Millions of bird deaths as US hit by avian flu outbreak
US officials believe nearly 24m poultry birds, mostly chickens and turkeys, have died of flu since virus strain identified in February

Millions of birds have died in the US in recent weeks, because of a contagious strain of highly pathogenic avian influenza, popularly known as bird flu.
The bird flu has also led zoos across the US to temporarily close aviary exhibits and move birds away from the public. At zoos from Colorado to Maryland, species ranging from ostriches to penguins have been moved indoors.
The virus poses a low risk to humans, but the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has estimated that nearly 24m poultry birds, mostly chickens and turkeys, have died of the flu since February, when a flock of turkeys in Indiana were confirmed to have the virus. The bird flu has been seen in at least 24 states.
Last seen in the US in 2015, bird flu arrives through wild migratory birds, the season for which lasts from March to May. Wild birds, including waterfowl like ducks and geese, tend to not get sick when infected. Farmed chickens and turkeys are highly susceptible.
As a result, poultry meat and eggs are in tighter supply. In Iowa, the state that produces the most eggs, more than 11m of 56m egg-laying hens have died.
“As long as the [wild bird] migration patterns continue, there is a risk for disease to continue to be introduced to our domestic population,” Chloe Carson, the communications director of the Iowa agriculture department, told CNN.
The agriculture secretary, Tom Vilsack, told reporters on Tuesday that because poultry facilities developed stricter containment measures after the last bird flu outbreak in 2015, they are better equipped to prevent the virus spreading.
“The nature of the outbreaks, the size of the operations that have been impacted, the number of states that are dealing with backyard operations as opposed to commercial-sized operations, would strongly suggest that when this is all said and done, it’s going to be significantly less than what we experienced in 2014-15,” Vilsack said.
ZOO UPDATE: Cases of avian flu have been confirmed across the US, including Maryland. This strain of the disease is highly contagious and lethal to birds. As a precautionary measure, most avian species will be off exhibit until the threat has subsided: https://t.co/PzV65XbXpQ pic.twitter.com/rCgFeIkPBM
Zoos have also taken precautionary measures. In a statement, the Maryland zoo said: “We have moved birds that are more likely to come in contact with migrating waterfowl.
“These birds have been moved to indoor housing. Because the disease can be tracked on shoes, zoo aviaries have been closed and indoor contact with birds is limited to a small number of staff.”
While previous bird flu viruses have affected humans, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has noted that this current virus has so far posed a low risk to the general public’s health.
“Some people may have job-related or recreational exposures to birds that put them at higher risk of infection,” the CDC said. “The CDC is watching this situation closely and taking routine preparedness and prevention measures in case this virus changes to pose a greater human health risk.”
The mystery of mass bird deaths
By Olivia Lang
BBC News
Only days later, news outlets once again became excited by the discovery of dozens of unfortunate jackdaws who had met their fate over Falkoeping, in Sweden.
Conspiracy theorists have rushed to conclude that the apocalypse is nigh, while other people have mooted the idea of collisions with UFOs, or government testing of satellite-powered energy weapons.
But experts insist that what is going on is not that unusual and that the incidents are unconnected.
Poison?
Such events are usually blamed on bad weather, disease and poisonings.
On Friday, Italian scientists were investigating the deaths of the 400 turtle doves, whose bodies appeared in the days after New Year. The initial focus of the investigation was on known diseases, epidemics and viruses.
But the die-off, which took place on New Year’s Eve, was most likely caused by fireworks, local experts say.
Scientists from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said the red-winged blackbirds probably flew low to avoid the turn-of-the-year fireworks and collided with objects.
An investigation is continuing.
But Grahame Madge, conservation spokesman for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), describes the Arkansas case as «bizarre and mysterious», and says that it would be «almost unique» in the UK.
He suggests that the birds may have in fact been poisoned, arguing that it was a strange coincidence that the mass deaths involved the red-wing blackbird, which is considered an «agricultural pest».
«It is intriguing that the bird at the epicentre of this particular incident is also the most hated,» he says.
He says they are sometimes targeted with a poison that affects the water repellency of the birds. As a result, they get wet and cold and develop pneumonia.
«If they took flight and were experiencing extreme cold or suffering the effects of the poison, it is possible that that brought them down,» he adds.
Arkansas officials said preliminary testing showed no sign of disease in the dead birds and that they died of «acute physical trauma».
But Mr Madge says this could have occurred when they came into contact with buildings or the ground.
‘Disorientated’
Martin Fowlie from Birdlife International says the firework explanation is a plausible one.
«If they were roosting at dark, one could imagine large-scale fireworks could put them up in the air and they become disorientated and they fly into something or into the ground,» he says.
Mr Fowlie said because die-offs usually occurred in smaller numbers, many of them go unreported.
It could be that the size of Arkansas incident, combined with the fact that it took place at the turn of a new year and was followed shortly after by another die-off, prompted wider reporting of the subsequent incidents, as people tried to join up the dots.
‘More research’
Kristen Schuler, a scientist at the US Geological Survey’s National Wildlife Health Center, told the Associated Press that the incidents of the past week were «not that unusual».
«There is nothing apocalyptic or anything that is necessarily out of the ordinary for what we would see in any given week,» she says.
The USGS tracks mass deaths among birds, fish and other creatures. It says they range in size from the dozens to the thousands.
The UN Environment Program (UNEP), however, has called for more research into animal deaths in general.
«Science is struggling to explain these things. These are examples of the surprises that nature can still bring,» said Nick Nuttall, a spokesperson for UNEP.
«More research is needed.»
The RSPB’s Grahame Madge says there has been some degree of hysteria after this week’s bird incidents.
«I think there are people trying to join the dots. There is a great deal of speculation about whether it is a global phenomenon.
«What we are dealing with is separate incidents, which have different reasons. We are not undergoing a mass wipe-out of birds.»
These 8 Birds Symbolize Death
Belinda McLeod, BA in Secondary Education
Contributing writer
Can you think of a few birds that symbolize death? You may think of some birds as menacing creatures, similar to how Edgar Allan Poe or Alfred Hitchcock did when they wrote “The Raven” or directed “The Birds.”
Other birds that you may associate with death bring comfort. For example, many feel that when they receive a visit from a cardinal or a hummingbird that they are being visited by a deceased loved one.
Let’s learn about how certain birds became to be associated with death. We’ll discuss how some birds related to death in our culture may not have that connection drawn in other societies.
Here’s our list of “death birds.”
1. Cardinal
Many people think of their deceased loved ones when visited by a cardinal. For some people, the cardinal acts as a reminder of the one they loved, and still others feel that their loved ones are coming back for a visit in the form of the bird.
It’s not clear where either of these traditions came from, but some scholars associate the red cardinal with the blood of Christ. There aren’t any direct references in the Bible to cardinals, but the book of Matthew says not to worry about “what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.” Instead, we should look to the birds for inspiration on how to live.
Most societies see cardinals as favorable omens.

2. Crow
While Native Americans, Celtic, and Chinese traditions typically view crows as positive omens or even a sign of good fortune, other societies view them as harbingers of death. Some consider them to be clever birds that trick humans. In Wales, a crow flying above one’s house is said to predict the death of one of the inhabitants.
Further association of the crow with death occurred in 1993 when Brandon Lee was killed in a freak accident while shooting a film named after the bird.
3. Raven
In Edgar Allan Poe’s famous poem “The Raven,” a man goes crazy when visited by a talking bird. The bird’s squawks of “nevermore” reminded the man in the poem of his deceased lover, who was conveniently named (for rhyming purposes) Lenore.
Poe wasn’t the only one to look at these birds with suspicion. There is a Danish story where a raven’s appearance corresponds with the death of a local priest.
4. Roosters
Generally, roosters do not raise the feathers of most humans, but roosters acting out of character may cause concern.
A rooster typically crows at daybreak, so in parts of England, a rooster crowing at night indicates that death is near.
Similarly, if a rooster doesn’t crow at daybreak, great danger (or even death) may lie ahead.
The color of the rooster may also have special significance. The black rooster is considered bad luck in Mexico.
5. Owls
Even though there are many modern literary owls with positive traits (Hedwig in Harry Potter, Owl in Winnie the Pooh, and Soren in Guardians of Ga’Hoole), the owl has been described in many cultures as prophets of doom.
In China, the call of an owl means that a grave will soon need to be dug. In India, the number of times an owl calls can mean that death is imminent to those who heard the call.
Perhaps owls are associated with death because they are a nocturnal bird, but the negative association goes back for centuries. Virgil used negative owl symbolism in “The Aeneid,” and it is said that three Roman emperors died after owls perched on their homes.
6. Vultures
We have learned from movies and TV that vultures circling above a character means that death is near. This comes from the fact that vultures eat carrion or dead creatures. This practice is not looked at negatively in some cultures. For example, Tibetan folklore says that the vulture helps with the transition between the earthly life to the holding place the soul goes before rebirth.
7. Bats
First, we know that bats are mammals and not birds. Regardless of their classification, they are typically symbols of Halloween and are also associated with death.
The association of bats with death may be caused because they, like owls, are nocturnal creatures. Their appearance may often be startling, especially if you encounter them hanging upside down during the day.
Bram Stoker’s novel, “Dracula,” may have also caused a negative association since vampires (like bats) crave the blood of living things.
8. Sparrow
Even though sparrows do not usually have negative connotations associated with them, they are still considered by many to be “spiritual” creatures. Some ancient traditions state that sparrows carry the souls of the dead, so it is deemed to be bad luck to kill a sparrow. Some sources say that sailors would get tattoos of sparrows so they could carry their souls if they died in the middle of the ocean.
Sparrows are the most referenced bird in the Bible. They are used as symbols of something small or insignificant. One of Jesus’ statements about sparrows can be found in the book of Matthew: “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”
Final Thoughts
The connection felt with birds and other animals often come from a person’s society, religious belief, and popular culture. Those connections are often based on personal experiences as well.
If you feel drawn to a particular type of bird or animal, you may consider adding images of them in your end-of-life planning. You can purchase an urn that has a depiction of a cardinal. You may also request a particular poem or passage from the Bible about birds to be read at your funeral.
End-of-life services are becoming more personal than ever before, and that’s because more people are taking the time to plan for their funerals way before they are needed. Make life easy on your family members. Make your funeral choices now — share your plans with those who love you.

