Synopsis

The Book of Life is the journey of Manolo, a young man who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart. Before choosing which path to follow, he embarks on an incredible adventure that spans three fantastical worlds where he must face his greatest fears. Rich with a fresh take on pop music favorites, The Book of Life encourages us to celebrate the past while looking forward to the future. [3]

Mary Beth, a museum tour guide, takes a group of children on a tour of Mexican folk myths and legends. She tells them the story of the Mexican town of San Ángel from the Book of Life, which holds every story in the world.

The spirits La Muerte, ruler of the Land of the Remembered and Xibalba, ruler of the Land of the Forgotten, set a wager on San Ángel’s Day of the Dead festival after seeing two best friends, Manolo and Joaquín, competing over a girl named Maria. La Muerte bets that Manolo will marry Maria, while Xibalba bets on Joaquín. If La Muerte wins, Xibalba can no longer interfere in mortal affairs; if Xibalba wins, he and La Muerte switch realms. However, Xibalba cheats by giving Joaquin his Medal of Everlasting Life, which grants the wearer invincibility. Maria frees a herd of pigs from being slaughtered, causing her father to enroll her in a boarding school in Spain the hopes of removing her rebellious streak to become a proper lady instead. While saying their goodbyes, Manolo gives her a baby pig from earlier and she gives him a guitar engraved with «Always play from the heart» while Joaquín keeps her hat that flew off the train.

As an adult, Manolo’s musician dreams are suppressed by his father Carlos, who trains him to become a bullfighter like the rest of their family, while Joaquín becomes the revered town hero with the Medal’s aid, something he had aspired to since his father was also a hero. On the day of Maria’s return, a celebration is held culminating in Manolo’s first bullfight. Manolo defeats the bull but refuses to kill it, dismaying Carlos and the crowd but impressing Maria. That night, Maria is pressured by her father, the mayor of San Angel, to marry Joaquín so that he will stay and protect San Ángel from the bandit Chakal, though she is conflicted by her feelings for Manolo. Maria and Manolo meet before dawn to profess their love for each other, but they are interrupted when Xibalba sends a two-headed snake to bite her once, rendering her unconscious. Devastated by Maria’s assumed death, Manolo is tricked by Xibalba into being sent to the afterlife: the snake bites him twice, killing him.

At the Land of the Remembered, Manolo reunites with his mother Carmen and his illustrious deceased family members. They travel to La Muerte’s castle to seek Maria, but only find Xibalba, who explains the bet to Manolo and that the snake put Maria in a coma, but killed him. When Maria awakens, she learns of Manolo’s death and solemnly accepts Joaquín’s proposal. Manolo, Carmen, and Luis, Manolo’s grandfather, travel to the Cave of Souls to reach La Muerte. They meet the Candle Maker, who oversees the lives of everybody in the living world. After seeing that Manolo’s story in the Book of Life is blank and can be rewritten by Manolo’s own actions, the Candle Maker takes them to the Land of the Forgotten. Manolo finds La Muerte and exposes the cheating to her. Furious at Xibalba, La Muerte lectures him before another deal is negotiated; Manolo’s life will be returned if he completes a challenge Xibalba sets him, but if he fails, Xibalba will rule both lands and Manolo will be forgotten. Thinking that Manolo’s fear is bulls, Xibalba manifests every bull the Sanchez family ever fought, which merge into a giant one for Manolo to defeat.

In the living world, Chakal, who previously owned the Medal, leads his army to San Ángel to find it. Chakal kills Carlos, who joins the deceased to watch Manolo fight. Manolo, realizing his fear is actually being himself, again refuses to deliver the finishing blow, instead singing an apology to the resentment-filled spirit asking it to forgive his family’s transgressions, which it does by peacefully dissolving away. Impressed, the deities grant Manolo his life back and send him and his family’s spirits to the living world to defeat Chakal. Manolo is almost killed again when Chakal blows them both up, but is saved by the Medal which Joaquín pins on him at the last second. Joaquín returns it to Xibalba and resolves to be a hero of his own accord, while Manolo and Maria wed happily as Xibalba expresses his love for La Muerte once more, which the latter accepts and reutrns.

Back in the present as the children leave the museum, Mary Beth and the security guard shown earlier reveal themselves as La Muerte and Xibalba. The Candle Maker then tells the viewers to write their own story.

Если вы оказались в загробном мире, не спешите огорчаться. Возможно, это не угрюмое царство теней, а яркое и весёлое место, где вечно длится праздник… Знакомая ситуация? Да, мы это уже видели в «Трупе невесты» Тима Бёртона. Но, в отличие от бёртоновской картины, где буйство иномирья было противопоставлено унылым будням живых, в новом мультфильме «Книга жизни» все миры полыхают яркими красками. Оно и неудивительно, ведь действие происходит в солнечной Мексике.

Но это не стереотипная Мексика. Национальный колорит здесь не ограничен кактусами и сомбреро, а передан бережно и с любовью. Место действия не просто служит декорацией, но определяет собой весь сюжет мультфильма, основанного на мексиканском фольклоре. И работали над «Книгой жизни» тоже мексиканцы: режиссёр Хорхе Гутьеррес и продюсер Гильермо Дель Торо.

Чтобы попасть в такой загробный мир, и умереть не жалко.

Создатель «Лабиринта Фавна», «Хеллбоя» и «Тихоокеанского рубежа» славится зрелищными картинами, и в «Книге жизни» явно чувствуется его рука. Мультфильм в первую очередь привлекает внимание благодаря картинке. Во-первых, она необыкновенно яркая и сочная. Во-вторых, совершенно непривычная. Герои хоть и смоделированы на компьютере, но выглядят в точности как раскрашенные деревянные куклы. Поначалу это даже немного смущает — но потом ты с головой ныряешь в пёстрый водоворот красок и образов, и остаётся только восторгаться всё новым и новым выдумкам.

«Книга жизни» хороша не только картинкой. Здесь на редкость занимательный сюжет, который постоянно выделывает новые кульбиты. Одно событие сменяется другим, и стремительный экшен не утомляет, а наоборот, вызывает желание радостно хлопать в ладоши, как на празднике. Однако, как и у праздника, который лёг в основу сюжета, у «Книги жизни» есть важная и серьёзная смысловая подкладка. Конечно, мы уже слышали все эти вещи: надо быть добрым и честным, крепко любить, держаться за свою семью и следовать призванию. Но в этом ярком, даже хулиганском мультфильме прописные истины приобретают новое звучание и вовсе не воспринимаются как нудное морализаторство.

Xibalba is the central antagonist of the 2014 computer-animated film The Book of Life.

He first entered the plot of the film when he and his wife La Muerte made a bet concerning which of the mortals, Manolo Sanchez or Joaquín Mondragon would marry Maria Posada. In the book of life 2, the director said that they will look further in Xibalba’s and La Muerte’s relationship.

Appearance

When assuming a mortal disguise, he tends to take on the form of an elderly man.

Personality

Xibalba appears on the surface as sly, cunning and cruel. He is a manipulative trickster who will resort to lies and cheating to get his own way such. Despite this, he is not pure evil, rather mischievous than malevolent. He is very suave in manner and tends to be well spoken.

He believes that there is little to no good left in humanity and that it is beyond redemption. This may or may not be down to the jaded view he sees from his realm, the Land of the Forgotten.

He claims that the reason he meddles in mortal affairs is because it is the only fun he gets outside of ruling.Though he is calm and confident, he is too proud of himself. When Manolo angered him by shouting «He will pay for what he has done», Xibalba talks and approaches Manolo with pride stating » No one in any of the realms has ever talked to him in such a way and survived «, taunting him.

Despite his actions throughout most of the story, he truly does care for his wife, La Muerte and will attempt to please her, particularly towards the end. He also gains some form of respect for mortals who impress him. He’s quite capable of selfless love and admitting when he’s been proven wrong.

Abilities

Xibalba is extremely powerful, as expected from an immortal god. He is shown to be very adept in magical activities. It is also shown that Xibalba is deceitful, cunning and very intelligent, being able to devise elaborate plans that tilt the scales in his favor. Your knowledge of a person’s nature makes it easy for him to manipulation.

La Muerte

La Muerte is Xibalba’s wife. They have a complicated relationship due to their different beliefs and the completely different natures of the realms they rule. La Muerte believes that mortalkind still has some good in it while Xibalba believes there is no good.

Xibalba truly loves his wife and he quite literally melts at her touch. However, he has become very insecure around her ever since he cheated in their previous wager. Xibalba has shown to regret that decision and was more than willing to enter a new bet with her in order to keep her interested.

In the end, after Manolo and Maria are finally married, he gave La Muerte a heartfelt apology for his behavior and asked her to forgive him. She gladly accepted and pulled him in for a kiss. In the present day, he is still on good terms with La Muerte, apparently having renounced his old ways forever and redeemed himself once and for all. When the children from the museum tour leave, he and his wife share a tender moment and a very passionate kiss.

The Candle Maker

They seem to be good friends, although they have not been seen to interact much on the screen. Near the end, The Candle Maker embraces both La Muerte and Xibalba, proving he has no grudge against for the latter’s trap in his bet with La Muerte. Instead, Xibalba seems to find him irritating and annoying, but tolerable.

The Bible speaks of a book in heaven that lists the names of all the people who will inherit eternal life. Will your name be included in the Book of Life?

God reveals through His servants, the prophets, that He has a very special book. This is currently an open book containing a registry of names. God deems very precious the individuals whose names are being recorded in it.

The first mention of this Book of Life is when Moses offered to have his name erased from it. Speaking to God, Moses said, “Oh, these people have committed a great sin, and have made for themselves a god of gold! Yet now, if You will forgive their sin—but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written” (31 Then Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Oh, these people have committed a great sin, and have made for themselves a god of gold! 32 Yet now, if You will forgive their sin—but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written.”

God replied to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book” (verse 33). As noble as Moses’ intentions may have been to protect his fellow Israelites from God’s wrath, God will not negotiate with people’s salvation in this way.

Can a name be erased from the Book of Life?

At the end of the book of Revelation, a warning stands as a guard defending God’s truth. “For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life” (A Warning 18 For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

In the last days, there will be a global resurgence of a false religious system. God says this system of worship of a man will be synonymous with worshipping Satan the devil (4 So they worshiped the dragon who gave authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast? A promise to the faithful

It was revealed to John that “there shall by no means enter it [the holy city] anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life” (verse 27).

The prophet Malachi was given a message of correction and warning for God’s wayward people, the Israelites. God still loved His people, though they had strayed from His laws; but He now demanded honor, faithfulness and obedience from them.

This “book of remembrance” is a reference to the Book of Life. As Malachi noted: “Then those who feared the LORD spoke to one another, and the LORD listened and heard them; so a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who fear the LORD and who meditate on His name. ‘They shall be Mine,’ says the LORD of hosts, ‘On the day that I make them My jewels. And I will spare them as a man spares his own son who serves him’” (A Book of Remembrance 16 Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another, And the Lord listened and heard them; So a book of remembrance was written before Him For those who fear the Lord And who meditate on His name. 17 “They shall be Mine,” says the Lord of hosts, “On the day that I make them My jewels. What else does God keep a record of?

Even the struggles of trying to live a godly life against hardship and temptation appear to be recorded in heaven. David, who was destined to be Israel’s next king, asked God to remember his suffering during a low point in his life when he was surrounded by enemies. He said, “You number my wanderings; put my tears into Your bottle; are they not in Your book?” (8 You number my wanderings; Put my tears into Your bottle; Are they not in Your book?

Nehemiah may have been making reference to a heavenly record as he prayed: “Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for its services!” (14 Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for its services!

Is there also a record of men’s sins in heaven?

While the scriptures we have just seen do not necessarily imply that there is a written record of men’s sins, the reality is that God knows everything we do. And because God has perfect memory, there is indeed a record.

Thankfully, there is a way to have our sins blotted out and remembered no more by God (12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”

Through the prophet Ezekiel, God says, “Again, when a wicked man turns away from the wickedness which he committed, and does what is lawful and right, he preserves himself alive. Because he considers and turns away from all the transgressions which he committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die” (27 Again, when a wicked man turns away from the wickedness which he committed, and does what is lawful and right, he preserves himself alive. 28 Because he considers and turns away from all the transgressions which he committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die.

When people repent, God also declares through the prophet Isaiah: “I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; and I will not remember your sins” (25 “I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; And I will not remember your sins.

The basis of God’s judgment

These books represent the books of the Bible, which contain God’s law—the standard by which everyone’s deeds will be judged. “And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books” (verse 12).

John, still recounting his vision, then explained that an additional book was opened: “And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life” (verse 12). When the process of judgment is finished, the record of names will be examined and “anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire” (verse 15).

Are people predestined to be in the Book of Life?

Because of the wording of several scriptures that mention the Book of Life, some have wondered if God determined at the foundation of the world, prior to the existence of any human, whether or not each person would be in the Book of Life.

Passages from which this question arises include:

What exactly was predestined from the foundation of the world?

From the foundation of the world, God’s plan was predestined. God the Father and the Word (the One who came to earth as Jesus) agreed, from the outset, to the plan that the latter would die for the sins of mankind so humans could be forgiven of their sins and become part of God’s eternal family. This is clearly attested to in Revelation 13:8, where Jesus is referred to as “the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.”

In addition, from the foundation of the world, God predestined that some humans would be called in this age for an opportunity to become members of His eternal family, and the majority would be called later. Additional passages make it clear that humans are free moral agents who, upon receiving knowledge of God’s expectations, have to decide whether they will act on that knowledge or not.

Our loving God is not willing that any should perish. Instead, He wants all men to repent and be saved. This is why Jesus urged people to “repent, and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15). And this is why Paul spoke of God taking vengeance “on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Thessalonians 1:8). Noting that judgment had begun at the house of God, Peter asked, “What will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God?” (1 Peter 4:17).

