Library Storytime: It’s More Than Just the Story

The secret is… the early literacy skills kids learn seem like fun!

Storytime is the Heart and Soul of the Library
To many people, storytime and libraries go hand-in-hand. But surprisingly many new parents don’t know about the storytime programs available at their local public library. Not only is storytime a great free form of entertainment for parents looking for activities for their children, but library storytime can provide a bonanza of cognitive benefits as well. In many ways, storytime is the heart and soul of the library- not only does it bring together parents, caregivers and children but it also showcases the depth and breadth of your local public library’s commitment to your community with respect to early literacy and child development.

The Benefits of Storytime for Children
We know from recent studies in child development and neuroscience that reading books out loud to your child helps develop their reading skills long before they are able to read. So how is library storytime different from reading to your children at home? There are many additional benefits:

Library storytime is not just beneficial for your child(ren) but for you as parents as well in the following respects:

A Storytime for Every Age
Many libraries feature not just one storytime, but several different storytime programs geared for specific ages or developmental milestones. For example, you can usually find library storytimes for kids from Pre-walking Babies age up through Age 5 or 6.

Some of this storytime programming will obviously overlap, depending on the size of the community and the pool of available library staff, volunteers and outside storytellers. Also depending on the content of the program, some library storytimes will only be open to children within the targeted age range of the program- this is to ensure both that kids too young or too old for the program are not bored or discouraged, as well as to minimize the potential disruption for kids who are the right age. Many libraries also offer “family-friendly” storytime which is open to all ages. When in doubt, don’t be afraid to ask your local public library staff and they will steer you in the right direction!

Storytimes for the youngest children will usually feature songs, nursery rhymes and board books. At the toddler stage you will often find two distinct tracks of storytime programming: those more geared to music, dance and movement and those more focused on storytelling activities such as using flannel boards and puppets. Neither of these tracks are mutually exclusive, however, as both help foster complementary early literacy skills- singing, for example, helps build phonological awareness and rhythmic movement fosters spatial skills and counting, which are prerequisites for learning mathematics.

Libraries may also have policies and procedures regarding advance registration and restrictions on who may attend- i.e., events may be for town/city residents only, or priority may be given to residents if there is limited space for an event. Note also that for most of these storytime programs a parent or adult caregiver must accompany any children attending.

Some libraries also offer storytime “sleepover” events, where children are encouraged to come to an evening program in their pajamas. These kinds of events aren’t just a lot of fun, as they allow kids and adults to experience the wonder of their local public library at night, but they can help model good bedtime routines involving family storytime or reading to themselves at home as well.

Storytime in Languages Other than English
Recently libraries have begun offering storytime activities in languages other than English, especially in communities with large non-English speaking populations. For example, the Brooklyn Public Library has storytime programming in Arabic, Bengali, Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), French, Japanese, Kreyol, Spanish, Russian and Urdu.

Some libraries offer bilingual storytime as well, where the programming is in both English and another language, usually Spanish. Bilingual storytime can benefit not just native non-English speakers by creating a welcoming environment for them and their children, but it is also a great educational opportunity for English-speaking children and their parents.

How to Storytime- a Parent’s Primer

Okay, so you’re sold! Here are some things to keep in mind as a parent to help prepare your child(ren) for storytime at the library

Storytime is not just a fun library activity, but the beginning of what can be a beautiful relationship for your child and your local public library. Be sure and check out what kind of storytime programming your library already has, and make sure you are in the loop for any library announcements, as many libraries offer special storytime programs in addition to their regular scheduled events- for example, a Doctor Seuss-themed storytime.

Finally, don’t be afraid to suggest new storytime programs if you’re looking for something specific and don’t find it. After all, your library is a reflection of your community, which means your ideas are always welcome!

The Library

This article is a work in progress, and more thorough information is currently being researched and collected about The Library. If you have anything constructive to add, please do so, and if you’re not sure about the information, just bring it up in the comments.

The Library is the place made from the Seed of Light and the Facility of Lobotomy Corporation. It resides in the middle of the Nest of District 12 in the location of the original facility of Lobotomy Corporation, which is now a fallen Wing. Angela is the director of the Library and its creator, able to control the power within the Library along with the other Patron Librarians.

The Library is portrayed as a large, towering structure composed of 10 Floors that contains infinite internal space. It focuses on storing Books from the people who die inside it. To access the Library, an Invitation has to be used, and those who sign the Invitation become the Guests. The Invitation offers Books of interest of the Guests, and if they do survive the ordeals within the Library, they can take the Books and leave. Otherwise, they will become Books.

In-game, The Library acts as the main hub where the player can organize their teams of Librarians, their Key Pages and Combat Pages, additional equipment, check information of the Abnormality Pages, and send Invitations. It is composed of two screens.

The Library’s screen

The screen has two buttons at the top right corner of the screen, to access the Library and Invitation tab.

The Library screen shows the unlocked Floors. When selecting one, it will show at the left the team of Librarians and at the right the unlocked Abnormality Pages of the selected Floor. Below the team of Librarians will be the name of the Floor, their Level, and their respective Assignments left to increase that Floor to the next Level. Below that at the bottom, is a button to burn Books.

Once a new Floor has completed all its Assignments, it will mark on its icon an exclamation icon where the player can decide to enter the Abnormality Battle to increase the Level of the Floor.

Assignments can be done with any Floor and increasing the Level of a Floor unlocks a new Story of their Patron Librarian and an Abnormality Battle to obtain new Abnormality Pages.

The Librarians can be clicked to check their Stats, their current Key Pages and Combat Pages at the right side, obtained Battle Symbols, and adjust their appearance and customization.

When checking a Librarian, one can click on their Key Page to change it to another one. There is also an attribution system, which allows you to attribute other Key Pages to a Key Page in order to inherit their passive abilities. Key pages can only be equipped to one Librarian at a time and Key Pages that are attributed to another Key Page cannot be equipped.

Clicking on any Combat Page in the Key Page’s combat bookshelf (deck) will open a menu of all obtained Combat Pages, and from here clicking on Pages will insert/remove them from the deck. Note that the deck is associated with the Key Page rather than the Librarian.

A customization button that changes the aspect of the Librarian is at the left side of the screen upon selecting a Librarian. In it can be customized the name, size, and title, hair and face features, and dialogue. Next to this button can be found ‘Appearance Projection’, which allows the librarian to take the appearance of any Key Page you have unlocked, but does not affect the Librarian’s Stats or Abilities.

At the bottom of the left tab without selecting a Librarian is a button to burn Books. There, the player can pick up to 20 Books and burn them to obtain Key Pages and Combat Pages from that Book’s pool. The Book’s pool depletes from this process, but can be refreshed on request and is automatically refreshed when there are no Pages left. Note that, while Combat Pages can be farmed indefinitely, only a set number of each Key Page may be obtained, depending on its rarity.

Story [ ]

The Library was the product of the Seed of Light combined with the facility of Lobotomy Corporation. At the True Ending of Lobotomy Corporation, Angela betrayed the collective objective of the Seed of Light for her own goals to pursue freedom. Originally, the Seed of Light had to last 7 days, but after 3 days, Angela managed to achieve the control of the light and used them to create the Library, taking time and preparations to be finally complete. Angela wanted to use the Library to gather the knowledge and information contained in the City and its inhabitants.

The Library possesses the power of infinite interior space and unique rules that affect its own area. Angela has control of the Library to a certain extension, being able to instantly teleport to any are within it, modify the local Floor environment, and turn any person who has previously turned into a Book back to life or return them again to a Book. The Library can only progress by collecting Light and Books from the people who come inside. Anyone who dies inside the Library is turned into a Book instead of dying and can be returned back to life, but forever trapped within the Library. The Library amplifies the emotions

Since the Library only has control of its interior and limited ways to influence the outside world, Invitations are created and used to reach out to the people who will be its designated targets. Those invited by The Library’s Invitation are called Guests. The Invitations use Books which are of interest to the Guests being invited, under conditions in which acceptance is almost guaranteed. Even if the Invitation can be given to another person, it will always reach its designated group of Guests by some turn of events. Even if the Library has Books and might require more to function, it is very likely that the Books that were created during its process of preparation were just filled with nonsensical information, although, others might contain the information of the facility, Lobotomy Corporation, the people who worked in it, their protocols, Abnormalities, etc, all that was previously known or studied by the facility. Angela can also write Books of her own knowledge to use in the Invitations.

Once someone has signed the Invitation, a door will appear and take the group to the Library, phasing out immediately. It can be in any place and under any sort of conditions, as long the involved people who are going to the Library are the ones who signed the envelope.

The Guests must face an ordeal inside the Library, taken into a Reception, where they will face the Librarians who must fight them. Once one side has fallen, the act of the Reception will end. If the Guests survive, they will take the Books and leave. If the Librarians defend successfully, the Guests are turned into Books. Still, Guests are potentially able to escape their fate within the Library via contingency plans or escape routes, suddenly fleeing instead of being turned into Books.

Introduction: Library Story Stroll (Also Called Storywalk®)

My family absolutely loves our local library. For how small our town is the library does an amazing job providing activities an events for the town’s youth. Holiday parties, animal specialists, guest authors, crafts, clubs, you name our library does it. I have tried to stay as involved as possible since my kids love going there often. I built a really cool racetrack for pinewood-derby-ish cars that the kids built using scrap pine wood and hot glue guns. This was a big hit and it let the librarian know that I am happy to build things to keep the library purring! So, early this year she reached out to me to see if I wanted to build a Storywalk® for the library. Check out the link to see a more detailed explanation of what a Storywalk® is and to see why it has that little «®» with it. I was only the builder in this case so I cannot give you a complete low down on who to credit and how to go about doing so, but please make sure you do your due diligence prior to jumping into this project.

We had to first decide how we wanted the Storywalk to look. You can go from the super simple of a stick with a board to the complex (and insanely expensive) of welded frames, UV-resistant and tempered glass, with stainless steel posts. We decided to split the difference and use pressure treated wood and earth anchors to affix them to the ground. Sam, our librarian, wanted eighteen of them and wanted them to be weather resistant so that they could stay outside during all seasons. So, I went about coming up with some designs by looking at what other folks put together. The only problem I kept running into was finding affordable clear coverings for the boards. With the Covid pandemic in full swing, Lexan sheets were not only hard to come by but insanely expensive. I ended up finding a super-durable and affordable option that I think you will also like.

During this Instructable I want to show you the steps necessary to build eighteen (or any other number) of robust Storywalk® posts for a fraction of the cost other methods might cost you. With the crazy pandemic going on, now, more than ever, it is important to provide our youth with outside, educationally-rich opportunities while still being socially distanced. This project fits the bill perfectly!

Supplies

Supplies necessary to build one Storywalk® post:

Pressure Treated wood for both the top of sign and underside (I used 2×4 stock for both of these)

Step 1: Location!

Central Massachusetts is a very hilly area. Our town center, including the library, sits at the top of a hill. Below the library is a large ball field with additional space for kids to run around and some nice semi-open forested areas too. This was to be our location for the Storywalk®. Around the library, around the ball field, and partially through the woods. I believe the entire loop with all 18 posts is about 0.4 miles. A nice little hike with a good hill to climb at some point during the journey. Wherever you decide to install the Storywalk® make sure to consider the following:

Step 2: Rough Cutting the Materials and Letting Them Dry a Bit

Pressure treated wood is WET! If you plan on sanding and working with pressure treated wood it is best to rough cut it to size and then let it dry for a week or two at a minimum. I cut all of the posts (from 10′ posts) into two five foot sections, each with a 45 degree cut on one end (for mounting the sign). It’s nice doing this outside so you don’t throw PT dust all over the place. Wear a mask and eye glasses and use a circular saw to cut it from both sides (my saw’s depth of cut is only 2-1/2″). I also cut all of my plywood to rough dimension, cutting the sheets into 24″x18″ sections. All of this I stacked down in my basement to let it dry out a bit near my dehumidifier. It was the start of summer so the humidity was already pretty high and even with the dehumidifier running I left the lumber for 10 days to dry out a bit. I put «stickers» between the signs so that they could breathe a bit better and get more air flow through them. You can see in the second to last picture I have all of the rough parts cut out and drying. The weight of the entire mass should keep things from warping too much but you can see in the very last picture that when I removed the posts and such I put a 50 pound bag of salt on top to help keep the signs from warping too much while I shaped the other pieces.

Step 3: Preparing the Storywalk® Signs / Boards

As mentioned in the supplies and intro, I used PT rated plywood. This is not marine grade since I will be putting a stain on the entire shebang during the summer of 2021 (now there is something to look forward too. the summer of 2021 that is, not staining). Also the plastic cover combined with the top «drip cap» should make the plywood pretty darn well protected. I added a nice radius to the corners of all four sides (you really only need to do two of the four but I did all four just in case I didn’t like how one came out). To make things move a bit faster I taped together groups of four of the signs. I then used a yogurt cup to mark a good radius on the corners and cut them on my bandsaw in the taped together groups of four. I used an oscillating spindle sander to clean up the cuts and then pulled apart the packs to sand them with a random orbital sander. I sanded them to 150, which is more than adequate between the type of wood and the environment it will be put in.

