After a year of lockdowns, restrictions and fighting over toilet rolls, we’re desperate to start going to gigs again. We miss the buzz, the camaraderie. hell, we even miss being showered by a musty pint of urine. It might be a little while before things get properly back to normal, though, so in the meantime we’ll have to make do with listening to our favourite bands in the comfort of our own cesspit.

Speaking of budget headphones, in this review we’re going to focus on the Anker Soundcore Life Q20 (opens in new tab) ($60/£52), which place top in the aforementioned buyer’s guide. The Q20s are wireless over-ear cans that come with active noise cancelling and support for hi-res audio.

Anker describes itself as “the global leader in charging technology” and a quick look at the Chinese firm’s website reveals that its “other products” – including headphones, in-ears and Bluetooth speakers – are featured almost as an after-thought. So, can these cans ably recreate the festival experience at home, or should you save your money (and your ears) and look elsewhere?

Anker Soundcore Life Q20 headphones review: Design

In this job, we’ve been lucky enough to try out some of the most luxurious headphones around, so we’ve probably become a bit snobby in our old age. When we first clapped eyes on the Anker Soundcore Life Q20s, it was a bit of a ‘meh’ moment. There’s no premium sheepskin leather or sculpted aluminium here – instead, these monochrome (black, blue or silver) cans combine a plasticky-looking adjustable headband with a pair of faux leather ear pads. They didn’t exactly make us run off and wretch into a bin, but they’re unlikely to turn many heads on the train either.

Placing them on our ears, though, we were pleasantly surprised by how comfortable they were. The Soundcore Life Q20s feature swivel joints that enable the headphones to adjust to the shape of your head, while the memory foam ear pads are sympathetic to your lugholes. Often when we wear headphones, we start to suffer from fatigue after about half an hour, but these didn’t give us any grief in the initial 90 minutes we were wearing them. It helped that the inside of each ear pad is fitted with a breathable mesh that stops your ears from sweating during longer listening sessions.

Each of the ear cups features controls for the headphones. The left cup is where you’ll find the buttons for powering up and pairing the cans with your phone, as well as the button for switching the active noise cancelling on or off. On the right, you have your media playback controls, which are also used to take calls, engage the BassUp function (more about that in a moment) and speak to Siri or Google Assistant, along with a 3.5mm jack for wired listening and a micro-USB socket for charging the battery.

When you’ve finished with the headphones, you can easily stow them away, thanks to the foldable design and included pouch. The lack of a hard case would seriously irritate us if these were a 300-dollar set of cans, but seeing as they’re cheap as chips, we’ll cope.

Anker Soundcore Life Q20 headphones review: Features

We may not have been blown away by the look of these headphones, but they boast an impressive set of features for the price. The Anker Soundcore Life Q20s contain four high-sensitivity active noise cancelling microphones that, according to Anker, reduce up to 90% of external din. We’re usually suspicious when we see claims of ANC in a budget pair of headphones, but it works quite well here, with low-frequency rumbles such as the tumble dryer and housemates’ farts becoming non-existent. Chatter and bursts of laughter remained audible, but that might not be such a bad thing if you need to listen out for important information (i.e. if you’re at the airport).

Alongside the ANC, there are a range of other features designed to enhance your listening experience. With their custom 40mm dynamic drivers and ability to cover frequencies up to 40Hz, the Soundcore Life Q20s are built to handle hi-res audio. Anker has also included its exclusive BassUp technology, which – if you select it – analyses the profile of your music in real time and then automatically increases the low-end frequencies by up to 43%. As for their wireless capabilities, Anker’s cans pair with your device via Bluetooth 5. In our test, we found that they maintained an uninterrupted signal for around 15 metres, which should cover pretty much every area of your home.

With Anker being an expert in charging, it was inevitable that these cans would offer excellent battery life. The Soundcore Life Q20s will give you around 30 hours of wireless listening in active noise cancelling mode, and a whopping 60 hours in standard mode. That should comfortably see you through the Rolling Stones’ entire back catalogue, or a single Dream Theater track (we jest, of course). And with five minutes of charging getting you an amazing four hours of listening, you should never be without your favourite music.

To put these cans through their paces, we called upon Alice Cooper’s exultant rock thumper, Elected. In the mid-range, the Anker Soundcore Life Q20s sounded great, Cooper’s rebel yell colliding with Michael Bruce’s power chords to thrilling effect.

Anker Soundcore Life Q20 headphones review: The competition

If wireless listening isn’t important to you, then check out the active noise cancelling Lindy NC-60 (opens in new tab) headphones ($78/£55). While the ANC obviously isn’t best in class, it’s perfectly adequate, and these comfy, closed-back cans will also give you 72 hours of listening off a couple of AAA batteries.

