World Trigger is written and illustrated by Daisuke Ashihara. The series started its serialization in the 11th issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump published on February 9, 2013.[2] Due to health issues on the part of the author, it was put on hiatus after the 50th issue in November 2016.[3] The series returned in the 48th issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump on October 29, 2018 and ran until the 52nd issue on November 26, then it was transferred to Jump Square on December 4, 2018.[4] Shueisha has collected its chapters into individual tankōbon volumes. The first volume was released on July 4, 2013.[5] As of February 4, 2021, twenty-three volumes have been released.[6]

Briefly about World Trigger manga: In the city of Mikado (280,000 inhabitants), one day a “gate” to another planet suddenly opens. From them, creatures called “Neighbors” begin to appear. Many men and women are scaring of them. And Earth’s weapons do not work. But a secretive force begins to battle the Neighbors. So, they, the security service, are the “Frontier” agency. And they develop a system of protection from the Neighbors. Ever since then, all the Neighbors still come out of the gate. And the residents of Mikado City continue to live in the city. Humor Kuga, the humanoid Neighbor. He comes to Mikado City, in which he meets the Frontier representative, Osama Mikumo. This takes place four and a half years later… When the gates unlocked at the very first moment.

“World Trigger” is an interesting example of how a completely standard shonen can be implemented. But, in the 21st century, sci-fi stories about organizations resisting alien invaders can hardly be calling something new and original. The same can be saying of the whole “World Impulse” in general. However, in the external drabness and lies the advantage of this manga. The story is dividing into two parts. Еhe interaction between the characters between the battles. And the battles themselves. There is a small digression to be made here.

The vast majority of today’s “teenage manga” authors tend to put drama and melodrama into their stories. As well as not to go past the philosophical explanations. Anyway, back to the manga. Ashihara Daisuke didn’t follow the example of the aforementioned authors (probably deliberately, realizing that he wouldn’t be able to pull it off at a decent level). There is no contrived drama, no forced romance, no complicated social/moral dilemmas in Peace Pulse. And also no snot-nosed snot-nosed reflectors on any occasion (the author has bypassed all the sharp corners). How.

So, the location of the main action is a military base. And here is the first simple move – all combat and training activities are carrying out in a trio body. Showing war in all its “glory” is not a trivial matter in itself. And the author understand that he is not Coppola or Klimov). Secondly, the line of “fathers and children” is practically removing from the narrative. Third – the “Border” organization is not under the direct jurisdiction of the government and the military (self-defense forces). And fourth on the list, but not in importance, is the deceptiveness of the characters.

In Japan, a gate to another dimension has opened, giving violent alien lifeforms known as Neighbors the opportunity to cross into our world and wreak havoc. To combat this new threat, the organization Border was founded. Their soldiers use highly advanced weapons known as Trigger to fight the Neighbors and preserve the peace. Enter New Transfer Student Yūma Kuga, who has only recently moved to Japan and is unfamiliar with the local customs.

World Trigger is a shonen manga by Ashihara Daisuke that is serialized on Shonen Jump since 2013, and is currently still ongoing. The series had a humble beginning, but eventually became known for its interesting take on human resource management and strategy combat using its large cast.

Toei Animation took on the anime adaptation with Season One released for the Fall 2014 Anime season on TV Asahi, and ended in April 2016 when it almost Overtook the Manga. Season Two ran from January 2021 to April 2021, and Season Three ran from October 2021 to January 2022.

During 2016, the manga took frequent one-week breaks due to the author’s poor health. In November, the manga went on an unexpected indefinite hiatus. Almost two years later, in mid October 2018, it was announced that the series would return for a five-chapter run, (enough to fill out the volume 19, along with four chapters left over from before the hiatus) starting on the 29th, and then continue publication in the monthly Jump Square magazine starting on December 4 (also the release date of volume 19).

World Trigger. This is one manga that is extremely underrated and needs more followers. With the end of the longest arc, I can see just how much talent Ashihara has.

Art:
Oh man, the art is amazing and fits a sci-fi setting. Each character, Trigger, and background is drawn with so much detail that you can virtually see the characters moving in battle. And the colour pages are extremely appealing, anime worthy.

Character (spoilers, read at own risk):
While not World Trigger’s biggest point, it certainly deserves to be acknowledged. An example of character development in the series would be Osamu. He is one of the few shonen protagonists who are weak and work hard for their strength. On top of that, he has strength in other forms like mental resilience and intelligence, which Ashihara cleverly uses. Another example of this would be Chika’s high strength but low battle ability.

