В наше бурное время, такого столь сказочного, но без каскадов прыжков, нырков и комичных ужимок уже не увидеть, и столь лиричное, но без накрахмаленной до хруста романтичности – давно не сыскать!

Впрочем, подобное совсем не удивительно – сюжет обрабатывал, модернизировал, и одушевлял сам Миядзаки-старший, перо не дрожало в руке мастера, и режиссер-постановщик «Ариэти», Хиромаса Енебаяси, борозды проложенной знаменитым маэстро не портил.

Вероятно, если бы «Ариэте» была анимирована компанией Диснея, Dream Works, или иной другой студией соответствующего размаха, то и конечный результат был бы явно иным, если даже не диаметрально противоположенным.

Сама Ариэти – далеко не барби, которая нуждается в непрестанном спасении «прекрасным принцем», не фетиш отважных принцесс и потенциальных волшебниц, но обаятельная пацанка с первыми симптомами пробуждающейся женственности, больше похожая характером на осторожного отца, чем на сорвиголову, уставшую от родительской опеки.

Усмотреть в сюжете «Ариэте» скрытый, экологический посыл не возбраняется. Так будьте аккуратными с тем, что нас окружает, быть может, ваша жизнь – для тех, кто поменьше и слабее может оказаться настоящим разгулом стихии. Однако мудрый Хайяо, на пару с Хиромасой (тем же финалом фильма, как он есть) слишком хорошо знают свое «сказочное дело», чтобы размениваться на эквилибристику всего одной скрытой моралью.

Ну что сказать, ожидал, конечно же, большего. Может быть, перегорел, не знаю, но претензии к фильму имеются.

— короткие, будто смятые сцены. Иногда казалось, продли мгновение еще секунд на пять — и этот кадр будет завершенным, цельным. Наверное, неопытность режиссера, не знаю. Но вообще-то не помешало бы добавить лишних 10—15 минут в повествование, а то мы фактически ничего не узнали, помимо того, что уже было понятно из трейлера. Та же плачущая Ариэтти в начале — так и не понял, что ее огорчило. То, что ее заметили? Не оправдала ожиданий? Или кубик сахара и первый неудачный поход? Или что-то глубже? Всего пара слов, брошенных мимоходом — и зритель мог бы лучше понять ее внутренний мир. Но нет, впопыхах — и к следующей части.

— незавершенный конец. Это не то, чтобы ужасная ошибка, но в той же «Наусике» или «Пяти сантиметрах» это смотрится логично и оставляет зрителя на эмоциональном пике, в катарсисе. Здесь же как бы говорится «ну вот и всё, дальше нам говорить не о чем. Пока», и никаких ощущений, кроме той же дымчатой неги, что сопровождала тебя весь просмотр, не испытываешь. В конце авторы, сами всё понимая, попытались выдавить из тебя восторг кадром «моря», которое мечтала увидеть мать Ариэтти, но так как это желание было для нее каким-то побочным, десятым или тридцатым в ее списке, да и особой симпатии к трусишке-мамаше не испытываешь, то это не берет и не волнует.

Сюда же относятся и все невыстрелившие ружья — начиная от кукольного домика, мамы и папы мальчика, и заканчивая шпилькой. Никаких моральных выводов тоже не следует, что странно для детского фильма. Типа как Ариэтти своим примером показала мальчику, что следует быть храбрым. Неубедительно.

— надуманность главного конфликта. Честно говоря, первый раз такое в фильмах Гибли, насколько я знаю. Здесь всегда ставились глобальные, глубинные вопросы, и у Ариэтти такой был — вырождение ее лилипутьего племени, но в фильме главной проблемой становится полусумасшедшая старушка, к которой непонятно даже, как относится. Лично я относился с жалостью и брезгливостью. Если в ее образе нам пытались подать идею о том, что «все люди — враги вороваек», то это стопроцентно не удалось. Нет больше такого человека в целом мире, я в этом уверен, кто стал бы поступать так же, как эта бабуля. У нее какой-то бзик или шиза.

В-общем, претензий еще много — и к сценарию, и к постановке. Лично я бы хотел развития идеи(замечательной идеи! ) в другом ключе, и перед просмотром главный вопрос у меня был — всё-таки она увеличится, или же он уменьшится? Рисунок красивый, даже очень, но его мало — пространство замкнутое, ничего, кроме интерьеров дома и полянки и не показать.

+ В плюсы, конечно, отнесу атмосферу. Она есть, она прекрасна. Главная героиня — всё тот же Миядзаковский типаж и тихоня-мальчик с, разумеется, добрым сердцем — другого и не ждали. Другие герои все мельком-мельком, но характер каждого, в-принципе, понятен и раскрыт (даже кота и вороны). Понравилась мягкая робость первых шажков друг к другу мальчика и Ариэтти. Понравился внутренний уклад вороваек. Очень понравилось, как капает чай из чайника у мамы Ариэтти — всё-таки с физикой создатели дружат (где пылинки размером с ноготь Ариэтти, почему муравьи не прокусили ей руку, где один из главных естественных врагов вороваек — паук, почему она не прыгает, аки кузнечик, почему ее не разрывает изнутри и прочие физиологические, микрофизические вопросы — уже слишком для создателей детского фильма, да и никто не пойдет на такое хрумкать корн). Понравилась музыка — главная тема очень хрупкая, нежная, да и голосок у Сесиль чистый и трогательный.

В завершении должен сказать, что это не лучший фильм Гибли. Но и не такой провальный, как первый фильм Горо (наверное, потому, что над сценарием работал и Хаяо). Меньше восьми поставить мышка не подвинется.

Ghibli announced the film in late 2009 with Yonebayashi making his directorial debut as the youngest director of a Ghibli film. Miyazaki supervised the production as a developing planner. The voice actors were approached in April 2010, and Cécile Corbel wrote the film’s score as well as its theme song.

A boy named Sho/Shawn tells the audience he still remembers the week in summer he spent at his mother’s childhood home with his maternal great aunt, Sadako/Jessica, and the housemaid, Haru/Hara. When Sho/Shawn arrives at the house on the first day, he sees a cat, Niya/Nina, trying to attack something in the bushes but it soon gives up after it is attacked by a crow. Sho/Shawn then discovers Arrietty, a Borrower, emerging from the bushes and returning to her home through an underground air vent. Later at night, Arrietty’s father, Pod, takes Arrietty on her first «borrowing» mission above the floorboards to show her how he «borrows» sugar and tissue. After obtaining a sugar cube from the kitchen, they walk within a wall to reach a beautifully intricate dollhouse (with working electric lights and kitchen utilities) in Sho/Shawn’s bedroom, to get a tissue. However, Arrietty is spotted by Sho/Shawn while retrieving a piece of tissue from a tissue box and loses the sugar cube. Sho/Shawn asks her not to leave and although Arrietty hesitates, she still leaves the room with her father.

