Tips about gift cards and codes

Here are a few tips you should know before you get started:

Both the Microsoft and Xbox cards work just the same. Once redeemed to your Microsoft account, you can spend your balance at Microsoft Store online, on Windows, and on Xbox. You can get the latest apps, games, movies, TV shows, and Surface, Xbox, and accessories.

Gift cards do not currently work at physical Microsoft Stores.

You currently cannot buy Microsoft 365 with a gift card.

How to redeem a gift card or code online

The easiest way to redeem a gift card or code is online. Sign in to redeem.microsoft.com with your Microsoft account, enter the 25-character code, and then select Next.

If you or your family have multiple Microsoft accounts, make sure you’re signed in to the one to which you want to apply the gift card or code. Money can’t be transferred from one Microsoft account to another and can’t be converted from one currency to another. For more info, see Limits on the money in your Microsoft account.

Try signing in to your Microsoft account using an InPrivate browser session to clear all other Microsoft account info from the cache. See Browse InPrivate in Microsoft Edge for more info.

Here’s how to redeem a gift card or code from Microsoft Store on a Windows 10 device:

On your Windows 10 device, select Microsoft Store on the taskbar.

In Microsoft Store, select the See more menu (located next to the Search box on the upper right side of the page).

Select Redeem a code. If you aren’t already signed in, sign in to the Microsoft account on which you want to redeem the code.

Enter the 25-character code, and then select Redeem. Don’t worry about hyphens, the system takes care of those for you.

How can I tell if my card or code was redeemed?

To see if your card or code was redeemed, check your order history. On the Order history page, look for the date that you redeemed the card or code, and you’ll see the order number and how the card or code was used. If you see Redeemed code under Payment method, the card or code was successfully redeemed.

What happens after I redeem my gift card or code?

If the card or code has money on it, we’ll apply the entire balance to your Microsoft account. You can use it to buy things from Microsoft Store online, on Windows 10, and on Xbox One.

If the card or code is for a specific app or game, we’ll add it to your personal library, where you can download and install it. Go to My Library in Microsoft Store. When some apps or games are redeemed, they will take you to the product page where you can also download and install.

If the card or code is for a subscription, you can find it in your Services & subscriptions.

Troubleshooting

If you’re having trouble redeeming a gift card or code, select one of the following troubleshooting scenarios that best fits your issue, and it will expand to display more info:

Once a code has been redeemed, it can’t be redeemed again.

Check your order history to see if it was already redeemed on your account.

If you have more than one Microsoft account, you might have redeemed it on the other one. Try signing in with your other Microsoft account and try redeeming again, or checking your order history.

Check that you entered the code correctly. If the code was damaged, scratched, or warped in some way you may not be seeing the correct characters. Codes shouldn’t contain the following characters: A, E, I, O, U, L, S, 0, 1, 5.

There are a couple of places you can look for your content after redeeming a code.

If this is a Windows 10 game or app, launch the Microsoft Store app on your device and then select > My Library > All owned.

If the code is for content you already own, there are a couple of places you go to install your content.

If this is a Windows 10 game or app, launch the Microsoft Store app on your device and then select > My Library > All owned.

You can give the code to a friend since you no longer need to redeem it.

You might not be able to redeem a code to your account if you have a pending balance due on a subscription.

If the code hasn’t been activated, return it to the place where it was purchased and ask for them to activate it so it can be redeemed. Make sure to take your proof of purchase with you.

The code was purchased for use in a different country or region than the one your account is set to, so you won’t be able to redeem it.

If you purchased this code, try contacting the retailer you purchased it from for assistance.

If this was a gift from someone, and the person who sent it to you doesn’t live in the same country or region as you, ask them to sign in to their Order history and select Cancel item. Once they do that, they can resend the code using the country or region that matches the one on your account.

Some subscriptions limit the amount of time you can add using a code. If this happens, you’ll need to wait before you can redeem the code.

You can check how much time is left on your subscription at account.microsoft.com/services.

If the code was purchased from another company, such as Amazon.com, Best Buy, or EA, contact them directly to redeem the code.

Gift cards can be redeemed to personal Microsoft accounts, not business or corporate accounts. If you don’t have a personal account, visit the Microsoft account page to sign up.

Gift cards can’t be used to shop at Microsoft Store retail locations.

You can’t use a gift card to purchase Microsoft 365 subscriptions.

You can’t use Microsoft or Xbox gift cards to purchase content from the Xbox 360 Marketplace or Xbox 360 content on the Xbox One.

A gift card can only be redeemed in the currency printed on the card, or described on the web site. Example: a gift card in U.S. dollars can’t be used to buy an app priced in Euros.

The gift card or code may have additional instructions, and may be subject to additional terms and conditions.

Как активировать код на Xbox

На Xbox, как и в других цифровых магазинах (Steam, Epic Games, Origin и так далее), есть возможность не напрямую покупать игры и подписки, а активировать цифровые ключи. В этой статье мы рассмотрим 3 способа, как активировать код на Xbox — через консоль, сайт или приложение на PC.

Как активировать код на Xbox через консоль

Владельцы игровых приставок Xbox One или Xbox Series X | S могут активировать код через консоль. Чтобы это сделать, нужно открыть цифровой магазин Microsoft Store.

Далее в левом меню выберите пункт “Активировать”.

Введите код и нажмите “Проверка кода”.

Далее будет указано, к какому аккаунту будет привязан данный код. Если все устраивает, жмите “Далее”.

