ETHNO WORLD 6 Complete is the summit of a library that has continuously been growing and improving for over 16 years. In this sixth edition, 80 new instruments and voices with a volume of 13 gigabytes have been added to the library.
ETHNO WORLD 6 Complete now consists of 320 instruments and voices, with roughly 800 patches. For the most authentic sound, the instruments have been recorded with different play techniques that can easily and precisely be accessed from the patches via key-switches. The library consists of 33.4 gigabytes (uncompressed) of sample data and 28,789 samples. All instruments come in 24 bit and 44.1 kHz.
Over 70 musicians and singers from all over the world were involved in the recording process, conducted by music-producer Andreas Hofner. The recordings took place in different local studios with the use of first-class gear such as microphones by Neumann and Brauner, SPL preamplifiers and converters by RME.
ETHNO WORLD 6 Complete comprises an incredible spectrum of instruments and voices from the most diverse regions of Asia, Africa, Europe, North- and South-America. Here, you will find the fitting instruments and voice-recordings for folkloric, ethnic as well as for modern music.
INSTRUMENTS
The library contains an extensive selection of stringed, plucked and bowed instruments, as well as the most different woodwinds including numerous flutes and, of course, a large selection of drums and percussion
Almost all sections of the predecessor have been expanded once again. In addition, a couple of instruments of ETHNO WORLD 5 have been re-recorded. Among them is a new mandolin and a great sounding banjo, programmed with countless articulations and licks by one of Germany’s best banjo-players, Rüdiger Helbig.
Furthermore, you will now find a concertina, an autoharp, a Japanese koto, the aforementioned new mandolin with multiple play styles, a South-American charango, a bansuri, bass quena and an Indian flute plus additional play styles for the instruments launeddas, mancosedda, dvojacka and the Irish traverse flute.
VOICES
ETHNO WORLD 6 Complete offers extensive solo-voices, phrases and choirs from Cameroon, Guinea, China, Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria, Northern Africa, Spain and Ukraine. The voices and choirs have been expanded by new contributions from Africa, Arabia, Jamaica and India. For example, the Houari Algerian rai singer is not only perfect for creating authentic atmospheres but also for EDM and Hip-Hop.
Equally extraordinary are the Mongolian overtone singings, the voices of the Chinese opera, Arabian, Indian and African choirs and solo-voices as well as the chants of American natives. Thus, there is a versatile choice of voices for the wide range of film-scoring, ethnic- or traditional music and also for modern music productions.

ETHNO WORLD 6 Complete contains all sounds of the previous versions, categorised in “Bowed Instruments”, “Stringed Instruments”, “Woodwind & Brass”, “Key Instruments”, “World Drums”, “World Percussion” and “Gongs, Bells & Metals” and “Voices”.
A good number of special instruments were additionally recorded for version 6. Among them is the new “Gamelan” category. The instruments were recorded in Munich’s Stadtmuseum and contain two different gamelan orchestras from Bali and Java, available in slendro, pelog and international tunings. Here, you will find more than 25 instruments such as kempli, kendhang drums, cheng cheng, bells, kecer cymbals, kethuk and kempiang.
These instruments are complemented by a harmonically ideal matching Balinese female singer, the typical suling flute and the siter harp. ETHNO WORLD 6 Complete therefore offers the largest orchestral setup of gamelan instruments from Indonesia.
ETHNO WORLD 6 Complete also unlocks an entire new region by offering a complete ensemble of alpine folk music including plucked instruments, brass as well as male and female yodelers. Find instruments like the Styrian harmonica, a nylon stringed concert guitar, zither, raffele, dulcimer, alpenhorn, flugelhorn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, folk-violin and two clarinets. And of course it includes an acoustic bass.
For historical contexts, such as historic dramas and fantasy movies, ETHNO WORLD 6 Complete offers a large selection of medieval instruments, among them a hurdy gurdy, renaissance lute, fife, doucaine, shawm, pasalterium, pump organ and a shruti box. In short: all instruments needed for songs about fire and ice.

