Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964)

Mothra vs. Godzilla marks the first crossover between two of Toho’s own monsters: their flagship character Godzilla and the giant moth deity Mothra, introduced three years prior in her own film. When Mothra’s egg washes ashore in Japan following a typhoon, greedy businessmen Kumayama and Jiro Torahata claim it as their own property and plan to exploit it for revenue. To make matters worse, Godzilla reemerges and begins rampaging across Japan, making his way straight for the egg. It is up to Ichiro Sakai, Junko Nakanishi, and Shunsuke Miura to travel to Infant Island and plead with the dying Mothra to return to Japan and battle Godzilla to save both her offspring and the millions of innocent people threatened by Godzilla’s rampage. Mothra vs. Godzilla was immediately followed by a direct sequel, Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, later the same year.

Plot [ edit | edit source ]

A news reporter named Ichiro Sakai and his photographer Junko Nakanishi take pictures of the wreckage caused by a typhoon. Later on that day, a giant egg is discovered on the shore. The local villagers salvage it and scientists come to study the egg.

While Sakai and Junko try to ask Professor Miura questions about the egg, an entrepreneur of Happy Enterprises named Kumayama scurries the scientists off and explains that he bought the egg from the local villagers. Instead of letting scientists study the egg, Kumayama wants to make it into a large tourist attraction. Sakai, Junko, and Professor Miura are disgusted and believe that Kumayama has no right to keep the egg.

While the three are discussing the egg at a hotel, they discover Kumayama checking in. Sakai wonders aloud if somebody else may be working with Kumayama and investigates the matter. Kumayama walks into the room of Jiro Torahata, the head of Happy Enterprises. As the two are discussing the billion-dollar tourist attraction, two tiny twin girls, known as the Shobijin, interrupt them. The Shobijin explain that they are from Infant Island and that the egg belongs to a monster named Mothra who lives there. Torahata and Kumayama ignore the girls’ pleas and try to capture them.

The Shobijin escape the room and meet with Sakai, Junko, and Professor Miura outside the hotel. The girls beg them to bring the egg back too and the three promise to try as hard as they can to bring the egg back to Infant Island. The girls explain that if the egg is not returned, a larva will hatch and will cause great destruction to its surroundings. Sakai tries to write editorials but «. public opinion is powerless against the law.»

The girls soon leave and even though they could not get the egg back, they thank Sakai, Junko, and Miura for their kindness. Later, while the three are testing for radioactivity in an industrial area, Godzilla suddenly pops out of a beach and begins to attack Nagoya and the other surrounding cities.

The editor of Sakai’s newspaper believes that the military cannot do anything against Godzilla and discusses it with Sakai and Junko. Jiro, another reporter who loves to eat eggs, walks in and suggests that Mothra might be able to defeat Godzilla. Sakai and Junko are skeptical that the island would agree because atomic testing had destroyed most of their island, and they had failed to return the egg to them.

The two go to Infant Island anyway with Professor Miura. They are captured by the local villagers and are brought to the tribe’s chief. The three ask for assistance but, as expected, are turned down because of the atomic testing that destroyed their island, and Japan’s failure to return the egg.

The Shobijin are heard singing and everyone walks towards them. Sakai, Junko, and Miura ask the Shobijin for Mothra’s assistance but they are also turned town. Junko then pleads to all the villagers that not everyone from Japan should be blamed for what happened to their island. She argues that Godzilla is killing both good and bad people in Japan, but that all people have a right to live. Sakai then adds that «we’re all human» and that everyone is connected and must help each other. Mothra’s screech is soon heard and the Shobijin ask everyone to follow them. They convince Mothra to help Japan, but the monster is weak. Although the monster will fight Godzilla, it will have no power to return to the island.

The next day, Kumayama barges into Torahata’s room and demands Torahata to give him his money back that Torahata had recently swindled from Kumayama. The two get into a fistfight and Kumayama knocks Torahata down. Kumayama crawls into Torahata’s money cabinet and begins to steal the money from it. Torahata wakes up and sees Godzilla approaching the hotel. He then grabs a gun and kills Kumayama. Torahata tries to escape with his money but Godzilla destroys the hotel, crushing the greedy head of Happy Enterprises to death.

Godzilla walks towards the egg, intending to destroy it, until Mothra shows up. The two fight a tough battle where Mothra seems to have the upper hand. While on the ground, Godzilla fires his atomic ray at Mothra and badly burns one of her wings. Mothra dies with her wing resting on top of the egg. Godzilla walks away. The Shobijin then explain to Sakai, Junko, and Miura that the egg can be hatched today. The tiny twins soon begin to sing.

Meanwhile, the military tries to kill Godzilla by electrocuting him with «artificial lighting», but fails. The Shobijin continue singing and the monster egg finally hatches with not one, but two Mothra larvae emerging. The Mothra larvae follow Godzilla to Iwa Island and use silk spray on Godzilla to wrap the giant monster up in a cocoon. Godzilla struggles as he becomes fully wrapped up and plunges into the ocean. The Mothra larvae celebrate and return to their island.

U.S. release [ edit | edit source ]

American International Pictures originally released Mothra vs. Godzilla in the United States under the title Godzilla vs. The Thing in September of 1964, and it opened in New York City on November 25, 1964. Mothra’s appearance was kept out of promotional material, which hinted that Godzilla’s opponent would be a hideous tentacled creature and referred to it only as «the Thing.» New York Times film critic Eugene Archer reacted to the film and its title: «Well, there are three things, not counting the movie. One has wings and looks like a big bee. The other two are hatched from the first Thing’s egg, after quite a bit of worshipful kootch dancing from a pair of foot-tall native goddesses. «

The most notable difference between Mothra vs. Godzilla and Godzilla vs. The Thing is an effects scene that was shot by Ishiro Honda and Eiji Tsuburaya’s teams, yet does not appear in the Japanese version. After Godzilla attacks Nagoya, American Frontier Missile Cruisers fruitlessly bombard him, marking the first occasion the United States battled the monster. Harold Conway and Osman Yusuf, two foreign actors who were staples in Toho films at the time, appear in this sequence.

In American home video releases beginning in the 1980s, the film was retitled Godzilla vs. Mothra. However, Mothra is still repeatedly called «The Thing» in the dub, confusing many viewers who thought «The Thing» and «Mothra» were two separate monsters. Because of this, when TriStar released Godzilla vs. Mothra in the U.S., they re-titled it Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth so that it would not be confused with this film. Despite this, Peter Bollinger’s cover artwork for Simitar Entertainment’s VHS and DVD release of the older film continues to be erroneously used to represent the newer film on streaming services and even on Sony Pictures’ official website.

United Kingdom release [ edit | edit source ]

Warner-Pathe brought Godzilla vs. The Thing to UK theaters in 1965, as part of a double feature with The Time Travelers. [5] It received an X rating from the British Board of Film Censors, preventing children under 16 from seeing it. Sony released the Japanese version of the film on Blu-ray in 2019 as part of the The Criterion Collection’s Godzilla: The Showa-Era Films, 1954–1975 box set.

Mothra

Mothra’s major distinction among Toho’s library of kaiju, aside from being the first female monster in the Godzilla series, is her benevolent nature and relationship to mankind. While other monsters like Godzilla frequently menace humanity with their very existence, Mothra fights to protect humanity from monsters that threaten it. Mothra is accompanied by two miniature twin priestesses named the Shobijin, who speak to humanity on her behalf. However, Mothra has still wrought destruction herself, though this is only to rescue her Shobijin when they are kidnapped or when she is under the control of the Kilaaks. Since her introduction, Mothra has become Toho’s most popular and prolific monster character behind only Godzilla himself, earning the title «Queen of the Monsters.»

In Mothra’s onscreen debut, she laid waste to Tokyo and New Kirk City in her quest to recover the Shobijin and return them to Infant Island. Mothra returned in Mothra vs. Godzilla, where she traveled to Japan to battle Godzilla when he threatened her unhatched egg that had washed ashore there. Mothra was killed in the battle, but two twin larvae hatched from her egg and carried on her battle against Godzilla, eventually triumphing over him. One of the larvae died sometime afterward, but the surviving one took her mother’s place as the goddess of Infant Island. Mothra was soon called upon to defend Earth against the evil King Ghidorah, and managed to recruit both Godzilla and Rodan to her cause. Mothra eventually matured into an adult and rescued her people from Letchi Island after they were kidnapped and enslaved by the terrorist group known as the Red Bamboo. By the end of the 20th century, a larval Mothra was contained on Monsterland, only to be released when the Kilaaks took over the island and assumed control of the monsters. Mothra was soon freed from Kilaak control and fought alongside the other Earth monsters to kill King Ghidorah once and for all and defeat the alien menace.

Mothra was reintroduced in the Heisei series film Godzilla vs. Mothra, where she fought alongside a dark counterpart named Battra to defeat Godzilla. After the Godzilla Heisei series ended, a standalone trilogy of films focusing on Mothra was released from 1996 to 1998. This trilogy introduced Mothra Leo, Mothra’s son, who would go on to star in the trilogy’s second and third entries following his mother’s death. Mothra made an appearance in the third entry in the Millennium series of Godzilla films, Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, as one of the three Guardian Monsters, who defended Japan against Godzilla. Mothra returned two films later in Godzilla: Tokyo SOS, where she and her twin larvae supported Kiryu in his battle against Godzilla. In Godzilla Final Wars, Mothra aided Godzilla in his battle against Monster X and Gigan, and seemingly sacrificed her own life to destroy Gigan. Mothra made a cameo through a cave painting in the film Kong: Skull Island, the second entry in Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros.’ MonsterVerse, and went on to appear in Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019, the sequel to Legendary’s Godzilla from 2014. Mothra is also a major player in the universe of the GODZILLA anime trilogy, though she does not appear directly. Rather, in the backstory of this universe, Mothra defended a surviving segment of the human population from Godzilla in 2048, and helped to relocate them to the Mount Fuji area, where they evolved over time into the Houtua and continued to worship the egg Mothra left behind.

Name [ edit | edit source ]

Design [ edit | edit source ]

Since her first film, Mothra has been depicted in various stages of the lepidopteran life cycle: Mothra’s mammoth egg is decoratively colored in blue and yellow waves. The egg hatches into her larva, a massive brown, segmented caterpillar (resembling a silkworm) with glowing blue, sometimes red, eyes. In rare circumstances, twins may emerge from the egg. The caterpillar eventually spins a silken cocoon around itself (the pupa stage), and from this cocoon the imago (adult) Mothra emerges, a gigantic moth-like creature with brightly-colored wings. Mothra’s life cycle—particularly the tendency of an imago’s death to coincide with its larvae hatching—echoes that of the Phoenix, resembling resurrection and suggesting divinity.

In her debut novel The Luminous Fairies and Mothra, Mothra had a design more reminiscent of a swallow, her head also being more like a butterfly’s. Her larval form was segmented, similarly to the way she would be portrayed in her first film appearance, but had longer legs and possessed a more caterpillar-like face.

In Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, Mothra is portrayed with purple eyes, although her eyes are normally blue.

Personality [ edit | edit source ]

Despite having wrought destruction worthy of any Toho kaiju, Mothra is almost always portrayed as a kind and benevolent creature, causing destruction only when acting as protector to her worshipers on Infant Island or to her egg, or as collateral damage while protecting Earth from a greater threat. Mothra is usually accompanied by two tiny priestesses or fairies (often called Shobijin—Japanese for «small beauties») who also speak for her.

Origins [ edit | edit source ]

Mothra’s origins have somewhat varied from film to film, but she is always portrayed as a benevolent and ancient creature that possesses some level of divinity.

In the Showa era, Godzilla vs. Mothra, Rebirth of Mothra, Godzilla: Tokyo SOS and Godzilla Final Wars, Mothra is the guardian goddess of the remote Infant Island in the south Pacific Ocean. There, she is perpetually reborn through an egg and is worshiped by the island’s natives. She is spoken for by two miniature telepathic fairies, called either the Shobijin, Cosmos, or Elias.

Mothra’s origin is gone into in greater depth in Godzilla vs. Mothra. This film explains that Mothra was the guardian of the ancient world, protecting all life on Earth from threats. When an ancient civilization created a climate-controlling device, the Earth became offended and created a dark Mothra, called Battra, to destroy it. After destroying the device, Battra proceeded to eradicate the entire civilization and sought to exterminate all of mankind, believing humans to be a blight on the planet. Mothra challenged Battra and defeated him, sealing him away in the North Sea. Following this battle, Mothra and the Cosmos, the only remnants of the ancient civilization, took up residence on the remote Infant Island, where they lived in peace for the next twelve thousand years.

In Rebirth of Mothra, it is established that Mothra is the last living member of an ancient race of giant guardian moths that defended the Earth throughout its history. In her old age, Mothra lived in solitude with the Elias on Infant Island, and with the last of her strength summoned forth an egg to continue her legacy after her death.

In Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, Mothra’s origin receives its first major alteration. In this film, Mothra is one of the three Guardian Monsters and the Goddess of the Sea. In ancient times, Mothra and her fellow guardians Baragon and King Ghidorah were slain by Japanese warriors. Mothra was laid to rest under Lake Ikeda while the warriors who slayed her prayed for her soul, that she would return one day to save Japan. Thousands of years later, the prophet Hirotoshi Isayama awakened Mothra by transferring the souls of Japan’s honorable dead into her, so that she and the other Guardian Monsters could together stop Godzilla.

