Thor returns to Asgard, where Heimdall tells him he sent Lady Sif to Jotunheim to retrieve the Bloodaxe. However, Heimdall sees that she had been captured by the Jotuns, and he sends Thor to Jotunheim to save her. In Jotunheim, Thor fights through combined forces of the Ice Giants and Dark Elves until he finds Sif. The two Asgardians learn that the Dark Elves do not plan to use the Uru weapons as intended but as part of a ritual. They successfully take the Bloodaxe back from the Dark Elves after they defeat the monster guarding it, the giant Ymir, and head back to Asgard with the weapon in tow.
Heimdall sends Thor to Vanaheim to recover the Sword of Torunn. When he arrives, he quickly runs into his old friend Hogun, who was already in the realm to protect the local Vanir from Marauder attacks. Although Hogun is puzzled by the nature of the attacks, Thor believes they are connected to the Dark Elves’ plot. The two force the Dark Elves out of hiding once they defeat Duhg, forcing Thor and Hogun to fight through the Elves and their remaining Marauder allies. After defeating a Kronan allied with the Marauders, the Asgardians are able to recover the Sword.
Strangely, Odin asks Thor to not seek out the Dark Elves and hand over Mjølnir. Thor has no option but to comply with his father’s demands, but remains suspicious of his motives. Believing Odin to have somehow come under Malekith’s spell, Thor seeks advice from Loki on what has happened. His former brother confirms Thor’s fears that Odin is being controlled by the Dark Elves, so he frees Loki to help him take on their father. In return, Thor promises Loki that he will become king of Asgard. After fighting through waves of Einherjar, Thor and Loki defeat Odin and free him from Malekith’s power, but it is too late. Odin has already sent the Bloodaxe and the Sword of Torunn to Svartalfheim.
Heimdall sends Thor and Loki to Svartalfheim in a desperate measure to stop Malekith from completing the ritual. However, when they arrive in the Dark Elves’ home, Loki reveals he had been working with Malekith all along, and will be made king of Asgard after the Dark Elves destroy the rest of the universe. Thor fights his treacherous brother, giving Malekith enough time to almost complete the ritual. Once Loki is defeated, Malekith reveals that he planned to destroy Asgard with the other realms all along. Reunited by a common goal, Loki and Thor finish off Algrim, and Loki heads back to Asgard. As Thor fights through the rest of Malekith’s forces, Loki convinces Odin to use his power to prevent Malekith from completing the ritual. The ritual fails, contorting Malekith’s body into monstrous shapes. The deformed Malekith makes his last stand, and Thor puts an end to the mad Elf’s plans once and for all.

Thor 2 is a huge improvement over Thor 1. Everything about this movie excelled my expectations, The action is truly epic, its a lot more brutal and darker. the Villain was done properly!! finally Marvel!! Malekeith is brutal, heartless, and a force to be reckon with, his personal bodyguard gave Thor some much needed challenge. Loki is brilliant as always, the movie rarely slows down and the action has a great pace, it has some cheesy moments with awkward humor, but does not distract from the overall experience. Thor uses all his powers and the effects are superb. DO NOT MISS THE BEGINNING CREDITS AND THE POST CREDITS SCENES.

