How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? Did you try to read that out loud? Did you find it hard? That’s a tongue twister. They usually have the same sounding consonants, so when you try to say each word the pronunciation comes out all wrong. Tongue twisters are a fun and great way to practice your articulation and your pronunciation. They challenge your capacity to enunciate the individual sounds in each word, so you don’t trip up and forces you to pay careful attention to the precise sounds in each word. Join us in this fun lesson where Ethan, Andrea and yourself are put to the test with 6 tricky tongue twisters!

Gabriele Oettingen is a Professor of Psychology and author originally from Germany. She has been teaching at New York University and the University of Hamburg for more than 20 years. Her research focuses on the Science of Motivation and explains why positive thinking alone is not enough to achieve our goals. Upon more than 25 years of research, she developed a goal-achievement strategy called WOOP. WOOP stands for WISH, OUTCOME, OBSTACLE, and PLAN. This empirically based approach focuses on helping people connect to their biggest wishes, clarify the desired outcome, identify the obstacles that may stand in the way, and set a realistic plan in just ten minutes or less!
I first heard about Gabriele’s work three years ago, and I found it immensely helpful for setting goals. This time of year, many of us are thinking about what new objectives we want to achieve, so I was so thrilled to be able to get Gabriele on. With Gabriele’s advice, you can make this the year that you actually achieve some of your deepest desires, be it English fluency, weight loss, better health, a new job, or even less anxiety! Gabriele shared with me a bit about how she ended up in the USA and some surprising cultural differences. Whether she still finds it challenging communicating in English. Why the advice to be optimistic or think positive may not always be to your benefit. How you can use WOOP to identify the right goals for this new year and actually achieve them. When you should use WOOP to be most successful and plenty of examples. How we can deal with risk aversion. How you can use WOOP to be a better parent. So much more. I’m so excited to bring you Gabriele’s work and wisdom, I hope you find it as helpful as I have. Let’s jump into episode 23 of Beyond Borders!

You’ve probably been through a situation where you either needed to say a word, but you couldn’t remember it, or that you had to speak in English but simply didn’t know how to say something even though you know it perfectly in your own language. I totally know how you feel. When I was learning Hebrew, I found it so complicated because virtually every word was completely different from the equivalent in English. I had to think so hard to put together a sentence because the vocabulary did not come naturally to me. So, to help you (and me!), this lesson brings 3 experts’ easy and practical tips to improve your vocabulary. Each of them has learned at least five foreign languages, so trust me that they have a LOT of experience learning A LOT of words.
Today we’re talking all about abbreviations in English. In case you’re not familiar with this term, an abbreviation is a shortened form of a word or phrase. For example, we might say FYI instead of «for your information» or ASAP instead of «As soon as possible.» You’ll come across abbreviations in your work, studies, and general daily life. They’re a huge part of communication, especially when texting or sending online messages or emails. In this podcast, we’ll clarify the various types of abbreviations and also teach you some of the most common ones.

«My weakness? Well, I’d say I’m a bit of a perfectionist.» How many times have you heard someone saying that or have even said that yourself? It’s quite common to repeat this over and over as an excuse to not take the next step towards a goal or a dream that you have.
Now, you may be thinking «But Ethan, I am proud of myself for being a perfectionist because it means that I care deeply about the things I do.» I understand why you might believe that calling yourself a perfectionist makes you feel that you work hard(er) than others to achieve the things you want to do. And there is some truth in that. However, our admiration for perfection is so universal that we never really stop to question what this concept is doing to you and your language learning journey.
There’s no doubt that English is the most widely spoken language in the world. So, by learning it, it will unlock a huge range of opportunities, no matter what your goals are, and some of them may be quite surprising. In today’s podcast, we’ll discuss four amazing ways that English will change your life. If you’re looking for some motivation for continuing with your learning, then you don’t want to miss out on this episode.

Gabriel Wyner is an American polyglot, book author, and founder of Fluent Forever. He fell in love with language learning while training to be an opera singer at school. After feeling pressured by a deadline to achieve proficiency in French, he worked his way to fluency studying on his own. Noticing that there was valuable advice online that was not put together, Gabe decided to share his journey in the book Fluent Forever: How to Learn Any Language Fast and Never Forget It, which since has become a best-seller. Since 2019, he and his team have been helping thousands of people with their language learning through their Fluent Forever app. Their mission is to enable a million people to have comfortable conversations in a foreign language by 2030.
This interview with Gabe was absolutely fascinating. It left me with so many questions, I only wish we could have talked longer. The interview starts a little bit slow, but trust me, stick in there through the whole interview for a goldmine of life-changing language learning advice. Gabe shares with me about his childhood and how his parents instilled a growth mindset in him from an early age. How a coming of age ceremony led him to become an opera singer and study vocal arts. Why goals are a crucial part of his language learning and how he sets effective objectives. How learning another foreign language might help you better learn English. The brain science that goes into making the fluent forever method effective, and how you can learn pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar in an efficient and natural way. You are really in for a treat with this one—it could change the way you think about language learning. I’m so excited to share this interview with you, so let’s get into episode 19 of Beyond Borders!

