Уроки 2010FIFA WORLD CUP. Часть I.

Fifa world cup 2010. Смотреть фото Fifa world cup 2010. Смотреть картинку Fifa world cup 2010. Картинка про Fifa world cup 2010. Fifa world cup 2010

Fifa world cup 2010. Смотреть фото Fifa world cup 2010. Смотреть картинку Fifa world cup 2010. Картинка про Fifa world cup 2010. Fifa world cup 2010

The 2010 FIFA World Cup Final was the final match of the 2010 World Cup, the 19th edition of FIFA’s competition for national football teams. The match was played at Soccer City in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 11 July 2010, and was contested by the Netherlands and Spain. The event comprised hosts South Africa and 31 other teams who emerged from the qualification phase, organised by the six FIFA confederations. The 32 teams competed in a group stage, from which 16 teams qualified for the knockout stage. En route to the final, the Netherlands finished first in Group E, with three wins, after which they defeated Slovakia in the round of 16, Brazil in the quarter-final and Uruguay in the semi-final. Spain finished top of Group H with two wins and one loss, before defeating Portugal in the round of 16, Paraguay in the quarter-final and Germany in the semi-final. The final took place in front of 84,490 supporters, with more than 900 million watching on television, and was refereed by Howard Webb from England.

Sergio Ramos had a chance to score for Spain early in the first half when his shot was saved by Netherlands goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, while Arjen Robben had a chance for the Netherlands when he hit a low shot from the edge of the penalty area shortly before half-time, which was saved by Iker Casillas. There were numerous bookings throughout the first half, which BBC Sport’s Paul Fletcher wrote had «disturbed the rhythm of the match». Robben missed an opportunity in the 62nd minute when he was one-on-one with Casillas, with the goalkeeper able to intercept his attempted shot with the toe of his boot to prevent the goal. David Villa then had a chance for Spain 4 yards (4 m) from the Netherlands goal, but Stekelenburg saved his shot. Ramos missed a header in front of goal on 77 minutes, sending the ball over the crossbar. With the match goalless after 90 minutes, it went to extra time. John Heitinga received a second booking during extra time, which resulted in him being sent off, and four minutes before the end Andrés Iniesta gave Spain the lead, and the title, with a volleyed shot into the corner of the goal to secure a 1–0 win.

Spain’s win was their first World Cup title, as well as the first World Cup win by a European team outside Europe. Iniesta was named the man of the match, while Casillas was awarded the Golden Glove as FIFA’s outstanding goalkeeper of the tournament. Spain went on to win UEFA Euro 2012 for their third successive trophy, but failed to defend the World Cup at the 2014 tournament in Brazil, becoming the second successive World Cup holders to be eliminated in the group phase after defeats against the Netherlands and Chile.

Officials for the 2010 FIFA World Cup are selected from a pool of 30 trios of referees and assistant referees announced by the association football governing body, FIFA, on 5 February 2010. [1] The final cut was selected from a group of 38 referees revealed in October 2008, [2] themselves whittled down from an initial group of 54 selected for the Refereeing Assistance Programme in 2007. [3] From the quarter-finals onwards, the pool of referees was reduced to 19.

Selection process

In 2007, the FIFA Executive Committee set up the Refereeing Assistance Programme (RAP) to help prepare the referees in contention to officiate at the 2010 World Cup; 54 were selected to make up the initial group. Over the following months, they were assessed based on their performances at FIFA tournaments, RAP seminars and in their domestic leagues. [3] In September 2008, 53 of the original 54 referees attended an «Elite Referee» seminar in Zürich, Switzerland, where their technical, physical and mental abilities were analysed. [4] The results were presented to the FIFA Referees’ Committee, who preselected 38 trios of referees and their assistants on 22 October. [2]

From this group of 38, ten trios – representing all six confederations – were selected to referee at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, hosted by South Africa as preparation for the World Cup 12 months later. [5] This assignment was viewed by FIFA as part of the referees’ assessment, to ensure that they are prepared for the technical and physical demands of the World Cup in South Africa. [6]

The final 30 trios of officials were announced at a meeting of the FIFA Referees Committee in Zürich on 5 February 2010. The trios were assessed using the same criteria as for the original cut. [1] Following their selection, each official underwent FIFA’s pre-competition medical assessment (PCMA) at the Schulthess Clinic in Zürich between 25 February and 6 March. [7]

However, on 27 May 2010, two referees – Carlos Amarilla and Mohamed Benouza – and their assistants were removed from the final list, following the assistant referees’ failure in the standard fitness tests, the same tests as those held in Zurich. Uruguayan referee Martín Vázquez and his assistant referees were called up as a replacement trio. [8]

Historical Football Kits

FIFA World Cup

South Africa 2010

The 2010 World Cup, played between 11 June and 11 July, marked the first occasion that the finals have been played on the African continent. Only the host nation received an automatic place in the finals while Italy, world champions in 2006, had to negotiate their way through the qualifying competition.

