How to use two-step verification with your Microsoft account

Did you know you can increase the security of your account by removing your password and signing in with a passwordless method instead? How to go passwordless with your Microsoft Account.

About two-step verification

What two-step verification is

Two-step verification helps protect you by making it more difficult for someone else to sign in to your Microsoft account. It uses two different forms of identity: your password, and a contact method (also known as security info). Even if someone else finds your password, they’ll be stopped if they don’t have access to your security info. This is also why it’s important to use different passwords for all your accounts.

Important: If you turn on two-step verification, you will always need two forms of identification. This means that if you forget your password, you need two contact methods. Or if you lose your contact method, your password alone won’t get you back into your account—and it can take you 30 days to regain access. You may even lose access to the account. For that reason, we strongly recommend you have three pieces of security info associated with your account, just in case.

What happens when you turn on two-step verification

If you turn on two-step verification, you’ll get a security code to your email, phone, or authenticator app every time you sign in on a device that isn’t trusted. When two-step verification is turned off, you will only have to verify your identity with security codes periodically, when there might be a risk to your account security.

What you’ll need for set up

Two-step verification begins with an email address (we recommend two different email addresses, the one you normally use, and one as a backup just in case), a phone number, or an authenticator app. When you sign in on a new device or from a new location, we’ll send you a security code to enter on the sign-in page. For more info about the authenticator app, see How to use the Microsoft Authenticator app.

Turn two-step verification on or off

Go to the Security basics page and sign in with your Microsoft account.

Select More security options.

Under Two-step verification, choose Set up two-step verification to turn it on, or choose Turn off two-step verification to turn it off.

Follow the instructions.

Note: As part of setting up this account, you’ll be given a QR code to scan with your device; this is one way we ensure you are in physical possession of the device you are installing the Authenticator app to.

Reset your password when two-step verification is turned on

If you forget your password when you have two-step verification turned on for your account, you can reset your password as long as we have two ways to contact you, like one of the alternate contact email addresses or phone numbers that you used when you turned on two-step verification.

Depending on what security info you have added to your account, this requirement might mean entering a security code from your authenticator app and entering a security code that was emailed to your backup email account.

To reset your password, follow the steps in How to reset your Microsoft account password. Instead of receiving one security code to verify your identity, though, you’ll receive two.

If you’re looking for info about changing, removing, or updating the alternate email address or phone number where you get security codes, follow the steps in either Security info & verification codes or Replace your Microsoft account security info.

Where you can’t use security codes, use app passwords

Some apps (like the mail apps on some phones) or devices (like the Xbox 360) can’t use regular security codes. If you see an “incorrect password” error on an app or device after you turn on two-step verification, but you’re sure your password was correct, that means you’ll need an app password for that app or device.

App passwords are only available if you use two-step verification. If you don’t have two-step verification turned on, you won’t see the App passwords section on the Additional security options page.

Enable two-factor authentication

You can enable two-factor authentication in your account settings. You will need the Yandex Key app, which you can install on an iOS or Android mobile device. You can’t use devices that don’t support this app (like Amazon Kindle Fire).

After you enable two-factor authentication:

All Yandex apps, programs, and services will ask for one-time passwords. You will also need one-time passwords to sign in using social networks or log in to your Mail for domain inbox.

You do not have to enter your username and password if you log in to Yandex using a QR code.

For third-party mobile apps, computer programs, and mail importers, you must use individual app passwords.

Step 1. Confirm your phone number

If you already linked your phone number to your account, the browser will display this number and ask if you want to confirm it or change it. If your current phone number is not linked to your account, you must link it to be able to restore access to your account manually.

To link or confirm a number, request that a code be sent via SMS and then enter it into the form. Once you’ve entered the code correctly, click Confirm to proceed to the next step.

Step 2. Create a PIN code

Think of a four-digit PIN code and enter it for two-factor authentication.

Click Create to confirm your PIN code.

Step 3. Configure Yandex Key

The Yandex Key app is required to generate one-time passwords for you account. You can get a link to the app directly on your phone or you can install it from App Store or Google Play.

If the QR-code cannot be read, click Show secret key in the browser, or on Add it manually in the app. Instead of the QR-code, the browser will display a sequence of characters that must be entered into the app.

When it recognizes your account, your device will request the PIN code you created during step two.