Our loving God is not willing that any should perish. Instead, He wants all men to repent and be saved (2 Peter 3:9; 1 Timothy 2:4). The warnings issued by Jesus and His disciples and the clear desire of God would make no sense if God had purposefully created some humans to fail.

The Bible teaches that we humans must choose what course of action we will take and that we will be judged by God for the choices we make. In the next sections we will consider what God expects of us if we are to have our names written in the Book of Life.

What must I do to have my name in the Book of Life?

For God to record our names in the Book of Life, we must repent of our sins, be baptized and become spiritually converted. (See more about the process of conversion in our booklet Change Your Life.) La Muerte is a supporting character in The Book of Life.

She first entered the plot of the film when she and her husband Xibalba made a bet concerning which of the mortals, Manolo Sanchez or Joaquín Mondragon would marry Maria Posada.

Physical Appearance

Despite being as old and ancient as time itself, La Muerte retains her vision of youth and radiant beauty. She is made entirely of white sugar candy with knee-length black licorice hair that is tied in a low ponytail and multi-colored glowing eyes with aqua eyeshadow that are in shades of gold and red.

She wears a red dress decorated with cempasuchil (Mexican marigold flowers) all over her dress and marigold flowers with lit white wax candles at the hem of her dress. She also wears an extremely large, wide-brimmed sombrero bedecked with more lit candles and marigolds (her favorite flower), small skulls, pink-plumed, curly, swirly feathers and palm leaves. She also wears a circular gold locket on a choker.

Personality

La Muerte is a kind, truthful, sweet & generous goddess whose belief in the goodness and pureness of mortal-kind stems from her own heart, as well as from that of the departed and deceased mortal people who are now her citizens and subjects. She cares for everyone and anyone, no matter who they are, and will assist anyone who is need of her help, believing humankind to be completely pure. While La Muerte is very forgiving towards those who truly want to repent, she is also well known for her weakness for wagers. The only known bad side to her is when someone (i.e. Xibalba) cheats in wagers and bets, making her angry despite her sweet disposition.

In The Book of Life

La Muerte and her husband, Xibalba, have been estranged for over a thousand years. Due to having a previous bet, in which Xibalba cheated, she rules the Land of the Remembered, while he rules the bleak Land of the Forgotten. Upon arriving at San Angel together to observe The Day of the Dead festivites, La Muerte remarks that Xibalba’s heart has become as dark and cold as the land he now rules. The two have different ways of valuing human beings, as showed when La Muerte stops Xibalba from ‘taking’ an old man’s life. When Xibalba begs for her to trade lands with him, LaMuerte playfully teases and scolds Xibalba reminding him that he is down there by his own doing. She also says that he «is not the man [she] fell in love with all those centuries ago.»

Hoping to distract his wife and make a play for the Land of the Living, Xibalba suggests they make another wager. La Muerte is enraged at first, but accepts the idea of a betting game. This leads them to finding Manolo, Joaquin, and Maria playing together. This leads to La Muerte choosing Manolo as her champion and blessing him to always have a good and pure heart. As part of the bet, La Muerte makes her husband promise not to interfere with the affairs of man should he lose the wager. Xibalba agrees and the wager is set.

La Muerte reappears on the day Maria returns to town at the bullfighting arena where she slaps Xibalba for staring at Maria and cheers for Manolo when he appears in the arena. She appears after the fight when Manolo sings and Maria hears his anguished song, observing that the mortal girl was moved by Manolo’s words. La Muerte appears again, when Manolo serenades Maria on her balcony.

She is not seen again until Manolo, along with his mother and grandfather, reach the Land of the Forgotten to tell her that Xibalba cheated in their wager. Upon learning of this, La Muerte roars in anger. Xibalba appears, thinking his wife wishes to see him and reconcile. Instead he sees Manolo and his relatives along with his infuriated wife. Learning about Xibalba’s whole scheme involving the two-headed snake staff, and the Medal of Everlasting Life, La Muerte, along with Carmen and Manolo, demand Xibalba assist in bringing Manolo back to life. When he refuses, La Muerte tries to persuade him by calling him «Balby», but when he still refuses she becomes angered until Manolo suggests the alternative of his own bet. Offering up the right to give the Land of the Forgotten to her husband, La Muerte convinces Xibalba to give Manolo a fair chance.

La Muerte watches as Manolo meets his worst fear in the bull arena, and is happy to see him emerge victorious, as is the Candle Maker, and, to some extent, Xibalba. The three of them then give Manolo his life back. Later, the three of them use their powers on The Day of the Dead to bring Manolo’s deceased family back to help defend the town. After the town is saved and the Medal returned, La Muerte and Xibalba reconcile on the top of the church.

Back in the present day, the tour guide Mary Beth finishes her story and then leads the detention children back out to their bus. Waving goodbye and saying one of the names of the youngest girl, the guide reveals herself to have been La Muerte the entire time with the intention of teaching those children something about living and life.

Xibalba

Xibalba is La Muerte’s husband. They have a complicated relationship due to their different beliefs and the completely different, opposite antagonistic kingdoms, lands and realms they rule. La Muerte believes that humankind is completely good, true and pure. On the other hand, Xibalba thinks and believes that humankind is selfish, greedy, sinful, concerned only in its own interest. Despite their differences and occasional conflicts, La Muerte and Xibalba complement each other very well, and can’t live without each other.

When they are really on good terms, it is seen that they are very affectionate with each other. She’s addicted to his charms, and she knows that she is the only one who can change him. [5]

The Candle Maker

It is known that the two are good friends, although they have not seen that they interact much on screen. La Muerte is happy to see him when he appears in the Land of the Forgotten with Manolo and his family. Near the end, when Candle Maker embraces both La Muerte and Xibalba, although she is surprised at first then she smiles at him amiably.

The Book of Life is the third and final installment of the All Souls Trilogy. It was published on July 15, 2014 in hardback, e-book, and audiobook in the US, UK, Canada, and Ireland.

After traveling through time in Shadow of Night, historian and witch Diana Bishop and vampire scientist Matthew Clairmont return to the present to face new crises and old enemies. At Matthew ‘s ancestral home at Sept-Tours, they re­unite with the cast of characters from A Discovery of Witches—with one significant exception. But the real threat to their future has yet to be revealed, and when it is, the search for Ashmole 782 and its miss­ing pages takes on even more urgency. In the tril­ogy’s final volume, Harkness deepens her themes of power and passion, family and caring, past deeds and their present consequences. In ancestral homes and university laboratories, using ancient knowl­edge and modern science, from the hills of the Auvergne to the palaces of Venice and beyond, the couple at last learn what the witches discovered so many centuries ago.

The third book in the series opens with the deceased witch Emily Mather and vampire Philippe de Clermont, as ghosts, seeing Matthew and Diana arrive to Sept-Tours. They realize that Diana is pregnant with twins by Matthew. When Emily says that Diana has never liked change, Philippe responds it’s because Diana is afraid of what she must become.

Just before greeting Diana and Matthew upon their return to Sept-Tours, vampire Marcus Whitmore remembers how Diana’s beloved aunt Emily Mather died while Diana was away. Emily was at the temple dedicated to the goddess near Sept-Tours, as well as vampire Gerbert of Aurillac and witch Peter Knox. Marcus’ human fiancee, Phoebe Taylor, joins Marcus before they go out to greet Diana and Matthew. Phoebe is iron-willed and diplomatic.

At the same time at Sept-Tours, vampire Fernando Gonçalves cooks a tortilla española while talking with vampire Gallowglass about how Gallowglass saw Emily die. Peter Knox was touching Emily’s head, then, when Emily’s partner, Sarah, arrived and shouted her name, Knox released Emily, who crumpled to the ground unconscious and could not be revived. Fernando is the mate of the deceased vampire Hugh de Clermont, who was Gallowglass’ father. Gallowglass reveals that Philippe adopted Diana as a daughter with a blood vow. They see Diana’s familiar, a firedrake named Corra.

Sarah tells Diana the story of how Emily died, that Emily was using dangerous, higher magics to seek information from spirits about death and disaster that Emily was foreseeing. Knox was trying to read Emily’s thoughts but Emily died saying that she knew the secret of the book known as Ashmole 782 and that he would never possess it. Knox threatened investigation into breaches of the covenant, one purpose of which is to hide creatures from coming to the attention of humans. The nine-member Congregation is responsible for enforcing the covenant.

Matthew takes care of Diana while she grieves, and Fernando looks after Sarah. Matthew and Gallowglass discuss that Diana’s magical power has increased in the past months. Meanwhile, the ghosts of the deceased Emily and Philippe are joined by the ghost of witch Rebecca Bishop, Diana’s deceased mother.

Matthew walks around the grounds of Sept-Tours trying to keep his blood rage sickness under control. He then sees Gallowglass trying to keep Corra from damaging things accidentally. Matthew tells his friend, a daemon called Hamish, that Marcus has a mating bond with Phoebe. Hamish says that Marcus has done a great job as grand master of the Knights of Lazarus while Matthew was away with Diana. Marcus demanded the Congregation punish Knox and that the covenant be revoked. Matthew says that in order to protect the family from the Congregation, the head of the de Clermont family, his older brother Baldwin, forbade Matthew from seeking vengeance against Gerbert and Knox when they earlier facilitated a Congregation witch’s torture and interrogation of Diana.

Matthew meets Phoebe, sees her lie politely and convincingly, deciding that she would be a useful addition to the family. Fernando comforts and advises Matthew about the difficulties Matthew will face allowing Diana her freedom, despite Matthew’s blood rage compulsions to remain close to Diana. Fernando encourages Matthew to tell Marcus and Hamish about Matthew’s blood rage sickness. Matthew feels peaceful when he returns to sleeping Diana. He reflects that he always wanted a wife and children. He makes love with her, wanting the feeling of her safety and their intimacy to last forever. Thinking of how Emily died while Diana was away, Diana asks Matthew to never leave her without saying good-bye. He promises to never leave her.

Baldwin challenges Diana’s status as Philippe’s adopted daughter. One of Philippe’s vampire daughters is asked to formally recognize Diana as a de Clermont. Diana meets Fernando. Gallowglass confirms that Philippe adopted Diana. Diana finds out that Philippe used Matthew as the family’s assassin, taking advantage of the strength of Matthew’s blood rage. Diana finds out that Gallowglass discreetly watched after her since she was a child.

Philippe’s former squire, vampire Alain Le Merle, brings Diana her possessions kept safe since the 1590s: her spell box, other special valuables, and a golden arrowhead on a long chain. He also gives her Philippe’s letter that contains evidence that Philippe freely chose to make Diana his adopted daughter. The letter contains a coin, to be returned by Diana in person to the ferryman of the dead in the afterlife, and says to tell Matthew that Philippe would see Diana safe on the other side. The letter also reveals that somehow, Diana was able to keep Philippe company and be of comfort to him after Philippe was rescued from Nazi torture that severely injured him.

Diana meets Verin’s husband, a human called Ernst Neumann. Baldwin and Marcus argue about Marcus’ efforts to have the Congregation repeal the covenant. It is revealed that Baldwin is the de Clermont vampire member of the Congregation, and that the Congregation censured Knox and barred him from serving as a member of the Congregation because of Knox’ role in Emily’s death by heart attack. Knox claimed that Matthew has or had Ashmole 782, known as The Book of Life or the book of origins. The book is made from creature parts and may contain their DNA.

The Congregation will go to inspect Sept-Tours, so the daemons and witches must leave there. Ysabeau must go for a while to Gerbert’s house as a hostage to ensure the de Clermont’s good behavior. Diana tells Matthew that the top priority should be obtaining Ashmole 782 and its missing pages that Edward Kelley removed in 1591. Matthew tells Diana that it will be safest if he obeys Baldwin’s orders. Diana remembers that Philippe had told her to «think and stay alive.»

Marcus discovers the old family pedigrees, that his vampire father, Matthew, has a disowned vampire son, Benjamin, and that Matthew and Benjamin have blood rage sickness. Marcus is only a carrier. Matthew reveals that Benjamin had tried to betray the family’s secrets. Marcus finds out that if Matthew branches off from the de Clermonts as a scion, they can get out from under Baldwin’s control as head of the de Clermonts, but Matthew is skeptical. Baldwin would need to be willing to agree to it. Blood rage must be kept secret so the Congregation will not try to destroy those vampires and their families. The Congregation fears blood rage is back, because of recent, gory vampire murders.

Matthew finds out that there was a vampire-witch baby a long time ago and believes it would be useful to find out more about why some vampires and witches can have children together, like Matthew and Diana can.

At Baldwin’s request, Diana organizes a formal dinner for the household before Matthew, Diana, Sarah, Fernando, and others leave Sept-Tours. Diana believes Matthew forming a scion is a good idea and they discuss it. At the family dinner, Matthew toasts lost loved ones. Marcus announces that Phoebe will marry him and become a vampire. Miriam’s phone number shows up on Matthew’s phone, but it’s his son Benjamin on the line. Benjamin says he wants Matthew’s attention but Matthew knows that Benjamin is seeking something in particular. Baldwin tells Matthew to take care of the Benjamin problem. Diana announces that she is going to the Bishop house in Madison, New York, to try to find information Emily or Diana’s mother may have earlier discovered, possibly about The Book of Life.

Diana starts using her magical weaver skills to create new spells while at the Bishop house. Matthew is replacing fence posts outside for some peace of mind but he is thinking about Benjamin. Sarah is grieving for Emily now that she has returned home to where they lived together. Diana meets up with some witches at the store, who later visit and offer to help with some of Diana’s and Matthew’s problems. Diana realizes that she has discovered a new wish to belong to a community. Fernando encourages Matthew to focus on his scientific studies of blood rage and of The Book of Life. Matthew tells him that he doesn’t want Diana to become a vampire because he loves all that she currently is, even though he doesn’t want to lose her. Diana saves a child witch from the hot fireplace at the Bishop house and afterwards discovers that her weaver’s cords are now part of her hands and wrists. Diana reveals to Sarah and the other witches at the house that Diana is a weaver and has a familiar, the firedrake Corra. Diana and Sarah discuss that dark magic isn’t necessarily evil, and that nothing is more powerful than knowledge. Diana finds out that her mother, Rebecca, had been particularly skillful in higher magics.

