WorldPainter is an interactive map generator for Minecraft. It allows you to «paint» landscapes using similar tools as a regular paint program. Sculpt and mould the terrain, paint materials, trees, snow and ice, etc. onto it, and much more.

WorldPainter is implemented in Java. If you do not have Java installed, install it first from the links below. It needs at least version 8, or 11 for running JavaScript scripts.

There is not much documentation yet, but the program should be pretty self-explanatory. To play the map, choose Export in the File menu. Just experiment and try everything out. Don’t forget to check the menus, and to see what happens if you right-click instead of left-clicking.

I’m having trouble installing WorldPainter. I get an error message while running WorldPainter, or WorldPainter won’t start. How do I fix it?

How do I play the world? How do I put the map I made in Minecraft?

How do I edit existing Minecraft maps?

WorldPainter is a map generator, not an editor! The basic idea is to use it for generating new maps which you then edit with other tools such as creative mode, ​ WorldEdit, ​ VoxelSniper or ​ MCEdit.

Important notes:

Is Multiplayer supported? How do I put the map on a Minecraft server?

Yes, Multiplayer is supported. Multiplayer maps are exactly the same as Singleplayer maps. Just Export the world like normal. Then, if you run the Minecraft server on the same computer, just move or copy the generated map directory to your Minecraft server installation directory, edit the level-name property in the server.properties file to be the same name as the directory, and (re)start the server. If the server is on a different computer the steps are the same, but you will have to transfer the map to the server somehow, generally by zipping it and transferring it to the server using a program such as Filezilla. Those details are beyond the scope of this site though. Ask your server administrator for the best way to transfer maps to the server, or google the subject.

How do I make the borders of the map look nice and integrate well with the Minecraft landscape?

When you leave the WorldPainter-generated chunks, Minecraft will start generating land again, according to the seed you specified and its own algorithms. There is nothing WorldPainter can do to avoid that. If you don’t take this into account, the edges or seams between your world and the Minecraft world may be very abrupt and ugly. There are several strategies for making the seams look good:

How do I change the water level on an existing world or map?

The first step is to change the default water level setting by opening the Dimension Properties (Ctrl+P or Edit menu), going to the Theme tab and adjusting the number at the bottom of the screen. You may have to temporarily enable «beaches around water level» to be able to change the setting.

To reset the water across the world in one go, open the Global Operations tool (Tools panel or Ctrl+G), select «reset all water or lava» and press Go. The advantage of this is that it’s quick and thorough, and it also resets the groundwater level in dry areas, so that the water level remains correct even if you change the elevation of currently dry areas. The downside is that it will remove all lava, and bodies of water that were above sea level, and will flood valleys that are below sea level.

To do it manually, use the Flood tool to raise the level of bodies of water by left-clicking on them, or lower them by right-clicking on them. Be careful not to interrupt the flooding operation, that may cause tiles with incorrect water levels to be left behind. You can also use the Sponge tool: right-clicking with it will reset the water level to the default in the area covered by the brush. Left-clicking the Sponge tool removes the water (or lava) altogether.

How do I control WorldPainter with the keyboard? What are the keyboard shortcuts?

How do I add custom blocks from mods to the map?

WorldPainter supports custom mod blocks with non-standard ID’s (even ID’s between 255 and 4096). Note: for block ID’s above 255 you have to enable «extended block IDs», either on the New World screen, or afterwards from the Edit menu.

We can’t help you with which block ID’s to use, you’ll have to find that out from the mod website or ask the authors or other users. Once you know the block ID to use there are four ways of adding custom blocks to the world:

Please note: many mods have dynamic block ID’s at runtime which are different than the block ID’s stored on disk. The clue is often that these ID’s are higher than 4095, which is not possible on disk. Make sure to find out from the mod’s authors or documentation what the static, on-disk block ID’s are and use those in WorldPainter.

How do I control WorldPainter with a tablet?

WorldPainter support pressure sensitivity (to control the layer intensity or tool speed), eraser and pen buttons of tablets. Make sure the device driver for the tablet is installed and check the Controls page for details.

Why do I get chunk errors / missing chunks / weird square patches with water or different landscape after exporting the world?

Probably for one of two reasons:

How do I get it to create villages, ravines or strongholds?

WorldPainter can’t generate any type of structure by itself. However it can direct Minecraft to generate structures in the generated map. You can do this by either selecting «allow Minecraft to populate the entire terrain» on the Export (or Dimension Properties) screen, to get them everywhere, or by painting in the Populate layer locally. Also make sure to leave the Structures option enabled on the Export screen.

Please note that WorldPainter has no control over where these structures will be generated! Minecraft will place them randomly according to the seed and its own algorithms. Also, using Populate will also cause Minecraft to generate trees, tall grass and flowers, underground resources, small water and lava lakes everywhere. If you used WorldPainter’s tree layers, or the Resource layer (which is on by default) you may get double the trees and/or resources.

If you don’t want this, you do have one option: you can set the world type to Superflat, and then use the Superflat preset to configure exactly what you want Minecraft to do during the population step. For more details about this technique, see ​ this YouTube video by Fornan II. For more details about the proper use of the Populate layer, see the Populate page.

How do I create arches, overhangs, floating islands or other types of overlapping land?

You can use Custom Cave/Tunnel layers to achieve such effects. By setting the roof and ceiling heights and other settings judicously, you can configure a «cave» which is actually entirely above the ground of the valley, and will carve out overhangs, arches or other structures from the surrounding cliffs. For one example, see ​ this YouTube video by Lord Dakr showing how to create arches.

Why does my virus scanner say there is a virus, trojan or other malware in WorldPainter?

It is a false positive. There is no virus, trojan or other malware in WorldPainter. If your virus scanner says that there is, please report it to the makers as a false positive, and then use your virus scanner’s «unquarantine» or equivalent functionality, or temporarily disable it, to be able to install and use WorldPainter. See the FalsePositives page for more information, including why you should upgrade to a better virus scanner.

How do I add custom objects to my map?

For placing complete objects you can use a Custom Objects Layer. You need a copy of the object you want to place in bo2, bo3, schematic or nbt format. One way to do get these is to export the object from Minecraft using WorldEdit or MCEdit. You can also find collections of them online. Then create a Custom Objects Layer (from the + button on the Layers panel) and load the file (or multiple files).

How do I change what Minecraft does when I use Populate? How do I get rid of all the small water and lava lakes?

The small water and lava lakes aren’t created by WorldPainter, they are created by Minecraft when you use the Populate layer, or enable the «allow Minecraft to populate the entire terrain» option. WorldPainter has no control over what Minecraft does when it populates a chunk, at least not for the Default and Large Biomes world types. All it can do is tell it to populate the chunk, or not, for each individual chunk. If Minecraft populates a chunk it will add underground resources, vegetation, trees, small water and lava lakes, snow and ice, villages, ravines, strongholds and abandoned mines. It will not generate caves. For more details about the proper use of the Populate layer, see the Populate page.

If you don’t want the small water and lava lakes, you do have one option: you can set the world type to Superflat, and then use the Superflat preset to configure exactly what you want Minecraft to do during the population step. For more details about this technique, see ​ this YouTube video by Fornan II.

You should also consider whether you need Populate, as WorldPainter has its own layers for almost everything. The only thing that WorldPainter can’t generate itself is structures (mines, villages, etc.). By default the Resources layer is «on everywhere», so WorldPainter already generates underground resources. You can use the other layers to add things like Deciduous or Pine forests, snow and ice, underground Caverns and Chasms, etc.

How do I add custom brushes?