Alternatively, if you want to hear your music untethered, the Cambridge Audio Melomania 1 Plus (opens in new tab) (£120/$140) true wireless in-ear headphones are an outstanding budget choice, combining fantastic sound and nine-hour battery life.

Обзор наушников Anker SoundCore Life Q20 Bluetooth: удобный и недорогой с удивительно насыщенным звуком

У этой модели мы видим совершенно новый дизайн и ряд улучшенных функций относительно предшествующей Life 2 и Life Q20. Как они звучат? Удобно ли носить? Стоит ли покупать? На эти и другие вопросы я постаралась найти ответы.

Характеристики ANKER Soundcore Life Q30 (Life Tune)

Дизайн и комплектация

Вышло приложение ещё в 2018 году, и с тех пор постоянно улучшается. Вместо того чтобы выпускать новое ПО для каждой модели, в ANKER оптимизируют уже существующее. Это требует продуманного подхода, но в итоге продукты компании используют уже готовые и проверенные временем функции.

В приложении Soundcore вы найдёте переключение между дополнительными режимами ANC, установку обновлений, эквалайзер и функцию – Естественный шум. Последняя способствует комфортному засыпанию, потому что позволяет активировать разные расслабляющие звуки: дождь, пение птиц, треск костра, гул ветра, шум моря, музыкальную подвеску, стук колёс поезда и ряд других. Для всех звуков можно отрегулировать громкость по вкусу.

Вместе с включённым активным шумоподавлением и этими звуками вы сможете гораздо быстрее уснуть особенно в непривычных условиях – например, самолёте.

Удобство использования

В плане комфорта прослушивания, наушники Soundcore Life Q30 превосходят Life Q20 – они не давят на уши или голову, что особенно важно, если вы носите очки.

С другой стороны, эти наушники могут упасть при интенсивных движениях головой, поэтому для занятий спортом Soundcore Life Tune подходят не лучшим образом. Для подобных целей лучше взглянуть внутриканальные спортивные модели, как Soundcore Spirit Dot 2 или Amazfit Powerbuds.

Качество звука

Как многие беспроводные наушники закрытого типа, ANKER Soundcore Life Q30 (Life Tune) оснащены 40-мм динамическими преобразователями.

Лучше всего этой модели ANKER удаются нижние частоты – басы здесь мощные, когда саб-басы даже создают приятный бум-эффект. Некоторым звук может показаться чересчур низким. Если же выставить громкость на максимум, ваша голова в наушниках буквально начнёт вибрировать. Если такой эффект вам не нужен, в приложении Soundcore для Android и iOS есть эквалайзер с разными пресетами.

При разработке ANKER Soundcore Life Tune компания снова применила технологию гибридного шумоподавления.

Для её работы используются внешние и внутренние микрофоны, анализирующие окружающий шум и того, что слышит пользователь. В результате подавление лишних звуков получается максимально эффективным.

Имеется и режим Прозрачности, при котором вы сможете слышать происходящее вокруг. Он повышает безопасность при переходе через дорогу, позволяя участвовать в разговоре с коллегами. Нажатием клавиши на корпусе можно быстро включить или выключить ANC, либо перейти в режим Прозрачности, хотя в приложении Soundcore имеется больше опций.

На выбор предлагается три вида ANC: Дорога, Дом и Улица, каждый из которых лучше всего подходит для соответствующей ситуации:

Честно говоря, при реальном использовании особой разницы между этими режимами я не ощутила. Однако, хорошо, что Soundcore их предусмотрела и добавила, а качество работе можно будет улучшить через обновления.

Важно и то, что ANC в Soundcore Life Q30 не влияет на качество звука, этого удаётся достичь далеко не всем бюджетным наушникам. Если сравнить Life Q30 (Life Tune) с конкурентами по ценовому сегменту, активное шумоподавление здесь реализовано на более высоком уровне.

Автономность ANKER Soundcore Life Tune

Когда дело касается времени автономной работы, у Soundcore Life Tune есть преимущество над конкурентами, благодаря опыту родительской компании ANKER.

Китайский производитель известен качественными зарядными устройствами и аккумуляторами, поэтому проблем в этом плане у этой модели нет. На практике беспроводные наушники Life Q30 способны работать до 40 часов с одного заряда (с ANC), что на 10 часов лучше предыдущей модели. С выключенным активным шумоподавлением ANKER Soundcore обещает нам до 60 часов использования.

