Everything I Knew About Love as a Teenager

Romantic love is the most important and exciting thing in the entire world.

If you don’t have it when you’re a proper grown-up then you have failed, just like so many of my art teachers who I have noted are ‘Miss’ instead of ‘Mrs’ and have frizzy hair and ethnic jewellery.

When I’m a single woman in London I will be extremely elegant and slim and wear black dresses and drink Martinis and will only meet men at book launches and at exhibition openings.

The mark of true love is when two boys get in a physical fight over you. The sweet spot is drawn blood but no one having to go to hospital. One day this will happen to me, if I’m lucky.

You can snog as many people as you like and that’s fine, it doesn’t mean anything, it’s just practice.

The coolest boys are always tall and Jewish and have a car.

Older boys are the best kind because they’re more sophisticated and worldly and also they have slightly less stringent standards.

When friends have boyfriends they become boring. A friend having a boyfriend is only ever fun if you have a boyfriend too.

If you don’t ask your friend about their boyfriend at all they’ll eventually get the hint that you find it boring and they’ll stop going on about him.

It’s a good idea to get married a bit later in life and after you’ve lived a bit. Say, twenty-seven.

Farly and I will never fancy the same boy because she likes them short and cheeky like Nigel Harman and I like them macho and mysterious like Charlie Simpson from Busted. This is why our friendship will last for ever.

No moment in my life will ever be as romantic as when me and Lauren were playing that gig on Valentine’s Day at that weird pub in St Albans and I sang ‘Lover, You Should’ve Come Over’ and Joe Sawyer sat at the front and closed his eyes because earlier we’d talked about Jeff Buckley and basically he is the only boy I’ve ever met who fully understands me and where I’m coming from.

No moment in my life will ever be as embarrassing as when I tried to kiss Sam Leeman and he pulled away from me and I fell over.

No moment in my life will ever be as heartbreaking as when Will Young came out as gay and I had to pretend I was fine about it but I cried while I burned the leather book I was given for my confirmation, in which I had written about our life together.

Boys really like it when you say rude things to them and they find it babyish and uncool if you’re too nice.

When I finally have a boyfriend, little else will matter.

For some, the sound that defined their adolescence was the joyful shrieks of their siblings playing in the garden. For others, it was the chain rattle of their much-loved bike, hobbling along hills and vales. Some will recall birdsong as they walked to school, or the sound of laughing and footballs being kicked in the playground. For me, it was the sound of AOL dial-up internet.

I can still remember it now, note for note. The tinny initial phone beeps, the reedy, half-finished squiggles of sound that signalled a half-connection, the high one note that told you some progress was being made, followed by two abrasive low thumps, some white fuzz. And then the silence indicated that you had broken through the worst of it. ‘Welcome to AOL,’ said a soothing voice, the upward inflection on ‘O’. Followed by, ‘You have email.’ I would dance around the room to the sound of the AOL dial-up, to help the agonizing time pass quicker. I choreographed a routine from things I learnt in ballet: a plié on the beeps; a pas de chat on the thumps. I did it every night when I came home from school. Because that was the soundtrack of my life. Because I spent my adolescence on the internet.

A little explanation: I grew up in the suburbs. That’s it; that’s the explanation. When I was eight years old, my parents made the cruel decision to move us out of a basement flat in Islington and into a larger house in Stanmore; the last stop on the Jubilee line and on the very furthest fringes of North London. It was the blank margin of the city; an observer of the fun, rather than a reveller at the party.

When you grow up in Stanmore you are neither urban nor rural. I was too far out of London to be one of those cool kids who went to the Ministry of Sound and dropped their ‘g’s and wore cool vintage clothes picked up in surprisingly good Oxfams in Peckham Rye. But I was too far away from the Chilterns to be one of those ruddy-cheeked, feral, country teenagers who wore old fisherman’s jumpers and learnt how to drive their dad’s Citroën when they were thirteen and went on walks and took acid in a forest with their cousins. The North London suburbs were a vacuum for identity. It was as beige as the plush carpets that adorned its every home. There was no art, no culture, no old buildings, no parks, no independent shops or restaurants. There were golf clubs and branches of Prezzo and private schools and driveways and roundabouts and retail parks and glass-roofed shopping centres. The women looked the same, the houses were built the same, the cars were all the same. The only form of expression was through the spending of money on homogenized assets – conservatories, kitchen extensions, cars with in-built satnav, all-inclusive holidays to Majorca. Unless you played golf, wanted your hair highlighted or to browse a Volkswagen showroom, there was absolutely nothing to do.

This was particularly true if you were a teenager at the mercy of your mother’s availability to cart you around in her aforementioned Vol
kswagen Golf GTI. Luckily, I had my best friend, Farly, who was a three-and-a-half-mile bike ride away from my cul-de-sac.

Farly was, and still is, different to any other person in my life. We met at school when we were eleven years old. She was, and remains, the total opposite to me. She is dark; I am fair. She is a little too short; I am a little too tall. She plans and schedules everything; I leave everything to the last minute. She loves order; I’m inclined towards mess. She loves rules; I hate rules. She is without ego; I think my piece of morning toast is important enough to warrant broadcast on social media (three channels). She is very present and focused on tasks at hand; I am always half in life, half in a fantastical version of it in my head. But, somehow, we work. Nothing luckier has ever happened in my life than the day Farly sat next to me in a maths lesson in 1999.

The order of the day with Farly was always exactly the same: we’d sit in front of the television eating mountains of bagels and crisps (though only when our parents were out – another trait of the suburban middle classes is that they are particularly precious about sofas and always have a ‘strictly no eating’ living room) and watching American teen sitcoms on Nickelodeon. When we’d run out of episodes of Sister, Sister and Two of a Kind and Sabrina the Teenage Witch, we’d move on to the music channels, staring slack-jawed at the TV screen while flicking between MTV, MTV Base and VH1 every ten seconds, looking for a particular Usher video. When we were bored of that, we’d go back on to Nickelodeon + 1 and watch all the episodes of the American teen sitcoms we had watched an hour earlier, on repeat.

Morrissey once described his teenage life as ‘waiting for a bus that never came’; a feeling that’s only exacerbated when you come of age in a place that feels like an all-beige waiting room. I was bored and sad and lonely, restlessly wishing the hours of my childhood away. And then, like a gallant knight in shining armour, came AOL dial-up internet on my family’s large desktop computer. And then came MSN Instant Messenger.

When I downloaded MSN Messenger and started adding email address contacts – friends from school, friends of friends, friends in nearby schools who I’d never met – it was like knocking on the wall of a prison cell and hearing someone tap back. It was like finding blades of grass on Mars. It was like turning the knob of the radio on and finally hearing the crackle smooth into a human voice. It was an escape out of my suburban doldrums and into an abundance of human life.

MSN was more than a way I kept in touch with my friends as a teenager; it was a place. That’s how I remember it, as a room I physically sat in for hours and hours every evening and weekend until my eyes turned bloodshot from staring at the screen. Even when we’d leave the suburbs and my parents would generously take my brother and me for holidays in France, it was still the room I occupied every day. The first thing I would do when we arrived at a new B&B was find out if they had a computer with internet – usually an ancient desktop in a dark basement – and I would log on to MSN Messenger and unashamedly sit chatting on it for hours while a moody French teenager sat behind me in an armchair waiting for his go. The Provençal sunshine beat down outside, where the rest of my family lay by the pool and read, but my parents knew there was no arguing with me when it came to MSN Messenger. It was the hub of all my friendships. It was my own private space. It was the only thing I could call my own. As I say, it was a place.

My first email address was munchkin_1_4@hotmail.com which I set up aged twelve in my school IT room. I chose the number 14 as I assumed I would only be emailing for two years before it became babyish; I gave myself room to enjoy this new fad and its various eccentricities until the address would expire in relevance on my fourteenth birthday. I didn’t start using MSN Messenger until I was fourteen and in this space of time would also try out willyoungisyum@hotmail.com to express my new passion for the 2002 winner of Pop Idol. I also tried thespian_me@hotmail.com on for size, after giving a barnstorming performance as Mister Snow in the school’s production of Carousel.

I reprised munchkin_1_4 when I downloaded MSN Instant Messenger and enjoyed the overflowing MSN Messenger contacts book of school friends I had accumulated since the address’s conception. But, crucially, there was also the introduction of boys. Now, I didn’t know any boys at this point. Other than my brother, little cousin, dad and one or two of my dad’s cricketing friends, truly, I hadn’t spent any time with a boy in my entire life. But MSN brought the email addresses and avatars of these new floating Phantom Boys; they were charitably donated by various girls at my school – the ones who would hang out with boys at the weekend and then magnanimously pass their email addresses around the student body. These boys did the MSN circuit; every girl from my school would add them as a contact and we’d all have our fifteen minutes of fame talking to them.

Where the boys were sourced from broadly fell into three categories. The first: a girl’s mother’s godson or some sort of family friend on the outskirts of her life who she had grown up with. He was normally a year or two older than us, very tall and lanky with a deep voice. Also lumped into this category was someone’s schoolboy neighbour. The next classification were the cousins or second cousins of someone. Finally, and most exotically, a boy who someone had met when they were on a family holiday. This was the Holy Grail, really, as he could be from absolutely anywhere, as far-flung as Bromley or Maidenhead, and yet there you’d be, talking to him on MSN Messenger as if he were in the same room. What madness; what adventure.

The arrival of virtual boys into the world of our school friends came with a whole set of fresh conflicts and drama. There would be an ever-turning rumour mill about who was talking to whom. Girls would pledge their faith to boys they’d never met by inserting the boy’s first name into their username with stars and hearts and underscores either side. Some girls thought they were in an exclusive online dialogue with a boy, but these usernames cropping up would tell a different story. Sometimes, girls from neighbouring schools who you’d never met would add you, to ask straight out if you were talking to the same boy they were talking to. Occasionally – and this would always go down as a cautionary tale in the common room – you would accidentally expose an MSN relationship with a boy by writing a message to him in the wrong window and sending it to a friend instead. Shakespearean levels of tragedy would ensue.