Part I
The realms sense a change due to the destruction of the Bifrost by Thor: Asgard is cut off from the other realms. Jotunheim is still damaged, Nidavellir fears the dwarven forges will be overtaken without Asgard’s protection, and the Badoon and Marauders mobilize to attack others, including Vanaheim. This concerns Thor, who also notes that Hogun comes from that realm.
Heimdall notes that the destruction of the Bifrost «continues to shift the balance of power across the nine realms. and into the worlds beyond Yggdrasil.»
Thor realized that by saving Jotunheim, he has weakened the other realms. Odin indicates this has brought the universe closer to Ragnarök. A guard tells Odin that Tyr has requested to speak with him.
Meanwhile, Jane Foster continues to search for Thor and Asgard from New Mexico. Erik Selvig appears affected by Loki’s influence. Foster attempts to open the Bifrost, but she is unsuccessful, presumably because Thor broke it. She feels that something has happened to Thor, and worries; she says she won’t give up.
One year later, Frigga finds Loki in a vision. She speaks to him, then informs Odin and the others that Loki is alive and that he is planning something involving the Tesseract.
Loki appears on Earth at the Joint Dark Energy Mission Facility; Nick Fury, Hawkeye, and Erik Selvig are present. Heimdall is aware and informs Thor and Odin.
Jane Foster is working at her lab at Smith Motors in New Mexico with her assistant Darcy Lewis. She receives a call from S.H.I.E.L.D.; Agent Phil Coulson is prompting an agent, who asks Foster to consult in Tromsø, Norway. Foster hesitates, but Lewis reminds her that it’s been a long time since Thor’s departure.
Back on Asgard, Odin tells Thor that he can send him to Midgard. However, there are consequences to both Odin and Thor. Thor is ready to leave, and worries over Odin’s health. As Iron Man and Captain America confront Loki in Stuttgart, Germany, Thor travels to Earth via Odin’s dark energy. The travel appears to be physically demanding and unlike Bifrost travel. He is then seen in pain and on his back, fallen on Earth with Mjølnir beside him. Storms rage in the background.
Part II
Odin survived the use of dark energy and is now under the care of Eir. Thor is also able to recover from the use of dark energy and the fall. He immediately goes after Loki and becomes allies with the Avengers in the process.
Some time later, the Avengers are defending the Earth by fighting the invading Chitauri forces. Meanwhile, Jane Foster wants to leave the research station in Tromsø, as nobody is able to explain why she is there. But then Darcy Lewis shows her live video footage of the Battle of New York.
Back to New York, Iron Man is talking to Thor about TV shows, while flying next to each other; then Thor suddenly gets eaten by a Leviathan. Using lightning, Thor manages to defeat the creature from within and the Leviathan crashes down.
The next day, Thor takes Loki back to Asgard with the Tesseract. Loki is shortly reunited with Frigga, until Odin wants to speak alone with Loki. Odin claims that Loki is no longer a son to him and that Frigga is the only reason that he still lives. He sends Loki to the dungeons for the rest of his lifetime, calling him Loki Laufeyson.
Foster and Lewis are back in New York and meet with Selvig in the hospital. Although Selvig has trouble finding words, Foster is able to understand that Thor has left Earth again.
On Asgard, Heimdall tells Thor that the planet Vanaheim is under attack by the Marauders. Other planets are in chaos as well, but by using the Tesseract, the Asgardians are able to restore the Bifrost. Under leadership of Thor, Asgard starts to return order to the Nine Realms, holding back the ever growing tide of Ragnarök.
Disappointed that Thor did not leave a message when he was in New York, Foster stops looking for Thor and her search to open a bridge to other dimensions.
User Reviews
The film overall has it’s fair share of holy s**t moments that defy all levels of credibility, even for a comic book/sci-fi/fantasy movie. That whole business about the Aether winding up in Natalie Portman’s body was just a little too much to wrap my head around, especially after it was assured that the heroes of Asgard buried it so deeply to avoid detection by the Dark Elves.
Odin (Anthony Hopkins) recalls when his father Bor and the warriors from Asgard vanquished the evil Dark Elves and their leader Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) that wanted to send the universe into the darkness during the convergence of nine realms unleashing the powerful weapon Aether. Mallekith escapes and Bor hides the Aether in-between two stone columns.
In the present days, on Earth, the scientist Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) that is waiting for the return of Thor, investigates a gravity phenomenon in an abandoned factory with her assistant and her intern. She finds the column where the Aether is hidden and the substance possesses her. In Asgard, Heimdall (Idris Elba) reports to Thor (Chris Hemsworth) that Jane has disappeared. Thor returns to Earth and finds Jane; but when he sees that he has a strange energy protecting her, he brings Jane to Asgard to be healed.
However, Malekith also awakes and goes to Asgard to retrieve the Aether. After a bloody battle, Frigga (Rene Russo) is murdered by Malekith and Thor proposes treason to his warriors friends of Asgard and teams up with Loki (Tom Hiddleston) to seek revenge for the murder of their mother and to vanquish Malekith before he destroys Asgard with his Dark Elves.
«Thor: The Dark World» is another great adventure of Thor. In this movie, Thor makes the most unlike association with Loki and the result is a wonderful movie. The scene of Loki fighting with Thor is the best moment of «Thor: The Dark World». Chris Hemsworth perfectly impersonates Thor and the conclusion surprises. Last but not the least, the movie is to be watched until the very end of the credits because there are two additional scenes in the credits. My vote is eight.
Title (Brazil): «Thor: O Mundo Sombrio» («Thor: The Dark World»)
Let me start by saying that I don’t hate superhero films. I like them very much when they are done well. I hate laziness in films and superficiality. The problem is that pretty much every superhero film made is very lazy and most of them are entirely superficial. Marvel’s initial idea of an Avengers universe was inspired from a marketing stand point but I am beginning to question whether or not it has been a failure from a creative stand point. ‘Thor the Dark World’ is a terrible movie. It does absolutely nothing to add to the mythos of the character or this Marvel universe. The only reason it exists is to draw up excitement for the next Avengers film.
There are no stakes to this film and there are a lot of places to direct blame. The acting aside from Tom Hiddleston is next to unwatchable. The thing is that this is a very talented cast we are working with here. Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman have both won Academy Awards. Stellan Skarsgard is one of the most fascinating character actors in Hollywood. I like Hemsworth a lot too and thought he was great in the first ‘Thor’ film. But none of them invest anything in the material. Hopkins looks bored and emotes nothing in his delivery. Portman’s performance is terrible too and in the process of it being terrible it makes a terrible script look even worse. Jane Foster is a horrible character here. She is by far the stupidest damsel in distress portrayed in comic books recently. Portman is too lazy to give her any sort of character. She punctuates every cheap joke and many of them are just about how ditsy the character is. This kind of writing and performance make me almost agree that comic books offer a flawed and stereotypical depiction of women. Stellan Skarsgard, an actor I think has great depth, is played as a complete fool here. I hated every time he appeared on screen and I am a Stellan Skarsgard fan. I don’t place the blame all on him but yeah everyone here did something very wrong in bringing these stupidly conceived characters to life.
In actuality though they are not the biggest problem with the film. The problem is that there is no threat to anything or anyone. The villain here is so completely forgettable and has a plan for evil so half assed that they movie really had no chance of working. This is the ultimate example of a conflict for the sake of having a conflict. If actor Christopher Eccleston is not rewarded a Razzie for his portrayal here than that award show has lost all credibility. Villains even poorly written ones with no motivation like this Maleketh should at least offer the actor the chance to try to ham it up with the tropes of goofy villainy. Eccleston doesn’t do that. He has a boring calm delivery that evokes no response but laughter. And since Eccleston’s performance is such an overwhelming failure I was drawn to how stupid his make-up looked too.
I wish I could give this a bomb rating, I really do. To be honest though Tom Hiddleston is too damn good in the Loki role to say the film is completely without merit. They don’t do anything new with his character here but he’s so entertaining and in every Marvel film he adds new layers and nuances to a very interesting character. A whole movie could have been made about this stage of Loki’s life and it would have been so much more entertaining and compelling than this load of work. Hiddleston portrays Loki as unchained with no loyalty to anyone. This is the first film where we see him as a trickster and Hiddleston delivers suffice to say. The problem is he isn’t really in the film long enough. Jane Foster, Darcy, and Dr Selvig all get more screen time than Loki.
Here’s my brilliant business proposition to Marvel. Don’t make any movies but Avengers films. Give your golden boy Joss Whedon the four hundred or so million you spent on ‘Iron Man 3’ and ‘Thor the Dark World’ and see what he does with it. In watching ‘Iron Man 3’ and this film it is clear that is where the mindset and passion are.
I hope the Marvel cinematic universe can be saved but I have to say that their track record is looking really bad right now. Kevin Feige and Disney should look back at Favareu’s first ‘Iron Man’ film. It was gutsy and took risks and there was no guarantee of immediate endless sequels.
Although it’s a film that many have criticised for having the most ordinary plot imaginable, I found THOR: THE DARK WORLD to be a fairly entertaining film and not deserving of all the criticism. Yes, the plot is predictable and some of the surprise plot twists are anything but, but this is the kind of film that holds the attention through spectacle and effect alone.
Thor and his buddies once again have to team up and go into action, this time against a new menace, led by the singularly unremarkable Christopher Eccleston. Natalie Portman is back, unfortunately, as is her grating comic sidekick, but at least Stellan Skarsgard is around to add a bit of whimsy to the cast. Fan favourite Tom Hiddleston returns, of course, but he still doesn’t really appeal to me; I just can’t see what all the fuss is about. Chris Hemsworth is better as the dependable hero of the hour. The CGI effects are decent and the climax suitably imaginative, an inter-dimensional fight scene seemingly inspired by Wes Craven’s SHOCKER. THE DARK WORLD isn’t going to win awards, but it’s watchable all the same.
Following on from the events of the Avengers movie, Thor is back in Asgard, delivering Loki, who is damned to spend an eternity in the Asgardian dungeons.
Jane is in London, still pining for the titular character, as she hasn’t seen him for two years, but still holding out for him.
But there is a new threat from the dark elves. They seek an elixir type essence that will cause darkness amongst the nine realms.
Jane however has found a portal into one of the realms, and gets infected by the essence. Because the dark elves can trace this source, Thor rescues her and takes her back to Asgard, much to Odins dismay.
But the elves plan an attack on Asgard, and after many lives are lost, Thor realises that only one person can help him, and he’s damned for the rest of his life.
The first movie was wonderful. Not only was it exciting and refreshing, but it was one of the funniest Marvel movies released yet. This however takes a huge step back, and really taints phase two of the Marvel releases.
Hemsworth is as good as ever, as is Hiddleston, but apart from Portman, it appears that the rest of the cast have been sidelined, so Thor and Loki can carry on their war of nerves.
It’s also very convoluted, narrative is lost as there is so much going on, and by the end of it all, you wondered what on earth went on, an also what happened to a few of the characters, there are plot holes aplenty.
The humour what was wonderful in the first movie, feels really forced in this, and instead of causing unexpected laughter, had me rolling my eyes as to how silly it felt. Dennings is a thorn in the movies side, she is a parody of her character from the first, and ruins every scene she is in.
The best joke in the film, which was in the trailer, steals from Raiders of the Lost Ark anyway.
Visuals are bland and boring, and Asgard feels like something from The Phantom Menace, combined with Flash Gordon, and the rest of the realms could have come from any Lord Of The Rings movie.
Its a shame, because Marvel know they have a winning formula, but here it feels like they are just in it for the money, and all the cool references and a brilliant cameo, cannot save such a disappointment.
Many will call it Thor-some and other play on word praises.
But for me, and I really hate saying this because Hemsworth is really good, it’s pretty Thor-ful.
Thor: The Dark World left me wondering why for all its popularity and box office hype the superhero genre so regularly fails to ignite the faintest trace of excitement and imagination in its narrative and storytelling. This sequel, following Kenneth Branagh’s reasonably funny 2011 film, was written by no less than five writers, who between them have only mustered another dull, achingly generic story about saving the world. Aside from less than a handful of funny self-referencing points, this is a hugely disappointing by the numbers blockbuster that under services its embarrassingly rich cast and offers its enormous fanbase too little that is challenging, inspired or even surprising.
What’s confusing about the deliberate complacency in the script is that it’s entirely unnecessary. There is no financial risk to comic book adaptations anymore to justify this kind of dumbing down. Earlier this year, Iron Man 3 became one of the top five highest grossing films of all time. While Christopher Nolan’s Batman films have achieved financial success without succumbing to simplified narrative lines. Some even complained The Dark Knight Rises had too many story threads. How many filmmakers today would crawl over broken glass for a cast featuring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba, Tom Hiddleston, Chris O’Dowd and Stellan Skarsgard? With such talent it’s not unreasonable then to ask for more than obligatory special effects and indistinguishable villains, who are included only to prop up pseudo- scientific plot points.
Little effort has been exhausted into humanising these characters. Thor (Hemsworth) is a blank slate who swings his hammer and growls at people. It makes Chris Hemsworth look like a boring actor when we’ve seen how charismatic he can be, like he was in Rush, with the right material and director. There are fewer fish out of water jokes that I enjoyed in the first film. Natalie Portman, normally a delightful, charming actress, is embarrassed here as Thor’s girlfriend, playing a character devoid of plausible emotional responses and desires. Her first reaction after being warped from London to Asgard is to say «Hi!» and «Let’s do that again!» Never mind that her skin is now infected with the Aether, a weapon of mass destruction from an ancient group called the Dark Elves (who speak perfect English no less). She’s more impressed that Thor told his dad about her! The Dark Elves are led by Malekith (Christopher Eccleston), who wants to use the Aether to destroy the world.
Comic book films rise and fall on the quality of their villains. The Dark World has two, both of whom are substandard. The Dark Elves, branding swords and laser weapons, aren’t very interesting. Though Thor’s brother Loki (Hiddleston) sometimes brings comic relief to the film’s dry, seriousness (I did enjoy one clever shape shifting moment) he still doesn’t possess the physicality of Tom Hardy’s Bane to be a truly menacing physical threat. Locked up in a cell for nearly half the film, there’s not a lot for Loki to do. What should also be a haunting surprise at the end of the film is badly telegraphed. When Thor and Loki inevitably team up, the brothers take a few more punches than you might expect, but still recover very quickly, even after a severed hand. Marvel is a subsidiary company belonging to Disney so this is largely bloodless action.
This is the first comic book feature film by Alan Taylor, who replaced Patty Jenkins under controversial circumstances. Taylor has worked on television shows like Game of Thrones, and he brings little distinction to the action and the way the story is told. The camera isn’t particularly mobile and significant plot lines like the Aether are lazily signposted through the film’s prologue. He opts to intercut Thor’s main story with a subplot involving Jane’s scientist friends back on Earth, including an overly excitable Kat Dennings, who are discovering the alignments of Asgard’s nine realms, if that matters. Sometimes they lighten the mood but they’re still cornball stereotypes (the wacky sidekick, the crazy scientist and the dorky intern) that don’t instill any visible subtext to the plot. The two narrative threads collide with Taylor’s most elaborate set piece, as Thor fights simultaneously between universes, a battle that is undone by Thor’s own indestructibility. Over the closing credits are shots of the film’s concept art, which could be totally interchangeable with most of the plotting. It’s time that comic book fans started to demand more from these films before the entire genre evaporates into a disposable, commercialised heap like it does here.

