There’s a new method if you forgot, all what you gonna do to make a update is to make a new project get the project you made (the world hardest game editor) and overwrite it, now you got it non cancelled (I was thinking all of the time when I saw the first comment (edit: why do I always misspell)

I actually really like it! I don’t know how to play the game because it’s locked, but overall a good editor.

I also have a list of suggestions that I would like implemented

1. Select button. There would be a select button for people to choose whatever blocks/enemies/coins/etc. they what and are allowed to move them wherever they would like.

2. More enemy types. Since the only type is moving any direction, (according to the arrow on the dot) You can add stuff like a circular moving enemy. How it would work is that the person would click a spot which is the center of the circle and then the person would click another spot closer the center point dot, that would be the radius of the circle. The speed option would act the same. Another type is a linear moving enemy. How it would work is that the person would click where it would start. Then, the player would click another spot and that would be the enemies trail. They keep on making a trail until the square/rectangle is connected. Or, if the person doesn’t want to make a rectangle, the person could make a custom path for the enemy and can end the path by pressing ‘D’ on the keyboard.

3. Adding multiple start blocks. Right now, you can only add one and it’s styles, but sometimes the space for the start might be too big and we want it to be bigger. So, like the finish block, let us put multiple.

4. Keys that could control different doors. So in the editor, one key controls all doors, but it is possible to add a key and two doors, add a line from the key to one of the doors, and once played, that specific door would open.

That’s all I want to cover. I would like to see these ideas implemented to the editor, but if you can’t, that’s fine. You don’t have to do all of them, you can only do one or two if you like. Like I said, I really like the editor, nice work.

G ames used to be harder. That’s the lament veteran players now mutter whenever encountering some modern shoot-’em-up or action adventure. It sounds like the same sort of nostalgic elitism that music snobs indulge in, criticising current bands for lacking the legendary quality of yesterday’s heroes. But with games, it’s kind of true.

As the industry has grown, the big titles have moved towards toning down the difficulty, in order to give a smooth experience to as wide a range of players as possible. Nowadays, if you want a real challenge, you have to select “hard” mode, which usually just means more enemies and less ammo. But difficulty is at its best when it’s an intrinsic part of the design: players have to think about the game in another way – and earn their progress.

That is certainly true for the titles in this list. They’re not all classics, but even the plainly unfair ones have unforgettable qualities that made us persevere. That’s the thing with difficulty: it only really hurts when you want to see what’s next.

Demon’s Souls/Dark Souls (Fromsoft, 2009/2011)

When Fromsoft’s Hidetaka Miyazaki set out to rethink the action RPG genre, one of the new foundations was serious challenge. His thinking was: how can a player feel accomplishment without overcoming real odds? In these games, even the most basic enemies murder players again and again, so that the screen message “YOU DIED” is imprinted on the brain. The only consolation is that death is a staple part of how these worlds work. In other games, dying is failure, but here dying is how you learn, how you get better. In Souls, death is just part of the journey.

Ghosts ‘n Goblins (Capcom, 1985)

Capcom’s side-scrolling platformer used the ever-present threat of death to create a uniquely intense adventure. One hit reduces protagonist knight Arthur to his heart-patterned boxers, and the second kills. Unpredictable enemies spawn everywhere, power-ups can be traps, and most players never see past the first stage. Those that reach the end find out that they’ve either failed to bring the holy cross, which means replaying the last two levels, or that in bringing it they’ve fallen for “a trap devised by Satan”, and have to do the whole thing over again. On an even higher difficulty setting. Capcom, you rascal.

Ninja Gaiden II (Tecmo Koei, 2008)

Challenge was always part of the Ninja Gaiden series, but 2008’s Ninja Gaiden II hit a new peak of demanding insanity. These enemies rough-house the player on even “normal” difficulty but, once the setting is at Master Ninja, they attack relentlessly with brutal health-chewing grabs and projectiles. In later levels, foes have cannons for arms that are fire with unerring precision and regularity. It’s impossible to survive at times, nevermind kill anything. Naturally, the internet means someone has done the whole thing in four hours without being hit once.