Step 4. Check your one-time password

To make sure that everything is set up correctly, you need to enter a one-time password at the last step. Two-factor authentication will be enabled only after this step is completed.

Enter the PIN code you created during Step 2 into Yandex Key. The app will display your one-time password. Enter it next to Enable and click the button. In some cases, you’ll be asked to enter the password that you used before enabling 2FA.

If you entered the correct data, 2FA will be enabled, and your account will open.

Microsoft account security info & verification codes

Security info confirms your identity

Security info is an alternate contact email address or phone number that you add to your account. If you forget your password, or if someone else is trying to take over your account, we send a verification code to that alternate email or phone number. When you give the code back to us, we know that you’re really you so we can help get you back into your Microsoft account.

We use your security info only to verify your identity if you’re accessing personal information or if we detect a problem with your account.

Note: This article is about security info. If you have lost, forgotten or have other password issues, see Change or reset your Windows password.

Before we start into how to manage your security info, let’s make sure we’ve successfully sent your verification code.

If you’d like to reset your password but the verification code didn’t arrive, see When you can’t sign in to your Microsoft account.

For tips about receiving and using verification codes, please see Troubleshooting verification code issues.

Manage your security info

On your Advanced security options page, you can review existing sign-in methods or add a new way to sign in or verify.

Expand a section to learn how to add or remove a way to sign in.

Select Add a new way to sign in or verify then choose how you would like to receive security codes.

We’ll send a security code to confirm. Enter that code when prompted and then select Next.

That’s it. Next time you need a sign-in verification code, you will see the new option listed.

Make sure the list of phone numbers or email you use to sign in to your account is up to date. Open your Sign-in options to turn off sign-in preferences for any phone number or email you don’t use often

You don’t need to remove old security info unless there is an account security risk (e.g. someone else has access to your old mailbox).

If you do need to replace your security info, make sure you add new info first.

If you request removal of all security info in your account, the info doesn’t actually change for 30 days. During this time, we cannot accept further changes or additions to security settings or billing info. Your account is still open and active, and you can still use your email, Skype, OneDrive and devices as usual. We’ll let you know when it’s time to enter new security info. Learn more.

On the Security basics page, select the Update info button. If you’re not already signed in to your Microsoft account, you’ll be prompted to sign in.

You may be asked to enter a verification code to continue. If you don’t have access to your alternate email or phone number, choose I don’t have any of these and follow the instructions to replace your security info.

You’ll see your security info under Security settings. Choose Remove for any you want to remove. You may be asked to add new security info before you can remove the old info.

Troubleshooting verification code issues

There are a number of possible explanations for why verification codes don’t always arrive. Read through the list of the most common causes, and see if any of them apply to you.

Does your phone block texts from unknown numbers?
If so, change your phone settings then choose I don’t have a code. We’ll send another verification code.

Did your email send your verification code to your junk folder?

Check your junk email folder for a message from a Microsoft account, and use the code sent to you. Valid verification codes come from an @accountprotection.microsoft.com email address.

Mark @accountprotection.microsoft.com as a trusted sender to receive your verification code in your inbox.

Is your phone number or email address entered correctly?
To keep your information safe when you’re signing in, we only show you the last two digits of your phone number or the first two characters of your email address.

To see if your security info is correct:

Select Update info.

Choose a method that you know works, or choose I don’t have any of these to replace your security info.

Does your alternate email address end in @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com, or @msn.com?
If so, you’re using one Microsoft account to verify another Microsoft account. This can make it tricky to keep track of which one you’re signed in to. When you sign in to the second account (to get the code sent to that email), most browsers automatically sign you out of the first account (the one that’s actually requesting the code).

To get your verification code:

Using a browser in privacy mode, sign in with the first account. This lets you stay signed in to both accounts at the same time.

When you’re prompted to enter the verification code that was sent to your alternate email address, don’t close the browser window.

Open a new window in privacy mode. Ctrl + Shift + P is the shortcut for InPrivate Browsing in Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer. If you’re using a different browser, check that browser’s help for info about privacy mode.

In the new window, sign in to your alternate email account and look for the message from the Microsoft account team. Copy or write down the verification code from the message.

Return to the window that is asking you for the verification code. Enter the code and follow the instructions.

