zicterium’, the pre-cursor to the Philosopher’s Stone and his contribution to the heroine’s past more significant than any of us would expect. I felt he developed wonderfully as a character because it is through his meeting and interactions with the heroine that he is finally able to confront the demons of his past, and look forward to creating a better future. It is Cardia’s courage and headstrong personality that enables Viktor the strength and determination to atone for his actions.

What I also liked was it explored Queen Victoria’s character and her past, giving greater insight into a very interesting character in her own right. Viktor’s route paints her in her darkest hour as a ruthless, tyrant-like ruler who would sacrifice a whole city of civilians for the benefit of Great Britain; essentially the ending justifying the means.

By the end of his route however, we realise that she is in fact a genuinely kind and benevolent Queen, giving up her own morality and sense of self for the sake of her people. Everything she has done has been for the benefit of her own country, no matter how many pieces of herself she would lose in the process. I felt the scene where Leonhardt for the first time in his life disobeyed the Queen’s orders in response to Viktor’s brave actions of standing up to him and refusing to employ Victoria’s tactics was a true demonstration of both the character’s development over the story.

IMPEY BARBICANE: A self-proclaimed genius engineer who partners up with Arsène Lupin from the beginning of the game to rescue Cardia from her home in Wales. The ‘comic-relief’ character out of all the bachelors, Impey is an incredibly cheerful and energetic personality; much to the ire of the others and consistently used as the butt of their jokes.

Despite their constant insults at his lack of trustworthiness and questionable morals when it comes to women, they deeply respect his abilities as both a cook and an engineer; fully relying on and trusting in his skill to get them out of tricky situations, which Impey always delivers. He is the only character who falls in love with Cardia at first sight, and expresses disappointment in all the routes when she ends up falling in love with another bachelor; although he always wishes for her happiness in the end.

I felt Impey although an enjoyable route to read, was a lot weaker than the others due to the fact that he had very little character development over the progress of the story. He is more or less the same from beginning to end, and doesn’t differ much from what we see in the other storylines; essentially what you see is what you get.

An interesting revelation about him though was his origins as a vampire, which explains his incredible strength and durability in combat. However, this was only mentioned in his route and not delved upon fully to my disappointment. I feel his origins should’ve been expanded on in more detail, and his past felt lacking in comparison to the others. His route is the most light-hearted out of the bunch, and not as heavy of a read which is a nice contrast.

His route delves into the character of Nemo, another genius mad-scientist who claims that both Viktor and Impey are his greatest rivals. This is important as Nemo is actually a significant character in the grand overarching plot, and his contributions to Twilight – the organisation seeking for the capture of Cardia. Impey by far had the best CGs in the game with the heroine, almost unfairly so in comparison to the other bachelors that I’ve noticed. Overall, I still really liked Impey as a character due to the dynamic he added to the group and the balance he brought to everyone else’s more jarring personalities.

ARSÈNE LUPIN: The true ending only unlockable upon the completion of every other route, and as a result the most controversial in terms of audience reception. A world renowned ‘gentlemen-thief’ who has stolen from the most elite-organisations whether it be money, information or top-secret documents that has never been revealed to the public eye. A modern-day Robin Hood, he steals only from the rich and gives back to the poor; a rather warped sense of self-justice that he has instilled upon himself.

Lupin is responsible for planning the heist to rescue Cardia at the beginning of the game, and pledges to her that he can steal anything in the world – including women’s hearts. He makes a promise to grant her wish of being able to touch another human being, and ridding her body of the poison that permeates it. Lupin has a strong distaste for violence as he finds the behaviour ungentlemanly, and as a result all his skills lie in the art of deception and escape.

I felt that his route although good, it didn’t truly live up to the hype and build up it had from playing all the other routes. A consistent theme is that all the bachelors mention that they aren’t right for the heroine; and choosing someone like Lupin would truly ensure her salvation and happiness. They all emphasise that Lupin is the only one who can cure her, and grant Cardia the wish that she is seeking.

As a result, the bulk of Lupin’s story is dedicated to revealing and answering all the questions hinted at in the previous routes. Although his past is touched upon as to how he became a gentleman thief and acquired his skills, it is nowhere near as impactful or in-depth as the others. I felt his reasoning for saving the heroine and life purpose was quite weak overall, and didn’t leave a lasting impression.