God Hand’s commercial failure means many of the best ideas are yet to be stolen, one being the on-screen difficulty meter that responds to a player’s skill. There are four gradations, from level one to level DIE (the highest level), and if you’re getting smacked around it stays low. Once you get good at this (already tough) game however, it amps up how enemies attack, where they’ll attack from, how much damage they do, and increases the rewards for defeating them. Few games make the demands that God Hand does, and none tie difficulty and performance together with such elegance.

This is where the XCOM series began, a deep strategy game with an unforgiving attitude towards lax play. The designer, Julian Gollop, had made many great turn-based titles in 2D but XCOM’s isometric perspective and implementation of fog-of-war added a terrifying strategic dimension – so many soldiers lost to a dark corner you never checked. The aliens exploit mistakes, cut down your soldiers ruthlessly, and back at base force you into hard choices in the desperate scramble to keep humanity safe. If this is anything to go by, we’re screwed.

Fade to Black (Delphine Software, 1995)

Flashback’s sequel was an early attempt to bring a successful 2D design into 3D – and underestimated just how important precision controls are. Though a forward-thinking third-person design in some respects, Fade to Black was undone by many enemies that could kill in a single hit – one terrifying example being a tiny hard-to-target blob that flips towards the player character before dissolving all their flesh on contact. The lavish cutscenes created by the developer for each possible death make you wonder whether the tail was wagging the dog.

NARC (Williams Electronics, 1988)

Perhaps Eugene Jarvis is better represented by Robotron 2084, an impossible challenge and a much better game, but that low-fi sci-fi shooter lacks NARC’s crude impact. A two-player arcade game starring Max Force and Hit Man, out to take down Mr Big, NARC was one of the first games to truly glory in gibs and ultraviolence – the various junkies, punks and thugs explode into gory gobbets as the guns of justice blaze. Jarvis’s games are always difficult but, with NARC,they reached a whole new level of cruel theatre.

Smash T.V. (Williams Electronics, 1990)

Smash T.V. is an arcade classic and exemplifies a school of design that’s now largely dead: to make people desperate to see the next screen. The setup is perfect, a future gameshow where contestants move through rooms filled with death-dealing nasties and gain more prizes the longer they stay alive. Even the first room won’t hesitate to kill unwary players and, from then on, the gloves come off as Jarvis (again) and co-designer Mark Turmell squeeze as much colour, shrapnel, and explosive ordnance on-screen as possible. “Total carnage,” shouts the announcer. “IIIIIII love it!”

There could be any number of arcade beat-em-ups in this spot – TMNT, X-Men, even Final Fight – but in terms of efficiently guzzling coins through gorgeous presentation and artificial difficulty, it’s hard to top The Simpsons arcade game. The visuals, animations, enemies and scenarios are exceptional and clearly a labour of love (unlike the script) but the game beneath them is a brutal slugfest that especially enjoys stunlocking players – where one hit leads to many more.

Takeshi’s Challenge (Taito Corporation, 1986)

Originally planned as an 8bit version of his TV show Takeshi’s Castle, Japanese actor and director Takeshi Kitano instead got hands-on with Takeshi no Chōsenjō and created a game unlike any other – one whose packaging warned that “conventional gaming skills do not apply”. Loosely following a salaryman who dreams of finding treasure, Takeshi’s Challenge serves up a Game Over for innocuous “mistakes” like not quitting the character’s job, failing to divorce his wife, or not hitting the right people. You can get a Game Over on the password screen. Another challenge requires you leave the controller untouched for an hour. All games are arbitrary: only Takeshi’s Challenge glorifies in the fact.

Rogue (Michael Toy / Glenn Wichman, 1980)

So original it spawned a genre, Rogue is a procedurally generated dungeon crawler where the difficulty – in the sense of what it chooses to throw at you – is a huge part of the appeal. Not only will each fresh adventure bring new environmental challenges and fights, but potions and weapons are random too – meaning just taking a glug is dicing with death. Players have to be adaptive rather than memorising specific challenges, and eking out a long adventure when the odds are stacked against you becomes part of the fun.

Dwarf Fortress (Bay 12 Games, 2006)

The motto of this game’s community says it all: “losing is fun!” Dwarf Fortress is a game that has inspired whole prose epics on the travails of players’ ill-fated settlements, most of which start off meagre and then quickly fall prey to the thousands of things that can go wrong. Wolves, cave-ins, famine, cabin-fever, flooding, burrowing down to a demon god … Failure is inevitable, and not only do your dwarves go mad in adversity – they often create works of art to reflect what’s happened. There are plenty of tough games, but generating psychological scars for fictional characters suggests Dwarf Fortress is something special.