Contents
The Asgardians learn a rare alignment of the cosmic Nine Realms is imminent, and at spots where the Realms touch, as at the factory, passages are created. When Heimdall tells Thor that Foster is no longer on Earth, Thor begins a search for her there. She has awakened in the factory after hours in the other realm, and finds herself releasing powerful energy when a police officer on the scene touches her. Sensing the force’s unearthly nature, Thor brings Foster to Asgard, but its physicians, including Eir, cannot remove it. Odin realizes she is the Aether’s vessel and this heralds a catastrophic prophecy. Frigga — Odin’s wife, Thor’s mother and Loki’s adoptive mother — takes Foster under her wing. In holographic form, Frigga visits Loki in his cell to convey her love and disappointment. Malekith and his forces, awakened by the release of the Aether, attack Asgard and turn Algrim into an enhanced warrior called «the last of the Kursed.» Malekith and Algrim find Foster in Frigga’s chambers, and kill Frigga. Foster there is only a hologram, however; the real Foster is with Thor, who has been ordered to remain and protect Asgard, not pursue the retreating invaders. Following Frigga’s funeral, Thor reluctantly teams with Loki, who knows a secret passage out. With Volstagg and Sif guarding his flank, the two commandeer a Dark Elf spaceship and escape with the Foster. With Fandral’s help and a separate flying boat, they escape pursuing Asgardian forces.
On Earth, Lewis, who has tried in vain to reach S.H.I.E.L.D., has Selvig released from a hospital’s mental ward with the help of her own intern, Ian. Thor, Loki and Foster confront Malekith and Algrim at a desolate waste, where, after a hoax in which Loki appears to betray Thor, Algrim batters Thor and Malekith takes the Aether from Foster. Loki evidently sacrifices himself to keep Malekith from retrieving the Aether, killing Algrim in the process. It is to no avail, as Malekith escapes with the Aether. Thor and Foster return to Earth after stumbling to a portal between realms. The battle shifts to London, where Malekith, in a towering space-vessel, will use the Aether at the exact moment and place of the Nine Realms’ convergence to destroy the universe and restore the dark-energy state in which the Dark Elves thrive. As Thor battles Malekith, Foster and Selvig use devices they’ve constructed to shift energy where the Nine Realms meet. At the last moment, they transport Malekith and his ship to another realm, where the crumbling ship crushes him.
In Asgard, Thor declines Odin’s offer to take the throne and tells Odin of Loki’s sacrifice. As Thor leaves, the image of Odin reverts to the true form of shapeshifter Loki, who, disguised earlier as a warrior, has usurped the throne. In a mid-credits scene, Volstagg and Sif visit the alien Collector and entrust to his care the remains of the Aether, revealed as one of six » Infinity Stones «. In a post-credits scene, Foster and Thor reunite on Earth.
К счастью, Thor: The Dark World — не совсем привычная игра по фильму.
Thor: The Dark World — не совсем типичный проект по фильму, что уже радует.

The Watsonian reason is that Heimdall is a mighty warrior, respected and feared by everyone in Asgard- there’s a reason he guards the Bifrost (he did stab a spaceship to death, after all). He’s loyal and wise, someone that Thor can trust. Heimdall is incorruptible and loyal, but not to the point of stupidity. In the first movie, when Thor demands that Heimdall open the bridge, Heimdall obeys, since Thor is the crown prince. Then, he immediately notifies Odin, because Thor is being a dumbass. In the second film, he assists Thor in tricking Odin, because Odin’s too blinded with grief to properly handle the situation. After doing so, he surrenders, because Odin is still the king.
The Doylist reason is that Heimdall is the only high ranking Asgardian we’ve met who isn’t Thor, Odin, or Loki. There doesn’t seem to be a Baldur in this universe, and there’s only been a cameo or two of Tyr. No one else really carries the authority that Heimdall has, and it’s not likely that they would introduce a new character just to fill the empty throne.
But what if they could attain more than just setting a guy in fire? After Avengers: Infinity War, we now know that the Aether is the natural state of the Reality Stone. When manipulated, said stone was capable of faking environments and immediately transforming one thing into another.
Doesn’t that remind you of Loki’s skillset?
Thor 2 Karanlık Dünya
Binlerce yıl önce Karanlık Elfler adındaki ırk, Aether adında bir silahı kullanarak tüm evreni karanlığa boğmaya çalışmıştır. Tanrı Odin’in babası Bor ve Asgardlı askerleri onları durdurur fakat liderleri Malekith kaçmayı başarmış ve bir sonraki fırsatını beklemeye başlamıştır. Asgardlı savaşçılar Aether’i bulmuştur fakat yok edilemediği için onu saklamaya karar vermişlerdir.