All of his route was essentially revolved around Cardia, her past and how to rid her of the poison without much focus on Lupin at all; despite it being his route. He doesn’t develop much as a character either, despite having such significant roles in every single other bachelor route. He is the same from beginning to end, and when a character is too perfect in every way that is also a flaw in the writing.

What I do commend is the route does wrap up the overarching story nicely, and the questions culminated throughout the plot all were answered in one grand sweep. It is the only route where Isaac Beckford finally makes his appearance, and delves into his purpose for creating the cursed children as well as his reasoning for it all.

Lupin’s route is the most romantic, and has the most ‘canon ending’ out of all the bachelors. As he is the true ending, he naturally has all the best moments in the game as a character and truly plays the ‘golden-hearted hero with an unparalleled sense of justice that rescues the princess time and time again’ role perfectly.

What I liked about his route was that out of all the characters, he had the most noble intentions towards Cardia and was truly working only for her best interests. Every other character had their own demons to take care of, and as a result could never truly solve and take upon Cardia’s burdens as well. Lupin is also the one to truly ‘save’ Cardia and grant her wish; as without his initial rescue, she would have never known the world outside her cage and experienced happiness.

One of the highlights of the game is the absolutely gorgeous art. There is very little to fault the art upon at all. It looks super vibrant and crisp on the PSVita, with a wide assortment of CGs for every character and backgrounds; as well as a bonus extra scene CG unlocked when you complete their route (a fan-service scenario/picture). If anything, I wish there would be more CGs to look at (laugh) simply because they’re so beautiful. They look like something that could come out of a painting, and there’s just so much attention and attentiveness to detail.

The proportions and body positions are also done particularly well; a struggle that many Visual Novel artists I’ve noticed have. You could choose to toggle on/off the portrait of the heroine, but I personally liked having it on due to the sprite of the heroine encompassing varying expressions depending on the scenario. I liked how the CGs were distributed evenly with every bachelor, so it didn’t feel like some had more or less than others. The quality of the images are maintained throughout the game, and consistency I find is the most crucial factor when it comes to Visual Novels.

If you want to check out other games that the artist illustrated for, Miko also did the popular Idea Factory games Beast Master and Prince (Moujuutsukai to Ouji-sama) and Bond of Ten Demons (Toki no Kizuna Sekigahara Kitan). The first is only playable in japanese, and the second has been localised in the form of a mobile game.

Music and Voice Acting ★★★★

The music in Code: Realize was very well done. It had a large assortment of tracks, and the looping was subtle but not incredibly noticeable. They all suited the mood and theme of the game perfectly, and had some of my favourite tracks out of any Visual Novel I’ve played. I particularly enjoyed the piano instrumental for the ‘romantic/emotional’ moments, since they definitely contributed to the overall gameplay experience. The voice acting cast was superb as well, with a solid and famous line up.

Every voice actor suited their character perfectly, bringing them to life with solid and lively personalities. One thing I did note upon though was for some reason out of all the voices, Lupin’s was the quietest in terms of audio despite them all being on the same volume. It took me quite a while to adjust and figure out exactly how to balance all the audios of the voices in order for them to speak at the same volume. This task proved to be more difficult than I would’ve thought, as I also had to adjust the background music and sound effects to match the voice volume.

The system user interface (UI) and graphics layout were nicely designed and suited the theme of the game. The recurring motif of ‘clock-work cogs’ are prevalent throughout the game, as a symbol of time being of the essence in curing the heroine as well as the era of technological advancement in London.

I liked the in-built encyclopaedia very much as it gave extra insight into the historical aspect of the game, backing it up with real-life factual information and explaining terms that the average player may not be familiar with. It was a nice touch how the background of the title screen alternates between day and night depending on the time you play the game.

Code: Realize has an option called ‘Path of Genesis’ unlocked when you complete your first playthrough. This allows you to select which chapter you would like to play from afterwards, and locks you into the character route you desire no matter what choices you make.

It’s a very nifty option especially for first time Visual Novel players playing without a walkthrough, as it allows you to easily get onto your desired bachelor path and experiment with the varying endings of the game. The gallery allows you to replay event CGs without replaying the game again, and the chibi sprites when selecting the extra scene were adorable.

Conclusion

Overall, Code Realize:

Guardian of Rebirth

is a very good game. With its interesting storyline, solid characters, beautiful artwork, strong voice acting line up and great execution; there is very little to fault it about. However, it employs the niche steampunk genre, slow developing storyline and is content-heavy both in text and historical referencing. As it is also an otome game, the romance plays a strong role in advancing the plot and as a result Code: Realize isn’t for everyone.

