A brief overview of German postal codes history
When it comes to the German postal codes then starting from a bit earlier can be amazing. So, let’s have a brief overview of history of German postal codes here:
Beginning of German postal codes:
Germany introduced its very first postal codes on 25th July, 1941. Initially, the system of postal code was based on a two-digit system that was initially applied for the parcel delivery system. However, later on it was used on entire mail deliveries. • In 1962 the two-digital postal code system was replaced with a four-digit postal code system in West Germany. Whereas a postal code system with spaces was introduced by the Federal Republic, that was left for the postal system of East German after a reunification. • The German Democratic Republic has a code system that utilized entire codes that were starting from 1 and 9 for East Germany only.
German postal codes before reunification:
Before reunification, both the German Democratic Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany were using a four-digit postal code system. Following a transitional arrangement with reunification from 1989 to 1993 the West side postal codes were prefixed with W such as W-1000 (for Berlin) 30, in Western cities postal districts were separate from postal codes customary and in east postal codes with O.
Composition of Present German Postal codes:
Currently, numeric, 5-digit postal codes have been used in Germany since 1993. From 1990 to 1993, the former four-digit postal codes prefixed with O for Ost and w for West was used. However, the West German kept some numbers unused until later East integration. In the 1990s, it was decided that this is the time to recreate a completely new system where larger cities and towns will be divided into multiple postal code areas and the companies getting a lot of mails could also get assigned private code. This helped them in creating a system where the number of zeros in the postal code of a city could not identify the size of the cities anymore.
Later on, post boxes were managed to arrange in racks containing multiple dozens of them. While, each of these racks were being identified by specific postal codes. The 1993’s German postal code system is containing geographical on the first two levels, for example, 10 is a zone in inner Berlin city while, 1 is indicating North East Germany. The current system is completely an updated one as per 1993’s modification.

ZIP Codes are basically 5-digit numbers developed by the United States Postal Service to identify and represent individual post offices across the United States. Most of the Countries has their own Postal systems developed in their country such as India, Czech Republic, Italy, Brazil, Germany, Switzerland etc. The United States Postal Service (USPS) has segmented the country into 10 ZIP Code areas. After the first number in a ZIP Code is assigned, the USPS assigns the next two numbers according to a city. the USPS will assign the first ZIP Codes of main town and cities. After that, the ZIP Codes will proceed alphabetically.
The first three digits of a ZIP Code together usually indicate the sectional center facility to which that ZIP Code belongs. The fourth and fifth digits of the ZIP Code represent the area of the city or town.
For example, if a letter is received with a ZIP Code of 94127, the USPS can know that it’s in California (9), it’s in San Francisco county (41), and in the area of the Westwood Highlands (27).

How can I visualize zip code data of Germany?
I have a count for each German zip code (e.g. something like this) and I would like to visualize it.
For simplicity, lets say my data looks like this:
Now I would like to create a heat map.
I’ve seen pyGeoDb which looks as if it could fit my need, but I don’t know how to use it. And it also seems not to work with Python 3.

Trending sort
Trending sort is based off of the default sorting method — by highest score — but it boosts votes that have happened recently, helping to surface more up-to-date answers.
It falls back to sorting by highest score if no posts are trending.
Switch to Trending sort
I use Google Fusion Tables for a lot of things like this. It does geocoding for free, and heatmaps is one of its basic functions. Easy to embed on webpages, or dig into more deeply with custom JS if needed.
I have the same problem and I got pyGeoDb working with python3, yet I have to use a workaround (Ubuntu 17.10):
make the following alterations:
open a terminal
At least for me it works fine and the maps are created without errors. The only drawback I encountered is that it takes some time and the resulting *.pdf is quite large (at least several 100 megs)
There probably is a more elegant way of doing this, yet for me this is sufficient and working.

