A Gaming Life

My life and video games, their experiences and my experiences while playing them.

Everywhere you look now, video games play a prominent part in modern life and regardless of whether it’s from a gamer’s point of view, from a journalist’s or a teacher’s, video games invoke a very real opinion. These can range from video games being a good thing, a bad thing or even an evil thing.

Ever since receiving a Master System and being brought up with a Spectrum ZX 128k+, video games have played a major part in my life, both the good and the bad. Coming from a rather under-privileged background — in comparison to most, but better than some — video games provided me with an escape that books and films offer to other people. Becoming engrossed in games I was bought for Christmas or birthdays, or ones I had saved up myself for, become a trip to the unknown for me, a chance to explore worlds that were beyond my reckoning and a chance to leave my humdrum life behind. This, though, came at a cost and a very real one at that.

To make sense of where I’m going with this, some backstory is probably appropriate.

I was raised by a largely single, jobless mother whilst living on a council estate in a tiny council house, in the roughest part of the Wirral. Despite her best efforts, I grew up to become quite the little shit despite my intellect and chose to rebel against almost everything on my life — except my mother. Freud would have a field day with me.

In between the events of my child and adult life, my father was in and out of that life. Playing the strict, “I’m looking out for you” role in between bouts of complete drunken annihilation, abusing my mother, and cheating with whomever came across his path, my father chose to show his feelings by either complete neglect, stern upbringing or bouts of abuse, often ending in tears of regret and labelling them as “your own fault, son.”

From a young age, I displayed varying levels of anger due to my predicament. These ranged from hurting myself, to becoming obsessed with fire, to hurting those around me and becoming a compulsive liar. Many events occurred as a result of my anger, many which I will not speak of, and some of which have had a permanent effect on myself, on those whom I love and on those whom I have now parted ways.

Right, that’s the backstory.

All throughout this time, I played video games to escape the monotony and the strife I was forced to face in my younger life. I also read books and drew a lot, but the core thing to lose myself was video games.

As a result of my anger problems as described above, I constantly diced with losing the control on my anger on difficult video games, or when my concentration dipped. Mostly, the only victim was myself when I realised I couldn’t play my games anymore down to having a smashed up controller or a broken console, or I had the system confiscated from me until I calmed down.

Later on in my life, video games were still my best friend, my crutch. Not learning my lessons, I still got angry, only now, as I got bigger, so did my explosions. Controllers were thrown with such force, that not only did they break, but they often broke the very thing they were thrown at — TVs, consoles, walls.

As consoles developed, so did the experiences and other features. The biggest change in my experience playing games with anger problem was the advent of online play.

Normally, where a difficult game or section that required the upmost concentration presented itself, it would be down to my own inadequacy or lack of concentration to blame for the outburst. With the unpredictability of online play, my outbursts became almost as unpredictable. Where I would be leading in a race on Burnout Paradise, only for lag to make me crash into an invisible car, or being shot by unbeknownst snipers in Call of Duty, online play was an immediate trigger for an already short fuse while gaming.

At this point, I was now in a relationship where my actions with gaming and anger were very real, and very scarring. My partner — now wife — constantly teetered around on eggshells whenever I played games, knowing an outburst or a flying controller could be anywhere around the corner. With a newborn child on the scene also, things were escalating to an almost life-threatening level.

Simply put, an anger problem and video gaming do not go together. Period.

I don’t mean that as a slight against anyone who uses a counsellor or sees a counselling team regularly, though. I just meant that it wasn’t for me given the depths of my anger problem.

I didn’t see this at first. I just thought I could sugar-coat it and hope for the best. I knew deep-down that counselling wasn’t working for me, but felt as though I should be going as I’m doing something. I didn’t care what, but I was doing something and was more concerned with the fact that other people thought I was getting the help I needed. Still, in all of this, video games were my escape and sought their warm embrace even deeper.

Alongside another thing that happened that almost cost me my own and another person’s life, the time came where drastic action needed to be taken before something drastic happened.

After this event, I sought more professional help past a counsellor. I went to my GP asking to be referred for more serious help —in other words, psychiatric help.

Now, obviously, video games weren’t the only problem in my life, so I’ll just stick to the game related sections of the help I needed and received, but you get the gist that I wasn’t a very well person and video games weren’t helping with the problems I had.

The first and most immediate conclusion to one of the areas of my anger was video games, and the first suggestion by my psychiatrist was to stop playing games. This was welcomed, of course, with complete rejection and a “fuck you” stance, not seeing the point trying to be made. I attempted to propose that I wouldn’t play online games — something I had consciously identified as a serious trigger — but insisted that I continue playing video games as my escape. Therein lied a problem about my problem. Denial.