На заключительном шаге отобразится, что конкретно содержит данный код — Game Pass, игру или другой контент. Нажмите “Подтвердить”, чтобы заполучить его к себе на аккаунт.

Появится информационное сообщение, что теперь контент привязан к вашему аккаунту.

После этого можно переходить к установке игры, если активировался ее код, или к использованию подписки.

Как активировать код на Xbox через сайт

Другой способ активации кода Xbox — использование официального сайта Microsoft. Перейдите на страницу сайта: https://redeem.microsoft.com/.

Загрузится сразу страница для ввода кода. Введите его и нажмите “Далее”.

Отобразится контент, который содержится в данном ключе. Нажмите “Подтвердить”, чтобы привязать его к своему аккаунту.

На этом все — теперь контент привязан к аккаунту, им можно пользоваться с консоли или других устройств, для которых он предназначен.

Как активировать код на Xbox через приложение на PC

На PC с Windows 10 (и Windows 11) предустановлено приложение Microsoft Store. Через него можно активировать код Xbox, чтобы он был привязан к вашему аккаунту. Запустите Microsoft Store и в правом верхнем углу нажмите на 3 точки. Появится меню, выберите пункт “Активировать код”.

Введите код и нажмите “Далее”.

Отобразится контент, который привязан к этому коду. Нажмите “Подтвердить”, чтобы этот контент стал привязан к используемому профилю.

Теперь код активирован, можно закрыть окно.

Для активации подарочного кода или карты оплаты в Магазине Windows нужно сначала перейти на страницу активации, сделать это можно из основного меню по ссылке «Активировать код».

Кроме того аналогичная ссылка для перехода на страницу активации кода всегда имеется на странице платных приложений и игр рядом с кнопкой «Купить».

По умолчанию Магазин Windows предлагает ввести 25-значный код вручную, в окне ввода кода указывается к какой учётной записи Microsoft он будет привязан. Обратите на это внимание, если вашим компьютером пользуется несколько человек. После ввода кода достаточно воспользоваться кнопкой «Активировать» для его применения.

На устройствах, оборудованных камерой, доступна функция сканирования QR-кода, часто используемого на картах оплаты, распространяемых на бумажных носителях.

В случае с Windows 10 Mobile порядок действий ничем не отличается, используются те же пункты меню и кнопки, также доступна функция сканирования QR-кода.

Где купить?

Add money to your Microsoft account

To add money to your Microsoft account balance, you’ll need to redeem a Microsoft gift card on the Redeem page.

The full amount will be added to your Microsoft account and can be used to buy movies, games, in-app purchases, and physical goods. It can be used to purchase an Xbox-related subscription, but not a Microsoft 365 subscription. For step-by-step instructions, see Redeem a gift card or code to your Microsoft account.

Note: If you want to transfer money to a child, see Add money to your child’s Microsoft account.

If you don’t have a Microsoft gift card, you can purchase one online:

Make sure your payment methods are current on your Microsoft account. For more info, see Change the payment method or credit card linked to your Microsoft account or Payment options and orders.

Go to the gift cards page in the Microsoft Store and select either Xbox or Microsoft gift card.

Note: There are no fees or expiration dates, and either card can be used to buy popular games and apps, movies or accessories and devices

From the drop-down menu, select the amount of money you want to purchase and add that amount to your cart.

Go through the checkout process (you’ll need to sign in to your Microsoft account, so have your password ready).

Make sure your name and email address are shown as the recipient and complete your purchase (if you buy a gift card for someone else, it doesn’t add money to your account).

Confirm that you’ve received an email with the gift code. Go to the Redeem page. If you have more than one Microsoft account, confirm you’re signed in to the right one.

Enter the code and select Next. The entire amount associated with the code will be added to your Microsoft account.

Note: Subscriptions to Microsoft products like Xbox Live or Microsoft 365 can be extended without a gift card. Sign in to your Microsoft account services & subscriptions or learn how to turn on recurring billing for your Microsoft subscription.

How to redeem an employee or event attendee discount

Begin the registration process by selecting the «Schedule exam» button from any exam or certifications detail page. For detailed instructions on how to register, visit: Register and schedule an exam.

Sign into your existing Microsoft Certification profile or create one using a Microsoft account.

Once logged in, confirm details in your certification profile are accurate.

Click «Save & continue» button at the bottom of the certification profile page to proceed to the «Exam Discounts» page.

On the «Exam Discounts» page, enter the email that you used to register for an event.

If you are eligible for an exam discount, you will receive a verification email to the address you entered. You must enter the passcode you receive in the email to proceed. If you do not receive an email, you can request that the code be resent.

After entering the correct passcode, you will be asked to link your accounts. You MUST agree to link your accounts to receive a discount.

The next time you log in, if you are eligible for exam discounts for either of those accounts, the discounts will automatically be displayed. For instructions on how to remove an account, visit: Manage your certification profile.

You will see a discount pop up at the top. Choose the discount you want to claim, and then continue to the checkout by clicking on the scheduled exam button.

Follow steps on the subsequent screens and provide the required details to schedule your exam. During the checkout process, verify that the discount has been applied and submit the order.

How to redeem a voucher with Pearson VUE

To redeem a voucher, you will register and schedule your exam with Pearson VUE using the standard process. For detailed information about registering, visit: Register and schedule an exam.

On the screen where you enter payment and billing information, select “Add Voucher or Promo Code” and follow the on-screen instructions to redeem your voucher.