How to Watch ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’: When Is It Streaming on Disney+?
Thor is back for his fourth solo installment in the summer’s latest Marvel release, “Thor: Love and Thunder.”
Attached to his second “Thor” project, Taika Waititi, directed, co-wrote and stars in “Thor: Love and Thunder” following his work on the film “Thor: Ragnarok” in 2017.
Waititi wrote “Thor: Love and Thunder” as a sequel to the 2017 film alongside “Someone Great” screenwriter Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. Hemsworth reprises his role as Thor, while Waititi returns onscreen as Korg, alongside Tessa Thompson and Natalie Portman. The 29th Marvel film, “Thor: Love and Thunder,” follows the steady MCU Phase 4 releases of “Black Widow,” “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” “Eternals,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and most recently “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”
But, how exactly can audiences watch Thor, Valkyrie, Korg, and Jane Foster’s latest reunion? And when will it be streaming on Disney+? All your answers below.
Abomination Showed Up In Shang-Chi Because Of His She-Hulk Role
The beauty of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — or a source of never-ending consternation, depending on who you talk to — is that continuity, for the most part, matters. Characters who were introduced years ago could very well pop up again at the most unexpected time and with an entirely new outlook from when we last saw them. Sometimes, these instances come with the full weight of the passage of time, like when Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster finally returned in «Thor: Love and Thunder» as the Mighty Thor after remaining noticeably absent since 2013’s «Thor: The Dark World.» More often, such cameos are played for laughs as a way to further tie the MCU together — think of Shaun Taub’s Ho Yinsen, the doctor who saved Tony Stark’s life in that cave in the first «Iron Man,» showing up once more in the opening flashback of «Iron Man 3.»
One rather surprising return,

Breaking Bad star Giancarlo Esposito confirms he’s met with Marvel about a role in the MCU and expresses he’d like to portray Professor X.
“As Marvel made its big announcement about what fans can expect from the next two phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, noticeably absent from the list was news concerning the X-Men. Of course, that never stops fans from offering their opinions, which led an actor many have theorized could join the franchise to confirm his possible participation.”

Taika Waititi Looked To His Past To Find Korg’s Thor: Ragnarok Voice
It’d be slightly overstating the matter to claim that the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s take on Thor (Chris Hemsworth) was dead in the water until Taika Waititi showed up. Our first introduction to the God of Thunder with Kenneth Branagh’s 2011 film was appropriately Shakespearean in tone, creating a strong foundation that would carry the character through to his next appearance in 2012’s «The Avengers» and beyond. The failures of «Thor: The Dark World» and the messiness of «Avengers: Age of Ultron» need no reintroductions, however, and few can deny that the situation improved markedly once Thor and his supporting characters came under the influence.

Box Office: Jordan Peele’s ‘Nope’ Opens to No. 1 With 44 Million
Audiences responded with a resounding “yep” to Jordan Peele’s science-fiction thriller “Nope,” which topped the box office with its 44 million debut.
Those ticket sales were slightly behind projections of 50 million and fall in between Peele’s first two films, 2017’s “Get Out” (which opened to 33 million) and 2019’s “Us” (which opened to 71 million). “Nope” may not have cemented a new box office record for Peele, but it marks a strong start for an original, R-rated horror film. In fact, it stands as the highest opening weekend tally for an original film since “Us” debuted more than three years ago. Yes, that includes Quentin Tarantino’s star-studded “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” which started with 41 million in July 2019.
“The opening isn’t as big as ‘Us,’ but it’s still extremely impressive,” says David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research.

All Marvel Movies in Chronological Order
It began with 2008’s “Iron Man,” a film that introduced the world to Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark with the hint that he could be part of something greater. Twenty-five films later, the story of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still being told, albeit with various tributaries and detours that introduce new characters and new worlds that may or may not cross paths one day. Each film in the MCU stands on its own to some degree, but like building blocks, they all connect as part of one interconnected universe. And in that way, watching the Marvel movies in order tells one grand story.
There are a couple of different ways to watch the MCU movies, but below we run down how to watch the Marvel films in chronological order. Indeed, some films like “Captain Marvel” and “Captain America: The First Avenger” are full-on prequels set in the 1990s and 1940s,

Marilyn Monroe Gown and ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ Leotard Sell for Over 250,000 at Auction
Kim Kardashian just missed out on another Marilyn Monroe collectible.
After the “Kardashians” mogul donned two Monroe gowns for the 2022 Met Gala festivities, select costumes from Monroe’s film legacy were auctioned during a four-day “Hollywood Legends” event hosted by Julien’s Auctions in Los Angeles.
A sheer white gown worn by Monroe in the 1954 musical comedy “There’s No Business Like Show Business” marked the highest purchase out of the 1,700 items, fetching a bid of 218,750. A sequin leotard worn by Monroe in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” sold for 102,400 alongside Jane Russell’s matching costume from the 1953 movie.
The auction was hosted in collaboration with Turner Classic Movies on June 1, which would have been Monroe’s 96th birthday. Monroe’s ensembles were among more than 100 items used by or belonging to the screen icon that were sold at auction. The “Some Like It Hot” actress died at age 36 in 1962 under unknown circumstances.

How Thor: Love And Thunder Fails Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster
«Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!»
Now, Michael Corleone may have been speaking about something far more serious than superhero films, but the sentiment certainly applies to the return of Natalie Portman in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Academy Award winner has been absent from the blockbuster behemoth since 2013’s much disliked «Thor: The Dark World,» and it looked like she was out for good. So many great actors get wrapped up in these multi-picture deals with Marvel that swallow so much of the performer’s time that could be spent making other things. Take Elizabeth Olsen, for example, who has.

Eons ago, Bor, father of Odin, vanquished the Dark Elves led by Malekith, who sought to return the universe to its state before creation using a force called the Aether. Fighting off Malekith’s enhanced warriors the Kursed, Bor contains the Aether within a stone column. Unbeknownst to him, Malekith, his lieutenant Algrim and others escape into suspended animation. In the present, in Asgard, Loki stands before Odin in shackles and is sentenced to prison, while Thor, alongside warriors Fandral, Volstagg and Sif repeal invaders from Vanaheim, home of their comrade Hogun; it is the final battle in a two-year war. In London, astrophysicist Jane Foster, who has not seen Thor in that time, attempts a lunch date with a man named Richard but is interrupted by her intern Darcy Lewis. She takes Foster to an abandoned factory where the laws of physics are upended in spots and some children have found that objects thrown down a stairwell reappear above them or else vanish. Foster also learns her colleague Dr. Erik Selvig has apparently gone mad and has been detained after attempting to conduct scientific experiments at Stonehenge naked. Foster, after bringing her own scientific equipment to the factory, is sucked into a vortex where the Aether enters her.
In a mid-credits scene, Volstagg and Sif visit the alien Collector and entrust to his care the remains of the Aether, revealed as one of six «Infinity Stones». In a post-credits scene, Foster and Thor reunite on Earth.