Overall, I have enjoyed the story very much and can see it becoming very successful if Ashihara keeps up his unique and interesting way of storytelling and showing.

Honestly I had low expectations when I first started. But as I read each chapter, I was looking forward to the next chapter so much! Very underrated manga I’d say. This is my first review so I hope I do good!

Oh man, the art is one thing I love about this manga! One of the few manga where I find every single character design hella appealing! The art style is really fitting for a sci-fi genre. I also like how much detail is put into the backgrounds.

Character: 7
Urgh, the characters are great too! The character development! The MC in this isn’t your typical shonen main like Naruto. Mikumo Osamu is weak in combat compared to the other casts (he is actually weak he doesn’t go op even after going through months of training). But his quick thinking and tactics make it up a lot. He gets the most development in this manga. He may be frustrating to see but just pay attention to his growth.

Kuga Yuuma is Osamu’s partner and a shocks you at the end of the first chapter! His =3= face is the best! He also gets some development so its fun to see him grow in the course. He first starts off ignorant and gradually learns from Osamu. Osamu also learns from Yuuma.

Amatori Chika is a smol precious peach that must be protected. Like Osamu, she can be quite frustrating to watch for some people. Her growth irather slow, but it pays off later.

Jin Yuuichi, he’s one of those cheerful «big bro» type but as the series progresses, you find out his down side which makes me want to cry. His ability he has is op, but there are limits that makes it interesting. But the more you read it, it become more apparent that the author is plotting something about Jin.

WT had ridiculous amount of characters but I would let it slide because of the world building. The many characters are needed because WT relies on team battles and the use of tactics instead of one on one fighting most shonen does. Even when they do one on one fights, each characters figure out and either defeats or get out of the situation in a interesting way. The tactics they use to fight are pretty creative and refreshing to see in a shonen manga.

It’s hard remembering names unless you’re a hardcore fan like me. But don’t worry! Every time the minor characters appear, the manga shows their name, age etc.

Again like the story, some may come off as tropes, but each character’s are handled nicely. The interactions between character make up their lack of appearance. The way they interact is honestly quite refreshing.

Another thing I like about the character is that they don’t get any random power ups. Even the ones that you think is gifted and OP, they always have some sort of harsh consequence (for example Yuuma).

Man, I really wish more people would give this manga a chance! Although, the pacing in the first few chapters might be slow for some of you, it gets really good! So again, please give WT a chance. It is very underrated.

With the upcoming adaptation it’s high time this series got at least one review on MAL. Let me say it straight from the start: at this moment (ch. 55) it’s an OK battle shounen, that many readers will find entertaining, though I can’t shake off the feeling that it’s a bit tryhard. WT works diligently on being a good action series for teens but rarely strives for more and doesn’t show many moments of brilliance. However the potential of the series is great and it can develop into something more profound in future.

The plot promises a lot. Most likely at some point in future the heroes will travel to another world or even worlds, and it may even happen soon, but until now the story has been pretty slow. Battle shounen doesn’t work without strong enemies and those appear around 50th chapter. Until then it had been mostly introduction and status struggle. A rank battle was even mentioned, but thankfully it won’t come or it is postponed. So I’d say that there is potential too, but the flow isn’t that good. My problem is that so far it has been pure shounen. The best works in the genre usually have something for more adult audience as well – some conflicts outside of the usual topics of saving friends and becoming stronger, but WT doesn’t develop these motives enough.

The setting is interesting and ripe with possibilities, most likely there’re a lot of hidden secrets. The monsters are good. The huge amount of parallel worlds perpetually at war allows for any number of interesting developments. The system of power is more or less detailed and logical. The not so good part is that they made things easy for the fighters. Despite all the talk about battlefields and everybody being battle-hungry 100% of time, until now it has been mostly a video game – nobody gets scarred physically or mentally during fights (townsfolk does sometimes, but offscreen). In battle mode the bodies are replaced with artificial constructs, so gruesome injuries do not matter. Combatants can bail out at any given moment. There’re even special virtual environments to train without care. I understand that it is a teen series, but some things are made way too convenient. These conveniences make battles look a bit less tense, than they should be in a series focused on exactly battling. It is changing slowly and the stakes and consequences are mentioned, but I can’t help but get the feeling that they have it easy even compared to the other shounen series.

