Легкая история о беззаботной жизни подростков, которые впервые влюбляются. Зрители смогут проследить весь путь первого трепетного чувства, начиная от «бабочек», заканчивая предсказуемой драмой и разбитыми сердцами. Их чувства на экране отражены максимально точно: взгляды глаза в глаза, стеснительные и неловкие действия, признания в любви.
Действие сюжета происходит во времена тяжелого финансового кризиса в 2008 году. Помимо чувств, эмоций и взаимоотношений между друг другом и окружающими, подростки и их родители должны приспособиться к новой реальности и начать решать возникающие из-за этого проблемы.
История детей противопоставлена истории родителей. Они пытаются справиться с последствиями наступившего кризиса, а также сохранить свои отношения и не потерять доверие детей. Каждая семья по-своему реагирует на стремления наследников и их романтические увлечения.
Зрителям будет любопытно увидеть Хиро Файнса-Тиффина в нетипичном для него амплуа. Во франшизе «После» он был уверенным в себе, наглым и даже взбалмошным юношей, который не привык контролировать эмоции. Здесь его персонаж довольно стеснительный и мягкий, который готов на все ради своей возлюбленной и не позволяет себе обидеть ее.
Главную роль в фильме сыграл Хиро Файнс-Тиффин. Он запомнился зрителям по ролям юного Волан-де-Морта в серии фильмов о Гарри Поттере, а также Хардина в триквеле «После».
Съемки преимущественно проходили в США, штате Калифорния, Лос-Анджелесе. Режиссером, продюсером и сценаристом выступил А. Дж. Эдвардс. В его карьере это третья работа, где он стал постановщиком, и первая продюсерская.
Фильм изначально должен был выйти в мае 2021 года, но из-за пандемии и финансовых трудностей лента появилась в мировом прокате только спустя год. Премьеру в США представили зрителям 17 июня. Российская премьера запланирована на 7 июля.
Известная актриса и обладательница «Золотой пальмовой ветви» Дайан Крюгер снялась в фильме в качестве одного из родителей главного героя. Она также выступила в качестве продюсера ленты.
Изначально музыку к фильму должен был написать Ричард Рид Пэрри, участник группы Arcade Fire, удостоенной премии «Грэмми». Партнеры фильма приняли решение заменить его на Джорджа Каллиса, который ранее работал над музыкой для франшизы «После».

Чего точно не ожидаешь, так это социальной драмы о буднях среднего класса в период глобального экономического кризиса, также именуемого «великой рецессией». Времени, когда миллионы американцев остались без крыши над головой и средств к существованию и, в общем-то, всем было не до романтики.

Тем не менее в новой работе А.Дж. Эдвардса, автора тихого шедевра «Кто в пятницу родился», именно любовь выступает той самой спасительной движущей силой, способной вытащить людей из состояния перманентной депрессии. Вряд ли Эдвардс предполагал, что его измышления по итогу окажутся пророческими — и тем не менее «Первая любовь» открыто говорит на темы, которые актуальны здесь и сейчас. И которые при всем желании не стоит игнорировать. В мире, где все так легко покупается и продается, мы начали забывать о том, что любовь (в отличие от счета на кредитной карте) не имеет лимита — при правильном направлении потенциал этого ресурса может быть поистине безграничен. И если Джиму и Энн чувство помогает обрести себя, то Грегу и Кей она помогает не потерять друг друга.
Парадоксально, но за философскими размышлениями и душевными терзаниями в ленте почти не нашлось места простой романтике — хайлайты отношений главных героев утопают в монтажных склейках, оставляя множество недосказанностей, да и попросту отказывая зрителю в заслуженной порции сантиментов. Для своего жанра «Первая любовь» удивительно депрессивное и даже пресное кино, практически полностью лишенное магии. Увы, как показывает практика, подобная подмена ожиданий редко когда оценивается аудиторией по достоинству, даже если за серой картинкой скрывается вполне себе вдумчивое и важное режиссерское высказывание.

