🎉 DeadCode Open-Source Project

Ремапнутые сурсы (с очень большим кол-вом говнокода) чита DeadCode.

Так как весь стафф этого чита состоит из клоунов, которые не следят за тем что говорят (DeathMeowSide привет), мы сливаем ремапнутые сурсы чита.

Так же в сурсах есть классы с пустыми именами. Это классы с натив обфускацией, которую никак не снять (если очень хочется, можно самому проанализировать вызовы методов и понять, что делает определенный метод, и переписать его самому).

Имена классов/методов были взяты из GishCode, так как DeadCode это прямая паста гишкода, и очень много кода вообще никак не отличается.

Оригинальная джарка дедкода, пофикшенная джарка и ремапнутая джарка лежат в папке bin.

How to detect dead code in a frontend project

Having a large amount of dead code in a project can be detrimental to your app for many reasons. Dead code makes the codebase substantially harder to maintain at scale. It also has the potential to create confusion within the development team as to which pieces of code are relevant and actively worked on and which ones can be safely ignored.

The best way to avoid these pitfalls is to ensure we have the appropriate tooling in place to allow us to detect dead code both reliably and automatically.

In this article, we’ll cover three ways to detect dead code in your frontend project, plus an extra bonus section:

Using ESLint to detect and remove dead code

ESLint is perhaps the most widely used JavaScript linter, with nearly 25 million weekly downloads on npm. It is — or at least should be — an integral part of every JavaScript project. Among many other useful things, ESLint allows us to detect unused variables in our files with its aptly named no-unused-vars rule.

This rule protects us from introducing dead code in two ways. First, it will tell us if we have declared a variable that is not used elsewhere in the file:

To enable the rule, you can simply add it to the rules object in your ESLint configuration file. The «extends»: «eslint:recommended» property in the same file also enables the rule. Find more information on ESLint rules and how to configure them here. Most of the behavior described above is configurable and can be tweaked to fit specific project needs.

The no-unused-vars ESLint rule is an excellent tool for dead code detection. Its usage is strongly recommended both for local development and as part of a continuous integration pipeline.

But on its own, this rule is not enough to ensure we detect all dead code in our project. How come?

The vast majority of modern frontend projects use ECMAScript modules to organize and reuse code via imports and exports. This means that even if a variable or function is not used within the file, as long as it is exported, it is no longer considered unused.

We seem to have hit the limit of this ESLint rule. So, how can we know all exported code is imported and used elsewhere in our project and, therefore, not dead?

While the plugin is excellent and actively supported, there still might be good reasons to use another approach. For example, what if our project is not using ESLint at all? Perhaps we want to detect unused imports and exports only in our CI pipeline to make our linter lighter for speedier local development, and we don’t want to support different configurations for both environments. Or maybe we ran into some of the open issues with this setup.

Whatever the case may be, there is an alternative solution: webpack

Using webpack for dead code detection

Webpack is a module bundler that is widely used in modern web apps. Its main purpose is to bundle JavaScript files for usage in a browser. Essentially, webpack is used to create a dependency graph of your application and combine every module of your project into a bundle. This makes the tool perfectly positioned to detect unused imports and exports, i.e., dead code.

Using TypeScript to detect dead code

Using TypeScript in our project has a number of advantages. One of them is that it provides us with an easy way to detect dead code.

First, we can configure TypeScript in a way that doesn’t allow for unused local variables and function parameters. This is similar to the no-unused-vars ESLint rule above. To enforce these rules via TypeScript, we can add them to our tsconfig file:

But, even with these checks in place, we still face the issue of unused exports. Let’s use ts-prune for the job. It is easy to use and requires very little (if any) configuration.

Now, every time we run npm run find-deadcode in our project, we will have a list of all unused exports.