When you see a message asking you to make sure you can receive a verification code, verify or add new security info. You can skip it for 24 hours at a time, but after seven days from the first notice you’ll have to verify or add new security info before you can sign in again.

Как не дать продавцу «слить» заказ? +

Всем привет! Есть на Али сеть магазинов Jewelrypalace, всего в ней 3 или 4 магазина с разными вариациями названий. Заказала я в этой сети себе кольца. Они типа серебряные с синтетическими камнями, поэтому стоят на порядок дороже обычной бижутерии. В общей сложности, получилось 5 колец.

По 4 кольцам никаких проблем не возникло, треки отслеживаются, одно уже на днях будет у меня. Топаз это мой камень и он меня манит просто к себе. Трек-номер не отслеживается 2 недели и я давно могу вернуть деньги. Продавец явно этого ждет. Видимо, он не хочет по такой цене его продавать. В других магазинах кольцо стоит дороже. Хотя он обещает клятвенно прислать другое, если с этим проблемы не разрешатся:

В чем смысл письма? Сейчас все узнаете.

Первым делом я конечно же обратил внимание, что указана моя почта и указан мой реальный пароль, который я использовал лет 7-8 назад. Но, в этом пароле не хватало одного символа. Это меня немного смутило, тем более, этот простейший пароль был использован для малозначащих сервисов.

Дальше в письме, в стиле статеек из журнала Хакер, идут запугивания, о том, что этот «хакер» взломал мой компьютер и установил на него троян, который постоянно обновляется и наверно, в скором времени накатит для него первый сервис-пак.

Дальше в письме, хакер грозится тем, что он сделал скриншоты, когда я посещал «пикантные сайты» и тем, что он разошлет эти скриншоты чисто поржать всем моим друзьям.

О какой злобный хакер!

Прочитал я это письмо и пошел. нет, не куда подальше, а за хлебом. Походил я еще с час в магазине и вспомнил: хакер же просил не терять времени, а времени у меня 48 часов. Пришел я домой, покушал, посидел пару часов на ютубе и опять вспомнил про хакера. Да нет, не про журнал Хакер, а про их читателя, который настрочил это письмо. Ладно, подумал я, и решил понять, почему и при каких обстоятельствах засветился мой пароль семилетней давности, причем не весь, а только его десять символов (а у меня пароль был более десяти символов).

Первым делом я зашел на сайт Have I Been Pwned и ввел там свой адрес почты:

Ого, оказывается мой Email засветился в утекших базах данных на 4 дырявых сайтах. Листаю ниже:

Первые три сайта я отмел сразу, так как я ими не пользовался, а вот MySpace меня неприятно удивил. Оказывается, еще в далеком 2008 году была утечка данных, при которой утекли данные почти 360 миллионов пользователей. Среди этих данных были адреса электронной почты, имена пользователей и SHA1 хэшей первых 10 символов пароля. И лишь в 2016 году эти данные начали продавать на «Real Deal».

Так вот, откуда была утечка первых десяти символов моего пароля и загадка разгадалась сама собой.

Прошло свыше 48 часов, а этот хакер до сих пор сидит и ждет свои 900 долларов на биткоин-кошелек.

На что рассчитан этот метод развода? На то, что жертва, увидев это письмо в своем ящике, сразу же поддастся панике и заплатит требуемую сумму. И только спустя некоторое время, жертва заподозрит, что ее обманули.

Не поддавайтесь на уловки мошенников и лучше спокойно обдумайте все, спросите совета на форуме и не переводите никому требуемую сумму.

UPD1: Спустя некоторое время, в своем служебном почтовом ящике я обнаружил немного видоизмененное письмо:

В данном случае, недохакер просто наугад разослал письма в надежде на то, что кто-то клюнет на обман.

UPD2: Спустя месяц, пришло еще одно письмо, но уже с несуществующим обратным адресом:

Amazon OTP Not Working? Here’s The Fix! (2022 Guide)

Amazon occasionally requires you to enter in a one-time password (OTP) in order to verify you’re the rightful account owner, and allow you to continue to log in.

This is most common if you’ve enabled two-factor authentication for your account, and you’re attempting to sign in to a new device.

And while this security feature is wonderful for making sure hackers aren’t able to get into your Amazon account, it can be a little bit annoying at times. Especially when the verification code doesn’t seem to be arriving, or doesn’t work correctly when you try to enter it in.