O cancelamento de ruído ativo não abafa muito bem as vozes, o trabalho fica todo com o cancelamento físico mesmo, mas sons de helicóptero, avião, carros, ar-condicionado etc. o cancelamento ativo abafa muito bem. O som é muito alto, nunca coloco sequer na metade da potência máxima. A bateria dura dias e carrega rápido, é excelente. Coisas de que não gostei: 1. A luz verde do cancelamento de ruído, que quando ativo fica acesa e é muito forte e incômoda no escuro; 2. O tempo para desligar o aparelho. Preciso manter pressionado por muito tempo o botão power para desligá-lo; 3. Ao ativar o assistente virtual, no caso o da Google, o celular emite uma notificação altíssima, mesmo com o volume baixo. Acontece que o volume das notificações sobe assim que o assistente é ativado pelo fone, não sei por quê. De qualquer forma, isso pode ser problema do meu celular ou do assistente do Google e não do produto.

Anker SoundCore Life Q20 Headphones Review

Design

The over-the-ear design of the SoundCore Life Q20 resembles a similar design as the Bose QuietComfort line of headphones, although at a slighter larger size.

The Life Q20 headphones are mostly plastic, but there is a metal sheet in the headband that neither makes the headphones too tight or too loose on my head. The headband also has some extra cushioning so they rest comfortably on the top of my head.

The ear-cups are soft and I’ve found them comfortable when wearing them for extended periods of time. However, like many headphones in this style, there is little “breathability” for your ears and can result in the “ear sweats” over time.

What’s new since the Soundcore Life 2 headphones?

If you’ve been following the Soundcore brand, you may notices the the Life Q20 closely resembles the Life 2. So what’s new?

The Soundcore Life Q20 now uses 4 microphones (compared to 2 microphones on the Life 2) for the Active Noise Cancellation system. On each ear cup, there is now a microphone on both the inside and the outside to help the system “hear” what the listener can hear and what the listener can’t hear to further improve the Active Noise Cancellation system’s effectiveness.

Soundcore Life Q20 and the Soundcore Life 2 look basically the same

Performance

As is typical with Soundcore’s products, the sound quality on the Soundcore Life Q20 headphones is excellent. Bass is strong and mids and highs come through well.

Those who like extra bass can enable the “BassUP” feature by double-pressing the Play button on the right ear cup. However, I found the BassUP feature a little too muddy and overpowers the mids and highs. Even though I like bass, I’m actually happy with the performance when the BassUP feature is off.

One issue I’ve noticed with Active Noise Cancellation enabled is the fluctuation of volume on some songs. It does not seem to occur when Active Noise Cancellation is off, so I’m assuming it is part of the headphone’s system for canceling outside noises. The volume fluctuations are not huge, but I have noticed this on more than one occasion.

Bluetooth range was also impressive, as I was able to walk around my house with my iPhone in a different room and I didn’t notice any blips until I got about 50 feet away indoors.

Compared to the Bose Quiet Comfort 35 II

The Soundcore Life Q20 is a contender against the Bose Quiet Comfort 35 II. When comparing the Bose QC 35 vs the SoundCore Life Q20, keep the following in mind:

The Soundcore Life Q20s last up to 60 hours in “normal” mode and up to 30 hours with the Active Noise Cancellation feature turned on. The Life Q20s can be used with a wired AUX connection while off with no battery charge required. The headphones use a Micro USB port for recharging (sorry, no USB-C).

Video Review

While the Soundcore Life Q20s don’t quite have the sound quality or active noise cancellation capabilities of the Bose QuietComfort 35 II, they are still sound great and provide adequate noise cancellation for travel.

So Anker gets down to business on paper, especially since the headphones can transmit not only via SBC, but also via AAC for improved audio quality. I received a warning during the connection, because there might be compatibility problems with AAC, but in the end everything went smoothly.

I will now first introduce you to the processing and features of the Anker Soundcore Life Q20, before I write something about the sound. Then I’ll briefly discuss wearing comfort and battery life before offering you my personal conclusion.

Anker Soundcore Life Q20: apprence

The buttons for noise reduction and the power button are located on the left auricle. On the right is the volume control and a button to stop or resume playback or to answer calls. Below this are the micro USB charging port and the port for a 3.5 mm jack.

What I personally like are the clearly visible markings for left and right in the ear cups and the flexibility. The ear cups are adjustable in angle, the earhooks in length. The Anker / Soundcore brands have been made relatively discreet by lettering on the sides. For the price everything fits here in my opinion.

Anker Soundcore Life Q20: sound quality

Anker is promoting the Soundcore Life Q20, just like the Bluetooth speaker Soundcore Motion+, which I also tested, with its BassUp feature. As the name suggests, it is designed to boost bass reproduction. Unlike the Motion+, however, there is no dedicated button to turn the function on or off. But you can’t ignore the fact that there’s a lot of bass in the game. At the moment I like to listen to the album «Goodnight Paradise» by Graveyard Club, which is also a good test run for the Anker Soundcore Life A20, because you mix 1980s beats and synths with modern pop and alternative rock.