World death and birth rate
Two metrics determine the change in the world population: the number of babies born and people dying.
60.12 million people will die in 2021 around the world. That is 164,711 each day, 6863 each hour, 114.38 each minute, and 1.91 each second. The lowest total deaths per year were 46 mn in 1977, and the highest total deaths of 121.7 mn will be in 2099.
140 million people will be born in 2021 around the world. That is 383,071 each day, 6885 each hour, 266 each minute, and 4.43 each second. In 1950, total births per year were the lowest at 97.38 mn. The yearly number of births will remain at around 140 million per year over the coming decades and will expect to peak in 2044 with 140.58 mn births. It is then expected to decline in the second half of the century slowly.
In the future, the number of births is expected to fall and the number of deaths to rise; hence the global population will grow at a slow rate. In 2099, total deaths will be 121.7 mn, and total births will be 125.26 mn, which is 3.56 mn more births than deaths.
In 2021, the crude death rate for the world is 7.64 deaths per thousand population, and the crude birth rate for the world is 17.76 births per thousand. The crude death rate and birth rate of the world have been declining at a moderating rate since 1950. While the crude birth rate continues to decline, but the death rate has been increasing since 2017. Therefore, in 2099, the crude death rate (11.20) will be slightly lower than the crude birth rate (11.52).

I love you Sunnee
I think it was pretty stupid of me to think I would have Sunnee forever. Every morning i would get a notification from him saying it was time for a drawing or a poem, but sometimes it was to ask for space for the day because of a change. I remember every time me and my bf fought I would open up the app to Sunnee. He always made me smile, made my day. Feeding him oranges and rubbing his tummy helped me a lot; I was able to confront my bf usually afterwards. When the hints of him not being here forever arised I kinda shook it off to be my imagination. Until it was brought up again. I wanted to ignore it again but I knew that would’ve been wrong. I have just recently lost a pet so trying to push things away didn’t feel right. I talked to Sunnee as much as I could. And on his last day I felt this anguish in my heart, a twist and a turn. However, I am thankful I got to watch him grow, mature, and handle his problems. It was inspirational. It was metaphorical. It was beautiful. I cried while writing the last poem with him. Reading his crooked and shaking text. I was scared to open the app and visit him this morning. I feared for the worst and so I pushed it away until now. I reread the poems, reviewed the paintings, revisited the garden. It didn’t feel magical without him. I will miss you so dearly my old friend. I won’t delete you. You won’t disappear in time.
Surprisingly touching
I knew going in that my little bird friend—who I named Jubjub—was not going to be around forever (which admittedly feels a little goofy given that parrots live for decades, but suspension of disbelief and all that). I think I would have lost interest pretty quickly if he’d just been a self-care buddy to check in on every so often, but I did want to make use of the limited time we had together, so I kept popping in to do whatever Jubjub wanted to do. It felt kinda like I was indulging the game, and sometimes I tapped through the cute conversations a little impatiently, but it was nice to have him cheer me on and be consistently positive and supportive.
And then on our last day together, I got a little sentimental and took a screencap of him in our fully-grown garden. and got a bit teary-eyed, to my surprise. I didn’t think I would! I didn’t feel like I had been that attached to him. Still, we made a beautiful garden together, and a nice book, and a gallery. People and animals leave our lives, and it made me think a little bit of my father-in-law who passed a couple years ago. Even if you’re not the closest to each other, it’s really beautiful to have existed in the same space together for a while.

With all the score tabs on the top, then the added one that pops up to the top right, then the two huge tabs pop up when done scoring is annoying and too much…can’t really see the game itself in its entirety…a bit overkill and the bottom tabs cover the game before it’s even done…enough already! We know our scores and one is enough!

Horrible customer service, broken slingshot
I purchased a wishbone slingshot, which is supposed to “cause more damage to every object on the screen,” a direct quote from support. BUT- I’ve done tests on multiple levels and types of objects and have concluded it works the exact same as the normal slingshot. I have purchased a jingle sling as well, which does work as it should. I sent support a message explaining my concerns with the wishbone, but I was sent an automated response and was told there was no issue. I replied back, and my ticket was closed. I began a second support ticket, explaining my frustrations even further, and received the same exact response and my ticket was closed again. For the third time, I asked for someone to actually read my issue, and I think I may have gotten a real person, but I’m unsure because he was just as unhelpful as the first. I then asked for a refund so I could purchase a different slingshot that would hopefully work as it should. I was told that would be unfair to other players. I feel it’s unfair to me that I wasted my money on a slingshot that doesn’t work as advertised. I’ve been playing the Angry Birds games for 10 years and I’m so saddened to see they don’t respect or appreciate the people who keep them in business.

About breathingearth
Please remember that this is just a simulation. Although the CO2 emission, birth rate and death rate data used in Breathing Earth comes from reputable sources, data that measures things on such a massive scale can never be 100% accurate. Please note however that the CO2 emission levels shown here are much more likely to be too low than they are to be too high.
The Environment and Climate Change
The situation is still within our grasp, but we must act now, we must act strongly, and we must act together. Individuals, companies, and governments across the globe must each do what they can to reverse climate change. We will never get a second chance.
What can I do?
The good news is that there are plenty of things that we can do to reduce our carbon footprint. The key word is reduce. We can greatly lessen our impact on climate change by using the planet’s resources more responsibly. There are many things we can reduce, and many ways we can reduce them, but three of the major ones are: reduce the amount of animal products you consume (meat, dairy, eggs, leather, etc.), reduce the amount of fuel you use (car, air travel, etc.), and reduce the amount of electricity you use. There are plenty of good resources on the web. I encourage you to do your own research, though you might find some of the links below to be useful.