Postcode (Germany)
contents
History of the postal code systems in Germany
precursor
In 1917, Carl Bobe divided Germany into large areas, regional areas and local areas in an organizational scheme.
The one to two-digit system
Introduction in the German Empire
The postcode should appear in a circle about the size of a penny to the left of the destination, in brackets for typewriter fonts. The destination also had to be underlined.
Additional official designations were added to some place names.
Places that were supplied by post by rural service posts had to be marked with the information «above» and the name of the responsible control office below the destination.
(19) Parey about Genthin
The street name was written below the destination or control office.
Further use after 1945
Area Codes
In the 1950s, fewer and fewer letter writers kept to the postcodes. Only every third shipment had the postal area code in the address. This even led to the fact that in the early 1950s there were considerations in the area of the Federal Post Office to dispense with postcodes completely. In the mid-1950s, however, the situation had become obsolete due to the upcoming automation of the letter distribution service and a new system was being considered.
Outside line codes for packages
The systems in the old Federal Republic and in the GDR
German Federal Post Office
German Post of the GDR
The GDR system was essentially similar to that in the Federal Republic. The post office position could be recognized by the postcode: routing post offices were given two or three-digit postcodes. Other post offices were given four-digit numbers ending with 2 to 9, usually preceded by the number of the respective lead post office. If more than eight post offices were assigned to a lead post office, their numbering continued in the next range of tens. Post offices were usually given the last digit 1 after the number of the routing post office. This number was assigned several times, so that different post offices received the same postcode.
similarities and differences
In the course of the introduction of electronic data processing in 1979, the two or three-digit postcodes in the GDR were made four-digit by adding zeros.
The Deutsche Bundespost recommended its postal customers:
«. in your own interest, in future, the character ‘x’ must be indicated immediately and without a hyphen in front of the Soviet zone postcodes according to the following models for mail items to the Soviet occupation zone :
x43 Quedlinburg x532 Apolda x6821 Watzdorf «
According to the agreement on postal and telecommunications between the GDR and the Federal Republic of Germany of March 20, 1976, the country code D- the West German postcode and the code GDR- for postal items in the opposite direction have been placed in front of mail from the GDR to the Federal Republic individual letters were correctly delivered in the 1980s even without these additions.
Delivery post office
The five-digit system
Introduction of a uniform system
From 1990 there were two four-digit postcode systems in the now unified Germany. Of a total of 5420 postcodes, 3400 were in the west traffic area and in 2020 the east traffic area. Therefore, in postal traffic with the respective other traffic area, an «O-» for «Verkehrsgebiet Ost» (for example O-2300 Stralsund ) or a «W-» for «Verkehrsgebiet West» (for example W-2300 Kiel ) was allowed in front of each postcode in order to maintain the uniqueness, «until a new, customer-oriented and efficient postcode system, which is permanent, is available.» It was not necessary to place this in front of the respective traffic areas. For shipments from abroad to Germany, a D had to be introduced, so that designations such as DW-1000 Berlin or DO-1134 Berlin resulted.
The proposal to change only the 802 postcodes, which had been assigned twice, and to otherwise leave everything as it was, was rejected, especially since deficiencies in the West German system had already become apparent in the 1980s, which should be remedied as part of the five-digit solution. These shortcomings mainly consisted of the fact that the mail automation and letter sorting made it impossible to pre-sort large mail recipients or parts of the city.
One of the deciding factors for the introduction of the five-digit postcode was that it enabled sufficient reserves. New bulk recipients, new post office box cabinets or new building areas can be easily integrated into the system. For this purpose, for example, between the consecutive numbers of the postcodes for the post office box cabinets and the next occupied postcode there is at least one, but usually several unoccupied postcodes. In total, around 30,000 of the theoretically possible 100,000 postcodes are used in Germany today, while the rest serves as a reserve. Due to further restrictions, it can be assumed that there could be a maximum of 98,901 postcodes.
The biggest change in the new system took place in 2001, when in Leipzig as part of the carried incorporations besides renaming of streets and the new districts new postal codes have been assigned.

Postcode types
The postcodes can be divided into different categories. The most common type is the post office box postal code, followed by the home delivery postal code, which, however, applies to the vast majority of postal users. Large recipients either receive their own postcode from Swiss Post or share it with other large recipients. Promotion postcodes are used for certain mostly one-off promotions by bulk recipients, such as postal votes and competitions.

