London Zip Code

The London postal district is the area in England of 241 square miles (620 km2) to which mail addressed to the London post town is delivered.

The General Post Office under the control of the Postmaster-General directed Sir Rowland Hill to devise the area in 1856 and throughout its history, it has been subject to reorganization and division into increasingly smaller postal units, with the early loss of two compass points and a minor retraction in 1866.

It was integrated by the Post Office into the national postcode system of the United Kingdom during the early 1970s and corresponds to the N, NW, SW, SE, W, WC, E, and EC postcode areas.

What is UK Postcode or UK Zipcode:

UK Zipcode or Postcode consist of letters and numbers used for UK addressing and delivery system

A postcode in the UK usually consists of two alphanumeric codes that identify a post town and a few addresses within it. The Outward code (Outcode) contains two to four characters, while the Inward code (Incode) always contains three. The Outcode identifies the postcode area. It starts with one or two letters and ends with one, two, or three digits. Then a space and the Incode, which indicates the sector and delivery point (usually a group of around 15 addresses). This three-character incode starts with a number (indicating a district sector) and ends with two letters (denoting delivery points which are allocated to streets, sides of a street or individual properties). Postcodes are usually, but not always, named after major cities, like B for Birmingham. Some are geographical, like HS for Outer Hebrides and FY for Fylde (the region around Blackpool).

Each UK Postcode district has a number of non-alphabetized post towns that typically contain one or more postcode districts. For example, the GU postcode area, named after Guildford, covers much of southern England. GU1 and GU2 are the postcode districts for Guildford. Woking, a post town in the GU22 postal district, is 6 miles away. The prefix 1 indicates the central business district of the town/city, e.g. B1 (Birmingham), LS1 (Leeds), M1 (Manchester) (Manchester). These are treated either alphabetically (particularly in London, where Chingford is E4 and Walthamstow is E17) or geographically (the Outer Hebrides area HS numbers the districts north to south).

As a rule, large post towns have higher-numbered districts in the outlying areas. However, the post towns within a postal area can be numbered for various reasons. Except for the town named after the postal area, this is always 1. The postcode alone cannot reliably infer a postcode district’s centrality within a postcode area. Examples of SE1 include much of Central London south of the Thames, while SE2 includes Abbey Wood at the Elizabeth Line’s terminus. Check the postcode.

Postcodes are used for many purposes besides mail sorting, such as calculating insurance premiums, routing software, and census enumeration. In addition to storing postcode boundaries, the Postcode Address File database also stores full address data for approximately 29 million addresses (delivery points). In 1917, London was divided into broad numbered subdivisions, which were expanded to other cities in 1934. However, this is against Royal Mail guidelines, which require a complete address.

Formatting

Postcodes are alphanumeric and range from 6 to 8 characters (including a space). The outward code and the inward code are separated by a single space in each postcode. The postcode area and district make up the outward code. The inward code is the postcode sector and unit. Postcodes include «SW1W 0NY», «PO16 7GZ», «GU16 7HF», and «L1 8JQ».

Sorting

Postcodes are used to sort letters manually using labeled frames or increasingly with letter-coding systems with machine assistance. Automated sorting that reads printed postcodes is best suited for mail with a consistent layout and addressing format.

A long string of «faced» letters is presented to a keyboard operator at a coding desk who types the postcodes in coloured phosphor dots onto the envelopes. The associated machine uses these dots to direct letter bundles into the appropriate delivery office-specific bags. The bundles can be further sorted using the dots of the inward sorting code, ensuring that each delivery round receives only its own letters. This feature is only used in large sorting offices that handle high volumes of mail.

In the absence of postcodes, the operator reads the post town’s name and inserts a code sufficient for outward sorting to the post town. The letter bundles are transported to the delivery office by road, air, or train. Manually handled mail is «set in,» i.e. sorted into the walk order that allows the deliverer to make the most convenient round trip. The latter is now being automated by walk sequencing machines.

Integrated mail processors

They read the postcode and convert it to two phosphorus barcodes, which the machines then print and read, sorting the mail to the correct outward postcode. Letters can also be sorted sequentially using a Compact Sequence Sorter (CSS) that reads the incoming postcode in the order a walking postman/woman will deliver them. An item with an inward-facing phosphorous barcode has an outer-facing phosphorous barcode.

The UK is Europe’s biggest island. It consists of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, plus numerous islands worldwide. Except for a land border with Ireland, the country is entirely surrounded by water.

The United Kingdom occupies 242,900 square miles of land in northwest Europe. It has a population of over 63 million, with over 8 million living in London. Liverpool, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield, Bristol, Belfast, and Leicester are also large cities in the UK. The official language is English, and the currency is sterling. It is a parliamentary monarchy. The United Kingdom is a major player in global politics and economics.

History of the UK

The UK has a long and convoluted history. The United Kingdom and its people believe that the area now known as Britain was first inhabited thousands of years ago during the Ice Age. The UK’s land mass was once connected to the rest of Europe. The UK was not considered sovereign until the 1707 union of Scotland and England. In 1800, a treaty incorporated Ireland into the union.

With its global power and influence, the Union grew. The UK controlled a quarter of the world’s land at the turn of the century. After WWII, the country lost control of several colonies. United Kingdom comprises British Isles, Northern Ireland, and a few other nearby islands. Until 2016, the UK was a member of the EU. Nonetheless, its impact on global processes is unique.

The UK Economy

The UK has a strong, developed economy that led the Industrial Revolution in the nineteenth century. A military victor after WWII, but a crippled manufacturing sector. The postwar recovery was slow, and it took nearly 40 years for the British economy to become competitive, with EC membership providing additional stimulus after 1973. (which was eventually succeeded by the European Union [EU]). In the 1990s, the economy grew at a similar rate to other advanced industrial nations.

Manufacturing’s contribution to GDP has dwindled to around one-fifth, with services driving growth. Its main trading partners shifted from the former empire to other EU members, who accounted for over half of its tangible goods trade. The US remained a major trading and investment partner, and Japan invested heavily in domestic manufacturing. The UK is a popular choice for American and Japanese companies to base themselves in Europe Other rapidly developing East Asian economies cited the UK’s open market as a significant outlet.

Euroskepticism, a movement advocating political and economic disengagement from the EU, gained momentum in the UK in the 1990s. Support for this position grew so strong in the second decade of the twenty-first century that voters were asked to vote on the UK’s continued EU membership. On January 31, 2020, the United Kingdom will officially withdraw from the European Union, kicking off a period of economic transition and uncertainty.

Throughout the 1980s, Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government sought to privatize or denationalize previously state-owned businesses. Tens of thousands of jobs in coal mining and heavy industry were lost due to privatization and widespread labor unrest. While the nation’s standard of living improved, the South East, including London, prospered more than the heavily industrialized West Midlands, northern England, Clydeside, and Belfast. Inequality widened in the 1980s and 1990s. Until the late 1990s, both unemployment and inflation rates remained high. The country’s economic strength remained derived from its global financial center status. Its offshore gas and oil exploration in the North Sea between 1967 and 1975 reduced reliance on coal and imported oil and boosted the economy.