A custom brush is a grey scale bitmap image file. You can create it yourself using a paint program such as ​ GIMP or ​ Paint.NET or download it off the Internet. Height maps of mountains, for instance, make good custom brush images. To install the custom brush, copy the image file to the custom brushes folder, which you can open from the Tools menu in WorldPainter. You have to restart WorldPainter for the custom brush to show up. For more details, see the CustomBrushes page.

Note: you can organise the custom brushes into separate subdirectories inside the brushes folder, which will show up as separate palettes in WorldPainter. This is especially convenient if you have many custom brushes, to prevent the palette from becoming so large that it doesn’t fit on the screen.

How do I customise the biomes without creating any land, letting Minecraft generate the land according to the biomes?

Unfortunately due to the way Minecraft works this is not possible.

How do I use the Populate layer?

There is a lot of confusion about the correct usage of the Populate layer. This page tries to explain exactly what it does and how to use it.

How do I give WorldPainter more memory?

Tools

WorldPainter provides various tools for editing the dimension currently loaded in the editor. They are located in the toolbox, the panel by default located in the top left corner of the window.

In general the tools are used as follows:

Continuously applies the current paint while holding down the mouse button.

[[Image(. )]] Pencil

Draws dots and continuous lines of the current paint, either freehand or straight and optionally constrained to 45 degree angles.

[[Image(. )]] Fill

Flood fills an area with the current paint.

For terrain types, biomes and annotation colours the contiguous area of the terrain type, biome or annotation colour respectively that you click on is filled. For layers, the contiguous empty area (where the layer is not present) you click on is filled, bounded by pre-existing presence of the layer. In other words, paint the edges of the area first using the other tools, then fill the empty area. For continuous layers (such as the tree layers and Custom Object Layers) the area is filled to the intensity you have currently selected, and is bounded by areas where the layer exists at the same or higher intensity. Right clicks «remove» the paint. See Spray Paint for what that means for the different paint types.

Paints one or more lines of text with the current paint.

Click where you want the text to be placed and a popup will appear allowing you to enter the text and specify the desired font, decoration (bold or italic), size and angle (in 90 degree steps). The text may have more than one line. The top left corner of the text is placed where you click. If you selected a non-zero angle the text is rotated around its top left corner. Right clicks «remove» the paint. See Spray Paint for what that means for the different paint types.

Floods an area with water, or raises an existing body of water.

Click on a dry place to fill an area where the terrain is the same height or lower with water. Or click on an existing body of water to raise the level of water by one block. This may flood additional areas. If the water spills over somewhere it may even fill large areas. Right click on an existing body of water to lower the level of water by one, drying up the areas where it was only one block deep. Keep right-clicking to dry up a body of water completely. If you click on a body of lava it will be turned into water without changing the level. Note: if you change the shape of the terrain at the shores of a body of water the water is not automatically adjusted! To prevent malformed cliffs of water around the edges, re-flood the area by right-clicking once on the body of water and then left-clicking to flood it to the original level up to the new shorelines. Note: if you lower dry terrain which had previously been flooded the «ground water» may reappear and flood the area in strange shapes. If that happens use the Sponge tool to either mop it up or reset the water level to the default.

Removes or resets water and lava.

Left click to remove any water and lava. Right click to reset the fluid type and level to the default. By default this is water at level 62, but the both can be changed on the New World screen, and the level additionally on the Default Terrain tab of the Dimension Properties?.

Raises or lowers the terrain in the shape of the brush.

Left clicking raises the terrain; right-clicking lowers it. Hold the mouse button down in the same place or while moving it to keep raising or lowering the terrain. The brush intensity slider determines how fast the terrain is raised or lowered. Lowering the terrain below the ground water level will flood it; raising the terrain above it will dry it out.

Flattens the terrain in the shape of the brush.

The terrain is raised or lowered towards the level of the terrain where you click. Hold the mouse button down in the same place or while moving it to keep flattening the terrain. While the mouse button is held down the terrain is flattened to the level of the terrain where it was first clicked.

Tip: this makes it a good tool to quickly raise or lower large areas to the same level: First use the Height tool to lower or raise the terrain to the desired level, or pick a location where it is already at the desired level Then click the Flatten tool at the point where the terrain is at the desired level, hold the mouse button down, and drag it everywhere you wish the level to be the same To equalise large areas more quickly choose a large brush and/or a high intensity. To keep some variation use a lower intensity or drag at a high speed

The brush intensity slider determines how fast the terrain is flattened. There is no difference between left and right clicking.

Smooths the terrain in the shape of the brush.

The terrain is averaged resulting in blunting of sharp edges, smoother transitions and reduced height differences. Hold the mouse button down to keep smoothing the terrain. The brush intensity slider determines how intensely the terrain is smoothed. There is no difference between left and right clicking.

Raises a mountain from the terrain in the shape of the brush.

The difference between this and Height is that it is absolute instead of relative. I.e. the shape it creates is independent of the current shape of the terrain. The mountain is shaped like the current brush; its base is at the bedrock (level 0) and its peak is slightly higher than the level of the terrain where you clicked. How much higher depends on the brush intensity slider; at 50% the peak of the mountain will be one block higher each iteration. The terrain will be raised only where it is currently lower than the mountain. The mountain will continue to be raised while you hold the mouse button down. Wherever the terrain is raised its type will also be changed according to the Default Terrain tab of the Dimension Properties?. Right-clicking will cause craters to appear instead of mountains by turning the mountain shape upside down with its base at the map’s maximum height and its peak slightly lower than where you clicked and lowering the terrain instead of raising it. Tip: this tool lends itself to creating mountain ranges like this:

Select the Raise Mountain tool and a suitable brush, for instance the Linear Circle. Click and hold the left mouse button somewhere to grow a mountain. Wait until the height is as desired and then start dragging the mouse away while still holding the button to create a mountain ridge. The slope of the ridge will be determined by how fast you drag. Experiment with different drag speeds and with varying the drag speed to make the ridge go up and down. Terminate the ridge by dragging at a high speed so it slopes down and disappears into the terrain; release the mouse button. Draw additional ridges by clicking at the spine of an existing ridge and dragging the mouse away at an angle. Repeat as many times as you want to create an intricate network of mountain ridges. Draw a starburst pattern to create one single mountain shape, or lightning patterns or elaborate networks to create entire mountain ranges.

Changes the spawn point.

Only active on the surface dimension. The spawn point is displayed as a small red cross. The default spawn point is at coordinates 0,0. Click where you want the player to spawn upon first entering the map. Note that Minecraft only takes this as a suggestion. You may actually spawn some significant distance away. This also applies to the altitude. WorldPainter? sets the spawn point on the surface, but if the world has a ceiling Minecraft may decide to spawn you on top of it regardless of the coordinates set by WorldPainter?.

It should be pretty self-explanatory, and the rest you should be easily able to find out by clicking around. Don’t forget to try all your mouse buttons, and try holding them down! Post in this thread to get support from me or other users of WorldPainter.

The Load and Save functions save the map in WorldPainter format. The Export function exports the map to a Minecraft world. By default it is exported right to your Minecraft saves directory. You can then open the world in Minecraft under Singleplayer.

The Import and Merge functions allow you to import the landscape from an existing map, and then merge any changes you make to the landscape back to the existing map. It is not meant for general purpose map editing! WorldPainter is, and always will be, a map generator, not a map editor. Note that this functionality is dangerous! Use it at your own risk. Please see this post for important information about how these functions work, and their limitations.

This tool is not meant to create ready to run single player maps, it’s meant to create server levels and adventure maps. The idea is to create the basic landscape, with your mountain ranges, oceans, forests, snow and ice, lakes, hills, etc. using the tool, and then go in and fill in the details with other tools.