Of course I also listened to other genres to get an impression. But the bass remains a bit too loud in my ears. That wouldn’t be wild if the official soundcore app already supported the Life Q20. Because via the app you should have the possibility to adjust via equalizer. During my test period the Life Q20 were not officially integrated into the Soundcore app.

Because there is a bug at the moment: When ANC is activated, the microphones pick up the wind noise and transmit it to the ear, like in a hearthrough mode. Of course, this is exactly the opposite of what you actually want to achieve. Other noise is still successfully filtered, but the draught / wind is suddenly audibly loud. I was able to replicate this error again and again even after switching the headphones on and off. So Anker would have to do it again and hopefully can help with a firmware update!

For example, my Jabra Elite Sport, still my favourite jogging model, achieves significantly higher volumes. There are no distortions with the Life Q20 and I also liked the differentiation very much. I listen to a lot of music with noise, which is always a good example of whether you can still hear individual guitar melodies from the Wall of Sound or whether everything merges into a pulp. Here the headphones score exceptionally well with crashing bands like Ringo Deathstarr.

So should Anker get the problem with the ANC under control and introduce the support of the Soundcore app so that you can adjust the sound balance a bit via equalizer, I would be completely thrilled at this price. At the moment, this is unfortunately something like that, especially because of the ANC bug.

Anker Soundcore Life Q20: battery life

I used the Anker Soundcore Life Q20 e.g. for shopping, walking around on the fjord and working in Kiel’s Schrevenpark. The battery life of 30 hours is realistic and depends only a little bit on the volume and of course on whether you use noise cancelling or make regular phone calls. During phone calls, the sound quality on both sides was good in my test, but those who are often on the road in noisy environments have to make a few compromises, of course, as you can’t get close to the crystal-clear quality and suppression of ambient noise of more expensive models. For most users, however, there shouldn’t be any problems.

For example, the Life Q20’s earcups already provide quite good attenuation. I really, really liked the wearing comfort. I was able to leave the earhooks at the smallest setting. Because the shells can be rotated and tilted, the headset fits snugly and should sit comfortably on almost any thick skull. Subjectively for me personally, the Life Q20 is even ahead of some more expensive models.

However, you get a little heat under the headphones, which can be quite noticeable in summer, depending on the length of your hair. I hardly noticed the weight of about 263 grams while wearing it. All in all, the Life Q20 make an excellent impression on me personally and I see ergonomics as perhaps the headset’s greatest strength.

Summary

The Anker Soundcore Life Q20 are affordable over-ear headphones with noise cancelling that offer good sound, excellent wearing comfort, good running time and solid workmanship for approx. 60 Euro. So I would like to recommend this model right away as a price/performance hit. Unfortunately, this is prevented by a bug in the noise suppression: This transmits wind noise, so that the ANC is unusable outside in its current condition. Should Anker go for it again, I think the headphones would be an absolute purchase tip.

As it looks at the moment, you get good headphones, but ANC is only useful indoors. Should Anker soon support the Life Q20 in the Soundcore app and fix the ANC bug, then the headset would be a real tip.

The Anker Soundcore Life Q20 has the same collapsible design as the Q10. But the first thing you’ll notice is how much more attractive it is to look at. While the Q10 has bright red padding, the Q20 is molded from black or silver plastic. If you prefer a padded headband, this is a bit of a downgrade. However, the Q20 is equally flexible and considerably more sturdy. All the joints and hinges, as well as the extension straps, are made of metal. To put it mildly, they’re built like a brick. At 9.3 ounces, they’re only slightly heavier than the Q10, so they’re still comfortable to wear and carry.

How much battery life you’ll get from the Q20 will depend on what options you’re using. With the noise cancelling off, you’ll get up to 60 hours. However, turning on the noise cancelling will cut the Q20’s battery life to about 40 hours. These are manufacturer ratings. As always, your mileage may vary. But running out of battery shouldn’t be a significant concern regardless. And if you happen to find that you’ve run out of juice, there’s a quick charge option. 5 minutes on the micro-USB charger will get you about 4 hours of listening time. In total, charging from a dead battery takes about 2 hours.

Like its little brother, the Q20 uses the Bluetooth 5.0 protocol, and includes a 50-foot range booster. This ensures a seamless, low-lag connection, making the Q20 an ideal choice for gamers or movie lovers. Should you desire, you can also use a 3.5mm aux cable. This will provide a similar low-lag experience, and you won’t need to worry about draining your battery.

Sound Quality

The Soundcore Life Q20 uses custom oversized 40mm dynamic drivers. These are similar to the drivers used in the Q10, and provide similar sound quality. This is a good thing, since the Q10 is already pretty good. Whether you’re a fan of country, hip-hop, or electronica, you’ll be pleased with the overall performance. The Q20 also uses similar BASSUP technology to the Q10. However, the controls aren’t quite as simple. Rather than a dedicated BASSUP button, you simply double-press the play button. This will instantly activate a powerful, intense bass boost, bringing new life to bass-heavy genres. Double-pressing the play button again will turn BASSUP mode off.