Puma now supplied twelve African nations, including four qualifiers for this World Cup, with their stunning African Range strips. All twelve used the African Unity strip as third choice although these did not appear in the finals. The blue is inspired by the African sky, the brown supposedly matches soil samples taken from the continent while the gold detailing represents African sunshine.

FIFA regulations required teams to wear kits that provide a high degree of contrast as well as avoiding colour clashes with opponents. Every team was guaranteed to play at least once in their first choice strip. Full details of all variants worn in the tournament are available in the Match by Match Sections. Due to the chilly conditions in which some night games were played, both long and short sleeved shirts were used: long sleeved versions are shown where the entire team turned out in this style.

The South African team (known as Bafana Bafana) faced a difficult task to qualify from a tough group containing three experienced World Cup teams. On paper they were the weakest of the African sides competing in the finals but they could count on passionate (and noisy) home support.

The new «sunshine and twilight green» home kit introduced for 2010 is on the face of it straightforward but closer examination reveals an intricate jacquard pattern woven into the body (representing the national flag) and neat embroidery at the collar and hem of the shorts. The second choice strip is basically a reversal of the «home» kit with the addition of «forest green» trim on the shirts and socks.

Mexico appeared in their fifth consecutive World Cup Finals tournament, their fourteenth in all (more than any other team from the CONCACEF zone). The team initially struggled in the early qualifying games under their coach Sven Goran Erikssen but after he was replaced by former Atletico Madrid coach, Javier Aguirre, they began to play with greater consistency, finishing second in the final qualifying stage behind the USA.

El Tri played in their traditional green shirts and white shorts with red trimmings and chose black as their alternate strip.

Uruguay hosted the first ever World Cup in 1930 and have won it twice, in 1930 and again in 1950. Prior to this they won gold medals in the 1924 and 1928 summer Olympics, which is why four stars appear above the team crest. More recently, La Celeste have struggled and this is only the second time they have reached the finals out of the last five competitions.

The teams traditional colours are sky blue and black. Their Puma strip featured a multi-pointed sun motif from the national flag embossed into the fabric. Early reports that the second choice shirts would be metallic gold appear to be incorrect while the early releases of the home shirt had a red Puma logo.

France’s qualification was marred by the circumstances of the decisive play-off game against the Republic of Ireland, which was settled after Thierry Henry handled the ball on the goal line before passing to William Gallas who scored. The resulting outcry severely damaged the reputation of Henry and of the sport in general.

Les Blues won the World Cup in 1998 and were beaten finalists last time out. Their new strip is a reinterpret ion of the classic 1984 shirt, worn when the team won the European Championship. The classic white change shirt with fine red and blue pinstripes reappears as second choice, embellished with navy and metallic gold trim at collar and cuffs.

Argentina made extremely heavy weather of qualifying, due in no small part to the eccentric selection policy of Diego Maradona, now national team coach, who picked no fewer than 56 players in 2009 alone. Nevertheless Los Albicelestes (sky blue and whites) are considered serious contenders to add a third World Cup to their tally.

The stripes on the new Adidas shirt are officially described as «Colombian Blue». The change strip is, as usual, royal blue (although no doubt Adidas’ marketing people have come up with a more fanciful description) and white and for 2010 features a shadow stripe on the shirts.

It was rumoured at the end of 2009 that the Nigerian Football Federation had rejected Adidas’ new design. This turned out to be untrue as the twilight green strip were made available to the replica kit market at the beginning of 2010. The Eagles finished third in the 2010 African Cup of Nations and were taking part in their fourth World Cup finals campaign.

This is only the second time that Greece have reached the World Cup Finals. Remarkably in their previous appearance, in 1994, they were also drawn in the same group as Argentina and Nigeria.

Greece have traditionally played in blue but after they became surprise winners of Euro 2004, they have worn all-white, the colours worn in the final of that competition, retaining all-blue as their second choice.

With Fabio Capello in charge, England were a team transformed and qualified with some ease, losing just one game.

The all-white strip introduced in 2009 not only recalls the 1970 World Cup finals but also the original colours worn when the first international fixtures were played in the 1870s. The red and white away strip deliberately evokes the 1966 World Cup final.

Having finished as runners-up in the 2009 Confederations Cup (the rehearsal for the World Cup played in South Africa) and qualified with some ease, the Stars and Stripes were in their sixth consecutive World Cup Finals.

The decision to wear a sash was almost certainly inspired by the strip worn in the historic 1-0 win the United States team achieved against England in the 1950 World Cup finals.

The home strip appeared at the end of April and is white with a silver sash. The main colour of the second choice kit is described as «obsidian,» a shade familiar to Arsenal supporters.

The Slovenian FA was formed in 1991 after the country broke away from Yugoslavia and their team appears in the World Cup Finals for the second time.