The next day, Sho/Shawn leaves the dropped sugar cube beside the underground air vent where he first saw Arrietty. Pod warns Arrietty not to take it because their existence must be kept secret from humans, but his daughter nevertheless sneaks out to visit Sho/Shawn in his bedroom. She drops the sugar cube he left on the floor, letting him know that she is there. Without revealing herself otherwise, she tells Sho/Shawn to leave her family alone and that they do not need his help. On her return, Arrietty is intercepted by her father. Realizing they have been detected, Pod and his wife Homily decide that they must move out of the house. Sho/Shawn learns from Sadako/Jessica that some of his ancestors had seen Borrowers in the house and had the dollhouse custom-built in the hopes that Borrowers would use it. However, the Borrowers had not been seen since, and the dollhouse stayed in Sho/Shawn’s room.

Pod returns injured from a borrowing mission and is helped home by Spiller, a Borrower boy he met on the way. He informs them that there are other places the Borrowers could move to. While Pod is recovering, Sho/Shawn removes the floorboard concealing the Borrower household and replaces their kitchen with the kitchen from the dollhouse, in hopes the Borrowers would be more accepting of his knowledge of their existence. However, the Borrowers are frightened by this and instead speed up their moving process.

After Pod recovers, he goes to explore some of the places Spiller has suggested. Arrietty goes to bid farewell to Sho/Shawn, but he suggests to her that the Borrowers are becoming extinct in the course of the conversation. Realizing that he has upset his small friend, Sho/Shawn reveals he has had a heart condition since birth and will have an operation in a few days. The operation does not have a good chance of success. He believes that there is nothing he can do about it, saying that eventually, every living thing dies. Arrietty convinces Sho/Shawn that he will fight for the life he has now nevertheless.

Meanwhile, Haru/Hara notices the floorboards have been disturbed. Sadako/Jessica is out, and Sho/Shawn is still in the garden speaking with Arrietty. Haru/Hara unearths the Borrowers’ house and captures Homily. Alerted by her mother’s screams, Arrietty leaves Sho/Shawn in the garden and goes to investigate. Saddened by her departure, Sho/Shawn returns to his room. Haru/Hara locks him in and calls a pest removal company to capture the other Borrowers alive. With the help of Sho/Shawn, Arrietty rescues Homily. Sadako returns soon after the pest removal company’s arrival and sends them away. Haru/Hara and Sadako/Jessica discover that the Borrowers have left and that Sho/Shawn has destroyed any trace of their presence.

The Borrowers stop for dinner during their move, and Sho/Shawn’s cat, Niya/Nina, spots Arrietty. Niya/Nina leads Sho/Shawn to Arrietty. He gives her a sugar cube and tells her the Borrowers’ fight for survival has given him hope to live through the operation. Arrietty gives Sho/Shawn her hair clip as a token of remembrance, and they go their separate ways. (The Disney dubbed version contains a final monolog, where Sho/Shawn states he returned to the home a year later in the next summer, indicating that the operation had been successful. He is happy to hear rumors of objects disappearing in his neighbors’ homes.) Arrietty, Pod, and Homily leave in a teapot with Spiller. Spiller comforts Arrietty by giving her a red berry after she joins him on the teapot’s top.

On December 16, 2009, Studio Ghibli announced Karigurashi no Arrietty as their film for next year. This film is based on the novel The Borrowers by the British writer Mary Norton. The novel won the Carnegie Medal for children’s literature in 1953 and had already been adapted into two films and a TV series at the time. Studio Ghibli founders Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki had been contemplating an adaptation of this novel for around 40 years.

The director of the film was announced as the animator Hiromasa Yonebayashi on the same day. Hiromasa Yonebayashi was one of the animators for the Studio Ghibli films Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, and Spirited Away. He was also the reserve director for the film Tales from Earthsea. Miyazaki was announced as the production planner for the film.

Casting

The Japanese voice cast of the film was announced on April 13, 2010. Actress Mirai Shida was cast as the voice of Arrietty. Arrietty was Shida’s first voice acting role. In addition, Ryunosuke Kamiki, who has voiced characters in other Studio Ghibli films like Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle, was cast as Shō. His most recent voice role was in the 2009 film Summer Wars. Kamiki said that he «was very happy to meet up with the staff» he previously knew when he worked on other Studio Ghibli films.

Besides them, the film’s cast includes Tomokazu Miura, Shinobu Otake, Keiko Takeshita, and Kirin Kiki. The four actors have previous voice acting experience, but none of them have been in a Studio Ghibli film before. Miura and Otake were respectively cast as Arrietty’s parents Pod and Homily. In addition, Takeshita voiced Sho’s aunt and Kiki voiced one of the helpers in the human family.

On January 8, 2011, actress and singer Bridgit Mendler was cast as Arrietty for the film’s North American release. Besides Mendler, the cast included Will Arnett, Amy Poehler, Carol Burnett, and David Henrie. The film had a different voice cast for Optimum’s United Kingdom release, making it the first Ghibli film to have different voice actors for each of its English-language releases. The cast included Saoirse Ronan, Tom Holland, Mark Strong, Olivia Colman, Phyllida Law, and Geraldine McEwan.

Release

Arrietty was first released in Japanese cinemas on July 17, 2010, by Japanese film distributor Toho. The film was officially released at a ceremony attended by the film’s cast and Yonebayashi. Corbel performed the film’s theme song at the event. In addition, Yonebayashi hinted that he wanted the film to beat the record of over 12 million audiences set by previous Studio Ghibli film, Ponyo. The film was screened in 447 theaters throughout Japan during its debut weekend.

In the United Kingdom, the film was released on July 29, 2011, by Optimum Releasing. The film was released in the United States on February 17, 2012, by Walt Disney Pictures, with the title The Secret World of Arrietty. The North American dub was directed by Gary Rydstrom produced by Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy and written by Karey Kirkpatrick.

A screening of the North American release was held on January 21, 2012, in New York City. The film opened in at least 1,522 screens during its general release, surpassing Ponyo’s roughly 900 screens to be the largest yet for a Ghibli production in the country.

Home media

Arrietty was released in both Blu-ray Disc and DVD formats within Japan. The DVD version of the film consists of two discs in the region 2 format. The Blu-ray version consists of a single disc in the Region A format. Both versions were released in Japan on June 17, 2011, and both contain English and Japanese subtitles.

StudioCanal (previously known as Optimum Releasing) released the movie on both region 2 DVD and region B Blu-Ray format in the United Kingdom on January 9, 2012. A DVD/Blu-Ray Double Play «Collector’s Edition» was also released, featuring art cards.

The film was released by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment as a Blu-ray and DVD combo on May 22, 2012, in North America.

Reception

Box Office

Arrietty debuted at the first position in the Japanese box office. More than one million people went to see the film during its opening weekend. It grossed around 1.35 billion yen that weekend. Distributor Toho announced that as of August 5, 2010, the film managed to gross more than 3.5 billion yen and attracted more than 3.7 million viewers. According to the Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan, Arrietty is the top-grossing Japanese film in their box office for the year for 2010; it grossed approximately 9.25 billion yen ($110.0 million).