Despite admitting I had an anger problem, and despite admitting that games made me angry, I refused to admit to, and denied that, video games alongside my anger issues were catalysts for extreme angry reactions and explosions. I just thought I could solider on, and keep playing video games. Truth is, I was scared that by not playing video games, I’d have to actually face up to my problems in life and I wouldn’t have that escape.

In the end, it took a desperate step from my future wife to make me realise the damage and the pain and suffering I was causing. Selling my PlayStation 3 with games behind my back felt, at the time, like an ultimate betrayal, and like a stab in the back. The rod, a beacon of hope, the crutch I had used for years, was gone.

And I only had myself to blame.

Continuing on with my treatment after the loss of my gaming life, I realised that despite the assurances to myself that gaming was helping me deal with life, in fact, it was the complete opposite. I was using games as a shield to protect me from life and its obstacles and, all the while, they were dragging me deeper and deeper into potential danger.

My treatment allowed me to explore different channels to funnel my anger and to use my anger in a productive way or, at least, a less destructive way. I found myself allowing myself time to think through decisions, and to think about the potential consequences of anger explosions, and the effect it would have on others. As a result, I calmed down a lot, find out more about myself and learned not to hide behind things like games or excuses to hide away from the world.

Skip forward a few years, and after mellowing out a lot and having less explosions, we were bought a Wii ‘Mario Kart’ pack for Christmas. And queue the strike of fear into my family’s hearts.

However, as a matter of trust and respect, we kept the console and played the games like we should. The first moment something happened — ironically enough, being twatted with a blue shell six feet from the finishing line, ample reason to scream out loud — I didn’t react. I didn’t throw anything. I didn’t scream and turn Super Saiyan. I shrugged and got on with it. Shit happens.

Although greeted with much trepidation for a while, expecting an outburst at any moment, my future wife realised that the help that I had sought had worked. Sure, I still had moments. I still have moments — who doesn’t? — but none that were game related. She could now stand to sit in the same room as me while playing games, could bear to talk to me while playing… could bear to live with me, even.

Simply put, I realised there were more important things than getting angry at a game, or at other people through games. I realised that there’s a world out there already full of anger, and who am I to wreck a family’s life for the sake of being angry at the sake of a few games?

Games are still important in my life and they always will be. Games have showed me many worlds and stories that I simply would not have experienced had I not played them. They gave me a hobby when everyone else and everything else denied me the happiness I sought.

I still use them as an escape, but I use them now as a fun escape. I use them as a break from designing, or to relax and chill and to find new worlds. I can now play them with my family, regularly getting my arse kicked by my wife and kids, and having fun along the way. When I die in a game repeatedly, or come across a cheating bastard in an online game, I switch it off. I shut it down and go back to it later.

I no longer use games to hide away from life’s barriers or an escape to pretend that things around me weren’t happening. I no longer think that games are the only way in life.

I’m largely writing this as a reaction to the many skeptics and media outlets who think that video games on their own are a bad influence.

At least weekly it seems, video games are blamed for all manner of violence across the Western world, from the shootings in the Washington Naval Yard, to the Sandy Hook shootings in 2012 and linked to the Norwegian terrorist, Anders Breivik.

Like music and movies before them, video games are an easy target to blame for massacres. Whether this is down to people’s interpretations that gaming is anti-social, or that it stirs feeling up in people that would otherwise stay suppressed, I don’t know.

What I do know, is that video games can provide a very real catalyst for an already existing condition.Whether that be a mental issue, or an anger problem, games can exacerbate an underlying problem, however, so can films, music and other mediums where people with an issue can fall into that trap. Films like The Matrix and Scream have been blamed for murders where the murderers have been obsessed with the films and brought the film’s story and setting into real life. In music, metal bands such as Slipknot, Metallica, Marilyn Manson and Rammstein have often been the target of the media for influencing murderers into committing their crimes.

While movies, music and games can be catalyst to a problem, I believe that it would only be a matter of time before that very same person started showing traits of this behaviour in other areas, letting the anger in their life build up to breaking point. These mediums only serve to allow the release of emotion and anger at an earlier point than would normally would. I think, to an unstable person, playing games all day or watching a movie repeatedly, serves to act as an ongoing catalyst equal to, say, instances where people have “saw red” when they’ve found out their partner has been cheating on them.

What the media often fails to think of in their haste to find a scapegoat is that these people, murderers and psychopaths are clearly already under some kind of derangement and some suffering from mental issues apparent even before video games were on the scene. As mentioned at the start of this, video games are everywhere in today’s times, so they are an easy target for the media and politicians to jump on. Before that, movies were more prominent. Before that, music. Before that, comic books.