Step 4: Making the Lower Sign Braces

The lower braces not only support the sign board but they also prevent the sign board from warping during the drying process and also the subsequent wood movement which is bound to occur. I gave mine a slight Roman Ogee to break the edge a bit and snazz them up just a smidge. I used pressure treated 2×4 stock to make these and ripped the 2×4 into two pieces to speed up the process and it was a whole lot cheaper than by 1×4 stock (isn’t that ridiculous?). I made a small cardboard template so I could get the end treatment identical on both ends of the brace, marked each 2×4 accordingly and then cut everything on my bandsaw. Once I had the ends shaped on the braces I set my bandsaw so that I could rip the brace directly down the middle, making two braces. From there I took all of the pieces (36 since I was making 18 signs and needed 2 per sign) over to the router and cleaned up all of the edges except for the top straight edge, which was to have a 45 degree miter cut along the entire edge. Once I got everything nice and rounded over on the router I set up my table saw to cut a 45 degree cut and then ripped a 45 degree cut along the top edge of the brace so that it would align with the sign board when affixed to the post. I sanded everything to 150 and then made the marks to align the braces along the post. I found center on one of them, marked that with a pencil and then measured out so it would sit centered on a 4×4 post. Then I drilled four holes with the drill press so that I could attach the braces using 3″ PT screws. Braces done, now it’s time to put some pieces together!

Step 5: Attaching the Sign to the Post With the Braces

This is where a lot of «smallish» parts become one big part. You will need to attach the sign board to the post, the braces to the post, and the braces to the sign board to make one robust unit. I used 3″ PT screws to complete this task. The first step is attaching the braces to the post. We had previously marked out the exact locations of the braces on the post and also pre-drilled the braces to be attached to the post. You are going to want to clamp or hold your post securely to make this job easier. I used the front vise on my workbench to hold the post in place. Make sure to correctly line up the lines you made on the braces and to orient the angle correctly with the angle cut on your posts then use three to four 3″ PT screws to attach each brace. From there you will need to draw reference lines on your sign board so that you can line up the sign board with the braces (see pics). Get things lined up as close as you can and then making sure the sign board is centered and then pop a couple of 1-1/2″ PT screws through the sign board and into the post. You will then need to mark exactly where the centers of the braces are (remember they are at an angle). Put one screw into each side of each brace (two screws per brace). Pre-drill at a 45 degree angle as shown in the picture. You should be good as gold at this point with six screws adhering the sign board to the brace and post.

Step 6: Making the Upper «drip Cap»

The keep things nice and tight, dry, and easy to use I created a drip cap for the top of the sign board. I used PT 2×4 stock yet again for this task. These were 24″ long pieces that were about 2-1/4″ wide and 1-1/2″ thick. I cut a dado (a groove) out of the center of each piece that would fit somewhat tightly over both the plastic and the sign board (about 7/16″ wide and 1-1/4″ deep). Test fit this piece prior to cutting all 18 of them. if you are making 18 that is.

Step 7: Sizing and Attaching the Plastic to the Sign Board

The plastic I used to cover the sign boards was ordered for a fraction of the price it would have cost for Lexan. It is not an acrylic material but rather PET, the stuff they make soda bottles out of. My thinking is this, I have seen plenty of acrylic things snap in both and cold weather. How many soda bottles have you seen explode even after freezing what is inside solid? A PET soda bottle can hold over 150 psi. Plus, have you ever, sadly, seen a soda bottle that was left outside (in other words tossed out of a car window) for many years. like ten or more? It might not look like the day it was born but dang it is still just as resilient and as long as it wasn’t too abused it isn’t even that scratched. This stuff is flexible, strong, and mildly scratch-resistant. Sounds like a perfect candidate for this project. And at an insanely low cost there was no reason to use Lexan. can you cut Lexan with scissors? Alright, I am done being a PET salesman. You’ll need to remove the back protective sheeting and then set the plastic sheet on the sign board. Slip a drip cap over the top and then drill a pilot hole through the cap in at least two locations. Use a 1-1/2″ PT screw along with a stainless steel or galvanized washer to affix the drip cap through the plastic and through the sign board. Use a pair scissors and cut the corners round a the bottom of the sign board. Then drill three holes equally spaced at the bottom of the sign board about 1″ from the bottom to accommodate the carriage bolts. Push a rubber washer on the carriage bolt and use a wing nut behind the sign board to tighten the whole thing together (see the last picture).

Step 8: Adjusting the Boards and And Preparing for Installation

At this point your Storywalk boards should be ready to rock and roll! Before you get too ahead of yourself and bring everything to the installation site you might want to consider setting one up at home to make sure everything is hunky dory. I found I had to adjust the bottom of the post by shaving the corners with a pocket knife before slipping them into the receiver of the ground stake. The ground stakes I ordered did the job but I definitely knew I would encounter rocks. lots of them, it is New England after all. Other than that little adjustment everything worked as planned.

Step 9: Installing the Storywalk®

This is the best part, all be it the most exhausting. Getting 18 of these up to the library, even though it is only a couple of miles away, was a real challenge without damaging them. I ended up using my wife’s mini bread mobile (cheap plug, but hey it was my first instructable!) to transport all of the signs at once. Being tiny, four wheel drive, and just fun, it was great driving it around to deliver signs. Whatever the case you will have to consider how you are going to transport these to the «planting» location. To put the ground stakes in I used a sacrificial 4×4 piece to pound on with my sledge hammer. As you can see from the pictures, a few 4×4 pieces were sacrificed for the cause. Yes, I could have manufactured something that could have handled the blows better but I didn’t, so whack a post is what resulted. Amazingly only one ground stake met its demise and folded into origami mush. A couple of the ground stakes were not quite as well manufactured as the others and I had to use a pair of vice grips to pull the pieces together to make sure I could fasten the carriage bolts to tighten the whole thing up. A word of caution, wherever you place these things, if they are along forest edges watch out for the three-leaved evil foe called poison ivy. Man I hate that stuff.

Our Story

Since 2006 we’ve been improving rural children’s literacy in Asia. This is our story.

My name is Tom Stader and I’m the Founder of The Library Project. This is our organization’s story, through my eyes.

I have broken this up into four key periods from The Library Project’s journey so far.

It’s important to tell the story and understand the values we hold and what we are trying to achieve. Perhaps through our story we can motivate others to get involved, to understand that to make an impact is something that is achievable.

A Simple Idea (2006)

A simple idea. A few friends. Nine libraries.

The seeds of The Library Project were planted in 2006 with five friends who wanted to make a difference in the lives of children living in an orphanage and children’s shelter in Dalian, China. I had been volunteering on weekends at the orphanage tutoring some of the children on their English language studies. These were good kids. I also knew the headmaster personally, and was absolutely confident that whatever we decided to do would be appreciated.

We soon came up with a plan. Our simple idea was to donate a library of books to each location. Soon after, we held a used book drive at six Aston English Schools (a local educator that we were working at) in hopes of collecting a couple hundred books for each orphanage. After just one week, we had collected over 3,000 children’s books which far exceeded our expectations.

We shared photos and stories with those who donated books and money and thought, “mission accomplished”. We had achieved our goal and our simple plan was now a reality. Something amazing happened though, people kept donating small amounts of money for more libraries.

As these little unsolicited donations were coming in, I decided to move from China to Vietnam. By this time I’d lived in Asia for five years and had been moving on average every six months. You could say I was restless; looking for my place in Asia. Once I started my new job and had settled into my new home, I formed a new group of friends that continued donating small libraries in our free time. Our next library went into a busy primary school in District 4 of Ho Chi Minh City. We donated 200 newly purchased Vietnamese language children’s books to this small school. This was an important step forward, in that we were began to focus on quality of books (new) and not just the quantity of books (used).

After each library donation we would send more photos and thank you emails to those who financially supported us; and as before, after each email more money came in and soon we were able to to support seven additional library donations in Vietnam. Over the course of the year, we impacted one primary school, four orphanages, a rural HIV/AIDS clinic and a rural woman’s shelter. This simple idea was growing through the kindness of others. More importantly, I was recognizing the great need that was out there.

At the end of 2007 I received an email that would change my life. It was from Kevin Kruse, a serial entrepreneur from the USA, who heard about our small venture and expressed his interest in donating a substantial amount of money. He understood that this simple idea had potential to grow into something with a real potential to impact children’s literacy on a much larger scale than I had previously thought. Like all things, there were strings attached to this potential donation. Firstly, he wanted us to use his funds not to donate libraries, but to create a “real” organization. Secondly, he wanted us to develop clear and solid programs. And finally, to my own surprise, I needed to quit my job and work on The Library Project full time.

The last requirement was a tall order. I had a good job and was quite comfortable and going full time on a charitable start-up would take me out of my comfort zone completely. With that said, I also recognized this was a once in a life-time opportunity. Offers like this do not come around every day.

Soon after receiving Kevin’s offer, I quit my job and dedicated myself 100% to what would become The Library Project.

Finding Our Way (2007-2008)

Founding an organization. Back to China. Twenty-four libraries.

The first thing I did was create a small Board of Directors composed of close friends. This group was a big help with budgeting, legal matters and governance; three things I knew very little about. They also were composed predominantly of entrepreneurs, people who understood what it meant to build companies and knew the questions to ask. Without this group I would have been lost.

The next few months were a whirlwind of activity. I remember sitting in a coffee shop in Bangkok with a few members of our Board trying to come up with a name for our organization. Hours later we hit on “The Library Project.” We soon purchased the website address, went to a restaurant for dinner, and celebrated the creation of our organization.

We were then offered a free office in Xi’an, China. We had very little money left, so a free office was too much to pass up. That month I packed up my things in Vietnam, boarded a plane, and found myself moving to Xi’an. We then hired our first employee and began looking for schools that were in need of library donations.

What we found was surprising; the primary schools we were visiting had huge libraries. Thousands of books, but these books were largely useless. For example, the books we found were very old and not age appropriate for the children in attendance. Also, these libraries were behind lock and key, with children not allowed access to the few books what were age appropriate.

So, why did these schools have libraries that were largely useless? It’s quite simple. Each school had a quota for the number of books that should be found in their library based on their student number. For example, ten books per student. This was largely an arbitrary number that changed from school to school. This expectation put the administration at these schools in a difficult position. They needed to comply with local government regulations, but they also had to balance their already underfunded school budgets. Because of that, the administration went out and purchased the cheapest books they could find, locked the door to the library, and walked away.

With this information we saw a clear need for quality age appropriate children’s books in these schools that the children could actually read.

We ended the year with twenty-four beautiful library donations. These were gorgeous libraries. The children absolutely exploded when they walked into these rooms filled with bright child friendly tables, inviting chairs and kid sized shelving packed with fun age appropriate books. The teachers and local government were also impressed by the professionalism that we were showing.

I ended the year incredibly proud, tired and feeling as if I’d made the right decision to start The Library Project.

Taking Risks (2009)

Taking risks. A very special school. Finding focus.

Our celebration of our 24 library donations was short lived. When returning to the previous year’s library donations we found that over 50% were not being used regularly. We were devastated.

On top of that, we felt that our libraries were not going into schools with the “greatest need.” We were definitely making an impact, but not in the schools that we wanted to support.

That’s when we decided to take a risk, with very little money in the bank, we hired our second employee, Belinda Yu. She was an educator, understood the local education system, and began working with us on fixing the problems we faced. The first thing we did was reach out to communities that were well outside of our comfort zone (both geographically and logistically).

In March we found ourselves five hours outside of Xi’an, on top of a mountain, standing in a school that had the kind of need we were all looking to support. The Liu Lin Primary School was a mud and brick building with 60 students and eight teachers. Within five minutes of being there and seeing the shape the school was in, I had promised the Principal that we would return with a library. How we would actually do that was still unknown.

I remember walking through the school being overwhelmed by two opposing feelings; happiness and anger. Happiness because we had found a school that we absolutely knew we could make an impact in; the children would definitely benefit from a library donation. Anger because this school was beyond anything I could have ever imagined still existing in 2009.

People talk about this “divide between rich and poor.” This idea that there is an arbitrary line that divides our world in two. People talk about it like it’s this crack in the road that someone can simply step over if they work hard. I remember standing in this school thinking about how we have all been lied to. There wasn’t a divide between the rich and poor; there was a canyon.

My final thought was how unbelievably over my head I was. I had very little money, two employees to somehow pay at the end of the month, and I’d just promised these people a library.

Then, I walked into one of the school’s six classrooms and saw my team working with the children; I was blown away. Belinda was standing at the head of the classroom asking the children what kinds of books they would like to read, what their favorite subject was, and what it was like living in their village; she was doing all this with grace, empathy and courage. I remember thinking, “I can’t do this, but my team can.” That moment defined my leadership style going forward. My role from that point forward at the organization was clear, it was to provide my team the space to build the best organization that they could.

When I got back to my hotel that evening I sent out an appeal for donations with a photo of the school attached. By the time I woke-up that next morning the library was fully funded by a group of friends. I was blown away.

A month later we returned to Liu Lin Primary School with a small library. This school was not easy to reach. We had to take a train, a van, then a second van, a boat, then hike up a winding mountain trail. It was a journey. I remember being in the boat looking at all this stuff asking, “How are we going to get these boxes and shelving up to the top of this mountain?” My team just laughed and said, “Wait.”

As our boat pulled up to the base of the mountain, a group of thirty students were waiting for us. The older students had baskets on their backs that we filled with books, the younger students each took a handful of books, and we all walked up the mountain. It was incredible. The children were building their school library.

This tiny library of 600 local language books integrated right into the corner of one of their classrooms. It was by far the brightest part of the classroom. The children (literally) jumped out of their seats and ran toward the shelves tearing into the books; the teachers were getting very angry at how pushy the children were acting. We all just sat back laughing at the scene.

Later that day our team conducted our first Teacher Training Course. This was something we developed that year. This simple 15-minute course changed our organization’s programmatic results. We went from a 50% failure rate to 8% overnight. To this day we have maintained an 8% failure rate. Failure is a good thing. As our programs and training improve, our bar also gets raised for what we consider a successful library. It keeps us on our toes and pushes us to improve programmatically.