Thor the dark world

Movie Review
Thor is all about delivering quality universal health care.
As a prince of Asgard and guardian of the Nine Realms, he zips around the cosmos like a fish in the sea, and naturally he cares about his subjects’ health and wellness. If a planet suffers from, say, an infection of interlopers or a rash of rebellion, he’ll personally beat down the troublemakers like a scruffy blond antibody. He knocks out feverish skirmishes, douses chill-producing plots and does what he can to help nice, law-abiding people get back on their feet.
And he doesn’t even ask folks to go online to sign up for coverage.
He’s had to make a lot of house calls lately. His adopted brother, Loki, if you remember, nearly destroyed Earth—twice—and the resulting chaos caused some serious indigestion in the Nine Realms. But Thor and his friends now have things well in hand. Maybe the big guy will have time for a little rest and relaxation—a short vacay down on Earth where he can hang out with his main squeeze Jane Foster and, I dunno, go to Cracker Barrel or something.
But wait, what’s this? Jane is not feeling quite herself right now. She’s been infected, it would seem, by some sort of cosmic gunk called Aether—a substance that threatens both Jane’s life and the lives of those around her. Moreover, Aether is indestructible: Jane’s carrying a disease that even Thor’s mighty hammer can’t cure.
And the bad news gets worse. Malekith, an evil elf and old foe of Thor’s grandpappy, has been waiting for an opportunity to get his hands on—and weaponize—the Aether. For thousands of years, he and his elvish hordes have been napping, waiting for the perfect moment to use the Aether to destroy the entire universe.
Malekith, you see, hails from a time before the universe as we know it was around. He and his cohorts think the whole of creation was a mighty negative development, and they’d like to get back to the good old days when things were cold and dark and empty. They see life itself as the disease.
Positive Elements
Thor won’t let Malekith destroy the universe without a fight, of course. To paraphrase another great superhero (The Tick), the universe is where we keep all our stuff. And Thor will do whatever he can to keep all of our stuff—or at least most of it—safe and sound.
First, Thor and his colleagues try to set up the climactic showdown with Malekith on an uninhabited world, thus keeping innocent casualties down. Granted, this means defying a direct order from Odin, Thor’s father and king, but Thor and Co. are all willing to accept the consequences—exile if successful and death should they fail. All the participants understand that they are, in essence, sacrificing themselves for a greater good.
[Spoiler Warning] But their best efforts won’t be enough to stop Malekith, so Thor turns to an unlikely ally: His duplicitous brother. While Thor knows Loki can’t be trusted, Thor’s scheme won’t work without him. So he cautiously brings the guy aboard—and Loki doesn’t disappoint. Indeed, the two brothers save each other’s lives and share a tender moment of reconciliation … that will last at least until the next Thor movie comes out.
Queen Frigga does what she can to save the mortal Jane Foster from Malekith’s clutches, risking her life for the earthling. And Jane herself attempts to shield Thor from a falling spaceship—a rather ineffectual gesture, but most sincerely meant.
Spiritual Elements
Thor, Odin, Loki et al are, of course, plucked from Norse mythology. They are sometimes referred to as deities, and Loki tells his father that he wanted to rule Earth like a beneficent god. Odin, however, rebukes Loki’s claim on the divine.
“We are not gods,” he tells Loki. “We’re born. We live. We die. Just like humans do.”
“Give or take 5,000 years,” Loki amends with a smirk.
With that, Thor: The Dark World neatly sidesteps one of its story’s highest spiritual hurdles. But the film also creates additional questions.
We’re given a short history of the universe: Creation itself is presented as a fairly new development (and given Loki’s own estimate on how long Asgardians live, it might fit neatly into a young-Earth proponent’s timeline). Before creation, there was darkness, we’re told, just as Genesis says. But that darkness wasn’t completely empty: Malekith and his evil elves were around. Nor is God explicitly credited with creation. A flashback to a huge war between Malekith and Thor’s grandfather takes on cosmic, even spiritual significance as it becomes a battle between light and darkness in which the universe itself hangs in the balance. In that battle, Malekith and his minions are, at least temporarily, defeated.
So there are echoes of Revelation and John Milton here, but also a muddled view of where our “big G” God is in all of this.
As for more mortal expressions of faith and religion, during a funeral we see a corpse laid on a boat floating on the Asgardian sea. An archer sets the boat on fire with a flaming arrow and, as it plunges off the end of the earth (it would seem), something—dust, wind, spirit or all three—leaves the vessel and floats into space. Mourners lift glowing orbs in their hands and they, too, begin to float, like luminescent balloons.
Loki tells a monster that he’ll see him in hell. Someone’s called a witch.
Sexual Content
Thor’s obligatory shirtless scene inspired a few women in my screening audience to hoot and whistle softly. Thor and Jane kiss once or twice, and Darcy the intern aggressively smooches her intern, Ian. During a party, one of Thor’s associates lingers suggestively with two women, one of whom sits on his lap. Someone mentions that his old girlfriend “kept sleeping with other dudes.”
Violent Content
Battles are huge and relentless. In the flashback showdown between Malekith and Thor’s grandfather, Bor, we see tons of flashing swords and spears and laser-like guns and reality-twisting grenades. (That latter weapon seems to suck victims into a vortex and fold them up.) A field is littered with the corpses of Asgardians and dark elves. Other melees feature the same allotment of weapons, which are always used to devastatingly lethal effect. Spaceships destroy buildings, crash and sometimes do both simultaneously—causing untold (unseen) casualties.
A rock monster gets crushed by Thor’s hammer. A demon-like creature forces a man’s head into a force field, and we can hear his screams. A bad guy loses both of his arms, and a good guy appears to have his hand sliced off. (We see the bloody stump.) An evil henchman is swallowed almost whole by a strange and fearsome creature, and several more are crushed by someone throwing a car. In one melee, Thor snaps a bad guy’s neck. A demi-god and a demon get stabbed through the chest (at the same time with the same blade). A woman is run through with a sword. Someone gets pounded in the face.
The Aether is a violent substance. When Jane has the stuff in her system, anyone who threatens her gets blown back with a mini-explosion. The substance is used to assail, toss and tumble Thor and others.
Crude or Profane Language
One s-word is fully said, another gets interrupted. We hear two or three uses each of “d‑‑n” and “h‑‑‑”; three or four misuses of God’s name.
Drug and Alcohol Content
Asgardians do like their strong drink. We see one of Thor’s friends toss a flagon over his shoulder and shout for another. Human diners order wine.
Scientist Eric Selvig apparently takes a great deal of medicine to help keep his brain on the straight and narrow. When a couple of people get him released from an asylum-like establishment, they give him a bagful of prescriptions; once he learns what’s happening, though, Eric expresses relief that the world is crazier than he is and dumps the bag into a trash can.
Other Negative Elements
In a scene designed to be funny, not titillating, the elderly Eric runs naked around Stonehenge and is documented by news cameras. (His midsection is pixelated.) People lie and mislead—sometimes for arguably good reasons, sometimes not.
Conclusion
Marvel has developed a lucrative formula for superhero movies, and rarely does it deviate. While rival DC plays around with grit and drama and heavy themes (most successfully realized in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy), Marvel mostly offers colorful escapism. There’s action and adventure, buff leading men and comely women. It trots out some insider references for the comic zealots in the audience, but not enough to alienate casual fans. Most importantly, these movies never take themselves too seriously: Marvel dares to crack a joke even when the stakes are at their highest.
Which creates something of a paradox. Even as these superhero yarns are no-holds-barred fever dreams of color and spectacle, they’re comfortingly predictable. Everyone who walks into the theater knows by now what’s coming. Marvel movies are as reliable as a six-pack of Coke: Every can tastes the same.
That sounds disparaging, but I don’t mean it to. Movies may sometimes be art, but they’re always commodities—products designed to please an audience. And we consumers want some sort of assurance that we’ll get what we pay for. Marvel’s stories may have their share of surprises, but the cadence of the telling, the mood and the content don’t deviate much these days—and I doubt they will until the box office sizzle starts to cool.
That’s good news when it comes to families trying to make decisions about how healthy movies might be for them. Thor: The Dark World is not problem free by any means, but it is, at least, a known quantity. It may be (as its name suggests) slightly darker than its predecessor, but it’s by a matter of degree, and the degrees here are small.