The fault and the blame lies alone with the perpetrator himself. He alone is to blame for committing actions that lead to the loss of lives, regardless of what has happened previously in his life that has led to it. Sure, being abused, feeling angry at the world, left alone to be become socially inadequate are all very real reasons why people have issues, but that person alone is to blame for the refusal to believe that real life exists outside of his chosen medium. Taking to heart the lyrics of Marilyn Manson, choosing to believe that The Matrix is real or believing that Call of Duty is a training sim for real life shootings is the fault of the person who believes this, not the medium.

The (civilised) media cries foul when people take the Bible, Qur’an or Tanakh seriously and commit crimes based off passages of the these books, but the very same media will jump at the chance to blame a certain media for the very same thing.

In finishing, I will admit that video games can be a bad influence on people, but only on those people who already have physical, mental, social or emotional issues, otherwise even the mildest of people who play games would be turning Hulk at the slightest hint of trouble.

Video games, like films and music, can be a trigger to an already underlining, inherent problem that serve to feed off the sufferer’s feeling of ineptitude. Much how alcoholics explain their addiction by finding solace in bottom of a vodka bottle, gamers find their comfort in the shape of a controller and TV screen, not realising that the deeper and longer they play games that feed off their problems, the worse they are making it for themselves.

When played for fun, for entertainment, for pleasure, video games can provide hours of entertainment for children and adults alike. It’s about time that the media, politicians and scaremongering folk started to realise that video games are here to stay, despite their ‘warnings’, and that the few do not equal the majority.

Video games are faster and more immersive than ever, which makes it easy to fantasize about the life of a pro gamer. So, how do esports players—and by extension esports teams—maintain a daily regimen that supports them to keep playing the games at which they excel? To answer these questions, we spoke to pro players of Overwatch*, Counter-Strike*: Global Offensive* (CS:GO), and League of Legends*.

Two pro gamers interviewed for this story—Lynnie “artStar” Noquez of Counter-Strike*: Global Offensive organization Team Dignitas* and League of Legends* team Clutch Gaming Academy’s* Cody Sun—both describe a daily regimen of about six to eight hours of structured team practice, which is always complemented by several more hours of self-directed practice. Noquez summed up a typical daily schedule:

I wake up around 11:00 AM and reply to all my work emails. Then I get ready around 12-1 PM, cook lunch with my fiancé, or sometimes go out to eat with his family. My afternoons are spent doing whatever I need to get done that day, whether it’s running errands, cleaning the house, prepping dinner, or if I’m lucky and did all that a different day, I usually spend time with family and friends. I do all of this until around 5:00 PM, and that’s when I start individual Counter-Strike* practice. I’ll watch a demo, review my nades, play some pugs or stream on Twitch*. Around 7:00 PM team practice with Dignitas* begins. We take a short break in the middle of practice for a dinner then end practice around 11:00 PM. Right after practice, I usually head straight to bed and repeat the next day for 5 days a week!

While other players might have team practice during the day instead of the evening, their routines were otherwise similar—finding large blocks of time to get as much gameplay time in as possible, then fitting in errands and other life events when they can.

Practice, Practice, Practice

What does all this practice time actually look like? Though esports pros’ training regimens might differ as much as their preferences in peripherals, there are some common practices shared between them.

For a well-established esport title like League of Legends*, practice time is essentially playing the same game that regular gamers play, over and over (and over) again.

While League of Legends* developer Riot Games* added an oft-requested practice mode to the game in 2017, Clutch Gaming Academy’s* Cody Sun says that top-tier players already have to be so good at all of the game’s different nitty-gritty mechanics like last-hitting (killing enemy minions at the right moment to maximize gold and XP intake) or flashing (teleporting short distances) that they don’t really run drills. Instead, they constantly scrimmage, or “scrim,” usually against each other or the other professional teams—the same ones they compete against in tournaments throughout each season. These games are all recorded and studiously pored over by the players, managers and coaches, looking for any areas of improvement or instances where team synergy is lagging.

When practicing alone, meanwhile, they just log onto the game’s ranked mode like everyone else. Cody Sun fondly recalls the first few times he was recognized by high-ranked amateur players he was matched with and against, noting that it reminded him of when he was beginning to climb the game’s ranks, and how thrilled he felt when he’d be matched with pro players he looked up to, like Shan “Chaox” Huang.

“I always try to be nice,” Cody Sun says of the times when he’s practicing ranked play solo and his teammates recognize him. “Because I’ve been in that same exact situation.”

Stay Active in the Real World

Esports players often stress the importance of physical exercise as part of their health regimen. For some, like Overwatch League’s* Eli “Elk” Gallagher, a fitness routine was something they’d only discovered in order to complement their training behind the keyboard.

