Changes to Satellite Distribution in Europe and the Middle East
During the next year or so World Service programme distribution is changing position on some satellites.
The first change, taking place during August, will affect the audience that listen and watch World Service programmes from the Hotbird satellite. The affected services are Arabic TV, Arabic Radio and two of the World Service English radio streams to Europe and the Middle East.
The New Hotbird frequency starts on the 5 August 2014 and the existing Hotbird frequency will cease on 5 September. Tuning details are shown below.

How BBC World Service is Funded
BBC World Service has been funded by the Licence Fee since 1 April, 2014.
This was agreed as part of the UK government’s Spending Review in October 2010. Previously, the BBC World Service was funded by a Grant-in-Aid from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

BBC World Service is part of BBC World Service Group headed by Peter Horrocks.
The BBC World Service Group includes the BBC World Service, BBC Global News Ltd (which comprises the BBC World News Television Channel and BBC.com/news), BBC Monitoring and BBC Media Action (the BBC’s international development charity).

The BBC World Service is an international broadcaster owned and operated by the BBC, with funding from the British Government through the Foreign Secretary’s office. [1] It is the world’s largest external broadcaster in terms of reception area, language selection and audience reach. [2] It broadcasts radio news, speech and discussions in more than 40 languages [3] [4] to many parts of the world on analogue and digital shortwave platforms, internet streaming, podcasting, satellite, DAB, FM and MW relays. In 2015, the World Service reached an average of 210 million people a week (via TV, radio and online). [5] In November 2016, the BBC announced that it would start broadcasting in additional languages including Amharic and Igbo, in its biggest expansion since the 1940s. [6]
The World Service is funded by the United Kingdom’s television licence fee, limited advertising [7] and the profits of BBC Studios. [8] The service was also guaranteed £289 million (allocated over a five-year period ending in 2020) from the UK government. [9] The World Service was funded for decades by grant-in-aid through the Foreign and Commonwealth Office until 1 April 2014. [10]
BBC World Service English maintains eight regional feeds with several programme variations, covering, respectively, East and South Africa; West and Central Africa; Europe and Middle East; the Americas and Caribbean; East Asia; South Asia; Australasia; and the United Kingdom. There are also two separate online-only streams with one being more news-oriented, known as News Internet. The service broadcasts 24 hours a day.
The World Service claims that its aim is to be «the world’s best-known and most-respected voice in international broadcasting», [11] while retaining a «balanced British view» of international developments. [12] Former director Peter Horrocks visualised the organisation as fighting an «information war» of soft power against Russian and Chinese international state media, including RT. [13] [14] [15] As such, the BBC has been banned in both Russia and China, the former following its 2022 invasion of Ukraine and the latter for having «violated regulations that news bulletins should be ‘truthful and fair». [16] [17]

There are several aids to help you find your way to the content you want:
i) Navigation bar
This is found towards the top of every page on the site and will allow you to jump between the main content areas of the site such as News, You Me Us, Sport, Music and Work. This navigation is also available on the left hand side of the pages in the grey shaded area.
ii) Crumb trail eg. Learning English > in the News
A clear path is shown at the top of each page. You can go to any point along that path and link through to the page above in the hierarchy. This is useful if the current page is not what you want but you want something similar or if you just want to know where you are in the site structure.
iii) Search
This can be found in the top right hand corner of every page of the site. It allows you to type in any key words. The returned page lists all the pages on the BBC World Service site that contain those words.