Generate promotional codes

Partner Center lets you generate promotional codes for an app or add-on that you have published in the Microsoft Store. Promotional codes are an easy way to give influential users free access to your app or add-on. You might also use promotional codes to address customer service scenarios by giving users free access to your app or add-on, or for beta testing with WindowsВ 10.

Each promotional code has a corresponding unique redeemable URL that a customer can click in order to redeem the code and install your app or add-on from the Microsoft Store. Note that your app must pass the final publishing phase of the app certification process before customers can redeem a promotional code to install it.

You can generate single-use codes (and distribute one to each customer), or you can choose to generate a code that can be used multiple times by a specified number of customers.

You can use targeted push notifications to distribute a promotional code to a segment of your customers. When doing so, be sure to use a promotional code that allows multiple customers to use the same code.

Promotional code policies

Be aware of the following policies for promotional codes:

You can use promotional codes even if your app is unavailable to customers (that is, if you have selected Make this product available but not discoverable in the Store with the Stop acquisition: Any customer with a direct link can see the product’s Store listing, but they can only download it if they owned the product before, or have a promotional code and are using a Windows 10 or Windows 11 device option in your submission’s Discoverability section). With this option, customers must be on Windows 10 or Windows 11 (including Xbox) in order to acquire your product with a promotional code.

Order promotional codes

To order promotional codes for an app or add-on:

In the left navigation menu of Partner Center, expand Attract and then select Promo codes.

On the Promotional codes page, click Order codes.

On the New promotional codes order page, enter the following:

Click Order codes. You’ll then be returned to the Promotional codes page, where you’ll be able to see your new order in the summary table of promotional code orders for that app.

Download and distribute promotional codes

To download a fulfilled promotional code order and distribute the codes to customers:

In the left navigation menu of Partner Center, expand Attract and then select Promo codes.

Click the Download link for the promotional code order, then save the generated file to your computer. This file contains information about your promotional codes order in tab-separated value (.tsv) format.

The file contains the following columns of data for each code:

Distribute the redeemable URLs to your customers via any communication format you prefer (for example targeted notifications, email, SMS messages, or printed cards). We recommend that your communication includes the following:

Code redemption user experience

After you distribute a promotional code (or its redeemable URL) to a customer, they can click the URL to get the product for free. Clicking the redeemable URL will launch an authenticated Redeem your code page at https://account.microsoft.com/billing/redeem. This page includes a description of the app the user is about to redeem. If the customer is not logged in with their Microsoft account, they may be prompted to do so. Your customer can also visit https://account.microsoft.com/billing/redeem and enter the code directly.

We recommend that you don’t distribute promotional codes to your customers until your product has completed the publishing process (even if you have selected Make this product available but not discoverable in the Store). Customers will see an error if they try to use a promotional code for a product which hasn’t been published yet.

After the customer clicks Redeem, the Microsoft Store will open to the overview page for the app (if they are on a Windows 10 or Windows 11 device), where they can click Install to download and install the app for free. If the customer is on a computer or device that does not have the Microsoft Store installed, the link will launch the Microsoft Store web page for the app. The code will be applied to the customer’s Microsoft account, so they can later download the app on a Windows device (that is associated with the same Microsoft account) for free.

In some cases, a customer may see a Buy button instead of Install, even though the app was successfully redeemed via the promotional code. The customer can click Buy to install the app for no charge.

Review your promotional codes

To review a detailed summary of promotional code orders for your apps and add-ons, navigate to the Promotional codes page (in the left navigation menu of Partner Center, expand Attract and then select Promo codes). You can review the following details for all of your current and inactive promotional codes:

Where to enter your Office product key

If your purchase of Office or Microsoft 365 came with a product key, you enter your product key on one of the websites listed below for your product. After you enter your key, you can download and install Office, or you can renew your Microsoft 365 subscription.

To redeem a new purchase

Step 2: Sign in with your Microsoft account, or create one if you don’t have one. Be sure to remember this account so that you can install or reinstall Office later, without a product key.

Important: If you’re renewing your Microsoft 365 subscription, enter the Microsoft account that’s associated with your subscription. I can’t remember my Microsoft account.

Step 3: Enter your product key, without hyphens, if prompted. If you don’t see the option to enter your product key, it was entered for you automatically.

Step 4: Follow the prompts to finish the redemption process.

To install or reinstall Office

If you see the error This product key has already been used when you enter your product key on www.office.com/setup or Microsoft365.com/setup, this means your product key has already been redeemed and is no longer needed.

Instead, use your Microsoft account to sign in to account.microsoft.com and install your Office product.

Note: If you’re trying to allow up to 5 other people to install Office using your Microsoft 365 Family subscription, see How to share your Office 365 Home subscription benefit.

Microsoft HUP

These steps apply only to Office Professional Plus, Visio Professional, or Project Professional.

Step 1: Start an Office app, like Word, Project, or Visio, depending on your purchase.

Step 2: In the Sign in to set up Office window, select I don’t want to sign in or create an account (it’s a small link at the bottom of the window).

Step 3: Enter your Office product key, without hyphens. If you don’t have your key, see get your HUP product key.

Microsoft Store

Step 1: Go to www.microsoftstore.com and sign in (upper right-hand corner) with the Microsoft account that you used to buy Office.

Step 2: After you sign in, select your name in the upper right-hand corner, and then select Order History.

