Me Against the World is the third studio album by American rapper Tupac Shakur, released in 1995 on Interscope Records. The album was composed of un-used tracks from the «Thug Life era», and from other studio sessions from early-to-mid 1994. It was his impending prison sentence, troubles with the police and Shakur being poor which many believe might have contributed to Shakur’s artistic re-emergence on record.
Me Against the World, released while Shakur was serving a jail sentence for sexual assault, made an immediate impact on the charts, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200. This made Shakur the first artist to have an album debut at number one on the Billboard 200 while serving time in prison. The album served as one of Shakur’s most positively reviewed albums, with many calling it the magnum opus of his career, and is considered one of the greatest and most influential hip hop albums of all time. It achieved double platinum status, and has sold 3,800,000 copies worldwide as of 2019.

In 1993, Tupac Shakur was a success in the hip hop scene, with two gold-certified singles that reached the Top Twenty on the pop charts («I Get Around», «Keep Ya Head Up»), and a platinum-selling sophomore album that would just peak inside the top twenty-five of the Billboard 200 (Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z. ). However, the 22-year-old artist had a series of incidents and charges of breaking the law following his breakthrough. In the summer of 1993, Shakur was charged for assaulting director Allen Hughes of the Hughes Brothers while filming Menace II Society and was later sentenced to fifteen days in jail. Later, in October 1993, Shakur was charged with shooting two off-duty police officers in Atlanta, though the charges would eventually be dismissed. In November, Shakur and two members of his entourage were charged with sexually assaulting a female fan, for which they were found guilty and sentenced to 4.5 years in jail.
Recording and production [ ]
Me Against the World features the debut appearances of Yaki Kadafi, Kastro and E.D.I. Mean, who appear as members of Dramacydal (a group that would later be merged into Outlawz). Richie Rich is the only other rapper featured on the album, although a number of singers were enlisted to perform the hooks of some songs. The album’s recording sessions took place at ten different studios, while it was mastered at Bernie Grundman Mastering.
Lyrical themes [ ]
According to Shakur, the album was made to show the hip hop audience his respect for the art form. Lyrically, Shakur intentionally attempted to make the album more personal and reflective than his previous efforts. Some of the album’s main themes involve paranoia, the loss of innocence, and occasional self-loathing. Much attention is paid to subjects such as the pain of urban survival.
Some tracks, such as the song «Old School», lean more to a nostalgic, though somewhat bittersweet side in Shakur’s remembrance of his youth and the early days of hip hop music. The album is also well known for the sensitive song «Dear Mama», in which Shakur expresses his devotion and appreciation for his mother Afeni Shakur, and reminds her that although his actions may prove otherwise that «you are appreciated». Throughout the entire of the album Shakur employs various poetical deliveries, ranging from the use of alliteration on «If I Die 2Nite» to the use of paired couplets on «Lord Knows».

Об альбоме
Диск был записан за неделю до обвинения в сексуальн насилии, в нём помимо Тупака обвинялись ещё два человека. Возможно из-за нависшего тюремного срока, материал альбома во многом изменился по сравнению с предыдущими дисками.
Me Against the World стал первым альбомом, артист которого был заключён под тюремный срок, в то время как диск вышел в продажу. К тому же, альбом достиг платины и первого места в чарте Billboard 200.