Installing a RealPlayer is advisable (see downloading the free Real player). The BBC World Service audio is mainly encoded for Real Audio version 4 which should be accessible using either a Windows Media Player or RealPlayer Version 4 and above.
Getting the audio player
For optimum listening BBC World Service recommends that you download a RealPlayer. You can download the basic player for free. Follow our simple 3 step instructions for downloading the free RealOne Player.
1) Clicking on the link above will see you arrive at a form. Choose your nearest country location. Click on the new pop up window to download the player.
2) When prompted choose save/or save to disk and specify the directory where you want the installation programme to be saved.
3) When the programme has finished downloading onto your hard drive you will be asked if you want to install the programme.
Click Yes and the programme will install on your machine.
Once installed, click on any speaker on the BBC World Service site and you will be able to listen to any of our programmes or audio content. If you are still encountering difficulty listening to web site audio contact help@real.com to solve any technical problems with the players themselves.
i) «I can’t hear the audio clip»
Has the file definitely loaded or is it still waiting to load?
Is your player displaying the title of the clip?
If not the file probably hasn’t loaded.
If the title of the clip is displayed and the numbers in the bottom right hand corner of the player appear to be counting upwards then check that your speakers or headphones are plugged in.
Check the volume control on your speakers and your computer to see that they are not turned down or muted.
Still no joy? E-mail us and tell us which piece of audio you are having trouble with. Try to include information about the content and the URL of the page you found it on.
ii) «I can hear other audio but not this clip»
Is the audio you can hear on the BBC World Service site or another site? Check the other site to see what audio format they are providing. It may be that the audio format on their site is different.
If the audio format is the same, are you using a RealOne player or another player? At present BBC World Service is only able to encode audio for RealOne players. Microsoft’s windows media player is also capable of playing Real Audio files. If you are using a player other than these we cannot guarantee that you will be able to listen to BBC World Service content.
iii) «I can’t download BBC World Service audio»
Due to copyright issues BBC World Service audio can only be streamed over the internet and is not available in a downloadable form.

You are not permitted to copy, broadcast, download, store (in any medium), transmit, show or play in public, adapt or change in any way the content of these BBC web pages for any other purpose whatsoever without the prior written permission of the BBC.

In the UK, BBC World Service radio in English is available on DAB, online, mobile and on all digital TV platforms. Across Western Europe, BBC World Service radio in English is available via internet radio, mobile, online and on satellite TV. This is in addition to overnight transmissions of BBC World Service on BBC Radio 4 frequencies.