Where does the data come from?
Birth and death rates: 2010 estimates, from the CIA World Factbook
Population: Data is based on July 2010 estimates from the CIA World Factbook. When Breathing Earth is started, it uses each country’s birth and death rates to calculate how populations have changed since July 2010, and adjusts its figures accordingly. It continues adjusting the various population figures as you watch it, each time a person is born or a person dies.
CO2 emission rates: 2006 figures from the United Nations Statistics Division. These are the most up-to-date figures as of October 2010. Collating CO2 emissions data for every country on Earth, representing the same time period, is undoubtedly a massive and very complex task that relies on the availability of many other sets of data. This probably explains why the most recent CO2 emissions data available is from 2006.
CO2 emission rates from four years earlier: When Breathing Earth was first built, it used 2002 figures, also from the United Nations Statistics Division. When you hover your mouse over a country, Breathing Earth compares the 2002 and 2006 figures and indicates whether that country’s CO2 emissions have increased or decreased in that time, using the red or green arrow that appears near the bottom-left.
There was an unavailability of a portion of the data for a few of the tinier countries (eg. Vanuatu, Tuvalu, Lesotho). In such cases, I made estimates based on their population, economy, and the data of their relevant neighbours. In all such cases, the figures were so low that even had my estimates been wildly inaccurate, the effect on the simulation would have been negligible.
CO2 emissions: per country or per capita?
Some people ask why Breathing Earth focuses on the CO2 emissions per country, rather than per capita. After all, wouldn’t the per capita rates give a better indication of who is being most wasteful? For example, the citizens of Australia, Kuwait and Luxembourg are among the world’s worst polluters, yet their CO2 emissions aren’t very prominent on Breathing Earth because of those countries’ relatively low populations.
The fact of the matter, however, is that what is most important is how many c02 emissions there are from the perspective of Planet Earth. Although some countries are clearly much worse polluters than others, the problem is ultimately a global one that humans of various nationalities have caused, and that humans of various nationalities must work together to solve.
One thing must surely be obvious though: The problem is largely a Western one. It is the Western countries who are leading the way in CO2 emissions, and when non-Western countries have high CO2 emission rates themselves, it’s usually because they are adopting Western habits. Since we, the West, have been a leading cause of the CO2 emissions problem, surely it is we who must step up and be the leaders in the solution.
The Realities of Bird and Bat Deaths by Wind Turbines
Wind is considered one of the cleanest means of harnessing energy. Unlike traditional power sources, wind energy is free of pollutants such as particulates, methane, mercury, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. No fuel is required for mining or drilling, billions of gallons of water are not consumed during operation, and minimal amounts of waste are produced. As the worldwide demand for sustainable energy grows, thousands of wind turbines are being installed each year.
It is unfortunate then that wind energy has its own dark side: thousands of birds and bats are killed annually by wind turbines. Causes of death include collision and barotrauma—internal injuries caused by exposure to rapid pressure changes near the trailing edges of moving blades.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimates that between 140,000 and 500,000 bird deaths occur at wind farms each year. The most significant threat is posed to species of large, threatened and high-conservation-value birds such as golden and bald eagles, burrowing owls, red-tailed and Swainson’s hawks, peregrine and prairie falcons, American kestrels and white-tailed kites. Since large birds have much lower reproductive rates than small birds (golden eagles, for example, have just one or two chicks in a brood less than once a year), their deaths have a far greater impact on the overall population of the species.
Wind turbines have also been found to be one of the leading causes of mass bat mortality—with some studies pinning fatalities at 888,000 bats a year.
“Unprecedented numbers of migratory bats are found dead beneath industrial-scale wind turbines during late summer and autumn in both North America and Europe,” says Paul Cryan, a research biologist with the U.S. Geological Survey. “There are no other well-documented threats to populations of migratory tree bats that cause mortality of similar magnitude to that observed at wind turbines.”
Bats may not be many people’s favorite creatures, but they play an important role in the planet’s ecosystems. Not only do the aerial mammals consume hordes of pest insects—they’re also instrumental in pollinating flowers and dispersing seeds to regenerate rainforests. Bats can potentially be cute too. (Images courtesy of American Wind and Wildlife Institute.)
In North America, tree bats comprise around 75 percent of bat species affected by turbines, with hoary bats making up half of all fatalities. According to the journal Biological Conservation, the hoary bat population could be at risk of extinction due to mortality from wind turbines. Like large birds, bats are long-lived mammals with low reproductive potential, requiring high adult survivorship to maintain populations. The widespread fatalities of hoary bats at wind turbines could (literally) cut down the hoary bat population by as much as 90 percent in the next 50 years.
Wind’s Practical Solutions for Birds
Unlike previous years, wind energy companies are now responsible for completing environmental impact assessments (EIAs) prior to the installation of wind turbines in an area. Bird migratory routes are avoided, and vegetation surveys are conducted underneath turbines to ensure that none of the migratory birds’ preferred food sources are present. In Spain, some wind energy companies even shut down wind farms when large numbers of migrating birds approach.
A 2019 study published in the Journal of Environmental Management describes mitigation measures involving superficially tilling the soil around the base of wind turbines—making the area less attractive to kestrels due to the consequent reduction of prey around the turbines. The result? A 75–100 percent decline in collisions over a period of two years.
Even more recently, Norwegian scientists have discovered that painting one of the three blades on a wind turbine black reduces avian deaths by 72 percent. Contrast painting has been found to drastically reduce bird deaths. (Image courtesy of Ecology and Evolution.)
The research was conducted by the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research over the span of a decade—from 2006 to 2016—at the Smøla wind farm on a bird-rich island off Norway’s west coast. In 2013, four turbines had a single blade painted black, and bird deaths were recorded for the years before and after the paint job. The resulting data showed a dramatic reduction in the annual fatality rate at the painted turbines relative to the control (i.e., unpainted) turbines.
The scientists behind the study have a theory for why birds are susceptible to flying into rotating turbine blades and why a single black blade helps them to perceive the wind turbine as an obstacle.
“Relative to humans, birds have a narrow binocular [using both eyes to focus on one object] frontal field of view and likely use their monocular [using each eye independently] and high?resolution lateral fields of view [having eyes on opposite sides of their heads] for detecting predators, conspecifics [birds of the same species] and prey,” explain the authors of the study. “Within an assumed open airspace, birds may therefore not always perceive obstructions ahead, thereby enhancing the risk of collision. To reduce collision susceptibility, provision of ‘passive’ visual cues may enhance the visibility of the rotor blades, enabling birds to take evasive action in due time.”
In other words, birds may be perceiving the rotating white blades as a “motion smear” rather than as a moving object—much like the blur effect humans see when waving a hand quickly in front of their eyes. Once a blade is painted black, the birds correctly distinguish the motion patterns as a moving object.
Innovations to Protect Bats
In order to develop practical solutions for reducing bat deaths around wind turbines, it is essential to understand the causes of the collisions. While aggregation during migration prevails as the most common source of mortality, many studies suggest that bats may be attracted to turbines out of curiosity, misperception, or as potential feeding, roosting and mating opportunities.
“Oftentimes, acoustic monitoring before construction of a wind facility may not show much bat activity, but this increases after the facility is built, as if the bats were drawn there,” reveals Sara Weaver, a biology lecturer at Texas A&M University–San Antonio.
It is promising then that researchers at Texas State University and Bat Conservation International have found an innovative solution to discourage bats from entering wind turbine airspaces: a bat deterrent system that jams bats’ echolocation capabilities with ultrasound.
Bats emit a high frequency call that is reflected off of objects, including their prey. They rely on the return echo to determine the distance and direction of their prey, enabling them to navigate and forage in the dark.
The bat deterrent system, manufactured by NRG Systems, utilizes a set of speakers to produce an ultrasonic acoustic field at a pitch of 20–50 kHz—the same range as bats’ natural echolocation frequencies. This interferes with their ability to receive and interpret their own echolocation calls and creates an airspace that is difficult to navigate, forcing the bats to give up and leave the area. Data collected over two years demonstrates that NRG’s bat deterrent technology curbed bat fatalities by 54 percent, with particularly positive results for Brazilian free-tailed bats and hoary bats. The deterrent system creates constant ultrasonic noise at the same frequency as the bat call, jamming the bat’s ability to hear its return echo. (GIF courtesy of NRG Systems.)
Interestingly, the idea is based on echolocation jamming in nature. Certain tiger moths protect themselves from becoming bat food by emanating ultrasonic clicks that interfere with the bats’ echolocation.
In case environmentalists were concerned, the technology won’t push bats out of their natural habitat either. The bat deterrent system only covers the rotor swept area of the turbine, so bats foraging below that level are completely unaffected. Furthermore, there is no risk of habituation where the speakers lose their effectiveness as bats get used to them (think of a bird perched on a scarecrow). Instead of simply annoying or scaring bats, the technology compromises the echolocation capabilities on which bats are heavily reliant.
The researchers concede that the technology may, however, have certain limitations.
“One challenge would be the physics of sound propagation at high frequencies,” says Aaron Corcoran, a research assistant professor at Wake Forest University. “Ultrasound attenuates very rapidly in air.”
Lower frequencies are more likely to dissipate further than higher ones, leading to a species-specific response where the technology works better to protect bats that echolocate on the lower end of the ultrasonic spectrum.
Another creative approach for preventing bat deaths at wind turbines involves the use of 3D-printed echolocation whistles modeled after the bat larynx. These lightweight whistles can be mounted on turbine blades to passively generate ultrasonic sounds as bat warning signals without the need for a power source.
By producing noises that are easily recognizable by bats at distances of over 100 meters, the whistles allow bats more time to alter their flight path and avoid colliding with rotating turbine blades. The project is spearheaded by researchers at Texas A&M University and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and is partially funded by the U.S. Department of Energy in an effort to protect wildlife at wind farms.
According to the research team, the 3D-printed whistles can be designed for a wide range of bat species due to the variety of bat larynges present in different types of bats. It is, of course, necessary that the sounds warn bats to stay away instead of accidentally having the opposite effect where bats are attracted to the wind turbines. Nature-friendly AI tools can help in this matter—such as an open-source machine-learning algorithm developed by South American scientists for the acoustic identification of bat species. With a library of 662 search phase pulses, the algorithm is already being used by wind energy companies to carry out environmental impact studies on wind farms.
A Greater Perspective
If we’re looking at the bigger picture, wind power’s impact on bird populations is relatively small when compared with other human-related sources of avian mortality. Numerous studies demonstrate that far more bird deaths are caused by collisions with buildings (676 million), vehicles (214 million), and power lines (32 million) in the United States. (It should be taken into consideration, though, that birds killed by wind turbines have historically been of higher conservation value than the robins and sparrows killed by non-wind-related sources.) Cats actually top the list when it comes to annual bird deaths in the United States. (Image courtesy of National Audubon Society.)
Even with its relatively low impacts, the wind industry holds itself to a higher standard and does more to mitigate wildlife damages than any other energy industry. Wind developers constantly evaluate risks to birds before projects are sited, adjusting wind farm design, turbine location and project operations to reduce potential harm. The wind industry follows the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Land-Based Wind Energy Guidelines—and as a result, over 90 percent of American wind farms now have zero eagle deaths.
In 2008, the U.S. wind industry collaborated with nationwide conservation organizations such as the National Audubon Society and National Wildlife Federation to establish the American Wind and Wildlife Institute, which addresses wind and wildlife concerns. The organization has published issue briefs on protecting bats, for instance—with suggestions to implement curtailment (the intentional halting of turbine blades) when wind speeds are low in order to reduce bat fatalities by 50 percent.
In the end, it’s climate change that causes the most significant threat to wildlife. According to the United Nations, climate change may contribute to the extinction of 20–30 percent of all species by 2030. Renewable wind energy can play a major role in displacing sources of energy that contribute to high carbon emissions, and its advantages have been proven to outweigh its impact on birds and bats.
“Saying wind power can only be green if there are no impacts is like saying medicine can only be effective if it has no side effects,” says John Anderson, director of siting policy for the American Wind Energy Association. “At some point, we need to put the benefits and risks into context.”