In France, the film was well received by the public. More than 100,000 people went to catch the film on its debut week in France, allowing the film to gross more than US$1.4 million that week. Overall, ticket sales for Arrietty, le petit monde des chapardeurs in France totaled just shy of 740,000 between its release on January 12, 2011, and March 1, 2011. In the United Kingdom, the film generated £76,000 ($120,232) in its first weekend.

Critical Reception

Arrietty has received very positive reviews from film critics; Rotten Tomatoes sampled 120 reviews and judged 94% of them to be positive. Metacritic, which assigns a weighted average score, rated the film 80 out of 100 based on 27 reviews.

Cristoph Mark of The Daily Yomiuri praised the film, saying that the film is «likely a perennial favorite among children». He particularly liked the film effects, which he described as «Drops of water loom large and drip like syrup; the ticking of a clock reverberates through the floor and the theater’s speakers; tissue paper is large and stiff. «, adding that these effects give the audience «a glimpse into their own world, but from a different perspective». Mark Schilling of The Japan Times gave the film a rating of four out of five stars, and said that the film «speaks straight to the heart and imagination of [everyone].» Schilling also praised the film’s animation, saying that Studio Ghibli animators are past masters at creating the illusion of presence and depth without [3-D effects]. However, he also said that some scenes in the film «threatens to devolve into the sappy, the preachy, and the slapsticky» but noted that these scenes were «mercifully brief».

Steve Rose, the reviewer for The Guardian gave the film four out of five stars and praised the film, describing it as «a gentle and entrancing tale, deeper and richer than more instantly gratifying fare.» Rose also described the film as «the soul food of the animation world,» however, he did note that this film «doesn’t match previous hits such as Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke in terms of epic scale or adult appeal», even though it bears many of their hallmarks: bright, detailed animation. » Deborah Young of The Hollywood Reporter gave a positive review of the film. She said that the film «remains essentially a film for children». Young later went on to say that the relationship with Sho and Arrietty «touches the heartstrings with gentle yearning», and praised Yonebayashi for its direction. In the opening remarks made by David Gritten of The Telegraph, he said that the film was «ravishingly colorful and textured». He also praised the animation, saying that «animation doesn’t get better than Arrietty.» Gritten gave the film a rating of 4 stars out of 5 stars. In his review for Special Broadcasting Service, Don Groves gave a mixed review of the film and said that Arrietty was a «very slender, minor work.» Groves also criticized the film’s storyline, calling it «a gentle, humorless, uncomplicated tale of friendship in an alien environment.» However, he praised the voice acting as «generally is as professional as [one would] expect.» Groves gave the film a rating of 3.5 stars out of 5 stars.

Zac Bertschy of Anime News Network gave the North American version of Arrietty an overall grade of «B». Bertschy praised the voice acting in the film and also praised the intricate details of the film’s backgrounds, but said that «there isn’t more going on here, even when it comes to the film’s basic story», however, he later went on to say that it is «foolish to deny the simple, warm, and familiar pleasures of Arrietty’s world». Leslie Felperin of Variety praised the film as «old school, mostly in a good way.» She also praised the film for its animation, as well as Yonebayashi’s direction. Felperin noted, however, that the film lacked its «approach to storytelling that made Studio Ghibli’s other films so compelling.» Manohla Dargis of The New York Times praised the film for its hand-drawn animation and Yonebayashi’s direction. Dargis later went on to say that the film has «a way of taking the audience where they may not expect.»48 Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times described the film as «beautiful, gentle and pure». Turan also praised the detail and animation in the film, as well as its storyline. He also praised Karey Kirkpatrick and Gary Rydstrom for their adaptation of the film, as well as their casting decisions for the British and North American versions. Lisa Schwarzbaum, the reviewer for Entertainment Weekly, gave the film a «B+» and praised Arrietty for its animation. Schwarzbaum later went on to say that the result is a «dreamy, soft-edge hybrid, equally interested in observing raindrops and the worries of a race of minuscule beings the Borrowers.

Based on Mary Norton’s juvenile fantasy novel, The Borrowers, the film tells the story of Arrietty, a young Borrower who lives under the floorboards of a typical household. She eventually befriends Sho, a human boy with a heart condition, who is living with Sadako (Sho’s great aunt). Our House Below

Arrietty getting ready to leave for her first borrowing mission.

The story takes place in 2010 in Koganei, western Tokyo and like the novel revolves around a group of «tiny people» who are 10-cm tall and live under the floorboards of a typical human household.

A boy named Sho arrives at the house his mother lived in as a child, to stay with his great aunt Sadako. When Sho leaves the car, he sees a cat trying to attack something in the bushes, but the cat leaves after being attacked by a crow. Sho goes to see what the cat was trying to attack. He then sees a Borrower named Arrietty or thinks he does. Arriety runs back to basement before the cat gets her with some flowers and leaves for her mother. Her worried mother asks Arriety if she went outside again but is surprised that her room has become a forest. Arriety gives the leaves to her mother as an early birthday gift. Arriety is excited because tonight she going on her first borrowing with her father. When Pod returns and tells them there is a new being the house, Homily becomes hesitant to let her daughter go especially since children are wild, but Arriety wants to go as they promised that this would be her night. Pod lets her come since Sho is sick and tells Homily that Arriety is almost 14 and will be out on her own soon.

That night Arrietty’s father Pod takes Arrietty above the floorboards to show her how he gets sugar. Their first stop is the kitchen, then they walk within a wall to reach a dollhouse in Shawn’s bedroom, to get tissue. Before Arrietty and Pod can leave, Arrietty notices Sho is awake, and accidentally drops the sugar cube they got. Sho tells them not to be afraid of him.

The Doll House

Arriety spends her days with her family.

The next day, Sho leaves the dropped sugar cube beside an underground air vent where he first saw Arrietty, but Arrietty’s mother Homily is shocked when Arriety tells her she dropped the sugar, Pod warns them not to take it because their existence must be kept secret from humans. After doing laundry, Arriety sees the sugar being taken by the ants, she shoos them away and sees that Sho left a note, so he did see her. So, when her family is preoccupied, Arrietty sneaks out to visit Sho in his bedroom, and the two become friends. On her return, Arrietty is intercepted by her father. Pod and Homily realize they have been discovered, and decide the family must move out of the house.

Pod returns injured from a borrowing mission, helped by Spiller, a Borrower boy he met on the way. Spiller suggests some places the Borrowers can move to, and, after he recovers, Pod goes to check them out.

Sho forms an unlikely friendship with Arriety.

Sho learns from Sadako that his ancestors have seen Borrowers in this house, and they had the dollhouse made especially for the Borrowers, with working electric lights and ovens. However, the Borrowers had not been seen since, and the dollhouse was put in Shawn’s room. While Arrietty checks on her father, she asks why they have to move and he tells her that if a borrow is seen by a human, they will want to learn more about them. Pod then goes on to tell her that before she was born, this house had two other borrower families, the first one vanished without a trace and the second one moved out because they were seen by humans. This move is all based on the borrowers survival. Meanwhile, Sho uncovers the floorboards above the Borrower household, uproots their kitchen and replaces it with the kitchen from the dollhouse.

