Best universities in the world
Why is it important to understand rankings?
Through rankings, an applicant can assess the quality of teaching, percentage of deductions, number of English speakers, conditions of laboratory equipment, and so on. Do not fall for the stereotype that the goal of any brilliant student is to get into Oxford or Cambridge. Everyone has their own ideal university, and it may well turn out that the most popular and «prestigious» ones do not suit you personally.
There are several authoritative rankings, each of which can place universities in a completely different order. At the same time, the composition of the top 50 in various ranking systems coincides by 60-70%. It must be understood that all rankings are statistics and survey results, which are not always confirmed in practice. Ivy League schools deliver several thousand graduates every year, but not every one of them becomes a great inventor or even finds a high-paying job.
Types of rankings
In general, all ranking systems can be divided by scope: global and national.
There are about 20 world ranking systems. Usually, they compare 500 to 1500 universities. They use their own methodologies, which is why universities will not have the same positions. In one ranking, a university may have a high position due to reviews, and in another, a low position due to fewer published studies.
National rating systems are suitable for those who have already decided on a country. These include, for instance, CHE University Ranking (Germany), The Complete University Guide (UK), and Niche (USA).
There are more than 60 national ranking systems in total. They offer many more choices than international ones do, but not all of them can be objective or of high quality. Half of the national ranking systems are managed by government organizations, and the other half — by private companies or the media. The latter, due to a lack of resources, can raise the position of universities for money or provide false/outdated information.
Both world and national rankings can have specializations:
How university rankings are formed
We will talk about popular world ranking systems and their methodologies a bit later. Here we propose to consider the key factors that influence the positions of universities.
Science and research
Science and research is perhaps the most important factor in rankings and the most misleading factor in choosing a university. The scientific potential of a university is evaluated according to several criteria:
There is also Webometrics, which ranks universities by the frequency of mentions and the number of publications on the Internet (only open access articles are taken into account). It is more objective than QS and THE, since it does not take into account the prestige of universities — it only looks at figures for specific scientific indicators. And still, the leading positions are occupied by Harvard, Stanford, Oxford, MIT, and other well-known universities — which is logical, because throughout their history they have produced hundreds of Nobel laureates and tens of thousands of revolutionary articles. They have conducted millions of important studies, which attracted more funding, brilliant scientists, and so on.
If you aim to conduct postdoctoral research and study in a MRes (master’s degree in research) or PhD program, then scientific indicators will be one of the main factors when choosing a university. Otherwise, pay more attention to other criteria.
Student-teacher ratio
This is the number of students per teacher. In QS Ranking, such a ratio makes up 20% of the total score. The leading positions according to this criterion are occupied by American and British universities, which isn’t surprising. The university systems there are so developed that there are about 10 students per teacher, while European universities have up to 300 students per professor. This factor is more important than it may seem at first glance. After all, a student will absorb better information in a small room at a seminar than in a huge lecture hall. Thus, the student-teacher ratio directly affects the quality of teaching.
International orientation
The number of international students at a university is also taken into account, but to a lesser extent. This indicator makes up only 10% of the grade in QS and 7.5% in THE. However, such a factor affects the chances of a foreign student to enter and take part in scientific projects.
In addition to the above, there are other factors. Some of them relate more to the staff than to students, but in one way or another they have an impact on the educational process. For example:
Henceforth, we invite you to get acquainted with the most famous world ranking systems in order to understand what indicators they consider when evaluating universities, and why this or that university actually takes its place.
World university rankings
QS Rankings
QS Rankings is produced by the British Quacquarelli Symonds company, and takes into account five criteria.
As you can see, the reputation of a university makes up exactly half of the ranking score, based solely on the opinion of the focus group — scholars and employers. For this reason, the rating is often accused of being biased. It is almost impossible for universities from developing countries or universities that have not yet made a name for themselves to make the list.

QS is convenient in that it also offers ratings by region and area of study:
You can also view the results for specific specialties (dentistry, archeology, geography, and so on). Of course, at the world level they will be approximately the same: MIT, Stanford, and Cambridge. The only exceptions are «unusual» programs, such as librarianship or agriculture, where completely different universities take on the leading positions. In the same QS system, you can find graduate employability rankings, which reflect how well universities teach in demand professional skills to prepare students for work.
If you decide to use QS Rankings, remember that the main indicator is the reputation of a university, which does not always guarantee the quality of education. However, it is hard to deny that the prestige of a university provides funding and attracts researchers, and this only benefits students.
Times Higher Education (THE)
THE is an independent ranking system. It was first published with Quacquarelli Symonds (QS Ranking), but the companies split in 2009. THE editors have developed their own methodology, which takes into account more indicators than QS does. At the same time, both systems repeat the same universities in their top twenty list (with the exception of Singaporean universities). THE evaluates universities according to various indicators, grouped into five sections:
THE, like QS, allows you to sort universities by subject, country, and region.

Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU)
To determine the research potential of a university, it is better to refer to the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). It evaluates universities according to five criteria:
ARWU was created on the basis of Shanghai University to understand how big a gap there is between Chinese and American/British universities. Interestingly, in 2021, there was not a single Chinese university in the top 20 ARWU. Also, the Shanghai ranking is known to be the most consistent, given that the positions of universities rarely change.
Among the advantages of ARWU are ratings by regions and faculties, a focus on scientific activity, and an account for prestigious university awards. Of the drawbacks — a focus on the Chinese labor market, criteria that are not applicable to most universities, a small database, and the lack of assessment on teaching quality.

Universities with the biggest endowments
University rankings in terms of academic performance are, of course, significant — they reflect the quality of education and student satisfaction. However, they do not take into account details that may also be important for students, an example being the general financial investments in the development of the university. For students, this indicator means the possibility of receiving financial assistance, and for those who plan to study science, means good funding for projects, comfortable conditions for research, and high salaries. The wealthier the university, the more scholars it attracts from around the world.
It is worth taking a closer look at the financial situation of a university if you plan to engage in scientific research or are looking for large scholarships. The Ivy League schools, for example, provide grants that can fully cover the cost of education due to its large budget.

Largest universities
Such an indicator is especially interesting to look at right after the list of the richest universities. Please note that these two indicators do not coincide, and often even diverge.
Wealthy universities, as a rule, are also prestigious with a worldwide reputation, and can therefore only afford to accept the best applicants. Highly competitive, Harvard and Stanford only accept 3-5% of applications. Universities where many students study are, for the most part, located in South Asia, and are financed not from private funds, but by the state. They do not have much of a budget, and there are literally millions of students. Because of this, they are unable to provide quality education and high salaries to employees, as well as to purchase good equipment for research.

