This novel, in the first five chapters, basically exemplifies that though process, to the point where I thought it was a parody at first, but when no explanation or backstory was forthcoming, I realized the author was serious. He legitimately considered committing suicide to be a good excuse to go to another world.

The author probably though it was comedy thing, that the MC is so hopeless IRL that just hacking and deleting his character was enough to drive him to suicide, then wink wink nudge nudge, he goes to another world.

National treasure of a character aside. Probably not even much of a treasure if the company isn’t even willing to do a simply roll back.

Third, as stated on my second point, he’s actually a kind guy. albeit having serious screws loose in his head. You can say he’s actually a man of focus only when he enters a certain state of mind. For the rest, he seems like an arrogant boy while actually feeling insecure inside.

This is actually a slice of life novel about MC that’s trying to find a meaning in his existence (and new life). He feels humane in a really weird way, and maybe that’s why I feel he’s quite charming.

As a human being, of course. No homo.

Bland, mediocre wish-fulfillment with OP MC who is an «all-rounder» who is good at everything, therefore bad at nothing with no discernible personality despite supposedly having the drive to become the best at something in his past life. Side characters are harem candidates that fall into his party with essentially no effort. Of course, being Japanese, no matter how beautiful and willing, MC’s sexual desires are never realized or voiced beyond PG-13.

Even though he has transmigrated into the world through unknown means, it is 100% a game world. Things have stats, and hp, and everybody in the world is aware of them. Dungeons magically regenerate as soon as you exit them.

MC is particularly s*upid, in that he never tests anything in advance, just assuming everything will work exactly as it did in the game he played, despite it being obvious that having been upgraded into a living world that he inhabits, he can easily be surprised at the differences between a game and a game world, such as blacking out when hit in the head by a club. Of course, the novel never punishes him for it, and he just merrily keeps on doing it. He never stops to ponder why the very strange world is the way it is, or how he got there, and really, it’s hard to fathom how he could have actually reached #1 in the «real world»

Fortunately for him, he starts with every advantage under the sun; just for starter’s he’s apparently the most beautiful man in the world because he’s a cash shop character. Then he has his encyclopedic knowledge of the world while the game denizens are degraded to lacking basic knowledge or the intelligence to seek it. He has a cheat where he learns things instantly when denizens of the game world do not. And he starts off a billionaire, because he’s an alt.

Let’s be frank, if this was a game, he’d be a cash-shop smurf using cheats who plays straight from walkthroughs. Worse, it becomes quickly apparent that the only reason he has transmigrated is to make it easy for him, because actual other Players would represent competition which would require the MC to display some sort of talent that makes him beyond a self-insert blob.

All of this might be forgiveable if the writing was good, but this is what you’re faced with reading this mess.

I give her some instructions before confronting the Rock Turtle.

Eko nodded with an unusually serious expression and then closed her mouth.

With my voice as the trigger, she rushed in front of the Rock Turtle.

So far, we’ve defeated the Rock Turtle around ten times. Up until now, Silvia and I have been attacking it with 【Archery】 from the back while Eko defends at the front, but this time is different.»

That’s right, there was no description of the fight itself, unless you count «rushed in front» as a battle description.

You might think that skillful character personalization is something that can redeem it, but.

«Eko looked happy, as if she was having fun every day. She often asked «What will we do today?» or «What will we do tomorrow?» and when I answered with something she’d go «Kyaaa!» and cheerfully jump around. She’s supposed to be a cat demihuman, but from the way she acts she seems more like a dog.»

This could easily be a parody where nobody has a name. MC could be called «Generic Harem Protagonist Cheat», first girl could be «Female Knight», second girl could be «Catgirl», and so on and so forth. People’s personalities are defined by NPC tropes.

You’ve read this before, and it’s particularly sparsely written this time around.

But honestly, this was my tipping point where I stopped:

«This is my wrath. A warning not to look down on PvP games. If you don’t wear down your nerves and put your life on the line, there’s no way to be the top in PvP. If you’re not that serious, it just looks like you’re trolling. And even if the surroundings allow it, I will not.»

The author is an idiot. He has his MC, a gamer, telling people in the game world that they’re not taking a fight seriously because they’re not putting their lives on the line in a magic school tourney and that’s the reason they won’t win and all they’re doing is playing «a s*upid game». I don’t think it’s possible to be more hypocritical than this. I get that he *thinks* he was putting his life on the line in his past life, but obviously he wasn’t. That was just self-delusion, and there’s no sign the author gets it.

At it’s very best, it’s passable at what it does. But considering the genre as a whole, it does not do a single thing well enough to be noteworthy, and the only thing that keeps it from being total tr*sh is that it can’t be taken seriously at any point.

Speaking of the MC, he isn’t bad either. He isn’t the sort of Mary Sue self insert character you see in many isekai’s and he isn’t the ruthless merciless emo edgy murderer you see in many Chinese novels either. He’s somewhere in the middle, having an interesting and somewhat charming personality while also not being a completely immoral and ruthless prick. It’s honestly somewhat refreshing, as you get tired of seeing the type of hypocritical characters who claim to be on the side of the innocent while slaughtering whole clans of random baddies indiscriminately. His motivations are clear and easy to understand, and his personality is likeable and somewhat complex.

We haven’t been able to see many side characters so far as there’s only one person following him at the time of writing, but from what I’ve seen she’s also pretty good and scores similar points to the MC in terms of character growth and development.

The writing so far is somewhat generic, but the biggest gripe I have with this novel is the style of writing. I’m not sure if I should blame the translators or the author for this, but the writing style (paragraphs, sentence structure e.t.c.) is sometimes awkward to read and needs some getting used to. Perhaps this won’t be so strange to a native Japanese reader but this style certainly nearly turned me off to reading it.

World building is strong so far. The world is gradually developed as new chapters come out, and the explanation for the world and the skill and magic system is also pretty fun and intriguing to read and wrap your mind around. A small pet peeve of mine is the integration of video game elements into what is supposed to be a real world, where characters would literally refer to video game things like stats, levels, skills and drops as if they’re actual things in the real world. I don’t know, some part of me just doesn’t like that sort of system where things like power levels are integrated into the real world as it makes conflicts and fights a bout of who’s numbers are bigger rather than pure skill, but with skilful weaving this could potentially work out just fine.

Overall this is great. Certainly much better than a lot of the other novels up on this site.

Message for the author

This novel is literally just «I did this, I did that, useless info dump, 2D heroines»

The female leads just happen to have problems which can be solved which concerns leaving their place in the world and joining the MC’s harem. Any little personality they might have had is removed once their problem is solved and reduced to singing the MC’s praises whenever he so much as takes a step. They even have POV chapters where the MC does some mundane thing and they gush on how amazing it is.

Background characters are bland one note, who just so misunderstand the MC enough to give him exactly what he wants, just because of trivial reasons such as «he’s wearing nice clothes today.»

MC is OP. But it’s not like he gets some best equip or skills at the beginning so it’s fine

this is probably one of the most bland, boring, derivative, and unoriginal stories I’ve ever read. This was honestly a waste of time and I don’t know how I managed to get through 3 volumes of this.

i picked this up after reading the manga because I’m a sucker for isekais, and I thought that the power system was interesting. Also the MC using his game knowledge to abuse bugs and a bunch of other features in the game to his advantage was cool, and seeing him rushing through dungeons and bosses with well thought out strategies was nice, and I thought that the novel was actually pretty interesting.
and then I read like 50 more chapters of it and then all of my expectations were thrown out of the window because this just gradually devolved into the typical female harem male power fantasy isekai story.
dont get me wrong, I dont mind predictable or generic stories, but when you bring absolutely nothing new to the table and have every single cliche in the book, thats when a story becomes really unsatisfying and unenjoyable. Oh yeah, and with shallow ass characters and an unlikable protagonist

first of all, lets start with second, the protagonist. He’s one of the most intelligent, perceptive, and charismatic people in the entire novel who’s able to solve everyone’s problems despite being a shut in neet? And most of his thoughts and decisions just made me roll my eyes

he runs through a dungeon and gets 30 billion CL from a bunch of mithril. What does he do with his newly amassed riches? He spends it on a bunch of mansions that he doesnt need, instead of, say, helping other people like eko’s beastman village which is literally stuck in poverty? Or helping out the bunch of homeless people and thieves riddled across the land (which are literally like half of his servants). Or maybe freeing a bunch of s*aves with his money instead of just a hundred? Oh, but of course none of that coincides with his ideals and so he doesnt do any of that. After all, hes only focused on becoming the toP iN tHE wOrlD!1. 11111

speaking of which, he travels to isoreus, a place in another country, and fights a demon wolf girl named anko for four months, essentially leaving everyone he knows behind, just to get her. I didn’t have any issue with that, and honestly leaving his teammates to train their skills by themselves was pretty cool, and so was getting a new powerful ally, but risking his life unnecessarily was honestly not it. He nearly gets killed by anko because «rUnNnINg aWAy iS FoR pUSSiES» (which makes the goblin thing he brought along to be basically useless?), even though him dying would have caused everyone he left behind at the seven mansions he purchased to wonder what the hell happened to him. His death would also make the duchess’s efforts completely futile, and his absence would have also led to the empire taking over the kingdom, which would eventually cause Maine’s death, but of course he doesn’t care about any of that because why should he. And when he finally gets her through pure complete chance and a gamble on his life, he begins commenting on her MASSIVE BOOBS numerous times because hes a straight male harem protagonist

speaking of harems, literally everyone around is either flat out in love with him, or sees him as a god (coughcough the one hundred s*aves yukari indoctrinated coughcough), which honestly gets annoying.

even after all that, I still decided to read it. Why? Maybe because somewhere in my heart there was the small, minuscule hope that the story would become better. Maybe I thought that this typical, generic isekai story would give me something new. Maybe I was thinking that it would somehow subvert and exceed my expectations. Maybe I wanted it so badly to prove to me that I wasn’t underestimating it.
it did none of that, and when he decides to make love to yukari (who he barely talks to after four months and honestly doesnt even have that strong of a relationship with) for an entire night in, you guessed it, chapter 64a, I just couldnt take it anymore

oh, and dont get me started on the gay macho man trope they used as a disgusting, pathetic attempt at humour (it’s not cool)

im mad and disappointed that a story I thought had so much potential at first halfway became such a massive waste of time.

i feel cheated. Give me back my time please

Mahabharat has been an integral part of your life. Tell us more about it.
I have done so many films in various languages with different superstars — I have worked with Rajini sir (Rajinikanth) in Tamil, Vishnuvardhan and V Ravichandran in Kannada, Chiranjeevi in Telugu, Mohanlal in Malayalam and I even got to direct Salman Khan. I won hearts even when I took part in Bigg Boss. God has been very kind to me. However, despite all this, the Duryodhana tag, has never gone away. In fact, in 2015, when I acted as Ravana in a play, people came to me after the performance and asked me to recite Duryodhana’s dialogues. This means it has truly been unforgettable for them. It was the audience that suggested that I do a play from the perspective of Duryodhana. So, I started writing this play in 2017, worked on it through 2018, and now, the play is out in 2019.
Did playing Duryodhana make the process of writing the play from his perspective easier?
Not really. Reading a lot of books and researching on the subject is what helped. I wanted to bring out Duryodhana and Karna’s stories in the Mahabharata, because I believe history is written by victors, but the vanquished also have tales to tell. That said, I have not been partial to the characters or changed the Mahabharata. I have stayed true to the narrative and portrayed the characters as they are.

Do you still get recognised as Duryodhana?
Absolutely! However, this does not mean I have been stuck in that role. There are many great actors who are remembered for iconic roles — Amjad Khan as Gabbar Singh (Sholay), Amrish Puri as Mogambo (Mr. India) and Shah Rukh Khan as Raj from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. This just means the role has left a big an impact on viewers.

How has Duryodhana impacted you personally?
I think I am like a reincarnation of Duryodhana now (laughs). I am like him in many ways — he sees the world in black or white, and to a large extent, I am like that.

Now your son plays the younger Duryodhana. Do you feel he is carrying the legacy forward?
Siddhant is an intelligent kid who has always excelled in whatever he has taken up. He is a brilliant actor and has been training himself well in advance. He worked on the script with me. There is a pivotal scene in the script of Duryodhana in his younger days at the Gurukul — this sequence gives an insight into his psyche. When we were thinking of who to cast as the younger Duryodhana, Siddhant said he will take it up as a challenge and do it. I told him he would be compared to what I had done. Many star kids constantly get compared to their fathers and are unable to match their parent’s mettle. But I am proud to say that my son has taken the legacy forward. As a 24-year-old, to have taken on a role like that and done justice to it, is a great thing.

How does Mahabharata remain relevant?
It was written many centuries ago, but it still is relatable till day, and will do so, even 1,000 years on, because people can identify themselves with these characters. Every house will have an Arjuna, a Gandhari, a Yudhishthira, and so on. The beauty about the Mahabharat is that every character has shades of grey.

What do you want kids to take away from Mahabharat?
The Ramayana shows you what to do, while the Mahabharata shows you what not to do. It tells us how to behave, how to conduct ourselves and helps us understand what needs to be done to avoid another war.

For everyone saying this was “The First Isekai series”. You are wrong. Re:Zero had a webnovel in April 2012. Mushoku Tensei got one November 2012. Hell, Magic Knight Rayearth is from the goddamn 90s. This shit isn’t new and it shows. I will say it probably started the trend of OP MCs even though that itself is probably a stretch.

Is this anime/manga special in anyway? Not really. It really comes off as cookie cutter basic run of the mill isekai. Generic to a T. It just does it alright. It is currently the flavor of the month anime because it won some stupid award which isn’t much of an achievement in the anime community. I’m sure the animation is stunning for about 30 seconds similar to demon slayer everyone propped up the animation but it was so limited it went back to the budget artstyle used in the majority of anime.

If you like a basic run of the mile isekai with the typical pervy MC. Beast peoples are discriminated against and our MC with a heart of gold saves them all and the ones he saves are added to the harem or whatever. It’s basic bitch cookie cutter typical stuff. The accidental pervert gimmick which is overused to death is in full swing here. The main character never really learns anything and will typically stay the same hapless pervert.

I won’t say its the worst, but it certainly set a lot of tropes that every OPMC Isekai follows today. I’m just curious as to why it took so long to get an anime adaption. Well, I’ll tell you.

There were simply better and more interesting things to adapt at the time.

You know the drill. «A love so strong it conquered time!» (and took no prisoners!)

Two people love each other so deeply, and are tied by the Red String of Fate so closely, that they will meet and fall in love every time they reincarnate, lifetime after lifetime.

This is a very old trope. It is common in stories for the Shōjo Demographic and Eastern romance, where belief in reincarnation is more prevalent. This is sometimes used in Western stories to give Star-Crossed Lovers a second, more successful go after things go south in the story, an alternative to Together in Death for making a Downer Ending into the good kind of ambiguous ending.

It can get interesting if the genders reverse, or only one of theirs does. Infidelity is usually a complete non-issue; their love is so strong they may not even date at all until they meet their eternal better half. unless their reincarnating romance also tends to fall into the same bad habits. Things can get wonky if one of them is or becomes immortal: they end up having to wait decades or even centuries for their loved one to return in a strange form of MayflyDecember Romance. Only very rarely will one or the other honestly fall in love with a third person.

Even more complications arise if one of the two has been brought Back from the Dead via a Resurrected Romance, rather than through reincarnation.

Compare Amnesiac Lover, Reincarnation Friendship, and Doppelgänger Gets Same Sentiment. See also Eternal Love, which describes a different kind of very long-term relationship between immortals, and Time-Travel Romance, which uses time travel instead of reincarnation to bridge the temporal gap. When handled badly, this can very easily turn into Strangled by the Red String.

(This story will not be written in a third-person descriptor, it will be written using First Person Pronouns.) Sorry if this is not your cup of tea.

When referring to oneself in ancient China, people avoided first-person pronouns («I», «me», «we», and «us»). Instead, a third-person descriptor was used, which varied according to the situation.

Lu Tian Qu is an extremely fickle person. She is so fickle it took her 11 years to graduate from college because she changed her major four times. (And that doesn’t include the breaks she took in between.)

She went to sleep, the same as any other night. However, when she woke up she was in the body of a 13 years old girl who was also named Lu Tian Qu. The original body owner had reincarnated back to the age of 13 after being exiled in the furthest corner of the Lu compound and forgotten for 29 silent sad years. She died falling to her death trying to escape by climbing over the wall after her reincarnation.

The flow is good, despite the grammar sometimes being bad. Many novels are almost unreadable because not only is the grammar bad, but the idea structure is poorly laid-out as well. Your story is well-constructed, so the grammar issues are small bumps in the road instead of a derailment. Nothing editing couldn’t fix.

There are issues involving the main character. When she uses base knowledge from her previous life, rumors from her body’s previous life, and deductive logic, this story is very strong.

It’s everything else that causes the story to suffer in credibility. She is too accomplished in her previous life. She is extremely intelligent and book smart when she tries. Good at archery, bunch of stuff. Ok, that’s fine.

She knows about wine, vineyards, and gardening? Um, well it’s relaxing and she likes relaxing with dumb hobbies.

She took off school to ruin someone who framed her father, and did it in a few years. Why wasn’t this in Chapter 1?

Qi is real in the previous world and she was decent at it? Why wasn’t this in Chapter 1?

These are possible, but they feel like she is gaining skills in an amorphous background when the plot calls for it. Because these plot justifications are not generally established in the beginning, it feels contrived and after the fact.

It is fine to have an overpowered main character, but these things need to be established up-front or they just feel like weak justifications. I want to see a genius overpowered girl form genius plans using only base knowledge, investigations, and overpowered genius logic. I don’t want to see her form plans because her backstory now says she did this before.

In my opinion, you either mention them up front, find better justifications, or give the ultimate justification (Go full reincarnation and make her have had a reincarnation in the 21st century world as well.)

Personaly a very frustrating read.

First let me say that i give 5 stars only to true masterpices.
Books that are on the level of the worlds best.
On RR only 1 story got that from me.

Now i have to give this 2 stars for a number of reasons.
First the MCs apearently did 4 majors + Master a martial art + travel the world + crush a masive buisness empire and a whole lot of other things in a couple of years.
Without even trying hard.
The MC just drivted through live and appearently that was enough to be so OP.

It pretty mutch screams «MC has power becourse author wants the MC to have power» There is no reason or solid conlcusion for it.

But thats not the worst of it.
I put it in the back of my mind as i forced myself to read this all the way to chapter 167.
I stoped several times and went back. After all there were quit a few good reviews and i wanted to know what all the fuss was about.

In the end i just had to stop.
Reason is the dam way the author descripes serveral people doing the same thing.
Example:
«Max, anja, John and Mark read the book of truth and became enlightend at the end.»
That sounds pretty solid the author however does it like this:
«Max read the book of truth and became enlightend at the end.»
«Anja read the book of truth and became enlightend at the end.»
«John read the book of truth and became enlightend at the end.»
«Mark read the book of truth and became enlightend at the end.»

Its frustrating to read, looks completly out of place and is an extremly cheap way to increase word count.

That combined with point one makes me give this 2 stars.
With half a mind to give 1 star for the sheer audicity of the word count cheat.

Failed right out of the starting gate.

I couldn’t make it past the first twelve chapters. The shallow, author-insert MC who has no meaningful flaws and is good at everything, the frequent asspulls and backstory retcons necessary to enforce that state, and the generally lacking coherence of any kind of plot or hook to draw interest just killed it for me.

Granted, the poor English didn’t help, but that at least got a warning up front.

Frankly, I don’t care about the MC. I don’t know why I’m supposed to care about the MC or what they’re doing. The hook or reason to get invested in the characters and story events just isn’t there. And that’s the real core flaw in this work, because the other issues are ultimately fixable, work-in-progress learning, or amateur mistakes meant to be learned from.

Binge read the entire thing and I don’t regret it

Hoo boy this is a hard novel to review. Let me start off by saying, that some of the issues that user ACERBIC pointed out is genuine concerns. However, the genre is called Fantasy. It’s meant to be unrealistic. So feeling put off by them to the point you wont atleast read 10 chapters feels like slap in the face of the Author’s hardwork.

Firstly the bad things. I would like to echo Acerbic in one issue. The info dump regarding the MC’s family was unneeded at the time. You could have let the readers know through Butler Zhao later on and the information would have flowed smoother.

The grammer while bad gets better as the story goes on. You can see visible improvements if one binge read the chapters like I did. A bigger problem I believe is the repitition of information from chapter to chapter.

3 or 4 chapters during the cleansing of the capital mention bodies being dragged out in wagons multiple times throughout the chapters. Each time referring to the same incident.