“I had never been to a gym prior to joining this team,” Gallagher says. “I did some physical activities in high school, but nothing super specific. When I joined [the Philadelphia Fusion*], I talked to Tucker [Roberts], who is the owner, and was like, ‘I want a personal trainer for the team. Even if it’s only me using it, I want a gym and a personal trainer. I think that will be really beneficial for me as a player.’”

They’re still in the process of getting that set up, but Elk says that “using online advice,” he has already begun to take advantage of the gym they have at the team house. “Fusion* supplied us with a cable machine, lots of dumbbells, a bench press, deadlifts … a lot of really basic equipment, which has been nice.”

Stretching is also hugely important as a means to avoid wrist, neck, and shoulder injuries that are so often the result of prolonged sessions sitting at the computer.

“In order to avoid any issues with wrist, shoulder, or back pain, I like to take precautions by practicing some simple stretches we learned at the 76ers* Training Complex with the team’s sports science staff,” Noquez says. “These stretches are great because you don’t need any special equipment and you don’t need a lot of space. I can do these stretches right at my desk, in-between scrims, or even in-between rounds if I needed to.”

Always on the lookout for ways to improve and learn from his peers and pro gaming predecessors, Clutch Gaming Academy’s* Cody Sun said that he’s taken lots of tips—including how to exercise—from reading and watching interviews with other esports stars.

“A lot of other pro players will also talk about it,” he says of wellness regimens. “They’ll mention their schedules and what they do, so sometimes I’ll look at interviews or whatever and then like, ‘Oh!’ Like exercising in the morning, that sounds pretty good, because it just helps you with your mindset and practice.”

Get Plenty of Rest and Relaxation

Cody Sun strives to maintain a proper sleep schedule, social life, and healthy mindset, rather than grinding out as many games as possible every single day.

“I do think that the most, or the best players in our industry are the ones that are able to find the best schedule for themselves, and, you know, be as efficient as they can with their lifestyle—practicing as well as exercising and eating well and having a decent social life as well,” he says.

Sun believes that the culture of esports has improved significantly—even just over the past two or three years—by embracing a more holistic approach to practicing and gaming. “It’s really hard for us to only have six hours of sleep and practice constantly. I feel like our current approach, or at least the direction of our approach, is making sure we have a healthy lifestyle, and healthy mindset, and then just be really efficient with the practice.”

The “never stop grinding” outlook is certainly still prevalent among some in competitive gaming, Sun admits, but he insists that those who take a more holistic approach to the life of a pro gamer are being just as rigorous—if not more so—than their peers who keep readying up in soloq deep into the early hours of the morning.

“Maintaining a good sleep schedule actually requires more discipline, more focus than just playing as much as you can,” Sun tells us. “You would think, ‘Oh, this guy is working harder because he practices until 3 a.m. while this other guy finished at 12 or 11:30 even.’ But the person who’s maintaining the better schedule has better discipline, and that translates into other areas in their life as well as gameplay.”

Sometimes this means stepping away from the keyboard—even if that’s just to watch someone else play League of Legends*, in Cody Sun’s case. “You’re still learning stuff because you’re watching other people play, but it’s a lot less stressful,” he says.

CS:GO’s Noquez needs to unplug from the shooter as much as possible at the end of the day, meanwhile.

“After a long day of practice and because we end pretty late, I’m usually too tired to do anything,” she says. “So my favorite thing to do is simple: just cuddle up on the couch with my fiancé and our pup and watch some movies!”

Gallagher, for his part, wistfully recalls spending the entire day outside during his most recent off day from training.

“Yesterday was an off-day, and I literally just sat outside on my phone just talking to people for about eight hours. From 1:00 PM to about 9:00 PM I was just outside, ordered food, stayed outside. It was nice out, I didn’t really want to be inside playing games,” he says.

It turns out that the life of a pro gamer isn’t always as lax and easygoing as one might think. “I think relaxing in esports is one of the harder things because our jobs are also our hobbies, so it can sometimes be really hard to separate work and social life from other more relaxing activities that people would normally do,” Galagher says. Can you please disconnect this game from Messenger. I have purchased spins a few times and when I use my spins there was many times times that it would freeze during an attack or raid. Game of Life с битовой магией, многопоточностью и на GPU

Недавняя статья на Хабре в очередной раз показала неостывающий интерес к игре «Жизнь» в частности и всевозможным оптимизациям в общем. Статья и комментарии к ней, особенно любопытство к вычислениям на GPU, вдохновили меня на то, чтобы поделиться своими изысканиями на данном поприще и, забегая вперёд, скажу, что повествование пойдёт о расчётах на GPU, битовой магии, многопоточности и огромных полях для игры «Жизнь», порядка миллиарда клеток.