There was a complicated etiquette that came with MSN; if both you and a boy you liked were logged on, but he wasn’t talking to you, a failsafe way of getting his attention would be to log off then log on again, as he would be notified of your re-entry and reminded of your presence, hopefully resulting in a conversation. There was also the trick of hiding your online status if you wanted to avoid talking to anyone other than one particular contact, as you could do so furtively. It was a complex Edwardian dance of courtship and I was a giddy and willing participant.

These long correspondences rarely resulted in a real-life meet-up and when they did, they were nearly always a gut-wrenching disappointment. There was Max with the double-barrelled surname – a notorious MSN Casanova, known for sending girls Baby G watches in the post – who Farly agreed to meet outside a newsagent in Bushey one Saturday afternoon, after months of chatting online. She got there, took one look at him and freaked out, hi
ding behind a bin for cover. She watched him call her mobile over and over again from a phone box, but she couldn’t face the reality of a meet-up in the flesh and legged it back home. They continued to speak for hours every night on MSN.

I had two. The first was a disastrous blind date in a shopping centre that lasted less than fifteen minutes. The second was a boy from a nearby boarding school who I’d spoken to for nearly a year before we finally had our first date at Pizza Express, Stanmore. For the following year, we had a sort of on-off relationship; mainly off because he was always locked up at school. But I would occasionally go to visit him, wearing lipstick and carrying a handbag full of packets of fags I’d bought for him, like Bob Hope being sent out to entertain the troops in the Second World War. He had no access to the internet in his dormitory, so MSN was out of the question, but we remedied this with weekly letters and long calls that made my father age with despair when greeted with a three-figure monthly landline phone bill.

At fifteen, I began a love affair more all-consuming than anything that had ever happened in the windows of MSN Instant Messenger when I made new friends with a wild-haired girl with freckles and kohl-rimmed hazel eyes called Lauren. We had seen each other around at the odd Hollywood Bowl birthday party since we were kids, but we finally met properly through our mutual friend Jess over dinner in one of Stanmore’s many Italian chain restaurants. The connection was like everything I’d ever seen in any romantic film I’d ever watched on ITV2. We talked until our mouths were dry, we finished each other’s sentences, we made tables turn round as we laughed like drains; Jess went home and we sat on a bench in the freezing cold after we got chucked out of the restaurant just so we could carry on talking.

She was a guitarist looking for a singer to start a band; I’d sung at one sparsely attended open-mic night in Hoxton and I needed a guitarist. We started rehearsing bossa nova covers of Dead Kennedys songs the following day in her mum’s shed with the first draft of our band name being ‘Raging Pankhurst’. We later changed it to, even more inexplicably, ‘Sophie Can’t Fly’. Our first gig was in a Turkish restaurant in Pinner, with just one customer in the heaving restaurant who wasn’t a member of our family or a school friend. We went on to do all the big names: a theatre foyer in Rickmansworth, a pub garden’s derelict outbuilding in Mill Hill, a cricket pavilion just outside of Cheltenham. We busked on any street without a policeman. We sang at the reception of any bar mitzvah that would have us.

Its 2012 and four bright young things end up in a house share in Camden and discover themselves and the city.

Production values were good, well directed, written and shot with an intelligent under-stated score. Cast was strong in depth and for me the lead Maggie played by Emma Appleton stood out, she really bossed it.

I started to watch Dolly Alderton’s BBC Drama ‘Everything I know about love’ with my teenage daughter. She lasted 2mins 46 seconds precisely. It was the Larkin that did it really. Fresh that day from an A level English Literature exam, quotations from the self-depreciating poet were to be fair, the last thing she wanted to hear. ‘And they’re on a train’, she mused before leaving the room, ‘how very Whitsun weddings’.

I continued watching, a fifty something woman perhaps not quite the target demographic, but I was hooked. Rather than something to watch to take the mind off the boredom of the household chores, I soon found myself literally dancing around my ironing board to Rizzle Kicks, Down with the trumpets.

Although set in 2012, the drama resonated with me and I was transported back to the eighties, my own era of misspent youth. Except for the drug taking that is, but still with plenty of alcohol to cloud one’s judgement. Or it may have just been Street’s hat. Whatever it was, I look forward to sharing the chaotic lives of Maggie, Birdy, Nell and Amara over the next few weeks who act as a timely reminder of another Larkin quote ‘You can’t put off being young until you retire’

Series

Fans of Dolly Alderton’s Everything I Know About Love, we’ve got some good news for you: we have a release date and trailer for the BBC adaptation. Keep reading to check out everything we know about the series so far.

Updated 20 May 2022: In a week of excitement for another book-to-TV adaptation, our excitement for upcoming BBC dramas has now increased tenfold. That’s right, Dolly Alderton fans: the trailer for Everything I Know About Love is officially here.

While we got our first glimpse of the characters just the other month, this new trailer gives us all a first look at the magic of the upcoming series. We say magic but what we really mean is the mess, friction and rollercoaster ride of emotions that the book most definitely took us on. And from the looks of the trailer, the new series most definitely will also.

In it, Little Dragon’s Ritual Union offers up the perfect Friday night soundtrack to a group of girls who have just moved to London and have the world at their feet. But as Birdy (Bel Powley) gets a new boyfriend and a steady life, Maggie (Emma Appleton) is left to eat blocks of cheddar in bed, party and try to navigate life without her best friend.

“Everyone I know has gotten so old and un-fun. And I’m like ‘Sorry I want to live before I die’,” she tells a stranger. “We’re in this grubby, golden phase of life that is so short-lived.”

And in one particularly emotional exchange, she tells Birdy: “You will always be my most important person.” To which Birdy replies: “I don’t know if we should be that to each other anymore.” See what we mean by ‘emotional rollercoaster’?

Watch the trailer for yourself here:

We also finally know when the series will be coming to our screens. Everything I Know About Love is coming to BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Tuesday 7 June, with all seven episodes available to watch as a boxset on BBC iPlayer from then also.

Set your reminders, folks.

Updated 15 March 2022: After months of excitement and some social media sneak peeks of the cast, we finally have an official first look at the BBC One adaptation of Dolly Alderton’s Everything I Know About Love.

We knew that the novel seamlessly captured our universal experience of everything female friendship-related, but we weren’t quite ready for the series imagery. It’s giving us comfort, relatability and nostalgia – what more could we ask for from one of the year’s most anticipated dramas?

As well as a cheerful group shot of Bel Powley, Emma Appleton, Aliyah Odoffin and Marli Siu …

… we also have individual character pictures.

We finally have a first glimpse at Maggie (Appleton) and Birdy (Powley) in their wonderful friendship bubble:

Maggie is, quite literally, the embodiment of us all after a great night out and we can’t wait to see how her character unfolds on the small screen:

We have a close-up look of Amara, played by Odoffin:

And also of Nell, played by Siu:

If you think we’re excited, we can’t imagine how pumped Alderton must be for her upcoming adaptation. Sharing the first image on her Twitter, she wrote: “Here’s a first look at my upcoming TV show Everything I Know About Love – a romantic comedy drama about female friendship.

“It’s got my whole entire heart in it and I cannot wait for you to meet these four girls.”

Updated 12 December 2021: Dolly Alderton has confirmed that filming on the BBC adaptation of her bestselling memoir Everything I Know About Love has officially wrapped – and it’s made us even more excited.

Taking to Instagram to share an update on the project, Alderton posted a series of photos from the set, leading with a photo of the series’ stars Bel Powley, Emma Appleton, Aliyah Odoffin and Marli Siu.

Everything I Know About Love: the starry cast of Dolly Alderton’s new TV series is ridiculously good

“It took ten months of writing and rewriting, four months of shooting and countless hours of lockdown zoom meetings in which China Moo-Young [the series’ director] ended up being able to gauge my EXACT emotional response to notes by my exact facial expressions,” Alderton wrote.

“Anyone who knows me knows I am an obsessive – the obsessions are frequent and fervoured – but nothing has ever gripped me as much as making this TV show.”

While we’re yet to learn when the hotly-anticipated series will make its way to our screens, the end of filming means we’re one step closer to the show’s completion.

Keep reading to check out everything else we know about the BBC’s Everything I Know About Love so far.

What is Everything I Know About Love about?

Unlike in the book, Everything I Know About Love will follow the fictionalised story of Maggie and Birdy, two young women who have remained best friends since school.

However, when the pair move to London together “to live it large,” a spanner gets thrown in the works – Birdy gets a steady boyfriend.

As the official synopsis reads: “[Everything I Know About Love is] a generous, funny, warm-hearted and uplifting Sex And The City for millennials which covers bad dates and squalid flat-shares, heartaches and humiliations, and, most importantly, unbreakable female friendships.”

Who stars in Everything I Know About Love?

They will be joined by Gangs Of London star Jordan Peters, who will be stepping into the shoes of Neil, and Marli Siu, who will play Nell.

Aliyah Odoffin, Connor Finch, and Ryan Brown will also make their onscreen TV debuts as Amara, Stree, and Nathan respectively.

Who is working on Everything I Know About Love?

Alongside Dolly Alderton, Surian Fletcher-Jones, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner have been working to adapt the show for Working Title, and Jo McClellan will be executive producing for the BBC.

China Moo-Young, who has worked on projects including Harlots and Call The Midwife, will take on the title of director.

What has been said about Everything I Know About Love?

Announcing the news of the adaptation on Instagram, Alderton said she was “so grateful” to see the story grown and developed “in such safe hands”.

“BBC drama has made extraordinary TV over the last year and it is an honour to be on their slate of upcoming shows,” she said.

“And before every boy I dated a decade ago messages me today to breezily as how I am, it’s semi-fictionalised, so don’t panic fellas.”

In a release announcing the adaptation, she added: “Everything I Know About Love is a sem-fictionalised adaptation of my memoir of the same name.