Note that the script above will detect unused exports, even if they are used internally within the module. To opt out of this behavior, modify your script to exclude these:

Finally, if you want to use ts-prune in CI, you will need to change the exit code so that an error occurs when there are unused exports. Here’s the final modification:

Bonus: Detect unused dependencies with depcheck

While we’re on the subject of dead code detection, let’s briefly discuss how to ensure we don’t have unused dependencies in our project. Let’s use depcheck, a tool for analyzing the dependencies in a project. It can tell us:

Depcheck uses a special component that allows us to recognize dependencies used outside of the regular import/export flow. These include dependencies used in configuration files, npm commands, scripts, and more.

Conclusion

In this article, we explored different approaches to detect dead code in your frontend project. These approaches can be used both interchangeably and in combination with one another. As is often the case, choosing our ideal setup depends heavily on the particular use case.

It’s also important to note that these are not the only existing dead code detection tools. They were selected based on the prevalence and popularity of the underlying tools (ESLint, webpack, and TypeScript). But, depending on the particularities of the project, the optimal solution might not be on this list.

Deadcode shows you source files that are not required anywhere given entry point scripts.

Deadcode list all files not required anywhere in your project and let you remove them.

Deadcode will ignore dynamic requires but will provide you with a list of files that contain them.

Deadcode look for import declarations and calls of the require function. In other word if you assign require to another var and use it to load a dependency, it will not handle it.

Dead code is any code that’s never executed, or if executed, the execution has no effect on the application’s behaviour.

Dead code adds unnecessary complexity to the codebase. It makes the codebase more difficult to understand and maintain in the long run. It impacts performance and security. In some cases, due to poor software engineering practices, dead code can «come back to life» and cause catastrophic failures. It’s therefore recommended to remove dead code.

Tools and techniques are available to help developers get rid of dead code. But developers tend to leave them around rather than remove them. It’s been said that,

Deleting dead code is not a technical problem; it is a problem of mindset and culture.

Discussion

Dead code is any code that has no effect on the application’s behaviour. This is a simple and useful definition. Looking into the details, we identify some alternatives to this definition.

Code that is unnecessarily executed is called redundant code. This would include variable assignments or function returns that are subsequently never used. A subset of this may be called partially dead code that refers to code that’s essential only on some program paths.

Code that can’t be reached or executed on any program path is called unreachable code. This could happen if there’s an unconditional function return and there’s code that follows the return statement. Code that’s commented is another example. A superset of this is unused code that could be executed but it’s not executed because the user never triggers it.

Since public types, methods and fields could be called by client code, we don’t consider them as dead during static analysis or compilation. However, a linker can still identify dead code and remove them if they see that client code is not calling them. An example of this is R8 code shrinker that developers use in Android projects.

Dead code introduces unnecessary complexity and confusion. People who maintain code are usually not the same as those who created it. With dead code around, it’s hard to know what’s safe to delete or update. Developers may even maintain dead code (and their test cases) without realizing that it’s a waste of effort. From a design perspective, dead code increases or preserves coupling among classes. This in turn makes code refactoring more difficult.

Dead code takes up extra space. Program size is larger and so too its runtime footprint.

Dead code that executes without changing application’s functional behaviour but may affect performance. CPU cycles are spent in executing redundant code.

Dead code that hasn’t been touched for a long time may also contain security issues that could be exploited by hackers. It’s smarter to delete such code than maintain it.

A patent is infringed only if the code that implements the claimed invention actually executes. Therefore, patent holders will have a weaker case if some of their code is dead. This is yet another reason to identify dead code.

In 2014, Apple fixed a security vulnerability that was attributed to a copy-paste edit that lead to dead code. A duplicate line of code allowed an attacker to bypass an authentication check, which became dead code. Static code analysis would have caught this problem. Informal peer review, formal code inspection, test coverage (line and path coverage) and training developers are other ways this could have been prevented or caught earlier.

Dead code arises due to software maintenance and software aging. For example, a new fragment of code might make another code fragment dead. Developers are either unaware of this or think that such code may be needed again someday. When software ages, dead code due to obsolete features is a common reason.