In short, in my opinion, WT is a solid and for the most part entertaining series, which, unfortunately, still doesn’t reach the upper tier of its genre, though it is very possible that it will develop in the future, so I wish it a long run.

Ashihara was a huge fan of Doraemon, and was inspired by the idea of using future technologies in the present. [1] Before drafting the story, Ashihara created the characters and world. He placed those characters in various roles to see what would work. [2] In the original concept, Yūma was a Border agent, while Osamu was a human who wasn’t in Border. Ashihara wanted to create a concept of opposites, so he made Yūma a powerful Neighbor, and Osamu a weak Border agent. [3]

One day in Mikado City, a gateway to a parallel universe had opened. From it, an outbreak of aliens known as Neighbors wreaked havoc across the city with their own sophisticated technology. Suddenly, a mysterious group of people brought themselves together to repel their attacks. Soon after, Border was revealed to the public, an organization researching Neighbor technology and maintaining a defense system against the Neighbors. Its members are armed with co-opted weapons known as Triggers. Four years later, the city has recovered from initial Neighbor attacks to the point where its civilians have become used to them.

Yūma Kuga is a transfer student from a foreign country admitted to a local school. There, he meets fellow classmate Osamu Mikumo and a group of bullies harassing the two. After fighting off the bullies, a Neighbor appears. One of the bullies is about to get eaten, but Osamu (who is actually a member of Border) activates his Trigger, but fails to defeat the Neighbor, leaving Yūma to activate his own Trigger and defeat it successfully. Yūma reveals he isn’t part of Border, as his Trigger was a memento of his dead father who had wanted him to move to Japan to join Border. He also reveals his father wasn’t part of Border either, and that he actually transferred from the alternate dimension where Neighbors come from, the Neighborhood. He had come to find his father’s acquaintance.

Following this revelation, a Rad Infestation takes place where Rads were hiding in various locations within the city (outside of the Forbidden Zone) and opened gates for Trion Soldiers to pour in. One of these places was the school, where Osamu failed to stop them, but Yūma used his Trigger and Osamu’s to defeat them. Because using training Triggers outside of Border was forbidden, Osamu is evaluated for punishment. Along the way, an Ilgar attacks the city, and Yūma is compelled to use his Trigger in secret to save civilians, alerting Border of his existence. He helps solve the Rad mystery. With Osamu’s suspicious defeat of the Marmod that attacked the school, Miwa Squad begins monitoring him. At the same time, Osamu introduces Chika Amatori to Yūma, a girl who attracts Trion Soldiers. Yūma reveals this is because of her abnormally large Trion amount. Miwa Squad, having surveyed Osamu, discover Yūma’s identity. Yūma easily defeats them in a battle with his Black Trigger, so Kido orders the capture of the Trigger.

Yūichi Jin, an S-Rank agent of Border affiliated with Tamakoma Branch, invites Yūma to join Border. Yūma discovers that his father’s acquaintance, Sōichi Mogami had passed away by becoming Jin’s Black Trigger Fūjin, leaving him with hardly any motivation to remain on Earth. Replica reveals Yūma’s other goal to Osamu, so Osamu has Yūma join him in a team to recover Rinji Amatori and Aoba Harukawa. Yūma agrees. While being introduced to Tamakoma Branch, Jin engages with the assault force assembled by Kido which consists of Tachikawa Squad, Fuyushima Squad, Kazama Squad, and Miwa Squad. With the help of Arashiyama Squad, he defeats them. To ensure Yūma’s safe enlistment into Border, he gives up Fūjin.

Yūma and Chika enlist in Border and make a flashy debut. Even Osamu becomes famous for tying with Sōya Kazama, the No. 2 Attacker. However, a new threat emerges: a Second Large-Scale Invasion. The Neighbor nation, Aftokrator, sends 6 agents to capture C-Rank agents and find someone with high trion levels to sustain their planet. During this invasion, Jin predicts that Osamu may die. A new Trion Soldier, Rabbit, is deployed: capable of capturing agents and more powerful than the average B-rank combatant. With the arrival of humanoid Neighbors and Black Triggers, Border is met with superior technology, but using teamwork, they defeat their adversaries. Osamu is left severely wounded, but survives. One of the Neighbors, Hyuse, is left behind, while another, Enedra, is killed by his comrade.