Ladies and gentlemen. English learners, teachers, and world changers. My next guest is Tiffani. Tiffani, from speakenglishwithtiffani.com, is a teacher and artist from Maryland, US. One day, she left her job as a web designer at NASA to embark on an adventure to South Korea. She lived there for almost 10 years and fell in love with teaching English as a Second Language. Since founding the Speak English with Tiffani Academy, she’s dedicated her time and energy to help learners from all around the world develop the confidence they need to speak and communicate in English. Through her Youtube Channel, podcast and app, she helps people to learn English in a simple and playful way.
This conversation was so much fun—I don’t think I have ever laughed this much during an interview. Tiffani has such amazing energy and is really an incredible teacher. We cover lessons Tiffani learned growing up and from her parents: Where her diligence, creativity, discipline, and entrepreneurial spirit come from. She shared with me how she got up the courage to leave a comfortable job at NASA by getting in touch with her purpose to help more people.
Tiffani told me how she broke out of the intermediate level of Korean by stopping to learn grammar and start playing with the language. She told you how you can do the same, and most importantly, how you can gain confidence. We also touched on the lack of diversity on YouTube when it comes to English teachers, and why if you have ever thought of teaching English online, you should give it a go. And so, so much more. So let’s not wait any longer to get into this inspiring and hilarious conversation with Tiffani, on episode 15 of Beyond Borders!

I feel seriously inspired from this conversation. We discussed how he has gained mastery in Portuguese without ever living in Brazil. He explained how he creates a Brazilian life in Colorado, and even speaks exclusively to his son in Portuguese (both he and his wife are American). How visualization is a powerful tool for him to speak three different foreign languages. Why «I don’t have time» is not a real excuse, and what you can do if you are someone who feels like they are always too busy. Gavin told me about the role of passion, dedication, and goals in being successful learning languages and guitar. Gavin considers himself a huge perfectionist, he explained how he has become comfortable with making mistakes when he learns a language. If you feel scared to start a conversation, you will get some great advice on how to reprogram your brain to get started speaking English or another language you want to learn. And tons and tons more insights! So get ready for a super fun and inspiring conversation with Gavin Roy on episode 14 of Beyond Borders!

My guest today is Veronika Mark, a language learner and YouTuber from Russia. On her YouTube channel, English with Veronika Mark, she shares the tips she applied on her own journey learning English for the past 6 years. Veronika speaks English and Chinese fluently, and also some French. She approaches a variety of topics, such as how you can keep motivated to learn English, where to find resources to enhance your learning experiences, and what to learn to go from intermediate to advanced.
I’m excited to bring you another story of success from an English learner. A crucial resource for Veronika to overcome her self-consciousness speaking English and communicate confidently was an English Speaking Club in Moscow, where she lives. She shared why this is so effective and how you can find one in your city. We discussed some of her essential routines, including bullet journaling, doing Yoga videos in English, and listening to podcasts and why it is so important that you create a language learning environment for yourself. She shared how to avoid getting stuck and continue expanding your knowledge of English once you are at an advanced level. She tells me about how it is different teaching her native language and teaching English. Her top piece of advice for learners is to have clear goals for your learning. She explains why. And so much more coming up in episode 13 of Beyond Borders!

Idahosa Ness is a polyglot, musician, and founder of The Mimic Method for learning languages. After traveling to Mexico at the age of 17 without knowing a word of Spanish, and struggling to connect with locals, he worked hard to perfect his accent by understanding the sonority of the language. He created The Mimic Method and used this approach to learn five other languages. He is oftentimes mistaken as a native speaker of the languages he has learned. Since then, he has helped lots of students to use principles of music to perfect their pronunciation in order to help them overcome the language barriers while building meaningful relationships in a foreign language.
Idahosa has created a truly revolutionary method for learning languages. It is probably the exact opposite of how you have been told to learn English your entire life. I truly recommend you listen to this episode until the end, If you can take some notes, and try at least one of his recommendations. Idahosa explains how he reactivates a language when he needs to start using it again. We talked about his unique approach for learning vocabulary, which is completely personalized to the learner’s needs and goals. As well as why you don’t need to worry about learning grammar. Idahosa says that awareness is foundational. It can help you to overcome fear, awkwardness, and frustration when speaking. He explains how. He discussed how the international phonetic alphabet can be a useful tool to use to create a map of what accurate speaking and listening look like. And he explained why it is never too late to start using this method. No matter where you are on your learning journey, you can use his Mimic Method and the tips you are about to hear to improve your English listening and speaking. That and so much more on Episode 12 of Beyond Borders!