Where a codebase is inherited from another company, we can have inherited dead code. When developers recognize the dead code, they might comment it out or add comments to flag it. They may remove it only if it’s low risk and low cost.

Sometimes code is created dead with the expectation that it could be used in future. In classes, the use of getters and setters is such an example. Unclear or incomplete specifications are further reasons for dead code. Code reuse can cause dead code since not all interfaces or functions may be used.

Sometimes dead code is active during testing but not in production. Developers therefore don’t consider removing it. On the contrary, lack of automated regression testing makes developers wary of any refactoring.

For JavaScript frontend code, minifiers remove dead code for production builds. Likewise, there are options to C++ compilers and linkers that eliminate dead code. These reduce program size and perhaps improve performance. However, they don’t solve the problem of dead code at the source, which implies that software maintenance continues to be complex.

Milestones

In this decade, there’s research towards better compilers, program certification and program optimization. For example, Rosen’s 1977 paper titled High-Level Data Flow Analysis adopts directed graphs as an analysis tool. These research initiatives facilitate dead code elimination.

Based on techniques for partial redundancy elimination, Knoop et al. present an optimal method for partial dead code elimination. Their method is optimal in the sense that any remaining partially dead code can’t be eliminated without changing the code structure or its semantics.

In a book about software refactoring, Brown et al. take note of «unused code frozen in an ever-changing design.» They call this lava flow.

Martin Fowler in his book titled Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code identifies 22 code smells and suggests ways to remove them. However, he doesn’t explicitly mention dead code as a code smell.

Bolton and Ung file for a patent with the title Partial dead code elimination optimizations for program code conversion. They identify partially dead register definitions that can be eliminated towards more optimized intermediate representation of the code.

As part of Android Studio 3.3 beta, Google releases R8 for code shrinking. With R8, APK size reduces. R8 gets rid of unused code and resources. It also does code minification to save space. Proguard is another tool that does this but R8 does it faster while achieving similar results.

In an analysis of code smells, dos Reis et al. include dead code as one of the code smells. From the 83 studies selected for the analysis, they find that 4.8% contain dead code. The most prominent code smell is the God Class, present in 51.8% of the studies.

Trending sort is based off of the default sorting method — by highest score — but it boosts votes that have happened recently, helping to surface more up-to-date answers.

In Eclipse, «dead code» is code that will never be executed. Usually it’s in a conditional branch that logically will never be entered.

DeadCodeDetector is a gem which finds code that hasn’t been used in production environments so that it can be removed.

DeadCodeDetector takes advantage of Ruby’s ability to dynamically define methods. For each class that you want to track, it dynamically rewrites every method on that class to track its usage. Here’s a simplified version of what it does:

Because DeadCodeDetector only records method calls once, the performance overhead at runtime is negligible.

DeadCodeDetector only tracks method calls and does not track which code is used inside the method. If that is what you are after, consider looking at coverband. It can track code usage at a more granular level, but it has its own tradeoffs.

There are four steps to using DeadCodeDetector:

Before DeadCodeDetector can do anything, it needs to calculate and store a list of methods that it’s going to track. Call this method from a production console to initialize that database:

If you add new classes or methods to your code which you want to track, you can call refresh_caches again at any time to clear all the accumulated data in Redis and start fresh. Until refresh_caches has been called at least once, DeadCodeDetector won’t do anything.

Wrap the code that you want to monitor in an DeadCodeDetector.enable block. Any code inside that block will record method calls in DeadCodeDetector’s storage when they’re called for the first time.

In Rails controllers, this could look like:

Once DeadCodeDetector has been running for a while, you can generate a report on what methods have not been called by calling DeadCodeDetector::Report.unused_methods

Note: This report doesn’t say that methods are never called, only that they haven’t been called. The longer DeadCodeDetector runs for, the more confident you can be that the method is unused.

Also, it’s possible that some methods are being used, but are only called during the application boot process. DeadCodeDetector is unable to track those and may mis-report them as unused.

