Омерзительный киберпанк: история комикса Hard Boiled
Культовое произведение Фрэнка Миллера и Джофа Дарроу и его переиздание 2017 года.
За долгие годы творчества из-под пера Фрэнка Миллера появилось много хитов — «Возвращение Тёмного рыцаря», «Бэтмен: Год первый», «Город грехов», «300». Эти комиксы и снятые по ним фильмы, в создании которых Миллер тоже принимал участие, сделали его одним из самых известных авторов современности.
Вместе с тем, есть у него и несколько очень спорных комиксов, о которых принято не вспоминать. Например, кроссовер RoboCop vs. Terminator (1992) или Holy Terror (2011) о борьбе с исламистскими террористами.
Минисерию Hard Boiled, выходившую в начале девяностых, читатели и критики так не смогли однозначно отнести к успеху или к провалу: эти метания происходят до сих пор. С одной стороны звучат мнения, что Hard Boiled — всего лишь коммерческий проект издательства Dark Horse, эксплуатирующий популярность Миллера. Что в комиксе нет хороших глубоких диалогов, присущих Миллеру, одна лишь необоснованная жестокость.
Другие говорят, что Hard Boiled — гениальный киберпанк, целая вселенная, лаконично описанная Миллером всего лишь в трёх выпусках. Комикс, который нужно не читать, а рассматривать с лупой и самому находить историю.
Но вот в чём дело: то, каким Hard Boiled увидел мир, за что его громогласно хвалят и неистово ругают — виной всему этому стал вовсе не Фрэнк Миллер, а талантливый художник Джоф Дарроу.
Сюжет Hard Boiled можно назвать полноценной историей лишь условно: здесь нет привычной завязки, представления персонажей, сюжетных поворотов и яркой кульминации. Всё сделано будто бы вполовину. Проще описать Hard Boiled так: ещё один день из жизни налогового инспектора Карла Зельца.
Карл просыпается после тяжёлой ночи — героя мучают кошмары. Любимая красавица-жена собирает его на работу, готовит бутерброды, двое детей провожают до машины. По дороге Карл попадает в пробку на мосту. Чтобы найти скрывшуюся из вида машину, он выруливает на другую полосу и таранит соседние автомобили. Сзади оказывается гигантский полицейский танк, который едет прямо по машинам.

Его собрали всего за три месяца до начала событий, записали в него воспоминания другого, уже умершего человека (скорее всего даже не одного), а его жена и дети — лишь служба поддержки, которая следит за его физическим и психическим состоянием. Удаётся им это не всегда: Никсон уже не первый раз срывается с катушек и начинает крушить город и превращать население в фарш.
Понимание происходящего в Hard Boiled приходит не сразу. Скорее всего, чтобы более-менее разобраться в сюжете, придётся ещё разок перечитать комикс. Hard Boiled — одно из тех произведений, в которых читателю не дают ни строчки объяснения мира, героев и их действий, всё приходится выуживать из коротких диалогов и детализированных рисунков.
Читатель здесь — тот же самый Карл Зельц. Он видит, что происходит что-то странное, и с недоумевающим взглядом пытается разобраться, что творится вокруг и почему он находится в центре этого бардака.
Большинство художественных произведений продолжили бы историю примерно так: главный герой осознаёт свою «нечеловечность», начинает бороться за свободу и жизнь своего вида, сбрасывает с себя оковы.
В Hard Boiled всё иначе. Герой поступает как самый настоящий человек: он посылает к чёрту этих жестянок, которых видит в первый раз в жизни, и разбивает одного из роботов. Никсон предпочитает доверять своим собственным воспоминаниям, хоть они и перекроены донельзя. Карл Зельц просто хочет вернуться домой.
Проблема идентификации личности Карла Зельца/Никсона среди фанатов вызывал не менее жаркие обсуждения, чем вопрос «снятся ли андроидам электроовцы?». Отправные точки всё те же. Можно ли доверять своим воспоминаниям? Даже если воспоминания ложные, теряют ли они от этого свою ценность? Как себя позиционирует робот, оказавшийся в человеческом обществе?
Миллер и Дарроу показали разные варианты самосознания роботов. Никсон — робот под кодовым номером 4 — отказался принять правду, его устраивали ложные воспоминания, он ценил их и был рад жить в незнании.
Робот под номером 3, которая мечтала, чтобы её называли Бланш, приняла свою техническую сущность и хотела бы быть свободной. Но при этом она не смогла до конца побороть свою программу: по её словам и действиям можно догадаться, что её использовали в качестве наложницы, и в разговоре с Никсоном она стала «исполнять свою программу».

