17 Ways to Say Sorry for Your Loss and Really Mean It

Unique and personal ways that you can use to say sorry for your loss to someone you care about.

Sorry for your loss. Смотреть фото Sorry for your loss. Смотреть картинку Sorry for your loss. Картинка про Sorry for your loss. Фото Sorry for your loss

When someone you know loses a loved one, it’s so easy to feel lost and helpless. It’s not easy seeing someone dear to you experience this much pain, and you just want to help them any way you can.

But even if you have the best intentions, sometimes you still end up saying or doing the wrong things.

In your desire to make them feel better, instead of making them feel comforted, you end up doing just the opposite.

There are other ways you can say how sorry you are for their loss and make them feel that you mean it. When words fail, show them that they have a friend in you by doing these thoughtful things for them.

‘Sorry for Your Loss’ Messages

My heart is filled with sorrow at the heartbreaking news. I pray that the love of God will sustain you and the support of your loved ones will hold you close in this time of deep sadness. I’m thinking and praying for you all. My deepest condolences.

A loved one’s passing can bring a pain so deep that only time can heal. There are no words that can ever describe the pain, sadness, and longing. But with God’s loving grace, you will be able to heal and feel joy again and smile at the thought that they are already in paradise.

I wish I could express the grief that I feel over your loved one’s passing. Just knowing that you are going through a pain so indescribable makes me want to reach out and hold you. May it bring you comfort to know that others care, and that we are just here to help you in any way we can.

I pray for your inner strength as you suffer the passing of your loved one. My heart and my thoughts are with you always. If there is anything I can do to lessen your burden, please let me know. I’m only one call away.

My deepest sympathy on your loss. He was such a wonderful person who always had a kind word for everybody. He will be truly missed. I pray that you will have the strength and courage to keep going despite the pain.

I am honored and blessed to have known him. He has touched our lives in ways one cannot imagine. I am deeply saddened by his passing and would like to offer my condolences to you and your family. My heart is with you during this very sad time.

A truly wonderful person has left us, and we are devastated. There is no one in the world quite like her. Even if she’s gone from this world, her memories will never fade. I’m praying for your strength and courage. Please know that I’m just here if you need anything.

I’m sending lots of love and deepest sympathies on the passing of your most cherished little one. It breaks my heart to know that you are going through this kind of loss and pain. Please accept my deepest sympathies.

I’m very sorry to hear about your loss. It’s a very difficult time. Don’t forget that whatever you may be feeling right now, this too shall pass. Stay strong and brave. I love you and I will be here for you.

I’m so sorry that you have to experience all this. I cannot imagine the pain that you must be feeling right now. Just remember that I’m here for you to help you with anything. Please take care.

I’m thinking about you during this difficult time. May the beautiful memories of your dearest loved one ease the sadness and the pain that is in your heart. I’m very sorry for your loss.

Say sorry for your loss by letting them know that you will be there for them in their hour of need.

Words of sympathy can mean the world to a grieving friend, but knowing that they have someone in their life who will be with them through the hard and ugly parts can also give solace.

It’s not the same as having your loved one right there with you, alive and well. But it’s a comforting thought to know that someone will be willing to step up and help you pick up the pieces.

Stay present in their lives. Be truthful and say that it’s going to hurt for a while. That it’s going to hurt for a lot longer than they realized, but that you love them, and that you will be there for them every step of the way.

Say sorry for your loss by including them in your thoughts and prayers.

When you’re not sure what to say or what to do, the best thing to do is to pray for them. Let them know that you are thinking about them and that you are praying for them for their strength and healing.

Forget about time expectations as well. Every person copes in a different way when they lose someone they love.

They may struggle with their grief longer than expected, but allow them to grieve for as long as they need. Reassure them that you won’t judge or think less of them, and that they should acknowledge the pain of their loss.

Say sorry for your loss by telling them that they can reach you at any time.

The moment that they come out of their grief-stricken daze, they will want to have someone that they can talk to.

Even at 3 in the morning. If you are that person for them, you should be ready to sit with them and talk. Or even just sit in silence and hold hands, letting them cry in your arms for however long they want.

Say sorry for your loss by giving them the space that they need.

When people lose a loved one, everyone will want to shower them with condolences and sympathetic messages.

People will be going out of their way to make them feel okay, visiting them at their homes to just talk to them.

Sometimes this is the last thing they want. Sometimes they just want to be alone with their feelings and sort through all the emotions by themselves.

Letting them know that you are just there for them when they need you is enough, but avoid smothering them.

Say sorry for your loss by admitting that you don’t know what to say.

No one really knows the right thing to say when someone dies. There’s just nothing that someone can say to take away the pain and the sorrow.

Admitting that you’re at a loss for words is a good start. When you claim to know that you do, it’s the quickest way that you can say the wrong or inappropriate thing.

Instead, hold hands or give them a hug.

Any gesture that will show how very sorry you are will be okay because actions truly speak louder than words.

Say sorry for your loss by telling them that you cannot imagine what they’re going through.

You truly cannot imagine the pain and sadness that they are feeling. Even if you experienced a big loss yourself, people just don’t grieve the same way. One person’s grief is different because there are many factors affecting it.

Each death is different, every relationship is unique, and not all people have the resiliency to cope. Not all people have a strong and loving support network as well.

Be understanding and supportive during their time of difficulty and just reassure them that you will always be ready to help.

Say sorry for your loss by telling that he / she was a wonderful person.

The pain is more painful because they lost someone so dear, so good, and so wonderful. Letting them know that they have loved a person that made this world a better place will fill them with pride and many happy feelings.

Say sorry for your loss by letting them know he / she will be truly missed.

Life will never be the same without them, and for this, they will be truly missed. They will no longer be around to brighten their lives, and they will no longer be around to celebrate every milestone with the family.

This is what hurts the most. When they feel the urge to cry, scream, or lash out, let them.

Tell them that it’s okay to feel this way.