THE INTERFACE
ETHNO WORLD 6 Complete uses the free Kontakt 5 Player by Native Instruments as its sample-engine and can of course be used with the full version of Kontakt 5, too. For the new version, the user-interface’s graphic has completely been redesigned and optimized for ultra fast access. There are numerous editing possibilities as well as innovative functions. ETHNO WORLD 6 Complete supports the Native Kontrol Standard (NKS), which allows tagging and interaction with the NI Komplete Kontrol keyboards and NI Maschine.
Further additions are a new waveform display, visualization of the sample-start-offset as well as a clearer use of the effects where, among other features, delay times are now displayed in tempo-related note values and milliseconds. The Timemachine (TM PRO) delivers significantly improved audio results with tempo adapted material, especially for polyphonic licks and loops.
And this is not only a benefit for the latest sounds of ETHNO WORLD 6 Complete but also for all sounds of ETHNO WORLD 5 which were completely revised in this regard. At the same time, the number of patches has been reduced leading to a clearer menu structure.
Thanks to the integrated convolution reverb, all instruments and voices sound exceptionally realistic and natural. Solo instruments additionally offer a high-quality legato mode. Plus, the humanize mode will play each new note with a slightly changed timbre. The micro-tuning allows the use of multiple ethnical tunings and scales. By using top-quality filters, LFOs, tune, automation, harmonizer and further effects, all instruments and voices can be efficiently edited and manipulated if needed, allowing to create new sonic worlds equally suited for modern music genres and film productions.
A unique feature of ETHNO WORLD 6 Complete is the integrated IDB-INFO (Information Database), being directly available from every instrument and voice. Via the menu entry «IDB-INFO», you can access photos of the instruments as well as many details about their original play techniques and tunings, origin and variations. You will also find notes on how to use key-switches, achieving realistic results with the corresponding instrument.

excerpt
All in all there is 33.4 GB containing almost 30,000 samples. With a new reverb everything sounds as it should and all you need is a decent amount of time to glance through the endless number of instruments, voices, loops and phrases. They are exotic, inspirational and very useful. Ethno World library has been my secret weapon for many years. Endless number of wind and string instruments along with all the others can keep you happy for a long time. Not that you will use it constantly, but Ethno World 6 is like one of those mystical life-saver cures that come in small bottles (OK, this one is far from being small). A drop here and a drop there and your life (songs) will become better. Ethno World 6 sounds exotic, and yes, this is a fact – it really is exotic. In the best possible way.
ESSENTIAL for: A soup without salt is just water, and a song without small addition of Ethno World 6 element is just a song. Having just a song is definitely not enough for success.

EW 6 ANR 03/2017
This library has blossomed over the years into a huge compendium of more unusual instruments. In terms of instruments and vocal sample variety, this library has no competition. I was extremely impressed with the sheer volume of sounds that caught my ear. The gamelan orchestra, in particular, is extremely playable, is recorded beautifully, and just straight up sounds exotic in timbre. I would say that if you’re serious about composing for media, this library is a must-have. You can’t go wrong.
The micro tuning tab I found added nicely to the authenticity of the sound. There are presets, so you can adjust the tuning to move away from western tuning and fit the geographical region more effectively. Ethno world is now NKS compatible too – so you can find your way around each instrument more quickly.

Ultimately, this is a fairly expensive library but one that is classy enough to justify itself to discerning composers of world or new age music, or anyone in search of deluxe exotica.
This latest edition of Marcel Barsotti’s Ethno World is subtitled Professional & Voices, and it brings voices and choirs to the mix. It adds 15 categorised folders (199 patches) to the existing ethnic instrument package of over 600 patches across ten categories. As a whole, Ethno World now covers massive ground, including stringed, wind, keyed and percussion instruments from around the globe, as well as newly recorded solo voices and an ethnic chamber choir.
The `ethnic` tag denotes both the source and intended application of the library. However, in use, you’ll find much of the instruments section simply grouped by type rather than source location, and we had to head to the manual to discover that Saron Gammelan, for example, is from the indonesian island of Lombok. By contrast, and more sensibly, the voice library is more specifically labelled (Bulgarian Female Voices, Peruvian Male Voices, European Ethnic Voices, and so on), and this often makes instrument selection quicker.
Also very positive is the implementation of Kontakt 4 features. Not only do you get a fivetab interface (quick edit, effects, group edit, microtuning and performance), but new features include sample start time, legato mode, humanise and use of K4’s Beat Machine and Time Mashine II features to enable loop-by-loop adjustments. Use of these last two is clearly indicated in the patch names (BM or TM) and is a massive bonus for anyone wanting to sync or tweak the many percussion or instrument loops on offer. Also rather useful is the inclusion of separately tabbed effects within the main effects page, and unbelievably for an instrument of this type, resonant low- and high-pass filters with envelopes.
EW5 is not a cheap package (existing users benefit from a competitive upgrade deal), but if you have the time to explore and tweak, there’s a lot here that will appeal to producers working in most musical genres.

Fazit:
Marcel Barsotti continues to enlarge his Ethno World library of exotic instruments, adding 10GB of content to the EW4 library–there are 240 instruments and (new to V5) 25 solo voices; the voices alone add more than 3,800 samples and phrases.
The audio engine, Native Instruments’ Kontakt 4 Player, gets stronger with each release. The Player’s effects are outstanding (love that convolution reverb), as is the flexible routing. You only realize the Player has limitations if you use the full version of K4–with which EW5 is compatible. Also, EW5 skillfully uses K4’s scripting and articulation to provide serious expressiveness, and many files exploit the Beat and Time Machine options.
Instrument categories include bell, bowed, gongs, keyboard, metallic, stringed instruments, woodwind and bass, world drums/percussion, and even construction kits for China and the Mideast. Voices come from literally from all over the world, and the recording quality can’t be faulted.