Most multinational universities
More and more universities are oriented towards multiculturalism. This is due to the general trend of globalization and the desire to bring the experience of students and scholars from different countries to science and art. For those who plan to study abroad, this indicator is also important. After all, if a university walks under the slogan of diversity, then it can be easier for a foreign student to study there. Such universities have well-developed student communities and an active international department that helps students from other countries with adaptation. Because of this, they do not feel like strangers. The stress of moving and interacting with a new culture can negatively impact a student’s mood, motivation, and academic performance. Therefore, the presence of special centers that provide support to students is also important.
The Times Higher Education website has published a ranking of the most international universities. It was created on the basis of four factors:

Click here to discover the top universities in the world in 2020.
The QS World University Rankings® 2019 is out now, showcasing 1,000 of the world’s best universities in 85 countries, based on a methodology which assesses each university on six metrics, including its reputation among academics and employers.
Read on as we count down to discover this year’s top 10 or watch the video below.
10. UCL (University College London)
Down three spots but nonetheless included among the 10 best universities in the world, the UK’s UCL earns its best score in the academic reputation indicator, and also achieves a strong score for its proportion of international students, making it a diverse place to study.
9. University of Chicago
The US’ University of Chicago retains its position of ninth in the world in 2019, with a particularly high score for its reputation among academics.
8. Imperial College London
Imperial is ranked eighth in the world this year and is now London’s highest-ranked university. Like UCL, it boasts an excellent score for the international students indicator, meaning you’ll be in good company if you study at either university as an international student.
7. ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology)
Switzerland’s ETH Zurich is the highest-ranked university in continental Europe and climbed three places in this year’s ranking, with its best score for citations per faculty member, a measure of research impact.
6. University of Cambridge
The University of Cambridge slips one place in this year’s ranking but does achieve higher scores than rival Oxford for its reputations among academics and employers, ranked second in the world for both after Harvard.
5. University of Oxford
The 2019 results see Oxford overtake Cambridge in our list of the world’s best universities, climbing one place to rank fifth in the world and first out of the UK’s 76 entries, with top-10 scores for its academic and employer reputations as well as its faculty/student ratio.
4. California Institute of Technology (Caltech)
The smallest university in the top 10, Caltech retains its position of fourth in the world this year. Students benefit from an excellent student/faculty ratio, and Caltech also beats rival MIT in the citations per faculty member indicator, for which it’s ranked fifth in the world.
3. Harvard University
Harvard continues to rank third in the world as of the 2019 results but remains first in the world for both employer and academic reputation.
2. Stanford University
Also retaining its position from last year is Stanford, which achieves its best scores for its reputation among academics and employers (fifth for both).
1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
And finally, MIT appears to be unbeatable as the world’s highest-ranked university, holding on to the top spot for a record seventh year in a row this year. MIT also gets its highest scores for its reputations with academics and employers, at third and fourth respectively.

Top Universities in the World 2018
Updated June 24, 2019 Updated June 24, 2019
Click here to discover the top universities in the world in 2020.
It’s here. Nearly 1,000 universities from 84 destinations around the world are included in the QS World University Rankings® 2018, providing you with the only resource you need to refer to when deciding which universities to apply to. If you really want to be among the best of the best, these are the ten universities you should attend.
1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
It’s six years in a row at the top for MIT, with the US university continuing to show everyone else how its done. At the heart of its incredible record in our rankings is an extremely strong reputation among both fellow academics and employers, as well as the fact MIT is responsible for an impressive number of academic citations per faculty.
2. Stanford University
There’s no change at number two either, with the Silicon Valley-based Stanford University continuing to hold off the challenge from Harvard. Stanford goes toe-to-toe with MIT in multiple of the indicators used to compile the rankings, but loses ground because of the university’s low international student ratio.
3. Harvard University
Having been second two years ago, Harvard is now cemented in third place in the rankings. The US university can at least take comfort from the fact it’s ranked best in the world for its reputation among academics surveyed for this ranking, a title it retains from previous years.
4. California Institute of Technology (Caltech)
Our first mover and shaker in the top 10 is Caltech, which rises one place from last year. At the heart of this improvement is a particularly good student to faculty ratio and an impressive number of citations produced per faculty.
5. University of Cambridge
Finally! After a clean sweep for the US in the top four, we eventually reach a university from another country. Cambridge was fourth last year so won’t be entirely happy with their slip down the ladder. It’s not all bad news though: the UK university is ranked best in the world for employer reputation and can at least enjoy bragging rights over a certain rival. Speaking of which…
6. University of Oxford
Still in sixth and still behind their arch-rivals Cambridge, the University of Oxford still has some ground to make up if they want to be the best in Britain. It does out-perform Cambridge in its ratio of international students and international faculty though, so maybe they can brag about that for the next year?
7. UCL (University College London)
Three UK universities in a row and it’s another non-mover from last year, suggesting fears British universities would suffer because of Brexit may have been overblown (for now). UCL has one of the most internationally diverse student bodies in the world.
8. Imperial College London
Climbing up the rankings one place is another London university, Imperial. The university is particularly well-regarded for its scientific and technical teaching, as well as its business school.
9. University of Chicago
It’s back to the US for ninth-placed University of Chicago, an improvement of one place from last year’s ranking. The university enjoys a particularly strong score for its reputation among academics.
10. ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology)