Justin Murray is the Co-founder and CEO of RealLife English. He’s originally from the Seattle area in Washington State in the US but has been living in Brazil for more than 10 years. Justin and his business partners (including yours truly) started RealLife English as a series of face-to-face events to give their students the opportunity to practice speaking English through real-life conversations. The business grew into a global community with two very successful Youtube channels, a podcast, and a recently launched app designed to help learners like you to live your English. Justin believes that every learner is on a journey to become the best version of themselves and English is a powerful tool to achieve that. He dreams and works hard towards creating a world beyond borders in which global citizens connect through a common language.
Justin is my co-founder and a friend of mine, so we had a pretty fascinating conversation if I do say so myself! He recommends a couple of mind-blowing books that can change your life. Meditation and journaling are two crucial and fundamental daily habits of his, so we talked about why they are powerful and how you can get started if you’re curious. Justin shared what running competitively in high school and college taught him about life and leadership, and how his parents taught him the value of short term pain for long term gain. We discussed how RealLife English got started with events. If you are a teacher or a learner that might like to start an English-speaking group in your city, you can get some helpful advice here. In this episode of the show I had an amazing conversation with Hadar Shemesh, an incredibly skilled and insightful accent and fluency coach from Israel. She moved to NYC when she was 21 to pursue acting, where she worked as a bartender at a Jazz club to support herself. According to her, she used to get criticized because of her strong Israeli accent, but acting helped her become a «diligent speech student.» We start off talking about how we can often feel uncomfortable speaking a foreign language because we can’t express our identity, and her experience of this while living in New York. We discuss why it is less important than you think to speak like a native, and much more important to discover how to speak like yourself. We cover extensively about native-speakerism and discrimination towards English learners and non-native teachers, and how you can overcome imposter syndrome and share your passion with the world. No matter where you are on your language learning journey, whether you are a non-native teacher or a student, you will get a lot out of this interview. So, let’s jump in! Show notes here.

11 Reasons Why the Real Life English Podcast Will Change the Way You Learn English
A re you looking for ways to learn English that don’t take any time to do?
Would you like to improve your listening skills?
Are you looking for ways to learn English that are FUN?
If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then the Real Life English Podcasts are going to change your life.
1. Have FUN
Many ESL podcast are boring and way too serious.
We focus on making the Real Life English Podcasts as entertaining and as light as possible while still giving you valuable information.
We tell jokes and have fun while following a structure that makes the learning quick and painless. We don’t talk about one subject for too long. For example, each episode we have a small grammar tip, but we only spend a minute or two talking about it.
2. Learn How Natives Actually Speak
Many listening exercises that ESL learners do are scripted readings that don’t resemble real-life conversations. They tend to be slowed down, enunciated extremely well, and they don’t use any sound morphing (how natives cut and mix their words together—like gonna and wanna).
In the Real Life English Podcasts, me and Chad talk naturally. Everything is unscripted and is as unedited as possible. This’ll help you learn to understand English, the way it’s naturally spoken. You’ll also realize how common it is for even native speakers to make mistakes.
3. Learn English Anytime, Anywhere
One of the best parts about learning through audio is that you can learn anywhere. Your 40-minute commute to and from work can now turn into an English class. The 20 minutes it takes you to shop, cook, or walk your dog can now turn into an English class.
4. Improve Your Comprehension by Listening to Native Speakers
Many non-native English speakers say that they have trouble with listening comprehension. If you want to improve your listening comprehension… you need to practice listening! Amazing, right?
Even if you don’t understand everything that’s being said, or even if you hardly understand anything at all, you’re still learning. You don’t need to understand everything. Not listening to podcasts because you don’t understand everything is just an excuse.
Even if you understand nothing, your brain is still learning to identify the different sounds, phonetics, tones, and rhythm of the language.
The more you listen to people speaking in English, the easier it will be to converse with natives.
After listening to native English speaking podcasts, you’ll notice yourself having a much easier time understanding native speakers, and new words may come out of your mouth that make you think, “Where did I learn that word?”
5. Learn Real Life English Vocab
During the Real Life English Podcasts, whenever me or Chad naturally say a word or phrase that we think might be difficult for ESL learners to understand, we quickly define it for you and give you a few examples of how the word can be used.
Also, we listen to the podcast after we record it and write down the definition of any other words that we think might be difficult for non-native English speakers and give them to you in the text of the section of the show notes called Words to Know.
These aren’t words we think you should know. These are words we ACTUALLY use when we have a normal conversation.
6. Learn the Differences Between American and British English
Because I’m from the United States and Chad is from Australia, we naturally get into discussions about the differences between American and British/Australian English.
You get to hear the different ways that Australians and Americans pronounce different words and also the different phrases and expressions they use.
Sometimes I’ll say something that Chad doesn’t know, or he’ll say something that I don’t know, like busking (which we talked about in Episode 13 – Expressions related to Happiness).
If you’re one of the people who have trouble understanding the Australian accent, then have no fear, Chad’s Australian accent is mild.
7. Learn 5 New Expressions
The main material covered in the podcasts are the five expressions that Chad posts in the Facebook page and group every week.
There are tons of idiomatic expressions that are commonly used in English, and they can be quite difficult to learn by yourself as they aren’t found in regular dictionaries.
These expressions always cover a specific theme, like happiness. We give many definitions of each expression, say if it reminds us of any similar expressions, and then give you examples of how you can use it.
8. Get Your Questions Answered
Every podcast we answer a question or two from our community on Twitter. These questions are usually related to grammar. We’ve answered questions like “what’s the difference between ‘get up’ and ‘wake up,’” “when do use ‘shall’?” and “the difference between ‘only’ and ‘just’.”
If there’s something you’d like us to answer on the podcast, please tweet us @reallifeeng.
9. Learn a Cool, Quick Tip
Each episode we end with a quick tip to help you improve your English. This could be anything from the amazing vocabulary learning tool of Anki , to the thought-provoking videos (with subtitles and transcripts for 20+ languages) of TED .
These resources are designed to help you learn how to become an English for Life learner and get you excited about learning English. For more information on how to become an English for Life learner, check out this video on How to Become an English for Life Learner.
10. Stay Up-to-Date with the News
We start every podcast with a few jokes, then talking about what’s happening in the Real Life English Community.
You’ll be first to know about new projects we’re working on, Real Life English events, what parts of the world we plan to have our parties at next, and any other information we think our listeners would benefit from.

