Do you remember AOL Instant Messenger? It seems like so long ago that I used to chat on that platform. Well, that’s how I began talking to my next date…I’ll call him Teddy.

Teddy knew me from my life prior to my divorce. We both belonged to a local country club but did not move in the same social circles. He was divorced as well, and had just recently broken up with his long-term girlfriend.

Teddy reached out to me one night on AOL Messenger and, at first, I wasn’t sure who he was. After describing himself to me, he told me he had recently lost a lot of weight (he was obese the last time I had seen him), and was ready to start dating again. He asked me to have dinner with him the following week.

For me, dating someone I vaguely know already can be tough. While he is not really a stranger, there is a little more pressure for it to go well, because we have common friends/acquaintances, places we frequent in the area, etc. And, if people see you out together, they immediately assume it’s a “thing” when it might not be yet.

We agree to meet at a local Chinese restaurant. Teddy arrives a few minutes after me and we are seated at a table. As soon as we sit, Teddy starts talking…

Teddy: So, I lost a lot of weight but I gained it all back. My mom has been ill and I fell off the diet train again.

Me: Oh, I’m sorry to hear about your mother. (I didn’t address the weight issue.)

Teddy: You look great!

Teddy’s phone rings.

Teddy: Excuse me. I have to take this call. It’s one of my daughters from Florida.

(He has three daughters, all in their 20’s at the time.)

As he’s talking to her he tells me to order whatever I wanted for dinner. He’s talking to his daughter, I’m talking to the waiter. Who am I on a date with here?

He finally hangs up.

Teddy: So sorry. There’s something going on with my girls and I need to help them work it out.

Me thinking: Uh, NOW?! You have to help them right now, during a date with me? Can’t you tell them you’re out and you’ll call them in an hour??

Teddy: So, tell me, how do you stay in such great shape? You always look great!

Me: Thanks. Well, I go to the gym or do yoga a lot. And, I try to watch what I eat.

Teddy: Good! It’s very important to me that you stay in shape.

Me thinking: Hmmm. I should stay in shape but he can be 300 pounds? Interesting.

Teddy’s phone rings, again.

And, this time, he talks longer…at the table…in the restaurant…on a date…with ME!

The food arrives and I eat. He’s mostly on the phone and eating by this point. So, we talk very little…and finally, the check arrives.

Teddy very ceremoniously takes a black Amex card out of his very fat wallet to pay the bill. I’d have to be blind not to notice this performance.

Then Teddy says: I really hate dating women who are gold-diggers. I don’t get the impression you’re like that. It’s refreshing.

Me: Thanks. (Hmmm, if you don’t want gold-diggers, then don’t wear an expensive watch and flash your black card and your bulging wallet and talk about how well your business is doing. Unless, you DO want your date to notice that stuff.)

Teddy: I really hate that type, my last girlfriend was like that. She was always spending my money and asking me to take her places.

Me: Oh, ok. Sorry to hear that.

Teddy: It’s ok. I loved her but we fought a lot. My kids didn’t like her.

Me: Oh. (Why do men tell me so much about their exes? I really don’t want to know.)

Me: It’s getting late so I’m going to get going. Thank you for dinner.

Teddy: You’re welcome! I had a great time. Sorry about the calls, but it couldn’t be helped.

He walks me to my car and kisses me on the cheek.

The next night, I am using my computer when the AOL Messenger alert pops up. It’s Teddy.

Teddy: I was thinking, I should have planted a big, wet kiss on your lips last night. Why didn’t I do that?

Me: Mmmmm…because I wouldn’t have let you??

Me: Huh? Did you really just write that or are you kidding?

Teddy: Yes, I wrote that and no, I’m not kidding. You don’t have your son this weekend, right? So, do you want to go? Let’s go!

Me: No. I don’t want to go. Sorry.

Me: Teddy, you’re a nice guy (remember, I knew people who knew him…had to be somewhat polite), but you were really rude to me on our date. You spent almost the entire date on the phone with your daughters. I talked to the waiter more than I talked to you. AND, I don’t go jumping from a bad first date into someone’s bed. It’s absurd.

Teddy: I told you I was sorry about the phone calls.

Me: But, that doesn’t erase the fact that they happened, and that you ignored me and that I’m not that girl who jumps into bed with someone after one or two dates. (Remember, I clearly have lots of rules!)

Me: Yes. I’m sure. Maybe that approach works with other women, but it doesn’t work with me.

Teddy: Ok. Guess I’ll see you around.

In July 2019, I flew from Oslo airport to Longyearbyen, a city located in the Arctic (Arctic) archipelago of Svalbard. In 2021, I established the brand-Mr. Double Carbon portable power station. Looking into my heart, this is a major personal upgrade and business practice for me to practice the concept of environmentalism.

Since as early as 2006, I have been strongly influenced by the concept of environmentalism. For example, I try to use only one napkin for a meal without compromising my personal hygiene. For example, after washing my hands in a public bathroom, I do not use, or at most use, one Tissue at a time to dry my palms, the backs of my hands and between my fingers.

In a certain sense, the MR Double Carbon portable power station is a continuation of my personal thoughts and environmental protection philosophy, MR Double Carbon is a product with energy saving, emission reduction and environmental protection soul: from the material of the outer packaging, the cleanliness of the product during use, to the end of the life cycle of the ABS fireproof case and other products, how to put These electronic wastes are disposed of in the most environmentally friendly way, etc., so as to minimize the harm to the earth, and the whole life cycle has achieved the humanistic care of environmentalism.