London Postcodes List

Postcodes are the UK equivalent of USA zip codes. They are the most important part of any address when sending postal mail. Whereas street names are in no way unique to any one area, full extended postcodes are all unique and together with the house number they will uniquely identify an individual address. For example one of the best known addresses in London is the Prime Ministers residence at 10 Downing Street, London, England SW1 2AA. However that address is totally identified simply by stating «10 SW1 2AA». No two postcode addresses are identical when you include the house number and the full postcode extended postcode. So if you ever need to find an address make sure you have the postcode for it or you could end up totally in the wrong place. In fact postcodes can be different for two sides of the same street (the difference will be in the last 3 digits for the extended postcode). We talk about postcodes and extended postcodes because in general use its normal to simply locate areas by the first 2 to 4 digits. If you look at the list in the table below you will each area requires just 2 to 4 digits, and this is the case for the whole of the UK. Only when it comes to specific address would you need the full extended postcode. Taking the above example Downing Street will be referred to as being in the SW1 area. The SW1 identifies it as being in Victoria/Westminster. The area part of the postcode and the full extended part are easily identified because they are written with a gap. So in our example we write SW1 then 2AA to identify the Street as being SW1 2AA.

Central London areas are divided into what are known as LONDON POSTCODES. Each small section of London is allocated a 1-3 letter prefix that corresponds to its compass location and then a following number and 2 letters to distinguish it from adjoining streets within that area. For instance N3 is Finchley, while the adjacent area is N2 which is East Finchley, and they are both located in North London. The Centre of London is given the letter ‘C’ for CENTRAL, and is split into WC1 (where WC stands for West Central), WC2, EC1 (East Central), EC2, EC3, EC4. For anyone who doesn’t know London that system is a little misleading. The EC1-4 postcodes are actually referred to now as the ‘City of London’. The W1 postcode is often thought of as central London because it is the Tourist and clubbing centre, it’s also known as the West End, but it is actually slightly West of centre. Officially London centres on Charing Cross Station in WC1.
Each compass point starts with the main district, for example N1 is centred on Islington. From then on all areas sharing that compass point are given a number that corresponds with the alphabetical order, N2 East Finchley N3 Finchley Central N4 Finsbury Park and so on.

Oddities:
Not all compass points are used within London. For example while there is both South East (SE) and South West (SW) within London, NE (North East) is used for Newcastle nearly 300 miles away.

Postcodes cover the whole of the United Kingdom with only the ones in the list below known as London postcodes. While there are many more postcodes that cover what is now considered London, i.e. within the M25 motorway, the ones below are recognised London specific postcodes.

To further confuse matters London is also divided into what are called Boroughs and Constituencies. A London Borough is basically a form of local government, raising local taxes and administering local services. So London postcodes divide London on a geographical basis for postal sorting while London Boroughs divide London by boundaries between local authorities (boroughs). London Boroughs have a larger area than London postcodes. London has 32 Boroughs.
A London Constituency, again different from postcodes and boroughs, is a an area drawn up to elect members to sit on the London Assembly. The purpose of the London Assembly is to oversee the work of the London Mayor. They have specific powers which include being able to amend the Mayors budget plans for London if they have a 2/3rds majority in favour of doing so.

In 1999 E1 was split into two postcodes, E1 plus the new E1W, however generally E1 is still used to cover both districts.
In 2011 E20 was created to cover the area around the Olympic Village.

What is the ZIP Code of London?

The Royal Mail does not use zip codes. They have a much more sophisticated system called Post Codes. The code is a mixture of letters and numbers where the first one or two characters are letters and indicate the “post town” followed by one or two numbers indicating a subdivision of that post town delivery area (and in more rural areas that subdivision can be quite a long way from the post town).

Then you get a space and a number and two more letters. That section after space can be used to identify a group of houses (rarely more than 30) or even a department in a company. It’s quite possible to address something using no more than the house number and postcode (I’ve tried it!). The UK does not have “Zip codes”. It has “Postcodes”. These operate at a very local level, each postcode covering typically a few dozen private addresses or a handful of commercial ones.

The postcode is in three segments, the first being alphabetic signifying a town city or London area, the second a numeric sub-area, and the third segment a discrete alphanumeric local area signifier for the most granular level.

So, for example, completely at random,

E17 8EG refers to East London sub-area 17 local signifier 8EG for odd-numbered houses in Harris street. NW1 3SX refers to North West London sub-area 1 local signifier for a number of Flats in Richmond House Park Village East. You can search addresses and related postcodes in the Royal Mail Postcode Finder on the internet.

Postal codes in the UK are also known as postcodes. The initial postcode system divided London and other large cities in the UK. A full postcode designates an area with a number of addresses or a single major delivery point.

Are there ZIP codes in the UK?

Postal codes used in the United Kingdom, British Overseas Territories, and Crown dependencies are known as postcodes (originally, postal codes). They are alphanumeric and were adopted nationally between 11 October 1959 and 1974, having been devised by the General Post Office (Royal Mail).

What is a valid postcode in the UK?

Guidance on recording valid postcodes: The postcode is a combination of between five and seven letters/numbers, which define four different levels of a geographic unit. It is part of a coding system created and used by the Royal Mail across the United Kingdom for sorting mail.

Central London areas are divided into what are known as LONDON POSTCODES. Each small section of London is allocated a 1-3 letter prefix that corresponds to its compass location and then the following number and 2 letters to distinguish it from adjoining streets within that area. A postcode used in a SatNav typically takes you within 50 yards of your intended destination in urban areas.

What is the ZIP Code of London?

The postal district has also been known as the London postal area. The County of London was much smaller, at 117 square miles (300 km2), but Greater London is much larger at 607 square miles (1,570 km2). Zipcodes are an American postal system. The UK uses postcodes. A postcode typically refers to about 15 properties.

London has many postcodes but they typically fall into E (East), EC (East Central), W (West), WC (West Central), N (North), NW (North West), SE (South East), SW (South West). In addition to these postcodes, Greater London contains other postcodes that were originally part of the home counties prior to the expansion of London.

Friends, the postcodes for Downing Street are SW1A 2AA. The postcode for Buckingham Palace is SW1A 1AA. The postcode for the Tower of London is EC3N 4AB. Postal code london. No such thing as a London wide code.

In addition, due to the massive area of Greater London, some of it is covered by postcodes for areas that were always outside the London postal districts so, EN, UB, RM, and a few others I’ve forgotten.

There is even a tiny bit of a London postcode in the E4 area, I believe, that is outside the M25, the London Orbital Motorway, which many views as a de facto London boundary. If you care to look/search there are plenty of questions and answers, here on the internet, about London postcodes their history, and stuff like that.

Conclusion:

There are no zip codes in London. There are around 2 million addresses. A single postcode consists of around 30 addresses in close proximity. Like a 100 yard stretch of a road. Or even just a single house.

If postcode starts with, and there is a number at the place of *

For example, the postcode for 10 Downing Street is SW1A 2AA

The Buckingham palace is SW1A 1AA

London doesn’t have zip codes … exactly. We have postal codes and each one is different depending on where you live, north, southeast or west. And sometimes even how far down a street you live. The good thing about it is that you can give someone a house number and the street code and end up at their door with no more information than that.

Codes are made up of 2 letters and either 1 or 2 letters space and then a number followed by 2 letters: example: NW6 5BQ… I have no idea if that exists.. but NW6 does (Northwest London). Then you have towns, Camden, Ealing, Islington, Greenwich, etc. It’s easier when you’re used to it, a nightmare if you’re trying to figure it out! I hope that helps!