Заселение

Как оно работает? Генерация мира в Minecraft состоит из двух этапов: генерация самого ландшафта (создание чанков, генерация в них камня/земли/травы, выдалбливание пещер) и, собственно, само заселение. Если не отмечать данную опцию, то экспортированный мир будет помечен как «уже заселённый» и Minecraft с ним ничего больше не сделает (не будет принудительно проделывать второй этап генерации).

Для чего же это нужно? Например, если вы хотите, чтобы руды генерировались естественным образом, т.е. залежами по несколько блоков, как это сделано в игре изначально. Ведь можно воспользоваться генерацией руд встроенной в WorldPainter, а надо же как-то и стандартный способ выбрать тоже, ведь верно я говорю? Вот так вот.

И, наконец, палю тему! Только я до этого догадался! Слава мне! Запатентованный метод! Так. Я сидел на многих форумах и видел множество вопросов о том, как добавить поддержку руд из модов, и даже сам задавал этот вопрос, но никто мне не мог помочь. В этом мне помогло заселение! Я чисто случайно в поисках пещер по карте вдруг заметил, что внезапно появились руды из модов в генерации, и понял, что только этот способ поможет мне в решении проблемы. Но не тут то было! Оказалось, что «засельщик» создаёт на поверхности великое множество прудов, которые выглядят ну ооочень уродливо, знали бы вы. Так вот, я их убрал при помощи Bukkit плагина TerrainControl (у него также имеется и Forge версия, как на клиент, так и на сервер). Можете писать что угодно, что это знает любой дурак и т.д. и т.п. Но по факту. Я не увидел никого, кто до этого б смог додуматься. Те люди просто не знали всех возможностей, которые им могло дать заселение. А я старался, искал, вникал в самые недры этой проблемы, и через большой срок смог таки найти способ. Зато нашёл. И зато первый!

Hello, bigrat here. Today I am going to be sharing some of my knowledge concerning WorldMachine and WorldPainer, the two programs I use to create terrain.

This one will be focused on turning that heightmap into a minecraft map, and painting the surface terrain, and exporting it into a playable minecraft map.

WorldPainter may be a bit more well-known to minecrafters than worldmachine, since it was built specifically for creating minecraft maps.

It allows for easy manipulation of the height and surface terrain of your maps, as well as offering tools for object cover, and cave/tunnel layers.

When you first open up world painter, your screen will look like this:

Take a look at some of the boxes on the sides. Tools, Layers, Terrain, Brushes, and Brush settings.

Layers: When equipped, these paint things like chasms, trees, biomes, snow, and other objects.

Tools: Tools are used for manipulating water, and land height such as raising land, smoothing land, and filling areas with water or lava.

Terrain: This is the surface blocktype. This is used for covering areas in snowblocks, stone, clay, dirt, you name it.

Brushes: Brushes control the shape of whatever you paint.

Brush Settings: This is where you can adjust the brush rotation, opacity, and maks. I will go into some of these height and slope masks later.

Experiment around with these on the default world!

Importing a WorldMachine Heightmap

Here you can adjust the water height, and some other settings like terrain layers. If you want, you can delete all the terrain layers since we will be going over everything anyway. I am going to set my water height to 0 for this tutorial so I am sure I won’t get any water.

After looking at this, I sometimes go back into WorldMachine and make a few changes, but this looks ok for now.

You can see that there is some frost layer on the top of the mountains, and I don’t really want that. You can remove layers by selecting that layer and then selecting a brush and then right clicking over the terrain.

Painting Terrain / Masks

In this section I will be going over painting our terrain and some of the masks I use.

First, I am going to cover with a snow terrain brush since I am going for something cold and high altitude.

Now this really doesn’t look very interesting, so this is where some of the masks come in.

If you look at any mountains, they aren’t completely covered in snow.

The steep sections are often bare, while the flatter areas are covered. We can do this in world painter by using above/below degree mask.

I am going to take a stone brush and coat everywhere over that has a slope higher than 55 degrees with stone.

This looks a lot better.

Custom Object Layers / Trees

What this map needs now are some trees. Before you go through these steps, find some trees that you like and want to be added. I often use lentebrijuso’s tree repositories. However, if you are planning on using the map for a hypixel submission, you may not use someone else’s tree repository. You must make your own trees.
For my PMC projects I often use this

In these downloads they contain a grid world with the filenames next to each tree. Fly around and write down the ID’s that you want to use. Then go in world painter to the layers box.
Click the + button and select Add a Custom Object Layer t

To select which trees you want, click the button on the side that looks like a lego with a green +. Find the directory for the tree pack and open up the BO2 or schematic folder. I would recommend using the BO2 files since you don’t need to modify the height offset. In schematics, you may get the tree being put on the top of the ground rather than down a bit, exposing the roots, if it applies.

It is important to add the air bo2/schematic in as well. This will help control the tree density. If you double click air you can also change the percentage. If you find your trees being way to dense in your world, you can increase it up to 200 or 300%.

Press Ok and select the layer! You can paint this around like any other layer though I would again suggest a very low strength and not a solid brush.

I also use the degree and height masks for this to avoid getting trees way on the summit and not on the cliff faces.

Exporting Your Map

Now, we get to turn our world painter map into a minecraft map!

And you will get a new window. One thing I would suggest here is only to export the map and not the gray border that world painter added in. You can do that by clicking Export Selected Tiles above the export button.

Press export and you are done! Open up your world and see how it looks! Many times I have to go back into world painter and make some edits such as editing how many trees there are. Sometimes I even go back into world machine and make some changes there and restart in worldpainter.

Заселение

Как оно работает? Генерация мира в Minecraft состоит из двух этапов: генерация самого ландшафта (создание чанков, генерация в них камня/земли/травы, выдалбливание пещер) и, собственно, само заселение. Если не отмечать данную опцию, то экспортированный мир будет помечен как «уже заселённый» и Minecraft с ним ничего больше не сделает (не будет принудительно проделывать второй этап генерации).

Для чего же это нужно? Например, если вы хотите, чтобы руды генерировались естественным образом, т.е. залежами по несколько блоков, как это сделано в игре изначально. Ведь можно воспользоваться генерацией руд встроенной в WorldPainter, а надо же как-то и стандартный способ выбрать тоже, ведь верно я говорю? Вот так вот.

И, наконец, палю тему! Только я до этого догадался! Слава мне! Запатентованный метод! Так. Я сидел на многих форумах и видел множество вопросов о том, как добавить поддержку руд из модов, и даже сам задавал этот вопрос, но никто мне не мог помочь. В этом мне помогло заселение! Я чисто случайно в поисках пещер по карте вдруг заметил, что внезапно появились руды из модов в генерации, и понял, что только этот способ поможет мне в решении проблемы. Но не тут то было! Оказалось, что «засельщик» создаёт на поверхности великое множество прудов, которые выглядят ну ооочень уродливо, знали бы вы. Так вот, я их убрал при помощи Bukkit плагина TerrainControl (у него также имеется и Forge версия, как на клиент, так и на сервер). Можете писать что угодно, что это знает любой дурак и т.д. и т.п. Но по факту. Я не увидел никого, кто до этого б смог додуматься. Те люди просто не знали всех возможностей, которые им могло дать заселение. А я старался, искал, вникал в самые недры этой проблемы, и через большой срок смог таки найти способ. Зато нашёл. И зато первый!

Одних не устраивает определенный биом, другим не нравится тип сгенерированного мира, большое количество воды или присутствие снега прям в начале карты. Даже порою seed не всегда помогает. Что же делать в таком случае? Ведь вы можете создать собственную карту при помощи специальных утилит. Зачем тратить столько времени не ерунду, когда можно программой minecraft worldpainter создать именно то, что вам нужно? Это могут быть высокие горы, красивые озера, большие вулканы и многое другое.