Фильм не советую. Сюжета никакого, актеры будто просто сценарий читают, ещё и снято отвратительно. Сами актеры очень классные, в других фильмах они сыграли лучше.
Фильм ужасный. Не интересный, скучный и без сюжета. Актёры каменные. Непонятно что происходит. Провалы в сюжете. Очень жаль потраченных денег. Даже с пивом не потянет, только под водку

Пошел в кинотеатр, и ушел на 30 минуте. Скучен с первой секунды, когда начинаются титры на фоне. Нет ни актерской игры, ни операторской работы, Все отталкивает.

В январе 2021 года в Китае поступил в продажу обновленный китайский паркетник Haval H2, который попутно сменил название на Chulian, переводится как «первая любовь», причем аналогичные машины, которые будут продаваться в России, скорее всего, получат название First Love!
Недавно новый кроссовер был замечен в России, очевидно проходит сертификацию, чтобы получить ОТТС.

Обзор
Модель Хавал First Love 2021 года позиционируется в качестве молодежного кроссовера, который явно решил замахнуться на более достойные объемы продаж по всему миру. Залогом будущего успеха китайцы посчитали переход машины на новую платформу, не забыв заодно кардинальным образом обновить экстерьер и салон внедорожника.
Тележка с не менее оригинальным названием L.E.M.O.N. в будущем обещает этому паркетнику гибридные двигатели, а пока единственным доступным вариантом остается турбочетверка с «роботом».
При этом китайский кроссовер укрупнился до 4472 мм в длину (+137 мм) при колесной базе в 2700 мм. (+140 мм), что неудивительно, так как на этой же платформе строился более статусный Haval H6 2021 года.
В отличие от последнего, молодежному паркетнику Haval First Love (Chulian) определили заднюю полузависимую подвеску вместо многорычажки, что по замыслу китайских инженеров не должно сказаться на комфорте эксплуатации сугубо «городского» внедорожника.
Кузов
Китайский Chulian (First Love 2021) предлагает несколько довольно ярких комплектаций с необычными оттенками декоративных элементов кузова. Внешне новый кроссовер мало чем напоминает своего предшественника, к тому же он несет на себе новую фирменную стилистику оформления передней части с огромной радиаторной решеткой и хитроумными LED-полосками ходовых огней.
Корпус кроссовера стал шире, но чуть ниже, а колеса сохранили размерность в 17-18 дюймов, поменяв при этом дизайн и палитру цветов (доступны двухцветные варианты литых дисков).
Салон
Cалон Haval Chulian (First Love) 2021 модельного года абсолютно новый, выполненный в очень модном сегодня минималистичном стиле с дисплеями на передней консоли и почти отсутствующими физическими органами управления бортовыми системами.
Исключение – мультируль и узкая полоска кнопок настройки «климата» под центральным экраном. Даже центральный тоннель на паркетнике оформлен крайне скромно, поскольку фактически имеет лишь шайбу. Интересной деталью выступает небольшой гаджет, вмонтированный в переднюю левую стойку.
Он полагается модели уже в начальной версии, а его назначение – слежение за мимикой (читай – усталостью) водителя. Также в базе разработчики предлагают электроприводы передних кресел и двухцветную кожаную обивку салона.
Технические характеристики и начинка
Haval First Love 2021 (Chulian) в китайской спецификации получает пока единственный четырехцилиндровый турбомотор объемом 1.5 литра. С этой 150-сильной (220 Нм) установкой работает семиступенчатый «робот», передающий крутящий момент на переднюю ось.
В перспективе – выпуск полноприводных гибридных паркетников с отдельным электрическим мотором на задней колесной оси. В зависимости от модификаций в оснащении авто также могут присутствовать:

В январе 2021 года на заводе Haval в Тульской области собрали первый тестовый экземпляр кроссовера Chulian/First Love 2021 года, который, по всей видимости, будет использован для прохождения сертификации и получения ОТТС. О сроках начала серийного производства новинки в России пока не сообщается, как и о возможных ценах. Пока ориентиром выступает китайский прайс, согласно которому паркетник оценивается в 89-115 тысяч юаней или в 1,00-1,33 млн. рублей.