Laufey Lyrics

«Everything I Know About Love»

So enchanting in every way
It’s everlasting every day
Sweet obsession, rose bouquets
Oh, it’s heaven or so they say

I wouldn’t mind
I heard that falling fast is so divine
Are these songs just telling plain old lies?
Cause that’s everything I know about love
Everything I know about love

I don’t know that much at all
I trip, I fall
Every time I try it’s all too much
That’s everything I know about love

Captivating angel eyes
Stomach sick with butterflies
When will someone prove to me
That this isn’t fantasy

Cause I wouldn’t mind
I heard that falling fast is so divine
Are these songs just telling plain old lies?
Cause that’s everything I know about love
That’s everything I know about love

Oh, I don’t know that much at all
I trip, I fall
Every time I try it’s all too much
That’s everything I know about love

Oh, I don’t know that much at all
I trip, I fall
Every time I try it’s all too much
That’s everything I know about love

Why Everything I Know About Love leaves men baffled

The BBC TV drama based on Dolly Alderton’s memoir captures a female millennial reality that certain men struggle to understand.

I know women who have used Dolly Alderton’s 2018 memoir Everything I Know About Love as a manual for their twenties, revising their life goals in accordance with its core message: that we can learn most about love from our friendships, rather than from romantic relationships. Every time one of my friends is dumped, I sent them a screenshot of a paragraph from one of Alderton’s Sunday Times Style columns. And I went to therapy for the first time after reading the chapter in Everything I Know About Love titled “My Therapist Says”. So I expected that the BBC One drama based on the book – adapted by Alderton herself – couldn’t possibly match the original’s knack for capturing the experience of millennial women.

And yet the Everything I Know About Love screenplay gets those mid-twenties years right. The show provides a chance to look back fondly at a more feral stage of life, as I turn 28 and, one by one, my friends settle down. There’s so much that is familiar – the landlord who resists bringing in a dehumidifier for the damp, the situationships with men whose sexual desires seem to be founded entirely on pornography. The sheer, chaotic energy of the protagonist popping MDMA in Camden while wearing a sequinned dress is particularly nostalgia-inducing in an era of clean-eating, beige-wearing Gen Z.

The TV series is, though, quite different from the book. Alderton separates the two by calling the central character Maggie (Emma Appleton), rather than Dolly. The show also follows Maggie’s best friend Birdy (Bel Powney) – who, like Kristin Davis’s Charlotte in Sex and the City, has an adorable quality that offsets the protagonist’s narcissism – and their two other housemates, none of whom map neatly on to the book’s main characters. Nevertheless, Alderton’s signature touches – the parodies of hen-party invitations and the like that were interspersed with the chapters of her book – have been translated into sharp, real-feeling dialogue (men who are boring to date are compared to plug adaptors: “You know when you need to buy something practical but you don’t want to spend too much money on it?”). Alderton’s conclusions about love are peppered throughout, most notably in a monologue by Maggie’s mother that feels worthy of When Harry Met Sally. It seems very possible that Alderton will write – as she aspires to – the next great romcom.

Of course, Alderton’s book invited criticism of privileged-girl problems; not everyone can relate to taking a £200 taxi to Leamington Spa when drunk. A clear attempt has been made to address this in the screenplay, informed by society’s growing self-awareness in the years since the book was published. One of Maggie’s best friends is black, and there is a pointed scene that makes clear that Maggie cannot possibly “get it” when it comes to race. But the show is measured and reflective rather than superficially “woke” – and, crucially, it never hides Maggie’s privilege. There is less sexual or racial trauma here than in hard-hitting dramas such as I May Destroy You – but that gives the show levity, and allows the lens to widen on broader themes of womanhood.

On which note, it seems to be only male friends or critics who “don’t get the Dolly Alderton thing”. This feels telling to me: men aren’t measured primarily on their attractiveness for their whole lives, so they can’t understand why your teenage crush dissing you as “a lanky minger with no tits”, as happens to Maggie, never leaves you. Men rarely get slut-shamed if they sleep around – as Maggie rather gruesomely does on a university chat board. Ultimately, the series succeeds in the same way the book did: Alderton’s narrative makes women feel it’s normal to have the guys who you like never like you back, to have a constant anxiety that you’re never “enough”. And as with Alderton, there is a glimmer of stardust about Maggie: she’s us – but cool. And if even she feels like a mess then, really, we might all be OK.

I know what it’s like to weather a bad experience and then turn it into shared mythology. Like the couple who theatrically tell the story of their luggage getting lost on their last holiday, taking a line each, we do the same with our own micro-disasters. Like the time India, Belle and I moved house and everything that could possibly go wrong went wrong. The reality was lost keys and borrowing money from friends and sleeping on sofas and putting stuff into storage. The story is a great one.

I know what it is to love someone and accept that you can’t change certain things about them; Lauren is a grammatical pedant, Belle is messy, Sabrina’s texts are incessant, AJ will never reply to me, Farly will always be moody when tired or hungry. And I know how liberating it feels to be loved and accepted with all my flaws in return (I’m always late, my phone’s never charged, I’m oversensitive, I obsess over things, I let the bin overflow).

I know what it is to hear someone you love tell a story you’ve heard approximately five thousand times to an enraptured audience. I know what it’s like for that person (Lauren) to embellish it more flamboyantly each time like an anecdotal Fabergé egg (‘it happened at eleven’ becomes ‘so this was around four a.m.’; ‘I was sitting on a plastic chair’ becomes ‘and I’m on this sort of chaise longue hand-crafted from glass’). I know what it’s like to love someone so much that this doesn’t really annoy you at all; to let them sing this well-rehearsed tune and maybe even come in with the supportive high-hat to boost the story’s pace when they need it.

I know what a crisis point in a relationship feels like. When you think: we either confront this thing and try to fix it or we go our separate ways. I know what it is to agree to meet in a bar on the South Bank, begin bristly then end three hours later, weeping in each other’s arms and promising to never make the same mistakes again (people only ever meet on the South Bank to reconcile or break up – I’ve done some of my finest dumping and being dumped in the National Theatre bar).

I know what it is to feel like you’ve always got a lighthouse – lighthouses – to guide you back to dry land; to feel the warmth of its beam as it squeezes your hand standing next to you at a funeral of someone you loved. Or to follow its flash across a crowded room at a terrible party where your ex-boyfriend and his new wife turned up unexpectedly; the flash that says Let’s get chips and the night bus home.

And I also know that love is a pretty quiet thing. It’s lying on the sofa together drinking coffee, talking about where you’re going to go that morning to drink more coffee. It’s folding down pages of books you think they’d find interesting. It’s hanging up their laundry when they leave the house having moronically forgotten to take it out of the washing machine. It’s saying, ‘You’re safer here than in a car, you’re more likely to die in one of your Fitness First Body Pump classes than in the next hour,’ as they hyperventilate on an easyJet flight to Dublin. It’s the texts: ‘Hope today goes well’, ‘How did today go?’, ‘Thinking of you today’ and ‘Picked up loo roll’. I know that love happens under the splendour of moon and stars and fireworks and sunsets but it also happens when you’re lying on blow-up air beds in a childhood bedroom, sitting in A&E or in the queue for a passport or in a traffic jam. Love is a quiet, reassuring, relaxing, pottering, pedantic, harmonious hum of a thing; something you can easily forget is there, even though its palms are outstretched beneath you in case you fall.

I had lived with my friends for five years before it came to an end. First Farly had left me for her boyfriend, then AJ left, and then India rang me one day to tell me she was ready to do the same, before bursting into tears.

‘Why are you crying?’ I asked her. ‘Is this because of how I was with Farly when she met Scott? Were you scared I was going to go mad? Do you guys all think I’m nuts? That was, like, four years ago, I’m better equipped at handling this now.’

‘No, no,’ she sniffed. ‘I’m just going to miss you.’

‘I know,’ I said. ‘I’m going to miss you too. But you’re thirty this year. And it’s great that your relationship is ready to move forward. It’s completely right and normal for things to change.’ I was surprised at my own rationality on the whole thing and quietly awarded myself a CBE for services to friendship.

‘What are you going to do?’ she asked. ‘You’ve always talked about how much you’d like to try living on your own.’

‘I don’t know. I don’t know if I’m ready for it,’ I said. ‘Maybe I should live with Belle until she decides to move in with her boyfriend. It gives me at least six months to work out what to do next.’

‘Dolly – you’re not The Hunger Games,’ she said. ‘It shouldn’t be an endurance test amongst our friends to see who can stick you out the longest.’

I realized that I had been presented with an opportunity. I could wait until every single one of my friends had found a man and moved out. I could rent with strangers from Gumtree who kept shaving cream in the fridge in the hope that I’d soon find a man and move out. Or I could start a new story on my own.

Finding a one-bedroom flat to rent within my budget wasn’t easy; I was taken to a number of places that had beds next to the ovens and showerheads balanced over a loo in a ‘wet room’. There was the ‘spacious one-bed’ that was twenty square metres big, there was the one with police tape round the front door. India came along with me to viewings, negotiating and interrogating the bluster of estate agents and asking me if I really believed I could manage without a wardrobe and instead keep all my clothes in a suitcase under the bed.

But, eventually, I found a place I could just about afford right in the middle of Camden. It was a ground-floor flat with a bedroom, bathroom and living room, enough space for a wardrobe and a shower that hung over an actual bath. At the back, there was a sunken, damp kitchen with absolutely no drawers that was so small I could barely turn in it, with a porthole window and a canal view that made it feel like I was in a boat. It was not perfect, but it would be mine.