Elements of a Postcode

The first part of the Postcode e.g. PO1 is called the outward code as it identifies the town or district to which the letter is to be sent for further sorting.

The second part of the postcode e.g. 1EB is called the inward code.

This identifies the particular sector in the town or district to which the letter has been delivered and a thoroughfare, part of a thoroughfare or an individual address within that sector. The maximum number of delivery points covered by one postcode is 100 and the average is 15.

Postcode Area
This is the largest geographical unit of the postcode.
Each one comprises one or two alpha characters generally chosen to be a mnemonic of the area e.g. MK for Milton Keynes, SO for Southampton. There are currently 124 Postcode areas including Guernsey (GY) Jersey (JE) and the Isle of Man (IM).

Postcode District
Each postcode area is divided into a number of districts which are represented by the numerical portion of each part of the postcode.
These numbers range from 0 to 99 e.g. MK42. In London, a further alpha character is used to divide some districts into subdivisions e.g. EC1A.

Postcode sectors
Sectors are numbered 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0.
It should be noted that when sorting postcodes into order, sector 0 is the tenth sector rather than the first. Postal code london. Смотреть фото Postal code london. Смотреть картинку Postal code london. Картинка про Postal code london. Postal code londonZIP Code of London

Many respondents have already pointed out the basic problems underlying this question:

What does not seem to have been highlighted is that London was effectively the birthplace of postal coding systems – because it was already a very large and densely populated place when the universal postal system was introduced by the British Parliament which was, and remains, based in London.

The original postal district covered over 240 square miles when the universal post was established with the Penny post in the 1840s. London’s urban population was still growing as was the volume of posts and by the 1850s it was necessary to divide London into smaller chunks, each new district with its main sorting office.

These were based on points of the compass:

South was later abolished and merged between SE and SW, as was NE which merged with E. Each district has a ‘Head District’, which is where the primary district sorting office would be found (not always the case today), with sub-sorting offices where the ‘walks’ for delivery were assembled around the remainder of the district.

As an example, SW postal district straddles the Thames but had its Head District (SW1) in the vicinity of Westminster where the Post Office expected the highest volume and the post of the highest importance.

The rest of the district was divided into sub-districts which were numbered consecutively based on the initial letter of the town or center in which the local office was based. This district was a center of population growth which led to further divisions and a new Head District SW11, similarly, the satellites were numbered in the same fashion:

SW2 is Brixton, SW3 is Chelsea, SW4 is Clapham, SW5 is Earl’s Court, etc.

SW12 is Balham, SW13 is Barnes, SW14 is Mortlake, SW15 is Putney, etc. In my lifetime we had the next part of the codes added. My old home in the Brixton area is now SW2 2DH. There are about five codes covering that one street of about 100 houses. Really high density or high volume areas had an additional digit added, so, for example, SW1A 1AA is one of the postal codes for the House of Commons in the Houses of Parliament in Westminster (The Head District for SW).

That’s just for the Victorian London Postal District, Greater London is now much bigger and includes postcodes that reflect the names of the larger towns that were brought into London in 1965. Croydon for instance has CR0 (unusual for a zero to be used), but its original Head District was based on the old sorting office in Old Town (it now shares facilities with many other districts near Gatwick Airport).

What is the zip code of London UK?

By the 1850s, the rapid growth of the metropolitan area meant it became too large to operate efficiently as a single post town. A Post Office inquiry into the problem had been set up in 1837 and a House of Commons committee was initiated in 1843. In 1854 Charles Canning, the Postmaster-General, set up a committee at the Post Office in St. Martin’s Le Grand to investigate how London could best be divided for the purposes of directing mail.

In 1856, of the 470 million items of mail sent in the United Kingdom during the year, approximately one-fifth (100 million) were for delivery in London, and half of these (50 million items) also originated there. The General Post Office under the control of the Postmaster-General devised the area in 1856. Sir Rowland Hill [3] produced an almost perfectly circular area of 12 miles (19 km) radius from the central post office at St. Martin’s Le Grand in central London.

As originally devised, it extended from Waltham Cross in the north to Carshalton in the south and from Romford in the east to Sunbury in the west — six counties at the time if including the City of London. Within the district, it was divided into two central areas and eight compass points which operated much like separate post towns.

Each was named “London” with a suffix (EC, WC, N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, and NW) indicating the area it covered; each had a separate head office. The system was introduced in 1857 and completed on 1 January 1858.

Age Groups Embed This Back to Top

Across the UK as a whole, the median age is 39. In general, inner city areas show high concentrations of people aged 18-30, suburbs show larger numbers of small children and adults aged 30-50, and rural and small towns are more popular with older workers and retirees. Many poorer areas lack a majority age group, which is due in part to the people in that area being constrained by circumstance rather than being able to choose where to retire, raise a family or grow up.

South,
North,
West,
East,
Centre.

(Aldgate),
(Bethnal Green),
(Bow),
(Clapton),
(Dalston),

Postal code london.

Postal code london.

Postal codes in the United Kingdom

UK postal code s are known as postcodes.

Postcode history

The Post Office experimented with electromechanical sorting machines in the late 1950s. These devices would present an envelope to an operator, who would press a button indicating which bin to sort the letter into. Postcodes were suggested to increase the efficiency of this process, by removing the need for the sorter to remember the correct sorting for as many places. [«New Scientist», 21 July 2007, p16]

Format

The format of UK postcodes is generally:

The part of the code before the space is the «outward code» or «out code» used to direct mail from one sorting office to the destination sorting office, while the part after the space is the «inward code» or «in code» used to sort the mail into individual delivery rounds. The outward code can be split further into the «area» part (letters identifying one of 124 postal areas) and the «district» part (usually numbers); similarly, the inward code is split into the «sector» part (number) and the «unit» part (letters). Each postcode identifies the address to within 100 properties (with an average of 15 properties per postcode), although a large business may have a single code

In addition to postcodes, «Delivery Point Suffixes» (DPS) have been developed to uniquely identify each delivery point (a letterbox) within a single postcode. A DPS is two-character (a digit and a letter) code optionally appended to postcode. Use of DPS codes is mandatory for Mailsort barcodes generation.

Greater London postcodes

In the London Postal Area postcodes are slightly different, being based on the 1856 system of Postal Districts which was refined in 1917 by numbering the 163 Sub-Districts; predating by many years the introduction of postcodes in the 1960s:

* In parts of central London, WC and EC (West Central and East Central)
* In the rest of the London Postal Area, N, NW, SW, SE, W and E.

The London postal districts rarely coincide with the boundaries of the London borough s (even the former, smaller Metropolitan Boroughs). The numbering system appears arbitrary on the

A further complication is that in some of the most central London areas, a further gradation has been necessary to produce enough postcodes, giving codes like EC1A 1AA.

Other areas’ postcodes

A single numbering sequence was split between Manchester and Salford. Letters would be addressed to Manchester 1 or Salford 4. However in the 1960s, all the districts in both Manchester and Salford gained «M» postcodes, so «Salford 4» became M4, etc., much to the chagrin of Salfordians. The old coding lives on in a handful of street signs which are still embossed with «Salford 4» etc, at the bottom.