As for the good things, I love the cast. Little dumpling is an instant favorite and I really like the rest of the supporting cast. They are fleshed out well and the different POVs work well for this story. A protagonist can carry a medicore story but it’s the supporting characters that will truly help seprate a mediocore one from a good story. I like the direction the story is going in and I hope kingdom building with some wars and fluffy moments are in horizon to come.

In conclusion, yes this story has problems. It’s being written by someone who wholly acknowledges that they are new at this. However the story is fun to read, and at the end of the day a fun story is all that we come to RRL for. I hope the author is not disheartened by any bad reviewers and do their best to make this story and their following stories better.

Yes, English is not the author’s first language, and there are a bunch of problems with wording, language and spelling.

Yes, the author pulls things out of their butt, and contradicts themselves on occasion.

Yes the MC is a complete Mary Sue, and maybe too damn lucky a lot of the time.

However despite these things I found it to be a fun story so far. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, so I can give it leeway on most of the issues. The grammar is easy to follow, and it appears to be slowly improving a bit in later chapters. The characters are diverse so far, and the mc is likeable enough for me to keep reading.

It’s set in ancient China, but thankfully there aren’t any of the xianxia tropes where every second person that we come across must be put in their place, given face, or murdered (by the mc). So far there are no direct antagonists either, it’s mostly just walking the tightrope of getting in with the (rather bloodthirsty) emperor’s family, and trying to avoid courting death. There is a very small amount of magic, and no cultivation up to this point. I doubt there will be any.

This isn’t a revenge story which is so typical of this genre with a female lead. The mc is mostly just a nice, decent person, which is actually a breath of fresh air from most of the things I’ve been reading lately.

Now I’m at 130, it appears to have some romance in it. Doesn’t appear to be soppy. And it’s had a decent amount of time to develop. Although still seems a bit quick since it’s been about a month or two since the start of the story.

This is also shaping up to be an epic, the story is moving along slowly timewise, although there is a heck of a lot happening over this timeframe.

If somebody would set a goal to write a story I would not want to read, I imagine the result is something like this novel. Now, fair warning, I only read the first chapter, so its possible this book is a hidden gem that only gets an awkward start, but I am not going to risk my brain cells on it.

1. It looks like the heroine is Mary Sue. She is (secretly) brilliant, finished Uni with 4 majors, all the meanwhile being also a nerd with passion for light novels, online games and animes. How she combines passion for nerd stuff with getting 4 majors higher education degree on top of being very athletic and participating in Olympic games so successfully she got 3rd place in fencing, is a total mystery.

Does the writer realize how much effort, time and practicing it takes to even take part in Olympics? Its the whole life dedication, with rigorous training, dieting, taking part in local competitions to qualify for bigger events. But nope, the MC is just that good, I guess.

This story has a lot of problems. I mean a lot of problems. So much so that I very nearly dropped it around chapter 29. The biggest one, is that the MC is constantly getting new skills and powers out of nowhere. Its like the author wrote a scene and decided the MC needed to have a skill to deal with things in the scene and so wrote that they previously learned X.

For example, the MC purchased a plot of land with a couple of grape vines, that obviously at one time was a winery. Well, if thats the case, the MC should obviously know about wine, so they decided, that before she reincarnated, she also spent 2 years intering in a winery. Bam, problem solved. Except it happens repeately. By the current chapter, we’ve realized that the MC was always superhuman, and learned more in 15 years then most people learn in a dozen lifetimes.

I do have to credit the author for one thing though. When an obvious plothole is pointed out, the author will decide, oh, its foreshadowing, and write something to fix the plothole. Explaining why characters act the way they do, or how they have this new power etc. While its extremely off putting, at least the author goes out of their way to fix problems caused by their writing.

I don’t really care for this type of writing. If I was giving an advance review, for style I would mark this very low. However despite this, I enjoyed the story. I’ve always been a sucker for the young miss reincarnation type stories. And the paralels between some of them, as well as a story like the Human Emperor are obvious.

Overall, I enjoyed it, and plan to continue reading it. Despite the problems it has.

Somewhat interesting isekai

This isekai is interesting, it has some concepts that are original, some interesting aspects, and a lot of parts that could need some improvement.

The language introduced based on words being made from specific sounds and combinations of sounds that have specific meanings more akin to Chinese writing than western writing is very interesting, and is something I have not seen before.

The species the main character belongs to are your standard animal-people, and there is a system that gives power to people, pretty standard for this genre.

Now that’s not to say that the system is your generic «race level + stats» or «class + stats» or some such, no, they have a race that can be upgraded based on achievements, and starts based on their species’s original individual’s achievements, the level system is based on bonds, class levels and general skills. They have 10 class skill slots they can fill, and some skills are better than others. Each class and their bond is the same. Their bond levels based on achievements, both within the bond and what the bonid is used for, with a max based on the bond’s level. The class levels based on achievements in general, and class skills level based on achievements linked to that skill. Pretty generic right? Not really, you see the max level in each skill is 10, but by expanding and increasing the scope of the skill, or its depths, you gain a breakthrough, and each breakthrough has 10 levels. Some breakthroughs are simple, while others are ludicrously difficult to get, and each breakthrough is divided into 10 levels, 5 for knowledge and 5 for using the skill. this is pretty interesting, as far as systems go.

In this world, hard work is punished by giving you a worse version of what you could have gotten with patience, at the same time as hard work rewards you by allowing you to grow in power. You are born with certain traits that limit and increase your growth. Having a better species will make it easier for you to learn, and being born to a better species is an inherent advantage that is almost unsurmountable. Hard work is rewarded, with it you can upgrade your race, your class, your skills. You can become powerful, if only you work hard enough.

But do not work too hard, work too hard, and you may earn a cursed skill, and potentially forever limit your potential. Work too hard and you may just cripple yourself. It is an unfair world, one where some are simply born better than others, to a much greater extent than in our world, and while it can be equalized, no matter how much you work, some people, some species and some creatures need do so much less, to get so much more. yet still, while this is true, it is also a world that rewards personal growth to a great extent, allowing anyone to rise and become great should they push themselves far enough, even if they will forever be lesser than those who started out great.

Our main character is at first glance one of these lesser beings, but as it progresses it becomes clear that being worn with the intelligence of a fully cognizant entity allowed them to perform feats none else would have been realistically capable of, allowing them to surpass their species’s natural limits, and become one of those with greater potential than others, and that is without speaking of the knowledge they retain from their reincarnation, and the power they were blessed with that one day may allow them to become something more.

The grammar of this story is pretty mediocre, it’s not horrible, but it is not great. This also encapsulates the writing. At times it’s fun, at times it’s very interesting and even pretty well written, and at times, it’s a boring slog with stat update upon stat update upon stat updates. it gets better as the story goes on, but especially in the beginning, the number of stat updates can be simply tedious to the extreme. This is not made better by the fact that the author seems to think their readers are morons unable to comprehend the simplest of statements without having their hand held the entire time.

The pattern of comes up again and again and again and again. The is usually necessary, even if they are often a bit long-winded. The usually describes what was just written, in a manner obvious to anyone that reads it. You need some explanation, sure, but sometimes «she said» is enough. Lastly you have the situations where someone agrees or speaks about what was said, in these cases, usually the last statement was said again in full in a slightly different format, at which point the character will, finally, get to the point. they do not speak as if they expect people to understand and remember what was said ten seconds ago, they speak as if they expect everyone else to be as smart as a brick, and it comes across as if the author things the audience is filled with idiots.

It is tedious, it is annoying, it is boring, and it could have been so easily avoided. Cut down on the repetition, make the characters speak as if the surrounding characters can understand a simple statement on their own, don’t repeat everything thrice, and maybe try to shorten the stat blocks like you did later in the series, that would have made this a far more enjoyable read.

Beyond that though there are a few other things I would like to point to when explaining what I think of this story.

As I said earlier, the language is interesting, but it goes nowhere, beyond being convenient for describing new things, its never used to much effect so far.

The main character is a reincarnated human. This could have been removed and until chapter 40 or so, I doubt it would have had an effect, and even up to now, you could probably get near the same result without it. There are hints that it may be more important later, but it really does seem a bit pointless at this point.

The story is painfully slow, often using so many words to describe simple things, having so many status screens, and having almost everything repeated twice or even thrice. it slows down the pace and makes it a slot to read at some points.

The males of this species are physically just girls with the opposite equipment and a slightly taller build. This is mentioned and pretty much nothing had come of it at all so far. The only consequence seems to be that men and women are equally capable of being warriors, but with a system, especially one with this much power, that was going to be the case anyhow.

There are, in short, a lot of points that seem to go nowhere, the story is long-winded, and often painfully slow. Its an interesting story, with some good ideas, and if the ideas are expanded upon, and if there is less repetition and general bloat, this could become a good story.

UPDATE:
I wrote the above after reading about 60 chapters, and now that I have completed what are there, I have updated my score from 3.5 to 4 stars.
The story is not great in the beginning, after thinking about it, I believe the following to be my opinion on its quality:
For around the first 5 chapters I would give it 3.5 stars, there is a lot of stat blocks, but it felt like that could be a startup thing.
Somewhere between Chapter 5-25 and 5-40 I would give 3 stars, the problems mentioned above were really apparent here.
Chapter 40-60 or so is probably 3.5 stars for me, with it getting better over time, to the point where the quality of the last 20+ chapters that I have read (up to and including chapter 123) I would give 4.5 stars.

So if you can handle 60 or so chapters with something mediocre, it gets pretty good.

Cadence Lee thought she was a normal girl, perhaps a little well to do, but not exceptionally so. She had her college classes, she had her job that her uncle gave her, and she had a nice boyfriend who was sweet if a little awkward.

Except, when a mugger accosts Cadence and her boyfriend attempts to wrestle a gun away from the criminal, Cadence ends up shot. A normal girl, with the kind of wound Cadence had, would die. Cadence managed to do that part. But a normal girl wouldn’t then open her eyes again and learn that death is not as permanant for her as it is for other people. She can be reborn again, and again. Each time stronger and with new abilities.

The catch? Any world she is born into, she can never return to. She has infinite lives, but only one life for each.

So begins The Many Lives of Cadence Lee.

Familiar, but original

I really enjoy the premise of this story. It is a about a girl who incarnates into an original world each time she dies with the implict command to live a glorious life or else cease being incarnated. It reminds me of jumpchain stories, except jumpchains are almost universally bad. This story is not. The main character, Cadence, isn’t given ludicrous powers for no effort. While she can unlock and purchase abilities and stat increases to carry over between lives, it is clear that she is going to have work hard for every single one.

The overall story seems to be heading toward becoming an anthology of short stories with a reoccurring main character. I like seeing the different settlings for each life and how Cadence’s character grows and changes in response. It will be challenging for the author to make each story interesting as well as contributing to the whole narative; though, I have seen a similar story done well, so I have high hopes for this one.

Writing style, grammar and characters are all good. Side characters could be fleshed out a bit more, but I understand it could be difficult. When making an entire life time into a short story, each paragraph needs to contribute and not everything can make it in without affecting the pacing. Simply, as it is, a lack of character interaction and development means a lack of emotional impact.

One last note, I have seen others recomend that the title be changed and I disagree with them. I can think of two published works with similar titles off the top of my head. Regardless, the title fits the essence of the story. I’d keep ot as is.

Don’t let chapter 1&2 turn you away

This story is briliant, 10/10 would want to forget and read again.

Also, the title is fine imo.

The style is great, we don’t go too deep into the successive worlds Cadence live in but it’s perfectly sensible because she herself doesn’t know much of what happens beyond her immediate surroundings.

The pacing is very well done, you’d expect a story that goes various lives would take a while, but the timeskips go over large stretches of time without giving us a feeling that we’re missing on important stuff.

My only complaint here is that while they are cool and a bit fun, the first two chapters are still massive infodumps of a pile of various achievements and skills that aren’t really very relevant.

Character interactions are on point, descriptions are efficient and sometimes fun.

The Story is great. The stories of each life are extremely well crafted, and the Story of someone relatively average who reincarnates in various worlds is also consistently engaging.

The verious system(s) are well presented, and while MC hasnt done much with the reincarnator system yet, her abuse of local systems is on point, while not giving the feeling that the worlds are full of idiots incapable of properly using the gifts of the system.

Grammar and English are both perfect as far as I can tell.

The side characters are all quite believable and really match the worlds they evolve in.

Cadence herself is quite likable, but more than that, she constantly does some really interesting stuff, and keeps us always wanting to see what’s her next move.

Story and mc both improving over time

I started out wanting to write a more negative review after reading the first reincarnation, but the next couple lives have been better.

The author has plotted themselves into a corner somewhat as it’s a story about lives but it’s hard to flesh them out meaningfully without getting extremely long.

The story is at its best when zoomed in on exciting things happening day-to-day. In that mode it can be fun and exciting.

When the author is bored of a character or just wants time to pass it’s not nearly as fun. I’m talking ‘so anyway I stayed at home and didn’t go out until I was 10’ levels of fun.

The lives can feel pretty hollow, like original Candace is just glimpsing a movie from time to time rather than actually living for decades.

Having spent more time reincarnated than in her original life, she still very much seems like the American girl playing a video game or something.

Either the author realized this or is just more interested in subsequent lives, because the story does zoom in more and get more engaging, although not totally alleviating the issue.

Side characters tend to be very flat, usually just a name or a one dimensional personality. We haven’t seen her really make meaningful friends or socialize in decades. I question if this is possible for someone without going crazy.

The reincarnator points and skills system as it is now feels basically meaningless. She has very few points to spend and impactful things have astronomical costs. It hasn’t affected any of lives at all so far but the latest one is looking like it may change that slightly. So basically you will read walls of text about achievements, stats, and skills only for it not to impact the actual plot at all, which is disappointing.

Candace herself is pretty flat, very every-girl who basically tries to be a decent person and stay alive. I would challenge the author to think about 5 things that make her unique and 5 things the would make readers want to root for her over someone else.

I think if the author continues to build on making each life more explored and meaningful, making the reincarnator side actually relevant, and growing Candace as a character we will have a great story on our hands.

This is a jumpchain story in all but name. The author does many things well: the writing is good, the main character is interesting enough (for now) and best of all, it isn’t an insane power trip as so many stories of this genre have proven to be.

Yet it also carries all the downsides of the genre and they are even exacerbated here. That’s not really the author’s fault, but merely the natural conclusion from using original worlds/universes and being more restrictive than most of the jumpchains I’ve read.

When the protagonist jumps from one fictional world to another in a traditional jumpchain, it’s easy as a reader to immerse themselves into these worlds, because they’re familiar and beloved already. Replace them with original settings however and the author has to hit a difficult balance between constantly using (too much) exposition or leaving the world blank and full of holes.

The same applies to characters in all those worlds: how much time should be invested into making them real to the reader? Is that effort even worth it when they’ll be forgotten about five chapters later? I guess I’m having a hard time finding the motivation to care about those characters, when I know that none of them matter in the grand scheme of things.

This looks to become a series of stories centered around a single protagonist and not the coherent whole I had hoped for. There are plenty of book or TV series that deal with the downsides of their episodic nature by keeping to a small but tight main cast amidst the dozens of guest characters, but this sense of familiarity is lacking here.

For these reasons I know that I’ll grow bored of the story some day soon, but until then I’ll take all the enjoyment I can.

Watching someone die has never been more fun.

The premise of the story is fairly basic: the main character dies and wakes up in a fantasy world with RPG mechanics. Stats and Skills dominate life, society is stratified with the rich and powerful living almost like gods compared to the lower classes, and the main character needs to fight their way to the top.

Until they die again, and have to start over.

This is a story that rewards proactive character who try to make a difference in the world, but who can’t wave their hand to get their way. The protagonist needs to think and act rationally across different time periods and worlds. The more they live (and die) the more they grow.

The worlds are interesting and diverse. The author is inspired from real-world history, which leads to settings that feel real.

The characters are interesting, though unfortunately the nature of the story means that we don’t see other characters aside from the main one really grow as people.

The writing is well done. No real issues with spelling/grammar. e: Since I wrote this review, I’ve noticed the writing has some issues. I’m not sure if the author changed their style, or if I just didn’t notice, but it’s going to take some points off.

All said, I give this story a 4/5. It’s a very good read that I think anyone would like, not just those who are fans of litRPGs.

a solid reincarnation story with a fun twist

Well Executed Premise

The Many Lives of Cadence Lee is an interesting story concept executed well so far.

The basic premise of the stories is that a girl dies, and discovers that she is able to reincarnate into a new world for each lifetime, and to gain improvments based on her achievements.

The premise itself is good, but what makes this story so strong is an aspect of its style, that it takes its time in multiple ways. It takes its time with worldbuilding in each of the lives so far, It lets the MC grow up slowly to flesh out her character and path in each life, and it has so far not rushed into giving her powerful improvements. Many stories with the general premise of reincarnations with perks/improvments/bonuses focus on rapid accumulations of perks and power, rushing through lives for an overarching plot. This story has focused on the main character’s journey in each of the very differents worlds she has lived lives in so far. It makes good use of time jumps but also feels like it has hit the important moments for the character.

The story and character have both been well handled so far, but it is slightly early to make any definitive statements on either point. In the characters lives so far, the main story in each life and the characters experiences have done a good job changing her character, but how the story holds up long-term will heavily depend on the plot/challenges in each life and how they impact the MC. This story’s style choice means that if the author has a solid plan for the story and the MCs progression it can be excellent.

The weak points of the story are that the first two chapters function as a large info-dump that could be off-putting, and that the grammar and editing could be slightly better.

Overall, I would strongly recommend this story, since it has done a great job with its premise and has a lot of potential.

Preliminary: First too brief, now too detailed?

This story is, again, too new to fully evaluate, as it is still below even a hundred chapters. But I’m feeling fairly optimistic, and the author himself admits this is more a first draft than the polished story.

Grammar: Decent, but there are many of typos. Just enough to occasionally be annoyed at the spellchecking program that overlooked them. What is most annoying is the occasional tense-flip, where people switch between past and present tense.

Style: Very good narrating. There are lots of fast-forwarding scenes, but that is bare necessity with a story that already covers 50+ years. Most of that time is just narrated, but the focus is on the showing of the more cool scenes.

Which leads to Story: Each reincarnation is its own story. In almost 50 chapters, we are currently in the 3.5-th life of the heroine. The first two lifes are, imo, write-offs. Lots of plotholes and not polished like the two that come after. The third is excellently written, having done fairly lots of historical research for a fantasy world. Kudos. The fourth. I’m currently having a hang-up on it. Truth to be told, I would have expected it to be done already.

I think the third life had the best balance in that regard of story+character balance; but really, each life is actually a wholly different progression-story.

Summing it up, my overall score is higher than the average of the detail scores, because I think the sum is better than the individual elements.

Despite the story having a long hiatus by now, I’m still hping for it to return.

A Vacation Through Realms Done Well

An all-around enjoyable read. While I originally found the idea of rapidly changing settings off-putting, the good main character, well-built worlds, and enthralling story quickly changed my mind.

The main character finds herself shunted into fantasy realms, complete with the generic ‘system’, but that is not the focus of the story. Generally, the story is focused on how the main character interacts with these different realms, and what she accomplishes through her time spent there. Seeing how her actions affected the different worlds far into the future keeps me going chapter to chapter. While the first realm might seem generic, it does a good job setting up the MC’s development, leading into a beautiful second realm where she makes good decisions (though not perfect, thankfully) and confronts the ancient land anew.

Both the style and story are well put together for a serial of this type, and the characters are relatable, and period-accurate. As the story can feel un-planned as the periods change I gave it less than 5 stars, but they are assembled well, and each individual experience feels planned.

The grammar leaves nothing to be desired, so five stars there.

There are issues involving the main character. When she uses base knowledge from her previous life, rumors from her body’s previous life, and deductive logic, this story is very strong.

She knows about wine, vineyards, and gardening? Um, well it’s relaxing and she likes relaxing with dumb hobbies.

She took off school to ruin someone who framed her father, and did it in a few years. Why wasn’t this in Chapter 1?

Qi is real in the previous world and she was decent at it? Why wasn’t this in Chapter 1?

Personaly a very frustrating read.

Is it me or does it feel like a reincarnation of a story character

ALL HAIL QUEEN BAKARINA.

There are regular reaction chapters within the story that retell previous chapters from another POV, which can be slightly repetitive but /very/ worth reading to get a sense of the whole picture. The story is at times touching, comedic, and cute, but never loses its charm or the appeal of its protagonist as we watch her grow up and prosper. Despite some of the darker plots at play, I still feel the whole series feels rather light and innocent, probably because we get to see the world from Katarina’s eyes. If you’re more into manipulative, cunning leads that win through schemes or tricks, then you should try to find the Katarina in the original otome. This one’s been taken over by the MC in a completely delightful subversion. A fun read and easy to digest. I finished it in one sitting! 🙂

And that’s not to mention the romance, which is so shallow. That’s the thing with harems, and especially with a harem this big. When everyone is special, no one is really special. Plus, the characters in the harem all get about the same amount of screen time. You don’t know who to root for.