The Adventure of Little Ralph (New Corporation, 1999)

Doomed to curio status by a modest Japan-only release, The Adventure of Little Ralph plays like it was forged in the fires of arcade game design, but it is in fact exclusive to the original PlayStation and PSN. Scoring focused, hard as hell and shrouded in cult mystique, the traditional platformer today courts three-figure sums on the collector market, further denying it the broad audience it deserves. It’s “saving the damsel in distress” narrative may be hackneyed, but fiercely demanding boss fights that reinvent TAoLR as a beat-‘em-up serve to make it mechanically distinct, and cement its reputation as one of the most testing platformers yet developed.

The Bizarre Adventures of Woodruff and the Schnibble (Coktel Vision)

Difficulty in games is often a matter of testing the player’s ability to control with precision and react at speed. Coktel Vision’s narratively dark adventure game, however, is instead a test of semiotic nous. Its post-apocalyptic tale is told with an abundance of made up words, many of which pass without definition, while its knack for conversation without context make it thoroughly confusing. Even Clockwork Orange had a glossary. And if you’re tempted to use trial and error to crack its puzzles, be warned that the sheer number of inventory items and illogical quirks make it a protracted, painstaking process.

Mushihimesama (Cave, 2004)

If any game genre is most synonymous with difficulty, it is the arcade 2D shoot-‘em-up, known today as the shmup. And it is developer Cave that pushes devotees of the form like no other. Which Cave game is the hardest is highly subjective, but in terms of undiluted difficulty, the insect-themed Mushihimesama’s infamous Ultra mode might take it. There’s less of the mechanical intricacy that makes other releases by the studio perhaps as demanding, but through the sheer number of bullets that fill the screen, Mushi Ultra delivers an onslaught that is as bewildering to watch as it is demeaning to play.

Any arcade music game has the capacity for towering difficulty. Take on some high-BPM electronica on a demanding difficulty setting, and whether you’re pounding your feet on a Dance Dance Revolution machine or standing over the decks of an oddity like EZ2DJ, the challenge will be immense. Few compare, however, to the standard set by the Single modes of In The Groove, the debut of a short-lived series from Austin-based studio Roxor. Some of the tracks, when played on the game’s X setting, seem to want movement from the player’s body that is in no way catered for by human evolution.

If there’s a single moment that defines the experience of playing Super Meat Boy, it is quickly prodding the quick restart button. The platformer’s undersized stages brim with hazards, yet encourage you to play at furious speed. As a result, it’s a game of failing over and over again. However, by allowing for split-second restarts, there’s almost no drop in momentum as you ride the loop of trying and dying. As such, Super Meat Boy works its players into a frenzied trance state from which it can take hours to recover.

For a good while, this side-scrolling motorcycling game feels like a meditative experience – and then the difficulty curve suddenly shoots straight for the heavens. It is then that the game reveals its true form; a nightmarish physics puzzler dressed as a driving game. Just how do you get over that vertical wall? How many degrees of rotation are needed to land on that upside-down ramp? The answer is intimacy with every nuance of a bike’s suspension and weight; an intimacy a handful of players globally are reported to have mastered enough to have aced the game’s closing stages.

Battle Garegga (8ing/Raizing, 1996)

At a glance, Battle Garegga appears to sport a difficulty comparable to your usual 2D shooter: intensely tough, but nothing absurdly so. However, it is the way the game makes you play that pushes it into the “hardest ever” field. Battle Garegga has remarkably complex rank, that is, difficulty, that adapts to the way you play. Managing rank to keep the game playable means avoiding some power ups and bonuses, and even “suiciding”, where lives are lost on purpose. Playing properly means playing on the edge, life stocks low and weapon power reserved, and it’s acutely exciting. The current world-record holder Kamui has held and bettered her leaderboard position through an estimated 18 years of devoted play, demonstrating the commitment Garegga demands.

Rick Dangerous (Core Design, 1989)

Core’s homage to Indiana Jones is a platformer played a few pixels at a time, edging forward to see what will kill you next. There are spikes, pits and boulders at every turn, and learning by failing is almost the only way to proceed. Your inventory is severely limited too, and there’s some tremendously demanding precision needed in a handful of particularly cruel and frustrating sections. Years later, Core would go on to craft another tomb raiding game, by which time the studio had apparently learned how to treat its fans a little more fairly.