Hi…so many thanks to Real Life English team for your very useful lessons. It’s very helpfull to me and for others who really want to learn english..and its all for free. Great job, God bless you.
Hey guys, I’ve really enjoyed your podcasts. There’s one thing I’d like to comment to you: it’s about when Justin says in the intro “English should not be a dry…”. I can’t hear the word “should” and I think that’s connect speach as well, am I right? It looks to me like he doesn’t say that word, he swallows it, if I can say that.

Song and Lyrics: Bruno Mars –When I Was Your Man
Same bed, but it feels just a little bit bigger now
Our song on the radio, but it don’t sound the same
When our friends talk about you
All that it does is just tear me down
Cause my heart breaks a little
When I hear your name
And all just sounds like ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Too young, too dumb to realize
That I should’ve bought you flowers and held your hand
Should’ve give you all my hours when I had the chance
Take you to every party
Cause all you wanted to do was dance
Now my baby is dancing, but she’s dancing
With another man
My pride, my ego
My needs and my selfish ways
Caused a good strong woman like you
To walk out my life
Now I never, never get to clean up
The mess I made
And it haunts me every time I close my eyes
It all just sounds like ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Too young, too dumb to realize
That I should’ve bought you flowers and held your hand
Should’ve give you all my hours when I had the chance
Take you to every party
Cause all you wanted to do was dance
Now my baby is dancing, but she’s dancing
With another man
Although it hurts
I’ll be the first to say that I was wrong
Oh, I know I’m probably much too late
To try and apologize for my mistakes
But I just want you to know
I hope he buys you flowers, I hope he holds your hand
Give you all his hours when he has the chance
Take you to every party cause I remember
How much you loved to dance
Do all the things I should’ve done
When I was your man
Do all the things I should’ve done
When I was your man

Song: Eddie Vedder – Hard Sun
Lyrics
When I walk beside her, I am the better man
When I look to leave her, I always stagger back again
Once I built an ivory tower so I could worship from above
When I climbed down to be set free, she took me in again
[Chorus:]
There’s a big, a big hard sun
Beating on the big people
In the big hard world
When she comes to greet me, she is mercy at my feet
When I see her bitter charm, she just throws it back again
Once I dug an early grave to find a better land
She just smiled and laughed at me and took her blues back again
When I go to cross that river, she is comfort by my side
When I try to understand, she just opens up her hands
Once I stood to lose her when I saw what I had done
Bound down and threw away the hours of her garden and her sun
So I tried to warn her, I turned to see her weep
Forty days and forty nights and it’s still coming down on me