Работали когда-нибудь в стандартной утилите Paint, которая по умолчанию стоит в операционной системе Windows? Наверное, практически каждый пользователь хоть раз, но использовал эту программку, даже для того, чтобы просто побаловаться. Так вот, программа, про которую мы вам рассказываем сегодня, в принципе чем-то похожа на Paint, только отличается функционал и система взаимодействия с инструментарием. Сразу скажу вам, что утилита полностью на английском языке. Но не стоит отчаиваться. Здесь все инструменты и так будут понятны пользователю, особенно тому, который уже не раз играл в Minecraft.

Если говорить в общем, то программа worldpainter 1.7.1 имеет очень большой функционал. Вы без особых усилий сможете создавать на карте многочисленные пирамиды, вставлять, где нужно озера или проводить реки, заливать территорию лавой. Причем это будет не простое копирование блоков. Программа работает таким образом, что все используемые объекты идеально вписываются в общий вид карты. Здесь применяется и сглаживание, и другие подобные инструменты, причем все это используется автоматически системой. Если вам нужно поставить горы, просто инструментом вытягиваете поверхность на определенную высоту.

Хотите построить высокую башню? Хорошо, инструменты в этом программном пакете позволяют реализовать подобное за несколько секунд. В любое время можно отметить последние действия или несколько действий. Также вы можете просмотреть полученный результат в 3D режиме, установить точку спавна игроков. Можно использовать практически все виды блоков, делать плоские поверхности, сглаживать с возвышенностями, вставлять любые типы биомов и многое другое. Сохранять результат можно в формате карты, которая используется уже в самой игре Minecraft.

If you are going to learn only one thing about Worldpainter, let it be custom object layers. Even the most mundane terrain looks custom with a nice range of custom objects. Getting started

Custom object layers can be found by clicking on the [+] ( 1 ) button in the layers tab. In the drop down menu that unfolds click on [Add a custom object layer. ] ( 2 )

Adjust the relative frequency by adjusting the percentage in field ( 1 )

Note: how often an object spawns is a simple calculation. Spawn frequency = relative frequency of the object divided by the sum of the relative frequency of all objects in the layer.

By adjusting the value at ( 1 ) you change the density. I suggest you base the tree sparseness on the most dense you want your forest to be. Pay attention to «one per X blocks at 100%» or use the visualer at the right hand side of the window.

Notes: objects that are set for «on water» and/or «on lava» can not penetrate the soil beneath. You can use the offset settings to make objects sink only in the water.
You can edit this setting for multiple objects at once by selecting multiple objects in the layer menu.

Discussion

Schematic is the most common file format to share parts of maps. Most powertools support this file format, e.g.: worldpainter, world edit, voxelsniper, mcedit. It’s easy to use and highly accessible. For the purpose of Worldpainter it’s exactly the same as the less common bo2 files except for a few things.

Difference 1: BO2 objects can have negative block offsets. This means that a BO2 object can include underground blocks without putting in the offset manually. The use of BO2 for Worldpainter was popularized by tree repository creators who included roots in their trees and make their use as easy as possible. It makes things easier, but doesn’t provide anything unique.
Difference 2: BO2’s can include air blocks. E.g. you could make an object for a submarine that doesn’t fill with water if placed. Wheras it would fill with water if placed as schematic file.
Difference 3: BO2’s aren’t commonly supported by tools. The tools to create BO2’s are poorly supported and can require knowledge of command prompt and scripts.

Most objects will be centered on a lowest point. By pressing on [Auto] ( 1 ) Worldpainter will adjust the object centering based on the lowest block. Adjust it manually afterwards to make sure it’s center by clicking on the offset coordinates ( 2 )

Coral reefs in Minecraft are notorious. The water visibility is very poor, and the rendering of water on edges of non opaque blocks is too. Further more water blocks light and destroys plants. There are various methods of making coral reefs, and this is not the authors’ favourite method but the only one using object layers.

Scripting API

The way the script will interact with WorldPainter is through a context object named wp which exports a number of operations in the form of functions or methods (depending on your scripting language). The operations follow the «builder pattern» or «method chaining», meaning that you chain one or more method invocations to set the parameters and then invoke «go()» to actually perform the operation, which may or may not return a value. For example, in JavaScript:

This single statement loads a WorldPainter world from the specified file and stores it in a variable named «world», which you can then use in further operations to refer to the loaded world.

The script will have access to any commandline arguments specified by the user when invoking the script via the arguments or argv array (both are available; the first command line argument is in arguments[0] or argv[1] ; argv[0] contains the name of the script; in the arguments array that is not available).

Note that WorldPainter supports 16-bit height maps! You can import them to create worlds with high resolution height information, which will make smooth snow look better and editing work more smoothly. You’ll need to tell WorldPainter to map the full range of the height map (or any other desired range) to the full range of the world height though, by setting fromLevels() and toLevels() like this:

Applying a Height Map as a Layer

To apply a height map to a world as a layer:

About the mapping:

You may map EITHER grey scale values (using fromLevel() and fromLevels()) OR colour values (using fromColour()), but you may not mix both. Mapping colour values obviously is only useful if the height map was derived from a colour image. Note that the colours are only matched exactly as specified. Slightly different colours don’t match. Therefore you must make sure that your input image contains only solid areas of discrete colours and has no anti-aliasing, smoothing, mixing of colours, gradients, etc.

You must specify a mapping by using the fromLevel(s)/fromColour(s)/toLevel(s) setters at least once. The value mapping specifies which layer intensities should be set for which input values. Any input values not mapped will be ignored, i.e. the existing layer intensity, if any, will remain unaltered in those locations. To correctly set the mapping you must know which target values to use for the type of layer you are mapping to. As of now there are three layer types:

On/Off Layers

So-called on/off or true/false or 1-bit layers don’t have an intensity. Instead they are either on or off for each coordinate. Examples of this type of layer are: the Frost layer, the Void layer, Custom Ground Cover layers and Custom Cave/Tunnel layers.

For these layers a target value of zero means «off» and any other value means «on». In other words, if you use the default mapping, any areas where the height map is not completely black will result in the layer being applied.

Continuous Layers

So-called continuous or 4-bit layers have an intensity. In the GUI the intensity is displayed as a percentage between 0% and 100%, but technically these layers only have 16 discrete intensities, from 0 to 15. Zero means the layer is absent; 1 corresponds to 1%, 8 to 50% and 15 to 100%. Examples of this type of layer are: the Caverns and Chasms layers, the standard tree layers, the Resources layer, Custom Object layers, Custom Underground Pockets layers and Combined layers.

For these layers the target value must therefore lie between 0 and 15 (inclusive). If you use the default mapping, any areas where the height map is completely black will not have the layer set; where the height map value is between 1 and 14 (inclusive) will have the layer set to a percentage from 1% to 93% and where the value is 15 (which is still very dark) or higher the layer will be set to 100%.

Direct Mapping Layers

These are layers which don’t have an intensity, but where the layer values correspond directly to arbitrary concepts such as colours or biomes. Examples of this type of layer are the Biomes layer and the Annotations layer.

It depends on the type of height map what kind of mapping makes sense for these layers. If it is a genuine height map (i.e. it corresponds to surface heights) then you can use it to map different height ranges to different biomes, for instance, and it makes sense to use the ranged setters (fromLevels().toLevel() and fromLevels().toLevels()) to set up the mapping.