Step 3: Locate the Office one-time purchase or individual Office app, and then select Install Office to view your product key (this doesn’t actually install Office).

Step 4: Select Install Office again in the window where the product key appears.

Step 5: On the Hi. Let’s get started page, follow the prompts to sign in again and associate your product with your Microsoft account.

Office 2010 or Office for Mac 2011

Microsoft 365 Business Standard

Step 2: Enter Office product key without hyphens, and then select Next.

Step 3: Follow the prompts to finish the redemption and setup process.

My product key isn’t working

If your Office product key doesn’t work, or has stopped working, you should contact the seller and request a refund. If you bought a product key separate from the software, it’s very possible the product key was stolen or otherwise fraudulently obtained, and subsequently blocked for use. Unfortunately, there are many dishonest sellers who offer stolen, abused, or otherwise unauthorized Microsoft product keys for sale. Sometimes these product keys are printed on counterfeit labels or cards with a download link to Microsoft software, and sometimes they’re distributed with software media that is unauthorized for resale, such as promotional media, original equipment manufacturer reinstallation media, or other Microsoft program-specific media.

Создание промокодов

Центр партнеров позволяет создавать коды рекламных акций для приложения или надстройки, опубликованных в Microsoft Store. Рекламные коды — это простой способ предоставить влиятельным пользователям бесплатный доступ к вашему приложению или надстройке. Кроме того, можно использовать рекламные коды в сценариях обслуживания клиентов, предоставляя пользователям бесплатный доступ к приложению или надстройке, а также для бета-тестирования с помощью Windows 10.

How to redeem an employee or event attendee discount

Begin the registration process by selecting the «Schedule exam» button from any exam or certifications detail page. For detailed instructions on how to register, visit: Register and schedule an exam.

Sign into your existing Microsoft Certification profile or create one using a Microsoft account.

Once logged in, confirm details in your certification profile are accurate.

Click «Save & continue» button at the bottom of the certification profile page to proceed to the «Exam Discounts» page.

On the «Exam Discounts» page, enter the email that you used to register for an event.

If you are eligible for an exam discount, you will receive a verification email to the address you entered. You must enter the passcode you receive in the email to proceed. If you do not receive an email, you can request that the code be resent.

After entering the correct passcode, you will be asked to link your accounts. You MUST agree to link your accounts to receive a discount.

The next time you log in, if you are eligible for exam discounts for either of those accounts, the discounts will automatically be displayed. For instructions on how to remove an account, visit: Manage your certification profile.

You will see a discount pop up at the top. Choose the discount you want to claim, and then continue to the checkout by clicking on the scheduled exam button.

Follow steps on the subsequent screens and provide the required details to schedule your exam. During the checkout process, verify that the discount has been applied and submit the order.

How to redeem a voucher with Pearson VUE

Xbox gift card codes are a special series of numbers and letters that can be used to add store credit to an account for buying digital products. Here’s how to redeem an Xbox code to use for video games, apps, movies, and TV episodes on Xbox One and Xbox Network.

How Xbox Redeem Codes Work

Because the account system that’s used on Xbox One consoles is the same one used for the Microsoft Store on Windows 10 computers, money added to an Xbox account via an Xbox One redeem code will also be usable on a Windows 10 device using the same account.

Microsoft and Xbox accounts are the same thing. They simply use different names depending on what device you’re using.

Because Windows and Xbox both use Microsoft accounts, you can actually redeem Xbox One gift card codes on Windows 10 and redeem Microsoft gift cards on an Xbox One.

How to Redeem Xbox Live Gold Codes

Xbox Live Gold redeem codes are similar to Xbox and Microsoft gift card codes but instead of adding credit to a Microsoft account that can be spent on digital purchases, it either activates an Xbox Live Gold subscription or extends the duration of a current one.

Xbox Network gift card codes can be redeemed in the exact same way as the Xbox and Microsoft codes.

How to Redeem Xbox Gift Card Codes on Web

One of the easiest ways to redeem an Xbox code is via the Microsoft website. All you need to do is go to redeem.microsoft.com, enter your code, and select Next to immediately add the credit to your account.

Before entering the redeem code, make sure you’re logged into the correct Microsoft account by checking your account avatar in the top-right corner of the web page.

How to Redeem Xbox Gift Card Codes on Xbox One

Xbox One gift cards can also be redeemed on any Xbox One console via the following method:

Turn on your Xbox One and log in if you haven’t already.

Press RB on your Xbox controller four times to navigate to the Store tab.

Highlight Use a code, then press the A button on the controller.

Press A to activate the on-screen keyboard and enter your Xbox or Windows gift code.

The email associated with your Xbox account will be displayed above the white field. If the email address is incorrect, you may be logged in as someone else. To switch accounts, press the Xbox button on your controller, then select your profile from the left menu pane.

Press B to get rid of the keyboard.

Use the arrow keys or joystick to highlight the Next button and press A to confirm the code. It will now be added to your account.

How to Redeem Xbox Gift Card Codes With the Xbox Apps

There are official Xbox apps for iOS, Android, and Windows 10 smartphones, tablets, and other devices. These can also be used to redeem Microsoft and Xbox gift card codes.

Open the Xbox app on your device. Tap the Hamburger Menu in the top-left corner to open the menu.

Tap Microsoft Store > Redeem a code.

Enter your code in the field and tap Next.

You can only add money or redeem gift cards to your Microsoft account up to a total of USD1,000* on any given day.