7 Reasons Why Podcasts Are Changing the Way We Learn English
Imagine practicing your English for an extra 5-10 hours every week without ever taking any extra time out of your busy day.
Imagine if you could easily practice your English while you’re stuck in traffic, on the bus, cooking, cleaning, or while you’re waiting in line at market or bank.
Podcasting makes all this and more possible.
If you haven’t discovered the magical world of podcasts, you’re missing out. Podcasting is becoming more and more popular. According to smallbiztrends.com..
“The U.S. podcasting audience is ballooning [expanding quickly], and eMarketer projects that growth will continue at least through 2013. By then, there will be 37.6 million people [in the U.S.] who download podcasts monthly, more than double the 2008 figure of 17.4 million. As a percentage of Internet users, podcast downloaders are expected to grow from 9% in 2008 to 17% in 2013.”
The world is falling in love with podcasts. Are you? If you haven’t yet jumped into the magical world of podcasts, here’s 7 reasons why podcasts will change the way you learn English:
1. Learn English Anytime and Anywhere
As long as you have an mp3 player, you can learn English whenever and wherever you want. Unlike the radio or television, YOU choose when you want to listen to the programs.
2. Learning Through Podcasts Takes No Extra Time
Unlike reading books, you can listen to podcasts while you’re normally doing boring activities like driving to work/school, washing dishes, standing in line at the market, or exercising.
3. Podcasts Are Free
Every single podcast in the iTunes store is free. What can be better than free? For many ESL podcasts, you’ll need to pay to read the transcripts, but the audio is always free.
4. The Best Way to Improve Your Listening Comprehension
If you want to improve your listening skills, you need to listen to English! Podcasts are like a radio show, and if you find the right ones, you’ll soon become addicted.
There’s no better way to practice your listening comprehension than being super excited to listen to the next podcast of your favorite English speakers.
Don’t worry if you can’t understand everything that’s being said. If you’re actively listening, you’re going to learn a lot. The important thing is to try and understand the general idea of what is being talked about. If you have any trouble you can always….
5. Rewind, Re-listen, or Slow Down the Speed
Podcasts make it easy to be a self-directed learner. If you didn’t understand something you can rewind a few seconds and listen to it again.
Or you can listen to the entire podcast again to deepen your understanding. And if they’re speaking too fast, you can slow down the podcast to ½ speed.
6. It’s So Easy and Convenient
Unlike radio and TV, you don’t have to remember what time your favorite show comes on and make sure you’re available. Also, it’s easy to avoid shows you don’t like, and simple to listen to the ones you do. (If you like a podcast, click subscribe and you’ll automatically download new episodes.)
It may take a little time to get accustomed to the iTunes store, but once you do it’s simple.
7. Listen to Anything You Want
One of the huge benefits of listening to podcasts in English is that are MILLIONS of podcasts to choose from (other languages are far behind—even more uneven than the fact that 52% of the websites in the world are in English).
Any topic you’re interested in you can find lots of good podcasts: travel, music, relationships, food & cooking, sports & hobbies, news & entertainment, business, self-development, health & fitness, history, philosophy or science.
As you can see, podcasts are convenient, easy, and free. You can listen to what you want, when you want, where you want.
However, just like there are hundreds of TV shows, you probably won’t want to watch most of them. But when you find the one you do like, you can easily fall in love. It’s the same thing with podcasts.
If you listen to a few podcasts you don’t like, don’t give up [don’t quit]. Be sure to listen to good number of podcasts before deciding it’s not for you.
Resources
If you want to listen to ESL podcasts I have two recommendations.
If you want to listen to non-ESL podcasts, you really just have to search for what you’re interested in. Depending on what you’re interested in, you could love a business podcasts I don’t really like, or I could love a self-development podcast you think is annoying.
To really take advantage of podcasts, you need to be able to find podcasts by yourself. Just give a quick search in iTunes, read the description, read some reviews and give a few podcasts a try! For more information on how to find podcasts click here.

RealLife English Podcast #284 – How to Think Like a Confident, Natural English Speaker
Today’s episode is the first lesson in the “RealLife Way” series, which is an overview of our teaching methodology, The RealLife Way methodology guides you beyond the classroom to Live, Speak, and Master English in the Real World.
But before we get into “Living” “Speaking” and “Mastering” your English, we have to talk about mindset. Mindset is the set of beliefs that shape how you make sense of the world and yourself. It influences how you think, feel, and behave in any given situation.
You might be wondering “What does this have to do with learning English?” Well, the answer might surprise you!
Today, we’re going to talk about why having the right mindset matters when it comes to being a successful learner and how YOU can achieve this.