An Uneasy Feeling

Suddenly there is a scream coming from the kitchen. Homily is shocked to see that their kitchen is being pulled out and replaced with the dollhouse kitchen. Arriety and Pod break through and are amazed themselves. As they pack Pod tells them to take only what’s necessary and not to take any items from the dollhouse. Arrietty goes to say goodbye to Sho and tells him she is a borrower. During their subsequent conversation, Sho theorizes that the Borrowers are becoming extinct, which hurts Arrietty she tells him that Spiller knows that there are more borrowers out there and as long as they have each other to live for, they’ll continue to leave. Apologizing, Sho reveals he has had a heart condition since birth, and will have an operation in a few days. The operation does not have a good chance of success.

Disturbance

Hara unearths the Borrowers home.

Meanwhile, Hara, Sadako’s maid, notices the floorboards have been disturbed. While Sadako is out, Hara locks Sho in his room, unearths the Borrowers’ house and puts Homily in a jar in the kitchen. Hara calls a pest removal company to smoke out the Borrowers and bring them to her alive. When Arrietty returns to find Homily missing and their house disturbed, she goes to Sho for help. Arrietty helps Sho break out of his locked room, Sho then carries Arrietty to the kitchen and distracts Hara while Arrietty rescues Homily. Sadako returns soon after the pest removal company comes, and tells them to leave. Hara tries to prove to Sadako the Borrowers really exist, but Homily has escaped, and there is nothing below the floorboards: The Borrowers have already set off on their move, and Sho has destroyed the remains. Hara does nothing but throws a fit when she realizes her proof has escaped, trying to tell the pest control company that she is not crazy.

Goodbye My Friend

Arriety begins her journey to find her people. Sho says goodbye and is now at peace.

The Borrowers stop for dinner during their move and Shawn’s cat spots Arrietty where the cat brings Sho to Arrietty. He gives her a sugar cube as a parting gift, and tells her the Borrowers’ fight for survival has given him hope to live through the operation, which will happen in two days’ time. In return, Arrietty gives Sho her hairclip. The Borrowers then go into a teapot, which Spiller steers down a river.

There is a final monologue in the Disney dub, where Sho states that he never saw Arrietty again and returned to the home a year later, indicating that the operation had been successful. He is happy to hear rumors of objects disappearing in his neighbors’ homes. In the Japanese dub, there is no monologue and Sho stares in silent as the sun rises.

Development

The Japanese edition of The Borrowers. It was reissued to coincide with the film and sold extremely well, reaching the Oricon charts for the first time in two years. Around 125,000 copies were sold.

In early summer 2008, producer Toshio Suzuki and Hayao Miyazaki were at a standoff on what would be Studio Ghibli’s next film (They had just completed [[Ponyo]], which was scheduled for release on July 19, 2008). In the end, Toshio Suzuki ended up losing to his elder colleague: “At the time, I was planning another project and we discussed which one should be chosen several times. Many of us would not have backed down, but in the end, I had to give in to my elder brother and the project was adopted.»

This work they had chosen would be based on The Borrowers by the British writer Mary Norton. The novel won the Carnegie Medal in 1953, and had already been adapted into three English animated films. However, Miyazaki had already been planning to adapt the novel The Borrowers for much longer than that summer of 2008. In fact, he already had desires of adapting it nearly forty years ago, when he was twenty years old. “At that time, this project had already been taken into consideration by both Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata,” adds Suzuki. “Miya-san suddenly remembered this and recommended that I read the book. So why are you digging up The Borrowers today? To this question, Miya-san replied, “The situation of the karigurashi (Borrowers) is very pleasant. They just fit into our present day. Immediately after the decision to adapt this work, on July 30, 2008, Miyazaki wrote the note of intent relating to the film’s project in which he explained that the action took place, no longer in England in the 1950’s, but in the Japan of the 2000’s. According to French fan site Buta Connection, the story takes place in the vicinity of Koganei, city where the Studio Ghibli is located. He also specifies the purpose of the film: «to comfort and encourage people who live in this chaotic and worrying time.» » About the statement of intent, the producer Suzuki was keen to add:

“As you can see, the original title Miya-san intended was Chiisana Arietti (Little Arrietty), a brave change from the title of the original novel. I asked him why and he told me that he liked the sound of «Arietti» and that he had remembered it for a long time. He also used to tell me about «the life of the borrowers», but his title did not refer to it. When I pointed it out, he instantly changed his title to the current one of Karigurashi no Arietti («The Borrower Arrietty»). [1]

Hiromasa Yonebayashi is an extremely skilled and talented animator. Plus, since he started working on the production, I also came to know that he had enough talent as a director. On December 16, 2009, Studio Ghibli announced Karigurashi no Arrietty as their film for next year. The script was ready. Briefly written by Hayao Miyazaki, the latter then joined the collaboration of a co-writer, Keiko Niwa, who had already worked on Tales from Earthsea. The director of the film was announced as the animator Hiromasa Yonebayashi on the same day. Yonebayashi was one of the animators for the Studio Ghibli films Howl’s Moving Castle, [[Ponyo]], and Spirited Away. He was also the reserve director for the film Tales from Earthsea. Miyazaki was announced as the production planner for the film.

Toshio Suzuki confessed that Miyazaki wrote the screenplay without even re-reading the novel and he relied only on his memories. According to him, the director has a ‘good memory’ but he nevertheless often makes reading mistakes and reinterprets things or gives importance to negligible details. For example, if there is a lovely garden in the book, as there is in «The Borrowers», he will instantly love it. “He really loves gardens,” he explains. “And those who are abandoned have even more his favors. So much so that he first made a plan of the garden before embarking on Arrietty’s screenplay. Eastern and Western elements were combined when designing the mansion and gardens, with Seibi-en from Aomori Prefecture Hirakawa used as inspiration. [4]

For his part, at the same time, Hiromasa Yonebayashi had completely completed the e-konte based on the scenario of Miyazaki. One of his very first difficulties as a director was the development of this document, which then guides the entire production of the film. “It’s the first time I’ve drawn a storyboard,” he explains. “Even though I felt a bit lost, I started to draw, telling myself that I could always ask to be in control of my work. When I wanted to show it to Mr. Miyazaki, he replied that he did not want to. It scared me because if he had agreed to control it then, the film would have been even better.»

During the final interview between Miyazaki, Suzuki and the young director, preceding the start of production of the animation, Yonebayashi ultimately does not bring his work to the master because «it would have finally taken twice as long and, at the end of the day. in the end, that would only have impacted the production itself. In the end, it was a good thing to have had complete freedom.» Miyazaki does not upset and instead congratulated him for his firmness. According to Buta Connection, in total, Yonebayashi will have spent five months alone drawing 996 plans on his own.

As Suzuki explains, in Studio Ghibli films, everything is driven by this production document and everything depends on it. The e-konte was fully finalized before the start of the work on the animation, therefore, the production of Arrietty already contrasts radically with the previous productions directed by Miyazaki (particularly Ponyo, who prefers to work on a story of which he does not yet know the end.