«First Love» is an earnest but unremarkable romance wrapped around an intelligent and sometimes powerful story of the destruction that capitalism inflicts on middle-class American families.
«First Love» is written and directed by A.J. Edwards, a protege of visionary spiritualist Terrence Malick who has made two films in a Malickian vein («The Better Angels» and «Age Out»), but this third effort is more of a straightforward ensemble drama. Set in the aftermath of the financial collapse of late 2008 during George Bush’s second term, it follows one American family, the Albrights, as they try to survive and readjust to drastically reduced economic prospects. The father, Glenn, gets laid off from the financial sector and seems unable to accept that he might never again have a job as prominent as the one that was taken from him. His wife Kay («Better Angels» costar Diane Kruger, who coproduced here) eventually offers to take a second job and runs headlong into the barrier of her husband’s pride.
The dialogue that articulates the Albright’s tight situation is often bland and oversimplified, but it’s still a (pleasant) shock to see an American feature film dealing with the financial collapse in something other then genre-based metaphors (as, for example, the excellent crime thriller «Killing Them Softly» did).
When Kay goes to the bank to try to get a loan, the bank officer looks at her application and wants to know if her husband is sick, and if not, why he isn’t working. «Even a minimum-wage job would look better on the record than things are now,» he says.
We later learn that friends and family members have largely abandoned the Albrights in their time of distress. There’s a paranoid intimation that people have stopped answering their phone calls because they don’t want to hear about their suffering or risk being asked for money. When the priest at their church says, «Where is the pleasure in life that is unmixed with sorrow?» it sounds less like a balm than a cop-out. «This place is a box,» Glenn grouses after the family moves into a more affordable place.
The big problem with this movie is that it focuses more than half of its running time on a vanilla romance between Glenn and Kay’s teenage son Jim (Hero Fiennes Tiffin, son of director Martha Fiennes and nephew of actors Ralph and Joseph Fiennes) and his classmate Ann (Sydney Park). The film is at its most Malick-like when focusing on the young couple, but not in a good way. Edwards, cinematographer Jeff Bierman, and editor Alec Styborski serve up lyrical montages and dreamy, silent-with-music imagery as if hoping to capture some of the mysterious magic of the central love stories in Malick’s «The New World» and «To the Wonder.»
But there’s no evident substance or complexity to either character, and the beats are so familiar as to seem obligatory (including the mandatory breakup midway through). It often seems as if the filmmaking is trying to add a ballast. Jim and Ann vacuuming up the film’s running time also means that the more grounded and complicated struggles of the parents and their adult relatives and colleagues don’t get the scrutiny they deserve.
And it doesn’t do the movie any favors that the interracial/cross-cultural aspects of the relationship go largely unexplored, save for a brief exchange of Spanish in their first conversation in a school hallway. Nor does the film have much to say about the discrepancy between how the two families live, financial crash or no financial crash, and how the gap between haves and have-nots might be a part of the larger story of the crash.
The untapped potential here is considerable, though the cinematography and performances ensure that the film remains watchable. Kruger and Donovan are particularly effective in closeups where contradictory feelings play across their faces. (Glenn’s smiling-through-the-pain expression as he’s being laid off is perfect: he’s still the model employee, trying to prove that the company was right to have hired him even as they discuss his severance package.) And Diane Venora is smashing in a small role as Kay’s distressed and embittered aunt, who raised Kay after her mother abandoned her but now has to be put into a home because she’s no longer capable of living by herself. This is a good movie with stirring passages that suffers mainly from a lack of self-knowledge. It concentrates on things we’ve seen a million times when it could have focused on things that American movies never have the guts to show us.