The team normally wear white with dark green trim. Their new strips featured a jagged band across the chest that represents Mount Triglav (Three Heads Mountain), the highest peak in the country. The lime green that features on the emblem of the FA of Slovenia and in the second choice strip represents the lipa (lime tree), a national emblem.

The formidable Germans have reached the World Cup final seven times, a record shared with Brazil, and have been champions three times (FIFA considers the West German team that competed between 1950-1990 as a continuation of the united Germany team).

As usual Adidas have designed a stylish variation on the traditional white shirts and black shorts, featuring a pair of narrow vertical stripes in red and gold on the left side of the chest and metallic gold trim on the socks. The crest of the Deutscher FuГџball-Bund also appears in gold against a black background.

The black second choice shirts may strike many as an unhappy choice: they are based on the colours worn when a German select XI played an unofficial international in Paris in 1898.

Frequently (but incorrectly) referred to as «Holland,» the Dutch team are associated with the brilliant Total Football side, led by Johan Cruyff in the 1970s when they reached two World Cup finals. Although they have remained a strong team ever since (they are ranked third in the world by FIFA at the time of writing), their only success has been a European Championship in 1988.

The new Dutch home strip was launched in April 2010. The new «away» kit features striking chevrons (repeated on the back of the socks) in the national colours.

Winners of Euro 92, the Danes have been present in only two of the four World Cup final staged since then. Their traveling fans are called roligans, known for their peaceful but passionate support (rolig = calm).

Danish teams play in the national colours of red and white, currently with an intricate white band across the chest on the first choice strip. This is absent from the second strip, which has, as usual, the colours reversed. The shorts and socks are interchangeable.

Japan are currently one of the leading teams in Asia, having won the Asian Cup three times and qualifying four the last four World Cup finals. They have no official nickname but are sometimes referred to, rather lugubriously, as Soccer Nippon DaihyЕЌ (Japanese representatives of soccer). More recently the term Samurai Blue has come into common use.

The team’s first choice strip is in traditional deep blue with a red block at the collar. The national flag appears above the crest of the Japan Football Association. The second choice simply reverses the theme so all elements can be interchanged.

The exploits of the Cameroon team in the 1982 and 1990 World Cup finals served notice that African teams could challenge the leading sides from South America and Europe, paving the way for an increase from two to three African qualifiers. Les Lions Indomptables (The Indomitable Lions) have appeared regularly in the finals ever since (although they missed out on the 2006 tournament) and have won the African Cup of Nations four times.

Cameroon have in the past fallen foul of FIFA with sleeveless and one-piece playing kits but their new Puma African strips avoid further controversy. The lion motif appears as an additional crest and as a jacquard print on the green first choice shirts while interesting paint-effect» stripes decorate the yellow second-choice top. The team habitually switch their shorts and socks to avoid clashes with opponents.

Italy are holders of the FIFA World Cup and have won the competition four times, making them second only to Brazil in the history of the competition. They team are known as Azzuri after the colour of their shirts, which are taken from the colours of the Royal House of Savoy under whom Italy was unified in 1861.

The Italians can usually be relied upon to wear stylish outfits and the sets unveiled for 2010 are no exception. The first choice strip is in traditional azzuri blue, a shade lighter than usual and features a dramatic jacquard print on the front and back of the shirt. Although traditionally Italy wear white shorts, they have opted for blue this year, which is what they wore when they won in 2006.

This is the eighth time that Paraguay have reached the final stage of the World Cup. They appear to have made considerable progress in recent years, becoming the second team to qualify from the CONMEBOL zone, ahead of Argentina, Colombia and Chile.

Paraguay’s traditional colours are red and white striped shirts and blue shorts, taken directly from the national flag.

Despite having many amateur players, association football struggles for attention and resources against the two rugby codes in New Zealand. A semi-professional football league only started in 2004 and the country’s single fully professional team plays in the Australian A League. Qualifying for the World Cup finals for the second time in their history is therefore something of an achievement.

The team are known as the «All-Whites» to distinguish them from the illustrious national rugby union team and because that’s what they play in. When a change is required the Kiwis turn out in black.

The Slovakian team played its first international in February 1994 after the break up of the former Czechoslovakia. They appear in the World Cup finals for the first time in their history although the Czechoslovak team played in eight tournaments and reached the final twice. The team wear the national emblem rather than the badge of the Slovak Football Association.

Brazil are, quite simply the most successful team in the history of the World Cup. Champions five times, they have appeared in every finals tournament. Although the team’s green trimmed gold shirts, blue shorts and white socks have become iconic, they did not appear until March 1954 after the newspaper, Correio da ManhГЈ, ran a competition to design a more patriotic strip to replace the all-blue outfit worn at the time.

Nike have made only changes in the detailing of both first and second choice strips for 2010. The blue second strip has a pattern of fine dots over the body.

No-one old enough to remember the 1966 World Cup finals will ever forget the exploits of the diminutive North Korean team who beat Italy 1-0 to qualify for the quarter-finals where they went 3-0 up against Portugal before conceding five to lose the match.

