What does “you and the rest of the world” mean?

I sometimes see ‘you and …’ in English, for example “you and the other nine”, “You and your big mouth!”. This makes me sensitive to you and something.

“Okay,” said Harry slowly. “But … are you saying Karkaroff put my name in the goblet? Because if he did, he’s a really good actor. He seemed furious about it. He wanted to stop me from competing.”

“We know he’s a good actor,” said Sirius, “because he convinced the Ministry of Magic to set him free, didn’t he? Now, I’ve been keeping an eye on the Daily Prophet, Harry –“

“– you and the rest of the world,” said Harry bitterly.

Does this ‘you and the rest of the world’ mean just a literal meaning? If Harry says “The other people, too”, is there any big difference in what Harry means to say?

As stated by yourself, Harry doesn’t like anyone to be interested in the Daily Prophet.

When «Harry» said ‘you and the rest of the world’, he is stating : «Everyone reads the Daily Prophet!»

It’s the same when someone say, teases you. You could get upset and say «No one likes me anymore!»

Not really literally no one. It’s just an expression.

«You and. » is an idiomatic use of English, which means it is used more figuratively than literally.

In saying «You and the rest of the world,» Harry is pointing out that Ron is not the only person who is reading about him in the Prophet. We are being told that a lot of other people are doing the same thing; not literally everyone else in the world, but still an impressively large number.

Similarly, «You and your big mouth» doesn’t literally mean that you have an unusually large mouth. Instead it means that you talk too much (i.e. use that mouth a lot). The unspoken continuation of the sentence would be something like «. have just said something really stupid.»

«The other people, too,» is not quite equivalent to «You and the rest of the world.» There are shadings of meaning that make it work much less well in context; in particular, it takes the focus off «you» and implies that the others are in some way important to the discussion. «You and the rest» only cares that the other people exist, not that they matter.

World of the rest

Rest is a system whereby characters may accumulate a bonus modifier for experience point (XP) gains. Earning XP from certain sources while rested will grant additional XP, but will consume part of the rest state or bonus. The bonus is gained slowly while the character logged out, and more rapidly whenever the character is in an inn or city. A character’s rest bonus is displayed along the top of their XP bar.

The rest bonus serves several purposes. Its presence allows players who play less often to level their characters at an increased rate, while its absence encourages players who are playing frequently or for prolonged periods to take a break, or level an alt. It can also encourage players to return to the game after time away, and can be seen as a way of discouraging game addiction. In terms of gameplay, the rest bonus encourages players to begin and end each playing session by ‘resting’ their player in an inn or city, which can increase immersion in the role-playing elements of the game. It can also encourage players to spend time engaging in other aspects of play such as trading and PvP.

The rest bonus is a useful and easily-obtained boost to the leveling process, and provides a good reason to log out in cities and inns, and to take regular breaks from play. However, even if constantly maintained, it represents only a fraction of the experience gained by a player while leveling, and should be viewed as a bonus and not a requisite for play.

Storing up rest

One bubble of rested XP (5% of your current level) is earned for every 8 hours spent resting in an inn or city, or for every 32 hours spent logged off in another location. A maximum of 30 bubbles (150% of your current level) may be earned. This means that you can leave your character resting in an inn or capital city for up to 10 days (without gaining experience) before you earn the maximum amount of rest state. A fully-resting character stores up one full level of rest in 160 hours (6.67 days).

Note that rested bonus is earned relative to the character’s current level. Since lower-level characters gain levels more frequently, the rested bonus is generally consumed far more quickly at these levels. For example, a fully-rested level 1 character could easily use up their rest bonus within a few minutes, while a level 50 character’s full rest bonus could last for hours of play. The rested bonus can therefore be seen to be more valuable and worthwhile at higher levels.

It may also be possible to engage the resting state while in ghost form, or dead. You also gain rested XP if you log off while on route between two flight points.

When you are rested and you gain eligible XP, in the combat log it may say something like

120 XP (+60 rested XP).

This means you received a total of 120 XP: 60 XP for the action, and an extra 60 rested XP.

The amount of rested bonus consumed is equal to the total amount of XP gained. In the example above, 120 rested bonus would be used, not 60.

Experience earned from exploration and quests does not consume the rested bonus. When XP is gained from these sources, the rest marker will be moved forward by as many XP as you gain from the exploration or quest, indicating that your rested reserve remains unchanged. Also if you’re using the Recruit-A-Friend function, the rest marker will be pushed forward and your rested XP will not be consumed.

Execute the following script to display the amount of Rested XP your character has earned:

When you are about 5th or 6th level, you will receive quests to go to another town area. This town is where the first inn is available to a new character. Put another way, until you get your first 5 or 6 levels out of the way you will not happen across an inn and so you will have to ‘camp out’ when you logout, accumulating rest at the slower «wilderness» rate. It is easy enough to get these first five levels, so it is good to finish those quests and hurry over to the inn.

At this inn, and at all other inns that you find, you will find an innkeeper, who can bind your [ Hearthstone ] to that inn. Activating your hearthstone you will move your character to that bound inn (until you do this, the hearthstone will return you to the starting zone). This is useful for rapid or unexpected logout situations; you can activate your hearthstone and log out at the inn, gaining rest.

By having at least two characters, you can rest on one while playing the other! This is one benefit of having alts.

Not required for play

Rested bonus is nice to have and use, but it is not required. Some players have been known to stop playing their characters when they have consumed all of their rested bonus. This is fine, and it is the player’s choice, but know that it is not bad to play without rested bonus. Your character is not tired, nor penalized in any way. It actually takes longer to level to the current cap if you stop playing a character specifically to let rested bonus accrue because in the amount of time the bonus fills up you could easily go another level.

Why rest state was added

The rest state was added for a number of reasons: [1]

In the beta version of the original game, rest did not exist and experience was designed to prevent players from playing more than a few hours in a row. Experience gained was divided by 50% after few hours. However, beta-testers did not like it and rest was implemented, giving instead 200% of experience for few hours, which Blizzard’s developers later reported as being the «same numbers seen from the opposite point of view».

The world of 2033 lies in ruins as a result of World War III (a.k.a. the Great War of 2013 or simply Armageddon). The great war is an integral part of the Metro Series canon, as it’s the major event that predates the events of both the books and the games.

In novels from the Universe of Metro 2033 series we see the name of this conflict varies from place to place. The inhabitants of Kraków tend to call it the Conflagration due to widespread destruction wrought by the fires as a result of nuclear detonations. In Serdobsk, the event has been dubbed as the Beginning because it sparked a new era for humanity and planet Earth. However, Varsovians, as well as survivors elsewhere in Poland and Russia, usually refer to the war as Armageddon due to the obvious biblical reference. Alternatively, many people call it simply the Attack or the Catastrophe.

What is certain, from Stepan’s account of the war along with flashbacks and dialogue in Metro: Last Light, and the live-action shorts, nuclear weapons landed on Russian soil shortly before they responded. Several missiles were launched from launch sites across Russia only seconds before a nuclear bomb detonated over Moscow. After the exchange, Russian nuclear submarines enacted the Dead Hand contingency, and the majority launched their payload in retaliation, or stood down because of moral concerns [2] or lack of new targets. [3] Regardless, the entire world was completely devastated.

In the days following the nuclear exchange, the planet was transformed into a toxic dust bowl. Massive amounts of irradiated material began circulating around the globe, spreading throughout the atmosphere and blocking out the sun; the result was nuclear winter. The inability of plant life to maintain photosynthesis, coupled with severe radiation lead to the destabilization of the food chain, and the extinction or mutation of most animal life on the surface. These changes in the Earth’s biosphere lead to the surface air being unsuitable for human life. 20 years after the war, many areas (especially in cities) are still irradiated, some so severely that only a few minutes’ exposure is lethal. It’s speculated that several billion people survived the initial exchange, but given the surface conditions, most died shortly after due to radiation exposure or starvation, or have become Dark Ones and humanimals.

The fate of the rest of the planet is unknown after the exchange. While the southern hemisphere of the globe was largely untouched by warheads, the infrastructure of every major nation was presumably devastated, making the damage impossible to repair and leading to the collapse of all global superpowers. It’s assumed that, where possible, civilian populations did the same as the Russians and hid underground.

In Metro 2035, Artyom meets a group of survivors claiming to be from Murom in Russia, though the Rangers of the Order believe they are NATO spies. Artyom also hears radio broadcasts from the following places:

This reveals that humanity continues to exist all over the world in civilised pockets. It basically confirms the information that had already been made canon earlier by the Universe of Metro 2033 extended book series.

A repeating official radio broadcast that Artyom picks up on the Aurora, likely dated to shortly after the bombs were dropped all over the world, warns the residents of the Russian Federation (or what remains of it) to stay away from the following cities due to dangerously high levels of radiation: Barnaul, Biysk, Kemerovo, Novokuznetsk, Novosibirsk, and Tomsk. Some citizens actually survived in the Novosibirsk Metro, but political instability and supply shortages led to internal turmoil that ultimately killed off almost everyone who was left.

On the 24th of May 2012, a live action movie was posted to YouTube in promotion of Metro: Last Light. The film gave a snapshot of the moments before the bombs fell.

Metro Exodus [ ]

In Metro Exodus, it is rumored that World War 3 still rages on across the globe and never actually ended. According to Miller, after the nuclear attacks on Russia, the government chose to «play dead» to make the US and NATO forces think that the Russian military had been destroyed so there will be no more bombings on Russian soil. In order for the ruse to play out, the Moscow Defense Command constructed multiple radio jamming stations surrounding Moscow and the suburbs to blind their enemies.

It’s later revealed that there are no occupation forces within Russia, and that the government was unable to enact their contingency plan, with a (presumably) Russian Army Officer revealing at gunpoint that once they arrived, there were no rations, before being executed by Colonel Miller.

