Американские прог-металеры находятся на вершине карьеры, а, возможно, и вообще, в высшей точке развития стиля «прогрессивный метал». Знаменитая группа предъявляет свои козыри сразу, и это тот же набор, что и обычно – феноменальные напор и сыгранность, харизма и виртуозность.

Роль гитариста Джона Петруччи становится здесь всё более заметной. Он продюсер альбома, автор большинства композиций, его соло длинны, нахраписты и блестящи. Состав группы хорошо известен: кроме Петруччи это Джеймс Лабри – вокал, Джордан Рудесс – клавишные, Джон Маянг – бас-гитара, Майк Манджини – ударные. Диск, в целом, делала команда старых знакомых. За запись отвечал не раз работавший с DT Джеймс «Джимми Т» Меслин, процесс же впервые проходил на ее собственной студии DTHQ (Dream Theater Headquarters). Сведение и мастеринг выполнял Энди Снип, человек, соединяющий таланты музыканта – он ездил на гастроли с Judas Priest, является штатным гитаристом трешеров Sabbat – и продюсера: работал с Cradle Of Filth, Benediction, Cathedral и даже Megadeth.

Он автор обложек альбомов Rush, начиная с Caress Of Steel (1975), Whitesnake, начиная с эпохального «1987», Kingdom Come – с In Your Face (1989), альбомов Coverdale / Page (1993). И с Dream Theater Хью встречается не впервые – он работал, в частности, над кавером альбома Octavarium (2005). Новое творение дизайнера можно долго рассматривать, осознавая, как непросто музыканты понимают тему релиза. Например, приборы, предназначенные для вынесенного в заголовок «взгляда» и украшающие яблоки всех четырех сторон дисков, у кавера стоят на весьма неустойчивой основе – на камне, который застрял между высокими и основательными вершинами, «украшенными» совсем не эстетскими предметами, например, стоптанными башмаками. А на обороте конверта остаются только эти башмаки – вершина за ними. Этот взгляд хочет быть ближе к «простому», народному?
Группа покоряет мастерством и постоянством, а стилистические новации не для них – у них идеи и «старые хорошие» (с). При этом какие-то фрагменты у таких умельцев не могут не удивлять – допустим, фортепианные всплески поверх хэви-риффа в Sleeping Giant и Awaken the Master. И отдельного разговора заслуживает семичастная заглавная вещь, которая занимает четвёртую сторону двойника. Композиция – отдельное произведение, в котором отражены особенности творчества группы: например, необычайной красоты звук виолончели и положенные по жанру мощнейшие групповые фрагменты. А со стильно «нескромным» названием релиза «Взгляд с вершины мира» связан ещё один нюанс – из мелочей, греющих душу. Стороны двойного альбома называются не «side», а «view», то есть это четыре взгляда на мир вокруг.