I remember rooting for Sophia because, well, she’s the MC’s friend from the past. But after mentions of it, it’s like the novel *mostly* forgets about this detail and she starts blending with the other characters.

Then I started rooting for her fiancé because he was her fiancé and he’s the first person she «fixes?» But when I thought back on it, I realized that I had no other reason to ship him with her. Just that he was first. his personality is the same as everyone else’s.

And recently when the «romance» really starts to kick in, it’s like everyone suddenly just matters less all of a sudden and Jared comes barging through. It’s so. forced. Especially with how it was progressing so far, giving everyone the same room to develop. Forced and inconsistent.

Had potential, but increasingly got worse.

In other words, 10/10.

Oh, and MC is incredibly dense as she doesn’t realize she had a harem full of beautiful and talented men and women even tho they announce their love for her every day. The little to no character development also irks me.

What I don’t like in this story is the female MC. At first she is funny but her folly is repeated constantly until 4 volumes and it started to piss me off.

Despite Bakarina’s worries, this a Grade A fluffy shoujo. Although I’m not often interested in stories like this, I wound up liking this alot, probably because Bakarina is fun to watch, the story moves along at a nice pace, and the other characters are done well enough and it’s fun watching them interact with each other.

The heroine also gets dumber and dumber over time even though she’s got an advantage of about 10 years ahead of everyone. It just feels to me that the author is trying a little too hard to make the heroine dense and funny. But it isn’t very entertaining after 11 chapters of can’t be saved level of s*upidity.

Bakarina, the MC, is really lovable in her own way.
1st- is that despite everything has gone favorably for her, she is very oblivious and she acts as if she taking precautions for the bad end yet it really is just childish preparatiobs and that’ s why she is so ADORABLE! 2nd- everybody is friendzoned around this story but don’t get dissapointed that’s what’s funny, yet makes you think who is gonna win! *Wink**wink**nudge**nudge*

My very first novel about ‘recarnation in otome world ‘ and out of all the other novels of same genre that I have read after this one, I seriously can’t compare them with this one ❤️

I love how the MC is just plain dense to the point where you just find her extremely adorable and funny! Her thought process is gold.

Well. I have news for you.

I adore it. The MC is so st*pid it’s funny, not to mention hilariously oblivious. At first, I wanted the MC to end up with the prince that I’m pretty sure was the first ML. but then I realized, why let a whole d*mn harem go to waste? Knock yourself out babe

the reason why I dropped it after the ‘main’ 35 chapters, is simple. There was no point. Plotline? Gone. Characters? Still 2d. MC? still st*pid but who cares at this point. Worldbuilding? never happened. Hotel? Trivago.

*laughs* I need to stop making that joke. Anyway

that’s that aaaaaaannnddd. yeah. CUT!

However, despite its charm, I don’t think the novel should have continued past volume two or three.

Basically, the gimmicks get old after a while, especially the denseness of the MC. For example, the MC is kidnapped and the kidnapper is about to sexually assault her, but she thinks he’s about to cast some sort of magic on her when others ask her about it. The harem gimmick also loses its entertainment value by volume four, when the MC’s step-brother flees because he is (presumably) in love with the MC.

But despite the flaws of volumes three and four, I would still strongly recommend the first two volumes. It’s an funny romp as you read the MC’s shenanigans and how everyone around her grows to care for her. Just don’t expect much after volume two.

Is it me or does it feel like a reincarnation of a story character

Also MC is not the gentle type who only knows how to be a damsel in distress, she’s a fighter (not literally a fighter) that’s full of life and character.

As of chapter 3, this story has shown us a fair amount of fluff with how Abigail is absolutely taken by how cute her step daughter Blanche is and will most probably be doting on her a lot in the future.

As of chapter 3, coupled with the synopsis, we can infer that the direction this story appears to be heading seems to be one where the Abigail dotes on Blanche and (most likely) will gain her affection. The people around her such as the servants will likely follow suit and change their opinion of her. And finally the husband will probably join in on the fluff. But I digress.

Only 3 chapters so far but seems promising. Definitely worth a try.

The book’s female lead does NOT r*pe the male lead, and the ML does NOT r*pe the FL. S*xual assault that happened in the past is discussed in book 1, and it’s disturbing, but it didn’t happen between the FL/ML, and neither of them is the r*pist.

The female lead (FL) : Not desperate for male lead’s love. She’s quite independent, smart, and strong-willed. She won’t allow others step on her, but she’s also not ruthless unless you mess with her step-daughter then you’re dead lol

The male lead (ML) : While cold, he’s still loyal to his wife and would never give other women another glance. A lot of his actions are justified given that the original FL was always scheming and arrogant and the non-loving environment he grew up in.

I absolutely love the new mirror. His interactions with Abigail are hilarious and he is absolutely adorable as well in his own way.

If you enjoy reading daughter of the emperor, you should give this novel a chance!

This story is a twist on the classic Snow White, with the girl ‘Snow White, ‘ a child and the evil stepmother is a reincarnator. Like the typical «I ended up in this situation from the real world, » the FL uses her knowledge (designer) and thankfully has the memories of the previous host, to change her fate and the perception of the previous host.

Is royalty. They didn’t have therapy back then and even the FL says and mentions many times how backwards the time period is. It’s virtually impossible for a man of royalty to confine in anyone about being sexual assault and manipulated by his mother at 13-14. In fact, they would think it’s normal and for him to «suck it up.» Or worse, see it as a weakness and assassinate him or use his brother, Raven instead. The man was assaulted as a child, forced to take care of a child as a result of it, and had to become a ruler all at 15 with no room to breath or act like a teenager. Yes he would be messed up, cold towards his child, and suffering from ptsd and trauma. It takes a lot of guts and courage for a man during that time period to admit to someone, that he had a bad impression towards nonetheless, that he was assaulted.

No seriously the ML not showing worse behaviour is shocking and I’m quite confused on the review victim blaming him on top of that, saying that he was «gaslighting, » everyone (including the FL) by not saying the spoiler. And did we read the same story? ML didn’t blame anything

of a lack of a heir/etc on the previous host. The nobles did. In fact he said he wanted no other wife and refuse to cheat on her when it was implied that it was the FL fault. This is when he was suspicious on top of that. So he had no reason to trust her or not get another wife that he could easy manipulate. He even said himself that if the FL wanted to cheat and get a kid, go ahead. He was tr*shy at first because he ignored the previous host and acted like a cold jerk to everyone but it was explain why.

The previous host wasn’t a good woman. She was obsessed with the ML, abused his daughter, and in general was s*upid. Abusing the maids was the host doing, full stop. It’s obvious the ML has problems but the previous host did not care at all nor see it. The previous host did not see the forest for the trees and was obsessed with this man

to the point that she relived his trauma.

And I don’t see how the FL doting on the daughter is creepy. Like I’m guessing that people (including the reviewer) never had kids or seen doting parents. It can be overbearing depending on the person but the girl has gotten little to no attention from the previous host. No situation did the girl look uncomfortable.

«dressing her up like a doll can’t be healthy for the child and might give her a disorder of some sort.» Again, she likes the attention and the outfits, there is nothing wrong with her mother doting on her and doing girly things. There is no discomfort. You’re reading too hard on this and personalising it.

Even during the drunk on nutmeg part, was the girl scared? No. Was she disgusted? No. She was concerned about the stepmother.

Yes the story isn’t perfect but it’s fun, it’s funny, and refreshing. It had a focus on a FL and a kid trying to fix a relationship. The romance is a back seat compared to exploring characters. Yes the FL is a bit overbearing and weird but she keeps the girl’s interest and her father in mind. It’s not for everyone, no story is, but I can’t stand a review that’s 100% bias and wrong.

This is the Middle Ages, not 2021.

He is seriously afraid of women, and hates them. Both his own mother, and his first queen, Blanche’s mother, were mentally, emotionally, and physically abusive to him, and has left him unable to love, handle physical touch from a grown woman, or trust women. He was forced to marry at 14, and his wife sexually abused and r*ped him frequently in order to become pregnant.

Like, he let everyone believe she was the reason they never consummated the relationship, because she was so horrible, rather than because he has sexual trauma. As such, most everyone treated her terribly and she was in an extremely precarious and pressurized position. She was literally suicidal from his treatment, and had made multiple attempts to kill herself for attention. She eventually went insane trying to get him to love her and succeeded in killing herself, allowing our MC to appear and inhabit her body.

She is also used to being treated like crap and ignored by the beautiful and powerful people, unlike the body’s original owner, a model-gorgeous princess who knew what was her due and expected it, and instead likes to hide behind her stepdaughter, the princess Blanche. She’s like a grown up who sits at the kiddy table on purpose at Thanksgiving dinner, or hangs out with the cat in the corner at a party.

This combination of treating herself as if she were the human and sexual equivalent of beige wallpaper, and putting up with the ML’s dismissive behavior as if it were natural to be treated that way, seems to do the magic trick to get past the ML’s defenses and let the healing begin.

As for the stepdaughter-stepmom relationship, I know it’s supposed to be cute, but I find MC’s obsession creepy, like those 50 year old women consumed by a much too young tween idol. And while MC does several positive things for her stepdaughter, her focus on Blanche’s looks and dressing her up like a doll can’t be healthy for the child and might give her a disorder of some sort.

It was enjoyable until I saw the dysfunction, and now I can’t unsee it.

The set ups and plot devices are, competent, although a bit underwhelming, the «setting» is «Snow White» but with a reincarnator on the step moms body (yes, the witch)

It takes that premise and disregards it completely.

It’s interesting but not that exiting, and even repetitive and at times a bit dull since all the MC does is fawn over «Blanche» (snow white)

In the end, I feel like all this is wasted potential, It feels like the author read the original Snow White as a kid, forgot about most of the important plot points and decided to write her own story, basically a fan fiction that doesn’t remember the original work.

But if you disregard the supposed setting that is done purely for aesthetic purposes, it’s not a bad story, it’s heartwarming although it lacks in characterization, the plot dragging the story forward is just a pretense to make the characters interact which isn’t bad in itself, you can completely disregard all that and keep on reading, the reincarnator doesn’t even use the knowledge of the story because it’s irrelevant to her timeframe, and even if it was relevant the setting is completely not what the original Snow White was.

So, you’re here for one thing and one thing only, the «mother» figure repairing past mistakes and trying to bring a nice life to her daughter.

Which is a nice story in itself, I just feel like it got a bit bogged down by the ORIGINAL story, «Snow White» isn’t by any means a badly written story, so using it as a pretext for this setting feels wrong, because this story can’t compare, at all, to the original Snow White, not in setting or plot points or (in the case of the motion picture) characterizations.

So I would advice to read it with the mindset that this is not «Snow White», think of it as it’s own thing that uses a bit of the aesthetics, and you’ll enjoy it more.

If I remember it correctly, it will fall in summer. That is because the Prince’s birthday is at the end of the summer. In other words, it is almost time for the fireball to fall.

I really get along with Levier-sama and I don’t believe that she will ever direct a fireball towards me. Just in case, maybe I should be on my guard?

It’s fire! Several hundred fireballs were aimed at me!

I instantly set up a barrier with my light magic to quickly stop the magical flames. The fireballs that were repelled by my barrier disappeared.

In the far distance, I can see a silhouette of a fallen person. That silver hair… could it be Levier-sama?

Levier-sama, who had fallen down, was not even twitching. She had completely lost consciousness. From her body, I can see her magical powers overflowing. And from the sky, the fireballs that her magical powers created fell towards her.

Using the magical power of the wind, I tried to blow away the fireballs descending towards the barrier of light and the fireballs aimed towards Levier-sama. I ran over quickly and kneeled beside Levier-sama.

Ah! Damn it, this is really bad.

As Levier-sama loss consciousness, the rampage from the excess of her magical powers won’t cease. I continuously made barriers of light to protect both of us.

My magical power is enormous but it is impossible keep up with the full momentum of Levier-sama’s magical powers without harming my body. If Levier-sama continues to release magical powers at this rate, her life could be in danger. I can suppress her magical powers, but it will take all my strength to do so and it would be impossible to maintain the barrier that protected us from the flames.

My vision gradually blurred. Cold sweat dripped from my temple and fell.

In the corner of my receding consciousness, I noticed a black-haired man confronting the flames.

◇ Epilogue

In the distance, I heard a voice. Are you alive? Are you okay? Such a desperate voice.

I was going to say that I’m fine but I couldn’t open my mouth. Something dropped on my cheeks.

Opening my heavy eyelids, Rufen-sama’s face was close to mine. His obsidian eyes are wet with tears.

Slowly looking around me, the Prince and Levier-sama, as well as the members of the student council surrounded me.

“Levier-sama, are you safe—ugh!”

The moment I sat up, a sharp pain coursed through my whole body.

“Don’t move. It’s a miracle that you were saved!”

With unconcealed irritation, Rufen-sama pushed me back onto the bed.

Fine, I’m not going to get up already, so please stop grasping both of my hands and pinning it on the bed. It is dangerous if your actions were to be mistaken.

“Rufen, I understand that you are worried, but Margarete is troubled.”

Bitterly smiling at Prince Bertrut, Rufen-sama reluctantly let go of me. It seems that he was worried about me.

Tears flowed from Levier-sama’s amethyst eyes which were staring at me. Prince Bertrut was holding her shoulders firmly and supporting her. It’s good that they are in love.

It’s fine, I understand. It’s not something that Levier-sama did deliberately. At that time, Levier-sama had completely lost consciousness.

Levier-sama, who calmed down after the prince rubbed her back, told us the reason why her magical powers went out of control.

“Perhaps I was tired, that’s why it happened.”

Dargrim, who was also listening, nodded with an agonized expression.

At that time, Levier-sama, who saw me in the backyard, wanted to call out to me so that we could go to the student council together.

However, she suddenly lost consciousness and when she recovered, I was lying next to her, and the Prince and Dargrim-sama were looking after her. To suppress the out of control magical powers, it was impossible without the help of the Prince and Dargrim-sama.

“Rufen-sama, isn’t it time for you to let go of my hand?”

He had moved away from my body, but he has been holding onto one of my hands this whole time.

“Uhm, may I ask for the reason?”

“It’s because your magic circuit is broken.”

Oh. What? My magic circuit broke down?

Hurriedly, I tried gathering magical powers in the palm of my hand. But the feeling is different from usual. There is no splashing like forcibly turning a faucet to the maximum. Even if I desperately gather it up, it only flows slightly.

“Margerete, it will be fine. It won’t be for your entire life. Rufen has been constantly healing your magic circuit so it’s not destroyed.”

Now that he mentioned it, I saw something like Rufen-sama’s figure as I was on the verge of losing consciousness……

“You see, Rufen destroyed all the fireballs my rampaging magical powers had made and restored your magic circuit.”

Finally coming to help me, he used recovery magic on me and repaired my magic circuit just before the collapse……

Why did he do something so reckless? Did he want to court death that much? If he had made one wrong move, Rufen-sama would surely never be able to use magic for his entire life.

I concentrated my senses on my left hand that was connected to Rufen-sama. Uh, mm. I felt a different magical power within me. It is warm, gentle and throbbing.

“You will recover in about half a year. That is if you are by my side.”

If that’s the case, I wonder if I can somehow manage to enter into the Royal Sorcery Division. Even if I have good grades in the academy and my magic powers cannot be used temporarily, I will not be immediately dropped out. But……

“Does that mean I won’t be healed if I am not by Rufen-sama’s side?”

Then, is my recovery impossible? There is no way I can keep on accepting things.

“Let’s get engaged, Margarete.”

“Huh? What are you suddenly saying, Rufen-sama?”

“She is a commoner…… Our mothers are different. When she was a child, she lived with my mother’s maid outside the mansion as the daughter of a servant and not of a marquess. Occasionally when we could meet up, I would only hear stories about you. Even though my sister does ask about me, but because she spoke so much about you, somehow I felt like my sister was stolen from me. ”

“And so, it frustrated me. I went to the bakery and the Earl of Fondine’s estate to see you. You were always trying hard and everyone loves you, and when I realized it, I couldn’t take my eyes off you.”

“Then, in front of the student council room the other day……”

“I thought it was my chance. Even in school, our grade levels are different while after school, you would focus all your energy to head to your part-time job. I never had the opportunity to talk to you.”

“If that was the case, you should have talked to me normally.”

“Nonsense. I’m a poor talker.”

I quickly turned my face sideways to avert my eyes. My ears were red.

I wonder how long he looked at me. Somehow, my face became hot. I felt shy that he held my hand.

“I’ve told you everything. Are you willing to accept the engagement?”

Oh, so we’re going back to that topic?

“I don’t have the right to choose…?”

“If I forcibly make you my fiancée, won’t I be hated?”

“Is it alright if I refuse?”

“……Yeah. However in order to restore your magic circuit, I will need to treat you once a day.”

“But I’m a daughter of an impoverished earl.”

“I’m not good at cooking, either.”

“There’s a chef. Don’t worry.”

“I have a lot of siblings.”

“Won’t it be lively and fun?”

“In the future, I want to join the Royal Sorcery Division to support my family.”

“My elder brother will inherit the marquessate. I had planned to accept a viscountcy, but there’s no problem with me receiving the earldom. We could then join the sorcery division together. In that way, the income will be doubled.”

“Am I enough for you?”

Rufen-sama answered me without hesitation. His black eyes pierced straight to me. I grasped his hand in return.

I don’t know about anyone else, but when I died, I arrived at the strangest Heaven of all times. And I got a chance to reincarnate with all of my memories!

If you look away from the fact I had to reincarnate as a damn monster which is the lowest of all the bottom feeders? And I had to represent one of the worst goddesses ever!?

And to make things worse, my «birthplace» was a freaking Dungeon! And not your everyday Dungeon with level 1 slimes and goblins, but a freaking Dungeon-turned-world-destroying-facility!

Still, you gotta work with what you have. So see me how I survive in this crazy new world!!

This is a rewrite of my «A Reincarnated Demon’s Tales of Wonder» series, with a new plot and improved mechanics.

I read and very much enjoyed «A Reincarnated Demon’s Tales of Wonder.» The original version that this one is a re-write of.

I have no idea why the writer felt the need to reboot the series, but I at the time I felt it was their right and hoped for an improvement to the already high quality. I was sorely disappointed. Instead, it’s just a sloppily rushed story full of one info dump after another and it lacks all the mystery and slow discovery that made the original so good.

It was a mistake on the author’s part to think this series needed a re-write. This version has just been a huge drop in terms of the quality of the writing. The writer’s impatience and desire to get past the early parts of the story just drip from every sentence, and it harms the quality of the writing at every step. If the author couldn’t show the restraint to slow down and do it right, they should have never decided to re-write the story.

The story started out cool and I have to admit was unique and quite enjoyable, unlike other reincarnation/isekai type stories where the main character is supposedly accidentally killed by a god, then reincarnated with cheats etc.. It’s too cliché.. It was cool while it lasted, Because then, the story goes bad..

The intelligent adult after reincarnation turns into an evil and unstable 5 year old. The story feels rushed and at the same time everything is literally explained and spoon fed to the reader, like for example, lets say he gets «Poison resistance» the character has an in depth mental conversation with himself, on what it means to actually have poison resistance and after he/she has that internal monologue, he/she has a damned mental breakdown and freaks out about it..

All the while he/she has gone from floor1 of the dungeon to floor 5. The author hasn’t written anything about the interesting part of the story which is the journey to get there or even world building, but rather decided to write about the MC’s thought process on the intricacies of a damned skill.. Oh and all of this, is of course written in an essay/dissertation fashion where it contains roughly, let’s say 2000-3000 words on the principles of the skill known as «Poison resistance».

I’ve literally lost count of how many times I’ve facepalmed.

So.. In short everything is written as an internal monologue and honestly, most of it just feels drawn out and like an info dump, there’s really nothing interesting in the story. I’d say to future readers, if you want to read something akin to wikipedia fastasy-world edition, give this novel a try.

But, if you want to read something interesting, shut this tab immediately by pressing Ctrl + W and don’t waste your time on this novel.

I enjoyed both this and pre-rewrite version. While I agree with some of the complaints waged by the authors of other reviews, that some changes seem to be for the worse (our MC seems less self reliant, and in general we see less from her perspective) there were many writing quality improvements.

All in all it would be nice to see more of our MCs relations, as at this point the romance is not really slow burning, its non-existent. Also, less of black baron please, just kill him off in a ditch somewhere

I wish I could rate this higher. Unfortunately the rewrite feels incredibly rushed AND I don’t like any of the changes. At this point they might as well be entirely different stories as well.