Osamu’s troubles are not over, though, as several C-Rank trainees were kidnapped; it is speculated that his being defeated without Bail Out in front of the enemy Trion Soldier led to them learning of the trainees’ lack of Bail Out. However, he manages to deflect this attention to the prospect of entering the Neighborhood and recovering the kidnapped personally. Following this, Border experiences a much higher application rate. At this time, the B-Rank Wars begin. Yūma and Chika rise to B-Rank, forming Tamakoma Second with Osamu. They participate in the Rank Battles and face various opponents. They win their first 3 matches with relative ease. However, their fourth match is a huge loss as they challenge the top B-Rank Squads. The captain of the B-Rank #1 Squad, Masataka Ninomiya, reveals that he has information regarding Rinji’s disappearance, but refuses disclosure until Tamakoma Second has qualified for the away mission, deeming it useless to reveal otherwise.

Aftokrator orders its vassal nations to cripple Border’s offensive power. Galopoula sends its Expedition Force while Rhodokhroun sends Trion Soldiers. Their objective is to destroy the Away Ship. Border manages to repel the invaders, and in the process, Hyuse learns that Galopoula received orders to disregard him, sensing that something dire was going on in Aftokrator.

Following Osamu’s negotiation with Kido, Hyuse joins Tamakoma Second to help them board the Expedition Force that will journey to the Neighborhood, as he has similar goals. At the end of the Rank Wars season, Osamu’s team reaches B-rank #2. But before the away mission comes the Away Mission Test, a series of tests spanning several days in order to evaluate the most qualified applicants.

World Trigger. This is one manga that is extremely underrated and needs more followers. With the end of the longest arc, I can see just how much talent Ashihara has.

Art:
Oh man, the art is amazing and fits a sci-fi setting. Each character, Trigger, and background is drawn with so much detail that you can virtually see the characters moving in battle. And the colour pages are extremely appealing, anime worthy.

Character (spoilers, read at own risk):
While not World Trigger’s biggest point, it certainly deserves to be acknowledged. An example of character development in the series would be Osamu. He is one of the few shonen protagonists who are weak and work hard for their strength. On top of that, he has strength in other forms like mental resilience and intelligence, which Ashihara cleverly uses. Another example of this would be Chika’s high strength but low battle ability.

Overall, I have enjoyed the story very much and can see it becoming very successful if Ashihara keeps up his unique and interesting way of storytelling and showing.

Honestly I had low expectations when I first started. But as I read each chapter, I was looking forward to the next chapter so much! Very underrated manga I’d say. This is my first review so I hope I do good!

Oh man, the art is one thing I love about this manga! One of the few manga where I find every single character design hella appealing! The art style is really fitting for a sci-fi genre. I also like how much detail is put into the backgrounds.

Character: 7
Urgh, the characters are great too! The character development! The MC in this isn’t your typical shonen main like Naruto. Mikumo Osamu is weak in combat compared to the other casts (he is actually weak he doesn’t go op even after going through months of training). But his quick thinking and tactics make it up a lot. He gets the most development in this manga. He may be frustrating to see but just pay attention to his growth.

Kuga Yuuma is Osamu’s partner and a shocks you at the end of the first chapter! His =3= face is the best! He also gets some development so its fun to see him grow in the course. He first starts off ignorant and gradually learns from Osamu. Osamu also learns from Yuuma.

Amatori Chika is a smol precious peach that must be protected. Like Osamu, she can be quite frustrating to watch for some people. Her growth irather slow, but it pays off later.

Jin Yuuichi, he’s one of those cheerful «big bro» type but as the series progresses, you find out his down side which makes me want to cry. His ability he has is op, but there are limits that makes it interesting. But the more you read it, it become more apparent that the author is plotting something about Jin.

WT had ridiculous amount of characters but I would let it slide because of the world building. The many characters are needed because WT relies on team battles and the use of tactics instead of one on one fighting most shonen does. Even when they do one on one fights, each characters figure out and either defeats or get out of the situation in a interesting way. The tactics they use to fight are pretty creative and refreshing to see in a shonen manga.

It’s hard remembering names unless you’re a hardcore fan like me. But don’t worry! Every time the minor characters appear, the manga shows their name, age etc.

Again like the story, some may come off as tropes, but each character’s are handled nicely. The interactions between character make up their lack of appearance. The way they interact is honestly quite refreshing.