Plus
•umfangreichste Sammlung ethnischer Instrumente und Stimmen
•authentische Gesangsphrasen aus verschiedenen Ländern
•neue Taiko-Drums mit 16-fachen Layering
•komplett überarbeitetes Benutzerinterface
•viele Loops demonstrieren Spielweise der Instrumente
•Klangqualität
•schön gemachtes Handbuch mit vielen Zusatzinfos
Test: Ethno World 5 Professional & Voices

Very nice sounding sample sets
Inspiring to work with
Both multi-sample and loops/phrases included for each instrument
Scripted legato surprisingly pleasant
IDB info panel for each instrument
No true-legato
Inconsistent levels from one articulation to next
Some presets won’t stand up to premium dedicated world instrument library
Ethno World 6 Complete comes with a huge and diverse collection great sounding ethnic voices and instruments. Despite the lack of true legato and a few inconsistencies, the combination of playable multi-sampled instruments with loops/phrases for each makes this easy to use library, a complete toolkit for bringing world music to life.
Review: Ethno World 6 Complete by Marcel Barsotti
Ethno World 6 Main Interface is very easy to use
Ethno World 6 is the latest update to the Ethno World libraries. Developer Marcel Barsotti has been cultivating the collection of ethnic world instrument for nearly 16 years now. With the latest release, the developer has added 13 GB of new material including 80 new instruments and voices. As you might guess, Marcel is an avid collector of ethnic instruments and also of recording performances by skilled world musicians. For the vocal additions to Ethno World, Marcel has recorded a wide range of solo singers and choirs from varying cultures from around the globe.
Ethno World 6 Complete contains 2 Kontakt Player Instruments, EW6 Instruments & EW6 Voices
Ethno World 6 Complete consists of two a separate Kontakt Player libraries: Ethno World 6 Instruments and Ethno World 6 Voices. Together Ethno World 6 Complete clocks in at 22 GB gigabyte, contains 320 instruments and voices with nearly 800 Kontakt presets. The sample set comes from recording sessions of over 70 musicians and singers.
Thoughts
This review is being published in installments. This first section will cover the Ethno World 6 Instruments, with an update to come that covers the Ethno World 6 Voices.
The instruments contain a range of tempo sync’d performances (loops/phrases) as multi-samplef instruments and instrument effects. The majority of the instruments playback with a very nice presence and liveliness and the inclusion of each instrument as a multi-sample instrument as well as the phrase/loops really allow users to bring their world or ethnic-colored music to life.
The performance tab allows access to legato settings and humanization
Though lacking true legato samples, I was pleasantly surprised to find the scripted legato for the instrument to be quite playable once you assign a MIDI CC and adjust the the other provided parameters. This was especially true for adjusting velocity, legato and humanization.
While reviewing the library I did find inconsistencies from one articulation dynamic level to next. This sometimes would lead to a bit of a jump in dynamics in playback so you’ll probably want to work with some of those performance controls to get the playback to sound more realistic.
Reverb selections and controls
The library comes with a really nice set of IRs. The spaces included were really pleasant and worked well with the instruments I tried adjustments on.
There are a ton of controls and functionality as well as an effects section and I won’t bore you by repeating the manual here so be sure to check out the official videos (below) to learn about all the library has to offer for performance adjustments.
Two big highlights for me with the library are Micro Tuning and the IDB Info Page.
Micro tuning allows the user to tune each note in small increments as well as select/load/save presets for micro-tonal settings. This is incredibly powerful for world instruments and is sure to add to the depth and realism of sound when working on tracks that need that extra push for a more genuine vibe.
Microtunning panel allows for incemental adjustments or loading/saving presets
The second thing on my highlight list is the IDB Info Page. This is a summary “lesson” in world instruments. It contains a photo of the instrument, geographic origins, and construction, as well as an overview for included samples, key ranges and assigned key-switches.
As utilitarian as educational, the IDB-INFO panel is accessable for each instrument
I am really pleased with this collection of instruments. It is very nice to get such a versatile group of world instruments for Kontakt. On the cons, some of these instruments just won’t stand up to the authenticity of a single dedicated premium library, but this collection will give many composers a well-rounded arsenal for both creating world music and adding ethnic flavor to their tracks.
I am looking forward to digging into the second library in the Ethno World 6 Complete, EW6 Voices which will be published in the near future!
As with all of our reviews, please check out the audio and video demos for more in-depth functionality to make sure that this is the right product for you.

The Complete version of Ethno World (reviewed here) combines a 14.9GB Instruments library and 6.53GB Voices library, but either component can be purchased on its own if the other is not required. As for the 6 in the title, that tells us that there have been five previous versions (spanning 16 years), and therefore many opportunities for Best Service to refine the interface design and expand and improve the sound palette.