The Q20’s primary upgrade over the Q10 is the active noise cancelling technology. The noise cancelling is optional. You can turn it off when you’re in a quiet environment and want to save batteries. When you’re in a loud environment like a commuter train, you can have privacy at the push of a button. The Q20 also uses noise cancelling on the built-in microphones. This means you’ll have exceptionally clear hands-free calling, both for you and for the person on the other end. And the dual microphones ensure better noise cancelling than a single mic. That said, much like the Q10, the Q20 only supports hands-free calling via Bluetooth. When using the 3.5mm aux cable, there’s no way to make phone calls.

To get better sound quality than the Q20, you’ll need a pair of studio headphones. If that’s what you need, consider the V-MODA M-200. They provide the best audio you can get from a pair of headphones, but they’re strictly a wired pair.

As you can see, the Anker Soundcore Life Q10 and Q20 are similar in a lot of ways. This is to be expected, since they’re part of the same product line. To begin with, they both offer stellar sound quality. If you want to get full-spectrum sound with punchy bass, either of these headphones is a good choice. They both also have an ergonomic design. The flexible headbands are very sturdy, and the memory foam ear cups provide a tight, sweat-free seal. When it comes to comfort, the choice is a bit of a toss-up. The Q10 features a padded head strap. However, the Q20 has rotating ear cups for a better fit. Which one is more important is a matter of preference. Additionally, the Q10’s utilize a modern USB-C connection, whereas the Q20’s rely on the outdated micro-USB connection.

Affordable Headphones with Bluetooth Connectivity, ANC and Impressive Battery Life

With the Soundcore Life Q20, Anker adds to its wireless range with a pair of over-ears that are ideal for everyday listening thanks to respectable sound quality and active noise-cancelling properties. This robust Anker model is quick to charge and supports Bluetooth 5.0, while there are functional device controls for both Android and iOS systems as standard.

While these over-ears have a primarily plastic construction, things look and feel surprisingly robust. What’s more, the material choice doesn’t steal away from the impressive-looking finish. Wearing comfort is admittedly good, but the headphones do sit a little loosely on the head, partly due to the fairly light weight of 259 grams. As the earpieces can be tilted and rotated freely, the fit is ultimately very flexible and can be adapted to a variety of head shapes. Furthermore, the oval-shaped earpieces sit in a diagonal arrangement within the main housing, meaning that the wearer enjoys decent enough shielding against outside noise from the off. Another perk to note is that despite sizzling summer temperatures at the time of testing, these headphones didn’t suffer from any uncomfortable heating when worn outside. The foldable design allows for relatively compact storage and transport, although these are on somewhat on the larger side for similar devices in this class. The larger, looser design of the Soundcore Life Q20 will, however, find favour with those seeking something with lower contact pressure.

Thanks to the quick charging function, these Bluetooth headphones can be used for a full four hours after a mere five minutes of charging. To enjoy maximum performance, a full charge cycle of two hours is required via the USB cable supplied. During the test, these headphones certainly impressed with a full battery life in excess of 65 hours. This is particularly noteworthy when you consider playback was often enjoyed with higher levels enabled. According to the manufacturer, a battery runtime of approximately 30 hours can be expected with ANC enabled. Alternatively, you can settle for wired use, with a 3.5 mm audio input on hand. A mini jack cable is also included as an accessory for this very purpose.

Device Control

The Soundcore Life Q20 offered stable ranges of up to 12 metres in the field when tested with a variety of Android and iOS devices. Pairing is achieved by pressing and holding the power button, which launches the device itself and automatically initiates Bluetooth pairing. When successfully connected, the 3-button remote on the right-hand side of the headphone housing can be used for key device control. The central multi-functional button controls play/stop functionality, as well as telephone call acceptance and termination. A separate plus and minus symbol can also be found for handling volume adjustments. These also double up as title navigation controls. The sound of these over-ear headphones convince with a clear and balanced output, although the basses are very present, reaching into the lower bass range. Highs are also represented in the upper frequencies without any real issue, with slight distortions only really noticeable at higher levels. Sound is also lively, with an energetic response and tight stereo stage. With all this considered, these Bluetooth headphones can be seen as a suitable option for almost any genre of music and a wide range of everyday applications. All in all, the sound quality is very good for a device at this price level.

Those with a love of big bass can access the BassUp mode by double-clicking the middle button. In my opinion, this bass boost function has not been tuned with any great degree of success, with low frequencies far too dominant, drowning out the mid-range and trebles. Since the lower bass range also lacks clear definition, the bass output tends to distract from the overall listening experience.