After checking out the repo, run bin/setup to install dependencies. Then, run rake spec to run the tests. You can also run bin/console for an interactive prompt that will allow you to experiment.

Increase quality, decrease files and save money by removing unused, dead code.

Dead code, what’s that?

means unnecessary, inoperative code that can—and should—be removed. The opposite of dead code is live, operational code.

You can significantly improve a program’s quality by removing dead code. While the functionality won’t change, it will improve the internal quality—the quality of the source code. This will help in maintenance by decreasing the maintained code size, making it easier to understand the program and preventing bugs from being introduced.

If you’re working with Visual Basic (or VB.NET or VBA), you can use our Project Analyzer to detect and even remove dead code. Project Analyzer shows how much dead and semi-dead code there is and where. Utilizing advanced analysis techniques and an extensive rule base tuned for Visual Basic and VB.NET, Project Analyzer can reliably detect dead code from live code. The analysis works reliably also with the most complex code that utilizes object-oriented techniques and late binding.

Types of dead code

Dead procedure or function

A is not called by any other procedure. It is thus never executed and not required for any purpose.

Dead produres make up the most important part of dead code. They bloat the executables, make systems harder to understand and might even introduce new errors later in the life-cycle of the program.

Many compilers include all procedures in the executables regardless of whether they are used or not. This bloats the file size—and the bloating effect may be really high.

Even if you don’t care a about the executable size, dead procedures have another adverse effect: they make your program harder to understand. A person trying to make sense of your program spends time reading the dead procedures.

If a dead procedure is later reused in the program, it may introduce new bugs in it. Why was the procedure dead in the first place? Did it function incorrectly? Was it superseded by a better function? Did it perform useless or wrong actions? The dead code may not have been tested thoroughly and it may contain bugs that are hard to detect. Even if the dead procedure was good and well tested 5 years ago when it was last used, it might not work in today’s program, in the current environment, on modern hardware or according to the current requirements and business rules.

A special case of a dead procedure is one that has callers, but the callers never execute. In this case you need the procedure to compile the program, but not to execute it. The way to solve this is to delete the callers along with this procedure.

Dead variable

A is not read nor written. It is completely useless, only taking up memory and a line or two of code. Not a big problem, right? Wrong.

You might later write code that reads the dead variable without noticing there’s nothing to read, really. You might be building your code against missing data. Alternatively, you might assign the dead variable a value expecting some other part of the program to pick it up and take action. Again, the program would not perform as you expected.

Truly dead variables are one problem, but a more significant problem lies in partially used variables. A variable should be both written to and read from. If the other side is missing, the variable is read-only or written-only. These variables indicate hidden bugs in the program.

A is one that is given a value (or several values) but the value is never read. The program may be doing some serious calculation to set the value, yet it’s all in vain. This may indicate a flaw in the program. Maybe the function or class that should read the value was not implemented properly. Maybe the variable is an important status or error code and the developers just forgot to take the appropriate action on it.

Similarly, a is one that is being read, but never assigned a value. Even harder to detect, it may be assigned an empty value only, keeping the variable empty at all times. This may indicate missing logic in the program. The function or class responsible for storing the value was not written or it was deleted by accident. Read instructions don’t yield a proper value and reader procedures may not behave the expected way.

A variable may also be referenced in the code, but not actually used at run-time. In such a case, the reader and writer procedures are all dead. The variable is left effectively dead too. What is more, some readers may be alive but all the writers dead (or vice versa). This means the variable is in partial use only, and a potential flaw exists in the code. This type of dead code is very hard to detect without a proper code analysis tool.

Dead parameter

A is passed to a procedure but not used by it. Passing parameters takes a little bit of time during each call. Dead parameters can make your program slower, especially if they are in the public interface and require marshaling.