О себе

Пару слов о себе и проекте. Вот уже несколько лет моим хобби и pet-проектом является написание игры «Жизнь», в ходе которого я разбираюсь в интересующих меня темах. Так, сперва я сделал её с помощью библиотеки glut и прикрутил многопользовательский режим, будучи вдохновлённым архитектурой peer-to-peer. А около двух лет назад решил начать всё с нуля, используя Qt и вычисления на GPU.

Масштабы

Идея нового проекта заключалась в том, чтобы сделать кроссплатформенное приложение, в первую очередь для мобильных устройств, в котором пользователи смогут окунуться в игру «Жизнь», познакомиться с разнообразием всевозможных паттернов, наблюдать за причудливыми формами и комбинациями этой игры, выбрав скорость от 1 до 100 мс на шаг и задав размер игрового поля вплоть до 32’768 x 32’768, то есть 1’073’741’824 клетки.

На всякий случай напомню об игре «Жизнь». Игра происходит на плоскости, поделённой на множество клеток. Клетки квадратные, соответственно, для каждой клетки есть 8 соседей. Каждая клетка может быть либо живой, либо мёртвой, то есть пустой. В рамках игры пользователь заполняет клетки жизнью, выставляя на поле заинтересовавшие его комбинации клеток — паттерны.

Далее процесс шаг за шагом развивается по заданным правилам:

В моей реализации поле зациклено, то есть после 32’767-й клетки вновь следует 0-я. Таким образом, перемещающиеся паттерны способны обогнуть поле и оказаться в точке, где они были размещены изначально. Забавный эффект случается с паттерном «планёрное ружьё», когда выпущенные им планёры в конечном итоге врезаются в само ружьё и разрушают его, этакое самоубийство в мире клеточных автоматов:

Архитектура

Что касается реализации, то в первую очередь хочется отметить, что каждая клетка в игровом поле представляет собой всего лишь 1 бит в памяти. Так, при выборе размера игрового поля в памяти выделяется буфер размером n^2 / 8 байт. Это улучшает локальность данных и снижает объём потребляемой памяти, а главное позволяет применить ещё более хитроумные оптимизации, о которых поговорим ниже. Игровое поле всегда квадратное и его сторона всегда степени 2, в частности затем, чтобы без остатка осуществлять деление на 8.

Архитектурно выделяются два слоя, ответственные за вычисления:

Низкий уровень

Задача низкого уровня заключается непосредственно в расчёте состояния игрового поля и устроена следующим образом. В памяти хранятся два буфера n^2 / 8 байт. Первый буфер служит как input — текущее состояние игрового поля. Второй буфер — как output, в который записывается новое состояние игрового поля в процессе расчётов. По завершении вычислений достаточно сделать swap буферов и следующий шаг игры готов. Такая архитектура позволяет распараллелить расчёты в силу константности input. Дело в том, что каждый поток может независимо обрабатывать клетки игрового поля.

За счёт многопоточности GPU-подход добивается максимальной эффективности. На CPU также происходит распараллеливание, но, соответственно, с гораздо меньшим числом потоков и меньшей эффективностью, что отражено в секции бенчмарков ниже. Сам алгоритм идентичен для всех реализаций и заключается в следующем.

Назовём атомарной операцией расчёт одного байта буфера, хранящего игровое поле, то есть расчёт восьми клеток. Этот расчёт совершается одним потоком и требует информации о соседних восьми байтах. Попробуем схематично изобразить один байт следующим образом, где точка — это бит:

А участок игрового поля с интересующим нас байтом и его восемью соседними байтами изобразим так:

Исходя из рисунка, можно догадаться, что все соседние клетки можно уложить в один uint64_t (назовём его neighbours), а ещё в одном uint8_t (назовём его self), будет храниться информация о соседях в самом обрабатываемом байте.

Рассмотрим на примере расчёт 0-го бита целевого байта. Звёздочкой отметим интересующий бит, а нулём соседние для него биты:

Пример посложнее. Здесь звёздочкой отмечены 0-й, 3-й и 7-й биты целевого байта и соответствующими числами соседние биты:

Думаю, кто-то из читателей уже догадался, в чём заключается магия. Имея указанную информацию, остаётся лишь составить битовые маски для каждого бита целевого байта и применить их к neighbours и self соответственно. Результатом станут 2 значения, сумма единичных бит которых будет характеризовать число соседей, что можно интерпретировать как правила игры «Жизнь»: 2 или 3 бита для поддержания жизни в живой клетке и 3 бита для зарождения новой жизни в пустой клетке. В противном случае клетка остаётся/становится пустой.

Описанные вычисления на нижнем уровне происходят каждый шаг игры, и поле всегда обрабатывается целиком вне зависимости от его заполненности и без трюков с мемоизацией а-ля Hashlife.