Fortunately, there are some solutions available that can fix this issue. In this article, we’ll go over why the Amazon OTP isn’t working, and what can be done to solve it.

The Two Issues – And How They’re Handled Differently

This guide will cover two types of issues regarding the Amazon OTP.

First, we’ll cover what to do if the one-time password isn’t arriving at all – Amazon isn’t sending you a text message, email or phone call with the code.

Next, we’ll cover what to do if you are receiving the code, but it doesn’t seem to be working. Amazon either says it’s invalid, or rejects it completely.

Finally, we’ll discuss what to do in emergency situations, such as if you no longer have access to the phone or email associated with the account. This section will also cover what to do if no other options are working.

What To Do If The Amazon OTP Is Not Arriving

If Amazon says that they’ve sent you the code and it doesn’t seem to be showing up anywhere, don’t worry. This is the most common type of error, and it almost always resolves itself.

1. Try A Different Verification Method

This option isn’t available to everyone, but if you have the ability to receive a OTP using another method, you should try this first.

Amazon may allow up to three different ways to receive one-time passwords. While many people opt to receive them by text message, you may also have the ability to choose to receive the code by email, or to receive an automated phone call with the code.

Often times, the OTP not arriving is due to a temporary hiccup with Amazon’s system. It could be overwhelmed, or just not working for whatever reason.

Therefore, trying out a different method may solve the problem.

Once you’re back in, you may consider using an authenticator app rather than relying on Amazon themselves to send you a code, as authenticator apps may be more reliable.

2. Try A Different Browser Or Device

If this doesn’t work, you should try signing in from a different internet browser, or even a different device entirely.

For example, if you are trying to log in on desktop, you could try signing in using the Amazon app on your phone or tablet.

In fact, if you’ve used these devices before there’s a chance you may not even need a OTP to sign in – you could complete your order on your phone instead. By the time you need to shop on Amazon again, the problems with the OTPs may already be solved.

If you don’t have another device to use however, you may also try another internet browser. For example, if you originally tried signing in using Google Chrome, try using Firefox instead.

3. Wait 10-15 Minutes

Amazon recommends waiting at least 60 seconds before requesting another code. However, I recommend waiting a little bit longer.

Amazon states that codes can take up to 10 minutes to arrive, in rare circumstances. If you request a new code straight away, there’s a chance it could be the FIRST code that actually comes through to you.

When you try to enter it in, it will no longer be valid, and Amazon will claim it’s incorrect (as they’re now looking for the new code you requested.)

This leaves you at risk of being locked out of your account for 30 minutes, which is what happens if you enter the code incorrectly too many times.

Therefore, by taking a break and waiting 10-15 minutes, you reduce the likelihood of this happening.

4. Ensure Your Phone Is Able To Receive The OTP

This one may seem a little silly, but it’s happened to all of us at one point or another!

Sometimes, not receiving the code simply comes down to user error. For example, accidentally putting your phone into airplane mode, or moving into an area where you don’t have proper data signal.

These type of things would prevent all texts from coming through, not just Amazon’s temporary passwords.

Therefore, make sure your phone is able to receive text messages or calls. If you’re unsure, ask someone in your household to call your phone to verify.

If none of these options work, don’t worry! We’ll cover a guaranteed solution towards the end of this article.

What To Do If The Provided OTP Isn’t Working

Next, let’s cover what to do if a OTP does arrive, but it’s being rejected by Amazon when you try to enter it.

1. Clear Your Browser’s Cache, Or Try A Different Browser / Device

Amazon recommends clearing your browser’s cache if the code doesn’t seem to be working.

Alternatively, you can try using a different browser entirely, or even a different device.

2. Try Submitting The Code Again

Amazon recommends that you try submitting the same code again, but in my experience this isn’t always a good idea.

Amazon only allows you to try a couple of times before locking you out of your account for 30 minutes. Personally, I have found it better to wait a few minutes, request a new code, and then try that one.

Of course, if you believe you may have just made a typo, then feel free to enter the same code (corrected this time, of course!)

3. If You’ve Requested Multiple Codes, Wait Before Trying Again

This is a common problem, that can be really frustrating to handle.

If you’ve requested multiple codes out of frustration, Amazon will only accept the most recent one that they’ve sent. The problem is, they don’t always arrive in the right order, especially if you request several of them right after another.