The 10 Best Universities in the World
Career and Entrepreneurship Expert
Choosing a university is a difficult process. Aside from the short-term factors that you need to take into account, such as the reputation of the faculty, the quality of the course and the location of the campus, there’s also the long game to consider. After all, where you decide to study after leaving school can end up having a significant impact on your career prospects.
Therefore, it’s important to do your research. Uni and college tables can often give you a clear indication of which institutions are the best (although, of course, it’s worth remembering that this isn’t the only indication of suitability). To help you out, we’ve compiled a list from the latest QS World University Rankings in order to give you a definitive idea of the top 10.
So, if you’re looking to kick off your education – and your career – in the best possible way, why not think big and aim high? These are the 10 best universities in the world.
10. University College London (UCL)
Location: London, England
UCL was founded in 1826 and is marked as the first university in England to welcome women to university education. It was also the only university to accept students of all religions and social backgrounds before all other institutions in the country. UCL currently has over 18,000 students from around the world and it boasts 29 Nobel Prize winners in every decade since the Prize was launched.
UCL is highly reputable for its excellence in research – it was rated the top UK university for research strength in the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) and it is there where a professor by the name of Sir William Ramsay won the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1904 for his discovery of noble gases. UCL has 11 academic divisions with several of them positioned in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, including the UCL Institute of Education (1st) and archaeology (3rd).
9. University of Chicago
Location: Chicago, Illinois, US
A private research university founded in 1890, the University of Chicago has long maintained a reputation for academic excellence across a variety of disciplines, with 100 Nobel laureates, 27 Pulitzer Prize winners and countless domestic and international state officials among its alumni.
The Booth School of Business – one of the top business schools in the world – is part of the University of Chicago, while the University’s internal publishing house is the largest university press in the US. The Barack Obama Presidential Center, which will house several libraries, will also become a part of the college upon its completion in 2021.
8. Imperial College London
Location: London, UK
With a sole focus on science, engineering, medicine and business, Imperial College London is one of the most unique institutions in the country. Students at this university are dubbed ‘world-class researcher’” who focus on addressing global challenges through practical research. Hundreds of students receive hands-on research opportunities at the university’s many research centres as well as in different countries during the summer break at global universities like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US and Seoul National University in South Korea.
Since its establishment in 1907, Imperial College London has bragged more than 12 Nobel Prize winners, including Scottish scientist Sir Alexander Fleming, who famously discovered penicillin. The university also has numerous prestigious fellowships with the likes of the Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Academy of Medical Sciences.
7. University of Cambridge
Location: Cambridge, England
Although it doesn’t boast as much influence politically as its great rival, the University of Oxford (just the 15 Prime Ministers, in comparison), Cambridge graduates have been responsible for an incredible 120 Nobel Prizes, while its scientific alumni include such important figures as Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin and Stephen Hawking.
The university was founded by Oxford academics in the early 13th Century. It hosts a number of separate colleges (31 in all), while the university’s Footlights group is well known, too, having launched the careers of many British comedy actors such as Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie and John Cleese.
6. ETH Zurich
Location: Zurich, Switzerland
The only top 10 entry outside of Britain or the US, the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich – otherwise known as the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich or, more simply, ETH Zurich – is a STEM-focused institution noted particularly for its contributions to physics and chemistry. Indeed, since its founding in 1855, 21 Nobel laureates – including none other than Albert Einstein himself – have spent time at ETH.
Undergraduate courses are taught in German (although English-taught postgraduate opportunities are available), while a second more rural campus – Science City – was constructed to celebrate the university’s 150th anniversary in 2005. The school is also known for the prestigious Polyball event, a traditional ball dating back to the 1880s in which over 10,000 people annually take part.
5. University of Oxford
Location: Oxford, England
As the oldest university in the English-speaking world (there is evidence of teaching as far back as the 11th Century), the University of Oxford boasts a history and influence in the UK that is quite remarkable. This includes 71 Nobel Prizes, 160 Olympic medals and 6 Turing Awards, while 27 British Prime Ministers (as well as numerous international heads of state) have received their education there.
Split into 38 member-colleges, each of which maintains its own unique traditions and culture, Oxford is known for its small teaching groups and tutorial-style of learning. It also features several prominent clubs and societies, including the Oxford Union (which regularly features world-famous speakers) and the notorious Bullingdon Club, a society similar in structure and influence to the Skull and Bones at the US’s Yale University. In addition, the university also boasts the world’s largest university press, as well as the world’s oldest university museum.
4. California Institute of Technology
Location: Pasadena, California, US
Founded in 1891, the California Institute of Technology – or Caltech, as it is often known – is a small but hugely influential research university, particularly within the fields of engineering and natural science. Indeed, the school currently boasts 74 Nobel laureates, while alumni have also contributed heavily to NASA missions and defence research projects. An unusually large amount of Caltech graduates also go on to earn PhDs.
The school shares a famous rivalry with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology while, in recent years, has enjoyed a boost in profile through the television sitcom The Big Bang Theory, where many of the show’s main characters are fictionally employed.
3. Harvard University
Location: Cambridge, Massachusetts, US
The oldest educational institution in the US (the college was founded in 1636), Harvard is a byword for academic excellence and remains one of the most influential universities in the world. Alongside 8 former US Presidents, Harvard has also graduated a world-record 160 Nobel laureates, 14 Turing Award winners and 50 Pulitzer Prize recipients, as well as collectively amassing 10 Academy Awards and 108 Olympic medals. It’s also helped make a lot of people rich, too, with 188 living billionaires among its alumni.
It’s not just its students that set Harvard apart, either. While the school has pioneered numerous educational methods and processes that have been adopted or imitated by thousands of universities across the globe, its wider cultural influence has also been felt elsewhere. Many of the fundamental rule changes in American Football were made at Harvard, for example, while Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg – two former attendees – have revolutionised the technological world.
2. Stanford University
Location: Palo Alto, California, US
Established in 1891, Leland Stanford Junior University – or simply Stanford, as it is much more commonly known – is one of the wealthiest research universities in the world and, given its close proximity to and links with Silicon Valley, one of the most influential. To date, its alumni has amassed 83 Nobel Prizes, 28 Turing Awards (a record) and 270 Olympic medals, as well as produced 17 astronauts and 30 living billionaires.
Companies that have close links with Stanford include Google (which started life as a research project for PhD students Larry Page and Sergey Brin), Cisco (whose founders Leonard Bosack and Sandy Lerner were employed by Stanford while developing the company’s hardware), and Hewlett-Packard (whose founders, Bill Hewlett and David Packard, met while at the university). The school has also been responsible for some of the most ground-breaking discoveries in computer science history, as well as produced important research in the natural sciences.
1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
Location: Cambridge, Massachusetts, US
Founded in 1861 and located just across town from Harvard, MIT is a hugely important research university that has contributed heavily to some of the most important scientific achievements of the last 100 years. Its alumni contain 97 Nobel laureates, 26 Turing Award winners and 41 astronauts, while the university’s strong entrepreneurial culture has also resulted in the formation of some of the world’s best companies.
Unlike many other institutions, MIT does not award honorary degrees or athletic scholarships, while students are renowned for their elaborate pranks and ‘hacks’, many of which are the result of the aforementioned rivalry with Caltech. There are also numerous clubs, societies and traditions within the university, some of which host high-profile programming and robotics competitions.
Of course, as mentioned previously, just because a particular school has a good reputation, it doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily the best option; there are countless things to consider when applying to university, after all.
But it’s also undeniable that attaining a degree from the universities on this list can be absolutely life-changing for your student life, career prospects and your potential network. If you can get the grades – and afford the tuition – then you should certainly consider them as potential study destinations.
Are you surprised to see some of the entries on the list of the best universities in the world or shocked others didn’t make the cut? Let us know in the comments section below!