После заполнения всего выходного буфера игровое поле считается рассчитанным.

Высокий уровень

После получения сигнала с нижнего уровня о том, что расчёт окончен, на высоком уровне происходит копирование всего буфера с целью обеспечения потокобезопасного чтения данных для отрисовки и возможного сохранения состояния игры при выходе.

Отрисовка клеток выполняется средствами Qt, а именно посредством заполнения пикселей в QImage. Интерфейс выполнен в QML. Пиксели заполняются лишь для небольшой области видимого игроку игрового поля. Таким образом удаётся избежать лишних затрат ресурсов на отрисовку.

Процесс вычисления как на нижнем, так и на верхнем уровне происходит в разных потоках. На верхнем уровне обрабатывается ввод новых клеток, составляющих паттерн, который выбрал пользователь. Интересно, что это единственная логика, которая использует мьютекс. Для всех других операций синхронизации как на верхнем, так и на нижнем уровне и между ними используются атомарные переменные.

Бенчмарки

Результаты замеров скорости работы игры для разных машин в зависимости от размеров игрового поля приведены в таблицах. Полученные значения в таблицах указаны в миллисекундах. При проведении тестов игровое поле заполнялось жизнью на 50% с помощью генератора случайных чисел.

В таблицах есть замеры скорости работы нижнего и верхнего уровня, причём берутся минимальные значения. А для более общей картины приведены замеры скорости вычисления 100 шагов игры и среднего времени выполнения шага. Последнее более показательно, так как включает в себя время на отрисовку и прочие сопутствующие операции.

Видно, что на стареньком макбуке процессор совсем не справляется с огромным игровым полем и приложение становится неюзабельным. Даже процессор нового макбука едва вытягивает такой объём вычислений. Зато видеокарта значительно превосходит по производительности процессор как на старом, так и на новом железе. С использованием GPU новый макбук предлагает вполне комфортный пользовательский опыт даже на огромных игровых пространствах.

На текущий момент игра находится в стадии разработки интерфейсов и в первую очередь затачивается под мобильные интерфейсы, а потому на компьютерах управление хромает.

В отличие от оригинальной статьи я не ставил целью провести бенчмарк различных оптимизаций, поэтому сравнивать две статьи один к одному нельзя, зато материал отлично раскрывает тему сравнения потенциала GPU и CPU со значительным превосходством первого.

В будущем хочется провести бенчмарки на мобильных устройствах. Проект находится на ранней стадии разработки, а потому Apple-Developer аккаунта для проведения таких тестов сейчас у меня нет.

The Daily Regimen of Players in Professional Gaming

Life of an Esports Pro

The life of a pro gamer is filled with rigorous training and demanding tournament schedules. Over time, this can result in problems like burnout unless players are diligent in staying healthy.

The life of a pro gamer is filled with rigorous training and demanding tournament schedules. Over time, this can result in problems like burnout unless players are diligent in staying healthy.

Video games are faster and more immersive than ever, which makes it easy to fantasize about the life of a pro gamer. So, how do esports players—and by extension esports teams—maintain a daily regimen that supports them to keep playing the games at which they excel? To answer these questions, we spoke to pro players of Overwatch*, Counter-Strike*: Global Offensive* (CS:GO), and League of Legends*.

Two pro gamers interviewed for this story—Lynnie “artStar” Noquez of Counter-Strike*: Global Offensive organization Team Dignitas* and League of Legends* team Clutch Gaming Academy’s* Cody Sun—both describe a daily regimen of about six to eight hours of structured team practice, which is always complemented by several more hours of self-directed practice. Noquez summed up a typical daily schedule:

I wake up around 11:00 AM and reply to all my work emails. Then I get ready around 12-1 PM, cook lunch with my fiancé, or sometimes go out to eat with his family. My afternoons are spent doing whatever I need to get done that day, whether it’s running errands, cleaning the house, prepping dinner, or if I’m lucky and did all that a different day, I usually spend time with family and friends. I do all of this until around 5:00 PM, and that’s when I start individual Counter-Strike* practice. I’ll watch a demo, review my nades, play some pugs or stream on Twitch*. Around 7:00 PM team practice with Dignitas* begins. We take a short break in the middle of practice for a dinner then end practice around 11:00 PM. Right after practice, I usually head straight to bed and repeat the next day for 5 days a week!

While other players might have team practice during the day instead of the evening, their routines were otherwise similar—finding large blocks of time to get as much gameplay time in as possible, then fitting in errands and other life events when they can.

Practice, Practice, Practice

What does all this practice time actually look like? Though esports pros’ training regimens might differ as much as their preferences in peripherals, there are some common practices shared between them.

For a well-established esport title like League of Legends*, practice time is essentially playing the same game that regular gamers play, over and over (and over) again.