Dream Theater “A View from the Top of the World” (2021)
“A View from the Top of the World” – 15-й полноформатный студийный альбом группы Dream Theater. Если вкратце, то это один из лучших релизов коллектива за его позднюю историю, и, возможно, прог-металлический «Альбом года». Похоже, неправы те слушатели, которые полагали, что Петруччи сотоварищи исписались, и что времена “Scenes from a Memory” давно в прошлом. После двух не очень удачных релизов – одноимённого (2013) и “The Astonishing” (2016), и одного довольно сносного диска “Distance over Time” (2019), американский квинтет выпустил более чем достойную работу.
Впечатляют не только привычные и ожидаемые от Dream Theater виртуозные партии всех инструменталистов и хитроумные переплетения этих партий, но и детальная проработанность каждой из композиций, отсутствие проходного материала, полный отказ от каких-либо «медляков» и попыток «угодить попсе». Немаловажна и хорошая читаемость в миксе баса и ударных. Семь композиций удерживают в напряжении на протяжении всех 70 минут и не дадут заскучать всем слушателям, кроме тех, кто пресытился прог-металом «по полной программе» или, наоборот, далёк от подобной музыки.
Лучшие композиции – центральный мини-эпик “Sleeping Giant” с разнообразными музыкальными рисунками и непредсказуемой концовкой и завершающий альбом одноимённый трек – эпик в полном смысле слова, с прекрасной атмосферной частью в середине, сдобренной синтезаторной виолончелью. Эти две вещи воплощают в себе то, за что так любят Dream Theater – захватывающее развитие композиций, сложные аранжировки, драйв и грув, тяжесть и техничность, запоминающиеся мелодии и риффы. Можно выделить и “Answering the Call” с хуковым припевом и прекрасным взаимодействием Петруччи с Рудессом, и “Transcending Time”, композицию, явно вдохновлённую Rush, но всё равно приятную и красивую. Она гораздо интереснее аналогичной по стилистике “The Looking Glass” с альбома 2013 года.
Конечно, на альбоме даже в лучших вещах хватает и «дримтеатровских» слабых мест – стандартные, порой откровенно скучные вокальные партии, малоинтересные запилы Петруччи с Рудессом, предсказуемые аранжировочные и композиционные ходы, однообразный саунд, самоповторы. Поэтому шедевром новый альбом назвать не получится. Да и из числа альбомов, записанных с Манджини, “A View from the Top of the World” лучше трёх предыдущих, но, пожалуй, несколько уступает “A Dramatic Turn of Events” (2011) по непредсказуемости и какой-то общей «безбашенности», хотя, возможно, превосходит его по качеству звучания. Можно было бы сказать, что 2020-е американский квинтет встречает в очень хорошей форме, которая могла бы быть ещё лучше, если бы на альбоме присутствовали вещи такого уровня, как “Pull Me Under”, “Space-Dye Vest”, “Misunderstood”, “As I Am”, “Octavarium”, “The Count of Tuscany”, “Outcry”… Но, надеюсь, своё последнее слово музыканты ещё не сказали.

\n \n Sound — 9
\n It’s always an amazing thing when a band can prove its longevity by continuing to release acclaimed albums even coming close to 40 years into their careers. Dream Theater hardly seems to be showing their age, continuing to push their own boundaries even at this stage of their career, with the last decade seeing the band adjust to a replacement of their founding drummer and writing and planning without his organizational skills, and the band putting out three very solid records and one behemoth of a double-disc rock opera (the latter admittedly dividing some fans into \»hate it/love it\» camps). Their appetite for creating a new \»mission statement\» with each album has never seemed to go away, and in preparation for this record, Dream Theater set about putting together their own studio and headquarters in which to write and capture this dramatic new album.
Produced by John Petrucci in the band’s own newly-built headquarters, with mixing help from master metal mixer and current Judas Priest live guitarist Andy Sneap, it’s a big-sounding record that still gives a lot of space to each musician’s sound to cut through. The guitar tone is as fantastic as it’s ever been, and Sneap’s work mixing Mangini’s drums gives him the drum sound he’s always deserved on a Dream Theater album, after four albums of his drum work sounding too tight and robotic. Rudess’ gothic strings and organ sound aren’t as omnipresent as they can be on some later-era DT records, meaning that when they do make an appearance, they fit the tracks better, and his piano playing is somewhat more expressive than technical this time around. And while Myung doesn’t get any big bass guitar showcases a la \»The Dance of Eternity\» or \»Metropolis Pt. 1\», it’s nice to hear him as present and clear on a DT album as this. Obviously, being Dream Theater, the songwriting can border a bit on \»too technical\» for those who have a distaste for lengthy prog songs with constantly shifting time signatures and show-offy solos, but it’s surprising, even despite making a \»lack of self-editing\» the theme on this record, how cohesive the songs sound, overall, with the flow of the songs feeling very natural, a benefit of DT having been on top of their game for so long.