Shadow of the Beast II (Psygnosis, 1990)

Mention the first Shadow of the Beast to the right crowd, and you’ll likely hear nostalgic musings on how its pioneering use of the parallax scrolling technique pushed game visuals into a new era. Ask about it’s sequel, and the response may be a little less rosy. The melee-focussed, multi-directional platform game would have been straight up demanding if it gave you any guidance. But it doesn’t, leaving you to work out everything for yourself. In a time before Youtube and walkthroughs, that alone was enough to make Shadow of the Beast II one of the toughest of its day.

Time Crisis (Namco, 1995)

Listing a familiar lightgun game might seem out of place on a list like this. After all, anybody who’s visited a dilapidated seaside arcade has likely thrown a handful of coins into the slot of Namco’s cop blaster, and felt nothing but delight. But try and complete the first Time Crisis properly – clearing it in a single credit – and it’s difficulty begins to become manifest. The lack of a hit indicator leaves a gaping hole in your ability to respond appropriately, and some punishingly curt timed sections serve to make it particularly easy to fast track to the game over screen.

I Wanna Be the Guy: The Movie: The Game (Michael O’Reilly, 2007)

Those who played this freeware platforming treasure that never officially left beta will likely find it hard to forget. Boiling its genre down to its founding elements, I Wanna Be The Guy was developed as a response to a then unfinished, brutally demanding Japanese flash game named Jinsei Owata. O’Reilly was convinced he could push Jinsei Owata’s difficulty a little further, and it appears he succeed. As a result, his game has become a reference point for the most testing indie titles. Super Meat Boy featured IWBTG’s protagonist, The Kid, who also starred as the final boss of the conclusive build of Jinsei Owata.

Weaponlord (Visual Concepts, 1995)

The greatest sin of this straight-to-console beat-‘em-up was that it tried to do things differently. It approached the control conventions of arcade fighters from the left field, using a range of weird button combos and d-pad swipes, but the result was a complex system too demanding for most ordinary players and utterly counterintuitive to committed beat-‘em-up competitors. The computer-controlled characters were also rather too good at their own game, and Weaponlord was ultimately consigned to its fate as a curio most renowned for being the first fighter designed with online play in mind. If you are tempted, the MegaDrive port is a little more forgiving than its SNES cousin.

Flywrench (Messhoff, 2015)

While Nidhogg is Messhoff’s most famous game, Flywrench must be its hardest. The set-up is deceptively simple; guide an abstract spaceship through minimal mazes that look altogether innocent, changing colour as you pass. The reality is very different, where constantly dying and restarting is the standard. Flywrench is perhaps the most difficult game of the past year, or the past nine years, if you were one of the few who played the 2007 original, which saw an understated online release and inspired Braid creator Jonathan Blow to craft a playfully easy version named Nicewrench.

Here’s my problems with the game.

1. The controls are horrible.
The controls are so dull you can barely touch the joystick and it doesn’t move also there’s no option to fix this.(Controller Sensitivity etc) Also it’s not like the original where it’s arrow keys instead of a useless broken joystick.

3. The Difficultly
Finally the focal point of this game, the difficulty.
What I mean by that is the fake difficulty. Try playing a cheap “hard” game where you can barely move with the garbage controls, the ads popping up every couple of seconds, and the fact it says it hard but it’s just cheap. Oh and not to mention the lag between your actions on screen and moving the joystick.

So that’s my problems with this game don’t download this crap. If you want to play this game just play it on a computer for free with good controls, no ads, fair difficulty (No input lag or garbage controls) and lastly is a fun experience.

the game was just really fun and I enjoyed it a lot I was expecting it to not be good because of other reviews I read but it was a really good game in my opinion I know some games where every like 30 seconds is and ad and it’s SUPER annoying but this game I didn’t think the ads were really that bad at all and it made it challenging because you move slow but I’m pretty sure that was the point any way anyone who reads this should download the game in my opinion because I mean all of the reasons I already listed and if for some reason you don’t like it you can just delete it I mean it is a free game so just try it and if you don’t like it delete but in my opinion you should DEFINITELY get this game it was AWESOME.