Diana reveals to Matthew that she earlier gave the goddess the use of Diana’s life in exchange for having saved Matthew from death. Diana feels the twins she is carrying move in her. The Bishop house gives Diana her mother’s personal spellbook for higher magics, which also contains Diana’s caul, a powerful magical object. Diana’s friend, a Yale research scientist, Chris Roberts, comes to the Bishop house. He is told about the world of creatures, and their problems, and agrees to study blood rage, creatures’ genomes, and The Book of Life questions. Miriam calls and lets them know at the Bishop house that Benjamin has captured a witch, is raping her, and trying to make her bear a vampire-witch child for him. Someone has complained to the Congregation about covenant violations in Madison County of witches associating with vampires. Chris Roberts points out that creature segregation is not the answer, any more than racial segregation was. He says that it’s usually about concerns of racial purity. He thinks the existence of creatures will not be able to be kept secret from humans much longer.

Chris Roberts, Diana and Matthew go to New Haven, Connecticut. Diana hears the carillon at Harkness Tower. Diana and Matthew go to Chris Roberts’ Yale lab, which has graduate students who have signed nondisclosure agreements. Diana tells Matthew that students want their professors’ attention, honesty and faith in them. Matthew tells the graduate students that for scientists, the «whys come after the whats.» Miriam Shephard arrives and starts her role as the lab manager. Lucy Merriweather at the Beinecke Library helps Diana research the location of the missing pages from Ashmole 782, The Book of Life. Diana realizes her purpose as a historian is to rediscover forgotten truths. Diana finds out that Peter Knox has recently been seeking the location of Ashmole 782 as well. Lucy goes with Diana to the lab, where they have discovered that the page they have from Ashmole 782 weighs much more than a regular page, and that Ashmole 782 is a magical container that could contain much more than they imagined. Surprising Diana, her adopted son shows up, Jack Blackfriars from the 1590s, having been turned into a vampire by Andrew Hubbard to prevent him from dying from the plague. Jack Blackfriars turns out to have blood rage, and needs Matthew to teach him how better to control it. It also turns out that Matthew’s son Benjamin is the vampire who had turned Andrew Hubbard into a vampire. Diana and Matthew’s adopted daughter, Annie, from the 1590s died from the plague before Andrew Hubbard could help her. Benjamin had been exploiting Jack’s blood rage to make him a killer, trying to get him to turn humans into vampires. Andrew Hubbard has one of the missing Ashmole 782 pages that Jack had been keeping safe for Matthew and Diana, who receive the page. Andrew Hubbard reveals that Benjamin is looking for The Book of Life.

Matthew goes to help Jack with his blood rage while Jack is living at Gallowglass’ condo in New Haven, Connecticut. Chris Roberts tells Matthew that he took blood samples from Jack and that he has discovered that blood rage cannot be cured. Baldwin shows up and accesses Jack’s memories via his blood. Diana then arrives and uses her magical power to restrain Baldwin. Everyone leaves the condo except Baldwin and Matthew. Baldwin tells Matthew to kill Jack, for his blood rage and because he was the vampire murderer who had been in the news. Matthew goes home and takes Diana to a mountain park where they see the moon. It is Mabon, one year from when they first met. Matthew tells Diana that prevention and symptom reduction of the blood rage might be possible, but not a cure. Diana urges Matthew to form a scion, a separate branch of the de Clermont family to protect Jack, and their other close relatives from other vampires and the Congregation. Matthew says that vampires believe in law, honor and justice. Matthew agrees to try to obtain the support of the other close relatives to form his own scion, while Diana stays safely away from him, looking for the missing page from Ashmole 782. Their separation would be incredibly difficult for both of them.

Gallowglass flies with Diana to Europe. He tells Diana that Phoebe is OK, that she has a strong spine and a stout heart, just like Diana. Diana discovers tattoos on Gallowglass’s arm showing that Gallowglass is in love with Diana. They agree that Diana and Matthew are soulmates however. Ysabeau persuades Gerbert it’s OK for her to leave imprisonment in Gerbert’s home. Gerbert had been focusing on social media and surfing the Internet to the extent of not noticing Ysabeau’s covert activities while at his house.

Diana, Sarah and Diana’s close friends and family members go to stay at the London house that Matthew gave Diana. Diana stays in a room designed by Matthew to look like a forest at night under the stars and moon, with magical imagery. Phoebe tells Diana she will resign from Sotheby’s in preparation to become a vampire. Ysabeau starts to teach Diana how to help lead a branch of a vampire family, called a scion. Ysabeau tells Diana that the Congregation will try to kill Matthew, Jack and anyone else with blood rage once that information is discovered. After a long sleep, Diana examines the Kircher books that she requested be obtained so she can try to find the Ashmole 782 page that has a Tree of Life image on it, before anyone else can find it. Ysabeau obtains the name T.J. Weston as the owner of the Tree of Life image and Phoebe obtains many possible addresses for that person, mostly in South England. Fernando joins Matthew’s scion. Sarah brings Diana to the Blackfriars in London where they meet witch Linda Crosby. Diana remembers being happy with Matthew at the Blackfriars in 1591. Sarah tells her that somehow she has to figure out how to be happy in the present, by being herself, not pretending to be otherwise, doing what she needs to do, and keeping her family together. Diana and the others try to determine where she can use magic to determine the location of T.J. Weston. Ysabeau suggests the upstairs ballroom that has Trojan War frescoes that she doesn’t like. Diana visits Linda Crosby’s coven meeting place and discovers that the coven has remembered her as a powerful witch from her visit in the 1590s, and weaver Ursula Shipton’s prophecy that a weaver would come along who would bring hope, rebirth and change, a new golden age for creatures. Using her compendium, Corra’s help, and a locator spell, Diana finds out that Chipping Weston is where T.J. Weston and The Book of Life page may be.

Diana and others go to the Old Lodge. Amira senses the blood and fear in the Ashmole 782 pages that Diana has brought, one of which was made from a witch’s skin. She says that the witch cursed the book when other witches killed her husband, before the witches killed her. When Diana and others go to Chipping Weston, they find T.J. Weston, who turns out to be the daemon Timothy who Diana had met at the Bodleian Library. He has the Tree of Life page that was made from his grandfather’s skin. As long as Diana promises to remember his grandfather, Timothy says he will give her the page. He says that Diana is the one who will learn how it all began, blood, death and fear, and that she is the one who will put a stop to it. Diana and the others make some plans how to obtain The Book of Life from the Bodleian. The goddess comes to Diana and adds an arrow to Diana’s body as a weapon for her to use. At the Bodleian, Benjamin takes Phoebe hostage, threatens Diana and the twins with whom she is pregnant, and is stopped by Ysabeau. Diana feels guilty that she was too afraid to use magic to stop him. Ysabeau calls Baldwin. Diana is put on bed rest. Gallowglass chooses not to tell Matthew about what happened.

Matthew is in New Orleans persuading and threatening Marcus’ vampire children so they will join Matthew’s new scion branch of the family. To obtain Ransome Fayrweather’s pledge, Matthew has to recite the names of Ransome’s relatives and other vampires that Matthew killed in New Orleans, some of whom were killed to protect the family from the vampires’ blood rage being discovered by the Congregation. Fernando arrives and tells Matthew he has joined his scion. He encourages Matthew and Jack Blackfriars to make decorative cradles for the twins, which is a healing activity for them. Chris Roberts arrives and tells Matthew that it appears that blood rage can’t be cured because it is a heredity genetic condition. Fernando tells Jack to remember that if you truly love someone, you will cherish what they despise most about themselves.

Fernando tells Matthew what happened with Diana, and Matthew returns to her. They spend time together, reconnecting emotionally and telling each other about what happened to each of them during their time apart. Matthew tells her that she doesn’t need to blame herself for not killing Benjamin. Jack and Matthew present to Diana the cradles they made out of rowan wood. Matthew tells Diana he had figured out that Gallowglass was in love with Diana. They both hope Gallowglass finds his mate. Matthew and Marcus discuss Matthew’s Bishop-Clairmont scion or clan. They all find out that the witch Benjamin captured has died, as well as Benjamin’s child that she was carrying. Diana realizes that Benjamin will be coming for her next, and her water breaks. While she is laboring, Matthew tells her that to every question he ever had or will have, she is the answer. The twins are born healthy, first Rebecca and then Philip, named after grandparents. Baldwin tells Matthew that someone must be watching because the Congregation somehow already knows about the births. Benjamin calls Matthew to show that he knows too. Diana determines that Rebecca needs to consume blood in addition to milk, for the vampire part of her. Verin and Baldwin arrange for Diana to be confirmed as a de Clermont in the Congregation’s records. Ysabeau gives Diana and Matthew a grand house in Limousin called Les Revenants, so they can spend time with the twins there as a family. They look in Philippe’s personal papers for information about the early days of the Congregation, vampire-witch hybrid children, Benjamin’s past activities, and about The Book of Life. Matthew discovers a letter that implies that Benjamin may be in Central Europe.

After awhile, the twins are christened at the goddess’ altar near Sept-Tours with Knights of Lazarus and others attending, and at the nearby church. Baldwin shows up at the church and Matthew tries to coerce him into agreeing to the establishment of Matthew’s scion. Marcus tells everyone there that Matthew’s blood rage is under control and that the Knights of Lazarus will support the existence of the scion. Diana tells Baldwin she will magically spellbind any vampires in Matthew’s scion who act on their blood rage. Benjamin’s stillborn daughter’s fetus is discovered to have been brought to the church, with a threatening note.

Matthew tells Diana he wants to grow old with Diana. Diana gives him a holiday gift of some silver hairs among the black. Although Matthew is the head of the Bishop-Clairmont family, he says that Diana is its heart, and the heart is more important. Ysabeau gives ponies to the twins for the winter holiday, and her horse Rakasa to Diana. Jack shows his gift: an emblem design to represent the new scion. Matthew leaves to find Benjamin, and Diana goes to Oxford to find The Book of Life and insert the missing pages. They know someone of Gerbert’s or Benjamin’s is watching them.

Diana speaks with Matthew by phone when he is near Germany. She reminds him to be careful, especially because the goddess warned her that she would have to give up something if she wants to possess Ashmole 782. He tells her to remember that only love makes us truly immortal.

Diana and those with her try various unsuccessful methods to locate Ashmole 782 in the Bodleian Library, but she does not use Corra for this because she is afraid of what might happen. When she goes outside for some air, Gallowglass appears and tells her that Benjamin has Matthew. She realizes that Matthew is essential to her, and that to save him she will have to give up her fear of her own power. She goes back inside the library and lets Corra help find the missing Ashmole 782, which is hiding in plain sight in the library’s book holding cage. Corra is freed from being Diana’s familiar, although her power stays with Diana. Diana puts the missing pages back into the book, seeing that the book contains vast knowledge, including that the Bright Born are vampire-witch hybrids, which is what the twins Philip and Rebecca are. Then, all of the contents of the book transfer into Diana’s eyes and on her skin.

Baldwin sends Diana to Venice to represent the de Clermont family at the Congregation meeting, to seek its support as the family and the Knights of Lazarus go to rescue Matthew, and to stop Benjamin from continuing his centuries of raping and killing. Baldwin tells Diana that he knew Matthew was ready to lead his own family because he didn’t succumb to blood rage in the church when Baldwin challenged him.

Diana brings The Book of Life and goes to the meeting in Venice. Diana realizes that Satu is a weaver. She meets Congregation members, daemons Osamu Watanabe and Tatiana Alkaev, witch Sidonie von Borcke, and a friendly witch, Janet Gowdie. Gerbert Cantal and Sidonie von Borcke want to prosecute the de Clermonts, and Domenico Michele doesn’t want to accept that Diana is Philippe’s blood-sworn daughter. Gerbert and Domenico want to destroy all the vampires with blood rage and their children. Diana opens The Book of Life for the Congregation members, who realize it is made from the bodies of creatures. They see that the text has transferred to Diana’s skin and eyes. Diana explains that weavers were killed because other witches feared their power. Janet reveals that her ancestors include a witch-vampire hybrid, and a witch called Isobel Gowdie whose lover was the vampire Benjamin, also called Nickie-Ben by the witches in her home country of Scotland. Diana finds out that the Bright Born, such as Diana’s children, may live much longer than a human life span, retaining their youthfulness until the end. Sidonie accuses Janet of sullying her family’s reputation by admitting that it is mixed witch-vampire. Diana thinks that people like Sidonie use the covenant as an excuse for their fear and dislike of those who don’t conform, but that by blending the different types of creatures their special abilities would be better retained over the generations. After the meeting, Janet shows Diana that she has a concentration camp prisoner number just like Philippe did. Philippe was captured when he was trying to liberate the camp, Philippe obtained her promise to assist Diana when she met her at some future time. At Janet’s suggestion, Diana obtains Satu’s vote for the de Clermont motion by threatening her with exposure as a weaver. Satu would be at risk from Benjamin as well as the Congregation, unless the covenant is revoked. Satu is not sorry for having tortured Diana in the past and threatens Diana’s children. Diana spellbinds Satu so she can no longer perform magic. The de Clermont motion wins the next day.

Diana joins Baldwin and the others in Chelm at the buildings where Benjamin has imprisoned Matthew. Under Fernando’s leadership, the Knights of Lazarus successfully kill Benjamin’s vampire children who are outside the buildings, enabling Diana and Janet to discreetly remove Knox’ magical protections from the perimeter of Benjamin’s stronghold. Diana sees Matthew in agony in a number of rooms, but they are only Knox’ magical illusions. Finally, Diana uses magic to blow off all the doors and runs into Knox. Knox reveals that he killed her parents, that he stole Emily Mather’s thoughts and stopped her heart, that he wishes that he had magically opened up Diana to find her secrets, and that he believes Benjamin will force her to bear Benjamin’s children so that stronger witch-vampire hybrids will be created. He thinks witches will rule over the other warmbloods and the vampires. Diana uses her weaver’s magic to enable the spirits of dead weavers from the Book of Life to destroy Knox and to avenge her parents and Emily.