– Сделал, сделал предложение. Мама! Мама! – кричала она. Графиня не верила своим ушам. Денисов сделал предложение. Кому? Этой крошечной девочке Наташе, которая еще недавно играла в куклы и теперь еще брала уроки.
– Наташа, полно, глупости! – сказала она, еще надеясь, что это была шутка.
– Ну вот, глупости! – Я вам дело говорю, – сердито сказала Наташа. – Я пришла спросить, что делать, а вы мне говорите: «глупости»…
Графиня пожала плечами.
– Ежели правда, что мосьё Денисов сделал тебе предложение, то скажи ему, что он дурак, вот и всё.
– Нет, он не дурак, – обиженно и серьезно сказала Наташа.
– Ну так что ж ты хочешь? Вы нынче ведь все влюблены. Ну, влюблена, так выходи за него замуж! – сердито смеясь, проговорила графиня. – С Богом!
– Нет, мама, я не влюблена в него, должно быть не влюблена в него.
– Ну, так так и скажи ему.
– Мама, вы сердитесь? Вы не сердитесь, голубушка, ну в чем же я виновата?
– Нет, да что же, мой друг? Хочешь, я пойду скажу ему, – сказала графиня, улыбаясь.
– Нет, я сама, только научите. Вам всё легко, – прибавила она, отвечая на ее улыбку. – А коли бы видели вы, как он мне это сказал! Ведь я знаю, что он не хотел этого сказать, да уж нечаянно сказал.
– Ну всё таки надо отказать.
– Нет, не надо. Мне так его жалко! Он такой милый.
– Ну, так прими предложение. И то пора замуж итти, – сердито и насмешливо сказала мать.
– Нет, мама, мне так жалко его. Я не знаю, как я скажу.
– Да тебе и нечего говорить, я сама скажу, – сказала графиня, возмущенная тем, что осмелились смотреть, как на большую, на эту маленькую Наташу.
– Нет, ни за что, я сама, а вы слушайте у двери, – и Наташа побежала через гостиную в залу, где на том же стуле, у клавикорд, закрыв лицо руками, сидел Денисов. Он вскочил на звук ее легких шагов.
– Натали, – сказал он, быстрыми шагами подходя к ней, – решайте мою судьбу. Она в ваших руках!
– Василий Дмитрич, мне вас так жалко!… Нет, но вы такой славный… но не надо… это… а так я вас всегда буду любить.
Денисов нагнулся над ее рукою, и она услыхала странные, непонятные для нее звуки. Она поцеловала его в черную, спутанную, курчавую голову. В это время послышался поспешный шум платья графини. Она подошла к ним.
– Василий Дмитрич, я благодарю вас за честь, – сказала графиня смущенным голосом, но который казался строгим Денисову, – но моя дочь так молода, и я думала, что вы, как друг моего сына, обратитесь прежде ко мне. В таком случае вы не поставили бы меня в необходимость отказа.
– Г’афиня, – сказал Денисов с опущенными глазами и виноватым видом, хотел сказать что то еще и запнулся.
Наташа не могла спокойно видеть его таким жалким. Она начала громко всхлипывать.
– Г’афиня, я виноват перед вами, – продолжал Денисов прерывающимся голосом, – но знайте, что я так боготво’ю вашу дочь и всё ваше семейство, что две жизни отдам… – Он посмотрел на графиню и, заметив ее строгое лицо… – Ну п’ощайте, г’афиня, – сказал он, поцеловал ее руку и, не взглянув на Наташу, быстрыми, решительными шагами вышел из комнаты.
На другой день Ростов проводил Денисова, который не хотел более ни одного дня оставаться в Москве. Денисова провожали у цыган все его московские приятели, и он не помнил, как его уложили в сани и как везли первые три станции.
После отъезда Денисова, Ростов, дожидаясь денег, которые не вдруг мог собрать старый граф, провел еще две недели в Москве, не выезжая из дому, и преимущественно в комнате барышень.
Соня была к нему нежнее и преданнее чем прежде. Она, казалось, хотела показать ему, что его проигрыш был подвиг, за который она теперь еще больше любит его; но Николай теперь считал себя недостойным ее.
Он исписал альбомы девочек стихами и нотами, и не простившись ни с кем из своих знакомых, отослав наконец все 43 тысячи и получив росписку Долохова, уехал в конце ноября догонять полк, который уже был в Польше.
– Имею удовольствие говорить с графом Безухим, ежели я не ошибаюсь, – сказал проезжающий неторопливо и громко. Пьер молча, вопросительно смотрел через очки на своего собеседника.
– Я слышал про вас, – продолжал проезжающий, – и про постигшее вас, государь мой, несчастье. – Он как бы подчеркнул последнее слово, как будто он сказал: «да, несчастье, как вы ни называйте, я знаю, что то, что случилось с вами в Москве, было несчастье». – Весьма сожалею о том, государь мой.
Пьер покраснел и, поспешно спустив ноги с постели, нагнулся к старику, неестественно и робко улыбаясь.
– Я не из любопытства упомянул вам об этом, государь мой, но по более важным причинам. – Он помолчал, не выпуская Пьера из своего взгляда, и подвинулся на диване, приглашая этим жестом Пьера сесть подле себя. Пьеру неприятно было вступать в разговор с этим стариком, но он, невольно покоряясь ему, подошел и сел подле него.
– Вы несчастливы, государь мой, – продолжал он. – Вы молоды, я стар. Я бы желал по мере моих сил помочь вам.
– Ах, да, – с неестественной улыбкой сказал Пьер. – Очень вам благодарен… Вы откуда изволите проезжать? – Лицо проезжающего было не ласково, даже холодно и строго, но несмотря на то, и речь и лицо нового знакомца неотразимо привлекательно действовали на Пьера.
– Но если по каким либо причинам вам неприятен разговор со мною, – сказал старик, – то вы так и скажите, государь мой. – И он вдруг улыбнулся неожиданно, отечески нежной улыбкой.
– Ах нет, совсем нет, напротив, я очень рад познакомиться с вами, – сказал Пьер, и, взглянув еще раз на руки нового знакомца, ближе рассмотрел перстень. Он увидал на нем Адамову голову, знак масонства.
– Позвольте мне спросить, – сказал он. – Вы масон?
– Да, я принадлежу к братству свободных каменьщиков, сказал проезжий, все глубже и глубже вглядываясь в глаза Пьеру. – И от себя и от их имени протягиваю вам братскую руку.
– Я боюсь, – сказал Пьер, улыбаясь и колеблясь между доверием, внушаемым ему личностью масона, и привычкой насмешки над верованиями масонов, – я боюсь, что я очень далек от пониманья, как это сказать, я боюсь, что мой образ мыслей насчет всего мироздания так противоположен вашему, что мы не поймем друг друга.
– Мне известен ваш образ мыслей, – сказал масон, – и тот ваш образ мыслей, о котором вы говорите, и который вам кажется произведением вашего мысленного труда, есть образ мыслей большинства людей, есть однообразный плод гордости, лени и невежества. Извините меня, государь мой, ежели бы я не знал его, я бы не заговорил с вами. Ваш образ мыслей есть печальное заблуждение.
– Точно так же, как я могу предполагать, что и вы находитесь в заблуждении, – сказал Пьер, слабо улыбаясь.
– Я никогда не посмею сказать, что я знаю истину, – сказал масон, всё более и более поражая Пьера своею определенностью и твердостью речи. – Никто один не может достигнуть до истины; только камень за камнем, с участием всех, миллионами поколений, от праотца Адама и до нашего времени, воздвигается тот храм, который должен быть достойным жилищем Великого Бога, – сказал масон и закрыл глаза.
– Я должен вам сказать, я не верю, не… верю в Бога, – с сожалением и усилием сказал Пьер, чувствуя необходимость высказать всю правду.
Масон внимательно посмотрел на Пьера и улыбнулся, как улыбнулся бы богач, державший в руках миллионы, бедняку, который бы сказал ему, что нет у него, у бедняка, пяти рублей, могущих сделать его счастие.
– Да, вы не знаете Его, государь мой, – сказал масон. – Вы не можете знать Его. Вы не знаете Его, оттого вы и несчастны.
– Да, да, я несчастен, подтвердил Пьер; – но что ж мне делать?
– Вы не знаете Его, государь мой, и оттого вы очень несчастны. Вы не знаете Его, а Он здесь, Он во мне. Он в моих словах, Он в тебе, и даже в тех кощунствующих речах, которые ты произнес сейчас! – строгим дрожащим голосом сказал масон.
Он помолчал и вздохнул, видимо стараясь успокоиться.