I read both stories and they were both good, this however is the better one in my opinion the first half of arc 1 is a little rushed however the story after that has a consistently good pace whereas in the first the story seemed quite rough around the edges and sometimes pointlessly drawn out. Once it catches up the the original in length I think this story will have well exceeded the others quality I just wish the author decided to rewrite it sooner rather than let us get attached to the first just to rewrite it and change major plot points.

You come here see the tags and you expect that the MC will be somenthing similar to a Demon Lord of Lust, or at least a Demon lord-like character, well, Gerami our MC feels similar to shiraori the MC of Kumo desu ga, the skills are similar, the progress of evolutions too, the change is that instead of arachnid goes for demonic evolutions.

The side-characters (normal habitants of that world) will get as much of protagonism as the MC and grow at the same speed which I find absurd since our MC was born late comparing her to other champions AND to be honest there is a lot of info-dump. If you like watching various characters growing in level the same as the MC and getting your brain stuffed with so much information that you will start skipping the skill tree, you will like this one. It is not my cup of tea.

Forget about the R-18 tag, there isn’t anything at least to the chapters I’m in. Finaly there is no mytery. You know practically everything because you hear the conversations of the gods and you see the POV of practically everyone.

Arc 1 was fine the bad jokes kept was at a minimum since there was no one to play it off on but in Act 2 Mr write seemed to go full ham bad cringe «comedy» for every one and it seem he only know one joke were the MC does something ridiculous and no one laughs not even the reader it brings the whole story down as the story slows to a crawl so he can tell us the cringy long «joke» that seems to only existe to fill the word count

While the writing quality is higher than the original version the story itself feels less interesting atleast in my opinion. Alot of chapters feels like a mix of infodump and filler.

Great reading material really like it..

An exciting story, lots of fun parts and well constructed battles. It’s one of my favorite stories nowadays with a very well built and planned world. Garami is an amazing character but unfortunately her body is incompatible with her personality (I imagine her as a short, mischievous demon rather than its appearance is described)

But there are some things I want to complain about;

Garami doesn’t have a very serious relationship with Mira.

we need more chapters r-18 (with Mira as dominant of course)

Mira has to get higher

Sorry I like the short protagonists (Garami) and their tall lovers (Mira) this is my fetish

This is a personal record to keep track of my thoughts for what I’ve read in Chinese (sans ones I drop within 10 chapters), but also doubles as recs from me (aka novels w/ stars). I might do teasers for ones that haven’t been translated, and as always, if you have any recs for me, please leave a comment on the recs page!

Beware of spoilers, and most (but not everything) is bl. These are my own ramblings and opinions which may get changed/updated, and new novels are added every now and then. Novels in the ‘Dropped’ section aren’t necessarily bad, and I’ve left explanations on why I stopped reading. Who knows, it might be your cup of tea though.

Titles are hard to translate and it’s not something I’m that good at, so if you ever translate any that haven’t been translated yet, feel free to use your own version. You can also leave me better suggestions.

Transmigrating into a Mob Character to Rehabilitate the Villain Plan (穿成炮灰之反派养成计划)

Synopsis: MC is your average guy who gets transmigrated into his favorite web novel as a minor mob that dies in act 1 (pro-tip: don’t flame authors online). Not willing to die early as the script says or wait for death when the villain ultimately destroys the entire world, he decides to grab the opportunity to reeducate the villain while he’s still young so that such a tragedy won’t appear in the future. Or at least, he tries.

Pros: slow romance that makes sense and tugs your heart, super funny and full of fluff, MC’s inner dialogue is very relatable and hilarious, it’s one of those novels that makes you feel really happy after you finish it, the extras are superb (best extras I’ve read so far)

Cons: I wish we got more of side character stories, vol. 4 goes into dub-con territory and possibly non-con depending on how strict your definitions are, some minor points end up being forgotten

The Founder of Diabolism (魔道祖师)

Tags: mystery, bl, action/adventure, xuanhuan, humor, transmigration in the same world, shameless/hilarious/easygoing MC, outwardly cold but inwardly passionate/devoted ML

Synopsis: Ostracized and feared, MC was killed in the name of “justice” and wakes up 13 years later in the body of a gay lunatic. After getting dragged into a mysterious case concerning a ferocious and vengeful left arm, MC teams up with ML as they journey to solve this mystery, and at the same time, unravel the many hidden secrets of the past and the present.

Thoughts: Read this novel and be my friend. I died over this so hard, and I will probably schedule a reread sometime to die over it all over again. Everything is beautiful, and this is my #1 rec. MC is the best kind of shameless MC, in that he’s shameless with his words and actions, but it isn’t out of malice and he also has his own integrity and values. The romance takes a backseat but there are hints all throughout, and it’s a really nice blend of sweet moments amidst all the action/mystery thrills. Even MC himself is a mystery to solve. You’re presented with his terrible reputation in the 1st chapter, but you quickly realize that MC is far from the ruthless, blood-thirsty image you’re led to believe. This was an incredible and beautifully woven story.

Pros: an amazing and intriguing plot, the overlapping mysteries seriously makes this hard to put down, characters that are memorable and real, villains that are really well written, an actual existing fanbase that makes amazing fanworks, both MC and ML can fight with musical instruments, seriously MC and ML are opposites that complement and complete each other and it’s so good

Cons: names can get confusing especially with pinyin (most main characters have 3 ahaha…), it’s set in a fairly standard xuanhuan-esque world so it assumes that the reader is already familiar with certain world-building aspects and knowledge about beliefs about the dead so it doesn’t go into that much detail in those areas

Reborn as My Love Rival’s Wife (重生成为情敌妻)

Tags: m->f genderbend, romcom, modern transmigration, fake marriage, dense/airhead/lively MC, competent/completely smitten ML

Synopsis: MC gets into a car accident and ends up in the body of the girl who was in the other car. They share the same name, and MC finds out that she’s actually his former love rival’s wife, but it’s only an agreement to be fake-married for a year. Counting down until the day of the divorce, MC learns to live as a girl while also living with someone he hates. But the more MC and ML interact, the more their original impressions and feelings for each other start to change.

Thoughts: It’s a fairly enjoyable and light-hearted read. MC is cute and likeable (and absolutely hilarious when drunk). ML is your typical rich, tall, and handsome guy who starts off indifferent but falls in love first and tries hard to win MC over. There’s some drama but not to an unbearable extent, though I wasn’t that big of a fan of the extras.

Pros: many funny situations and convos, the romance was slow and sweet (especially seeing how ML changed), very consensual where ML respects MC’s wishes, drama gets resolved and there aren’t drawn-out misunderstandings

Cons: MC reads as more of a tomboy who’s bi than an actual male stuck in a female body, MC becoming a teacher was essentially ‘let’s just wing it w/o any research or preparation’ (and it works out with zero issues which I side-eyed really hard)

Rebirth of Chen An (重生之陈安)

Synopsis: Betrayed by the second-in-command he personally raised and confined on a deserted island as that man’s bedwarmer, MC commits suicide and wakes up in body of a fat, gay man who also tried committing suicide. He vows to get revenge and reclaim his former status, but the path on said revenge doesn’t quite go the way he initially imagined.

Thoughts: It starts off as a revenge story, but as MC changes and works through his emotional issues, which I thought was a very nice touch, it becomes a love (or rather, harem) story instead. Halfway through, there’s an arc that literally comes out of left field that really threw me b/c it suddenly went fantasy?? I felt it was really jarring, and the tone of the novel also later changes to a frivolous sol that’s borderline silly. Personally, I liked the more semi-serious tone before that out-of-nowhere arc.

Pros: MC is very decisive and knows what he wants, when he realizes his mistakes he changes, the harem aspect is very frank and everyone knows what they’re getting into, plot-wise the first half was very exciting

Cons: genre-shift whiplash, quite a bit of non-con, weapons trafficking kingpins enrolling in college for a single game of basketball (and becoming campus idols) frankly snapped my suspension of disbelief, I also had a lot of issues with the whole farming in Africa arc for a variety of reasons

The Path of the Cannon Fodder’s Counterattack (炮灰逆袭之路)

Tags: revenge, palace/court intrigues, bl, time travel into ancient times, 2nd chance rebirth, knowledgeable/wants to stay alive MC, cold/powerful ML

Synopsis: After ending up in an ancient dynasty with the girl he loved, MC helps her become the Empress, only to be poisoned in return for all his efforts and sacrifices. Waking up in the past to the moment before he becomes an eunuch, MC decides to do things differently this time around and get revenge.

Thoughts: Personally, I liked MC a lot more when he still focused on the revenge aspect. The romance was…not the type that I like. The power balance is entirely skewed towards ML and MC literally has no choice but to obey b/c defying the emperor = death. I kind of wish MC’s original plan of escaping from the palace to live his life leisurely and freely came true. I tend to avoid anything focused on royal family politics/intrigue and the imperial harem, but still finished this b/c this isn’t very politics-heavy and pretty funny a lot of the time.

Pros: MC’s schemes in carrying out his revenge, light-hearted easy read as long as you don’t care much for realistic details

Online Gaming: Love You 59 Seconds (网游之爱你59秒)

Tags: modern day, mmorpg gaming, bl, humor, fluff, sol, obedient/cute MC, handsome/competent ML

Synopsis: MC plays a popular online MMORPG, and somehow ends up tied to and mistaken as a stronger player’s (aka ML) gf. Through his guild, he makes friends and enemies, levels up his character, and eventually falls in love while living a normal college life.

Thoughts: This is a fluffy comedy that’s a very light read as you follow MC and ML from gaming buddies to lovers. Don’t go into it expecting groundbreaking developments or deep characterizations. It’s an easy-going, very idealistic sol love story where a lot of their interaction is through the game.

Pros: light and happy read, quite funny, the game is treated as a game (as it should be), they’re a very cute couple

Cons: a lot of gaming terms/slang, side characters are pretty 2d and only there to cheer on MC and ML, the ending felt a bit abrupt

Picked Up by the Protagonist of a Tormented!MC Novel (被虐主文主角捡回家)

Tags: transmigration into a novel, bl, xianxia, humor, sol, fluff, adventure, crossdressing, fanboy/loyal MC, expressionless/cynical/has a lot of trust issues ML

Synopsis: MC transmigrates into a novel he really likes that ended in tragedy. The protagonist, after constantly suffering and being betrayed, finally staged an assisted suicide, and his death took the whole world down with him. Now that MC is in the body of a baby entrusted in the care of the homeless, 11-year-old orphan protagonist (aka ML), his new life begins. MC vows to protect and change the fate of his favorite protagonist so that he gets the happy ending he deserves.

Thoughts: This is a love story that you don’t realize is a love story until halfway through, as it starts out platonic but gradually changes to romantic. There are a lot of really cute and also really hilarious scenes, but there’s also emotionally serious ones. Their evolving relationship is the focus of the story, and in hindsight, it makes sense that other things like cultivation or combat are mentioned almost in passing. At first, I was in support of MC and ML staying platonic b/c their father-son relationship was super, super cute, but this seriously does a stellar job showing how a relationship can grow, develop, and change in unexpected ways. It’s very natural and convinces you that the two of them are meant to be.

Pros: heartwarming relationship, well paced development, a book-end and very fulfilling ending, MC’s transmigration is explained, ML’s personality is pretty refreshing compared to typical xianxia (aka ‘Qxdian’ lol) protagonists and his emotional shortcomings are actually addressed, he also has no qualms about crossdressing lol

Cons: MC’s age after the mini timeskip really confused me until it got explained later, ML’s actions in last arc goes into abusive territory even if he had his reasons, action scenes and fights are very anticlimactic (pretty much blink and you’ll miss it)

It’s Not Easy Being Your Love Rival’s Big Brother (情敌他哥不好当[重生])

Tags: humor, bl, 2nd chance rebirth, modern day, romcom, enemies to lovers, minor supernatural elements, extremely dumb-cute/kindhearted/stubborn MC, super competent/possessive/also stubborn ML

Thoughts: Laughed my head off in the first chapter, and then kept laughing. The humor tones down a bit later on and it touches on the more serious topic of family acceptance, but if the comedy in the 1st chapter clicks with you, you’ll probably find the rest funny as well. Honestly, MC’s the definition of dumb-cute; he’s not brainless, but rather simple-minded (and pretty dense and ky in certain aspects), and very endearing and hard-working.

Pros: situational humor: the novel, MC’s gradually changing emotions and him acknowledging it like an adult, the way both MC and ML change for each other, very enjoyable sol that doesn’t drag

Cons: time-flow jumps/kind of vague at times, MC’s a bit of a pushover, the subplot with the author/chairman was really random and way too coincidental, lube doesn’t exist

The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage (重生之将门毒后)

Synopsis: MC spent her entire life supporting and helping her beloved husband become the Emperor and stabilize his power, but what she got in return was betrayal, exile into the Cold Palace, and having her entire family killed. She wakes up as her 14-year-old self after her death, and this time, her priority is to protect her family while taking revenge and paying back with interest all those who once made her suffer and harmed her loved ones.

Thoughts: This is pretty much what I want from a 2nd chance rebirth story of revenge. MC is smart and uses her past life’s knowledge to her advantage, but she’s not perfect, has her limits, and learns to adapt as the future changes. The romance is probably the weakest part imo, but it’s not like I read revenge stories for the romance. Even though there’s quite a bit of court politics, it wasn’t too melodramatic or overbearing, and things are settled in a very satisfactory manner.

Pros: well-balanced MC, the reason of her rebirth is explained and fits into the world-building, revenge aspect gives you a lot of satisfaction, the revenge lasts for most of the novel so the suspense doesn’t die down

Cons: the villains are all terrible assholes that don’t deserve an ounce of sympathy (though that’s pretty standard for revenge stories)

The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System (人渣反派自救系统)

Synopsis: MC is brought into the world of the popular and super long harem novel he finished reading (and was extremely unsatisfied about) just before he died. MC becomes the fated-to-die scumbag teacher of the novel’s protagonist (aka ML), and he attempts to change his fate while abiding by the rules and completing missions given by the System that (questionably) aids him.

Thoughts: MC’s inner thoughts and reactions are hilarious, especially the hashtags. There’s a lot of humor in this, but also has it’s fair share of frustration b/c while MC’s very clever and uses his wits and knowledge to solve problems, he’s very blind when it comes to ML. I’m not a fan of prolonged misunderstandings that lead to angst, but it does get resolved and MC actually changes and learns, which was very nice. It’s also pretty hilarious that ML’s the weepy/clingy type, especially given his original setting of a cold/aloof harem master of a thousand beauties, though it was MC’s tsukkomis that made this novel for me.

Pros: MC’s top-notch tsukkomis/humor, the System’s congratulations messages (I seriously died at some of them), a fairly engaging plot, the author’s story was great in wrapping everything up

Cons: misunderstandings got dragged out way longer than I felt necessary, please use words to actually communicate it would have solved 90% of everyone’s problems

Pulling Together a Villain Rectification Strategy (扒一扒反派洗白攻略[重生])

Synopsis: MC, a terminally ill patient, is brought into a novel world by a mysterious System who tells him he can be given a 2nd chance at life on Earth if he completes his role as a villain and gets killed by the protagonist. However, at the moment he gets killed as planned, the System resets and tells him he failed his mission. MC wakes up in another person’s body and must figure out the mystery of why he failed as he navigates the world after his ‘death’.

Thoughts: The first novel I’ve read with a System, though it seems this concept is not something rare, but this takes it in a scientific direction that’s part of the plot. This kind of reads as a mix-and-match of various elements from other novels (eg there’s a lot of The Founder of Diabolism vibes), and while I wouldn’t say it does a stellar job of making everything fit seamlessly at the beginning, the 2nd half is very enjoyable. ML’s devotion and MC’s trust are what I loved about their relationship, and they both have a sharp tongue so their bantering was great. Also, the story about their childhood shenanigans at a brothel was absolutely hilarious.

Pros: fairly engaging plot, the foundation of MC and ML’s relationship, there are some really hilarious scenes, misunderstandings get resolved and don’t get pointlessly drawn out

Cons: the lack of information in the beginning made the first arc really confusing at times, the villains are pretty 2d and made to be hated, side characters aren’t that fleshed out

Who Dares Slander My Senior Brother (谁敢说师兄的坏话[穿书])

Synopsis: As MC is in the middle of reading the grand finale of the only novel he follows, he gets into an accident and ends up as a minor mob character that’s slated to die in that novel. Luckily, he regains his memories before that happens and is saved by the righteous and heroic protagonist (aka ML). Wanting to find out the ending to the novel he loves, MC strives to help the protagonist he admires, though events don’t happen quite as expected and the strange System in his head keeps hinting that the protagonist is evil.

Thoughts: This is really fun b/c from early on, you know that the protagonist of the novel (ML) is definitely not what readers (including MC) are led to believe, and it’s mystery after mystery that keeps you hooked. I really like the System here b/c it’s a tool that gives (mostly useless) info instead of some omnipotent god forcing MC’s actions from above. The plot wraps up really nicely, from MC’s transmigration to the System itself, and I really liked how everything fit together and was explained. It’s a super sweet ending, and not just for MC and ML.

Pros: good balance of revealing/hiding info to keep you interested, has MC and ML pov so you see both sides of the story, mysteries are all explained, unique take on the transmigration into a novel trope

Cons: ML shamelessly making MC fall into deep sleep and then molesting him, slight bestiality, some mysteries get solved via deus ex info dump

Beloved Marriage in High Society (宠婚豪门[重生])

Synopsis: Dying from overwork at the age of 28, MC wakes back up to when he was still in high school. As the illegitimate child of a rich and powerful family, instead of choosing to be ‘useful’, he decides to choose the path of a ‘waste’ and get married off politically. Hoping to escape from the family that used him mercilessly as a tool, this time around, MC’s only wish is to live a life where he can eat and sleep well.

Thoughts: Read this if you want fluff and reaffirmation that true love does exist. This story is what you’d get if you take the character settings/complex family backgrounds from a k-drama, remove the ridiculous misunderstandings/angst where the good suffer but the bad succeed, and then add an epic fuckton of sugary sweetness and ideal communication that’s seriously Relationship Goals. It has all the exciting/addicting parts of a romantic drama minus the frustration of evil characters resurrecting like the plague. This also explores the reality where ‘doing it over’ doesn’t necessarily lead to ‘doing it better’ (MC isn’t the only one to rebirth).

Pros: diabetes inducing fluff, plenty of plot/humor, equal opportunity society, no misunderstandings between MC and ML b/c they actually talk to each other about their feelings/concerns, everything gets wrapped up and it’s a super satisfying ending

Cons: the arranged marriage practice is either non-existent or super strict and old-fashioned, some parts made me go ‘wtf rich ppl’

The Fierce Illegitimate Miss (庶女就要狠)

Synopsis: Betrayed by her lover and finding herself in the body of an illegitimate miss in the past, as a former don of the underworld, MC decides to solve all her problems the simple way, with violence. Bullied? Beat them up. Schemed against? Beat them up. Still not obedient after their first beating? Beat them up again.

Thoughts: This is a really refreshing and fun read for the most part. I’ve never liked the scheming and illogical characters that dominate every transmigration to ancient times story, b/c it’s so frustrating waiting for them to finally getting their just desserts. Here, they get beat up the very next chapter, and it’s great. But after she falls in love, it loses some of its original charm and there are times where MC basically just relies on ML to save her. I guess I was hoping for a story where MC wouldn’t have to rely on ML at all, but given the genre, I was probably hoping for too much. There’s quite a few torture scenes, and some of them went past my comfort zone, just as a warning.

Pros: badass MC that takes no shit from anyone, first half of the plot moves at a brisk and engaging pace, MC doesn’t rely on ML and does her own thing (for the most part), MC solves her problems with her own strength (for the most part)

Cons: you’ll have to be able to suspend your disbelief b/c there’s a lot of unrealistic aspects, the romance is largely founded on MC beating ML up but somehow ML still falls for MC first, MC comes off as overtly heartless at times

Switched Bodies with an Adonis, What Do, Urgently Waiting Online (和男神交换了身体怎么办在线等急)

Synopsis: MC is a bl wuxia webnovelist and an online singer, though he hides that he’s the person is behind both those identities. One day, a popular cosplayer that he follows becomes his new neighbor, and after treating the wounds of a fat cat and half jokingly wishing for a hot boyfriend, he mysteriously starts swapping bodies with his new neighbor.

Thoughts: This is really cute and hits a lot of my personal likes. It’s slow burn romance and full of platonic/suggestive skinship that’s mostly due to ML being, well, ML. As they say, dumber kids are cuter. MC’s personality is also a breath of fresh air, though he gets too tsun towards the end imo. This side steps a lot of overused tropes, and it’s really fun reading about how ML does mental gymnastics to convince himself that he’s “100% straight” while basically pining after and sticking to MC like glue. This novel definitely has some obvious faults, but I enjoyed it a lot nonetheless.