In the continuity of the GODZILLA anime trilogy, Mothra is a mystical creature which lives in isolation in the Amazon rainforest alongside a tribe of humans known as Mothra’s People, who worship her as their deity. Mothra’s origins and past are unknown, but she has been living in symbiosis with her people for some time, protecting them from harm and providing for their needs. Mothra also possesses a counterpart named Battra, and together the two moth monsters were believed capable of defeating Godzilla.

In the MonsterVerse, Mothra is again revered as a benevolent goddess, but her origin lies not on Infant Island but rather in China’s Yunnan Rainforest. Ancient accounts and paintings of Mothra show that she was worshiped by humans in the ancient past, and she appears in folklore from around the world. Notably, some ancient pictures depict her fighting alongside Godzilla and human warriors against King Ghidorah, either as an account of an ancient battle or a prophecy for a future one. In 2009, a Monarch team headed by Dr. Emma Russel discovered Mothra’s cocoon in an ancient temple in the Yunnan Rainforest, dubbed the «Temple of the Moth.»

History [ edit | edit source ]

Showa era [ edit | edit source ]

Mothra [ edit | edit source ]

Mothra was first discovered on Infant Island, where natives to the island worshiped her as a goddess. Invaders from Rolisica took over the island and stole the Shobijin. The natives went to a temple, where a giant egg was held. The egg hatched into a larva, called Mothra, which swam across the Pacific Ocean and destroyed the Orion Maru as she journeyed north towards Japan to save the Shobijin from the humans. She destroyed Tokyo while trying to find them, then tore down Tokyo Tower and formed her cocoon. She emerged from the cocoon in her imago form, having been inadvertently helped by the army’s Atomic Heat Ray Guns. She went to New Kirk City, and was reunited with the Shobijin at an airport runway after destroying a large portion of the city. Mothra then flew back to Infant Island with the Shobijin to live in peace.

Mothra vs. Godzilla [ edit | edit source ]

Mothra’s egg washed up on the shores of Japan when a typhoon carried it away from the shores of Infant Island. Kumayama, the owner of the company Happy Enterprises, bought the egg from the citizens of the area where the egg was found and planned to turn it into the main attraction of his upcoming amusement park The Shobijin came to Japan to request the egg’s return, only for Kumayama and his financier Jiro Torahata to try and capture them as well. The Shobijin escaped and met with a group of sympathetic humans, warning that when the egg hatched the larva would cause much destruction and death while searching for food and attempting to return to Infant Island on its own. When the Shobijin’s allies met with Kumayama and Torahata, they refused to return the egg and wanted to buy the Shobijin instead. The Shobijin then returned to Infant Island with Mothra. When Godzilla emerged in Japan and began heading for the incubator holding Mothra’s egg, the three humans who helped the Shobijin traveled to Infant Island, which had been devastated by nuclear bomb tests. They asked the Shobijin for Mothra’s help in defeating Godzilla, but they refused. However, Mothra herself, who was living out the last of her days on a sacred rock, agreed to help and flew to Japan, knowing she would never return.

Mothra arrived in Japan just as Godzilla reached Mothra’s egg and attacked him. Mothra used the gusts of wind from her wings to knock Godzilla of his feet and tried to slash him with her claws, but she was too feeble to injure him. Mothra released poison powder from her wings against Godzilla, but Godzilla simply blasted her with his atomic breath, causing her to fall on top of her egg and die. While Godzilla continued his rampage across Japan, the Shobijin and the Infant Islanders began to pray for Mothra’s egg to hatch. Finally, the egg hatched into two twin larvae. The larvae followed Godzilla to Iwa Island and attacked him there. While the larvae were much smaller and weaker than Godzilla, they used their size to hide behind rocks and sneak up on Godzilla, spraying him with silk. Eventually, Godzilla was trapped in a silken cocoon and fell over a cliff into the ocean below. Victorious, Mothra’s larvae and the Shobijin returned to Infant Island.

Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster [ edit | edit source ]

In the time after Mothra’s battle with Godzilla, one of the twin larvae passed away, leaving its sister as the sole goddess of Infant Island. When the evil three-headed space monster King Ghidorah arrived on the Earth, the Japanese government asked the Shobijin to call Mothra to fight him. The Shobijin remarked that the young Mothra had no chance of defeating King Ghidorah on her own, but proposed that if she could recruit the help of Godzilla and Rodan they may have a chance. The Shobijin called Mothra to Japan, where she sought out Godzilla and Rodan, who were battling at Mount Fuji. Mothra used her silk to get the monsters to stop fighting and informed them of the threat posed by King Ghidorah. Godzilla and Rodan stubbornly replied that they had no reason to defend humanity from King Ghidorah, and refused to work together until the other apologized. Mothra told them that the Earth was not just for humanity, but for all creatures and that it was their duty to protect it. Unfortunately, Mothra’s words failed to sway either monster, and the young larva was forced to take on King Ghidorah by herself. King Ghidorah easily blasted Mothra aside with his gravity beams, attracting the anger of Godzilla and Rodan, who finally joined the battle. Together, the three Earth monsters overpowered King Ghidorah, knocking him to the ground and trapping him in silk. King Ghidorah finally flew off into space, leaving Mothra and her new allies victorious. Mothra reunited with the Shobijin and swam back to Infant Island, while Godzilla and Rodan watched.

Ebirah, Horror of the Deep [ edit | edit source ]

Mothra, now grown into her imago form, remained asleep on Infant Island while her people were abducted and enslaved by the terrorist organization known as the Red Bamboo, who operated on nearby Letchi Island. The Shobijin and the remaining natives continued to pray to Mothra until she finally awakened and heard their plea. The Shobijin told Ryota and Yata, who had both ended up on Infant Island, to travel to Letchi Island and free the slaves, then create a giant net. The two of them traveled to the island by boat, while Mothra and the Shobijin prepared to fly there as well. When Mothra arrived, the island had been rigged to explode and Godzilla was in combat with the monster Ebirah, who guarded the island’s waters. When Godzilla defeated Ebirah and saw Mothra fly overhead, he approached her and tried to initiate combat. Aware that the whole island was about to detonate in a huge nuclear-force explosion rigged by the Red Bamboo, Mothra simply knocked Godzilla over. While Godzilla was down, Mothra grabbed the net carrying the rescued slaves, then flew away from the island. Godzilla soon jumped into the water, just as the entire island was consumed in a nuclear explosion.

Destroy All Monsters [ edit | edit source ]

Godzilla vs. Gigan [ edit | edit source ]

In 1972, a single Mothra larva was living on Monster Island with a large number of other monsters. It is unknown whether this larva was the offspring of the second generation Mothra, or itself the third generation Mothra.

Heisei era [ edit | edit source ]

Godzilla vs. Mothra [ edit | edit source ]

Twelve thousand years ago, Mothra was the guardian of an ancient civilization. However, this civilization created a climate-controlling device, greatly angering the Earth itself and leading it to create Battra, a dark version of Mothra. Battra destroyed the device, but soon went beyond his purpose and attempted to destroy all of mankind, seeing them as a blight on the Earth. Mothra tried to stop them, and the two moths engaged in a titanic battle that destroyed the ancient civilization. Mothra defeated Battra and sealed him away in the North Sea, while Mothra and the Cosmos relocated to Infant Island to live in solitude. In 1993, an expedition sent to the island by the Japanese government encountered the Cosmos along with Mothra’s egg. The Cosmos explained the story of Mothra and Battra to the explorers, and warned that the meteor that recently struck the Earth could awaken Battra. The Cosmos agreed to allow Mothra’s egg to be transported to Japan, but en route the barge carrying it was attacked by Godzilla. The egg hatched into a larval Mothra, who attempted to defend herself from Godzilla. Eventually, Battra arrived in his larval form and knocked Mothra aside, attacking Godzilla instead. Godzilla and Battra were eventually swallowed up by a volcanic fault and presumed dead, while Mothra returned to Infant Island and the Cosmos were secretly captured by one of the explorers, Kenji Ando.

Ando brought the Cosmos to his employer, the Marutomo Company, who planned to exploit the tiny fairies as a publicity stunt. The Cosmos prayed to Mothra, who left the island to recover the Cosmos. The JSDF tried to fight Mothra in the ocean as she approached Japan, but failed to halt the larva. Mothra came ashore in Tokyo, unintentionally leaving a trail of destruction as she searched for the Cosmos. Masako Tezuka, her daughter Midori and Miki Saegusa recovered the Cosmos and brought them to Mothra, causing her rampage to cease. Unfortunately, the JSDF opened fire on Mothra with artillery, wounding her. Mothra crawled to the National Diet Building and encased herself in a cocoon. Meanwhile, Godzilla surfaced from the crater of Mount Fuji while Battra reappeared in the ocean and transformed into his imago form. As both Godzilla and Battra approached the Tokyo area, Mothra emerged from her cocoon in her imago form and flew off to stop Battra. Mothra and Battra clashed in the skies above Yokohama, with Battra overpowering Mothra and causing her to crash to the ground in the Minato Mirai 21 district. Before Battra could kill his light counterpart, Godzilla appeared and attacked them both. Godzilla proved to be more than a match for either moth, subduing Battra and nearly killing Mothra before Battra came to her aid, realizing that Godzilla was a far greater threat. Mothra saved Battra and temporarily knocked Godzilla down. Mothra communicated with Battra, and they decided to put aside their differences to defeat Godzilla. Mothra and Battra joined forces, firing their various beam attacks in tandem against Godzilla. Godzilla was subdued, and Mothra and Battra grabbed him, carrying him out over the ocean. Godzilla bit into Battra’s throat and fired his atomic breath, killing him and forcing Mothra to drop both monsters into the sea below. Mothra placed a sacred seal over the water and reunited with the Cosmos at Haneda Airport. The Cosmos revealed that Battra told Mothra that a larger meteor was going to strike and destroy the Earth in 1999, and it was his duty to stop it. In the event of Battra’s death, Mothra agreed to destroy the meteor instead. Mothra and the Cosmos bid farewell to the humans and flew into outer space, preparing to intercept the meteor before it could reach Earth.

Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla [ edit | edit source ]

While flying through space to intercept the meteor that was destined to hit Earth in 1999, Mothra became aware of an evil extraterrestrial clone of Godzilla called SpaceGodzilla that was heading to Earth with the intention of killing his Earthling counterpart and conquering the planet. Mothra sent a Fairy Mothra to Earth, where it revealed itself to Miki Saegusa and transformed into a projection of the Cosmos, who warned Miki of the impending to disaster and stressed the importance of Godzilla in defending the planet. When SpaceGodzilla was ultimately defeated by the combined efforts of Godzilla and G-Force, the projection of the Cosmos reappeared to Miki and congratulated her on saving the planet.

It was also speculated by U.N.G.C.C. scientists that SpaceGodzilla’s creation may have been due to Mothra unwittingly carrying some of Godzilla’s flesh into outer space following their battle, allowing it to be pulled into a black hole and released through a white hole, where it was exposed to supernovas and mutated into a crystalline lifeform.

Rebirth of Mothra [ edit | edit source ]

Millions of years ago, a space monster called Desghidorah arrived to destroy the Earth. This three-headed demonic dragon was forced to deal with resistance in the form of a species of highly advanced, enormous moths, which were known as Mothras. These moths were the protectors of the Elias, a race of tiny, human-like beings, who inhabited the planet. After the ensuing battle, Desghidorah was defeated and sealed within the Earth, although a great deal of life on the planet Earth was lost. Three Elias: Moll, Lora, and Belvera, were all who were left of their once prosperous civilization. Though Moll and Lora remained benevolent defenders of the Earth, Belvera became twisted and vengeful following her race’s demise. These tiny fairies, along with one final Mothra, remained in solitude on Infant Island for countless millennia.

In order to preserve her legacy, Mothra summoned an enormous egg, however, she became physically exhausted from the ordeal. Shortly afterwards, a logging company in Hokkaido uncovered the tomb where the Mothras had sealed Desghidorah long ago. When the seal that had bound the creature was removed from the area, Moll and Lora fought Belvera for control of the artifact. Belvera prevailed and managed to release Desghidorah from its rocky tomb, planning to use it to destroy mankind. Mothra was summoned to stop Desghidorah, which was absorbing the life out of the forests. Mothra fought her hardest to stop Desghidorah, but was simply too old and frail to carry on the fight. Moll and Lora reluctantly prayed to the egg, causing it to prematurely hatch into a larva named Mothra Leo. Mothra Leo arrived to assist his mother, but Desghidorah grabbed Leo with his teeth and bit into him. Mothra rescued her son and destroyed a dam, causing Desghidorah to be buried in a flood of water. With her enemy distracted, Mothra carried Leo out over the sea, but her strength failed and she fell into the water. Mothra struggled to stay afloat, as Leo desperately tried to hold her up above the surface, but to no avail. Mothra sank underwater and drowned, leaving Leo to carry on her legacy and stop Desghidorah. Leo then swam to a remote island to transform into his imago stage and continue the battle.

Get Going! Godzilland [ edit | edit source ]

Both imago and larval Mothra appear in the 1994 and 1996 educational Get Going! Godzilland OVAs. In these OVAs, Mothra is one of the more mature and caring residents of Godzilland, and raises her two twin larvae there. Mothra is viewed as a motherly figure by the other kaiju, and is addressed by them as «Mosura-San,» being the only adult. In the hiragana episode, Mothra finishes watering her garden, and decides to invite the other residents of Monster Island to a picnic. Godzilla and Anguirus both arrive late, and reveal that they couldn’t read Mothra’s invitation, so Mothra decides to teach them about the hiragana alphabet. Mothra presents the kaiju with various objects and animals, and teaches them to sound out their names with hiragana characters.