Since January 1, 2005, the field post has also switched to an orderly system, so that since then the field post number can be used to identify the deployment. From this date onwards:
Publications
Official works
Postal code books
With the introduction of the four-digit system in the 1960s, in which all post offices were given their own postcodes, it became necessary to publish postcode books.
The Bundespost’s first postcode book was published in 1961 by the responsible Federal Ministry and distributed free of charge to all households. The reference work had a total of 368 pages, the first four contained a foreword by the Minister and preliminary remarks on how to use the book. On the last seven pages there was space for your own important addresses and sample addresses.
In 1979 a numerical directory of postcodes was published in the administrative area of the Deutsche Bundespost. The data are from March 1979. The postcodes of the GDR were not recorded.
In 1964, before the introduction of the four-digit system, Deutsche Post also published a postcode book in the GDR. With the adaptation of postcodes to electronic data processing, a new postcode directory was published in 1978. Unlike the 1964 edition, this directory also received districts and residential areas without their own post. The postal code directory was published again in 1984 and 1989.

Search the ZIP codes
Only in UK we have for about 55,000 CAP. How could we know all of them? By using the search function of europacco.com it is easy to find out the postal code of a country or knowing the other of another city. It’s enough to select the country and enter the location and you will receive a list of Postal Codes. Of course, you can also just enter your zip code and see immediately what cities, villages, neighborhoods, districts or streets may belong to it.
The postal code is a combination of numbers or combination of letters and numbers that is part of the address to define the exact location for the delivery of letters, parcels and pallets. Today, these codes are absolutely essential, not only for post offices, but also for private expeditions. In addition, the CAP are also used by other companies in the private sector to outline areas such as in the service industry.
In most countries of the world, these numbers form a hierarchical system. The first digits are often used to divide the country from north to south or east to west. As a result, many companies are using this elaborate zoning for market research or for other business activities. The system is designed to a high standard, the postal code corresponds to the geographical nature of the country. The boundaries of the codes are almost always also real boundaries, such as rivers or roads and almost never exceed insurmountable barriers, such as without bridges rivers.
Gone are the days when postal codes were used only for the delivery of mail or parcels. The search using the ZIP codes on internet is getting more and more both for finding popular shops and compare prices in different zones etc.
The German Empire was the first state in the world to have introduced in 1941 the system of postal code. It was followed in 1963 by the United States of America and a year later also from Switzerland that invoked this system. Nowadays, almost all countries of the world have a system of postal codes, except for some African countries, Yemen, Peru, Guyana, Suriname, the Antarctic and the small island states of the Pacific. Most countries use a system of 4, 5 or 6 digits, some countries also coming up to 10 numbers in their system. Other states, such as United Kingdom, Canada or Argentina utilize also the letters in order to compose their ZIP Codes.
In any conception CAP system there is always a certain number of special cases. For example, large companies have their own postcode. Other numbers have, for example, internal use, as in the case of the center of the devastation of letters.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has assigned the codes for naming countries and their subdivisions. Various types of ISO Standards are available such as ISO 3166-1, ISO 3166-2, ISO 3166-3. ISO 3166-1 is divided into 3 sets of country codes: ISO 3166-1 alpha2, ISO 3166-2 alpha3, ISO 3166-3 numeric.
Unique ISO Codes are assigned to the Countries and according to the ISO 3166/MA Codes are assigned on the basis of the native names of the country such as old names of the countries. It is derived from Country Name and the keywords such as Federal, Kindom, Democractic, United or Republic are discard from the Country Codes as they use the native names of the countries. For Example:
United Kingdom uses the 2 digit Alpha Code «GB» rather than UK
Germany uses the 2 digit Alpha Code «DE» rather than GM