100 Best Universities in the World Today
Ranking Guidelines
We partnered with Academic Influence to determine the best universities across the globe. Our data-driven approach uses machine learning and search algorithms to identify institutions with the most influential faculty, administrators, and alumni across departments and degree programs. Our methodology examines each university’s research output and impact on society to determine the most influential — and important — institutions in the world today.
Here at TheBestSchools.org, we take the trust and welfare of our readers very seriously. When making our school and program rankings, our top priority is ensuring that our readers get accurate, unbiased information that can help them make informed decisions about online education. That’s why we’ve developed a rigorous ranking methodology that keeps the needs of our readers front and center.
Our proprietary, multi-criteria ranking algorithm analyzes key data indicators — as collected by the federal government — for each school or program. What data we use depends on the focus of each specific ranking, but in all cases, our ranking methodology is impartial: Schools cannot buy better rankings at TBS.
While specific criteria under consideration can vary by ranking, there are a few data points that we value most highly. They are affordability, academic quality, and online enrollment. Below, we break down our algorithm to help you understand what you’re getting when you use one of our rankings.
Data Sources
The data used in TBS rankings comes primarily from the federal government, and much of it is provided by the schools themselves. We aggregate and analyze this data to build our rankings.
The Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) is our primary source. Its data comes from annual surveys conducted by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Every college, university, or technical school with access to federal financial aid must participate in these surveys, which include questions about enrollment, graduation rates, finances, and faculty qualifications. This is publicly available data, which you can access yourself through the College Navigator.
Additionally, because we value a personal touch and the professional experience of our staff and Academic Advisory Board, we vet all results and adjust rankings as necessary based on our collected knowledge of schools and degree programs. Depending on the ranking, we may obtain additional input from AcademicInfluence.com, subject matter experts, prior TBS ranking lists, or other sources we deem relevant to a particular ranking.
Breakdown of Our Rankings Methodology
About Our Ranking Factors
Here at TBS, we value what you value: quality education, affordability, and the accessibility of online education. These factors guide all of our program rankings.
Each of these factors are further broken down into weighted subfactors. For example, retention rates are weighted more heavily than availability of program options because they are a better indicator of student success.
We chose the following factors for our rankings because of their influence on learning experiences and graduate outcomes. However, students should always balance our rankings against their personal priorities. For instance, a learner who needs a fully online program may prioritize online flexibility more than our rankings do. Our rankings are designed to help you make a decision — not to make a decision for you.
In all our school rankings and recommendations, we work for objectivity and balance. We carefully research and compile each ranking list, and as stated in our advertising disclosure, we do NOT permit financial incentives to influence rankings. Our articles never promote or disregard a school for financial gain.
If you have questions about our ranking methodology, please feel free to connect with our staff through contact page.
We thank you for your readership and trust.

1. Harvard University
Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.
2. University of Cambridge
Cambridge, England, U.K.
As the seventh-oldest university in the world, Cambridge is an ancient school steeped in tradition dating back to 1209. It is but small exaggeration to say the history of Western science is built on a cornerstone called Cambridge. The long list of great scientists, mathematicians, and logicians who either studied or taught there (or both) includes Isaac Newton, Augustus De Morgan, Charles Darwin, Charles Babbage, James Clerk Maxwell, J.J. Thomson, Ernest Rutherford, Bertrand Russell, Alfred North Whitehead, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, G.H. Hardy, Srinivasa Ramanujan, Alan Turing, Francis Crick, James D. Watson, Rosalind Franklin, and Stephen Hawking, among many others. Whether in fundamental physics, mathematical logic, number theory, astrophysics, the theory of computation, or structural chemistry and biology, Cambridge has been at the forefront of humanity’s quest for truth longer than most nations have existed. Nevertheless, its great achievements have not been restricted to the sciences. Numerous towering intellects in the humanities such as Erasmus of Rotterdam, William Tyndale, Francis Bacon, John Milton, Lord Byron, William Wordsworth, Ludwig Wittgenstein, John Maynard Keynes, C.S. Lewis, Sylvia Plath, and Ted Hughes all studied or taught here. But despite the many memories that tread past its imposing Gothic architecture, Cambridge does not live in the past. Cambridge remains one of the world’s elite research institutions, with only Oxford to rival it in the U.K. and only a handful of American schools able to do so from overseas. Its over 18,000 students represent more than 135 countries and its faculty have earned over 80 Nobel Prizes.

4. University of Oxford
Oxford, England, U.K.
Oxford University traces its origins back to the thirteenth century. Like the other great medieval universities, it was founded by Catholic clerics who espoused a philosophy that combined Christian teachings with the doctrines of Plato, Aristotle, and other ancient and medieval thinkers, which came to be known as the “philosophy of the Schools”, or “Scholasticism.” However, Oxford evolved with the times, surviving down through the centuries the manifold changes wrought by the Renaissance, the Reformation, the Scientific Revolution, and the Enlightenment, to grow into one of the contemporary world’s most impressive centers of learning. Today, just as 800 years ago, Oxford’s name is synonymous with knowledge and learning. Its high reputation is well earned, as is evidenced (among other things) by the fact that the school runs the world’s largest — and many would say, most prestigious — academic press, with offices in over 50 countries. One in five people who learn English worldwide do so with Oxford University Press materials. This international appeal explains why almost 40 percent of the student body comes from outside the U.K.. Over 17,200 people applied for 3,200 undergraduate places in 2014. But despite many hundreds of students willing to pay tuition, and centuries of accumulated assets, the school’s highest source of income continues to be research grants and contracts. Oxford’s academic community includes 80 Fellows of the Royal Society and 100 Fellows of the British Academy.