– Ежели бы Его не было, – сказал он тихо, – мы бы с вами не говорили о Нем, государь мой. О чем, о ком мы говорили? Кого ты отрицал? – вдруг сказал он с восторженной строгостью и властью в голосе. – Кто Его выдумал, ежели Его нет? Почему явилось в тебе предположение, что есть такое непонятное существо? Почему ты и весь мир предположили существование такого непостижимого существа, существа всемогущего, вечного и бесконечного во всех своих свойствах?… – Он остановился и долго молчал.
Пьер не мог и не хотел прерывать этого молчания.
– Он есть, но понять Его трудно, – заговорил опять масон, глядя не на лицо Пьера, а перед собою, своими старческими руками, которые от внутреннего волнения не могли оставаться спокойными, перебирая листы книги. – Ежели бы это был человек, в существовании которого ты бы сомневался, я бы привел к тебе этого человека, взял бы его за руку и показал тебе. Но как я, ничтожный смертный, покажу всё всемогущество, всю вечность, всю благость Его тому, кто слеп, или тому, кто закрывает глаза, чтобы не видать, не понимать Его, и не увидать, и не понять всю свою мерзость и порочность? – Он помолчал. – Кто ты? Что ты? Ты мечтаешь о себе, что ты мудрец, потому что ты мог произнести эти кощунственные слова, – сказал он с мрачной и презрительной усмешкой, – а ты глупее и безумнее малого ребенка, который бы, играя частями искусно сделанных часов, осмелился бы говорить, что, потому что он не понимает назначения этих часов, он и не верит в мастера, который их сделал. Познать Его трудно… Мы веками, от праотца Адама и до наших дней, работаем для этого познания и на бесконечность далеки от достижения нашей цели; но в непонимании Его мы видим только нашу слабость и Его величие… – Пьер, с замиранием сердца, блестящими глазами глядя в лицо масона, слушал его, не перебивал, не спрашивал его, а всей душой верил тому, что говорил ему этот чужой человек. Верил ли он тем разумным доводам, которые были в речи масона, или верил, как верят дети интонациям, убежденности и сердечности, которые были в речи масона, дрожанию голоса, которое иногда почти прерывало масона, или этим блестящим, старческим глазам, состарившимся на том же убеждении, или тому спокойствию, твердости и знанию своего назначения, которые светились из всего существа масона, и которые особенно сильно поражали его в сравнении с своей опущенностью и безнадежностью; – но он всей душой желал верить, и верил, и испытывал радостное чувство успокоения, обновления и возвращения к жизни.
– Он не постигается умом, а постигается жизнью, – сказал масон.
– Я не понимаю, – сказал Пьер, со страхом чувствуя поднимающееся в себе сомнение. Он боялся неясности и слабости доводов своего собеседника, он боялся не верить ему. – Я не понимаю, – сказал он, – каким образом ум человеческий не может постигнуть того знания, о котором вы говорите.
Масон улыбнулся своей кроткой, отеческой улыбкой.
– Высшая мудрость и истина есть как бы чистейшая влага, которую мы хотим воспринять в себя, – сказал он. – Могу ли я в нечистый сосуд воспринять эту чистую влагу и судить о чистоте ее? Только внутренним очищением самого себя я могу до известной чистоты довести воспринимаемую влагу.
– Да, да, это так! – радостно сказал Пьер.
– Высшая мудрость основана не на одном разуме, не на тех светских науках физики, истории, химии и т. д., на которые распадается знание умственное. Высшая мудрость одна. Высшая мудрость имеет одну науку – науку всего, науку объясняющую всё мироздание и занимаемое в нем место человека. Для того чтобы вместить в себя эту науку, необходимо очистить и обновить своего внутреннего человека, и потому прежде, чем знать, нужно верить и совершенствоваться. И для достижения этих целей в душе нашей вложен свет Божий, называемый совестью.
– Да, да, – подтверждал Пьер.
– Погляди духовными глазами на своего внутреннего человека и спроси у самого себя, доволен ли ты собой. Чего ты достиг, руководясь одним умом? Что ты такое? Вы молоды, вы богаты, вы умны, образованы, государь мой. Что вы сделали из всех этих благ, данных вам? Довольны ли вы собой и своей жизнью?
– Нет, я ненавижу свою жизнь, – сморщась проговорил Пьер.
– Ты ненавидишь, так измени ее, очисти себя, и по мере очищения ты будешь познавать мудрость. Посмотрите на свою жизнь, государь мой. Как вы проводили ее? В буйных оргиях и разврате, всё получая от общества и ничего не отдавая ему. Вы получили богатство. Как вы употребили его? Что вы сделали для ближнего своего? Подумали ли вы о десятках тысяч ваших рабов, помогли ли вы им физически и нравственно? Нет. Вы пользовались их трудами, чтоб вести распутную жизнь. Вот что вы сделали. Избрали ли вы место служения, где бы вы приносили пользу своему ближнему? Нет. Вы в праздности проводили свою жизнь. Потом вы женились, государь мой, взяли на себя ответственность в руководстве молодой женщины, и что же вы сделали? Вы не помогли ей, государь мой, найти путь истины, а ввергли ее в пучину лжи и несчастья. Человек оскорбил вас, и вы убили его, и вы говорите, что вы не знаете Бога, и что вы ненавидите свою жизнь. Тут нет ничего мудреного, государь мой! – После этих слов, масон, как бы устав от продолжительного разговора, опять облокотился на спинку дивана и закрыл глаза. Пьер смотрел на это строгое, неподвижное, старческое, почти мертвое лицо, и беззвучно шевелил губами. Он хотел сказать: да, мерзкая, праздная, развратная жизнь, – и не смел прерывать молчание.
Масон хрипло, старчески прокашлялся и кликнул слугу.
– Что лошади? – спросил он, не глядя на Пьера.
– Привели сдаточных, – отвечал слуга. – Отдыхать не будете?
– Нет, вели закладывать.
«Неужели же он уедет и оставит меня одного, не договорив всего и не обещав мне помощи?», думал Пьер, вставая и опустив голову, изредка взглядывая на масона, и начиная ходить по комнате. «Да, я не думал этого, но я вел презренную, развратную жизнь, но я не любил ее, и не хотел этого, думал Пьер, – а этот человек знает истину, и ежели бы он захотел, он мог бы открыть мне её». Пьер хотел и не смел сказать этого масону. Проезжающий, привычными, старческими руками уложив свои вещи, застегивал свой тулупчик. Окончив эти дела, он обратился к Безухому и равнодушно, учтивым тоном, сказал ему:
– Вы куда теперь изволите ехать, государь мой?
– Я?… Я в Петербург, – отвечал Пьер детским, нерешительным голосом. – Я благодарю вас. Я во всем согласен с вами. Но вы не думайте, чтобы я был так дурен. Я всей душой желал быть тем, чем вы хотели бы, чтобы я был; но я ни в ком никогда не находил помощи… Впрочем, я сам прежде всего виноват во всем. Помогите мне, научите меня и, может быть, я буду… – Пьер не мог говорить дальше; он засопел носом и отвернулся.
Масон долго молчал, видимо что то обдумывая.
– Помощь дается токмо от Бога, – сказал он, – но ту меру помощи, которую во власти подать наш орден, он подаст вам, государь мой. Вы едете в Петербург, передайте это графу Вилларскому (он достал бумажник и на сложенном вчетверо большом листе бумаги написал несколько слов). Один совет позвольте подать вам. Приехав в столицу, посвятите первое время уединению, обсуждению самого себя, и не вступайте на прежние пути жизни. Затем желаю вам счастливого пути, государь мой, – сказал он, заметив, что слуга его вошел в комнату, – и успеха…
Проезжающий был Осип Алексеевич Баздеев, как узнал Пьер по книге смотрителя. Баздеев был одним из известнейших масонов и мартинистов еще Новиковского времени. Долго после его отъезда Пьер, не ложась спать и не спрашивая лошадей, ходил по станционной комнате, обдумывая свое порочное прошедшее и с восторгом обновления представляя себе свое блаженное, безупречное и добродетельное будущее, которое казалось ему так легко. Он был, как ему казалось, порочным только потому, что он как то случайно запамятовал, как хорошо быть добродетельным. В душе его не оставалось ни следа прежних сомнений. Он твердо верил в возможность братства людей, соединенных с целью поддерживать друг друга на пути добродетели, и таким представлялось ему масонство.