An unused parameter also gives callers a wrong idea of what your code does. Suppose you have a function called WriteFile with a dead Boolean parameter called Overwrite. A person writing a call to WriteFile expects the parameter to have an effect. It’s probably for controlling whether an old file will be overwritten or not: a True value would overwrite, a False value would ensure preserving the old file. Well, as this is a dead parameter, it has no effect whatsoever. The function might be overwriting the old file or failing, and the caller would have the wrong idea of what it’s doing. Thus, a dead parameter may indicate a flaw in the function or at least give the wrong indication leading to mistakes in the future.

Dead return value

A of a function is not stored or used by any of the callers. This indicates one of two alternatives:

Sometimes a part of the callers use the return value, but the other callers ignore it. This indicates a potential flaw in the ignoring callers.

Dead event declaration

A does not fire. A is not handled nor fired. A just does not fire and its handlers are not executed.

Publishing dead events in your classes or controls may cause headache to the users of these classes/controls. The users write code to handle the event, yet the event never fires. Where’s the problem? It’s hard to tell when the class/control doesn’t work «as advertised».

How about an event that fires but that’s not handled? Is that a dead event? No, that’s not dead. Most events are designed (or should be) so that handling them is optional. The class or control should function correctly even if no events are handled.

Dead enumeration or constant

A or a is not required by the program. You should remove such unused data. Depending on the program, the data might be compiled in the executable, thus bloating its size.

In Visual Basic, dead numeric constants do not end up in the executable, but string constants do.

Dead user-defined type

A (structure, record) is one that is not used anywhere. It might not do much harm, but if it’s useless, there is no point keeping it available. It will only make the program harder to read.

Fields of a user-defined type are like variables. They can be dead too.

Dead class

A is not used anywhere. It may still be compiled in the executable and even published as a part of the library interface. This bloats the executable and makes the library unnecessarily complex. And what if the class should become alive again? Would it still be functioning correctly? The class may contain untested or old code. A developer using the class might not notice this. By reintroducing the class in the program he could be adding errors.

A may be in use as a data type but not instantiated at run-time. Again, it’s a useless class that should probably be removed.

A special case of a semi-dead class is an abstract base class that is not inherited. The base class is useless as it cannot be instantiated. Child classes should be added or the base class should be removed.

Dead interface

A is not used anywhere. It’s only making the program more complex and harder to understand.

A may be in use as a data type but not implemented by any class. In this case, the users of the interface are written against non-existing code. When the users execute, they may fail due to a missing object reference (NULL pointer).

Alternatively, the semi-dead interface may be implemented by a class (or two or more), but never really used for making calls. This has the same drawbacks as a dead class has.

Dead module, dead file

A and a is one whose contents are not used for any purpose. They are only making the program more complex, more bloated and harder to understand. Such modules and files should be excluded from the program and stored at a special location for potential reuse.

Dead control

A control on a form may be invisible, outside of form borders or disabled during its lifetime. Such a control is possibly a leftover from ealier UI changes.

Carrying invisible or disabled controls will bloat the executable size and consume extra system resources at run-time. A needless control might also cause an extra run-time file dependency. Suppose the needless control requires an additional OCX. You need to include the OCX in the setup package and distribute to the users. They need to have the correct version installed or your program might crash. The OCX needs to be loaded and initiated when your form shows up. All this for no use. If you can remove the control and get rid of the OCX, your program will be easier to distribute and faster to run.

Sometimes an invisible or disabled control is required, though. The code might access the control’s methods or properties for some purpose. Remove dead controls with care.

Dead external declaration

Dead declarations may bloat the executable size. They also make it harder to understand what external calls the program actually makes. If a dead declaration should have a bug, such as an incorrect parameter data type, a developer using that declaration later could introduce a bug that is hard to detect. (Yes, this happened to us too.)

Unreachable statement

An is one that can never execute. There exists no control flow path to the statement. Unreachable code is typically found after an unconditional jump or in a branch that cannot happen. It can also exist in a loop that doesn’t get iterated, or after a forever loop where execution never flows out of the loop.

Unreachable code may indicate an error in the program: important code doesn’t execute. Unreachable code can also be a remnant of previous functionality which as been disabled, either deliberately or accidentally.

