Not Bad
NHK was long a family favourite. Their English service nowadays is pretty basic, however, functioning mostly as a travel brochure for Japan. That’s nice enough. But I miss some of the programmes they used to port from regular NHK such as Minna no Uta, but no longer have.
And their Chinese service seems drastically scaled back of late. Under the “multilingual” heading, one can access some programmes under simplified Chinese, but only one under proper Chinese (正體中文). This is the same with their website, which is odd as all they need is to automatically convert.
NHK World is alright. It lacks some of the quirky character of yesteryear, somehow. But good that they keep producing.
I like it, but.
Overall I like it. A few things bug me, though. 1) I’d prefer fewer voiceovers and more subtitles. I’m trying to learn Japanese, and their limited number of English talent is, well, annoying and distracting. At least give an option to hear the original Japanese or dubbed. 2) They don’t seem to have enough bandwidth dedicated to the service. I don’t have problems streaming any services except NHK World. It’s not all the time, but it’s enough to be annoying. 3) Ditch the hourly news programs. I like the news programs, but they’re on far too frequently. 4) I’d like to see more programming that’s available on NHK in Japan. I get that this is free and in Japan you’re supposed to pay, but I’d like to see more programming that isn’t all about the tourism. Don’t get me wrong — as an outsider that’s also incredibly valuable. But would love to see more dramas that are being viewed in Japan.
Excellent access to Japanese culture & News
I’ve visited Japan twice and always come home wanting more. Recently discovered the NHK World app for my iPad and for my AppleTV.
From news shows (without any kind of typical western slant) you can keep up on newsworthy events from Japan, Asia, the USA and the rest of the world. Some of the news anchors/reporters don’t have the typical western polish, but honestly, I find that very refreshing.
They have many shows designed to inform you about Japanese culture with a heavy emphasis on travel. The iPad app also has access to basic Japanese language learning and lots of fun shows that will introduce you to Japanese culture.

Missing a major component, but still serviceable
The app is currently no longer capable of casting across to google’s chromecast (the app will connect, but fail to cast any program across). This has already been reported multiple times.
As a stand alone app on a portable device it serves its function well, allowing viewers up-to-date broadcasts of NHK world tv, in addition to a limited back catalogue on demand. Some of its programming provides a better tour guide to future visitors than most travel guides, and the sumo highlights are more than enough for casual viewers to keep up to date (and whet the appetite of new, potential fans of the sport).
The app has some measure of customization available, allowing for an easier/quicker navigation through the back-catalogue (although it would be nice if viewers could choose to make a playlist, or something similar for programs they personally enjoy most). It would also be helpful to be notified when certain programs are available on their schedule.
All in all, a decent app that serves as an excellent resource for admirers of Japanese culture, and those who wish to travel there eventually.
Hopefully, by the time you’re reading this, the casting issue will be dealt with (and the compression issues on some broadcasts quality will be resolved too).

Hi, I’d like to be able to arrange the show in order of my favorite and setting up the tabs myself. It take very long time to find Science View, Lunch On and the Professionals each day, and be able to save the video and watch later, I can never catch the right day to watch. If I can pick the videos for next week, save it and watch it all at the end of the week would be great.
I’d like to save my favorite show to the top tab bar(where the Sumo tab bar is) and put all my favorite show in it, would be much for easier for me to find where they are
ありがとうございます (🇦🇺)
I’ve had this app for around three years now. I watch at least one to two shows a week. I couldn’t be happier with it. A multifaceted experience of Japanese culture, in English. The on-demand program list is regularly updated. My favorite shows are Design Talks Plus, Japanology Plus, Somewhere Street, 72 Hours, Tokyo Eye, Asia Insight, Cycling Around Japan, Hometown Stories and Core Kyoto. Please continue this high quality and valuable service. The inspiration it provides is deeply appreciated.

Nhk world live
Me agrado ya que sí disfruto viéndolo y ingles se me es más fácil de entender y de manera de retroceder un poco de video de programa me gusta aun que le falta más programas
Top Selected Content
NHK World Japan has been one of my favorite news channel for a quick update on the world. Documentaries and lots of original programming makes this online channel unique not to mention that is a free channel online. What else could one ask for when watching an International version of Japanese public television? Oh yes, the app should work with chromecast/and roku cast instantly, English subtitles should always be available for all content sometimes it works for 14 other languages except for English, there’s a certain delay on its broadcast, should be corrected soon. I feel that after watch NHK World for overa decade, it should be a 24hrs broadcasting channel rather than a four gap period of broadcast and repeat. NHK World news is outstandingly professional but it should last longer that 15 minute blocks, it’s about time we’re in 2021.

Great Content, Decent Performance, Minor bug
I’ve used the NHK World News app ever since I discovered the station while I was an exchange student in Germany. I thoroughly enjoy the Japanese perspective on global world events, and in particular, I enjoy the train segments with their beautiful narration and landscapes.
I’ve updated my review to 4 stars since they’ve greatly improved the performance and reliability of the app! My only complaint now is that when I manually go to full screen mode, there is a pause button in the center of the screen that won’t go away until I press the closed caption button and press “off”!
Bring back full casting please!
The app was great a few months ago. And then they did a huge update that removed the ability to cast the app to your TV. They’ve finally brought back some functionality of casting the live streaming. However you are still unable to cast individual shows you want to watch! Please bring back this function because it’s much easier to watch on the TV. NHK is otherwise a wonderful app that shares a lot of interesting news!
COVID-19 VACCINATION RATES
Best Asian news souce
Disappointing these last several months
NHK is first and foremost a new channel. For the most part 30 minutes of each hour is dedicating news. It gets very repetitive and the news is obviously left biased. Since the COVID outbreak most of the news is dedicated to that. Many of the news short features are recycled from news of previous weeks and months.
The rest of the programming is interesting. The travel programs in particular are great to watch. Medical Frontiers is another great show.
Many of the shows suffer from over eager hosts who are distracting from the subject at hand. It’s too bad.
Despite my negativity, it’s worth a download and try it for yourself.
No features
The only big complaint is that is missing many of the basic video app 101 functions: you can’t save or bookmark videos. You can’t make an account, so even if you could, say, make a playlist on your phone app it wouldn’t then be accessible in your AppleTV app. It’s just kind of as rudimentary a video app as one could possibly make. It plays videos, that’s it.
Great content, though it would be nice to see more back-catalog stuff made available (like Takeshi Art Beat, say)
Where are all the programs?
I loved the NHK world app before the recent Nov 2019 update. Now I can’t access all the different programming I would regularly watch. I’ve clicked through all the different pages to try to find them to no avail. If it’s there it’s poorly designed and not intuitive. And if they have disappeared why? Yes it’s great now it’s available in 17 languages and it’s nice there’s access to radio/podcast but when you can’t watch the amazing shows like CoreKyoto, design talks plus, fashion express. what’s the point? Please correct this, as I am a total fan of your impeccable programming and usually only access thru the app.