Another thing I like about the character is that they don’t get any random power ups. Even the ones that you think is gifted and OP, they always have some sort of harsh consequence (for example Yuuma).

Man, I really wish more people would give this manga a chance! Although, the pacing in the first few chapters might be slow for some of you, it gets really good! So again, please give WT a chance. It is very underrated.

With the upcoming adaptation it’s high time this series got at least one review on MAL. Let me say it straight from the start: at this moment (ch. 55) it’s an OK battle shounen, that many readers will find entertaining, though I can’t shake off the feeling that it’s a bit tryhard. WT works diligently on being a good action series for teens but rarely strives for more and doesn’t show many moments of brilliance. However the potential of the series is great and it can develop into something more profound in future.

The plot promises a lot. Most likely at some point in future the heroes will travel to another world or even worlds, and it may even happen soon, but until now the story has been pretty slow. Battle shounen doesn’t work without strong enemies and those appear around 50th chapter. Until then it had been mostly introduction and status struggle. A rank battle was even mentioned, but thankfully it won’t come or it is postponed. So I’d say that there is potential too, but the flow isn’t that good. My problem is that so far it has been pure shounen. The best works in the genre usually have something for more adult audience as well – some conflicts outside of the usual topics of saving friends and becoming stronger, but WT doesn’t develop these motives enough.

The setting is interesting and ripe with possibilities, most likely there’re a lot of hidden secrets. The monsters are good. The huge amount of parallel worlds perpetually at war allows for any number of interesting developments. The system of power is more or less detailed and logical. The not so good part is that they made things easy for the fighters. Despite all the talk about battlefields and everybody being battle-hungry 100% of time, until now it has been mostly a video game – nobody gets scarred physically or mentally during fights (townsfolk does sometimes, but offscreen). In battle mode the bodies are replaced with artificial constructs, so gruesome injuries do not matter. Combatants can bail out at any given moment. There’re even special virtual environments to train without care. I understand that it is a teen series, but some things are made way too convenient. These conveniences make battles look a bit less tense, than they should be in a series focused on exactly battling. It is changing slowly and the stakes and consequences are mentioned, but I can’t help but get the feeling that they have it easy even compared to the other shounen series.

In short, in my opinion, WT is a solid and for the most part entertaining series, which, unfortunately, still doesn’t reach the upper tier of its genre, though it is very possible that it will develop in the future, so I wish it a long run.

«Extremely underrated» this is what I have seen all too often from most of my friends and various reviewers on MAL, so I’d told myself I’d give it a try. Quite frankly, someone has to take the bad role here, and I’m expecting a fair amount of hate for this review, but no matter, I’ll stay as impartial and clear as possible.

Bland. Bland. Bland. I’m using that word too much, I know, but I don’t have more appropriate terms in English to describe the overly boring charecters of the show, so instead I’m gonna use the French word «chiant», have fun googling it. The MC is the epitome of the shonen character, strong, virtuous, practically flawless, oblivious, always believing his «nakama» and standing up no matter what. Reminds you of anything? Of course it does! It’s practically any other damn shonen MC ever created! The main problem with this manga, like I believe I said earlier, is its lack of originality. Most of the supportive characters are mostly plot convinient and have the rather usual upbringing in shonens.

Art: 7
Probably the strong point of this manga. While it is definitely not the most beautifully drawn manga out there, the art is quite steady, it improves quite well with time as well as being visually appealing. The character designs are surprisingly well done, so I don’t have much complaints about it.

Enjoyment and overall note: 4
And I’m being generous here, the thing I hate the most (after messed up adaptations) is the lack of originality in stories. I believe the world created in this manga had a lot of potential, especially after I had seen the first chapters, I thought to myself «huh, maybe this shonen could be fun after all!» Oh, how wrong was I. All of this brings me to my final and next point: I do not think I have to judge one’s taste, but I really do wonder what in the world do people find interesting and underrated it this. I can’t quite bring myself but to think of this as another generic shonen story.

Overall I’d like to recommend the series but if you don’t like when a series doesn’t conclude I’d recommend waiting to see if it starts back up before reading.

I have read alot of Shounen battle manga. Any big name series you can think of, I have probably read it, whether to completion or gave it a fair shot before dropping it. I am a sucker for stories about the teenage kid who gains supernatural abilities and uses said abilities to thrawt evil and save the world. From starting the first chapter to catching up to the latest, in this aspect, World Trigger is no different from any other battle shounen. However, it managed to subvert my expectations in ways that not even HxH has been able to do for me.