This tiny school library donation showed me what we at an organization could achieve. We left Liu Lin Primary School energized and focused. We ended 2009 with 69 additional library donations, each better than the previous.

We had truly gone from a simple idea to an organization that had real reach, real scale and real impact into the lives of children and communities in need.

One Million Children Impacted (Today)

One million. Killer team. Literacy.

Fast forward eleven years, The Library Project is a very different organization. Geographically, we’ve expanded to Vietnam. Our plans are to reach out to additional countries in the coming years. We are dreaming big.

Our programs have stayed razor focused on rural literacy though the donation of local language libraries. We still provide beautiful libraries, but our focus is on getting kids to read more, providing teachers with the tools to be the best teachers they can be, and being a support for the teachers when they need help using their libraries. This is what we do. This is what we will always do.

Our in-country teams are 100% local hires. They are still empowered to build the best organization they can. This has served us well, especially with our International expansion, because each country is subtly different. These subtle differences define culture and make each country special. Each library at its core is the same, but they look different and function differently in each country. This will also never change.

In April 2015, The Library Project team donated their one-millionth book., and as of January 2017, we impacted our one-millionth child. I’m incredibly proud of these milestone. Our team are donating on average one library every day, and in September 2017 they donated an amazing 49 libraries. As a comparison our team is donated the same amount of libraries in one month than we did in the entire 2009 calendar year. This is a testament not only to our ability to scale, but also the continuing need th roughout the countries we are operating in.

We have unbelievable partners that support us. This is an amazing group of donors, volunteers, representatives, Board members, local governments and partner NGOs. I’m humbled every day by the energy they give to us freely so that we can improve rural literacy in the communities we serve. We need more partners because without them and people like you, we would not be able to make the small change that these children deserve. The library story

Borges

Jorge Luis Borges is without doubt one of the most influential and innovative authors of the twentieth century. He is best known for his many short stories, each of which creates a sort of ontological thought experiment in a few brief pages. He wrote poetry and non-fiction as well, reflecting on his immense knowledge of world literature. “The Library of Babel” (“La Biblioteca de Babel”) is one of his best-known and most loved pieces, from the 1941 collection The Garden of Branching Paths. It describes a version of a universal library, containing books with every possible combination of 410 pages of letters, thus containing every book that ever has been and every book that ever could be written, drowned out by an immense quantity of nonsense.

Borges was Argentinian, and aligned himself with many of the country’s right-leaning politicians. He began losing his sight in his thirties, and was appointed director of the national library after Perón’s exile, despite being completely blind. The librarian who narrates “The Library of Babel” references this condition: “Now that my eyes can hardly make out what I myself have written, I am preparing to die…”

When I first launched this website, it included here a quotation from Borges’ 1939 essay “The Total Library” (“La Biblioteca Total”), precursor to his short story, where he describes the contents of the universal library. It would include everything: the minute history of the future, The Egyptians of Aeschylus, the precise number of times the waters of the Ganges have reflected the flight of a falcon, the secret and true name of Rome, the encyclopedia Novalis would have written, Borges’ dreams and daydreams in the dawn of August 14th, 1934, the demonstration of Pierre Fermat’s theorem, the unwritten chapters of Edwin Drood, those same chapters translated into the language of the Garamantes, Urizen’s Books of Iron, the premature epiphanies of Stephen Dedalus that would mean nothing before a cycle of a thousand years, the gnostic gospel of Basilides, the song the sirens sang, the faithful catalogue of the library, and the demonstration of the falsehood of this catalog.

A similar list in “The Library of Babel” adds “the translation of every book into every language, the interpolations of every book into all books,” and “the true story of your death.”

As I said, this quotation was included when the site launched, but unfortunately the lawyers of Borges’ literary estate asked for it to be removed. His estate has opposed every genuine tribute to Borges’ legacy out of the misguided notion that they will profit more from his books if no one else can so much as reference them. For a sense of the absurd lengths to which they have carried this quest, take a look at what they have done to the brilliant work of Pablo Katchadjian, El Aleph engordado, and pause for a moment to honor the lost legacy of Norman Thomas di Giovanni.

Borges co-authored translations of the majority of his work into English with his friend di Giovanni, with whom he shared a generous 50/50 profit-sharing agreement. After Borges’ death, the publisher, in collaboration with his estate, allowed these works to go out of print and commissioned the Hurley translations in order to keep more of the profits for themselves. He was also prevented from re-publishing his work or publishing translations he wrote subsequent to Borges’ death. We can at least take solace in the certainty that Borges’ legacy will outlast these heirs, despite their best efforts.

The Library

As I crossed the threshold of the library, I noticed that all sounds of the street stopped. I shrugged it off as being well soundproofed. I slowly weaved my way through the aisles, finding nothing that drew my attention. As I drew deeper into the depths of the building in, the lights grew dimmer until eventually, the onl light came from candles in brackets along the wall. The books grew darker too, though not in the same sense. They grew… more arcane. Scared, I turned around to leave. I walked briskly back the way I came, but the overhead lights never returned. I retraced my steps, and took different turns all to no avail.

Was that…. movement? My gaze tracked to the end of the aisle I was in and saw a shape moving slowly away from me. I chased after it, calling out. As I got closer, the shape sharpened into that of a man. I asked him breathlessly how to get out of the library. He didnt move. Then, out of nowhere, he whipped his head around. I only caught a glimpse of his face before I threw my arms up to protect my own, and he bit me. Caught my arm good. Down I went, and scrambled away from him. I managed to find my footing, and ran like hell.

My lungs felt like they were about to burst when I finally stopped. I had no idea where I was. I was scared, and exhausted. Before I knew what I was doing, I laid down and went to sleep.

I would love to give you a time when I awoke, but I don’t know for sure. I had lost all sense of time. I dragged my aching body to my feet and stumbled down the hallway. I noticed it getting brighter, the books more lighthearted. I looked up, and saw an ancient lightbulb. I started to run down the hall, glancing upwards as I ran. The lights grew brighter until I caught glimpse of the doors. I ran towards them, freedom so close I could taste it. As I stepped up to the doors, they stayed still. They didnt open. I reached my fingers into the crack in the doors and tried to pry them open. They wouldn’t budge. Locked? I thought. But that idea was shattered as an older man walked to the doors and they slid open for him. He threw me a glance, and I thought I recognized his face. As he tipped his hat to me and walked out into the world it hit me. That man in the aisle. He was leaving. I walked to the open doors behind him and tried to walk out. As I strode towards the open doors, I hit something. It was like walking into a wall, but all that was in front of me was air.

I hurried to the librarian to ask for help. No matter how loudly I asked, she ignored me. She glanced up once, but it was like she was looking past me… Through me. I tried to shove a pile of books over to get her attention, but I couldnt move them. Se calmly reached over, and picked the top book off the pile. I had to figure out what was going on. She stood up and began to walk away, and I grabbed her arm, pulled her back. Her arm didn’t move, but she sort of seemed to be looking for something, and followed where I led. I led her to a table,, and let her go. She looked at the table, and under it, but seemed to decide she didn’t find what she was looking for, and went back along her way.

So thats my story. I’m still here today. We haven’t been busy. But you never know. You may come in sometime, looking for a book. I may take your hand and lead you deeper and deeper into the library. You may catch a glimpse of me and ask for help out. I may just get my freedom, at the cost of yours.

library, traditionally, collection of books used for reading or study, or the building or room in which such a collection is kept. The word derives from the Latin liber, “book,” whereas a Latinized Greek word, bibliotheca, is the origin of the word for library in German, Russian, and the Romance languages.

From their historical beginnings as places to keep the business, legal, historical, and religious records of a civilization, libraries have emerged since the middle of the 20th century as a far-reaching body of information resources and services that do not even require a building. Rapid developments in computers, telecommunications, and other technologies have made it possible to store and retrieve information in many different forms and from any place with a computer and a telephone connection. The terms digital library and virtual library have begun to be used to refer to the vast collections of information to which people gain access over the Internet, cable television, or some other type of remote electronic connection.

This article provides a history of libraries from their founding in the ancient world through the latter half of the 20th century, when both technological and political forces radically reshaped library development. It offers an overview of several types of traditional libraries and explains how libraries collect, organize, and make accessible their collections. Further discussion of the application of the theory and technology of information science in libraries and related fields is included in the article information processing.

The changing role of libraries

Libraries are collections of books, manuscripts, journals, and other sources of recorded information. They commonly include reference works, such as encyclopaedias that provide factual information and indexes that help users find information in other sources; creative works, including poetry, novels, short stories, music scores, and photographs; nonfiction, such as biographies, histories, and other factual reports; and periodical publications, including magazines, scholarly journals, and books published as part of a series. As home use of records, CD-ROMs, and audiotapes and videotapes has increased, library collections have begun to include these and other forms of media, too.

Libraries were involved early in exploiting information technologies. For many years libraries have participated in cooperative ventures with other libraries. Different institutions have shared cataloging and information about what each has in its collection. They have used this shared information to facilitate the borrowing and lending of materials among libraries. Librarians have also become expert in finding information from on-line and CD-ROM databases.

As society has begun to value information more highly, the so-called information industry has developed. This industry encompasses publishers, software developers, on-line information services, and other businesses that package and sell information products for a profit. It provides both an opportunity and a challenge to libraries. On the one hand, as more information becomes available in electronic form, libraries no longer have to own an article or a certain piece of statistical information, for example, to obtain it quickly for a user. On the other hand, members of the information industry seem to be offering alternatives to libraries. A student with her own computer can now go directly to an on-line service to locate, order, and receive a copy of an article without ever leaving her home.

Although the development of digital libraries means that people do not have to go to a building for some kinds of information, users still need help to locate the information they want. In a traditional library building, a user has access to a catalog that will help locate a book. In a digital library, a user has access to catalogs to find traditional library materials, but much of the information on, for example, the Internet can not be found through one commonly accepted form of identification. This problem necessitates agreement on standard ways to identify pieces of electronic information (sometimes called meta-data) and the development of codes (such as HTML [Hypertext Markup Language] and SGML [Standard Generalized Markup Language]) that can be inserted into electronic texts.

For many years libraries have bought books and periodicals that people can borrow or photocopy for personal use. Publishers of electronic databases, however, do not usually sell their product, but instead they license it to libraries (or sites) for specific uses. They usually charge libraries a per-user fee or a per-unit fee for the specific amount of information the library uses. When libraries do not own these resources, they have less control over whether older information is saved for future use—another important cultural function of libraries. In the electronic age, questions of copyright, intellectual property rights, and the economics of information have become increasingly important to the future of library service.

Increased availability of electronic information has led libraries, particularly in schools, colleges, and universities, to develop important relationships to their institutions’ computer centres. In some places the computer centre is the place responsible for electronic information and the library is responsible for print information. In some educational institutions librarians have assumed responsibility for both the library collection and computer services.

As technology has changed and allowed ever new ways of creating, storing, organizing, and providing information, public expectation of the role of libraries has increased. Libraries have responded by developing more sophisticated on-line catalogs that allow users to find out whether or not a book has been checked out and what other libraries have it. Libraries have also found that users want information faster, they want the full text of a document instead of a citation to it, and they want information that clearly answers their questions. In response, libraries have provided Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) services, in which librarians choose information that may be of interest to their users and forward it to them before the users request it.

The changes in libraries outlined above originated in the United States and other English-speaking countries. But electronic networks do not have geographic boundaries, and their influence has spread rapidly. With Internet connections in Peking (Beijing), Moscow, and across the globe, people who did not have access to traditional library services now have the opportunity to get information about all types of subjects, free of political censorship.

As libraries have changed, so, too, has the role of the librarian. Increasingly librarians have assumed the role of educator to teach their users how to find information both in the library and over electronic networks. Public librarians have expanded their roles by providing local community information through publicly accessible computing systems. Some librarians are experts about computers and computer software. Others are concerned with how computer technologies can preserve the human cultural records of the past or assure that library collections on crumbling paper or in old computer files can still be used by people many centuries in the future.

The work of librarians has also moved outside library walls. Librarians have begun to work in the information industry as salespeople, designers of new information systems, researchers, and information analysts. They also are found in such fields as marketing and public relations and in such organizations as law firms, where staffs need rapid access to information.

Although libraries have changed significantly over the course of history, as the following section demonstrates, their cultural role has not. Libraries remain responsible for acquiring or providing access to books, periodicals, and other media that meet the educational, recreational, and informational needs of their users. They continue to keep the business, legal, historical, and religious records of a civilization. They are the place where a toddler can hear his first story and a scholar can carry out her research.

What Chronic Pain Teaches Me About Culture

Hi, world! It’s been a long time since I’ve written here. But I’m feeling reflective, so here I am. 🙂

Over the past four years I have dealt with a lot of physical, chronic pain. It started in Uganda and has continued since moving to MN.

It started with a pothole.

In April 2012, I was riding to visit some friends on a boda boda. It was just getting dark and we hit a pothole. There are potholes everywhere in Uganda but I remember that one because of how I was holding on to the boda behind me and got the wind knocked out of me when we bounced. Within a matter of hours I was in so much pain I could barely turn my head. I saw a doctor after a couple days of terrible pain who said it was likely a whiplash type injury, gave me some muscle relaxers, and suggested I try getting a massage or two. If that didn’t help, she suggested I see a physio (English term for physical therapy). The meds and massage helped enough that I let it go and came back to the States about a month later.

After returning to the US I started to suffer from regular and horrible headaches and migraines. Since then I’ve also been rear ended several times (am I invisible?!) and I continue to deal with neck pain, headaches, migraines, and muscle spasms.

I know. This is kind of personal and may not seem to fit with the types of cultural and library related things I usually write. But I believe it IS culturally related.

You see, over the past few years, I’ve found myself trying many different remedies for my pain, each rooted in it’s own cultural practice of healing.