All of us who had lived together did a ‘farewell flat-sharing’ pub crawl on our twenty-something stomping ground. We came dressed as an element of flat-sharing in our twenties, which was just as deranged as it sounds. AJ came as Gordon, our first landlord, complete with midlife-crisis leather biker jacket, white trainers, a short brown wig and permanent smarmy grin. As the resident obsessive cleaner, Farly came as a giant Henry vacuum in a spherical costume with a pipe attached that dragged along the ground the more she drank. Belle came as our loud nightmare neighbour, with smudged lipstick and a Cher wig. India came as a giant bin – as emptying or relining or taking one out seemed to be the most constant motif of our time together – with bin liners tied round her shoes, a lid for a hat and empty face-wipe and Monster Munch packets stuck to her body. I came as a giant packet of cigarettes and immediately regretted it as people kept coming up to me asking for free fags, assuming I was some sort of promo girl for Marlboro Lights hammering the streets of Kentish Town.

We went from pub to pub before ending back outside our first yellow-brick house. We even dropped in on Ivan at the corner shop, only to find out from his colleague that he’d mysteriously ‘gone abroad for some unfinished business’ and left ‘without a trace’.

‘The artists have gone,’ Belle slurred wistfully as we walked along the crescent, day turning into dusk. ‘Now the bankers will move in.’

A week later, I packed my pot plants and paperbacks into cardboard boxes and taped them
up for my new home. On the last night we lived together, India, Belle and I drank discounted Prosecco – the tipple of a bloody decade – and drunkenly danced to Paul Simon around our empty living room. As we waited for our respective moving vans the next morning, we huddled in the corner of our wine-stained carpet, our knees knocking together as we sat side by side, saying very little.

Farly, the most efficient and organized person I will ever know, came over to help me get started with unpacking the day I moved into my new place (‘Are you sure you want to do this?’ I texted her. ‘Please – this is like cocaine to me,’ she replied). We ordered Vietnamese food and sat on my living-room floor slurping pho and dipping summer rolls into sriracha sauce while we talked through where we should put the sofa and chairs and lamps and shelves, and where I would sit and write every day. We unpacked into the night before crashing out on my mattress pushed up against the bedroom wall, surrounded by cardboard boxes of shoes, bags of clothes and stacks of books.

When I woke up, Farly had left for work already and there was a note on the pillow, scrawled in her rotund childlike handwriting that hadn’t changed since she wrote notes on my lever-arch files in Tipp-Ex during science GCSE classes. ‘I love your new home and I love you,’ it read.

The morning sun leaked into my bedroom and poured on to my mattress in a bright white puddle. I stretched out diagonally in my bed, across the cool sheet. I was completely alone, but I had never felt safer. It wasn’t the bricks around me that I’d somehow managed to rent or the roof over my head that I was most grateful for. It was the home I now carried on my back like a snail. The sense that I was finally in responsible and loving hands.

Love was there in my empty bed. It was piled up in the records Lauren bought me when we were teenagers. It was in the smudged recipe cards from my mum in between the pages of cookbooks in my kitchen cabin. Love was in the bottle of gin tied with a ribbon that India had packed me off with; in the smeary photo-strips with curled corners that would end up stuck to my fridge. It was in the note that lay on the pillow next to me, the one I would fold up and keep in the shoebox of all the other notes she had written before.

I woke up safe in my one-woman boat. I was gliding into a new horizon; floating in a sea of love.

There it was. Who knew? It had been there all along.

Everything I Know About Love at Twenty-eight

Any decent man would take a woman at peace with herself over a woman who performs tricks to impress him. You should never have to work to hold a man’s attention. If a man needs to be ‘kept interested’ in you, he’s got problems that are not your business to manage.

You probably won’t be best friends with your best friend’s boyfriend. Relinquish that dream, say so long to that fantasy. As long as he makes your friend happy and you can stand his company for the length of a long lunch, all is well.

Men love a naked woman. All other bells and whistles are an expensive waste of time.

Online dating is for the brave. It’s increasingly hard to meet people in real life and those who take matters into their own hands – who pay a monthly fee for the chance to edge closer to love, who fill out an embarrassing profile saying they’re looking for a special someone to hold hands with in the supermarket – are towering romantic heroes.

Get a Brazilian wax if you want a Brazilian wax. If you don’t, don’t. If you like feeling bare and you’ve got the money to spend, get waxed all year round. Don’t ever get one for a man. And don’t ever not get one for ‘the sisterhood’ – the sisterhood doesn’t give a shit. Volunteer at a bloody women’s shelter if you want to be useful, don’t spend hours debating the politics of your pubic hair. And don’t ever get one because you think not having one is unclean or unsightly – if that were true, every unwaxed male alive would be unclean. (Salary permitting, never go near hair-removal cream again.)

You may not be able to listen to the songs of past relationships in the first few years after the end, but soon the albums will find their way back to you. All those memories of Saturdays by the sea and Sunday-night spaghetti on the sofa will slowly unfurl from around the chords and lift, floating up out of the songs until they disappear. There will always be a faint recognition somewhere deep in the tissue of your guts that tells you that for a week this song, that man, was at the centre of your universe, but at some point it won’t make your heart burn.

If you’re still getting drunk and flirting with other people in front of your boyfriend, there’s something wrong with your relationship. Or more likely, with you. Address why you need this level of attention sooner rather than later. Because no man on earth has a large enough supply of instant gratification to fill that emptiness you feel.

More often than not, the love someone gives you will be a reflection of the love you give yourself. If you can’t treat yourself with kindness, care and patience, chances are someone else won’t either.

However thin or fat you are is no indicator of the love you deserve or will receive.

Break-ups get harder with every year you get older. When you’re young, you lose a boyfriend. As you get older, you lose a life together.

No practical matter is important enough to keep you in the wrong relationship. Holidays can be cancelled, weddings can be called off, houses can be sold. Don’t hide your cowardice in practical matters.

If you lose respect for someone, you won’t be able to fall back in love with them.

Integration into each other’s lives should be completely equal; you should both make an effort to be involved with your respective friends, families, interests and careers. If it’s unbalanced, resentment is on its way to you.

There is no feeling as awful as breaking up with someone. Being dumped is a violently intense pain that can, at some point, be converted into a new energy. The guilt and sadness of breaking up with someone goes nowhere but inside you and, if you let it, will do circuits of your mind for eternity. I’m with Auden on this one: ‘If equal affection cannot be / Let the more loving one be me.’

There are so many reasons a person might be single at thirty or forty or a hundred and forty and it doesn’t make them ineligible. Everyone has history. Take the time to hear theirs.

Sex with a total stranger is always weird, but staying in someone’s flat – in their bed sheets, in their bedroom, or having them stay in yours – is even weirder.

It is no person’s job to be the sole provider of your happiness. Sorry.

The perfect man is kind, funny and generous. He bends down to say hello to dogs and puts up shelves. Looking like a tall Jewish pirate with Clive Owen’s eyes and David Gandy’s biceps should be an added bonus and not a starting point.

Don’t fake orgasms. It does nobody any good at all. He is more than equipped to handle the truth.

The most exciting bit of a relationship is the first three months, when you don’t yet know if that person is yours. A great bit that comes right after that is when you know that person is yours. The bit that comes a few years after that is something I’ve never experienced. Apparently it’s not always exciting, but I’ve heard it’s the best.

Unless someone dies, if a relationship goes wrong, you somehow had a part to play in it. How simultaneously freeing and overwhelming it is to know this. Men aren’t bad, women aren’t good
. People are people and we all make, allow and enable mistakes.

Intimacy is the goal; laziness is not.

Let your friends abandon you for a relationship once. The good ones will always come back.

To lower your heart rate and drift off on nights when sleep feels impossible, dream of all the adventures that lie ahead of you and the distances you’ve travelled so far. Wrap your arms tightly round your body and, as you hold yourself, hold this one thought in your head: I’ve got you.

Thank you to my agent Clare Conville who shaped this book when it was just Post-its and pieces of stories and bits of ideas. I am so grateful to be represented by a friend whose kindness is as abundant as their skill.

Thank you to Juliet Annan who completely understood the book, and me, from our first meeting, whose instincts and insight have astounded me from start to finish. I couldn’t have asked for more good humour, experience and guidance; I couldn’t have dreamed up a better editor.

Thank you to Anna Steadman for her brilliant work on the book and her ongoing encouragement of my writing over the years.

Thank you to Poppy North, Rose Poole and Elke Desanghere at Penguin for their boundless energy, enthusiasm and collaboration. You are solid-gold members of the sisterhood.

Thank you to Marian Keyes and Elizabeth Day for reading the book early on and being so generous and big-hearted with their support for it.

Thank you to Sarah Dillistone, Will Macdonald and David Granger for taking a chance on a 22-year-old with a Billy Idol haircut and giving me a job that changed my life (I don’t think I’ll ever find one quite so fun).

Thanks to Richard Hurst for being the first person to encourage me to write, for his steadfast support and advice and for introducing me to punk rock when I was sixteen.

Thank you to Ed Cripps and Jack Ford who make me want to be funnier, just so I can make them laugh.

Everything I Know About Love: A Memoir

«There is no writer quite like Dolly Alderton working today and very soon the world will know it.”—Lisa Taddeo, author of #1 New York Times bestseller Three Women

“Dolly Alderton has always been a sparkling Roman candle of talent. She is funny, smart, and explosively engaged in the wonders and weirdness of the world. But what makes this memoir more than mere entertainment is the mature and sophisticated evolution that Alderton describes in these pages. It’s a beautifully told journey and a thoughtful, important book. I loved it.”—Elizabeth Gilbert, New York Times bestselling author of Eat, Pray, Love and City of Girls

The wildly funny, occasionally heartbreaking internationally bestselling memoir about growing up, growing older, and learning to navigate friendships, jobs, loss, and love along the ride

When it comes to the trials and triumphs of becoming an adult, journalist and former Sunday Times columnist Dolly Alderton has seen and tried it all. In her memoir, she vividly recounts falling in love, finding a job, getting drunk, getting dumped, realizing that Ivan from the corner shop might just be the only reliable man in her life, and that absolutely no one can ever compare to her best girlfriends. Everything I Know About Love is about bad dates, good friends and—above all else— realizing that you are enough.