Thor 2 is a hot mess. The biggest difference from the original is the total lack of chemistry between Thor and Natalie Portman. It’s less than zero. You’re wishing like hell Thor will drop the mortal, and hook up with Jaimie Alexander. Ms Portman has «bored face» the entire runtime. I mean, they make Anakin and Padmé, look like Macho Man and Miss Elizabeth. Why the change in chemistry? I’m sure it has something to due with the director. Ms Portman didn’t like the final choice, wanted to get out of her contract, she couldn’t, and it shows.

I didn’t care for any of the characters besides Loki and the 2 minutes on the screen of Zachary Levi. The plot was so messy, and the jokes were unfunny. The villain was boring, and the movie is just forgettable.

The weakest Marvel movie since THE INCREDIBLE HULK, THOR: THE DARK WORLD (to be followed, I expect, by Ralph Bakshi’s THOR: THE COOL WORLD) coasts along on the superb casting of its leads and their near-godlike charisma. It would be fun to watch Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Tom Hiddleston’s Loki snake a shower drain, which is fortunate because their adventures here aren’t much more exciting than rudimentary plumbing work.
The villains are hopelessly generic and one-dimensional; Snidely Whiplash looks relatively nuanced in comparison. All their plans depend on a substance called «the aether» which, despite…
Thor: The Dark World – first look review
Hiddleston and Hemsworth’s impressive collective charisma rescues this followup to Thor, but the film is missing Kenneth Branagh’s directorial delicacy of touch

D isney-owned Marvel studios has proven itself an efficient production line for sumptuously entertaining superhero fare over the past few years, with comic-book titans Iron Man, Thor and Captain America all showing up in their own movies before coming together to save the world with wisecracking panache in Joss Whedon’s 2012 box-office smash The Avengers. This year’s Iron Man 3 proved that the team’s individual members maintain solo appeal with its deft, Ben Kingsley-fuelled subversion of superhero stereotypes. Now it’s the turn of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor to return in The Dark World, a sequel to 2011’s Kenneth Branagh-directed origins story about the Norse demigod turned protector of Earth.
On the face of it, everything is in place for another rousing entry in the canon, this time under the stewardship of Game of Thrones’s Alan Taylor. Thor must face down a new threat from Christopher Eccleston’s pointy-eared Malekith, a «dark elf» who wants to turn the lights out across the nine realms. There are teething problems in his relationships with Natalie Portman’s swooning scientist, Jane Foster, (upset because the musclebound lunk hasn’t called for two years) and Tom Hiddleston’s sneering Loki (banged up in an Asgardian cell after trying to induce armageddon in The Avengers). Yet Thor has his mighty hammer, Mjölnir, and one senses everything will work out fine.
The problem is that no amount of tool-wielding heroism can save The Dark World from being a startlingly unbalanced movie. It’s no secret that Loki was gifted extra scenes in the post-production process, while Eccleston’s Malekith had a whole lot of backstory wrenched from beneath his elven feet. The result is a film in which an unmissable Hiddleston once again does a superb job of blending vulnerability with searing evil as he’s freed from prison to help Thor take down the new threat. Yet there are times we almost forget Malekith is in the movie. The latter comes into his own in the film’s spectacular endgame, played out in conveniently tourist-friendly parts of London. But it’s all a lot too little, rather too late.
Thanks to Hiddleston and Hemsworth’s impressive collective charisma, Thor: The Dark World is far from a franchise killer. Yet the film is missing Branagh’s delicacy of touch: there are numerous comedic interludes, but nothing to match the ingenious cutaway scene from the first film in which Thor walks into a pet shop and cheerfully demands a horse. Taylor provides plenty of weepy material – but there is not a single segue to compare with the brief, pathos-laden shot from Thor of the power-deprived Asgardian hero ignoring his woes to serve a simple breakfast to his human comrades.
Thor and Loki shared just one genuine superpower in Branagh’s film: an unexpectedly touching humanity. The Dark World’s loss is that it does not shine quite so brightly the second time around.
Thor: The Dark World
Thor: The Dark World review
No spoilers, as Chris Hemsworth returns to the big screen as Thor in Thor: The Dark World. Here’s our review.
Thor: The Dark World surpasses the original film in visual spectacle, and even (surprisingly) amps up the humor. By essentially giving the fans what they asked for (in this case, more time on Asgard and less time with Thor making pancakes), the sequel feels larger, despite less in the way of character development or actual story. Nevertheless, it’s a fun romp, with plenty to offer the comic book fan.
There isn’t much to the plot of Thor: The Dark World. A long-vanquished foe, Malekith The Accursed (Christopher Eccleston) returns to reclaim a magical mystery known as the Aether and take revenge on the denizens of Asgard. That’s basically it, really. The expected fireworks ensue, and the film manages to hit enough comic book beats to keep longtime fans of Thor and his supporting cast quite happy.

Chris Hemsworth displays more of the atypical comedic timing that made the original Thorfilm such a pleasant surprise, and he remains a likable enough presence as the God of Thunder (alright, they aren’t gods…something which Anthony Hopkins’ Odin makes quite clear at one point in case you had any doubts). As for Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster and Kat Dennings’ Darcy, well…if you loved ‘em in the first movie, you’re in luck. If you found there to be a lack of chemistry between Portman and Hemsworth or found Darcy’s hipster snark irritating, well…nothing in Thor: The Dark World is going to change your mind.
Anthony Hopkins is given considerably more screen time as Odin this time around, as is Renee Russo as Thor’s mother, Frigga. In fact, Russo’s Frigga (who was so barely present in the original that it’s easy to forget that she was there at all) gets a terrific fight scene in at one point, which, while brief, is a highlight of the movie. Tom Hiddleston’s Loki is…well…what more is there to say about him? From the moment he shows up in chains (as a consequence of the events of The Avengers), he displays more screen presence and charm than any number of his peers. It’s easy to root for Loki, even though we all know what a terrible idea that is.
The shadow of artists like Jack Kirby and Walt Simonson is a long one, and Thor: The Dark World owes a tremendous debt to the work of both of these comic book titans. The time spent on Asgard is about as lush as anything we’ve ever seen in a Marvel film. While none of the special effects ever rise above the level of your standard modern blockbuster fare, there’s just so many of them, and the novelty of seeing all of these characters from Marvel’s Thor mythology fully-realized on screen doesn’t seem to wear thin.