I’ve read many reviews where some readers absolutely loved the game, whereas others found themselves struggling to finish it due to how much reading was involved in comparison to actual action and gameplay. For me personally, then I loved the game and highly recommend it.

If you love in-depth storylines, beautiful artwork and otome then this is definitely the game for you. In my opinion, it is without a doubt one of the best localised otome games out there and worth purchasing a Vita for; especially as majority of Visual Novel releases are on the platform.

My main qualm about the game was Lupin’s Route. Despite him being my favourite character and thoroughly enjoying the route itself; there were definitely glaring faults about it. As his path is the ‘true ending’ of the game, it essentially resolves all the problems that arose in the previous storylines and answers any remaining questions the player has.

This is great in the sense that we have a ‘wholesome ending’ that doesn’t feel lacking in those respects. However, it leaves a bad taste for readers where Lupin isn’t their favourite character. Because his route is so ‘perfect’ and resolves every problem; it really does render every other character’s path obsolete.

Despite their significant contribution to the overall plot line, the writers intentionally made it so none of them could fully save Cardia – because only Lupin could have that role as the true character you’re meant to end up with. They purposefully made holes in the other character’s routes, only so Lupin could solve it all in the end. If everyone’s problems could be solved in Lupin’s ending anyways, what was the real point of their routes?

Everyone more or less ends up in the same place as their ending with Cardia in Lupin’s Route, so regardless of whether or not Cardia chooses to end up with them; nothing essentially changes. In every story route ending, Cardia’s poison is still a work-in-progress and their life together although happy; isn’t fully resolved. In Lupin’s Route, everyone gets a happy complete ending.

The whole plot revolves around the concept that you need to choose Lupin, you need him in order to find the answers and wish you seek, driving the audience into a corner where you’re essentially forced to like Lupin the most; because he gives you the best ending. As a result, Lupin essentially emulates your perfect prince; noble, courageous and with a heart of justice — only working towards your sake and happiness. He doesn’t change or deviate much from this role or personality, with very little character development overall. Honestly, all the other bachelors were more multi-faceted and had greater dimensions to their character.

I was expecting Lupin to have a dark side to him, or something that changed him so dramatically to become the person he is now. I was convinced at one point that he had been an ex-Twilight member, which would explain his stealth skills and escape tactics reminiscent of the elite organisation. It would’ve been such a great angle and made an even better storyline if executed correctly, so you can imagine my disappointment when that wasn’t the case at all.

I mean, how dramatic would it have been upon realising that the organisation after Cardia’s life and her saviour were both one in the same? That this whole entire time rather than saving her out of good will, it was all part of Finis’ master plan to gain her trust? That is just one example of how many possibilities Lupin’s route could’ve had to go from good to great or amazing.

Overall, Idea Factory did an amazing job with the game and Aksys Games really did choose a solid title to localise. Code: Realize

Guardian of Rebirth

has undoubtedly been a commercial success, as it’s fan disk sequel Code: Realize

has been announced for localisation and TBA release date in 2017.

I believe the fan disk Idea Factory usually releases isn’t as content heavy as the original games, as they’re ‘after-story’ events to appease readers with more romantic stories with their favourite bachelor. I will definitely be reviewing it and playing it myself when the game releases! Look forward to when that review comes out and fingers crossed it won’t be pushed to 2018!

Lupin’s route is the only one that’s locked at the start of the game. There’s no real risk of reading spoilers by picking your favourite character first as the initial four routes are quite standalone. Lupin’s route ties everything together and unlocks after you complete the other four.

My recommended play order is as follows:

Impey → Van Helsing → Fran → Saint-Germain → Lupin

After your first playthrough, you can start a different route via the Path of Genesis and select whose route you would like to start from Chapter 8. However, doing this will make you miss some Glossary entries (if I remember correctly, Impey’s route is the only exception to this).

Who’s that handsome guy under the hat?

The story centers around Cardia, who lives isolated from society in an abandoned mansion on the outskirts of London due to a promise that she made with her father, Isaac Beckford. Because her body carries a deadly poison that causes everything she touches to melt or rot away, people who know of her existence call her a “monster.” Dealing with the harsh treatment from people, and having her beloved father’s command to stay out of sight and never fall in love, she feels compelled to obey her father and live alone until he finally comes back for her. But one day, her life of silence is disrupted when the Royal Guards break into the mansion under the orders to capture her. Intercepting that capture is Arsène Lupin, a chivalrous thief who helps her escape. Cardia soon finds herself on a journey to find answers with Lupin several other people who are all tied to her father’s research. Will Cardia find a cure for her poison and find out what’s keeping her father from coming back to her?