А разработчики из Akabaka сделали из этих ужасов анимешных девушек. На данный момент в Sucker for Love доступно три красавицы. Главная цель игры — добиться от них поцелуя. Главная задача — дожить до этого момента.
Протагонист
Он же «Дорогой», он же «Дорогуша», он же «Пес». Полигамный самец, что мечтает поцеловать всех Древних Богов. Ради этой цели он тратил все свои деньги на покупку оккультных предметов. Со временем ему в руки попала книга, что сделала все его мечты явью.
L’neta
Ктулху, которого превратили в девушку. Л’нета — милая, но очень ревнивая девушка. Её ритуалы самые простые, и в них нельзя совершить ошибку. За её пробуждением следует полное уничтожение человечества. Но поцелуй в щупальца того стоит! Именно она доступна для свидания в Dread X collection.
Король в Желтом
Капризная и эгоистичная госпожа. Эстр может появляться только там, где проникает свет с её планеты-звезды Каркосы. Её ритуалы — это театральные постановки на староанглийском. Если в них совершить ошибку, то она мгновенно убьет протагониста. Любимое развлечение Эстр — кража парней у Л’неты.
Ньянлахотеп
Тетушка Ньян-Ньян (официальное обращение) прибыла в реальность Протагониста, чтобы разлучить его со своими племянницами. Она делает это ради предотвращения преждевременного уничтожения реальности. Здесь есть хоррор
Удивительно, но после превращения в анимешных девушек лавкрафтовские ужасы сохранили свою суть. Это все еще космические монстры! Они без колебаний убивают и уродуют Протагониста. После пробуждения они с легкостью уничтожают саму реальность. Просто в этой игре вы с ними флиртуете.
Яркие цвета игры создают отличную основу для хоррора. После пребывания в ярко-розовой комнате вид сорванной кожи, оторванных конечностей и подбирающихся теней, пугает своей неожиданностью.
Diagnosis
Sucker for Love отлично работает и в качестве симулятора свиданий и хоррора. Персонажи отлично прописаны, а актеры озвучки проделали великолепную работу. Это красивая и проработанная игра, которая умеет веселить и пугать. И стоит она всего 259 рублей в Steam.
Вероятно, у игры будет продолжение. Богинь ведь 50, и всех их надо поцеловать!

Haval засветил салон кроссовера First Love на официальных фото
На изображениях салона видно, что кроссовер оснащён проекционным дисплеем на лобовое стекло, цифровой приборной панелью и широкоформатным сенсорным дисплеем мультимедиа. Отсутствует традиционный рычаг трансмиссии, функции которого выполняет вращающийся селектор, впереди него расположился слот для беспроводной зарядки смартфона.
Пока всё ещё непонятна роль First Love в линейке бренда: китайские СМИ полагают, что он идёт на смену H2, по другой версии, оба автомобиля будут продаваться параллельно. Однако, судя по опциям и отделке «под розовое золото», вряд ли First Love можно считать полноценным преемником H2.

With one exception Song Han Hee who played Yoo Sin Bi / Mikael was actually pretty good and impressed me in her role, she reminded me a bit of IU.

A turning point in the Korean LGBTQI+ film industry? Kinda.
I was not having high expectations for this series, to be honest, but I am glad it could prove its worth to me and hopefully other viewers too. The Korean LGBTQ+ film industry is growing and improving its series in terms of production and duration., which is noticeable when watching this drama. It´s definitely a good decision to watch “First Love, Again”. In the following, I try to justify my recommendation briefly and concisely.
PRODUCTION
Nothing extra outstanding nor something they failed in. However, it gets closer to the normal high standard of Korean dramas. One thing I´d like to highlight is that the use of light and shadows in this series was on-point. Compared to other Korean LGBTQI+ series the dialogues and monologues have been better in both quantity and quality. The story feels less rushed than usual, and I am sure we can expect similar dramas to be produced soon.
PLOT
The plot is, I mentioned this in the heading, unique and exciting to watch. I especially enjoyed the soft pacing and the comedy side of a more serious story. Both characters seem to not be written as extraordinary people, but rather normal citizens like you and me. One of them just happened to remember their incomplete love story and is trying his best to make their ends meet so that his consciousness can finally rest in peace. Other than Yeon Seok remembering his past, there is no superpower or characteristic that makes him less ordinary, except for his multilayered personality and his weird humour. Additionally, I also enjoyed the sweet moments Yeon Seok and Jeong Ha Yeon had. So cute. However, towards the end it kinda got boring.
ACTOR
What surprised me the most though is that it´s the first appearance in a drama (on MDL) for both main leads. This get´s even more confusing when you witness their solid performance in terms of facial expressions and natural behaviour. So what can I even say? They did a good job, and I am glad that Jeon Chang Ha and Jin Gun were chosen as the main leads because they matched the characters and thus the entire series is harmonious.
The Supporting Cast also showed a satisfying performance in their roles. I can’t think of anything that I would have found disturbing or unfitting. Well done. Especially Song Han Hee showed off in her role as Mikael. I adore the idea and origin of this character, firstly that they are genderfluid/ non-binary and secondly that the series mentioned their identity. Good job!
OVERALL
As I said in the beginning, in terms of innovation and production, this drama is definitely recommended and it is indeed a good decision to watch “First Love, Again”, as it is a turning point in the Korean LGBTQI+ film industry.