Glasgow shared with London a distinction from all other UK cities as it had compass postal districts due to its claimed status as the Second City of the British Empire, i.e., C, W, NW, N, E, S, SW, SE. When postcodes were introduced these were mapped into the new ‘G’ postcode area thus: C1 became G1, W1 became G11, N1 became G21, E1 became G31, S1 became G41, SW1 became G51, and so on.

Validation

The consequence of the complexity outlined above is that for almost every rule concerning UK postcodes, an exception can be found. Automatic validation of postcodes on the basis of pattern feasibility is therefore almost impossible to design, and the system contains no self-validating feature such as a check digit. Completely accurate validation is only possible by attempting to deliver mail to the address, and verifying with the recipient.

Validation is usually performed against a copy of the » Postcode Address File » (PAF), which is generated by the Royal Mail and contains about 27 million UK commercial and residential addresses. However, even the PAF cannot be relied on as it contains errors, and because new postcodes are occasionally created and used before copies of the PAF can be distributed to users.

As can be seen, the first character is always alphabetical and the final three characters are always a numeric character followed by two alphabetic characters.

A regular expression to implement the BS 7666 rules in a basic fashion is provided in the BS7666 schema: [cite web |url=http://www.govtalk.gov.uk/gdsc/schemas/bs7666-v2-0.xsd |title=BS7666 XML schema |format=XSD]

A more complex regular expression is also given in the comments of the schema, which implements full checking of all the stated BS 7666 postcode format rules. That regular expression can be restated as a «traditional» regular expression:

(GIR 0AA| [A-PR-UWYZ] ( 6 <1,2>|( [A-HK-Y] 6 | [A-HK-Y] 2 ( 5 | [ABEHMNPRV-Y] ))| 3 [A-HJKS-UW] ) 8 [ABD-HJLNP-UW-Z] <2>)

The BS 7666 rules do not match British Forces Post Office postcodes, which have the format «BFPO NNN» or «BFPO c/o NNN», where NNN is 1 to 4 numerical digits.

Non-geographic postcodes

These codes include BS98, BS99, BT58, E98, NE98, NE99 and WC99.

There is an additional entirely non-geographic outward code «BX», from which postcodes can be allocated entirely independently of the geographic location of the recipient (and which can be retained in the event of the customer moving)

Within Royal Mail, outward codes beginning «XY» are used internally as routing codes to route mis-addressed mail, and to route international outbound mail.

Application

The PAF is commercially licenseable and is often incorporated in address management software packages. The capabilities of such packages allow an address to be constructed solely from the postcode and house number for most addresses. By including the map references of postcodes in the address database, the postcode can be used automatically to pinpoint a postcode area on a map. See http://www.streetmap.co.uk for an example of this in practice. The PAF is constantly updated with around 4,000 postcodes added each month and 2,000 existing postcodes terminated. [Ludi Simpson and An Yu, «Public access to conversion of data between geographies», Computers, Environment and Urban Systems, Volume 27, Issue 3, May 2003, Pages 283-307]

Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland was the last part of the UK to be postcoded with all postcodes beginning BT, between 1970 and 1974. While Belfast was already divided into postal districts, rural areas known as townland s posed an additional problem, as (at the time) many roads were not named, and houses were not numbered. Consequently, many people living in such areas shared the same postal address, which still occurs in the Republic of Ireland.Today the majority of roads in Northern Ireland are named (notable exceptions are in Fermanagh ) and most houses (even in rural areas) are allocated a number. Those that are not allocated numbers can be uniquely identified by a house name.

Crown dependencies

The Channel Islands ( Jersey and Guernsey ) and the Isle of Man established their own postal administrations separate from the UK in 1969, and did not adopt postcodes until the early 1990s. Their postcodes follow the UK format, with Jersey being postcode area JE, Guernsey GY, and Isle of Man IM.

British Forces Post Office (BFPO)

The British Forces Post Office (BFPO) is an agency that provides a postal service to HM Forces, separate from that provided by Royal Mail in the United Kingdom. BFPO addresses are used for the delivery of mail in the UK and around the world. BFPO codes such as BFPO 801 serve the same function as postal codes for civilian addresses.

Overseas territories

Some of the UK’s overseas territories have their own postcodes, which are used for all addresses in those territories:

Postcodes are not used in the Turks and Caicos Islands and the TKCA 1ZZ designation is generally unknown.

A Postal Code is a code assigned to a geographical area that makes sorting out of mails more convenient. Postal codes are basically a series of letters and numbers. They are referred with different names in various countries. The postal codes are usually assigned to geographical areas, but special codes also exist that are assigned to those institutions that receive mail in a bulk. In the U.S., the postal codes are known as ZIP (Zone Improvement Plan) Codes. ZIP codes have been used by the United States Postal Service (USPS) since 1963.

Though the main purpose of the introduction of the postal code is to speed up the delivery of mail, they also have other uses, such as they can be used with satellite navigation systems to navigate to an address. Pharmaceutical companies also allocate their representatives with geographical sales territories based on the workload index that is based on the postal code.

United Kingdom Postal Codes

The UK post codes refer to precise streets, and in some cases there may be several postcodes per street or road. They are formed of two parts, typically with a space between them. The first page would be the SE1 in the post code SE1 1AA. In this example SE1 refers an area of Southwark which contains localities such as Waterloo, London Bridge and Elephant & Castle. The letters refer to large areas that often correspond to cities, regions or in the case of London compass directions within the capital. In this case as this is a London postal code the SE stands for South East London. These areas are broken down into numbers. Very occasionally the numbers may have a further letter after them, for instance WC1A, where areas have been further sub-divided. The 1AA refers to the street within SE1, in this case part of Borough High Street. To send post to that address you’d need to write to the full address including full postcode, for instance:

John Smith,
1 Borough High Street,
London,
SE1 1AA,
United Kingdom

Postal code london. Смотреть фото Postal code london. Смотреть картинку Postal code london. Картинка про Postal code london. Postal code london

UK postcodes consist of two alphanumeric groups, separated by a space; for example “SO15 2GB”.

The first group is called the outward code: it describes a small town, a district of a large town, or a rural area, such that the outward code is sufficient (with a few exceptions) to determine the sorting office that will deliver the mail.

Typically the inward code covers one side of a short street, or a natural section of a longer one.

What is PIN Code or Zip Code and why they are used?

PIN CODE is abbreviation for Postal Index Number, Pincode is a 6 digits combination code used for identifying unique post office used by India Post for the delivery of mails and goods. It is very difficult to process the mails or parcels on the basis of address, basically Postal Codes are used to speed up the routing process the goods and mails to right direction.

What is classification of PIN Code?

First character of PINCODE represent the Region in India
Second Character of PINCODE represent the Sub Region in India
Third Character of PINCODE represent the sorting District of India
Last 3 Characters of PINCODE represent the Post Office of India

What is a ZIP Code and how does it work?

The ZIP Code full form is Zone Improvement Plan. A ZIP Code guides the destination post office or delivery area to which a letter or parcel will be sent for safe delivery of goods or mails. USPS delivery areas routes are directed by ZIP Codes in which goods are delivered.

ZIP Codes are basically 5-digit numbers developed by the United States Postal Service to identify and represent individual post offices across the United States. Most of the Countries has their own Postal systems developed in their country such as India, Czech Republic, Italy, Brazil, Germany, Switzerland etc. The United States Postal Service (USPS) has segmented the country into 10 ZIP Code areas. Starting in the northeast, they are numbered 0-9.