Code: Realize is a really unique otome game due various factors. The steampunk-ish setting filled with 19th century industrial steam-powered machines is pretty refreshing. I’m not that familiar with steampunk, but I can really get behind the gorgeous Gothic-Victorian dresses! 👗 Steampunk motifs aside, this game has literary and historical figures, some which you can romance! Go on an adventure with Arsène Lupin, Abraham Van Helsing, Victor Frankenstein, Impey Barbicane, and Count Saint-Germain, all whom are well-known European literary figures.

One of the best features of the game is definitely how well the characters are written. Each character has a very distinct personality from one another that makes them memorable, which make their interactions with one another leave you wanting MORE! The characters’ relationships with one another starts out of need of another’s skill, knowledge, or if they have similar objectives; they all don’t immediately start out as friends. In fact, some of the characters come close to killing one another before they can come to terms with each other and what they want to accomplish as a team. Throughout the game, you’ll see everyone’s relationship build upon what sort of situation they’re in, to then become a tight-knit team that will have each other’s back no matter what. And that’s what makes these characters so unforgettable: they all have differing personalities that might seem like they may not mesh well together, but the character development as the game goes on is truly genuine and beautiful. As you play Code: Realize, I’m sure you’ll be inclined to agree as you fall in love with these characters! 💖

Speaking of characters, let’s talk about our heroine, Cardia.

Cardia is pretty much the best MC I’ve ever seen in an otome game. Why is that? She starts out in isolation, not wanting to do anything but just sleep due to her emotional pain with being called a “monster” while she lies in wait for her father, but once Lupin “steals” her away from the Royal Guards, she begins her quest to discover what she truly is, what her father’s plans are, and what might life offer to someone like her. She begins as a tabula rasa, but she yearns for knowledge to try and put together the pieces of her existence. Unlike other otome game MCs, Cardia takes a lot more action in order to try and gain answers. Every predicament she was in, she always tried to find a possible solution, like for instance, if she’s locked in a room, she’ll try to melt or pick the door’s lock. Or if someone tries to capture her, she’ll either run away or try to knock them out in one hit to then run away. If you’ve ever been so FRUSTRATED at an otome game MC because of their lack of action, you won’t be disappointed as you get to know Cardia and what she’s capable of. Simply put: Cardia is AWESOME! 👍

Throughout the game, you’ll see the word “monster” a lot. What makes someone a “monster?” This becomes one of the themes in this game, as various characters have different definitions as to what makes someone a “monster.” Interestingly enough, the concept of what makes someone human makes an appearance as well. These two topics gives the game a bit more depth, as they’re both intriguing topics to think and talk about. I’ll probably say more on this in a future entry, since it’ll be a lengthy set of topics to write on.

Another wonderful thing about this game is the gorgeous art! ✨ The artist (known as “Miko”) does a marvelous job, not only with the very beautiful CGs, but with each of the characters sprites. Everything from the characters, their costume design and their accessories are quite a sight to behold! I had to stop for a few minutes to fully absorb the art. I feel that this is definitely a game whose art books I need to get! I’ve actually acquired one of the books, the B’sLog Collection Code: Realize Fan Book. Here’s a preview of that book:

Along with Miko’s beautiful character art, the game boasts some amazingly intricate background illustrations. They help set the mood for the particular scene you’re playing through, ranging from the isolated mansion that Cardia starts out in, to the majestic haunting castle that the main cast visits, to the creepy sewers that some are forced to go through.

Here’s a neat touch in this game: whatever time of the day you choose to play, the title screen changes. So if you choose to play the game at 8:00 p.m., the title screen will display the view of London at night time! It took me awhile to see this, since I mostly played in the evenings. It’s small details like these that make games stand out a bit more.

Let’s talk about the various menus in the title screen.

Selecting the New Game option prompts you with the name screen, where you can enter the name for the heroine or choose to leave it as it is. If you choose to leave the name as “Cardia,” the characters will vocally say her name.

The Continue option goes directly to all the save files you have of the game. Depending on the size of your memory card, you can have a HUGE amount of saves, making it easy to get each ending of every character.