If instead the «height map» is a value map or mask which directly indicates which biomes, for instance, must be used then using the ranged setters does not make sense and it would be better to use the one on one setter (fromLevel().toLevel()) repeatedly to set up each mapping of a «height map» value to a biome, or a colour.

For the Biomes layer, the target values are the Minecraft biome IDs which you can find on the ​ Minecraft wiki. To reset the biome to «automatic», set the layer value to 255.

For the Annotations layer, the target values must be between 0 and 15. 0 indicates that the layer should not be present; the other values indicate individual colours. See this page for an overview of the colour mapping.

Applying a Height Map to the Terrain Type

To apply a height map to a world as the terrain type:

Running Scripts

Inside WorldPainter

Scripts executed from inside WorldPainter have access to the currently loaded world and currently selected dimension, so that they can manipulate them.

The Command Line

WorldPainter scripts can be run from your operating system’s command line, using the wpscript command. The «command line» is a way to interact with the operating system of your computer by typing textual commands with your keyboard and receiving the results as text on the screen, using a terminal window. On Windows the quickest way to open a terminal window is to press the Windows key, type cmd and press Enter.

Regardless of the operating system you run scripts with the wpscript command, which should automatically be available on the command line after installing WorldPainter:

Where is the filename of the script, including extension, which can optionally be followed by one or more script arguments. The arguments will be available to the script in the arguments array (starting from index 0) or the argv array (starting from index 1).

Script files

You can create them with any text editor, such as Notepad on Windows, or a dedicated IDE or programmers’ editor which might provide JavaScript syntax highlighting and code completion.

The Populate Layer

This page describes what the Populate layer does and how to use it correctly.

Minecraft 1.12 and older only

Unfortunately Minecraft 1.14 and later do not contain a mechanism for WorldPainter to tell it to populate chunks, so all of this only applies to Minecraft 1.12 or older. For Minecraft 1.14 or later the chunks are always unpopulated by Minecraft.

Don’t plaster the map with it!

First of all, do not plaster the entire map with it! If that’s what you want to do, use the «allow Minecraft to populate the entire terrain» option on the Export screen.

What it does

Biomes (in Minecraft) are different combinations of temperature, precipitation, vegetation type, etc.. They are stored per horizontal (x, z) coordinate (in other words, per column of blocks) and they influence the colour of grass and leaves, whether it rains, snows or is dry, whether water freezes and which mobs will spawn.

When Minecraft generates land, it does so in two steps:

In step one, it calculates the biomes according to its own world generating algorithm and then generates the actual land mass, surface terrain (grass, sand, etc.), river or ocean water and caves, according to the biome. Since WorldPainter pre-generates the chunks, Minecraft never performs this step for those chunks.

In step two, the «populate» step, Minecraft adds underground resources (ores, lava and water lakes), creates the vegetation (trees, tall grass, mushrooms, flowers, lily pads, etc.), small lava and water lakes on the surface and structures (abandoned mines, NPC villages, strongholds, dungeons and desert and jungle temples). It does this according to the biome settings stored in the chunk. This second step can be performed by Minecraft on chunks generated by WorldPainter, because there is a flag for each chunk in the map data telling Minecraft whether that chunk has been populated yet.

This second step is what the Populate layer controls. If you paint the Populate layer on a chunk, or check «allow Minecraft to populate the entire terrain», WorldPainter will turn off the flag saying the chunk is already populated for that chunk (or all chunks), which will cause Minecraft to populate it the first time it loads the chunk. If you don’t use Populate, the chunk will be left as it is (which may include trees, etc. generated by WorldPainter using the other layers) when it is loaded by Minecraft.

Exactly what Minecraft will do depends on the biomes you painted (or WorldPainter chose automatically) for that chunk. Note that all WorldPainter can do is tell Minecraft to populate the chunk, or not populate the chunk. It has no control over what Minecraft will do exactly. For instance, there is no way to tell it not to generated surface lakes of water or lava. If you don’t want those, your only option is not to use Populate.

Note that whether or not you use Populate, the biomes will still determine the colour of grass and leaves, whether it will rain or snow or be dry, whether water will freeze and what kinds of mobs will spawn.

Mixing Populate with other layers

If you mix Populate with the other layers and features of WorldPainter (some of which are enabled by default) you might get unexpected or unintended results. It’s important to know what it does and what the consequences are.

For instance, WorldPainter by default already generates underground ores, water and lava (as controlled by the Resources layer, which is turned on everywhere by default on the Dimension Properties or Export screen). If you leave that turned on, and then also use Populate, you will get double the resources. This may or may not be what you want, but you should be aware of it.

Another example is forests. If you use one of WorldPainter’s tree layers (Deciduous, Pine, Swamp or Jungle), WorldPainter will generate trees in those areas (with a size and density determined by the intensity with which you painted the layer). By default (if «automatic biomes» is enabled), it will also set the biome in those areas to «forest» (or «taiga» if you also use the Frost layer in the same area). That means that if you use Populate in the same location, or enable «allow Minecraft to populate the entire terrain», Minecraft will also generate trees there and you will get double the amount of trees! Again this may or may not be what you want, but you should be aware of it.

WorldPainter’s functionality can be extended with plugins which can add new layer types or tools, or add support for other map formats than Minecraft.

This plugins adds a new layer which places trees in autumn/fall colours. This is more of a toy/demo and is here for historical interest, but it does work.

CubicChunks

CubicChunks is a Minecraft 1.12 mod that allows for massively higher maps than the standard 256 blocks of vanilla Minecraft. This plugin adds support for exporting and importing WorldPainter worlds in the CubicChunks format.

World Painter Custom Brushes

Here are some simple custom brushes for World Painter that I have created.

They are not much use to most people, but if you are wanting to add layers for some underground caverns and dungeons then these may help (using the add » custom cave/tunnels layer » tool).

I also just added some real world places which were taken from satellite STL height maps and converted to PNG files, which can be used in the normal way to raise or lower terrain, etc.

Or you can use some (high quality) brushes to create a new world using » import new world » and select » from height map «. Just remember to choose an adequate size by increasing the scale by a few hundred percent. You may not want to do this to scale as that is thousands of meters (1 minecraft block =1metre).

Notes:
You can access and add to the brushes folder by going to:
C:\Users\( user name )\AppData\Roaming\WorldPainter\

There is also a brush folder button in World Painter under tools.

These brushes have been designed to work very well with WorldPainter, and they do. They are almost at the maximum resolution that WorldPainter allows. This means you are getting extremely high detail while using these!

When I put this pack together I had one major goal in mind. I wanted to make a pack that everyone could use, free of charge. This pack is licenced under the Creative Commons licence, which makes it open source. However, I do ask that you do not redistribute this pack in any way. Uploading a brush imgage, and passing it off as your own work is stealing. You may of course use these for WorldPainter maps. The Caves/Tunnels Layer

This page describes the various settings of the Caves/Tunnels custom layer type, and how to use them.

Floor and Ceiling Heights

The heights of the floors and ceilings of the cave are configured separately. This way, you can mix and match them to create variously shaped caves or tunnels. The basic shape of both floor and ceiling are governed by two options; mode and level:

A cave will only result in those locations where the ceiling level is higher than the floor level.

Random Variation

The settings described above will result in completely flat floors and ceilings, and/or floors and ceilings that exactly follow or reflect the terrain. If you want more variation you can use the smoothness settings for both floor and ceiling to add some random noise:

Walls

The settings described so far will result in perfectly flat walls that meet the floors and ceilings at 90 degree angles (or whatever angle the floor or ceiling is at). If you want smoother transitions of floors to walls and walls to ceilings you can do so with the bottom width and top width settings. These determine how far, in blocks, the wall will come ‘into’ the cave at the bottom and top of the wall, respectively. From there, the wall will make a quarter circular turn upwards or downwards, so the height of the section that comes into the cave will be the same as the width (unless the cave is not high enough for that of course).