7. University of Paris (Sorbonne)
Today, the University of Paris is a network of universities spread across the historic City of Lights. The nucleus of this network dates to the twelfth century, but the modern division into 11 main campuses dates from the reorganization which occurred in 1970 in the wake of “the events of ’68.” The word “Sorbonne” has long been used in a loose sense as a synonym for the University of Paris as a whole, but also, and more correctly, in a stricter sense for the campus located on the original site of the university in the Latin Quarter. Beginning in 2018, some consolidation of this mammoth system will begin to occur, notably the reunification of Paris-Sorbonne University (specializing in the humanities) and Pierre et Marie Curie University (science and medicine). The reorganized system will once again be officially known as Sorbonne Universities. Other notable entities comprising this grand alliance of schools include the following: the technological institute UTC; the medical school INSERM; the performing arts school PSPBB; the education school CIEP; the business school INSEAD; and the highly prestigious think tank, CNRS (Centre national de la recherche scientifique). CNRS is the world’s top producer of scientific research papers; all by itself this one branch of the Sorbonne has produced 20 Nobel Prize laureates and 12 Fields Medalists.
8. University of Chicago
Chicago, Illinois, U.S.
9. University of Michigan
Ann Arbor, Michigan, U.S.
With 50,000 students and 5,500 faculty spread over three campuses, the University of Michigan is an extremely large research university with the expansive alumni networks that such numbers grant. Students have 17 distinct schools and colleges, roughly 600 majors, over 600 student organizations, and a staggering 350 concerts and recitals annually to choose from. The pleasant college town of Ann Arbor was listed as the number one college town in 2010 by Forbes Magazine. The University faculty include Pulitzer, Guggenheim, MacArthur, and Emmy recipients. The school’s alumni have produced 14 Nobel Prize winners and one Fields Medalist. Michigan also runs one of the world’s largest healthcare facilities, gives its students first-class computer access, and utilizes a library with over 13 million volumes. It is little wonder why the school attracts students from all 50 states and over 100 countries. Almost half of the student body graduated in the top five percent of their class, and two thirds graduated in the top 10. Michigan puts more students into medical school than any other school in America

13. University of Edinburgh
Founded in 1583, the University of Edinburgh is one of the oldest schools in the English-speaking world. Its list of historic luminaries includes Adam Smith, David Hume, Charles Darwin, James Clerk Maxwell, and Alexander Graham Bell. The school has also produced heads of state for Malawi, Tanzania, Syria, South Korea, Nicaragua, Canada, and, of course, the United Kingdom. Edinburgh scientists cloned Dolly the sheep (the first cloned mammal). Peter Higgs created the Higgs Boson theory here. This university created the first genetically engineered hepatitis B vaccine, and helped design the first industrial assembly robot. Students can choose from among 500 degree programs spread throughout 100 disciplines. Edinburgh has the largest proportion of international students of any school in Scotland (two-thirds of the world’s nations are represented in the study body), as well as many foreign exchange programs. Students can enjoy all these opportunities right in the middle of Scotland’s beautiful capital. The school now has a £392 million endowment and a £905.8 million operating budget.
14. Cornell University
Ithaca, New York, U.S.
Cornell University is a sprawling city of science that almost seems out of place amidst the rolling upstate New York countryside surrounding the village of Ithaca (town pop. approx. 10,000; gown pop. about twice that). Typically, schools numbering in the tens of thousands are integrated into much larger cities. Thus, Cornell in many ways has both the character of a quaint college nestled in the woods and the endless opportunity characteristic of urban centers. But Cornell is not limited by its beautiful campus. It runs one of the nation’s leading medical schools in New York City. It is also among the most active schools in seeking out international connections. In 2001 it started the first American medical school outside the United States, in Qatar, and continues to develop strong ties with China, India, and Singapore. Cornell is building itself into a transnational hub of intellectual inquiry. It has also developed multiple interdisciplinary research centers in nanotechnology, biotechnology, genomics, and supercomputing. Moreover, the university was the first to build entire Colleges for hotel administration, labor relations, and veterinary medicine.

16. Humboldt University of Berlin
Humboldt University of Berlin is the oldest of Berlin’s four universities. Founded in 1810 by Wilhelm von Humboldt, it was the first university to emphasize the unity of research and teaching in addition to the value of research without restrictions. During the Cold War, the university split into the original university in East Berlin and a sister administration called the Free University of Berlin in West Berlin. Today, the two are still linked by a shared medical school. Humboldt prioritizes research in several disciplines and collaborates with other faculties through Integrative Research Institutes and Interdisciplinary Centres. The university has a long history as the preeminent university for the natural sciences. Today, in addition to natural sciences, Humboldt University is also considered one of the finest universities in the world for its 189 disciplines, including the humanities, social sciences, cultural studies, mathematics, medicine, and agricultural sciences.

19. Johns Hopkins University
Many of the schools in this ranking were founded amid humble ambitions; they may have begun as small colleges or places aimed primarily at religious instruction. In contrast, from its very inception its founders wanted Johns Hopkins to be at the forefront of scientific discovery. That is one reason why the school has blossomed into the elite vanguard of research that it now is. Located in Baltimore, the university operates what is widely regarded as the leading medical school in the world, and has received more extramural National Institutes of Health (NIH) awards than any other medical school. This is also why it receives more federal research funds than any competitor. But Johns Hopkins is much more than just a medical school. The university at large also receives more federal research and development funds than any other school, which helps further its prestigious School of Advanced International Studies, Carey Business School, and Whiting School of Engineering. The faculty include 51 American Academy of Arts and Sciences fellows, 61 Institute of Medicine Members, 28 National Academy of Science members, and four Nobel Prize winners.

22. University of Vienna
Founded in 1365 by Rudolph IV, Duke of Austria, the University of Vienna is one of the oldest universities in the world, and one of the most respected among the German-speaking peoples. Over its six-and-a-half-century existence, it has grown large enough to serve 94,000 students, about a third of whom are international students from over 140 different nations. It offers 174 different degree programs and about 40 continuing education programs. The university also benefits from its location: It is spread across 70 different venues intertwined throughout the Austrian capital. The school has produced 15 Nobel Prizes and maintains a library that houses well over seven million volumes. Not surprisingly, the University of Vienna is the largest university in Austria. Famous alumni and professors include Protestant reformer Huldrych Zwingli; physicists Ernst Mach, Ludwig Boltzmann, Paul Ehrenfest, Erwin Schrödinger, and Lise Meitner; philosophers Franz Brentano, Edmund Husserl, Alexius Meinong, and the “Vienna Circle” (Moritz Schlick, Rudolph Carnap, Otto Neurath, and Karl Popper, among others); mathematician Kurt Gödel; psychologists Sigmund Freud and Wilhelm Reich; writers Adalbert Stifter, Stefan Zweig, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, and Arthur Schnitzler; composer Gustav Mahler; and the economists now known as the “Austrian School of Economics” (principally Carl Menger, Eugen von Böhm-Bawerk, Friedrich von Wieser, Ludwig von Mises, and Friedrich A. Hayek), as well as Joseph Schumpeter.
23. University of Washington
Seattle, Washington, U.S.
24. Duke University
Durham, North Carolina, U.S.
Often called the Ivy League of the South, Duke University has some 14,600 students who enjoy a first-class education in the city of Durham, North Carolina, one of the three vertices of that state’s “research triangle” (the other two being the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University in Raleigh). Duke is especially well known for its two most prestigious professional programs: the first is Duke’s medical program, which includes Duke University Health System, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and Duke Hospital, all which work in partnership; the second is its well-rated law school, which consistently ranks among the top 10 in the country, and has never dropped out of the prestigious top 14. Given these two areas of expertise, it is not surprising that Duke runs one of the world’s most sought-after dual JD/MD programs. The school also operates Duke University Press, which publishes about 120 new books each year and maintains 30 academic journals. Duke also preserves 700 acres of pristine woods called Duke Forest, which serves as a natural laboratory.