Что такое «человеческая энергия»? В мире Hard Boiled это такой же источник питания, как и электроэнергия. На многих картинках можно заметить, что техника тем или иным способом подпитывается младенцами (здесь должна быть шутка про Death Stranding).
На самом деле, можно с уверенностью заявить, что наравне с Карлом Зельцем/Никсоном главным героем Hard Boiled является сам город, в котором всё происходит. Районы и пригороды Лос-Анджелеса наполнены движением, статичная картинка сочится жизнью. Но как только всматриваешься в детали, осознаёшь, насколько эта жизнь страшна и омерзительна.
Кроме того, что в этом мире дети используются в качестве батареек, можно увидеть, что город завалило мусором, небо покрыто густым туманом газовых отходов, повсюду знаки радиоактивности.
Отвратительное нутро нового мира скрыто в мелких деталях рисунка. Их можно легко пропустить, листая страницы, но в один момент в голове вдруг проскакивает: «секундочку, мне показалось или я только что видел бульдога с лазерными пушками по бокам?» С этой секунды начинаешь дотошно исследовать каждый сантиметр комикса, находишь удивительные подробности, тысячи отсылок и шуток.
За такое детальное изображение мира читатели обязаны благодарить американского художника Джофа Дарроу и его уникальный художественный стиль.
Для Джофри Дарроу Hard Boiled был первой большой работой на американском рынке комиксов. До этого он несколько лет трудился в мультипликационной студии Hanna-Barbera, рисовал концепты для мультсериалов Super Friends, Scooby Doo, Richie Rich и Pac-Man.
В 1982 году, когда Джофри было 27 лет, судьба свела его с французским художником Жаном Жиро, более известным как Mœbius (Мёбиус). Вместе они успели поработать над множеством художественных проектов – концепты к фильмам, иллюстрации, комиксы — и выпустить несколько работ на европейский рынок.

Hard Boiled (Chinese: 辣手神探 ) [2] is a 1992 Hong Kong action thriller film directed by John Woo from a screenplay by Gordon Chan and Barry Wong. The film stars Chow Yun-fat as Inspector «Tequila» Yuen, Tony Leung Chiu-wai as Alan, an undercover cop, and Anthony Wong as Johnny Wong, a leader of the criminal triads.
The film was John Woo’s last Hong Kong film before his transition to Hollywood. After making films that glamorized gangsters and receiving criticism for doing so, Woo wanted to make a Dirty Harry styled film to glamorize the police. With the death of screenwriter Barry Wong, the film’s screenplay underwent constant changes during filming. New characters such as Mad Dog and Mr. Woo were introduced, while the original plotline of a baby-poisoning psychopath was cut.
Hard Boiled was released in Hong Kong in 1992 to generally positive audience reception, but was not as commercially successful as Woo’s previous films such as A Better Tomorrow and The Killer. Reception from Western critics was much more positive, with many critics and film scholars describing its action scenes as being among the best ever filmed. In 2007, a video game sequel titled Stranglehold was released.

How to Make Hard Boiled Eggs
Follow these simple steps to make perfect hard boiled eggs every time:
First, boil the eggs. Place them in a pot and cover them with cold water by 1 inch. Bring the water to a boil over high heat.
Then, let them sit in the hot water. As soon as the water begins to boil, turn off the heat and cover the pot. Leave the eggs in the hot water for anywhere from 10-12 minutes, depending on how you like your eggs. The 10-minute eggs will have vibrant, creamy yolks, while the 12-minute yolks will be paler and opaque, with a chalkier texture.
Finally, move them to an ice bath. When the time is up, drain the eggs and transfer them to a large bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process. Leave them in the ice bath for at least 14 minutes before you peel the eggs.

