Magazine / Shonen Jump

Shonen Jump (or «Shounen» via extended romaji) is a Shōnen Japanese manga anthology magazine owned by Shueisha Publishing, beginning as a bi-weekly series but soon switching to Weekly Shonen Jump in July of 1968.
The original magazine is practically synonymous with works that focus primarily on fighting and action; Shonen Jump is often considered to be its own subcategory of shonen anime and manga. Due to its high popularity with young teen boys (rivalling only CoroCoro Comic an iconic children’s magazine), many have seen early Jump manga as the Trope Codifier for many series that would follow in its later works as well as its competitors.
Thanks to the popularity of Jump in its home country, there have been many exports of its well known manga worldwide during the West’s manga boom. One attempt to bring Jump to America was through the magazine Shonen Jump (also known as Shonen Jump US), an English-language manga anthology magazine that was published by Viz Media in the US from January 2003 to March 2012. It mainly carried translations of manga that first appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump, but tended to publish them on a monthly schedule similar to the earliest output of the Japanese Jump. The magazine introduced many Americans to some great series, such as Naruto and One Piece. According to The Other Wiki, it featured a total of twelve series in its first six years, previews of many others that Viz publishes, and articles on Japanese culture and language. In addition, every issue included anime, manga, and video game reviews as well as tips for various card games related to manga series, and several times included promotional cards with an issue.
Weekly Shonen Jump also contains a significant number of sister magazines, both former and current, and both for Shōnen and Seinen demographics listed below.
Its Distaff Counterparts are the shojo-oriented Ribon, Margaret, and Cookie (as well as Shonen Book‘s older ancestor Shoujo Book), while Cocohana is their josei equivalent. There was even a shojo-oriented sister-magazine to the Viz Shonen Jump called Shojo Beat! that came out in the early 2000’s, but sadly it didn’t make as much money as the publishers hoped, and in 2008, the magazine was discontinued. Viz continues to use the trademark as a label for its compiled releases of shoujo content.
Many of these series are featured in various video game crossovers, the most prominant are: Jump Super Stars, J-Stars Victory VS, Jump Force, and JUMPUTI Heroes.

Looks like on the 18th and 4th of every month, as it is a bimonthly (I believe?) magazine.

Don’t you mean bi-weekly? if it’s twice a month.

Bi-weekly would mean two times a week. Bi-monthly means two times a month.
Edit: Apparently it is ambiguous.

I don’t read the last chapter of this manga (exept for gantz), but I think it’s counting :
Liar Game
REAL
Zetman
Gantz
Kaiten
Harasho
Re: Weekly Young Jump (Seinen Mag by Shueisha)
What surprises me about WYJ is how few of the current series are licensed. REAL and Gantz are the only I can think of. Even after expanding their Signature line VIZ has clearly favored Shogakukan. Maybe it’s to make up for whoring WSJ, dunno
At some point I expect Liar Game and Zetman to be released. Both would be nice additions VIZ Sig. Past that: I don’t know. Sports series don’t get licensed anymore, so no Nononono. I can’t really think of anything else that will take precedent, at least with VIZ, over Shogakukan seinen. Or smaller publishers like Ohta Books and Hakusensha.

Liar Game (On-hold, ch.17)
Gantz (On-hold, ch.308)
Kamen Teacher.
Besides these three I haven’t read anything besides smaller series (Like Alive! and Hot Milk) and one-shots.

So i was checking out coverland for nononono raws and they had the finale chapter up. It looks like no x4 was canceled since the wiki has it as ended.

From what cookie_on_fire said in the Nono thread the ending seems rushed, like it was canceled.

Yea so weird the last chapter was like a parody. Seems that the main character was put on a bus.

Re: Weekly Young Jump (Seinen Mag by Shueisha)
Seems odd. I subscribe to Young Jump, Nono no No usually ranks around the lower half but it’s not last or anything. It usually ranks around the same range as Kokou no Hito. But then again, the TOCs in YJ are much less effectual than in the really competitive magazines like Jump where being near the bottom means you’ll get canceled if you stay there for 10 weeks.
I think what’s usually at the top is Gantz (which is always first if it’s in the magazine), Kingdom, B Kata H Kei, Shin Salaryman Kintarou, Usogui, Deliver Cinderella, and REAL (When it’s in the magazine).
I think Zetman is usually around the middle. Though that one has infrequent serialization, too. So does Rozen Maiden. Captain Tsubasa is in that area, too.
But I don’t read most series besides Kokou no Hito and Gantz, and ordering subscriptions online end up not showing up until a week after the street release date, sometimes a few days later.