Worse than trash

Don’t even get me started, the controls are terrible. The joystick is over sensitive and takes up half the screen, making level one the worlds hardest game on its own. Did I mention the ads. This game doesn’t give a crap about you completing a level, if they can flash you the same Facebook ad every ten seconds they will, even if it means doing so in the middle of a level. The graphics are bad as well, I had no idea you could make a game consisting of only blocks and balls look so bad. I know this app is free but I wouldn’t recommend downloading it if you got paid to get it. Maybe someday you guys could think about taking this app off the AppStore.

30. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES) (1989)

The ‘80s were a great time for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and their fans – and Konami helped close the decade with a bang by releasing the amazing arcade TMNT game.

This is not that game.

Along with the arcade release, Konami brought the action to the living room with a side-scrolling action platformer for the NES.

While not quite as fun and visually striking as the arcade beat-em-up, the game had excellent graphics and solid sound design.

It also had some high difficulty levels.

The fluid gameplay and great controls meant these were fun challenges to overcome rather than a chore.

29. FTL (2012)

Most games in this list challenge your motor skills and reflexes.

But if you’re interested in something that’ll put your brain creases to good use, FTL should be at the top of your list.

You’ll have to manage your crew and lead them in battle against pursuing rebels who’ll lay traps for you at the end of every FTL jump.

These events are randomly generated, so you never know what to expect.

28. Monster Hunter Freedom (2006)

Monster Hunter Freedom on the PSP is a remastered compilation of the first two games in the series.

And one of the hardest games in the franchise.

The hunts in MHF are brutal.

But there’s a secondary reason for the high difficulty: the controls.

The PSP’s lack of a second thumbstick throws everything you know about MH out the window, and it can be tough to get used to.

The G-Rank missions are also a major challenge, as they pit you against more deadly versions of some of the hardest monsters.

When it comes to racing games, you can’t get more ruthless than F-Zero GX on the GameCube.

This high-tech hovercraft racing game feels like doing 60mph in a suburban area and trying to dodge every tree, dog, old lady, and lemonade stand on your way.

It’s engaging and looks beautiful.

But take your eyes off the road for a second, and you’re done for.

The only way to get better at this game is through trial and error, and memorizing the hazards on every map so you can avoid most of them.

26. Spelunky (2008)

Don’t be deceived by Spelunky’s funny name and adorable art style.

This game is as ruthless as it is addictive. And it is very addictive.

Each step you take in these underground passages could spell your death if you’re not careful.

There are traps everywhere, enemies are vicious, and sometimes there’s just too much going on at once.

Spelunky was a significant contributor to the popularization of roguelike titles during the 2010s, and it’s one everyone should try at least once. It’s hard, but not impossible.

25. Takeshi’s Challenge (1986) (JP)

If you’ve seen the classic game show “Takeshi’s Castle”, you’re familiar with comedian Takeshi Kitano – also known as Beat Takeshi.

This Japanese TV personality has been involved in countless projects throughout the years.

One of them is Takeshi’s Challenge – a side-scrolling game where you play as a disgruntled Japanese salaryman trying to escape his corporate lifestyle by finding a treasure in the South Seas.

Trying to survive attacks from the Yakuza and other unexpected threats will not prove easy. If you think you’ve got what it takes, you won’t regret taking up Takeshi’s Challenge.

24. Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! (1987)

Known as “the baddest man on the planet”, heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson was the undisputed world champion for thirteen years straight – and he wasn’t about to star in a game where it was easy to beat him.

Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! puts you in the shoes of Little Mac, a lightweight boxer who’s always punching up.

Due to his size, he’s always at a disadvantage.

But if you look closely and learn your opponent’s tells, you can use your superior speed to avoid damage.

The most brutal fight in the game is, of course, Tyson himself.

He’s nigh-impossible to beat if you’re not an expert at the game.

But if you made it that far, you probably are.

23. Mega Man & Bass (2003)

The Mega Man series was never known for being easy.

But his collaboration with Bass on the GBA is especially challenging even for the blue trooper’s standards.

Whereas previous bosses in the series usually follow set patterns you can quickly memorize in a couple of tries, this game requires you to have the reflexes to dodge unexpected moves.

The game was initially released on the Super Famicom as Rockman & Forte, which many people imported back in the day.