If you want a square cave or tunnel, set these to 0. If you want a perfectly circular cave or tunnel, set them to half the cave height (the difference between the floor and ceiling levels), and make sure to paint the layer at the correct width by setting the brush radius to the same value.

Water and Lava

There are two water and lava related options you can set:

The Preview

The Caves/Tunnels custom layer settings screen includes a preview which shows the effect of the settings discussed above, making it easier to configure the layer to your liking. Note that the landscape shown is not the actual landscape from your map! It’s a fixed landscape intended to include a range of terrain heights in order to be able to judge the effects of any height settings.

The preview cave/tunnel ends a short distance from the right edge, so you can see the effects of the bottom extent and top extent wall depth settings.

Layer Colouring

Depending on the settings you chose, the layer may not actually produce caves everywhere you paint it. If the floor height is higher than the terrain height where you paint the layer, for instance, a cave will obviously not be produced. Also, the combination of floor and ceiling modes and levels might result in there not being any cave at all where the terrain is too low (for instance when the ceiling is set to fixed depth and the floor to fixed level or opposite of terrain).

Similarly, a cave might not be entirely underground. If the floor is below ground level, but the ceiling is above it, the cave will break the surface and be open to the outside air.

To be able to better judge this, the cave layer will be painted in different intensities:

Materials

By default, the cave or tunnel will just be excavated out of the blocks that are already there, so the floors, walls and ceilings will be made of whatever the underground material happens to be in that location.

If you want the floors, walls and ceilings to be made of a particular kind of material you can do so by setting the material option in the corresponding section(s). You have the same mixed material options as when configuring a custom terrain type. You can leave it at just one block type, or you can configure a mix of different block types.

The floor and ceiling materials are only used for the «actual» floors and ceilings, in other words only those parts which aren’t the wall extending into the cave, or have random variation applies to them. The walls material setting includes the parts of the wall that extend into the cave, as well as any random variation of cloors and ceilings, so in rougher, more natural looking caves the walls material will actually probably be by far the most prevalent.

You don’t have to set a material for every section. You can have a floor made of Bricks or Stone Bricks or something like that, for instance, while leaving the walls and ceilings natural.

WorldPainter won’t start or isn’t usable any more after a change

If you made a change (such as installing custom brushes or a plugin, or changing a preference) and now WorldPainter won’t start any more, or isn’t usable any more, try using WorldPainter Safe Mode. It will allow WorldPainter to start again, allowing you to undo the change you made, or confirm that the change was what caused the problem so you know to undo it.

WorldPainter hangs during Export while using a lot of CPU and/or harddisk resources

If the Export appears to hang and WorldPainter is using a lot of CPU and/or the harddisk is continually being used then it may be that WorldPainter is trying to use too much memory, a condition called thrashing. See the Thrashing page for instructions for fixing it.

WorldPainter lags badly when I use an overlay image

This is a known problem in WorldPainter which some people experience, for as yet unknown reasons having to do with the image size and type. Try experimenting with different Overlay Scaling and Painting settings on the Performance tab of the Preferences screen.

The brush is displayed off centre and it leaves a trail of garbage

This is a known problem in JIDE, the external library which we use for the docks. While we hunt for a permanent solution you can fix the problem whenever it occurs by resizing the WorldPainter window, or resizing the dock on the left of the WorldPainter window (by dragging the right edge of it).

My virus scanner says there is a virus, trojan or other malware in WorldPainter

It is a false positive. There is no virus, trojan or other malware in WorldPainter. If your virus scanner says that there is, please report it to the makers as a false positive, and then use your virus scanner’s «unquarantine» or equivalent functionality, or temporarily disable it, to be able to install and use WorldPainter. See the FalsePositives page for more information, including why you should upgrade to a better virus scanner.

When I import a height map, or add a custom brush, the height mapping is not linear

If you import a height map, or add a custom brush, with a linear gradient in it, but in WorldPainter the gradient becomes curved instead, this may be caused by the image file having an alpha channel. The image should be 8-bit or 16-bit grey scale with no alpha channel for optimum results. Try removing the alpha channel with an image editor such as ​ GIMP or ​ paint.net.

The water is uneven or there are square patches of water on the world

There are various ways this could have happened, for instance:

Regardless of how it happened, there are a few ways in which you can fix it:

I get chunk errors / missing chunks / weird square patches with water or different landscape after exporting the world

This is probably for one of two reasons:

WorldPainter runs out of memory

There is water underneath all of my land

If there is ocean underneath your land after Exporting your world and opening it in Minecraft, you probably exported it in the wrong format with Populate enabled. If you Export the world in 1.12 format, and you used the Populate layer or you enabled «allow Minecraft to populate the entire terrain», and then you open the map in Minecraft 1.13 or later, then Minecraft will regenerate (part of) all the chunks marked as «to populate».

To prevent this, Export the world in Minecraft 1.15+ format. Unfortunately Minecraft 1.13 and later don’t support populating chunks, so you will have to use WorldPainter layers to generate all the structures you need, including vegetation, trees, lakes, buildings, etc..

Although making maps in Minecraft is a lot of fun, at times it does take a lot of work, if you’re up to something grandiose. Fortunately, the Minecraft community has some excellent tools to offer that can significantly simplify the process of map creation.

These are the map editors that are universally considered the best among the Minecraft fans. They will help you create any type of adventure map you want, be it a parkour, a puzzle, or some sort of a settlement. The only limit is your imagination!

MC Edit

MC Edit is definitely the most popular Minecraft map editor out there. It’s easy to work with and the abundance of tools allows you to create highly complex maps in a short span of time.

It utilizes the Minecraft schematic type of files that makes it extremely easy to transfer your creations from MC Edit into your Minecraft client. It is also widely used by many map creators to share their works online.

The best part about MC Edit is that you can copy and paste huge chunks of world from one place to another. This means that you don’t need to build the same structure twice – just build one and then make as many copies as you need.

It makes the creation of cities and complex structures much easier, since you don’t waste time on repeating the same actions over and over again.

World Painter

This simple tool is designed to help you paint Minecraft terrain just like you would in the standard Microsoft Paint program. It is very convenient and requires almost no prior knowledge or experience with any design software.

World Painter is super intuitive and is fully compatible with Minecraft schematics, meaning that you can upload the structures you’ve made in MC Edit into your custom world.

Basically, World Painter is used for creating the landmass, and then you fill it with things that you create in other tools.

When you get tired of the same biomes and vanilla structures in Minecraft, it is time to install World Maker – a unique tool that generates radically different worlds than those you’re so used to seeing.

You will be able to generate giant floating islands in the sky covered by massive water bubbles, forests covered with huge trees that will make you look like a tiny squirrel, planetoids that consist of some valuable ores, and many other objects.

On top of that, you will encounter new kinds of mobs, plants, desert volcanoes, portals to other worlds, etc. This is just a small list of all the unusual things you will find in World Maker.

MC Dungeon

MC Dungeon is similar to World Maker, but it is focused solely on generating unique types of dungeons. They will not be empty, but full of all sorts of secrets and hidden treasures that are also procedurally generated, so there will always be an element of surprise.

The Hard Mode offers additional spawners with mobs that will await you in the darkest corners. However, the rewards will be higher as well, just as the number of traps and secret doors.

If you like scavenging for treasures in the unknown areas of Minecraft, then MC Dungeon is a perfect tool for you.