On March 4, Russia seized Zaporizhzhia, one of Europe’s largest nuclear power plants. Russian shelling of the southeastern Ukraine facility set off a fire, which Ukrainian officials warned could set off a nuclear disaster. It took hours, but the fire was extinguished, and international monitors said that they do not detect elevated radiation levels and that the fire did not damage “essential” equipment. US officials have said Russia now appears to be in control of the plant.

But the incident was a reminder of how dangerous this war in Ukraine is becoming, and how uncertain and confusing things still are on the ground. Russian troops were advancing toward Kyiv, and thousands and thousands are fleeing in advance of a possible siege on the city.

The Russian military has made advances in the south, and are gaining in the area of Kherson, a port city on the Black Sea whose control is reportedly contested, and Mariupol, on the Sea of Azov. Russian bombardment of these cities has resulted in humanitarian issues, with bridges and roads damaged by the fighting and dwindling access to food, clean water, medicine, and electricity in certain areas. Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, experienced heavy Russian fire this week, and strikes have heavily damaged residential areas.

Ukrainian and Russian officials met in early March, and tentatively agreed on the need to humanitarian corridors — basically, safe zones for civilians to flee and supplies to pass through — but did not reach agreements on a larger ceasefire. As of March 6, multiple attempts to evacuate Ukrainian civilians have been halted because of Russian shelling.

Putin’s attempt to redraw the map of Europe risks becoming the most devastating conflict on the continent since World War II. Already, it is causing an astounding humanitarian crisis: Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of civilians have died, and more than 1.5 million people have fled the violence so far, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, making it the fastest-growing refugee crisis in Europe since World War II.

The battle for Ukraine began in the early morning hours, local time, on February 24, when Russian President Vladimir Putin launched what he called a “special military operation” into the country of about 40 million. He claimed the Russian military seeks “demilitarization and denazification” but not occupation; attacks shortly followed from multiple fronts and targeted toward multiple cities.

Ukraine’s resistance has complicated Russia’s efforts to seize the country. Russian forces have not made the progress they likely thought they would at the start of the campaign. The Russian military’s early strategy has perplexed some experts and observers. But the more protracted this war becomes, the more catastrophic it will be.

The United States and its allies in Europe and the United Kingdom imposed the toughest financial sanctions ever on Russia after the first incursion, and have only built on these penalties since. On February 26, the United States and European countries agreed to block some Russian banks from SWIFT, a global messaging system, which will essentially prevent those institutions from doing any global transactions, a punishment that allies had previously hesitated to pursue. Already, Russia’s economy is reeling from the impact of these penalties.

This sustained international pressure, and Ukraine’s resistance, may still not be enough to force Russia to end its military campaign. That leaves Ukraine — and the world — in a perilous and unpredictable moment.

Ukraine is under siege

After months of Putin building up tens of thousands of troops near the Ukrainian border and a series of failed diplomatic talks, Russia is now waging a full-out war on Ukraine.

Tensions escalated quickly when, on February 21, Putin delivered an hour-long combative speech that essentially denied Ukrainian statehood. He recognized the independence of two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine where Moscow has backed a separatist rebellion since 2014 and sent so-called peacekeeping forces into the region. As experts said, that was likely just the beginning, setting the stage for a much larger conflict.

Days later, that larger conflict materialized. On February 24, Putin announced he was launching an assault “to defend people who for eight years are suffering persecution and genocide by the Kyiv regime,” a reference to a false claim about the government in Ukraine. He demanded Ukraine lay down its weapons or be “responsible for bloodshed.”

Soon after Putin’s speech, reports emerged of explosions around cities, including Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine and the capital Kyiv. The Ukrainian foreign minister called it “a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.” By the afternoon in Ukraine, Russian troops and tanks had entered the country on three fronts: from Belarus in the north, from the east of Ukraine, and from the south.

The Russian military has targeted critical infrastructure, like airports, with airstrikes and has launched more than 400 missiles, as of March 1. As a senior US defense official said on February 26, “There’s no doubt in our mind that civilian infrastructure and civilian areas are being hit as a result of these barrages.”

The main battlefronts are in Kyiv’s outskirts; in southern Ukraine, including the major city of Mariupol; and in eastern Ukraine around Kharkiv, the country’s second-largest city.

“They had maximal war aims,” Michael Kofman, research director in the Russia studies program at CNA, said in an interview posted on Twitter on February 25. “They had a military operation that’s now in progress, first to try to achieve regime change, encircle the capital, and try to overthrow the Ukrainian government, and then a much larger set of pincer movements to encircle and envelope Ukrainian forces. Try to do this quickly and force surrender of isolated pockets.”

But the Russian army has not been able to completely roll over Ukrainian forces, and some analysts have suggested Moscow may have been surprised at Ukraine’s resistance. Pentagon officials said that, as of March 4, Russia has committed about 92 percent of its combat power so far. Ukraine’s airspace remains contested.

Samuel Charap, a senior political scientist at RAND Corporation, told a panel of reporters on February 28 that Russia’s military performance has been odd. “In other words, some of the things that I would have expected — like the air force taking a major role — have not happened.”

“Seems to me there was a lot of war optimism and a sense that the [Ukrainian] government would fall with just a little push,” Charap continued. “And that didn’t happen. I wouldn’t read too much into that about the ultimate course of the war, though. This is still a situation where the deck unfortunately is stacked against the Ukrainians, despite their bravery.”

Putin himself has called on the Ukrainian army to “take power into their own hands and overthrow” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, a sign that Putin remains focused on regime change. “According to the available intelligence, the enemy marked me as a target No. 1 and my family as the target No. 2,” said Zelenskyy, speaking on the night of February 24.

Efforts to stop the fighting have so far failed. On February 28, high-level officials from Russia and Ukraine met at the Ukraine-Belarus border, and again on March 3. Russia has continued to insist that a ceasefire requires “demilitarization” and neutrality for Ukraine, but Ukraine has only continued to push for more military aid and ascension into Western bodies like the EU, even signing an EU membership application amid the fighting.

Both Ukraine and Russia have suggested they will hold another round of talks in coming days. Across conflicts, there is usually a severe escalation in fighting before ceasefires, as everyone attempts to maximize their leverage. “I think that they want to inflict maximum damage to pressure the Ukrainian government to seek some sort of ceasefire that is effectively a surrender,” said Margarita Konaev, associate director of analysis and research fellow at Georgetown’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology.

The toll of this young conflict is growing. The UN has said that, as of March 6, more than 350 civilians have been confirmed killed and hundreds more have been wounded; Ukraine’s emergency services puts the civilian death toll at 2,000 people as of March 2. Ukrainian officials have said about 11,000 Russian troops have been killed in the fighting, as of March 6, but American and European estimates of Russian casualties have been substantially lower. The Russian government has reported nearly 500 soldier deaths. Experts said all these statistics should be treated with a great deal of caution because of the fog of war and the incentives both Russia and Ukraine have to push a particular narrative.

Ukrainian officials have also accused Russia of war crimes after reports of a shelling of an orphanage and kindergarten outside of Kyiv. Across Ukraine, thousands of civilians of all ages are enlisting to fight. Ukrainian officials called on residents to “make Molotov cocktails” to defend against the invasion. More than 1.5 million Ukrainians have fled to neighboring countries like Poland since the conflict began, according to a United Nations estimate.

The roots of the current crisis grew from the breakup of the Soviet Union

Russia’s invasion contravenes security agreements the Soviet Union made upon its breakup in the early ’90s. At the time, Ukraine, a former Soviet republic, had the third-largest atomic arsenal in the world. The US and Russia worked with Ukraine to denuclearize the country, and in a series of diplomatic agreements, Kyiv gave its hundreds of nuclear warheads back to Russia in exchange for security assurances that protected it from a potential Russian attack.

But the very premise of a post-Soviet Europe is helping to fuel today’s conflict. Putin has been fixated on reclaiming some semblance of empire, lost with the fall of the Soviet Union. Ukraine is central to this vision. Putin has said Ukrainians and Russians “were one people — a single whole,” or at least would be if not for the meddling from outside forces (as in, the West) that has created a “wall” between the two.

Last year, Russia presented the US with a list of demands, some of which were nonstarters for the United States and its allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Putin demanded that NATO stop its eastward expansion and deny membership to Ukraine, and also made other demands for “security guarantees” around NATO.

The prospect of Ukraine and Georgia joining NATO has antagonized Putin at least since President George W. Bush expressed support for the idea in 2008. “That was a real mistake,” Steven Pifer, who from 1998 to 2000 was ambassador to Ukraine under President Bill Clinton, told Vox in January. “It drove the Russians nuts. It created expectations in Ukraine and Georgia, which then were never met. And so that just made that whole issue of enlargement a complicated one.”

Ukraine is the fourth-largest recipient of military funding from the US, and the intelligence cooperation between the two countries has deepened in response to threats from Russia. But Ukraine isn’t joining NATO in the near future, and President Joe Biden has said as much. Still, Moscow’s demand was largely seen as a nonstarter by the West, as NATO’s open-door policy says sovereign countries can choose their own security alliances.

Though Putin has continued to tout the threat of NATO, his speech on February 21 showed that his obsession with Ukraine goes far beyond that. He does not see the government in Ukraine as legitimate.

“Ukraine is not just a neighboring country for us. It is an inalienable part of our own history, culture and spiritual space,” he said, per the Kremlin’s official translation. “Since time immemorial, the people living in the south-west of what has historically been Russian land have called themselves Russians.”

The two countries do have historical and cultural ties, but as Vox’s Zack Beauchamp explained, Putin’s “basic claim — that there is no historical Ukrainian nation worthy of present-day sovereignty — is demonstrably false.”

As experts noted, it is difficult to square Putin’s speech — plus a 2021 essay he penned and other statements he’s made — with any realistic diplomatic outcome to avert conflict. It was, essentially, a confession that this wasn’t really about NATO, said Dan Baer, the acting director of the Europe program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and a former ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. “It was about that he doesn’t think Ukraine has a right to exist as a free country,” he said before Putin’s escalation on the night of February 23.