It´s definitely a good decision to watch “First Love, Again”. In the following, I try to justify my recommendation briefly and concisely.
PRODUCTION
Nothing extra outstanding nor something they failed in. However, it gets closer to the normal high standard of Korean dramas. One thing I´d like to highlight is that the use of light and shadows in this series was on-point. Compared to other Korean LGBTQI+ series the dialogues and monologues have been better in both quantity and quality. The story feels less rushed than usual, and I am sure we can expect similar dramas to be produced soon.
PLOT
The plot is, I mentioned this in the heading, unique and exciting to watch. I especially enjoyed the soft pacing and the comedy side of a more serious story. Both characters seem to not be written as extraordinary people, but rather normal citizens like you and me. One of them just happened to remember their incomplete love story and is trying his best to make their ends meet so that his consciousness can finally rest in peace. Other than Yeon Seok remembering his past, there is no superpower or characteristic that makes him less ordinary, except for his multilayered personality and his weird humour. Additionally, I also enjoyed the sweet moments Yeon Seok and Jeong Ha Yeon had. So cute. However, towards the end it kinda got boring.
ACTOR
What surprised me the most though is that it´s the first appearance in a drama (on MDL) for both main leads. This get´s even more confusing when you witness their solid performance in terms of facial expressions and natural behaviour. So what can I even say? They did a good job, and I am glad that Jeon Chang Ha and Jin Gun were chosen as the main leads because they matched the characters and thus the entire series is harmonious.
The Supporting Cast also showed a satisfying performance in their roles. I can’t think of anything that I would have found disturbing or unfitting. Well done. Especially Song Han Hee showed off in her role as Mikael. I adore the idea and origin of this character, firstly that they are genderfluid/ non-binary and secondly that the series mentioned their identity. Good job!
OVERALL
As I said in the beginning, in terms of innovation and production, this drama is definitely recommended and it is indeed a good decision to watch “First Love, Again”, as it is a turning point in the Korean LGBTQI+ film industry.
Dissapointing
What a disappointment!
Summary: It’s a shame because this show had such a cool premise. A 300 years old soul chasing his soulmate through three lifetimes, is finally in a position to finally be with his beloved but then is shocked to find out that the woman he loves has reincarnated in the body of a man. Drama ensues. (How cool is this idea?!)
Plot: The show takes this really interesting concept and does NOTHING with it! It wastes the entire potential. There’s no development of the romance, the conflict is never developed or solved, it’s just. gone. There’s a freaking meaningless love triangle that does nothing. It’s just so sloppy. There’s not much more to say.
Acting: It was almost okay but Jeon Chang Ha is just bad at acting. Jin Gun almost survives but not really? They’re both really rookie and wooden and their chemistry is not there at all and it all looks cartoonish and exaggerated when they try too hard. Especially since the script just gives them absolutely nothing to work with either. Song Han Hee is the only saving grace, acting-wise.
Music and rewatch value: No.
Production: Bad. It looks like they filmed the whole show, every set of it, in a hotel apartment?! Like a really cheap one that students on their gap years with a budget would only go to. No set design worth a dime, no proper lighting. It’s like a young filming student’s class project that he filmed with his friends.
Overall: Don’t waste your time watching this. You’ll only get depressed at the wasted potential of what could’ve been. This could have been so good and it just wasn’t. It barely functioned.

Good concept Poor execution
This drama has such a good concept and should at least be the typical bl drama length of 8 eps which most K-BLs always suffer from rushing anyways, I get that these are low budget dramas but if you’re gonna do it, try to do it right. It cannot compare to other K-BLs that’s doing it better sorry, It’s still not the worst one I’ve seen which is good, but after completing it, feels like I couldn’t care less about the characters. Sorry if you like BLs and you’re new to watching dramas you might enjoy it a bit more, but for me who watched dramas over the past 10 years and support and like trying out new BLs this one isn’t worth your time. Go watch Semantic Error or other BLs to see how you can make short eps work and feel natural.