Although North and South Korea are still technically at war, the teams met in the qualifying competition. The first match was moved to Shanghai after the North Korean government refused to allow the South Korean flag to be flown or the anthem to be played in Pyongyang. After the DPRK team lost the return leg in Seoul their coach accused their opponents of poisoning his team.

The team plays in all-red but the commercial exploitation of replica kits is not a priority in the workers’ paradise and in the few warm up matches they have played in strips by various manufacturers. Against Venezuela they had to borrow a set from the home team after their own were lost in transit. However, HFK has learned that their strips for the finals are supplied by Italian company, Legea.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup Final was a football match that took place on 11 July 2010 at Soccer City in Johannesburg, South Africa, to determine the winner of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Spain defeated the Netherlands 1–0 with a goal from Andrés Iniesta four minutes from the end of extra time. The match was marked by an unusually high number of yellow cards, mostly issued to the Dutch who were criticised for their rough play.

Contents

Finalists

Prior to this game, the Netherlands and Spain had never met each other in the main tournament stages of either a World Cup or a European Championship, the two major tournaments for European international teams. In all-time head-to-head results, the teams had met nine times previously since 1920, winning four games each and drawing once, in either friendlies, European Championship qualifying games, and once in the 1920 Summer Olympics.

Before the match Spain had an Elo rating of 2111 points and the Netherlands a rating of 2100 points. Thus, the finalists combined for 4211 points, by far the highest for any international football match ever played, beating the previous record of 4161 combined points for the 1954 FIFA World Cup Final between Hungary and West Germany.

Route to the final

Spain entered the 2010 World Cup as the reigning UEFA European Football Champions, having won UEFA Euro 2008, and as the shared holders of the international football record of consecutive unbeaten games for a national team, spanning 35 matches from 2007 to 2009; they also won all 10 matches of their qualifying campaign. The Netherlands entered the World Cup having won all eight matches in their UEFA Group 9 qualifying campaign.

Once at the finals in South Africa, the Netherlands reached the knockout stage as winners of Group E, with three wins out of three against Denmark, Japan and Cameroon, conceding only one goal. In the knockout stage, they beat World Cup debutants Slovakia, five-time champions Brazil and two-time champions Uruguay. The Netherlands reached the Final in a 25-match unbeaten streak since September 2008.

In Group H, Spain recovered from a loss to Switzerland in their opening game to beat Honduras and then Chile, finishing top of the group ahead of Chile on goal difference. In the knockout stage, they then beat their Iberian neighbours Portugal, quarter-final debutants Paraguay and three-time World Cup winners Germany. The semi-final was a repeat of the match up for the UEFA Euro 2008 Final, and again saw Spain beat Germany, who were the top scorers of the 2010 tournament up to that point.

In the six games both teams played in South Africa to reach the final, the Netherlands scored a total of twelve goals and conceded five, while Spain scored seven and conceded two. Going into the final, Wesley Sneijder of the Netherlands and David Villa of Spain were tied as the top scorers with five goals each; Arjen Robben of the Netherlands with two was the only other player in the finalists’ squads with more than one goal in the tournament.

Squads

All but three members of the Spanish squad play for clubs in Spain; the other three are based in England. The Netherlands squad draws its players from clubs in five European countries, with just nine based in the Netherlands; six play in Germany, five in England, two in Italy and one in Spain.

Match officials

The referee for the final was Howard Webb, representing The Football Association of England. He was assisted by fellow Englishmen Darren Cann and Mike Mullarkey. Webb was the first Englishman to referee a World Cup final since Jack Taylor officiated the 1974 final between the Netherlands and West Germany.

A police officer from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, 38-year-old Webb is one of the English Select Group Referees, and has officiated Premier League matches since 2003. He was appointed to the FIFA list of international match referees in 2005, and before the World Cup, he had taken charge of the 2010 UEFA Champions League Final and the 2009 FA Cup Final.

At the 2010 World Cup, Webb refereed three games, all with Cann and Mullarkey as his assistants. In the group stage, he refereed the Spain–Switzerland and Slovakia–Italy games, and then took charge of the Brazil–Chile match in the Round of 16. In those three games, he never showed a red card or awarded a penalty, but he did issue the second highest number of yellow cards in the tournament, an average of 5.67 bookings per game. With fourteen yellow cards in the final (one red card to John Heitinga – twice yellow), he easily broke the previous record of six for most cards in a World Cup final, set in 1986. Nine of these Final yellow cards came in the first 90 minutes. Webb’s total of 31 yellow cards throughout the tournament came to an average of 7.75 per game.

Match

Summary

The Final was played on 11 July 2010 at Soccer City, Johannesburg. Spain defeated the Netherlands 1–0, after an extra time goal by Andrés Iniesta. The win gave Spain its first World Cup title. It was the first time since England in 1966 that the winners of the final wore their second choice strip.