\n Even with the lyrics, Dream Theater remains consistent in their quality, and even though this isn’t a concept album, it does feel like there is something of a flow to the pacing of the record. \»The Alien\», penned by vocalist James LaBrie, postulates humanity’s future among the stars, becoming the aliens to those on other worlds as we colonize the stars (\»Understand the meaning/Certain we’ll extend the scale of consciousness/Woman, child and man/Multi planet species out amongst the stars/Not stuck in and around/Who and what we are\»). \»Invisible Monster\», however, takes on more internal demons as it depicts the struggles those with anxiety face day-to-day (\»Hiding, never showing its face/Feeding on irrational fear/Thoughts race at a feverish pace, soaring on a flight of ideas/Perched on its victim’s shoulder whispering in his ear/Things that may never happen/Worries too much to bear/Invisible monster/Always felt but never seen/Unwelcome presence refusing to leave\»). A similar theme is explored in the track \»Sleeping Giant\», imploring us to recognize and even embrace and understand our dark sides so we can live life more completely, without letting it get the better of us (\»When we lay our armor down/Fragments of our love/Slip through the cracks of hate/But the raging storm below/Will never go away/If it is not embraced\»). John Myung gets a credit on \»Awaken the Master\», which shows his typical cryptic writing style (\»You made it to the top/Just to find out/You’re only halfway there/All along missing the point of the journey\»). In the title track, Petrucci explores the psyche of the adrenaline-junkie, those who do dangerous and seemingly-impossible things like solo-climbing mountains, deep-sea diving, and any other activity where one false move can end one’s life, and the high one can get from being on that brink (\»The moment that you recognize/Just where your limits lie/Hanging on the brink of death/You’re never more alive/When you reach the pinnacle/The world is at your feet/Welcome to the mind unleashed/The impossible is never out of reach/When barriers are broken, greatness is achieved/Self belief will build a life of legacy\»).
\n \n Overall Impression — 9
\n With \»A View from the Top of the World\», Dream Theater expands yet again on what they’ve been doing for their entire career, and while this album might not go down as one of their historic classics, it really is a testament to the band’s skill, passion and drive that they have managed to continue to put out records on this level of quality for as long as they have, and still find ways to surprise us and experiment with their sound (especially with Petrucci finding the room for even one more string on his instrument).
Coming from the already quite solid \»Distance over Time\», this is an album that’s certain to please fans of that record, while also satisfying the needs of those who felt that album could have used more of DT’s signature prog-metal flourishes. And it does so without sacrificing good songwriting practices or melodic cohesion, which is a further compliment to give the band for their work on this record. I can only really think of incredibly minor nags like the intro of the epic-length title track being too similar to the final track on \»Distance over Time\» and for it lacking any particular \»signature melodies\», and maybe wishing to hear more big, soaring melodies from James LaBrie throughout the record overall, but this is still a fantastic listen from beginning to end.

A View from the Top of the World is the seventh and final track on Dream Theater’s fifteenth studio album, A View from the Top of the World. It is by far the longest track on the album, beating Sleeping Giant by 10 minutes and 19 seconds.
It is also the sixth song released by the band that passes 20 minutes in length, and the first title track released by the band since Octavarium.
John Petrucci recorded this song using a 7-string guitar in standard tuning (B-E-A-D-G-B-E).

Before the release of the album, John Myung spoke in an interview with Revolver Magazine about how difficult learning and playing the title track is:
«What makes this a challenge to play for me would be that it’s a 20-minute epic, so the memorization aspect is the first part of the challenge. And then there are certain sections that I have to focus on. For instance, there is a classical Mozart-like section that happens in the second half of the song. It’s the type of part that definitely takes a bit of practice, when taken out of context it turns into a cool little exercise all by itself.»

Собственно, на этом можно было бы поставить точку. Dream Theater давно уже не просто группа, и даже не бренд, а своеобразны знак качества в современно музыке. И, наверное, никто уже не ждет, что они вдруг однажды сорвутся и выпустят посредственный, проходной диск. Ну, то все равно, что ждать, когда же Луна свалится на Землю. Dream Theater регулярно выдают высококачественную музыку. То, что они делают, просто невозможно назвать пошлым словом «продукт». Когда слушаешь их очередной шедевральный альбом, невозможно отделаться от ощущения, что эта музыка не продумана тщательнейшим образом, не просчитана и выверена до каждой ноты, а сыграна от души, на чистой импровизации. Хотя, конечно же, это не так, и каждый трек Dream Theater — результат долгих репетиций и сложного выбора из десятков и сотен часов записанных материалов. Но, даже если это и работа, то такая, от которой сами музыканты получают огромное удовольствие. Иначе не могла бы их музыка быть настолько светлой и вдохновляющей.
Если «A View From The Top Of The World» и отличается чем от предыдущих работ группы, то разве что только тем, что на этот раз они отдали предпочтение длинным и сверхдлинным композициям, насыщенным продолжительными сольными номерами. При общей продолжительности диска в 70 минут, на нем всего 8 композиций. Средняя продолжительность трека — 8 минут. Завершающая диск композиция «A View from the Top of the World» — это музыкальное путешествие продолжительностью в 20 с лишним минут.
Как всегда, Dream Theater выкладываются по полной программе. И демонстрируют лучшее, на что они способны, как в плане сочинительства, так и в мастерстве владения инструментами. И даже относительно недавнее приобретение Майк Маджини отлично вписался в состав группы, в которой появился 10 лет назад, заменив казалось бы незаменимого Майка Портного.
Одним словом, великолепный альбом. Чистое музыкальное удовольствие от начала и до конца.
Иначе и быть не могло.