The supernatural abilities in World Trigger are not only unique, but allow the author alot more creative freedom when it comes to battles. Trion (Chakra, Haki, Nen equivilent for reference) at first doesn’t sound like anything you have never heard of before. The difference here is that Trion isn’t harnessed through the power of will, but through a technological suit the characters wear to harness this inherit power all humans have. The Trion Body as it is known, acts as a special layer of power for the characters, however when a character runs out of Trion, the suit launches the main body back to a secure base. To me, this is genius. This allowed the author to literally decapitate main characters in fights they cannot win without killing them off. There are no fights that I can think of that the main cast survived due to any sort of asspull for lack a better term. If they lost the fight, they lost, no last second powerup, no savior at the last moment, an unwinnable battle is simply that. This circles back to what I said earlier about team work in the series, this forces the cast to come up with well thought out stretgies to get the upper hand on their oppenent in a much more grounded way than any other battle manga I’ve read up to this point. The amount of creativity in the Trion weapons is also strong point for me. Short range weapons such as swords and axes, medium range weapons such as bombs and guns, and even long range sniper rifles are just some of the many forms Trion takes in World Trigger which allows for each fight to be different from the last while still being consistant with the rules of the world that author has crafted.

The final big takeaway for me is the character development shown. The main character has a much more mature attitude than other shonen protagonists I have seen. This is a bit of a spoiler so caution ahead, but the way Osamu, the mc, handles his defeats is what subverted my expectations the most in this series. Rather than gritting his teeth, training everyday, and using the power of his will and friendship to overcome hurdles, Osamu instead decides to focus on what his strengths are rather than overcoming his weaknesses. Now that may sound off at first, but in tandem with the team battle aspect of the series, it works perfectly. Instead of trying to be both the ace and captain of his group, he comes to the conclusion that playing a support role for his ace as captain will and does lead to a higher rate of sucess. This conclusion that the mc comes to was a breath of fresh air for me. Rather than the main character merely percerviering like usual, or subverting tropes by having the character go down a darker path using questionable methods, seeing the main character coming to the very grounded and mature conclusion that he doesn’t need to be the star of the show everytime was a development I never expected.

The world building in this series is also unique to the point that I am unable to think of any other series to use as a reference to prevent spoiling some of the twists and reveals as to who or what exactly the «Neighbors» are.

In terms of criticisms, I felt the beginning of the story to have too many info dumps and character introductions that made the first 20 chapters feel a bit overwhelming. The art is a bit bland at first, but it does grow on you as you continue along and remains consitant throughout.

In conclusion, World Trigger has alot of heart. The author cares about the story he is telling and it shows in the creativity and depth he gives both the characters and the world. If you are like me and are looking for a battle manga that is same but also different from its counter parts, or you dislike the same old tropes that plague the genre. I heavely implore you to give World Trigger a chance, it may exceed your expectations as it did mine.

There is no contrived drama, no forced romance, no complicated social/moral dilemmas in Peace Pulse. And also no snot-nosed snot-nosed reflectors on any occasion (the author has bypassed all the sharp corners). How.

So, the location of the main action is a military base. And here is the first simple move – all combat and training activities are carrying out in a trio body. Showing war in all its “glory” is not a trivial matter in itself. And the author understand that he is not Coppola or Klimov). Secondly, the line of “fathers and children” is practically removing from the narrative. Third – the “Border” organization is not under the direct jurisdiction of the government and the military (self-defense forces). And fourth on the list, but not in importance, is the deceptiveness of the characters.

Waarudo Torigaa manga:

The child’s appearance and demeanor are combining with emotional stability, calculativeness. Plus with the reasonableness of a formed man. Left out are the insecure tantrums with “enormous power”. And the flighty knuckleheads with “incredible hidden potential.” Nobody shouts to the world about themselves, their importance and their aspirations.)