So when she walks into Daniel’s office she is momentarily thrown off her game. She thought the best would mean an older man not a hot young one that she wanted. I’ll be honest: I was invited to read this as an ARC, and was a little worried when I learned this is a debut novel. I had no reason to worry. I love how Moss wrote the story, and especially loved her dialogue. It was the only realistic aspect of the story (again, not a complaint.) The smut was really hot and steamy. If you are looking for a realistic story, take heed to the warning Moss left in the description. This book is OTT, 50% smut, and filled with dirty language from a FILTHY mouthed alpha male; don’t be upset and complain because you were looking for some realism. 😂

A tough, cynical guy with a gun and a lot of Street Smarts, who solves mysteries with dogged persistence rather than astounding insight, the Hardboiled Detective was America’s Darker and Edgier response to the classic ideal of the Great Detective.
Anything but clueless, the hardboiled detective is generally a Knight in Sour Armor or even an Anti-Hero who lives in a world of Black-and-Gray Morality. He’s a Private Detective or Amateur Sleuth — usually the former. His services are required because the police are useless, corrupt or both, so he’ll never be a cop, though he may be a retired one. Expect him to keep a bottle of scotch in his desk, which is probably located in an office in the low rent district. Recent depictions typically include the trademark trenchcoat and fedora over a rumpled suit, made popular by Humphrey Bogart.
Originating in the early part of the 20th century, hardboiled detective stories quickly became a major subgenre of Mystery Fiction. Later, they became strongly associated with Film Noir. Raymond Chandler is considered the master of the genre, but it was Humphrey Bogart’s depiction of detective Sam Spade in the 1941 film, The Maltese Falcon (based on a novel by Dashiell Hammett), that became the Trope Codifier.
By the 1960s, the hardboiled detective had nearly become a Dead Horse Trope, but continuing interest in Film Noir kept it from the brink of extinction. Today it is most often seen in parodies and genre crossovers (the Hardboiled Detective In SPACE!!), but can still be played straight in Noir revival or homage. The style, language, and fashion of the hard-boiled detective tend to remain solidly anchored in the 1930s and 1940s, though, no matter where he appears. Expect him to call his gun a «gat», to refer to women as «dames» and their legs as «gams».

I love hard boiled eggs. They’re great for deviled eggs, egg salad, or just eating plain with a sprinkle of salt.
When it comes to boiling eggs, the biggest problem is that people can easily over-cook them, leading to a dark green color around the yolk and a somewhat sulphuric taste. Here’s my method for how to hard boil eggs so that they don’t get over-cooked.
Did you know? Older eggs are easier to peel than fresh eggs. If you are planning to make hard boiled eggs for Easter and want to make sure that the eggs are easy to peel, buy your eggs at least a week ahead of time (two weeks even better, they’ll keep).
If you’ve boiled a batch of eggs that you are now finding difficult to peel, try cracking the shells all around without peeling them and soaking the eggs in water for a while. The water often seems to seep in enough under the shell to make the egg easier to peel.

The size, temperature, and age of eggs all affect how easy they peel after hard boiling. For the best results, we recommend using large eggs straight from the fridge that are a week or two old.
How to Avoid a Green Ring
The dreaded grey-green ring around a cooked yolk is caused by sulfur in the yolk interacting with hydrogen in the egg white. This is either due to over-boiling the egg or using water with a high level of iron. This recipe cooks the eggs gently, avoiding overcooking and a green ring. If you have especially hard water, consider using filtered water to boil eggs.
Other Ways to Hard Boil Eggs
If you need easy-to-peel eggs and you have fresh eggs, you might want to try steaming the eggs for 15 minutes. Pour an inch of water into a pot and insert a steamer basket. Bring to a boil. Place the eggs in the steamer basket, cover, and steam for 15 minutes (more or less, check!). (Or if you don’t have a steamer basket, steam the eggs in a half-inch of water.) The steam penetrates the shell a bit making the eggs easier to peel. (You can also steam eggs in a pressure cooker!)

If you live at high altitude, let the eggs sit in the hot water longer or lower the heat and maintain a low simmer for 10 to 12 minutes.
Induction ranges come to a boil too quickly and retain too little heat for this method to work well. If you have an induction range, we recommend steaming your eggs, which will give you much more predictable results.