How USPS assigns Zip Code?

After the first number in a ZIP Code is assigned, the USPS assigns the next two numbers according to a city. the USPS will assign the first ZIP Codes of main town and cities. After that, the ZIP Codes will proceed alphabetically.

The first three digits of a ZIP Code together usually indicate the sectional center facility to which that ZIP Code belongs. The fourth and fifth digits of the ZIP Code represent the area of the city or town.

For example, if a letter is received with a ZIP Code of 94127, the USPS can know that it’s in California (9), it’s in San Francisco county (41), and in the area of the Westwood Highlands (27).

Map of the London postal district in 1857 (Photo credit: Wikipedia

Our current postcodes have their origins in the Victorian era

London was getting so big and there were quite a few common street names to confuse the unwary, so London was split up into 8 wedges each with a letter corresponding to a point of the compass and going out about 12 miles, so including places like Croydon, Kingston and Romford. What was then regarded as the central area was categorised East Central (EC) or West Central (WC).

Then these areas were getting too large and so numbers were added just around the time of the First World War, which explains if you see original street signs from before this period, they only have the letters and not the numbers. One place you do still find a lot of Edwardian street name plates is in Wandsworth, where they just say SW. At this point or possibly a bit earlier the London district was made a bit smaller to the broadly the area we have today.

Later when the Post Office created the Postcodes we know and love today, they built on the letters and numbers of the London system to form the base of the post code of today. In a few high density areas it was necessary to split the post code district. Initially this was only done in EC, WC, SW1, and W1 where the whole district was sub divided. More recently bits of E1 and N1 have been subdivided, so there is E1W, N1C and N1P but the rest of E1 and N1 are not subdivided. A very British way of resolving a problem!

The post code area bear no resemblance to any administrative boundaries and in fact there is one little bit of the London postal district which is outside the administrative area of Greater London – that is part of E4 which covers Stewardstone in Essex – part of Epping Forest district.

Postal codes used in the United Kingdom, British Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies are known as postcodes (originally, postal codes). [1] They are alphanumeric and were adopted nationally between 11 October 1959 and 1974, having been devised by the General Post Office (Royal Mail). [2] A full postcode is known as a «postcode unit» and designates an area with several addresses or a single major delivery point. [1]

The structure of a postcode is two alphanumeric codes that show, first, the Post Town and, second, a small group of addresses in that post town. The first alphanumeric code (the Outward code or Outcode) has between two and four characters and the second (the Inward Code or Incode) always has three characters. The Outcode indicates the postcode area and postcode district. This is followed by the Incode which indicates the postcode sector and delivery point (usually a group of around 15 addresses).

Each postcode area contains a number of post towns which are not themselves alphabetically denoted; however each will generally constitute one or more postcode districts. The central part of the town/city the postcode area is named after will have the number 1 e.g. B1 (Birmingham), LS1 (Leeds), M1 (Manchester). However, other post towns within the area are then either treated alphabetically—particularly in London, or geographically.

Postcodes have been adopted for a wide range of purposes in addition to aiding the sorting of mail: for calculating insurance premiums, designating destinations in route planning software and as the lowest level of aggregation in census enumeration. The boundaries of each postcode unit and within these the full address data of currently about 29 million addresses (delivery points) are stored, maintained and periodically updated in the Postcode Address File database. [1]

The initial system of named postal districts, developed in London and other large cities from 1857, evolved towards the present form: in 1917 London was split into broad numbered subdivisions, and this extended to the other cities in 1934.

Theoretically, deliveries can reach their destination using the house number (or name if the house has no number) and postcode alone; however, this is against Royal Mail guidelines, which request the use of a full address. [3]

History [ ]

Earlier postal districts [ ]

London [ ]

The London post town covers 40% of Greater London. On inception (in 1857/8), it was divided into ten postal districts: EC (East Central), WC (West Central), N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, and NW. The S and NE sectors were later abolished. In 1917, as a wartime measure to improve efficiency, each postal district was subdivided into sub-districts each identified by a number; the area served directly by the district head office was allocated the number 1; the other numbers were allocated alphabetically by delivery office, e.g. N2 East Finchley delivery office, N3 Finchley delivery office, N4 Finsbury Park delivery office etc. Since then these sub-districts have changed little.

Some older road signs in Hackney still show the North East (NE) sector/district.

Other large cities and towns [ ]

Following the successful introduction of postal districts in London, the system was extended to other large towns and cities. Liverpool was divided into Eastern, Northern, Southern and Western districts in 1864/65, and Manchester and Salford into eight numbered districts in 1867/68. [4]

In 1917, Dublin—then still part of the United Kingdom—was divided into numbered postal districts. These continue in use in a modified form by An Post, the postal service of the Republic of Ireland. In 1923, Glasgow was divided in a similar way to London, with numbered districts preceded by a letter denoting the compass point (C, W, NW, N, E, S, SW, SE). [4]

In January 1932 the Postmaster General approved the designation of some predominantly urban areas into numbered districts. [4] In November 1934 the Post Office announced the introduction of numbered districts (short postal codes) in «every provincial town in the United Kingdom large enough to justify it». Pamphlets were issued to each householder and business in ten areas notifying them of the number of the district in which their premises lay. The pamphlets included a map of the districts, and copies were made available at local head post offices. The public were «particularly invited» to include the district number in the address at the head of letters. [5]

A publicity campaign in the following year encouraged the use of the district numbers. The slogan for the campaign was «For speed and certainty always use a postal district number on your letters and notepaper». A poster was fixed to every pillar box in the affected areas bearing the number of the district and appealing for the public’s co-operation. Every post office in the numbered district was also to display this information. Printers of Christmas cards and stationery were requested to always include district numbers in addresses, and election agents for candidates in the upcoming general election were asked to ensure they correctly addressed the 100 million items of mail they were expected to post. Businesses were issued with a free booklet containing maps and listings of the correct district number for every street in the ten areas. [6]

The ten areas were: [6]

For example, Toxteth was Liverpool 8. A single numbering sequence was shared by Manchester and Salford: letters would be addressed to Manchester 1 or Salford 7 (lowest digits, respectively). Some Birmingham codes were sub-divided with a letter, such as Great Barr, Birmingham 22 or Birmingham 22a, [7] as can still be seen on many older street-name signs.

Modern postcode system [ ]

As a general rule, large post towns are numbered from the centre outward such that outlying parts have higher numbered districts. However, the disparate post towns within a postal area can be numbered based on various criteria. The town the postal area is named after excepted, this always being 1. In particular, the centrality of a postcode district within a postcode area cannot be reliably inferred from the postcode alone.