And in trying all these things, I’ve discovered is that for me it’s the intersection of all these methods and, dare I say, cultures that have led to (some) healing.

I grew up in what I think is a pretty American with regards to health: eat a balanced diet, go to the doctor when you get sick, take meds when you don’t feel well. But as I’ve gone through this journey of regular, chronic pain, I’ve realized that healing is not always as simple as taking a pill.

The other day I went for acupuncture and as I was resting in a chair, needles poking out of me, I thought how different Chinese medicine is, especially when it comes to acupuncture. After the acupuncturist puts in the needles, she says to me: «have a good rest» and I nap or doze for about 45 minutes. And it occurred to me, rest IS healing. And maybe learning about other cultures doesn’t only teach us cursory things about how people live or work, but can also teach us how to heal.

I’m not healed by any stretch of imagination. I still have 3-4 headaches or migraines a week, which often result in staying in bed more than I’d like. But I’m learning that if I let go and trust the ways in which people heal from multiple cultures, healing does come.

And grace. By giving myself grace walk through this journey instead of fighting the pain, I can use it as a learning experience. A chance to learn about other cultures, other healing practices, and about myself.

Where Does Your Heart Live?

Last Saturday, the air smelled like smoke. Wildfires in Northern MN and Canada, sent smoke down to the Twin Cities, creating air quality warnings and filling the air with the faint smell of smoke. When I woke up I went downstairs to make coffee and with the windows open, the cool morning air smelled just like Uganda: a bit of smoke, the smell of burning, cool air, and sunshine. My mind and heart were immediately brought back to a place I call home. I felt sentimental all day, thinking about my Ugandan friends, wondering how they are doing, and missing East Africa.

Contrast that sentimentality with an overwhelming feeling of gratitude 3 days earlier as I drove home from dinner with friends at a local restaurant. Gratitude for the city we live in, the community we are developing, the green leaves, and warm weather. I just felt so thankful for where we are now.

It was strange, in some ways, to feel such love for two very different places within a couple of days. I almost didn’t know how to hold my love for both at the same time. It made my realize that my heart lives in both places, here in MN and in Uganda. And, if I’m honest, my heart lives in many places.

Sometimes I feel sad that I am not one of those people that has lived in ____ «my whole life». I think about how last month we traveled to Tuscon to attend my husband’s best-friend-since-Kindgerten’s wedding. I don’t have a best friend since Kindergarten or a friend I’ve known my whole life.

But I have something just as precious: friends around the country and the world who have shared their stories with me and been a part of my story during the times in my life I needed them most. I’m realizing that with all the moving I’ve done, including at least five places in my twenties, my heart lives in a lot of places. I’ve left pieces of my heart behind that say, «I was here and I love this place. There are people here that I love.»

I’m also realizing that neither situation is better than the other. It’s not somehow better to have lived in one place for a lifetime and it’s not better that I’ve moved a lot. There are advantages and disadvantages to both and the situations are just different. No matter if someone has moved a lot or if a heart lives in one place, we all have the power and choice to tell a good story. I’ve chosen to tell my story in many different places. Some people choose to tell their story in one place. But I’m learning that it’s not the setting that makes the story. It’s the characters. Our stories are beautiful because of how we choose to live and love others.

Ultimately, my story and my heart are scattered around the country and the world. And I am grateful.

Reading Africa and the World

I recently heard this TED Talk and was thoroughly inspired by this woman’s story of reading a book from every country in one year.

After hearing the TED Talk, I looked up her blog because I wanted to learn more. For example, how did she read that many books in one year? And how did she choose just one book from an entire country? And, of course I wanted to know: What books did she read from East Africa? I was totally inspired and fascinated by this project. (I just checked out her book to learn more!)

As I was poking around her blog, I found a post that mentioned an Africa Reading Challenge. Basically, a challenge to read 5 books from Africa in one year. Again, I was fascinated.

Most of the people who read this blog know that I am not much of a reader. I read only a handful of books a year, if I’m honest. It’s kind of embarrassing, actually, considering that I am a librarian. I say only half-jokingly that I have a minor panic attack when a student comes up to me and asks: «Do you know a good book I could read?»

When I do read, I am most often drawn to books about Africa or other parts of the world, which is probably why I’ve found both of these challenges so fascinating. Obviously from the title of my blog, I believe that stories are important. More than that, I believe that by learning the stories of people who are different from us, we will gain perspective and grow in understanding of the people around us. If we are willing to listen to others’ stories, we learn from them and their experiences. I often say that if I don’t immediately click with someone or if someone drives me crazy, I probably need to learn his or her story so I can be more gracious towards them.

I recently finished reading The Queen of Katwe, which was such a fun book for me to read since it’s about a girl in Uganda. I currently have Congo: the Epic History of a People checked out from the library. But these different challenges have also reminded me the importance of reading about things and places I know nothing (or little) about. Reading about Uganda is fun because it’s home to me in a lot of ways. But if I really want to grow in my understanding of the world, I need to look beyond what is comfortable and be willing to listen to the world.

Focusing on the Positive

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about my role as a librarian and where or how I fit into the librarian «mold». This academic year I am the Chair of the Library Department and it’s been such an interesting (and challenging) experience as I work through what it means to be in this leadership role. New things often cause me to question my abilities and myself and, to be honest, I’m struggling a lot lately with self doubt.

If I am willing, new things can also help me learn about myself and my strengths. Not feeling like an expert doesn’t mean I am bad at those things. I am learning that while I may not always consider myself an expert librarian, I am really good at doing certain things which help my department and students. If I don’t focus on these good things I am easily intimidated, wondering if I am the right person for this leadership role or for the library. (My poor husband has talked me off the «I’m quitting my job!» ledge more than once this academic year.)

I am learning so much about myself and about leadership this year. And about how to believe in myself when I feel inadequate and overwhelmed. But I am reminding myself to focus on the positive and on my strengths.

And I am reminding myself (again and again!) that doing hard things, the things that scare me or feel overwhelming, are always worth doing.

I feel so out of my comfort zone lately. So here’s a reminder of a time I was totally in my element: in Africa. 🙂

A Human Library

Just a recap: a Human Library is an event which encourages people to not judge a book by it’s cover. Volunteers agree to be Human «Books» and share their stories. «Readers» can check out the Books, hear the stories, and then engage in meaningful conversation. Many, similar events allow for one-on-one conversation but we chose to have small groups meet with the Books. Moderators helped move the conversations along.

It was a lot of work, I’ll be honest. But I was invited to work with a wonderful group of people to figure out logistics, find Books, create signs, recruit Moderators, etc. We had a lot of details to organize.

And in the end, it was beautiful. As one of the organizers, I was too busy running around to check out a Book. But I did get to walk around during each session and simply observe. It was hard not to tear up a bit, seeing people of many ages, cultures, and ethnicities sitting together, talking, listening, and sharing.

I heard people say these things afterward:

«I never saw the library more alive as it was yesterday.»

«The room was buzzing all morning.»

«The energy was palpable.»

«That was life changing.»

I know there are crazy things going on in our world. I know there are bad people out there. But I can’t help but wonder: how much of the awfulness might be solved if people would just talk? And listen? Human beings have a lot of things to disagree about. But our stories are more similar that we realize. What would happen if we focused on what we have in common? On what brings us together? Instead of what tears us apart?

I like to think the world would be a better place.

Forever lost: How Russians hunt for Ivan the Terrible’s library

Some believe Ivan hid the collection somewhere in Moscow or another Russian city.

This story began ages ago. In the 15th century the Turks conquered Constantinople and toppled the all powerful Byzantine Empire. Many Greeks of the Orthodox faith fled and Thomas Palaeologus, brother of the last Byzantine emperor Constantine XI, was among them. He took refuge in Rome, but not before (if legend is to be believed) packing up the library added to by each Byzantine emperor and taking it with him.

The library contained around 800 books, including unique masterpieces of Greek and Roman literature. They were inherited by Thomas’s daughter Sophia Palaiologina who left Rome for Russia and wedded Ivan III, the Grand Prince of Moscow. It was Sofia who brought the library to Russia but the collection became well-known as the “library of Ivan the Terrible (Ivan IV).”

The tsar with a brutal reputation, Sofia’s grandson, not only inherited the library (also known as “Libereya” from liber – “book” in Latin) but expanded it by sending his men all over Europe to collect rare folios and manuscripts. Some believe Ivan hid the collection somewhere in Moscow or another Russian city. After his death in 1584, the library disappeared without a trace.

At least, this is what legend tells us. Christopher von Dabelov, a 19th century historian from Derpt (now Tartu, Estonia) claimed to have seen a list of folios from the missing collection. Such a find would be the equivalent of unearthing the Holy Grail, but for bookworms, and the list allegedly included 142 volumes of Titus Livius’ History of Rome (historians are currently only familiar with 35 of them), a full version of Cicero’s De re publica (only fragments were preserved in Western libraries), and an unknown poem by Virgil…to name but a few of the manuscripts Libereya apparently contained.

Just a big hoax?

On the other hand, many specialists remain skeptical about the library’s existence. Alexander Filyushkin, an associate professor of Russian history at the St. Petersburg State University, told Komsomolskaya Pravda why he doubts the legend.

Some European chronicles from the 16th to 18th centuries mentioned the legendary library, but it always sounds more like a myth with no solid proof, Filyushkin believes.

Tireless searchers

And of course, many suspect the Moscow Kremlin is hiding Libereya.

Archeologists and adventurers have examined countless locations throughout the years: 19th century emperors and even Joseph Stalin let scientists into the Kremlin, hoping that they would find the priceless Byzantium books, but to no avail.

“If someone found the library they would be as famous as Yuri Gagarin” Filyushkin believes. Despite the unlikelihood Libereya exists, it remains a popular myth. As Alexander Vexler, an archeologist from Moscow, joked in an interview, “Of course the library of Ivan the Terrible exists. How can it not exist if it’s been feeding journalists with material to write about for so long?”

I’m including a list at the end of the guide for all combat and key pages, and when I have them all I’ll make another list of where to find them for easy reference.

Game Progression Tips

If you lose the Book of the Distortion or Book of Lobotomy Corporation, pick any invitation that doesn’t require them and win. Angela will provide you with another copy. You tend to only lose those books if you quit to title instead of failing the battle. Failing the battle generally returns the Book of the Distortion and Book of Lobotomy Corporation to you.

From game start to Urban Legend, pick up the key pages of Mars (1x), Walter (3x), Olga (1x), Gyeong-mi (3x). These all have 2 slots for dice to let you dish out more attacks for stronger starting turns. Card draw will be an issue until Urban Plague’s third path, first invitation and first path, second invitation.

To obtain the Book of Full Stop Office, you need to defeat any of the three while their Emotion is at 1. Once their Emotion hits 2 they drop their own books and stop dropping Book of Full Stop Office. This applies to other situations where you need the general office book instead of specific character books to progress.

Urban Nightmare I’d say go for the third path to get 3x Emma’s Key Page for blunt damage stacking (add blunt passives from other key pages). I’d tackle the fourth path next to get more blunt pages from the Puppets to make Emma an absolute monster. Repressed Flesh is one of my favourite Urban Nightmare cards with draw 1 card, block, blunt x2, blunt counter.

I’d wait on doing Gebura’s Little Red Riding Hooded Mercenary Abnormality battle until you’ve done all of Urban Nightmare. It’s a rough one. Completing Malkuth’s floor realization gives you access to E.G.O cards. These are powerful Abnormality based cards that include high dice rolls or mass attacks that any of your librarians can have access to. You’ll want to have E.G.O ready when going into Star of the City.

Story Related
Story related achievements are unlocked automatically as you progress through the game. None can be missed. Library Rank, Floor Realizations and Receptions all fall under this. General Invitations are an exception, as they are not required for the main story.

Library Rank
The Library Rank is based on certain task milestones. These involve unlocking floors, completing specific battles and obtaining unique books. New ranks unlock new battles and story progression.

The Road
Reach the rank of a Canard.
Unlocked on starting a new game. A Canard is an unfounded rumor or story.

Life and Death
Reach the rank of an Urban Myth.

A Single Candle
Reach the rank of an Urban Legend.

Hospital
Reach the rank of an Urban Plague.

A Dream Shattered
Reach the rank of an Urban Nightmare.

One Night I Count the Stars
Reach the rank of Star of the City.

Impuritas Civitatis
Be considered an Impurity.

Floor Realization
Floor Realization occurs after maxing out that floor’s librarians to 5. Defeat the accompanying boss battle to unlock the final Abnormality pages for that floor and to fully realize the floor.

The Will to Stand up Straight
Fully realized the Floor of History.

The Rationality to Maintain Discretion
Fully realized the Floor of Technological Sciences.

The Hope to be a Better Person
Fully realized the Floor of Literature.

The Fearlessness to keep on Living
Fully realized the Floor of Art.

The Expectation for the Meaning of Existence
Fully realized the Floor of Natural Sciences.

The Courage to Protect
Fully realized the Floor of Language.

Those who are Faithful and Trustworthy
Fully realized the Floor of Social Sciences.

Endings
For the multiple endings you will need to fight the Black Silence three times.
If the Lower Layer and Hokma’s Realization are incomplete, you’ll be forced into Angela’s ending with Foreword. If the Middle Layer and Binah’s Realization are incomplete, you’ll be forced into Roland’s ending with Prière pour aimer la douleur. If you’ve done everything, you’ll get the That’s This, and This is That ending along with the final Realization and climax.
You can also choose which ending you want if you’ve done the previous realizations.

Foreword
Roland was rejected. Angela could not forgive him.
This is the ending where Angela chooses her freedom, reigning terror over the city for 13 years with her library before she is killed by a nameless Bookhunter.