6 to 12 large eggs, straight from the fridge
Method
Fill a saucepan about a quarter of the way with cold water. Place the eggs in a single layer at the bottom of the saucepan. Add more water so that the eggs are covered by at least an inch or two of water.
The more eggs that are crowding the pan the more water you should have over the eggs. 6 eggs should be covered by at least an inch, 7 to 12 eggs, 2 inches.
Simple Tip!
Adding a teaspoon of vinegar to the water may help keep egg whites from running out if an egg does crack while cooking. Also some people find adding 1/2 teaspoon of salt to the water helps prevent cracking as well as making the eggs easier to peel. If desired, add either or both of these ingredients as the water begins to boil.

Depending on how cooked you like your hard boiled eggs, the eggs should be done perfectly after sitting for 10-12 minutes. That said, depending on your altitude, the shape of the pan, the size of the eggs, and the ratio of water to eggs, it can take a few minutes more.
Or if you like your eggs not fully hard cooked, it can take a few minutes less. When you find a time that works for you, given your preferences, the types of eggs you buy, your pots, stove, and cooking environment, stick with it.
I also find that it is very hard to overcook eggs using this method. I can let the eggs sit, covered, for up to 15-18 minutes without the eggs getting overcooked.
Simple Tip!
If I’m cooking a large batch of eggs, after 10 minutes I’ll sacrifice one to check for doneness, by removing it with a spoon, running it under cold water, and cutting it open. If it’s not done enough for my taste, I’ll cook the other eggs a minute or two longer.

Strain the hot water from the pan, careful not to dump out the eggs, and run cold water over them until they are cool to the touch. This will stop the eggs from cooking further and make them easier to peel.
Or, if you are cooking a large batch of eggs, remove them with a slotted spoon to a large bowl of ice water. Let them sit for a few minutes, or until cooled.

I find it easiest to peel the eggs under a bit of running water.
The best way to store hard boiled eggs is unpeeled in a covered container in the refrigerator. Eggs can release odors in the fridge which is why it helps to keep them covered.
They should be eaten within 5 days. Peeled eggs should be eaten within a day or two.

The good thing about this method is that even if you forget and the eggs sit in the water a few minutes longer than you had planned, they’ll still be fine.
Some people like their eggs less or more hard cooked than others. If you want your eggs still a little translucent in the center, let them seep in the hot water for only 6 minutes or so.

Banana Yoshimoto (よしもと ばなな or 吉本 ばなな) is the pen name of Mahoko Yoshimoto (吉本 真秀子), a Japanese contemporary writer. She writes her name in hiragana. (See also 吉本芭娜娜 (Chinese).)

Perfect Soft Boiled and Hard Boiled Eggs (Every Time)
Learn how to make hard boiled eggs (and soft boiled eggs) so they turn out perfectly every time. My hard boiled eggs recipe is super easy and allows you to cook a variety of eggs for the entire family – all in one pot.
When it comes to cooking hard boiled eggs there’s no shortage of tutorials online. And not surprisingly, they’re all pretty similar. Add eggs to a pot of cold water, bring it to a boil, turn off the heat and cook the eggs until hard boiled.
But I find that there’s one big flaw with this method that may be the culprit for folks accidentally overcooking their eggs (and I mention it on the video below). So what’s the flaw? The type of pot you use.