Say sorry for your loss by sharing a wonderful memory.

You can talk and look back on the life that they lived and share stories and fond memories. Walk down memory lane and share nice stories to help their loved ones through their grieving process.

Share something about how they helped you in your life, how they inspired you to do your best, or how they reminded you to spend more time with family because you’ve been working so much.

Tell them something about the deceased that you know their loved ones will appreciate knowing and will ease the pain in their hearts.

Say sorry for your loss by honoring their memory.

No matter what kind of relationship you had with the person who passed on, you should honor their memory and show respect.

Whether you truly liked them or not, it’s never good to say bad things about someone who’s already gone.

You don’t have to have a mural or a statue created for them just to honor their memory. Speaking about them with respect and compassion will be more than enough.

You can also help in memorializing them by starting a charity foundation, or planting a tree, or writing letters, or holding remembrance gatherings.

No matter how big or small your effort, it will be very much appreciated by their loved ones.

Say sorry for your loss by asking if they want to talk about it.

When they are experiencing grief and they don’t know how to handle it, it helps to talk about it with someone. But don’t just assume that they’re ready to talk about it just because you are.

Ask them how they are holding up in a gentle and considerate manner, and if they want to talk about what they’re going through.

They will need no urging when they’re ready to talk, and they will just open to you when they have the chance.

Say sorry for your loss by asking how you can be of help.

Don’t be afraid to ask what you can do for them. It’s never good to assume, and it’s never good to impose. They will be going through different stages of grief, so it will be good to recognize the signs.

Are they still in denial, or are they in the bargaining stage?

Are they angry or depressed, or have they finally accepted the loss of their loved one? All this is normal, and knowing where they are in the grieving process can help you give them the support that they need.

Being with someone who’s grieving is never easy. Don’t take it personally when they become angry, or when they fail to see all the things that you’re doing for them.

Give them the time they need to deal with their emotions, and reassure them that you’re not going anywhere.

Say sorry for your loss by feeding them.

There will be a lot going on in their lives, and eating can be the last thing on their minds. They will have no energy to do anything else, much less cook something so they can eat.

But they will need to eat and nourish themselves because they will be facing some of the toughest days of their lives. Don’t take their word for it.

Prepare them hot meals that will nourish both body and spirit. Cook their favorite meals so that they will start to feel a little bit like themselves again.

When they are properly fed, they will have more energy to tackle the day ahead. When there are hot meals prepared, the fridge is well-stocked, and the house is in order, they will feel more like themselves again and not sink deeper in despair.

Say sorry for your loss by telling them you love them.

Reassuring them that you love them and you are there for them in their time of sorrow will mean a lot. Praise them for their strength as they cope with their loss, but let them know that it’s okay to be human and vulnerable as well.

Tell them that it’s alright to let go of their emotions from time to time.

Act on their behalf when they cannot do anything because of the pain they’re going through. Show up at their door because you anticipate their needs.

Tell them only the truth, even if you know it’s going to hurt.

Listen when they’re talking, and listen when they’re not.

Say sorry for your loss by just being with them.

You don’t need to talk and help them process everything that they’re feeling.

Sometimes it’s just good to enjoy a moment of silence, have a cup of tea, and just reassure them with your presence. When they’re not ready to talk about it, no matter how much you try, they simply will not talk.

Don’t feel pressured to make them share how they’re feeling, because they are dealing with their grief in their own way. Your job is to make sure that they have someone they love by their side.

Say sorry for your loss by making sure that they have fewer things to worry about at home or at work.

When someone dear to you loses a loved one, it will turn their world upside down. They will not be able to function, to face people, to go to work, or to run the household like normal.

If you can help them take care of these things for them, they will appreciate it very much.

Assist them with their bills payments so that everything is updated. Make sure that their fridge is clean and well-stocked.

If they have a backlog on their laundry, help them wash, dry, and fold so that they will have clean clothes to wear and fresh sheets to sleep on.

If the house needs a good vacuuming, do it until everything is spic and span. Support your friend in the small ways because this clearly speaks of your love for them.

Say sorry for your loss by still being there for them even when the funeral is over.

It’s during the days after the funeral that everything will start to sink in. They will realize that this is how life will be from now on.

When that happens, be there for them and help them come to terms with the loss.

Guide them as they take life one day at a time.

It will be a long and difficult journey, but it will get better in time with your love and support. Remember that experiencing grief is different for everyone.

Some people will mourn for a while, and then just get back to their normal routines to help them cope.

Some people will take a longer time to heal and shut out the rest of the world until they feel like their old self again. Whichever it may be, don’t ever stop giving them the help and support that they need.

Difference in meaning of ‘sorry for your loss’ & ‘sorry about your loss’?

2 Answers 2

The comments to this question are excellent and, collectively, supply a strong answer to the OP’s question. In trying to summarize them, let me first deal with the specific case of the friend’s lost camera at the Taj Mahal. Neither

works well in U.S. (and perhaps also in British) English in this instance, because (as Marv Mills observes in a comment above) the open-ended reference to «your loss» is idiomatically closely associated with the loss (by death) of a relative, friend, beloved pet, or other important figure in the bereaved person’s life. But the clarified forms

I am sorry for your loss of your camera.

I am sorry about your loss of your camera.

don’t work well either, perhaps in part because the duplicate use of «your» gives that word too much emphasis. Though it isn’t intended to be, the wording somehow sounds almost sarcastic to me. The normal (U.S.) idiomatic expression would be along the lines of

I’m so sorry that your camera got lost.

or (as Kris and Edwin Ashworth seem to recommend)

I was very sorry to hear about your lost camera.

or perhaps even

It’s a shame about the camera. I hate it when things like that happen.

With regard to the partial phrase «sorry about,» I think that medica’s comment deserves highlighting:

«Sorry about that,» a somewhat less than sincere version of «I’m sorry,» was so pervasive that I would not use about with your loss.