While League of Legends* developer Riot Games* added an oft-requested practice mode to the game in 2017, Clutch Gaming Academy’s* Cody Sun says that top-tier players already have to be so good at all of the game’s different nitty-gritty mechanics like last-hitting (killing enemy minions at the right moment to maximize gold and XP intake) or flashing (teleporting short distances) that they don’t really run drills. Instead, they constantly scrimmage, or “scrim,” usually against each other or the other professional teams—the same ones they compete against in tournaments throughout each season. These games are all recorded and studiously pored over by the players, managers and coaches, looking for any areas of improvement or instances where team synergy is lagging.

When practicing alone, meanwhile, they just log onto the game’s ranked mode like everyone else. Cody Sun fondly recalls the first few times he was recognized by high-ranked amateur players he was matched with and against, noting that it reminded him of when he was beginning to climb the game’s ranks, and how thrilled he felt when he’d be matched with pro players he looked up to, like Shan “Chaox” Huang.

“I always try to be nice,” Cody Sun says of the times when he’s practicing ranked play solo and his teammates recognize him. “Because I’ve been in that same exact situation.”

Stay Active in the Real World

Esports players often stress the importance of physical exercise as part of their health regimen. For some, like Overwatch League’s* Eli “Elk” Gallagher, a fitness routine was something they’d only discovered in order to complement their training behind the keyboard.

“I had never been to a gym prior to joining this team,” Gallagher says. “I did some physical activities in high school, but nothing super specific. When I joined [the Philadelphia Fusion*], I talked to Tucker [Roberts], who is the owner, and was like, ‘I want a personal trainer for the team. Even if it’s only me using it, I want a gym and a personal trainer. I think that will be really beneficial for me as a player.’”

They’re still in the process of getting that set up, but Elk says that “using online advice,” he has already begun to take advantage of the gym they have at the team house. “Fusion* supplied us with a cable machine, lots of dumbbells, a bench press, deadlifts … a lot of really basic equipment, which has been nice.”

Stretching is also hugely important as a means to avoid wrist, neck, and shoulder injuries that are so often the result of prolonged sessions sitting at the computer.

“In order to avoid any issues with wrist, shoulder, or back pain, I like to take precautions by practicing some simple stretches we learned at the 76ers* Training Complex with the team’s sports science staff,” Noquez says. “These stretches are great because you don’t need any special equipment and you don’t need a lot of space. I can do these stretches right at my desk, in-between scrims, or even in-between rounds if I needed to.”

Always on the lookout for ways to improve and learn from his peers and pro gaming predecessors, Clutch Gaming Academy’s* Cody Sun said that he’s taken lots of tips—including how to exercise—from reading and watching interviews with other esports stars.

“A lot of other pro players will also talk about it,” he says of wellness regimens. “They’ll mention their schedules and what they do, so sometimes I’ll look at interviews or whatever and then like, ‘Oh!’ Like exercising in the morning, that sounds pretty good, because it just helps you with your mindset and practice.”

Get Plenty of Rest and Relaxation

Cody Sun strives to maintain a proper sleep schedule, social life, and healthy mindset, rather than grinding out as many games as possible every single day.

“I do think that the most, or the best players in our industry are the ones that are able to find the best schedule for themselves, and, you know, be as efficient as they can with their lifestyle—practicing as well as exercising and eating well and having a decent social life as well,” he says.

Sun believes that the culture of esports has improved significantly—even just over the past two or three years—by embracing a more holistic approach to practicing and gaming. “It’s really hard for us to only have six hours of sleep and practice constantly. I feel like our current approach, or at least the direction of our approach, is making sure we have a healthy lifestyle, and healthy mindset, and then just be really efficient with the practice.”

The “never stop grinding” outlook is certainly still prevalent among some in competitive gaming, Sun admits, but he insists that those who take a more holistic approach to the life of a pro gamer are being just as rigorous—if not more so—than their peers who keep readying up in soloq deep into the early hours of the morning.

“Maintaining a good sleep schedule actually requires more discipline, more focus than just playing as much as you can,” Sun tells us. “You would think, ‘Oh, this guy is working harder because he practices until 3 a.m. while this other guy finished at 12 or 11:30 even.’ But the person who’s maintaining the better schedule has better discipline, and that translates into other areas in their life as well as gameplay.”

Sometimes this means stepping away from the keyboard—even if that’s just to watch someone else play League of Legends*, in Cody Sun’s case. “You’re still learning stuff because you’re watching other people play, but it’s a lot less stressful,” he says.

CS:GO’s Noquez needs to unplug from the shooter as much as possible at the end of the day, meanwhile.