The match had the most yellow cards awarded in a World Cup final, more than doubling the previous record for a final, set when Argentina and West Germany shared six cards in 1986. Fourteen yellow cards were awarded, and John Heitinga of the Netherlands was sent off for a second yellow. Nigel de Jong also delivered a studs-up kick to the chest of Xabi Alonso during the first half, but received only a yellow card. Some were of the opinion that the referee should have punished the Dutch player more severely.

The Netherlands had several chances to score, most notably in the 60th minute when Arjen Robben was released by Wesley Sneijder putting him one-on-one with Spain’s goalkeeper Iker Casillas, but Casillas pushed the shot wide with an outstretched leg. Meanwhile, for Spain, Sergio Ramos missed a free header from a corner kick when he was unmarked. With a penalty shootout seeming inevitable, Jesús Navas sprinted into opposing territory and began a series of passes that led to Iniesta finally breaking the deadlock in extra time, scoring a half-volleyed shot after receiving a pass from Cesc Fabregas. Dutch captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst was substituted in the 105th minute by Edson Braafheid ; Real Madrid midfielder Rafael van der Vaart, who came on as a substitute for Nigel de Jong, took over as captain for the last few minutes.

Just before the goal was scored, the Dutch team had a free kick that hit the wall (clearly deflected off Fabregas) before going out. Despite the deflection which should have given possession and a corner kick to the Dutch, a goal kick was given to Spain, starting the play that led to the goal. The Dutch, however, momentarily had possession of the ball near the Spanish penalty area in between the goal kick and Iniesta’s goal. Joris Mathijsen was yellow-carded for his strong protests to the referee after the goal, and other Dutch players criticised Webb for this decision after the match.

As the Spanish team descended the steps onto the pitch after receiving the cup, the Dutch team applauded them from a guard of honour.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2010 FIFA World Cup is the 19th FIFA World Cup, the premier international association football tournament, being held in South Africa from 11 June to 11 July. It is the first time the finals of the tournament have been staged in an African host nation as South Africa were selected as hosts following a bidding in 2004. The impact of the event itself transcend those bound by its athletic aspect and appeal, and the socioeconomic aspects of the tournament are far reaching.

Social effects

Security

Tournament organiser Danny Jordaan dismissed concerns that the attack on the Togo national team which took place in Angola in January 2010, had any relevance to the security arrangements for the World Cup. [1] There have been claims that the police have implemented a de facto state of emergency by banning protests during the event. [2]

Major General Qassim al-Moussawi of Iraq’s security services said the arrest of Abdullah Azzam Saleh al-Qahtani, allegedly a former Saudi army lieutenant, yielded information that «He was planning a terrorist act in South Africa during the World Cup based on plans issued by the central al Qaeda terrorist organisation in coordination with Osama bin Laden’s first assistant, Ayman al-Zawahri.» [3]

There were also reports of thefts against visitors to the country for the World Cup. Tourists from China, Portugal, Spain, South Korea, Japan and Colombia had become victim to crimes. [4] Three members of the Greece national team reported that £1,300 had been stolen from their rooms. [5] These reports came after the British media cautioned visitors about such security threats. [6]

In Iraq, the improved security situation has allowed people to watch matches in public places. This is in contrast to 2006 when violence prevented people from gathering publicly. [7] Radical militant groups in Somalia have banned the watching of televised World Cup matches, and had initially threatened to punish with public floggings, [8] declaring the World Cup a waste of time and resources and un-Islamic. [9] There were reports that groups had arrested people for watching the World Cup. [8] The group denied reports of arresting people, but said that they were chasing people out of video halls. [7]

On 18 June after the match between England and Algeria a fan was able to break through the FIFA-appointed security staff at Green Point stadium and gain access to the England team dressing room. The breach took place shortly after Prince William and Prince Harry had left the room. The trespasser was then released before he could be handed over to the Police. The Football Association lodged a formal complaint with FIFA and demanded that security be increased. [10]

Evictions

Fifa world cup 2010. Смотреть фото Fifa world cup 2010. Смотреть картинку Fifa world cup 2010. Картинка про Fifa world cup 2010. Fifa world cup 2010

As with many ‘hallmark events’ throughout the world, [11] the 2010 FIFA World Cup has been connected to evictions, [12] [13] [14] [15] [16] which many [ who? ] claim are meant to ‘beautify the city’, impress visiting tourists, and hide shackdwellers. On 14 May 2009, the Durban-based shack-dwellers’ movement Abahlali baseMjondolo took the KwaZulu-Natal government to court over their controversial Elimination and Prevention of Re-Emergence of Slums Act, meant to eliminate slums in South Africa and put homeless shackdwellers in transit camps in time for the 2010 World Cup. [17] [18] They have gained a lot of publicity for their efforts, even in the international media. [19] [20] [21] Abahlali baseMjondolo have threatened to build shacks outside of the Cape Town stadium to draw attention to their situation. [22] [23]