Selecting the Settings option allows you to change various things in the game, such as the text speed, whether you want Cardia’s character icon to appear or not, the autoplay and skip mode settings, the volume of the BGM, SE, and voices, and whether you want to mute a particular character. It also has the option to change the control scheme.

Count Saint-Germain is a wealthy landowner with a mansion in London and a gentleman at heart with an air of grace and dignity. He graciously opens the doors of his home to the protagonist and her party. He is somewhat of strange bird but he is happy to help everyone for the amusement it provides. [1]

He is one of the five characters the player can choose to pursue in the game.

He is also voiced by Daisuke Hirakawa in Japanese and Brandon Mcinnis in English.

Appearance [ ]

Saint-Germain is always seen with his eyes closed, in keeping with his «fox eyes» type personality. When they are open, however, they appear to be a clear, icy blue color. It is very rare he is shown with his eyes open. If he is, it often means he is giving his «zero temperature smile», or the situation is considered serious.

However in the sequel games this is not the case and his eyes are more often shown open. In his own route, his eyes are open for most of its duration.

He first appears in the second episode.

His wardrobe consists of many watches and clock motifs. Being the wealthy noble that he is, he dresses more lavishly than the others, though he tends to stick to dark, purple colors. His gloves are resistant to Cardia’s poison and contain hidden blades.

Personality [ ]

Like Van Helsing, Saint-Germain is quite mysterious and not much is really known about him. He seems to be a kind and warm-hearted man who wants to stay out of trouble, but he is always willing to join the gang on any adventure. He finds most dangerous things amusing, even when others would not. He often jokes about whether he comes off as «old.» Out of all the gang, he appears to be the only one who believes in God.

It’s hard to read his emotions because he’s always smiling. He’s even-tempered, but when angered, he’s incredibly intimidating. The fastest way to anger him is to threaten to steal or destroy his beloved art collection.

He is very fond of the gang, and gets lonely whenever his mansion sits empty for too long.

Story [ ]

Chapter 1: London Steam [ ]

Cardia first runs into Saint when she sees a shadowy figure moving through his mansion in the night, and when she follows the figure, she eventually stumbles across Saint in one of the many rooms.

The gang agrees that it would be best for Cardia to take lessons with each person there. In her first lesson with Saint, he takes her around the city of London.

Chapter 4: Train Robbery [ ]

During the train heist, Cardia can choose to go with Impey, Lupin, and Saint and leave the station to plan their getaway.

Chapter 5: The Vampire’s Requiem [ ]

It comes to their attention that the gang is broke. Saint is willing to let them keep living there, but he refuses to pay for their expenditures, quoting «If a man will not work, he shall not eat.» As such, the gang decides to try to apprehend the thief who has been stealing vampire artifacts in order to get the bounty on his head. At the auction, Cardia is uneasy that their funds will come at the expense of someone else’s life, and Saint sympathizes with her. He agrees to help cover the gang’s expenditures for a while, although he insists that this is only a temporary solution.

Chapter 6: Negotiated Solution [ ]

After Lupin steals from several noblemen, the gang’s funds are replenished. Saint and Cardia go out shopping for groceries when they are attacked by Twilight soldiers. Thankfully, Sholmes comes to their rescue, but he informs them that soon he will start hunting their gang in earnest, as Scotland Yard has enlisted his help in tracking down Victor.

After they successfully clear Victor’s name, the gang celebrates with a feast. Sholmes drops by to congratulate them on their victory, and Saint offers him a seat at the table in exchange for not sharing their location with the Yard. To everyone’s surprise, Sholmes accepts cheerfully.

Chapter 7: The Buoyant and the Bellicose [ ]

When the gang catches wind that Isaac’s writings are the first place prize in the Black Gathering, the annual underworld airship race in Steel London, they decide to compete to win the papers in order to find information on where Isaac’s secret lab might be. With a lot of hard work, the gang fixes up a stolen airship in time for the competition.

Saint is in charge of keeping a lookout on whatever damages the ship takes during the race. When they’re on the brink of defeat, Impey unveils his special human cannon meant to fire Van Helsing at their enemies. While everyone else is unsure if it’s a good idea, Saint casually launches Van through the air, toward Nemo’s ship.

Chapter 8: Nobody Understands the Truth [ ]

Before the gang goes to Isaac’s laboratory, Saint finds Cardia in the gardens. Cardia is both eager and afraid of seeing what is in the laboratory, and she finally explains the tragedy that happened 2 years ago that terrified her into never leaving her old manor again. Saint expresses his condolences for all she has suffered.