Это видео одно из редких гайдов на русском языке, которых очень мало на Ютубе, и из-за этого русскоязычная часть аудитории игры Майнкрафт, мало что знает о программе по созданию миров World Painter. World Painter, или же на русском Ворлд Пайнтер, прекрасная программа на Майнкрафт, которая позволяет с помощью набора кистей и инструментов, создать шедевральные миры, почти на любую версию Майнкрафт, хоть то Майнкрафт 1.14.4, или Майнкрафт 1.15, или же Майнкрафт 1.12 Этот русский гайд World Painter поможет вам разобраться с этой сложной программой, которая к сожалению не имеет русского перевода. По этому я постарался узнать по-больше информации о World Painter, перевести её на русский, и рассказать всё в этом World Painter гайд. Мне очень жаль, что русское комьюнити игры Майнкрафт не знает об этой программе, а последний, популярный, обзор World Painter на момент выхода ролика, вышел 5 лет назад! Надеюсь, я Tomatiy, исправлю это, и смогу помочь как можно большему количеству людей. Если вам нужно скачать World Painter и кисти для World Painter, то выше я прикрепил ссылки для скачивания и установки World Painter и кастомных кистей на программу. Есть куча модификаций этой программы, но Worldpainter для minecraft есть только на официальном сайте, по этому остерегайтесь подделок. Так же, разработчик world painter minecraft просит вас поддержать данную его, задонатив ему. Если программа помогла вам, и вы получите много положительных эмоций, то поддержите разработчика World Painter. WorldPainter требует мощный компьютер, а точнее процессор и оперативную память, по этому при работе в этой программе у вас может лагать Майнкрафт, по этому советую заценить мой прошлый ролик на тему Оптимизация Майнкрафт. Хоть для world painter туториал на русском, это большая редкость, но я считаю что по этой программе world painter уроки должны быть для всех, особенно для людей из стран СНГ, которые не знаю английского языка, по этому можете поддержать Томатия, перейдя по ссылке выше, и задонатив за проделанную работу.
Worldpainter требует много времени, чтобы научиться грамотно работать в нём, и не имея отличного и грамотного world painter туториала, вам будет сложно разобраться в World Painter. The Biomes Viewer

The Biomes Viewer is a tool located in the Tools menu of WorldPainter. It opens a new window, which will show you a view of the biomes Minecraft will generate for a particular seed and world type. You can change the Minecraft world type (Default or Large Biomes) using the drop down list in the toolbar on the top left, and the seed in the field next to it.

To display the biomes it needs access to a Minecraft installation (it actually invokes Minecraft code to calculate the biomes). If you have a supported version installed in the default location, WorldPainter should find it automatically. If not, you will not be able to use the Biomes Viewer.

You can drag the map around with the middle or right mouse button, and you can zoom in and out by scrolling the scroll wheel.

Creating WorldPainter Worlds

You can use the Biomes Viewer to create new WorldPainter worlds. This has two advantages: it allows you to choose the surroundings of your world when you leave the WorldPainter-generated part, and it allows you to create irregularly shaped worlds.

To do this, first find the seed, world type and location (by dragging the map with the middle or right mouse button) where you want to create your world (it can be anywhere; it doesn’t have to be in the middle). Then, select the tiles which you want to be part of the WorldPainter world. To select tiles, left-click to select or deselect individual tiles, or left-click-and-drag to flip the selection of a rectangular area of tiles. It doesn’t have to be a rectangular (or even a contiguous!) selection.

When you’re satisfied with your selection, click on «Create world» in the toolbar on the bottom left. You will be taken to the regular New World screen, where you can configure the terrain settings to your liking. When you click Create, the new world will be created in the shape and location you selected. When you Export this world, it will be in same surroundings as displayed in the Biomes Viewer, once you leave the WorldPainter-generated part!

Creating Minecraft Maps

You can also skip creating a WorldPainter world altogether and create a Minecraft map directly, with the seed and world type selected in the Biomes Viewer, and the spawn point set to the location of the white cross. This allows you to pick the biome and surroundings where you want to play manually, but let Minecraft generate all its own terrain.

To do this, just select a seed, world type and location (by dragging the map with the middle or right mouse button) and click on «Play here in Survival mode» or «Play here in Creative mode» in the toolbar on the bottom. WorldPainter will ask you for a name for the new map, and then create it in your Minecraft saves directory (which should be in its default location, otherwise WorldPainter won’t be able to find it). When you next start Minecraft, the new map will show up under Singleplayer. You can also export it to a server and turn it into a Multiplayer map just like you can do with any other Singleplayer map.

Note that the spawn point is not exact. For some reason Minecraft sometimes likes to spawn you quite a way away, possibly in water. Just swim to the surface and look around if that happens, the location you chose should never be far away.

My best World Painter project to date that I have finally finished after 2 weeks of making it.
I just wanted to share it with everyone and give them a download.
There are a few streams that thanks to the way water generates in Minecraft kind messes up some things but you can always fix that in game.
There are also the top of the streams that are not connected to the mountains, I would have done it in world painter but it wouldn’t look good and is just better to do by hand.

I don’t mind if this world is used in any projects of yours but if you do use it and post it on any kind of social media I would like you to credit this page and provide a link so that others may use this world.
DO NOT take credit for my project please 🙂

This is for Java Edition and no Bedrock ports are planned

I’ve heard that you can insert new materials and ores into the World Painter program in order to make the world compatible with mods.
Basically, I’ve got a mod pack that includes TONS of new ores, and I want the world I made to have these ores randomly generate, and I’d like a tutorial showing me how to do this.
Anyone know of anything like that?

Some mods have it built in where you can retro generate ores to a current world, i believe Tinkers Construct and Thaumcraft have this, more may also have it.

It would be a config setting, so have a look at the mods config first. The devs added this as they know some people like to make a map but their mod isn’t ready and will add the mod later.

Thanks for the great idea! Sadly it didn’t work. I have too many mods, and lots of them don’t have retro gen.
However I did figure out a trick. Load a world with all your mods, then import the world into World Painter, then mess with the surface however you want, then merge it with the old world file. This way, all the undergrounds layers will remain the same (all your fancy ores), but the surface will become whatever you want it to be.
I’ve done some tests, and it works, I just now trying it out with a built up world to see how badly it ruins my buildings, haha.

If anyone knows an easier way to do this I’d love the help.
I can’t see how to input mod ore generation into the maps.

However, having stumbled on your question, I can tell you that this is what the Custom Underground Pockets layers are for. You can create such a layer for each mod block you want to occur underground. Then paint each layer where you want the ore to occur, or if you want it everywhere, use the Global Operations Tool to paint the layer everywhere quickly. You can hide the layer from view by unchecking the checkbox in front of it, so it doesn’t clutter up the editor.

Note that if you need block ID’s above 255 you can enable «extended block ID’s» from the Edit menu.

I’ve been writing a story in my spare time, and as I was coming up with the setting, I thought it would be a really good idea to recreate it in Minecraft to get a feel for it physically, but due to the strange shape I had in mind, I thought it would either look unnatural or take forever. The steepness value is the best thing to use for mountains imo. It lets you have grass on flat parts and stone on the edges, and it looks much more natural than just spraying on a texture past a certain height

I only just got into Minecraft (yeah yeah, I know I’m super late to the party) and I always thought people always made those epic maps block by block. Had no idea the process could be this easy. Nice tutorial, definitely gonna rewatch a few times to learn the basics.

I was just watching Hermitcraft season 8 and some creators DO make epic mountains block by block apparently :’) (GoodtimeswithScar, Grian, Mumbo Jumbo all had amazing mountain-like megabases near the end of the season.) It’s kind of fascinating.