Another prominent controversy surrounding preparations for the World Cup is the N2 Gateway housing project in Cape Town, which plans to remove over 20,000 residents from the Joe Slovo Informal Settlement along the busy N2 Freeway and build rental flats and bond-houses in its place in time for the 2010 World Cup. [24] The residents would be moved to the poverty stricken Delft township on the outskirts of the city and out of sight from the N2 Freeway. [25] [26] [27] There has been particular concern about forced removals to the Blikkiesdorp camp in Delft and that in Durban, children are being forcibly removed from the city centre. [28] [29]

In July 2009, South Africa was hit with rolling protests by poor communities that demanded access to basic services, jobs, adequate housing and the democratisation of service delivery. These protests have been linked to the World Cup as protesters complain that public funds are being diverted away from social issues to build stadiums and upgrade airports. [30] [31] Fears have been expressed that the growing protests by shack dwellers could result in the tournament being disrupted. [32] Some grassroots social movements have called for a boycott of the event. [33]

Blikkiesdorp

Blikkiesdorp has become well known for its high crime rate, its substandard living conditions, and its extremely hot or cold, windy and sandy living environment. [34] [35] [36] [37] NGOs, international human rights organisations, and the Anti-Eviction Campaign have publicly criticised the conditions in Blikkiesdorp and how they say it is used to reinforce the eviction of poor families especially to make way for the 2010 World Cup. [16] [37] [38] [39] Residents also threatened to burn down Blikkiesdorp before the World Cup begins because of the bad conditions in the settlement. [40]

Xenophobic Violence

There were widespread reports in the local press that there would be mass planned violence against migrants at the conclusion of the tournament. This did not happen. [41]

HIV/AIDS

Economic effects

Non-FIFA events

In November 2009 it was reported that a rugby mid-year Test match between the Springboks and France scheduled to take place in Cape Town on 12 June 2010 would be moved to Europe, due to FIFA regulations banning other sport events in host cities during the time of the World Cup. [47] After negotiations between the South African Rugby Union and members of the local organising committee, it was announced that the Test would be allowed to take place in Cape Town on the originally scheduled date because no World Cup match was to be played in Cape Town on that day, and the Test would be played at Newlands, which is not a World Cup venue. [48] [49]

FIFA trademarks

The South African low-fare airline Kulula.com were ordered by FIFA to withdraw an advertisement that it claimed infringed their trademarks. [50] The advert, titled «The unofficial carrier of the you-know-what», features soccer balls, vuvuzelas and the flag of South Africa, which FIFA claims when used in conjunction with each other constitutes an infringement of its trademarks. [51] Kulula.com disputed FIFA’s claim, [50] but later announced that they would withdraw the specific advert whilst continuing with the advertisement campaign. [52]

Broadcast rights and fees

In Singapore, FIFA’s broadcast rights fees for the 2010 World Cup finals have been described as «exorbitant», [53] with the organisation having changed prices according to what it perceived the country’s TV operators were willing to pay. [54] When Singapore TV operators SingTel and Starhub joined together to bid for the broadcast rights in late 2009, they were reportedly charged an initial S$40 million (about US$30 million ). [55] When the Singapore TV operators refused to pay the initial sum quoted by FIFA, and as time passed, Singapore was faced with the prospect of being one of the few countries not to get match broadcasts from the 2010 World Cup. [56] [57]

With only about a month left before the tournament, FIFA finally relented and reportedly reduced the fee to S$21 million ( US$15 million ), which was then accepted by the Singapore TV operators. This reduced fee was still significantly higher than the fee that FIFA charged Starhub for the exclusive rights to broadcast the 2006 World Cup in Germany, which was reported to be S$15 million ( US$11 million ).

This increased fee for the 2010 World Cup tournament broadcast rights resulted in the Singapore TV operators passing on the cost to their subscribers, which were then charged a special fee of S$94 (US$68) in addition to existing contracts, to watch the tournament’s games. This high additional fee was the most expensive in the region, and angered Singapore football fans. [58] Singapore was more expensive when compared to countries in the region that will either be broadcasting the matches free of charge, as in the case of Indonesia and Thailand; or at significantly lower viewing fees, at US$21 in Malaysia and US$38 in Hong Kong. [59] This fee is also almost four times the S$25 (US$18) special fee that Starhub charged its subscribers for viewing the 2006 World Cup finals matches in Germany. [60] As a result, many fans decided to protest against the increased fees with a mass boycott of the 2010 World Cup broadcast service by both operators. [61]

Local vendors

Local vendors were prohibited from selling food and merchandise within a 1.5 km radius of any stadium hosting a World Cup Match. For a vendor to operate within the radius a registration fee of 60,000 South African Rand, equivalent to 7,888 US dollars, had to be paid FIFA. This fee was out of most local vendors’ reach, as they are simple one-man-operated vendors. This prevented international visitors from experiencing local South African food. Some local vendors felt cheated out an opportunity of financial gain and spreading South African culture, in favour of multinational corporations. [62]