In the addition episode, Mothra helps Godzilla, Gojirin, and Baragon rescue Anguirus from Mechagodzilla, who has kidnapped him to force him to be his friend. Gojirin reveals that she is hungry and the kaiju decide to eat before traveling to the volcano where Mechagodzilla brought Anguirus. Mothra and Rodan help the kaiju add the number of items of food they have, allowing them to learn addition. On the way to the volcano, the monsters are stopped by a large group of ants, who angrily stab Godzilla with spears when he attempts to scare them away. Mothra talks to the ants, and learns that the kaiju were walking over a field of flowers, and the ants were trying to stop them. The kaiju then proceed to the volcano, where Mechagodzilla forces them to take part in a game show where they solve addition problems in order to rescue Anguirus. After the kaiju complete the game, Mechagodzilla begins to cry, and Mothra comforts him. Mothra convinces the other kaiju to let Mechagodzilla be their friend, and they all then take part in a song about addition.

Godzilla Island [ edit | edit source ]

In the series Godzilla Island, Mothra is a resident of Godzilla Island along with Earth’s other monsters. She has two children, a son named Mothra Leo and a daughter named Baby Mothra. Following Mothra’s death, Leo grew into his imago form and watched over Baby Mothra, protecting her from enemy monsters like Battra.

Millennium era [ edit | edit source ]

Mothra appeared in three of the Millennium series films, Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, Godzilla: Tokyo SOS and Godzilla Final Wars, making her the only monster besides Godzilla himself to appear in more than two films in the Millennium series.

Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack [ edit | edit source ]

In 2002, a group of teenagers disturbed Mothra’s shrine after robbing a convenience store near Lake Ikeda. Mothra awakened and pulled the teenagers underwater, wrapping their bodies in a cocoon of silk. Mothra then encased herself in a cocoon which sat on the lake’s surface. When the prophet Hirotoshi Isayama called upon the guardian monsters to stop Godzilla, Mothra emerged from her cocoon and flew to Yokohama to battle him. Mothra perched atop the Yokohama Landmark Tower and flew at Godzilla, firing poisonous stingers at him and scratching his face with her claws. Godzilla fired his atomic breath at Mothra, but she avoided the blast, which struck and destroyed the Landmark Tower instead. Ghidorah arrived shortly afterward and joined forces with Mothra against Godzilla. Godzilla easily overpowered both monsters, knocking Ghidorah unconscious and sending Mothra flying into a railroad track after she deflected his atomic breath from striking Ghidorah. Godzilla turned his attention to the JSDF’s battleships in Tokyo Bay, but Mothra flew behind him to take him by surprise. However, Godzilla turned his head at the last moment and fired his atomic breath at Mothra, vaporizing her. Mothra’s life force flowed into Ghidorah’s body, reviving him as the Thousand-Year-Old Dragon, King Ghidorah and giving him an advantage in the fight.

When King Ghidorah was ultimately killed by Godzilla, the spirit of all three guardian monsters flew into Godzilla, causing him to sink underwater and allowing the Satsuma to fire a D-03 Missile from within Godzilla’s body, opening a gaping wound on his neck that ultimately caused Godzilla to destroy himself when he fired his atomic breath.

Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla [ edit | edit source ]

When a second Godzilla attacked Japan in 1999, the Prime Minister of Japan and the Minister of Science and Technology discussed how ever since the first Godzilla attacked Tokyo in 1954, giant monsters have often raided the country. One such monster was Mothra, who attacked Tokyo in 1961.

Godzilla: Tokyo SOS [ edit | edit source ]

Mothra was sighted flying over the skies of Japan, prompting two fighter jets to try and shoot her down. Mothra was unaffected by the jets’ missiles and continued flying to Japan. Mothra landed near the home of Shinichi Chujo, a man who had helped reunite Mothra with her Shobijin in 1961. The Shobijin appeared to Chujo and asked him to tell the government to scrap the Kiryu project, which utilized the remains of the first Godzilla as a weapon. The Shobijin claimed this was a crime against nature and the sanctity of life, and that Mothra would be forced to declare war against humanity if the first Godzilla’s remains were not returned to the sea. They also promised that Mothra would take it upon herself to defend Japan from Godzilla. When Chujo told his story to Prime Minister Hayato Igarashi, he regretfully told Chujo that the government could not afford to scrap the project, as too much had already been sacrificed for it. When Godzilla appeared in Tokyo, Chujo’s grandson Shun used school desks to recreate Mothra’s symbol and summon her to Tokyo. Mothra engaged in battle with Godzilla, but due to her old age was easily overwhelmed. Igarashi ordered Kiryu to be launched to aid Mothra, and the machine entered the battle as well. Godzilla defeated Kiryu, while Mothra’s egg on Infant Island hatched into two twin larvae. The larvae arrived in Tokyo to communicate with their mother, but Godzilla noticed them. Godzilla fired his atomic breath at the larvae, only for Mothra to fly in front of the beam, sacrificing herself for her children. Enraged with grief, the larvae attacked Godzilla, distracting him while Kiryu was repaired. Kiryu soon re-entered the battle, defeating Godzilla by using his drill hand to open a previously-inflicted wound on Godzilla’s chest. Mothra’s larvae encased Godzilla in silk, leaving him trapped and helpless. Rather than kill Godzilla, Kiryu overrode his programming and carried Godzilla out to the sea, sinking them both in the Japan Trench. Mothra’s larvae swam back to Infant Island with the Shobijin, content that the souls of the dead could now rest in peace.

Godzilla Final Wars [ edit | edit source ]

Thousands of years ago, Mothra defended the Earth from an alien monster known as Gigan, defeating him and entombing him off the coast of Hokkaido. In the year 20XX, the Earth Defense Force recovered Gigan’s mummified remains, drawing the attention of Mothra and her Shobijin. The Shobijin appeared to several members of the EDF and warned them that Gigan was evil and could awaken, but promised that Mothra would appear to defend the Earth. When the alien force known as the Xiliens took control of Gigan and an army of monsters and used them to conquer the planet, Mothra flew to Tokyo to aid Godzilla against Gigan and Monster X. Mothra saved Godzilla from being double-teamed by the enemy monsters, then confronted Gigan once again. Gigan fired two razor discs at Mothra, but she used her reflective scales to avoid them. Gigan responded by blasting Mothra with his laser beam, causing her to erupt in flames. Believing himself victorious, Gigan turned around only for his head to be sliced off by his reflected razor discs. Mothra, still on fire, flew into the headless Gigan and exploded, seemingly killing them both.

The film’s end credits show an unharmed Mothra flying back to Infant Island, although it is possible this is simply unused footage and not meant to suggest Mothra survived her battle with Gigan, similar to how footage of Hedorah destroying Tokyo is also shown during the end credits.

Reiwa era [ edit | edit source ]

GODZILLA: City on the Edge of Battle [ edit | edit source ]

20,000 years after the fall of mankind at the hands of the kaiju, Mothra’s surviving egg was kept in the underground temple of the Houtua civilization, which lived in the shadow of Godzilla Earth in a caldera under Mount Fuji. The twin priestesses Maina and Miana tended to the egg, telepathically transmitting its messages to their people. When the Houtua captured several United Earth troops which had returned to reclaim the Earth, they brought them into the temple to interrogate them. Maina and Miana placed their hands on Mothra’s egg and telepathically asked the United Earth forces what their purpose was and why they had set fire to the Houtua’s land. Captain Haruo Sakaki explained that they had come to destroy Godzilla. The twins responded that Godzilla was the enemy of Mothra, their God, and had killed her, leaving only the egg behind. The Houtua determined that the United Earth forces were not hostile, and the elder Munak allowed them to leave. Later, Maina and Miana tried to appeal to the rest of their people to help the United Earth troops before they were destroyed by Godzilla, but Munak stated that Mothra’s egg proclaimed nothing. The twins then took matters into their own hands and traveled to Mechagodzilla City to help Haruo and his allies.

GODZILLA: The Planet Eater [ edit | edit source ]

When Metphies summoned Ghidorah to Earth and tried to telepathically convince Haruo to become his messenger to the rest of mankind, Maina and Martin Lazzari placed their hands on Mothra’s egg to try and reach Haruo. When their message reached Haruo, it entered his telepathic vision and manifested into a vision of Mothra which flew over the Boeing B-29 Superfortress that Haruo and Metphies were inside, destroying it and causing Haruo to begin falling through the sky. As he fell, he saw Mothra flying overhead and remarked that she looked like a «butterfly.» Maina soon appeared to Haruo in the vision, giving him the strength necessary to finally free himself from Metphies’ telepathic manipulation. With the help of Mothra, Maina, and Martin, Haruo was able to overcome Metphies’ influence and defeat him, severing Ghidorah’s connection to reality and allowing Godzilla Earth to banish him back to the Void.

Godzilla Singular Point [ edit | edit source ]

«Explorer» [ edit | edit source ]

While the Otaki Factory crew were heading towards Godzilla Ultima, a Mothra landed on Jet Jaguar’s arm and flew away not long after that. A swarm of Mothra later appeared, with each Mothra leaving yellow shiny particles behind. Goro Otaki noted that yellow butterflies are a sign of warfare.

MonsterVerse [ edit | edit source ]

Kong: Skull Island [ edit | edit source ]

After their adventure on Skull Island, Monarch members Houston Brooks and Lin San showed James Conrad and Mason Weaver a cave painting of Mothra, along with paintings depicting Godzilla, Rodan and King Ghidorah, as proof that the inhabitants of Skull Island were not the only monsters in the world. Mothra was depicted as entirely white in color and surrounded by worshipers in her painting.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters [ edit | edit source ]

While discussing the completion of her sonar device the ORCA, Monarch’s Dr. Emma Russell and her daughter Madison overheard Mothra’s roar from their dwelling built in China’s Yunnan rainforest. Emma was contacted and told to report immediately to Outpost 56, the Temple of the Moth. Upon arrival, they were greeted by entomologist Dr. Tim Mancini, who explained that Mothra’s radiation levels have suddenly skyrocketed after she was sleeping peacefully just before. As they entered an observation room overlooking a huge chamber, they witnessed Mothra’s glowing blue egg begin to pulse and shift before a huge mass burst from it. Shaking the amniotic fluid from her body, Mothra’s larval form finally hatched. Monarch attempted to put a containment field around Mothra, but their systems inexplicably shut down, as if they were being sabotaged by an outside party. Seeing the armed soldiers surrounding her, Mothra began to panic as the soft blue bioluminescent glow being emitted from her body shifted to a red glow. Mothra began to thrash about, spitting silk at the guards and grabbing one guard in her mouth before throwing him into a wall. Emma ran into the chamber with the ORCA and activated it, trying to use it to calm Mothra. As Emma struggled to find the right sonar pattern, Mothra became aggressive and began spitting silk at her. Madison ran into the chamber after her mother, and watched as Mothra was bearing down on both of them. Fortunately, Emma successfully pacified Mothra with the ORCA, and her glow returned once again to the peaceful blue color from when she hatched. Emma and Madison were able to approach Mothra, and Madison placed her hand on the monster’s face. Mothra blew air through her nostrils that blew both Emma and Madison back. This peaceful communion between man and monster was interrupted however when a bomb was detonated in the observation room. A group of armed mercenaries entered and gunned down most of the Monarch personnel, then absconded with Emma, Madison, and the ORCA. Mothra subsequently escaped the temple and cocooned herself under a nearby waterfall.

In their quest to retrieve the ORCA, Monarch came to realize that Emma had been in league with the eco-terrorist group, led by Alan Jonah, and intended to use the ORCA to reawaken the Titans around the globe in order to restore balance to nature before the government could exterminate them. The first Titan they unleashed, King Ghidorah, proved to not belong to the natural order like the others and emitted a call that awakened all of the other Titans around the world. Each of these Titans responded to Ghidorah’s call and began doing his bidding, converting the planet’s ecosystem to his liking by causing destruction across the globe. However, Mothra did not respond to Ghidorah’s call as she emerged from her cocoon in her imago stage. Monarch’s Dr. Ling and Dr. Houston Brooks watched as the imago Mothra spread her glowing wings. Mothra made her way to Monarch’s Castle Bravo underwater base, where Monarch and the U.S. military were discussing countermeasures against Ghidorah and the other Titans now that Godzilla was seemingly killed by the experimental Oxygen Destroyer weapon that failed to harm Ghidorah. Mothra emitted blinding white bioluminescence from her wings that parted the surrounding stormclouds and revealed her presence to everyone in the base. Monarch discovered that Mothra was using sonar to communicate, and that Godzilla was responding from somewhere. Using her bioluminescent God Rays as a beacon, Mothra led Monarch to Godzilla’s location. The submarine they were traveling in was pulled inside the Hollow Earth, where they found an ancient sunken city which contained Godzilla’s lair. Dr. Ishiro Serizawa sacrificed himself to detonate one of the sub’s nuclear torpedoes next to Godzilla, with the radiation revitalizing him and allowing him to fight once more.