Glittering with wit and insight, heart and humor, Dolly Alderton’s unforgettable debut weaves together personal stories, satirical observations, a series of lists, recipes, and other vignettes that will strike a chord of recognition with women of every age—making you want to pick up the phone and tell your best friends all about it. Like Bridget Jones’ Diary but all true, Everything I Know About Love is about the struggles of early adulthood in all its terrifying and hopeful uncertainty.

Everything I Know About Love viewers are all saying the same thing

The Dolly Alderton book adaptation is finally here

After months of waiting, the adaptation of Dolly Alderton’s Everything I Know About Love finally dropped in full on BBC iPlayer, and everyone is saying the same thing.

You could barely look at your newsfeeds during the summer of 2018 without the cover of Dolly’s much-loved memoir cropping up, which is why it made so much sense for the story to be picked up for TV.

As oppose to a straight-forward dramatisation, the BBC’s Everything I Know About Love introduces new characters Birdy (played by Bel Powley) and Maggie (Emma Appleton), alongside housemates Nell and Amara (Marli Siu and Aliyah Odoffin), fictional characters based on Alderton’s friends.

The four friends are muddling their way through their early 20s, pulling all-nighters and working dead end jobs, when Birdy gets a boyfriend, and the dynamic with childhood BFF Maggie is thrown into disarray.

Unsurprisingly, viewers have been loving the series, and have all been taking to social media to say the same thing.

As one person put it, «Watched the first two episodes of #EverythingIKnowAboutLove tonight and I’m already in love. I can tell this show will have a special part of my heart the way the book does.»

Another said, » I ADORED this» while another fan put, «Honestly, one of the best things I’ve watched in ages. Every single cast member shone. Especially the 4 leads. Incredible. Well done @dollyalderton.»

Well #EverythingIKnowAboutLove is absolutely stunning. The writing, the cast, the whole series is just a joy to watch.
It’s a real skill to write well for the screen and @dollyalderton is that good.
Go binge it on BBC iplayer.
LOVED IT 😍

Binge watching now and LOVING this. It’s so, so good. It’s making me hugely nostalgic for when I moved to London at 24 and felt like the world was at my feet and also v. v. grateful not to be 24 and single again. Plus I really want Emma Appleton’s fringe. https://t.co/23fn065DBW

Watched the first two episodes of #EverythingIKnowAboutLove tonight and I’m already in love. I can tell this show will have a special part of my heart the way the book does

Of course I stayed up until 2am watching #EverythingIKnowAboutLove and of course I’ve just watched the final episode on the train. Honestly, one of the best things I’ve watched in ages. Every single cast member shone. Especially the 4 leads. Incredible. Well done @dollyalderton. pic.twitter.com/KJNVRGt2jW

Well, we know what we’ll be watching tonight.

Everything I Know About Love is now streaming on BBC One and iPlayer.

Everything I know About Love, by Dolly Alderton

I know that love can be loud and jubilant…It can be dancing in the swampy mud and the pouring rain at a festival and shouting “YOU ARE AMAZING” over the band. It’s introducing them to your colleagues at a work event and basking in pride as they make people laugh and make you look lovable just by dint of being loved by them.

It’s laughing until you wheeze.

It’s waking up in a country neither of you have been in before.

It’s skinny-dipping at dawn. It’s walking along the street together on a Saturday night and feeling an entire city is yours.

It’s a big, beautiful, ebullient force of nature.

I also know that love is a pretty quiet thing.

It’s lying on the sofa together drinking coffee, talking about where you’re going to go that morning to drink more coffee. It’s folding down pages of books you think they’d find interesting.

It’s hanging up their laundry when they leave the house having moronically forgotten to take it out of the washing machine.

It’s saying ‘You’re safer here than in a car’ as they hyperventilate on an EasyJet flight to Dublin.

It’s the texts: ‘Hope your day goes well’, ‘How did today go?’, ‘Thinking of you today’ and ‘Picked up loo roll’.

I know that love happens under the splendour of moon and stars and fireworks and sunsets but it also happens when you’re lying on blow-up airbeds in a childhood bedroom, sitting in A&E or in the queue for a passport, or in a traffic jam.

Love is a quiet, reassuring, relaxing, pottering, pedantic, harmonious hum of a thing; something you can easily forget is there, even though its palms are outstretched beneath you in case you fall.

Dolly Alderton will be adapting her best-selling memoir Everything I Know About Love, a deeply personal and riotously funny account of surviving your 20s, into a television drama for the BBC.

In her award-winning book, the journalist, podcaster and columnist shares self-deprecating, and occasionally heartbreaking musings on love, friendship, relationships, and growing up as millennial. Quite often on the receiving end of these relatable tales of disastrous dates, breakups, heartache and humiliation, are a group of solid female friends to provide support and a sense of humour.

The series will follow two close female friends as they enter their first flat-share in London and navigate early adulthood. Speaking at the BBC Drama Preview Q&A this week, Alderton said: «I am so excited that my TV show Everything I know About Love is being announced today. It is a semi-fictionalised adaptation of my memoir of the same name.

«And it’s a messy, boisterous, joyful romantic comedy about two female best friends from childhood and what happens when they move into their first London house share and move into their first phase of adulthood, And I cannot stress enough how thrilled I am that it’s being made by Working Title and the BBC.»

Alderton added on Instagram: «I’ve been working with Working Title on the project for nearly four years and I am so grateful that this story has grown and developed in such safe hands. BBC drama has made extraordinary TV over the last year and it is an honour to be on their slate of upcoming shows. And before every boy I dated a decade ago messages me today to breezily ask how I am, it’s semi-fictionalised, so don’t panic fellas.»

Piers Wenger, controller of commissioning drama at the BBC, added: «I’m sure people will compare it to Sex and the City, or to Girls but the truth is Dolly is an author in her own right, and she is uproariously funny and it’s a very personal, and at times dark story, but with massive amounts of humour and emotional truths to it.»

Alderton gained recognition and a following of young female readers after launching her dating column for The Sunday Times, in which she relayed the highs and lows of being a single woman in her 20s, cataloguing cringeworthy dates, successful ones, and everything in between in her typically self-effacing way. She and fashion journalist Pandora Sykes recently concluded their popular culture and current affairs podcast The High Low after four years as hosts.

What will Everything I Know About Love be about?

Alderton is writing the screenplay, which will be directed by China Moo-Young. BBC’s synopsis reads: «Maggie and Birdy, besties since school, finally land in London to live it large, when the unexpected happens – dependable Birdy gets a steady boyfriend. A generous, funny, warm-hearted and uplifting Sex & The City for millennials which covers bad dates and squalid flat-shares, heartaches and humiliations, and, most importantly, unbreakable female friendships.»

Dolly Alderton’s hugely popular 2018 memoir, Everything I Know About Love, has been turned into a TV series, and it’s safe to say we’ve been counting down for the adaptation to drop on the BBC. The TV show is now airing on BBC One with all episodes also available to stream on BBC iPlayer if you want to binge the entire series.

Dolly previously shared the news of the release date alongside a short teaser trailer of the upcoming BBC TV series on her social media.

The trailer hints at all the drama to unfold as the four main characters, including best friends Birdy (Bel Powley) and Maggie (Emma Appleton), move into their first London house share. Queue raucous nights out, first dates, and awkward sexual encounters.

The trailer release came a couple of of months after the first photos of the upcoming adaptation were shared by the BBC in March 2022.

At the time, Alderton also shared a snap from the show on her personal Instagram account, adding in the caption: «It’s got my whole entire heart in it and I cannot wait for you to meet these four girls.»

Here’s everything you need to know about Everything I Know About Love, as well as whether a season 2 of the series is on the cards.

Everything I Know About Love: Latest updates

The seven-part drama will offer an unflinching account of surviving your 20s, inspired by award-winning writer and journalist Alderton’s wildly funny, and occasionally heart-breaking memoir of the same title.

In a new interview ahead of the series’ release, Dolly revealed just how much of main character Maggie is really based on her.

«Maggie is different from me – she’s a very heightened version of me,» Dolly told Time Out. «But there is a scene where she does drunk, naked dancing on her own after a night out; she looks so strange that my friends joked I must have done a dancing masterclass for her. My stage directions were what I’ve always thought when I catch myself dancing in the mirror: ‘She dances like a drunken jellyfish.'»

Previously chatting about the series when it was announced, Alderton said in a statement: «I am so excited that my TV show Everything I know About Love is being announced today. It is a semi-fictionalised adaptation of my memoir of the same name.»

«It’s a messy, boisterous, joyful romantic comedy about two female best friends from childhood and what happens when they move into their first London house share and move into their first phase of adulthood, And I cannot stress enough how thrilled I am that it’s being made by Working Title and the BBC.»

At the centre of the love story are childhood best friends – Birdy, played by The Morning Show‘s Bel Powley, and Maggie, played by The Witcher‘s Emma Appleton.

Previously, Dolly Alderton also shared an update with fans on Instagram, including behind-the-scenes photos of the cast and herself on set as filming came to an end.

Series

Everything I Know About Love has quickly become every millennial woman’s favourite TV series but is a second season on the horizon?

Warning: this article contains spoilers for Everything I Know About Love.

If you’ve been lapping up Everything I Know About Love, you’ll know there’s only been one thing on our mind. Well, there have been multiple things on our mind after making our way through the series – friendship break-ups, nostalgia, tone-deaf friends – but in this case, we’re talking about the future of the series.

The Dolly Alderton adaptation has proved to be a popular hit, so naturally, our minds have been left to wonder what the future of the series looks like. With only seven episodes to tear our way through, it seems like we were only just beginning to truly get to know the foursome before it all ended.

Although plans for a second series remain unconfirmed by the BBC, Alderton has revealed that she would love nothing more than another instalment of Everything I Know About Love.