By the time the GBA port came out, people already knew it as the hardest game on the franchise.

22. XCOM 2 (2016)

Firaxis’ original XCOM: Enemy Unknown left some big shoes for its sequel to fill – and the developers didn’t disappoint.

The sequel doubled down on the original’s high expectations of the player. The primary campaign is challenging from beginning to end.

Some missions require you to play perfectly and get extremely lucky, or lose half of your warriors in one fell swoop.

21. I Wanna Be The Boshy (2010)

I Wanna Be The Guy was an iconic title back when I was just a kid.

My friends and I would take turns trying to clear it on an old laptop, laughing about the absurd difficulty and insane amount of spikes on floors, walls, little squares in the air, and so on.

I Wanna Be The Boshy is one of the best fan games inspired by the legendary IWBTG, aimed at shutting up those people who boast about finding the latter easy.

The great difficulty has made it a popular game to speedrun, with the record sitting at 30m31s at the time of writing.

20. Bloodborne (2015)

This might be a controversial opinion, but I think Bloodborne is easier than Dark Souls by a long shot.

While Bloodborne’s fights require faster reflexes and reward staying very close to your prey, the player character is also agile and very skilled with weapons.

You can get by with your reflexes without needing to learn such specific tells and patterns until you’re well into the game.

Well, except for Father Gascoigne.

You’re going to die a lot against Father Gascoigne.

19. Ikaruga (2003)

A spiritual sequel to Treasure’s Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga is one of those games you can instantly tell was designed to empty your pockets at the local arcade.

It’s one of the most famous old-school shooters around, and its great difficulty is among the main reasons. The sheer amount of enemy projectiles on screen at any given time is telling of the kind of bullet hell this is.

Its fantastic graphics and sound design also contributed a lot to its popularity.

There may be countless bullets on screen, but their patterns are gorgeous. Be careful not to get distracted!

18. Battletoads (1991)

You can find references to Battletoads all over the Internet, thanks to creators all around the world who were most likely traumatized by the game’s ruthless difficulty.

The first couple of stages might trick you into believing you’ll be fine.

But this game’s difficulty curve is steep.

Try to keep going at least until you race through the Turbo Tunnel. If you didn’t destroy your controller by then, maybe you’ll clear the game.

Many people complain about being born too late, but I’m comfortable having been born three years after this game came out.

If I had to contend with this level of difficulty as a kid, I might have given up on gaming altogether.

17. Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (1986)

Only months after Super Mario Bros. was released worldwide for NES, the Japanese already had their hands on the sequel – and it was pretty different from the game we in the West call “Super Mario Bros. 2”.

The original sequel was more like an expansion, playing almost exactly like its predecessor, but featuring much more challenging levels meant to keep SMB veterans busy for a long time.

And Nintendo deemed their Western audiences incapable of enjoying such a hard game at the time.

But we finally got a look at this brutal experience when “The Lost Levels” were included in the 1993 SNES compilation Super Mario All-Stars.

And yes, it’s pretty darn tough.

16. Mushihimesama (2011)

I’m a die-hard fan of Touhou Project bullet hell games, but even I have to admit Mushihimesama is a lot harder thanks to the unpredictable patterns.

Whereas you can memorize the patterns for almost every boss in Touhou, Mushihimesama will force you to think on the fly and put your reflexes to the test.

It’s a very visually appealing game. And while the music isn’t half as good as Touhou’s, this is the game to conquer for street cred if you’re a fan of the bullet hell genre.

15. Demon’s Souls (2009)

Demon’s Souls stands just barely below Dark Souls in difficulty because some of the game’s “technical” limitations make it way too easy to “cheese” most bosses.

I mean, you can exploit monsters in Dark Souls – but in Demon’s Souls, sometimes it feels like the only option.

These bosses are hard if you’re not an expert Souls player.

Exploring the fallen kingdom of Boletaria and discovering the secrets of the Nexus is a timeless experience that already has everything that made Dark Souls so popular.

It’s challenging, you have a massive degree of control over your build, and the characters are incredibly memorable.

Make sure to check out the remake on the PS5 if you can.

14. Dark Souls (2011)

Dark Souls is what most modern human beings will think of when someone mentions “hard video games”.

As fans of FromSoftware’s Souls franchise love to say – this action RPG is hard but fair, which is part of what sets this game apart from many older titles.