Prière pour aimer la douleur.
Angela was snubbed. Roland could not forgive her.
This achievement name is in French. It means «Prayer to love the pain.»
This is the ending where Angela chooses to forgive Roland, but Roland chooses to kill Angela before she’s undos everything she’s done.

That’s This, and This is That
Roland and Angela chose to forgive each other.
This is the true ending, in which case you have to do the Floor of General Works Realization, then fight the Distorted Reverb Ensemble, then survive 8

turns against an Arbiter and Claw. Do all this to see the ending and to be rewarded with combat pages from your entire ordeal.

Receptions
Pretty straightforward here. Complete the related reception for an achievement.

Two Shakes of a Rat’s Tail
Complete your first reception. You’ve made your baby steps!

From a Place of Love
Complete the reception of Tomerry.

And Then is Heard No More
Complete the reception of the Crying Children.

Gone Angels
Complete the reception of the Black Silence.

Children of the City
Complete the reception of 얀샋ㄷ요무 (Distorted Yan).
*This is not a missed translation, but rather a joke with QWERTY keyboards. This reception name is how you’d spell Distorted Yan if you typed in English while using a Korean keyboard. In the Korean version, they do the opposite. Other languages have their own interpretation of Distorted Yan.

* Credit to the Library of Ruina Wiki for explaining the joke, as I don’t understand Korean and would have missed it.

Iron Lotus
Complete the reception of Xiao.

Dead Silent
Complete the reception of the Reverberation Ensemble.

Finale
Complete the reception of the Distorted Reverb Ensemble.

Receptions: Challenges
Some of the achievements here require you do have certain floors or Key Pages equipped. You’ll likely get Emotional Peak naturally in a drawn out battle. Arbitrating the Arbiter is the challenging one, with your team suffering no casualties while defeating the boss. I’ll come up with a strategy when I get to that point.

Binah Has Logged In
Complete a reception with Binah offering her assistance.
Simply complete any invitation with Binah in the group. Binah does not unlock when her floor unlocks, so you’ll have to wait until the Red Mist reception to pick this one up at the earliest.

Emotional Peak
Complete a reception after both sides’ Team Emotion Levels have reached 5.

«You know my dream, right?»
Defeat a guest from the Thumb or the Index with Pete’s Key Page equipped.
The Index Proselytes can be fought for this achievement. Equip a librarian with Pete’s key page, and give it Oscar’s Unrelenting and Speed passives. Unrelenting gives you a safety net for the fragile Pete. The Index Proselytes generally like to tunnel on one librarian, chosen at random when the act starts. If Pete is not focused you should be able to keep it alive long enough to deal a killing blow to one of the enemies. If Pete is focused, you’ve got at least one extra turn thanks to Unrelenting. Just hope that they don’t all roll 6.

I’ll Face Myself
Defeat the Red Mist as Gebura.
You have 3 floors to play with against the Red Mist. You can sacrifice two floors to get the Red Mist low and wipe her on Gebura’s first turn before Kali can transform into the Red Mist again. Binah’s floor is good to use as the second choice as she can increase the cost of Red Mist’s mass attack or lock out the leftmost speed die, allowing you to pile on her for hits.

«. To die at the hands of a hero.»
Finish off Myo once and for all as Gebura with the Red Mist’s Key Page equipped.
In the second reception of R Corp in the 4th act, you fight against Maxim, Myo, Nikolai and Rudolph. If any of them hit 20 charges they’ll use mass attack pages. You get two floors in this reception so you could use one floor to kill Maxim, Rudolph and Nikolai and get Myo weak. Let the floor die and swap to Gebura’s floor for a quick and easy Myo kill.

Oriando Furioso
Defeat Olivier and Argalia using the Combat Page ‘Furioso’.
Furioso is the E.G.O page of Black Silence, Roland’s unique key page. This is unlocked in the fight against Olivier. To use Furioso, you need to use all 9 of the Black Silence’s unique combat pages. Then simply land the killing blow with Furioso.
Olivier is a solo fight with the Black Silence.
The Blue Reverberation: Church of Gears encounter did not count for this achievement when I used Furioso on Argalia at 265 HP (He retreats at 250 HP. Furioso hit for 29 and forced him to retreat.)
The Argalia solo battle at the end of the Blue Reverberation Ensemble is where you’ll need to finish off Argalia with Furioso. At 25 HP left Argalia will use a special combat page on his 99 speed die. Counter it with Furioso.

«Sending you here was worth my while.»
Defeat the Purple Tear as Roland.

Arbitrating the Arbiter
Finish the final reception without any participant being incapacitated.

An Unexpected Guest
Send a General Invitation.

The Story of the City
Complete all receptions accessible by General Invitations.

Your Shield
Stagger a guest by deflecting.
Deflecting is caused by using a defensive dice while your enemy uses an offensive dice. If your dice rolls higher, you deflect the attack and deal stagger damage.

Do Cloned Rabbits Dream of Rapid Gashes?
Have 6 copies of the same Combat Page in hand.
You’ll need to complete the second reception of R Corp to have access to the combat page «Clone» from any of the Complete Books of R Corp. Clone is a 1 cost that copies the most expensive page in hand and adds a copy of it to your hand. So equip 3 copies of clone and 3 copies of the same 2+ cost card. You can use Full-Stop Office’s Liwei key page to add 3 single-use ranged cards and use them so that your deck will only draw clone and your clone target card afterwards.

Mutually Assured Destruction
Have a guest and a librarian perish at the same time.
Use the Floor of History with the Abnormality page «Footfalls» on an early game encounter. Weaken an enemy and have your librarians take damage until they get low on HP and explode, killing both themselves and the enemy. Footfalls activates when the librarian attempts to attack a target.

Defeat 5 guests through Burn damage in a single reception.
Malkuth’s Floor of History has Ashes: When hit, inflict 1-3 burn to the attacker. The Unstable Page of the Crying Children inflicts 1-2 burn on hit and 1-2 burn to the enemy when being hit. The Dawn Office also has passives for burn on hit, though I’d apply Yuna’s passive to a better key page. Burn loses 1/3 of it’s stack every turn, so you have some leeway to let them burn to death. If you want Feather Shield to reliably win clashes, use Combat Preparation to give all allies 2 endurance next scene.
The General Invitation Jeong’s Office (3 Urban Plague or 3 Urban Nightmare books) is a good place for this, as it’s a 5v5 and they mostly use weak pages suitable for Feather Shield/Combat Preparation to manage their HP while applying burn. If they get really low and still need a couple stacks, just let them attack you freely for Ashes/Crying Children burn stacks.

Silence, Guest!
Defeat a guest suffering from Burn, Bleed, Feeble, Disarm, Fragile, Paralysis, and Bind.
There’s a few ways to go about this. Forceful Gesture is an easy way to have Feeble, Bind and Disarm in one attack. The key page Unstable Page of the Crying Children inflicts burn on hit or being hit. Bleed and Paralysis have a number of low cost cards that can be used. Fragile has the least amount of combat cards. Build a deck that includes all these things and slap it on your whole team. in a 5v5 battle just have everyone pile on one enemy to inflict all the things and kill it.

Power Overwhelming
Gain 15 Strength in a single Scene.
Use The Red Mist’s Page with these passives:
Yuna’s Page: Lone Fixer (+3 STR)
The Carnival: Remembrance (+2 STR if ally died)
A Shi Fixer’s Page: Kizuna/Extreme Fatigue (+1 STR if ally died, 2 times. So +2 STR)
That’s +7 STR from passives. Sacrifice 4 librarians with the Mountain of Corpses Abnormality Page (negative emotion coins) for another +4 STR (+10). Then use 2x Focus Spirit for (2x +3 STR=+16!). Done.

This Might Sting

Inflict 60 Bleed to a single guest.
You’ll want to use the Floor of Literature’s Abnormality page Obsession for this, as it lets you apply twice as many bleed stacks. Shouldn’t be too difficult with 4-5 librarians using slash bleed attacks while equipped with Kurokumo Clan pages/passives. You will need negative emotion coins to get the Abnormality page, so try to lose clashes. Can be done in the Tomerry fight, similar to the achievement To the Blood Moon. You might not get both achievements in one run there, as 60+bleed will make Tomerry die quite fast.

A Singular Strike
Deal 150 damage to a guest with a single attack.
Hokma’s Floor of Religion realization no longer gives this achievement.

Boundary of Death
Roll the maximum value when using ‘Boundary of Death’.
Boundary of Death is a unique combat page for Yujin’s Key Page. You get these from the Shi Association invitation. Boundary of Death has a roll range of 1-4, and if it rolls the maximum it does 50

damage. Just use it until it rolls the maximum for the achievement. Floor of Literature’s Funny Prank Abnormality forces the first die that a librarian uses to roll minimum or maximum, effectively making it a 50% chance to get this achievement per use.

Breaking Their Immersion
Clear an Abnormality battle.
Abnormalities are monsters created from the physical manifestation of the human mind. Most of these creatures were found in Lobotomy Corp, and make their appearance in Library of Ruina through boss battle books. Defeating the abnormality grants 3 pages to pick from when the team’s emotion hits the next level.

Overwritten
Use an Abnormality page.
You’ll be using a lot of Abnormality pages in battles to usually give yourself an edge. Green cards tend to be helpful with little downsides. Red ones usually have a trade-off or penalty if requirements are not met.

Borrowed EGO
Use an E.G.O page.
E.G.O pages are unlocked after realizing a floor. Malkuth’s Floor or History is the first one to be realized and grants the use of 5 E.G.O pages. E.G.O pages are cards that any librarian can use. After use they need to recharge by gaining emotion coins.

The Abnormality Becomes Me!
Use an E.G.O page that synchronizes its user with the Abnormality.
The first E.G.O synchronize page is found on the Floor of Technological Sciences after realizing the floor. When the floor hits emotion 3 during an invitation, pick Der Freischültz’s Magic Bullet. Using this E.G.O page transforms the selected target into the abnormality Der Freischültz for 3 turns, allowing use of unique attack pages.

One Fell Swoop
Defeat 5 guests at once using a single die of a Mass Attack.
The first Mass Attack pages come from realizing Malkuth’s Floor of History. Fourth Match Flame is a 12-40 slash attack with Mass-Summation. Green Stem is a Mass Attack-Individual with 3-9, 3-9, 3-10 piercing. Summation means that all the dice values on the enemy’s card are added together to clash against the Fourth Match Flame’s single die. Individual means each die on Green Stem only clashes with one opposing die.
So in this case you’ll want to weaken the enemy team and pick Fourth Match Flame.

The Red Mist Makes Her Return
Have Gebura manifest the E.G.O of the Red Mist during a reception.
This occurs in the second path, second row of Star of the City. The reception is against Kali, who transforms into The Red Mist at 50% HP.

Rake in the Sheets
Use 4 pages generated by the Abnormality page ‘Rake’ during a single reception on the Floor of Social Sciences.
One librarian can use the Abnormality page Rake. When this user staggers an enemy, they steal two combat pages and reduce the cost by 2. Use both pages. Stagger another enemy with this librarian, use the two pages again and the achievement is yours.

Defeat 5 guests marked by the Abnormality page ‘Request’ in a single reception on the Floor of Technological Sciences.
The first enemy hit by the user of Request marks that enemy. The marked enemy has a blue icon below it to indicate the mark. Simply kill each enemy one at a time in any battle that has 5 enemies.

You Shall Not Mass!
Use the Combat Page ‘Ever-repeating Performance’ on a Scene where a guest planned to use a Mass Attack page on the Floor of Art.

Shield Block n’ Bash
Deal 100 total damage using the Abnormality page ‘Lean, Bloody Wings’ in a single Act of the Floor of Religion.
The Purple Tear’s key page on guard stance using Serpentine Barrier can do this with ease. Serpentine Barrier has 3 counter attack dice that are defense. Slap on the passives of Sweeper’s Liquified Flesh and Walter’s Your Shield for +2 block power. Throw in some other defensive combat pages with light gain/page draw and block your way to victory!

Time attack
Defeat 3 guests after selecting the Abnormality page ‘Fervent Beats’ during a single reception on the Floor of General Works.
Fervent Beats gives a single user 4 Strength, 4 Endurance, 4 Haste, 4 Protection and changes all resistances to ineffective. The user dies after 3 scenes.

Forbidden Clown
Activate the ability of the Abnormality page ‘Nix’ on the Floor of Natural Sciences.
To activate Nix, one librarian needs the Abnormality pages of Greed, Hate, Despair and Wrath. All of these Abnormality pages are negative emotions. You can lose clashes or use the Stigmatize combat page to generate negative emotion coins.

*Easiest way to go for this is during the Blue Reverberation Ensemble fight vs Oswald. Take 4 expendable characters that will buy time and lose clashes. These characters don’t need passives. I sacrificed 4x A Night Awl’s Page with 3x Unlock-I, 3x Opportunity Spotted, 3x Scattering Slash. Tiphereth will want a strong page using pierce damage, as she’ll be doing the heavy lifting. When Oswald tries to use his special page, clash it with one of your expendables and ignore trying to stagger them out of it. Kill Ms.Mermaid, then Mr. Knife. For E.G.O; only The Sword Sharpened with Tears can’t clash with Oswald’s forced stagger. It can seal his dice next scene if you use another E.G.O with Mass Attack to absorb his attack first. Once you have Nix your Tiphereth is basically unstoppable.