Active Noise Cancelling

In contrast, the ANC mode is far more convincing in its delivery. This feature can be switched on and off via a switch on the left side of the device. The ANC system, with no less than four microphones utilised, significantly reduces distracting everyday background noise, proving particularly effective when listening in public spaces like a heavily congested commuter train carriage. When it comes to more complex sound sources, however, a less effective level of noise suppression is to be expected.

We’re going to be battling these two headphones to see who is the winner.

Firstly let’s run through what’s the same on both of these headphones; both headphones feature the same battery life at 40 hours with Noise Cancelling on and 60 hours with Noise canceling off both connect to your devices using Bluetooth 5.0, and both are high-res audio certified meaning you’ll get great audio on both

Both feature Noise canceling, but this is where the similarities end.

Anker Q20 vs Anker Q30

The main difference between the Anker Q20 and Q30 is that Q20s have a micro USB for charging, and the q30s have a USB Type-c port for charging.

It’s a lot easier to find a USB Type-c cable than a micro USB. This is where the q30s win, but both feature the same quick charging at five minutes of charge for four hours of playback when it comes to pairing the q30s feature NFC making it an easy one-tap solution to pairing to your device

I wouldn’t say that it’s a winner or a deal breaker because both pair pretty easily to your devices

What’s Inside

Anker Soundcore life Q30 does come with a hard case and Type-C Cable, where Q20 comes with a pouch and micro USB Cable. Hardcase is much safer for headphones and always better than a normal pouch for traveling and storing the headphones.

Design and Build

Looking at the design, the q30s are more of a revolution than an evolution of the q20s as the q20s are a lot smaller and simpler in design. On the head, both are comfortable, but the q30s are a better option

As the cups feel a bit more comfortable and cover my ears a little bit better, but for some people who’ve got smaller ears or have a smaller head, you may find that the q30s are a little bit on the larger side, and the q20s might be a bit of a better option.

Controls and Connectivity

Anker Soundcore did everything in physical button controls except on the Q30’s right ear cup you can cover with your hand. It will switch it over into ambient mode so you can hear people around you or hear your surroundings, which is not available in Q20

A huge advantage over the Q20 Q30 model is that it has a dual pairing mode to pair up two devices simultaneously. That makes it easy to switch between whatever device you’re using.

Another win for Anker soundcore life Q30.

App Compatibility

Soundcore has an app, one of the most impressive apps out there in the headphone market. Where you can control your headset EQ settings and Noise canceling settings. They have not included this feature in the Q20 model and address the issue with the Q30 model, where this feature makes a big difference to the overall audio experience

Sound

Let’s get into audio quality. The audio quality is very similar, but the q30s have a slight edge because the q30s have an app that allows you to control how they sound.

The q30s have a great app where you can select several different Soundcore curated presets, and my favorite is being flat, but if none of these work for you, you can also make a custom preset to dial it in to suit whichever kind of music or podcast you are listening to. I love this feature and, in my opinion, is such a big selling point for Anker Soundcore life Q30s

Both headphones sound great, and they both will satisfy you no matter what you’re listening to, like rock, hip hop, or podcast.

Both offer similar performance, and Anker Q30 has a little edge over Q20 due to its App Compatibility.

Active Noise Cancelling

Noise canceling features on both the headphones similar on paper. One party trick for the q30s is that you have different settings for the q30s Noise canceling feature like transport, indoor and outdoor. This allows you to tweak the Noise canceling to suit your surroundings and allows the Noise canceling to focus on the typical sounds that are found in these surroundings.

There is another setting that the Q20s don’t have, and that is the ambient mode; this allows you to listen to your surroundings while having your music playing, meaning that you are aware of what’s going on around you when you’re doing things like for example running cycling or even just doing shopping, and you need to hear what the cashier is saying if you’ve had headphones that have the ambient mode you really can’t go back as it’s such a useful feature in everyday life for me the q30s have it all, it may cost a little bit more than the q20s.

These wireless headsets comes with medium sized cushions on the top of the band, which feels really soft and squishy however, not as squishy or as thick as the high end rivals. These also have memory foam ear cups, which are really nice but again fall short compared to those high end rivals

However, for the money, honestly, I wasn’t complaining too much I had these headphones on a 5 hour journey, and not once did they feel uncomfortable or got sweaty inside.

They did stay very firmly on my head but not so firm that they felt like they were squeezing onto my ears, which is really nice

I would say that they look a little bit on the larger side, and the gap between the head and the headphones themselves is larger than the more expensive headphones. It is much more comfortable if they could make it a little bit smaller and make a little bit slimmer

Anker Soundcore Life Q20 : Controls

These Headsets come with physical controls, which is something I more like than the gimmicky touch controls.

On the right side of the cup they have three buttons which can control the next track and previous track by double pressing

The + and – buttons or single press for volume controls, single tapping the center button will pause and play the music long pressing the center button will activate the voice control and double pressing that center button will toggle the Bass up on or off.