You can only spend up to USD1,000* per day.

Account balance

At any given time, the maximum amount of money you can store in a Microsoft account is USD1,000*.

If you have additional Microsoft accounts registered in your name, or accounts that we have determined you created, the combined limit for all of your Microsoft accounts is USD5,000*.

Note: * Or USD equivalent in your country or region’s currency

Local laws might have further restrictions. If you exceed any of these restrictions, you might temporarily be unable to redeem money to your Microsoft account or make purchases using your account balance.

Note: Your Microsoft account is limited so that in any 30-day period, you can only redeem up to EUR 150 to your Microsoft account and you can only purchase Products with account balance up to EUR 150.

Sign in to Office.com/setup with your Microsoft account, enter the 25-character product key, and then select Next.

How to redeem a gift card or code from Microsoft Store on a Windows 10 device

Here’s how to redeem a gift card or code from Microsoft Store on a Windows 10 device:

On your Windows 10 device, select Microsoft Store on the taskbar.

In Microsoft Store, select the See more menu (located next to the Search box on the upper right side of the page).

Select Redeem a code. If you aren’t already signed in, sign in to the Microsoft account on which you want to redeem the code.

Enter the 25-character code, and then select Redeem. Don’t worry about hyphens, the system takes care of those for you.

How can I tell if my card or code was redeemed?

To see if your card or code was redeemed, check your order history. On the Order history page, look for the date that you redeemed the card or code, and you’ll see the order number and how the card or code was used. If you see Redeemed code under Payment method, the card or code was successfully redeemed.

What happens after I redeem my gift card or code?

If the card or code has money on it, we’ll apply the entire balance to your Microsoft account. You can use it to buy things from Microsoft Store online, on Windows 10, and on Xbox One.

If the card or code is for a specific app or game, we’ll add it to your personal library, where you can download and install it. Go to My Library in Microsoft Store. When some apps or games are redeemed, they will take you to the product page where you can also download and install.

If the card or code is for a subscription, you can find it in your Services & subscriptions.

Troubleshooting

If you’re having trouble redeeming a gift card or code, select one of the following troubleshooting scenarios that best fits your issue, and it will expand to display more info:

Once a code has been redeemed, it can’t be redeemed again.

Check your order history to see if it was already redeemed on your account.

If you have more than one Microsoft account, you might have redeemed it on the other one. Try signing in with your other Microsoft account and try redeeming again, or checking your order history.

Check that you entered the code correctly. If the code was damaged, scratched, or warped in some way you may not be seeing the correct characters. Codes shouldn’t contain the following characters: A, E, I, O, U, L, S, 0, 1, 5.

If it’s a physical code, try returning it to the place you purchased it from and explaining that it couldn’t be redeemed.

If it’s a digital code, contact the person who sent it to you and explain that the code couldn’t be redeemed. If this code was a gift from another player, ask them to sign in to their Order history and select Cancel item.

There are a couple of places you can look for your content after redeeming a code.

If this is a Windows 10 game or app, launch the Microsoft Store app on your device and then select > My Library > All owned.

If the code is for content you already own, there are a couple of places you go to install your content.

If this is a Windows 10 game or app, launch the Microsoft Store app on your device and then select > My Library > All owned.

You can give the code to a friend since you no longer need to redeem it.

You might not be able to redeem a code to your account if you have a pending balance due on a subscription.

If the code hasn’t been activated, return it to the place where it was purchased and ask for them to activate it so it can be redeemed. Make sure to take your proof of purchase with you.

The code was purchased for use in a different country or region than the one your account is set to, so you won’t be able to redeem it.

If you purchased this code, try contacting the retailer you purchased it from for assistance.

If this was a gift from someone, and the person who sent it to you doesn’t live in the same country or region as you, ask them to sign in to their Order history and select Cancel item. Once they do that, they can resend the code using the country or region that matches the one on your account.

Some subscriptions limit the amount of time you can add using a code. If this happens, you’ll need to wait before you can redeem the code.

You can check how much time is left on your subscription at account.microsoft.com/services.

If the code was purchased from another company, such as Amazon.com, Best Buy, or EA, contact them directly to redeem the code.

Gift cards can be redeemed to personal Microsoft accounts, not business or corporate accounts. If you don’t have a personal account, visit the Microsoft account page to sign up.

Gift cards can’t be used to shop at Microsoft Store retail locations.

You can’t use a gift card to purchase Microsoft 365 subscriptions.

You can’t use Microsoft or Xbox gift cards to purchase content from the Xbox 360 Marketplace or Xbox 360 content on the Xbox One.

A gift card can only be redeemed in the currency printed on the card, or described on the web site. Example: a gift card in U.S. dollars can’t be used to buy an app priced in Euros.

The gift card or code may have additional instructions, and may be subject to additional terms and conditions.

Просто белый экран и полоса прокрутки. Похоже лежат.

How can I tell if my card or code was redeemed?

To see if your card or code was redeemed, check your order history. What happens after I redeem my gift card or code?

If the card or code has money on it, we’ll apply the entire balance to your Microsoft account. You can use it to buy things from Microsoft Store online, on Windows 10, and on Xbox One.

If the card or code is for a specific app or game, we’ll add it to your personal library, where you can download and install it. Go to My Library in Microsoft Store. When some apps or games are redeemed, they will take you to the product page where you can also download and install.