Pros: sweet and cute sol w/ drama/shenanigans that doesn’t go overboard, really funny, the way it incorporated the homophobic aspects of society, characters feel very alive, ML is super likeable even though you wouldn’t think that someone who’s narcissistic/childish/so far in the closet he might as well be a river in Egypt could be so endearing

Cons: some dub-con due to ML being way too horny, passage of time is pretty hand-wavy at times, world building also pretty hand-wavy, not realistic in various aspects, prose is amateur/repetitive and overuses the same vocab

Every Day the Protagonist Wants to Capture Me (主角每天都想攻略我)

Synopsis: After cursing the low IQ of a villain who shares his name, MC is brought into that novel by a System to “do a better job playing that role”. The System tells him that when he reaches 1000 points, he can choose to return to his original world, but if his points drop to 0, he’ll die. Thus begins MC’s plan to change this character from ‘villain’ to ‘one of the protagonist’s lackeys’ and avoid his original outcome of being tragically killed.

Thoughts: Tbh, MC’s IQ isn’t that high either, but it does result in some pretty hilarious misreadings of the situation he’s in and other people’s (mostly ML’s) intentions. This has a similar feel to The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System, but is a milder/more relaxed read w/ less dragged out misunderstandings and almost no action/suspense. The transition of MC going from a dense/self-proclaimed straight male to admitting that he does hold feelings for ML is very smooth, which I liked. I would rec’d this novel if not for the Stockholm Syndrome extra where the author paired MC’s adorable third brother w/ his rapist/abductor who, after rendering him powerless, confined and isolated him in a place where trying to leave = death. Just, no.

Pros: the process of MC going from straight male to accepting ML, sol moments are pretty sweet, MC is dense but once he realizes things he has the self awareness to change/improve

Cons: world-building and certain aspects are hand-wavy, some of the logical progression of the plot/action scenes aren’t that great, the side pairing went the “rape + confinement = true love” route (this entire extra made me so mad), the plot point w/ ML’s parents never gets resolved

Being an Author is a High Risk Occupation (作者属于高危职业)

With a System giving him missions where failure means (sometimes deadly) punishment, MC strives to help his revenge-driven protagonist reach a happy ending so he can return to Earth. Except, he’s a kitten. A newborn kitten that can only meow.

Thoughts: MC is a kitten who would hiss and bare his not even sharp claws while internally praising himself over how “badass” he is, both figuratively and literally. He’s dumb ok (if you evaluate him w/ human standards that is), but not to an annoying/ditzy extent, and he does try hard (w/ his somewhat limited IQ). The humor includes 4th wall breakage, tsukkomis, slang, and emoticons, and it’s written very casually that feels extremely webnovel-esque, for lack of a better term. Also, I like the world-building b/c it feels like a unique world instead of just being a typical xianxia one where descriptions/details/etc get skipped b/c everyone’s already familiar w/ all that. If you don’t take this too seriously, it’s a very enjoyable and light-hearted read.

Pros: it’s very well rounded in that it does a pretty good/decent job in most aspects (world-building, characterization, development, action scenes, etc), MC’s transmigration is explained/relevant to the plot, if the humor clicks w/ you it’s very funny, kittens are cute, kittens are everywhere

Cons: sort of underage (looks aside, MC’s body is technically less than a year old when ML first bangs him and isn’t even fully developed enough to get an erection unless he gets stimulated from behind, look I didn’t come up w/ this setting), minor non-con

There’s Always a Protagonist with Delusions of Starting a Harem (总有主角妄想开后宫[快穿])

Synopsis: It’s the year 3226 and MC gets into a flying car accident, but wakes up in the year 2020 with a System that tells him the only way to heal his body and return home is to completely fill up his ‘Saving the World’ gauge. Turns out, ‘Saving the World’ meant destroying the harem that would cause the world to end, and thus begins MC’s journey of hopping through worlds while thwarting the formation of harems.

Thoughts: Each arc is a different cliche novel setting, and how it gets broken/subverted was the aspect that made this novel stand out from others in the world-hopping genre. Some of the reasons why the world gets destroyed isn’t directly the fault of the harem itself, but rather a string of butterfly effects that (arguably) start b/c the harem existed. You won’t enjoy this if you want a super realistic/logically sound plot about cause and effect, though illogical-seeming aspects do get properly explained later. The romance part mostly takes a backseat to MC completing his mission, but it really tugs on your heartstrings how MC and ML always find and love each other. The overarching plot might seem simple at first, but I think it’s really well done. The ending is sweet and ties things up very nicely.

Pros: great if you hate harems, gives an alternate take on popular/cliche story settings, plenty of humor, plot moves forward w/o lagging and keeps you interested, the mystery solving aspect, actually addresses/fixes ML’s over-possessive faults, the System is the cutest kitten mirror in all the worlds

Cons: MC’s powers/hacking skills aren’t really explained, some arcs fall under the ‘all women in bl are evil’ trope, some of MC’s earlier actions are a bit too extreme imo, the public shaming of fanart in one of the arcs

So What If You’ve Been Reborn (重生算什么)

Synopsis: Destined to have a life of misfortune, MC was pushed into a pond at the age of 3 and became a fool, unable to make new memories. At the age of 6, he was pushed over a cliff, but survived by landing on the barrier of a hidden valley. After reading his fate and seeing how his family neglected him, the man tasked to return him (ML) decides to give MC a chance to change his destiny, so he grows up in that hidden valley of cultivation experts. But unbeknownst to MC, multiple people have been “reborn” as their past selves and are trying to kill him.

Thoughts: This is so good, I love it to pieces. It’s a plot-driven novel that gave me so many feels. I love the humor and side characters, seriously 10/10 side characters, and hands down, the best sect (not MC’s btw). It starts w/ a bunch of people running around w/ their past memories trying to kill a guy who can’t even remember what he ate yesterday, and the irony alone makes this such a fresh read (MC does find a solution to his memory problems though). It does a stellar job of balancing the seriousness of the ever intriguing plot with heartwarming/humorous moments that give this story so much life. You’re never overwhelmed or bored by what’s happening, and w/ long novels (or even shorter ones), that’s so rare. And as much as I enjoy reborn-as-your-past-self-for-revenge stories, this overturns that concept in an amazing way and offers surprisingly deep insight in a lot of other areas as well.

Pros: implements butterfly effects very well, exciting/well-woven plot that keeps you continuously hooked, memorable/well developed characters that feel so alive, comedy isn’t the focus but the humor is great (literally laughed myself to tears), the rebirth aspect is explained/central to the plot, smooth/really nice power curve, this novel is fantastic ok

Cons: you’ll need knowledge on Chinese cultural/folklore beliefs to fully understand certain aspects (they aren’t explained in the novel itself), kind of confusing/awkward pg-13 dual cultivation scenes

When a Manly Guy Transmigrates into a Cicisbeo (当猛男穿越成小白脸)

Synopsis: During the celebration of his company’s new venture, MC is drugged and attacked, and when he wakes up, he’s in the body of a pale, feminine guy. It doesn’t take him long before realizing this is the world of a novel he read long ago, one where the apocalypse was about to happen and the protagonist got a 2nd chance rebirth. And MC’s new identity? The first guy that gets killed in the protagonist’s revenge spree.

Thoughts: This had a fairly interesting start, but that doesn’t last. MC is really inconsistent w/ his character setting as a former soldier, as he keeps making basic mistakes like not being aware of his surroundings, getting kidnapped more easily than a toddler (at least 3 different times /facepalm), among a bunch of other smaller things. I’m not sure if he’s either idiotic except when the plot demands otherwise, or competent but almost always holding an idiot ball. Basically, the further I got, the less likable MC became, and the reason I even finished this was b/c I got too far in to quit. At the end, it felt like the author wanted this thing the end more than I did.

Pros: a plot that keeps moving, 1st half was still fairly interesting and novel

Cons: one of the side pairings is really annoying to me personally, the way dialogue is written is often extremely misleading as to who the speaker is, various inconsistent details pop up here and there, a completely rushed wtf ending

Never Thought You’d Be This Kind of Hero! (没想到你是这样的勇者!)

Synopsis: MC is the 1st person to defeat the Demon King of a popular VR game in hell mode as a Hero, but at the moment of his victory, he ends up transmigrating into a fantasy world almost identical to the game he was playing. Unlike in the game, in this world, the Demon King didn’t die for real and instead, his soul sneaked into MC’s body with the intention of slowly taking it over. But the longer the Demon King spends w/ MC, the more his original desire for MC’s body morphs into a different kind of “desire” for MC’s body.

Thoughts: This is a light-hearted demon king/hero story that I never realized I actually wanted and really wished went on for a lot longer. I’m very fond of MC, who is a hilarious and beautiful balance of money-loving, competent, and down-to-earth. He’s the kind of hero that I really like, upfront and adaptable. He understands how the world works and helps people, but doesn’t blindly preach about saving everyone. There’s a lot of wonderful humor and details that give this story and world so much life. Also, Steamed Bun (MC’s mount) is life, Steamed Bun is love, Steamed Bun is a precious cinnamon roll too pure for this world and must be protected at all costs.

Pros: great humor, good pacing/engaging and easygoing plot, refreshing/memorable side characters that are unique and lovable, hilarious author comments/skits

Cons: sometimes the relationship development feels a bit disjointed, wish there was more world-building/side characters development

The Heavenly Palace Master’s Counterattack (仙宫之主逆袭[重生])

Synopsis: MC spent his life being incredibly filial to his master, handing over 90% of his hard-won treasures, but in the end, he was betrayed by the one he trusted most and killed due to the greed of others. He wakes up in the past, and this time, he’s determined to change his fate. After a coincidental meeting, he decides to take the only person who showed him a sliver of kindness in his darkest hour as his disciple, and thus begins this master and disciple’s rise to the top.

Thoughts: So far, this is probably the master/disciple relationship development that I like the most. ML does scheme and take liberties with MC, but their romance isn’t purely one-sided where ML shamelessly pesters/guilts MC until MC finally gives in out of reluctance/blackmail, unlike a certain other novel that I dropped. Sure, persistence is great, but not to the point you ignore your partner’s feelings, and ML here is all about MC’s feelings. MC’s very stubborn and also physically stronger than ML, so he definitely could have refused ML, but didn’t. Most of MC’s acceptance comes from the fact that ML’s treated MC extremely well for many years + the deep trust they share, and ML also gave MC all the time he needed to think things through. Plus, after MC decides to give ML a chance, MC isn’t passive in their relationship, which is honestly how it should be. Their relationship development and change is definitely the highlight of this novel.

Pros: a nice and believable change from master/disciple to lovers development, engaging and light-hearted plot, quite refreshing twists on the usual xianxia/rebirth tropes, has plenty of both MC and ML’s povs so you know how they both feel

Cons: minor dub-con (stolen kisses/hugs), the revenge aspect was kind of anti-climactic, the fantastical racism and almost genocide in the war arc

As the Minor Gay Rival in Het Novels ([快穿]BG文里的基佬男配)

Synopsis: MC, whose job is to go around worlds ‘filling in’ as various roles to complete the plot, has been promoted from playing mob roles to acting out the gay characters who fall in love w/ the male lead in mary-sue stories. After countless successful missions, for some reason, the male leads started to turn gay for him? That’s not what’s written in the script!

Thoughts: MC is very mob and just trying to do his job as a low-level employee, and ML is kind of a deus ex machina that drops in and makes the original script go completely off-track. MC isn’t OP despite his god-tier acting skills, though halfway through it becomes less MC completing missions and more MC and ML sol love life in various worlds. I like how the romance took multiple worlds to establish, though I lost some interest after MC stopped caring as much about not changing the original plot. The ending didn’t quite live up to my expectations but it’s a fairly enjoyable read overall.

Pros: the concept at the beginning is nicely executed and really captivating, ML is very pushy but doesn’t physically force MC

Cons: world-building’s kind of confusing, the whole mission/reward premise kind of gets hand-waved away later

A Step Behind My Love Rival (情敌先走一步[穿越])

Tags: transported to ancient times, war/politics, gl, crossdressing, normal person/steadfast/persevering MC, strong/formerly frivolous/persistent FL

Synopsis: A week after catching her girlfriend making out on her sofa with another person, MC sees that person flirting w/ a different girl at the mall. Angered, she dumped her milk tea all over that scumbag and after getting angrily chased and involved in a one-sided scuffle, they both fell into a hole that appeared out of nowhere. MC wakes up in a strange place that seems to be in the ancient past, and after being mistaken as an enemy spy, is saved by that scumbag-turned-general. It seems that the other had arrived here 3 years prior, and MC realizes that to live, she can only depend on this former love rival.

Thoughts: This is a story that’s definitely outside of my expectations. Even though politics and war isn’t my thing, this was still quite enjoyable and gave me many surprises. I especially liked how it showed many forms of love, and how MC and FL’s relationship developed. This is not an explosive love story, nor is it an OP transmigrator living the life of a winner in the past. Rather, it is quite a believable (though somewhat idealistic) story of the struggles of an average modern person dropped into a period of turmoil as she fights against her unfavorable circumstances and discovers that there’s more ways to love than what she once knew.

Pros: focus on character rather than on gender, portrayal of multifaceted aspect of love, pretty realistic portrayal of how much influence a modern person could have in ancient times (aka not that much)

Cons: war/politics aspect gets kind of dull/frustrating at times, supernatural elements never explained, needed more fluff ok why wasn’t there an entire extra about MC and FL’s happy life

Heroic Death System (英勇赴死系统)

Synopsis: After getting cursed and pushed into a car accident, MC becomes bound to a System and is told that if he completes enough missions in various worlds, he’ll be given a chance to return to his original world and live again. The catch: he must complete each mission as befitting of a heroic martyr. Also, if he manages to survive 3 such “death missions” in a single world (1 main & 2 sub), then he’ll be allowed to live the rest of his life in that world however he wishes.

Thoughts: First off, please note that this novel’s entire premise is for MC to die heroically, so prepare tissues in advance. You’ll need so many tissues. MC and ML are the literal embodiment of star-crossed lovers and each arc will play your feelings like a fiddle despite you knowing what to expect. Honestly, the emotional factor is done really well, and I’m saying this as someone who usually avoids angst like the plague. This is one of my favorite System set-ups so far, and MC starts off as a normal person w/o any special skills, so seeing his gradual growth was very nice. I’m a bit torn over ML b/c he does descend into scumbag territory, though it’s kind of understandable that his personality would warp due to the built-up pain of losing MC over and over again. It also helps that the novel acknowledges how ML’s pretty scummy instead of playing him off as the ideal bf. MC and ML’s development is actually really nice though, full of both love and emotional heartbreak, and all I want is for them to be happy together. The true face of the System and the real reason why MC’s sent world-hopping is stellar, and honestly, this would be one of my top recs if ML was less rapey. Purely in terms of the plot, this is my fav world-hopping novel so far.

Pros: will take your heart on a roller coaster ride, each world offers a refreshing/new way for MC to complete his mission, the angst offsets the fluff so well & makes it really emotionally rewarding, gradual progression & tone shift b/t arcs, reveal/execution of the overarching plot

The Transmigration Life of Always Being Jumped by the Male Protagonist (总是被男主攻略的穿越日常[快穿])

Synopsis: MC, a fairly popular Qxdian author, is one day suddenly bound to a System that tells him he must complete missions in various worlds. He ends up as the side characters in the novels he once wrote, but for some reason, the protagonist wants to bang him?

Thoughts: So I actually listened to this novel while multi-tasking other things, which is the only reason I finished it instead of dropping. The 2nd arc was the only one I liked b/c ML wasn’t a creepy rapist in that one, and the reason I could sort of ignore the rape aspect is that neither MC nor ML were endearing to me. So yay for apathy? This one’s different from other multiple transmigration stories in that each arc is super long and felt more like a condensed version of a novel than the usual world-hopping arc. It’s not something I’d recommend unless you really like the transmigration into a novel setting, really like a forceful/rapist ML, and are really bored.

Pros: arc background settings are fairly interesting, some changes that differ from other world-hopping novels

I’m Not Shouldering This Blame (这锅我不背)

After almost dying from dehydration/hunger, time starts moving once again and MC finds that he now possesses psychic powers. He only wants to live a normal life, but this bizarre phenomenon keeps happening. Apparently, the world he lives in is a novel, and all the ‘novel transmigrators’ claim that he’s the final boss…

Thoughts: I’m not going to lie, ML/MC here is one of my favorite pairings of all time. They’re so good together, a light/shadow combo that hits so many of my weak points. I love their dynamic, which is something rarely see in bl b/c both MC and ML have high IQ+EQ, and their tacit understanding/trust of each other was everything I wanted. Plus, this has one of my favorite quotes: “Love is respect, not domination,” and it means so much to see this in a bl novel b/c the genre is so overrun w/ yandere/tyrant/abusive relationships. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting to like the relationship development more than the plot, but the plot is also amazing ok. It turns the whole ‘transmigration into a novel’ trope right on its head. Ever wonder how the original characters from a novel would feel in the face of a bunch of transmigrators trying to change the plot? Read this and enjoy the ride

Pros: amazing relationship where they complement/support one another, MC + ML = dream team, really refreshing/captivating plot that offers a completely different perspective than other ‘transmigration into a novel’ stories, the extras are super satisfying as the plot wrap-up & ending

Cons: slightly anticlimactic final battle that made me go ‘wait what do you mean the main story’s over’, wished the transmigration aspect was explained, villains are a bit weak

Rebirth of the Rich Little Wolfish Bottom (重生之纨袴小狼受)

Synopsis: While dying in the hospital after getting caught up in a prison fight, MC realizes that he was mercilessly used and thrown away by his mother/friends/boyfriend, and the older brother whom he’s been brainwashed to hate was actually the only person who cared for his well-being. He wakes up back in his middle school days, and this time around, vows to get revenge on everyone who betrayed him in the past while tightly clinging onto his older brother to ensure a better life.

Thoughts: I can’t quite explain it, but the revenge aspect doesn’t really give you that satisfying feel found in other revenge novels, and sometimes, MC’s actions are kind of…side-eyes. Anyways, the fluff is very nice and sweet, and despite ML already wanting/feeling MC up when MC was still 13, I liked that he had the morals to hold back and wait for MC to turn legal. ML is the good type of overtly possessive b/c he actually has self control and cares a lot about MC’s comfort. There’s also a lot of naked skinship which sometimes got a bit weird for me b/c MC’s very much physically underage and does not come off as a mentally 30+ year old guy.

Pros: ML waiting for MC/caring about MC/holding himself back, fluffy and sweet relationship development, nice time progression that doesn’t feel too rushed/slow

Cons: revenge execution, slightly creepy underage badtouch depending on your tolerance, all women in bl are evil, rape used as revenge, some wtf bl stereotypes

The People Who’re Suppose to Kill Me All Fell for Me Instead (说好要杀我的人都看上我了[快穿] )

Why is this situation so different from all those popular world-hopping novels…

Thoughts: Where do I even begin I love this to pieces it is amazing. The relationship is wonderfully developed and you can feel just how much MC and ML love each other, and that ending, that ending was soooo good and satisfying. ML is the best, best kind of possessive ML who’s all about MC’s feelings and can restrain himself like a boss, 10/10 lover, and also, cute as heck. Kitten!ML is seriously the cutest thing ever and I died of sugar overdose so many times. This is hands down my favorite world-hopping novel so far: no missions, no “you must follow the original plot”, and no arbitrary System rules; just MC’s adventure in alternate worlds as he and ML love each other to pieces. Also, ML’s soul is the same in all worlds despite the somewhat misleading title, and just, gods this was such an enjoyable and super sweet novel.

Pros: diabetes inducing fluff (esp for cat lovers), ML respects & puts MC first, you can really feel the love in their relationship, interesting/refreshing plot, amazing ending that fills your heart with love, kittens are cute kittens are life, 「球球乖」

Cons: overuse of epithets, some descriptions get repetitive, why aren’t there extras ahhhhhhhh

The Legendary Master’s Wife (传说之主的夫人)

With the help of a magical artifact, he successfully cultivates and remains in the sect. As time passes, MC and ML go through adventures, spend time together, and their relationship slowly changes.

Thoughts: It’s a pretty fun and standard cultivation novel, but with bl. MC is cute, funny, and very hardworking so you want him to succeed. ML’s true identity made the romance…kind of awkward if you look at it from a certain perspective, though by the time I finished reading this, I’d already read a bunch of other novels w/ non-humna/human romance so it’s not that weird anymore. Finally getting to the point where I understood the reason behind this novel’s title was quite a refreshing moment, even though you can more or less guess. But it’s rather hilarious nonetheless. This is the first long novel I’ve read in Chinese.