In Mikado City (280 000 inhabitants), a “gate” to another world is opened unexpectedly one day. World Trigger is written and illustrated by Daisuke Ashihara. The series started in Shueisha’s shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump on February 9, 2013. [2] Due to health issues on the part of the author, it was put on hiatus in November 2016. [3] The series resumed publication in the same magazine on October 29, 2018, and ran until November 26 of the same year, before being transferred to the monthly manga magazine Jump Square on December 4, 2018. [4] Shueisha has collected its chapters into individual tankōbon volumes. The first volume was released on July 4, 2013. [5] As of December 3, 2021, twenty-four volumes have been released. [6]

In North America, Viz Media licensed the series for English release in 2014. [7]

Anime

In North America, Toei announced in July 2015 that they would be producing an English dub with Ocean Productions. [33] [19] The series began airing in the United States on Primo TV on January 16, 2017. [34] The English dub became available on Crunchyroll on February 11, 2020. [35] In September 2020, Crunchyroll announced a «home video and electronic sell-through distribution» partnership with Sentai Filmworks to distribute anime titles on home video. [36] The series was released on Blu-ray on June 8, 2021. [37] On October 8, 2021, it was announced the English dub of season 2 will be released in 2022. [38]

Video games

A PlayStation Vita action game developed by Artdink titled World Trigger: Borderless Mission (ワールドトリガー ボーダレスミッション) was released in Japan on September 17, 2015. [39] An iOS and Android game developed by Ganbarion titled World Trigger: Smash Borders (ワールドトリガー スマッシュボーダーズ) was released on July 21, 2015. [40] It was later released on PlayStation Vita on February 17, 2016. [41] Both were published by Bandai Namco Games.

Reception

In the year of 2016, a survey conducted by Oricon found that World Trigger was the 20th best-selling manga, with over 1.2 million copies sold. [42] In a 2016 reader’s poll on goo, the series was voted the 5th most likely to become a Weekly Shōnen Jump signature series. [43] On TV Asahi’s Manga Sōsenkyo 2021 poll, in which 150.000 people voted for their top 100 manga series, World Trigger ranked #14. [44] As of October 2021, the manga had over 15 million copies in circulation. [45]

The anime series ranked 10th in the Tokyo Anime Award Festival’s top 100 TV anime series of 2016. [46] During NHK’S top 100 anime voting, World Trigger placed 158 out of 400, tied with Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare». [47]

Rebecca Silverman of Anime News Network said that «World Trigger is an exciting read that distributes its information organically rather than relying on info-dumps.» [48]

The first season of the anime received criticism stemming from Toei’s handling of the adaptation. Gabriella Ekens from Anime News Network referred to the production as «incompetent» and «baffling», stating «World Trigger isn’t a bad show, but it’s a terrible adaptation.» [49]

My third favorite manga of all time. World Trigger does so much good. I wrote an immense review for the series but basics: a huge cast that is actually mostly likable, an emphasis on teamwork and strategy that is never compromised, unique and exciting action, excellent sense of humor. The series is not necessarily going to grab you at first, though, so give it 20 chapters to really get going.

Really love this series, its certainly not the best, its not the most polished, but its everything I enjoy in manga.

A large, interesting and diverse group of characters with their own fighting styles and abilities, some interesting quirks here and there, and the strong characters aren’t unbeatable gods of combat.

It can definitely be cheezy and the shounen elements are patently obvious, especially at the beginning, but its surpassed alot of my expectations, the story just keeps getting better and better. The writing is solid all the way through, its almost as if World Trigger were written for more western audiences in mind; the premise isn’t really gimmicky or extreme compared to many other shounens, and the attention to detail in the writing is very strong. Overall, i look forward to reading more of this

Hybrid between Naruto and Bleach minus the constant power ups, add in a bit more tactics and a bit less 1v1s. The intricate team fights are what keeps me reading this despite some annoying factors (like how slow the pace is at times).

Human(oid)s will always be the main antagonists in these type of battle shounen with the robots/monsters just being mere pawns. The internal politics and strife presented in the plot seem forced, but it gets toned down after an arc. The doppelgängers fights with easy escape don’t offer much suspense during most of the fights. It’s basically people fighting in video games and then overload you with tactics theorycrafting for an arc.

And god damn I don’t know why it bugs me so much that shounen stories NEED to have the majority of their cast be under the age of 20? This setting allows no reason for a huge age range of people being enlisted for service. Heck, if you ignore the excuse of innate magic talent, it makes more sense to see 0 kids in the fighting force, let alone the elite sector.