This is the culmination of eight years of tensions

Russia’s assault grew out of mass protests in Ukraine that toppled the country’s pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych, which began over his abandonment of a trade agreement with the European Union. US diplomats visited the demonstrations, in symbolic gestures that further agitated Putin.

President Barack Obama, hesitant to escalate tensions with Russia any further, was slow to mobilize a diplomatic response in Europe and did not immediately provide Ukrainians with offensive weapons.

“A lot of us were really appalled that not more was done for the violation of that [post-Soviet] agreement,” said Ian Kelly, a career diplomat who served as ambassador to Georgia from 2015 to 2018. “It just basically showed that if you have nuclear weapons” — as Russia does — “you’re inoculated against strong measures by the international community.”

Since then, corruption has persisted in the Ukrainian government, and the country ranks in the bottom third of the watchdog group Transparency International’s index.

Ukraine’s far-right presence has grown and become somewhat normalized, and there are government-aligned fascist militias in the country. But Moscow has drawn out those issues to advance false claims about genocide and other attacks on civilians as a way to legitimize the separatist movement in eastern Ukraine and to create a pretext for invasion. In his prerecorded speech shared on the eve of the bombardment of Ukraine, Putin said he sought the “denazification” of Ukraine.

To be clear: The Ukrainian government is not a Nazi regime and has not been co-opted by the far right. Zelenskyy is Jewish; he speaks proudly of how his Jewish grandfather fought against Hitler’s army.

Yet, days earlier, Putin used these sorts of claims as part of his explanation for recognizing as independent the so-called Luhansk People’s Republic and the Donetsk People’s Republic, the two territories in eastern Ukraine where he has backed separatists since 2014. “Announcing the decisions taken today, I am confident in the support of the citizens of Russia. Of all the patriotic forces of the country,” Putin said before moving troops into the regions for “peacekeeping” purposes.

At the time, most experts Vox spoke to said that looked like the beginning, not the end, of Russia’s incursion into Ukraine.

“In Russia, [it] provides the political-legal basis for the formal introduction of Russian forces, which they’ve already decided to do,” Kofman, of CNA, told Vox on February 21. “Secondarily, it provides the legal local basis for Russian use of force in defense of these independent republics’ Russian citizens there. It’s basically political theater.”

It set “the stage for the next steps,” he added. Those next steps are now clear.

How the rest of the world is responding

The United States and its allies around the world have condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and have since announced increasingly tough sanctions, intended to completely isolate Russia from the international community and inflict real economic costs.

Biden announced on the afternoon of February 24 that the United States would impose sanctions on Russian financial institutions, including cutting off Russia’s largest banks from the US financial system, and on Russian elites in Putin’s inner circle. America will also implement export controls on certain technologies. The United Kingdom and Europe added their own sanctions, imposing the “massive” penalties the West had been warning Putin about.

The US and its allies have only amped up the pressure since then. On February 25, the EU and US imposed sanctions on Putin himself. On February 26, the US and European countries announced an agreement to cut some (but not all) Russian banks off from SWIFT, the global messaging system that enables most international transactions, which will make it very difficult for Russia to make transactions beyond its borders. (Japan also signed on to SWIFT actions on February 27.) The US and its allies have said they will target Russia’s central bank, specifically its foreign reserves that Moscow needs to help support its currency. The US has continued to add penalties, including joining other countries in closing US airspace to Russian aircraft, and sanctioning more than a dozen oligarchs.

Such aid, according to a February 26 tweet by State Department spokesperson Ned Price, will be provided “immediately” and include “anti-tank and air defense capabilities.” Other European and NATO countries are also stepping up their assistance, including Germany, which reversed a long-standing policy of not sending lethal aid to conflict zones.

How to punish Russia for Ukraine

Russia knows that the US and its partners do not want to commit themselves militarily, and, as Putin launched his invasion, he offered an ominous warning as he touted Russia’s nuclear arsenal: “There should be no doubt that any potential aggressor will face defeat and ominous consequences should it directly attack our country.” On February 27, Putin escalated that threat by putting the country’s nuclear deterrent forces on high alert.

NATO has vowed to protect its members from any Russian aggression. On February 25, NATO announced that it was activating part of its NATO Response Force — a 40,000-troop unit modernized after the 2014 Crimea invasion — to protect allies on NATO’s eastern flank. “We are now deploying the NATO Response Force for the first time in a collective defense context. We speak about thousands of troops. We speak about air and maritime capabilities,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said.

Yet these are largely defensive measures, which means most of the punishment against Russia will come in the form of economic sanctions. Still, the West is starting to shift from an original hesitancy to impose the most severe costs on Russia over fears of what it might mean for Europe, the US, and the rest of the global economy — and what Russia might do to retaliate.

They’re not all the way there, however. For example, even the SWIFT action is expected to leave some carve-outs so Russia can still export gas to Europe. The tougher the sanctions on Russia, the harder it will hit the US and especially European economies, so leaders are still trying to soften the impact. But the fallout from these punishments — along with other measures, like the EU and United States barring Russia from their airspace — is being felt in Russia, as the ruble crashes and analysts warn of a deep recession.

Prepare for higher gas prices thanks to Russia — and more inflation

A way out of this war is difficult to contemplate as bombs are falling on Ukraine, but the US and its allies are going to have to do careful diplomacy to isolate and put pressure on Russia in the long term — and create incentives for Moscow to stop its assault on Ukraine. The US and its allies are also likely going to have to decide how much they want, or can, support Ukraine as it battles Russia.

“The real question, I think, is going to come down to what extent the West can and will try to support and supply a long-term insurgency against Russia,” said Paul D’Anieri, an expert on Eastern European and post-Soviet politics at the University of California Riverside. “And what level of success does Russia have in fighting back against? Unfortunately, it seems like the best strategy for peace right now is when enough Russians die, that the Russians decide it’s not worth it anymore.”

As we know the new COVID-19 disease appeared in China towards the end of 2019. Therefore it was named COVID-19 which is an acronym for Corona Virus Disease 2019.

Data from the World Integrated Trade Solution, however, shows something astonishing:

“in 2017 and 2018 – two years before COVID-19 – hundreds of millions of test kits for COVID-19 were distributed worldwide.”

This baffling data was discovered by someone on September 5, 2020, who posted it on social media. The next day it went viral all over the world.

On September 6 the WITS suddenly changed the original designation ‘COVID-19’ into the vague ‘Medical Test Kits’.

This is not allowed in trade, because you always have to be specific. There are many types of test kits for different diseases.

The fact that they removed the specification ‘COVID-19’, after this data became known worldwide, proves that they don’t want anyone to know about it.

The same goes for the rest of the world.

Australia, Russia, India, China, America, Africa… it’s wilderness for the most part. Our planet isn’t nearly as populated as Bill Gates wants us to believe. This world map shows it clearly…

Most of the earth is totally void of any human presence. So the idea that the world is vastly overpopulated and is therefor bound to give rise to an imminent global pandemic is a lie.

The Gates also claimed that air travel was sure to create a global pandemic. But countless people have been traveling in airplanes the past century.

Did that give rise to constant outbreaks of global pandemics? Of course not!

11. 2020 Coronavirus Pandemic Predicted In 2013

Back in 2013 a musician wrote a song called PANDEMIC. In his lyrics he described a global pandemic that kills millions, shuts down economies and gives rise to riots.

His song literally described in great detail what we are seeing in our world today, seven years later.

He even mentioned the exact year of the pandemic: 2020, and the specific type of virus: a coronavirus. (6)

This song also predicted the riots that are now raging throughout America:

In 2018 The Institute for Disease Modeling made a video in which they show a flu virus originating in China, from the area of Wuhan, and spreading all over the world, killing millions. They called it ‘A Simulation For A Global Flu Pandemic.’ That is exactly what happened, two years later.

The past years several movies and television series were produced, about… a global coronavirus pandemic!

Another film called ’Contagion’ shows how a coronavirus spreads globally with social distancing, face masks, lock-downs, washing of hands etc. as a result.

Clearly the flexing of authority is the desired response. But it gets worse, according to this ‘Scenario of the Future’:

‘In developed countries, this heightened oversight took many forms: biometric IDs for all citizens, for example, and tighter regulation of key industries whose stability was deemed vital to national interests.’

Handbook For Global Control

Now that the announced pandemic is indeed here, the same Rockefeller Foundation came forward with step two: a handbook on how to implement new control systems during this pandemic. Only when all the required control networks are in place, can the world open up again.

When you combine the two Rockefeller documents, you see the plan:

1) First they announce a global pandemic with a coronavirus and say what it should lead to: a whole new level of authoritarian control.
2) Secondly they give practical steps on how to apply this control system.

According to their ‘Scenario of the future’ the entire world population should get a digital ID that indicates who has received all the vaccines. Without sufficient vaccinations, access to schools, concerts, churches, public transport etc. will be denied.

Now in 2020 that is exactly what Bill Gates and many governments are calling for.

Western Countries 2022

The Western World, also referred to as simply the West, is a term that can mean different things depending upon the speaker and the context. It is sometimes used incorrectly as a synonym for countries in the Western Hemisphere or even for just Western Europe on its own. However, its true meaning is somewhat more nuanced.

The most widely accepted modern definition of the «Western World» is based not upon geographical location but upon the cultural (or when appropriate, political or economic) identities of the countries in question. Using this definition, the Western World includes Europe as well as any countries whose cultures are strongly influenced by European values or whose populations include many people descended from European colonists—for example Australia, New Zealand, and most countries in North and South America (see «The modern meaning of the Western World (the Latin West)» below).

The Origin of the term «The Western World»

The concept of the «Western World» originated in the actions of the Roman emperor Diocletian, who chose in 285-286 CE to divide his empire into two halves, each with its own separate capital, government, and church. On one side was what we now call the Western Roman Empire, also known as the Occident (Latin for «sunset» or «western»), which included Italy and the European and African countries west of it. On the other side was the Eastern Roman Empire, or Orient (Latin for «rise» or «east»), which encompassed Greece, Egypt, and the regions that are now Turkey, Syria, Israel, and other Middle Eastern countries. Roughly a century later (410-476 CE), the West Roman Empire collapsed, but the East Roman Empire would last another 1000 years (and later be renamed the Byzantine Empire), until conquered by the Ottomans in 1453.

