A Bit of History…

Vixel and I have been wanting to get into the Game-development scene for a while! He has a ton of programming experience from earlier in his career, and I’ve done game assets professionally several years back as well. But only recently have we decided to be in full control and make all the calls ourselves.

We hit the ground running coming up with a sizeable scope, something flexible, something capable. Something super fun, with endless possibilities. A bit of a blank canvas if you will. And I had just the concept!

Inspiration…

To those who are familiar with my work. I had a line of commissions/pieces that I tagged “The Forest of Love.” The pieces were of random critters banging, with a forest backdrop. I always thought it was fun to consider that the same forest. Just a nice little place that’s popular for hooking up.

Thus started the foundations of our game.

The Beginning…

Over the rest of December and into January (2019), we focused on making the Game Document and fleshing out the lore/general story. We also had to finish up our own previous commitments before we could be fully dedicated to this game.

As of February 2019, we’ve been fully into production mode! In those 2 months, we’ve managed to create almost all of the assets and engine necessary for a Vertical Slice/Demo! We hope to keep up this speed as the year goes on.

Progress so Far… (August, 2020)

! Where does the time go? Nearly a year and a half has gone by, production still going strong, but WOW did I overestimate the speed at which this would go!

In the first few months, we were able to cobble together the Vertical Slice! A small sample of what we wanted to provide. Fast forward a year and some change, and we’ve finally got the entirety of Act 1 ready. The game has changed SO VASTLY from our initial designs. Multiple systems had to go through multiple iterations to be robust enough for our needs, and satisfy our design standards.

The iterations, revamping, the multitudes of edgecases – It was a herculean task for sure! But one necessary for the quality we wanted to bring to the table. Hopefully, it’s evident how vastly different the game-feel is from the Demo released a year ago, vs Act 1 released now (2020).

That said. We will be vastly revamping our timeline. We will also include question marks to really push the point that the process is mercurial, and often times, delays are necessary and to be expected.

Phase 1

Preproduction, and previsualization.

A majority of this was done during the first few months of this games life. I wanted to make sure the foundations were set in stone before I drew a line, or Vixel wrote a line of code.

We established our goals and ideals, which started our path onto what game we’d make.

We designed the general game play experience and player interaction. The world, the character. The story, the lore. The personalities, the quirks. The general attitude and feel of the game.

After about a month of work, we had a 25 page Game Document, and a solid plan.

Phase 2

Vertical Slice, Initial Systems, Public Launch.

(I just made this phase because it’s so dang important, and it needs its own section. Making a game is more realistically broken into like, 20 phases, so bear with me)

This phase is the Vertical Slice phase. Cobbling everything together, and making a proof of concept of something. That was our demo! This gave us a good idea of what sort of challenges we’ll face, how the gameplay loop feels, what sorta additional things we could do to further flesh out the experience, while staying faithful to the original design and celebrating what makes it unique.

Phase 3

Iterations, Revamping systems, Fleshing out assets and Story content.

Act 1

This is the phase we just completed.

After a successful vertical slice release, we saw what was/wasn’t working. What was necessary to really promote our game design and gameplay loop, and how we would need to revamp our systems to be robust enough for the future of our game.

Very rarely does anyone go into production of a game knowing exactly everything what will be involved and how to execute, implement, and tie in all of the elements. We had a HUGE game document, yet the amount of things we realized we didn’t account for is staggering! But as problems presented themselves with older systems, we knew it was clear that iterations would have to be done. And better sooner than later – this way it’s not a massive problem to fix later on.

A bulk of our “Phase 3” time was spent on iterating and reiterating. A lot of “polish” and “quality of life” that may seem overkill right now, but is essential as the game grows. At this point in time, Act 1 is done and released to the public. It has all of our main systems in it, some iterated a few times over for design/accessibility sake. We also wanted to throw in some specific things like mini cutscenes, mini games, collectibles and all sorts of other methods of interaction to map out how we’ll be dealing with all of these elements in the future.

The Forest

Long ago, this area was a worshipping ground for an Avatar of Lust. Creatures of all sizes would travel great lengths to meet and engage in a multitude of crazy raunchy activities. This is how they’d pay their respects.

Over the years, the lust and general raunchiness slowed down. Eventually the rumors of the forest became just that.