Speaking at an event with RadioTimes, the author said: “I would love there to be a season two. The book is about your 20s; we were honing in on a very specific bit, but the difference between a 24-year-old and a 27-year-old is enormous. It’s like dog years.”

She continued, speaking about her hopes for the characters: “So, I feel like there are so many things that I want to know about the girls: I want to know more about Nell’s family; I want to know more about Amara’s love life. There are just so many things that I’m desperate to get into with all four of them. So I would love another series.”

Speaking to RadioTimes also, Bel Powley – who plays Birdy – revealed that the cast of Everything I Know About Love “all definitely want there to be a second series”. She said that “the first series is an introduction to these characters” and teased a little more about what she’d want for Birdy in season two.

She said: “There’s so many places the show could go. I don’t know what necessarily I want my character to be doing [in a second season]. I don’t know… break up with Nathan.”

Everything I Know About Love review: A giddy, nostalgic tribute to female friendship

Review at a glance

oving out of the flat I’d lived in since 2017, I found a near-empty Marc Jacobs perfume that had been kicked under the bed and left to fossilise. As the last drops came wheezing out of the bottle, they had the disorientating effect of transporting me back to my early twenties, complete with visceral hangover. I had a near-identical response when watching the opening episodes of Everything I Know About Love.

Semi-fictionalised from Dolly Alderton’s wildly successful memoir, which reached every-millennial-woman-on-the-tube-is-reading-this levels of ubiquity upon its release in 2018, it careers along in a giddy rush of nostalgia that is hard to resist if you came of age around the time that Kate Moss was flogging pansy-print tea dresses for Topshop.

The year, Alderton stand-in Maggie (Emma Appleton) tells us, is 2012. Waist belts are the scourge of women’s wardrobes, and “mediocre girls [are] making a name for themselves being moderately funny on the internet”. That’s narrator Maggie again, her voice both self-deprecating and entirely self-conscious. Along with childhood best friend Birdy (Bel Powley) and their university pals Amara (Aliyah Oddofin) and Nell (Marli Siu), she has just moved to a flat in Camden to pursue a dream of becoming a writer who is “amazing at comments and witticisms”. Will your enjoyment of the show be directly proportional to your tolerance for the main duo’s implicit Private School Energy? Probably, although Amara and Nell’s storylines do provide some counterbalance as the series goes on.

“Moving to Camden in 2012? Whatever you’re looking for, it’s already left,” points out one of Maggie’s love interests; although he is allegedly named ‘Street’ (“It’s where I was conceived”) and constantly wears a trilby, it is difficult not to snort in recognition. Maggie meets Street (a name designed to be said in inverted commas) on a train when her card is declined; he quotes Philip Larkin, later making her a CD of “actual music” and expounding his theories on how smartphones are altering the shapes of our brains.

That dependable, “plug adaptor” boyfriend eventually materialises in the form of Street’s flatmate Nathan (Ryan Bown). This new romance presents a stumbling block for Maggie and Birdy’s platonic love affair, with the former left feeling like the latter is “backing out of [their] relationship in slow motion, hoping we won’t realise.”

The adaptation really sings (and does a co-ordinated dance routine to boot) in these recognisable moments, which Alderton has written with warmth and affection for her twenty-something avatars. Are these characters often a bit insufferable? Undoubtedly, but perhaps accurately so. The joke’s normally on them, and if you can’t be a pretentious nightmare at 24, when can you?

Everything I Know About Love is on BBC One and BBC iPlayer from June 7

BBC’s Everything I Know About Love episode 1 review: the nostalgic series explores this relevant relationship conundrum

Series

BBC’s adaptation of Dolly Alderton’s bestselling novel Everything I Know About Love is here. It’s gloriously nostalgic – and somewhat confronting – according to one Stylist writer.

Warning: this article contains minor spoilers for the first episode of BBC’s Everything I Know About Love.

If you’re anything like us (a fan of BBC drama and Dolly Alderton), you’ll know that we’ve been patiently counting down the days until the premiere of Everything I Know About Love.

The bestselling novel has received the BBC series treatment, and with it, all of those beloved dynamics on the page have transformed into an on-screen delight. Premiering tonight (Tuesday 7 June), the first episode is everything we knew the series would be: gloriously nostalgic for every millennial woman, crammed full of 2012-appropriate music, outfits and all-too-relatable dating and romance horror stories.

We’re introduced first to Maggie (Emma Appleton), who is based on Alderton, a fun-loving 24-year-old that quickly discovers she’s out of money when attempting to buy multiple mini bottles of wine on the train back to London. She ends up befriending Street (Connor Finch), a cool guitar-wielding stranger who smokes with her in the train toilets and romantically kisses her goodbye on the Paddington platform.

She quickly trots back to her newfound Camden home, which she shares with childhood best friend Birdy (Bel Powley) and university pals Aliyah Odoffin (Amara) and Marli Siu (Nell).

“All the best nights happen when we just follow our noses,” Amara beams as the quartet stumble out onto the moonlit streets of Camden, ready for their first Friday night out. As Rizzle Kicks’ Down With The Trumpets blares, don’t be surprised if you consume the first half of this episode with a beaming smile on your face. It’s fun, it’s contagious and you can’t help but be swept up in a tidal wave of similar memories.

“She’s the best person in the world,” Maggie beams about Birdy, excited to play matchmaker for her best friend.

Later, though they have separate bedrooms, the friends share a bed after their night out. Like a married couple, Birdy lovingly spoons Maggie and it’s a routine that they’re used to; a kind of post-night out comfort they both adore. This isn’t just a run-of-the-mill friendship, it’s the kind of soulmate connection that many often only think is reserved for romantic relationships.

It’s what makes the rest of the episode – and really, the series – so tricky. When you have a bond with your best friend that’s much like a significant other, does it inevitably lead to someone getting disappointed?

The next day, while out leafleting as giant pancake stacks (yes, you read that correctly), Birdy receives a message from Nathan. She’s excited but Maggie refers to Nathan quickly as “fine”, “average” and “normal” – a collection of adjectives no woman really wants to hear when thinking about her future partner.

After getting ready for her first date with Nathan for a staggering three-and-a-half hours, Maggie gives Birdy the kind of pep talk that every friend craves. She tells her: “You are the sweetest, funniest person in any room. You on bad form is a level of charm most people don’t get to in their entire life.”

Of course, if you’ve read the book you’ll know what happens. Birdy and Nathan hit it off, forging a steady relationship that Maggie comes to loathe. But not entirely because of who Nathan is as a person. More so because of what that means for the two female friends and their own dynamic.

From this first episode, it’s obvious that Birdy – who at first couldn’t even imagine going on a date – is soon wrapped up in the bubble that comes with new love. Maggie embarrassingly stumbles in on Birdy and Nathan, and then exchanges excited whispers with Birdy on the stairs afterwards. She wants to hear all the details – like any good girlfriend does – and asks if they want to drink with her. Birdy, however, declines the offer and tells her about a brunch restaurant Nathan wants to take her to for a second date on the following day.

Even from this small interaction at the end of the first episode, you already know what’s to come for this pair. Maggie is fearfully clutching on to the longheld friendship that has coloured her youth while Birdy wants nothing more than to get lost in her new relationship, however mundane it may seem to Maggie.

While many of us can attest to feeling immense love for our friends, this BBC adaptation shines a light on how this can often lead to the biggest heartache of all – losing a close friend and having to change how you see them.

The BBC series doesn’t hit you with this confrontation outright; instead, it seamlessly weaves it in for you to consider at your leisure. Mostly, though, the series is packed full of relatability, immense nostalgia and the realisation that love comes in so many joyous forms.

The first episode of Everything I Know About Love premieres tonight on BBC One at 10.40pm, with episodes airing weekly and all available to stream on BBC iPlayer afterwards.

Meet the break-out stars of Dolly Alderton’s Everything I Know About Love

As the bestselling memoir hits TV screens, Amy Francombe rounds up the cast of the summer blockbuster about to go stratospheric

Dolly Alderton’s explosively funny memoir Everything I Know About Love was always going to be an instant hit. In fact, industry bodies were so sure of it that they optioned it to be turned into a television adaption before the book was even published in 2018.

Four years later and the book has scooped a prestigious National Book Award and sold 800,000 copies across 21 countries. Alderton, a former Sunday Times’ dating columnist and host of the beloved High Low podcast, was labelled the “voice of a generation” for her unflinching portrayal of the what it takes to survive your twenties. Award-winning author of Three Women Lisa Taddeo proclaimed: “There is no writer quite like Dolly Alderton working today and very soon the world will know it.” While journalist Elizabeth Day called the debut novel “a stone-cold classic”.

And now, fans will rejoice, the universally acclaimed book is set to bulldoze onto the silver screen as a BBC adaptation on Tuesday night (June 7)

“I never thought the book would be on screen,” Alderton has said. “But when there was interest in it, it made sense because it’s the most vivid period of my life; my twenties, the decade of wilderness and learning.”

Although the book, which is pegged as “Sex and the City for millennials”, will serve as inspiration, the series’ storyline will be slightly different.

Directed by China Moo-Young (Intergalactic, Harlots) and Julia Ford, Alderton spent six months pruning her memoir into seven 45 minute episodes. “There are so many layers of getting it right. You do your research, then you redraft the scripts, then you have a million meetings about props and what posters are on the walls of everyone’s bedroom,” the writer recalls about the process of bringing Everything I Know About Love to life.

The “raucous girl gang show” hits screens tomorrow night and promises to explore bad dates, squalid flat-shares, heartaches, humiliations and, most importantly, unbreakable female friendships. Our Evening Standard reviewer says, it’ll make you long for “your chaotic, mould-ridden flatshare days, corner shop rosé hangovers and all.”

These are its break-out stars.

Emma Appleton

Role: Maggie, a mischievous, playful 20-something who is based on Alderton

Age: 30

It’s set to be a meteoric year for Appleton who is also starring as Nancy Spungen, the girlfriend of the band’s bassist Sid Vicious, in Danny Boyle’s Pistol.