Pros: the adventure and plot, MC’s inner dialogue and complaints, a lot of funny and cute moments, cute fluffy animal companions (that shapeshift), MC and ML’s teasing banter, MC’s amazing naming sense lol

Cons: MC forever being under ML’s thumb, MC also seems to lose 100 IQ points when interacting with ML compared to other people, wish MC was more independent from ML, sometimes drags a bit

Qxdian Males Go Die Go Die (x点男去死去死)

Synopsis: After flaming multiple Qxdian novels and accidentally clicking [Yes] to a strange question, MC and his childhood friend are sucked into his computer and dumped into the world of one of the novels he read. With no guarantee of returning, the two of them must now navigate and survive in this new world.

Thoughts: MC and ML get dragged into a novel together, and it’s w/ their real bodies and not a transmigration, which is new. Tbh, this kind of feels like they’re playing a VR game, and I think it’s meant to be a parody(?) It’s…kind of random at times and the humor’s wavers between funny and meh for me. Halfway through, MC gets transported to a western-ish fantasy world, which is why it’s not in the xianxia/xuanhuan category. The ending is pretty abrupt w/ a fuckton of loose ends, so decide for yourself if you want to read this.

Pros: a different set-up than usual going-into-a-novel stories, some of the humor’s not bad

Cons: not really that engaging, characters feel pretty flat, plot’s really wtf at times

Meowzilla (喵斯拉)

Synopsis: While taking a drive near the beach, a giant cat appeared and kidnapped MC’s car w/ MC inside. MC then finds himself in a completely different world, but luckily he’s not the 1st to have been kidnapped by the giant cat and has help adapting to this new life. However, he soon becomes embroiled in an adventure and battle b/t gods spanning two worlds.

Thoughts: Despite the title, the cat is not the focus; this isn’t a cute animal story, but an adventure interlaced w/ a romance that gradually develops. I love the couple, I love the plot, and it’s a really great read that doesn’t follow convention. The side characters are also really fun, and the antagonists are quite unusual. Like the other stories this author has written, this one subverts the ‘transported to an alternate world’ + ‘mission giving system’ tropes and offers a really unique take that I enjoyed a lot.

Pros: exciting/engaging plot, the relationship is great, world-building and unique take on the true form of the alternate world, the ending was really satisfying esp the killer line that I won’t spoil here, nice humor

Cons: the leveling up aspect and the gods’ powers isn’t quite explained, some matters on the Earth side were a bit unrealistic imo

Pure Yang (纯阳)

Synopsis: MC transmigrates into the world of a female protagonist xianxia novel that he only half skimmed with his body as that of his avatar in the mmorpg game he was playing before he died and equipped with the game’s skills and system. But due to his appearance, the female protagonist and the male lead that she’s suppose to end up with now hate each other’s guts, and the plot starts to deviate.

Thoughts: The is an easy-going and pretty standard novel where MC is very OP b/c he’s armed with cheats and good looks. His body has all the high level skills he had in the game, naturally heals itself, and can cultivate faster than others even when he doesn’t work as hard. It’s fairly enjoyable, refreshing that MC isn’t omniscient on future plot events, and nice that the female protag is quite likeable and isn’t a villain.

Pros: the lampshading humor (also makes it a lot easier to suspend your disbelief), puts its own spin on cliches found in typical cultivation novels, plot moves forward at a nice pace

Cons: MC’s attacks are all from an actual game so if you’ve never played it (like me) the fights are pretty confusing, the world building and romantic development are a bit weak

The Villain Has Something to Say (反派有话说[重生])

Synopsis: After being framed and killed, MC wakes up in the past and the novel that his world is based on drops into his lap. Unwilling to submit to the Will of the Heavens, MC uses the knowledge this book gives him and his past life’s memories to change his own fate. Even if the ‘protagonist’ is unreasonably loved and protected by the very world itself, MC is determined to get his revenge on this man who had stolen everything from him in his last life.

Thoughts: MC’s biggest enemy isn’t the protag, but the protag’s ridiculous plot armor, and it really gives you a new and interesting perspective on ‘plot armor’ itself. The world literally bends itself over backwards to stay “true” to the novel’s events and protect the protag, and sometimes that results in absolutely hilarious situations. The ending was very satisfying and really gives you that feeling of completeness in seeing MC and ML finally together.

Pros: interesting/engaging plot, the concept of fighting against plot armor itself, concepts that are quite thought provoking, the ending was really great

Cons: some way too convenient coincidences for MC, the book aspect isn’t really explained

Transmigration into a Man in a Reluctant Situation (穿越之勉为其男)

Synopsis: MC is pushed down the stairs by his half brother and wakes up in an ancient China-esque world as the male wife of a man in a small village. Luckily, he still has this magical space he acquired back on Earth, so he embarks on his journey of making a fortune through modern food knowledge while going up against various adversaries, improving the village, and developing his own family.

Thoughts: Don’t ask me about the title idk what to translate it to. Also, there’s cultivation, but ML, MC, and their kids are the only cultivators in this world. There’s no mpreg b/c the kids came from flowers that already existed in MC’s space. It’s a cute/fluffy story with kids and pets and not really anyone that can go up against MC + ML, but I still found it quite an interesting and fun read. The focus is MC’s food business, but as someone who doesn’t really like food novels, I liked that it wasn’t overwhelming and didn’t go into every detail about how to make a dish.

Pros: fluffy family full of love, plot that keeps you interested, MC + ML making a good brains/brawn team, wraps up MC’s loose ends w/ his original family

Divine Wood Can’t Be Scratched Through (神木挠不尽)

Synopsis: After being targeted by by both righteous and demonic cultivators b/c he created a divine artifact, MC uses the last of his energy to suicidally kill off everyone chasing him. However, a mysterious power protected his soul and after many years, he managed to steal the body of a divine tree and regained human form. And thus begins his journey to recultivate, and more importantly, find his cat.

Thoughts: This was a fun, light-hearted read where MC’s a (possibly masochistic) top, but only towards ML. While I’m not that fond of tsunderes, ML was still pretty endearing and it’s clear how much he cares about MC. The plot’s pretty fun though I side-eyed some of MC’s actions. The Immortal Realm was a super unexpected but extremely pleasant surprise and I loved its setting to pieces. Honestly, a peaceful immortal realm is the best kind of immortal realm.

Pros: fun/interesting plot, an immortal realm that’s actually like an immortal realm instead of a mortal realm only w/ stronger ppl, humor where you least expect it and it’s great

Cons: sort-of domestic violence depending on your tolerance of violent tsunderes, some dub-con and arguably non-con depending on how strict your definitions are

It’s Actually Not Easy Wanting to Be a Supporting Male Character (想做男配其实也不容易)

However, in his very 1st world, the male protag was also a fill-in actor like him and due to a misunderstanding, started chasing MC across worlds and messing up the plot.

Thoughts: The overall setting is similar to “As the Minor Gay Rival in Het Novels”, but this is way better. The arcs don’t feel repetitive in this one b/c it changes up the original mob character + male protag pair, and this is definitively the best System + filling in roles setting where the truth behind the world hopping is literally just that (and done quite well). Sort of spoiler, but MC isn’t human, and it touches on the darker but quite interesting side of the ramifications behind having humans go to different worlds and filling in as various roles.

Pros: world-building setting of System + world-hopping + filling in as characters, MC’s persistent dedication to his role/job, going into the darker consequences of the world-hopping genre

Cons: points system isn’t really elaborated on/relevant despite its supposed significance, how the 1st Sabotager came to be is kind of a paradox, sometimes feels a bit summary-ish

Guide to Rearing Up a Natural Predator (天敌饲养指南)

Unable to gather spiritual power and stuck in human + animals ears/tail form w/o being able transform back into a hamster, MC begins his life on this strange planet as he struggles to survive, meets a kind snake, and finds love.

Thoughts: I love both the main and side relationships in this, everyone’s wonderful, and I can’t remember the last time a single story had so many stellar pairings. I’m usually hesitant about pairings where there’s a huge power imbalance, but this one is fantastic and their relationship is very mutually sweet. MC isn’t suppressed by ML and I’m not going to lie, the way the physical aspect was handled here ranks at the top for me. In short, this is a wholesome love story that’s super fluffy and interlaced w/ an engaging plot. Idk if it’s strictly mpreg since they lay eggs which then later hatch, but this story didn’t have any aspects of mpreg that I usually dislike. It’s cute and healing af that made my heart melt into a puddle of sugar.

Pros: wonderful + loving + supportive relationships, diabetes inducing fluff, MC + ML’s development, MC + ML mutually wanting each other instead of a reluctant one-way like in most stories, engaging/exciting plot, the cultivation aspect isn’t jarring

Cons: the red marble’s existence wasn’t really explained, some small minor details that don’t 100% make logical sense

I Became a Pretty and Flirtatious Slut Upon Waking Up (一觉醒来我变成了妖艳贱货)

However, he wakes up the next day in the body of a slutty, minor antagonist in that novel with a weird System in his head telling him that to return home, he must complete tasks and save up enough points.

Thoughts: This is quite funny as the plot is very unpredictable and definitely keeps you on your toes. For starters, MC’s niece was suppose to be the one transmigrating, and MC was only grabbed by mistake. Then, a few chapters in, the female protag dies and the plot goes completely off-track. There’s a lot of mysteries and MC’s quite refreshing b/c he’s a teacher who’s 1st reaction is to lecture people in hopes of teaching and leading them onto the proper path in life, so his reactions are very funny at times.

Pros: slow romance that’s quite cute, unexpected humor, unpredictable plot, mysteries that keep you hooked/interested in what’ll happen next, a very satisfying ending

Cons: some of MC’s lectures went over my head, murder/using guns to threaten ppl is apparently the norm if you’re rich

Multi-Transmigrations: Perfect Destiny (快穿之完美命运)

Synopsis: After dying in a car accident, MC’s sent to various worlds to change the destiny of an unfortunate girl into a happy one with the promise of being sent back to 10 minutes before his death should he complete enough missions. He’s very limited in his actions by the System (no OOC allowed), but when a side character unexpectedly house arrests and “rapes” him, he’s inwardly thrilled at the chance to sleep w/ a hot guy.

Thoughts: Before I got to the ending, this novel read as arc after arc of “super unhealthy relationships are a-okay as long as you’re M enough to secretly enjoy the abusive sex”. At the end, you find out that it’s actually consensual and all the arcs were merely MC and ML play-acting out abusive/manipulative relationships full of rape, which I feel conflicted about. I only finished this to find out the ending/MC’s backstory, and I won’t lie, while I really hated all the “rape” in every arc, the ending was good and I liked it a lot. The non-rape parts of the plot are quite interesting and tbh, the only reason I’m not striking out this novel is b/c of the ending (even if it felt like a complete 180 from the rest of the novel).

Pros: interesting plot as long as you ignore the physical relationship parts, MC’s character is pretty unique, the satisfying ending + extras

Cons: has a weird “justifying abusive relationships” vibe, lots of (arguably) dub-con/non-con, the sad emotional appeal attempts honestly become a farce esp after knowing the ending, way too much sex

Everyone Thinks that I Like Him (所有人都以为我喜欢他)

Synopsis: After being asked to take photos of the hottest guy in his class (ML) in exchange for photos of the guy he secretly liked, MC gets caught and the whole class starts to think he likes ML. Despite him trying explain himself, the misunderstanding grows, and thus begins his 2nd year of college w/ the person he previously thought of as his enemy.

Thoughts: MC’s very high IQ low EQ, and while the beginning was a bit meh imo, it grows on you as MC and ML’s relationship changes from enemies, to friends, and then finally to lovers. The misunderstanding aspect is way too exaggerated and kind of stretched my suspension of disbelief, but it’s a fairly short but nice and sweet story about two people ostracized by their family that found a new family in each other. The romance is slow and I quite like the character development. This also shows the ugly and homophobic side of ppl.

Pros: slow romance and how they chance for each other, nice humor if it clicks w/ you, funny side characters that are super endearing

Cons: kind of unrealistic in places, shaky start

The Big Landlord (大地主)

Synopsis: MC transmigrates into a fat young master during an ancient era, and in order to save his family from being destroyed by relatives, goes to the capital in hopes of relying on an old promise of marriage. However, his sister ran away right before the wedding despite having agreed beforehand, and MC was forced to take her place. Thoughts: This was a really fun story that didn’t drag and kept my attention from beginning to end. There were some parts that I didn’t like as much, but for the most part, I enjoyed it quite a lot. A few minor things bothered me, but I liked MC and there’s a sort of justification on why he knows all that he does, as his former occupation isn’t revealed at the start.

Pros: exciting/interesting plot, sweet romance, gradual development of MC’s business empire, MC relying on existing technical experts

Thoughts: This was really good, and if you enjoy mysteries and a super sweet romance that really tugs on your heartstrings, this gets my rec. At the beginning, you might be confused on why MC’s so accepting of everything and the weird setting w/ the pain nerves, but fear not, things get explained and it’s honestly a really great read w/ a satisfying ending reveal. I won’t spoil the fun here, but I loved this novel a lot.

Pros: great arc mysteries and overarching mystery, very interesting/keeps you hooked, MC’s character development, the ending reveal, the romance & ML’s dedication/perseverance

Cons: world-building seems to be built off of another novel so some things aren’t fully expanded on here, minor things that don’t 100% make logical sense

Reborn to a Golden Marriage (重生之金色婚姻)

Synopsis: After being framed for plagiarizing and finding his boyfriend of 8 years discussing marriage w/ his pregnant girlfriend, MC gets into a fight and the 3 of them fall from the balcony. He wakes up in the past and this time, accepts the marriage proposal he once rejected and begins a new life.

Thoughts: This is a pretty short rebirth story with MC and ML’s wedding ceremony as the final act. Tbh, I don’t really remember the events or characters that well at this point of typing this up a week+ after finishing, so… It’s not really a revenge novel imo since MC pays very little attention to his ex iirc, but if you’re looking for a quick read, this isn’t bad.

Pros: short and sweet story where bad guys get their just desserts pretty quickly

Cons: MC’s character’s kind of inconsistent imo, not too memorable

Half of a Sect Master (二分之一教主)

Synopsis: One day, MC mysteriously starts to fall asleep at 8pm sharp, after which he takes over the body of a starving small child in a wuxia-esque world until morning arrives. With one soul taking over during the day and the other only at night, he and the child start to communicate by writing, and thus begins their very peculiar relationship.

Thoughts: The beginning was amazing, but the ending disappointed me. I really liked MC until he got together w/ ML, after which his character kind of collapsed into a “whatever ML says I’ll do” type. While the story kind of touches on the fact that the relationship isn’t healthy, in the end, it’s still justified w/ “MC doesn’t mind so it’s ok”, which I side-eyed really, really hard. Overall, the concept and initial 3/4 were stellar, but then it went bleh. But if you like violent yanderes who micromanage their other half, you might like the ending, who knows.

Pros: really interesting concept/set-up, keeps you hooked for the most part, side characters w/ a lot of potential (that isn’t really used sadly), MC’s pre-relationship character setting

Cons: the relationship change from platonic to lovers, not a healthy relationship imo, ending kind of rushed, some things never explained, a lot of wasted potential

Rebirth of Brotherly Love (重生之兄弟情深)

Synopsis: After dying in a plane crash, MC wakes up 20+ years later in the body of man sharing his name who almost died in a kidnapping incident. As he begins to adapt to this new life w/ a family that seems to hide a secret and 3 new little brothers, he slowly begins to unravel the mystery of his strange kidnapping and things long forgotten.

Thoughts: This was a pretty interesting story w/ a nice twist and a relationship that’s quite sweet. There’s some drama involved but it’s never overwhelming. You find out near the end that it’s not incest, though I honestly thought it was until then. Typing this up quite a while after finishing, so I’m a bit hazy on details, but remember it to be a fairly addicting read.

Pros: ending that wrapped things up, sweet relationship, interesting/suspenseful plot that makes you want to find out the truth

Cons: some minor things that irked me, overuse of a certain trope that I won’t spoil here

The Daily Life of Being the Campus Idol’s Fake Boyfriend (给校草当假男友的日子)

Thus begins MC’s “fake straight guy” life, but then, ML asks him to be his fake boyfriend?!

Thoughts: I love this, it’s so cute

I’m really happy this ended up being my 1st full novel summary, so thank you everyone who voted! Anyways, this is hilarious and an absolute joy to read. The side characters are incredibly lovable, MC and ML are both so adorable like you would not believe, and the slow-burn romance makes you want to force them to kiss, but it’s also so sweet that you want things to last longer. Also, they’re both musicians and I am so weak to pairings that can play duets. Read this, you will not regret.

Pros: fluffy sol that’s super cute and funny, lifelike characters you can really sympathize/relate with, the hilarious skits at the end of every chapter, the way their relationship develops step by step, slow-burn mutual pining is love

Cons: twin brother aspect wasn’t explained in the story early on yet used in the skits so that part would be confusing if you didn’t read the author’s notes, rushed tattoo decision

The Chronicle of When the Sect Master Went Missing (教主走失记)

Thoughts: I loved this novel and tbh, it kind of felt like the final arc of a wuxia epic. It still stands on its own though, and everything important is explained, but I really wanted to know the process of MC’s growth b/c he’s honestly a great character. Seriously, he’s funny, smart, and pretty much makes all his enemies choke from speechlessness, it’s amazing. MC’s identity and memory issue is resolved pretty early on, and the real meat of the tale is the elaborate web of mysteries and incidents that involve the entire martial world. There’s a lot of amazing humor that made me laugh, and it’s a really good balance of serious plot and light-hearted fun.

Pros: really interesting story w/ mysteries that keeps you hooked, hilarious humor, fun characters (both side and main), MC is a treasure (the kind that deals out epic burns left and right)

Cons: wish there were more extras, world-building a bit shaky if unfamiliar w/ wuxia stories, leaves you wanting an entire prequel

Everyone is Secretly in Love with Me (所有人都暗恋我)

Luckily, its powers are still latent, but the seal will soon break. The only way to suppress its effects is with one’s own strength, so MC endeavors to improve his cultivation as fast as he can.

Thoughts: This is a pretty relaxed world that doesn’t take itself or its characters very seriously, which I personally liked a lot. MC isn’t a transmigrator, although he kind of feels like one since the novel is filled with modern slang and references. There’s hashtag jokes, memes, and a lot of comedy. This pretty much reads as a stress-free cultivation novel with an OP!MC collecting harem members (sort of), bl version. The ending felt a bit rushed and random, but it seems like the author decided to rewrite it(?) at some point. Idk if what I’ve read is complete or not, but I’m going to count it as complete.

Pros: very funny, interesting adventures w/ plenty of action, the romance is actually relevant to the plot, it’s pretty refreshing that MC is not dense but simply uninterested in romance

Cons: a lot of dub-con and mentions of non-con, the cut to black scenes are sometimes very abrupt/confusing transitions, MC’s beauty gets praised too much, too many yanderes

Thoughts: This isn’t a traditional world-hopping novel as can be seen by the super short first 2 worlds. The overarching story is really great; there’s no System or missions, and this really embodies what it means to have a love that spans multiple lifetimes. As MC remembers more of his past, he and ML’s relationship in the arcs go from platonic to romantic, and this aspect is done wonderfully. I really like this set-up for world-hopping as there’s a very concrete plot that ties the individual arcs together.

Pros: overarching plot & reason behind world-hopping, interesting arcs, romantic development both past and present, super sweet relationship

Cons: some things aren’t fully explained, xuanhuan concepts may be confusing if you’re not familiar w/ it beforehand

I Need to Skip Out on a Marriage (我得逃个婚)

Thoughts: You know all those stories w/ a mafia boss transmigrating into a trash character and then not acting like a mafia boss? This is the exact opposite of that. MC’s ruthless and clever, and the plans he comes up w/ are great. The supernatural aspect is kind of hand-wavy and I’m not quite sure how I feel about the ending explanation, but this was a really fun read with fights, schemes, and humor.

Pros: exciting/engaging plot, fun/memorable characters, the ways MC solves his problems, unique humor

Cons: last arc depending on your tastes, some loose ends that don’t get tied up

There’s Always a Love Rival Wanting to Ensnare Me (总有情敌想要攻略我 & 总有情敌想要攻略我2)

Thoughts: It’s separated as 2 novels but really reads as one. The title is pretty misleading as ML’s identity as MC’s love rival(?) in the real world is only sort of implied in the last few chapters. Honestly, the arcs are pretty fun but the side characters are kind of meh. Basically, all the original plots have scumbag protags who destroy the lives of the side character MC replaces, and then MC proceeds to destroy that scumbag protag. Kind of makes you wonder why that kind of scumbag is a protag to begin with? Idk, it feels like the set-up is solely to make MC look good at times. It’s a pretty mindless read.