BBC World News is an international English-language pay television network, operated under the BBC Global News Limited division of the BBC, which is a public corporation of the UK government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. [1] According to its corporate PR, the combined seven channels of the Global News operations have the largest audience market share among all of its rivals, with an estimated 99 million viewers weekly in 2016/2017, part of the estimated 121 million weekly audience of all its operations. [2]
Launched on 11 March 1991 as BBC World Service Television outside Europe, its name was changed to BBC World on 16 January 1995 and to BBC World News on 21 April 2008. It broadcasts news bulletins, documentaries, lifestyle programmes and interview shows. Unlike the BBC’s domestic channels, it is owned and operated by BBC Global News Ltd, part of the BBC’s commercial group of companies, and is funded by subscription and advertising revenues, not by the United Kingdom television licence. [3]
The channel is not broadcast in the UK, though BBC World News reports and programming are also used by the BBC News channel. It is distinct from the BBC Studios operations. The linear service is aimed at the overseas market, similar to RT, [4] [5] Al Jazeera, and France 24.
In July 2022, BBC made the decision to merge both BBC News (for UK audiences) and BBC World News (for international audiences) as one news network, under the name BBC News. The channel is set to be launched on April 2023 and will include news from both the UK and around the world. [6] [7]

Razia Iqbal is one of the main hosts of Newshour, the flagship current affairs programme of the BBC World service. She has worked for the BBC for twenty-five years. She began her career in the newsroom and was soon sent to Pakistan as a reporter. She was the BBC ‘s arts correspondent for ten years and travelled all over the world covering cultural stories.