“After a long day of practice and because we end pretty late, I’m usually too tired to do anything,” she says. “So my favorite thing to do is simple: just cuddle up on the couch with my fiancé and our pup and watch some movies!”

Gallagher, for his part, wistfully recalls spending the entire day outside during his most recent off day from training.

“Yesterday was an off-day, and I literally just sat outside on my phone just talking to people for about eight hours. From 1:00 PM to about 9:00 PM I was just outside, ordered food, stayed outside. It was nice out, I didn’t really want to be inside playing games,” he says.

It turns out that the life of a pro gamer isn’t always as lax and easygoing as one might think. “I think relaxing in esports is one of the harder things because our jobs are also our hobbies, so it can sometimes be really hard to separate work and social life from other more relaxing activities that people would normally do,” Galagher says. Lifestyle Gamification: How to Convert your Life into a Game

This is the origin of the my Lifestyle Gamification concept (known as the FD Lifestyle back then – living real life like a hardcore gamer). This is the core philosophy that set me on the course of entrepreneurship, of being a speaker, a social activist, a career coach, a gamification expert and many more, and I want to share this to urge you in joining me in the passionate path of leveling up and completing cool quests that make a difference in this world.

Being a hardcore gamer is fun and makes you feel accomplished…temporarily

It all began in 2003. I was a hardcore Diablo II player back then, and I would spend a significant amount of time figuring out how would I build my character, assign the right skill points, assemble a team, and conquer difficult quests. I was quite good at the game and I helped a lot of my friends plan out their character skill charts and level up according to it.

Then came the time when my friends started quitting and moved on to another game. I quit too. During this time, I was in that transition phase between quitting a game and moving on to the next one, and I suddenly felt extremely empty.

I realized that I had I spent thousands upon thousands of hours getting more experience, leveling up, accumulating more gold, collecting better gear. And now I have nothing. My account will be deleted after 3 months of inactivity. It seemed like a big part of my life simply disappeared. What now?

Lifestyle Gamification: Pursuing a game that will last and be meaningful

So I started to think, what kind of game can I play that tons of people are playing, and they can’t just quit when the next big thing comes out? The conclusion I reached was: it’s pretty much the game of life.

So, if I were my own RPG character, I wouldn’t stay in town all day, be idle, and walk back and forth, back and forth. NO!! I would go out and kill monsters, get more experience, level up, and conquer cool quests of course.

I then realized that everyone is playing this game, but not everyone realizes it, especially when they are in high school or college. I figured that, if people are still in town just being idle, (watching TV, partying, not doing much with life) I can gain an edge by being out there getting more experience, meeting high level characters, assigning important skill points, and leveling up. Then one day they will realize (out of college) that they are playing this game too, and they will need experience to level up and overcome whatever quest they feel they should conquer with their lives. By then, I would be at level 20 or so with a strong head start.

Ultimately, my goal is to be the strongest player on my server.

Helping people level up and ally with them is the best way to conquer complex quests in this real world

In most MMORPGs, high level players can help lower level players level up faster. That’s what I have committed my life to do too: get people to realize they are playing this game and help them level up as fast as possible, so that we can help each other out in life(in Lifestyle Gamification, I call this Vertical Networking).

So I want to be the strongest in my field, and team up with all the strongest in other fields. Together we can complete cool quests to solve problems that the real world faces. In a game, the quest could be killing a monster or building a large empire. In the real world, a quest could be solving global warming, making a better search engine, or running a successful non-profit. The beautiful thing about this particular game is, when you play it, it can be just as thrilling, and it actually makes a difference in this world. You would have made a positive impact in peoples’ lives, and you would be wealthy and reputable if you play it well. Sounds like a good deal.

What money can’t get you, the Lifestyle Gamification can

In Lifestyle Gamification, we also call people who just want stability and comfortable lives NPCs. NPCs become the environment instead of living passionately. They live everyday to support their existence and buy cool stuff on the side. They slave for 5 days a week so they can do what they want on the weekends. If you think about it, this doesn’t make sense.

Why do you make money? You make money to increase the quality of life. But you spend so many hours in your life working anyway, that IS your quality of life. It makes little sense for people to pay a lot of money for you to be miserable your entire life. It makes a lot more sense to get paid a bit less, but have your whole life do what you are passionate about and play throughout.

So this is what I do. I work over 90 hours a week. I also play over 90 hours a week. People I have Lifestyle Gamified also spend a ridiculous amount of time trying to become a stronger player while accomplishing amazing things for their age. Because I feel like I have a better life than most people without necessarily being better in person, I want to bring the philosophy of combining work and play to people, whether through myself, my company culture, or the services/products that it provides.

I want people to have fun while working by doing what they are passionate about. I want those who are extreme in what they do (like hardcore gamers) to be extreme in what truly matters in this world.