These differing conditions led to tension between the Roman Catholic Church, which served the former Western Roman Empire, and the Eastern Orthodox Church, which served the Eastern Roman empire. Making matter worse was a pervasive cultural belief, inspired by a claim from the ancient Greek historian Herodotus that the Greeks defeated the Persians in 480-479 BCE because «free people fight better than slaves», that the people of the west were somehow more noble or free than those of the east.

This animosity deepened the political and cultural rift between the two sides and helped propagate and reinforce the notion that the two sides were plainly different. Thus, the «Western World» became the western portion of Europe (up to Italy) and the East came to mean Eastern Europe, Asia and all its subregions: The Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia, North Africa, and the Far East.

However, this original definition is virtually extinct today—in fact, it is painfully inadequate, given that it fails to include new Western World countries such as Australia and New Zealand (both «Western» countries that are geographically located in the Eastern Hemisphere) and all of North and South America.

Westernization and the new Western World

The culture of the Western World evolved quickly after the collapse of the West Roman Empire, influenced by the traditions of the Renaissance, the Protestant Reformation, and the Age of Enlightenment. Furthermore, when the Ottoman empire closed off the Silk Road in 1453 CE, Western European countries such as France, Spain, and Great Britain sent explorers all over the world in search of new trade routes and new lands. These explorers paved the way for «Western» culture to spread all throughout the world, from the newly «discovered» Americas to the islands of Oceania. This mass exportation of culture to the rest of the world came to be known as «Westernization.»

By the mid-20th century, Western culture had become widespread throughout the world with the help of mass media, such as television, film, radio, and music. The term «Western culture» is used broadly to refer to traditions, social norms, religious beliefs, technologies, and political systems. Because the culture is so widespread today, the term «Western World» has taken on a cultural, economic, and political definition—but those definitions can differ from one another.

The Cold War West

In the aftermath of World War II, «Western World» took on a new political definition: It was used to describe countries that had democratic, capitalist governments and were aligned alongside the United States, France, and the United Kingdom. Also referred to as «First World countries» or the «Cold War West,» this group of nations stood in contrast to the Second World countries of the U.S.S.R.-led communist Soviet bloc.

The Rich West

One lesser-known modern variation of the Western World is the «Rich West,» which is specifically used when discussing and comparing national economies. By this definition, Western World includes European-settled countries with GDPs per capita higher than US$10,000. This threshold excludes many Central and South American countries included in the other definitions but includes several former communist countries that were not part of the Cold War West.

The modern meaning of the Western World (the Latin West)

Today, the most widely used definition of the Western World, also known as the «Latin West,» is based entirely on culture rather than geography. In this usage, Western World refers to all of the countries of Western Europe, as well as those countries shaped by Western European culture. For example, countries such as the United States and Australia, which were once British colonies and which adopted Western European Christianity (Catholic and Protestant churches), which use the Latin alphabet, and whose populations include many people descended from European colonists.

In practical terms, this means the Western World typically includes most countries of the European Union as well as the U.K., Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. However, there are also two sub-regions that may or may not be included. First is the Orthodox World, which collects the countries of Eastern Europe, such as Russia, Greece, and Slovakia. Second is Latin America, which includes Mexico, Peru, and the other countries of Central and South America. As mentioned, these groupings may be considered part of the Western World or may be broken out on their own.

The non-Western world

Of course, many countries clearly do not belong to the Western World, the Orthodox World, or Latin America. Most social scientists divide these countries into three overlapping regions: the Eastern World, which includes all of Asia and the Middle East; the Arab World, which comprises the Middle East and North Africa; and Africa, which includes the entire continent of Africa and Madagascar.

World’s Best Restaurants 2020

Before lockdown, our anonymous critic traveled to as many countries as she could to find the world’s most incredible food.

Early this year, our roving critic, Besha Rodell, once again set off on what was to be a round-the-world research trip in search of the restaurants that best capture the spirit of their communities—the second annual World’s Best Restaurants from Travel + Leisure and Food & Wine. She explored Australia and New Zealand, Latin America, and the Caribbean, and had just begun her U.S. tasting tour when the situation began to escalate and it was time to send her home. (You can read more about her early adventures and the process of compiling this year’s list here.)

Still, with the global hospitality industry in crisis, it seemed more important than ever to recognize the chefs and restaurateurs doing incredible work around the world. When international travel returns to normal, we’ll resume scouting out spots around the globe and unveil the complete lineup of winners. For now, the restaurants below represent the first portion of this year’s World’s Best Restaurants list—we can’t wait to bring you the rest.

Momofuku Seiōbo (Sydney, Australia)

In many ways, Momofuku Seiōbo is antithetical to the mission of the WBR list, which is to shine a light on restaurants that express the culture of their locations. This is a slick and darkly moody Caribbean restaurant owned by an American restaurant group, bumping reggae in the back hallway of a hulking casino in Sydney, Australia. But rules are meant to be broken. Chef Paul Carmichael, who is originally from Barbados, approaches the food of his homeland with lyricism, specificity, and an unwavering dedication to deliciousness. Carmichael has worked extensively in Puerto Rico and New York City, and did his senior thesis at the Culinary Institute of America on the food and history of the Caribbean. Cou cou, the unofficial national dish of Barbados, is made here with fresh corn and sterling caviar rather than the traditional cornmeal and flying fish roe, giving it a sweet and salty elegance. If you look closely, Momofuku Seiobo does reveal things about its location, in the riotously beautiful Australian produce used by Carmichael. Intensely flavored sea urchin is sandwiched between impossibly thin, crisp cassava chips. Marron—the seasonal Australian freshwater shellfish that’s like lobster but better—is smothered in a bright sofrito. This is undeniably one of the best restaurants in the world, and Carmichael deserves all the recognition afforded his famous boss and possibly more. seiobo.momofuku.com

Pasture (Auckland, New Zealand)

On paper, Ed Verner’s Auckland restaurant looks and sounds much like any ambitious fine-dining spot. Even the name, Pasture, references ubiquitous and vague agrarian farm-to-table values. But I was pleasantly surprised at every turn during my late summer meal, which is served at a counter to only 12 guests each evening, six at a time. The playlist sets the mood, veering from Indeep’s «Last Night a DJ Saved My Life» to The Cure’s «Lullaby» without a hint of incongruity. In front of me, a wood fire blazed in a multi-functional oven, with meat and fish and vegetables hanging near the heat or nestled in the coals. Much of Verner’s food straddles the line between sweet and savory: a bracing cool, clear soup made from the husk and silk of corn, served alongside a peach dusted with fennel pollen; a slice of John Dory sashimi wrapped around pickled chamomile that is floral but restrained and utterly lovely. The meal is made up of more than a dozen dishes, most of them tiny and bright, leaving you room to truly enjoy the final savory course: 120-day aged Wagyu that has been cooking in that fiery oven throughout the meal. Fleet Restaurant (Brunswick Heads, Australia)

This stretch of lush landscape along the northern New South Wales coastline ought to be on any Australian visitor’s bucket list. Known as the Northern Rivers area, its unique topography sees a network of tidal rivers that wind through the flats between gorgeous beaches and leafy hinterlands. Byron Bay is the famous anchor town, but the tiny riverside community of Brunswick Heads has transformed in recent years, mainly thanks to Fleet, a slip of a restaurant on the quiet end of the town’s commercial district. There are only 14 seats, and they are hard to secure, but do so and you’ll be rewarded with everything wonderful about modern Australian dining. The tone is set by co-owner Astrid McCormack, who delivers some of the warmest and most gracious service I’ve ever experienced. Her partner, co-owner and chef Josh Lewis, executes a tasting menu that makes the best of the region’s beautiful produce and seafood, playing with contrasts and textures in ways both thoughtful and ingenious. The vegetal tang of a whole fresh radish is tempered with the sweet nuttiness of a honey-and-sesame-seed coating, as part of a flurry of small snacks to start. Raw oysters are nestled in sheep-milk yogurt and showered with shaved macadamia for a soft, tart, briny mouthful that is pure pleasure. Sweetbreads are turned into the world’s creamiest schnitzel, served as a «sanga» between soft rounds of white bread with a generous glurp of anchovy and mustard mayo. Fresh, delicious food; interesting and thoughtful drinks service; truly caring hospitality. «We were in Tokyo in January with the kids, and we had the most amazing time as a family. (We really loved the ramen shop afuri in sangenjaya and ate there three nights in a row!) When the pandemic first hit, there were ridiculously low-priced flights to Japan, so we booked some departing on boxing day this year. I can’t really see that we’re going to be able to go, but it was a nice idea!»

