Extra Life Game Day Survival Guide
This year, thousands of PlayStation gamers answered the call to help their local Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals through Extra Life, a nonprofit organization that raises funds for children’s hospitals and the medical treatment, programs and charitable care that is provided to kids in their communities.
Today is a huge day for children’s hospitals across North America, as our 6th Annual Extra Life main event begins at 8am. For 25 hours we will celebrate the social impact of gamers who have been fundraising for their local CMN Hospitals. And you’ll be able to watch it all live.
Not registered? Not a problem. It only takes a couple of minutes to sign up, hit the moms and best pal up for a few dollars for the kids, and then celebrate with us.
While there is a lot of talk of streaming your game play and a few elaborate physical events popping up all over the place, most people participate from the comfort of their own living room. Now I don’t have any scientific data on this, but I’d be willing to bet a measurable percentage of our Extra Life Heroes participate in their underwear. Try getting that mental image out of your head.
Before we get into the best practices in surviving Extra Life, you might want to know more about this charitable initiative and where it came from. Quite simply this whole crazy thing was born in memory of my friend, Tori. She would have been 21 years old this year. Here’s her story, and that of Extra Life for those wanting to learn more.
Now that you’re registered, here’s a suggested plan of attack for your personal Extra Life marathon.
This is going to be an incredible weekend for the generous PlayStation community as nearly 30,000 gamers stand up, or more accurately sit down to do what they love For The Kids. Too many diamonds
Why? And suggestions.
You guys do give us a fair amount of chances for us to earn/get diamonds. But I think that when we watch the videos depending on the time; example, if it’s a 30 sec vid than it’d be 10 diamonds. If it’s a 10 sec vid than 5. Because the reason I’m suggesting this is because, the prices for the diamonds are way to high in the story. I had to wait till my story finished and came back in the span of about half a year to earn up close to 500 diamonds. After I played a couple episodes of part 3 of my story, I was only down to 14 diamonds. Because it’s unfair it’s like to make the right decision that could effect something that you know will happen in the future will kill that option because you won’t have enough diamonds for it. And even with watching the vids, it’s still not enough. So that’s why I recommend higher diamonds for watching the vid. And also we should get a option when we want to make a choice to watch a video to do it. Or the price shouldn’t be above 20. Or even 15. And we should start out with at least however many tickets are left in our story or at least half. I’m not trying to change the game completely, these are merely just suggestions that I know would make the game go to a 4.8 star rating to a 5 star and lots of positive reviews and more people. Thank you.

So I’ve been playing this game for a while. The choices are expensive and there are a ton of them, but at least you can get 4 diamonds per chapter and 20 per day for watching videos. And realistically the diamond choices barely affect the overall story other than maybe one phrase from another character or just an extra scene so that’s nice. Plus those scenes are A++ and I love them usually, even when I have to pay extra to continue the scene making the scene realistically cost 75 diamonds instead of 21. Up until this most recent update, I haven’t had a problem with the app like at all. I’d have even given it a 5 star rating.
But there used to be a way to use old diamond outfits for outfit choices. If at the beginning of the chapter you opened the closet and put on one of your purchased outfit, you could later choose it and it would act as if you’d chose a diamond outfit instead of the boring normal one. But they changed it and now you either have to buy an expensive new outfit or wear the boring old outfit. You can’t even change into an already purchased outfit without the benefit of the characters complementing you. It’s super annoying since there used to be a way to use those outfits more than once. Now it’s just pointless to buy them because the outfits barely affect the story.

When playing Dungeons & Dragons, it’s not uncommon to finish up a campaign with your characters saving the world or rescuing innocents. It seems many adventures you watch on twitch.tv/dnd have some variation of that theme set in a fantasy world… but fans can have a strong, positive impact in this world, too.
Extra Life is a charity organization D&D has been happy to be involved with since 2013, where gamers stream themselves playing together with the express purpose of driving donations to the Children’s Hospitals Network.
For 2018, we’re expanding our livestreaming and other efforts and encouraging fans to help drive even more donations.

Extra lives
This is the 13th step out of 16 of the Gamedev Phaser tutorial. You can find the source code as it should look after completing this lesson at Gamedev-Phaser-Content-Kit/demos/lesson13.html.
We can make the game enjoyable for longer by adding lives. In this article we’ll implement a lives system, so that the player can continue playing until they have lost three lives, not just one.
New variables
Add the following new variables below the existing ones in your code:
These respectively will store the number of lives, the text label that displays the number of lives that remain, and a text label that will be shown on screen when the player loses one of their lives.
Defining the new text labels
Defining the texts look like something we already did in the score lesson. Add the following lines below the existing scoreText definition inside your create() function:
Making our text styling DRY
We can now use this variable when styling our text labels — update your code so that the multiple instances of the text styling are replaced with the variable:
This way changing the font in one variable will apply the changes to every place it is used.
The lives handling code
To implement lives in our game, let’s first change the ball’s function bound to the onOutOfBounds event. Instead of executing an anonymous function and showing the alert right away :
We will assign a new function called ballLeaveScreen ; delete the previous event handler (shown above) and replace it with the following line:
We want to decrease the number of lives every time the ball leaves the canvas. Add the ballLeaveScreen() function definition at the end of our code:
Instead of instantly printing out the alert when you lose a life, we first subtract one life from the current number and check if it’s a non-zero value. If yes, then the player still has some lives left and can continue to play — they will see the life lost message, the ball and paddle positions will be reset on screen and on the next input (click or touch) the message will be hidden and the ball will start to move again.
When the number of available lives reaches zero, the game is over and the game over alert message will be shown.
Events
You have probably noticed the add() and addOnce() method calls in the above two code blocks and wondered how they differ. The difference is that the add() method binds the given function and causes it to be executed every time the event occurs, while addOnce() is useful when you want to have the bound function executed only once and then unbound so it is not executed again. In our case, on every outOfBounds event the ballLeaveScreen will be executed, but when the ball leaves the screen we only want to remove the message from the screen once.

Next steps
Lives made the game more forgiving — if you lose one life, you still have two more left and can continue to play. Now let’s expand the look and feel of the game by adding animations and tweens.