One night, Diana wakes to Matthew’s touch. His damaged hands are working again. He strokes her and sees words from The Book of Life on her skin. He says that he sees her, even when she hides from the rest of the world. «I hear you, even when you’re silent,» a pure definition of love.

Baldwin and Matthew tell Diana she must go to Venice to meet with the members of the Congregation and seek an end to the covenant, with the argument that it was established due to Medievalists’ fear of an imbalance of power among the types of creatures if more powerful, mixed bloodlines were allowed to exist. Instead, inbreeding has led to a lessening of the witches’ power and fertility, the Vampires’ ability to create new vampires, and the Demons stability. To make this argument, the existence and persecution of blood rage vampires would have to be discussed with the Congregation. Diana would argue that upbringing and self-control would help with the symptoms of blood rage. The entire family (and several other supporters) work to gather documentation from the time when the covenant was created to support Diana’s argument to dissolve the covenant.

Miriam Shephard and Chris Roberts bring lab evidence to Diana and Matthew that having some daemon DNA is part of what enables witches to become weavers and blood rage vampires to conceive children with weavers. The conclusion is that the creatures are not a completely separate species, thus the covenant isn’t relevant. Creatures are just humans with a difference. Diana also discovers that Gerbert had been feeding information about the de Clermont family to Benjamin for centuries. Ysabeau’s spying while in Gerbert’s house enables her to coerce his cooperation in the Congregation’s vote to abolish the covenant, especially since Gerbert had been consorting with daemons and even illegally turned one into a vampire.

Diana goes back to the library, realizing that The Book of Life in her body includes elements of witch, daemon and vampire. She can use her abilities for justice rather than pursuing vengeance or power. Matthew is researching with Chris Roberts, Miriam and Marcus in Chris’ lab, preparing to reveal someday the genetic basis of creatures as part of human evolution. Matthew and Diana see a picture of Sarah and Agatha happy together on holiday, now more than a year after Emily’s death. They discuss the birthday party coming up to celebrate the date of Matthew’s rebirth as a vampire. They see Jack’s new painting of them, Diana realizing that a willingness to change is the secret of survival, and that the combination of their opposite characteristics makes them both stronger. Diana and Matthew were the tenth knot, unbreakable, without beginning or end.

Название пришлось изменить, зато содержимое оказалось соответствующим первоначальной задумке. «Трупу невесты» Тима Бертона стоит подвинуться, Армии мертвецов прибыло!

Если бы не своеобразная форма анимации, «включиться» в картину можно было бы гораздо проще, но авторы выбрали неожиданно гротесковое представление героев своей истории, персонажи фильма словно сошли с картин Дали или Босха. Поначалу это вызывает оторопь, но очень скоро зритель погружается в рассказ, и дальше из цепких лап мексиканского фольклора уже не вырваться. Не нужно обманываться указанием страны-производителя, «Книга жизни» – продукт мексиканский, и начинается он с того, что Мексика объявляется центром вселенной, а центром этого центра назначается городок Сан-Анхель, где и разворачиваются замечательные со всех сторон события. Скорость сюжет при этом набирает недюжинную, на зрителя в первые десять-пятнадцать минут вываливается столько информации, что детям «переварить» ее, возможно, будет непросто. Зато взрослые будут довольны.

Любые заигрывания с не самой детской темой были бы бессмысленны, не будь у «Книги жизни» внятного, аргументированного, мотивированного поведения героев. Как и любой фильм, лента ненавязчиво поучает, причем охватывает довольно широкий спектр наказов, от уважения к старшим и охраны памяти об ушедших в мир иной до привычных для мультфильмов самопожертвования, отваги и честности. Только самые положительные черты характера и огромная любовь помогают Маноло преодолеть преграды Шибальбы и притянуть взор Марии. Причем все поучения поданы ненавязчиво, в легкой игровой форме, понятной даже самым маленьким зрителям.

Кроме неожиданных дизайнерских и визуальных решений «Книга жизни» может похвастать прекрасным саундтреком, порой весьма неожиданным. Когда герой вместо серенады начинает петь возлюбленной радиохэдовский Creep или перепевает на собственный лад знаменитую Can’t Help Falling in Love with You, это как минимум веселит. Больше того, в фильме наличествуют и музыкальные номера, написанные специально для картины, довольно неплохие. Увы, отечественный зритель лишен возможности насладиться оригинальным звуком (а над озвучкой фильма поработали не самые последние актеры), но пусть это станет дополнительным мотивом пересмотреть ленту в будущем еще раз с возможностью выбора звуковой дорожки.

Если не знать, что́ происходило на вершине горы, вся сцена выглядела удивительно тихой и спокойной. Галлоглас достиг развалин храма вскоре после Маркуса. Да, только тишина и фигура Эмили Метер. Ведьма стояла на коленях внутри круга, граница которого была обозначена белыми камешками. Рядом находился колдун Питер Нокс. Его руки лежали на голове Эмили, а на лице застыло выражение предвкушения и даже голода. Был и зритель – Герберт из Орильяка, ближайший из соседей-вампиров. Он с интересом смотрел на происходящее.

Нокс, вздрогнув, отпустил Эмили, и она без сознания рухнула на землю. Сара атаковала колдуна всего одним, но очень могущественным заклинанием, отчего Нокса буквально сдуло с вершины.

– Нет, Маркус ее не убивал, – сказал Фернандо, вновь заставив Галлогласа поднять голову. – Но его небрежность…

– Небрежность, – повторил Фернандо, – сыграла роль в этой трагедии. Маркус это знает и принимает ответственность на себя.

Фернандо легко сжал плечо Галлогласа и вернулся к плите.

Сильнее всех появление Фернандо в Сет-Туре удивило Галлогласа, ведь Фернандо сторонился замка с XIV века, когда погиб Хью де Клермон, отец Галлогласа.

– Я здесь, потому что в свое время, когда французский король казнил Хью, Мэтью бросил все и примчался меня поддержать. Я тогда был совсем один, если не считать моего горя. – Голос Фернандо сделался хриплым. – А возглавить орден Рыцарей Лазаря я отказался, потому что не являюсь де Клермоном.

– Ты был интимным другом, истинной парой моего отца, – возразил Галлоглас. – Ты такой же де Клермон, как Изабо или ее дети!

Фернандо осторожно закрыл дверцу духовки.

– Я остаюсь истинной парой твоего отца, – не поворачиваясь к Галлогласу, сказал он. – И твой отец никогда не станет для меня тем, о ком говорят в прошедшем времени.

– Прости, Фернандо, – пробормотал потрясенный Галлоглас.

С момента гибели Хью прошло почти семьсот лет, но Фернандо так и не оправился от потери. «И вряд ли когда-нибудь оправится», – подумал Галлоглас.

– А что касается моей принадлежности к де Клермонам, – продолжал Фернандо, по-прежнему глядя в стену над плитой, – Филипп возражал против этого.

Галлоглас возобновил свое нервное занятие. Пространство вокруг него заполнялось темными катышками воска. Фернандо налил два бокала красного вина и поставил их на стол.

– Выпей лучше, – сказал он, протягивая бокал Галлогласу. – Тебе сегодня тоже понадобятся силы.

В кухню стремительно вошла Марта, домоправительница Изабо. В этой части замка хозяйкой была она и очень не любила, когда кто-нибудь вторгался на ее территорию. Недовольно поглядев на Галлогласа и Фернандо, Марта принюхалась и рванула дверцу духовки.

– Это же моя лучшая сковородка! – с упреком воскликнула Марта.

– Знаю. Потому и взял ее, – ответил Фернандо, делая глоток.

– А тебе, дон Фернандо, вообще нечего делать на кухне. Иди наверх. И Галлогласа с собой забери.

С полки над мойкой Марта сняла чайник и пакет с чаем. Затем взгляд ее упал на соседний столик, где вместе с чашками, блюдцами, кувшином молока и сахарницей на подносе стояла кастрюля, обернутая кухонным полотенцем. Марта нахмурилась еще сильнее.

– Чем тебе мешает мое присутствие? – спросил Фернандо.

– Ты к слугам не относишься.

Марта развернула полотенце, подняла крышку и с явным подозрением принюхалась к содержимому кастрюли.

– Любимое блюдо Дианы. Помнишь, я спрашивал, какие блюда она любит, и ты мне рассказала? – Фернандо печально улыбнулся. – В этом замке все служат де Клермонам. Единственная разница, что тебе, Алену и Виктуар за это щедро платят. Остальные, похоже, должны быть благодарны за предоставленную привилегию.

– С полным основанием. Другие манжасаны [2] Окситанское слово «манжасан» означает «пожиратель крови», «кровопийца». Аналог слова «вампир». мечтают стать частью этой семьи. Постарайся не забыть об этом в будущем и не свалять дурака, дон Фернандо, – сказала Марта, сделав особый упор на его знатном титуле. Она взяла чайный поднос, невозмутимо добавив: – Кстати, твоя яичница подгорает.

Фернандо помчался к плите.

Черные глаза Марты остановились на Галлогласе.

– А ты не сказал нам всего, что должен был рассказать о Мэтью и его жене.

Галлоглас виновато уткнулся взглядом в бокал с вином.

– Мадам бабушка разберется с тобой позже, – ледяным тоном произнесла Марта и удалилась из кухни.

– Что еще ты натворил? – спросил Фернандо, убедившись, что Марта соврала и его тортилья – хвала Всевышнему – ничуть не подгорела.

– Не смотри на меня так! – огрызнулся Галлоглас. – Мне показалось неуместным рассказывать о ребенке. Ты знаешь, как женщины относятся к подобным темам. А о клятве на крови Филипп рассказал тетушке Верене в тысяча девятьсот сорок пятом году, перед своей смертью. С тех пор она ни словом не обмолвилась! – добавил Галлоглас, будто оправдываясь.

– Это что еще за чертовщина?

Фернандо распахнул дверь кухни, заслоняя глаза от яркого солнца.

– Думаю, это была невероятно разозленная ведьма, – хмуро ответил Галлоглас. – Скорее всего, Сара уже сообщила Диане и Мэтью о смерти Эмили.

Фернандо указал на колокольню церкви в Сен-Люсьене. Вокруг нее летало двуногое огнедышащее существо. Галлоглас встал, присмотрелся.

– В общем-то, я и о Корре умолчал. Не стал пугать почтеннейшую публику. Лишь предупредил, что тетушка Диана вернется из прошлого изменившейся ведьмой.

– Дорогая, это правда. Эм умерла.

Несколько слов, сказанных Диане и Мэтью, обернулись для Сары сильнейшим стрессом. Ей даже привиделся дракон. Прав был Фернандо: ей нужно расставаться с виски.

– Я тебе не верю! – выкрикнула Диана.

Голос племянницы был высоким, пронзительным, грубым от охватившей ее паники. Диана принялась обыскивать большую гостиную Изабо, словно Эмили могла прятаться за спинкой одного из витиеватых барочных диванчиков.

– Диана, Эмили здесь нет. – Приглушенный голос Мэтью был полон нежности и сострадания. – Она покинула наш мир, – добавил он, подходя к жене.

– Нет! – Диана попыталась оттолкнуть мужа и продолжить поиски, но Мэтью схватил ее за руки.

– Сара, прими мои глубокие соболезнования, – сказал Мэтью, крепко прижимая Диану к себе.

– Не смей говорить о соболезнованиях! – взвизгнула Диана, пытаясь вырваться из цепкой хватки вампира; ее кулак молотил Мэтью по плечу. – Эм не умерла! Это просто кошмар! Мэтью, пожалуйста, разбуди меня. Я хочу проснуться и убедиться, что мы по-прежнему в тысяча пятьсот девяносто первом году.

– Это не кошмар, – тихо возразила Сара.

– Диане лучше присесть, – сказал Маркус, выдвигая стул.

Во многом сын Мэтью оставался таким же, каким Диана увидела его впервые, когда в конце октября прошлого года он вдруг появился на крыльце дома Бишопов: парнем лет двадцати пяти, заядлым путешественником по Интернету. И кожаный шнурок со странными вещицами, собранными за несколько веков, по-прежнему болтался в его светлых волосах, стукаясь о затылок. На ногах – все те же любимые им хайтопы фирмы «Конверс». Новым был сдержанный, печальный взгляд.

– Но почему ей хотелось одиночества? – спросила Диана, сразу улавливая в голосе тетки смущение и какую-то недосказанность. – Что здесь вообще происходило?

– Где-то с января Эм стала обращаться к высшей магии за советом и водительством. – Сара отвернулась; ей было невмоготу видеть потрясенное лицо племянницы. – Эм стали донимать жуткие предчувствия смерти и несчастий. Она рассчитывала с помощью магии узнать их причину.

– Но Эм всегда сторонилась высшей магии, поскольку считала ее слишком опасной для ведьм. – Диана говорила все громче. – Эм была осторожной в таких делах. Я помню ее слова о том, что ведьмы, заигрывающие с высшей магией, на собственном горбу убедятся, до чего это опасно.

– Нокс утверждал, что де Клермоны владеют утраченными страницами из Дианиного манускрипта и знают его тайны, – включилась в разговор Изабо. – Мы с Вереной сказали ему, что он ошибается. А потом он увидел маленькую Маргарет и забыл про манускрипт.

– Натаниэль и Софи последовали за нами к развалинам храма. Софи взяла с собой Маргарет, – пояснил Маркус, увидев изумленный взгляд отца. – Чувствовалось, что Эмили вот-вот потеряет сознание. Вокруг тела Дианы появилось непонятное свечение. Она вдруг стала похожа на медленно разгорающуюся свечу. Сара заморгала. Нет, нужно пойти и хорошенько проспаться. И больше – ни капли виски.