Podcasts: The Future of Learning
Imagine if you could add 10 hours of studying English every week without adding any extra time to your day.
With podcasts you can.
If you don’t know what a podcast is, check out the article What is a Podcast and Why You Should Care.
These days, as business gets more and more competitive, you need to find ways to stay on top. You need to be learning constantly.
Podcasts are not only going to help you deepen your understanding about many parts of you life, but you’ll be improving your English at the same time! What more could you ask for?
Podcasts are a relatively new thing in the English speaking world, but they’ve been exploding in popularity. And for good reason, too.
Podcasts are free, they’re full of great information, they can be entertaining and funny, and you can listen to them while you’re doing stuff you normally do.
There’s no reason not to be listening to podcasts while you go about your daily life.
Your English will improve much faster, and you’ll be learning a lot more about yourself and the world.
Podcasts are one of the most amazing inventions of the 21st century
These days we spend so much time stuck in traffic, taking the bus, buying groceries, cooking, eating, cleaning, walking the dog, running errands and just standing in line for whatever.
If you add up all the time you spend doing these activities that you have to do to survive every week, if you’re like me, you would easily count over 10 hours.
What podcasts allow you to do is to be LEARNING while you do brainless activities like the ones mentioned above. (Find out more why podcasts are the Lazy Man’s Way to Learn English.)
Depending on what you have to do for work, you may find you can attentively listen to podcasts WHILE working.
Listening to podcasts accelerates your development.
Podcasts are the new way of learning
With podcasts, you can learn anytime, anywhere. You can even listen to them while multi-tasking.
Imagine how much better your English would be if you were studying an extra 10 hours a week.
Even if you don’t understand everything that’s being said in the podcast, it doesn’t matter. You’re still going to be learning A LOT.
If you’re listening to native English speakers talking for 10+ hours a week, your comprehension ability is going to skyrocket [go up really fast].
Podcasts are the new thing in the English speaking world. Unfortunately they’re not very common in other languages yet.
However, you can still take advantage of the wonderful opportunity and start listening to the immense amount of podcasts.
Where to start? ESL Podcasts
First, start with the Real Life English ESL Podcasts. Every Sunday, Chad and I release a new podcast where we talk about five new expressions plus listener questions and a quick tip to help you improve your English.
These ESL podcasts are perfect for non-native speakers because we talk like we do in real life, this is not scripted like so many other ESL “podcasts.”
Chad and I talk like we normally would, and anytime we say a word or expression that we think our listeners might not know, we define it for you.
We also give you a list of words to know before you listen to the podcast so you’re better prepared to understand what we’re talking about.
If you guys know of any other great ESL podcasts, please post them in the comments.
Lifestyle Podcasts
One of the great things about English is the immense amount of information out there.
You can learn just about anything in English from podcasts in English.
All you have to do is go to iTunes and search for whatever you’re interested in (click here for more information).
Whether it’s running, personal development, sports, business, travel, philosophy, or cats, you’ll be sure to find a podcast about whatever you’re passionate about.
If you have any great podcasts you think people would be interested in, please share them in the comments.
Don’t Understand Native Speakers?
If the people are talking too fast, you can download the podcast through iTunes to your iThing/mp3 player and play the podcast on ½ speed.
You can then listen to it once or twice on slow, then try to listen to it again on normal speed. (If you really want to test your English comprehension skills, try listening to a podcast on 2x speed. Good luck!)
Remember, you don’t need to understand everything that’s being said to be learning. Even if you understand nothing, your brain is going to be subconsciously learning the different sounds, tones, and the pronunciation of native English speakers.
However, if the podcast has a transcript, you can read along while listening to the podcast. Or, you can read the transcript first and understand it the best you can with the help of Google Translate. Then when you listen to the podcast in your car, you’ll have a much easier time understanding it.
How Podcasts Will Change Your Life
You get off of work at 5pm and start the 30 minute drive home. If there wasn’t any traffic, you could be home in 10 minutes.
After doing your best not to get frustrated about driving so slowly, you stop at the market to get some food for dinner.
You gather some food and other items and approach the checkout only to find a big ass line.
You impatiently wait in line, getting angry at the cash register lady for not being as efficient as she could be.
As you get back in your car, you notice you wasted 20 minutes in the store.
You get home and your stomach is growling, so you start cooking dinner. After another 30 minutes of preparation, you finally sit down to eat.
After you’re done eating you clean up after yourself and get ready to take a hot shower.
As you get out of the shower, you look at the clock, 7:03. It’s been nearly two hours since you’ve gotten off work. And what do you have to show for it? A full stomach and a clean body.
Now imagine how much different your experience would’ve been if you were listening to podcasts that whole time.
Podcasts have this magical ability to make time go by much faster when doing boring stuff.
And because you’re being actively engaged by podcasts, you don’t get as upset whenever something inconveniences you.
Oh there’s traffic? No problem, I get to listen to another podcast then.
Oh there’s a line at the store? No worries, I’m learning while I wait.
I’m willing to bet that you could listen to at least 10 hours of podcasts or other audio content every week without adding any extra time to your day.
That means every week you could be listening to 10 college lectures. (Yes, you can find college lecture podcasts on just about anything on iTunes.)
How much smarter would you be if you listened to 10 hours of college lectures every week?
Podcasts come in all shapes and sizes. You’re sure to be able to find many that you’ll fall in love with, just like the rest of the world is starting to.
So what are you waiting for?