26. King’s College London
London, England, U.K.
Historically, King’s College London (King’s, or KCL) stood at the forefront of extending higher education to women, as well as to men from the lower social and economic classes. The school has developed and merged with several other respected academic institutions, including the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals (the latter of which created the world’s first professional school for nursing), Chelsea College, Queen Elizabeth College, and the Institute of Psychiatry. Today, this unified conglomerate forms a first-class research university with an endowment exceeding £154 million. KCL is connected to 12 Nobel Prizes. It was here that the great Romantic poet John Keats received his training, the civil rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu began his fight against apartheid, and the distinguished Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell conducted his research proving that light, electricity, and magnetism are all different aspects of the same phenomenon.

28. University College London
London, England, U.K.
With almost 39,000 students from over 150 countries, University College London (UCL) is the third-largest school in the U.K., and its more than 20,000 graduate students give it the largest collection of such students in the country. Founded in 1826, it is also the third-oldest U.K. school. It was founded on the principles of social philosopher Jeremy Bentham, one of the principal creators of modern Utilitarianism. Not surprisingly, it became the first university to admit women on an equal basis with men, in 1878. It was also the first university in Britain to welcome students of any religious creed. UCL is affiliated with 30 Nobel Prizes — making it the leading school in that category within the University of London network of schools — as well as three Fields Medals. Famous alumni include five-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee, Mohandas K. (“Mahatma”) Gandhi, and co-discoverer of the double-helix structure of DNA, Francis Crick. University College London also operates campuses in the countries of Qatar and Australia.
29. London School of Economics
London, England, U.K.
The London School of Economics and Political Science (to give its full name) is the U.K.’s only social science — based university. As its name suggests, the school produces substantial research related to money and society. It has an entire department dedicated to the specialist field of economic history and runs many research centers such as the Centre for Climate Change Economics and Policy, the International Growth Centre, the Financial Markets Group, and the Centre for Analysis of Social Exclusion. The university is exceptionally cosmopolitan with over 100 languages spoken on campus, 155 nations represented, and over 70 percent international students (the highest in Britain), thus making it arguably the most diverse school in the world. Furthermore, the London School of Economics has access to the vibrant city lifestyle and numerous neighboring schools surrounding it. The school was founded in 1895 and now serves well over 10,000 students and employs almost 1,700 academic staff.

While the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) continues to hold first place in our rankings for a record-breaking eighth consecutive year, the overall picture for US universities is concerning. Of the 157 universities from the United States to be included this year, 117 of them have fallen in rank since last year.
In total, 80 percent of US universities and 61 percent of UK universities have seen their score for international student ratio drop this year, with the political situation in both countries likely to be a factor in deterring international applicants.
By contrast, Australian universities are becoming increasingly international. Elsewhere in the world, Chinese universities are continuing to perform well and are increasingly receiving high scores for their research impact. Eight of the world’s top 100 universities for research impact are now Chinese, up from five last year.

How Universities Are Ranked – The Methodology
Two primary level indicators – Economics and Social Affairs, were used to rank the universities in categories. Then 7 criteria – Innovation; Research; Publications; Facilities; Teaching; Employability; and Social Responsibility, were used to measure each university’s strengthens within the two primary indicators.
Below is the methodology indicator’s criteria scoring scale system:
Economic Indicators
Social Affairs Indicators
The Scoring Point System
To calculate each university’s score, two tables were created for both indicators – Economic and Social Affairs-will their criteria base score being tallied from a scale set of five values: 5-Excellent, 4- Very Good, 3-Good, 2-Average and 1-Poor.
Each criteria value point is given a score based on data collected by our research team, and then calculated for a mean average for the indicator, and then combined with the second indicator to arrive at total, which is divided for the final average score.
Data Collection
Statistical data were collected from Institutions database and educational publications for use in the criteria value scores.
The results from each universities score were then matched with the results from the world’s top 4 international higher education survey rankings – US News & World Report (Best Global Universities), The Times Higher Education (World Reputation Rankings), QS Top Universities (World University Rankings), and Center for World University Rankings, to selected this year’s final 20 universities.

The QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017, released today, showcases just over 900 of the top universities in the world. If you consider that there are an estimated 20,000 universities worldwide in total, it’s clear that ranking among the top 900 is quite an achievement – while those in the top 100 are truly part of a global elite. Here’s an overview of the very top universities in the world this year…
1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
Leading the list for the fifth consecutive year, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is proving difficult to shift from the top spot, thanks to its strong international reputation, highly influential research, and healthy faculty/student ratio.
2. Stanford University
Based in Silicon Valley, Stanford University climbs one place in the ranking this year, overtaking Harvard in the process. It scores well across all of the indicators used in the ranking, particularly the global reputation surveys of academics and employers.
3. Harvard University
It may no longer be at the top of the ranking (which it led between 2004 and 2009), but Harvard University remains one of the world’s most-respected institutions across a broad range of subject areas – and in fact it’s still number one in both of the reputation surveys.
4. University of Cambridge
5. California Institute of Technology (Caltech)
6. University of Oxford
7. UCL (University College London)
The UK’s third representative, UCL claims to be “London’s Global University” – and this assertion is well-founded. It has one of the most international student bodies amongst the top universities in the world, as well as being highly rated by both academics and employers.
8. ETH Zurich
The highest-ranked institution from outside of the US and UK, Switzerland’s ETH Zurich has been steadily climbing the table – this year improving its position by one. Its strongest scores are for international diversity of faculty and research impact, reflecting its status as a global research powerhouse.
9. Imperial College London
10. University of Chicago