Tips about gift cards and codes

Here are a few tips you should know before you get started:

Both the Microsoft and Xbox cards work just the same. Once redeemed to your Microsoft account, you can spend your balance at Microsoft Store online, on Windows, and on Xbox. You can get the latest apps, games, movies, TV shows, and Surface, Xbox, and accessories.

Gift cards do not currently work at physical Microsoft Stores.

You currently cannot buy Microsoft 365 with a gift card.

How to redeem a gift card or code online

The easiest way to redeem a gift card or code is online. Sign in to redeem.microsoft.com with your Microsoft account, enter the 25-character code, and then select Next.

If you or your family have multiple Microsoft accounts, make sure you’re signed in to the one to which you want to apply the gift card or code. Money can’t be transferred from one Microsoft account to another and can’t be converted from one currency to another. For more info, see Limits on the money in your Microsoft account.

Activate Windows

Activation helps verify that your copy of Windows is genuine and hasn’t been used on more devices than the Microsoft Software License Terms allow.

Checking your activation status

You’ll first want to find out if your Windows 11 is activated and linked to your Microsoft account.

It is essential that you link your Microsoft account to the Windows 11 license on your device. Linking your Microsoft account with your digital license enables you to reactivate Windows using the Activation troubleshooter whenever you make a significant hardware change.

You’ll see one of these activation status messages on the Activation page:

Windows is activated

You are activated.

Microsoft account is not linked.

Windows is activated with a digital license

You are activated.

Your Microsoft account is not linked to your digital license.

Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account

You are activated.

Your Microsoft account is already linked to your digital license.

Windows is not activated

You are not activated.

You will see an error message explaining the failure.

You might need to purchase Windows 11 to activate.

If you have purchased a license for this device already and still receive an error message, continue to Methods of activation.

To link your Microsoft account, follow these instructions:

Confirm that the administrator account is also your Microsoft account by checking to see if an email address is displayed above Administrator. If an email address is displayed, this is a Microsoft account. If not, you’re logged in with a local account. If you don’t yet have a Microsoft account, see How to create a new Microsoft account.

Once you confirm that you’re an administrator and using your Microsoft account, go back to the Activation page, select Add an account, enter your Microsoft account and password, and then select Sign in.

After your Microsoft account has been added, on the Activation page you’ll see Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.

Methods of activation

Depending on how you got your copy of Windows 11, you’ll need either a digital license or a 25-character product key to activate it. Without one of these, you won’t be able to activate your device.

A digital license (called a digital entitlement in Windows 11) is a method of activation in Windows 11 that doesn’t require you to enter a product key.

A product key is a 25-character code used to activate Windows. What you’ll see is PRODUCT KEY: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX.

After determining which activation method you use, follow the steps in the corresponding Activate using a digital license or Activate using a product key.

Your activation method depends on how you got your copy of Windows 11.

If you got Windows 11 by.

Upgrading to Windows 11 for free from an eligible device running a genuine copy of Windows 10, Windows 8.1 or Windows 7

If you associated or signed onto a Microsoft Account or associated your MSA with your digital license, that will be your MSA containing the digital license.

Buying a Windows 11 Pro upgrade from the Microsoft Store app and successfully activated Windows 11

When purchasing from Microsoft Store, a confirmation email was sent to confirm the purchase. That email address (MSA) will contain the digital license.

Being a Windows Insider and upgrading to the newest Windows 11 Insider Preview build on an eligible device that was running an activated earlier version of Windows 11 and Windows 11 Preview

The email address that you used for your Windows Insider login will likely be the MSA containing your digital license.

Buying genuine Windows 11 from the Microsoft Store app

When purchasing from Microsoft Store, a confirmation email was sent to confirm the purchase. That email address (MSA) will contain the digital license.

Buying a PC that came with Windows 11

Find your product key either on the device packaging or on the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) attached to your device.

Buying a box copy of Windows 11 from an authorized retailer

Find your product key on a label inside the Windows 11 box.

Buying a digital copy of Windows 11 from an authorized retailer

Find your product key in the confirmation email you received after buying Windows 11 or in a digital locker accessible through the retailer’s website.

A digital license will be given to your device for Windows 11 based on the valid product key you entered.

Having a Volume Licensing agreement for Windows 11 or MSDN subscription

Your product key is available through the web portal for your program.

Buying a new or refurbished device running Windows 11

Your product key is preinstalled on your device, included with the device packaging, or included as a card or on the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) attached to the device.

If you bought a refurbished PC, the refurbisher, not Microsoft, must provide you a product key.

Buying from the Microsoft Store online

Find your product key in the confirmation email that contains the order history.

If you don’t have a digital license or a product key, you can purchase a Windows 11 digital license after installation finishes. Here’s how:

Select the Start button.

Select Go to Store.

This opens the Microsoft Store app where you can purchase a Windows 11 digital license.

Activate using a digital license

Digital licenses are associated with your hardware and linked to your Microsoft account, so there’s nothing you need to find on your PC. You’re all set once your PC is connected to the internet and you log in to your Microsoft account.

If you don’t have a digital license, you can use a product key to activate. To learn how to activate using a product key, follow the steps at Activate using a product key.

If you have a digital license for your device, you can reinstall the same edition of Windows 11 on this device without entering a product key.

Here are the possible messages that display on the Activation page:

Your Microsoft account is not linked to your digital license. Follow instructions for Linking your Microsoft account.

Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account

Your Microsoft account is already linked to your digital license.