Lasai (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)

It would be easy to tell you that chef Rafael Costa e Silva uses only ingredients from Rio de Janeiro state for his multi-course tasting menus at Lasai, and that many of those ingredients come from the chef’s own gardens. I could wax poetic about the airy modern feel of the town-house dining room and the vaguely Basque inspiration for the cooking. But none of those descriptions really do justice to the feel of this place, its subtle, delicious exuberance. There’s a studied vibrancy to everything that hits the table at Lasai, from the brightly flavored fruit-based cocktails to the elegant, architecturally plated dishes served throughout the evening to the diverse and thoughtfully chosen wine pairings. Mini empanadas, their casing dyed magenta and tasting of sweet beets, are stuffed with a luscious cashew filling; local fish is paired with hearts of palm and creamy coconut. Dishes arrive in a colorful whirlwind and leave you giddy. Costa e Silva is a master at contrasts, of hue and flavor and texture—everything tastes bright and vital. El Chato (Bogotá, Colombia)

Nowhere in Colombia expresses the colorful, exuberant personality of that country better than El Chato, a leafy brick-floored restaurant that thrums with good vibes. Friends chatter over a soundtrack of Grace Jones and Talking Heads, a serious cocktail program with a tropical bent adds to the fun, and chef Alvaro Clavijo—who has cooked in restaurants in Paris, New York City, Barcelona and Copenhagen—delivers food that is approachable yet wildly creative. Crab comes with avocado, cilantro, and funky fermented jicama.Combinations like shiitake mushrooms with pine, honey, and bee pollen taste at once revelatory and exactly right. Boragó, nestled into the foot of Santiago, Chile’s highest mountain, is almost a parody of a high-concept restaurant. The room is huge and modern, with glass walls looking out towards the peak; the glassed-in kitchen is full of serious workers brandishing tweezers, the drinking water is Chile’s finest rainwater; and the waiters present each precious plate with hushed veneration. And yet, from the first reverently placed dish—perhaps a sweet-tart edible twig dotted with brilliant pink flowers—you’ll realize that this restaurant is way more joyous than it lets on. Chef Rodolfo Guzmán is very focused on the ingredients of Chile and the work of Chilean foragers, and the result is a 16-or-so-course meal that touches on every color and flavor and emotion you could hope to experience in a single evening. It is possible to arrive on this leafy side street in Rio de Janeiro’s Jardim Botanico neighborhood and completely miss Sud, which is located in a house behind a large white wall. There is no way to know you’re in the right spot before you’ve entered what could easily be someone’s private property. Many days the only giveaway is the line of people snaking out the gate, waiting for a spot at one of 12 tables. They’re here for the heartfelt cooking of Roberta Sudbrack, who owned a highly awarded eponymous fine dining restaurant in Rio from 2005 to 2017. In 2018, Sudbrack opened this far more casual café-restaurant, cooking much of the menu in a large wood-fired oven that sits at one end of the cozy dining room. The food has the feel of home cooking, if it were made by your most culinarily talented friend with access to the most beautiful produce imaginable. Chef Nelly Córdova Morillo is a former lawyer who grew up eating traditional Chontal cooking on her grandparents’ farm. Her restaurant celebrates the pre-Hispanic cuisine of the region, serving traditional dishes made with traditional ingredients cooked over wood harvested from the surrounding landscape. This means «tortilla Chontal,» a type of fresh-masa quesadilla served with a dark green salsa that tastes of the forest, alongside frothy pineapple agua fresca. Dark, complex mole poblano smothers moist turkey and comes scattered with sesame seeds. Scarlet shrimp are piled atop a base of warm masa, fresh and vibrant and stupefying in their deliciousness. But his flavors are anything but retro. Soup made with local breadfruit and smoked fish is blended with coconut milk for a creamy, silky finish. A genre of Speculative Fiction stories (sometimes called «Uchronia» or «Anachronism»), set in a world where one or more historical events unfolded quite differently than they did in the real world. Essentially, this is What Could Have Been turned into an entire narrative genre.

Often set some time after the event (called a «Point of Divergence», or POD, by fans of the genre), such stories typically describe a Present Day world vastly changed by the difference, or follow another major historical event in light of the change. Sometimes linked with a Time Travel story; the point of divergence is often caused by travelers from «our» timeline (OTL in alt-history parlance) seeking to effect a desired change. The protagonists may be original characters or actual historical figures. Lampshade Hanging occurs often in these types of stories (an Allohistorical Allusion); often, a character will stop to muse on what the world would be like if history had gone the way it did in the real world. Which, we suppose, is Truth in Television. after all, lampshading this trope is the entire point of alternate histories.

The setting of an alternate history is often described as a What If?. Popular alternate history settings include:

A secondary type, sometimes called «honorary alternate history», consists of Speculative Fiction stories written a considerable period of time ago, and set in a time period which has since passed. This is what happens to stories set 20 Minutes into the Future when the twenty minutes have passed. This type of unintentional alternate history has its own trope: Failed Future Forecast.

In real life, Counterfactual History is a real discipline, looking at reasonable conjectures. For example, historians have carefully examined the threat of invasion of Britain by Germany in 1940 and suggested that, though British defense was rushed and rudimentary at that point, so were German attack plans. Thus, Germany would almost certainly have established a beach head, but would not have succeeded in maintaining it. note The German navy was already inferior to the British navy before the start of the war and that inferiority was made much worse by severe losses suffered by the German navy during the conquest of Norway. Thus they would have no way of stopping the Royal Navy from establishing control of the Channel and cutting off any German troops landed in England from supply and reinforcement. Unlike its literary equivalent, scholarly counter-factual history tends to focus on the short-term effects, as extrapolating long-term trends into the future has proven to be tricky even for what did happen.

It is different from an Alternate Universe, where the difference is in the fictional elements of the story. «What if Superman’s ship landed in Soviet Russia?» or «What if Charles Xavier died before creating the X-Men?» are examples. However, the alternate universe may lead to alternate history as well: Alternate Reed Richards may change human society, Dr. Doom may give up ruling Latveria and begin to conquer or destroy actual countries, or Red Skull may be elected President. In those cases, the alternate history is a side consequence, not the basic premise.

Bear in mind that, other than the point of divergence and the consequences of it, the setting must still be close to the real world. A real time period filled with unrealistic stuff at all corners is not alternate history, it’s something else. For example, the middle ages filled with elves, dwarves, orcs and magic is a Medieval European Fantasy, and a more modern setting with them is an Urban Fantasy. If the point of divergence is an unrealistic event (for example, «what if an advanced alien ship crashed in Germany during WWII and the Nazis got all sorts of alien tech from it?»), then see Weird Historical War.

Often, the change’s ultimate source is For Want of a Nail. If «historically unimportant» characters are involved, expect In Spite of a Nail. For less drastic changeovers (such as slight differences between their world and ours), see Never Was This Universe. Some settings will undo these changes with Rubber-Band History.

restaurant, establishment where refreshments or meals may be procured by the public. The public dining room that ultimately came to be known as the restaurant originated in France, and the French have continued to make major contributions to the restaurant’s development.

The first restaurant proprietor is believed to have been one A. Boulanger, a soup vendor, who opened his business in Paris in 1765. The sign above his door advertised restoratives, or restaurants, referring to the soups and broths available within. The institution took its name from that sign, and restaurant now denotes a public eating place in English, French, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian, Romanian, and many other languages, with some variations. For example, in Spanish and Portuguese the word becomes restaurante, in Italian it is ristorante, in Swedish restaurang, in Russian restoran, and in Polish restauracia.

Although inns and hostelries often served paying guests meals from the host’s table, or table d’hôte, and beverages were sold in cafés, Boulanger’s restaurant was probably the first public place where any diner might order a meal from a menu offering a choice of dishes.

Boulanger operated a modest establishment; it was not until 1782 that La Grande Taverne de Londres, the first luxury restaurant, was founded in Paris. The owner, Antoine Beauvilliers, a leading culinary writer and gastronomic authority, later wrote L’Art du cuisinier (1814), a cookbook that became a standard work on French culinary art. Beauvilliers achieved a reputation as an accomplished restaurateur and host, and the French aphorist and gastronomic chronicler Jean-Athelme Brillat-Savarin, a frequent guest, credited Beauvilliers with being

the first to combine the four essentials of an elegant room, smart waiters, a choice cellar, and superior cooking.

Brillat-Savarin also noted that Beauvilliers would

point out here a dish to be avoided, there one to be ordered instantly…; and send, at the same time, for wine from the cellar, the key of which he produced from his own pocket; in a word, he assumed so gracious and engaging a tone, that all these extra articles seemed so many favours conferred by him.

Before the French Revolution, aristocratic French households maintained elaborate culinary establishments, but when the Revolution reduced the number of private households offering employment, many chefs and cooks found employment in restaurant kitchens or opened their own eating establishments. By 1804 Paris had more than 500 restaurants, producing most of the great chefs of history and creating many famous dishes.

French restaurants of the 19th century

During the Napoleonic era the Palais-Royal, the colonnaded, tree-lined area adjacent the Louvre, became the site of many of the finest restaurants in Paris. The menu of the Véry, a leading restaurant of the era, listed a dozen soups, two dozen fish dishes, 15 beef entrées, 20 mutton entrées, and scores of side dishes. The novelist Honoré de Balzac often dined at the Véry, consuming prodigious quantities of oysters, fish, meat dishes, fruits, wines, and liqueurs. It was a favourite haunt of gourmet-author Grimod de la Reynière, who considered it the finest restaurant in France.

The Véry was absorbed in 1869 by the neighbouring Le Grand Véfour. This restaurant was still in business in the 2020s and was regarded as one of the finest eating places in France. Another outstanding Paris establishment of the 19th century was the Café Foy, later called Chez Bignon, a favourite dining place of the English novelist William Makepeace Thackeray and of the Italian composer Gioacchino Rossini, who lived in the same building. The Café de Paris, on the Boulevard des Italiens, was the first of many restaurants in Paris and elsewhere that have operated under this name. Other favourite eating places were the Rocher de Cancale, on the rue Montorgueil, famous for its oysters and fish, and the Restaurant Durand, at the corner of the Place de la Madeleine and the rue Royale, a favourite gathering place of politicians, artists, and writers, including the authors Anatole France and Émile Zola.

The most illustrious of all 19th-century Paris restaurants was the Café Anglais, on the Boulevard des Italiens at the corner of the rue Marivaux, where the chef, Adolphe Dugléré, created classic dishes such as sole Dugléré (filets poached with tomatoes and served with a cream sauce having a fish stock base) and the famous sorrel soup potage Germiny. On June 7, 1867, the Café Anglais served the now-famous “Three Emperors Dinner” for three royal guests visiting Paris to attend the Universal Exposition. The diners included Tsar Alexander II of Russia; his son the tsarevich (later the tsar Alexander III); and King William I of Prussia, later the first emperor of Germany. The meal included soufflés with creamed chicken (à la reine), fillets of sole, escalloped turbot, chicken à la portugaise (cooked with tomatoes, onions, and garlic), lobster à la parisienne (round, flat medallions glazed with a gelatin-mayonnaise mixture and elaborately decorated), ducklings à la rouennaise (the carcasses stuffed with liver and pressed, presented on a platter with boned slices of the breast and the grilled legs, and served with a red wine sauce containing pureed liver), ortolans (small game birds) on toast, and eight different wines.