The Post Office experimented with electromechanical sorting machines in the late 1950s. [8] These devices presented an envelope to an operator, who would press a button indicating which bin to sort the letter into. Postcodes were suggested to increase the efficiency of this process by removing the need for the sorter to remember the correct sorting for as many places. [9] In January 1959 the Post Office analysed the results of a survey on public attitudes towards the use of postal codes, choosing a town in which to experiment with codes. The envisaged format was a six-character alphanumeric code with three letters designating the geographical area and three numbers to identify the individual address. [10] On 28 July Ernest Marples, the Postmaster General, announced that Norwich had been selected, and that each of the 150,000 private and business addresses would receive a code by October. Norwich had been selected as it already had eight automatic mail sorting machines in use. [11] The original Norwich format consisted of «NOR,» followed by a space, then a two-digit number (which, unlike the current format, could include a leading zero), and finally a single letter (instead of the two final letters in the current format). [12]

In October 1965, Tony Benn as Postmaster General [13] announced that postal coding was to be extended to the rest of the country in the next few years. [14]

On 1 May 1967 postcodes were introduced in Croydon. The many postcodes for central Croydon began with «CRO», while those of the surrounding post towns with CR2, CR3 and CR4. The uniform system of a set of three final characters after the space (such as 0AA, known as the inward code) was adopted. This was to be the beginning of a ten-year plan, costing an estimated £24 million. Within two years it was expected that full coding would be used in Aberdeen, Belfast, Brighton, Bristol, Bromley, Cardiff, Coventry, Manchester, Newcastle upon Tyne, Newport, Reading, Sheffield, Southampton and the Western district of London. [15] By 1967, codes had been introduced to Aberdeen, Southampton, Brighton and Derby. [16] In 1970, codes were introduced to the London Western and North Western postal districts. [17] In December 1970, much Christmas mail was postmarked with the message «Remember to use the Postal Code» although codes were used to sort mail in only a handful of sorting offices. [18]

During 1971, occupants of addresses began to receive notification of their postcode. Asked in the House of Commons about the completion of the coding exercise, the Minister of State for Posts and Telecommunications (whose role superseded that of Postmaster General in 1969), Sir John Eden, stated that it was expected to be completed during 1972. [19] The scheme was finalised in 1974 when Norwich was completely re-coded but the scheme tested in Croydon was sufficiently close to the final design for it to be retained, with CRO standardised as CR0 (district zero) thus removing the need to create a CR1 district. [4]

A quirk remained: the central Newport (Gwent) area was allocated NPT at a similar time to Croydon becoming CRO, and surrounding areas were (as today) allocated NP1–NP8. NPT lasted until the end of 1984 when it was recoded NP9. [20]

Girobank’s GIR 0AA was the last domestic postcode with a fully alphabetical outward code. That code no longer exists in the Royal Mail’s PAF system, but was taken over by the bank’s current owners, Santander UK. [21]

Adaptation of earlier systems into national system [ ]

When the national postcode system was introduced, many existing postal districts were incorporated into it, so that postcodes in Toxteth (Liverpool 8) start with L8. The districts in both Manchester and Salford gained M postcodes, so Salford 7 became M7 and so on (and similarly in Brighton and Hove, both using the prefix BN). The old coding lives on in a small number of street signs with (for example) «Salford 7» at the bottom. In other cases, the district numbers were replaced with unrelated numbers. In Glasgow many of its G-prefixed numbers are not used as C1 became G1, W1 became G11, N1 became G21, E1 became G31, S1 became G41, SW1 became G51, and so on. In London (as postally defined), 1917-created postal districts are mapped unchanged to those of today but its much enlarged administrative area, Greater London, was created in April 1965. From that month the remaining 60% of Greater London’s area has postcodes referring to 13 other post towns. Additionally, there were too few postcodes to adequately cover districts in central London (particularly in the WC and EC areas), so these were subdivided with a letter suffix rather than being split into new numbered districts so as to retain the familiar codes.

GB postcodes available as OpenData [ ]

Prior to 1 April 2010, the Royal Mail licensed use of the postcode database for a charge of about £4,000 per year. [22] Following a campaign and a government consultation in 2009, [23] the Ordnance Survey released Code-Point Open, detailing each current postcode in Great Britain together with a geo-code for re-use free of charge under an attribution-only licence (Open Government Licence as part of OS OpenData).

Postcodes linked to a variety of UK geographies [ ]

The Office for National Statistics (ONS Geography) maintains and publishes a series of freely available, downloadable postcode products that link all current and terminated UK postcodes to a range of administrative, health, statistical and other geographies using the Code-Point Open grid reference.

Formatting [ ]

Overview [ ]

The postcodes are alphanumeric, and are variable in length: ranging from six to eight characters (including a space). Each postcode is divided into two parts separated by a single space: the outward code and the inward code respectively. The outward code includes the postcode area and the postcode district, respectively. The inward code includes the postcode sector and the postcode unit respectively. Examples of postcodes are «SW1W 0NY», «PO16 7GZ», «GU16 7HF», and «L1 8JQ».

POSTCODE
Outward codeInward code
AreaDistrictSectorUnit
SW1W0NY

Outward code [ ]

The outward code is the part of the postcode before the single space in the middle. It is between two and four characters long. Examples of outward codes are «L1», «W1A», «RH1», «RH10» or «SE1P». A few outward codes are non-geographic, not divulging where mail is to be sent.

Postcode area [ ]

The postcode area is part of the outward code. The postcode area is either one or two characters long and is alphabetical. Examples of postcode areas are «L» for Liverpool, «RH» for Redhill and «EH» for Edinburgh. A postal area may cover a wide area, for example «RH» also covers parts of north Sussex and «BT» (Belfast) covers the whole of Northern Ireland.

Postcode district [ ]

The postcode district is one digit, two digits or a digit followed by a letter.

Inward code [ ]

The inward code is the part of the postcode after the single space in the middle. It is three characters long. The inward code assists in the delivery of post within a postal district. Examples of inward codes are «0NY», «7GZ», «7HF», or «8JQ». [24]

Postcode sector [ ]

The postcode sector is made up of a single digit (the first character of the inward code).

Postcode unit [ ]

The postcode unit is two characters added to the end of the postcode sector. A postcode unit generally represents a street, part of a street, a single address, a group of properties, a single property, a sub-section of the property, an individual organisation or (for instance Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) a subsection of the organisation. The level of discrimination is often based on the amount of mail received by the premises or business.

Validation [ ]

The format is as follows, where A signifies a letter and 9 a digit:

FormatCoverageExample
AA9A 9AAWC postcode area; EC1–EC4, NW1W, SE1P, SW1EC1A 1BB
A9A 9AAE1, N1, W1W1A 0AX

A99 9AAB33 8TH
AA9 9AAAll other postcodesCR2 6XH
AA99 9AADN55 1PT

A postcode can be validated against a table of all 1.7 million postcodes in Code-Point Open. The full delivery address including postcode can be validated against the Royal Mail Postcode Address File (PAF), which lists 29 million valid delivery addresses, [25] constituting most (but not all) addresses in the UK. [26]

The following regular expression can be used for the purpose of validation:

The following regular expression can be used for the purpose of validation and includes postcode formats from Special Cases:

Post towns [ ]

All or part of one or more postcode districts are grouped into post towns. [27] Larger post towns may use more than one postcode district, for example Crawley uses RH10 and RH11. In a minority of cases, a single number can cover two or three post towns—examples are the WN8 district including Wigan and Skelmersdale post towns, and the SY7 district including Craven Arms, Bucknell and Lydbury North post towns.