I am making a world that is custom made for a story I’m developing, I already have a map, and i thought I would have to terraform by hand or get a server with plugins. This is so much easier and runs so smoothly!! Thank you for making this incredible tutorial. If you are planning on going more in depth on what you can do with the program i will definitely watch the video even if it’s hours long.

I have a few questions. So. the worlds you create. how big are they? Are they set sizes? does the infinite world generation kick in after a small span on water surrounding the world kinda like the Legacy console addition worlds if moved to bedrock.

I just got World Painter and love what it can do, but there seems to be a bug; no matter which settings I select, the World Painter window eventually starts cascading or sticking what it shows. The only work-around I’ve found is to drag the entire World Painter window off-screen, then back. Do you know what might be causing it to glitch like that? It overlaps the button or brush menus with stuck images, and it makes it a chore to find and use them.

If I selected 512×512 world size would it occupy a single region file of whatever biome I select? and would it be possible to decrease terrain in parts to the point of being a void outline? and can I have the terrain start at a higher elevation? I’m basically trying to build a variety of floating islands for a void map and this would go a long way, especially if I can have different islands be at different elevations. If I have to go in later and manually remove the bottoms in game that would be fine as it will still save me time.
oh yeah, and I see a structures option, but as I understand such structures use absolute coordinates instead of relative coordinates so renaming region files breaks it, right? So I’d have to keep that deselected unless I intend for the region file names to remain the same, right?
I bought your drive last week so looking forward to seeing what I can do with it.

This is what I would like to know. Can WorldPainter work for particular set heights? I ask this, because of what I’ve drawn and their specific heights. I don’t want new contour lines put on top of what I’ve already drawn, and my mountains are very specifically drawn. So is it possible to keep to the height distance between the contours?
I really want this showcase to be a thing, and I’ll have to download the CubicChunks mod as well because I intend for the tallest mountains to be at least 9000m tall, like a real world counterpart. My dungeons would have to be built to a 1:1 scale too. I have no 3D generating software I can understand or use, and world painter allows for 2D to become 3D it seems, which is what I want.

World Painter Custom Brushes/Tutorial.

Heres some height maps I yoinked off google then tinkered with to make some nice looking realistic mountain brushes for the external minecraft terrain editing program world painter.

Its also very easy to make or find your own. Use this official tutorial, or try searching «Heightmaps» in google images.

Some simple guidelines to follow for making brushes:

Some good programs for creating/editing brushes are GIMP and/or Photoshop. GIMP is a really good free, opensource alternative to photoshop.
Also, if using an unedited version of google images, make sure it is square, or cut/re-size it to make it square in one of the above programs.
To install your own brushes, follow the same steps as below.

How To: Make/Use Biome Objects in WorldPainter!

Here I have a quick tutorial on how to make and use biome objects. There are a few programs that use these, but I shall concentrate upon WorldPainter.
In order to understand this, I recommend you have a decent knowledge of WorldPainter. It can get pretty heady at spots.

What are Biome Objects/.BO2 files?

But for our purposes, say there are only 5 different tree shapes available. These trees would be randomly placed wherever they are able to be spawned, and randomly rotated as well. With that, you could wander through a dense forest for days and never realize that there were only 5 types of trees.

How do we use Biome Objects?

Now, whether or not MC works like that, that is how WorldPainter works. If you can gather a set of Biome Objects, or Bo2 files, you can put them in a layer and paint them on your map. Some examples:

I have an entire forest thing made up of those trees, and they are all the EXACT same tree. They were all randomly rotated, however, so you can still get away with it and have it look good.

Alright, cool. Now how do I make a biome object?

MAKING that tree was a tad bit more difficult. I first built it in Minecraft, standard procedure. Then I opened up MCEdit and selected the tree and the layer of ground underneath it. Once I had that selected, I hit the Export button on MCEdit, and made it a schematic in a folder near the directory I kept my Bo2s.

Whew, that was hard. Now that. Wait, there’s more.

Now for the Data. From the origin of the bo2 (In BetterBOB, you can see it as little grey block on layer 0), the first three numbers are coordinates. The fourth number is the block. For this tree, I did mess with these. Notice that all the bark on the tree is actually bark on all sides? There is no top or bottom. With the wood block (ID 17) you can add an additional data value afterwords to set what type of wood and what orientation is should be in.

I used 17.15, jungle wood with all side bark. A ctrl+f, going to replace, and clicking replace was what I did. However, be warned, if you do Replace All, it will replace all occurrences of the number 17. That includes the 17 coordinate rather than the block value. So, I went through manually, hitting replace and then next when there was a 17 I didn’t want to change.

NOW are we done?

All that work later, I now have a bo2 of a WaterVineTree, as I called it.

Custom Brushes

WorldPainter allows you to use custom brushes, enabling you to quickly create original and/or realistic terrain in all kinds of ways. A custom brush is simply a grey scale image, placed in the custom brushes folder. You can either create it yourself using a paint program such as ​ GIMP or ​ Paint.NET, or you can use custom brush or height map images taken from the Internet. Height maps of mountains, for instance, make good custom brushes.

For good results, there are some guidelines you should follow for creating or adapting the image:

Installing

Note: you can organise the custom brushes into separate subdirectories inside the brushes folder, which will show up as separate palettes in WorldPainter. This is especially convenient if you have many custom brushes, to prevent the palette from becoming so large that it doesn’t fit on the screen.

Hello everyone, my computer has been having some problems lately. So I am unable to do anything in Minecraft. So I got bored and decided to make this map in pure World Painter. It’s kind of a project saying that hi, I’m here still. Lol But yeah, here is some info about the map: I started this map a month ago and never got back to finish it till last week. The project took 40 hours to make, I made every custom object myself except some of the trees. Credit for the trees will be listed bellow. I had a lot of critique from IBuildPixels, so that I can make the best map I can. The island has a few biomes: Jungle, Tropic Mesa, Desert, Mesa, Volcanic, Mountain Terrace, Swamp and Redwoods.

This map is ready for survival mode!

Présentation de World Painter

Ce logiciel se démarque clairement des autres par le biais de son aspect plutôt simpliste et optimisé, afin de répondre aux attentes des utilisateurs les plus exigeants.

World Painter est pourvu de nombreux boutons permettant de varier les résultats : on peut ainsi construire une gigantesque montagne comme une petite forêt de pins. Il offre aussi la possibilité de créer des pyramides plus ou moins grandes, des souterrains, de grandes fosses, etc.

On appréciera aussi la possibilité de visualiser en 3D les résultats de la création en direct, afin d’avoir une légère impression du rendu en jeu.

Les bases de World Painter

Malgré l’interface accessible à tous, comptez tout de même une bonne heure avant de prendre connaissance des bases du logiciel : le résultat final variera bien sûr selon la minutie dont vous avez fait preuve.

Le programme est très simple d’utilisation. Les boutons à gauche servent a sélectionner l’outil, les clics gauche et droit à utiliser les outils (le bouton droit ayant la fonction inverse du gauche, pour surélever ou creuser le terrain)

La fonction “Load” (charger) et “Save”(sauvegarder) utilisent le format WorldPainter. Ce format pourra changer et l’avenir et ne plus être compatible avec vos maps actuelles

La fonction “Export” exporte les maps au format Minecraft dans le dossier spécifié. Elles peuvent être exportés directement dans le dossier de sauvegarde ou dans un autre emplacement.

Notre avis

Dès les premières manœuvres sur WorldPainter, une certaine satisfaction s’installe : les fonctionnalités sont plutôt nombreuses et offrent la possibilité de fabriquer un environnement de qualité sans donner énormément de fil à retordre. Quelques petits bogues sont toutefois bien présents, mais ne perturbent pas beaucoup le travail des mappeurs.