I did not expect to like this manga so much. The pace is rather slow, but in exchange, this is one of those rare shounen battle manga in which both protagonists and antagonists act smart (or at least much smarter than outright dumb). For instance, they strike at weak points, don’t attack when they don’t think they can win, don’t explain their abilities (I hate it so much when that happens), use special abilities (like foresight, camouflage, etc.) in smart and not trivially obvious ways, and so on.

PS: In terms of rating, this is a clear 10 for me, and the individual story arcs are highly recommended, but given the manga’s pace and the author’s health issues, I’m worried whether the overarching arc will receive a conclusion worthy of what came before.

PPS: The scanlations of early chapters in particular often have a terrible translation quality. Luckily, World Trigger was popular enough to receive an official licensed English version, and I had no issues with translation quality there.

It’s been a long time since I’ve felt so excited about a (fairly new) shounen action series. (Or, at least, one from a mangaka that I’ve never heard of before.)

World Trigger begins fairly typically: with monster invasions and an overpowered boy who is more than he appears appearing and saving the day. If I was judging this manga just by its opening chapters, my reactions would definitely be «bored» and «unimpressed.» It definitely seems like a «been there done that» series at first glance. And, while it never entirely rises above the story cliches it uses, it does undoubtedly set itself apart with its battles and characters.

Let’s start with characters.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that Osamu wasn’t a bait-and-switch protagonist. You know the type: appears on the first color page, has a prominent role in the first chapter, but ultimately is shown to have bitten off more than he can chew and is then saved by the real protagonist. Aforementioned boy then either disappears into oblivion or is relegated to the support of comic relief background character for the remainder of the series. Well, Osamu isn’t like that. He actually remains an incredibly prominent main character throughout the series, and, as an added bonus, he doesn’t get a shounen power-up to make him more in-line with traditional «strong» male protagonists. Instead, even when he is made the «leader» of a team, he remains mostly weak, and his primary strength is his hard-working personality. I don’t know about you, but I for one really appreciate protagonists like these who show that you don’t have to be superpowered in order to be a hero.

Chika is also a great protagonist to read about, especially because she fulfills all the criteria for the typical damselled girl character (or one who is consistently put into a supporting role), but the mangaka averts this by making a point to say that Chika herself wants to fight on the frontlines. The recent chapters have definitely been great at showing this point.

Yuuma is probably the weakest, character-wise, of the three protagonists, though the mangaka’s careful rendering of his backstory (and consequent explanations for his appearance and actions) definitely makes up for it. I also like the fact that, while Yuuma is undoubtedly the strongest of the bunch, he never takes up too much of the spotlight, and the mangaka is really good at dividing up the screentime between the different characters.

Now, the battles are another thing that World Trigger does really well and really differently.

Unlike most other shounen action manga, World Trigger’s battle sequences are heavily dependent on strategy. They’re very incredibly thought out, too, especially for a weekly series. It’s rare that I find a series that’s able to put this much thought into action scenes (even monthlies often have trouble with this!) while still having it flow smoothly from chapter to chapter. Honestly, I can’t think of another shounen action series that employed this much strategy in each of its battles. The huge cast of supporting characters doesn’t make this easy either, but the mangaka handles them all wonderfully.

Of course, the story for World Trigger is in its very early stages right now, and, as I mentioned, the premise itself is still riddled with cliches, so I can easily see this going downhill if the mangaka runs out of steam. However, this really is the first time in a truly long while that I’ve read a shounen action manga and went, «Wow, this could definitely make something of itself. Something incredible that everyone will remember forever.» So I’m definitely giving World Trigger the benefit of the doubt, at least for now.

TLDR; while the story itself isn’t all that interesting or unique, the characters and the battles are. read it for them; it’s worth it.

edit: OK, almost 100 chapters now, and I’m still really enjoying this. It’s still strategic in the best ways and really, really friendly in the way it handles defeats. I myself have gotten really sick of the upsurge in grimdark shounens recently where everything is DEATH and SUFFERING (well more of the latter than the former—shounen leads seem capable of losing so much blood without any lasting consequences), so World Trigger is a really nice change of pace. It’s a rare thing to see a manga where the stakes feel real/tangible but side characters aren’t dying like every two chapters.

It’s still not really elevating itself in terms of overarching plot, but each chapter is so well-thought out and just plain fun that I don’t even care. (Also, if you’re buying the volumes, Ashihara’s comments are hilarious. He’s really great at nailing dry humor.) World Trigger really sets itself apart with its consistency—it’s just a really solid series with a solid cast.