Special cases [ ]

Crown Dependencies [ ]

The Channel Islands and the Isle of Man established their own postal administrations separate from the UK in 1969. Despite this, they adopted the UK-format postcodes in 1993–94: Guernsey using GY, the Isle of Man using IM, and Jersey using JE. [28]

The independent jurisdiction of Sark was assigned a unique postcode prefix GY10 in 2011 to differentiate it from Alderney. The CEO of Guernsey Post, Boley Smillie, said «this has been a long time coming» and «. Sark should have had its own identity back then [when postcodes were adopted in 1993]». [29]

British Overseas Territories [ ]

Some of the British Overseas Territories have postcodes that follow the format of the UK postcode system:

PostcodeLocation
ASCN 1ZZ [30]Ascension Island
BBND 1ZZ [31]British Indian Ocean Territory
BIQQ 1ZZ [32]British Antarctic Territory
FIQQ 1ZZ [32]Falkland Islands
GX11 1AA [33]Gibraltar
PCRN 1ZZ [31]Pitcairn Islands
SIQQ 1ZZ [32]South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands
STHL 1ZZ [30]Saint Helena
TDCU 1ZZ [34]Tristan da Cunha
TKCA 1ZZ [35]Turks and Caicos Islands

These were introduced because mail was often sent to the wrong place, e.g., for Ascension Island to Asunción, Paraguay, and many online companies would not accept addresses without a postcode. [34] Mail from the UK continues to be treated as international, not inland, and sufficient postage must be used. [36]

Bermuda, the UK’s most populous remaining overseas territory, has developed its own postcode system, with unique postcodes for street and PO Box addresses, [37] as have the Cayman Islands, [38] Montserrat and the British Virgin Islands. [39] Montserrat recently introduced postal codes, [40] and a system has been under consideration in Gibraltar [41] with the code GX11 1AA being introduced as the generic postcode for the territory in the interim. [33] [42]

The British Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia in Cyprus use Cypriot postal codes for civilian use. The British military use BFPO addresses.

The separate postal code systems for those territories are shown below:

PostcodeLocation

KYn-nnnn (List)Cayman Islands
MSR-nnnn (List)Montserrat
VG-nnnn (List)British Virgin Islands

British Forces Post Office (BFPO) [ ]

The British Forces Post Office (BFPO) provides a postal service to HM Forces separate from that provided by Royal Mail in the United Kingdom, with BFPO addresses used for the delivery of mail in the UK and around the world. BFPO codes such as «BFPO 801» serve the same function as postal codes for civilian addresses, with the last line of the address consisting of «BFPO» followed a space and a number of 1 to 4 digits.

For consistency with the format of other UK addresses, in 2012 BFPO and Royal Mail jointly introduced an optional alternative postcode format for BFPO addresses, using the new non-geographic postcode area «BF» and the notional post town «BFPO». Each BFPO number is assigned to a postcode in the standard UK format, beginning «BF1». The database was released commercially in March 2012 as part of the Royal Mail Postal Address File (PAF). [44] [45] A postcode is not required if the traditional «BFPO nnnn» format is used.

Non-geographic codes [ ]

Most postcodes apply to a geographic area but some are used only for routing and cannot be used for navigation or estimating distances. [46] They are often used for direct marketing and PO boxes. Non-geographic postcode area BX is used solely for non-geographic addresses, with codes independent of the location of the recipient. Some postcode sectors or districts are set aside solely for non-geographic postcodes, including EC50, BS98, BT58, BX1–BX9, IM99, M60, N1P, NE99, SA99, SW9, WV99, WV98 and JE4. Also, the first two numbers can be from the range 91 to 95 for businesses and a range 96 to 99 for Government departments. Codes terminating with the letters HQ could indicate a non-geographical postcode for which Royal Mail holds the mail for redirection, bulk mail delivery, or an «open and scan to email» service. Girobank’s headquarters in Bootle used the non-geographic postcode GIR 0AA. There is also a special postcode for letters to Santa/Father Christmas, XM4 5HQ. [47]

Many non-geographic postcodes do not appear on Royal Mail’s own online postcode finder tool or their Click and Drop online postage printing tool, which can add to confusion when responding to organisations that use such addresses. Likewise, delivery services or couriers other than Royal Mail may not be able to deliver to such non-physical addresses.

Business Reply Service [ ]

Postcodes terminating with the letters «BR» are frequently used for Royal Mail’s Business Reply Service. On this service the Recipient pays the postage rather than the Sender. The Recipient may also pay a fee per item processed, and must purchase a licence to use the service. However, other letters may also be used after the «B». Royal Mail’s own examples use postcode «AB1 2BD». Also, the letters «BR» are not uniquely used for this purpose and there are many examples of the letters being used for street addresses, such as «S2 2BR» for Newfield Green Road, Sheffield.

Special postcodes [ ]

Postcodes are allocated by Royal Mail’s Address Management Unit and cannot be purchased or specified by the recipient. However, Royal Mail sometimes assigns semi-mnemonic postcodes to high-profile organisations. [48]

Operation [ ]

Sorting [ ]

Postcodes are used to sort letters to their destination either manually, where sorters use labelled frames, or increasingly with letter-coding systems, where machines assist in sorting. [60] A variation of automated sorting uses optical character recognition (OCR) to read printed postcodes, best suited to mail that uses a standard layout and addressing format. [61]

A long string of «faced» letters (i.e. turned to allow the address to be read) is presented to a keyboard operator at a coding desk, who types the postcodes onto the envelopes in coloured phosphor dots. The associated machine uses the outward codes in these dots to direct bundles of letters into the correct bags for specific delivery offices. With a machine knowledge of the specific addresses handled by each postal walk at each office, the bundles can be further sorted using the dots of the inward sorting code so that each delivery round receives only its own letters. [24] This feature depends upon whether it is cost effective to second-sort outward letters, and tends to be used only at main sorting offices where high volumes are handled. [62]

When postcodes are incomplete or missing, the operator reads the post town name and inserts a code sufficient for outward sorting to the post town, where others can further direct it. The mail bags of letter bundles are sent by road, air or train, and eventually by road to the delivery office. [62] At the delivery office the mail that is handled manually is inward sorted to the postal walk that will deliver it; it is then «set in», i.e. sorted into the walk order that allows the deliverer the most convenient progress in the round. [24] [62] The latter process is now being automated, as the roll-out of walk sequencing machines continues. [63] [64]

Integrated Mail Processors [ ]

Integrated Mail Processors (IMPs) read the postcode on the item and translate it into two phosphorus barcodes representing the inward and outward parts of the postcode, which the machines subsequently print and read to sort the mail to the correct outward postcode. Letters may also be sequentially sorted by a Compact Sequence Sorter (CSS) reading the outward postcode in the order that a walking postman/woman will deliver, door to door. On such items the top phosphorous barcode is the inward part of the code, the bottom is the outward. [ citation needed ]

IMPs can also read RM4SCC items, as used in Cleanmail, a different format to the above.

Mailsort and Walksort [ ]

A newer system of five-digit codes called Mailsort was designed for users who send «a minimum of 4,000 letter-sized items». [65] It encodes the outward part of the postcode in a way that is useful for mail routing, so that a particular range of Mailsort codes goes on a particular plane or lorry. Mailsort users are supplied with a database to allow them to convert from postcodes to Mailsort codes and receive a discount if they deliver mail to the post office split up by Mailsort code. Users providing outgoing mail sorted by postcode receive no such incentive since postcode areas and districts are assigned using permanent mnemonics and do not therefore assist with grouping items together into operationally significant blocks. Walksort [ clarification needed ] was discontinued in May 2012.