Although the Café Anglais closed in 1913, when the building was demolished, the table setting for this dinner is now displayed at La Tour d’Argent, the oldest surviving restaurant in Paris.

Toward the end of the 19th century, in the gaudy and extravagant era known as la belle époque, the luxurious Maxim’s, on the rue Royale, became the social and culinary centre of Paris. The restaurant temporarily declined after World War I but recovered under new management, to become an outstanding gastronomic shrine.

France produced many of the world’s finest chefs, including Georges-Auguste Escoffier, who organized the kitchens for the luxury hotels owned by César Ritz, developing the so-called brigade de cuisine, or kitchen team, consisting of highly trained experts each with clearly defined duties. These teams included a chef, or gros bonnet, in charge of the kitchen; a sauce chef, or deputy; an entremettier, in charge of preparation of soups, vegetables, and sweet courses; a rôtisseur to prepare roasts and fried or grilled meats; and the garde manger, in charge of all supplies and cold dishes. In Escoffier’s time, the duties and responsibilities of each functionary were sharply defined, but in modern times, rising labour costs and the need for faster service have broken down such rigidly defined duties. In the kitchens of even the leading modern restaurants, duties at the peak of the dinner-hour preparations are likely to overlap widely, with efficiency maintained amid seeming chaos and confusion.

Building REST services with Spring

REST has quickly become the de-facto standard for building web services on the web because they’re easy to build and easy to consume.

There’s a much larger discussion to be had about how REST fits in the world of microservices, but — for this tutorial — let’s just look at building RESTful services.

Why REST? REST embraces the precepts of the web, including its architecture, benefits, and everything else. This is no surprise given its author, Roy Fielding, was involved in probably a dozen specs which govern how the web operates.

What benefits? The web and its core protocol, HTTP, provide a stack of features:

Redirection and forwarding

Security (encryption and authentication)

These are all critical factors on building resilient services. But that is not all. The web is built out of lots of tiny specs, hence it’s been able to evolve easily, without getting bogged down in «standards wars».

Developers are able to draw upon 3rd party toolkits that implement these diverse specs and instantly have both client and server technology at their fingertips.

By building on top of HTTP, REST APIs provide the means to build:

Backwards compatible APIs

A spectrum of stateless to stateful services

What’s important to realize is that REST, however ubiquitous, is not a standard, per se, but an approach, a style, a set of constraints on your architecture that can help you build web-scale systems. In this tutorial we will use the Spring portfolio to build a RESTful service while leveraging the stackless features of REST.

Getting Started

As we work through this tutorial, we’ll use Spring Boot. Go to Spring Initializr and add the following dependencies to a project:

Spring Boot can work with any IDE. You can use Eclipse, IntelliJ IDEA, Netbeans, etc. The Spring Tool Suite is an open-source, Eclipse-based IDE distribution that provides a superset of the Java EE distribution of Eclipse. It includes features that make working with Spring applications even easier. It is, by no means, required. But consider it if you want that extra oomph for your keystrokes. Here’s a video demonstrating how to get started with STS and Spring Boot. This is a general introduction to familiarize you with the tools.

The Story so Far…​

Let’s start off with the simplest thing we can construct. In fact, to make it as simple as possible, we can even leave out the concepts of REST. (Later on, we’ll add REST to understand the difference.)

Big picture: We’re going to create a simple payroll service that manages the employees of a company. We’ll store employee objects in a (H2 in-memory) database, and access them (via something called JPA ). Then we’ll wrap that with something that will allow access over the internet (called the Spring MVC layer).

The following code defines an Employee in our system.

Despite being small, this Java class contains much:

@Entity is a JPA annotation to make this object ready for storage in a JPA-based data store.

a custom constructor is created when we need to create a new instance, but don’t yet have an id.

With this domain object definition, we can now turn to Spring Data JPA to handle the tedious database interactions.

Spring Data JPA repositories are interfaces with methods supporting creating, reading, updating, and deleting records against a back end data store. Some repositories also support data paging, and sorting, where appropriate. Spring Data synthesizes implementations based on conventions found in the naming of the methods in the interface.

There are multiple repository implementations besides JPA. You can use Spring Data MongoDB, Spring Data GemFire, Spring Data Cassandra, etc. For this tutorial, we’ll stick with JPA.

Spring makes accessing data easy. By simply declaring the following EmployeeRepository interface we automatically will be able to

Create new Employees

Update existing ones

Find Employees (one, all, or search by simple or complex properties)

Spring Data’s repository solution makes it possible to sidestep data store specifics and instead solve a majority of problems using domain-specific terminology.

Believe it or not, this is enough to launch an application! A Spring Boot application is, at a minimum, a public static void main entry-point and the @SpringBootApplication annotation. This tells Spring Boot to help out, wherever possible.

@SpringBootApplication is a meta-annotation that pulls in component scanning, autoconfiguration, and property support. We won’t dive into the details of Spring Boot in this tutorial, but in essence, it will fire up a servlet container and serve up our service.

Nevertheless, an application with no data isn’t very interesting, so let’s preload it. The following class will get loaded automatically by Spring:

What happens when it gets loaded?

Spring Boot will run ALL CommandLineRunner beans once the application context is loaded.

This runner will request a copy of the EmployeeRepository you just created.

Using it, it will create two entities and store them.

This isn’t the whole log, but just the key bits of preloading data. (Indeed, check out the whole console. It’s glorious.)

HTTP is the Platform

To wrap your repository with a web layer, you must turn to Spring MVC. Thanks to Spring Boot, there is little in infrastructure to code. Instead, we can focus on actions:

@RestController indicates that the data returned by each method will be written straight into the response body instead of rendering a template.

An EmployeeRepository is injected by constructor into the controller.

EmployeeNotFoundException is an exception used to indicate when an employee is looked up but not found.

When an EmployeeNotFoundException is thrown, this extra tidbit of Spring MVC configuration is used to render an HTTP 404:

@ResponseBody signals that this advice is rendered straight into the response body.

@ExceptionHandler configures the advice to only respond if an EmployeeNotFoundException is thrown.

The body of the advice generates the content. In this case, it gives the message of the exception.

To launch the application, either right-click the public static void main in PayRollApplication and select Run from your IDE, or:

If you are using Windows Command Prompt to issue cURL commands, chances are the below command won’t work properly. You must either pick a terminal that support single quoted arguments, or use double quotes and then escape the ones inside the JSON.

Then it stores newly created employee and sends it back to us:

And we can see the change reflected in the output.

The way you construct your service can have significant impacts. In this situation, we said update, but replace is a better description. For example, if the name was NOT provided, it would instead get nulled out.

Finally, you can delete users like this:

This is all well and good, but do we have a RESTful service yet? (If you didn’t catch the hint, the answer is no.)

What makes something RESTful?

So far, you have a web-based service that handles the core operations involving employee data. But that’s not enough to make things «RESTful».

Pretty URLs like /employees/3 aren’t REST.

Having all the CRUD operations laid out isn’t REST.

In fact, what we have built so far is better described as RPC (Remote Procedure Call). That’s because there is no way to know how to interact with this service. If you published this today, you’d also have to write a document or host a developer’s portal somewhere with all the details.

This statement of Roy Fielding’s may further lend a clue to the difference between REST and RPC:

I am getting frustrated by the number of people calling any HTTP-based interface a REST API. Today’s example is the SocialSite REST API. That is RPC. It screams RPC. There is so much coupling on display that it should be given an X rating.

What needs to be done to make the REST architectural style clear on the notion that hypertext is a constraint? In other words, if the engine of application state (and hence the API) is not being driven by hypertext, then it cannot be RESTful and cannot be a REST API. Period. Is there some broken manual somewhere that needs to be fixed?

The side effect of NOT including hypermedia in our representations is that clients MUST hard code URIs to navigate the API. This leads to the same brittle nature that predated the rise of e-commerce on the web. It’s a signal that our JSON output needs a little help.

Introducing Spring HATEOAS, a Spring project aimed at helping you write hypermedia-driven outputs. To upgrade your service to being RESTful, add this to your build:

This tiny library will give us the constructs to define a RESTful service and then render it in an acceptable format for client consumption.

A critical ingredient to any RESTful service is adding links to relevant operations. To make your controller more RESTful, add links like this:

This is very similar to what we had before, but a few things have changed:

linkTo(methodOn(EmployeeController.class).one(id)).withSelfRel() asks that Spring HATEOAS build a link to the EmployeeController ‘s one() method, and flag it as a self link.

Roy Fielding encourages building APIs with the same techniques that made the web successful, and links are one of them.

If you restart the application and query the employee record of Bilbo, you’ll get a slightly different response than earlier:

When your curl output gets more complex it can become hard to read. Use this or other tips to prettify the json returned by curl:

HAL is a lightweight mediatype that allows encoding not just data but also hypermedia controls, alerting consumers to other parts of the API they can navigate toward. In this case, there is a «self» link (kind of like a this statement in code) along with a link back to the aggregate root.

To make the aggregate root ALSO more RESTful, you want to include top level links while ALSO including any RESTful components within.

So we turn this

Don’t let that first statement slip by. What does «encapsulating collections» mean? Collections of employees?

Since we’re talking REST, it should encapsulate collections of employee resources.

That’s why you fetch all the employees, but then transform them into a list of EntityModel objects. (Thanks Java 8 Streams!)

If you restart the application and fetch the aggregate root, you can see what it looks like now.

For this aggregate root, which serves up a collection of employee resources, there is a top-level «self» link. The «collection» is listed underneath the «_embedded» section; this is how HAL represents collections.

And each individual member of the collection has their information as well as related links.