At the lab, Cardia splits off with Saint. When the gang gets ambushed by Twilight soldiers, Saint is assigned to be her bodyguard and to get her away from the danger. In the darkness, however, they get separated. Cardia eventually stumbles upon the chamber where all of her previous failed homunculus prototypes are, and Finis is there to revel in her despair. Before he can capture her, however, Saint sneaks up behind him and stabs him through the chest. Saint opens his eyes for the first time before Cardia and reveals to Finis that he is an Apostle of Idea, which terrifies Finis, as the Apostles of Idea were feared by Isaac as the one organization that could destroy him. Saint leaves Finis to bleed out on the ground, so coldly that Cardia is for a moment terrified of him. Upon recognizing her fear, Saint looks heartbroken but gently urges her to come with him so that they can rejoin the others.

After finding out the truth about what she is, Cardia decides to leave the mansion to protect the others. On her way out, though, she runs into Saint. Saint agrees that she should separate herself from the others, and asks her if she would like to go to another location to hide out instead. Cardia accepts, and they head into the forest.

Chapter 9: Twilight [ ]

As they walk through the forest, Cardia and Saint make idle conversation about all the places he has been, and Cardia realizes that despite all they’ve been through, there’s a lot about Saint that she doesn’t know. He claims that he is just a wealthy nobleman burning through his inheritance. Saint confesses that many years ago, he made a terrible mistake, and that he must take care to never let such a thing happen again. Once they arrive at Saint’s secondary mansion a day later, Saint asks her once again if this is what she wants. If Cardia changes her mind, then he will walk her back to the original mansion before disappearing, never to be seen again.

While eating dinner at this second mansion, Cardia feels homesick and asks if the others can know about this place, lest they think she’s been kidnapped. Saint muses that they wouldn’t be wrong to think so. Cardia is unnerved by this before she passes out at the table. Saint carries her to her bedroom, and after a while she wakes back up only to find Saint with a dagger. He tells her that he is going to kill her, but that it won’t hurt because he has coated the dagger with a special poison that numbs the pain. If Cardia doesn’t resist, then he will go through with it and weep over her dying body. If she does fight back, then the dagger will fall to the ground, rendered useless, and Saint will strangle Cardia until she passes out.

Chapter 10: Seeker [ ]

When she wakes up, Cardia finds that the entire room is poison-proofed, and Saint tells her that the gang will not find her as he destroyed their Horologium tracker. He will let her live for a while longer, until he can prepare a fresh batch of numbing poison so that she can die painlessly as intended. Cardia tries to get him to explain why he’s doing this, but he won’t answer, saying only that he wishes they could have met under different circumstances, and been a hero for her like Lupin instead of her enemy. He lets slip that their time with Lupin’s Gang reminds him of when he was alive, but Cardia doesn’t understand what this means. He begs her to hate him for what he is going to do. That night, Cardia tries to break out of her room, but she can’t.

The next day, Saint ties her up to the bedpost because they have an unexpected guest, and he needs to make a show of restraining her should that guest see her. This gives Cardia the opportunity to burn through the ropes and free herself. If Cardia tries to melt the keyhole of the front door with her poison, it will take too long and Saint will find and kill her. If she picks the lock, she will escape, leaving a stunned Saint behind as she runs into the night.

She manages to return to familiar streets quickly, and wonders if the forest had some magical properties before heading back to the original mansion. Suddenly, she is attacked by an armor-clad Assailant, the same one she’d seen in Saint’s mansion before. Victor and Van thankfully find her and they hurry to safety. The gang has been looking for her and are glad to see her again.

Chapter 11: Saint-Germain [ ]

After escaping back to reunite with the gang, Cardia explains everything that has happened, along with her suspicions that he’s acting on someone else’s orders. Everyone decides to dig into Saint’s past. Victor finds an alchemical text written 200 years ago by someone known as the Count of Saint-Germain, with the same handwriting as the Saint they know. Cardia remembers Finis’s dying words about Idea and they go back to Isaac’s lab to see if Isaac had any writings that might shed light on things. Lupin notes that Cardia is different now that she is in love.

They end up finding one of Isaac’s papers where he details how the Apostles of Idea have been shepherding humanity for eons, and as Isaac’s plans will upend society, they are seeking to stop him. They also find a red gemstone pendant left behind in the homunculus chamber that reacts to Cardia’s Horologium. Victor explains that this gemstone might catalyze the transformation of the Horologium into the Philosopher’s stone, and also cause Cardia to release a massive amount of lethal poison gas.