The model-turned-actress was born and raised in Witney, the Oxfordshire constituency of former Prime Minister David Cameron. She went to a local comprehensive school specialising in the visual and performing arts where she discovered a talent for acting. When she finished, she says, drama school didn’t seem a viable option.

Instead, Appleton was approached by a model agency and moved from the leafy Cotswolds to bustling London aged 19. She modelled for the likes of The Kooples, Victoria Beckham and Daks before leaving the runway in 2015. “I was at the point where it was not fulfilling me creatively, and I wanted more,” she told Elle magazine. “I worked with some wonderful people, but the negative times did taint it for me. I wasn’t very happy; it wasn’t good for my soul. I just wanted to act.”

It didn’t take long for the star to transition from modelling to acting and she bagged a part in short film Dreamlands the following year. Next came BBC Three drama Clique, about a gang of alpha girls at university, and support roles in Grantchester and The End of the F***ing World. A major turning point came with Traitors, the Channel 4 Second World War spy drama, in which she starred opposite TV golden girl Keeley Hawes.

Just a week after wrapping up on Pistol, Appleton started filming another lead part in Everything I Know About Love. She headed to Manchester, transforming from Spungen into Maggie, the character based on Alderton, for the seven-part BBC series. “[The casting process] was kind of like finding a boyfriend. It was so like when you meet someone that you like. I remember the first time that I saw Emma in a chemistry test, I just knew it was love. I just knew it had to be,” Alderton reveals.

Bel Powley

Will play: Birdy, also known as Belinda Benowitz – Maggie’s loving, open hearted childhood best friend

Age: 30

Might recognise from: The Morning Show, Informer, Diary of a Teenage Girl

Bel Powley rose to fame in 2015 as Minnie, the self-assured 15-year-old cartoonist who becomes sexually attracted to her mother’s boyfriend in coming-of-age tale, The Diary of a Teenage Girl. Since then, the west London-born actor, who recently became engaged to fellow actor Douglas Booth, has been carving out a reputation for herself as one of Hollywood’s ones to watch.

It’s no wonder – she comes from acting stock. Powley’s father is Mark Powley, who has starred in pretty much every well-loved British TV show from The Bill to Coronation Street through to Birds of a Feather and Casualty. Her mother is the former dancer turned casting director Janis Jaffa.

But you shouldn’t make the mistake of thinking that they opened all the doors for her. “I used to do a Saturday drama group called Young Blood Theatre Company with school-friends in west London – nothing to do with my mum and dad,” she told The Telegraph. “A casting director came to pick people out for a new BBC children’s series called MI High. She picked me, I auditioned, and I got the job.”

As for landing the role of a lifetime, the star is understandably excited. “I was a huge, huge fan of [Everything I Know About Love] when it came out and I think a lot of millennial women were. It feels really special. Everything in this show is completely relatable to me.”

Marli Siu

Will play: Nell, the more responsible and practical one in the friendship group

Age: 29

Might recognise from: Alex Rider, Our Ladies, Anna and the Apocalypse

Siu lived in Hong Kong until she was four years old, before moving to and growing up in north-east Scotland. Her mother is Scottish from Edinburgh and her father is Chinese.

“Where I grew up, there also wasn’t a CD shop or a clothes shop so on weekends we would get the train to Inverness to go to a shopping centre,” She said in a 2019 interview with NME. “It’s a privilege that people who live in the city don’t realise – that these things are not easily accessible to everyone.”

The young actress would take the hour long bus into Elgin every week to attend a youth theatre group. Eventually she joined the National Youth Theatre in Edinburgh permanently. After graduating from in 2017, Siu moved London to play Echo for 38 episodes of the CBBC web series Dixi.

It was here where she first started mining experiences to play her character in Everything I Know About Love. “I had a really similar experience where me and my best mate moved to London together and moved into a house in Walthamstow. There was damp all over the place and the shower was broken. Also, there were no windows in some of the bedrooms. But I was so excited to be there and, even if things were bad, I had my best mate and she would leave peanut butter cups outside my room on bad days. It was the experience of not having much else but your best mate. “

Her first major movie role came later that year, when she played Lisa in John McPhail’s zombie musical Anna and the Apocalypse and was named as one of Screen International’s 2018 Stars of Tomorrow.

Aliyah Odoffin

Will play: Amara, the first one to suggest a party if someone is upset

Might recognise from: Not much. yet

Everyone loves a newcomer. RADA-trained Odoffin will make her screen debut as Amara, one of Maggie and Birdy’s best mates, in tomorrow night’s new series.

“I think she’s a big dreamer and wants to make her dreams a reality so in that aspect, I see a lot of myself,” says Odoffin.

It’s true, having only previously starred in the short film Better Get Better (2020) and Hamlet, NW5 (2021) before landing a role in arguably be the biggest TV show of the summer, Odoffin certainly knows how to dream big.

Speaking of her time on set, Odoffin praised the collaborative nature of the cast and crew. “There was such a feeling of collaboration,” she said in an interview for the official press release, “it was such a joy working with everyone.” It’s a sentiment that Appleton has mirrored in an interview for The Guardian: “Aliyah’s been to RADA and has had training I’ve never had, so I was picking her brain – whereas I’ve worked with cameras and on TV … It just felt really collaborative.”

At the end of filming last December, Odoffin wrote on Instagram: “It was a joy coming into work everyday with you all, I am very blessed. I can’t wait for you all to meet these girls. Tell a friend to tell a friend!” Although the emerging actress may only 759 followers now, that number is set to skyrocket as the show grips the nation.

Everything I Know About Love is the ultimate love story about female friendship set to come to the BBC later this month – here’s everything you need to know about the series.

Based on the 2018 book by writer, journalist and podcaster Dolly Alderton, the upcoming heartfelt adaptation will soon be hitting our screens.

It focuses on a group of four 24-year-olds, who all move in together in 2012 Camden, as they settle into grown-up life.

The series hones in on Maggie, who is a semi-fictionalised version of Dolly and best friend Birdy, who have been joined at the hip since they were teenagers.

But with the pressures of work, romance, family and the reality of living in the big city soon hitting home, the pair find their friendship put to the test for the first time.

Directed by China Moo-Young, with Dolly acting as an executive producer, it promises to be one of the most popular series of the year.

Who is in the cast for Everything I Know About Love?

Emma Appleton as Maggie

Emma Appleton, 30, takes on the leading role of Maggie, who is based on Dolly herself.

Elsewhere, viewer will recognise her from playing Feef Symonds in Channel 4’s TV spy thriller series Traitors and Princess Renfri in the Netflix fantasy series The Witcher.

On what viewers can expect from the series, she said: ‘To laugh and some tears. They will want to go out with their friends and have dinner – just do all of the things you see in the show.’

Bel Powley as Birdy

Birdy aka Belinda is Maggie’s slightly ditzy but incredibly loyal best friend, and would do anything to make her happy. However, when she meets a new man, it soon leads to clashes between the previously inseparable pair.

Some fans will remember Bel, 30, from her CBBC days, where she starred alongside Danny John-Jules in the action television series M.I. High.

She was nominated for a British Independent Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer in 2015, for her role as Princess Margaret in A Royal Night Out. Bel also portrays Claire Conway on The Morning Show and recently announced her engagement to The Riot Club star Douglas Booth.

Marli Siu as Nell

Scottish actress Marli, plays Nell, who starts the story in a long-term relationship with her boyfriend Neil (Jordan Peters). However, it’s soon clear the newly qualified teacher isn’t having such a great time in the romance.

Marli has appeared in the films Anna and the Apocalypse and Our Ladies.

On television, she starred in the CBBC series Dixi and, as of 2020, in the Prime Video UK series Alex Rider. She was named one of Screen International’s 2018 Stars of Tomorrow.

Aliyah Odoffin as Amara

Amara often acts as the enabler to Maggie’s fun and chaotic lifestyle, as the pair remain the only single ones in the group.

She’s deeply intelligent but has left her dreams of pursuing a career in dance behind to work in property – will she end up managing to get back to her passion?

This is Aliyah’s first-ever TV role, after she graduated from Rada (Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts) in 2021 with a BA in Acting.

What is the plot?

The BBC synopsis reads: ‘The central love story of Everything I Know About Love is between childhood best friends Maggie and Birdy (Bel Powley: The Morning Show, Informer, Diary Of A Teenage Girl).

‘But it is also a raucous girl gang show, set in a 2012 London house-share inhabited by four girls – Maggie, Birdy and their mates from university, Amara (Aliyah Odoffin in her debut TV appearance) and Nell (Marli Siu: Alex Rider).

‘The series is an unflinching deep dive into bad dates, heartaches and humiliations and begs the question: can platonic love survive romantic love as we grow up?’

Everything I Know About Love release date and how to watch

Everything I Know About Love will offer seven 45 minute-long episodes for viewers to dive into.

Everything I Know About Love

Фото Everything i know about loveЭто шоу, основанное на мемуарах Долли Олдертон, когда ей было 20-ть, наполнено отличными вечеринками, ужасными мужчинами и истощенными банковскими счетами.

Writer Dolly Alderton and director China Moo-Young are our guests on our next Ask the Write Questions podcast recording 9th June. What would you like to ask them? Email us at writersroom@bbc.co.uk or add your questions in the blog comments below.

Created and adapted for television by Dolly Alderton and inspired by her own wildly funny, occasionally heart-breaking, internationally bestselling memoir of the same name, Everything I Know About Love will give an unflinching account of surviving your 20s.

The central love story of Everything I Know About Love is between childhood best friends Maggie (Emma Appleton: Pistol, The Witcher, Traitors) and Birdy (Bel Powley: The Morning Show, Informer, Diary Of A Teenage Girl). But it is also a «raucous girl gang show», set in a 2012 London house-share inhabited by four girls – Maggie, Birdy and their mates from university, Amara (Aliyah Odoffin in her debut TV appearance) and Nell (Marli Siu: Alex Rider) The series is an unflinching deep dive into bad dates, heartaches and humiliations and begs the question: can platonic love survive romantic love as we grow up?