What is a Podcast and Why You Should Care
Hey guys, wake up to the PODCAST REVOLUTION!
It´s changing the way people think and share information all around the world, but most Brazilians have never even heard about this wonderful technology that can change your life. Today is your chance.
Let’s talk about podcasts. As previously discussed in the RealLife Lifestyle English Guide, podcasts are becoming more and more important. So what is a podcast?
A podcast is a (relatively) new form of digital media that is revolutionizing both how we consume information AND the quality and diversity of the information we accept. The “pod sphere” is the term used to describe worldwide depository of podcasts.
Today I’m going to show you how to discover this rich and abundant source of free information in just a few clicks, not only to enrich your life with better information, but also to help you improve your English.
Today we’re going to explore the following issues:
So First of All, What is a Podcast?
Podcasts are free, downloadable audio (sometimes video) programs, containing new and interesting information about anything you can imagine. They are created by specialists in their fields, in addition to entertainers, journalists, and even big media outlets. A podcast is like a radio program, but you can download it from anywhere in the world. There are millions of programs to choose from, which you subscribe to, put on your MP3 player, and listen to whenever you want, wherever you want, and with basically no commercials. The point is that you are in complete control of your learning experience.
FOUR TYPES OF PODCASTS (Recommendations can be found at the end of this article)
My Experience with Podcasts
I’ve been listening to podcasts about 3 years now. I listen to podcasts a lot. I like the idea of being in control of the media I consume and mixing it up so I get a balanced diet of information. You will never get that in the traditional mass media. In a world where the rich control your information, with 99% of the mass media in the hands of a small handful of really powerful people, I really need a rich variety of news sources to form my worldview.
I live in Brazil, and I listen to them every day, in both English and Portuguese. I listen to podcasts about self-development, spirituality, the news from the United States, Portuguese learning and Brazilian music and culture podcasts. I use podcasts to teach English and I encourage my students to listen to them every day. It helps A LOT!
When and Where to Listen to Them
First of all, this is a very personal decision, but I can tell you, based upon my own experience, that there are spaces in my day where podcasts are very convenient. I rarely sit and listen to podcasts at home. So as not to waste time, I’m always doing something else. I’m always looking for these moments.
I listen to them on my mp3 player while I run, while on the bus, at home while I’m getting ready in the morning, ironing clothes, cooking and even when I’m cleaning the house. I sometime put them on my alarm clock so I can listen to them for a few minutes before finding the courage to get out of bed (this is an important practice to activate my Portuguese).
For English learners, it’s important to develop convenient, painless and playful contact you have with English on a daily basis. Let me put your English habits this way:
CONVENIENT + PAINLESS + PLAYFUL + EVERY DAY = BIG IMPROVEMENTS
(improvements that accumulate after a few months)
Think of it like putting your change every day into a savings account that accrues interest. It doesn’t seem like a lot at first, but over the months and years, it accumulates, gains interest, and a few months down the road, you realize that it’s pretty substantial. With consistent, relaxed, daily contact, your English will drastically improve over the months and years. Fifteen to twenty minutes a day is what I recommend. Like anything in life, you won’t notice improvements if you aren’t consistent.
A very convenient moment to listen is when you are in your car or on the bus. If you listen in your car and don’t have a very modern stereo system, you might need to figure out a way. This might take some investigation, maybe an investment in a better stereo system, but you can also purchase small portable speakers for really cheap.
How to Download Podcasts
iTunes (Apple/ Mac)
It’s actually quite simple. Itunes is probably the best program you can find to download podcasts. lthough it’s not necessary, itunes makes things a lot easier. Itunes is a free music program that enables you to surf the “pod sphere” and subscribe to your favorite podcasts. Here’s a quick guide.
You can find RealLife English on iTunes here (and download the App).
itunes/ podcasts with apple products (iphone/ ipod/ ipad)
The synchronization of podcasts to your ipod/ phone or ipad is much easier than other MP3 players. This alone is a great reason to consider investing in an ipod, iphone or ipad. If you don’t have the cash or are not convinced, don’t worry because with a little initiative you can listen to the same stuff without all the fancy equipment.
itunes without apple products (any other MP3 player)
itunes is still an extremely useful program even if you don’t have an ipod, iphone or ipad. It just takes a few more steps to put them on your non-apple MP3 player. Instead of easy synchronization from the program to your ipod MP3 player, you have to search for and find the folder that your podcasts are stored in, and then manually put them on your MP3 player. Look for the “itunes” folder on your computer and find where your music/ podcasts are stored.
To be fair, itunes isn’t the only program out there to navigate through the jungle of podcasts, but it is what a lot of people consider the best.
Stitcher (Android Phones)
If you have an android phone, there are plenty of podcast apps out there but we recommend Stitcher.
You can find RealLife English on Stitcher here (and download the App).