Of course, they’re more than happy to oblige the curious traveler…

The Critters

The forest is home to critters big and small. From a big ole’ bear, to teeny tiny mice, and everything in between. Of course, size and species didn’t stop them from being romantically involved

The neighbors have a rich history with each other. There are lifelong partners and occasional flings. Some have drifted apart while others have yet to come together…

Aside from a unique personality, each of the critters have their own interests and kinks! There’s something for everyone here in the forest!

Be sure to talk with the neighbors often! They love to share their experiences, and they won’t skip the juicy details

So what’s next?

First, we’ll be taking a little break! Then we will be transitioning our entire game to a fresh project. Vixel’s super stoked about this transition and what it’s gonna save him in terms of time and bug-busting. It’ll be a lot of work, but absolutely worth it! He’s already started the process several weeks ago!

Then we’ll be going full hog into Act 3! As I said, tons of content is already prepared for it, Hopefully we’ll be looking at quicker turn around times per-act. But we’ll see. We are doing our best not to over-stress ourselves out with deadlines, and just letting things get completed when they do!

Act 3 Progress and FAQ!

Hey folks!

Just wanted to thank you all for your continued interest in our game! It’s honestly crazy that there are new comments on this post almost daily, and new folks giving it a shot! We’re really stoked to see that!

I just wanted to do a FAQ/Update to answer some of these questions. It probably won’t prevent folks from continually asking them, but if you’re keeping your eyes on our game, then at least you’ll have some answers here!

Soon, we’d like to add gallery tips for unlocking each of the items! Just something quick, nothing too spoiler-y, but should provide enough direction to unlock all the content in the game! The nature of releasing a game in parts like this, is kind of like presenting a multi-layered cake one layer at a time.

Some items won’t come into play until later. Some Critters won’t come into play until later too.

Perhaps we’ll have a better solution for this in the future, but for now we haven’t been worrying about it, despite the confusion it has brought up!

Yes! We’ve been thinking on how we can adapt this game to be entirely touch controlled, and there are a lot of options. But it does require certain rework in some UIs. We’d want it to work well, not just be one of those overlay ports. Though tbh, not a bad quick fix.

HOWEVER. We have also considered that we could just temporarily NOT support touch, and let you guys use a Bluetooth controller and play that way :O! It’s not «official phone support,» but it WILL play if you use an Xbox/PS4/5 controller or whatever. We are looking into making this happen relatively soon, but we’ve found out there’s a system we use that can’t be compiled to Android. So it does require some rewiring on our part.

We’d also like to get our «cheats» in toggle-able options before our Android port. Currently you’d have to use a bluetooth keyboard to type in a cheat, which makes troubleshooting a huge bitch.

We’re usually pretty busy, and big ole posts like this take a long time. We do keep our Patreons up to date with weekly posts on what we’ve been up to. (and Monthly builds!) But in general, we aren’t really posting too often anywhere else.

This is probably just our fault though. Personally, I don’t ever wanna be that guy who’s just spamming ads for their project the whole time. But I can definitely post more about our progress here and there. I think the last time I posted to Twitter/FA/IB about the game, it was when Act 2 was out, nearly 8 months ago.

I should try to make at least a monthly post to those art sites. And for Itch, I should figure out how the HECK I should be using these devlogs. I think I’m doing this one right lmao.

So a few months ago we started Act 3 Content. But had to stop pretty quickly due to needing a MASSIVE rewrite of our games core systems. Mainly speaking, this games getting REALLY BIG and we needed a data base. So Vixel made one! But now he’s been combing through EVERYTHING in the game and rewiring it to work with the data base. He’s also been rewiring new systems to keep things more efficient, this way we can support phones and hopefully larger WebGL builds (Act 2 is already pushing the limits of mobile browser tabs support!)

So effectively, Vixel has made a fork in our projects. The 2.0 project has been built from the ground up, and is going through all the processes to get it up to speed. Meanwhile, the «main old project» is still being updated with content for our monthly patreons!

See, our game has Linear, AND Non-Linear content. All the non-linear content is stuff like gossips/dates/etc. These are pretty quick to add, mainly visual content and written content. Linear content can sometimes require entire new SYSTEMS. That’s where we are at with Act 3. The next campaign content will require a few new systems, and there’s no point crafting them 2 different ways for 2 different fork builds. SO, we are halting campaign progress while Vixel prepares our 2.0 project!

As I said, that does not mean there is halted content. I’ve been making many illustrations, and writing lots of juicy content for our newest Critters of the forest, Melody and Charlotte! (They were introduced at the beginning of Act 3.) We also did an entire winter event with like, 15 or so more illustrations and a pretty decent quest chain! It details the critters favorite holiday!