This means it’s possible you’d enter in an old code, which Amazon would reject.

Therefore, waiting a period of time (10-15 minutes) before requesting a new code can help ensure that the system doesn’t get the two codes mixed up, and you actually end up entering in the right one.

What To Do If Nothing Else Works

If you’ve tried all of the advice mentioned above and it still doesn’t end up working, your only option left is to contact Amazon support.

I had to do this myself when I no longer had access to the phone number that was tied to my Amazon account. The whole process only took about 10 minutes, and wasn’t as big of a deal as I thought it was going to be.

In the past, I was able to talk with someone on the phone, who verified information that was tied to my account, essentially to make sure that I was the true account owner. After they were done, I was able to log in again and update my information.

It seems however that this is no longer the case.

Per Amazon’s help documents (located here), you can verify account ownership by uploading a copy of your legal ID, which Amazon will then verify. The entire process takes 1 to 2 days, and if everything is approved you should be able to recover your account.

This is a little bit irritating, but it’s a necessary step to ensure nobody’s able to bypass Amazon’s security systems and compromise people’s accounts.

If you share your Amazon account with a member of your household, you should try to verify it with the ID of the true account owner.

Conclusion

One-time passwords are the sort of thing that we just kind of expect to work all the time. Since they can already be kind of an annoyance to begin with, it is even more frustrating when they don’t even work properly.

Fortunately however, Amazon OTPs work the overwhelming majority of the time, and any hiccups or issues are usually temporary. Try out some of the fixes mentioned in this article, and hopefully you’ll be able to get back into your account quickly.

If there is truly an issue with Amazon’s system, it should be fixed quite quickly regardless, and you should be able to log back in soon.

If for whatever reason it doesn’t work, recovering your account using Amazon’s verification system is proven to work.

Так что этот «Хуиуи» как я его прозвала, очень странный. Вам-то он хоть отвечает, попробуйте припугнуть, что намерены спор открыть.

Заказала на пробу бижутерию из так называемого китайского снребра.заказ на 3$. По треку пишет что контрольная сумма чего то там, код поддельный. Пишу проду проверте типо. Он мне честно так отвечает ‘т.к. сумма заказа меньше 30$ мы его отправилили хз какой то почтой. А трек да, липовый. Пойми и жди. ‘И смайлик в конце влепил. Даже улыбнуло:-)

@Karrin — Try to figure out what is triggering your Facebook account to be getting locked. As for the confirmation code, if done right, it should be a one-time procedure unless you change device or something within your account setting.

You can send us screenshot of the issue or error message you’re getting on Facebook and we can look into the problem for you.

That said, try to be optimistic, exhibit more patience and you may soon figure it all out by yourself!

Well, I’m still locked out of my account. It’s been almost a week now. I try to login, they send a code to my phone, I type the code in and click submit and it just reloads the page again asking for the code. If I click continue, it tells to to confirm the code, which just results in that same page reloading. I have tried on my laptop, on my phone and using touch.facebook.com Nothing works. I am being locked out of my account, which I use for work, for no reason. There must be something else triggering your account to be getting locked for security reasons. Maybe you often login to your FB account from unrecognized devices?

Thanks for the reply. Well yes, I may well login from 2 different devices, or even locations. But as long as I can confirm that it is me that should not really matter. Surely that is the point of the security options? I often use a VPN on my browser too since it is work and I prefer to keep things encrypted and I prefer to keep the page logged in from a particular location, you know? I suspect that if the VPN drops out, that is the issue. The Facebook algorithm or robots cannot understand how I can be logged in from place A and then a few minutes later in place B. However, I still maintain that if I can answer the security issues, I should be allowed back in. The Algorithm should allow for VPNs.

I should add that I try every day, on a couple of different platforms each day, and the same problem happens. It doesn’t matter how many times I enter the correct code, the one which is texted to me, it just reloads the same page and keeps asking me to enter the code.