You’ll have to learn the mechanics, understand your invincibility frames while rolling, and probably look up some info on builds – but if you put in the hours, you’ll clear this game and feel immensely rewarded. You might even become a Souls fan.

And the 2018 remastered version is definitely worth a look.

13. Ninja Gaiden II (2008)

All games in the Ninja Gaiden franchise are pretty grueling.

But some are more difficult than others.

Ninja Gaiden II is the sequel to the remake released in 2004. What’s unusual about this revived series is that it’s harder than the original NES game rather than easier like most remakes tend to be.

You’re going to be repeating every level a fair amount of times until you manage to clear the game.

Luckily it’s a gorgeous-looking title, and the fast-paced combat is very absorbing.

12. Nioh (2017)

The people behind Ninja Gaiden also bring us Nioh – a Dark Souls-inspired action RPG set in a dark fantasy version of Japan’s Warring States period.

In other words, it’s Sekiro before Sekiro was a thing.

Team Ninja put their expertise making punishing action games to good use, crafting hard-as-nails boss fights and a treacherous world to explore.

You’ll see this Irish samurai die a lot at the hands of soldiers and yokai.

Its sequel, also on the PS4, is another challenging game you should check out if you liked this one.

11. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (2019)

I expected Sekiro to be much closer to a regular single-player adventure than the Souls series.

And therefore, I expected it to be easier.

FromSoftware took inspiration from Tenchu and the Ninja Gaiden series. Both star shinobi like Sekiro, and both are remarkably hard.

Whereas Souls games (Bloodborne included) generally take you by surprise with weird enemy placement and setting up traps, Sekiro’s foes are just brutal.

You’ll have to become a parry master early on in the game if you have any chance of progressing.

10. The Witness (2016)

Most games on this list are challenging because staying alive in their digital worlds is a 24/7 fight for survival.

On the other hand, The Witness doesn’t even have a game over screen.

This fantastic puzzler has you making your way around a beautiful and mysterious island full of puzzles you can tackle in any order you want.

The thing is, some of these puzzles are designed in a way that almost guarantees getting stumped and having to look up a solution online.

Clearing this game without help from the Internet is a big-brain endeavor.

I’d say the best way to enjoy it is with a friend or SO who’ll think, laugh, and cry with you throughout the experience.

9. Celeste (2018)

Celeste’s main campaign is challenging, but manageable for anyone who’s even a bit experienced with platformers.

Then there’s the optional content.

On the one hand, you have the B-Sides – harder versions of each level unlocked by finding a cassette while playing through the normal map.

If you manage to clear every one of those (easier said than done), the C-Sides will become available.

At least Lena Raine’s music is just as good in any of these levels, so you can jam to some MIDI-inspired beats while you lose all confidence in your gaming skills.

8. X-COM: UFO Defense (1994)

Most people know X-COM from the 2012 reboot of the series.

But the original – released in PAL regions as UFO: Enemy Unknown – was already a fantastic and challenging game.

The X-COM series is known for its unforgiving AI, and this game was no exception.

These aliens are tough and surprisingly good at creeping up on you.

Managing, building, and expanding X-COM is also a challenging but rewarding aspect of gameplay.

7. Cuphead (2017)

One of the best games in recent memory to be deemed “as hard as Dark Souls” by the internet at large is Cuphead, an unforgiving run-and-gun featuring some seriously challenging bosses.

Cuphead lures you into a sense of security with the first couple of bosses.

Sure, you died 15 times each. But you finally beat them in the end. How much harder could the rest be?

As it turns out, the answer is “a lot harder”.

Still, as long as you’re willing to put in the time to memorize your foes’ patterns and learn some breathing exercises to stay calm, Cuphead is a tamable beast.

6. Contra (1987)

If there has ever been a time where we needed the Konami code, it was at the beginning of Contra.

Even with the 30 extra lives, clearing Contra is a work of patience and honest effort.

Running and shooting are easy enough. But keeping track of every single enemy and projectile flying your way is exhausting.

If you had someone to play this with, that generally meant forming a deep soldier’s bond that would last for life.

5. Ghosts’ n Goblins (1985)

Ghosts’ n Goblins is the game everyone likes to bring up when remembering how hard games used to be, compared to today’s less nerve-wracking adventures.