Godzilla made his way to Boston to confront Ghidorah, supported by the military. Mothra arrived not long after and assisted Godzilla by pinning Ghidorah’s heads against a building with her silk attack. Godzilla tackled Ghidorah through the building, but before he could attack again Ghidorah summoned Rodan to support him. Rodan intercepted Mothra, and the two flying Titans engaged in an aerial battle across the city as Godzilla and Ghidorah continued to fight on the ground. The molten magma emitted from Rodan’s wings burned Mothra’s own, causing her to eventually lose her ability to fly. Rodan sent Mothra crashing into a nearby skyscraper, but she used her claws to knock him off and climbed to the top. Rodan flew back around and pinned Mothra to the top of the skyscraper, trying to stab her with his beak. Mothra dodged his attacks and used her stinger to pierce directly through Rodan’s chest. Immobilized by the sting, Rodan fell backward down into the burning city below, shrieking in rage. When Ghidorah dropped Godzilla from the sky and seriously injured him, Mothra intervened by weakly climbing onto Godzilla as Ghidorah closed in. She spread her wings to shield Godzilla, then flew directly at Ghidorah who easily disintegrated her with his gravity beams. Mothra’s energy floated down onto Godzilla, causing glowing orange cracks to begin forming in his skin. Ultimately, Mothra’s energy provided Godzilla with a huge boost in power which caused his entire body to become covered in these glowing patterns and emit intense heat. Godzilla used his new power to finish Ghidorah once and for all. His dorsal fins sparked with energy as he launched forth a burning nuclear pulse of energy which took the shape of Mothra’s wings and made the sound of her roar. This pulse incinerated both of Ghidorah’s wings, after which Godzilla fired another pulse that melted his left and right heads. Godzilla stomped onto Ghidorah’s chest as the energy inside him built to critical levels and exploded. When the smoke cleared, Godzilla emerged victorious from the rubble, holding Ghidorah’s remaining head in his jaws. Godzilla incinerated this head with his atomic breath before being confronted by Rodan and the other Titans which Ghidorah had controlled. With Ghidorah gone, the Titans all one by one submitted to Godzilla, accepting him as the new King of the Monsters.

Under Godzilla’s leadership, the Titans became peaceful and helped to restore damaged ecosystems across the globe. Monarch also discovered a Titan egg, which was speculated to be either another Mothra, or something else entirely.

Abilities [ edit | edit source ]

Physical abilities [ edit | edit source ]

In her larval stage, Mothra’s primary form of physical attack involves using her mandibles to bite opponents. Typically she bites onto an enemy’s tail, causing them physical pain while she holds on.

In her imago stage, Mothra slams her massive body into enemies and sometimes strikes them with her wings. She also uses her sharp claws to scratch or stab opponents. Mothra’s surprising levels of physical strength allow her to drag and even lift monsters like Godzilla.

Scales [ edit | edit source ]

Typically, Mothra emits «scales» scales from her wings as a last resort, a yellow poisonous powder that can incapacitate enemies. In Mothra vs. Godzilla, Mothra’s scales only served to asphyxiate Godzilla and cause him to fall over, while in subsequent incarnations her scales have been given the ability to reflect attacks back at her enemies. In Godzilla vs. Mothra, Mothra can use her scales to create a 3-D mirror which causes beam weapons to repeatedly rebound before striking the target, effectively making them impossible to miss. Battra took advantage of this ability to attack Godzilla by firing his Prism Beams into the scales, allowing them to strike Godzilla over and over again. However, the scales failed to stop Godzilla’s Nuclear Pulse, which sent Mothra flying. In Godzilla: Tokyo SOS, both missiles from a fighter jet and Godzilla’s atomic breath ignited her scales on contact, damaging the latter while leaving her unharmed. In Godzilla Final Wars, they caused Gigan’s Bladed Slicers to malfunction, severing his own head. In GODZILLA: Project Mechagodzilla, her scales interfere with Godzilla’s Asymmetrically Permeable Shield, rendering him defenseless as the scales reflect his atomic breath back at him, injuring him.

Telepathy [ edit | edit source ]

Mothra possesses telepathic abilities which she can use to communicate with her Shobijin across great distances.

Silk [ edit | edit source ]

Mothra can spit a stream of silk at her enemies to either disorient or entrap them. Usually this ability can only be used in her larval stage, but in the MonsterVerse she is able to use her silk attack even as an imago.

Wind [ edit | edit source ]

In her imago stage, Mothra can flap her wings to create gales which tear apart buildings and knock other kaiju down.

Antenna Beams [ edit | edit source ]

In Godzilla vs. Mothra and Rebirth of Mothra, Mothra can fire laser beams from her antennae. In Rebirth of Mothra, this attack is called the Beam Pulser.

Lightning [ edit | edit source ]

In Godzilla vs. Mothra, Mothra can fire arcs of lightning through her wings or release this electrical energy through her touch.

Stinger [ edit | edit source ]

In GMK, Mothra can fire a hail of poisonous dart-like stingers from her abdomen. In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, she instead possesses a single larger stinger attached to her abdomen which can immobilize enemies pierced by it.

Flight [ edit | edit source ]

Mothra is capable of flight, usually at supersonic speeds, while in her imago stage.

Eye beams [ edit | edit source ]

In Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, Mothra fires blue beams from her eyes during her fight against Battra on Infant Island. Mothra has a similar attack in the NES game, Godzilla Monster of Monsters!

Stinger Blast [ edit | edit source ]

In the games Godzilla: Save the Earth and Godzilla: Unleashed, while in her imago form, Mothra can shoot white balls of energy from her rear that hone in on targets before exploding. In Save the Earth specifically, Mothra also uses this technique to enhance some of her melee attacks.

Cry for Peace [ edit | edit source ]

In the Pipeworks Godzilla games, while in her imago form, Mothra can send out a rainbow colored shockwave while crying out loudly. Opponents caught in the shockwave receive minor damage but are stunned for a couple of seconds. This ability requires a fair amount of energy to use.

Mothra’s Fairies: Shobijin, Cosmos, Elias, Maina and Miana [ edit | edit source ]

Mothra is usually accompanied by two tiny priestesses or fairies (often called Shobijin, Japanese for «small beauties») who also speak for her. For Mothra’s first three film appearances these twin fairies were played by the Peanuts, the singing duo of Emi and Yumi Ito. In Mothra, they demonstrate telepathic abilities, within speaking range with people and over great distances with Mothra. They explain that while they call to Mothra in prayer and in song, they and Mothra are also connected on some deeper level beyond their control, and it is this connection that impels Mothra to find them no matter where they are. These qualities are part of the continuity of all subsequent Mothra appearances. In Mothra vs. Godzilla the Shobijin also demonstrate teleportation, when trying to escape from Kumayama and Jiro Torahata. In Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster the Shobijin translate not only Mothra’s chirps but an entire conversation among her, Godzilla, and Rodan. In Ebirah, Horror of the Deep, the Shobijin are now played by Pair Bambi, but still demonstrate the same telepathic bond with Mothra. Decades later, in Godzilla: Tokyo SOS, two other Shobijin (portrayed by Masami Nagasawa and Chihiro Ôtsuka) demonstrate telekinesis as well.

In the Heisei series, Mothra’s priestesses (played by Keiko Imamura and Sayaka Osawa) identify themselves as Earth’s Cosmos, who claim to have been created by the very life force of Earth, along with Mothra and her dark counterpart Battra. The Cosmos speak not only for Mothra, but for the living Earth as well. The Cosmos say that Battra was first created by the Earth to balance the ecosystem, which was disrupted by the climate-altering device of an advanced civilization, 12,000 years ago. However, Battra proved to be a little too enthusiastic about his task, and attempted to wipe out all of mankind. Mothra, who lived in harmony with humanity, fought Battra to stop his rampage. While the Cosmos are connected to Mothra, they are aware of Battra’s activity. They know when Battra has awoken, and what his tasks and motivations are, but Battra is not motivated to seek them out, unlike Mothra, who seems compelled to protect them and talks to them directly.

In the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy, Mothra’s priestesses were the Elias; the Elias differ from earlier incarnations in that they are not mind-linked twins but individual persons, Moll and Lora. They are also seen to have an older sister, a dark Elias called Belvera. In addition to accompanying Mothra, the Elias would also ride a smaller Mothra called Fairy. Mothra would reprise the role of ancient guardian, though with only a passing homage to the Shobijin, in Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. The Shobijin reappear in Godzilla: Tokyo SOS, and identify themselves as descendants of the two Shobijin who accompanied Mothra in 1961. They appear to Shinichi Chujo and plead with him to convince the Japanese government to return the first Godzilla’s remains to the sea. In Godzilla Final Wars, the Shobijin appear to a group of humans and warn them that the cyborg monster recently uncovered by the Earth Defense Force, Gigan, is an ancient enemy of Mothra who attempted to destroy the Earth. They later summon Mothra to aid Godzilla against Gigan and Monster X.

Two characters based on the Shobijin, Maina and Miana, are featured in the GODZILLA anime trilogy. They are twin sisters and members of the Houtua, a tribe descended from a group of humans that Mothra defended from Godzilla 20,000 years ago and helped to relocate to the Mount Fuji area. Like the Shobijin, Maina and Miana are telepathically bonded to Mothra, in this case her surviving egg, and serve as her priestesses and communicate her messages to others. Maina and Miana are distinct from the Shobijin in that rather than being tiny compared to humans, they are human-sized like the rest of their race.

Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee [ edit | edit source ]

Mothra appeared as a summonable monster in Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee. A Mothra-shaped icon, when picked up, calls in a «Mothra Airstrike,» where she flies around the arena firing her antennae beams at all monsters besides the one who retrieved the item. She does little damage with each attack, but can add up. Mothra can be chased off if hit with a beam weapon, but this is difficult to do. Mothra is playable in the game’s Game Boy Advance counterpart, Godzilla: Domination!, and was also playable in Godzilla: Monster of Monsters!. She was also a boss in Godzilla Generations: Maximum Impact.

Mothra became playable once again in Godzilla: Save the Earth. Players start as a larval Mothra, who is slow and has a high defense and a moderate attack. Larva Mothra can use her Silk Shot to immobilize foes, and can spear with her tail and roll around the arena to attack. Pressing R2 and L2 at the same time causes her to metamorph into adult Mothra. Trading speed for defense and attack for weapons, Mothra relies on long-range assaults and a good strategy. She can reflect most beam weapons away from her, and stun opponents when getting up or with a greenish mist. Mothra is unique in that she does not enter Rage Mode, instead she treats the Rage power-up as Health and Energy Recover.

Mothra is also playable in Godzilla: Unleashed, and played similarly to Save the Earth, but to morph into adult form, the player must press A, B, C, and Z at the same time instead of R2 and L2. Mothra appears in Godzilla 2: War of the Monsters. In early missions she is an enemy, but in later missions will appear as a friendly unit if her egg is found (being near the egg heals her). Both her adult and larva forms appear in the game.

Godzilla: Unleashed [ edit | edit source ]

Height: 20 meters
Weight: 28,000 tons

«Mothra is a guardian of the earth, and only exists to defend the earth from pollution, corruption and devastation. Mothra begins life as a giant larvae, with a barbed tail and a web-spinning snout. Once danger threatens, however, Mothra cocoons herself and transforms into her flying adult form. As an adult, Mothra creates powerful gusts of wind from her wings and create clouds from her scales to reflect energy attacks. Although her wings appear frail, Mothra is a very capable melee opponent, using her superior mobility to strike her opponents quickly and then retreat. Mothra is devoted to rooting out the crystal corruption, and abhors monsters who absorb their energies for personal advancement.»

Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001)

Another continuity reboot to the series, GMK is directed by the Gamera trilogy’s Shusuke Kaneko. When Godzilla returns to seek revenge on Japan for all of the souls lost during the Pacific War, the mystical Professor Hirotoshi Isayama awakens the three Guardian Monsters to stop him: Baragon, Mothra, and Ghidorah. As Godzilla makes his way to Tokyo, Japan must place its hope in the Guardian Monsters to triumph over the God of Destruction before he can enact his terrible vengeance. GMK proved to be a box office success, extending the Millennium series for three more films. It was followed by Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla in 2002.

Plot [ edit | edit source ]

Admiral Taizo Tachibana is speaking to a group of JSDF soldiers about the greatest threat they have ever faced: Godzilla. In 1954, Godzilla appeared and laid waste to Tokyo, and was later finally killed by the JSDF. Tachibana warns that even though the creature was successfully defeated, the JSDF need to be prepared. Recently, a giant monster similar to Godzilla attacked New York City, and ever since then sightings of giant monsters around the globe have skyrocketed. Tachibana dismisses the troops, and is informed by another officer that an American nuclear submarine has disappeared in the waters off Guam. The JSDF deploys the research submersible Satsuma to search for the sub. The Satsuma finds the sub’s wreckage, with what appear to be huge claw marks in its hull. Suddenly, a violent wave causes the Satsuma‘s sister craft to crash into a rock and explode. The Satsuma‘s operator then catches a glimpse of huge glowing dorsal fins passing behind nearby rocks.