I don’t know whether «sorry about that» has the same unsuitable overtones outside the United States as inside it, but here the phrase is still widely remembered as a catch-phrase of the bumbling secret agent Maxwell Smart from the old TV comedy series Get Smart. Especially if the loss for which you wanted to offer commiseration were deep and highly emotional, you couldn’t do much worse than to say something resembling «Sorry about that, chief.»

carries a hint of unwarranted blame for the loss, as if the speaker were in some vague sense partly responsible. As Edwin Ashworth notes, adding «to hear» to the wording—»I’m sorry to hear about your loss»—utterly eradicates that faint shadow.

On the other hand,

sounds to me a little too close to «I’m sorry for you for your loss,» which evokes the slightly patronizing idiomatic phrase «I feel sorry for you.»

I think that John Lawler is correct in saying that English doesn’t have an entirely satisfactory form for expressing condolences at the death of someone else’s beloved friend or relative. His suggestion, «May his/her/their memory be a blessing»—which I have never heard used—sounds good to me.

Во 2 сезоне 2 серии сериала «Соболезную вашей утрате» Ли вынуждена обратиться к Эми, надеясь испробовать новый неординарный способ связаться с Мэттом. Из-за незнакомца Дэнни приходится идти на большой риск.

42 Examples of What to Say Instead of ‘Sorry for Your Loss’

When we learn that a friend, relative or even acquaintance has experienced the tragedy of losing someone from their lives very often our first reaction is to say ‘sorry for your loss’.

Which is perfectly understandable. It’s the natural response to a horrible situation and shows you are offering some comfort or empathy with that person.

But you may sometimes wonder if there isn’t more you can say. Or not even more, but just say it better. Better words, with more meaning. Words that offer extra understanding and support, that can give some hope or even help them to feel better.

That might be a lot to ask from a sentence or two but words have a greater power than we give them credit for.

And if we make an effort to say more than ‘sorry for your loss’ it can demonstrate we’ve taken the time to really think about the person who’s experienced the heartbreak of losing someone. They in turn will appreciate it, probably more so than ‘sorry for your loss’, and perhaps take some greater comfort from the words used.

So if you’re looking for alternatives to ‘Sorry for your Loss’ read on as we’re here to help you find the perfect way to offer your condolences but with more meaningful words.

The examples below will give you ideas of what to say at a funeral or how to talk to friends, family and colleagues who are dealing with the grief of loss. Hopefully they will make your words of sympathy sound more heartfelt and enable you to really be there for them in their time of need.

What Can I Say Instead of Sorry for Your Loss?

If you want a few quick different ways to say sorry for someone’s loss then the wording examples here should be ideal. They’re not specific to one person (i.e. a friend, family member etc), but they should be well suited for writing in a sympathy card or when offering condolences at a funeral.

All of these should be suitable for most situations. If you’d prefer to use your own words then try to think about what you would like to hear from someone if you were in that position.

You will want your words to reflect the severity of what has happened. Offer sympathy and understanding, say how sorry you are and if you can make it clear you are available to help in any way they may need.

It’s so hard to know what to say to people grieving at a funeral. How can mere words offer comfort to someone who just lost a spouse of 60 years? What do you say to someone who lost a child? How can words express your heartbreak when speaking to a young child who recently lost a parent?

Jump ahead to these sections:

Tip: If someone you know recently lost a loved one, our post-loss checklist can help them sort through the complicated tasks and challenges they might be facing.

Is It Okay to Say ‘I’m Sorry for Your Loss?’

Yes, it’s fine to say, “I’m sorry for your loss.”

However, we understand why you may ask this question. You are probably wondering if the phrase is a bit overused. In fact, you may be standing in line at a visitation or wake and hear everyone in front of you say these words to the family. Or you might scan a list of responses on Facebook and see “I’m sorry for your loss” compete with “thoughts and prayers” for the most common response.

While this certainly is a typical phrase to say to someone in mourning, there may be few good alternatives. Put yourself in the mourner’s shoes. Would there be anything that an acquaintance or Facebook friend could say to make you feel better?

It’s also important to understand that sometimes it’s more important to reach out to someone with overused phrases than not reaching out at all. Additionally, it’s more important that you go to the funeral and say these words than stay at home because you don’t know what to say.

However, we will attempt to help our readers by giving them other examples of condolence messages to share with someone who is hurting.

Have you lost someone close to you? If so, you already know that there’s very little anyone can say or do to make you feel better.

Jump ahead to these sections:

Remember that the messages you receive are sent in love. You may be tired of hearing, “I’m sorry for your loss,” so interpret this phrase to mean, “I care about you.”

Here are some ways to respond to the sentiment.

Tip: If you recently lost a loved one, our post-loss checklist can help you sort through the complicated tasks and challenges you might be facing.

Why Is It So Hard to Respond to ‘I’m Sorry for Your Loss?’

The death of a loved one is a traumatic event. You may forever remember the days surrounding the death for the rest of your life. It doesn’t matter if the death was expected or sudden. And this might be counterintuitive, but the death of someone you were estranged from may be just as difficult as one where you had a close relationship with the deceased.

One reason it’s hard to respond to “I’m sorry for your loss” is that you’ve just been through one of the most challenging events of your life.

Another reason it is difficult to respond to “I’m sorry for your loss” is that you may be experiencing brain fog. As a result, you may find it challenging to make decisions or remember what you need to do. Additionally, you might find it hard to have a conversation, especially one on such a sad topic.

Finally, you may also be struggling to respond to someone’s “I’m sorry for your loss” because you have nothing to say. You may respond to this message out of politeness or attempt to make the other person feel at ease.

Responding to ‘I’m Sorry for Your Loss’ in Person

Sorry for your loss. Смотреть фото Sorry for your loss. Смотреть картинку Sorry for your loss. Картинка про Sorry for your loss. Фото Sorry for your loss

If you recently lost someone, you may receive more than the usual number of visitors to your home. Your closest friends and family may surround you with love and affection during this difficult time. They may bring casseroles and fruit trays.