This addictive platformer/run-and-gun requires precision and lots of trial and error to clear.

One of the biggest challenges is that you’ll be sent back to the beginning of the level after being hit only twice.

And these levels aren’t precisely short.

If you’re a skilled gamer, you might get to the final boss (Astaroth) and defeat him – but it was all an illusion (devised by Satan).

If you want to rescue the Princess and bring peace to the realm, you’ll have to go through the entire game again – but harder.

4. Super Meat Boy (2010)

Super Meat Boy is the kind of game that’ll make you physically distressed from its difficulty.

The frustration will seep into your bones as you cry out in anguish, and you may be tempted to hurl your controller at the nearest wall.

This fantastic platformer brings the insane difficulty of I Wanna Be The Guy-like games, and a much bigger budget with a real development team.

You’ll need extreme precision – and patience – if you want to rescue your girlfriend from Dr. Fetus.

On the flip side, there’s nothing quite as rewarding as finally clearing a level and watching the replay of every previous attempt at the same time, savoring the moment when that last little Meat Boy steps ahead of the pack and makes it to the finish line.

It’s just sublime.

3. Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero? (2009)

Prinny and Prinny 2 on the PSP are easily the most frustrating, deceptively hard games I’ve ever played.

In the world of Disgaea, the souls of criminals are reborn into penguin-like bodies to serve as slaves in the Netherworld as they pay for their sins.

They’re called Prinnies, and their lives are pretty hard – as shown by these two gems on Sony’s fantastic portable console.

While the levels themselves are manageable, boss fights in Prinny are just plain unfair – especially in the sequel, which is why you get a whopping 1000 lives at the beginning of the game.

Believe me when I tell you, 1000 lives might not be enough.

2. Dwarf Fortress (2006)

With the ridiculous official name of Slaves to Armok: God of Blood Chapter II: Dwarf Fortress, this dungeon-building simulator is easily the most challenging construction game in existence.

You’ll have to create a wealthy and – most importantly – defensible fortress for your dwarven folk.

The remarkably basic visual cues and interface can be a bit frustrating and make the learning process slower, but that’s part of the appeal.

It’s the kind of game for people who’ve become addicted to stress in their daily lives, and need their gaming to really challenge them, lest they slip back into their workaholic tendencies.

1. Super Mario Maker 2 (2019)

Super Mario games have always been pretty challenging – especially “The Lost Levels” mentioned earlier.

With that said, SMM2 takes it to the next level thanks to its active userbase.

It’s basically a bunch of players that use the game’s powerful level-building tools to create the most grueling and absurd Mario levels ever conceived.

Nintendo was pretty smart about it too.

They saw the incredible support of fan-made games, and especially all the super-hard “kaizo” hacks we were getting.

So they jumped right into the action with their own title.

The best part about SMM2 is that people are still making new levels. And they probably will be until the next Super Mario Maker comes out.

It’s gotta be the most bang for your buck, for sure.

Dictionary

Dictionary is a free offline English dictionary containing over 200,000 words and definitions and no ads. Dictionary is ideal for both native English speakers and English learners or people studying the English language. The dictionary definitions are stored locally, and because it’s ad-free there’s no need for a network connection. The home page contains a randomly selected word cloud which will pique your curiosity and help you improve your vocabulary, while the search box allows you to find specific words easily. As you type, Dictionary homes in on the word you are looking for. Then you can follow the links in the definition page to get more word definitions.

Wildcard characters can be used to help with word games like crosswords and scrabble where only some of the letters are known, or you have to find an anagram, or with spelling. Definitions include synonyms and antonyms which allows the dictionary to also serve as a thesaurus. The speech function helps provide the correct pronunciation.

You can see your word history and revisit definitions, or make your own list of favourite words to help build up your vocabulary. It also works well if you only have an intermittent network connection because the definitions are stored offline, locally on the device. And we managed to keep data offline without needing a massive app download. There is also a «word of the day» with our pick of the most interesting and entertaining words in the English language. Dictionary works on tablets and phones and is refreshingly free from annoying ads and paid upgrades.

In each puzzle a path appears when you connect the stars of the same color. The paths must not be crossed, except if you use a bridge. With two stars (level 1) the game is easy. But, it becomes harder when the number of stars increases. The game becomes really challenging when the levels include more than 20 stars in 6 different colors.