Meanwhile, Yuri Tachibana, the Admiral’s daughter, is filming a fake documentary about a monster that supposedly lives near Mount Myoko. Yuri and her film crew are approached by the mayor of a local village, who tells them to stop filming immediately. Yuri tries to convince the man that the documentary could attract publicity to the village, telling him to imagine if Godzilla appeared in the village. Suddenly, a small earthquake strikes the area, which is enough to sway the mayor to allow filming to continue. Later, Yuri is at a restaurant with her coworkers, where she laments the fact that as a woman she feels she isn’t allowed to pursue the stories she wants. One of Yuri’s friends, Mitsuaki Takeda, arrives at the restaurant and tells Yuri about a legend involving three guardian monsters that defended Japan in ancient times. Sometime later, Takeda brings Yuri, now extremely drunk, back to her and her father’s apartment. Takeda is greeted at the door by Admiral Tachibana, who apologizes for his daughter’s behavior and brings her inside. Back at Mt. Myoko, the village mayor is sitting in a car with his mistress, telling her about the publicity the documentary will bring to their village. They are interrupted when a group of motorcyclists arrive and circle the car. The bikers damage some nearby property, including a small shrine, and then drive away. The bikers drive through a tunnel, which suddenly collapses and buries them all alive. A truck driver witnesses the event, and sees the head of a huge monster inside the tunnel. The next morning, the JSDF arrive and use D-03 Missiles to try and dig the bodies from the rubble. Investigators question the truck driver about the incident, and he claims that it was caused by Godzilla. Another incident occurs at Lake Ikeda, where a group of teenagers on a road trip have robbed a nearby convenience store and set up camp on the lake shore, in the process destroying another shrine. A few of the hooligans try to take a dog out into the lake in order to drown it, but their boats are overturned and they are all pulled underwater. A huge brown larva then surfaces from the lake. In the morning, a huge cocoon has appeared on the lake’s surface, while the teenagers’ bodies are trapped in a smaller cocoon.

Yuri, Takeda and another coworker visit a police station in the area, where a strange old man has been detained for defacing shrines. Yuri meets with the man, who claims that Godzilla will soon return to seek horrible vengeance against Japan for all of the atrocities committed by the nation during World War II. He states that no weapons can stop Godzilla, but if the three Guardian Monsters are awakened, then maybe together they can defeat him. In the Bonin Islands, Godzilla comes ashore during a typhoon and causes severe property damage. The JSDF is alerted to the incident, and immediately begins searching the waters around Japan for Godzilla. Yuri and Takeda visit Admiral Tachibana to tell him about the Guardian Monsters, but he dismisses the story. Tachibana then recalls his childhood, when he was present as Godzilla raided Tokyo in 1954. Tachibana lost both of his parents in the attack, and is still haunted by the memories of Godzilla and the cries of the monster’s victims. In the Aokigahara forest near Mount Fuji, a suicidal businessman tries to hang himself from a tree with his tie. The man stands atop a fallen shrine, only for the ground beneath him to collapse and cause him to fall into a cavern. Inside he sees a giant three-headed dragon seemingly frozen in ice. The man promptly travels to the police station to tell of what he saw, but the police don’t believe him. Just then, an earthquake strikes, and the monster from Mt. Myoko surfaces. The creature frees the mysterious old man from the police station, and begins wandering through the countryside. Concurrently, Godzilla surfaces from Yaizu harbor and comes ashore. Godzilla rampages through a nearby town, and uses his atomic breath to obliterate a crowd of civilians. The JSDF is initially unable to tell which monster is Godzilla, but Yuri and Takeda identify the monster from Mt. Myoko as Baragon, one of the three Guardian Monsters. They determine that Baragon is going to try and fight Godzilla. Eventually, both monsters converge in a forested area and begin fighting. Baragon tries to outmaneuver Godzilla by burrowing underneath him, but Godzilla gains the upper hand with his brute strength. Godzilla begins stomping Baragon into the ground, then blasts him with his atomic breath when he tries to flee. Godzilla blasts Baragon a second time, causing the monster to explode. Godzilla then continues his march across Japan, heading straight for Tokyo once again.

The JSDF tries unsuccessfully to stop Godzilla with fighter jets, as their weapons have no effect against the creature, and they are promptly destroyed by his atomic breath. When Tachibana asks how the JSDF was able to kill Godzilla in 1954, a superior informs him that Godzilla was actually killed by an experimental chemical weapon, whose inventor has since died. The government chose to cover up the truth and have the JSDF claim credit for the monster’s defeat, so as to reassure the public. Yuri takes a bicycle and follows Godzilla, videotaping him from a safe distance. As Godzilla approaches Yokohama, the cocoon on Lake Ikeda splits open and the imago form of Mothra, another Guardian Monster, emerges. The old man travels to the cavern in Aokigahara and awakens the final Guardian Monster, Ghidorah, who travels to Yokohama as well. The JSDF places battleships in Tokyo Bay and sets up a defense line in Yokohama in preparation for Godzilla’s arrival. When Godzilla arrives, he is attacked by Mothra, who fires poisonous stingers into his face. Godzilla fires his atomic breath at the giant insect, but Mothra is able to evade it. One blast of Godzilla’s atomic breath misses Mothra and strikes the Yokohama Landmark Tower, killing the soldiers stationed inside. Mothra attacks Godzilla from behind, landing on his head and scratching his face. Ghidorah then arrives in the city and enters the battle, biting Godzilla and discharging electricity through his bite. Godzilla is able to overpower both monsters, biting down on Ghidorah’s neck and then slamming him onto a building, and blasting Mothra away with his atomic breath. As Godzilla prepares to finish Ghidorah with his atomic breath, Mothra flies into the way and absorbs the blast, sending her flying several blocks away. His enemies subdued, Godzilla turns his attention to the JSDF, and promptly wipes their forces out with his atomic breath. As Godzilla prepares to destroy the battleship on which Admiral Tachibana is, Mothra tries to attack him from behind, only for Godzilla to turn around and completely destroy her with his atomic breath. However, Mothra’s energy flows into the unconscious Ghidorah, reviving him as the Thousand-Year-Old Dragon, King Ghidorah. King Ghidorah takes flight, surrounded by a golden shield of energy. Godzilla fires his atomic breath at King Ghidorah, but the dragon’s shield deflects it. King Ghidorah then releases a ball of energy at Godzilla, blasting him out of the city and into the bay.

As King Ghidorah battles Godzilla, Admiral Tachibana and Commander Yutaka Hirose dive into the bay in an attempt to fire D-03 Missiles at Godzilla. Yuri reunites with Takeda and the two of them go onto the Yokohama Bay Bridge to film the battle. Commander Hirose fires a missile from his ship, but Godzilla gets out of the way. The missile hits King Ghidorah instead, knocking him out. A stray blast of Godzilla’s atomic breath destroys the bridge, sending Yuri and Takeda falling into the bay. An ancient stone falls out of Yuri’s pocket, and re-energizes King Ghidorah, who flies to the surface. When Godzilla surfaces, King Ghidorah begins blasting him with gravity beams fired from his mouths. After withstanding several hits, Godzilla absorbs the energy from King Ghidorah’s gravity beams and combines it with his atomic breath, then destroys King Ghidorah with a spiral-wrapped atomic beam. The spirits of all three Guardian Monsters materialize in the sky, then flow into Godzilla, causing him to sink underwater. While underwater, Godzilla swallows the Satsuma, with Tachibana still inside. Tachibana is knocked unconscious and the sub is damaged, but he regains consciousness after seeing a vision of Yuri. Tachibana then fires a D-03 Missile into a wound on Godzilla’s chest inflicted by King Ghidorah from the inside. Godzilla surfaces and prepares to fire his atomic breath at Yuri and Takeda, but the missile drills through his chest wound and explodes, expanding the wound and causing Godzilla to roar in agony. Godzilla promptly charges his atomic breath again, but when he tries to fire it it instead fires from the wound on his chest. Godzilla tries again, and the same thing happens, causing him to fall back underwater. As Godzilla sinks to the sea floor, the Satsuma manages to escape from the monster’s body. Godzilla charges his atomic breath again underwater and tries to fire it at the Satsuma, but the pressure from his previous attempts builds to critical levels and he explodes. The JSDF celebrates as Godzilla completely disappears from all tracking systems. After learning that Yuri is okay, her boss Haruki Kadokura decides to try and arrange an interview with the old man Yuri interviewed, but a coworker tells him that the man, Hirotoshi Isayama, has been dead for almost 50 years, and has disappeared completely from the interview tape. The Satsuma surfaces, and Tachibana exits the craft. As Yuri runs to embrace her father, he warns her to stay back, as he hasn’t checked the radiation levels. Yuri salutes her father, who looks out at the sea and tells Yuri not to thank him, but his comrades and the three Guardian Monsters.

Meanwhile, on the sea floor, Godzilla’s disembodied heart begins to beat continuously.

Disclaimer: This page covers all incarnations of Mothra in the continuity of the GODZILLA anime trilogy, which includes the Mothra from GODZILLA: Project Mechagodzilla, her two offspring, and the single egg in GODZILLA: The Planet Eater.

A benevolent kaiju which inhabited the Amazon rainforest, Mothra awakened after her counterpart Battra had already emerged in response to the oncoming Gorath asteroid and met his end at the hands of Godzilla. Mothra appeared to defend the last remnants of the United Earth when Godzilla attacked them at their last bastion in Buenaventura, successfully forcing him to withdraw. Mothra then worked with the survivors to transport her eggs to the former Japan where they could defend future generations and ensure mankind’s survival. Mothra lost her life to Godzilla while fighting to ensure the success of «Operation: Cradle.»

Sometime later after the eggs were successfully transplanted, they hatched and the hatchlings tried to defeat Godzilla. However, both fell, with one Mothra’s carcass crashing into a volcanic caldera where it decomposed and left behind one last egg. The Houtua, descendants of the humans who had sought refuge with Mothra’s eggs, built a temple and underground civilization around this egg, which they continued to worship nearly 20,000 years after «Operation: Cradle.» The last Mothra inside the egg was called upon to reach Haruo Sakaki inside a vision in order to free him from Metphies’ influence so he could find a way to stop Ghidorah.

Name [ edit | edit source ]

The name «Mothra» is the suffixation of «-ra» (a common last syllable in kaiju names) to «moth.» Since the Japanese language does not have dental fricatives, it is approximated «Mosura» in Japanese. Originally, Mothra’s name was approximated in English as «Mosla,» but it was later corrected to «Mothra» by the time of the release of her debut film. [1]

Personality [ edit | edit source ]

Mothra is a benevolent creature who, atypical of a kaiju, is friendly toward humanity. Mothra is suggested to have lived in harmony and seclusion with a tribe in the Amazon rainforest for many years, defending her people from threats and providing them with her healing scales. As Godzilla hunted down and exterminated the ever-dwindling human population in 2048, Mothra selflessly stepped in to defend the last bastion of human resistance from Godzilla in Buenaventura. While she was wounded in the battle, she successfully forced Godzilla to retreat and allowed her priestess Lira to reveal her presence to the rest of mankind. Mothra agreed to a proposal to relocate her eggs to Japan to ensure the survival of humanity into the future, and even gave her life for the operation’s success. Her two offspring again attempted to bring down Godzilla for humanity, but they were both slain in combat by the increasingly powerful Godzilla. Nonetheless, her surviving Egg still resides in the temple of the Houtua 20,000 years into the future, guiding her people through her priestesses Maina and Miana. While Mothra is initially hesitant to provide aid to the United Earth forces in Mechagodzilla City, refusing to make any proclamation regarding the situation, she later intervenes to help Haruo Sakaki resist Metphies’ influence and stop Ghidorah from destroying the Earth.

Origins [ edit | edit source ]

Mothra was the goddess of a human tribe which lived in the Amazon rainforest of South America and was known simply as “Mothra’s People.” They lived in harmony with Mothra, who defended them. Mothra had a counterpart known as Battra, but his egg hatched early and he was killed in battle with Godzilla. Mothra laid two eggs, which she allowed to be transported to Japan by members of the United Earth and Monster Coexistence Sect so her offspring could defend future generations of mankind there. Mothra was killed by Godzilla defending her eggs while they were being transported at sea, but “Operation: Cradle” proved successful and the eggs were successfuly relocated to Japan.

Eventually, Mothra’s eggs hatched, and the two offspring attempted to fight Godzilla. However, they were both slain in combat by the King of Monsters, with one of their carcasses crashing to the ground and opening a huge crater. When this Mothra’s body decayed, it left behind a single egg. The descendants of the humans who originally accompanied Mothra’s eggs to Japan, now evolved into a tribal race known as the Houtua after inheriting Mothra’s DNA, constructed their village inside this crater and built a temple around the egg, which they continued to worship for the next several thousand years.

History [ edit | edit source ]

With the help of Mothra, Maina, and Martin, Haruo was able to overcome Metphies’ influence and defeat him, severing his connection to Ghidorah, rendering him subject to the laws of this reality and allowing Godzilla Earth to banish him back to the Void.

Abilities [ edit | edit source ]

Scales [ edit | edit source ]

Mothra generates golden defensive scales which she drops from her wings. These wings not only reflect enemy attacks, but also interfere with Godzilla’s asymmetrically permeable shield. Using her scales, Mothra was able to make Godzilla retreat by disabling his shield and reflecting his atomic breath back at him, injuring him. Additionally, Mothra’s scales have the ability to heal wounds, and are also noted to repel insects. The Houtua, as a result of having inherited Mothra’s «monster factor,» secrete similar scales through their skin. These scales have healing properties and are used in medicinal treatment, and also grant the Houtua resistance to Godzilla’s cells and Nanometal.

Silk [ edit | edit source ]

Mothra can produce silk which is remarkably resistant to heat.

Flight [ edit | edit source ]

Mothra’s imago stage is capable of flight.