“At Ghibli, we have two ways of making films,” Suzuki explains. “The first is that a director directs everything, the other is that the project takes precedence. In this case, it is a producer who is directing and the Arrietty project must prevail, especially since we can hardly recommend Miyazaki’s way of working to a beginning director.»

The release date is approaching day by day and the tension is more and more felt on the morale and the health of the team. Everyone is tired and in particular the directors of animation Megumi Kagawa and Akihiko Yamashita but also Yôji Takeshige, the artistic director. However, Arrietty’s release date is already set for July 17, 2010, so pushing it back is unthinkable.

As of February 18, 2010, of the 995 shots planned for the entire film, only 332 shots had been ready.

On March 10 and 15, two new production video diaries were release that announced that two months from the deadline, the design team were severely overloaded. Despite Kagawa’s best efforts, there are a lot of things that she unfortunately has to give up, including the drawing corrections made by the animation director. Many animators get sick or hurt themselves (according to Megumi Kagawa, one of the main reasons is the aging of the animators in the studio). However, when it comes to the quality of the animation, Yonebayashi can luckily count on his second animation director. Kagawa has worked as an animator for Studio Ghibli, even before its creation, from Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. With more than 25 years of experience, she knows precisely the works of the studio, which makes her a specialist in the Ghibli graphic style.

The news posted a little over a month later is intended to be more reassuring. On March 20, 2010, the studio now has 45 minutes, 5 seconds of finalized animation, which corresponds to about half of the film (490 shots filmed or 49.2% of the entire film). Nishioka is rather confident, because in comparison with the production of [[Ponyo]] at the same time, this figure is miraculously higher. He thinks that if the team keeps moving forward like this, the film will be ready on time.

Finally, after a final video dedicated to the progress of the production, on April 18, announcing that 634 shots were now filmed (63.7% of the entire film), Junichi Nishioka announced on the blog that the production of Arrietty’s animation was completed on May 29, 2010. Over a period of one year, 74,761 sheets of drawings will have been drawn and blackened by the joint effort of the studio’ s animators so that the film is in theaters on the scheduled date. By this date, the voice recording had already been completed and the finalization of the soundtrack was scheduled for the end of June.

Casting

Junichi Nishioka announcing Ryūnosuke Kamiki has been cast as Sho. This film would be the fifth Ghibli project he was involved in.

The Japanese voice cast of the film was announced on April 13, 2010. Actress Mirai Shida was cast as the voice of Arrietty. Arrietty was Shida’s first voice acting role. In addition, Ryūnosuke Kamiki, who has voiced characters in other Studio Ghibli films like Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle, was cast as Sho. [5] His most recent voice role was in the 2009 film Summer Wars. Kamiki said that he «was very happy to meet up with the staff» he previously knew when he worked on other Studio Ghibli films.

Besides them, the film’s cast includes Tomokazu Miura, Shinobu Otake, Keiko Takeshita, and Kirin Kiki. The four actors have previous voice acting experience, but none of them have been in a Studio Ghibli film before. Miura and Otake were respectively cast as Arrietty’s parents Pod and Homily. In addition, Takeshita voiced Shawn’s aunt and Kiki voiced one of the helpers in the human family.

Promotions

A special promotional event called The Secret World of Arrietty and Yohei Taneda was held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.

From May 8, 2010, super-panoramic posters made of tent fabric (with a length of 1.8m and a width of 10.5m) were displayed at about twenty theaters nationwide. Promotion regarding the film intensified on July 1 in Japan. A concert by Cécile Corbel is held iin a music festival in August of that year.

Studio Ghibli created a 1 / 12ᵉ scale replica of the dollhouse that appears in the film. You can even see a figurine representing Hayao Miyazaki himself, sitting in the house. The house toured Japan, also participating in the promotional campaign around the film. Finally, a film layout exhibition was held at the Sapporo Museum of Contemporary Art.

Release

According to Buta Connection, the premiere of the film production team also took place at the end of June and a press screening took place on 1 July to Tokyo International Forum Hall. Miyazaki didn’t see anything of the film until the premiere. It was his way of supporting the team. “So I don’t want to intervene, even though he’s younger than me.»

“I think he did his job well despite such a young career,” comments Kagawa. “As we do not necessarily communicate a lot in our profession, we are not very good at choosing the exact words to explain things. Yet Maro has made a lot of effort despite his brief career. So I congratulate him!»

The pre-sale of tickets for the film began on April 17, 2010, in Japan. A special promotional booklet containing concept and character art was offered for every reservation (two booklets were originally planned, hence the «1» noted on the one offered). The presale was a great success: 50,000 tickets were sold 30 days before the premiere, which was three times more than for Ponyo.

The Secret World of Arrietty was first released in Japanese cinemas on July 17, 2010, by Japanese film distributor Toho. The film was officially released at a ceremony attended by the film’s cast and Yonebayashi. Corbel performed the film’s theme song at the event. In addition, Yonebayashi hinted that he wanted the film to beat the record of over 12 million audiences set by previous Studio Ghibli film, «Ponyo». The film was screened in 447 theaters throughout Japan during its debut weekend.

Home Media

The Secret World of Arrietty was released in both Blu-Ray and DVD formats within Japan. The DVD version of the film consists of two discs in the region 2 format. The Blu-ray version consists of a single disc in the Region A format. Both versions were released in Japan on June 17, 2011, and both contains English and Japanese subtitles.

Box Office

The Secret World of Arrietty debuted at the first position in the Japanese box office. More than 1 million people went to see the film during its opening weekend. It also grossed around 1.35 billion yen that weekend. In comparison, this film’s opening week gross is 85.6％ of Ghibli’s previous film Ponyo’s total gross and 82.9% of Ponyo’s total ticket sales. Distributor Toho announced that as of 5 August 2010, the film managed to gross more than 3.5 billion yen and attracted more than 3.7 million viewers. According to the Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan, The Secret World of Arrietty is the top grossing Japanese film in their box office for the year for 2010; it grossed approximately 9.25 billion yen.

In France, the film was well received by the public. More than 100,000 people went to catch the film on its debut week in France, allowing the film to gross more than US$1.4 million that week. Overall, ticket sales for Arrietty, le petit monde des chapardeurs in France totaled just shy of 740,000 between its release on January 12, 2011, and March 1, 2011. It also grossed a total of US$7,010,476 at the French box office. The Secret World of Arrietty went on to gross a worldwide total of US$126,368,084.

Critical reception

The Secret World of Arrietty received universal critical acclaim since its release in 2010. 95% of the 21 reviewers selected by Rotten Tomatoes as of November 2011 have given the film positive reviews, certifying it «Fresh» with an average rating of 7.6/10.