Anker Soundcore Life Q20 : Features

Let’s check the specs of these and see if they are really good for the price.

Anker Soundcore Life Q20 are closed back over headphones that feature 40MM dynamic drivers that are High Res audio certified. They have a frequency response of 16 Hz to 40 kHz, which is an extensive range, especially for the price of these. The impedance is only around 16 ohms meaning that when you connect these up via the 3.5mm headphone jack included in the box, most devices will be more than enough to drive these headphones.

They have Bluetooth 5.0, meaning low latency and a strong connection to most devices you connect them to. They support AAC and SBC codecs, which is pretty standard nowadays; unfortunately, No Apt-X support.

Apt-X is a much better codec and even lower latency than the other two codecs supported by these headphones, so it’s a shame that we don’t see that.

It also includes base up technology, which Anker soundcore claims with their exclusive technology and customized algorithms it can perform real-time analysis on your music and intensify the low frequencies for those hard-hitting beats

Anker Soundcore Life Q20 : Sound

Anker Soundcore Life Q20 are closed back over headphones that feature 40MM dynamic drivers, which are High Res audio.

Anker Soundcore Life Q20 bass comes in tight and punchy, and you have the option to turn up the Bass up feature as well. After switching the Bass up feature, you definitely can hear the difference between different songs, which is nice as it seems to be a bit smarter than just applying the same boost to the low and mid frequencies across any music. This will please the bass lovers out there.

I found it a bit much on certain songs when I had the Bass up feature off was good enough for mids and highs and come in clean and clear. It’s a bit forward but not too bright. Vocals and instruments really stand out.

Having active noise cancellation on. I did notice that the mids and highs seemed to be a bit less forward.

Overall these are an impressive pair of headphones, especially for the price point

Anker Soundcore Life Q20 : Active Noise Cancelling

Okay, let’s come to the main area of this Anker Soundcore Life Q20 Review Noise Cancelling. Noise canceling is that good as they brag about. Let’s check them out,

Noise canceling feature has microphones inside and outside the headphones to cancel airplane noise and car noise by up to 90%, which soundcore claims,

So to control the headphones Noise canceling feature, you have the power button on the left cup and the Noise Cancelling button on the left cup, which turns on and off the Noise canceling. Unfortunately, there is no ambient noise setting with these,

Does the Noise Canceling actually do anything, or are they just the gimmick and ruin the audio listening experience?

The Noise Cancelling is good, but they are not good as the high end models where you’re spending three four five times the amount of these headphones, so I wouldn’t say that they rival them for sure, but for the money, they work very well, and you can hear a slight difference to the music when you do have the Noise canceling mode on.

However, the headphones still sounded great, I used these in taxis and long journeys, and they did make a big difference honestly, so on the Travelling, the engine noise muted by around 60% where Sony and Bose will do about 90% pretty good at this price point ha?

I would say basically, that horrible low end rumble was almost gone, and it allowed me to listen to my music and even watch my Netflix shows without having to crank up the volume all the way up like many other headphones that don’t offer Noise canceling.

It basically makes the listening experience to movies and music much easier on the plane and taxis. As I said before, It cuts around 60% of the engine noise, which is definitely nice.

It cuts out a bit of the voice, too but not completely. I can still hear the faint chatter of people or even a child crying on public transport. This is because the Noise canceling focuses more on those low and slight mid frequencies, whereas voices are normally on the high end of the frequency range

Noise cancellation at the expense of audio quality

A Stylish Design

The Soundcore Life Q20+ headphones are only available in black, but they look classy. They fit comfortably over your ears thanks to a heavily cushioned headband and earpads. Internally, 40mm dynamic drivers deliver a frequency range of 20Hz to 20kHz. The headphones are compatible with Bluetooth 5.0 and support the AAC and SBC codecs, but not AptX.

The right earcup’s side panel houses an array of controls, with a central button for playback and two outer volume buttons. A USB-C port for charging and an input for wired listening sit next to these controls. The left earcup includes a power button and a button for toggling ANC. Both a USB-C-to-USB-A and a 3.5mm audio cable come in the box. Note that in passive (wired) listening mode, the frequency range extends from 16Hz to 40Hz.

Pairing the headphones with the Soundcore app (available for Android and iOS) unlocks additional functionality, including adjustable EQ with multiple presets and the ability to switch between several ANC settings (on, off, and Transparency mode, which lets you hear your surroundings).

Anker estimates that the headphones can last between 40 and 60 hours on battery depending on your mix of ANC usage, but your results will also vary depending on your volume levels.