Where the visuals are a little more memorable is anything dealing with outer space or cosmic settings and technology, which bodes quite well for at least the look of Guardians Of The Galaxy, not to mention Disney’s StarWarsfilms. However, the bright colors of Asgard, the mix of sword, sorcery, and science-fiction, and the sumptuous clothing and architecture of Asgard do help Thor: The Dark Worldstand out a little from the usual earthbound blockbuster fare. Look at Man of Steel’s washed-out look and how Avengerswas limited to the greys and blues of New York City, and then compare it to the rainbow bridges and golden spires on display in the Nine Realms. The larger CGI action sequences suffer a bit in the bright light of Asgard from time to time, and the 3D is completely disposable. There isn’t a single visual on display that’s enhanced by the 3D presentation. Save the extra few bucks and munch on some popcorn, instead.
If Thor: The Dark World commits one absolutely unforgivable sin, it’s the waste of a good villain and an even better actor. Christopher Eccleston plays Malekith the Accursed (along with this heavy, Kurse, played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), and he’s barely present. His motives are unclear, he gets far too little screentime, and too many of Eccleston’s lines are electronically altered or delivered in some kind of Elven dialect. While Thor doesn’t exactly have the greatest rogues’ gallery to begin with (and woe to any actor who tries to outshine Tom Hiddleston in this franchise), Malekith is not only a great visual (both on the page and the screen), but a proper comic book villain with loads of potential, and a viewer can’t help but feel a little cheated by his absence here.
The good news is, despite the lack of a plot of any kind of consequence Thor: The Dark World never becomes an easter egg hunt for future Marvel films (that mid-credits sequence notwithstanding, but those don’t count), a criticism which was rightfully leveled at Iron Man 2. All in all, Thor: The Dark World is a fine, fun, rather mindless little romp. It’s not going to change any minds about superhero films, but for fans, this is probably the Thor movie you’ve always dreamed of.
Revisiting the surprisingly essential Thor: The Dark World after Avengers: Endgame

Share All sharing options for: Revisiting the surprisingly essential Thor: The Dark World after Avengers: Endgame
Chances are you haven’t thought a lot about Thor: The Dark World since the sequel hit theaters in 2013. The God of Thunder’s second standalone opened to mixed reviews, and though it was a success at the box office, the movie didn’t make much of a splash with fans, particularly sandwiched between Iron Man 3 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It’s mostly regarded as expendable, lacking the distinction of being an introductory run like the first Thor, and not as funny as its sequel, Thor: Ragnarok, without that much of a bearing on everything that’s come since.
Avengers: Endgame, however, puts The Dark World back into the conversation. There’s something impressive about the way that the film makes the seemingly inconsequential entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe unmissable — Ant-Man and the Wasp becomes indispensable, and the plot of The Dark World is suddenly key to saving the world.
When it becomes clear that the only way to undo Thanos’ snap is to travel back in time and collect the Infinity Stones before they’re destroyed, the Avengers set about figuring out where (and when) they have to go. Thor has a lead on the Reality Stone: He had an early brush with red gem back in 2013 when it was in the form of the Aether, i.e. during the events of The Dark World.
Thor puts the pieces together through stream of consciousness rambling, basically recapping The Dark World for anyone who forgot exactly what happened in the movie. It’s funny, but the emotional impact that Thor’s trip back to that exact window in time suggests that the film has been criminally overlooked. The things that Thor wrestles with — his grief over his mother’s death; his largely unaddressed breakup with Jane Foster; his worry that he might not be worthy to wield Mjolnir — are all huge to his character, and were seeds planted in The Dark World. Even turning the rule of New Asgard over to Valkyrie has its roots in the second Thor film.
That Thor must prove himself worthy — to wield the hammer, to rule — is a thread that’s carried through his entire tenure in the MCU, and The Dark World acts as another test. He only returns to Earth because Jane accidentally becomes host to the Aether, and his ultimate decision not to take the throne of Asgard has everything to do with, as he realizes in Endgame, the need for him to be who he is, not necessarily who he’s expected to be. He will protect the Seven Realms, he tells Odin in The Dark World, but he “would rather be a good man than a great king.” (This should ring some bells for any Captain America devotees as a familiar theme — “not a perfect soldier, but a good man” — as well as Black Panther’s “it is hard for a good man to be a king.”)
Avengers: Endgame settles Thor: Ragnarok’s open ending with a nod to comics
The ‘worthy’ heroes who have wielded Thor’s hammer in the comics
Thor’s reaction to his new look is the only one that matters
Thor’s Endgame guilt over being unable to stop Thanos, and the further weight that places on the realization that he could actually turn back time and prevent his mother’s murder, serves as one of the film’s most poignant emotional beats. When the Aether possesses Jane Foster, the shift wakes the Dark Elves, who kill Frigga in their initial attack upon Asgard as they search for Jane. Thor is busy fighting in the dungeons when it happens, but future-Thor actually runs into his mother right before the tragedy occurs. He’s clearly tempted to change fate, but Frigga knows better. What’s important is that he knows that she loves him and, as he discovers when he tries summoning Mjolnir, that his failures do not make him unworthy.
Relevance to the larger MCU aside, The Dark World is a is worth revisiting on its own merits. The mere fact that part of it is set in high fantasy outer space immediately vaults it into fairly goofy territory. For all that it might seem a little melodramatic, it’s funny in a way that’s a natural lead-up to the bombastic quality of Ragnarok. Silence as Thor is wiped across a window, bystanders refusing to leave because they want to see the legendary hero, Chris O’Dowd (whatever happened to him, anyway?) — The Dark World is a romp.
It helps that the Dark Elves — though inconsequential to any further Marvel lore in the way that, say, Skrulls have turned out to be — are compelling villains. The dead-eyed masks they wear and the idea that they must sacrifice themselves for true firepower (on micro and macro levels, as the Kursed “berserkers” are essentially committing harakiri, and as their leader, Malekith, chooses to crash his ships to wipe out as many Asgardians as possible rather than surrender) are details that defy The Dark World’s dull reputation.
In other words, The Dark World still has emotional stakes, particularly when it comes to the fractures in Thor’s family life. Loki, now fully aware that he’s not a true Asgardian and thrown into jail by his adoptive father, has an even clearer chip on his shoulder. That doesn’t, however, mean that his years of being raised by Thor’s side amount to nothing — Thor makes it clear that he still cares about Loki, even though he can no longer trust him — nor that he doesn’t still care for Frigga. Her death profoundly affects both of her sons, reluctant as Loki may be to admit it.
The film also addresses the broader repercussions of what happens in the MCU in a way that is often overlooked in the other films. (Spider-Man: Homecoming is notable in this respect, as it offers a clear look at how the destruction caused by superheroes affects everyday people.) Jane’s personal life is thrown off by her romantic entanglement with Thor and the way his responsibilities demand his detachment, and on a more serious note, Dr. Selvig is still suffering the aftershocks of having been mind-controlled by Loki in Avengers. (Has he recovered since then? He got snapped back, right? I need answers, Kevin Feige!)
It’s good bigger-picture building in a film that can otherwise, on a surface level, seem detached from the franchise it’s a part of, though even a brief investigation proves just how essential it is.
In fairness, The Dark World came along at a time when Thor was still working towards popularity. Thor has always been a big sweetie, but it’s a perception that only really cemented itself circa Ragnarok (or, really, after Chris Hemsworth proved his comic chops in the 2016 Ghostbusters). The highfalutin aesthetic of Asgard doesn’t immediately bring to mind the kind of neon hijinks that characterized Ragnarok, a problem that Thor got around by setting the bulk of the action on Earth. The Dark World goes half and half — but makes up for it with a cogent emotional through-line and a surprising willingness to get gonzo. The film’s final sequence, which involves zapping things in and out of different dimensions, is a blast.
Now that The Dark World has properly been folded into the MCU canon rather than remaining a strange vestigial limb, it’s time to give the movie its due. It’s good as a standalone film, and as a part of a larger arc, helps to set up everything that Thor is, now.