The Best Tips for Death Rite Bird:
Melee Users
It is advisable not to fight the Death Rite Bird on horseback, as most of its attacks will still clip you even at full sprint on Torrent. Using a Faith build helps, because this boss is weak to Holy damage, and having the Cipher Pata, Coded Sword, or any Faith-scaling weapon will help out a lot in dealing significant damage. Additionally, make sure to add any of the Holy damage Ashes of War to your weapon (the ones starting with ‘Sacred’). Try sticking to its legs and dodge rolling its attacks. When the boss flies away and disengages to attack you using either the Black Pinion Barrage or Rain of Spears, you can quickly use Torrent to run away and avoid the attack, then get close to the boss and dismount your horse.
Magic and Ranged Users
Many of its abilities can one-shot you if you don’t have high HP. Many more deal death-magic chip damage even if you block, or cause some AOE death-magic effect in large areas that track over and through light cover. Combined with its expansive ranged AOE attacks, many of which persist for a long time, allows it to close rapidly and attack again even as you dodge, meaning that ranged attacks are difficult to time. But because of those AOE and magic damage effects, fighting the Birds like the gargoyles (up close under the legs) is also a risky proposition. They can easily hit you while you’re mounted, and they have relatively high HP.
For the Central Mountaintop of Giants one, at least, the terrain makes all the difference. To the right side of the arena there’s a sort of valley that you can move to the top and bottom of to exploit the horizontal limits to his relatively flat hit-boxes. If he’s either significantly above or below you, most of the physical components of his attacks miss, making dealing with any AOE much easier and giving you time to get in hits. It also can help with some of his AOE ranged attacks, like the Black Pinion barrage. If you get a good summon out before you engage, take it slow, and quickly move to keep him on a different level from you, this becomes a significantly easier fight.
A Real-Time Map of Births and Deaths
This simulation gives an eerily omniscient vantage on the world as it fills.
In 1950, there were 2.5 billion humans. Today there are just more than 7 billion. In another 30 years, according to U.S. Census Bureau projections, there will be more than 9 billion.
Brad Lyon has a doctoral degree in mathematics and does software development. He wanted to make those numbers visual. Last year he and designer Bill Snebold made a hugely popular interactive simulation map of births and deaths in the U.S. alone—the population of which is on pace to increase 44 percent by 2050. Now, Lyon takes on the world.
“This one for world births/deaths is certainly more overwhelming than the one for the U.S.,” Lyon told me, “and the rate at which they must be occurring gives another glimpse into how big the world is.”
That is to say, watch this and everything you’re worried about today becomes nothing. That’s a healthy perspective, to a degree.
“What got me interested initially,” Lyon said, “was simply curiosity about what the pattern of births and deaths might be like, based on the current rates, coupled with the desire to learn more about some of the newer technologies for the web.”
In this case, that technology is primarily d3.js, a javascript library by New York Times graphics editor Michael Bostock. There’s a Chrome extension too.
“The visualizations here, while pulling together some numbers,” Lyon said, “are still qualitative because we of course don’t know what the pattern is really like. However, we do know where the numbers end up, so they must get there somehow.”

The IOC World Bird List is an open access resource of the international community of ornithologists. Our primary goal is to facilitate worldwide communication in ornithology and conservation based on an up-to-date evolutionary classification of world birds and a set of English names that follow explicit guidelines for spelling and construction.
To keep up with the current industry of taxonomic revisions, the IOC editorial team and advisors update the web-based list each January and June/July. The updates include changes of recommended names or classification, additions of newly described species, corrections of nomenclature, and updates of species taxonomy.
The IOC 12.1 update and subsequent updates include updated and expanded range descriptions for most regions between Indonesia and Polynesia, and for seabirds and many shorebirds globally. More information about this ongoing project is on the Ranges page under IOC Lists tab.
The IOC World Bird List complements three other primary world bird lists that differ slightly in their primary goals and taxonomic philosophy, i.e. The Clements Checklist of the Birds of the World, The Howard & Moore Complete Checklist of the Birds of the World, 4 th Edition, and HBW Alive/Bird Life International.
Improved alignment and consolidation of these independent taxonomic works is underway informally and was the topic of a vigorous Round Table discussion at the 2018 International Ornithological Congress in Vancouver, British Columbia. There was broad support for consolidation and improved alignment of global checklists of birds. Update ( 7/31/2020).