You may face more people at the funeral services. Some of these people you will know, and some you may not know at all.

Most people will say something similar to, “I’m sorry for your loss.” What is the appropriate way to respond when you have heard this phrase dozens of times in the last several days?

Here are some ideas.

1. “Thank you.”

“Thank you,” is the perfect response. It acknowledges that you heard and appreciate the sentiment. The person who expresses his or her concern should not expect you to offer a lengthy reply.

2. “Thank you for coming.”

No one enjoys going to funeral services, so thank the people who do attend. Tell them how much it means to you.

3. “I appreciate that.”

You want to know that others will remember the person who died. For that reason, some of your visitors may not only say, “I’m sorry for your loss,” they may also follow this up with kind words or a memory of the person who died.

Acknowledge both the sorrow and the memories by expressing your appreciation.

4. “I was lucky to be able to share my life with him/her.”

Tell others how you feel about the person you lost. Share memories and tell stories — express appreciation for the person’s life in the midst of your sorrow.

5. “My Dad thought highly of you.”

When someone dies, those who are usually uncomfortable talking about love and relationships may suddenly be more open to emotional subjects. So you may consider using this opportunity to share feelings.

In this example, your dad may not have ever told someone directly that he thought highly of them even though it was true. But you can become your dad’s voice and spread positive messages of friendship to those who attend the funeral.

6. “Thank you. It has been a tough six months.”

For many of you experiencing loss, the day of the death may have ended months or years of health battles in the form of hospital stays, surgeries, and treatments. Responding in this way doesn’t imply that you are relieved that your loved one is gone. It simply states that you and your family have experienced months of emotional hardship, including the death of your loved one.

7. “I’m glad he and Mom are together once again.”

Believers in the afterlife are reassured that their loved ones are in Heaven. If this describes your beliefs, share it with others.

8. “Thanks. I’m sorry I didn’t do more when your mom died. I should have gone to the funeral, but I was too uncomfortable. Now, I understand why it’s so important.”

You don’t really get what it’s like to lose someone close to you until you experience it yourself. And even though people grieve differently, we all want to feel loved and supported by those close to us.

You might want to use this opportunity to apologize to friends who you didn’t support during their time of need.

Share positive memories of the deceased. Tell stories – even if they make people laugh. It may inspire others to tell you things about the deceased that you had never heard.

Responding to ‘I’m Sorry for Your Loss’ via Text Message

Sorry for your loss. Смотреть фото Sorry for your loss. Смотреть картинку Sorry for your loss. Картинка про Sorry for your loss. Фото Sorry for your loss

Text messages have replaced phone calls and mailed communication. You may not agree with this trend, but it’s the reality of modern life.

Here are ways you can respond when a friend, extended family member or an acquaintance sends you the message, “I’m sorry for your loss.”

Your friend may do more than offer condolences. He or she may also want to attend the funeral services.

Share the service details with your friends or family members as soon as you can. People who want to attend may have to make travel arrangements, take time off work, find child care, or cancel appointments. The sooner you can share the details, the more likely he or she will be able to attend.

11. “Thank you for all your support during these difficult months.”

When someone you love is dying, you may find yourself withdrawing from society because you don’t have time to socialize or you don’t feel like being around others. Good friends will understand, so thank them.

12. “Thank you for reaching out to me. It’s been a very difficult few days.”

You may not approve of using text messages to express sympathy, but there are some advantages to this method of communication.

For one thing, you don’t have to reply to texts immediately. You also won’t have to try to talk with someone when you’re overwhelmed with grief.

This response lets the sender know you may not be up to face-to-face communication at the moment.

13. “Thank you. I know that he/she is in a better place now.”

When you believe in the afterlife, death is sometimes bittersweet. If your loved one suffered during a long illness, you may be thankful that he or she is at peace and not hurting anymore. And when you believe in heaven, you may rejoice thinking about the person being in the presence of God.

Share those thoughts with the person who texts. If the sender is a believer, he or she will understand your sentiment.

14. “Thanks for reaching out. I’ll talk with you soon.”

Anyone who has lost a close family member will understand how busy the days following a death can be. Don’t feel bad if you don’t have time for an extended text exchange. Respond in this way if you wish to thank the person but want to end the conversation.

15. “Thanks for being a great friend! I love you!”

Sometimes death inspires others to share how they feel with family and close friends. If you feel so inspired, text your friends. Or, better yet, tell them in person how much you love and appreciate them.

16. “I need some help. Would you be able to pick my uncle up from the airport?”

Close friends and extended family members want to be able to help, but they may not know what to do. After thanking someone for offering condolences and discussing the emotional aspects of the loss, consider asking your friend for assistance if you need it.

17. “Thanks. Dad wished to be cremated and have his ashes spread on the farm. We plan to have a service there sometime this spring. I’ll let you know those details as soon as I can.”

Your friend may be reaching out not only to offer condolences but also to find out service details. Since many funerals are held in the middle of the week, it’s nice to give attendees time to prepare and make work and travel arrangements.

18. “Thank you. I’m so thankful that my entire family was there at the end.”

Don’t feel like you need to put a positive spin on everything you do. However, some might reflect on the things they are grateful for following a loss. For example, perhaps you are thankful that you could help care for your parent or that they didn’t suffer long.

Responding to ‘I’m Sorry for Your Loss’ on Social Media

Sorry for your loss. Смотреть фото Sorry for your loss. Смотреть картинку Sorry for your loss. Картинка про Sorry for your loss. Фото Sorry for your loss

It’s become socially acceptable to announce the death of a loved one on social media. If you didn’t know all of the deceased’s contacts, this is a great way to inform them about the death of your family member.

What do you do when you receive sympathy messages on Facebook? Do you respond to each one separately? Or do you post another message thanking everyone for his or her condolences? Either method is probably acceptable.