Cristoph Mark of The Daily Yomiuri praised the film, saying that the film is «likely a perennial favorite among children.» He particularly liked the film effects, which he described as «Drops of water loom large and drip like syrup; the ticking of a clock reverberates through the floor and the theater’s speakers; tissue paper is large and stiff. «, adding that these effects gives the audience «a glimpse into their own world, but from a different perspective». Cécile Corbel composed the score and sang the theme song for Arrietty, while the film score of The Secret World of Arrietty was composed by French (Bretonne) musician Cécile Corbel. Corbel also performed the film’s theme song, Arrietty’s Song, in Japanese, English, French, German and Italian.

Corbel became known to Ghibli filmmakers when she sent them a fan letter showing her appreciation of their films, together with a copy of her own album. After hearing the album of her music she had sent them, they thought they should collaborate with her for the music of this film. The song made its public debut in a presentation of the song by singer Corbel and percussionist Marco in Apple’s store in Shibuya, Tokyo, on 8 August 2010.

Some of the Japanese theme songs for this film, including Arrietty’s Song was first released online through the iTunes Store, mora and Musico on December 19, 2009. Subsequently, the official album containing all of the theme songs of this film was released on July 14, 2010. The album’s listing on the Oricon charts peaked at the 31st position. Separately, the song Arrietty’s Song was released as a singles album on April 7, 2010. This singles album peaked at the 18th position on the Oricon charts.

Film Manga

The Secret World of Arrietty was adapted into a Japanese manga series. This manga adaptation was first published by Tokuma Shawnten Publishing Co., Ltd. within Japan, and was released in four separate volumes. It was also announced that Viz Media will be releasing the English version of this manga adaptation of the film within North America in January 2012.

Background

Karigurashi no Arrietty is an adaptation of the 1952 novel The Borrowers by Mary Norton. It also marks the cinematic debut of Hiromasa Yonebayashi. One of the charming aspects to this movie is, without a doubt, the amount of attention paid to the little details that makes the presence of little people so believable. The creative, yet simple, ways in which Arrietty and her family are portrayed are captivating, such as the little toolsets Arrietty’s family made in order to explore the “human” house. They use everyday items like fishing hooks, double-sided scotch tape, and spools of thread to create their own little sets of backpacks filled with tools they use to make their lives a little easier, and make the characters fascinatingly believable. The creativity and thought put into the tiny details are awesome, from the fishing hooks and scotch tape, to the little neat cubes of sugar that fits like a well-sized package in the hands of Arrietty.

What I really enjoyed about this movie is how it is told from the point of view of little Arrietty as opposed to the perspective of us “regular humans”. Simple things that you could find in your everyday backyard, from Arrietty’s perspective, all of a sudden have a grandiose feeling to them. Things such as a simple vine you could find creeping across the wall of any old house transforms into an intricate ladder of leaves and stems to the rooftops, or a field of grass and flowers becomes a vast forest. This movie takes your everyday backyard, and turns it into a vast new world to explore. It doesn’t hurt that the scenery and artwork was vibrant and lush with color.

The soundtrack is especially fitting for this movie. The absense of Joe Hisashi’s music in this Ghibli film is instantly noticable, and while some of the pieces here may lack a slight bit of the grandeur of Hisashi’s works, the soundtrack is still well done. What is a bit unusual here is how the soundtrack was actually done by Cécile Corbel, a French singer and Celtic harpist, who was a huge fan of Ghibli works and sent samples of her work to the studio. The Celtic influence in the soundtrack is immediately noticeable, but it was definitely an excellent choice on Ghibli’s part.

Characterization of the actual characters wasn’t exactly anything mindblowingly original or exotic, but the main cast was rather believable for the most part, and had their own charms to them. I found the innocently curious, yet straightforward and resolute attitude of Arrietty quite likable. Her rather odd relationship with Sho, as well as how Sho perceived her, turned out to be quite fascinating and, in a sense, admirable. The subtle tension between the elusive tiny people, and the gigantic humans, are played upon quite well here, which adds quite a few tense moments between Arrietty and Sho. I’d say characterization was quite tastefully handled here for the most part.

And now, for the biggest weakness for this movie. The plot progression and characterization were all fine and all, but the conflict and villain were practically a joke in terms of setup. Seriously, what grudge did old lady Haru have against the little guys? They didn’t explain in detail why she was hunting out the little people, giving only a flimsy excuse that they’re “theives” in a degrogatory tone. The villain just felt very underwhelming, and just doesn’t fit in with this movie’s atmosphere at all. The conflict was kind of discredited in my eyes because of the poorly integrated main antagonist, and there is certainly room for improvement here. Plot progression, while fine and all, was also rather slow at times. While I personally didn’t mind the slow pacing (it lets things sink in more), there were definitely plenty of slowly-paced scenes in this movie.

What makes Arrietty a great watch is the tremendous attention to the details of it’s setting, the beautiful art and music, and the wonderful direction for it’s characters. The plot is admittingly lacking (especially the major conflict, oh boy could it have used some more work), but as a premier film for a new director, this film turned out to be an pleasant surprise. The ending does feel very open ended, though, with a lot of loose ends that feel as if they have yet to be tied up. While the likelihood of a sequel for a Ghibli movie is very slim, I would be totally fine with a sequel for this particular movie.

This movie started very similar to Spirited Away by Studio Ghibli 2001. Driving in a car to somewhere introducing us to the ‘main’ character. AUDI in Spirited Away, Mercedes in Arrietty. With a similar opening theme 11 years later they must have found it effective. Hayao Miyazaki writer and Director of Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle(2004), and planning and Screenplay for The Secret World of Arrietty. The storyline is based on ‘The Borrowers’ by Mary Norton and the music, which incorporated many celtic themes especially enhanced by the harp, was by Cécile Corbel.

. The story could have been so much more thrilling. I enjoyed the character development and appreciated the situation of Arrietty and her family however, it took too long to grip my interest. I was expecting an adventure to occur as the family is trudging through the woods right at the end of the movie. From 14 year old Arrietty figuring out how she fits in with her family, what her role is and who she is, to ‘borrowing’ her first item(a pin) from the humans, Arrietty is curious. She decides to talk to the human Sho, who is physically sick but had heard from his mother that there were small people in the house. He sees Arrietty and desires friendship and so tries to help them out by replacing first the dropped sugar, then kitchen from a dolls house to ‘help’ Arrietty’s family.
This brings about unwanted interest from Haru the house maid and brings what little humour there is to light when she captures Arrietty’s mom and calls the Exterminators/’Capturers’ to deal with the small people. Arrietty’s family decide to move because they were seen, Arrietty feels responsible for this because she was seen, and so they leave to find a new house. Sho feels his connection with Arrietty weakening and for some reason follows the house cat and finds Arrietty and says farewell. I needed something more. The elements were there but were not taken advantage of to capture the interest of it’s viewers hence the ‘6’.

The animation was fantastic looking and transitioned very smoothly from scene to scene. There were minor CG sections that enhanced the overall calming effect I received. There were a few scenes of Sho standing infront of the house where he looked quite static however.

The music was brilliant. I thoroughly enjoyed the celtic twist and jig rhythms that were interspersed throughout the film. The harp at the beginning of the movie was simple yet magical with clear ringing tones that unexpectedly melded with theme of the movie. (Interestingly Morestsu Uchuu Kaizoku (2012) emotes this theme as well) One thing I noticed was when Arrietty ‘sheathed’ her pin through her dress a metal-on-metal sound was played that was not for any affect I could relate to.