AKA First Love For The Third Time based on a BL script that won a competition from Ascendio studio (You Make Me Dance). It starred influencer Jeon Chang Ha and actor Jin Gun. About a popular novelist who remembers his past lives and meets his soulmate who has been reincarnated into the body of a man.
I enjoyed this show in part because it tackled one of the questions I’ve always head with the red thread trope: what if your soulmate reincarnates as a different gender than before? What if he’s out and gay and you’re not? Watching our hero deal with this was fun. A whole new kind of queer crisis.
However, this BL started out a touch mean spirited, but we eventually got a good kiss for a KBL. Then they went from like to love to boyfriends in a red hot minute. When they’re domestic these two are cute together with lots of communication (except the truth). I suppose in BL it takes a man who has lived 3 lifetimes to actually understand that conversation is what’s required to make a relationship work. The informal address discussion was adorable.
The confession/rejection scene was justified if one person remembers reincarnation and the other does not, but it was a bit much with lots of crying and a charming little self parody/mockery moment. The reconciliation and ending was. fine.
All in all the pacing felt rushed throughout this BL, and the romantic arc was underdeveloped. But that’s par for the course with Korea’s short form (they can’t all be Semantic Error), so it didn’t bother me too much. If you don’t mind a heavy does of melodrama in your BL this one has a solid story with a strong concept that’s well acted and produced, making it a classic KBL with better than average chemistry but ultimately a touch forgettable.
RECOMMENDED WITH A FEW RESERVATIONS
Enjoyable although improvements could have been made to the plot
Because I enjoy this series quite a bit, my initial reaction to some comments I have seen was: “Why are people so harsh on it?” Yet, admittedly, it has a number of flaws.
The story spans three lifetimes, and the focus is on the third lifetime set in the contemporary era, but the flashbacks to the first two lifetimes seem somewhat inadequate. How did the two lovers fall in love in the first lifetime and, really, how deeply in love were they? I would be more convinced that Yeon Seok feels gratitude towards Ha Yeon in the first lifetime as she is kind to him and gives him a name. But romantic love? In the second lifetime, the two seem in love, but the story is a little thin.
I’m guessing that one reason for the lack of attention to the first two lifetimes is that there simply isn’t the space or budget for additional development given that this is a miniseries of only six episodes. Another reason could be that this is a series targeted at BL fans and paying too much attention to the first two lifetimes when one of the lovers was male and the other female might well backfire.
Still, one wonders if the story needs to be the way it is. [Spoilers ahead.]
For the third lifetime, is it necessary for Ha Yeon to look different now that he is a man BUT have a sister who looks exactly like his first two incarnations? What purpose does it serve? Also, the central obstacle to the relationship in the third lifetime is Ha Yeon’s uncertainty about whether Yeon Seok is really in love with him or in love with his previous incarnations. The complication of having a rival in love for Yeon Seok can simply be left out. In its place could be more space to explore the transition of Yeon Seok’s feelings so that the viewer is certain that he loves Ha Yeon for who he is in the third lifetime–even before Ha Yeon realizes that Yeon Seok has been in love with the same person for three lifetimes. There could also have been more attention on how Ha Yeon falls in love with Yeon Seok in the third lifetime, such as through scenes of the effect of Yeon Seok’s books on him, etc. If the development of the affections of the couple had been done well, I would have felt more for the couple when Ha Yeon has a misunderstanding that Yeon Seok does not love him.

Whether you wish to see him as shy or a loner, what is universally true is that Jim likes to keep his circle small, and until he starts hanging around Ann, he barely went to any social events throughout high school. But, even when they are together, he strongly values their alone time when they are just talking and enjoying each other’s company.
Social and driven, Greg wasn’t really on Ann’s radar until he lied about her having to come to the main office to speak to her privately. After that, she tried to play it cool, no matter how serious the relationship went, because her Mom’s guidance was always in the back of her head, and with Ann going to school in New York, there was no guarantee Greg would last past the summer.
Casey
Casey is Greg’s older brother who goes into the navy and whose life develops primarily off-screen.
Kay is Greg’s wife who doesn’t necessarily come from money, for there were parts of her childhood where she struggled with her Mom and brother. However, things got better when she was older, and she did her best to financially contribute to her family alongside helping to care for the aunt who raised her.
Before the financial crisis, Greg was a banker who made a good amount of money. Afterwards? Like many, he struggled with life humbling him and found it hard to adapt to roles that paid less and didn’t have the same prestige. Thus leading to a certain level of depression that negatively impacts his marriage with Kay.
Jeannine
Jeannine is Ann’s mother, who isn’t the most optimistic regarding her daughter in a relationship. Especially one that could distract her from everything Jeannine sees as a higher priority.