Match effects

Vuvuzelas

Fifa world cup 2010. Смотреть фото Fifa world cup 2010. Смотреть картинку Fifa world cup 2010. Картинка про Fifa world cup 2010. Fifa world cup 2010

During the World Cup events many competitors have criticised and complained about the noise caused by the vuvuzela horns, including France’s Patrice Evra who blamed the horns for the team’s poor performance. [63] He also claimed that the sound of the vuvuzelas away from the stadiums hampered the ability of the players to get their rest. [64] Other critics include Lionel Messi who complained that the sound of the vuvuzelas hampered communication among players on the pitch, [65] and broadcasting companies, which complained that commentators’ voices were being drowned out by the sound. [64] Cristiano Ronaldo went on record to state that the sound of the vuvuzelas disturbed the teams’ concentration. [66]

Others watching on television have complained that the ambient audio feed from the stadium only contains the sounds of the vuvuzelas and the natural sounds of people in the stands are drowned out. [67] [68] A spokesperson for the ESPN network said it was taking steps to minimize the noise of the crowd on its broadcasts. [69] Portuguese telecommunications company Portugal Telecom announced on 16 June an offer of an alternative audio feed, in which the vuvuzela sound is edited out, to the customers of its Pay-TV service called MEO.

When asked a few days into the tournament whether consideration would be given to banning vuvuzelas during matches, South African organising chief Danny Jordaan replied, «if there are grounds to do so, yes» and that «if any land on the pitch in anger we will take action.» [63]

Ticketing and attendance

Some first-round games suffered from large blocks of unoccupied stands, including one match with nearly 11,000 empty seats. FIFA reported that group ticket purchases went unused, and that current attendance levels were in fact second only to the 1994 event during the early round period. [70]

Today’s the big day. TechCrunch turns five years old. And oh, there’s a huge football – no, not ‘soccer’ – event kicking off in South Africa too.

Many of you will be missing the opening match(es) while you’re out celebrating our birthday and 5 years of change on the Web all over the world, but that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to catch up from your mobile phone, or look up what went down on the Internet when – or if – you make it back home.

Here’s our ultimate guide to how you can keep track of all things World Cup 2010 on the Web and/or through mobile applications. Sure, Mike Butcher over at TechCrunch Europe already posted a few pointers, and Nicholas Deleon from CrunchGear tried to compile an exhaustive list of websites, apps and podcasts as well.

But frankly, those guys are amateurs. I know you deserve better. So here goes.

INTERNET GIANTS
————————————-

Microsoft

Microsoft has detailed its plans for the World Cup two days ago.

Bing Instant Answers aims to bring you all the latest details, the schedule, upcoming games, live scores group standings, and more. The results will show in the U.S. and 30 other countries (why not everywhere, we have no idea).

Redmond also lets you visualize the World Cup teams on Bing.

There is also a Bing Map App that will be displaying FIFA live data on Bing Maps, including team fixtures, results, news, photos, venues, a Photosynth hub for World Cup images, and a Twitter map that will display all of the World Cup related tweets.

Finally, Bing has released a South Africa Bing Map imagery update, so you can see the stadiums where all the games will take place.

Google

Google is making it easy to keep track of the schedule and groups – just run a search for ‘world cup’ and the basic info will be displayed right on top. Also, there’s a cute easter egg to be found at the bottom, just in case you weren’t aware yet.

YouTube sports a custom logo for the occasion (as does Google Search), and is shining a big spotlight on the World Cup on its homepage, too.

Google also announced earlier that there’s new Street View imagery around seven new football stadiums in South Africa (see them in 3D here).

Update: more from Google: a Chrome extension and an iGoogle Gadget. The company has also look at some internal resources to see what they could “uncover about the upcoming tournament and its global audience”.

Yahoo

The logo on the Yahoo homepage today is animated for the World Cup kick-off, and leads to the company’s sports vertical, where Yahoo will be keeping track of news, photos, videos, results etc. Yahoo is also featuring shortcuts to relevant links when you enter certain search terms (e.g. world cup schedule).

Yahoo has also launched a skinnable, themed toolbar (see Flickr) and has signed a deal with David Beckham to function as its brand ambassador and whatnot.

Facebook

Facebook today posted its ‘guide to the world cup’. The company is running a global competition to see which country has the most passionate football fans – you can check out the leaderboard here (Chile is winning right now).

Facebook also has some official broadcast partners that enable users to share status updates and comments while you watch the events live on TV by using Facebook’s Live Stream social plugin. Partners, by country, are listed in the blog post and here.

Also: polls, a heads up for charity 1GOAL, and a promotion of the EA SPORTS FIFA Superstars app, where you can build your own dream team and challenge your friends.

Other than that, Facebook is touting its Connect, Like, Share and Recommend features.

Twitter

The folks over at Twitter have added a custom World Cup theme to the gallery stable, and have put together a dedicated section where you can see a list of upcoming matches and more.