Get the BEST Experience from Learning English by Podcast
Podcasts are an amazing resource for learning English wherever you go. All you need is an MP3 player. If you don’t have an MP3 player, it’s one of the BEST investments you can make for your English.
If you’ve never used podcasts to improve your English, or you don’t know what a podcast is, then you’re missing out! Read this article first.
Podcasts are completely FREE and are booming (exploding) in popularity. And other than being an amazing source of fascinating, cutting edge (very new) information, they are also one of the absolute best ways to learn a language or to improve your current skills.
Podcasts are also one of the most convenient ways to practice and improve your English, but you can learn more about that here.
In this article, I want to focus on finding the best podcasts for your personal learning experience.
The simple way to learn English: Find the right podcast for you
There are SO many ESL and English podcasts out there. How do I possibly choose one?
I am new to using podcasts myself, and I recently started learning French largely by podcast. I have found them to be invaluable because of the convenience and the opportunity to hear native French speakers–even as I’m walking down the street in Brazil.
But I went through a process finding which podcasts I wanted to listen to in French because there are tons of choices.
The best method for finding a great podcast
There are two simple strategies you can use to find the best podcasts for you.
The RealLife English Podcast is a brilliant place to start, as there are new episodes every week that teach you valuable English expressions and give you other tips for learning, while you have a fun experience with Trevor and Chad.
How I found the right French podcasts for me
1. I searched on Google: “best podcasts for learning French.”
You can either search in your own language, if you want a more basic podcast that teaches you in your mother tongue. Or you can search in English (“best ESL podcasts,” “best podcasts for learning English,” or “top ten ESL podcasts”). Get creative!
I found a few good podcasts by doing this, which set me up with a good base in French. I quickly consumed all the episodes I could while on the bus, walking in between classes, or cooking. So I needed more!
2. I searched on iTunes.
In the store, I just searched “French” and scrolled down to the podcast section. There I found more than I could possibly choose from.
The titles can tell you a lot about the podcast. Is it just basic language skills? Is it conversational practice? Is it on music? Or news?
You can choose some that sound interesting and then click on “Ratings and Reviews” to see how popular and successful it is. If it has a large amount of positive reviews, then it’s a great option to start with.
I downloaded the first couple episodes of several different podcasts. This is crucial. Don’t just choose one or two. Choose a bunch, at least five or six.
Find a podcast whose hosts you relate to and that you find entertaining. The more fun you have learning, the faster you’ll progress!
I found podcasts in French that had good content, but I just didn’t like the host’s personality. And also some that had a host I related to, but the material was boring.
I ended up choosing one that teaches situational French (at the market, at the hotel, etc.), which is practical for traveling. And another podcast that talks about French music, which gives me a cultural introspective.
3. Don’t be afraid of podcasts that are completely in English (or in any other language you’re learning).
Just because you don’t understand everything, that doesn’t mean that you’re not learning. In fact, it’s the opposite. The more you get used to being immersed in the language, the better you’ll become.
I’m still searching for other great podcasts in French that will keep learning innovative. Why not one on business? Or one on French history?
The main aim of the podcast doesn’t have to be for learning the language. You can get podcasts in English that cover virtually ANY topic. The possibilities are endless. And as your skills progress, you can learn more and more.
If you can’t travel, well you’ll just have to immerse yourself at home.
Play with the language, and have fun!
Take your English classroom anywhere
Podcasts are an amazing resource for learning. You can learn English anywhere without spending any extra time doing it. You don’t need to pay for classes (even though a private teacher can be great) and you don’t need to go to a school.
You never need to get frustrated waiting in line or angry at traffic again. Fill these convenient moments with learning. Take your English classroom with you.
You don’t need to commit extra time to study English
So, if you’re not already using podcasts to improve your English, then get an MP3 Player, download iTunes, and experiment with different podcasts. You can take your English to the next level.

This is really a great idea. Thanks folks
Aww yeah Zakia, thanks so much for your support!
HI guys! It’s me again)
I’ve seen the movie “Into the Wild”, this particular movie touched me because I was watching it at the same age as its main character, so I felt almost the same (not exactly, but still). I understood him entirely because I was ready to the same crazy stuff, I was lost in some sense and I didn’t know what to do in my life. All I wanted was to explore the world, not to live an ordinary live with hated job and so on. Although I didn’t have the same problems in family like him, but I had mine, so I understood him very well. That was maybe the first time when I realized that people are generally the same, we all have common desires and problems, even though we live in different countries or even cultures. Since then, I increasingly notice that difference is too small to focus on it, instead I prefer to find common features between people.
And yeah, direct download link actually leads to podcast 167, not to 168.

It’s a great podcast. I learned many things. Thank you very much for your effort.
hi can you add transcript
No need for that actually. You can watch youtube version of the podcast with subtitles, so…
I read this book exactly because of your recommendation actually and I have something to add in terms of applying these habits from the book. I don’t want to belittle the value of this book, but for me, it’s kind of a paradox, so to speak, that for people who actually already know these things and apply them in their lives this book will be super obvious and they won’t find there so much new or exciting, but on the other hand, for those people who don’t apply these things yet ant want to be effective it will be not so easy to apply them. I’m saying that because I know a lot of people, for example, who aware of that principles, but guess what? Right, they continue doing what they’re doing)
Incredible, simply incredible how it can be true, but it is truth. You tell them that they have to carefully listen first, and only then to reply (something related to the topic, of course), but no, they just say what they wanted to say initially, without trying to understand another person. This is ridiculous, but that’s just the way it is)
At the end, I want to say one more thing: it doen’t matter if you’ll find this book mega-useful in terms of self-improvment or not, but it is certainly useful for your English learning journey, that’s for sure.
Hey Andrew, thanks for your response and engagement! Yeah, each to their own. The right book finds us at the right time, and sometimes it’s not the right book. But for me I’ve read it 5 times and I extract something new every time. If not new knowledge and perspective, for sure I need to deepen my application of it!