What is the point of adding all these links? It makes it possible to evolve REST services over time. Existing links can be maintained while new links can be added in the future. Newer clients may take advantage of the new links, while legacy clients can sustain themselves on the old links. This is especially helpful if services get relocated and moved around. As long as the link structure is maintained, clients can STILL find and interact with things.

Simplifying Link Creation

In the code earlier, did you notice the repetition in single employee link creation? The code to provide a single link to an employee, as well as to create an «employees» link to the aggregate root, was shown twice. If that raised your concern, good! There’s a solution.

Simply put, you need to define a function that converts Employee objects to EntityModel objects. While you could easily code this method yourself, there are benefits down the road of implementing Spring HATEOAS’s RepresentationModelAssembler interface—which will do the work for you.

All the code you saw earlier in the controller can be moved into this class. And by applying Spring Framework’s @Component annotation, the assembler will be automatically created when the app starts.

To leverage this assembler, you only have to alter the EmployeeController by injecting the assembler in the constructor.

From here, you can use that assembler in the single-item employee method:

This code is almost the same, except instead of creating the EntityModel instance here, you delegate it to the assembler. Maybe that doesn’t look like much.

Applying the same thing in the aggregate root controller method is more impressive:

A key design goal of Spring HATEOAS is to make it easier to do The Right Thing™. In this scenario: adding hypermedia to your service without hard coding a thing.

At this stage, you’ve created a Spring MVC REST controller that actually produces hypermedia-powered content! Clients that don’t speak HAL can ignore the extra bits while consuming the pure data. Clients that DO speak HAL can navigate your empowered API.

But that is not the only thing needed to build a truly RESTful service with Spring.

Evolving REST APIs

With one additional library and a few lines of extra code, you have added hypermedia to your application. But that is not the only thing needed to make your service RESTful. An important facet of REST is the fact that it’s neither a technology stack nor a single standard.

REST is a collection of architectural constraints that when adopted make your application much more resilient. A key factor of resilience is that when you make upgrades to your services, your clients don’t suffer from downtime.

In the «olden» days, upgrades were notorious for breaking clients. In other words, an upgrade to the server required an update to the client. In this day and age, hours or even minutes of downtime spent doing an upgrade can cost millions in lost revenue.

Some companies require that you present management with a plan to minimize downtime. In the past, you could get away with upgrading at 2:00 a.m. on a Sunday when load was at a minimum. But in today’s Internet-based e-commerce with international customers in other time zones, such strategies are not as effective.

SOAP-based services and CORBA-based services were incredibly brittle. It was hard to roll out a server that could support both old and new clients. With REST-based practices, it’s much easier. Especially using the Spring stack.

Supporting changes to the API

Uh oh. Didn’t think of that.

Downtime = lost money. Is management ready for that?

There is an old strategy that precedes REST by years.

Never delete a column in a database.

You can always add columns (fields) to a database table. But don’t take one away. The principle in RESTful services is the same.

Add new fields to your JSON representations, but don’t take any away. Like this:

And not only should you show this information in both the «old way» and the «new way», you should also process incoming data both ways.

How? Simple. Like this:

A «virtual» getter for the old name property, getName() is defined. It uses the firstName and lastName fields to produce a value.

Of course not EVERY change to your API is as simple as splitting a string or merging two strings. But it’s surely not impossible to come up with a set of transforms for most scenarios, right?

Don’t forget to go and change how you preload your database (in LoadDatabase ) to use this new constructor.

Proper Responses

Another step in the right direction involves ensuring that each of your REST methods returns a proper response. Update the POST method like this:

Spring MVC’s ResponseEntity is used to create an HTTP 201 Created status message. This type of response typically includes a Location response header, and we use the URI derived from the model’s self-related link.

Additionally, return the model-based version of the saved object.

With these tweaks in place, you can use the same endpoint to create a new employee resource, and use the legacy name field:

The output is shown below:

The PUT controller method needs similar tweaks:

The Employee object built from the save() operation is then wrapped using the EmployeeModelAssembler into an EntityModel object. Using the getRequiredLink() method, you can retrieve the Link created by the EmployeeModelAssembler with a SELF rel. This method returns a Link which must be turned into a URI with the toUri method.

Since we want a more detailed HTTP response code than 200 OK, we will use Spring MVC’s ResponseEntity wrapper. It has a handy static method created() where we can plug in the resource’s URI. It’s debatable if HTTP 201 Created carries the right semantics since we aren’t necessarily «creating» a new resource. But it comes pre-loaded with a Location response header, so run with it.

That employee resource has now been updated and the location URI sent back. Finally, update the DELETE operation suitably:

This returns an HTTP 204 No Content response.

Making changes to the fields in the Employee class will require coordination with your database team, so that they can properly migrate existing content into the new columns.

You are now ready for an upgrade that will NOT disturb existing clients while newer clients can take advantage of the enhancements!

By the way, are you worried about sending too much information over the wire? In some systems where every byte counts, evolution of APIs may need to take a backseat. But don’t pursue such premature optimization until you measure.

Building links into your REST API

So far, you’ve built an evolvable API with bare bones links. To grow your API and better serve your clients, you need to embrace the concept of Hypermedia as the Engine of Application State.

What does that mean? In this section, you’ll explore it in detail.

Business logic inevitably builds up rules that involve processes. The risk of such systems is we often carry such server-side logic into clients and build up strong coupling. REST is about breaking down such connections and minimizing such coupling.

To show how to cope with state changes without triggering breaking changes in clients, imagine adding a system that fulfills orders.

As a first step, define an Order record:

The class requires a JPA @Table annotation changing the table’s name to CUSTOMER_ORDER because ORDER is not a valid name for table.

It includes a description field as well as a status field.

Orders must go through a certain series of state transitions from the time a customer submits an order and it is either fulfilled or cancelled. This can be captured as a Java enum :

This enum captures the various states an Order can occupy. For this tutorial, let’s keep it simple.

To support interacting with orders in the database, you must define a corresponding Spring Data repository:

With this in place, you can now define a basic OrderController :

It contains the same REST controller setup as the controllers you’ve built so far.

The first two Spring MVC routes handle the aggregate root as well as a single item Order resource request.

The third Spring MVC route handles creating new orders, by starting them in the IN_PROGRESS state.

All the controller methods return one of Spring HATEOAS’s RepresentationModel subclasses to properly render hypermedia (or a wrapper around such a type).

But that would be wrong.

What happens when you introduce a new state in this flow? The placement of various buttons on the UI would probably be erroneous.

What if you changed the name of each state, perhaps while coding international support and showing locale-specific text for each state? That would most likely break all the clients.

Enter HATEOAS or Hypermedia as the Engine of Application State. Instead of clients parsing the payload, give them links to signal valid actions. Decouple state-based actions from the payload of data. In other words, when CANCEL and COMPLETE are valid actions, dynamically add them to the list of links. Clients only need show users the corresponding buttons when the links exist.

This decouples clients from having to know WHEN such actions are valid, reducing the risk of the server and its clients getting out of sync on the logic of state transitions.

Having already embraced the concept of Spring HATEOAS RepresentationModelAssembler components, putting such logic in the OrderModelAssembler would be the perfect place to capture this business rule:

If clients can adopt HAL and the ability to read links instead of simply reading the data of plain old JSON, they can trade in the need for domain knowledge about the order system. This naturally reduces coupling between client and server. And it opens the door to tuning the flow of order fulfillment without breaking clients in the process.

To round out order fulfillment, add the following to the OrderController for the cancel operation:

And add this to the OrderController as well for order completion:

This implements similar logic to prevent an Order status from being completed unless in the proper state.

Let’s update LoadDatabase to pre-load some Order ​s along with the Employee ​s it was loading before.

Now you can test things out!

To use the newly minted order service, just perform a few operations:

This HAL document immediately shows different links for each order, based upon its present state.

The first order, being COMPLETED only has the navigational links. The state transition links are not shown.

The second order, being IN_PROGRESS additionally has the cancel link as well as the complete link.

Try cancelling an order:

This response shows an HTTP 200 status code indicating it was successful. The response HAL document shows that order in its new state ( CANCELLED ). And the state-altering links gone.

If you try the same operation again…​

…​you see an HTTP 405 Method Not Allowed response. DELETE has become an invalid operation. The Problem response object clearly indicates that you aren’t allowed to «cancel» an order already in the «CANCELLED» status.

Additionally, trying to complete the same order also fails:

With all this in place, your order fulfillment service is capable of conditionally showing what operations are available. It also guards against invalid operations.

By leveraging the protocol of hypermedia and links, clients can be built sturdier and less likely to break simply because of a change in the data. And Spring HATEOAS eases building the hypermedia you need to serve to your clients.

Summary

Throughout this tutorial, you have engaged in various tactics to build REST APIs. As it turns out, REST isn’t just about pretty URIs and returning JSON instead of XML.

Instead, the following tactics help make your services less likely to break existing clients you may or may not control:

Don’t remove old fields. Instead, support them.

Use rel-based links so clients don’t have to hard code URIs.

Retain old links as long as possible. Even if you have to change the URI, keep the rels so older clients have a path onto the newer features.

Use links, not payload data, to instruct clients when various state-driving operations are available.

It may appear to be a bit of effort to build up RepresentationModelAssembler implementations for each resource type and to use these components in all of your controllers. But this extra bit of server-side setup (made easy thanks to Spring HATEOAS) can ensure the clients you control (and more importantly, those you don’t) can upgrade with ease as you evolve your API.

This concludes our tutorial on how to build RESTful services using Spring. Each section of this tutorial is managed as a separate subproject in a single github repo:

L ast year, as Russia faced a rising tide of coronavirus infections, Tatyana Bakalchuk stepped into the spotlight. Newly crowned as the country’s richest woman, the owner of online retail giant Wildberries released a video statement promising that digital merchants would rise to the challenge of lockdown.