Out Now: QS World University Rankings 2019
Updated June 30, 2020 Updated June 30, 2020
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has made history, topping the QS World University Rankings for the seventh consecutive year. No other university has managed such a long run at the top.
This is just one of several eye-catching stories and insights in this year’s ranking, which features 1,000 of the world’s finest universities. Watch the video below for more information about this year’s top 10.
US universities continue to dominate
As you can see from the above video, MIT isn’t the only institution from the US to continue to enjoy a position at the top of the table. Stanford University, Harvard University and California Institute of Technology (Caltech) all retain their positions at second, third and fourth in the world respectively.
More US universities have risen than fallen in this year’s ranking, with Yale University, Columbia University and the University of Michigan all climbing at least one place in the world’s top 20.
For more information about the top universities in the US, watch the video below.
Stability for top UK universities
After a couple of rocky years for UK universities, the 2019 ranking is one of stability. As with the US, the UK sees more universities climb than fall, although two of the British universities included in the top 10 have slipped since last year.
One of those is the University of Cambridge, which has been overtaken in the top five by its arch-rival the University of Oxford. Professor Louise Richardson, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford, was delighted by Oxford’s rise in the rankings this year. She said: “We owe this result to the talent and commitment of our academic staff and to our network of research collaborators across the continent and across the Globe.
“We are particularly proud to have secured the top spot in Europe and very much hope that we will be able to maintain this position as the UK withdraws from the European Union.”
Oxford has recently come under fire after it was revealed that eight of its 29 colleges accepted fewer than three black students in the last three years. Labour MP David Lammy said: “This is social apartheid and it is utterly unrepresentative of life in modern Britain.”
Cambridge has faced similar criticisms, with six of its 29 undergraduate colleges admitting fewer than 10 black British or mixed-race students between 2012 and 2016.

An empty top 20 for Australia
Last year, the Australian National University broke into the global top 20 to become the only institution from Down Under in the top 20. Unfortunately, the good times didn’t last long, with ANU slipping four places this year. It’s not all bad news though, as five of the seven Australian universities to feature within the top 100 have either improved or maintained their position since last year. Learn more in the video below.
Toronto pulls clear in Canada
Canada continues to be an attractive alternative to studying in the US, but there are no big gains made by Canadian universities this year. The University of Toronto continues to be the highest-ranked institution in the country, five places higher than McGill University. The gap between the two has widened since last year by four places. Although there are now three Canadian universities in the global top 50, one more than last year, there aren’t any other institutions from the country in the top 100, as the University of Alberta has dropped from joint 90 th to 109 th this year.

Save some money and study in Germany
German universities may be some way from competing with the best in continental Europe, with none of the country’s institutions cracking the top 50 this year, but the promise of free tuition at nearly all of the country’s top universities means there’ll always be interest from international students. Technische Universität München remains the best university in the country.

Revealed: Best Universities In The World For 2020
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has been ranked No. 1 in the world in the Top 500 Global Universities, according to the CEOWORLD magazine University Ranking 2020, compared to last year when it was placed at second. The CEOWORLD magazine University Rankings 2020 includes 500 universities across 53 countries. Founded in 1861 in response to the increasing industrialization of the United States, Massachusetts Institute of Technology adopted a European polytechnic university model and stressed laboratory instruction in applied science and engineering. It has since played a key role in the development of many aspects of modern science, engineering, mathematics, and technology, and is widely known for its innovation and academic strength.
The top 10 on the list include MIT, Stanford, Cambridge, Harvard, Oxford, Caltech, Princeton, UChicago, ETH Zurich – Switzerland, and the University College London. Six U.S. universities are among the top 10 in the world.
The University of California – Los Angeles took the No. 11 spot, followed by the University of California – Berkeley (No.12) and Imperial College London (No.13). Meanwhile, Johns Hopkins University ranked No. 14 in the CEOWORLD magazine’s ranking of the best universities in the world for 2020.
Cornell University University came in fifteenth place, followed by the University of Pennsylvania (sixteenth), Columbia University (seventeenth), Duke University (eighteenth), and Yale University, ranked nineteenth.
Out of 500 universities in the world for 2020, the University of California – San Francisco ranked No. 20th. The CEOWORLD magazine Best Global Universities Ranking measures the quality of education, perceived global influence, recruiters’ responses, employers’ feedback, job placement rate, admission eligibility, specialization, and academic reputation, ranking 500 institutions across 54 countries.
Best Universities In The World For 2020
General Methodology on the CEOWORLD magazine’s University Ranking 2020. The rankings are based on seven major metrics of quality and reputation. Overall Score (100%) is the sum of:
1. Perceived Global Influence (20%)
2. Recruiters Responses (20%)
3. Employers Feedback (10%)
4. Job Placement Rate (10%)
5. Admission Eligibility (10%)
6. Specialization (10%)
7. Academic Reputation (20%)
To establish our list, we collected information and statistics from publicly available sources, research, and survey. The ranking measures the quality of education, job placements of graduates, recruiters response, employers feedback, without relying on institution data submissions.
Survey disclosure: How they made their choices?
Our respondents were sent a long list of more than 700 universities drawn from leagues on every continent and asked one simple question: which universities are the best in the world in 2020?
We asked our respondents to choose 10 universities each, and rank their selection in order from 1-10, No1 being their choice of the best university in the world for 2020.
The No 1 choice of each respondent was awarded 10pts, No 2 given 9pts, down to 1pt for their No 10 choice. All the votes were added together to give a raw score.
An institution needed to receive votes from at least 500 respondents to qualify for the list.
We are very grateful to our respondents for taking part, and none have been paid for participating in this project.
To allow our respondents the freedom to express their opinions, individual voting records will be anonymized in the full breakdown of scores.
Graduates, industry professionals, employers, and recruiters were asked to rate universities on a scale of 1 “marginal” to 100 “outstanding” or “don’t know.”
However, this is by no means a comprehensive list, while institutions above are the CEOWORLD magazine’s “Best Universities In The World For 2020,” there may be many other universities that offer excellent programs.
* The survey involved respondents from 95 countries and was conducted between August to November 2018.
* This ranking should not be viewed as the most important aspect when choosing a university, and are merely one element to consider.
* The top-ranked university receives 100 points.
* The rankings are the result of a rigorous analytical exercise, incorporating multiple data sources, without relying on university data submissions.
* Detailed survey data and information collected directly from 115,000 individuals, across 7 data points.
* Magazine invited 115,000 Individuals from 95 countries to participate in this year’s invitation-only opinion study.
* Surveys completed by 55,000 graduates; 25,000 recruiters; and 35,000 employers (with 500 or more employees) around the world.
* We analyzed over 700 universities during the data collection process.
* The overall score is numerical scores given to the university based on students, industry professionals, and recruiter feedback — measuring the quality of the university. Total scores are out of 100.
* The margin of sampling error for the full sample of 115,000 respondents is plus or minus 1.2 percentage points. In addition to sampling error, one should bear in mind that as in all survey research, there are possible sources of error—such as coverage, nonresponse, and measurement error——that could affect the results.