Arrietty’s character was developed the most in the film, which is to be expected as the main character however I felt her qualities and traits only scratched the surface. This movie wasn’t about her character as much as the progression of her over the journey. There was not much reflection until the very end where she apologised to her parents and then cried at bidding farewell to Sho. The show focused more on her world than her and if that was what was desired then they did a good job.

I enjoyed the film as I did not know what to expect but my expectations were apparently too high as I left feeling like there could have been much more conflict for Arriettys character. I would have loved to have followed the family down the river to where a new adventure may await. That is where the story could have taken hold for me.

Even before this film had seen the light of day it was victim to scoffs aplenty thanks to this being a remake of the already well-travelled literary classic The Borrowers by Mary Morton. In case you haven’t encountered this tale before, both it and Arrietty tell the tale of a young sickly boy who discovers that there is a family of incredibly small people living under his house. These small creatures are the Borrowers they get their name from borrowing small items and foodstuffs that won’t be missed. The daughter of the family, the titular Arrietty, has a run in with the sickly Sho and they both end up changing each other’s lives for the better. There might be a lack of conflict but you are smothered with the warmth of it all that you really don’t have the time to stop and take stock.

Arrietty is a simple tale told well. It is also the most straight-faced film from a studio known for all things fantastical. Despite the screenplay being written by Miyizaki this has none of the flights of fancy or ecological themes that he is known for nor does it have the social commentary of an Isao Takahata film. Diehard Ghibli fans might call shenanigans on such a straight film being housed under the iconic banner, others, me included, see this as a simple film free from the complexity of some of its most famous cousins. Additionally this is a perfect entry point into what is something hard to access for the casual and mainstream viewer. As popular as both anime and Ghibli is there are very few occasions where you can say that something which fits under those groups can be watched by anyone, Arrietty is such a film. The only other film which is both a piece of Japanese animation and accessible to a mainstream audience is Porco Rosso, Miyizaki’s Casablanca stylised story of a man turned into a pig for cowardice during the first world war.

It might be the most straight adaptation of a famously concept heavy studio, yet that’s not to say this doesn’t have anything in common with its older cousins. Making such a sweeping statement would mean you have missed many little touches and homage’s. The way in which the film places such value on the everyday and the natural world make it the perfect companion piece to My Neighbour Totoro. In fact these two films would make the loveliest double bill imaginable. Sho is a recycled character model of Pazu, the male lead in Laputa and there is a warrior boy who appears midway through the film, called Spiller, who is remarkably similar to Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke even down to the garb that he wears being the same.

The most prescient thing you will notice when watching Arrietty is the sheer unadulterated beauty conjured up by the skilled hands of the animation team. In this age where near enough all animated films released in the West are computer generated it is so refreshing to see something with the personality of hand drawn animation. There might not be the scope of vision of a traditional Ghibli film but that hasn’t stopped the artists on board with this film from representing the everyday whether it is a simple garden, or the even more mundanely the rooms of a house, with such care and affection. There might not be a great amount happening on-screen and there might not be a great deal of conflict save for the final third of the film but it’s one of those films where the visuals and cinematography is so inch perfect that it becomes a visual spectacle. The only negative I can really think of is the sung soundtrack, instrumentally it fits perfectly. With lyrics like “I am 14 years old, I am pretty”, it really made some songs a bitter pill to swallow.

The Borrower Arrietty, Arrietty or whatever you want to call it might feel more like homage to one of the most beloved film studios in the world and I, for one, do not construe that as a negative. This is a beautiful animated and affectionately told story with a cast of well-rounded characters that pays off in all the right ways. This film by director Hiromasa Yonebayashi is a perfect entry point to anime and all things Ghibli. Give it a watch if you get the chance but make sure it’s either in the original Japanese or the English dub. The cast of the American dub is enough to cause nightmares.

Крохотный рост наших героев позволяет без лишних усилий стащить необходимый им предмет и при этом остаться незамеченными.

Но все же малыши всегда осторожничают, так как понимают, что даже малейшая ошибка чревата раскрытием их секрета. А это в свою очередь может повлечь печальные последствия. Однако мальчику по имени Сё удается познакомиться с одной из добываек.

Однажды он заметил кошку, шипящую на какое-то маленькое существо. Присмотревшись мальчуган понял, что объектом агрессии домашнего животного стала микроскопическая девочка. Так он познакомился с Ариэтти. Благодарная за свое спасение девчушка доверилась Сё и они даже сумели подружиться.

Однако родителей девочки совершенно не радовало такое знакомство. Более того они намерены немедленно переехать в другой дом. Неужели новоиспеченным друзьям теперь придется расстаться?

Марафон Ghibli. Ариэтти из страны лилипутов. Рецензия

История трудного пути

Концепция мира, населённого маленькими человечками, не нова. На книжных полках можно встретить множество историй, которые раскрывают эту идею с разных углов, начиная с классического произведения Палмера Кокса о Незнайке и его идейных продолжениях от Николая Носова и заканчивая относительно свежим циклом от Люка Бессона «Артур и минипуты». На недостаток экранных воплощений подобных сюжетов также жаловаться не приходится.

В каждом таком произведении есть свой шарм и при должном подходе можно получить хорошую, изобретательную историю, которая не была бы очередной вариацией на тему. Но о том, получилось ли у это у режиссёра «Ариэтти из страны лилипутов» Хиромасы Ёнэбаяси и сценариста Хаяо Миядзаки мы поговорим позже.

Изначально идея к Миядзаки пришла во время прочтения в юном возрасте романа Мэри Нортон «Добывайки», однако долгое время до экранизации истории дело не доходило. Лишь ближе к седьмому десятку Миядзаки всё же написал сценарий, основываясь уже не столько на первоисточнике, который он решил не перечитывать, сколько на своих ностальгических воспоминаниях.

Первое, что обращает на себя внимание при просмотре – атмосфера. Она покоряет с самого первого кадра и остаётся главным фактором, удерживающим зрителя. На ум приходят произведения Рэя Брэдбери, где он предаётся воспоминаниям об ушедшем детстве и красоте природы. И в таком мире в самом деле хочется жить, и таким вниманием к мелочам можно лишь восхищаться.

Когда нам показывают мир добываек, рука тянется к кнопке паузы – так и хочется насладиться потрясающим вниманием создателей к деталям. Каждый чайничек, каждый объект на столе, каждую «картину» (на деле же почтовые марки) можно разглядывать по несколько минут. Такую магию не заменит даже самая качественная и проработанная 3D-анимация.

И тут мы плавно переходим к самой режиссуре. В отдельных сценах челюсть невольно падает на один уровень с полом – например, во время вылазки отца и дочери за кусочком сахара под покровом ночи. В такие моменты хочется встать и похлопать – настолько правильно и напряжённо они выстроены, и каждый кадр срабатывает. К сожалению, чувство восхищения несколько потухает со временем, так как градус изобретательности у сценариста на пару с художником падает. Не критически, но отметить стоит.