Telepathy [ edit | edit source ]

Mothra is telepathic, allowing her to communicate with her people, who have inherited her telepathic ability. When living in South America, Mothra was tended to and spoken for by the priestess Mira, who was succeeded by her granddaughter Lira. 20,000 years into the future, the surviving Mothra egg is tended by twin Houtua priestesses Maina and Miana, who act as conduits for Mothra’s messages and telepathically amplify them to recipients. Mothra’s telepathy grants her the ability to insert herself into the visions of others, even while still inside her egg. She demonstrated this ability when called upon by Maina to save Haruo Sakaki, who was trapped inside a telepathic vision brought on by Metphies in an attempt to convert him to Ghidorah’s influence. Mothra manifested in Haruo’s vision in her imago stage, obscured by silhouette, and separated Haruo from Metphies long enough for Maina and Martin Lazzari to reach him, using Mothra’s egg as a medium.

Books [ edit | edit source ]

GODZILLA: Project Mechagodzilla [ edit | edit source ]

Mothra was the guardian of an indigenous tribe known as «Mothra’s People» that lived in the Amazon rainforest in South America. She possessed healing powers and also used scales released from her wings to defend herself. She originally had a counterpart named Battra, and it was said that their combined strength would be enough to defeat Godzilla. However, Battra had awakened before Mothra in response to the approach of an asteroid called Gorath, and was killed by Godzilla. In 2048, Mothra’s People, led by the shrine maiden Lira, revealed themselves to the remaining United Earth forces which had been left behind by the Extraterrestrial Emigration Plan.

On July 31, 2048, several months after the Extraterrestrial Emigration Plan was enacted, Godzilla attacked the city of Buenaventura, where the remnants of humanity had gathered, intent on destroying the last bastion of human resistance. However, Mothra appeared to challenge Godzilla and successfully forced him to retreat following a fierce battle, in which she used her scales to reflect Godzilla’s atomic breath back at him. Because Mothra could not defeat Godzilla alone, a group known as the Monster Coexistence Sect or Cosmos, which wanted to emulate Mothra’s People and live in harmony with Mothra, proposed that Mothra’s eggs be transported to Japan so that her offspring could one day defend humans still living there. Their plan, codenamed «Operation: Cradle» and headed by Akira Sakaki, was put into action, with the USS Saratoga carrying Mothra’s eggs to Japan. Godzilla appeared and intercepted the convoy on August 15, and the injured adult Mothra fought him to her death to defend her offspring and ensure the operation’s success. [2]

Mothra (Godzilla vs. Mothra)

More roars

Not to be confused with the version of Mothra appearing in Mothra (1961) and Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964).

The guardian of the ancient world, Mothra was forced to battle a dark counterpart named Battra when he went beyond his purpose of destroying a climate controlling device and tried to eradicate all of humanity. Mothra eventually defeated Battra and laid him to rest in the North Sea, but the entire civilization she had defended was destroyed in the battle. Mothra then went to live on the remote Infant Island with the Cosmos, two miniature priestesses who were the only remnants of the ancient civilization. In 1993, the Cosmos allowed Mothra’s egg to be transported to Japan by the Marutomo Company, believing it would do more good there than on Infant Island. However, en route, the transport was attacked by Godzilla and the reawakened Battra. Mothra hatched and escaped back to her island while Godzilla and Battra battled and were swallowed by a volcanic fault in the Philippine Trench. When the Cosmos were abducted by the Marutomo Company, Mothra traveled to Tokyo to try and recover them. After the Cosmos were secured, she cocooned herself on the National Diet Building and metamorphosed into her imago stage. She then flew to Yokohama for a final showdown with Battra, who escaped from under the Earth’s crust and had matured into his imago stage. Their battle was interrupted by Godzilla, and the two divine moths were forced to settle their differences and join together against their common enemy. Together, Mothra and Battra defeated Godzilla and carried him out to sea. Battra was killed by Godzilla while carrying him, and Mothra was forced to drop both monsters in the sea below. With Battra dead, Mothra took up his mission to stop a meteor from striking the Earth in 1999, and traveled to space with the Cosmos to carry it out. In 1995, Mothra learned that an evil extraterrestrial clone of Godzilla named SpaceGodzilla was heading to Earth to conquer it, and so she sent a telepathic projection of herself called Fairy Mothra to warn Miki Saegusa of the creature’s approach. Thanks to Mothra’s warning, Miki was able to ensure Godzilla and G-Force defeated SpaceGodzilla.

Development [ edit | edit source ]

The idea to introduce Mothra into the Heisei series originated with Kazuki Omori’s screenplay for Mothra vs. Bagan. The project, planned for a 1990 theatrical release, pitted Mothra against the monster Bagan, which was originally conceptualized for Tomoyuki Tanaka’s 1980 Resurrection of Godzilla proposal. The film was intended to be set in the same universe as The Return of Godzilla and Godzilla vs. Biollante, and would even feature the character Miki Saegusa from the latter film. The story went through two revisions. In the screenplay, Mothra fights Bagan across the globe after the ancient creature is freed from his icy prison due to global warming. Mothra is assisted by her newborn larva in the final battle with Bagan and manages to subdue the creature, carrying him out to sea and sealing him away before dying from her injuries. The film was to end with a cameo by Godzilla and lead into a crossover film tentatively titled Godzilla 3. However, the disappointing box office performance of Godzilla vs. Biollante made Toho hesitant to produce a standalone Mothra film, and the idea was scrapped. Omori revived the Mothra vs. Bagan screenplay by writing Godzilla into it in place of Bagan, and titled the new story Mothra vs. Godzilla. This screenplay again went unused, as Toho revived the character of King Ghidorah for the third Heisei Godzilla film, Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah. But after a series of unrealized ideas for a follow-up, many of which included the characters Mechani-Kong and Gigamoth, Omori was given the chance to write another screenplay pitting Mothra against Godzilla. Omori’s first screenplay for Godzilla vs. Mothra was another re-edited Mothra vs. Bagan screenplay placing Godzilla into Bagan’s role. Wataru Mimura wrote a screenplay based on Mothra vs. Bagan using the Gigamoth character in Bagan’s role while giving Godzilla a completely different part in the story. This screenplay, Godzilla vs. Gigamoth, featured Mothra and Gigamoth hatching from the same egg, with Gigamoth being mutated due to pollution. The two moth monsters engaged in a three-way battle with Godzilla which ended with Gigamoth dead and Godzilla and Mothra vanishing. Mimura’s screenplay went unused but underwent further tweaks under Kazuki Omori, who turned it into the final screenplay for Godzilla vs. Mothra, with Gigamoth reworked into Battra.

A three-sided drawing of Mothra was created based on an illustration by Noriyoshi Ohrai, and this drawing became the basis of the imago Mothra prop. Keizo Murase, who had modeled the original Mothra larva and imago props for Mothra in 1961, was hired to model the new props. Murase received the order only a month before filming began, and said he was only able to complete them in time because he had been preparing for the project since the start of the year. Murase created two self-propelled Mothra larva props with built in wheels; a larger 1.6 meter-long one and a slightly smaller 1.5 meter-long one. Koichi Kawakita was upset that the wheels inside the models were so small, as he felt they didn’t allow him to capture realistic caterpillar-like movements, something he would attempt to rectify four years later for Rebirth of Mothra. The silk sprayed by the larva when creating her cocoon was created by blowing a fine Styrofoam powder from the prop’s mouth. [6] In order to give the larva a shiny lustrous body surface, Murase utilized a technique he had used for the original Mothra which was coating the prop with soft vinyl. Murase modeled two Mothra imago props based on the three-sided drawing that was provided; a larger 3.5 meter-long prop and a smaller 1.5 meter-long prop. Both props featured radio-controlled moving parts. The smaller imago prop was used in the majority of action scenes. Phosphorous powder was used to portray Mothra’s scale attack. A much smaller imago Mothra prop was used for the end of the film’s final battle when Mothra and Battra carry Godzilla out to sea.

Design [ edit | edit source ]

The Heisei Mothra retains the traditional appearance of previous Mothra incarnations, possessing both a larval and imago form. Mothra’s larval form resembles a large brown segmented caterpillar with small blue eyes. The larva’s skin is somewhat lighter and smoother than previous incarnations, and it has several dark spots on its sides. Mothra’s imago form has a more compact and rounded body, with thick bright-colored fur. Mothra has round light-blue eyes and short thick antennae, and small bird-like legs.

Personality [ edit | edit source ]

Like previous incarnations, the Heisei Mothra is a benevolent and peaceful creature concerned with defending the Earth. However, Mothra is still capable of causing destruction, which she does while trying to rescue the Cosmos from the Marutomo Company. After Mothra rescues the Cosmos, they convince her to cease causing destruction. Mothra later makes peace with her mortal enemy Battra, allowing the two kaiju to join forces against Godzilla. Following the battle, Mothra leaves Earth to fulfill a promise she made to Battra to intercept a meteor bound to strike the planet.

Origins [ edit | edit source ]

Over 12,000 years ago, Mothra was the guardian of the ancient world, and lived alongside an advanced civilization. When scientists from the civilization created a climate-controlling device, the Earth became offended and created a dark Mothra, Battra, to destroy the device. After destroying the device, Battra decided to eradicate the entirety of humanity, forcing Mothra to do battle with him. After a long battle that destroyed the entire civilization, Mothra defeated Battra and sealed him in the North Sea. Mothra then took up residence on Infant Island, along with the Cosmos, the only remnants of the ancient civilization.

History [ edit | edit source ]

It was also speculated by U.N.G.C.C. scientists that SpaceGodzilla’s creation may have been due to Mothra unwittingly carrying some of Godzilla’s flesh into outer space following their battle, allowing it to be pulled into a black hole and released through a white hole, where it merged with crystalline lifeforms and was exposed to energy from supernovas, allowing it to mutate rapidly. However, it was also theorized that SpaceGodzilla may have instead been formed by some of Biollante’s cells after she ascended to space following her second battle with Godzilla in 1990.

Abilities [ edit | edit source ]

Silk [ edit | edit source ]

In her larval form, Mothra can spit a stream of silk from her mouth. While this ability exists to allow Mothra to construct a cocoon, she utilizes it against Godzilla in combat as well. The silk seems to irritate and disorient Godzilla, and also produces smoke on contact with his skin, suggesting it may burn him.

Mandibles [ edit | edit source ]

While in her larval form, Mothra uses her mandibles to bite Godzilla. She first lunges at Godzilla and bites down on his chest, then later sneaks up behind Godzilla and bites down on his tail. This attack serves to cause Godzilla visible pain in both instances.

Amphibiousness [ edit | edit source ]

Mothra’s larval form is amphibious, capable of moving successfully both on land and in water. Mothra battles Godzilla in the ocean as soon as her egg hatches, and later swims all the way to Tokyo from Infant Island.

Antenna beams [ edit | edit source ]

In her imago stage, Mothra can fire twin orange beams from her two antennae, knocking Godzilla back and stunning him.

Arc lightning [ edit | edit source ]

While in her imago form, Mothra can release arcs of electricity from her wings, or release an electrical shock through her touch. This, unlike her antennae beams, has little effect on Godzilla.

Scales [ edit | edit source ]

Like the First Generation Mothra, the Heisei Mothra is able to release a yellowish powder-like substance from her wings. However, in the Heisei Mothra’s case this powder takes the form of shiny scales, which form a 3-D mirror around a target and reflect beam attacks. Mothra uses the scales to trap Godzilla and make his atomic breath reflect back and hit him. Mothra uses her scales against Godzilla again in tandem with Battra’s prism beams, causing the beams to bounce around within the 3-D mirror and strike Godzilla multiple times. Whereas the original Mothra lost her ability to fly after using the powder, the Heisei Mothra’s flight appears to be unaffected by the use of the scales.

Weaknesses [ edit | edit source ]

Mothra’s larval form is comparatively smaller and weaker than both Godzilla and Battra, and although she briefly holds her own against Godzilla, she is easily swatted away by Battra. Mothra’s imago stage is also outmatched by both Godzilla and Battra, and it is only through Battra’s intervention that she is able to beat Godzilla. Mothra’s scales are ineffective against Godzilla’s nuclear pulse, and she is knocked to the ground when Godzilla uses it.

A news reporter named Sakai and his photographer Junko take pictures of the wreckage caused by a typhoon. Later that day a giant egg is discovered on the shore. The local villagers salvage it and scientists come to study the egg.

While Sakai and Junko try to ask Professor Miura questions about the egg, an entrepreneur of Happy Enterprises by the name of Kumayama scurries the scientists off and explains that he bought the egg from the local villagers.

Kumayama walks into Mr. Torahata’s room, the head of Happy Enterprises. As the two are discussing the billion-dollar tourist attraction, two tiny twin girls, known as the Shobijin, interrupt them. The Shobjin explain that they are from «Mothra Island» (known in later Godzilla movies as «Infant Island») and that the egg belongs to a monster named Mothra who lives there. Torahata and Kumayama ignore the girls’ pleads and try to capture them.

The Shobjin escape the room and meet with Sakai, Junko, and Professor Miura outside the hotel. The girls beg them to bring the egg back too and the three promise to try as hard as they can to bring the egg back to Mothra Island. The girls explain that if the egg is not returned, a larva will hatch and will cause great destruction to its surroundings. Sakai tries to write editorials but «. public opinion is powerless against the law.»

The girls soon leave and even though they could not get the egg back, they thanked Sakai, Junko, and Miura for their kindness. While the three are testing for radioactivity in an industrial area, Godzilla suddenly pops out of a beach and begins to attack the surrounding cities.