Мэтью с племянником переглянулись. Поток слез из глаз Дианы нарастал, а вместе с ним усиливалось таинственное свечение. Мэтью смотрел на жену со все большей тревогой.

– Мэтью проводит тебя наверх, – сказал Галлоглас.

Он протянул Диане мятый желтый шейный платок, заслонив ее от собравшихся.

– Что с ней? – спросила Сара.

– Устала немного, только и всего, – ответил Галлоглас.

Без дальнейших пояснений они с Мэтью увели Диану в башню.

Mary Beth is a museum tour guide and a supporting character in The Book of Life, who narrates the life story of Manolo’s adventure and journey to a group of young kids who visited museum. She is later revealed to be a human disguise for La Muerte.

Mary Beth is a beautiful and attractive young woman who wears a blue jacket over a white dress, a white bandanna on her neck, and black high heels. She has long red hair, blue eyes, red lipstick, and wears small blue hat on the side of her head.

Mary Beth is a very kind lady and can be somewhat playful as she led The Detention Kids into the secret room. She is very patient and even motherly with the kids in her care. She is a bit mysterious and unpredictable.

In The Book of Life

Mary Beth was first seen outside the museum where she would take the kids on the Tour for Thomas, however when she heads up the stairs and doesn’t go to the museum door, Sanjay pointed to where the door was but she said that they aren’t like the other kids and wanted them to see something special she then leads them through an secret door.

As they are walking Mary Beth then tells them that it November 2nd which was «El Día de los Muertos» (Day of the Dead) when suddenly a spooky guard named Guicho appeared out of the dark scaring the children and said that they can’t go this way but she was able to make him change his mind and give him a kiss on the forehead, they then continue down the hall.

In a huge room full of folkloric artifacts from mexico, Mary Beth she shows them a big book called The Book of Life and a trunk with many wooden dolls, which according to her «represented real people» in the story she wanted to tell them: the story of Manolo, María and Joaquín. Three mortals who had been chosen by La Muerte and Xibalba in their most recent bet. Whoever wins would have control of the Land of the Remembered.

Back in the museum, after Manolo’s death, the kids were shocked. Sasha was about to cry, but Mary comforted her by assuring the little girl that the story wasn’t over yet.

When the story ends with a happy ending for the three protagonists, Mary closes the book and informs the kids that the bus is waiting for them outside the museum.

While the kids say goodbye to her, she is then revealed to be La Muerte in a human disguise.

The first book in Harkness’s beloved All Souls series, A Discovery of Witches, was an instant New York Times bestseller and the series has since expanded with the addition of subsequent NYT bestsellers, Shadow of Night (2012), The Book of Life (2014), and Time’s Convert (2018), as well as the companion reader, The World of All Souls. She has received Fulbright, Guggenheim, and National Humanities Center fellowships, and her most recent scholarly work is The Jewel House: Elizabethan London and the Scientific Revolution.

The Book of Life (Movie)

Jorge R. Gutiérrez is returning to the world of the dead. The filmmaker is officially developing a sequel to The Book of Life, the animated film centered around Dia de los Muertos, EW can confirm.

The Dallas-based animated house ReelFX is on board to produce. No discussions have yet been made with 20th Century Fox or the original voice cast, but the general concept of the story is in place.

“We’re just starting the process of developing,” Chuck Peil, executive vice president of strategic partnerships, tells EW. Peil remarked there is “a much bigger story to tell” and potentially “more worlds to explore.”

The Book of Life premiered in 2014 (EW gave it an A-). Guillermo del Toro produced the Golden Globe-nominated and Annie Award-winning film, which featured the voices of Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana, Channing Tatum, Ron Perlman, Christina Applegate, and Ice Cube. The film followed Manolo (Luna), a kind-hearted musician who’s separated from his love, María (Saldana), when a meddling god sends him to the Land of the Remembered. In the film, the tale was one of many contained within The Book of Life, a tome read to children by a museum tour guide.

After the movie’s release, Gutiérrez whipped together a poster for an imagined The Book of Life 2, solely for the Sequels Art Show, an exhibition featuring posters for potential movie sequels. The film “resonated with so many people, emotionally, viscerally, and the fan base is alive and well,” Peil said.

Variety was the first to report the news of the sequel’s development during the Annecy International Animated Film Festival. When the announcement became public, Gutiérrez clarified over Twitter that The Book of Life 2 and another project, Kung Fu Space Punch!, “would have to happen after I direct something they haven’t announced yet…”

Ghosts didn’t have much substance. All they were composed of was memories and heart. Atop one of Sept-Tours’ round towers, Emily Mather pressed a diaphanous hand against the spot in the center of her chest that even now was heavy with dread.

Does it ever get easier? Her voice, like the rest of her, was almost imperceptible.

Not that I’ve noticed, Philippe de Clermont replied shortly. He was perched nearby, studying his own transparent fingers. Of all the things Philippe disliked about being dead—the inability to touch his wife, Ysabeau; his lack of smell or taste; the fact that he had no muscles for a good sparring match—invisibility topped the list. It was a constant reminder of how inconsequential he had become.

Emily’s face fell, and Philippe silently cursed himself. Since she’d died, the witch had been his constant companion, cutting his loneliness in two. What was he thinking, barking at her as if she were a servant?

Perhaps it will be easier when they don’t need us anymore, Philippe said in a gentler tone. He might be the more experienced ghost, but it was Emily who understood the metaphysics of their situation.

What the witch had told him went against everything Philippe believed about the afterworld. He thought the living saw the dead because they needed something from them: assistance, forgiveness, retribution.

Emily insisted these were nothing more than human myths, and it was only when the living moved on and let go that the dead could appear to them.

This information made Ysabeau’s failure to notice him somewhat easier to bear, but not much.

“I can’t wait to see Em’s reaction. She’s going to be so surprised.” Diana’s warm alto floated up to the battlements.

Diana and Matthew, Emily and Philippe said in unison, peering down to the cobbled courtyard that surrounded the château.

There, Philippe said, pointing at the drive. Even dead, he had vampire sight that was sharper than any human’s. He was also still handsomer than any man had a right to be, with his broad shoulders and devilish grin. He turned the latter on Emily, who couldn’t help grinning back. They are a fine couple, are

they not? Look how much my son has changed.

Vampires weren’t supposed to be altered by the passing of time, and therefore Emily expected to see the same black hair, so dark it glinted blue; the same mutable gray-green eyes, cool and remote as a winter sea; the same pale skin and wide mouth. There were a few subtle differences, though, as Philippe suggested. Matthew’s hair was shorter, and he had a beard that made him look even more dangerous, like a pirate. She gasped.

He is. I fattened him up when he and Diana were here in 1590. Books were making him soft. Matthew needed to fight more and read less.

Philippe had always contended there was such a thing as too much education. Matthew was living proof of it.

Diana looks different, too. More like her mother, with that long, coppery hair, Em said, acknowledging the most obvious change in her niece.

Diana stumbled on a cobblestone, and Matthew’s hand shot out to steady her. Once, Emily had seen Matthew’s incessant hovering as a sign of vampire overprotectiveness. Now, with the perspicacity of a ghost, she realized that this tendency stemmed from his preternatural awareness of every change in Diana’s expression, every shift of mood, every sign of fatigue or hunger. Today, however, Matthew’s concern seemed even more focused and acute.

It’s not just Diana’s hair that has changed. Philippe’s face had a look of wonder. Diana is with child—Matthew’s child.

Emily examined her niece more carefully, using the enhanced grasp of truth that death afforded.

Philippe was right—in part. You mean “with children.” Diana is having twins.

Twins, Philippe said in an awed voice. He looked away, distracted by the appearance of his wife. Look, here are Ysabeau and Sarah with Sophie and Margaret.

What will happen now, Philippe? Emily asked, her heart growing heavier with anticipation.

Endings. Beginnings, Philippe said with deliberate vagueness. Change.

Diana has never liked change, Emily said.

That is because Diana is afraid of what she must become, Philippe said.

Marcus Whitmore had faced horrors aplenty since the night in 1781 when Matthew de Clermont made him a vampire. None had prepared him for today’s ordeal: telling Diana Bishop that her beloved aunt, Emily Mather, was dead.

Marcus had received the phone call from Ysabeau while he and Nathaniel Wilson were watching the television news in the family library. Sophie, Nathaniel’s wife, and their baby, Margaret, were dozing on a nearby sofa.

“The temple,” Ysabeau had said breathlessly, her tone frantic. “Come. At once.”

Marcus had obeyed his grandmother without question, only taking time to shout for his cousin, Gallowglass, and his Aunt Verin on his way out the door.

Now it only made Marcus think of the petite, iron-willed woman before him.

“Everything will be all right.” Phoebe reached up and straightened his collar, her olive eyes full of concern. Marcus had taken to wearing more formal clothes than concert T-shirts around the same time he’d started to sign his letters Marcus de Clermont instead of Marcus Whitmore—the name she’d first known him by, before he had told her about vampires, fifteen-hundred-year-old fathers, French castles full of forbidding relatives, and a witch named Diana Bishop. It was, in Marcus’s opinion, nothing short of miraculous that Phoebe had remained at his side.

Time AND Money saver

needs a revamp

i use this app religiously but it needs an revamp BAD. the UI looks like it hasnt changed since day 1 and itd be nice if i could see my friends activity more often than i see ads on my feed 😑. would be nice if we could personalize our profiles, but not necessary. also recommendations or searching through genres could be greatly enhanced by further filtering of intended audiences—i dont want to scroll through twenty 20 childrens fantasy books before even finding one mediocre adult fantasy book im not interested in. ABSOLUTELY would benefit from half star rating system or even 10 star rating system im tired of seeing a 3 star review with “3.5 stars …” or a 1 star review with “0.5 stars…” in the actual review. the app is also not super user friendly and is generally clunky. lots of unnecessary tapping needed and idk what it is but the searching function is super clunky too. i feel like the search option should first search our shelves for matches before searching the rest of the database for matches. definitely need a multi-select option to make shelving multiple books easier. i have over 300 books in my read im not reshelving each individual book, jeffrey. add tags in reviews so we can filter by tags. basically more filtering options for everything. add private reviews only your friends can see so that they dont affect the overall review of the book (sometimes you can acknowledge a book is well-written and still hate it).

Hi Goodreads. PLEASE ADD THESE THINGS

This app is wonderful. It is almost perfect. BUT every person I’ve talked to who uses Goodreads have all been in agreement it would be a GAME CHANGER if these were added:
1) A 0.5 star option. It sounds silly but it can be so frustrating deciding if a book it 4 or 5 stars. If there was a 4.5 option for example, I think all my life problems would be solved.
2) Private ratings. I’m sure if you’re an app developer you know of Letterboxd, and for me personally, if some similar features could be added to Goodreads that would make it just *chefs kiss*. For example: one of my favorite things about Letterboxd is how your ratings don’t account to a larger average rating for a movie (but in this case it would be a book). You can rate a movie and write your OWN review describing how that movie fit into your personal taste. I would love to see this on Goodreads in a way in which I could do a private review (almost like a personal diary) rather than a public rating. Sometimes i’ll read a book and recognize it’s objectively a great book, but I might give it two starts because maybe that sub-genre of fantasy romance wasn’t up my alley, so maybe that review would be nice to have in a personal journal rather than a public one because my review is sort of niche. I hope this makes sense. :))) I LOVE THIS APP.

A Conversation with Deborah Harkness about The Book of Life

Q. When you first began the All Souls series, you were also writing about wine for your award-winning wine blog and teaching at USC. How did you find the time to write a novel? What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Every novel that has ever been written was written one word at a time, one page at a time. That’s how I wroteA Discovery of Witches—and indeed all of the books in the All Souls Trilogy. As time went on, and my life became a bit more complicated, something had to go. I haven’t blogged about wine in years, though I’d like to get back to it one day. My advice to writers is simply to make writing a daily practice, like breathing. Don’t psych yourself out, and don’t take on a whole novel at once. One word at a time. One sentence at a time. One page at a time. That’s how it’s done.

Q. In The Book of Life you elegantly wrap up all the mysteries you introduced in A Discovery of Witches, including why creatures weren’t allowed to intermarry, what was hidden within Ashmole 782, and who committed London’s “vampire” murders. Did you have the entire arc of your fifteen-hundred-plus page saga sketched out from the very beginning?

Roughly speaking, I did. Some of the characters surprised me here and there, appearing and disappearing when they felt like it, so I had to jiggle some details but I did always know those features of the arc. The hard part was not giving too much away too soon.

Q. You preface each section of The Book of Life with astrological information taken from an “Anonymous English Commonplace Book, c. 1590.” Did you write these yourself, or are they drawn from an actual text?

They are drawn from several early modern astrological texts printed in England in the sixteenth century, including a translation of French astrologer Claude Dariot’s A Briefe and Most Easie Introduction to the Stars (1583). A man like Matthew would have owned such a book, and astrological information was often copied into commonplace books. I was always amazed at how closely the astrological information in these texts related to the plot of the book.

Q. Your field of study, the Elizabethan Era, predates the mapping of the human genome by more than four hundred years. What inspired you to make Matthew a geneticist and to bury the secret of blood rage in the vampire’s noncoding DNA?

I wanted Matthew to be a geneticist because of his theological difficulties. The questions of who Matthew was, and what his purpose was, unified his faith and his science in important ways. In my period of study, science and religion were not oppositional—they were complementary. As for the noncoding DNA, that was simply the best “mysterious” option back in 2008. Since then, noncoding DNA has become more important to geneticists, but I couldn’t have predicted that then.