Complete a Star of the City-level or above reception after selecting the Abnormality page ‘Mountain of Corpses’ on the Floor of Language.
Mountain of Corpses kills all librarians except the one that is selected. The user gains max light capacity, light restoration, strength, protection and haste proportional to the number of librarians killed for the rest of the battle. The Cane Office reception is a decent place to attempt this one, as it’s a 3v3 fight. Eliminate two of the enemies and lose clashes with your block cards to farm up negative emotion coins while negating damage taken. You can also use the combat page Stigmatize to generate negative emotion coins. Martina or Nemo are optimal. Martina uses a strong single attack and weaker multi-hits. Nemo uses mostly defensive pages with one strong single hit on his 4 cost.

Activate the ability of the Abnormality page ‘The Beast’ on the Floor of Philosophy.
One Librarian needs the Abnormality pages of Long Arms (positive emotion), Big Eyes (negative emotion) and Small Beak (negative emotion). When you hit emotion level 5, pick The Beast and give it to that librarian.

Gimme a Biiiig Hug!
Lower the Cost of a 4-Cost page to 0 with the Abnormality page ‘Happy Memories’ and use it on the Floor of History.
Happy Memories picks the highest cost page in hand and marks it. Every time this page is used, it lowers the light cost by 1. Make sure to pick the user that has a 4 cost card in hand before choosing the abnormality card. Use a draw card deck to cycle in the marked card.

To the Blood Moon
Deal 40 damage at once with the third die of the E.G.O page ‘Sanguine Desire’ on the Floor of Literature.
Sanguine Desire is a 5 cost E.G.O page with three slash attacks of 4-10, 3-9 and 4-6. Enemies do not lose bleed stacks when rolling the attacks on this page. The third attack gains power by 2x the amount of bleed stacks on the target. Urban Plague’s Kurokomo Clan Key pages have passives that increase the amount of bleed stacks you make on a target. Tomerry is a good boss to fight for this, as it is weak to slash damage and has 300 HP. Build up your emotion in the first battle, unlocking Sanguine Desire before going into the second battle. Pile on the bleed to Tomerry turn 1, then smash it with Sanguine Desire turn 2 for an easy achievement, and probably a kill too.

Burning books is how you get new combat and key pages.

You’ll end up burning hundreds upon hundreds of books.

Acquired all the listed rewards from a book that contains an Objet d’art page.
The earliest you can do this is with the Book of Mars. Mars is also the first 2 slot speed dice key page, so you’ll want to pick that up.

Engraved Memory
Equip a Battle Symbol.
Battle Symbols are accessories. Most also have minor stat boosts. Some can be earned by defeating certain enemies once, others need multiple times. Some have specific requirements such as equipping a particular key page and killing a specific enemy X times. The requirements are hidden, so check the Battle Symbol Guide listed below for more information.

Inherited Power
Transfer a passive ability.
Passive ability transfer is unlocked when the Library reaches the rank of Urban Plague (Lv 15). This lets you moves passives from one key page to another to improve them. There’s a limit on how many abilities a key page can have in total, as well as an ability cost limit. The point limit increases as your library rank increases (6/8/10).

Whoopsie-daisy!
Enter a combat phase without slotting any Speed die for all librarians who can act. Your finger probably slipped for this one.
If an enemy is only using defensive dice, you can pass a turn to get this without penalty. You might also get this accidentally by double tapping spacebar.

Stories is a library that shows a horizontal progress like Instagram stories.

This project has been forked and extended from shts/StoriesProgressView.

The person in these pictures and the pictures in the sample app is Yui Kobayashi.

Как вести диалог в библиотеке на английском языке

Специалисты подсчитали, что за минуту двери библиотеки открываются 5 раз. А когда вы в последний раз посещали библиотеку? И знаете ли вы, что английское слово library можно использовать с двумя различными предлогами: at the library и in the library. В большинстве случаев они схожи по значению, но первое словосочетание указывает расположение относительно других объектов в городе, а второе означает, что вы в помещении самой библиотеки (внутри – inside).

Каждый знает, что получить заветную книгу без читательского билета (a library card) невозможно. Хотя в Амстердаме в аэропорту Схипхол есть необычная библиотека, работающая на доверии. About the author

James W.P. Campbell

Dr. James Campbell is an architect and architectural historian. He has practised as an architect in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and the United States. He and Frank Salmon together formed the MSt in Building History, a course in the Faculty run jointly with English Heritage.

Dr. Campbell is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and Chairman of the Construction History Society. He is Director of Studies and Fellow in both Architecture and History of Art in Queens’ College.

He has appeared on a number of television and radio programmes including Divine Designs (Channel 5), Modern Marvels (the History Channel), Making History (Radio 4), Ancient Megastructures (National Geographic Channel), the Today Programme (Radio 4), Robert Elms show (Radio London), The One Show (BBC 1) and Excess Baggage (Radio 4).

His research focuses on three areas: the development of building construction; 17th architecture (particularly Wren and Hawksmoor); and the history and development of libraries. His PhD looked at the work of Wren and seventeenth-century carpentry. His first book, Brick: a World History(2003), was featured as Guardian ‘book of the week’ and is available in eight languages. His book Building St Paul’s(2007) provides an introduction to the key issues in seventeenth century architecture and building construction through a retelling of the story of the building of the cathedral. He has just completed a book on the history of libraries and editing a book on staircases which are both out in autumn 2013.

So you’re a new parent — Congratulations! By now I’m sure you’ve read all the books (and magazines, and blogs, and webpages…) about the crazy-wonderful magic that’s happening in your baby’s brain; like how reading aloud to your child creates a firestorm of neural connections during their earliest years. Or maybe you’re the parent of a toddler or preschooler, and your pediatrician told you that reading aloud every day will strengthen your parent-child bond and help get them ready for kindergarten. Either way, your public library has something for you: Storytime!

I’m sure you have an idea of what storytime is: librarian reads picture book to kids, kids are entertained. But there’s so much more to it than that! Not to worry, here are tips for first-timers:

Most libraries will break storytime into four targeted age groups: baby, toddler, preschool, family, and specialized. Here is what you’ll see at each one:

Baby Storytime will have you gently bouncing, singing, tickling and playing with your baby. The librarian will model ways to bring the book to life with your child, and you’ll have plenty of time to connect with other parents.

Toddler Storytime is much more active, with songs and rhymes that will get you moving. The books we read will be interactive, engaging you and your child in telling the story. If your little one’s graduated from crawling to confident walking, toddler storytime is for you.

Preschool Storytime is what usually comes to mind when you think of a storytime. We’ll practice more complicated rhymes that play on this age group’s developing sense of humor, and spend more time reading lengthier stories.

Family Storytime is designed for a mixed age group, from birth to age 6, as they generally aren’t all added to one family at the same time. You’ll see a mix of the activities above, so kids from each age group are engaged.

Specialized Storytimes are designed to make storytime more welcoming and accessible for families with specific learning needs, non-dominant cultural identities, or who speak languages spoken at home other than English. Your library might offer a storytime for children who are neurodivergent, or entirely in Spanish or Somali.

You’ll be playing, singing, and moving

Storytime is active! Research has shown that a few specific activities help kids get ready to read and learn when they get to kindergarten: reading, singing, talking, writing, and playing. At storytime, you’ll be doing more than sitting for a story — you’ll be playing, rhyming, singing, and moving along with your child.

Join in!

While your librarian leads storytime, your little one is actually learning from you. When you show that you value what’s happening in storytime by participating, their learning grows exponentially. Plus, you have the chance to build your own repertoire of bedtime, clean-up, and other themed songs. Please leave distractions like cell phones in bags or pockets, and chat with other parents afterwards. Librarians know that parents like to mingle, which is why unstructured play usually follows storytime (more on that later).

It’s about love

Language and literacy skills are part of storytime’s power, but it’s also about bonding and quality time spent with your child. Kids who are read-aloud-to by their parents develop a stronger relationship over time.

We’re all in this together

You aren’t the only one who could use more sleep, and who may or may not have pulled into the parking lot with a waffle stuck to your face. Storytime is a place to check-in with other parents, seek advice, and support one another. I’ve watched caregivers make playdates, share struggles, and crowd-source the best baby carriers. Don’t feel shy, and do make friends.

No one is perfect, but it’s okay

Many storytimes include playtime, which is a great opportunity for socialization. Inevitably…there’s someone who doesn’t want to share, or feels inclined to push. When this happens, I’ve watched a look of horror cross many a caregiver’s face. I say: Fear not! Storytime is a great place for your child to learn how to interact with other kids before they get to preschool or kinder. In playtime, we use these blunders as opportunities to reinforce developmentally-appropriate social skills, so don’t worry if your child makes a mistake. We’re all learning together!

Well, there you have it! You’re all set for your first storytime. Now, just find your local library, and drop by. You and your youngster will be happy that you did. We don’t shush these days, and we certainly won’t stop you from singing off-key.

Well… It Was A Nice Thought

I was a subject librarian at a university. I received an email from a professor who had recently retired from another school and moved to our city. He wanted to donate decades worth of books and journals to the library.

This sort of thing is often a LOT more trouble than it is worth since much of the material will be old, duplicate, or online, but some of the stuff he described sounded good, and frankly, he might be someone willing to donate money to the university in the future if we built a relationship. Also, he understood and didn’t mind that much of the material would end up being discarded, so it seemed like it would be worth the trouble of a few months of sorting through the material.

Being a cautious soul, I checked all of this with the collection management librarian, the dean, and probably half a dozen others. Everyone agreed that it seemed like a reasonable decision and gave me the go-ahead.

I contacted the professor.

Me: “I have the approval to accept the gift. Where are the materials?”

Professor: “In my old house in [State halfway across the country].”

None of us had thought to ask that. The library had to pay for shipping.

Their Observation Skills Are Under Renovation

I work for a public library. My branch is closed to the public for a few weeks for renovations. We have announced this for weeks on our website, on social media, through local newspapers and news channels, and on signs on every conceivable surface inside and outside the library itself, basically doing everything short of a giant neon sign and screaming the closing dates on the hour like church bells.

We can’t completely shut the building down, though, because the construction crews need to get in, and we have a skeleton crew of library staff taking care of tasks like manning the phones, the book dropoff, and deliveries. No members of the public are allowed in, but we can’t lock the building. I’m sure you can see where this is going.

On the very first day of renovation, about twenty minutes into our work day, a patron came barging in, demanding assistance. They ignored not only every sign, the obvious construction crew and noise, and our empty bookshelves and boxed-up computers, but the fact that on a normal day, we would not even be open to the public for nearly an hour.

Our security guard, who was part of our skeleton crew for the renovation, hadn’t even arrived yet, since we anticipated we’d have to turn away oblivious patrons but naively thought it would be only during normal business hours.

To his credit, the patron left politely, but it’s going to be a long couple of weeks.

I went to Berkeley High, which was in the 1940’s already a school of over 3000. In the Bobby sox Regiments of the time, where peer group pressure demanded a crushing conformity of dress, speech, and behavior, being an intellectual, especially an intellectual girl, was a hard, humiliating task. You lived in disguise. You hid your brain in the closet. You tried your damndest to put your heart into squealing for Frankie Sinatra. You bought skirts and sweaters just like the BWOC wore. But you never fooled anybody. It was like going to Finland and pretending to be Finnish without being able to speak Finnish. It was hopeless. It was six hours a day of social failure and internal exile for three years. The one thing that redeemed it for me was the Berkeley Public Library, right around the corner.

Or maybe they did know?

Whatever they knew or didn’t, I bless their memory, and that of the beautiful building full of books, and my third-floor window-niche. And, though American society of the 1940’s was in many ways anti-intellectual, benighted, and rigidly oppressive, yet let me say this for it: The Public Libraries then were a public trust, a community responsibility. They were open every afternoon, six days a week, every week of the year, offering everybody liberty, learning, and the chance to make your soul.

Library Of Ruina is a Deck Building Turn-Based Strategy RPG Simulation Game developed and published by South Korean independent video game studio Project Moon. It was released on Steam Early Access on May 15, 2020. The game is a direct sequel to Lobotomy Corporation and as such reveals important plot points about the game’s main plot and ending.

The game’s story takes the form of a Visual Novel and follows directly from the ending of the previous game. Roland, a low-grade Fixer from a location known only as the City, one day finds himself transported into the foyer of the titular Library, a mysterious location filled with books on any subject one could think of. He soon finds himself in the company of the Head Librarian Angela, and after a brief scuffle, she decides to spare him and recruits him to be her guide on the outside world. Angela has a strange way of going about it though, as she sends out calling cards called Invitations to ask people to come to the Library and gives them a choice in whether they accept or decline. If the guests accept, they must survive mortal combat against the Librarians that guard the building; if they win, they can take any book they want. If they lose, they will become a book themselves. All of this is in service to Angela’s true goal — gaining the one «perfect» book that can make her into a human.

As Roland and Angela fight to add more and more books to the Library’s shelves, a winding plot unfolds that explores multiple parts of the City and its people. From the lowly gang members and various psychos that prowl the streets, to the Fixers of varying strengths and moralities, all the way to the highest echelons of society, the Library picks a fight with stronger and stronger forces as it rises from a mere backalley rumor to the City’s top position of infamy. All the while, a war brews over the land occupied by the Library, and a figure known as The Blue Reverberation puts into motion a strange plot that will shake the City, and its people, to their very core.

The game’s battle system takes the form of a Turn-Based duel with your team of Librarians against the invading Guests. At the beginning of each turn, both teams roll Speed Dice, which determines the order of attack — characters with more than one Speed Dice can take as many actions as they have Speed Dice. The Librarians and Guests then pick and choose combat cards called «Pages», apply them to their respective Speed Dice, and then both teams engage in combat with the Speed Dice determining the order in which combat plays out. Status Effects, special defensive cards and the Light cost of each card add depth to the combat system and incentivize the player to build a strong, cohesive deck for their Librarians to use.