Pros: relaxing read if you’re looking for minor characters overturning original plot and trampling over former main characters

Cons: initial mystery of who killed MC never solved, overarching world-building is pretty weak, dub-con

The King Game (国王游戏[快穿])

Thoughts: The initial set-up and how MC’s always in a super advantageous position w/ loyal followers may seem like it’s an illogical gary-stu story, but there’s a legit reason that explains why things are like that. The story’s not nearly as ominous as the synopsis may make it seem, and it has nothing to do w/ the rl game of a similar name. It’s a fluffy read w/ an ending that’s super satisfying.

Pros: sweet romance, interesting arc plots that aren’t usually seen, ending + explaining the reason behind ML + MC’s loyal followers

Cannon Fodder Counterattack System (炮灰逆袭系统[快穿])

Synopsis: MC’s almost gathered enough points to return home after transmigrating through various worlds, but then something goes wrong w/ his System. He can’t return home, but he’s no longer shackled in his actions. Thus, he continues world-hopping while changing the fates of minor characters and discovers a lover that’s following him.

Thoughts: Similar concept to “There’s Always a Love Rival Wanting to Ensnare Me” w/ a less enjoyable romance but a much more satisfying ending. There were a bunch of minor things I didn’t really like while reading, but the final reveal did redeem some parts in hindsight and gave the whole System set-up a new spin that I rather liked.

Pros: stress-free/enjoyable read if you like the genre, final reveal very touching and satisfying, fujoshi sister in one of the arcs is the best, MC & ML’s happily ever after in the very literal sense

Reborn to Epiphanies (重生之豁然)

Synopsis: After getting drunk in front of his grandpa’s graveyard, MC wakes up back in 1990 during his last year of high school, to before his life became a series of misfortunes, struggles, and loneliness. This time, he’s determined to do all he can to change not only his own future, but also that of his closest friends.

Thoughts: Probably the most grounded and convincing 2nd chance rebirth I’ve read so far, and it’s also really, really good. I adored the platonic relationships and how MC values his friends, making sure they don’t go down the wrong path. Also, the karma that’s dealt is super satisfying/reasonable; the revenge aspect is so good even though this is more a success story than a revenge one. That MC doesn’t go out of his way to make his former enemies miserable before they’ve hurt him in this timeline and focused on improving his own life instead was an absolute joy. Basically, the ppl who got their just desserts really deserved it and it’s not an “everyone bad dies” kind of retribution, which I really liked. Basically, this is wayyy better than the summary may make it seem and a great balance of idealism/realism as per my tastes.

Pros: realistic characters where the villains aren’t over the top and the side characters all have their own lives/goals, reasonably not-OP but successful MC, engaging/interesting plot, really fun humor, unexpectedly developed but super sweet relationship

Cons: some minor things that feel a bit exaggerated, makes you wish the real world was as nice in certain areas, kind of questionable if making money was really so easy back then

I Have Medicine (我有药啊[系统])

Synopsis: After getting hit by truck-kun, MC finds himself in an unfamiliar room w/ a dead body that looks exactly like him and a System asking if he is willing to form a contract. Alone in this unfamiliar world, MC can only agree to complete missions or face death. Luckily, he finds a financial backer (ML) to provide for him in exchange for curing the other’s body, and thus begins their journey to the top.

Thoughts: If you want a novel in the same vein as “The Legendary Master’s Wife” but with a much more mutually supportive/caring relationship, this is what you’re looking for. I liked this a lot more, both plot and romance-wise, b/c ML actually respects/acknowledges MC’s strengths and never looks down on MC for not being as smart as he is (unlike a certain other ML *cough*). MC fully trusts and follows ML while being one of ML’s most important pillars of support (and vice-versa). Seriously, that they complement/make up for what the other lacks is everything I wanted and loved. You get to see them grow strong together side by side, which was super sweet and satisfying. I could hardly put this down.

Pros: trusting/supportive/well-developed relationship, engaging/exciting plot w/ interesting twists, build-up/hints leading up to the final confrontation, unique world-building, really good balance of hiding/showing your strength, actually makes you feel ML’s smart/strong & lives up to his rep

Cons: the world’s setting/common sense is a bit too cruel imo, idk how the population is as high as it is given the death rate, some non-human racism vibes towards the end, minor things here and there

After the Cannon Fodder’s Rebirth (炮灰重生后[快穿])

Thoughts: The good: it’s very different from other “change the original plot” stories in that MC completes missions in a unique way that has a different vibe and sets it apart. The bad: due to the way MC treats and manipulates ppl’s emotions, there’s a strong negative backlash b/c it feels like you’re reading a farce and any emotional attempts seem like a joke. Sometimes, the pov makes it seem like MC is literally the original host instead of a separate entity carrying out a mission, but then it jumps to MC not being the original host and sort-of but not really implies that everything’s only “acting”. In short, it’s really, really jarring. Unlike other world-hopping stories, this gives off a strong vibe that MC’s simply playing w/ ppl and everyone other than MC is an npc whose emotions are inconsequential.

Pros: different types of missions/ways of completing the original host’s requests, interesting take on why ML’s able to follow MC

Cons: jarring issues that breaks the immersion, not really sure if MC even loved ML or was just playing the whole time, emotional appeals that felt like a farce, ending not really satisfying

Transmigrations as Yaojing and Sue-blasting the Whole World (穿成妖精后苏炸全世界[系统])

Tags: multiple transmigrations/lifetimes, bl, mission giving system, arcs [mirror, fox, peach blossom, kitten, koi, virtual pet, quilt, phoenix], childlike/beautiful beyond words MC, over-possessive/cold to everyone that’s not MC/devoted ML

Synopsis: After leaving a flame comment denouncing yaojing (aka animals/objects that gained sapience and can cultivate), MC is cursed by one and forced to transmigrate into various worlds as a yaojing until he finishes cultivating to the highest level. In each world, his missions are to properly cultivate, gain the high favorability of at least 2 humans, and stay true to the type of yaojing he’s become.

Thoughts: As the title implies, MC’s pretty gary-stu, though not the annoying kind (for the most part). This is a light-hearted/enjoyable read as long as you don’t care too much for a deep story or character development (MC gets more and more childish as the arcs go on), though the relationship aspect, while sweet, kind of goes into try-hard territory at times. The individual arcs have pretty interesting plots, though they end on a different vibe than other multiple transmigration stories I’ve read. Hard to explain, but not in a bad way per se.

Pros: interesting/unique arc plots, cute feel-good story, certain scenes are pretty memorable/funny, great if you want to see MC as various adorable animals/objects

Cons: dub-con & non-con, description of MC’s perfect/beautiful body gets a bit too much at times, minor things in arcs that kind of bothered me, character regression imo

Emperor, Don’t Fuss (皇上别闹)

After finding out that it’s been 1000 years since his death and that his story as the only male empress has been passed down in history, his new deskmate, who looks exactly like the emperor, asks to copy his homework?

Thoughts: This is really cute and funny. It’s pretty light-hearted for the most part, and I laughed hard over how ML consults trashy romance novels to chase MC. The sort-of glorification of suicide wasn’t something I liked, but I can’t deny that the romance was quite touching and sweet. This modern world setting is kdrama-esque, for lack of a better term, so depending on your tastes, that could be bad or good. In any case, I enjoyed this quite a bit.

Pros: sweet sugary fluff, ML domineering but doesn’t force MC, really funny at times

Cons: there’s elements here and there that made me slightly side-eye

Do You Like Me or Not (你是不是喜欢我)

Synopsis: After his grandpa’s death, MC (who’s terrified of ghosts) inherits his Yin-Yang Eyes and is now able to see the dead. Luckily, he discovers that by touching his (one-sided) arch-nemesis slash roommate (aka ML), he can temporarily turn off this ability. Thus begins his life of sticking to ML like glue and the start of a beautiful misunderstanding that leads to love.

Thoughts: This is super cute, like, it’s seriously really cute. The ghost aspect is mostly there as the spark that changes MC and ML’s relationship, as well as providing touching stories as MC adjusts to this new life. It’s a short read full of fluff, and MC is the type of tsun that’s really endearing. Read this if you want sugar with a dash of the supernatural.

Pros: super fluffy, really cute relationship, the misunderstanding aspect is funny/adds to the story, emotionally touching side character arcs

Cons: minor things that don’t detract from the story but makes you question the logistics behind the ghost setting

Facing the Apocalypse with Seven Stars on My Palm (末世掌上七星)

Synopsis: After dying, MC is reborn to 10 years in the past to just before the apocalypse happened. He immediately retrieves the contents of an ancient statue that he only found the damaged remains of in his last life, and unexpectedly discovers a cultivation method, an unidentifiable black blob, and the undamaged version of the peach pit that had saved his life many times. Now armed w/ an interspacial storage and a tree that grows magical peaches, he starts preparing for the apocalypse to come.

Thoughts: I really liked the zombie apocalypse arc, and the xianxia arc was an unexpected but very nice surprise (aka thank god for the xianxia arc given how the zombie apocalypse arc ended). The relationship wasn’t quite the type that I enjoy, but given the character setting and circumstances, I have to say that it’s done very well. The thing that disappointed me most was the final ending that left many things unanswered. To me, it felt incomplete. I just wish that the xianxia arc got wrapped up better, or at least mention that MC managed to cultivate to immortality instead of only being at Nascent Soul and then, bam, the end. Still a great read though.

Pros: exciting plot that’s really enjoyable, cautious MC w/ morals despite the cruel setting, slow realistic growth

Cons: slight bestiality, some dub-con/non-con, ending not really satisfying w/ a bunch of loose ends

My Cherries Can Explode in the Apocalypse (末世之我的樱桃会爆炸)

Synopsis: After dying at the hands of cruel human researchers, MC’s reborn to before the apocalypse began and with all his former powers: an interspacial valley that self-grows all sorts of vegetables/fruits/grains plus the ability to turn food into weapons. This time, he’s determined to fix his past mistakes and hold on tight to the lover he once pushed away.

Thoughts: This is a light-hearted (for zombie apocalypse stories) and stress-free read that’s quite fun if you like very OP MCs. The author pretty much took the game ‘Plants vs Zombies’ and used it as MC’s powers, and it’s pretty much a cheat. ML’s acceptance of MC was kind of abrupt imo, but still understandable and doesn’t take away from the story. If you want to read about an elite group kicking ass during the apocalypse, give this a try. It has a slightly different vibe from typical zombie apocalypse stories, and while MC’s power were way too convenient at times, I liked this nonetheless.

Synopsis: MC was framed and had his soul tortured for 3000 years before waking up and finding that he’s returned to his past. This time, he’s as cold-blooded as he once was kind and vows to destroy everyone who caused his death, specifically the sect that framed, abandoned, and caused him to be hunted by the world.

Thoughts: Tbh, I don’t really like MC’s personality, and for most of the novel, he treats ppl terribly, ML included. It’s understandable to an extent, but I’m super glad he changed in the end. Most of MC’s plans are Batman Gambits, so depending on your tastes, this could be good or bad. This is one of those novels where the plot’s good, but the characters are…eh. To me, ML’s brother was the most well-rounded/likable character and the only one that truly made me wish for his success. He deserved better treatment and definitely a better ending (at least mention what happened after he left for Earth). Tbh, he felt like the traditional protag in a story told from the antihero/villain’s pov (aka MC).

Pros: plot w/ overarching mystery that’s fairly engaging (though somewhat stressful), interesting way of explaining MC’s rebirth that’s very essential to the plot, time skips/progression that blend in well

Cons: some detail/logic inconsistencies here and there, narrative feels like it skips at times, non-con, too extreme in many ways, has a bunch of sort-of loose ends that leaves you hanging, the relationship development, weak world-building

Dumbest Disciple Under the Heavens (天下第一蠢徒)

Synopsis: MC volunteered to enter a wormhole to find a way to save Earth and ends up reborn in a cultivation world w/ his past memories, but his body and soul aren’t fully in sync, so he grows up as a “retarded” child. However, things begin to change after he’s struck on the head by his father, falls into a strange coma, and his grandpa asks a mysterious man to become his bodyguard.

Thoughts: Tbh, I was really hesitant about starting this due to the title, but MC’s not dumb in the IQ department. He lacks the ruthlessness that you’d expect given his background as a former spy and does a lot of things based on emotion, but it’s not a story where MC’s retarded for real, nor is it a frustrating read b/c MC’s not one of those annoyingly stupid characters. This is a light-hearted and fun read that not only focuses on MC, but on a team of friends. It doesn’t go the traditional xianxia route, so if you like the genre and are looking for something a bit different in world-building, give this a try. I also liked the romance more than expected b/c despite ML’s faults, he doesn’t force MC and treats MC kindly after he decides to chase MC, unlike MC’s sleazebag ex.

Pros: engaging/fun/interesting plot, romance that slowly builds, love rivals that are likable/sympathetic, memorable side characters, a lot of fluffy platonic interactions

Kings of Classical Music (古典音乐之王[重生])

Synopsis: MC’s an orphan who crawled to the top relying solely on his own efforts, but right before he could finally perform in the Goldener Saal as a principal first violin, he’s betrayed and left to die by his lover. However, his soul then enters the body of a fallen genius violinist in China who also died, and with this new identity, he’s determined to get revenge and reach the peak of the classical music world.

Thoughts: If you’re looking for a great revenge story or a great climbing to the top one, this is not it. MC’s revenge was mostly completed off-screen, and his violin skills are already world level w/ the added bonus of perfect pitch due his new body, so he’s already part of the 1%. It’s not a bad story, but since I started reading this w/ different expectations, it didn’t click until I readjusted my mindset. But if you want a very light-hearted/low stress success story w/ a lot of fluff and idealistic portrayals, you’ll probably like this.

Pros: fluff is pretty cute/sweet esp towards the end, wraps things up w/ a satisfying ending, likable main/side characters

Cons: revenge aspect pretty weak given the premise, some small things here and there, possible factual inaccuracy

Catlord System (猫大王系统)

Synopsis: After falling down a mountain, MC wakes up in the body of a fat cat w/ an unreliable System in his head telling him that the only way to return to his original world is to complete missions as a cat. His first mission: accompany the Mission Target for 20 years while insuring his safety and happiness.

Thoughts: Fluff w/ various types of cats, the novel. The system/mission aspect is super weak, since MC’s mission is pretty much ‘max out ML’s love’. So really, this is more a collection of short stories featuring the love b/t a man and a cat. I’m not really sure if ML’s a zoophile, but tbh, I liked the platonic arcs more. Personally, I felt the switch from platonic to romantic was a bit abrupt despite it being many arcs in, but overall, it’s very sweet and full of fluff.

Pros: very fluffy/cute interactions, light-hearted read w/ arcs that don’t drag and are quite interesting, cat are love cats are life, platonic arcs showing the pure love b/t pet and owner

My Legend Still Exists in the Cultivation World (修真界依然有我的传说)

Synopsis: MC died during his lightning tribulation, but a mysterious blue jade sucked in his soul and after 10 thousand years, he’s reborn w/ a new body. However, the cultivation world has changed a lot since his death. Formerly rare herbs? Now sold dirt cheap on the streets. This super rare cultivation method? Used to be trash no one wanted. Also, why are bookstores filled w/ fake and over-the-top stories about his former life…

Thoughts: This is super fun and really interesting; I love it to pieces. It breaks and plays w/ tropes and provides a really great/reasonable way of inserting modern humor within an ancient cultivation world. MC’s a refreshingly fun character with a hilarious and super cute phoenix “son”. I’d rec this to anyone who likes the genre b/c this is one of those really, really good stories w/ an exciting plot that doesn’t focus on the romance, but incorporates MC and ML’s relationship in a way that adds to the story, feels very natural, and is incredibly sweet and full of love. Also, the modern day extra is hilarious

Pros: interesting/hilarious way of incorporating common tropes, engaging plot that keeps you hooked, really funny humor esp if you’re familiar w/ the genre, wonderful/natural relationship development from platonic to romantic, great side characters

Sixth Trigram (六爻)

Synopsis: As the middle child of a poor family, MC is sold by his parents to a sketchy, travelling daoist, becoming his 3rd disciple. With a princess-complex senior martial brother, a jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none second martial brother, and a brown-noser fourth martial brother (that his new master randomly picked up during their short journey back to the sect), thus begins MC’s new life as he (maybe?) embarks on the path of cultivation.

Thoughts: The world-building is really refreshing and fun. The characters aren’t the type you’ll fall in love w/ at first sight, but they grow on you and undergo wonderful character development as the story progresses. The main cast changes from unruly brats to still-kind-of-unruly adults as circumstances outside of their control force them to mature, and while all of them are terribly flawed, they’re also terribly endearing. It’s one of those stories that’s hard to describe, b/c it’s both ordinary and extraordinary at the same time. I kept hearing good things about this author, and I have to say that as the one I picked to read first, this novel did not disappoint.

Pros: interesting plot, real and rounded characters w/ flaws and strengths, character development of the main cast, charming humor and characters

Cons: not really sure how power levels worked, the romance felt a bit lackluster but that might be a personal taste issue

Contract Husbands (合约夫夫)

Tags: modern day, bl, fluff, sol, affable/energetic MC, capable/devoted ML

Synopsis: After returning home and quitting his job due to his former partner’s plagarism, MC’s set-up by his mom to meet a guy (ML) b/c apparently, even gay people need to attend marriage interviews. While MC’s already forgotten ML, ML still remembers MC and is determined not to let this chance go.

Thoughts: This is a really sweet and happy read. Most of the novel is diabetes inducing fluff b/t MC and ML, but it’s also broken up by the other ups and downs in life so the fluff never gets stale. It touches briefly on the darker topics, but it’s also done in a way that gives you hope rather than despair. If you enjoy a good romantic bl sol, definitely give this a read as it’s a very fun read that doesn’t use over-the-top “dramatic conflict” tropes and has a fulfilling ending.

Pros: super sweet fluff, nice balance of serious topics w/ cute sol, most adorable pet kitten, feel-good read about loving/supportive families/friends

Cons: some other minor details which I question the accuracy of, beginning/setup a bit weak imo

Got Amnesia, Don’t Fuss (失忆了别闹)

Synopsis: MC’s kidnapped and during his rescue, ML’s struck on the head and gets amnesia. But for some reason, MC is the only person he still remembers, so when his mom tries to trick him w/ a fake fiancee, he completely snaps and refuses believe anyone but MC. As they continue their love despite this bizarre situation, MC comes to discover facets to ML that he’d never known before in the many years they’ve dated.

Thoughts: Set in the same ‘verse as “Emperor, Don’t Fuss” (main pairing + some others show up as side characters here) though it’s not really necessary to read that to enjoy this. You’ll miss out on some background and references, but if asked to choose b/t them, I definitely liked this more. It’s very sweet and fluffy, and although somewhat cliche at times, you can feel just how much MC and ML love one another. I generally don’t read showbiz genre b/c there are certain prevalent tropes I hate, but this felt different.

Pros: very fluffy, really funny at times, a very feel-good read, enjoyable/fun character interactions

Cons: super flat/annoying/cliche villains, some overused cliches/tropes

A Feng Shui Master’s Guide to Cultivation (风水大师修仙指南)

Synopsis: After believing he’ll never wake up again, MC opens his eyes and finds himself in the body of a young mortal in a cultivation world. Since this body doesn’t have the aptitude to cultivate, he planned to live a carefree life traveling the world. However, due an unexpected gift from his master, he discovers that his feng shui knowledge from his previous life could enable him to cultivate here in a completely different way.

Thoughts: Tbh, I felt that the feng shui aspect was a bit jarring? I don’t think the author did a very good job meshing it into the xianxia setting at the start, but it gets better later (though I’m pretty ambivalent on how ‘feng shui’ was presented here). The plot’s pretty typical (MC powers up, gains friends, etc), but the relationship aspect was done quite well. The ending was a bit…well, the logical aspect of how they solve the final issue didn’t really make sense to me, but it’s a happy ending that made me wish to see more sol of MC and ML.

Pros: sweet romance that gradually/naturally develops, ML’s feelings are also described so you actually know how they both feel, interesting side characters

Cons: plot/characterization sometimes drastically drops in quality, some inconsistencies here and there, feng shui aspect a bit jarring imo

A Dragon Knight’s Daily Training Insights (龙骑士每日训练心得)

Synopsis: As a Holy Knight serving the God of Light, being suddenly confessed to and asked to “cooperate” in getting kidnapped is…shocking to say the least. Luckily, it’s no longer the Age of Legends where such customs may (or may not) have actually existed, thus MC calmly informs his chuuni dragon suitor: Kidnapping is now a crime, you know?