Disappointing Noise Cancellation

The ANC circuitry does a decent job of dialing back powerful low frequencies, like the rumble you might hear on a plane, but we also hear a hiss when we turn the ANC on. Against more varied noises, like those from a busy restaurant, the headphones manage to dial back some of the mids and lows, but most of the higher frequencies make it past the ANC. In this instance, the signal again suffers from an audible hiss.

We even noticed the hiss in a quiet room; it isn’t unpleasant (think faint white noise), but it’s a typical byproduct of less-effective ANC. Something strange that we noticed in this scenario, however, is that the quiet room noise seems to get louder when we turn the ANC on.

Unfortunately, the ANC also affects audio playback tremendously. With ANC off, the audio is notably louder and more bass-heavy. With it on, the bass thins out and the volume level drops. The difference is dramatic, and this is another indicator of poor ANC implementation. The Transparency listening mode works well, at least.

Heavy Bass Boosting

Because the ANC substantially affects the bass depth, we turned it off for testing audio. On tracks with intense sub-bass content, like The Knife’s “Silent Shout,” the headphones deliver absolutely thunderous low-frequency depth. At moderate volumes, the lows sound earthshaking. At top, unwise volume levels, the digital signal processing (DSP) thins the bass out slightly, but never to the point of distortion.

Bill Callahan’s “Drover,” a track with far less deep bass in the mix, better reveals the overall sound signature. The drums sound huge—round and deep, with serious bass booting. Callahan’s baritone vocals also get a healthy dose of lows. The sound can be a bit bass-forward, but substantial high-frequency sculpting keeps everything in check. This isn’t an ideal sound signature if you’re seeking accuracy, but it may please you if you enjoy intense bass.

On Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild,” the kick drum loop receives just enough high-mid presence for its attack to retain some of its punch. That said, the sub-bass synth hits that punctuate the beat still come across with serious power and the loop itself is considerably boosted. The vocals on this track sound clear and we didn’t notice any additional sibilance. Still, the bass rules here, and at times, the vocals seem to take a back seat.

Orchestral tracks, like the opening scene from John Adams’ The Gospel According to the Other Mary, exhibit almost comical levels of boosting in the lows—the lower-register instrumentation sounds too resonant at times. The higher-register brass, strings, and vocals retain a brightness, but the sound signature is altogether unnatural.

The mic offers average intelligibility; when we tested it using the Voice Memos app on an iPhone, we could understand every word we recorded. Unsurprisingly, we heard some Bluetooth audio artifacts, too. On a decent cell signal, callers should be able to understand you without issue.

Good Noise Cancellation Is Pricey, But You Can Do Better

I am wondering how this product is getting such a good rating. ANC, bass, treble, connectivity, everything sucks except the case. Even the company is unethical, which has mentioned that a user can return the product on the product card. However, this is not the case; the Indian seller refused to return. Maybe this discrimination is against Indian customers. Even the headphones, 4-5 cheaper than this, work better. The worst thing is that they have a 30 days refund policy only on paper. However, their support manager Shane is fooled and refuses a refund. A highly unprofessional and unethical company. How can people compare this piece of shit with Sony WF-1000XM4 and XM3? CONS: * Poor ANC makes background noise bass-rich and more annoying. I think the company doesn’t know what noise cancellation is. * Frequent sound disconnections * Impossible to connect with the app * Not possible to connect two devices * Sound settings only work on mobile devices. When connected to a laptop and other devices the bass is hammering heavy and torturing * Impossible to wear for more than 5 mins PROS: * The hard case

If only they had spent a few bucks more on the actual structural parts of this thing, it could’ve been so good.. First off I wanna give credit where credit is due and say that the battery life is also very very impressive. Having worn them for over a year, the plastic headband started breaking apart in several places after a few months already, having figured that if I just taped the headband back together they were basically still usable and the sound was still very good (mind you I generally take very good care of my devices). Out of the box the bass is a bit thumpy though but you can easily adjust that in the app. Now barely over a year later however the earpads started coming off entirely along the seam on the inside, and the foam on the inside started coming out. Now it wasn’t tearing the cushions or anything, the glue just started coming off along the seam, so again, it wasn’t due to improper use on my part, it was just yet another sign of horrible quality. Not only did this make them uncomfortable to wear, but it also muffled the sound on that one side. Can I recommend them? No, absolutely not. Having google these issues after they appeared, it seems to be a common problem, I even read that one person had to replace them 3 times within warranty period, and all 3 headphones ended up falling apart after a while. Don’t be fooled by the great review that are only based on initial impressions, because if this thing holds out a little longer and doesn’t fall apart til after your warranty period is over, you have just thrown away your 80 bucks that you could’ve used to buy an equally good or even better headphone that would’ve lasted you years longer (or at least longer than a year). Conclusion: I have never in my life seen a product that fell apart this quickly, not even in the early days of aliexpress. Fyi: Headband isn’t very comfortable for +5h sessions either