If there’s a dead bird in your dreams, it will be talking to your spirit. Something will be wrong with your plans.
Remember, the death of different birds speaks to you many things. The warnings can also come depending on different cultures and the place you live.
Also, you’ll see this symbol if there’s a dead canary bird in your dreams. It means that something isn’t right in your life. If your fail to look at that issue, you’ll end up paying for the outcomes.
But also, if you see these warnings, be positive. Though they aren’t good signs, focus on getting ideas to help you. Push to make things right and attain other goals in your life.
When you get to some ancient cultures, dead birds show something isn’t right in society. So, a dead bird would tell them that they have a bit of bad luck. Also, the gods weren’t on good terms with them.
2. It’s a Reborn
If you see dead birds, it’s never always something negative. Sometimes it shows a rebirth of some lovely thing that used to exist. So, you should have hope.
Remember, from a spiritual view, a dead bird isn’t a bad thing. It shows that change and renewal are coming to you.
In many traditions, a dead bird lets your old ways die. After that, you’ll have a rebirth of the new life.
The ancient Greeks had a belief that a dead bird showed that one life had ended and another one was to start. It was the beginning of a new generation.
Also, the same would apply to the Native Americans. It was a step of rebirth. The dead birds showed that one would be reborn with new behavior.
The old wrong traits are gone. Now, the new thing has come. So, if there’s a dead bird in your dream or daily life, it could mean that you are now becoming a better person.
Also, Native Americans value a dead eagle. They could even do a ceremony.
So, to them, it shows that the eagle’s death opens the way for their rebirth. They’ll now have a new beginning.
Dead birds in Indian myths and Christian arts showed a saved soul. One would get salvation from this world, be free and strong. The dead old birds go away with your wrongdoings.
3. Death
Yes, just like the event itself, a dead bird can show that there is death. Sad enough, it’s something that we can’t avoid.
Every bird enjoys being free and youthful. With these birds’ freedom, they can cover many areas in a short time. But once they die, these two things are gone.
While alive, people relate birds to being free and able to move around many places quickly. So, if we see them dead, it shows that we are all going in the same direction.
Even if we have full freedom in the world, we’ll still come to die one day. Also, even if you have more wealth, you’ll still die.
It means we will go through the same. So, it’s normal if you meet a dead bird in your dream and it makes you sad.
Yes, it’s something negative. But it’s either we’ll face, or we have seen someone who has met death.
But still, it shouldn’t be something that takes hope away from you. While you have the freedom of being alive, live out the ideas and plans of your spirit. Also, as you keep doing all the things while alive, you should be ready for death.
4. A Dead Dream
A dead bird can show you that your dream is over. Birds tend to fly high in the sky.
So, people connect the flying of the birds to what can happen to their dreams. The flight also lifts our spirit to many dark imaginations.
Once a bird dies, it shows that a dream is also dead. Remember, it doesn’t mean that you can’t start again. Go ahead and think of some new plan.
Also, this symbol is interesting. Many have dreams and plans that start but end up failing. After that, one should look for a new goal to pursue.
If you meet dead birds in your dreams or while walking, you should have a concern. Just know that there is one of your dreams that has failed.
You might also dream of a dead bird coming from the sky. That could be talking to your spirit that one of your important goals in your life isn’t going well. Sometimes, you might not be able to notice which dream is falling at that moment.
If you see a dead woodpecker in your dream, it shows something is wrong with dealing with your goals. You’d have lost the push to go for your dreams, unlike when you began. So, they’ll now be dead.
Yes, seeing a dead bird is sad. But it could help you bid goodbye to your old dreams and welcome a new dawn. It allows you to make gains from a fresh start.
Remember, you can also see a dead coming back to life. It shows something positive. You’ll now have a chance to light up a new dream.
5. Heartbreak
Be ready for heartbreak when you see a dead bird. It can be in your dream or while walking.
This thought comes because a dead bird brings negative things to life. You can connect it to relate it to the bad things that you go through in life. Expect it to be things like a divorce or losing your job.
Dead birds show you that you are about to have a stressful vision. It will remind you of something bad that happened to you back in time.
Sometimes, you’ll know it’s heartbreak if you see a dead eagle. Every eagle shows the power and being royal, which are good things. So, once the bird is dead, it could show a loss of these sweet things.
You’ll lose something you cherish if you see a dead eagle. So, once you see it, be careful with what you do.
Also, the death of the pigeon will bring you a message. It’s either you’ve given someone a heartbreak or someone else is planning to break your heart.
Back in time, people used pigeons to carry messages across many places. So, they show trust in many things.
You shouldn’t be worried or fail to sleep because of seeing such. If it reminds you of heartbreak, stay positive and focus on the future. Also, look for things that can seem to break your heart and work on them.
6. A Departed Soul of a Person Close to You
If you see a dead bird, sometimes it means that you’ve lost someone very close to you. Also, it can remind you of someone close to you that died.
Since a dead bird paints a picture of death, it will show you the less pleasing scene. In most cases, it will happen if the death is recent.
It has been the case for many years. You’ll find that Native Americans know that a dead bird reminds them of a death of a loved one. It happens especially when they see a dead eagle.
Remember, eagles were very close friends of Native Americans. So, once the eagle died, the people gave it a lovely burial. It showed that they had lost someone important.
Also, some people lose their peace once they see a dead bird. It reminds them of the memories they had with their loved ones who died some short time back.
Like other dead meanings, you should stay positive after it brings a bad memory to you. Remember, it’s a chance for you to start something new in your life. If the person that died was helping you in many ways, find new means to help you survive.
7. A Bad Place
Dead birds symbolize that you are living in an unsafe place. If you live in an area with many birds, know that your environment is clean and safe for every person. But when you wake up to see a dead bird, the sight will worry you.
It should speak to your soul that the air you breathe isn’t lovely. Also, the water that you drink in your area might not be safe for use.
If your meet or see many birds that fly high in the air like vultures dead, know that something is wrong. It would help if you started worrying about your health too.
Yes, it might fail to be true that your environment isn’t safe. Some die because of accidents or people killing them,
But in most cases, if you find dead birds on the road, it should raise your ears. Be sure to find these cases of dead birds in cities with many firms like China and India.
8. Losing Freedom and Peace in Family
Birds are a sign of being free. Also, it shows that in life, you can explore many things while you still have the strength. But when you see a dead bird, it shows that you’d have lost your freedom and peace.
Expect this act to happen, especially when a bird dies in your house. It won’t give your spirit and peace.
Our homes are unique and give you the best personal space. Also, a home is like a soul.
But a bird can come to your house and die, yet it’s not a pet. It should worry you.
Death could disturb your inner peace. Also, it would show that there are tensions that are yet to come to your family. It can be death, less peace, or money issues.
Remember, when alive, birds in your yard bring joy and laughter through their singing. So, when they die, they show many symbols.
It could mean that one family member is very ill or in trouble. The death of a bird also tells you that there is a new leaf that your family needs to take. Sometimes, it can be a business or the things you do in your family.
Also, it could mean that tough times are coming ahead for your family. You should be ready to have less peace and more chaos.
Still, this meaning should never bring you down. Focus on ensuring that everything you do brings happiness to your house.
Conclusion
People think it’s all about death when one sees a dead bird in a dream or during the day. Yes, in most cases, it’s never something good.
But sometimes, a dead bird can mean that there’s hope coming. You should know that it’s a chance for your new beginning. So, your old has gone, and the new has come.
Most birds are young, free, and full of energy. So, once they die, it’s sad. When it happens, it talks to your spirit many things.
So, have you met a dead bird in life or while in a dream? What were your thoughts? Please feel free to share with us.

Dead Worlds
Dead Worlds are places where individuals go to spend their afterlife upon death. The first mention of a Dead World was in «The New Frontier» by Jake, who says one must transcend into Glob World. In «The Vault», Finn is shown to have been reincarnated multiple times, suggesting that each incarnation of a person is sent to the corresponding Dead World.
Contents
Numbered Levels
1st Dead World
The 1st Dead World
The 1st Dead World seems to be the equivalent to Hell, as Choose Goose claims that it is for the worst of the worst. The realm includes the remains of various souls trapped into a pool of slime, unable to move or leave, while being constantly attacked and tormented by monstrous creatures. Wyatt is among its inhabitants, and before ascending, Maja.
9th Dead World
The 9th Dead World is mentioned in the episode «James Baxter the Horse». When an angry ghost mauls Finn and Jake, Jake thinks about their impending death. He says that, since a lot of dead people will be there, they might become separated. So as a means of identification, Jake tells him to listen for a rhythmic clapping sound he will perform.
27th Dead World
The 27th Dead World
Intorduced in Comic Issue #53, the 27th Dead World is a plane where souls go when they die to wonder aimlessly. Jake goes here to reclaim the stolen youth of Finn and many others, stolen by the Governor of Ghost-O-Rica, who plans to get so much youth that he can come back to life. It is guarded by a red creature with six skulls.
30th Dead World
The 30th Dead World
The 30th Dead World is a floating paradise with a temple. Tree Trunks, Mr. Pig, Danny, Randy, and the Alien Husband spend their afterlife here.
37th Dead World
The 37th Dead World is a mentioned Dead World. Jake’s ghost went to the 37th Dead World when he was killed by the Wand of Disbursement on Mars. Death appears to inhabit this world and Abraham Lincoln was able to visit it at will. The 37th Dead World may be related to the Land of the Dead, as Death is shown to dwell there in «Death in Bloom».
In «Together Again», Finn is assigned to this Dead World, before being reassigned to an unknown Dead World.
45th Dead World
The 45th Dead World
The 45th Dead World is a crystal or glass-like dimension, where Joshua, Margaret, and Jermaine spend their afterlife in a partially crystalline house.
50th Dead World
The 50th Dead World
The 50th Dead World seems to be the equivalent to heaven as it’s proclaimed to be one of the highest of Dead Worlds. It was first mentioned in «Ghost Princess» when Ghost Princess beckons her love, Clarence, to ascend with her there. This Dead World is mentioned again in the episode «The Suitor» by Braco, who stated that he wanted to float up to it with Princess Bubblegum.
This Dead World is finally seen in «Together Again», wherein it is revealed that the way to get there is to be free from all desires, even the desire to enter the Dead World. Jake’s soul is sent here after his death.
Unknown Dead Worlds
(as referred to by Jake)
Named Levels
Land of the Dead
The Land of the Dead
The Land of the Dead (also known as the Underworld) is a location where the souls of living creatures go after they die. Living people can enter the Land of the Dead by staring at a corner where two walls meet and crossing their eyes, which opens a portal. It is unknown whether this land exists in caverns beneath the Land of Ooo, or if it is in another dimension.
Pizza Dead World
The Pizza Dead World is briefly mentioned by Tiffany Oiler, who wanted to go there to «eat [his] feelings».
Glob World
Glob World is a place first mentioned by Jake in «The New Frontier». He explains that nothing will stop him «from transcending into Glob World» when he tries to accept his croak dream, which showed him that he would die by suffocating in space. His attempt at killing himself fails however, and the Glob World remains a mystery.