Thoughts: This story honestly starts off w/ a bang that had me laughing at the first chapter and eager to read more. I feel like it loses some steam after the end of the 1st case, but if you like a genre savvy narrator who’s very aware of the various tropes around him, you’ll probably like this. I wouldn’t quite label this as gag, but a lot of things aren’t taken very seriously. I loved the world setup and how MC introduces its unique culture to you, esp how it blends fantasy elements with modern tech. This is a really fun story that also has a sort-of mystery plot, but the humor takes precedence.

Pros: bringing you into the world + world-building, amazingly hilarious humor, unique blend of 2 different genres that makes it both fresh and relatable, the various ways fantasy races live in a modern-esque world, wonderful job on establishing the gap b/t reality/public image (aka it’s not a “just b/c” justification)

Cons: sometimes the plot progression feels lacking in details, the relationship development was a bit fast for my tastes, questionable off-screen bestiality, ML’s kind of a side character tbh

Transmigration to Immortal Cultivation (穿越之修仙)

Synopsis: MC died of an illness and is reborn in a xianxia-esque world. Originally, he wanted to live a carefree life, but due to having spiritual roots, he gets dragged onto the path of cultivation. Although assessed with very low aptitude and becoming a menial helper in caring for spiritual plants, his life had just started and is full of unexpected events to come.

Thoughts: I loved this and I loved MC, like, it’s so rare to have a kindhearted MC in a harsh cultivation setting that’s done really well. You can see MC’s growth as he experiences the darker side of the world, but he never goes full ruthless or forgets his innate self. It was a joy to see MC and ML’s relationship slowly go from strangers to lovers, and while romance wasn’t the focus, it really stuck out to me b/c tbh, this is the kind of romance I’d always envisioned for immortal cultivators to have (aka thank you for an ML who’s not a nympho for once). If you like cultivation stories where MC slowly gets stronger, falls in love, and experiences a lot of adventures, you’ll like this.

Pros: very engaging/interesting plot, nice slow relationship development, enjoyable power-up, overall fulfilling/exciting read w/ satisfying ending, good underlying build-up to the big bad

Qi Le (齐乐)

Synopsis: MC suddenly finds himself in the body of a cat, on a tree, and surrounded by zombies. Luckily, the zombies get defeated by ravens, but then one of them turns into a girl?! She gives him 2 crystals to eat and offers some info/advice before leaving, but not long after, a kitten shows up under the tree and starts calling him “Mama”?! Thus begins MC and his new son’s life of survival on this strange, unfamiliar planet.

Thoughts: The heartwarming tale of cat-dad!MC and his adorable kitten son surviving in a zombie apocalypse world where humanity’s extinct and Earth has become a hunting ground for aliens. There’s ally animals, mysteries to be solved, and exciting battles. There’s also so much cute b/c how could there not be when MC’s a super doting cat-dad w/ a kitten son that stashes food in his cheeks due to copying his squirrel friends. Seriously, this is a perfect blend of fluff w/ action/plot and honestly, my favorite apocalypse story, hands down. Also, as someone who usually skims battle descriptions, all I have to say is, I love the fights here like burning, seriously they’re so fun and good and everything I never knew I wanted.

Pros: amazingly wonderful characters, cute kitten fluff, cute fluff involving other animals, addicting/engaging plot that gives the zombie apocalypse a fresh spin, really funny humor, cultural world-building, 10/10 ending + extras, super exciting fight scenes, some really good underlying messages

Cons: sometimes confusing if characters are in animal or human form, some bestiality vibes, transmigration aspect/MC’s past never touched on, not sure how operation of some machinery is physically possible for certain lifeforms

My Five Elements Lack You (我五行缺你)

Synopsis: After dying from truck-kun, MC’s soul is sucked into the body of a notorious feng shui swindler who’s been captured by a real feng shui master (aka ML). Due to his special physique and ability to see what most can’t, MC thus begins his life as ML’s sort-of pupil and is dragged into the supernatural world he used to not believe in.

Thoughts: There’s a lot of relatable humor and the plot’s very fun/interesting. The author put a note that this is a spin-off of another of their works (that I dropped) so I was skeptical at first, but I’m so glad I gave this a chance. It’s a string of supernatural mystery solving that’s tied really well to an overarching plot relating to MC’s transmigration that made me laugh, cry, and feel really happy about MC and ML getting together. The ending was wonderful and the extras really fun.

Pros: very engaging/exciting plot full of captivating mysteries, hilarious/relatable humor (the friends dissing friends out of love aspect is done so well), really good blend of supernatural/real world, exciting/immersive portrayal of feng shui, transmigration aspect tied up/explained + relevant to plot

Cons: so much smoking, extra skits kind of ooc-ish esp at the beginning when MC/ML’s character setting/relationship was not romantic

Definitely Didn’t Illegally Become Sapient (才不是非法成精)

Synopsis: Betrayed by his comrades, MC dies and is reborn to 3 years ago when he was struck by lightning and gained his magical space that grows peach trees, back to before the apocalypse began. However, the 1st thing he sees is his dead body while he’s stuck in a bird cage. Wait, how come he’s in the body of his pet parrot?

Thoughts: This is a really fun read w/ a lot of comedy and an interesting twist on why the apocalypse happened. It’s a nice mix of modern day and cultivation, and w/ MC not a human, it’s completely different from the typical gone-back-in-time-to-before-the-apocalypse stories. MC’s a really fun character and his interactions w/ ML were super cute. Tbh, this feels more like a cultivation story, but I really liked its unique tone. I also loved the balance of serious plot and tsukkomi humor, and it did such a great job in tying everything up into a happy end.

Pros: really funny, interesting/unexpected plot development w/ a nice spin on both the apocalypse and MC’s 2nd chance rebirth, a nice blend of genres that doesn’t fall into cliche, great ending that bookends + ties in w/ the title

Cons: sometimes the story gets “told” instead of “shown”, what happened w/ one of the antagonists not mentioned in the end, no extras for more fluff

Villain Purifying Halo (反派白化光环)

Synopsis: MC’s a soul that’s transmigrated many times through many worlds, but always as a very minor mob character that’s offed early on. He ends up wandering into Rebirth Incorporated and tells the Villain Department’s intern salesperson that he wants to become the final boss for once. However, the world he ends up in and the “villain halo” that he’s given isn’t quite what he was promised…

Thoughts: It’s…kind of hard to describe how I feel about this. There isn’t anything specific that was bad and there were a lot of elements I liked, but for whatever reason, this didn’t click w/ me emotionally. The characters/side pairings were quite nice, the plot fairly interesting, and MC and ML made for a cute pair that had a star-crossed past, but for whatever reason, I feel pretty meh about this. Given it’s components, this should have been a story I liked a lot, but idk, I guess the way it was all put together didn’t quite enter my strike zone.

Pros: goes into some though provoking aspects, fairly interesting plot overall, explanation for MC’s transmigration, wraps things up quite nicely w/ very few loose ends, fun characters that are pretty memorable

After the Villain Resigned (反派辞职之后)

Synopsis: After completing countless villain role missions, MC finally manages to resign and separate himself from his world-hopping days with a System. He’s given a new identity and left to live out the rest of his life in the world his last mission, but for some reason, the protag refuses to ascend to the Immortal Realm and continue w/ the plot, which would lead to the destruction of the world. His former System begs MC to help in exchange for giving him a cheat, and after agreeing, he has 6 months to get the plot back on track.

Thoughts: The premise is pretty unique, and that’s what initially drew me in. Tbh, I don’t think the execution was quite as good as I hoped it would be, but I wouldn’t say it’s bad either. There’s minor things that bothered me and doesn’t feel fully fleshed out at times, but overall, it’s an interesting story, though sometimes the plot development left me side-eyeing. I guess I tend to enjoy stories that focus more on growth/development, and I probably would have liked this more if it started from when MC and ML first met instead.

Pros: interesting premise, sweet and cute interactions/dynamic b/t MC and ML, light-hearted/mindless if that’s what you’re looking for

Reading:

Records of Following a Dragon (从龙记)

Synopsis: This follows the life of MC after he’s taken in as a direct disciple by his dead uncle’s friend. However, after getting a strange fever, he starts dreaming about real events he should have no way of knowing the details about. Also, trouble starts brewing as old and new enemies begin to appear.

Thoughts: For the first

50 chapters, this is a slow-paced sol cultivation novel that feels more like wuxia b/c of how low-magic it is. Then, as the plot picks up and various mysteries appear, it gets more exciting and less sol. So far, there’s zero bl 250 chapters in as MC’s still young (if this wasn’t labeled bl I’d seriously doubt it is). It starts off slow as the cute story of a kid with the various members of his sect and morphs into a pretty suspenseful plot w/ overlapping mysteries. Currently on indefinite hiatus b/c chapters are locked (plus I don’t remember which chapter I stopped at when they weren’t locked).

Pros: calming writing that draws you in, mysteries provide a nice hook to keep you interested, very likable characters

Cons: not terribly memorable at the very beginning

As One Floating Around in Jianghu (人在江湖飘呀)

Synopsis: MC is a prince and his brother the emperor. After they got captured + tortured by a man who claims royal bloodline and a crazy martial artist who wears red, MC finally escapes but then falls down a roof to his death. He wakes up 3 years in the past and immediately gets revenge on the 1st of his enemies. But due to his 2nd enemy having extremely high martial arts and MC not knowing his name, he sets off into jianghu w/ 4 guards, aiming to become the Martial Alliance Head to complete his revenge.

Thoughts: First, MC knows zero martial arts, so basically, all his crazy plans are carried out by his very exasperated and confused shadow guards. I haven’t read a lot yet, but the tone’s very light-hearted so far w/ some 2nd hand embarrassment situations.

Cambrian Reexplosion (寒武再临)

Synopsis: With the 2nd coming of the Cambrian Explosion, all life on Earth begins to rapidly evolve, and humanity falls from the top of the food chain to the very bottom. Upon the arrival of this apocalypse, a soldier shows up at MC’s door claiming to be his escort to Beijing as per his uncle’s request. Thus begins a journey of survival in a world filled with danger.

Thoughts: According to the author, they got permission to make the setting a copy of Global Evolution (a Qidian novel I haven’t read), but the world-building is explained here and the characters/plot differ. This is a non-zombie apocalypse survival story focused on team fights w/ romance as a very minor background. MC’s a very normal person w/ no cheats/powers at the start which refreshing for apocalypse stories. The team aspect is very nice esp seeing the evolving team dynamics. The tone’s on the serious side, for those looking for this kind of story (since I usually read light-hearted ones haha).

Pros: believable development based on the premise, suspenseful plot development, cute/loving relationship, good team building/dynamic

Cons: packed-full pacing w/ barely any breathers, overall backdrop setting taken from another novel

Dropped:

Reincarnation of a Superstar (重生之名流巨星)

Synopsis: MC, a relatively unknown and gay actor, dies in a car accident and is reborn in the body of a younger, very good looking guy. Acting is his passion, so he decides to use this 2nd chance to make the dream he wasn’t able to fulfill his previous life come true, to become the king of the silver screen.

Thoughts: It got way too angsty for my tastes. It’s one of those stories where MC must have been born under a star of misfortune, and everyone else is an asshole in one way or another. I stopped at the whole ML scandal part b/c the blatant homophobia and melodrama got way too soap opera-esque for me to keep reading.

Turquoise Lotus Chronicle (青莲记事)

Synopsis: MC, formerly a girl, wakes up in the body of a lascivious, corrupt, and cruel minister in an ancient dynasty. His residence is filled with boy-toys and his position in court is both preposterous and precarious. Now that this is her life, she sets out to change others’ impression of her host body and walk down a righteous path while navigating the world of court politics.

Thoughts: I started this out of curiosity, but about 10 chapters in, I don’t think this is the type of story I can spend time slowly reading in Chinese. It has a lot of potential with plenty of humor, but I have very little patience for court politics/scheming for power, though I’d probably be willing to read this in English b/c I can skim over the parts I don’t like. The first chapter was really hilarious and MC is very frank and self aware of the whole transmigration trope, but the setting really doesn’t fit my tastes.

The Villain is Determined to Reform (反派立志要洗白)

Synopsis: MC is a normal guy who likes video games. The guild master of the game he plays gives him a novel to read, but before he could finish it, he gets run over by a truck and dies. He wakes up as a villain in that novel and is told that he can come back to life in his former world if he completes a mission in this one. His mission: maxing out the protagonist’s exhilaration.

Thoughts: This starts when they’re young and MC (who’s older) proceeds to spoil ML rotten b/c he knows nothing about child-rearing and basically raises a tyrant, yandere ML. I didn’t like ML at all and I’m pretty sure he won’t grow into a character I would like given the direction of the story (both tyrant and yandere are types I really dislike). I’ve been told that ML gets better though I probably won’t continue b/c I’m avoiding yandere MLs.

I’m an NPC (我是NPC)

Thoughts: The beginning was really funny as MC stumbles to figure out how modern things work. The former host of his body wanted to be an actor and had scheduled an audition, so pretending to be him, MC goes and ends up landing the role. I pretty much stopped reading there and then skimmed the ending b/c I wasn’t in the mood for showbiz shenanigans. The humor was also dying off and it seemed like the story was going in a more serious direction than I generally prefer, but I might come back to this in the future.

The Entire World is Forcing the Heroine to Turn Queer (全世界都在逼女主弯)

Synopsis: MC ends up as the heroine of an R18 game where her future is getting raped by a bunch of guys. She desperately tries to escape this fate, but this game world robs her of her strength every time she’s in danger, so she’s left powerless to resist and can only rely on outside help.

Thoughts: I quite wanted to finish this b/c it’s the 1st gl Chinese novel I’ve touched and a rival girl/game heroine pairing, but between the constant threat of rape hanging over MC’s head, the forceful “correction” of the game world, and the increasingly more scumbag would-be rapists that keep popping up one after another, I gave up. I skimmed the ending and it seems like this story gets a lot darker and the illogical/rapey actions do get an explanation, but honestly, a plot centered around avoiding rape while being scared witless is not something I’m comfortable reading about.

The Daily Task of Preventing My Disciple from Turning to the Dark Side (每天都要防止徒弟黑化)

Synopsis: MC is a genius alchemist who’s only interested in pills and cultivation. His only disciple betrayed humankind and he was blamed for failing as the master, tortured, and then killed. After his death, he wakes up back in the past to before his disciple joined their sect, and this time around, vows to guide his disciple down the correct path while steering clear of his former so-called friends who had framed and betrayed him his last life.

Thoughts: So I got to chapter 64, and then shit hit the fan. Basically, ML rapes MC while MC’s drugged w/ an aphrodisiac (MC would not have allowed this if he wasn’t compromised). ML was perfectly coherent, knew MC was drugged, and had the antidote but refused even though MC begged him for it. Then, while MC’s completely incapacitated, he binds MC into a death marriage pact that can’t be altered, can’t be erased, and all its terms were 100% dictated by ML alone. So not only was MC raped, he was also forced to sign his life away without any say. ML had already started annoying me, but at this point, he went straight past my bottom line and into irredeemable scumbag territory. I don’t care how much he says he “loves” MC, this is not something you do to someone you love, no exceptions. Eat shit and die, you literal piece of rotten trash. That this is a “happy ending” is just ughhhhhhh.

Doctor Entering Police Investigations (医入警门)

Synopsis: In a city so full with crime even the government has given up, a single cop (MC) struggles in seeking justice, though it’s been months since his department last solved a case. But with a new murder inside a hospital, he meets a strange doctor with surprising deduction/observation skills, and together, they work to solve this mystery. However, just as it ends, they realize that this case wasn’t entirely as they deduced, and something much darker lurked in the shadows.

Thoughts: I only read the 1st mystery, which is also the shortest I think. It was alright but not engaging enough for me to continue unless I get confirmation that future mysteries are much better. There were some leaps of logic that I personally found…off-putting, though maybe not everyone will think so. Anyways, it’s a rare bl + murder mystery genre, though not one I’m currently interested in continuing.

Multi-Transmigrations: Mob Character Romance System (快穿炮灰恋爱系统)

Synopsis: MC, angry at the treatment of a mob character in a novel he’s reading, accidentally clicks [Yes] to a strange popup and becomes bound to a System. He’s told that he can undo this binding after he completes a certain number of missions where he takes over as a mob character in a novel, change their fate, and fulfill their life’s wish.

Thoughts: I got halfway through the 2nd arc, and at this point, I’m pretty sure this isn’t a style I like. There’s no tension/stakes, and the 1st arc was very anti-climactic. Nothing really happened, and it felt more like reading a bland summary than a story. The concept’s nice, but the execution’s very lacking.

The Villainous Sect Master Always Likes Courting Death (反派教主总喜欢作死)

Synopsis: MC ends up transmigrating into the body of the new Sect Master of the Demonic Sect. He’s told that after he gets 100% completion on the plot, he’ll be able to return to his original world.

Thoughts: Overall, I guess the plot’s…messy? Not to say there aren’t interesting points, but MC’s voice is very immature which does not bode well for 1st person pov. Also, some parts are…weird? Like how the original protag suddenly went crazy yandere evil, or how the ML(?) fell in love w/ MC even though MC killed him? Anyways, with pov changes that randomly shift from 1st person to 3rd person, plus love interests that all seem very yandere, I don’t think this is worth the time reading.

Old Ancestor, You Dropped Your Passerby Status (老祖，你酱油瓶掉了)

Synopsis: MC transmigrated into a novel as the protagonist’s master, a very minor and very mob character that has very little screen time the original plot. But with one small mistake, the plot is changed and MC finds it harder and harder to get things back on track.

Thoughts: It’s another disciple falls in love with his master story, but it doesn’t really have the charm that grabs your attention right at the start, for me anyways. MC’s trying to stay faithful to the plot, but he’s kind of air-headed so of course he fails. I guess neither MC nor ML really appealed to me despite the synopsis sounding like something I would enjoy, and my reading list is long enough that I feel like I should spend my limited time on something else.

Multi-Transmigrations: I’m About to Die (快穿之我快死了)

Synopsis: MC has terrible luck and after spending an all-nighter playing games, he wakes up in a different body w/ a strange System in his head telling him he’s dead, but if he completes enough missions, he can return to his original world. His mission: find the person w/ the highest evil thoughts rating and cleanse it to 0.

Thoughts: Got halfway through the 2nd arc and tbh, there’s not much that I liked. Idk if the story’s trying to take itself seriously or not b/c while the tone is on the frivolous side, this novel needs a fuckton of trigger warnings. In the 1st arc, MC’s a drug addict who sells his body, and in the 2nd, he’s a prisoner in jail. Basically, a lot of aspects made me uncomfortable, so I stopped.

Devil Emperor Martial Lord Transmigration (穿越魔皇武尊)

Synopsis: MC transmigrates into a tragic mob stepping stone who literally gets eaten by the twisted protagonist of the 1st harem novel he wrote. Luckily, he still has time to make preparations to escape this doomed fate, and he’s determined to do so by preventative measures and avoiding all contact w/ the protagonist.

Thoughts: So, ML’s a yandere w/ a warped personality who rapes MC and tries to control his entire life. I’ve reached the point where I instantly drop novels w/ this kind of development, and it doesn’t help that ML’s also someone who “eats” ppl to steal their cultivation, just fyi. But if you like this kind of setting, you might enjoy this story as MC’s quite likable and the plot’s fairly interesting up to the point where I stopped.

Strongly Pampered Male Wife (强宠男妻)

Synopsis: MC’s family, due to bad decisions leading to almost bankruptcy, sells MC as a male bride to a rich family. After reluctantly agreeing and severing all ties w/ his family, MC’s determined to endure this one year contract, divorce, and then go live his own life. However, his future husband has other plans.

Thoughts: This is…quite jarring. I’m not sure how else to describe it, but there’s a lot of inconsistencies and minor things that really bothered me. Like, the characters are sold to you one way, but then presented in an entirely different way, and all the villains are the “super shameless 2d no morals makes you mad just by reading” type. Also, the setting’s modern day, which surprised me given the whole “selling a male bride” premise. The romance didn’t click w/ me either, b/c while I’m ok w/ love at first sight, this is love at first sight taken to an illogical extreme that feels really forced.

Shake the Sky (撼天)

Synopsis: MC transmigrated into a rock and spent hundreds of years w/ a spiritual herb as his only companion. In return for always protecting it, the spiritual herb exhausts its power to give MC a human form. Now, MC embarks on a journey to revive his friend while following his own desires.

Thoughts: In short, an OP from the start human-turned-rock-turned-human’s adventure in a cultivation world full of greedy, bastard villains. I’m not really sure why MC claims to be a villain, but his “villainous” actions all get misinterpreted as being good, though he’s more of a chaotic neutral. There’s like, a lot of small things that annoyed me, and those added up, plus some aspects that flat out broke my suspension of disbelief. While I didn’t dislike this per se, I would rather spend my time reading something I’d enjoy more.