Dream Theater Announce 15th Album ‘A View From the Top of the World’ + 2021 U.S. Tour
Progressive metal icons Dream Theater have set A View From the Top of the World as the title of their 15th studio album, due Oct. 22 on InsideOut Music. A fall U.S. tour will commence soon after with special guest Arch Echo.
A View From the Top of the World will boast seven tracks with a runtime of just over 70 minutes, a great deal of which is occupied by the 20-minute title track which closes the album.
The artwork comes courtesy of the legendary Hugh Syme (Rush, Iron Maiden, Whitesnake, Fates Warning, Queensryche).

«We just love to play our instruments. That never goes away,» commented guitarist John Petrucci. «I love to be creative, write and exercise that part of my mind. «Пропаганда» была продюсерским проектом, но на фоне остальных девичьих групп отличалась «уличным» имиджем и использовала в песнях много речитатива. 18-летняя Вика Воронина прекрасно уловила стиль и сочинила не только «Мелом», но и весь дебютный альбом «Детки», который Олег Кармунин горячо рекомендует переслушать прямо сейчас. Я переслушивать не стал, но перечитал свою (хвалебную, как ни странно) рецензию 20-летней давности, в которой есть, например, следующий вывод: «Как бы то ни было, результат удивителен: попсовую пластинку «Детки» не стыдно слушать в любой компании».

I’m hardly one who chomps at the bit waiting for a new DREAM THEATER album to hit the market but i do like the band enough to keep up with their albums and listen at least once before moving on to the next thing. Well here we are in the year 2021, some 32 years after the band’s debut «When Dream And Day Unite» and DREAM THEATER is back with its 15th studio album A VIEW FROM THE TOP OF THE WORLD with its surprisingly stable lineup since 2011’s «A Dramatic Turn Of Events.» While DT has been on autopilot for a while now simply recycling its past glory and offering okay enough but won’t blow you away albums, A VIEW FROM THE TOP OF THE WORLD comes off as a nice surprise.
True this new album isn’t reinventing the wheel and could never be mistaken for any other act other than DREAM THEATER but what his album seems to exhibit unlike many of the recent past is a return to the passion that made many of the 90s albums so magical. The tunes seem more inspired, the details seem more ironed out and things don’t sound blatantly by the numbers as they have in the past. In fact this album sounds as if it should be inserted into the timeline where «Falling Into Infinity» fell short. Whatever the case, it seems that the cancellation of the 2020 tour due to the pandemic was just the ticket for the band to find the time to rekindle the dwindling mojo and return to the years of yore when DREAM THEATER albums actually were something to get excited about.
A VIEW FROM THE TOP OF THE WORLD is the first album to be recorded in the band’s own studio, DTHQ (Dream Theater Headquarters) so perhaps this return to form is a result of musical independence that had been lacking. The album was mixed and mastered by legendary Sabbath guitarist Andy Sneap and the musical team of John Petrucci, John Myung, Jordan Rudess, James LaBrie and Mike Mangini sounds as if these guys on the top of their game once again with seven instantly lovable tracks that offer everything you could expect from classic DREAM THEATER. The band has experimented over the years with varying degrees of progressiveness, dedication to the metal aspect of its equation as well as the other elements that make up the DREAM THEATER equation.
On album #15, the band employs all of the metal heft that you can hear on the heaviest albums (such as «Awake»), the most knotty prog fueled gymnastics (as heard on most of the 90s albums) along with the fearless exploration of virtuosic soloing. On A VIEW you will not hear any of those ridiculously convoluted ballads, no substandard vanilla dumbing down of the extremities or blatant mining of their past. What you will hear is excellent songwriting fortified with high standard musicianship and a return to the more progressive aspects that put the prog in the metal back in the day. The album Shortest track «Transcending Time» is 6:25 whereas the highlight of the album which is the title track clocks in at 20 1/2 minutes with three distinct parts! The recent Liquid Tension Experiment sessions seem to have carried over on this one 🙂
Let’s face it, DREAM THEATER has peaked and unless the band decides to completely reinvent itself it’s going to be simply retreading that which it has already done and A VIEW FROM THE TOP OF THE WORLD is no exception. There is nothing on this album that will convert haters and nothing that hasn’t already been explored by the band ad nauseam, however at this stage in the DT game, it’s all about crafting an album that is actually compelling to experience through the band’s tendency to release sprawling albums that defy current attention spans. This one is over 70 minutes long! It’s really hard to say why one album works for me and others don’t but i am quite surprised that this one keeps me engaged for the entire run! This really does bring me back to the era of «Awake» when the band was firing on all pistons. Somehow the pandemic produced a silver lining and some of the classic bands have had the time to reevaluate and reflect on where they once were and where they have drifted. Whatever the case, this is one of the best DT albums for my ears in a loooooooooong time.