Jamie Commerasamy is a regular presenter of Newshour since 2010. Before that, James presented the BBC ‘s daily European affairs programme, Europe Today. He is also a presenter on BBC World News TV. James has spent 15 years as a BBC correspondent, with postings in Washington, Paris, Warsaw and Moscow.
James Menendez
James Menendez joined BBC Newshour as a regular anchor in 2012 having worked as a host, correspondent, and international producer for the BBC. He is also a regular anchor on BBC World News TV. James has also worked for the BBC as a world affairs producer, which included deployments to a range of countries including Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Kuwait between 2001 and 2003.
Dan Damon
Dan started out as a BBC radio technical operator before leaving to cover wars and revolutions in countries from Mongolia to Albana with a freelance news team that included his wife, a camera operator. He returned to the BBC as a reporter covering environmental, energy and human rights issues.
Owen Bennet Jones
A BBC anchor for almost 20 years, Owen Bennett-Jones was a BBC correspondent in Romania right after the revolution and covered Europe, Asia and the Middle East reporting on crises in countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq. Owen also writes for UK newspapers such as The Guardian and Financial Times.
Julian Marshall
Julian has been presenting Newshour for quarter of a century! His BBC career began in the mid-seventies with the World Service ‘s Africa division when he reported from all over the continent at a time of considerable political turbulence. And he likes to draw on that background as a Newshour presenter. Along the way he ‘s picked up four Sony gold medals either individually or as part of the team. He ‘s most proud of his award for the release of Nelson Mandela in 1990. Married with four children Julian likes to relax with long distance walks on the west coast of Wales.