I’m going about two days. Facebook sent me an email that they could not confirm I was the owner of the account. I have an extremely unique maiden name. I even sent an email to the help desk. I haven’t heard back. I opened a new account. But, hoping to get in my old account. Is there a wait limit? Like a 24 hour wait? My business is linked to my old account. Self employed. I have father and mother as friends and they have passed. Along cousins and friends. Along with many memories. So, even though everyone says just open a new account. Logging in with two-factor authentication

If you enabled two-factor authentication, you can log in to any Yandex service or app using a one-time password. If you added several accounts to Yandex Key, don’t forget to switch to the correct account before entering your PIN code. You can also log in to some Yandex services using a QR code.

App passwords are used to log in to third-party apps and programs (mail clients, messengers, mail importers, and so forth).

Logging in to a Yandex service or app

You can use one-time passwords to log in to Yandex services and apps.

To get a one-time password, launch Yandex Key and enter the PIN code that you created when setting up 2FA. The app will start generating passwords every 30 seconds.

Yandex Key will not verify that the PIN code you entered is correct: it will generate one-time passwords even if you enter the incorrect PIN code. In this case, the generated passwords will also be invalid, and you won’t be able to log in with them. To enter the correct PIN code, you just have to exit the app and launch it again.

Logging in with a QR code

Some services (such as the Yandex homepage, Yandex.Disk, and Yandex.Mail) allow you to sign in to Yandex by simply pointing your camera at a QR code. Your mobile device must be connected to the internet so that Yandex Key can connect to the authentication server.

To log in with a QR code:

Click the QR code icon in the browser.

If there is no such icon, then you can only log in to this service with a password. In this case, you can log in to your account with a QR code and then go to the service you need.

Yandex Key detects the QR code and sends your username and one-time password to Yandex ID. If they pass verification, you will log in automatically in your browser. If the password you sent turns out to be incorrect (for example, as a result of entering the wrong PIN code in Yandex Key), then the browser will display the standard error message that you entered an incorrect password.

Logging in with Yandex ID to a third-party app or website

Transferring Yandex Key

You can assign the generation of one-time passwords to another device or configure Yandex Key on multiple smartphones at the same time. There are two ways to do this:

Use the backup copy of your data.

Multiple accounts in Yandex Key

The same Yandex Key app can be used for multiple accounts that use one-time passwords. To add another account to the app, click on step 3 of setting up one-time passwords. You can also have Yandex Key generate passwords for other services that support two-factor authentication. Instructions for most popular services can be found on the Generate verification codes for non-Yandex services page.

To remove an account from Yandex Key, tap and hold the corresponding icon in the app until an X appears to its right. When you tap on the X, that account will no longer be linked to Yandex Key.

Fingerprint instead of PIN code

If your device has a fingerprint scanner, you can use your fingerprint instead of a PIN code. You can replace a PIN code with a fingerprint on:

Smartphones running on Android 6.0 and higher.

iPhone starting with model 5s.

iPad starting with model Air 2

To enable fingerprint scanning:

Select the account you need.

Enable Fingerprint (for Android) or Touch ID (for iOS).

Master password

With a master password you can:

Make it so that instead of a fingerprint, you just have to enter the Yandex Key master password and not the device lock code.

Save your Yandex ID PIN code in the app so that you don’t have to enter it every time you need a new one-time password.

Backup of Yandex Key data

You can create a backup copy of your Yandex.Key data on the Yandex server so that you can transfer it to another device or restore it if you lose your phone or tablet.

To get data from a backup copy, you need the following:

Access to the phone number that you used when creating the copy.

The password that you entered to encrypt the backup copy.

Data from all the accounts that you had on Yandex.Key when you did the backup is copied to the server. It’s not possible to create more than one backup copy; each subsequent copy of data for a specific phone number will replace any previous ones.

You can’t delete a backup from the Yandex server yourself. It is deleted from the Yandex server automatically if you do not use it for more than a year.

Create a backup copy

Select Create a backup copy in the app settings.

Think up a password for encrypting the backup copy of your data. You can’t restore this password, so make sure that you don’t forget or lose it.

Restore access from your backup copy

Select Restore access from your backup copy in the app settings.

If a backup copy of that Yandex.Key data is found for the number you enter, Yandex will send a confirmation code to that number. As soon as you receive the code, enter it in the app.

Enter the password you entered when you created the backup copy. If you don’t remember it, you can’t unencrypt your backup copy, unfortunately.

Yandex Key will decrypt your backup and let you know that your data was restored.