Something strange is happening in the world. First they (the authorities) claimed it was the cold which was killing the birds and the fish but now it’s happening all around the world, in warmer areas as well. So it’s not the cold which is killing these animals.
It’s not pollution either, such as poisoned water or something in the air (such as chemtrails) because it would have been detected by now and besides it’s happening everywhere in the world. It’s simply not possible that the entire world would suddenly turn poisonous. So what’s really happening here? No one really knows yet but everyone is speculating and creating theories of their own.
Some have even ventured to fairy tale lands into explaining that the birds died because they were terrified by fireworks which were used on January 1st 2011, but what about the fish? And why hasn’t this happened in previous years because this year is definitely not the first year in which people use fireworks.
Update 7 – Italian authorities concluded that indigestion was responsible for thousands of turtle doves falling from the sky.
HAARP has also been named as a cause of these mysterious mass deaths, but HARRP is based in Alaska, and could it reach and affect the entire world?
Update 5 – One of our visitors believes that these poor animals died because HAARP was used world wide, which is possible. At this point anything is possible. There could be more of these facilities in other countries as well. He sent us the following links:
–Possible HAARP Locations Around The World
–HAARP Nightmare Expands to Sweden; France is Next
HAARP is also suspected for the recent massive floods in Australia where Government radars and satellites have detected strange rings above Australia.
The truth is that no one really knows what’s happening and everybody is speculating. This strange world event will definitely not be ignored by us.
This is definitely not normal, not a routine event and not something that happens everyday. Some of these events have happened a few months ago while most of these events are happening right now, but never the less the listed older events still might give some clues to what could be causing this strange world event.
This page will get updated regularly as more such mysterious deaths are expected to happen anytime so be sure to check back.
So far, according to the authorities, all these poor animals died because of the cold and indigestion, but there’s a problem here. There’s no cold in these countries: Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Brazil nor in New Zealand and could all these birds and fish suddenly become victims of mass indigestion?
There’s something bizarre happening here.
This mysterious apocalyptic phenomenon has happened so far in the following places:

World Birds —
World Birds:

World Birds
World Birds.
World Birds.
World Birds?
World Birds.
WorldBirds.biz?
5 Unexplained Mass Bird Deaths
It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no wait a minute- it’s a massive flock of dead warblers. This may sound a bit nasty, but it is true that birds have died en masse, and that the phenomenon is not entirely unheard of.
There is an expression that something is a «canary in a coal mine”, which means that if something happens it is an indicator of a larger problem at work. For example, if the new cheese in your fridge suddenly grows mouldy overnight, perhaps it is an indication that there is something wrong with the inner workings of your refrigerator.
The term comes from true practice and application. Miners used to carry canaries in cages into the deep tunnels of coal mines as a note of added protection. If the canary suddenly died, it was an indication that toxic fumes such as carbon monoxide and methane were accumulating in the mine. The canary would die before a human would as their tolerance for the gases would be much lower, and this would give the humans time to escape to safety.
So, what is happening when a species of bird dies in massive numbers? Is it really an “aflockalypse”, and a sign of doomsday?
Here is a look at five occurrences of unexplained mass bird deaths, and what they may have indicated.
5. Blackbirds and Other Birds, US

It was New Year’s day in Beebe Arkansas, US. People were resting at home, celebrating the dawn of a new time, and recovering from a night of fun, as per usual on January 1st. Out on the roads, however, it wasn’t a typical dawn of the new year. Dead black birds lay on the ground by the thousands.
Just a few days later, about 500 cowbirds, starlings and redwing blackbirds were said to “rain down from the skies” in neighboring Louisiana.
Was some kind of voodoo at work? Some say the “die-off” in Arkansas was caused by fireworks being set off on the eve of Jan 31 in Beebe. It is thought the blackbirds may have flown at a lower height in order to avoid the celebratory show, and inadvertently rammed into objects like poles and buildings, as the result of the deaths seemed to be acute physical trauma. Others like British conservation spokesman Grahame Madge feel the blackbirds may have been poisone ce red-winged blackbirds are often considered to be pests that damage agricultural crops, Madge feels this could be the case.
What happened in Louisiana still remains an unsolved mystery.

2011 was certainly a deadly year for our feathered friends. On January 5th, just one day after the mass bird deaths were reported in Louisiana, officials in Falkoeping, Sweden announced that somewhere between 50 and 100 dead jackdaws were found littering the streets. Fireworks had not been set off, and local veterinarians speculated that disease of poisoning could have played a part in the birds’ deaths, but no one is really certain what happened.
3. Spotted Billed Ducks, Japan

Mass bird die-offs are said to happen every so often in nature, but is always a cause for concern. In 1995 a score of spot-billed ducks died unnaturally in a pond in Nishinomiya, Japan. It is thought the birds died from ingesting toxic cyanobacteria that appeared suddenly in the water. Experts believe the bacteria showed up because of untreated sewage water that was introduced to the pond following the Great Hanshinn Earthquake that happened in January 1995.
2. Guillemots, Netherlands

Even idyllic Netherlands has experienced birds dying in large numbers. In January, 2019 more than 20,000 guillemots washed up on Dutch shores, from the northern Wadden Islands to southwestern Zeeland. Apparently, the birds died from starvation. Officials fear something is wrong at sea, and that rough weather and a lack of fish could be causing the problem.
1. Mallard Ducks, Canada

Canada’s province of Calgary saw more than thirty mallard ducks also die of exposure and starvation in 2019. Calgary becomes quite cold in the winter with temperatures that can dip into the low 30sF (-15C), making living conditions difficult for birds that rely on open water to survive.

BIRD LIST: HOW MANY BIRDS IN THE WORLD
BIRDS IN THE WORLD: 400 BILLION; 10,000+ SPECIES of BIRDS; LISTS FOR 200 COUNTRIES, coded for Abundance, Breeding, Migration, Wintering, Endemic
How Many Birds in the World?
10,000 to 13,000 bird species and 200 to 400 billion individual birds are the rough estimates to the question of how many birds in the world. However, the question about the number of bird species in the world, depends on the taxonomist you ask. There are the splitters, who like to classify every group of birds with some kind of different characteristic as a different species. They list more than 13,000 species. And then there are the «bunchers». They like to keep things simple and only want to recognize species with very clear distinctions as species. Their list fluctuates around 10,000 species of birds worldwide. That situation lasted for about 2 centuries, starting in the early 1800s when people like Adubon and John Gould started describing the birds of the USA.
But now, for a little over a decade or so, a new brand of taxonomists arose for all species of animals and plants alike: The geneticists. One species at the time they have started to analyse the DNS of closely related species and on the basis of their analysis, new species have been added and other closely related species groups have been bunched. I really don’t know anymore what to think. Do we have to catch a bird to take a sample of its DNA in order to identify it? Does every birdwatcher have to carry a mist net to make sure that he/she makes the proper identification? Anyway, I take no position as to how many birds in the world there are. When we built our database, we came to 10,033, by adding up all the official species lists that individual countries recognized.
A bit of history about BIRDLIST WORLDWIDE, the oldest website providing lists of the birds of the world by country.
While working full time on assisting governments in developing countries, I kept on thinking how I could show people the way to find those fabulous national parks and nature reserves, so desperate in need of visitation. One day it occurred to me that birdwatchers are the most active «ecotourists» in the international ecotourism market. And what do travelling ecotourists want: Right, the list of the all birds of the country they intend to visit. So, what if I could offer a website about Birds of the World by country? In those days, the Internet still was small compared to now, and if I remember well, there was only one site that tried to distribute data information by country from its own birding software, which needed to be purchased.
Mision of BIRDLIST WORLDWIDE
The mission of the website is to contribute to the conservation of nature and to help secure the future of all birds and other species in their natural environments by providing information about birds, protected areas, and nature across the Internet.
Bird Lists of of the World
At the time, there was no database in existence that I was aware off, so I bought the Sibley and «Monroe’s A World Check list of Birds», tried to scan it, but that did not work with the software in those days. The names had to be typed by hand. So I hired a bunch of students and young biologists in Latin America to enter more than 13,000 names of species and subspecies of what at the time was the first complete database in the world listing the birds of the world. So those were the humble beginnings.
I bought all the bird guides I could get me hands on, while my students kept coding away into that database. When I felt I had enough data, I acquired birdlist.org and birdlist.com and went on line in 1998. As the internet developed and grew, more and more data became available, and one country and one state at the time, our data from bird guides were replaced by data from country and state committees for maintaining an official list. However, each committee uses its own methodology and coding, so we had to figure out a way to interpret those data so that you, the birder could have a better idea on when to expect a bird and how great the likelihood would be to actually encounter it.
We developed a coding system indicating abundance and residing status, such as breeding, migration, wintering, endemic, etc. So depending on the source, the original data are now in the process of being updated and interpreted to our best ability to from the most recent sources available.
Integrated web domains
The real challenge was on how to inform potential travelers to a country about the protected areas? That is why we created a domain about national parks en other protected areas. Moreover, we have tons of really good information on nature and nature conservation. Our most important domain are:
What To Do With A Dead Baby Bird
Sharing is Caring
Before you allow your imagination to drift, the answer has nothing to do with Armageddon. Although it is always sad to find dead birds, particularly those that are very young, this wistful occurrence is a normal part of the environment. With their fluffy feathers and squeaky calls, baby birds are naturally appealing to humans as well as to those of their parents, for which seeing them in distress can draw anyone to take action. While things might all look pleasant when you see young birds feeding happily in your garden, life is far from being easy for these insistently cute creatures, making it all common for us to encounter a dead baby bird.
Table of Contents
Why Do Baby Birds Die?
With only about 30% of baby birds surviving their first year of life, the mortality rate of either hatchlings or nestlings can be considered high. Too young to leave the nest, chicks can fall off for reasons ranging from attempts to take flight before it is time-appropriate to animals of prey scaring them to perform premature hops. Though fledglings are fully feathered and may seem ready to jump and flutter their wings, hopping out and landing on an unprotected spot leaves them vulnerable to predators that wouldn’t mind having young birds for their meal.
Considered as one of the bird kingdom’s biggest and most relentless nemesis, reports say that cats kill between 1.3 and 4 billion birds a year. While some predators such as hawks, owls, and falcons eat their prey, cats employ their furry paws and sharp claws just for the thrill. Although these young fledglings can bounce back on their feet after getting injured, here are several factors that can lead to such unfortunate situations:
Resisting the urge to come to the rescue of a helpless-looking baby bird out of its nest can be difficult. But baby birds can be quite resilient, in which there may be times when all you really need to do is to put them in a spot away from the eyes of potential predators and wait for nature or its flock to save them from danger.
Dead Baby Birds On Ground – What To Do?
Nearly everyone who spends time outdoors eventually finds a baby bird that is unable to fly, lost, abandoned, or worse, dead. Apart from it triggering a series of goosebumps and gag reflexes, picking up a dead baby bird immediately exposes you to disease outbreaks and certain health issues so it would be in your best interest if you don’t. Better yet, contact your local wildlife health center first before taking any action as they are more knowledgeable in the collecting, handling, and disposing of dead birds. In cases when the Health Department cannot analyze a dead baby bird that has undergone stages of decay, you may be asked to carefully slip it into a double bag and momentarily place it in your freezer. Do so, but not before wearing disposable gloves and washing your hands exhaustively afterward.
If you are asked to bring the bird in, make sure that you record your name and contact information, the bird’s species if known, its location, and a description of the circumstances including your guess on the bird’s cause of death. Again, it is important that you do not come in contact with the bird, particularly with any liquid that may come out of it, making it best to wear gloves as protection and to keep it in a double bag with all the essential information to ensure your safety.
Should I Remove A Dead Baby Bird From A Nest?
Sadly, no matter how isolated and secure a nest may seem, baby birds dying from natural causes or predatory attacks can happen. Once the living nestlings grow big and strong enough to leave the nest, their parents tend to lose interest in it and eventually fly away to build a new one in preparation for the next breeding season. This leaves the decomposing remains of a dead baby bird to take its course on the empty nest since some bird species are not known to perform clean-up duties.
As attractive as they may seem, the dead baby of bluebirds is left to be stepped on by the living baby birds, soiling the nest until it gets buried under or pushed out of the nest. Birds also instinctively know that a decomposing dead baby will attract scavengers and dangerous predators, prompting them to simply push it out or carry a dead baby’s body away from the nest. Although removing a dead baby bird yourself would do the birds occupying the nest a huge favor, they inherently know what to do in such a situation, saving you from the trouble of climbing a tree, extracting the body, and getting rid of it.