An additional layer of depth lies within the Emotion Point system. As the Librarians and Guests clash with each other, they will generate a supply of Emotion Points which will raise the Emotion Level of their side. For the Librarians, their Light supply will be refilled and they will gain access to powerful buff cards called «Abnormality Pages», based off the Abnormality monsters from the previous game. Each floor of the Library has their own unique Abnormality Pages which center around a specific playstyle, such as the Floor of Technological Science’s Glass Cannon approach, or the Floor of Art’s Regenerating Health intricacies. For the Guests, higher Emotion Levels will cause them to drop more Books when defeated, which can be consumed after the battle to gain the Pages the Guests themselves used. All of this adds up to a game with lots of playstyles and viable approaches to battle, with hundreds of Pages to collect, plenty of Abnormality Pages to play with, and dozens upon dozens of potential decks to be built.

The game has been fully released as of August 2021. Later updates on PC also added an «Invitation Editor» allowing users to create their own custom battles for the game.

The game also has a novel tie-in, The Distortion Detective, which is set concurrently to the events of the game, but from the perspective of a Fixer outside of the Library. The series has been cancelled, but ProjectMoon has announced that they intend to develop a full-scale game based on the series following their next game’s release. In November 2021, ProjectMoon announced a comic taking place in the game’s setting, Leviathan. Since June 2022, said comic has since been adapted into an illustrated webnovel due to management issues and concerns over the artist’s health.

The Regulators Film Adaptation

Deadline reports the The Regulators Will be adapted into a movie by Bohemia Group.

Bohemia Group has optioned film rights to Stephen King’s bestseller The Regulators, tapping George Cowan to adapt the Western horror-thriller for the big screen.

The film adaptation of The Regulators is being shepherded by Bohemia Group’s Executive Vice-President, producer Justin Ross, who helped develop the King-approved script with Cowan.

“I’m delighted that the excitement of ‘The Regulators’ is coming to the screen,” King told Deadline. “This is going to be good.”

“We could not be more thrilled than to be working with the prolific Stephen King and his team on this project,” said Bohemia Group’s CEO, Susan Ferris. “The novel’s themes and characters resonate so powerfully, and we are looking forward to making an incredible film.”

The library story

My thinking about this story has developed, and my research has continued, since I wrote these pages. I have corrected and expanded upon them in Tar for Mortar: «The Library of Babel» and the Dream of Totality, available open access from punctum books.

The first paragraph of Borges’ “The Library of Babel” offers a minute description of the universe he has doomed his librarians to inhabit. Which is why I was shocked to reread the story recently and discover my mental image was completely wrong. He describes a vast architecture of interconnecting hexagons each with four walls of bookshelves and passageways leading to other identical hexagons. I had made the assumption that six walls minus four walls of book shelves equals two such passageways. I read to my astonishment:

The arrangement of the galleries is always the same: Twenty bookshelves, five to each side, line four of the hexagon’s six sides; the height of the bookshelves, floor to ceiling, is hardly greater than the height of a normal librarian. One of the hexagon’s free sides opens onto a narrow sort of vestibule, which in turn opens onto another gallery, identical to the first-identical in fact to all.

I found an answer in Antonio Toca Fernandez’ “La Biblioteca de Babel: Una Modesta Propuesta”, to which I am greatly indebted. The first version of Borges’ “La Biblioteca de Babel”, published in 1941, contained the same description, excepting two words: each hexagon contained 25 bookshelves, five each covering five walls. In 1956 Borges changed the text, presumably because he had recognized his error.

This is the trickiest part: he changed twenty-five to twenty, changed “each of the walls less one” to “each of the walls less two,” but left only a single opening to an adjacent hexagon. Such an edit is incomprehensible unless Borges intended to open the fifth wall as another passage allowing for the interminable continuity of his labyrinth. It’s almost as difficult to imagine the author recognizing two of his errors in this short phrase while creating a third. That must be the case, unless he had decided to create a labyrinth in which only his most careful readers would become lost, consisting of an impossible yoking of inconsistent architectures and irreconcilable texts.

If we accept the reading that each hexagon has two connections to adjacent chambers, this still leaves a great diversity of possible organizations. The easiest assumption to make is that each hexagon has its passages on two opposing walls, creating a continuous pathway. This structure presents a problem, however (see adjacent).

These paths would persist as such to infinity, without the librarians of one corridor ever being able to cross the minuscule distance separating them from the adjacent throughways. They might be separated by no more than a bookshelf throughout their lifetime from others they could never reach. Borges does say, however, that the hexagons are tiered, with each level connected by vertiginous spiral staircases. If the passages above or below had a slightly transposed arrangement (see adjacent), then the parallel corridors could be accessed by going up one flight of stairs, passing to an adjacent hexagon, and descending again.

Would it be possible for all the hexagons on a single floor to be connected? This would require a more complex design. Imagine a path radiating from a “central” chamber (in the library, as in the infinite sphere, the “exact center is any hexagon” and the “circumference is unattainable”). Such a path quickly encounters a problem (see adjacent).

If we believe, as does our narrator-librarian, in the infinity of the library, there must be at all times two open paths, two “liberties,” as Go players would call them (see adjacent). Two paths emerge from the “central” chamber (there are only ever relative centers in such a structure), and reunite at infinity, which is another way of saying they never meet. If one of these paths simply came to an end, reaching a hexagon with no hexagons beyond it, that hexagon would have only one entrance, breaking the symmetry established by Borges.

A strange realization lurks in this design: if we extend its spiral by a few more involutions, it would become, within the limits of our frame of reference, indistinguishable from the design with which we started. Those paths which seemed to stretch out to infinity, lonely and isolated, could actually have been switchbacks, connected at great distances. This structure is reminiscent of Richard Feynman’s metaphoric description of antimatter: “It is as though a bombardier flying low over a road suddenly sees three roads and it is only when two of them come together and disappear again that he realizes that he has simply passed over a long switchback in a single road.” There’s no difference, at the extreme reaches of an infinite structure like the one we are imagining, between the seemingly fragmented structure with which we began and the seemingly unified one we have reached. A finite creature could at most only believe that the interminable corridors met at infinity, without ever reaching that point.

All of this invokes one of Borges’ favorite themes, the line and the circle as they relate to the infinity or finitude of existence. At the end of Borges’ “The Death and the Compass” (“La Muerte y La BrГєjula”), the trapped protagonist longs only for a simpler labyrinth: «There are three lines too many in your labyrinth…I know of a Greek labyrinth that is but one straight line.” And his captor replies: “The next time I kill you…I promise you the labyrinth that consists of a single straight line that is indivisible and endless.”

We too could imagine a simpler labyrinth, a single string of hexagons too long for any mortal to traverse, without the capacious pits that grant a view on infinity and the knowledge of other paths. Anyone with the misfortune to find themselves inside such a space would never know if she walked an infinite line or a circle, if the ends of her path met or not. An infinite circle, Borges points out in another tale (“Ibn-Hakam al Bokhari, Murdered in His Labyrinth”), would be, for finite eyes, indistinguishable from a line (were its circumference visible at all). “…They had arrived at the labyrinth. Seen at close range, it looked like a straight, virtually interminable wall…Dunraven said it made a circle; but one so broad its curvature was imperceptible.”

These lines immediately follow the complaint of his companion:

‘Mysteries ought to be simple. Remember Poe’s Purloined letter, remember Zangwill’s locked room.’

‘Or complex,’ replied Dunraven. ‘Remember the universe.’

Exposing the Criminal Scene – The Body in the Library

This week we’re studying the “Exposing the Criminal” scene in the Crime Story The Body in the Library by Agatha Christie. The Core Event is presented as a classic “Gathering Summation” scene and appears in chapter 18, the final chapter of the book.

We’re focusing on scenes this season because scenes are the basic building blocks of story. To be able to write a story that works, you must be able to write a scene that works. And we’re using stories that already appear somewhere in the Story Grid Universe. The story we’re discussing is featured this year in the Story Grid Guild.

GENRE AND THREE-ACT SUMMARY

The is a Global Crime story (Cozy Mystery), and here’s a brief overview of the three-act summary.

What function does this scene serve in the story? Editor’s Scene Type

Core event of the Crime Story. Exposing the Criminal. This is the climax of the ending payoff, but the scene also includes the resolution, in which we learn whether the criminal is brought to justice or not.

Pretty self-explanatory … the detective, in this case, an amateur detective because it’s a cozy mystery, reveals the identity of the criminal. It may include how they figured it out. Loose strings are tied up.

What kind of scene is this?

“I’ve gathered you all here …”

A scene that brings interested parties together to provide the answer to the puzzle. We might also say this is a scene in which Marple is showing her work.

Other similar scenes include the reading of a will or announcing the winner of a contest.

What does this scene type accomplish within the context of the novel as a whole?

A feature of many cozy mysteries, but particularly stories by Agatha Christie, the exposing the criminal/bringing them to justice includes this explanation. We’re not privy to Jane Marple’s thoughts throughout the story. There are clues about what she’s thinking, but we can’t read her mind, and she’s not saying.

Nice feature: The characters in the room can ask questions the reader would want to ask if they were present.

How many people are in the scene?

Eight onstage, at least twenty offstage

Where does the scene take place (location)?

Majestic Hotel – interesting that we don’t know what room they’re in. In fact the story overall is really thin on setting. She’d had published thirty plus books at this point in her career. The locations are ones that are pretty typical of cozy mysteries, coastal resort hotel, village squire’s hall.

What is the power dynamic at play in this scene?

Miss Jane Marple holds the power. She possesses knowledge that everyone else in the room wants to know. She has their full attention.

Separately, Conway Jefferson has a fortune to dispose of, now that his intended recipient is dead.

What is the point of conflict, and how does that relate to the characters’ objects of desire?

On the surface, the other main characters in the scene (Sir Henry Clithering, Superintendent Harper, Colonel Melchett, and Conway Jefferson) want to know how Marple solved the crime, what was her first clue, and what her methods are. Beneath the surface, they want to be reassured that the solution to the puzzle makes sense, the criminal(s) has been dealt with, and justice has been restored.

Miss Jane Marple wants acknowledgement and appreciation for her skills and methods, which are not typically praised in law enforcement circles. Jefferson wants to see his fortune do some good for a young person.

Story Grid Scene Analysis Question

1. The Action Story Component: What are the characters literally doing—that is, what are their micro on-the-surface actions?

Jane Marple is showing her work while revealing whodunit, how and why, while investigators listen intently.

2. The Worldview Story Component: What is the essential tactic of the characters—that is, what above-the-surface macro behaviors are they employing that are linked to a universal human value?

Marple wants acknowledgement and appreciation. The others want to know that justice has been done.

3. The Heroic Journey 2.0 Component: What beyond-the-surface universal human values have changed for one or more characters in the scene? Which one of those value changes is most important and should be included in the Story Grid Spreadsheet?

At the beginning of the scene, everyone (except the reader) knows who the culprit is, but not why or how. Marple explains all, so they go from Unaware to Aware.

But this is a Crime Story, so we’re interested in the spectrum of Injustice to Justice. It’s the core event, so it must turn on the global value. So where is that happening in this scene? A clue about this is revealed in the 5Cs, so in the spirit of mystery, we’ll circle back to this in a few moments.

4. The Scene Event Synthesis: What Story Event sums up the scene’s on-the-surface actions, essential above-the-surface worldview behavioral tactics, and beyond-the-surface value change? We will enter that event in the Story Grid Spreadsheet.

Investigators and Jefferson learn as Marple reveals that Josie and Mark conspired to kill Pamela and Ruby and explains how they accomplished their crimes, but also how Marple herself solved the crime.

Story Grid Five Commandment Analysis

Inciting Incident: After successfully catching the killer in the act of attempting to murder Conway Jefferson, the team comes together to hear how Marple solved the crime. Will it make sense? How can they gain the most Justice?

Crisis: Does Conway disinherit Adelaide for moving on with her life?

Climax: No, he’s giving 10K to Adelaide and the rest is for her son Peter.

WHAT’S SPECIAL ABOUT THIS SCENE?

Obviously we want to know who committed the crime. But with stories like those written by Agatha Christie, the reader (and the other characters) want to know how Miss Marple or Hercule Poirot figured it out.

Working Scene or Exposition: I can see why Leslie analyzed the scene the way she did, however, when I first read it I considered it a piece of exposition and not a working scene. That said, I think it’s a necessary piece of exposition because it describes who committed the crime and how Jane Marple figured out whodunnit. As the last chapter in the book that ties up all the loose threads and answers the readers’ questions, it works within the context of the novel.

Jefferson may have had a crisis – off page and in past, here resolution of the crisis – so not dramatic. Does it matter?

The change that happens in the scene, other than ignorance to knowledge, is that Conway realizes he was being silly in attaching himself to Ruby, and that he should have looked closer to home. Now that might not be my worldview or yours, but it is the worldview expressed by the story and was typical of that time and place.

Jane Marple, is a close observer of human behavior. She shares quaint stories about her maid, the people in town, and who’s doing what with whom. The Crime is the backdrop for us to talk about how we behave toward one another, a shocking event to get us to look at our behavior and get aligned with what’s right.

Shawn’s recent explanation about what a crime story is about: It’s to answer the question: How do we not destroy one another?

Let’s say you don’t want to write a crime story. Why should you read a story like this? Because it’s a great way to study how to set up your Core Event. If you reread knowing the result, you can pick up on the way Christie planted clues along the way. It’s a bit cheesy and quaint, but Christie shows us how to lay the ground work for the Core Event without cheating.

Every Library Has a Story to Tell

Three new books for bibliophiles dig into the hidden human side of book collections.