Of course, the band do get more adventurous and crazy during the two epic pieces, «Sleeping Giant» and the mammoth title track. The former features some excellent symphonic bits from Rudess’ keyboard parts, as well as some SHOCKINGLY strong singing from James LaBrie. In fact, this album is the best he’s sounded in a long time; he doesn’t try to stretch himself too much vocally on the record, and I think that’s to his benefit. In short, he simply sounds more comfortable here than he has on previous albums. As always, the rest of the band show off their technical acumen very nicely on «Sleeping Giant» with shred solos and off-time licks, with the honky tonk piano of Rudess’ solo being a particularly fun highlight. The title track, meanwhile, goes through about as many twists and turns as you’d imagine from a modern Dream Theater epic. It mostly relies on a flurry of technical riffs and solos, but I have to give a nod to the beautiful midsection; the drums drop out, and all that can be heard is Petrucci’s clean guitar ringing out before the rest of the band eventually enters back in. Great stuff, and it plays like a leaner version of the symphonic break in «Illumination Theory» from the band’s self-titled effort.
The only drawback to all of this is what I’ve already mentioned: a lot of what’s found on A View from the Top of the World is what you would expect from Dream Theater, even if it’s executed very well. The only true surprise on the record is the fantastic power-ballad «Transcending Time», which sounds like it could have been pulled straight out of one of the band’s 90s albums. It’s incredibly emotional and uplifting, giving off similar vibes to «The Looking Glass» but not wearing its influences on its sleeve like that song did. But could there have been more songs like that on the record? Sure, and it would have been nice to hear, but maybe that’d be asking too much of the band. A View from the Top of the World is an incredibly solid album that brings out the best qualities in Dream Theater’s current incarnation; it’s predictable, yes, but you’ll most likely still enjoy it if you keep that caveat in mind. This is the best the band have sounded in a long time, and certainly the best this lineup has sounded; let’s just hope they can keep this trajectory going for future records.

It is, however, necessary to mention that the production is fabulous and might be some of the best they’ve had in years, certainly the most crisp and enjoyable one when considering the Mangini era. And speaking of Dream Theater’s drumming diablo, we have to say that his performance is outstanding throughout the whole album; I believe the band finally get the playing of Mike Mangini they have been waiting for all these years, it is a pity he happens to deliver it on one of the band’s weakest efforts. Same compliment has to go to John Myung, whose bass is finally clear and dominant all the way, allowing the listener to fully comprehend how masterful his playing is. On the other hand, ‘A View From the Top of the World’ is jam-packed with the same old, well-known, and repeated multiple times technical solos by John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess. It is simply impossible to enjoy these at this point. Lyrically, the album does not disappoint that much; the blissful cringe that is all over the texts of DT’s songs is also present, so one could not be unhappy about this aspect of the album.
To summarize, I could simply say so: from the perspective of a newcomer, someone whose first exposure to Dream Theater’s music is this 2021 release, the listener would quite likely be mind-blown; either by the musicality, or by the technical prowess of the instrumentalists, but the impression ought to be strong; Oppositely, from the perspective of someone who is familiar with the band’s entire back catalogue, this album will bore and even intimidate the listener, for the reasons mentioned before. ‘A View From the Top of the World’ is a weak spot in the otherwise nearly-stellar discography of one of the most revered progressive metal acts.