Evidently, you can go to the site to see Top Tweets, which are algorithmically selected tweets and retweets about the World Cup that Twitter deems most interesting.

You can show your allegiance to one team using a special hashtag. Find out what it is for the country you’re cheering for, use it, and you’ll see the corresponding flag in your tweet. Click it, and you’ll be redirected to the special Twitter World Cup pages built for said country.

Finally, the suggested user list now boasts a special section for World Cup-related staff picks.

MySpace

MySpace put together a World Cup page which brings together live video from Univision, video clips from Fox Sports, a Tweetbeat widget with World Cup Tweets, photos, team badges, social games, and a petition to bring the World Cup to the U.S.

Gowalla

Fifa world cup 2010. Смотреть фото Fifa world cup 2010. Смотреть картинку Fifa world cup 2010. Картинка про Fifa world cup 2010. Fifa world cup 2010The location-based service has a number of special things going on to commemorate the World Cub. First, if you check-in anywhere and include “World Cup” in your comment, you’ll get a special “Beautiful Game” pin. Second, if you happen to be in South Africa for the game, the opening match (and closing match) venue has a special stamp. There are also special stamps for some of the big matches like South Africa vs. Mexico and USA vs. England.

Gowalla also has a featured trip around South Africa. There are also plenty of soccer ball items hidden in various places around the world (think: soccer fields).

And finally, a U.S.-based soccer team, the Seattle Sounders, has partnered with Gowalla to make a World Cup Pub Crawl (11 bars), as well as some special venues to watch key games.

They aren’t doing anything special as far as we can tell, but at least they have a special site section for the World Cup (powered by Fanhouse).

Opera

If you use Opera Mini, the company’s mobile browser, on your phone, head to sports.opera.com to find a special section on the World Cup.

Hitwise

Also worth noting: Experian Hitwise has shared some of its data related to World Cup search activity. Brazil soccer star Ronaldinho received the second-highest percentage of searches, with 5.63 percent, followed by U.S. soccer star Landon Donovan, with 4.24 percent. Spanish-language players dominated the top 10 results, comprising eight of the top 10 spots.

Yahoo’s World Cup 2010 site received the second-most traffic from World Cup search last week in the U.S. FIFA.com was first at 50%, with Yahoo second at 11% and Wikipedia third at 8%.

Hitwise also says U.S. searches for the term “world cup” have increased 216% in the last two weeks, and the number of terms with “world cup” increased 226% over the same period.

JibJab

Ok, not an Internet giant, but gigantically funny: personalized your own little JibJab football match video.

Yes, plenty of news and sports sites will feature World Cup coverage in articles, photos and videos. But these are some of the sites we think will be most interesting to visit during the next few weeks of football craziness:

FIFA.com

Fifa world cup 2010. Смотреть фото Fifa world cup 2010. Смотреть картинку Fifa world cup 2010. Картинка про Fifa world cup 2010. Fifa world cup 2010The International Federation of Association Football, commonly known as FIFA, should be prepared for the wave. Its main website evidently is all about the World Cup today and in the coming weeks, and it’ll be the main source of information for many, many people scouring for information on the Web. It also helps that most of the major search engines are including links to the site in their custom search results.

Tip: register and log in to personalize the experience.

Nice touch: a Twitter-like live stream of information and links.

Yahoo Sports

We mentioned it before, but Yahoo’s Sports vertical has a dedicated section on the World Cup where you’ll find news, photos, videos of the event and more. Also, a fantasy football game.

Goal.com

Quote: “Almost three years on since the first match of qualification. 204 teams. 848 matches. 2337 goals. And it’s finally come down to this.”

Yes it has, and Goal.com is ready for the flood of news and information hungry visitors. Here’s a direct link to World Cup coverage.

SB Nation

SB Nation, a fast-growing network of fan-centric online sports communities also features a special World Cup 2010 section.

You might also want to check out Fantator, which keeps sports fans everywhere updated on what is happening in all the matches.

ESPN

ESPN has a special World Cup 2010 website. Everything you need to know is and will be on there, and you can play the World Fantasy game to enhance the experience.

Others

Evidently, most if not all media organizations all across the globe are reserving special sections on TV, in print and online for the World Cup 2010. We’re sure you know best which local publisher will be providing the best coverage in your country, so we’re going to let you decide that on your own damn self, but here are some of the more familiar names:

PODCASTS & RADIO
————————————-

Sirius XM is broadcasting all the games of the World Cup live, so listen in.

The Guardian also has a free podcast, World Cup Daily, that CrunchGear says will absolutely be worth downloading.

They also say World Football Daily is another great (but not free) podcast that will be bringing the thunder during the tournament.

Ok, what did I miss? (Not that I’ll be updating this post, I’m too psyched for the opening match that’s about to start – but at least people will find more useful links in comments).

Also, I say Spain is going to win the tournament. You can quote me on that.