How your exact local time is used when generating one-time passwords

Yandex Key takes into account the current time and time zone set on your device when it generates one-time passwords. When an internet connection is available, the app also requests the exact time from the server. If the device’s time is set incorrectly, then the app will correct it. Please note that in some situations, even after the app makes a correction and the correct PIN code is entered, the one-time password will be incorrect.

If you’re sure that you entered your PIN code and password correctly, but you can’t log in:

Make sure that you have the correct time and time zone set on your device. Then try logging in with a new one-time password.

Connect your device to the internet so that Yandex Key can get the exact time on its own. Then restart the app and try entering your new one-time password.

Your WordPress.com site is your home on the internet, and you want to keep that home safe. Hopefully, you’ve already chosen a unique and hard-to-crack password for your account. To add another layer of home security, you can enable two-step authentication.

What is Two-Step Authentication?

Two-step authentication is a method of securing accounts requiring that you not only know something (a password) to log in but also that you possess something (your mobile device or a physical key). The benefit of this approach to security is that even if someone guesses your password, they need to have also stolen your possession in order to break into your account.

At WordPress.com, we offer two-step authentication via mobile device and physical security key. We first verify your mobile device by sending a code via one of a couple of methods. Once you’ve verified your mobile device, you can also add authentication that uses a physical key instead.

Once you’ve set up two-step authentication, any time you log in with your password, we send a new code to your device which you must input, or you have to plug in your physical key before logging in. It adds a small extra step to the login process but makes your account much more secure.

Setup with an Authenticator App

To set up two-step authentication via an authenticator application like Google Authenticator, Authy, or Duo on your device, you’ll need to start in a desktop browser.

First, go to your Two-Step Authentication settings page at WordPress.com.

Here you’ll be prompted to select your country and to provide your mobile phone number (without country code and spaces or dashes). After doing so, click Verify Via App.

Next, scan the QR code presented with your authenticator app. A six-digit number will appear in the authenticator app. Enter it in the field provided and click Enable.

Lastly, you’ll be prompted to print backup codes. Don’t skip this step, as it’ll be your only way to log back into your account without staff assistance should your device go missing!

Please Note: If your web browser is set to block pop-up windows, you may need to temporarily disable this feature as it will prevent the window with your backup codes from opening.

Click All Finished.

At this point, your site is enabled for two-step authentication. A follow-up step allows you to confirm that your backup codes work by entering one of the printed codes.

Setup with SMS Codes

If you’re unable to set up two-step authentication using an authenticator app, you can also set it up to work via SMS messages. To do so, set up your phone number as described above, but then click Verify via SMS.

Within a few moments, you should receive a text message that includes a 7-digit number. Enter this number in the blank provided and click Enable.

From this point forward, you can print and verify backup codes as documented above. Your account is now protected by two-step authentication.

Smartphone apps that block automated calls might also block our messages.

Security Key Authentication

WordPress.com supports login verification with physical security keys using the WebAuthn standard.

Instead of typing in a code you get via SMS or an app like Google Authenticator after entering your password, you plug in a physical key. You then press a button on that key to complete verification and log in. Without that physical key it is impossible for anyone to log into your account, even if they know the password.

Requirements

Add a Key

Note: you need to follow the steps above to enable two-step authentication via SMS or an authenticator app before you can add a security key.

After setting up two-step authentication with an app or SMS, you’ll see the option to add a security key. Click on Register key.

We allow you to register multiple keys so you can name your key to distinguish it from others you might add in the future. Type in a unique name and click Register key.

At this point, plug your key into a USB port on your computer and, depending on the type of key, either press the button or tap the gold disc on the key.

If you’re successful, you will see a message on the screen and the key will now be listed in the Security Key section.

Once this is set up, you won’t be able to access your account without your key, so treat it the same way as you would the keys to your home or your car – keep it safe!

Also consider adding a second key as a backup option and keep it somewhere that you will be able to find it should something happen to your primary key. To add additional keys, just click Register Key again.

Remove a Key

Should you want to remove a security key you added before (for example if a key was lost or no longer works), you can disconnect that key from your account.

Go to the Two-Step Authentication page in your profile settings, click the Trash icon next to the key, and click Remove Key in the confirmation message that will appear.

Logging In

The login process varies slightly from the usual process once you have two-step authentication enabled. Regardless of whether you used the Google Authenticator method or the SMS method to enable two-step authentication, you’ll start by logging in as usual with your username and password.