19. “I know this is difficult for you, too.”

You may be an immediate family member of the deceased but others who send you messages may be in mourning, too. For example, maybe your mom or dad had the same best friend for 50 years. This person will obviously miss that relationship.

Acknowledge this special relationship — you aren’t the only one who’s grieving. Others feel it, too.

20. “Thank you for the message. I appreciate your kind words.”

You may receive sympathy messages from people you’ve never met after you announce a loved one’s death on social media.

Just because someone is a friend or acquaintance of the deceased doesn’t mean that you had any interaction with the person.

21. “I know you understand what I’m going through.”

Others who reach out to you may have lost someone, too. It would be kind to acknowledge this loss in your response.

22. “It’s so comforting knowing that there are people I can turn to in my time of need. I love you.”

If you receive a message from a close friend who you can always rely on, share your love with that individual. Sometimes it takes the death of a loved one to help us see who the important people are in our lives.

23. “Thank you for your kind words.”

Most would agree that “short and sweet” is an excellent way to respond on social media.

24. “Thank you for your comforting words.”

It might look odd to respond to every comment in the same way. Here’s another succinct example.

25. “Thanks. This verse from the Bible has been comforting me over the last several days: ‘And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.’ – Revelation 21:4”

Including a comforting Bible verse will bring reassurance to those reaching out that, while you are of course going through the process of grieving, you are finding hope within your faith.

🌻 Express your condolences with a sympathy gift.
Show your support to a grieving friend. Browse our hand-picked selection of gifts.

26. “My mom is singing with the angels today!”

If you believe in the afterlife, you probably enjoy imagining what your loved one is experiencing in Heaven. Maybe your loved one even told you what they were most looking forward to about Heaven. Share this with others.

27. “I saw you called the other day. I’m sorry I didn’t answer. It’s too hard to talk right now, but I will reach out soon.”

Friends who have never experienced loss may feel slighted if you don’t reach out to them in crisis. It might be helpful to explain what you are experiencing to some of your friends.

28. “Thank you for being a friend.”

We appreciate the support and kind words from friends when life is most difficult.

29. “Thank you for your prayers.”

Do you have a friend who is a prayer warrior? Thank them for their continued prayers. If you have a specific prayer request, you might want to use this opportunity to ask for it.

30. “I’ll let you know the funeral details as soon as they are available.”

If you are sure your Facebook friend will want to attend the funeral, reassure them that those details are forthcoming.

Our samples of messages will include a variety of scenarios that you might experience, including what to say to someone who reached out to you for professional reasons and was unaware that you had a death in the family.

31. “I would like to offer my appreciation to the entire team at Vance Refrigeration. I am thankful to have such kind and caring coworkers.”

If you feel overwhelmed by individual texts, emails, and calls, consider sending out a message to the entire team at once. Then, once things settle down, you can respond to individual messages if needed.

32. “Thank you for reaching out to me. I would love to help you with this matter, but instead, I will direct this message to my colleague Sara. Unfortunately, I am out on bereavement leave and plan to return to the office on the 25th.”

It might be difficult for you if your personal and work phone are on the same line. While you can ignore or forward emails, it’s not as easy to ignore incoming texts. Here’s a way to respond to one that has slipped through. And if the recipient responds by writing, “I’m sorry for your loss”? Respond, “Thanks.” You don’t have to explain the situation.

33. “Thank you! Thank you also for answering my forwarded emails for the next week or two. I know that this is a lot more work for you, and you are already overwhelmed with tasks. I appreciate you!”

It’s kind to recognize when others may be struggling because you are not able to be at work.

34. “I appreciate the kind words. I will talk with HR about bereavement leave and let you know the date I plan to return to work.”

It’s also kind to communicate with your coworkers so they know when to schedule meetings and how to plan during your absence.

35. “Thank you.”

We know that some of you have difficulty focusing on your personal life when there’s so much to do at work. However, the death of a loved one may encourage you to reexamine your priorities. So take time to experience all the emotions that come with grief.

36. “I appreciate your patience and understanding. I know things have been difficult in my absence, but we have a great team. I trust them to make the right decisions. Right now, I need to focus on my family.”

Here’s a thoughtful way to remind your coworkers that you can’t handle a work crisis at the moment.

Finding the Right Words to Say

You might be answering texts and messages as you make funeral arrangements. It’s a hard task, especially if you didn’t know what the deceased wanted. Did your dad want to be buried or cremated? What was mom’s favorite hymn? Where did your husband want to be buried? A lot of decisions need to be made.

Once you’ve planned your loved one’s funeral, you may start thinking about your own funeral arrangements. Start your end-of-life planning today so your family members don’t have to make those difficult choices for you someday.

What exactly does «I’m sorry for your loss» mean?

I find it strange when someone hears about another’s dead lover and he says «I’m sorry for your loss«. Why would they apologize when they have nothing to do with his or her death? Is there a better expression, something like «Don’t feel sad» or «It’s something natural»?

2 Answers 2

The word sorry doesn’t always mean «apologize.»

feeling regret, compunction, sympathy, pity,

«Sorry for your loss» means «I feel sympathy for your loss.»

My heart feels sore for you. My heart is sore-ry. I am sorry.

sor·ry (sr, sôr)
adj. sor·ri·er, sor·ri·est
1. Feeling or expressing sympathy, pity, or regret: I’m sorry I’m late.
2. Worthless or inferior; paltry: a sorry excuse.
3. Causing sorrow, grief, or misfortune; grievous: a sorry development.
[Middle English sori, from Old English srig, sad, from sr, sore.]

And he’s in no hurry to decide on a college path. The only person who ever made him think he could be more was his older brother Patrick, the family’s golden child. But that was before Patrick died suddenly, leaving Pup with a family who won’t talk about it and acquaintances who just keep saying, “sorry for your loss.”