Я подумал, что только лишь одного трека будет недостаточно, чтобы оценить влияние Тупака на жанр в 1995 году, и решил посягнуть на святое. Не поверите как сложно рассказать что-то новое об альбоме, которому 26 лет и который является непоколебимой классикой жанра, поэтому я постараюсь освятить и общие и самые интересные лично для меня моменты альбома, среди которых вы возможно прочитаете то, чего не знали.
На Me Against The World существует множество рецензий как современников, так более-менее свежих. Я читал многие из них, но знаете, на самом деле никто до сих пор не смог описать альбом чётче и лаконичнее, чем сам 2 Pac: «Me Against The World был глубоким и задумчивым. Он похож на блюзовую пластинку. Это было по-домашнему. В альбоме были все мои страхи, все то, из-за чего я просто не мог уснуть. Все думали, что я живу хорошо, «настолько хорошо», что мне хотелось это объяснить что к чему. И для этого понадобился целый альбом, который объясняет мой образ жизни, кто я, мое воспитание и все такое. Он говорит об улицах, но говорит об этом в ином свете».
Интересно то, что многие критики во время выхода альбома отнеслись к нему скептически. Виной тому было то, что 2 Pac был неоднозначным персонажем не только в жизни, но и в текстах песен. То он поёт оды сильным женщинам в одних трека, то грубо занимается сексом, оскорбляя их, в других (это был самый банальный пример). Поэтому кто-то верил Тупаку на слово, а кто то ставил правдивость очевидно крутых песен под сомнение, из-за типичного поведения артиста, свойственного гангста-рэпперу. При этом, многие критики считают, что Me Against The World, был лучшим альбомом артиста из-за самоанализа, который он проявляет на протяжении всего альбома.
И тут интересный факт: Вы знали, что изначально альбом должен был называться «Fuck the World?». По словам продюсера Moe ZMD, Тупак во время записи был злой из-за всего, что с ним происходило, и на самом деле он просто говорил о смерти и знании того, что он умрет. Ему нужно было раскрыть всю эту правду, прежде чем это произойдет. Он чувствовал, что люди идут за ним, и ему было не по себе, из-за проблем с законом, людей с улицы и прочих конфликтных ситуаций. Так что, он хотел действительно изобразить свой гнев по поводу происходящего, но он всё же принял решение смягчить название, чтобы значение осталось тем же, но звучало не слишком резко.
Me Against The World занял первую строчку в чарте Billboard 200, и сделал Тупака первым заключенным в истории с альбомом номер один (к слову, Лил Уэйн повторил этот подвиг в 2010 году). Тупак всё еще сидит и тут происходит еще одно интересное событие. До этого, я думал что 2Pac был изначально подписан на DeathRow, а оказывается всё это время он был подписан на Interscope. Тупак подписал контракт с лейблом Шуга Найта и Дре, потому что считал, что The Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z и Puff Daddy подставили его, а Шуг, учитывая его деятельность, гарантировал протекцию, внёс залог 1,5млн долларов, из-за чего Пак вышел после 8 месяцев отсидки досрочно, но был вынужден выпустить под эгидой Death Row 3 альбома.
И теперь, когда закончился основной бэкграунд, стоит рассказать о содержании и треках, которые мне особенно нравятся. По факту, был один промо-сингл «Dear Mama», который вышел 9го февраля и которому я посвятил первую часть этой статьи про историю хип-хопа.

В одноимённом с альбомом треке «Me Against The World» 2Pac обсуждает тему несправедливости в своей одинокой битве против мира.
«So now I’m in this high-powered cell at the county jail, Punk judge got a grudge, can’t post no bail».
1994 год был самым тёмным периодом в жизни Пака. Его обвинили в изнасиловании, которое он не совершал, его подставили, ограбили и подстрелили лучшие друзья и он постоянно был под прицелом полиции. Несмотря на всю эту неразбериху, Пак написал самую пророческую и запоминающуюся песню всех времен («Death Around the Corner»).
Ну и в завершающем треке «Outlaw», Тупак впервые презентовал группу Dramacydal, которые позже стали известны как Outlawz. На самом деле это жесткая песня, где в интро 11летний пацан хвастается своей «гангстерской жизнью», а в аутро, 2Pac рассказывает, как на его концерте погиб 6летний мальчик, об инциденте на студии, где его подстрелили, и что он представляет, как на суде застрелит ту сучку, потому что она лжет.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Me Against the World is the third studio album by American rapper 2Pac, released on March 14, 1995, by Interscope Records and Jive Records. 2Pac draws lyrical inspiration from his impending prison sentence, troubles with the police and poverty, the album is described as being Tupac’s most introspective album.
According to him, Me Against the World was made to show the hip hop audience his respect for the art form. Lyrically, he intentionally tried to make the album more personal and reflective than his previous efforts. Considered by several music critics to be the best of any of his albums up to that point in his career, the album’s musical production was handled by his mentor Shock G, Easy Mo Bee, Tony Pizarro, Johnny «J» and the Danish hip-hop duo Soulshock and Karlin, among others. Me Against the World features guest appearances from rap group Dramacydal and rapper Richie Rich.
Released while Tupac was imprisoned, Me Against the World made an immediate impact on the charts, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200, holding the top spot for four consecutive weeks, and also topping the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. «Dear Mama» was released as the album’s first single in February 1995 and would be the album’s most successful single, topping the Hot Rap Singles chart, and peaking at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. While he was in prison, the album overtook Bruce Springsteen’s Greatest Hits as the best-selling album of the year in the United States at the time.
Me Against the World was eventually certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). At the 38th Grammy Awards, the album was nominated for Best Rap Album and «Dear Mama» was nominated for Best Rap Solo Performance. The album received acclaimed reviews by critics, being ranked among the best albums of the 1990s. It has been ranked by many critics as one of the greatest hip hop albums, as well as one of the greatest albums of all time. In 2008, the National Association of Recording Merchandisers (NARM), in conjunction with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, included Me Against the World in its list of the Definitive 200 Albums of All Time.