Who’s to blame for Egypt’s football tragedy?
It’s now nearly 48 hours after the football match in Port Said that ended in perhaps one of the most significant tragedies of recent times.
74 fans were killed following al-Masry’s unexpected win over al-Ahly, Egypt’s most famous and successful club.
Did fans instigate the clashes themselves, was there a conspiracy to provoke, was there deliberate negligence by police? Or was the whole thing just a case of badly trained police mishandling football crowd violence.
These are now politically charged questions.

Jobless Spain
«Don’t worry, speak to anyone in Malaga and they’ll know someone who is young and unemployed.» Javier, a businessman in the city, tries to reassure us as we’re franticly making calls from the airport lounge in London.
Sarah Holmes and I are on a last minute trip to Spain. Despite having the 4th biggest economy in the eurozone, the country has the worst unemployment in the industrialised world and recent figures show that almost a quarter of the population are out of work. For those aged between 16 and 25 that figure increases to over half. Even in the context of the Eurozone crisis the stats are shocking and have already got many of you talking.
On Wednesday we’ll be broadcasting from Malaga in the south of the country. With a growing young population the situation there is particularly bad and the stats are even more startling; in the region of Anduluca alone almost six hundred thousand young people are looking for work. We’ll be talking to job seekers about their attempts to find work and what can be done to get Spain working again.

Earthrise
Fifty years ago, an image taken from Apollo 8 kick-started the environmental movement. Gaia Vince tells the story of the Earthrise photo.
On Christmas Eve in 1968 Bill Anders was in orbit around the moon in Apollo 8 when he took one of the most iconic photos of the last fifty years: Earthrise. The image got to be seen everywhere, from a stamp issued in 1969 to commemorate the success of Apollo 8, to posters that are still available today. Gaia Vince explores the impact of this image on the environmental movement and our understanding of our place in the universe.
“Oh my God. Look at that picture over there. Here’s the earth coming up. Wow, isn’t that pretty.”
Bill Anders was on the fourth of the ten orbits of the moon on Apollo 8, along with James Lovell and Frank Borman. Bill had spotted the earth through one of the hatch windows and grabbed his camera to take a black and white photo. But just in time, he picked up another camera with a colour film loaded, and the rest is history. When they returned from space – the first mission to orbit the moon – Nasa used Bill Anders’ image of Earthrise in its publicity. Nasa had understood there was an added value of going into space: taking pictures of our home planet.
Stewart Brand was part of both the counterculture and the environmental movement; he’d hung out with Ken Kesey and his merry pranksters and put on happenings. He went on to found the Whole Earth Catalog, which brought together all kinds of alternative thinkers. Stewart Brand put the Earthrise photo on the front cover of one of the editions of the Whole Earth Catalog.
Gaia Vince talks to Stewart Brand, and to scientists and artists, about the continuing importance of seeing Earth from above.