The inspiration for this book came partially from a piece I read about Leonard Cohen’s final press conference before his death in 2016. When asked by a reporter about where he drew his inspiration from, Cohen gave this beautiful answer about how we create art as a way of articulating the emergency inside of us. I have been in love with that notion ever since.

I decided that I wanted my main character, Pup, to be a kid who is experiencing a serious emergency inside of himself, and who, because of who he is and the kind of family he comes from, has no way of articulating it. I wanted his discovery of photography to arrive like a life raft. I wanted him to fall in love with art, and in doing so, find a way to articulate his emergency and help him begin to heal.

“As we descend into the deep, the pressure increases relentlessly, and the light from above all but disappears. And yet there is life”—David Attenborough, Blue Planet II (the wonderful epigraph for Sorry for Your Loss)

“Sorry for your loss” is the kind of the thing that most of us say when we don’t know what else to say to others facing the death of someone close. Saying “sorry for your loss” isn’t necessarily a bad thing to say (though I am going to try to avoid saying it for a while if I can!), but it can be a replacement for actually speaking to someone more directly in order to actually help them to heal.

One of eight Flanagan children from an Irish Catholic upper north side Chicago family, Patrick wanted to be an oceanographer, exploring the abyssopelagic zones of the world’s oceans, but he died of meningitis while away at college. Grief, as Foley points, is an individual process; it always does some damage, but people handle it in different ways: They try to deny it, to erase the fact of the pain; they never move on; they drink. Each member of the Flanagan family handles the griefless than usefully. The main character of this story is the youngest child, James, also known as Pup; what part does Patrick’s death play in how poorly he performs in school, and what part of it is test anxiety or some related disability?

James meets Izzy who has also lost a brother, in their high school Bereavement Group (or Pity Party), working with a school counselor. In his grief, sensing a connection, he attaches himself to her, and she in some ways to him, but when he falls in love with her, she does not fall in love with him. He is basically flunking out of school, but when his drunken brother Luke is falling apart, he takes a photograph of him passed out. He’s committed to saving Luke, and changing his family to become more open and supportive of each other.

Art teacher Mr. Hughes helps him see the value of art in the role of healing. This reminds me of the art-as-healing in other YA books such as Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson or Okay for Now by Gary Schmidt. In the process he meets Abrihet (She who brings light), and they connect. I like some of the references in the book to Madame Bovary which help us understand the Izzy-Abrihet contrast.

I loved, loved, loved the connections to Leonard Cohen and the phrase “articulate the emergency inside you.” This is what James learns to do, and what he tries to help Luke and the rest of his family do. A great YA book about grief. Jessie Ann attended one of my classes recently and shared that the first draft of the book was a comedy of sorts about a boy with test anxiety, an issue she was familiar with as a former high school English teacher. One strength of this wonderful book is that (ala Hemingway’s iceberg theory of meaning) the basic foundation of this book is actually comedy, not tragedy, as there are a lot of funny lines and a commitment to family to better prepare us for dealing head-on with the grief.

I also loved (also making me think of Schmidt’s Okay for Now) that the book is organized into seven sections, each focused on seven elements of artistic composition: Shape, like, space, form, texture, value and color. As with the idea of «depth»—oceanic and emotional—that frames the story of «Flanland» in the epigraph and throughout, these elements require you to rethink the action in each section in terms of its corresponding element. Cool?!

Sorry For Your Loss was such an exquisite portrait of a family caught in the throes of grief. The emotions, at times, were so palpable, I actually found myself rubbing my chest, because my heart physically ached.

Pup was floundering in his grief, and continuing to let all these people in his life sort of treat him as an after thought. But, then he got a little nudge, and that push Pup needed came from an unlikely source. After almost a year of trying different artistic mediums, Pup’s teacher put a camera in his hands, and Pup was able to finally find his voice. It was really wonderful the way he was able to see things and share his feelings and pain via his art. I loved that this was part of his story for many reasons. One, because I really wanted Pup to find his thing. Two, because the drama with his unrequited love was awful, and he needed something to feel good about. Three, because it brought Abrihet into his life, and she was phenomenal for him.

This was definitely the story of Pup’s coming of age, but it was also about family. The Flanagans were stuck in their grief. Some seemed ok, but many were suffering and dealing with the loss in unhealthy ways. It was Pup, with his newfound voice, who pushed the family to take those steps towards «getting through». Some of the things he was forced to do were excruciating, but necessary. His family may have been very avoidant, but the one thing they didn’t lack was love for each other, and there was a lot of warmth in this story because of it.

I was so touched and impressed by this book, I immediately went to the library to check out more books by Foley. She did such a beautiful job painting these characters and crafting their story, and I know I am grateful to have had the opportunity to take this journey with Pup and his family.

Sorry for your loss. But why? [closed]

Basic questions on spelling, meaning or pronunciation are off-topic as they should be answered using a dictionary. See: Policy for questions that are entirely answerable with a dictionary

There are many times when at the time of giving condolence or showing sympathy to someone, we say «Sorry for your loss«. What does the word «Sorry» signify here? Why it is «Sorry for your loss» and not,» Sad to know about your loss«? The word sorry is used basically for apologizing then why not in this phrase?

‘Sorry’ is most often used to apologise, but it’s not the only meaning of the word.

Google’s dictionary has a pretty good definition:

«I was sorry to hear about what happened to your family»

«he said he was sorry he had upset me»

«he looks a sorry sight with his broken jaw»

In this case, it’s the first meaning. You’re expressing your sorrow for their loss.

«Sorry» (as used in this context) doesn’t automatically imply regret for something you have done wrong.

feeling sorrow, regret, or penitence

By saying «Sorry for your loss» you are saying «Sad to know», by expressing sorrow.

‘Sorry’ can mean any of the following :

In this context, the second meaning of ‘sorry’ is used. When we go somewhere to offer our condolences to a person who has lost somebody, we express a deep feeling of sympathy. That’s why we use «I’m sorry for your loss». It doesn’t mean that we are apologizing for that person’s loss, ie, the loss of a very dear person. Although it means «I am deeply saddened about your loss», the sentence, as such, isn’t used that commonly.