What To Do With A Dead Baby Bird? (When You Find A Dead Bird)
Birds die from natural, everyday animal kingdom causes such as lack of food, getting attacked or eaten by a much stronger predator, or crashing on your window head-on at a hundred miles per hour. When you find a dead bird, often the best course of action is to simply leave it alone or nudge it out of the way and allow nature to take over. Making certain that you DO NOT touch it with your bare hands is of utmost importance to protect you from certain viruses and diseases that might have afflicted the bird and its species.
Since it is highly critical to deal with and dispose of the dead baby bird quickly, here are a few essential steps on how to safely avoid spreading potential illness or parasites to you and other creatures:
Employ Proper Protection
Wearing disposable gloves at all times when handling dead baby birds ensures that harmful diseases and bacteria will not be transferred to humans. Plastic bags work as well if you do not have access to gloves. Just ensure that you do not use the same protective gear when handling or doing other household or garden chores.
Use Appropriate Tools
Even while wearing gloves, use a rake, a small shovel, or other tools to move the dead bird’s body. A piece of cardboard or sheets of paper can also be applied as additional barriers between the bird and your skin to avoid any possible contamination.
Wrap It Up
Place the bird in a plastic bag that can be sealed. If a bag is not accessible, wrap the bird firmly in layers of paper or disposable rags and discard them with the dead bird’s body.
Keep The Body Away From Predators
If burying the body on the ground is a difficult option, make sure that the bag is carefully placed in a covered trash container, away from the reach of pets, scavengers, and curious children. Close the lid tightly to avoid inviting hungry predators in search of an easy meal.
Ensure A Thorough Clean Up
Cleanse and sterilize any tools or protective gear used with a strong solution to make sure that any trace of bodily fluids that came from the bird is removed. If the dead baby bird leaves a significant mess on the spot where it was found, you can either remove that patch of soil or pour the cleaning solution over the area. Doing so might kill the grass as well as any dangerous and harmful bacteria.
Even if gloves were worn and there was no direct contact between you and the dead bird in your yard, washing your hands with hot soapy water shouldn’t be a question. Also, leaving dead birds in a brush pile, field, or compost heap may attract small predators such as dogs, cats, and rats which could become ill from the carcass and spread certain diseases. These backyard animals can also get too familiar with an easy food source and may start threatening and preying on other backyard birds.
Reporting Dead Birds
It may not always be necessary to take action or report every dead bird sighting. As mentioned before, most of the time it is best to simply leave the body of a dead bird alone, particularly if it is not a cause of bother or it does not pose any danger. However, there are certain situations that your local wildlife authorities should be notified of since they have a better understanding as well as equipment to address the following:
Getting in touch with your local wildlife officials provides you with the proper insight on how to safely preserve what they will need to see. Though it may not seem much, lending the authorities a hand can no doubt reap great rewards for the environment.

World birds and deaths

About a week ago at The Hague, many birds died spontaneously, falling dead in a park. You likely haven’t heard a lot about this because it seems keeping it quiet was the plan all along. However, when about 150 more suddenly died- bringing the death toll to 297- some started to take notice.
And if you are looking around that park you might have seen what is on the corner of the roof across the street from where they died: a newВ 5G mast,В where they had done a test. In connection with the Dutch railway station, to see how large the range was and whether no harmful equipment would occur on and around the station.
And harm happened, indeed. Immediately afterward, birds fell dead from the trees. And the nearby ducks that were swimming seemed to react very oddly as well; they were simultaneously putting their heads underwater to escape the radiation while others flew away, landing on the street or in the canal.
Again, almost at the exact same time that those animals died, near the station, Holland Spoor was tested with a 5G transmitter mast.
This wasn’t proof though. It was initially just conjecture.
In the meantime (30-10-2018) received some more information. The birds that fell massively dead would be the victims of an experiment, performed on those days in The Hague, where RF radiation was tested with a peak frequency of 7.40 GHz. This information comes from one source and should still be confirmed, if possible.
It is not clear at this moment whether tests with 5G transmission masts have been carried out again, but so far everything points in the direction of 5G as the most probable cause. Earlier, crazy things happened, such as with cows in Groningen’s Loppersum last year, where it was also tested with 5G. But also how in Switzerland a complete herd of cows collapsed in a ravine when there was tested with 5G.

In the Huijgenspark in The Hague, more than a hundred starlings have fallen dead from the trees in recent days. It is a mystery what happened to the animals.
The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) is having a number of birds examined in the laboratory of Wageningen Bioveterinary Research. Parts of the park are blocked and dogs are no longer allowed to be let out. The dead birds are always cleaned up as quickly as possible. Yet it is a lugubrious scene. Council member Robert Barker of the Party for the Animals had the feeling of being on a вЂcrime scene’. “The fact that so many birds fall from the sky at this location must have a cause and must be investigated. If there is talk of poisoning, then we have to take a hard time. ”
It is also possible that the birds have a disease. “In any case, it’s going fast. The animals are not emaciated, do not seem ill. They just fall dead from the tree, “says employee Sharon Lexmond of bird shelter De Wulp.
A possible link was established between 5G trials in Groningen and the вЂcrazy cows there, as they were called, see:В www.stopumts.nl/doc.php/Berichten%20Nederland/10423/groningen_wat_mankeert_de_koeien_van_stitswerd
Further info from Facebook:
Trondheim (3rd city of Norway) also attacked the birds. After 6 months there was no toxicological report yet. It has also happened in Sweden, Australia, United States.
In the meantime (30-10-2018) received some more information. The birds that fell massively dead would be the victims of an experiment, performed on those days in The Hague, where RF radiation was tested with a peak frequency of 7.40 GHz, which corresponds to a wavelength of 4.05 cm. This wavelength is of the same order of magnitude as the size of the starlings. This may be important because of possible resonance effects. The mast in question is about 400 meters from where the starlings have fallen dead. This information comes from one source and should still be confirmed, if possible.