Q. Was researching genetics more or less difficult than researching alchemical texts?

For me? Much more difficult. I’m a historian of alchemy, so I’ve been researching those texts since 1982. But I’m not a scientist, don’t work in a laboratory, and (until recently) didn’t keep up on the scientific literature on topics near and dear to Matthew’s heart. Now, I read so many scholarly articles on the subject that I get emails with subject lines like “Problems running your agarose gels?”

Q. Your storytelling prowess testifies to your skill as a weaver witch, but if you could choose another identity, would you want to be a vampire, daemon, or another type of witch? What is the one creature power that you wish you could have?

You know, I think I’m happy being human. Witches bear too much responsibility, vampire lives are long and challenging, and daemons are chronically misunderstood. I would like a vampire’s private jet, though. Does that count as a superpower?

Q. Who—besides Matthew and Diana—are your favorite characters from the series? Do you still think about your characters and what they might be up to now?

Philippe is my favorite character. In many ways he is the central character of the entire All Souls Trilogy. But I truly do love all of my characters, with the exception of Benjamin Fox.

Q. J. K. Rowling has famously expressed regret over the fact that Hermione marries Ron instead of Harry. In retrospect, is there any part of the series that you wish you had resolved differently?

Really? I think Hermione and Ron are perfect for each other! I wish Emily didn’t have to die, but there was no other way and I wouldn’t change it now, even if I could.

Q. In the academic realm, a print run of 5,000 is considered substantial. Did you ever dream that you would become a #1 New York Times bestselling novelist with millions of copies in print around the world? How has your success affected your academic career?

Um, no. By the way, I believe my first academic book had a print run of 750. Seriously, who could imagine such a thing? I hoped—hoped, mind you—that someone would publish it so that I would have an excuse to write the rest of the story. But I never imagined that people would read it in Croatia and Japan. The hardest thing to reconcile between my academic career and my career as a novelist are the schedules. Academic schedules are made up well in advance, while publishing schedules change at a very different rate. So the hardest thing for me is saying no to things I would love to do—both academic and in terms of meeting readers—because I can’t be in two places at one time.

Q. Has writing fiction changed the way you approach your academic work?

Absolutely. I’m struck all the time by the ways that the available historical evidence won’t permit me to demonstrate what I believe to be true. I can only argue what I can prove to be true, with the evidence. This is entirely right and proper, but I’m glad that I have fiction so that I can expand the limits of “truth” slightly.

Q. What is the most surprising comment you’ve ever received from a fan?

“Your book made me a reader.” What courage, to take on a book longer than 500 pages when you don’t love reading! But I’m glad that they took the risk.

Q. Do you have any details to share about the planned BBC adaptation?

Yes, I will continue to write fiction. I have lots of stories to tell. No, I’m not going to tell you what I’m working on now—but I am working on something, and I hope that readers will find it exciting.

We also learn that Gallowglass has fallen deeply in love with Diana. How did this knowledge affect your opinion of him? Are there ways in which he might have made Diana a better mate than Matthew?

Upton Sinclair

Upton Beall Sinclair, Jr. was an American author who wrote close to one hundred books in many genres. He achieved popularity in the first half of the twentieth century, acquiring particular fame for his classic muckraking novel, The Jungle (1906). To gather information for the novel, Sinclair spent seven weeks undercover working in the meat packing plants of Chicago. These direct experiences exposed the horrific conditions in the U.S. meat packing industry, causing a public uproar that contributed in part to the passage a few months later of the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act. The Jungle has remained continuously in print since its initial publication. In 1919, he published The Brass Check, a muckraking exposé of American journalism that publicized the issue of yellow journalism and the limitations of the “free press” in the United States. Four years after the initial publication of The Brass Check, the first code of ethics for journalists was created. Time magazine called him «a man with every gift except humor and silence.» In 1943, he won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

Sinclair also ran unsuccessfully for Congress as a Socialist, and was the Democratic Party nominee for Governor of California in 1934, though his highly progressive campaign was defeated.

Вчера я дочитала третью книгу цикла Деборы Харкнесс об истинной любви между ведьмой и вампиром, поиске древнего манускрипта и сопротивлении устаревшим обычаям магического мира. Повествование «Книги жизни» логично завершает историю, начатую в первой и второй книгах.

Все три книги связаны общими героями, к которым успеваешь привязаться. Писательница, на мой взгляд, отлично показала как современную эпоху, так и историческое прошлое. Герои перемещаются по разным странам и континентам, много внимания уделено деталям и культурным особенностям. Чувствуется интеллектуальность автора и ее любовь к искусству, а также то, что к написанию произведений подошли с должным вниманием.

Итак, время, потраченное на трилогию, не прошло зря. Я осталась очень довольна, а теперь могу взяться за просмотр сериала…

“The Book of Life” bedazzles your eyes and buoys your spirits as it treads upon themes most commonly associated with the macabre universe of Tim Burton. But instead of being gaga for ghoulishness, this Mexican fiesta of animated splendor is packed with visual delights far more sunny than sinister as they burst forth as if flung from an over-packed piñata.

A collaboration between fledgling Reel FX Creative Studios and 20th Century Fox, “The Book of Life” is a rare cartoon feature that doesn’t just deserve to be seen in 3-D, but practically demands it. Complementing the eye candy is a quirkily eclectic soundtrack, including catchy new songs by award-winning score writer Gustavo Santaolalla and Paul Williams of “The Rainbow Connection” fame, and a wide-ranging voice cast. If you always wanted to hear opera great Placido Domingo sing “Cielto Lindo” and its “ay-yai-yai-yai” refrain as if it were Verdi, here is your chance.

That said, the basics of this fantastical fable, whose ingenious puppet-like character designs draw upon the familiar wooden folk-art figures associated with the annual celebration of The Day of the Dead, are somewhat overly familiar despite all the rich cultural references that spice up the proceedings.

There is the ever-popular love triangle in the form of three childhood amigos. Our main hero, the tender-hearted Manola (Diego Luna, whose boyish vocals are a constant source of plaintive pleasure), comes from a long line of legendary bullfighters and is skilled in the ring himself. But his true calling is that of a guitar-strumming troubadour. The boastful Joaquin (Channing Tatum, who taps into his abundant reserve of amusing swagger) is a man of action, a mucho-macho mustachioed bandit-rustler with a broad chest crammed with medals.

The Book of Life’s multi-tiered plot also involves dueling married deities who reign over separate domains in the afterlife and decide to make a wager. La Muerte (well-known telenovela star Kate del Castillo), who oversees the cheery Land of the Remembered and believes in the decency of mortals, bets that sensitive soul Manolo will win Maria’s hand. Xiabalba (Ron Perlman, a pet actor of the film’s producer, Guillermo del Toro), a devious sort who rules the dour Land of the Forgotten, backs the vain Joaquin.

Xiabalba fools Manolo into entering The Land of the Remembered to seek Maria, when it turns out she has only fallen into a “Sleeping Beauty”-style slumber. In order to return to The Land of the Living himself, Manolo must undergo a series of challenges involving his colorful ancestors. Meanwhile, San Angel is being threatened by the fearsome bandit Chakal (whose metallic monster form feels like a del Toro invention) and his gang of nasty thieves.

A three-way romance, multiple worlds, numerous feats, combative gods, a monstrous foe – all these layers make for a rather dense confection. But first-time feature director and co-writer Jorge R. Gutierrez (co-creator of Nickelodeon’s “El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera”) smartly tames his somewhat unwieldy story by cleverly having a modern-day museum guide (Christina Applegate) transfix a group of rowdy school kids by relating the tale we are watching as if it were a fable of old.

Where this device comes in handiest is when the subject of death is broached and the children think Maria has really passed away. As one dismayed boy exclaims, “Maria died? What kind of story is this? We’re just kids.” Gutierrez thoughtfully deflects any parental concern about dealing with a potentially morbid subject with a refreshing directness that goes beyond such iconic animated tragedies as the deaths of Bambi’s mother and Simba’s father in “The Lion King.”

There is genius to be mined in the smaller details, something that Gutierrez excels at as he playfully mixes mythology both real and invented with pop-art touchstones. From a chorus of angelic singing nuns and hirsute town elders whose protruding snouts recall the hippie era’s Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers to pigs-gone-wild mayhem and a tipsy mariachi trio who slur their way through Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy” and Biz Markie’s “I’m Just a Friend,” “The Book of Life” isn’t afraid to catch us off guard. When a forlorn Manolo, abandoned by the townsfolk after refusing to kill a bull in the ring, starts to wail Radiohead’s “Creep,” you could hear teen girls at my screening yelp in joyful recognition.

But Guiterrez even goes a step beyond, as “The Book of Life” personifies the philosophy that drives The Day of the Dead and encourages a healthy way to celebrate those who are gone. As he puts it, “As long as you remember those who came before you, and as long as you tell their stories, cook their dishes, and sing their songs … they’re with you. They live inside your heart.”

And this filmmaker’s heart definitely beats inside this impressive debut.

10 Things You Need to Know About the «Lamb’s Book of Life»

On several occasions in Scripture we come across reference to something called “the book of life” or “the Lamb’s book of life.” What is it and why is it important that we know?

1. There was an Old Testament «book of life.»

In the OT the “book of life” (or its equivalents) was a register of the citizens of the theocratic community of Israel. To have one’s name written in the book of life implied the privilege of participation in the temporal blessings of the theocracy, while to be erased or blotted out of this book meant exclusion from those blessings. In other words, this book had reference to the rights of citizenship for the Jewish people (cf. Ex. 32:32; Ps. 69:28; Isa. 4:3).

“So Moses returned to the Lord and said, ‘Alas, this people has sinned a great sin. They have made for themselves gods of gold. But now, if you will forgive their sin – but if not, please blot me out of your book that you have written.’ But the Lord said to Moses, ‘Whoever has sinned against me, I will blot out of my book’” (Ex. 32:31-33; cf. Ps. 69:28; Isa. 4:3).

2. Not all of God’s «books» are the Lamb’s book of life.

The concept of a “book” was also used to portray God’s all-inclusive decree; i.e., the very days of one’s life are ordained and written in God’s “book” before one of them occurs:

“Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them” (Ps. 139:16).

But this does not appear to be the same as the Lamb’s book of life.

There is also the notion of “books” of judgment in which are recorded men’s deeds. They serve as that by which or from which one shall be judged:

“And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done” (Rev. 20:12; cf. Dan. 7:10).

Again, however, this is not the same thing as believers having their names inscribed in the Lamb’s book of life from the foundation of the world.

3. The Lamb’s book of life lists those who have been (and are to be) saved.

On most occasions where the Lamb’s book of life is mentioned it refers to the register of those who have been chosen for salvation from eternity past. It is not temporal or earthly blessings that are in view, but participation in the eternal kingdom of God as recipients of eternal life. For example:

“But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect” (Heb. 12:22-23).

“But nothing unclean will ever enter it [the New Jerusalem on the New Earth], nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life” (Rev. 21:27).

4. Only the elect are written in this book.

It would appear from several texts that not all are written in this book, but only the elect. In Revelation, the terminology of “earth dwellers” or “those that dwell on the earth” is a standard designation for non-believers. These are the ones who “worship” the Beast (Rev. 13:8a). They are the ones “whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain” (Rev. 13:8b). Thus it would appear that to be one whose name has been written down before the foundation of the world is simply another way of saying that he/she is elect (see Eph. 1:4).

5. Paul makes an important reference to this book in Philippians.

The Apostle Paul spoke of his co-workers as those “whose names are in the book of life” (Phil. 4:3):

“I entreat Euodia and I entreat Syntyche, to agree in the Lord. Yes, I ask you also, true companion, help these women, who have labored side by side with me in the gospel together with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life” (Phil. 4:2-3).

This appears to be the grounds on which he makes his appeal that they all learn to get along in love and unity, especially the two women in Philippi who were in some sort of conflict (Euodia and Syntyche). Those who are the objects of divine election, who, in spite of their well-deserved damnation nevertheless have been sovereignly and graciously chosen by God to inherit eternal life, should respond to such an immeasurable blessing by doing everything they can to get along and to work in harmony for the sake of the gospel.

6. All the names written in the book of life were inscribed in eternity past.

We see this in Revelation 13:8 and 17:8. There are two ways of translating Revelation 13:8, both of which are grammatically possible:

(1) “whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain” (ESV); or,

(2) “whose name has not been written in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain from the foundation of the world.”

The parallel statement in Revelation 17:8 clearly indicates that (1) is correct. There we read:

“The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to rise from the bottomless pit and go to destruction. And the dwellers on earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world will marvel to see the best, because it was and is not and is to come” (Rev. 17:8).

Also, whereas it can certainly be said that the Lamb of God was “foreknown before the foundation of the world” (1 Peter 1:20) and that he was “delivered up [to die] by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God” (Acts 2:23), what can it possibly mean theologically to say that the Lamb of God was “slain from the foundation of the world”? The point of the text is that the people who worship the beast do so because their names have not been written in the book of life.’ That is why they are deceived by the Beast.

7. You don’t believe in Jesus in order to have your name written, but because your name has been written.

People often ask: “What must one do to have his/her name written down in the Lamb’s book of life? Can someone whose name is not now written in the book do something, such as believe in Jesus, so that his/her name will be written in the book?” The answer to the first question is, nothing. The answer to the second question is, No. Names are inscribed in the book of life before the foundation of the world. This is by God’s sovereign and altogether gracious choice. You don’t believe in Jesus in order that your name will be written in the book. You believe in Jesus because your name has already been written down in the book. To those who do not presently believe in Jesus, we say: “Repent and believe!” If they do, it is because their names were written in the book of life before the foundation of the world.

In other words, one does not have his/her name inscribed at some point in human history or as a result of anything he/she may do or believe. Belief in Jesus is the fruit of having one’s name inscribed in the book of life, not its cause.

8. God has not chosen to reveal to us the names written in the Lamb’s book of life.

It is none of our business. We are not free to speculate about it. What he has revealed is the responsibility of each individual to repent and believe the gospel. If a person does not believe the gospel, he has no one to blame but himself. If he does believe the gospel, he has no one to praise but God.