Germany IBAN, BIC Format and Examples
1. Using since
2. IBAN Mandatory
3. IBAN Structure
The length of German IBAN is always 22 characters. The basic structure of the British IBAN is described below:
Where:
K = MOD 97 (ISO 7064) Checksum
B = Bank Code aka BLZ ( Bankleitzahl in German )
C = Account number ( Kontonummer in German )
IBAN Example:
National Bank Code ISO 3166 | IBAN Checksum | BBAN (Basic Bank Account Number)
Bank Code | Account Number
DE | 91 | 10000000 | 0123456789 |
Structure of Germany IBAN contains the following elements:
· Country Code is the two letter ISO code of the country. In this case it is ‘DE’ for Germany.
· Check Digits are the two digits after the country code. They are calculated via an algorithm and used for validation of the IBAN for common input errors.
· The bank code also known as BLZ ( short for Bankleitzahl ) with length of 8 digits unambiguously identifies the issuing institution. Any branch of that institution shall also be represented by the same bank code irrespective of its geographic location.
· The account number or ( Kontonummer in German ) has a maximum length of 10 digits. It can be shorter than 10 digits, in this case zeros are added before the account number until it is 10 digits long.
4. Validating a German IBAN
The most simple and common way to check the integrity of a German IBAN is to calculate the two check digits after the country code.
This protects against most common typing errors, but can still miss out IBANs which are generated incorrectly by the customer.
Information about IBAN standard and implementation in Deutsch.
Our system performs several layers of validation to ensure minimal to no chance of errors.
Layer 1: IBAN Check digit validation using the standard MOD97 algorithm to ensure there are no input errors ( typos ).
Layer 2: Domestic bankcode and account number ( blz/kontonumer ) is checked.
This step uses specific algorithms for each bank in Germany to ensure the integrity of the account number and bank code combination inside the IBAN.
Layer 3: Cross referencing the Bank Code / BLZ in our bank code directory to ensure that such bank exists in the registry.
This step also retrieves vital information such as the bank name, address and BIC code.
5. Calculating the IBAN
6. BIC and Structure of BIC Code
BIC codes ( also known as SWIFT codes ) are another bank identifier used in conjunction with the IBAN payments.
To ease the customers from remembering both the IBAN and BIC code from 1st February 2016 Germany has incorporated the SEPA IBAN only rule.
Put simply, only the IBAN is required to make domestic or cross-boarder payments from Germany.
German banks still have BIC Codes, but they are not important for the customers. Below you can see an example of a German BIC code:
7. Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA)
SEPA is an initiative of the European Union to simplify and unite bank payments within Europe.
Below we have listed the banks and institutions which support SEPA transfers and their specific markers.

ZIP codes for Brazil
3. Pick up by the courier!
„Correois“ – that is how the Brazilian post is called in the national language. Its origins root in the year 1663, precisely on January 25th. The date itself cannot be proven with historic accuracy. However, it has primarily a symbolic character.
The unbroken modernization of the national post system played an important role in the development of the whole country. Due to its capillary network and state of the art technologies, the post did not only serve the rising communicational requirements of Brazilian enterprises, but also worked as a financial service provider for the million inhabitants, in competition to the less linked banking system.
According to internal statistics, in February 2014 more than 125.000 employees worked for the public post system.
Structure of the Brazilian ZIP Code
In Brazil the ZIP code is called Código de Endereçamento Postal, in brief CEP. In 1971 the five-digit postal code has been introduced. In the beginning 90s, it has been expanded to eight characters. Whereas the first five ciphers indicate regions and sectors, in general the last three stand for streets. In rural areas with smaller localities, the last three ciphers are not specified and only shown as “000”. If the last three ciphers are higher than 899, with a high probability an exact address is indicated.
Brazil is divided into ten regions, starting with São Paolo. The remaining numbers have been assigned in anti-clockwise sense.
Example
In our brief example we analyze the postal code of the football stadium of Guarani F.C.
Brinco De Ouro Da Princessa
Av. Imperatriz Dona Tereza Cristina, 87
Jardim Guarani, Campinas
SP, 13100-200, Brasile

What is PIN Code or Zip Code and why they are used?
PIN CODE is abbreviation for Postal Index Number, Pincode is a 6 digits combination code used for identifying unique post office used by India Post for the delivery of mails and goods. It is very difficult to process the mails or parcels on the basis of address, basically Postal Codes are used to speed up the routing process the goods and mails to right direction.
What is classification of PIN Code?
First character of PINCODE represent the Region in India
Second Character of PINCODE represent the Sub Region in India
Third Character of PINCODE represent the sorting District of India
Last 3 Characters of PINCODE represent the Post Office of India
What is a ZIP Code and how does it work?
The ZIP Code full form is Zone Improvement Plan. A ZIP Code guides the destination post office or delivery area to which a letter or parcel will be sent for safe delivery of goods or mails. USPS delivery areas routes are directed by ZIP Codes in which goods are delivered.
Starting in the northeast, they are numbered 0-9.
How USPS assigns Zip Code?