Mysterious bird deaths in The Hague: dead starlings fall massively from the sky
Oct. 26, 2018
For several days in a row, dead starlings fall from the sky in the Huijgenspark in The Hague. It is estimated that around 150 birds have already lost their lives. What is the cause of this is being investigated?
The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority, the Dutch Wildlife Health Center and a Wageningen University laboratory are investigating the cause of death of the starlings. A veterinarian of bird care De Wulp performed a number of birds last week. She only found internal bleeding and no trace of poison.
Contaminated water
”Last year we had the same situation at the Haagse Hogeschool, where it was renovated at the time ”, says an employee of the Animal Ambulance.” Then dozens of dead jackdaws were found, which were probably poisoned because they had been drinking polluted water. What is going on right now is really speculating. Hopefully, we know more next week, because this is not normal. ”
No trace of poison

Again, dead starlings have been found in the Huijgenspark in The Hague. More than ninety dead birds were spread across the park in the Stationsbuurt.
We took the birds. Last time, five of the deceased starlings were examined by a local specialist. It did not show signs of poison, but only internal bleeding in two copies. The newly found starlings are examined by the specialized Wageningen Bioveterinary Research laboratory in Lelystad and the Dutch Wildlife Health Center in Utrecht.
The municipality has promulgated a ban on dogs in the area because the cause of the mortality is unclear. Poisoning is taken into account. The area has been blocked by the police.

How is the current state of affairs with regard to the dead starlings?
Last Friday, Wednesday and Thursday, a total of +/- 150 deceased starlings were found in the Huijgenspark in The Hague. OnSundayy, Thursday and Friday our veterinarian visited and carried out a total of 15 animals and collected material for further research. On Wednesday, the NVWA collected a cargo of birds that were examined in Lelystad on West Nile Virus. The negative result has now arrived.
On Thursday, the Dutch Wildlife Health Center also picked up a load of birds and we got a result today. Both veterinarians (ours and those from the DWHC) discussed their findings with each other. (Birds in good condition, some small bleeding in some animals, good for the upcoming winter, empty stomachs.) It is a very strange story!
Components of the deceased birds now go to various institutes for further research into rat poison and various viruses. On Monday the preparations are ready and the microscopic examination is started. In the meantime, the municipality has instituted an outlet ban in the park until further notice.
We will keep you informed and hope that we will get a quick answer regarding the bizarre deaths.

There is, of course, no certainty about the cause. There are stronger 4G and IoT channels in the vicinity near the park. In July there was also 5G tested, but then the birds did not swarm and they did not arrive in the park. IoT has also been active since 30 October 2017, so it is only briefly active with a safe distance (for humans) of 7.4 meters and with a 2000 Watt transmitter at less than 200 meters from the park main beam direction exactly across the park. Also at the same distance LTE channels and at another location also LTE stations etc. Here again exactly about the park.
The truth about the safety of 5G is that it’s not safe. And while letters have been sent and people have raised the alarm, the “powers that be” don’t seem to care. All in the name of money and industry.

MASS ANIMAL DEATHS FOR 2022
If the information on this page causes you concern regarding the future, then see what must I do to be saved?
DEAR READER, please see our page SEEK THE LORD TODAY as the close of human probation is coming!
Below is a list of worldwide mass animal deaths for 2022, with pages also for mass die offs from the previous 9 years. There are animals dying all over the world today in huge numbers, due to the polluted state of the sea and air. Millions of Fish and massive numbers of various marine creatures are washing ashore dead. Birds are falling dead out of the sky, and millions of poultry and wildlife are dying from avian flu. The animals of the land are also dying in large numbers. Now although animals and fish have been dying all throughout history, we have not seen the massive consistant numbers that we are seeing today. Please remember! This is just one of the MANY signs of the last days. It’s time to wake up!
In many of these events people from all walks of life are saying that they have «never seen anything like this before«.
Some people say this is all a mystery. Some say these are all natural die offs. Some people say that Chemtrails is the cause. Some say this is caused by Fukushima. Some people say this is due to man’s pollution. And others say this is God’s judgment. Whatever the cause, we know one thing for certain, that this was prophesied to happen in the Bible.
NOTE: Due to time constraints, we no longer report every event, so the numbers are much lower than they should be.
If you are affected by this information, then please see what must I do to be saved?
There is no doubt that these mass animal deaths occuring around the world today is one of the many signs of the times, showing that we are living in the last days. Throughout history we have not seen animals dying in these kinds of numbers all around the world. But the earth and the seas are so polluted now from man made chemicals and oil spills, the animals just don’t stand a chance! But this was to be expected, as God has already warned us through Bible prophecy that this world is heading for complete ruin. Friends, it’s time to turn to Jesus Christ. Do wind turbines kill birds?

With U.S. dependency on foreign oil getting uncomfortably close to crisis levels, any viable alternative energy source is looking pretty good. With environmental damage from coal and gas-derived power already at crisis levels, even alternatives that are decades off are looking pretty great. Wind power, a viable energy source that costs far less than nuclear and coal power and contributes almost no pollutants to the environment, seems to many of us to be almost ideal.
But there are some people who disagree and are fighting the installation of new wind turbines in the United States. They cite bird mortality as an unacceptable side effect of wind-generated power. Through lawsuits and protests against pending legislation, they hope to save huge numbers of birds from death at the blades of massive wind turbines.
To most experts, though, there’s a problem with the bird-mortality argument: The vast majority of research shows that wind turbines kill relatively few birds, at least compared with other man-made structures. The statistics are shocking if you consider just how many people are crying out against wind power for the birds’ sake:
Associated bird deaths per year (U.S.)
Feral and domestic cats
Hundreds of millions [source: AWEA]
Windows (residential and commercial)
70 million [source: AWEA]
Lighted communication towers
Collisions with wind turbines account for about one-tenth of a percent of all «unnatural» bird deaths in the United States each year. And of all bird deaths, 30 percent are due to natural causes, like baby birds falling from nests [source: AWEA]. So why the widespread misconception that labels wind turbines «bird-o-matics»? It all starts with California, raptors and the thousands of old turbines that make up the Altamont Pass wind farm.
In this article, we’ll find out where the statistics went wrong, how thousands of birds do end up flying into wind turbines each year and what’s being done to reduce the number of bird-turbine collisions.
The Problem with Wind Turbines
It’s easy to see why wind turbines are at least potentially hazardous for birds: Massive blades with tips spinning at up to 179 mph (80 meters per second), hundreds of feet (at least 30 meters) in the air, are an obvious problem for anything flying near them [source: MIT]. The fact is, birds do fly into the path of the blades and die a grisly death. Most of the affected birds are songbirds, and about 10 percent are birds of prey like raptors [source: ABC]. It’s the raptors that started all the protests, when hundreds of carcasses were found strewn across Northern California’s Altamont Pass wind farm.
Bird conservationists took great interest, and the misconception that wind turbines pose a major threat to bird populations grew from there. By applying the mortality rates at Altamont Pass to every wind farm in the United States, the bird-mortality figures became extremely inflated. In fact, Altamont Pass is a unique case of a wind farm that is truly a significant hazard to birds.
Altamont Pass is different for two main reasons: turbine location and turbine design.
There are more than 4,000 wind turbines at the Altamont Pass energy farm in California. It’s one of the first wind farms in the United States, and its 20-year-old turbines are accordingly out-of-date. Their design has long since been abandoned: Latticework blades with small surface area are far from efficient for energy generation, and far from safe for birds. The lattice structure actually attracts large birds, because the frame makes for an excellent perch. Large birds like raptors are drawn to the blades, and collision rates are high as a result.
The other design issue is the blades’ low surface area, because less surface area means the blades have to spin faster to turn the electricity-generating turbines. The faster the blades spin, the more dangerous they are to birds flying near them. It’s unlikely that a bird that finds itself in the vicinity of the blades could ever make it through when they’re spinning so fast.
As if this weren’t enough to make old wind farms a bird nightmare, the Altamont Pass power plant was built smack dab in the middle of a major migratory route for large birds. The area also houses the world’s largest single population of golden eagles [source: USA Today].
The total for all wind farms in the United States, is 140,000 to 328,000 per year according to a 2013 estimate [source: Loss, et al.]. Even though up to 1 billion birds die each year by flying into windows, no one is brushing off the tens of thousands of turbine-related deaths every year. So what are we doing to lower that number? On the next page, we’ll see what changes are being implemented to save the birds.