Sitting alone on a large sofa with her hands clasped firmly in her lap, Bakalchuk outlined a set of rules for pandemic-era internet trading before attacking shopping malls and stores for their irresponsible approach to safety, arguing they should instead be repurposed as collection points for online orders. “Stay at home, and we’ll take care of you and your loved ones,” pledged the founder. “We’re a great country that has more than once gotten out of the most difficult situations.”

Such public leadership was a departure for the poetry-writing former English teacher. In her 16 years in business, Bakalchuk typically avoided media scrutiny and claimed in an interview last year that she aspired to a “quiet life.” But as Wildberries consolidates its position as Russia’s biggest online retailer — its unmissable pink-and-purple branding can be found from the Baltic Sea to the Pacific Ocean — she has stepped out of the shadows. In recent years, Bakalchuk has, among other things, appeared at business conferences, held public meetings with ministers, and even attended celebrity events in an attempt to boost her public profile. A Wildberries spokesperson, however, declined to answer questions for this article.

This rags-to-riches origin story makes Bakalchuk highly unusual in Russia, where the state controls huge swathes of the economy, and the wealthy elite is almost entirely male. And it means Bakalchuk stands out from the country’s other billionaires, the majority of whom made their fortunes, directly or indirectly, from the extraction of mineral resources. Just like Wildberries’ name — chosen for its evocations of color and dynamism — Bakalchuk is seen as a breath of fresh air in Russia’s business world. Cultivating this persona has opened the doors of government ministers keen to cultivate homegrown business success and helped Bakalchuk win a following among members of the younger generation.

Despite its healthy lead in the e-commerce industry, Wildberries’ total dominance is far from guaranteed. The market in Russia is unusual because it consists almost entirely of local firms, including state-backed ventures, and is far more fragmented than its Western and Asian counterparts. Most experts believe the sector is on the brink of a turbulent period that will see the emergence of a few major players. “The market is moving toward consolidation because of rapid growth, not via mergers and acquisitions,” said Fedor Virin, co-founder of Russian e-commerce analysis firm Data Insight. Competition to come out on top is intense, pitting influential billionaires against state-owned financial behemoths.

Wildberries has repeatedly denied ever receiving any significant outside investment, but many in the Russian e-commerce world are deeply skeptical of Bakalchuk’s “self-made” rhetoric, pointing to the company’s phenomenal growth and powerful friends as evidence. In 2019, year-on-year sales rose 88%, and analysts predict it will be over 100% in 2020, rising more than 2.5 times faster than the market as a whole. Even competitors with significant investments struggle to grow at these rates, fueling rumors of a secret investor or high-level state support. “There are concerns that a road is being cleared for Wildberries,” said retail sector analyst Aleksei Petrovsky.

The company’s business tactics unquestionably play a major role in its popularity among Russia’s 95 million active internet users (the largest in Europe). Wildberries operates a huge network of over 14,700 collection centers in low-rent suburban areas that also function as mini-distribution points and provide customers with a place to try on their purchases. It provides free delivery and free returns and has historically focused on products with higher profit margins, like clothes and shoes, which, as of May 2020, accounted for over 50% of sales.

A physical presence in towns and cities has, at least in the short term, helped Wildberries overcome the major hurdles facing other e-commerce companies in Russia: long delivery distances, scattered populations, a notoriously unreliable postal service, and a deep mistrust of upfront payment, a legacy of the turbulent transition from communism in the 1990s.

“The secret of successful online business in Russia is to be as little online as possible,” Dmitry Alekseev, co-owner of large electronics retailer DNS, told The Bell last May. “Wildberries has more offline outlets than we do.”

Wildberries’ success is also built in part on its 2014 decision to transition to an Amazon-style marketplace, in which suppliers are simply offered a platform to make sales. The company doesn’t have to sink its own money into products and is able to retain control of pricing, meaning it can pressure suppliers to offer big discounts. This policy has alienated some of the companies that work with Wildberries, which accuse the retail giant of forcing their hand. “If you only work with Wildberries, you can easily destroy the rest of the market for yourself,” said one supplier who requested anonymity.

Grabbing market share has long been the company’s overriding goal. “[They] were always compulsively drawn to growth. They sensed that if they were not developing rapidly, they would be caught, overtaken, and trampled into the ground,” recalled a former employee, who feared retaliation. Occasionally, growth was prioritized over profit. The decision to implement free deliveries, for example, initially hit the company’s bottom line.

As the company began to reach into households all over the country, and Bakalchuk attracted increasing interest from both the media and senior government officials, it was no longer possible to outright refuse interviews and dismiss the need for a PR department.

Around the start of 2018, Wildberries hired an external PR agency, which helped craft the tale of self-made female entrepreneurship, a narrative that Bakalchuk has since adopted as her origin story in interviews with top Russian media outlets. On the back of this carefully curated image of independence, however, the company has forged links in the heart of Moscow. One of Bakalchuk’s biggest cheerleaders is Trade and Industry Minister Denis Manturov, who has traveled with Bakalchuk on domestic business trips, announced major corporate decisions, and lobbied Wildberries’ interests abroad. And during the pandemic, Bakalchuk’s increasingly public reputation helped propel Wildberries to the top of Russia’s e-commerce sector.

Bakalchuk’s neatly packaged origin story downplays some key details. For starters, she is not the only decision-maker at Wildberries. Vladislav Bakalchuk, her husband — a soft-spoken man who reportedly owns 1% of Wildberries — was a successful businessman in the early 2000s and received a windfall when the internet provider he’d partly owned was sold in 2007. He and bodybuilder Sergei Anufriev occupy key positions in Wildberries.

Anufriev played an especially intriguing role in the early days of the company, brokering a large delivery of Adidas-branded goods for Wildberries in the late-2000s, after several other buyers declined, according to the former Wildberries employee. Back then, many Russian retailers were dependent on unwanted stock from major Western brands, a sizeable portion of which was shipped into the country using false customs declarations (the Russian Central Bank estimated in 2005 that these “gray imports” constituted as much as 20% of all imports).

While the extent of Anufriev’s influence today is unclear, the heavily discounted Adidas items were the backbone of Wildberries’ catalogue during a crucial growth period for the company. Several years later, reputable Russian media outlets repeatedly identified Anufriev as a co-owner of Wildberries. And the former Wildberries employee, who requested anonymity to speak freely, said that, when he worked at the company in 2010, “Tatyana was in charge of the everyday matters … [and] if she objected to Anufriev, he always answered ‘I’ve already said: we’re doing it like this.’ And everybody did that.”

Wildberries also stands out because of its close family ties. It’s unclear exactly how many relatives Tatyana and Vladislav Bakalchuk employ, but most appear to come from Tatyana’s side of the family, which is part of Russia’s Koryo-saram population of ethnic Koreans. In press interviews, Bakalchuk, who has four children, described how her father, aunt, and younger sister were all recruited to help. Her sister, Marina Andreeva, has been employed by the company since its early years and launched a short-lived line of Wildberries-branded goods, according to the former staff member. Another relative, Maksim Kim, and his wife, Nadezhda Kim, were also on Wildberries’ payroll, according to their social media profiles.

This tight-knit office culture and low staff turnover may contribute to skepticism about Wildberries’ “self-made” PR narrative, which has insulated it from deeper scrutiny. It has also helped shut down questions about possible undisclosed investments and the high level of state support that the company enjoys. There is less industry understanding of the company, compared to its major rivals, according to Alexander Ivanov, the president of Russia’s National Association of Distance Trading, and when a business is secretive and insulated, rumors are quick to take hold. “Good employees are constantly circulating between the other [e-commerce] companies … but from the very beginning, Wildberries had this idea to build their business like a family, and many top managers were nurtured from within,” said Ivanov. Several former employees said they felt uncomfortable speaking publicly about their experiences at Wildberries.

According to most market watchers, there are two possible paths ahead for Russian e-commerce. The market could either evolve to replicate a U.S.-style model, in which one company, such as Amazon, accounts for almost half of all online sales, or it could move toward a China-like situation, where three major firms — Alibaba, JD.com, and Pinduoduo — have a combined stranglehold on the market.

Other competitors jostling for control of the market include international retailer Global Fashion Group’s Lamoda and a series of online marketplaces: internet giant Yandex’s platform Yandex.Market; AliExpress Russia, which is owned by a four-way partnership of China’s Alibaba Group, a Russian state investment fund, mobile operator MegaFon, and internet firm Mail.ru; and Russia’s largest bank, state-owned SberBank, which is seeking a way to muscle in on the market, although a series of failed joint ventures has left it on the sidelines, compared to Yandex and AliExpress. Competition is stiff, considering Russia’s demography and geography; experts, including Data Insight’s Virin, believe that a sole dominant player is unlikely. “The structure of the market will be more like China than America,” he said.

Wildberries is exploring a number of ways to ensure it ends up as one of the top players. It is planning to expand across Europe and launched platforms last year in Slovakia, Poland, and Israel. It has also made significant efforts to diversify its catalogue, boosting its presence in electronics, household goods, books, and, with increasing assertiveness, groceries. On top of that, Wildberries now has plans to open a tourist service for holidaymakers in Russia.

Bakalchuk also appears to be banking on her significant connections with top Russian politicians. And government ministers, in addition to her cheerleader in the Trade and Industry Ministry, are lining up to be associated with the company’s extraordinary success: Economic Development Minister Maksim Reshetnikov appeared in conversation with Bakalchuk on national television last year. Bakalchuk even took part in a June meeting with President Vladimir Putin, during which she requested financial support for a national network of techno-parks.

Some of the networking may already be reaping dividends: in November, officials announced plans for a sector-wide subsidy scheme that benefits fully Russian-owned companies, like Wildberries, but not most of its major rivals. This will only fuel speculation that the company has received some form of high-level blessing to become a market leader at home and a flag bearer abroad.

In many ways, Wildberries’ very selective public relations, an aversion to outside investment, and fixation on growth make close cooperation with the authorities a logical choice. While Russia’s IT sphere is far freer of state control than any other part of the economy, all large companies — sooner or later — have to square with the Kremlin.