The Shobjin are heard singing and everyone walks towards them. Sakai, Junko, and Miura ask the Shojobin for Mothra’s assistance but they are also turned town. Junko then pleads to all the villagers that not everyone from Japan should be blamed for what happened to their island. Godzilla is killing everyone and refusing their country assistance Sakai then adds that «we’re all human» and that everyone is connected and must help each other. Mothra’s screech is soon heard and the Shobjin ask everyone to follow them. They convince Mothra to help Japan but the monster is weak. After the monster will fight Godzilla it will have no power to return to the island.

Godzilla walks towards the egg and tries to destroy it until Mothra shows up. The two fight a tough battle where Mothra seems to have the upper hand. While on the ground, Godzilla fires his atomic ray at Mothra and badly burns one of her wings. Mothra dies with her wing resting on top of the egg. Godzilla walks away. The Shobjin then explain to Sakai, Junko, and Miura that the egg can be hatched today. The tiny twins soon begin to sing.

Meanwhile, the military tries to fight Godzilla by electrocuting him with «artificial lighting» but fail. The Shobijin continue singing and the monster egg finally hatches with not one, but two Mothra larvae. The Mothra larvae follow Godzilla to Iwa Island and use cocoon spray on Godzilla to wrap the giant monster up in a cocoon. Godzilla struggles as he becomes fully wrapped up and plunges into the ocean. The Mothra larvae celebrate and return to their island.

Godzilla vs. Mothra (1992)

Do not confuse with Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964), which has been previously released on home video in North America under the English title «Godzilla vs. Mothra.»

— North American VHS tagline

Following the box office success of Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, Godzilla vs. Mothra brings back Toho’s most popular kaiju after Godzilla himself: the giant moth goddess Mothra. After a meteorite impacts the Earth, both Godzilla and an ancient evil known as Battra are reawakened. Miniature twin fairies called the Cosmos appear to warn humanity of the danger posed by Battra, and allow the egg of their deity Mothra to be transported to Japan. En route, the transport is attacked by Godzilla, forcing Mothra to hatch and fend for herself. When Battra arrives, it becomes a three-way battle between the monsters, each intent on destroying the others. This culminates in a final showdown in Yokohama between Godzilla and the imago stages of both Mothra and Battra, who find that they must work together in order to overcome their common foe. Godzilla vs. Mothra was followed by Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II in 1993.

Plot [ edit | edit source ]

In 1993, a huge meteor strikes the Earth near the Ogasawara Trench, awakening Godzilla, who was hibernating there. The impact triggers a series of earthquakes and typhoons across the Pacific Ocean, unearthing a gigantic egg on an Indonesian island. Meanwhile, thief and ex-archaeologist Takuya Fujito explores an ancient temple in Thailand, searching for a valuable artifact. Takuya finds the artifact, but triggers the temple to begin collapsing. Takuya barely escapes with his life, but is immediately apprehended by Thai authorities. Takuya is visited in prison by Japanese government secretary Ruzo Dobashi, Marutomo Company employee Kenji Ando, and his ex-wife Masako Tezuka. They inform him that the Marutomo Company is developing an island in Indonesia, with the backing of the Japanese government. Recent satellite scans of the island have revealed a bizarre huge object, which Ando and Masako are being sent to investigate. If Takuya assists them in the expedition, he will be set free from prison. Takuya refuses at first, believing the Japanese consulate will set him free anyway, but quickly changes his mind after learning he may be held in prison for up to 15 years. In Japan, Dobashi informs Environmental Planning Bureau Chief Joji Minamino of the expedition, but Minamino is more concerned about the natural disasters the meteor has been triggering. Minamino and Dobashi meet with Miki Saegusa, who informs them that Godzilla has been roused from his hibernation in the Ogasawara Trench by the meteor, and is at large once again.

After departing from Bangkok via a boat, Takuya, Masako and Ando arrive at the Indonesian island, known as Infant Island. The three come ashore on the island, which is covered in dense jungles and seemingly uninhabited. As they explore, they come upon a section of the island that has been cleared by the Marutomo Company, leading them to remark that man is destroying what nature has taken thousands of years to build. After further exploring, the three come upon a rickety bridge spanning a river. Takuya insists they can all safely make it across, but as they cross the bridge snaps and leaves the three dangling over the river. At Takuya’s insistence, they all jump into the river below one-by-one. Takuya then consults the map of the island, and realizes they will reach their destination faster by traveling upriver. After canoeing up the river for several hours, the three set up camp for the night. As they sit by the fire, Masako gives Takuya a letter written to him by their daughter, Midori. Midori is unaware that Takuya is a thief, as Masako doesn’t want her to know. The next morning, Takuya finds a large cave near the camp, and wakes both Masako and Ando so they can investigate. Inside the cave, they see several ancient paintings, one of which depicts two huge moths locked in battle. As the sun passes overhead, it shines through a hole in the wall and casts light on a path outside the cave. The three follow it, and come upon the colossal object, which they determine is an egg. As they ponder what could have laid such an egg, they hear two voices say the egg belongs to Mothra. Two miniature twin women emerge from behind a flower and introduce themselves as the Cosmos. They explain that 12,000 years ago, Mothra was the guardian of Earth, which was inhabited by an advanced human civilization. When scientists developed a climate-controlling device, this greatly offended the Earth, which created the black Mothra: Battra. Battra not only destroyed the device, but declared war on all of humanity, believing it to be a threat to the Earth. Mothra battled Battra and defeated him, sealing him in the North Sea, then retreated to Infant Island to live with the Cosmos. The Cosmos express their fear that the recent meteor impact may have awakened Battra, who will no doubt resume his campaign against the human race. Ando contacts his employer, Takeshi Tomokane, and tells him about the egg. Currently experiencing difficulties with his company’s developments at Mount Fuji, Tomokane believes the egg will make a fantastic tourist attraction for his company to exploit, so he sends ships to escort the egg back to Japan. The Cosmos allow the egg to be taken to Japan, believing it could be safer in a controlled environment there than exposed on the island.

While the egg is being transported, the larval form of Battra appears off the coast of Japan, rapidly approaching the mainland. The JSDF assaults the beast, but their weapons have no effect, and Battra comes ashore. Battra begins burrowing underground, then surfaces at Nagoya Castle. Battra begins terrorizing the city of Nagoya, blasting apart buildings with beams fired from his eyes and horn. Once Battra reaches Nagoya TV Tower, he is confronted by numerous tanks and MBT-MB92 Maser Cannons. They too fail to wound Battra, who topples the tower and returns to the ocean, heading toward the Philippines. As the Matrutomo convoy passes the coast of the Philippines, the captain detects a large object approaching their ship. The water begins to boil, and a blue beam shoots into the sky. Godzilla surfaces and begins to approach Mothra’s egg. Hoping to save the ship, Takuya attempts to detach the raft carrying the egg from the ship, but Ando attacks him, saying he has to ensure the egg reaches Japan. Takyuya is able to knock Ando down, then pulls the switch to detach the raft. The egg begins to crack, and Mothra hatches from it. Godzilla fires his atomic breath at Mothra, who jumps into the water and hides behind the raft. Mothra swims behind Godzilla and bites down on his tail, but Godzilla flings her away. As Mothra and Godzilla battle, Battra approaches the area. Battra knocks Mothra out of his way, then attacks Godzilla. The two monsters sink to the ocean floor as they fight, while Mothra swims back to Infant Island. As Godzilla and Battra struggle on the ocean floor, the fault between the Philippine and Eurasian plates splits open, expelling magma into the water. Godzilla and Battra are pulled into the fissure, and immediately vanish from all radar. With Godzilla and Battra presumed dead, Masako and Takuya stay at a hotel in Manila, with the Cosmos staying with them. At the hotel bar, Takuya and Masako reminisce about their honeymoon in Cairo, and remember the feelings they once had for each other. The next morning, they find that the Cosmos have disappeared from their room, having been kidnapped by Ando and brought to Tomokane in Tokyo. Tomokane congratulates Ando for his efforts, and declares that the Marutomo Company will use the Cosmos as their next major attraction. The Cosmos sing to Mothra to summon her to their rescue, and she promptly leaves Infant Island and begins swimming to Japan. As Mothra nears Japanese waters, Dobashi and Minamino give the order for the JSDF to try and stop her. The JSDF’s weapons fail to halt Mothra’s advance, and she nears Tokyo Bay. Masako and Miki Saegusa, accompanied by Midori, try to find the Cosmos in order to prevent Mothra from destroying Tokyo. Using her telepathy, Miki traces the Cosmos to a hotel in central Tokyo, where Takuya has brought them after stealing them from the Marutomo Company, intending to sell them. Masako confronts Takuya, saying she is ashamed of him. Midori implores her father to let the Cosmos go, saying she doesn’t want to be a thief’s daughter. Takuya lets the Cosmos go, and they stand in a window and communicate with Mothra, telling her they are safe and that she doesn’t need to keep tearing apart the city. Mothra acknowledges them and begins crawling away, but the JSDF opens fire on her. This time, Mothra is injured, and begins weakly crawling to the National Diet Building. Mothra begins spraying silk around herself, building a huge cocoon on the Diet Building. As a crowd of spectators looks on, Miki remarks that she can sense Godzilla.

At that moment, Mount Fuji begins erupting violently, and Godzilla emerges from its crater, having swum through miles of molten magma. Godzilla walks down the slopes of the mountain, heading directly for Tokyo. The JSDF deploys a squadron of MBT-MB92s and new ASTOL-MB93 Maser attack aircraft to engage Godzilla, but he easily destroys them with his atomic breath. Meanwhile, Battra appears in the ocean, and transforms into his imago stage. With both Godzilla and Battra approaching the Tokyo area, Mothra emerges from her cocoon in her imago stage, then flies off to destroy Battra once and for all. Mothra flies over the Cosmo World theme park in Yokohama, and is attacked by Battra near the Yokohama Bay Bridge. Battra blasts Mothra’s wings with his prism beams, and she crashes to the ground in the Minato Mirai 21 district. Before Battra can finish Mothra, Godzilla enters the area, intent on finishing his battle with Battra. Godzilla clashes with Battra, who topples the Yokohama Landmark Tower onto Godzilla. As Battra flies overhead, Godzilla breaks free and blasts him with his atomic breath, knocking him to the ground. Mothra sees Battra being beaten, then takes flight and lands near him and begins communicating with him. The two monsters put aside their differences, and decide to fight together against Godzilla. Godzilla roars and begins approaching, and Mothra attacks him. Mothra releases scales from her wings that create a 3-D mirror around Godzilla, deflecting his atomic breath. Mothra releases arc lightning from her wings that shocks Godzilla and begins subduing him. Godzilla retaliates with a nuclear pulse, which breaks the 3-D mirror and sends Mothra crashing into the Cosmo Clock 21. Before the huge Ferris wheel can fall and crush Mothra, Battra grabs it and throws it at Godzilla instead. Mothra and Battra then attack Godzilla at the same time, defeating him after Battra fires his prism beams into Mothra’s 3-D mirror, striking Godzilla multiple times. Godzilla falls to the ground, and Mothra and Battra grab him to carry him away from Japan. Godzilla bites into Battra’s neck, causing him to bleed profusely. As Mothra and Battra carry Godzilla over the open ocean, Godzilla fires his atomic breath into the wound on Battra’s neck, killing him. Mothra is forced to release Godzilla, sending him along with Battra’s lifeless body plummeting into the sea below. Mothra then places a seal over the ocean, honoring Battra’s sacrifice.

The next day, Mothra sits at Haneda Airport, where the Cosmos thank the humans who helped them and bid them farewell. They explain that Battra was destined to destroy a meteor set to strike and destroy the Earth in 1999, and Mothra agreed to take his place in the event of his death. Mothra will fly into deep space and try to change the meteor’s course herself. The Cosmos tell humanity to remember the sacrifice Mothra has made for them, then travel with Mothra into outer space.

U.S. release [ edit | edit source ]

Godzilla vs. Mothra was released directly to VHS in the United States by TriStar Pictures in April of 1998, alongside Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah. TriStar released the film under the title Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth in order to avoid confusion with Mothra vs. Godzilla, which was known as Godzilla vs. Mothra in the U.S. at the time. TriStar used Toho’s international English dub of the film, but not the international title card, instead using the Japanese title card with «Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth» in parentheses at the bottom of the screen. TriStar later released the film on DVD in November 1998 on the same disc as Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah. In 2014, Sony released the film on Blu-ray with its original Japanese audio track in a two-disc set with Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah. Despite being given a new title for its North American home video releases, the film typically appeared under its international title in television listings and streaming services, and was even referred to by this title on Sony’s official website. This resulted in some confusion, with cover art created by Peter Bollinger for Simitar Entertainment’s 1998 VHS and DVD releases of Mothra vs. Godzilla being erroneously used to represent Godzilla vs. Mothra on streaming services and websites.

Box office [ edit | edit source ]

Godzilla vs. Mothra sold 4.2 million tickets in Japan, the highest tally of the Heisei Godzilla series and best result for a Godzilla film since Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster in 1964. It was the highest-grossing Japanese film of 1993, earning ¥2.22 billion. [1] It is the second-highest grossing Toho Godzilla film in Japan, surpassed only by Shin Godzilla.

Reception [ edit | edit source ]

Although viewers appreciate some of the features of the film, such as the ethereal cinematography, the unusual final battle scene set in an amusement park, and the typically beautiful score by Akira Ifukube, some critics charge that the film is burdened by a confluence of over-the-top themes and moments. For example, there is a blatant Indiana Jones influence in a beginning scene, when Takuya escapes from a crumbling ancient temple. Another example is the heavy environmentalist message, with a character musing in almost every scene about the destructiveness caused by human misdeeds. Although there has always been some element of this in Godzilla films, since Godzilla was created by nuclear tests and in ways recalls the devastation caused by atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, critics argue that the topic is handled here too heavy-handedly.