Highlights
Ann and Jim’s Relationship
You’ll swoon over Ann and Jim’s relationship when it is focused on. It is treated with a certain level of delicacy. It isn’t a hot and heavy romance you can see burning out quickly once they go to bed with one another. Yet, it isn’t so slow-moving that you feel they won’t kiss until halfway through. The pacing of their relationship is appropriate for two teenagers still experiencing various firsts in their life and trying to figure a way to be happy.
It could also be said that, considering Jeannine’s influence and how that plays a role in Ann and Jim’s relationship, there is a certain level of authenticity. Ann and Jim don’t have a perfect high school to marriage relationship. It is complicated by college, family dynamics, and so much more. All of which leaves you to wonder if they are simply meant to set precedents in each other’s lives or potentially be each other’s first and last loves. Which makes every moment they have feel all the more special.
On The Fence
There Is Far More Kay and Greg Than Expected
Everything focuses on Jim and Ann’s relationship from the poster to the trailer. So you may find it surprising how much Kay and Greg are focused on. Now, is their relationship boring or terrible? No. However, it isn’t what you prepared for or likely expected. So watching Greg deal with being laid off during the 2008 downturn, Kay dealing with her guardian dying, and how their relationship is impacted by all of this may leave you feeling like “First Love” is operating a Trojan Horse storyline. That is, selling you on this idea of a young romance between Ann and Jim when it really wants to focus on Greg and Kay.
Ann’s Mom and Her Input
For the most part, Greg and Kay are so wrapped up in their own relationship and financial woes that Ann is someone who is known to them, but they don’t provide much in the way of advice or seem aware of what is going on. Jeannine, Ann’s Mom, is a different story. Her input makes it so you could potentially see her as the villain of the story.
But, at the same time, you get it. Jeannine doesn’t want her daughter, who she raised to be independent, smart, and social, to tether herself to a boy and compromise on so much to keep him happy at the potential sacrifice of herself. However, to understand there is something deeper to Jeannine requires you to fill in the blanks of her character development. Otherwise, you’d think she just wants her daughter to focus on having fun and that relationships are burdensome.
The Men Feel More Developed Than The Women
When it comes to Greg and Jim, it feels like you get to know them in terms of what they want, how they feel, and the obstacles to getting that. Greg wants to return to where he was, and his inability to secure a job that will allow him leads to depression and detached from his partner. Jim, seeing his parents struggling, dedicates himself to track, going to a public university, and we get to not only meet his friends and extended family but fully understand the effect of being in a relationship with Ann.
On the flip side? Yes, we meet Kay’s brother and aunt, but she doesn’t have a dynamic with them which boosts her character. Hearing about her Mom being unable to raise her, so her aunt did, gives Kay backstory, but as for who she is now and what’s next? Her life revolves around Greg. What is Kay’s job exactly? Assumingly in real estate, but it’s not made clear. With Kay, her focus is on Greg feeling better, him getting a job, and their relationship suffering because he doesn’t communicate. So as much as there is some effort to make Kay more than someone’s wife, sister, mother, and niece, it isn’t on parity with the men in her life.

As for Ann? The same issue exists. Her dad is an unknown character, and her Mom, it isn’t clear what she does or has gone through to become this woman who pushes the idea her daughter should date multiple people vs. being in a monogamous relationship. Also, in terms of her dreams and goals, yes, Ann is driven. However, what she is going to school for is hard to say. We see her do a monologue in one scene, but whether she plans to be an actor isn’t clarified or followed up on.
Which isn’t to say Jim’s future is spelled out beyond him wanting Ann back in his life, graduating from school, and getting some kind of job, but it does seem like the men get to be central to the plot of “First Love” while the women mostly revolve around them. Even if they have a few moments or details to show, they are, on occasion, able to pull away from their partner’s orbit.