That’s hard to say. I have a majority of the dialogue/story content written out, like the very last section of Act 3 isn’t finished yet, but it’s pretty dang close. And I have a majority of the animated scenes roughed out or even semi-animated. But we will be having a few unique systems and mini games to design and build. Not to mention finishing up the migration to the 2.0 project. It’s a lot of work, and we are tackling it one step at a time.

And that’s the actual game dev stuff. We spent a good amount of time going through getting our Steam Page up and live, as well as new ads on E621 and Yiffer. All of these things take a good amount of time to design and launch. I also got a bit inspired for some possible merch ideas after going to BLFC.

Everyday we’re tackling something about the game, but whether it be actual game progress, or game-dev clerical duties, some weeks it seems like we didn’t get much done, but the reality is there’s a lot more that needs to get done behind the scenes.

That all said, I can’t give a definite ETA for Act 3. There’s a lot that needs to go into it, so I’ll just say hopefully this year.

By all means, please continue to report stuff, as we always look at them. But we won’t be doing another Act 2 Bugfix.

Now, once our Act 3 build is out, we will DEFINITELY be looking for a lot of bug feedback xD!

General Controls:

We also support Xbox Controllers (on windows)! The Web version works with controllers too, so give it a shot! The controls should be relatively intuitive. pause is pause, movement is movement blah blah

Things just look a lil funky. it still works but like. Not suggested haha.

If you’re trying to play in fullscreen on the Windows build and stuff is getting cut off at the edges, you can switch to windowed mode in the Options menu. Fullscreen/windowed toggle is not (yet) supported on WebGL or Mac.

! Very friendly, very compassionate. Not only has she raised several litters, she’s also looked at as the mother figure of the town. Many critters seek her council for wisdom, or just a shoulder to cry on. Thus, she’s always in the know of what’s going on! She’s got a thirst for drama and all the juicy details, so she tends to be a bit of a gossip.

The bunny and her husband settled down in the forest decades ago when things were a bit more wild. Over the years, they’ve had many promiscuous adventures with many of the critters in town!

Act 1 Release, and Carrot Month!

We’re days away from releasing Act 1 on Itch.io :> Past few months have been tons of cleaning up and tune ups and prepping for this release. Everything’s lookin’ heckin GEWD, so we’re super excited to finally get this chunk out to share with y’all!

Literally days away, so keep your eyes peeled. Once it’s out, I won’t be shutting up about it, so it’ll be hard to miss!

Aside from that, we’re currently a week into “Carrot Month!”

If y’all recall, it’s a month to FINALLY TACKLE THE THINGS YOU’VE BEEN PUTTING OFF. 2 Years ago I decided to take a month off of commissions and go full ham on “game stuff” – and that changed my entire life afterward! I encourage y’all to use this as an excuse to start that special thing you’ve been wanting to! If you do, please share it here 😀

This month I’ll still be dedicating ample time to Act 2 assets and production, but I’ll ALSO be jumping into a couple other things!

• The first and probably the most boring, is Project Management?!

Lmao, Vixel and I’ve been rummaging around with a few apps to track and better communicate our workflows and to-dos! It’s been tricky feeling around in the dark trying to find a good way to have all of this stuff in one place, so I spent the first couple days of this month looking into how other folks handle documenting, tracking, and mapping out production of larger projects. Found some good info, and hopefully we’ll be able to incorporate it all into a shareable live tasklist so y’all can see what we’re focusing on at any point in time :>

• Second – (and most cool) is 3D!

I’ve been jumping into blender pretty hardcore the past few days! I’ve been messing with hard surface modeling and getting some low-poly things “ghetto rigged” to start animating! I’ll post a test soon so y’all can see the shenanigans xD! I’d like to get a creature fully rigged and animate some loop thing this month. Makin’ good progress! Blender is A LOT easier to pick up than I thought it was gonna be xD I was pushing this off for literally years, and it’s super stupid since 2.8 is VERY accessible. (Again, this is the exact reason why Carrot month is a thing. A designated set of time where you just say “FUCKIT I’m doing the thing I’ve been wanting to do forever.”)

• Lastly! I’d like to make another Carrot Talk video or two :O

This time accompany with some royalty lo-fi hip hop bullshit to raise the general feel of those videos :> I’m thinking about making a video on “Finding Your Style” and then another video on “Crushing the Artblock”