Aluminum, stainless steel and cast iron are well known for their different rates of bringing water to a boil and retaining heat. So if your eggs are sitting in a pot of cold water in a cast iron pot and it takes two minutes longer to reach a boil than an aluminum pot (not to mention the water will cool at a much slower rate once removed from the heat), you’ve now inadvertently cooked your eggs a few minutes longer.
That may not be the end of the world for hard boiled eggs, but it does increase the likelihood of a green tinge around your yolk and a more rubbery white. In other words, less than perfect hard boiled eggs.
The other drawback of cooking eggs in cold water first is the difficulty in making soft boiled eggs. Soft boiled eggs are far more of an exact science when it comes to time, which is why most tutorials have you cooking them in hot water.
So that begs the question – why cook them two different ways?
How to Cook Soft Boiled and Hard Boiled Eggs – Together In One Pot
I see no reason to cook soft boiled and hard boiled eggs any different. And the method I’ve used my entire life (thanks mom) is pretty darn foolproof.
Just bring a pot of water to a boil with enough water to cover the eggs by about an inch. By boiling the water first, it also doesn’t matter which type of pot you use as the eggs only hit the water once it’s boiling (212 degrees fahrenheit).
Reduce the heat to low and use a skimmer to gently place the eggs in the water. By reducing the heat to low, you’ll prevent the eggs from bouncing around and cracking. Then, turn the heat back up to a boil.
Immediately set a timer and cook the eggs according to how soft or hard you’d like them. Here’s my general description of how long to boil eggs:
Once the eggs have cooked, immediately place them in a ice water bath to stop them from cooking and maintain your perfect texture.
Eggs cooked between 12-14 minutes are perfect for all hard boiled eggs recipes, such as my egg salad, avocado egg salad, classic potato salad and deviled eggs. For soft boiled eggs, I love a good 6 1/2 minute egg, but my parents prefer 7 minute eggs. It’s all just personal preference, so find the time that works best for you.
How Long Can You Store Hard Boiled Eggs
According to Foodsafety.gov, you can store hard boiled eggs in the fridge for up to a week in their shell. Most say that if you peel the eggs, you should eat them within a few days. But if you’ve watched my meal prep video where I make soft boiled eggs ahead of time, you’ll see I frequently store peeled eggs for up to three days no problem. Do what you feel comfortable with.
It should also be noted that eggs should never be stored in the refrigerator door, due to frequent temperature changes. Always store your eggs in the main part of the fridge.
How to Make Hard Boiled Eggs Easier to Peel
Ahh, the million dollar question. There are many theories on how to make hard boiled eggs easier to peel, such as:
I’ve tried all of these over the years and found that none of these tactics created repeatable, easy to peel eggs except for the last one – the ice water bath. Many times, it’s just the luck of the draw with the eggs you’ve purchased.
And since I know I’ll receive this question in the comments, I’ll address it here. The number one question I receive on placing eggs into boiling water is “won’t that crack the egg open?” So here’s two things I do to ensure that doesn’t happen:
If you do those two things, you should be good. But of course, nothing’s perfect. I may have one egg for every 30 or so I make crack. Not bad odds if you ask me, especially when all the eggs that don’t crack come out perfect every time. And if you really don’t want to worry about cracked eggs, there’s always my poached eggs. *wink* Enjoy!

The Hard-Boiled Heavies, also known as the HBH for short, are the secondary antagonists of Sonic Mania. After getting struck by the power of the Phantom Ruby, they became surprisingly intelligent and strong, going over the standards of what Eggman thought they were capable of.
They were created by Christian Whitehead, and their theme was made by Tee Lopes and Falk Au Yeong.

Interestingly enough, the concept for the Hard-Boiled Heavies was created when Christian Whitehead imagined that Dr. Eggman slumped into a depression after the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles and wouldn’t even try to go after Sonic anymore. Instead he would just chill at home in his pyjamas. Meanwhile his abandoned Eggrobos would «go a bit mad», which sparked the idea for the Hard-Boiled Heavies.
Sonic Mania
The Hard-Boiled Heavies were originally a group of five normal Eggrobos that served Dr. Eggman, and were sent to Angel Island after Eggman detected a powerful energy residing there. When the Eggrobos unearthed the Phantom Ruby, which was the source of the reading, it’s energy fused the animals inside them into their AI and transformed them into powerful elite robots with different personalities and unique abilities, each reflecting the personalities of the animals within them. The HBH returned to Eggman with the ruby, but their rebellious antics made it difficult for the doctor to control them. So Eggman snatched the Phantom Ruby from the Heavies, which sent them on their way.
The Heavies would then attempt to destroy Sonic the Hedgehog and his allies within various Zones, only to be defeated each time before returning to the Titanic Monarch Zone. During the battle against the Phantom Egg, the heroes might be sent to briefly fight the HBH once more, except now they have been transformed into the Phantom Heavies by the Phantom Ruby’s power. Afterwards, the transformed Heavy King betrayed Eggman and attempted take the Phantom Ruby for itself. However both villains were eventually defeated by Super Sonic.
Sonic Mania Plus
In Encore Mode, it is revealed that the Heavies were dumped in a pile on Angel Island. Only the Heavy Magician was still active and managed to obtain the Phantom Ruby after posing as one of Sonic’s friends. She gives the ruby to the barley functional Heavy King, who uses it to restore the HBH to complete working order.