Suddenly, they are attacked by the Assailant. The others stay behind to stop them while Lupin and Cardia make a run for it. Saint appears at the last minute to fight the Assailant, declaring that he will be the one to kill Cardia. The Assailant says that she is only here because Omnibus sent her to finish what Saint could not. During their fight, Saint gets impaled upon the Assailant’s blade, but he heals before everyone’s eyes. The Assailant, named Guinevere, wonders how many more times he can come back to life, now that he’s going against Omnibus’s orders. With Saint holding Guinevere off, Cardia escapes with the gang.

With all that they’ve found out, Cardia feels restless, so Lupin takes her for a stroll. The world comes to a halt around her, and Omnibus appears before her. Omnibus has created a shift in reality with magic to allow them to speak to each other. Omnibus explains how the Apostles are dispatched to stop humanity’s hubris as atonement for original sin. In truth, each Apostle is already dead, their soul cut away from their original body and placed into a magical vessel that can be regenerated by Omnibus. Saint has already destroyed Finis and ruined Isaac’s plan. Still, it is necessary for Saint to kill her because her Horologium is too dangerous, and that the last time Saint disobeyed her orders, the Black Death ravaged Europe and killed tens of millions. As such, she tells Cardia to meet Saint at Tower Bridge in a few nights to allow him to kill her. This will allow Omnibus to spare Saint and the rest of humanity. The weight of the decision causes Cardia to cry.

Chapter 12: Time For Decision [ ]

While looking over the city and noting how it has changed over the centuries, Saint thinks back on his failure in stopping the Black Death. Centuries ago, Omnibus had ordered him to monitor a village for any signs of disease, and to kill anyone who caught it. During his stay there, he took in an orphan boy and grew fond of him, enough so that when the disease inevitably did appear in the village, Saint ended up killing everyone except the boy. Sadly, the boy ended up spreading the Black Death to the rest of Europe, so Saint blames all of those deaths on his weakness.

Cardia confronts Saint at the bridge. Saint prepares to kill Cardia, but he is still terribly conflicted and asks what he should do. If Cardia says that she doesn’t know what the right answer is, that she is afraid to die but afraid to cause his death, then he will apologize for putting the burden of decision on her when it is his. He weeps, and says that these will be the last tears he ever sheds because his heart will be truly dead after she dies. Then, he kills her.

If Cardia tells him not to hesitate, she will say that she was never truly alive in the first place, so killing her isn’t murder. To save his life, she will gladly sacrifice her artificial one. This angers him, and he reminds her that dying means never sharing happiness with her loved ones ever again. In truth, Cardia is afraid of that, but she doesn’t believe that a monster like her has the right. Her words break Saint’s resolve, and he is unable to kill her. He takes her bare hand and presses it to his face, reminding them both that they are unnatural beings who are not truly alive. To hear her say that her life is meaningless cuts him to the bone, for that would apply to him, too. He realizes that the reason why he cannot kill her is because he loves her.

After his face heals, he resolves to save Cardia by killing all of the other 12 Apostles that Omnibus will inevitably send. Each Apostle can only be brought back so many times, after all, so if he kills them enough times, then they will truly die. He knows, however, that once Omnibus realizes his intentions, she will halt his own regenerative abilities. He temporarily paralyzes her to keep her from following him, and thanks her for allowing him to truly live by dedicating his life to saving hers.

At Idea’s headquarters, Omnibus calls for Guinevere and informs her that 2 of the Apostles have died. Guinevere is stunned by Saint’s betrayal. Omnibus notes that Saint may even succeed, as he is fighting desperately in the name of love. Guinevere resolves to stop him.

Chapter 13: Promise [ ]

Saint confronts Guinevere, after having already killed 4 of the Apostles. If he can kill her, the strongest Apostle by far, then he knows that even should he die, Cardia will be safe. Meanwhile, Cardia and the gang determine that the only way to save Saint is to somehow negotiate with Omnibus. Once Victor realizes that the red pendant that they’d picked up from the lab can trigger Cardia’s transformation into the Philosopher’s stone, Cardia decides to use it as a bargaining chip to force Omnibus into allowing them to live. Using an old text, they pinpoint Idea’s headquarters in a mysterious forest called the Forest of Fog in western Britain.