Something New
Disney has released a full list of character descriptions for the upcoming Marvel sequel ‘Thor: The Dark World,’ revealing some of the origins, motivations, and fates of its huge cast of characters.
A large part of the charm of the original Thor was its faithfulness to the incredibly out-there, just-slightly goofy universe of the original Stan Lee/Jack Kirby-created comic books. That fidelity meant the film made room for much of the comics’ wonderful supporting cast – something that may have made Thor a little overstuffed, but increased its fun and vitality in the same equation.
It looks as if the same track is being taken by the upcoming sequel, Thor: The Dark World. Packed to the rafters with new and returning characters straight from the comics, moviegoers may end up wanting a primer before going into the viewing experience. Fortunately for them, Disney has recently released a handy list of characters – including their current statuses – to get you up to speed.
Stitch Kingdom has shared an official list of short biographies of Thor: The Dark World’s principal characters – along with a few fan-favorite supporting roles. The full descriptions are thus:
Thor Odinson is the Prince and future King of Asgard, an advanced alien civilization. Once arrogant and impulsive, Thor was banished to Earth by his father, Odin. The experience taught him humility, but put him into conflict with his adopted brother Loki. After saving the Earth from Loki’s schemes alongside the Avengers, Thor now faces a new enemy — one that threatens to destroy everything he cares for.
Jane Foster (Natalie Portman)
Jane Foster is an astrophysicist who met Thor when he was exiled to Earth by his father. The two had an intense attraction in the short time they were together, and through Jane, Thor learned the value of humility and the heroic nature of humanity. After being separated since Thor’s first visit to Earth, Jane has moved on with her life… but now finds herself pulled into Thor’s world once again by an ancient evil.
Loki (Tom Hiddleston)
Loki Laufeyson is the adopted brother of Thor, raised alongside him from birth by Odin. Upon learning his true lineage, Loki sought to conquer both Asgard and Earth but was stopped by Thor and the Avengers. Still arrogant and unrepentant, Loki sits in the dungeons of Asgard, with only his mother Frigga seeing any hope for him. But when an ancient enemy seeks the destruction of Asgard, Loki finds his loyalties tested.
Dr. Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård)
Dr. Erik Selvig is a fellow astrophysicist and mentor to Jane Foster and was with her when Thor arrived on Earth. Selvig’s mind was possessed by Loki, who forced him to aid in his invasion of Earth. Loki’s mind control was lifted after Thor and the Avengers defeated him, but Selvig’s mental state has deteriorated due to Loki’s influence. Selvig now finds himself at the center of cosmic events once again as two worlds collide.
Heimdall (Idris Elba)
Heimdall is the sentinel of Asgard with the ability to see and hear events galaxies away. He stands at his post in Asgard’s Observatory, watching over the cosmos and protecting Asgard from any and all intruders. As one of Odin’s most trusted warriors, Heimdall is beyond reproach…but now Asgard faces an enemy that even Heimdall cannot see.
Malekith (Christopher Eccleston)
Malekith is the cruel leader of the Dark Elves, a race of beings said to be older than the universe itself. Born into darkness, Malekith led his people in a war against the Asgardians, but they were thought to have been destroyed thousands of years ago. Malekith survived, however, and now seeks to transform our universe, plunging it back into eternal darkness.
Algrim/Kurse (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje)
Algrim/Kurse is Malekith’s trusted and loyal lieutenant. He fought at Malekith’s side during the initial war with Asgard thousands of years ago, but now their time is running out. Algrim is called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice and is transformed into the monstrous Kurse. With a new and terrifying power, Kurse seeks to destroy Thor and Asgard in preparation for Malekith’s arrival.
Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings)
Darcy Lewis is Jane Foster’s intern, a quirky but quick-thinking poli-sci major who found herself in the middle of Earth’s first contact with an alien civilization. And while she doesn’t always understand everything that’s happening around her, she doesn’t hesitate to speak up about it. When Jane discovers an ancient cosmological event affecting the Earth, it’s Darcy who has to pick up the slack when Jane disappears.
Volstagg (Ray Stevenson)
Volstagg makes up one third of the Warriors Three, Asgard’s greatest and most loyal warriors. Large and imposing, Volstagg’s skill with an axe is matched only by his appetite. With Fandral and Hogun, Volstagg has fought alongside Thor on many adventures across the cosmos. And while the stories of his exploits are often elaborated, he’s a hero to the Asgardian people.
Fandral (Zachary Levi)
Fandral is Asgard’s finest swordsman, which serves him well as a member of the Warriors Three. Alongside Volstagg and Hogun, Fandral fights to protect Asgard from any and all foes. When not using his sword to smite his enemies, Fandral uses his charm and good looks to woo the ladies.
Hogun (Tadanobu Asano)
Hogun, often known as Hogun The Grim, is the deadliest of the Warriors Three. With both spiked mace and blade, Hogun defends Asgard as well as his own home, the peaceful planet of Vanaheim. Though he rarely speaks, his loyalty to Thor is legendary… as is his disapproval of Fandral and Volstagg’s frivolous natures.
Sif (Jaimie Alexander)
Sif is one of Asgard’s most formidable warriors. Skilled and fearless, she’s a trusted and faithful ally to Thor. During his banishment, Sif saw Loki’s treachery and risked all to return Thor to Asgard…but on Earth, she saw that she had lost Thor’s heart to another—the human Jane Foster. Now at the end of a long campaign to free the Nine Realms from strife, Sif seeks to rekindle her relationship with Thor.
Frigga (Rene Russo)
Frigga is wife of Odin and mother of Thor and Loki. The glue that holds the royal family together, Frigga knew that there was more to Odin’s banishment of Thor than met the eye, just as she now sees that there’s more within the villainous Loki than the others see. But when Asgard is attacked, Frigga will fight to defend those that she loves at any cost.
Odin (Anthony Hopkins)
Odin is King of Asgard, Protector of the Nine Realms, and father to Thor and Loki. Odin’s long reign is coming to an end, however, and while disappointed with Thor’s arrogance at first, he now sees that Thor is ready for the throne. But when an ancient enemy returns, Odin questions Thor’s allegiances…for if Thor is to be king, he must choose duty over his heart’s desires.
In truth, this list doesn’t reveal much that hasn’t already been shared via the Thor: The Dark World trailer or nuggets of official information that have slipped out in previous months. Most interesting are the hints at Malekith and the Dark Elves’ motivations for coming out of the shadows to once again wage war on Asgard. Why exactly is “time running out” for the race of Svartalfheim?
Poor Dr. Selvig seems to have a more interesting character arc building for him than simply reprising his role as a convenient Nordic physicist. We may see him taking a stab at redemption after his (admittedly brainwashed) role in the Battle of New York in The Avengers.
Also of note is the tone of Odin’s character entry, which seems to imply that the character may soon step away from the Asgardian kingship. This would make sense if Thor: The Dark World is drawing heavily from the Thor tales of Walt Simonson, which initially introduced Malekith and saw the departure of Odin from his throne during wartime. Could this also mean the departure of Anthony Hopkins from the franchise?
At the very least, Disney/Marvel’s release of this comprehensive list serves as a handy way for fans to reacquaint themselves with the franchise before the movie’s release. Doubtless there are plenty of surprises left up Thor: The Dark World’s figurative sleeves.
Thor: The Dark World will strike theaters on November 8th, 2013.

What to know
critics consensus
It may not be the finest film to come from the Marvel Universe, but Thor: The Dark World still offers plenty of the humor and high-stakes action that fans have come to expect. Read critic reviews