Re: Weekly Young Jump (Seinen Mag by Shueisha)
Hm. Ok, well I’m checking the Japanese YJ wikipedia page. This seems to be the current status of each current series as of last issue, in order of when they started:
Hm, so actually quite a few are very recent. I hadn’t realized that. I guess it’s because Young Jump usually reserves their covers for models rather than stuff about series. With a few exceptions like when a series that was on hiatus comes back.
Weekly Shōnen Jump
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The mid-1980s to the mid-1990s represents the era when the magazine’s circulation was at its highest, 6.53 million copies per week, with a total readership of 18 million people in Japan. The magazine has sold over 7.5 billion copies since 1968, making it the best-selling comic/manga magazine, ahead of competitors such as Weekly Shōnen Magazine and Weekly Shōnen Sunday. [6] Throughout 2019, it had an average circulation of over 1.6 million copies per week. Many of the best-selling manga originate from Weekly Shōnen Jump.
Shōnen Jump spawned the Jump magazine line as well as the Jump Comics imprint label for publishing tankōbon. Weekly Shōnen Jump has sister magazines such as Jump SQ, created after the fall of Monthly Shōnen Jump, Ultra Jump, Weekly Young Jump, virtual counterpart Shōnen Jump+ which boasts its own exclusive titles, and Saikyō Jump. The magazine has also had several international counterparts, including the current North American Weekly Shonen Jump. It also spawned a crossover media franchise including anime and video games (since Famicom Jump) which bring together various Shōnen Jump characters.

Young Jump is part of the Seinen demographic that is focused on male adult readers but different than magazines like Grand Jump, Young Jump series has a notable «younger» tone, which is the strongest point of the magazine, being able to produce adult series but still with mainstream appeal.

Into the sky towards the dancing birds
Let’s fly with only hope in our hearts
These words may not be beautiful but they come from within
I’ll show you more fragments of my true feelings
Take a chance, we can still make it
Take a chance, be true to yourself
Take a chance, so let’s chase after our future
The feelings born that day have started moving
«It’s now, it’s now!» I hear a voice say, the moment is ripe
Jump up HIGH!!
The wind gives us courageous, fresh courage
What you can do now is just let it begin
It’s not stupid if you’re having fun!
Big or small, I don’t care, jumpin’ up higher!!
I’m not embarrassed to be earnest
I’m proud of myself, if I can do just one thing, it’d be feeling proud of myself, so how about it?
Keep goin’, because happiness
Keep goin’, has many varieties
Keep goin’, I’ll make one you like and give it to you
One day we’ll be there, close to our dreams
One more step, one more step, let’s dance together, you have fully blossomed!
Jump up HIGH!!
Into the sky towards the dancing birds
Let’s fly with only hope in our hearts
Being happy is the best, no use always being down!
Let’s laugh from our hearts, jumpin’ up higher!
Tell me what kind of dreams you have sleeping within you
Jump up HIGH!!
The wind gives us courageous, fresh courage
What you can do now is just let it begin
It’s not stupid if you’re having fun!
Big or small, I don’t care, jumpin’ up higher!
Being happy is the best, no use always being down!
Let’s laugh from our hearts, jumpin’ up higher!

Liar Game: Roots of A #2
After being inspired by Professor Yukiya Okabe, fourth-year student Shinichi Akiyama has decided to pursue graduate studies to learn more about the human mind. While Akiyama is having a one-on-one consultation with the professor, a faculty member from another department, Mitsumasa Iwashita, interrupts the two. As Iwashita urgently requests to discuss an important matter with Okabe, Akiyama cuts his consultation short. However, that does not stop Akiyama from eavesdropping on their conversation. He overhears that the science entrance examinations have been stolen, and one of his close friends, Kouichi Aratani, is accused of being responsible for this occurrence. Having known him since high school, Akiyama believes that his peer would never commit such an offense. With the guidance of his professor, Akiyama goes through every possible detail in this exceedingly intricate case. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
Underdog
What is the purpose of your life? To live is just to die? Is life a slow death? Do you even have your own purpose? Nao is a college student with such thinking. yet, reality is cruel to him. Ever since he was a child, he was categorized as a «ghost boy» whose existence was so faint that no one cared about him. One day, after being mentally traumatized by a child in a family restaurant, Nao snapped and poisoned that child. While being interrogated by the police, a mysterious beauty appeared and rescued him. Her reason was simple: «do you want to dominate the world with me?» (Source: XscansX)

Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru
Only the fastest and most budding runners from different universities can participate in the most prestigious marathon relay race in Japan—the Hakone Ekiden. Now in his last year of college, the enthusiastic Haiji Kiyose has yet to realize his dream of becoming an athlete worthy of the event. To get himself closer to achieving his ambition, he must assemble nine other men in his run-down dormitory, Chikusei-sou, who will race alongside him. Meanwhile, first-year student Kakeru Kurahara is supposed to have a quiet, reserved life. However, after recklessly handling his rental payment, he finds himself at a rough start, sprinting away with stolen convenience store food. Soon, he runs across Haiji, who immediately recognizes the young man—a former runner ill-famed for his history. As they stop their cat-and-mouse chase, Haiji offers him to stay in Chikusei-sou, and Kakeru accepts it halfheartedly. At the apartment awaits students of different origins and characters. The addition of Kakeru to the place enables Haiji to execute his next step. However, of all the residents, only Kakeru currently knows about Haiji’s eccentric plan! When Haiji finally unveils his fervent goal, can the rest of the team commit to his wishes? [Written by MAL Rewrite]
Weekly Shonen Jump
The mid-1980s to the mid-1990s represents the era when the magazine’s circulation was at its highest, 6.53 million copies per week, with a total readership of 18 million people in Japan. The magazine has sold over 7.5 billion copies since 1968, making it the best-selling comic/manga magazine. Throughout 2019, it had an average circulation of over 1.6 million copies per week. Many of the best-selling manga originate from Weekly Shōnen Jump.
Shōnen Jump spawned the Jump magazine line as well as the Jump Comics imprint label for publishing tankōbon. Weekly Shōnen Jump has two sister magazines called Jump SQ, created after the fall of Monthly Shōnen Jump, and Saikyō Jump. The magazine has also had several international counterparts, including the current North American Weekly Shonen Jump. It also spawned a crossover media franchise including anime and video games (since Famicom Jump) which bring together various Shōnen Jump characters.

Weekly Shonen Jump was launched by Shueisha on July 2, 1968 to compete with the already-successful Weekly Shōnen Magazine and Weekly Shonen Sunday. The Weekly Shonen Jump’s sister publication was a manga magazine called Shonen Book, which was originally a male version of the short-lived shōjo manga anthology Shojo Book. Prior to issue 20, Weekly Shonen Jump was originally called simply Shonen Jump as it was originally a semi-weekly magazine. In 1969, Shonen Book ceased publication at which time Shonen Jump became a weekly magazine and a new monthly magazine called Bessatsu Shonen Jump was made to take the place of Shonen Book. This magazine was later rebranded as Monthly Shōnen Jump before eventually being discontinued and replaced by Jump Square.
Famicom Jump: Hero Retsuden, released in 1988 for the Famicom was produced to commemorate the magazine’s 20th anniversary. It was followed by a sequel: Famicom Jump II: Saikyō no Shichinin in 1991, also for the Family Computer. At its highest point in the mid-1990s, Weekly Shonen Jump had a regular circulation of over 6 million. In the last few years, its circulation has been about three million. In 2000, two more games were created for the purpose of commemorating the magazine’s anniversaries. A crossover fighting game titled Jump Super Stars was released for the Nintendo DS in 2005. It was followed by Jump Ultimate Stars in 2006.
Newcomer Awards
Weekly Shonen Jump, in association with parent company Shueisha, holds annual competitions for new or up and coming manga artists to create one-shot stories. The best are put to a panel of judges (including manga artists past and present) where the best are given a special award for the best of these new series. The Tezuka Award, named for manga pioneer Osamu Tezuka, is given for all different styles of stories. The Akatsuka Award, named for gag manga pioneer Fujio Akatsuka, is a similar competition for comedy and gag manga. Many Weekly Shonen Jump manga artists have gotten their start either winning or being acknowledged by these competitions.