From the crisis of plastic in the oceans to gender disparities in pay, the world’s biggest concerns are more and more in the minds of consumers and corporations. And no one understands the importance of tackling these better than universities and students.
But which universities are incorporating these global issues into their governance? And how can we measure the real impact that universities are making on their students and wider communities?
Join the THE Student community and unlock free benefits
Times Higher Education has put together the Impact Rankings to shine a light on those institutions that are working hard to tackle global issues such as gender inequality, quality education for all, climate change, and achieving peaceful societies and economic growth.
To put together the rankings, we mapped how universities around the world are committing to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs are a global call to action to tackle poverty, climate change and inequality.
Universities were invited to submit data on how they were progressing on the SDGs. More than 1,400 universities submitted data this year across the SDGs. You can read more about the methodology here.
This ranking is a crucial resource for students choosing a university because it moves away from assessing universities on their research output and focuses instead on the impact that universities are having on some of the world’s most pressing issues.

Find the Top Universities in the World for Your Subject
Updated March 5, 2016 Updated March 5, 2016
The new edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, released today, highlights the 200 top universities the world for 30 individual subjects. Published annually, the ranking is based on data collected for the overall QS World University Rankings®, broken down to provide insights into the strongest performing institutions in specific subject areas. For the 2014 edition, this meant drawing on 90,000 survey responses, 27 million research paper attributions, and almost 11,000 individually verified programs.
This year, a total of 689 institutions are ranked among the 200 top universities in the world for at least one subject, while 65 make at least one top 10. Like last year, Massachusetts neighbors Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of technology (MIT) emerge as the two clear leaders, accounting for 20 of the 30 number one spots between them – 11 held by Harvard and 9 by MIT.
Top universities for medicine & life sciences
Among the top universities for medicine and life sciences, Harvard shines particularly strong; it ranks as the world’s number one for medicine, pharmacy and pharmacology, psychology and biological sciences. UK universities also have a strong representation in this field; the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge are joined at the top of the rankings tables by London-based institutions King’s, UCL and Imperial, while the Universities of Manchester and Nottingham both feature in the top 10 for pharmacy.
Stanford is also close to the top in all of these subjects, and in general the top 10s are dominated almost entirely by US and UK universities. Exceptions to this are Australia’s Monash University (8 th for pharmacy) and University of Melbourne (10= for psychology), Sweden’s Karolinska Institute (7 th for pharmacy) and Switzerland’s ETH Zurich (10 th for biological sciences).
A rather different set of names appears in the fifth subject included in the life sciences group, agriculture and forestry, which was added to the QS World University Rankings by Subject for the first time last year. This specialized field is dominated at the top by large public US universities, with the notable interruption of the Netherlands’ Wageningen University in second place.

Top universities for engineering & technology
If Harvard rules the medicine and life sciences rankings, then MIT is the undisputed table-topper when it comes to the world’s top universities for engineering and technology subjects; it ranks number one for all five disciplines covered. Also particularly strong here are Stanford University, University of Cambridge, and University of California, Berkeley.
Beyond the US and UK, Switzerland’s ETH Zurich cements its strong position in the technology spectrum, while Asian universities also have a very strong presence among the top universities for engineering and technology. The National University of Singapore makes the top 10 for all five subjects, and Japan’s University of Tokyo also does consistently well. Asian universities account for 10 of the top 30 universities in the rankings for chemical, civil and electrical engineering and eight in mechanical engineering, while Hong Kong alone has three entries in the top 20 for computer science.

Top universities for natural sciences
Next, a look at the top universities in the world for natural sciences, for which the QS World University Rankings by Subject provides six ranking tables: mathematics, physics and astronomy, environmental sciences, Earth and marine sciences, chemistry and materials sciences.
Here, MIT and Harvard once again claim nearly all the top spots, though the public University of California, Berkeley comes first for environmental sciences. Many of the big-name US and UK universities are again strong performers here; Stanford, Berkeley, Oxford and Cambridge all do well across the natural sciences group.
Singapore has a particularly strong showing in materials science, where the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University both make the top 10, with a further five Asian institutions within the top 20. Meanwhile physics sees several strong performances from continental European institutions, with the two Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology both in the top 20, along with Germany’s Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and Technische Universität München.

Top universities for social sciences
The QS World University Rankings by Subject includes rankings tables for eight social sciences subjects: law, sociology, statistics, economics, education, accounting and finance, communication and media studies, and politics and international studies (not all shown in the table below).
Harvard is again the dominant institution in the social sciences, topping the tables for accounting and finance, law, economics, politics and sociology. However, there are also some less familiar names at the top of the tables in this category, with the University of Wisconsin-Madison topping the table for communication and media studies, and the UK’s Institute of Education ranking number one in its specialist subject, education.
The specialist London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) is among the top universities in the world in the social sciences group; LSE is ranked within the global top three for communication and media studies, accounting & finance, economics and politics and international studies.
Top universities for social sciences, 2014
Top universities for arts & humanities
Finally, the QS World University Rankings by Subject provides rankings of the top universities in the world for six arts and humanities subjects: philosophy, modern languages, English language and literature, geography, history and linguistics.
The University of Oxford is the world’s top-performing arts and humanities institution overall, coming top in three of the six rankings, second for two more and fourth for the sixth – and in general, UK universities rank well in these subjects. LSE is again a strong performer, especially in geography – where six of the top 10 spots are claimed by UK institutions. It’s worth noting that dedicated ‘geography’ programs are less common in the US, where the subject is often incorporated into other areas of the humanities and social sciences.
While Oxbridge and the Ivy League somewhat dominate the top of the English language and literature ranking, philosophy throws up a more diverse selection of leaders. New York University (NYU) comes top here, with the University of Pittsburgh and Rutgers also in the top five.