Instead of “Sorry For Your Loss,” Express Your Condolences With These Phrases

Sorry for your loss. Смотреть фото Sorry for your loss. Смотреть картинку Sorry for your loss. Картинка про Sorry for your loss. Фото Sorry for your loss

There’s no doubt about it, condolences can be extremely awkward.

The desire is to share your grief with another who is grieving even more, but that doesn’t feel quite right, does it?

Even in the moment, you feel it: a cringing brittleness rather than the embrace of solace.

The last thing you want to do is add to their pain, whether it be at the actual funeral or even by the time the bereaved have returned to the general flow of society.

So we generally say “Sorry for your loss.”

Yet are there any four words that drill inward deeper and heavier than those four by-the-numbers indicators of discomfort?

The phrase has become so overused there’s no way for it to be heard as anything other than obligatory – a token gesture – and even though it means well, every word is a barb.

“Sorry” sets the bereaved in a guilty space. Even when we’re in the throes of grief, we don’t want others suffering on our behalf.

Sorry is the word we hear from someone who’s wronged us, but in the context of grief, it becomes we’ve wronged you with an emotional burden that you’re politely trying to deflect.

“For” becomes the direct line connecting the bereaved’s dead to your discomfort.

“Your” isolates the bereaved, effectively saying that even though you may feel compassion for them, the true loss is theirs to deal with, not yours.

“Loss.” As if the bereaved could have held on. As if they weren’t able to maintain life for their loved one.

Loss. Someone is gone, and the bereaved cannot get them back.

No matter where they look they will not find them.

Everything that person was is no more.

All connective threads to them? Severed.

The bereaved, as the survivor, is alone.

A universe of hurt in the span of one breath. “Sorry for your loss.”

But in your offer of comfort, you don’t know this because the bereaved person musters a wan smile, a quick embrace, and – probably for one of multiple times before yours – successfully fights back tears in order to say, “Thank you.”

Can we do better? I think we can.

We have it in us to be gentler with our compassion, be genuine with our aid, and be truly unafraid to be there for someone.

What to say in situations where words are simply not enough?

1. I’m here for you.

This can be one of the most powerful things to say to someone who’s grieving. “I’m here for you.”

It doesn’t have to be a grand outpouring of emotion; compassion isn’t like a carnival game of reaching a certain level to ring a bell.

It should project the awareness that you’ll hold space for another, however they need it and on their time, allowing the bereaved to pour themselves into you in order to rest, recuperate, and reclaim a sense of connection after the trauma of a final goodbye.

Accompanied with a touch – perhaps a hug (hugs generally work best), perhaps the gentle taking of a hand, the moment will tell – this phrase tells the bereaved they are not alone…

…not alone in grief, not in their sense of solitude, not in having to shoulder sudden and massive amounts of uncertainty.

When we go through trials, even (or especially) the most common, most inescapable of trials, one that visits the world innumerable times a day, death, the most beautiful things we receive are the reassurances that we are not alone.

2. You have my heart and support.

As with “I’m here for you,” “You have my heart and support” bridges the sudden gulf from community to isolation a death can create in the mind of someone dealing with such a loss.

“My heart” tempers the hard edge of shared grief in a way that “sorry,” “sorrow,” or any variation of that grey, mournful word all fall short of achieving.

“You have my heart and support” isn’t a reminder of loss in the way “Sorry for your loss” is, but a promise of solidarity no matter how grief tries to tear one’s sense of normalcy down.

This is hugely important in grounding a person during a time of personal upheaval.

3. I wish you strength in your sadness.

Sadness is pretty much a given when a loved one dies. It’s as normal as anything possibly can be when a person’s world is turned upside down by grief.

Acknowledging that sadness and giving someone the freedom and space to be sad and display their sadness can be a blessing.

Quite often, the bereaved will feel like they need to remain stoic in the face of their overwhelming feelings. They may not even feel able to cry in front of others.

But this phrase gives a firm nod to them and says that it’s okay for them to be sad; that they can feel that sadness fully.

It expresses your wish for the person to find the strength to face their feelings openly and honestly rather than trying to repress them. After all, out of sight is not out of mind when it comes to the passing of a loved one.

4. Damn, that sucks.

If you’re on reasonably friendly terms with the other person, and you want to say something a little less formal, it’s perfectly okay to express how much the death of a loved one sucks.

Because it does. It really sucks to have someone taken away from you. And that person might simply want someone to acknowledge how much it sucks.

It’s about as honest and genuine as it gets. You’re not trying to compete with them by saying how you “know it’s hard,” because at the precise moment in time, you don’t. And you might never know.

But you can be pretty damn sure that whatever they are going through sucks big time.

5. There are no words…

No words will ever be enough to take away the other person’s pain, and nor she we try to.

And they know this. The various condolences they have received probably haven’t help all that much, so why try to find words when there are none?

Yes, this communicates that you don’t really know what to say, but the bereaved may actually find that quite comforting.

You’re not trying to say the “right” thing or avoiding the subject altogether; you’re simply saying something that they already know full well.

6. will be sorely missed.

When someone is grieving a person they care deeply about, they don’t want to forget them. They want the memories to live on vividly in their mind.

But when faced with the grief of another, many people avoid saying the name of the one who has died. Instead, they say “he” or “she” or “they,” perhaps to avoid causing more anguish to the bereaved.

Don’t do this. Use the person’s name. The bereaved will no doubt be longing to hear it spoken out loud.

It’s more personal. It’s a reminder that they were a human being with their own history and personality and likes and dislikes and quirks. There was more to them than a simple pronoun.

7. Let me help.

Perhaps this one doesn’t need to be said.

Despite all we do, consoling words will always feel like seeds on concrete under a roiling, grey sky.