Dolly Alderton (Author, Screenwriter, Executive Producer) introduces the show below.

Watch the trailer for Everything I Know About Love

Could you summarise Everything I Know About Love?

It’s a romantic comedy drama about friendship and a coming-of-age story. Plus it’s a raucous girl gang show.

What does it feel like to see the show come to life?

Amazing, but it’s a cumulative and quite protracted experience, which I think I hadn’t quite realised. I thought when people say it’s shooting for four months that it’s all sort of done in four months. But there are so many layers of getting it right. You do your research, then you redraft the scripts, then you have a million meetings about props and what posters are on the walls of everyone’s bedroom. Then you’re talking about music, then you’re talking about the music you can’t afford which then has to be replaced with other music. Then you are talking about the colour of someone’s hair in the grade. So it’s amazing watching it come to life but it’s not a Stars in Your Eyes transformation. That’s a dated reference! I thought your script goes into the sliding doors and then comes out as a TV show two minutes later. But it doesn’t!

Talk us through the story from the writing stage?

In terms of the full journey, it was optioned years ago before I finished the book. We developed it for a good couple of years and I was working out what elements of the book I wanted to put on screen and fictionalise because the book actually covers my whole life.

After it was commissioned, I wrote it all in six months which I thought was a really long time! I never thought the book would be on screen, I was just writing a memoir but when there was interest in it, it made sense because it’s the most vivid period of my life; my twenties, the decade of wilderness and learning. I’m only 33 but I look back and think of it as the most extraordinary time of my life so far. It made sense that it would be a good story to put on camera because it wasn’t just about me, it was about this chorus of friends working out what kind of women we wanted to be when we intersected with the adult world.

What were the most important elements for you to keep?

First and foremost was the central drama of two best girlfriends who’d grown up together and their story as a romantic story. By which I mean looking at the ups and downs of their relationship with the same kind of focus and lens as you would in a romantic comedy. So, elevating that friendship to a place of premium drama that’s normally reserved just for romantic relationships. So looking at that being the driving force of the story was the thing I most wanted to preserve. I also wanted to capture that girl gang that I feel resonates with a lot of people who have read my book. That sense of women coming together, making a home together, being enmeshed in each other’s domestic lives, being naughty, being mistreated and being mischievous together.

What do you think fans will love most about it?

Something that I really wanted to give to the readers of the book who were coming to the TV show was to retain that kind of millennial experience and millennial nostalgia that I knew lots of people enjoyed in the book. It’s obviously just so delicious to put on screen and so fun to flashback to the noughties with two teenage girls putting hair gems in or listening to Hear’Say. I also wanted to hone in on what those cultural touchstones were as they are so recognisable for our generation and hopefully for younger audiences. It will be a nice throwback. I can’t believe that my childhood is now a piece of nostalgia.

What do the people who inspired the story think about the TV series?

The people who inspired the story are my best mates. They miraculously decided to carry on talking to me and being friends with me even after I wrote about them relentlessly for years. I’m so lucky and they are really happy. Imagine if they weren’t happy, I wouldn’t have a TV show.

What was it like walking on set and seeing those locations come to life?

I was just so, so excited. Charlotte, who’s our Production Designer, just completely nailed this hinterland of somewhere between student and adulthood in design where it’s kind of nearly nice, but it’s also mixed in with hangovers from adolescence and bizarre kitsch findings like a light in the shape of a baguette on the kitchen wall, which I never quite understood. Plus memorabilia from nights out; stolen road signs and fish and chip shop signs. It’s quite disgusting living with a bunch of girls in their twenties. I really wanted that. Charlotte decided there would never be a radiator shown in our house that wouldn’t have some ratty pants hanging off it.

Tell us about the casting process?

It was kind of like finding a boyfriend. It was so like when you meet someone that you like. I remember the first time that I saw Emma (Appleton) in a chemistry test, I just knew it was love. I just knew it had to be.

Tell us about the shooting locations?

What is the universal appeal of the show?

It doesn’t matter where you are in the world, everyone knows or remembers what it is like to have your heart broken. Everyone knows what it is to lose someone really close to you who you thought you were going to spend your life with. Everyone knows what it is to try and work out what kind of adult you want to be and feel kind of lost in the adult world. I also think it provides a nice story; we always knew it was going to take place in 2012 and wanted to tell it like a period piece, for want of a better word. We wanted an episode about the Olympics in London. We wanted an episode about the Diamond Jubilee. We wanted an episode about the launch of dating apps.

What can audiences expect from Everything I Know About Love?

They will laugh, cry and ring their best friend immediately.

Describe Everything I Know About Love in three emojis?

The dancing lady. The heart. Then the wine glass. 💃❤️🍷

LOVED IT. Phenomenal. Only complaint is that I’ll probably have to wait a while for her to come out with another book. I hope that happens, because this is the best one I’ve read in a long while. Super solid and relatable moral at the end. Loved the message and her writing style is fantastic. Also enjoyed her quirky british lingo, some of which I wasn’t familiar with and found very educational and entertaining. Just added to the loveliness of the book!

A longtime Twitter follower and listener of The High Low, I read this book because I love Dolly Alderton. I ended up gobbling it. Never, ever, have I read something so relatable I often felt as though I were reading my own diary, becing so familiar with so many feelings and experiences that Dolly so beautifully describes. I didn’t know it was possible to feel so connected to an author, simply by scanning pages. Read this book. Give it to all of your girlfriends, graduates, and every misguided gal you know it’s a gorgeous portrayal of the reality of growing up and growing into yourself.

Everything I Know about Love Book Review

As soon as Dolly Alderton opened her memoir with a chapter on teenage MSN romances, we were hooked. This is a book that speaks to millennials, after all! Do you remember the dial tone as you logged into Messenger in the hope of catching our crushes online? We sure do. How about having family members yell at you because they needed to use the phone. Yup! First kisses, adolescent dramas and wild hedonistic nights are all covered but so too are tales of adult heartbreak. It’s a memoir that explores both the light and dark sides of love. But more importantly, it is witty and at times hysterical.

Alderton lays down the importance of love in many aspects of life, this isn’t just a story about a girl standing in front of a boy and asking him to love her. In exploring her connection to and love of her friends, she touches on greater, often deeper relationships and begins to explore the female bond and feminism.

A Love Handbook

We found that this book often feels like a handbook, a guide for how to be at ease with yourself and appreciate the people and the loves that you have. It’s certainly something we’ve found ourselves digging into time and again, searching for little nuggets of advice. In her honest writing, Alderton manages to capture things we’ve all felt at some point and articulates them in the most humorous way. In being so open she removes shame from things we’ve felt and instead reframes them as hilarious anecdotes.

On drinking she says “The gap between who you were on a Saturday night, commandeering an entire pub garden by shouting obnoxiously about how you’ve always felt you had at least three prime-time sitcom scripts in you, and who you are on a Sunday afternoon, thinking about death and worrying if the postman likes you or not, becomes too capacious.” Oh yes, we’ve been there.

We can’t imagine anyone reading this book and not imagining that they’re now best friends with Dolly. The sold out shows that ran across the UK after the launch certainly attest to that. We’d be lying if we said we weren’t one of the many that has a UK Times membership just to read her column or that we didn’t tune into her weekly podcast The High Low. It feels less like a brand Alderton’s purposefully built, and more like a cult we’re all willingly and eagerly signing up to.

Star rating

10/10

Fellow hopeless romantics will revel in this glorious romp of a memoir. We challenge you to read it and not find a Dolly that resonates with you. We have to give it ten out of ten. Not only because of the beautiful, honest writing but also because we know we’ll continue to come back to it. We’ll seek solace in her words. “Love is a quiet, reassuring, relaxing, pottering, pedantic, harmonious hum of a thing; something you can easily forget is there, even though its palms are outstretched beneath you in case you fall.”.

Everything I Know About Love creator Dolly Alderton has revealed some of the BBC adaptation’s songs differed from her picks, due to the cost of acquiring rights to some of the music she wanted.

The series aired its first episode on Tuesday night, with many fans having already binged the whole thing on BBC iPlayer.

Telling the story of a group of four 24-year-olds, who all move in together in 2012 Camden, as they settle into grown-up life, viewers have been quickly taken in by the series.

It hones in on Maggie (Emma Appleton), based on Dolly herself, and best friend Birdy (Bel Powley), also inspired by Dolly’s real-life best friend.

Something else which has gone down well with those giving it a watch is the brilliant tracklist

When complimented on the tunes, creator and executive producer Dolly admitted they weren’t all planned to be included.

At a recent screening, she shared: I knew nothing about production and licensing and I remember when China [Moo-Young, director] first looked at the script, she said, “Now, these Rolling Stones songs, I’m afraid I’m gonna have to break your heart.”

Music supervisor Ian Cook luckily worked his magic on the needle drops and helped Dolly come up with some other brilliant alternatives.

‘He knew how important this music was,’ said continued. ‘I was literally alone with the scripts, month after month listening to those songs over and over again, drinking my George Clooney tequila.

‘They were so baked into the scenes for me, so I was so heartbroken to think about losing them.’

She went on to detail how she decided on replacements: ‘Basically for every song we couldn’t afford, Ian would give me a Spotify playlist and say, “Here’s what we can afford.”

Dolly explained the first dancing scene was meant to be soundtracked by Marvin Gaye’s classic hit, Gotta Give It Up.

But she was quickly informed they wouldn’t be able to afford to use it.

Instead, it was replaced by Down With The Trumpets by Rizzle Kicks, laughing as she noted: ‘It was weirdly, a total tonal match.

‘It was kind of heartbreak initially, and then it actually forced us to be really creative and I quickly understood the things that you can’t put in.

‘Hip hop was out, Motown, out, Rolling Stones, out. But it made us find even better [songs] and make unusual decisions.’