Listings and availability [ ]

There are approximately 1.7 million postcodes in the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. [66]

Each postcode is divided by a space into two parts. As mentioned above, the first part starts with the postcode area and ends with the postcode district. The second part begins with a single digit, which indicates the postcode sector, and ends with the postcode unit.

Postcode areas are also divided into several post towns, which predate the introduction of postcodes, with the London post town uniquely covering more than one postcode area.

As of June 2016, there are 124 postcode areas, 2,987 postcode districts, 11,192 postcode sectors, and 1,500 post towns. [66] Addresses receiving large volumes of mail are each assigned separate «large user» postcodes. But most postcodes are shared by several neighbouring properties, typically covering about 15 addresses.

Life-cycle of postcodes [ ]

There are also significant numbers of discontinued (terminated) codes. Each month some 2,750 postcodes are created and 2,500 terminated. [67]

Postcode Address File (PAF) [ ]

The Address Management Unit of Royal Mail maintains an official database of UK postal addresses and postcodes in its Postcode Address File (PAF), which is made available under licence for a fee regulated by Ofcom. The PAF is commercially licensable and is often incorporated in address management software packages. The capabilities of such packages allow most addresses to be constructed solely from the postcode and house number. By including the map references of postcodes in the address database, the postcode can be used to pinpoint a postcode area on a map. PAF is updated daily.

On its website, Royal Mail publishes summary information about major changes to postcode sectors and postal localities (including post towns). Individual postcodes or postal addresses can be found using Royal Mail’s Postcode and Address Finder website, but this is limited to 50 free searches per user per day.

Code-Point Open [ ]

A complete list of all current Great Britain postcodes, known as Code-Point Open, has been made available online (since 1 April 2010) by Ordnance Survey. Under the government’s OS OpenData initiative, it is available for re-use without charge under an attribution-only licence. The Code-Point Open list includes median coordinates for each postcode but excludes postcodes in Northern Ireland and the Crown Dependencies. Unlike the PAF products provided by Royal Mail, the Code-Point Open list does not include postal address text.

ONS Postcode Directory and National Statistics Postcode Lookup [ ]

The Office for National Statistics also produces postcode directories, under similar licence terms to the OS product. Both the ONSPD and NSPL contain Northern Ireland postcodes, with centroid coordinates in the OSI grid as opposed to the OSGB grid, although Northern Ireland postcodes are subject to a more restrictive licence permitting internal business use only. [71] Postcodes for the Crown Dependences are also included, without co-ordinates. A further difference is that non-current postcodes and dates of introduction and withdrawal of postcodes are included.

Other uses [ ]

While postcodes were introduced to expe the delivery of mail, they are useful tools for other purposes, particularly because codes are very fine-grained and identify just a few addresses. Among these uses are:

The phrase «postcode lottery» refers to the variation in the availability of services by region, though not always because of postcodes.

For these and related reasons, postcodes in some areas have become indicators of social status. Some residents have campaigned to change their postcode to associate themselves with a more desirable area, [73] to disassociate with a poorer area, [74] to reduce insurance premiums or to be associated with an area with a lower cost of living. [75] In all these cases Royal Mail has said that there is «virtually no hope» of changing the postcode, referring to their policy of changing postcodes only to match changes in their operations. [76]

Postcode areas rarely align with local government boundaries and a few straddle England’s borders with Wales and Scotland. This has led to British Sky Broadcasting subscribers receiving the wrong BBC and ITV regions, and newly licensed radio amateurs being given incorrect call signs.

History of the UK Postcode

Modern Origin

However, this wasn’t the first time that postcodes were used. In 1857 London introduced a system of subdivisions for postal purposes, which was refined in the next century in 1917 that also saw numerical subdivisions included. The system proved popular, and was extended to other cities in the UK in 1934. These early postcodes were incorporated into the UK’s postcode system when it was created in 1959.

When the postal system was found to be largely successful and well received, it was extended to other large UK towns and cities, including Manchester, Liverpool, Dublin, Glasgow. Other cities followed, and included Birmingham, Newcastle, Brighton, Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, Bristol, Edinburgh and Sheffield.

During the winter of 1932, the Postmaster General (a Cabinet-level ministerial position in Government) approved the introduction of postcode classifications for «every provincial town in the United Kingdom large enough to justify it», so all businesses and householders were sent notification of the introduction, letting them know what their postcode district was, and a campaign was started in 1933 to encourage people to use their postcode. Every postbox had a poster asking users to include their postcode on their mail.

Electromechanical Sorting Machines

In the 1950’s The Post Office started using electromechanical post sorting machines to help speed up the process of sorting mail. These machines processed letters, presenting an item of mail to a human operator, who would then sort the letter into the appropriate ‘bin’. The addition of postcodes sped up the process, and no longer meant that the operator had to remember the correct sorting for the mail.

During the late 50’s the Post Office conducted research into the attitudes of the general public with regards to using postcodes, and following a positive result they decided to extend postcodes to the remainder of the UK, which lasted at least another decade.

When it was expanded across the country, any existing postal districts were incorporated into the new system. For example, postcodes such as Liverpool 8 became L8, Glasgow C1 became G1 etc. In 1917 London districts were also incorporated into the system, and the remaining 60 percent of Greater London were given new allocated postcodes under the system.

Medieval History of the Royal Mail

Back in the 15th century letters addressed to the King and Queens of England were carried by couriers. The first mention of a Master of the Posts was in the King’s Book of Payments in February 1512, for which a payment of the grand sum of £100 was authorised to be paid to the Master of the Posts.

In 1609 it was laid down that mail could only be carried and delivered by persons authorised by the Postmaster General, and in 1635 the Royal Mail service was made available to the public, announced by Charles I, and operated by Thomas Witherings, an English merchant and politician. In the 1640’s the monopoly was given to Edmund Prideaux, parliamentarian and lawyer who eventually became attorney-general.

An act introduced in 1657 introduced a new system for Britain, which was entitled «Postage of England, Scotland, and Ireland Settled». The General Letter Office was established in 1660, later renamed the GPO (General Post Office), and a similar system in 1707 in Scotland.

The first Royal Mail coach ran in 1784, and operated between the cities of London and Bristol. At this time the Post Office Investigation Branch was introduced, and claims to be the oldest recognised criminals investigations authority in the world. The first Royal Mail train ran in 1830 on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway.

Stamps used as postage rates were first seen in 1839 after a reform of the uniform penny postage. Originally a single rate for delivery was in operation, but following the Uniform Fourpenny Post reform it was decided that postage had to be pre-paid by the sender, with the world’s first adhesive postage stamp introduced in 1840. At that time the Penny Black was first used on the 6th May, featuring a profile of Queen Victoria.

The Royal Mail is able to trace its history right back to medieval times. Following the 2010 general election, the government privatised 90% of Royal Mail, with 10 percent of the issued shares remaining the ownership of Royal Mail employees. After Adam Crozier left the position of chief executive, Canadian Moya Greene was appointed into the role, the first woman ever to have held the post (excuse the pun!).

Postal code london. Смотреть фото Postal code london. Смотреть картинку Postal code london. Картинка про Postal code london. Postal code london

La secte des cartes postales