A library is, at its most essential, a space that holds a collection of books. A dedicated room or building is not technically necessary. In his Book of Book Lists, recently released in the United States, author Alex Johnson offers examples of portable libraries—“sturdy wooden cases” of books and magazines that “were passed between lighthouses around the United States,” for instance. He includes the library Robert Falcon Scott took on board the Discovery in 1901, when the ship left for Antarctica, with a catalogue that specified which cabin a volume could be found in. Napoleon, he writes, had a traveling collection of French classics that was ported with him to war. It included five volumes of Voltaire’s plays and Montesquieu’s work on the Causes of the Greatness of the Romans and Their Decline.

But whatever form a library takes, someone had to have chosen the books in it, which reveal the secrets of heart and mind—their cares, their greeds, their enthusiasms, their obsessions.

Libraries, writes Stuart Kells, a historian of the book trade, are “human places … full of stories.” Kells’s new book, The Library: A Catalogue of Wonders, offers a history that begins before the written word and follows the development of book collections through the digital age. At times, he takes a lofty view. “What exactly are libraries for?” he asks, after touching on the Library of Alexandria, medieval monasteries, erotic collections, the Vatican’s closed stacks, private collections, and university libraries, along with writers’ libraries, library fauna, and other curiosities. He takes a few stabs the answer. “Libraries are an attempt to impose order in a world of chaos,” he writes. “They are places of redemption.”

One of the institutions he features, the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C., provides a more concrete example of some of the many things a library can be. This one, at least, can be seen as a research center, a work of art in its own right, a mausoleum, or a bomb shelter. Starting in 1889, Henry Clay Folger, who made his fortune in the oil business, started buying up early Shakespeare folios until he had amassed one of the world’s most valuable collections of the bard’s work. But when scholars asked permission to study one of his prized possessions, he had to tell them it was impossible to know which bank vault he’d stashed it in.

Before his death, Folger built a proper library to house the collection, and architecture critics marveled. The ashes of Folger and his wife, Emily, are interred in the building, and underneath is a network of tunnels that, according to Kells, the staff planned to use for shelter during the Cold War. Today, it’s not only possible to study the folios Folger collected, but to compare them side by side. The library is a monument to both to Shakespeare and the man driven to collect his works.

But if Kells wants to show that libraries are human places, he has also chosen stories that reveal their venal side. His librarians can be thieves, hoarders, or shameful caretakers. Even when they love books, they can’t be trusted with them. In its ideal form, a library protects books, celebrates them, and also makes them available to a wide group of readers. In this history, any single library rarely achieves all of these goals at once. Kells tells of libraries where valuable old manuscripts are left in piles on the floor, and others that exchange old treasures for new editions. Some libraries have ornate spaces that honor the idea of books but have very little on their shelves. Other libraries and book lovers have built amazing collections but zealously keep them from outsiders. What use is a library if no one is around to read its books?

In Packing My Library, Alberto Manguel faces down that question. At his home in France, Manguel kept 35,000 books in a tower library attached to a 15th-century barn and surrounded by a walled garden. Though he says he has only a few books that a serious bibliophile would find worthy, Manguel’s collection is as large as the best private libraries mentioned in Kells’s book and includes an illuminated Bible, a Spanish inquisitor’s manual, and rare first editions. For reasons never entirely explained, Manguel and his partner have to leave France, and the books in the library go into boxes. He laments its deconstruction.

Manguel’s is a personal history, and it is carefully curated. Like Kells, he offers digressions, because, he writes, when he was in the library he became “distracted by questions that are alien to my purpose.” That’s part of the charm of a library—it “orders the joyful chaos of the world”—and Manguel is a charming person to explore this chaos with. His world has an air of gentility; even as he insists his library isn’t so impressive, he mentions “the copy of Kipling’s Stalky & Co. that Borges had read in his adolescence in Switzerland and which he gave to me as a parting gift when I left for Europe in 1969.” Yes, he is talking about Jorge Luis Borges, whom he met as a young man. “I used to meet Borges after school, and walk him back to his flat, where I would read for him stories by Kipling, Henry James, Stevenson,” Manguel writes. He eventually took Borges’s old job as Director of the National Library in Buenos Aires.

The title of Manguel’s book comes from philosopher Walter Benjamin’s essay “Unpacking My Library,” which was written at a disorderly moment in his life. Benjamin and his wife had split up, and at close to 40 years old he was living alone for the first time. His books had been packed away for two years. As he unboxes them, he finds himself caught in “the spring tide of memories,” which reveals to him moments of his past. For Manguel, a library has a similar purpose. “I’ve often felt that my library explained who I was,” he writes.

In Benjamin’s view, a real library is always “somewhat impenetrable and at the same time uniquely itself,” as intriguing, loved, and yet unknowable as a close friend. Borges, in his famous story “The Library of Babel,” imagined a library that could hold every possible book, which the narrator calls, simply, “the universe.” The endless rooms of books drive the librarians wandering inside them to question the nature of knowledge and existence, and because the Library is infinite it is a place of possibilities. Though there is an order to it, it’s impossible for any one person to comprehend.

Similarly, any good library is too large for its owner to experience whole in a lifetime. Manguel’s book is about mortality. He is getting older, and his library may never be unpacked. If a collection is boxed away, it’s impossible for people to have relationships with the books, the act that endows them with meaning. But an imagined library has a life of its own. Manguel quotes his Latin teacher when he writes, “We must be grateful that we don’t know what the great books were that perished in Alexandria, because if we knew what they were we’d be inconsolable.” The memories of a library can be almost as powerful as the real thing. As Borges understood, imagining the true, unknowable depths of libraries’ secrets is the key to their attraction.

History of The New York Public Library

Origins

Samuel J. Tilden The origins of this remarkable institution date back to the time when New York was emerging as one of the world’s most important cities. By the second half of the 19th century, New York had already surpassed Paris in population and was quickly catching up with London, then the world’s most populous city. Fortunately, this burgeoning and somewhat brash metropolis counted among its citizens men who foresaw that if New York was indeed to become one of the world’s great centers of urban culture, it must also have a great library.

James Lenox New York’s other principal library during this time was founded by James Lenox and consisted primarily of his personal collection of rare books (which included the first Gutenberg Bible to come to the New World), manuscripts, and Americana. Located on the site of the present Frick Collection, the Lenox Library was intended primarily for bibliophiles and scholars. While use was free of charge, tickets of admission were required.

By 1892, both the Astor and Lenox libraries were experiencing financial difficulties. The combination of dwindling endowments and expanding collections had compelled their trustees to reconsider their mission. At this juncture, John Bigelow, a New York attorney and Tilden trustee, devised a bold plan whereby the resources of the Astor and Lenox libraries and the Tilden Trust would be combined to form a new entity, to be known as The New York Public Library, Astor, Lenox and Tilden Foundations. Bigelow’s plan, signed and agreed upon on May 23, 1895, was hailed as an unprecedented example of private philanthropy for the public good.

Building an Architectural Masterpiece

Exterior marble work, southwest corner (1906) The site chosen for the home of the new Public Library was the Croton Reservoir, a popular strolling place that occupied a two-block section of Fifth Avenue between 40th and 42nd Streets. Dr. John Shaw Billings, one of the most brilliant librarians of his day, was named director.

Billings knew exactly what he wanted. His design, briefly sketched on a scrap of paper, became the early blueprint for the majestic structure that has become the landmark building, known for the lions without and the learning within. Billings’s plan called for an enormous reading room topping seven floors of stacks and the most rapid delivery system in the world to get the Library’s resources as swiftly as possible into the hands of those who requested them.

Library (1911) Following an open competition among scores of the city’s most prominent architects, the relatively unknown firm of Carrère and Hastings was selected to design and construct the new library. The result, regarded as the apogee of Beaux-Arts design, was the largest marble structure ever attempted in the United States. Before construction could begin, however, some 500 workers had to spend two years dismantling the reservoir and preparing the site. The cornerstone was finally laid in May 1902.

More than one million books were set in place for the official dedication of the Library on May 23, 1911—some 16 years to the day since the historic agreement creating the Astor, Lenox, and Tilden Foundations had been signed. The ceremony was presided over by President William Howard Taft and was attended by Governor John Alden Dix and Mayor William J. Gaynor.

The following morning, New York’s very public Public Library officially opened its doors. The response was overwhelming. Between 30,000 and 50,000 visitors streamed through the building the first day it was open. One of the very first items called for was N. I. Grot’s Nravstvennye idealy nashego vremeni (Ethical Ideas of Our Time), a study of Friedrich Nietzsche and Leo Tolstoi. The reader filed his slip at 9:08 a.m. and received his book six minutes later!

Creating the Neighborhood Libraries

Later that year The New York Public Library contracted with the City of New York to operate 39 Carnegie branches in the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island (Brooklyn and Queens had founded separate library systems before the consolidation of the city; the Brooklyn Public Library and Queens Library remain separate entities). Thus, from the earliest days of The New York Public Library, a tradition of partnership with the city and outreach to the community was established, and continues to this day.

Almost overnight, The New York Public Library became a vital part of the intellectual fabric of American life. Among its earliest beneficiaries were recently arrived immigrants, for whom the Library provided contact with the literature and history of their new country as well as the heritage that these people brought with them.

The New York Public Library Today

Today the Library’s 92 locations include four research centers — focusing on the humanities and social sciences, the performing arts, black history and culture, and business and industry — and a network of neighborhood libraries throughout the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island. Throughout the system, the Library provides free and open access to its physical and electronic collections and information, as well as to its services for people of all ages, from toddlers to teens and adults. Research and circulating collections combined total more than 51 million items, among them materials for the visually impaired. In addition, each year the Library presents thousands of exhibitions and public programs, including classes in technology, literacy, researching, and English for Speakers of Other Languages. The Library serves some 18 million patrons who come through its doors annually; in addition, the Library’s website receives 32 million visits annually from more than 200 countries.

Wiser Than a God

In 1884, two years after her husband’s death from malaria, Kate Chopin moved back to her native St. Louis. She was thirty-four years old and a mother of six children ranging in age from 4 to 13. After a short-lived attempt to live in the home of her mother and her mother’s sister, also widows, she and the children moved into a house across the street. Chopin had lived in Louisiana with her husband for fourteen years, first in New Orleans, and then two hundred miles to the northwest in the rural town of Cloutierville, where she became somewhat notorious for her horseback riding, card playing, Cuban cigarettes, extravagant dresses purchased in the city, and—after her husband died—a romance with a married man.

Chopin had been living in St. Louis for barely more than a year when her mother died of cancer at the age of 54. “I think the tragic death of her father early in her life, of her much-loved brothers, the loss of her young husband and her mother, left a stamp of sadness on her which was never lost,” Kate’s youngest child (and only daughter), Lelia, wrote two decades later. Chopin moved her family four miles across town after her mother’s death, in part, according to biographer Emily Toth, to get away from the supervision of her aunt, “who would surely notice that Kate had stopped going to mass.”

In her new neighborhood, Chopin reconnected with friends from her childhood years, as well as an expanded circle of freethinkers, artists, and journalists, including Joseph Pulitzer, whose newspaper would publish some of her stories. “She was not interested in the woman’s suffrage movement,” her youngest son, Felix, recalled in 1949. “But she belonged to a liberal, almost pink-red group of intellectuals, people who believed in intellectual freedom and often expressed their independence by wearing eccentric clothing.”

The physician Frederick Kolbenheyer, who had befriended Chopin a decade earlier, was one member of her new social circle. The previous decade, he had been the attending obstetrician for two of Kate’s children, each born in St. Louis when she had returned to spend time with her mother. A scion of an aristocratic family in Austria, Kolbenheyer had rebelled against his father and had come to the United States because of his outspoken opposition to the Hapsburg monarchy—or, more precisely, because he had been strongly advised to leave his native country. He served as physician to many of the leading families of St. Louis, but his primary practice was among the poorer inhabitants in the city’s South Side. Chopin and Kolbenheyer corresponded frequently during her years in Louisiana, and the letters she wrote impressed the doctor so much that, after she moved back to St. Louis, he urged her to become a writer.

Chopin began by attempting a novella-length story, “Euphrasie,” which she would eventually condense from 30,000 to 10,000 words and retitle “A No-Account Creole.” That initial effort would not be finished for several years; instead her first publication, which appeared in 1888, was the sheet music for an original composition, “Lilia, Polka for Piano.” In January 1889, she placed a poem, “If It Might Be,” in America, a progressive Chicago-based journal. And, finally, in June of that year, she finished the first of nearly eighty stories accepted for publication during the next thirteen years.

A romantic comedy that defies the formula, “Wiser Than a God” is, in part, Kate Chopin’s evocation of her grief over her mother’s death—and probably her response to the gentleman callers who might have assumed she was eager to get married again. In addition, it was almost certainly inspired by the career of German opera singer Antoinette Fehringer, whom Kate had met when she was nineteen years old. In 1866 Fehringer arrived in New Orleans from the Victoria Theater in Berlin and guest-starred in several productions during the first two seasons of the just-built National Theatre. She also proved to be a talented concert pianist and claimed to have been taught by the composer Franz Liszt. In July 1868, she retired from her professional stage career and married Adolph Bader, one of the city’s wealthier residents—a match (according to the Daily Democrat) “made romantic by a duel with a supposed rival.” The following spring Kate, with her mother, a younger cousin, and three other women, went on a pleasure trip to New Orleans, where she met the Baders. She later wrote in her diary:

“Wiser Than a God” was published in the Philadelphia Musical Journal in December 1889, twenty years after her meeting with Antoinette Fehringer. Like many of Chopin’s stories, it deals with the tensions between family and independence and between marriage and career. “Kate Chopin was not an activist,” concludes Emily Toth, “but her earliest stories were about women who created their own destinies.”