Heavy Gunner
The Heavy Gunner is described as a loose cannon and wields a missile launcher. He is fought in the Studiopolis Zones 1st act while riding a helicopter along with several police EggRobos and fires missiles at the heroes during a high speed pursuit. The slower moving blue missiles can be deflected back at him, eventually destroying his helicopter and forcing him to flee.
He is later fought again as the Phantom Gunner during the Phantom Egg boss fight. In this form, the Gunner has traded his arms and legs for more firepower. However the blue missiles he fires can still be deflected back at him.
Heavy Shinobi
The Heavy Shinobi is a skilled ninja who is fought in the Press Garden Zones 2nd act. He wields a unique sword that freezes his foes and throws Asterons as shurikens. He takes eight hits to defeat and can be stunned if he’s damaged while jumping.
As the Phantom Shinobi, he has eight large blades attached to his now-limbless body and resembles an shuriken. He will spin around in midair before stretching his blades out to try and harm his foes. However, this also makes his body vulnerable to attacks.
Heavy Magician
Described as a mystic performer, the Heavy Magician uses her magical talents to inconvenience the heroes. She first uses her abilities to create the Uber Caterkiller during the Mirage Saloon Zones 1st act, and in the 2nd act she goes on the offensive by using her shape-shifting hat to attack as either Fang the Sniper (A.K.A. Nack the Weasel), Bean the Dynamite or Bark the Polar Bear. She takes eight hits to defeat.
As the Phantom Magician her appearance does not change, but her magical abilities seem to be greatly enhanced. She will hide in one of three giant cups which will move around, forcing the player to try and memorize what cup she’s in. The correct cup will have the Phantom Magician inside it, vulnerable to attack, while the wrong cups will fire powerful energy blasts.
Heavy Rider
The Heavy Rider is a thrill-seeking robot that races around on her trusted Motobug, Jimmy. She is fought by Sonic and/or Tails in the Lava Reef Zones 2nd act while performing dangerous stunts, such as jumping across ramps and swinging around a flail at speed. She takes eight hits to defeat, after which she will fall off Jimmy, who will then flee.
After becoming the Phantom Rider, her appearance does not change, but Jimmy is modified to resemble more of a motorcycle. The Phantom Rider will then race the heroes while making harmful obstacles appear in front of them. However, the heroes can also use a booby trap to try and harm the Phantom Rider as well.
Heavy King
As the leader of the Hard-Boiled Heavies, the power-hungry Heavy King is more serious than the groups other members and seems to command them through intimidation. He is first fought by Knuckles in the Lava Reef Zones 2nd act while attempting to steal the Master Emerald. During the battle, the Heavy King will harness the Master Emerald’s power to achieve flight and fire energy bolts from his scepter. Like the other Heavies, he takes eight hits to defeat.
He eventually reappears in the Egg Reverie Zone as the Phantom King and betrays Dr. Eggman by trying to take the Phantom Ruby for himself. The King’s appearance has been very altered by his transformation; losing his legs and gaining bigger arms along with other changes. While empowered by the Phantom Ruby, the Phantom King will regain the ability to fire energy bolts, except now they are powerful enough to bypass Super Sonic’s invulnerability, and he can even use them to form a shield around himself.

Я вспомнила жуткие пещеры Бали и Малайзии, остров Сайпан и Камбоджу — разные местности, навевающие мрачные мысли о войне. Наверно, одной из причин возникновения моей хорошо развитой интуиции было то, что я, сопровождая отца в его рабочих поездках, с раннего возраста часто бывала в подобных краях. Если я расспрашивала о месте, вызывающем у меня неприятное ощущение, обычно оказывалось, что там произошли какая-нибудь авария или несчастный случай.
Однако я больше всего опасаюсь людей. Я считаю, что, по сравнению с живым существом, какое бы ни было ужасное место, оно не более чем место, и призрак, каким бы он ни был жутким, не более чем мертвец. Я всегда думала, что самое страшное — это человек.
Когда я обогнула молельню, внезапно с моих плеч спало напряжение, и меня снова окружила атмосфера тихого вечера.
Ночь опустила тяжелый занавес. Подул ветер, и в полутьме закружили опавшие листья разных цветов, будто закутывая меня тканью, сотканной в красивом сне.