Awards [ edit | edit source ]

Keiko Imamura and Sayaka Osawa won Newcomer of the Year awards from the Japan Academy Prize for their portrayal of the Cosmos in the film. Akira Ifukube received a nomination for Best Music, and Takehiro Murata earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his role as Kenji Ando in Godzilla vs. Mothra and two other roles in Okoge and Minbô no onna.

Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack.

A descendant of the original Mothra who attacked Tokyo and New Kirk City in 1961, the imago Mothra traveled to Japan alongside the Shobijin in 2004 to warn Shinichi Chujo that the JSDF’s use of Godzilla’s remains to build Kiryu was immoral and that she would be forced to declare war on humanity if the remains were not returned to the sea. The Shobijin promised that Mothra would defend Japan against the second Godzilla in Kiryu’s place if her demands were met. While Mothra’s pleas were unheeded, she nevertheless appeared in Tokyo to battle Godzilla when he came ashore. Kiryu was launched into battle to aid Mothra, who was seriously wounded in the battle. Mothra’s twin larvae hatched from their egg on a remote island and swam to Tokyo to assist their mother, but she was killed when she deflected a blast of Godzilla’s atomic breath that was aimed at her offspring. Enraged, the larvae collaborated with Kiryu against Godzilla, finally trapping him in a silken cocoon after he was badly wounded by Kiryu. After Kiryu flew into the Japan Trench with the immobilized Godzilla, the twin larvae returned to Infant Island with the Shobijin.

Name [ edit | edit source ]

The name «Mothra» is the suffixation of «-ra» (a common last syllable in kaiju names) to «moth.» Since the Japanese language does not have dental fricatives, it is approximated «Mosura» in Japanese.

Development [ edit | edit source ]

Requests for Mothra to make an appearance in the sequel to Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla came directly from Toho, following the logic that Mothra continued to be one of the company’s most popular kaiju while the previous film had already indicated that the events of her debut film occurred in its continuity. [6] While Mothra and Mechagodzilla were both recurring monsters in the Godzilla series and considered among Toho’s «Big Five» most popular monsters, Godzilla: Tokyo SOS would mark their first onscreen appearance together. Mothra’s role in the story was written as a direct tribute to 1964’s Mothra vs. Godzilla, in which the imago Mothra is killed in battle with Godzilla before her twin larvae ultimately defeat him. [6] However, this film featured the addition of Kiryu into the battle between Mothra and Godzilla.

Shinji Nishikawa designed the imago Mothra as well as her larvae. The imago Mothra’s design was based on the First Generation Mothra with the exception of her legs, which were made longer and more detailed. [3] Model producer Shinichi Wakasa considered using Rainbow Mothra as a design base early on, as he really liked the mix of warm and cool colors of its wings. However, after a talk with director Masaaki Tezuka, Wakasa ended up creating a more traditional Mothra model akin to the 1961 version. [7] The imago prop was 3.7 meters long and covered in fur imported from the United States. While in past films imago Mothra props had only been suspended from above by piano wire, this prop had wires attached to both the top and bottom to compensate for the weak downward flapping motion of Mothra’s wings in prior films. In addition, the staff were able to adjust the weight loaded inside of the prop according to how strong they wanted Mothra’s wings to be flapping in a given scene, making the flapping of Mothra’s wings appear more natural. [6] This prop was reused for Mothra’s appearance in Godzilla Final Wars the following year, with only slight alterations made to its head. A 3D computer-generated model was also created to depict the imago Mothra in flight for some shots. This model was created using detailed photographs of the prop provided by MONSTERS Inc. [3]

Design [ edit | edit source ]

The imago Mothra is made to resemble the original 1961 Mothra, retaining her slimmer build and fluffy hair all over her body. This Mothra’s hair is longer than that of most previous incarnations, and is mostly white and brown. Her wing design is reminiscent of the original Mothra, with a similar pattern and primarily orange, black and yellow coloration. This Mothra possesses long, hair-covered antennae and round, bright blue eyes. Compared to the original Mothra, this Mothra’s legs are much longer and more detailed.

The twin Mothra larvae from Godzilla: Tokyo SOS are actually non-identical, and display some minor sexual dimorphism upon closer examination. The male larva possesses longer tusks and tail spikes, along with more spots on his face compared to the female. The larvae’s eyes are initially blue, but turn red after their mother is killed.

Personality [ edit | edit source ]

Mothra is a benevolent creature concerned with preserving the natural order of Earth. While she prefers to coexist peacefully with humanity, she is offended at mankind’s use of the original Godzilla’s remains to build the anti-Godzilla weapon Kiryu. Through her Shobijin, Mothra communicates that she will be forced to declare war on humanity should they refuse to return Godzilla’s remains to the sea. Despite these threats, Mothra ultimately comes to Japan’s aid and battles Godzilla, even though Kiryu is still in commission. Mothra later gives up her life to defend her newborn larvae from Godzilla. The two Mothra larvae show a great deal of affection for their mother, and are both heartbroken and enraged when she is killed. They ultimately work together with Kiryu to finally defeat Godzilla.

Origins [ edit | edit source ]

The imago Mothra is a descendant of the original Mothra that attacked Tokyo and New Kirk City in 1961. Mothra normally lives on Infant Island peacefully with her Shobijin, but travels to Japan in 2004 after becoming aware that the JSDF has used the remains of the original Godzilla to construct a weapon. The larvae both hatched from a single egg that their mother laid on an island, and immediately traveled to Tokyo to assist her against Godzilla.

History [ edit | edit source ]

Millennium era [ edit | edit source ]

Godzilla: Tokyo SOS [ edit | edit source ]

Mothra was sighted flying over the skies of Japan, prompting two fighter jets to try and shoot her down. Mothra was unaffected by the jets’ missiles and continued flying to Japan. Mothra landed near the home of Shinichi Chujo, a man who had helped reunite the original Mothra with her Shobijin in 1961. Godzilla defeated Kiryu, while the egg Mothra left behind on a remote island hatched into two twin larvae, much to the Shobijin’s surprise. The larvae reached Tokyo and met up with their mother, who had been wounded in the battle and was now unable to fly. While the larvae were conversing with their mother, Godzilla fired his atomic breath at them. Mothra quickly jumped into the air in front of her offspring, absorbing the entirety of the blast and exploding in a burst of flames. The larvae were heartbroken at their mother’s death, and after briefly mourning her they entered battle against Godzilla. The larvae were too small and weak to seriously hurt Godzilla, but Kiryu soon reentered the battle and seriously wounded Godzilla by drilling into his chest. The larvae took the opportunity to spit silk all over Godzilla, trapping him inside a giant cocoon. Godzilla fell to the ground, but rather than kill him, Kiryu simply flew with Godzilla out to sea and sank into the Japan Trench with him. Their mother’s death avenged, the larvae returned to Infant Island with the Shobijin.

Abilities [ edit | edit source ]

Hurricane Winds [ edit | edit source ]

The imago Mothra can flap her wings rapidly to produce powerful hurricane-force winds that are capable of knocking Godzilla off his feet.

Claws [ edit | edit source ]

The imago Mothra uses her claws to grab onto Godzilla’s head and scratch at his face.

Scales [ edit | edit source ]

Mothra’s weapon of last resort is to release a cloud of golden scales from her wings. These scales seem to impede and weaken Godzilla, as well as cause his atomic breath to explode back in his face. Using the scales causes Mothra to lose her ability to fly.

Amphibiousness [ edit | edit source ]

Both Mothra larvae are adept swimmers, and swam all the way to Tokyo under their own power to assist their mother against Godzilla.

Mandibles [ edit | edit source ]

The Mothra larvae can use their mandibles to bite enemies. One larva sneaks up behind Godzilla and bites down on his tail, which enrages him.

A Mothra larva bites Godzilla’s tail

Silk [ edit | edit source ]

The two larvae can spit a stream of silk from their mouths. They ultimately defeat Godzilla by encasing him in a silken cocoon after he is seriously wounded by Kiryu.

Plot [ edit | edit source ]

One night in 1984, a fisherman out on a boat on Lake Ikeda notices the entire lake begin to glow brightly. At Kanoya Air Base, a JSDF Rear Admiral discusses recent rising radiation levels at Rolisican nuclear testing sites with his staff. He moves on to the next order of business, the strange glowing light reported by the fisherman. A Petty Officer jokes that the fisherman must have seen Issie, but the Admiral reminds him that monsters are very real as they learned less than a decade ago. He gives the order to plant depth charges in the lake, to the objections of photojournalist Mima Kinjo. The Admiral reminds her that she is a guest at the briefing and not a soldier, sailor, or scientist, and reiterates his order to destroy whatever is in the lake. Mima drives to Lake Ikeda and dons scuba gear to see what is under the lake. She finds Mothra, bound by chains marked «JSDF.» She tries to cut them with a knife, but it breaks as her oxygen levels run out and she is forced to surface. Mima returns to her car and leaves to confront the Admiral about what she found. When Mima arrives at Kanoya Air Base, she finds the personnel scrambling in response to Godzilla being sighted off the coast of Yakushima. The Admiral briefs his men about Godzilla’s impending attack and orders them to begin evacuations. Mima bursts into the briefing and suggests that Mothra could defeat Godzilla if she was freed. The Petty Officer is incredulous at the suggestion of unleashing another monster when one is already on its way, but the Admiral tells him to be quiet and dismisses him. The Admiral tells Mima she must have seen Mothra, and Mima responds by saying the Admiral knew what she was and decided to kill her the moment he thought he lost control of her. The Admiral responds that he would do it again, asking Mima where she was the last time Godzilla attacked. She replies that she was with her family at Ishigaki, and the Admiral says that she has no idea what these monsters can do and the destruction they can cause. He tells her to get herself as far away from the monsters as she can, but Mima purchases an underwater blowtorch and returns to Lake Ikeda to free Mothra. Once freed, Mothra bursts out of the lake and flies to the mainland to cocoon herself. Mima watches as Mothra flies away, but is caught by the JSDF and arrested.

The Admiral admonishes Mima in a prison cell for freeing Mothra, saying his men won’t be able to stop Mothra if she decides to attack. Mima says she does not regret her actions, and the Admiral asks what she sees in Mothra. He says that monsters do not think like humans and only care about survival, and he chooses humanity’s survival over theirs. He tells Mima her job was to observe, and instead she has meddled in matters of which she knows nothing and disobeyed his orders. Mima replies that she does not answer to him, and he exclaims that everyone here answers to him. He says that she will answer in court, but that is the least of her worries as Godzilla has arrived in Japan. The Admiral leaves as Godzilla approaches Kagoshima, with Mima watching the news report from her cell. Suddenly, the Shobijin appear before Mima in her cell and tell her not to be afraid. They explain that they are the bridge between humanity and Mothra, and speak on her behalf when she cannot. They say that Mothra must regain her strength in order to face Godzilla. Godzilla surfaces from Kinko Bay, with fighter jets firing missiles at him. Godzilla withstands a barrage of missiles and swats nearby battleships with his tail, destroying them. The Admiral waits at Kanoya Air Base, and is informed of the mounting casualties. He frees Mima from her cell, saying he does not condone her actions but does not have any other options. He informs her that Mothra was last sighted at Sengan-en. Mima drives through Kagoshima as Godzilla rampages through the city, and is struck by another vehicle. She leaves her car with her camera and a knife, and borrows a bicycle from the back of the truck that hit her car. The Admiral meanwhile commandeers a fighter jet, despite the protests of the Petty Officer, refusing to stand by on the ground as his men give up their lives. Mima rides to Sengan-en and finds Mothra’s cocoon. The Shobijin inform her that Mothra cannot free herself without aid, so Mima uses the knife to cut into Mothra’s cocoon.

The Admiral’s jet flies over Kagoshima and fires missiles at Godzilla as he charges his atomic breath and aims it at a fleeing crowd. Godzilla turns his head, and the jet flies right past his face, its wing slicing into Godzilla’s eye and drawing blood. Enraged, Godzilla swipes at the jet before hitting it with a blast of atomic breath. The damaged jet then crashes into the bay. Mothra flies overhead and confronts Godzilla, who headbutts her before she retaliates with an antenna beam and pushes Godzilla back by generating a gust of wind with her wings. Godzilla scratches at Mothra’s wing and kicks her, but she spits a stream of silk at his foot which causes him to fall backward. Mima rushes to take photographs of the battle as Godzilla fires his atomic breath at Mothra. Mima sees the Admiral washed up on the beach and rescues him while Godzilla and Mothra duel in the distance. Mothra slams Godzilla with her abdomen, then begins spraying silk into the air. Godzilla tackles Mothra as the silk surrounds them both, but she fires an antenna beam at his face. Godzilla bites down onto Mothra’s wing and draws blood before tearing off a piece of it. Mothra continues spraying silk until both she and Godzilla are encased within a giant cocoon which falls into the water and sinks. Mima and the Admiral watch from the beach, with Mima remarking that Mothra imprisoned herself with Godzilla to save them. Mima says this isn’t the puff piece she was assigned to write, to which the admiral responds by asking if that’s a good thing. She says it is, but that she definitely missed her deadline.

Some time later, at the bottom of the ocean, Godzilla’s hand bursts free of the cocoon.