If your digital license is not linked to your Microsoft account, follow the steps under Checking your Activation status, Linking your Microsoft account.

Once you have your account linked, then you can run setup to reinstall Windows 11. For more info about how to create installation media to reinstall Windows 11, go to the Microsoft software download website. When creating installation media, make sure to choose the edition of Windows 11 that matches the edition already installed on your device.

During reinstallation, if you’re asked to enter a product key, you can skip this step by selecting I don’t have a product key. Windows 11 will automatically activate online after the installation is complete. If you linked your digital license with your Microsoft account, be sure to sign in to the Microsoft account that is linked to the digital license.

When you make a significant hardware change to your device, such as replacing the motherboard, Windows 11 might no longer be activated.

Make sure you associate your Microsoft account to your digital license to prepare for hardware changes. The association enables you to reactivate Windows using the Activation troubleshooter if you make a significant hardware change later. For more info, see Reactivating Windows after a hardware change.

Activate using a product key

A product key is a 25-character code, that looks like this:

PRODUCT KEY: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

During installation, you’ll be prompted to enter a product key. Or, after installation, to enter the product key, select the Start button, and then select Settings > System > Activation > Update product key > Change product key.

Note: Microsoft only keeps a record of product keys if you purchased from the Microsoft online store. You can find out if you purchased from Microsoft in your Microsoft account Order history. For more help, see Find your Windows product key.

If you have a product key, then you can use Change product key to activate Windows 11 in each of the following scenarios. Below is supplemental information that might help you with activation:

You’ll need to use a valid product key to activate Windows 11 on a device that has never had an activated copy of Windows 11 on it.

You’ll also need to use a valid product key if you’re installing an edition of Windows 11 that wasn’t previously activated on the device. For example, you’ll need a valid product key to install and activate Windows 11 Pro on a device that had Windows 11 Home installed.

Note: In some cases, you might need to enter the Windows 11 product key that either came with the device packaging, was included as a card, or that appears on the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) attached to the device. If you don’t have a Windows 11 product key, you’ll have the option to buy one during installation.

When you buy a refurbished device running Windows 11, you’ll need to activate Windows using the product key on the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) that’s attached to your device.

If your original hardware manufacturer (OEM) changed the motherboard for you, your PC should reactivate automatically. If it doesn’t activate, your OEM might have provided a COA card with a 25-character key under a gray scratch cover. Follow these steps to get activated.:

Note: To remove the gray coating that conceals the product key, gently scratch it off using a coin or your fingernail.

Select Change product key.

Type in the product key found on the COA and follow the instructions.

During reinstallation, you’ll be asked to enter a product key. When you type in your product key, you will have an activated edition of Windows 11.

If you finished setup and did not enter your product key, you can still enter your product key. Select the Start button, and then select Activation > Update product key > Change product key.

When you make a significant hardware change to your device, such as replacing the motherboard, Windows 11 might no longer be activated.

If you do not reinstall Windows, then you can select the Start button, and then select Activation > Update product key > Change product key to reactivate your device. Otherwise you can enter your product key during installation of Windows.

If your original hardware manufacturer (OEM) changed the motherboard for you, your PC should reactivate automatically. If it doesn’t activate, your OEM might have provided a COA card that has a gray coating over a 25-character key. Follow these steps to get activated.

Note: To remove the gray coating that conceals the product key, gently scratch it off using a coin or your fingernail.

Select Change product key.

Type in the product key found on the COA and follow the instructions.

Microsoft identity platform and OAuth 2.0 authorization code flow

The OAuth 2.0 authorization code grant type, or auth code flow, enables a client application to obtain authorized access to protected resources like web APIs. The auth code flow requires a user-agent that supports redirection from the authorization server (the Microsoft identity platform) back to your application. For example, a web browser, desktop, or mobile application operated by a user to sign in to your app and access their data.

This article describes low-level protocol details usually required only when manually crafting and issuing raw HTTP requests to execute the flow, which we do not recommend. Instead, use a Microsoft-built and supported authentication library to get security tokens and call protected web APIs in your apps.

Applications that support the auth code flow

Use the auth code flow paired with Proof Key for Code Exchange (PKCE) and OpenID Connect (OIDC) to get access tokens and ID tokens in these types of apps:

Protocol details

The OAuth 2.0 authorization code flow is described in section 4.1 of the OAuth 2.0 specification. Apps using the OAuth 2.0 authorization code flow acquire an access_token to include in requests to resources protected by the Microsoft identity platform (typically APIs). Apps can also request new ID and access tokens for previously authenticated entities by using a refresh mechanism.

Redirect URIs for single-page apps (SPAs)

Redirect URIs for SPAs that use the auth code flow require special configuration.

The spa redirect type is backward-compatible with the implicit flow. Apps currently using the implicit flow to get tokens can move to the spa redirect URI type without issues and continue using the implicit flow.

If you attempt to use the authorization code flow without setting up CORS for your redirect URI, you will see this error in the console:

If so, visit your app registration and update the redirect URI for your app to use the spa type.

Applications can’t use a spa redirect URI with non-SPA flows, for example, native applications or client credential flows. To ensure security and best practices, the Microsoft identity platform returns an error if you attempt to use a spa redirect URI without an Origin header. Similarly, the Microsoft identity platform also prevents the use of client credentials in all flows in the presence of an Origin header, to ensure that secrets aren’t used from within the browser.