None of us deserves to have his/her name written down in God’s book. We all deserve eternal damnation. The only explanation for why a hell-deserving sinner has his/her name written down in the Lamb’s book of life before the foundation of the world is because God is gracious and merciful and wishes to provide his Son with a Bride that will enjoy his glorious presence and love for eternity. Had God chosen not to inscribe anyone’s name in his book, he would have done no one an injustice.

9. There’s some debate around names being removed from the book of life.

Is it possible for someone whose name is written down to have it erased or removed? Some say yes based on Revelation 3:5 – “The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life.”

Colin Hemer refers to one particular custom in ancient Athens according to which the names of condemned criminals were erased from civic registers before their execution. The Greek word translated “to erase” (exaleiphein), “was the technical term for such degradation” (148). As insightful as this may be, it is more likely that we should look for a biblical background to this imagery.

On the one hand, Jesus may be saying that it is possible for a sinning, unrepentant Christian (such as were many at Sardis) to fail to overcome or conquer and thereby to forfeit their place in the book of life. Their names, already inscribed in the book, will be erased, signifying the loss of their salvation.

Some suggest having one’s name «blotted out» is not about salvation.

Others suggest that to have one’s name blotted out refers to something other than salvation. In Revelation 3:1 Jesus referred to the people at Sardis as having a “name” for being alive, i.e., they had a reputation for spiritual vitality. The idea, then, is that such people are saved, but will forfeit any hope of an honorable position in the coming kingdom of God. They are saved, but will experience shame at the last day. It is not the loss of life, per se, but the loss of a certain quality of life that otherwise could have been theirs. Thus, what one loses by having their name erased from the book of life is eternal rewards in the kingdom.

Several factors lead me to conclude that John does not envision the possibility of a true Christian forfeiting salvation.

We should begin by noting that all of the other promises to the “conqueror/overcomer” are coined in positive terms with no threat (implied or explicit) of losing a salvation once gained (see 2:7,11,17, 26-27; 3:12,21). This isn’t to suggest that Christians can’t backslide and sin badly. The rebukes in these seven letters indicate otherwise. Nevertheless, the evidence of the reality of true saving faith is perseverance (i.e., “overcoming”; cf. 1 John 2:19).

If it is asked why this promise is couched in negative terms, the answer is obvious: Jesus couldn’t say “I will write his name in the book of life” because the names of the “overcomers” (i.e., the elect) were already written in the book from eternity past (see Rev. 13:8; 17:8). There is no indication in Scripture, least of all in Revelation, of additional names being inscribed in the book as a reward for faithfulness or perseverance. Rather, faithfulness and perseverance are the evidence or fruit of having had one’s name written in the book. Those who worship the “beast” do so precisely because their names were not written in the book in eternity past (13:8; 17:8).

Two groups of people are shown in Revelation.

It is clear from Revelation 13:8 and 17:8 that there are two and only two groups of people. On the one hand are those whose names have not been written in the book of life from eternity past. They “worship” and “marvel” at the Beast. The second group consists of those whose names have been written in the book of life, which constitutes the reason why they refuse to give their allegiance to the enemy of Christ. Nowhere does it suggest a third group: people whose names had been written in the book in eternity past but, because they worshiped the Beast, failed to overcome or conquer and thus have their names blotted out.

In other words, as John Piper explains, “having our name in the book of life from the foundation of the world seems to mean that God will keep you from falling and grant you to persevere in allegiance to God. Being in the book means you will not apostatize” (“Can the Regenerate Be Erased from the Book of Life?” 12/22/06 at www.desiringgod.org.). Or again, being written in the book means that God is committed to guarding your heart so that you will “conquer” and “overcome” the Beast by not yielding to the temptation to worship his name or receive his mark.

Those who worship the Beast do so because their names were not in the book. Having one’s name written in the book from eternity past is what guarantees a life that overcomes, a life that perseveres, a faith that conquers. Piper summarizes:

His word is a promise of security to overcomers, not a threat of insecurity to those who lapse.

Therefore, this declaration of Jesus is a promise to the elect that nothing will ever, by any means (he uses a double negative), prevent them from possessing the eternal inheritance to which they have been ordained. In other words, we must take note of what Jesus does not say. He does not say that anyone will be erased from the book of life. Rather, he says the overcomers will not be erased. His word is a promise of security to overcomers, not a threat of insecurity to those who lapse. So again, Jesus nowhere says he will erase names previously inscribed in the book of life.

What joy! What comfort! What incentive to love him and praise him and serve him. Jesus will never blot my name out of the book of life!

10. Compared with having your name written down in heaven. everything else is next to nothing.

In what do you take deepest delight? What is it that brings the greatest and most intense joy and happiness to your heart? I’m sure that many of us would point to our families, perhaps our children. Others might say that their greatest source of joy is their good health and good friends and a robust bank account. Of course, if Christians give much thought to the question they would eventually say something like, “My greatest source of joy is in knowing Jesus and being assured that I will spend an eternity in intimate fellowship with him.” Others might point to the truth of our adoption as God’s children, or our being justified or declared righteous in God’s sight through faith in Jesus, and the list of answers could go on almost without end.

The disciples had misplaced joy:

There was an event in the lives of the first-century followers of Jesus that brought this question very much into play. It’s found in Luke 10. There Jesus sent out 72 disciples, not apostles, but average followers like you and me. He told them to heal the sick and proclaim the presence of God’s kingdom. When they returned to Jesus to give him a report of what happened, we read this:

“The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, ‘Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!’ And he said to them, ‘I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you’” (Luke 10:17-19).

I can understand why the disciples of Jesus were so excited and filled with joy. To exercise the authority of Jesus himself in subduing demonic spirits is a wonderful thing. But then Jesus said this:

“Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven” (Luke 10:20).

Jesus isn’t saying it is wrong to rejoice that we have authority over demons. This is a standard way of speaking in biblical times. His point is that compared with having your name written down in heaven exercising authority over demons is next to nothing.

The book is published by Krishnamurti Foundation India. it is an initiative by the foundation to keep alive and spread his teaching among all of us.

I truly enjoyed and got enlightened reading this book. Each theme is very well explained. The tone throughout is conversational. It is presented in the form of 365 quotations, one for each day of the year. I found the October part to be most resonating, it consisted of lessons like time, perception, brain and transformation. Although the book is written in easy language the material is heavy. I suggest you read it slowly and let things sink properly. I highly recommend this book to each individual to get clarity about life.

To those who seek. Krishnamurti doesn’t bluff, he doesn’t give you an answer or suggestions, he adds no fluff to his words. He gets right to the point. It’s easy to see that he has put a lot of thought into understanding the things a person goes through. The book covers everything, that happens in your life, his understanding of religion is incredible.

And that’s all I want, the actual truth, even if it hurts. So if you’re serious about knowing who you really are and ready to go through whatever it takes to get there.
For him meditation is awareness, he won’t ask you to breathe in a certain way, he says, when you watch a flower, simply watch it and nothing else.
My words simply can’t describe this rare gem from a highly evolved person. One is set on an ard journey of truth while trying to understand this beautiful piece of recollected work word by word.

I found the book to be unlike many I read, as Krishnamurti posits a spellbinding insight and manner of saying something, at times an entire entry in this selection. Yet, this forthcoming of captivating expression and profound insight is amidst much more that, to me, is a detracting atmosphere. Simply put, much of what the author presents is a 5 star, this work itself not near that.

I will posit some concerns as to Krishnamurti’s style of and teaching itself. I will conclude, however, with an affirmation of why I recommend the reading of this book, and other of his works.

1) absolutist language.

Here, I mean a perfectionism that one must have arrived at in order to ascend to the esteemed heights to which the author summons the reader. While the author presents, as in Buddhism, a path not of effortfulness, his words oft do not comply. One could be left wondering, «Is what Krishnamurti teaches possible for anyone?»

This nondual spaciousness, the absolute freedom, we are told is beyond egoic grasp and known in the climate of a pure silent, openness. If so, why the repeated affirmations of reasoned effort, along with the instruction that the mind must be purged of all group belief, the body of all personal feeling? And this move to freedom, Krishnamurti presents frequently as happening suddenly, as though once the last iota of impurity is released, suddenly one is free. He negates, it seems, that freedom is not merely a perfectionistic state suddenly received, but freedom is, as well, a matter of degrees. Emergence is an acclimation slowly from the egoic state to the non-egoic non-state. And one could logically inquire, «Is such a perfection any different from the egoic grasp of escape from fallibility reflected in much dogmatic, fundamentalist religion?» Does Krishnamurti present us any beauty in being imperfectly human?

2) authoritarian tone.

Krishnamurti, first, denies the role of teaching and that he is a teacher: this is common among nondual ‘teachers,’ it seems. Yet, he did a lot of teaching. Indeed, more than being invitational in approach, which he is at times, mostly he presents as authoritarianly parental toward his listeners. He will even inform them that they are not living what he says, that they just are not ‘there’ yet, and as though he knows no one listening is. Of course, apparently, he sees himself, among them, as the beacon that alone is.

If no one can be taught the Truth, why such authoritarianism? If one questions this assessment, one may choose to look at the choice of language usage, such as the frequent use of ‘must.’

A close friend, at his bedside near death, reported the author bemoaned how no one had understood his teaching. One simply cannot, in consistency, claim Truth is the authority and he or she is no teacher and, as well, project as a teacher living in the heights above the misled minions, even his immediate followers.

Possibly, Krishnamurti reflects a being beyond most others, yet, how one presents that is vital. Spiritual inflation is a subtle form of temptation to persons guiding others toward Truth. Indeed, the profound humbleness of sagacious beings is one aspect that seems to empower their teachings. They present as ‘with’ others, not ‘above’ them.

The first two points relate to this. Krishnamurti seemed to have a personality that led him to see in extremes. All religion is bad and to be avoided (all Buddhism, all Christianity, all Islam, all anything religion from ancient times to modern times is useless), for example, he says. Yet, he does, elsewhere, choose to redefine religion to suit his thought. Can one denounce all religion and religions, and, at the same time, in integrity redefine it to encourage it as descriptive of the freedom he espouses as the height of human evolution?

Sages tend to integrate, for that is how they «see.» Krishnamurti appears to have seen more from polarity, opposites, even while teaching nonduality, or transcendence of opposites.

The denial of one extreme from the position of another extreme is still an extreme; in this sense, the author appears extremist, denoucing the gurus of this world, he seems to see himself as a modernized guru, disrobed of tradition but not role. One could refer to Krishnamurti as mirroring for us a fundamentalist nonduality, that is, if he had been consistent in applying his own premise. One, also, wonders of anyone who can so annul the entire history of any movement, including religions and governments, that like all, reflect our common shared humanness, and propound that he is showing us the way from it all to what he has to say to us: his vision of utopia. Better, it seems, and more truthful, an integrative, rather than dismissive posture.

Nonduality is generally presented as invitational, likewise as seeing into the strengths of the fallible systems we live through, not dismissive in total.

One example I offer, referring again to belief. The author informs us, often, of the evils of belief. I cannot help see in his work his own belief; and, as to belief, he speaks against dogmatism, still he speaks as dogmatically from his certainty as any dogmatic theologian or reverend I have ever heard. The contradictions, again, are linked to his tending to see in opposition not integration, and denouncing all belief leaves one with the impression that anyone who believes anything is simply wrong. One is left with the claim, also, by Krishnamurti that he is devoid of any belief. Or does he mean something other than others mean by belief? Has he redefined belief, as he did religion?

Rather, would a nondual approach not be to see that in belief one finds that which both reflects mere mentality and, also, that instrumental in inspiring and informing one toward Truth? That is, belief includes a spectrum of truthfulness, from total illusion to the threshold of transcending belief itself, truths potentially being guides to Truth.

We cannot escape belief, for we believe something about so many things, maybe all things. Even to deny belief intimates a belief that leads to such denial, meaning only through belief can I deny belief. Krishnamurti does not escape the inevitability of belief, and one could wonder what inspired him to be so against that inevitability? Why not take a middle path, not an against path, in this matter and others?

Krishnamurti’s approach is different, more rational, than most guides in his general venue of philosophy. While he speaks of Truth arising only when the mind is quieted and our need to drop the mind, his pointing is highly logical and markedly reasoned out. Indeed, he stresses employment of the mind. I am not saying the approach is wrong, and each guide manifests his or her own style; yet, the guidance does not comport with the confirmations that Truth is not mental, is not conceptual.

Brilliant and spiritual. I literally fell silent after reading this book. There’s so much truth inside, so much that it’s hard to process them.

Here’s what I found out about the philosophy of Krishnamurti upon reading this: it is a combination of Stoism, Buddism, and Trancendentalism.

Stoism, in a sense that he instructed the readers not to escape from pain or any negative emotion, but to dwell in it so as to understand everything about it.

Buddism, because he gave emphasis to impermanence of every Brilliant and spiritual. I literally fell silent after reading this book. There’s so much truth inside, so much that it’s hard to process them.

Here’s what I found out about the philosophy of Krishnamurti upon reading this: it is a combination of Stoism, Buddism, and Trancendentalism.

Buddism, because he gave emphasis to impermanence of everything; life, feelings, emotions, relationships, and worldly possessions in general.

And finally, Trancendentalism, clearly because the repeated teaching all throughout is not to allow oneself to get involved in any societal, political, and religious institutions which have conditioned and continue to condition the mind and therefore creates many kinds of conflicts.

As a reader, I honestly find it almost impossible to attain such newness of the mind which is the main goal according to him. But then again, our mind as he said, is conditioned and we are undeniably indolent. One thing’s for sure though, one has to read this book many times before one can absorb everything that was written inside.