A block of code can be unreachable due to either compile-time or run-time reasons. Compile-time unreachability means that the code will never execute unless it is changed. Such a change can involve moving some lines, deleting a jump or rewriting a conditional statement or loop.

means that the code could execute, but the value of one or more variables prevents it from executing. Such an issue can happen if a flag variable always contains the value False, for example. If the code is later changed so that a new value is being assigned to the variable(s), the code can become reachable again.

How does dead code get injected in programs?

So who writes the dead code? Bad coders, perhaps?

Believe it or not, everyone writes dead code. It happens because of code changes. An old function becomes obsolete, the program is changed to use another class, a constant is replaced by another one etc. These changes occur in time as the software is maintained, fixed and developed further.

Another source of dead code is code reuse. If you copy or link existing modules into a new program, you often include useless parts as well. The new program may not be reusing all of the old functionality, just a part of it.

What’s so nasty about it is that the dead code accumulates without anyone really noticing it. When you discard a function or a class, you should either delete it, move it to a backup location, comment it out or exclude it by a conditional compilation directive. How many of us really do that? Even if we notice a function is now dead, do we actually do something about it? It gets worse as we don’t always notice that our code just became out of use. We can’t take action if we don’t notice what’s happening.

That’s why dead code keeps accumulating. Dead code may account for 30-40% of the size of an old program. A typical value is 15%.

When to be concerned about dead code?

Dead code removal is a good idea when your program is stable. When you’re working hard on it, the «deadness» is constantly changing. We suggest you finish your work first, then clean it up.

There are certain good times to clean up your code.

How do I detect and remove dead code?

Manual code review

You can conduct a manual code review of your system. For each file, class, module and interface, list where it is being used. Each part for which a use location is not found is a candidate for removal. As a by-product, you get a useful list of dependencies.

You can also do the same for each function, variable, constant and so on. This can get tiresome in a large program. Fortunately, there are automated tools to help you out.

Automated code review tools

An inspects your program to find unused parts. It works by recording each use of each programming object. After recording, it produces a listing of the parts for which use was not found. If the tool is good enough, it provides an option to delete or comment out the code automatically.

It is important for such a tool to be reliable. As the output of the tool is used to delete source code, it needs to produce accurate results. A false alarm may lead to the deletion of good code. Because of this, the tool needs to read the entire source code and properly interpret every single part of it. Missing just one use location can result in declaring half of the program as unused.

An example shows us what the tool needs to be aware of. Suppose two classes, A and B, both having a method named M. The tool must be sophisticated enough to tell when syntax such as «p.M» refers to M in class A, when it’s M in class B and when it can be either. Thus, it needs to know p’s data type. In fact, it needs to know all possible data types of p for polymorphic calls. Simply looking for all occurrences of the name M is not enough.

If you’re working with Visual Basic (or VB.NET or VBA), you can use our Project Analyzer to detect and even remove dead code. Project Analyzer shows how much dead and semi-dead code there is and where. Utilizing advanced analysis techniques and an extensive rule base tuned for Visual Basic, VB.NET and VBA, Project Analyzer can reliably detect dead code from live code. The analysis works reliably also with the most complex code that utilizes object-oriented techniques and late binding.

Beware of bad tools

A bad approach to dead code detection is a run-time analysis that logs all calls when the program executes. After execution, a list of the unused parts is built. While this appears to produce a dead code list, it only produces a list of potentially dead code. The program may not have executed all the lines under all possible conditions. Thus, some live code was most probably not executed and the dead code list includes code that executes during another run. What is more, compile-time requirements are not detected. Such requirements can be the use of constants, user-defined data types, class data types and interfaces. Run-time analysis has its uses in performance optimization and testing, but it’s not perfect for dead code detection.

Since dead code detection is a delicate process that requires absolute certainty of the deadness status, developers should only use a tool specifically designed to read source code to find the unused parts. Project Analyzer is such a tool.