Once in the forest, Cardia gets separated from the other and is led to Omnibus’s home by her dog, Lilith. Cardia demands that Omnibus restore Saint’s immortality to keep him from dying at Guinevere’s hands, but she refuses as Saint’s betrayal cannot go unpunished. Cardia threatens to turn herself into a monster that even Idea could not vanquish unless Omnibus complies. Cardia offers to destroy herself should Omnibus spare Saint, to remove herself as a threat. Omnibus tries to prey upon her fears of loneliness, but Cardia is steadfast, saying that the memory of Saint’s touch could sustain her through the rest of her life.

Finally, Omnibus agrees to extend Saint’s life if he can defeat Guinevere. By Omnibus’s predictions, it should be impossible, but if he can surprise her, then she will believe that the future can be changed. Omnibus takes her to Tower Bridge, where Saint is gravely weakened from his fight with Guinevere. Cardia explains the bargain she struck with Omnibus, so Saint gathers the last of his strength to take on Guinevere. However, she omits the part where she promised to destroy herself, knowing that Saint would not go through with the deal if he knew. Saint throws himself into the fight and, with Cardia’s help, defeats Guinevere. Before he can fully kill Guinevere, however, Cardia tells him the truth of her bargain.

When Omnibus arrives to collect on her deal, she heals Saint but cuts his lifespan to a normal human one instead of an immortal one. Saint stops Cardia from killing herself and begs Omnibus for time to find a cure for her Horologium. Omnibus appears unmoved until Guinevere arises to support him. With her two strongest apostles standing against her, Omnibus agrees to give Saint and Cardia time to find a cure to her poison, but warns that Idea will come after them again if they are unsuccessful.

If Cardia and Saint’s affection isn’t high enough, then Saint will be killed by Guinevere even though he defeats her. Heartbroken by his loss, Cardia ends up joining Idea herself, with Omnibus promising to kill her and deliver her to the same place as Saint. She cuts off contact with the gang, preferring that they not see what she has become. Still, she will not obey Omnibus’s orders blindly, and she will intervene when she feels Omnibus is incorrect, just as Saint did for her. Cardia endeavors to keep smiling, however falsely, as that was Saint’s dying wish.

Epilogue + Short Story [ ]

In the epilogue, Cardia and Saint are traveling in search of clues about curing her Horologium, although the gang was a little concerned about her being alone with him after everything. Lupin and Impey have gone looking for something, Victor has opened a clinic, and Van has been working with Delly to help surviving vampires. Saint sulks at how she’s so eager to reunite with everyone despite him being right by her side, though she reassures him that they belong to each other and that she’ll always stay beside him. He kisses her, despite the poison, and reminds her that he alone can do this with her. Cardia gets flustered and tells him to save it until the poison is gone, although she secretly looks forward to that day.

In the short story, Cardia goes to get Saint for lunch, but he appears to be struggling to put on a recently imported kimono. Cardia tries to help him, oblivious to the implications of a woman being alone with a half-dressed man, but Impey arrives and is devastated at walking in on them in Saint’s current state of undress. Saint finds the entire situation amusing.

Abraham Van Helsing [ ]

They get along well enough, but Saint is not above shooting him out of a cannon in midair while they’re being fired upon.

Arsene Lupin [ ]

Of all of the potential love interests, Lupin and Saint have the greatest rivalry when it comes to Cardia. When Saint feels insecure about his relationship, Lupin will threaten to steal Cardia away from him if he doesn’t get his act together. Still, they get along perfectly fine and trust each other in the heat of battle.

Cardia Beckford [ ]

He feels a great kinship with Cardia, as both of them are «monsters» who shouldn’t be alive. Whenever Cardia speaks about herself, it pains Saint because he has had similar thoughts in his life. He loves her deeply and enjoys showering her with gifts. He’s also somewhat smug about the fact that he is the only one who can touch her directly even with her condition.

Impey Barbicane [ ]

He finds Impey very amusing, and enjoys trolling him, but not enough to allow Impey to threaten his art collection.

The Assailant [ ]

As Saint was the one to recruit her to Idea, they have a unique relationship. She finds him strange and illogical, especially when he defies Omnibus. Their relationship gets strained during his route, as she cannot understand his unwillingness to carry out his duty.

Omnibus [ ]

He has followed Omnibus for almost his entire life, and trusts her orders unconditionally until Cardia. Omnibus sees him as something like a son, but she will always prioritize the safety of mankind, first and foremost.