Next, you’ll be prompted to enter the verification code that was sent to your device.

If you set up two-step authentication with an authenticator app, open the app on your device and provide the six-digit number listed for the account. If you’re using SMS for two-step authentication, we’ll send you a text message with a six-digit number. Once you’ve entered the code, you’ll be logged in and ready to blog.

If you have a security key configured, you’ll see a prompt asking whether you want to verify using your key, or your authenticator app/SMS. To verify using your key, click Continue with security key.

Next you’ll see a prompt to connect your key. Plug the key into a USB port on your computer and, depending on the type of key, either press the button or tap the gold disc on the key to finish logging in.

Note: If you take too long to verify, the verification request will be cancelled and an error message will appear. Just click Continue with security key again to restart the verification.

Backup Codes

We don’t want you to lose access to your WordPress.com account—you’ll still need to be able to log in if it’s is lost, stolen, you’re locked out for any reason, or your device needs to be wiped clean (which will delete Google Authenticator).

To make sure you’re never locked out of your account, you can generate a set of ten one-time-use backup codes. We recommend that you print out the backup codes and keep them in a secure place like a wallet or document safe. (Don’t save them on your computer. They’d be accessible to anyone using your machine.)

Generating backup codes is essential and must be done. If you ever need to use a backup code, just log in like you normally would, and when asked about the login code enter the backup code instead.

At the end of the setup process for Two-Step Authorization, you’ll be given the option to generate backup codes:

Print out the codes—don’t just save it—and confirm that you’ve done that. Then click All Finished! to close that screen.

If you lose your list of backups or it’s compromised, you can generate a new set of codes. For added security, this will disable any previously-generated codes.

You can only generate the backup codes from a desktop browser. For example, Safari on iOS will not display the backup codes. Additionally, if your web browser is set to block pop-up windows, you will need to temporarily disable this feature as it will prevent the window with your backup codes from opening.

Application-Specific Passwords

There may be some apps that connect to your WordPress.com account that don’t yet fully support two-step authentication. The most common are Jabber apps used to subscribe to WordPress.com blogs. For these apps, you can generate unique passwords for each application (e.g., you can have a different password on your phone and your tablet). You can then disable individual passwords and lock applications out of your account to prevent others from accessing your sites.

To generate application-specific passwords, head back to Two-Step Authentication and then down to “Application Passwords”:

Give the application a name—you’re the only one who will see this name, so call it whatever you’d like—and click “Generate Password.” WordPress.com will create a unique 16-character password that you can copy and paste the next time you log in to your account on that device. The application will remember this password so you don’t need to.

Your Security page will maintain a list of all the applications for which you’ve generated passwords. If any of your devices are lost or stolen, or you simply wish to revoke access for a particular application, you can visit this page at any time and click “X” to disable the password and prevent the app from accessing your account:

Disable Two-Step Authentication

We don’t recommend disabling two-step authentication, as it’s much less secure, even if you believe your password is very strong. But if you insist, you can disable the feature by going to your Two-Step Authentication page.

The page will show that the feature is enabled, and you can click the Disable Two-Step Authentication button. This will prompt you to enter a code to confirm that you still have access to the device you originally used to set up two-step authentication. If you’re using an authenticator app, open it and provide the code it lists. If you’re using SMS, you’ll be sent a code to use. (This code is different from the code you used to log in to your account. You can also use one of your backup codes for this step.)

Click Disable after entering the code and your account will no longer be protected by two-step authentication.

Note: A security key cannot be used to disable two-step authentication – this can only be done using a code received via SMS, your authenticator app, or a backup code.

Moving to a New Device

If you are planning on switching to a new device, and you have enabled two-step authentication, you will want to take the following steps to avoid being accidentally locked out of your user account.

If you are using SMS to receive authentication codes, you will not need to update your settings unless you are also changing to a new phone number. In that case, you will want to set up a new recovery number prior to disconnecting your old SMS number by following the steps here.

If You Lose Your Device

If you lose your device or security key, accidentally remove the authenticator app, or are otherwise locked out of your account, the only way to get back in to your account is by using a Backup Code.

To use a backup code, fill in your login details like you normally would. When asked about the login code enter the backup code instead. Remember: backup codes are only valid for one time each so be careful when using them.