In this book, one can find a timeless daily meditation, developed thematically over seven days, and shed light on the problems of daily life as well as on the illusions that we get into while solving them. This book is a source of enlightenment, introspection, wholesomeness and much more. It’s like giving oneself a daily dose of affirmations which tend to bring many changes in life if followed and abided by. I have read a few chapters on a daily basis since the time I got my hands on this book and believe that it is a great boon for anxious minds like me.

I found it unreadable. I powered through the first 35% of the book, hoping it would get better, but the writing was too cryptic and difficult to follow. Strong assertions were made without providing sufficient explanations and there are many logical leaps. I don’t know if this is because of the way the content is organized. There is a passage for every day of the year and every month explores a few themes. Clarity has suffered because of the intention to keep every passage brief. The Daily Stoic I found it unreadable. Mathematics and Construction

About the Book

This book provides an introduction to Conway’s Game of Life, the interesting mathematics behind it, and the methods used to construct many of its most interesting patterns. Lots of small «building block»-style patterns (especially in the first four or so chapters of this book) were found via brute-force or other computer searches, and the book does not go into the details of how these searches were implemented. However, from that point on it tries to guide the reader through the thought processes and ideas that are needed to combine those patterns into more interesting composite ones.

While the book largely follows the history of the Game of Life, that is not its primary purpose. Rather, it is a by-product of the fact that most recently discovered patterns build upon patterns and techniques that were developed earlier. The goal of this book is to demystify the Game of Life by breaking down the complex patterns that have been developed in it into bite-size chunks that can be understood individually.

Mary Beth, a museum tour guide, takes a group of school detention students on a secret museum tour, telling them, with wooden figures, the story of a Mexican town called San Angel from the Book of Life, holding every story in the world.

On the Day of the Dead, La Muerte, ruler of the Land of the Remembered, and Xibalba, ruler of the Land of the Forgotten, see Manolo Sánchez and Joaquín Mondragon competing over María Posada. They strike a wager: if María marries Manolo, Xibalba will no longer interfere in mortal affairs, but if she marries Joaquín, La Muerte and Xibalba will swap realms. However, Xibalba cheats by giving Joaquín his Medal of Everlasting Life, which grants the wearer invincibility.

Years later, Joaquín has become a hero with the Medal’s aid, but Manolo’s musical aspirations are suppressed by his father Carlos, who trains him to be a bullfighter in their family tradition. At Manolo’s first bullfight he defeats the bull but refuses to kill it, dismaying Carlos and the crowd but impressing María. That night, María is pressured by her father and mayor, General Ramiro Posada, to marry Joaquín for his protection from the Bandit King Chakal. María and Manolo both profess their love before dawn but are interrupted when Xibalba sends his dual-headed snake staff, who bites her and sends her into a coma. Devastated by María’s apparent death, Manolo allows Xibalba to kill him, believing he will be reunited with María in death.

In the Land of the Remembered, Manolo reunites with his mother and his ancestral family. They travel to La Muerte’s castle, discovering Xibalba, now the ruler of the realm, who explains the bet. Manolo travels to the Cave of Souls to reach La Muerte. Inside, he meets the Candle Maker, the overseer of mortal lives and the Book of Life’s keeper. The Candle Maker sees that Manolo’s story in the Book of Life is blank and can be rewritten by himself, so he takes them to the Land of the Forgotten. They find La Muerte at Xibalba’s castle and expose his cheating. Furious, La Muerte lectures Xibalba before offering a new wager at Manolo’s request: Manolo’s life will be returned if he completes a challenge of Xibalba’s choosing, but if he fails, he will be forgotten and Xibalba will keep both realms. Xibalba sets Manolo against a giant bull skeleton made from the skeletons of every bull slain by the Sanchez family, believing that to be his greatest fear.

Meanwhile, María has been awakened from her coma, learns of Manolo’s death, and accepts Joaquín’s proposal. Their wedding is interrupted by Chakal, who leads his army to San Angel to find the Medal, which was previously his. Chakal kills Carlos, who arrives in the Land of the Remembered in time to see Manolo’s fight. Manolo, realizing his fear is actually of being himself, refuses to fight and instead sings an apology to the bull, appeasing it and touching everyone present. Impressed, the deities resurrect Manolo and send him and his family to San Angel to protect it. Manolo is knocked unconscious when Chakal destructs himself, but he is protected by the Medal, which Joaquín had slipped him earlier. Joaquín returns it to Xibalba and resolves to be a true hero, while Manolo and María are happily married as Xibalba and La Muerte reconcile.

In the present, Mary Beth finishes the story, and the amazed children leave the museum. Mary Beth and a security guard reveal themselves to be La Muerte and Xibalba in disguise. The Candle Maker appears and encourages the audience to write their own story.

The Book of Life was originally optioned by DreamWorks Animation in 2007, but never went beyond development because of «creative differences». [6] From there the film went to Reel FX, [11] with 20th Century Fox handling distribution rights. The film was initially given a release date of October 10, 2014; [12] however, this was eventually moved back by a week. [13] On October 16, 2013, it was announced that Channing Tatum, Zoe Saldana, Diego Luna and Christina Applegate would star as voice actors in the film. [9]

Jorge Gutierrez, co-creator of Nickelodeon’s El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera, wanted to make the final animation look like the concept artwork saying: «I saw every single one that comes out and my biggest heartbreak is that I see all this glorious art, and then the movie doesn’t look like that! The mandate of this movie was: Our ‘Art of’ book is going to look exactly like the movie. And every artist poured their heart and soul into that idea.» [14] Gutierrez did not permit his animation team to go on any research trips to Mexico, feeling that such trips often only covered very touristy aspects of the culture. Instead he had the team address any questions they had about the region to him. [15]

Release

The Book of Life made its world premiere in Los Angeles on October 12, 2014. [16] It was released on October 17, 2014 in North America. [17]

Home media

The Book of Life was released on DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D on January 27, 2015 by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. [18] The special features included a 3-minute [19] short animated film, titled The Adventures of Chuy. [18]

Music

In April 2013, it was announced Gustavo Santaolalla and Paul Williams would be adapting pop songs for the film. [20] The soundtrack was released on September 29, 2014, on iTunes, [21] and was released on CD on October 27, 2014, by Sony Masterworks. [22]

Critical reception

The Book of Life received generally positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 82% based on 107 reviews, with an average rating of 7/10. The site’s critical consensus reads «The Book of Life‘s gorgeous animation is a treat, but it’s a pity that its story lacks the same level of craft and detail that its thrilling visuals provide.» [35] On Metacritic, the film has a score of 67 out of 100, based on 27 critics, indicating «generally favorable reviews». [36]

Geoff Berkshire of Variety gave the film a positive review, saying «Repping a major step forward for Dallas-based Reel FX Animation Studios (after their anemic feature bow on last year’s Free Birds), the beautifully rendered CG animation brings an unusually warm and heartfelt quality to the high-tech medium and emerges as the film’s true calling card.» [37] Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter gave the film a positive review, saying «The Book of Life is a visually stunning effort that makes up for its formulaic storyline with an enchanting atmosphere that sweeps you into its fantastical world, or in this case, three worlds.» [38] Simon Abrams of The Village Voice gave the film a negative review, saying «The Book of Life’s hackneyed stock plot preaches tolerance while lamely reinforcing the status quo.» [39] Marc Snetiker of Entertainment Weekly gave the film an A-, saying «Overflowing with hyperactive charm and a spectacular sea of colors, it showcases some of the most breathtaking animation we’ve seen this decade.» [40] Claudia Puig of USA Today gave the film two and a half stars out of four, saying «The dizzying, intricate imagery is so beautiful, and the Latin-inspired songs catchy enough that the overall effect is often enchanting.» [41] Sara Stewart of The New York Post gave the film two out of four stars, saying «Just in time for Mexico’s Day of the Dead holiday comes this gloriously colorful animated musical, which almost (but not quite) makes up in visuals what it lacks in snappy dialogue.» [42] Katie Rife of The A.V. Club gave the film a B-, saying «Ultimately, what drags The Book Of Life down is its insistence on trying to update an (original) folkloric story for a contemporary audience. In practice, this means adding some pop-cultural touches that only serve to take the viewer out of the fantastic setting.» [43]

Calvin Wilson of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch gave the film two and a half stars out of five, saying «The Book of Life is a flawed but intriguing new chapter in animation.» [51] James Berardinelli of ReelViews gave the film three out of four stars, saying «The Book of Life moves breezily from one scene to the next, keeping the pace brisk and rarely skipping a beat.» [52] Laura Emerick of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film three out of four stars, saying «Whether en ingles o en espanol, The Book of Life is a delight. In an animated universe cluttered with kung-fu pandas, ice princesses and video-game heroes, Gutierrez and del Toro have conjured up an original vision.» [53] Tasha Robinson of The Dissolve gave the film three and a half stars out of five, saying «It’s all flawed, and distracted, and conceptually messy, prioritizing color over common sense and energy over consistency. But as an afternoon’s diversion for a handful of misbehaving kids—both within the movie, and within the movie theater—it’s authentically winning.» [54] Michael Ordona of the San Francisco Chronicle gave the film a positive review, saying «There are no great surprises, no shocking reveals (except to the characters themselves). But there’s so much to appreciate along the way that it’s a real page-turner.» [44] Kenji Fujishima of Slant Magazine gave the film two out of four stars, saying «Jorge R. Gutierrez subsumes the film’s darker themes in a relentlessly busy farrago of predictable kids’-movie tropes and annoying attempts at hipness.» [55] Ben Sachs of the Chicago Reader gave the film a negative review, saying «This Pixar knockoff from 20th Century Fox is more imaginative than most, though like far too many of them, it’s undone by a surfeit of glib one-liners and pop culture references.» [56]

Sequels

Director Jorge Gutierrez revealed in an interview that one of the ideas for the next chapter in the story involves Joaquin and his relationship with his father. «I had always imagined the first movie to be about Manolo, the second to be about Joaquín and the third one to be about Maria. I’ve always conceived it as a trilogy.» [71] In June 2017, Gutierrez and Reel FX Animation announced that the development on the sequel had begun. [72]

Не могу не поделиться здесь своими впечатлениями от просмотра мультфильма «Книга жизни» (в английском варианте «The Book of Life»).

Он вышел в мировой прокат в октябре прошлого года, а с конца февраля 2015 его можно было посмотреть в России. Но добралась я до него только теперь. И очень рада, что посмотрела его, хотя у меня и были некоторые предубеждения по поводу того, что история, разворачивающаяся в День мертвых, не может быть позитивной. Я ожидала увидеть нечто мрачное, в темных тонах, с заунывной музыкой и печальным концом. Однако, к счастью, мультфильм оказался вовсе не таким. В нем изобилуют яркие краски, приятная музыка и очень даже счастливый конец. Но не приторный. К тому же сентиментальные моменты очень удачно разбавляются вставками и репликами школьников, слушающих историю «экскурсовода».

В общем, мультфильм мне очень понравился. Сюжет поражает своей новизной и смелостью. И его нельзя назвать «детским», хотя он и будет понятен детям.

Но давайте рассмотрим все по порядку.

Мультфильм начинается с того, что группа школьников приезжает на экскурсию в музей. Дети непослушные, и им совершенно не хочется проводить свое время в «скучном» (как они считают) музее без своих гаджетов.

Однако все оборачивается для них очень приятным времяпрепровождением с милой девушкой, которая рассказывает им историю о том, как поспорили между собой мексиканские боги: Катрина (правительница царства Незабытых) и Шибальба (правитель царства Забвения). Поспорили на судьбу всего мира, а выбрали предметом спора трех детей, играющих между собой: девочку (Марию) и двух мальчиков (Хоакина и Маноло), влюбленных в эту девочку. Поспорили о том, кто первым из мальчиков женится на Марии. Катрина выбирает Маноло, а Шибальба – Хоакина (причем ко всему прочему, дарит ему медаль Вечной жизни, обладателя которой нельзя убить).

Вскоре отец отправляет Марию на обучение в Испанию, а Хоакин с Маноло остаются в Мексике, чтобы стать теми, какими их ожидают видеть окружающие: Хоакин воином, а Маноло – тореадором. Его поддерживают его мать и дедушка, отправившиеся вместе с ним. Также на его сторону встает Свечник, бог жизни, который изумляется, открыв книгу жизни Маноло, поскольку она оказывается пуста. Ведь тореодор жил не той жизнью, которая была ему предначертана.

В ходе разговора между Катриной и Шибальбой выясняется, что последний нарушил условие спора, а также то, что он передал Хоакину медаль Вечной жизни, за которой охотиться Шакал. Все соглашаются, что было бы справедливым, в связи с открывшимися обстоятельствами, вернуть Маноло к жизни. Все, кроме Шибальбы.

Он устраивает ему испытание, заставляя его сделать то, что он боится больше всего – уничтожить всех быков, которых убили при жизни его предки. Однако правитель царства Забытых не учитывает одного обстоятельства: Маноло не боится быков, а боится быть собой, предать свой род. Но ему удается победить этот страх, признавшись самому себе, кто такой на самом деле.

Когда Маноло возвращается к жизни, он помогает городу в борьбе с Шакалом. Также ему на помощь приходят его умершие родственники. Им удается оттеснить Шакала, но коварный бандит не согласен сдаваться. Он решает погубить весь город, но Маноло мешает ему осуществить свои планы. Чуть ли не ценой своей жизни. Но его спасает медаль Вечной жизни, которую ему незаметно подсунул Хоакин. Храбрый воин понимает, что Мария любит Маноло и более не препятствует их браку, осознавая, что нужно быть собой, а не оглядываться на других или пытаться кому-то подражать. Таким образом, Мария становится женой Маноло.

Еще от себя хотелось бы добавить, что этот мультфильм оставляет после просмотра очень приятные эмоции, он очень жизнеутверждающий и оптимистичный, отлично передает мексиканский колорит и вселяет надежду в лучшее. В нем совершенно ничего не хочется изменить – настолько хороша режиссерская и сценаристская работа (спасибо за это Хорхе Гутьерресу и Дугласу Лангдэйлу).