Stylistically «A View From the Top of the World» is unmistakably and through and through the sound of Dream Theater and if youґre familiar with the bandґs preceding releases, «A View From the Top of the World» is not an album featuring many surprises. Itґs technically well played (often virtuosic) progressive metal with a powerful and creative rhythm section, keyboard- and guitar wizardry of various kinds (heavy riffs, fast-riffs, keyboard/guitar solos and harmonies, and all sorts of keyboard/synth sounds), and LaBrieґs distinct sounding voice and melodic delivery in front. Everything is delivered with great skill and the album features high class performances by all involved. While the bandґs incredible skillset shouldnґt be ignored, weґve come to expect high level musical performances from them, so although itґs maybe a bit unfair, my jaw doesnґt drop as often as it used to when listning to a new Dream Theater release.
«A View From the Top of the World» features 7 tracks and a total playing time of 70:19 minutes, which is a considerably longer playing time than the 56:57 minutes that «Distance Over Time» (2019) lasted. While the musical styles of the two albums are pretty similar, «A View From the Top of the World» generally features more longer tracks than the predecessor, including the 20:24 minutes long closing title track. The title track is among the highlights of the album, but most of the material are the sound of Dream Theater playing it safe. The only standout track where they try something a little different and unexpected is «Transcending Time», which sounds like a track Rush wrote but left off «Hemispheres» (1978). The dominant synths are a nice touch on that one, and Mike Mangini also gets to shine a bit on the drums.

В сущности, группа «Пропаганда» никогда не занимала высоких мест в табели о рангах русской попсы, хотя и отметилась несколькими треками «на все времена»: «Белым мелом», «Супердетка», «Яй-я». Кроме этого, ансамбль выделялся неудачным для жанра названием (хуже, на мой вкус, только «Премьер-министр»), а также тем, что автора всех песен Вику Воронину после ухода из группы лишили прав исполнять её произведения. Собственно, именно эта абсурдная и несправедливая история с Викой, скорее всего, и «триггернула» автора цикла Олега Кармунина посвятить выпуск «Пропаганде». Но в процессе погружения в тему он накопал в биографии гёрлз-бэнда ещё массу интересного.
«Пропаганда» была продюсерским проектом, но на фоне остальных девичьих групп отличалась «уличным» имиджем и использовала в песнях много речитатива. 18-летняя Вика Воронина прекрасно уловила стиль и сочинила не только «Мелом», но и весь дебютный альбом «Детки», который Олег Кармунин горячо рекомендует переслушать прямо сейчас. Я переслушивать не стал, но перечитал свою (хвалебную, как ни странно) рецензию 20-летней давности, в которой есть, например, следующий вывод: «Как бы то ни было, результат удивителен: попсовую пластинку «Детки» не стыдно слушать в любой компании».

but rating it average or bad wouldn’t be right. It’s not bad. Yet I find it boring and repetitive. Sounds like any other DT album to me. Yet they are pretty good. Solid 7 to me.

It’s not bad but I feel this is their weakest record to date.
that’s The (Un)Astonishing and it will always be, at least for me.
Dream Theater and the record label, lets face it, there is no passion anymore, it’s all about making sales now.

More or less the same album as last time around, just not as memorable. The only new thing DT adds is 8 string guitars, which aren’t really all that unique anymore.
*Also James’ voice has more noticeable pitch correction. The deterioration continues and at some point he is either going to have to stand down or be fired.

In the case of DT, sadly I think is futile to expect another album as Metropolis (or in my personal case, Six Degrees, my favorite from them), especially when James’ vocals are going for the worst.