We want to merge our hearts and minds with another’s to alleviate their pain, but words in the moment, not even those of poets, never quite feel adequate to the task.

When the bereaved have had time for reflection, maybe poets will do. Poetry can speak in ways the soul understands even when the mind doesn’t.

But there are times when the moment calls for the pure and simple silence of the unspoken entreaty: let me help; allow me to grieve with you; sit down, rest, be.

This can be communicated by a tight hug; by offering a box of tissues when needed without being asked; by helping the bereaved out of their seat or even literally offering your shoulder for their head to lay; there are a million ways to show you are there for someone.

Words bridge a gap. “Deepest condolences on your loss,” “sympathy for your loss,” “sorry for your loss” are mere shadows of what’s in your heart.

No matter what you decide to say to someone, make sure that it is helpful.

Uplift them, be with them, let them know that you are not just another specter in a pageant of pain, one that begins to disappear to them even before all the funereal social obligations have been fulfilled.

The bereaved will have enough ghosts to contend with; compassion must lead you to be substantial.

It’s never easy finding the “right” words. If it were easy, it’d be meaningless.

It’s said we’re at our most human when we’re sorrowful or joyful; everything in between gets muddled. Words of compassion should express our humanity.

These suggestions may help or may not. They’re not meant to become new rubber stamps in lieu of the ragged, cracked one many of us use now, they’re solely guides.

Life is best when we let humanity, empathy, and a willingness to lift the pains of others from their shoulders guide us, even when only for a moment.

A lot can be done and said in the span of a breath.

Speak comforts and speak them well.

They think I’m poppin’

They showin’ me love

All of a sudden my phone just erupt

I had a nigga who just hit me up

Didn’t you make fun of me on the bus?

People invitin’ me over for drugs

«Let’s write some bars»

Let’s not and say that we did

They think I do it for fun

I wish that was what it is

I do this shit for the pain

This shit just happens to knock

This shit just happens to slap

Wish I could stop

Then do it just ‘cause I want

That’s something none of you want

I’ve been the one since I was one

I could’ve told you but I rather show you

Shit I can’t help you if I got to know you and you ain’t still see it

Bitch you a dummy

You gotta beat it

If you were here and now you’re not

Please don’t hit me when this drops

Know you’re always in my thoughts

But I’m sorry for your loss, ayy

But I’m sorry for your loss, ayy

But I’m sorry for your loss, ayy

Know you’re always in my thoughts

But I’m sorry for your loss

You was lookin’ kinda lost

Mistook some juice for the sauce

Hope you wonder what it cost

Now it’s sorry for your loss, ayy

Now it’s sorry for your loss

Now it’s sorry for your loss

Hope you wonder what it cost

‘Cause now it’s sorry for your loss

I think that small talk is taxing

People ask me what I’m up to

I tell ‘em and they all act like it’s a bad thing

Like, «Oh wow, you doin’ the rap thing»

I hate how they say it

A couple years later when they see me eatin’ and they want a slice

I’ma say I don’t got it

Like «Don’t you remember? I do the rap thing»

And I know I can do it

Why I need so bad to prove it?

I always found that confusing

I just feel so disillusioned

Always jumpin’ to conclusions

You never loved me I knew it

I’m the same guy as before

People walk out and I lose it

If you were here and now you’re not

Please don’t hit me when this drops

Know you’re always in my thoughts

But I’m sorry for your loss, ayy

But I’m sorry for your loss, ayy

But I’m sorry for your loss, ayy

Know you’re always in my thoughts

But I’m sorry for your loss

You was lookin’ kinda lost

Mistook some juice for the sauce

Hope you wonder what it cost

Now it’s sorry for your loss, ayy

Now it’s sorry for your loss

Now it’s sorry for your loss

Hope you wonder what it cost

‘Cause now it’s sorry for your loss

Now I’m sorry for your loss

(When this drops)

Dad are you proud of me?

I know right now you are

But if we get to the end and you’re not would you lie to me?

You always big on the honesty

I don’t know if I could take that

I probably… do something rash

Tell the truth I’m so afraid of not comin’ in first I might purposely crash

In my nightmares I be sittin’ in last

Fresh outta gas

Reflecting on all the mistakes that I’ve made

And the cheap thread in the bed that I made

When I thought I was doin’ it right

Constantly doubting myself every night

Like, «I could’ve gone harder» and

«I should’ve called her» and

«Why I keep getting so high for?»

I’m just tryna catch me a vibe

They say my last shit a classic

But shit, what’s the point if I’m losing my mind?

Oh, I gotta give it time

Oh, I gotta love the grind

I don’t even love my life

But tell my mama that I’m fine

She got enough on her plate

I don’t wanna see her cryin’ just ‘cause I couldn’t hold my head up straight

But damn if I don’t wanna get away

And I’m not talkin’ ‘bout a trip on a plane

Does God see that as a spit in his face?

Tell the truth, man I don’t know

Dammit I just wanna grow

Into the person I’m meant to be

But I think somethin’ been stuntin’ me mentally

Like one I really feel myself

Then the next day I wanna kill myself

Always gotta keep it to myself so I don’t worry people with my mental health

Pray to God that when I need it though

It ain’t too late for me to yell for help

Really don’t wanna end up in hell

But I feel like if I stay here it’s just as well

I used to feel like the man

But that was two years ago

I gotta let it go

But for some reason I can’t

Wounds heal but I got hella scars

And that make me feel like I’m hella flawed

Wanna give up and I tell it to God

But He don’t give two fucks if I’m lost

For if for some reason by the time you hear this I am not here

I ain’t ever mean to make you drop tears

I just self-destructed and it’s no one’s fault

This was bound to happen since I got here

Fuck only seein’ my auntie in all of these photos

I’m outta this bitch

If they ask where I am tell ‘em that I’m about to go kick it with Moe Moe

Sorry for your loss

Перевод песни Sorry for Your Loss

Sorry for your loss. But why? [closed]