Request an authorization code

Unless specified otherwise, there are no default values for optional parameters. There is, however, default behavior for a request omitting optional parameters. The default behavior is to either sign in the sole current user, show the account picker if there are multiple users, or show the login page if there are no users signed in.

— query : Default when requesting an access token. Provides the code as a query string parameter on your redirect URI. The query parameter is not supported when requesting an ID token by using the implicit flow.
— fragment : Default when requesting an ID token by using the implicit flow. Also supported if requesting only a code.
— form_post : Executes a POST containing the code to your redirect URI. Supported when requesting a code.

At this point, the user is asked to enter their credentials and complete the authentication. The Microsoft identity platform also ensures that the user has consented to the permissions indicated in the scope query parameter. If the user hasn’t consented to any of those permissions, it asks the user to consent to the required permissions. For more information, see Permissions and consent in the Microsoft identity platform.

You can also receive an ID token if you request one and have the implicit grant enabled in your application registration. This behavior is sometimes referred to as the hybrid flow. It’s used by frameworks like ASP.NET.

Request an ID token as well or hybrid flow

To learn who the user is before redeeming an authorization code, it’s common for applications to also request an ID token when they request the authorization code. This approach is called the hybrid flow because it mixes the implicit grant with the authorization code flow.

The hybrid flow is commonly used in web apps to render a page for a user without blocking on code redemption, notably in ASP.NET. Both single-page apps and traditional web apps benefit from reduced latency in this model.

The hybrid flow is the same as the authorization code flow described earlier but with three additions. All of these additions are required to request an ID token: new scopes, a new response_type, and a new nonce query parameter.

The use of fragment as a response mode causes issues for web apps that read the code from the redirect. Browsers don’t pass the fragment to the web server. In these situations, apps should use the form_post response mode to ensure that all data is sent to the server.

Redeem a code for an access token

All confidential clients have a choice of using client secrets or certificate credentials. Symmetric shared secrets are generated by the Microsoft identity platform. Certificate credentials are asymmetric keys uploaded by the developer. For more information, see Microsoft identity platform application authentication certificate credentials.

For best security, we recommend using certificate credentials. Public clients, which include native applications and single page apps, must not use secrets or certificates when redeeming an authorization code. Always ensure that your redirect URIs include the type of application and are unique.

Request an access token with a client_secret

Now that you’ve acquired an authorization_code and have been granted permission by the user, you can redeem the code for an access_token to the resource. Redeem the code by sending a POST request to the /token endpoint:

Single page apps may receive an invalid_request error indicating that cross-origin token redemption is permitted only for the ‘Single-Page Application’ client-type. This indicates that the redirect URI used to request the token has not been marked as a spa redirect URI. Review the application registration steps on how to enable this flow.

Use the access token

Refresh the access token

Refresh tokens for web apps and native apps don’t have specified lifetimes. Typically, the lifetimes of refresh tokens are relatively long. However, in some cases, refresh tokens expire, are revoked, or lack sufficient privileges for the action. Your application needs to expect and handle errors returned by the token issuance endpoint. Single page apps get a token with a 24-hour lifetime, requiring a new authentication every day. This action can be done silently in an iframe when third-party cookies are enabled. It must be done in a top-level frame, either full page navigation or a pop-up window, in browsers without third-party cookies, such as Safari.

Refresh tokens aren’t revoked when used to acquire new access tokens. You’re expected to discard the old refresh token. The OAuth 2.0 spec says: «The authorization server MAY issue a new refresh token, in which case the client MUST discard the old refresh token and replace it with the new refresh token. The authorization server MAY revoke the old refresh token after issuing a new refresh token to the client.»

Don’t attempt to validate or read tokens for any API you don’t own, including the tokens in this example, in your code. Tokens for Microsoft services can use a special format that will not validate as a JWT, and may also be encrypted for consumer (Microsoft account) users. While reading tokens is a useful debugging and learning tool, do not take dependencies on this in your code or assume specifics about tokens that aren’t for an API you control.

Add money to your Microsoft account

To add money to your Microsoft account balance, you’ll need to redeem a Microsoft gift card on the Redeem page.

The full amount will be added to your Microsoft account and can be used to buy movies, games, in-app purchases, and physical goods. It can be used to purchase an Xbox-related subscription, but not a Microsoft 365 subscription. For step-by-step instructions, see Redeem a gift card or code to your Microsoft account.

If you don’t have a Microsoft gift card, you can purchase one online:

Make sure your payment methods are current on your Microsoft account. For more info, see Change the payment method or credit card linked to your Microsoft account or Payment options and orders.

Go to the gift cards page in the Microsoft Store and select either Xbox or Microsoft gift card.

Note: There are no fees or expiration dates, and either card can be used to buy popular games and apps, movies or accessories and devices

From the drop-down menu, select the amount of money you want to purchase and add that amount to your cart.

Go through the checkout process (you’ll need to sign in to your Microsoft account, so have your password ready).

Make sure your name and email address are shown as the recipient and complete your purchase (if you buy a gift card for someone else, it doesn’t add money to your account).

Confirm that you’ve received an email with the gift code. Go to the Redeem page. If you have more than one Microsoft account, confirm you’re signed in to the right one.

Enter the code and select Next. The entire amount associated with the code will be added to your Microsoft account.

Note: Subscriptions to Microsoft products like Xbox Live or Microsoft 365 can be extended without a gift card. Sign in to your Microsoft account services & subscriptions or learn how to turn on recurring billing for your Microsoft subscription.