Как бы ни хотелось и дальше хвалить «Ариэтти из страны лилипутов», но, увы, проработка мира – единственное, к чему нет существенных претензий. С остальными пунктами дела обстоят куда сложнее. И проблемы со сценарием в целом и мотивацией у некоторых героев в частности – главный из недостатков.

Если безынициативность и пассивность Сё (даже в плане дружбы с Ариэтти) можно объяснить тем, что у него слабое сердце, то вот излишнюю активность номинальной злодейки (служанка) понять трудно. Она хочет поймать добываек и посадить их в банку, потому что… видимо, просто хочет – и всё тут. Нет, конечно, в сюжете есть вялое объяснение, что ей не нравится, когда добывайки воруют всякую мелочёвку, но проявлять такую бессердечность и жестокость просто потому, что у тебя из под носа раз в неделю воруют кусочек сахара и подбирают булавку с пола – форменный идиотизм. Особенно когда хозяйка дома даже не просит об этом.

Проблемы с персонажами на этом не заканчиваются. Хотя нельзя не отметить, что следить за развитием отношений в семье интересно, а их разговоры очень естественные и душевные, всё же с Хомили, матерью Ариэтти, есть одна трудность. Она, как и многие другие матери, умеет лишь постоянно визжать и падать в обмороки. Безусловно, она должна иметь и другие, чуть более полезные в хозяйстве качества, но создатели обошли вниманием этот нюанс, из-за чего каждый раз, когда появляется матушка, хочется закрыть глаза и заткнуть уши – настолько сцены с ней раздражают.

А ещё во второй половине кто-то счёл хорошей идеей ввести ещё одного персонажа – Спиллера, который появляется буквально в трёх с половиной сценах и влияет на происходящее не настолько сильно, чтобы это выглядело оправданным.

Во всей истории хорошо выписаны лишь два героя: Ариэтти и её отец. Несмотря на небольшой рост, Ариэтти оказывается стойкой, храброй девушкой с крепким внутренним стержнем – вся в родителя пошла.

Так что именно персонажи – тот пункт, из-за которого не хочется оценивать мультфильм на высший балл. Разумеется, если вы готовы закрыть глаза на этот недостаток – получите огромное удовольствие. А уж если вы ребёнок, то и подавно, так как все недостатки выше – скорее придирки скучных и занудных взрослых.

Вердикт: «Ариэтти из страны лилипутов» вполне неплоха как цельное законченное произведение, но, как ни иронично, существенно проседает в мелочах.

Четырнадцатилетняя Ариэтти Клок и остальные члены ее семьи “добываек” живут в мире и гармонии, прячась от остального мира, создавая свой собственный дом из предметов, которые они позаимствовали у людей, живущих в доме. Берущая понемножку Ариэтти и другие ошибки перевода

Здравствуйте, почитатели творчества Хаяо Миядзаки, любители японской анимации и просто проходящие мимо читатели!

Эх, Бог с ними, с переводчиками. Поговорим о приятном:

Красивая, качественная рисовка фонов сразу бросается в глаза и ставит незабываемый фингал.

Музыка спокойная, размеренная, незапоминающаяся. Мне она показалась черезчур скучной. Песни – никакие. Первая песня слишком однотонная, да еще и на английском. Если бы я хотела услышать песню на английском, я бы поставила английский/американский мультик. Благо, песен в них много.

Даешь песни на японском! «Песня Ариэтти» лучше, но тоже не шедевр.

Добывайки живут в своём маленьком мирке, под носом у людей. Для того, чтобы маленькие человечки продолжали свое существование, оно должно оставаться тайной. Но что случится, если кто-то случайно увидит добывайку? Это и предстоит узнать храброй и доброй Ариэтти.

Развитие сюжета шагает маленькими, медленными, осторожными шажочками, из-за чего можно неожиданно уснуть.

Концовка, по моему скромному мнению, никакая. Неожиданно обретенная храбрость в сердце героя совершенно не обоснована. Слишком мало диалогов между главными героями.

П.С. Тем, кто не читал книги Мэри Нортон, не смотрел ни один из фильмов о «Занимашках» будет интересно. Другим может быть скучно. Как мне.

Герои предпочитают скрываться от представителей человечества, не желая привлекать к себе лишнее внимание. Они прозвали себя «добывайками» за способность доставать то, что им необходимо. Часто нужные вещи находятся неподалеку, но принадлежат людям. Пользуясь своими физическими параметрами, герой могут достать их проявив усилия, и оставшись незамеченными для хозяев предметов. Лилипуты стараются быть очень осторожными. Они хорошо понимают, что малейшая ошибка может обернуться для них раскрытием, что повлечет за собой необратимые последствия.

Но юному герою Сё предстоит познакомиться с одной из них. Все началось с того, что паренек спас бедняжку от разъяренной кошки. Ариэтти благодарна своему спасителю, не видит в нем особой угрозы. История рассказывает о крохотных существах, практически не отличающихся от людей. Единственным различием являются маленькие размеры. Герои предпочитают скрываться от представителей человечества, не желая привлекать к себе лишнее внимание. Они прозвали себя «добывайками» за способность доставать то, что им необходимо. Часто нужные вещи находятся неподалеку, но принадлежат людям. Пользуясь своими физическими параметрами, герой могут достать их проявив усилия, и оставшись незамеченными для хозяев предметов. Лилипуты стараются быть очень осторожными. Они хорошо понимают, что малейшая ошибка может обернуться для них раскрытием, что повлечет за собой необратимые последствия.

Но юному герою Сё предстоит познакомиться с одной из них. Все началось с того, что паренек спас бедняжку от разъяренной кошки. Ариэтти благодарна своему спасителю, не видит в нем особой угрозы. Она решает познакомиться с ним, несмотря на строгий запрет родителей. Между ребятами зарождается крепкая дружба. Но скоро об этом узнает семья девочки. Сюжет аниме

Недалеко на запад от Токио, в Коганею приезжает вместе со своей бабушкой 12-летний мальчик Шо. Совсем скоро ему предстоит тяжелое испытание, поэтому ему нужно приготовиться к встрече с ним. Для этого в этой глуши он должен наслаждаться свежим воздухом, читать и отдыхать от городской суеты.

Перед отъездом мама Шо рассказала ему один секрет о здешних местах, и с этими знаниями мальчик появляется в доме бабушки. И надо же, чтобы ему так повезло, в первые же минуты он замечает то чудо, о котором ему рассказали.

Под домом живут удивительные существа, которых именуют «Добывайки». Это небольшие человечки, около 10 сантиметров в росте и живут они втайне от «больших» людей и всячески стараются тайно достать из их домов небольшие излишки, подобно кусочку сахара или нескольких печенюшек. Скрываться от человечества заставляет его патологическая жестокость и опасение за собственные жизни. Тем не менее, именно Шо в первый же день замечает одну из добываек.

Ей оказывается Ариэтти, которой исполняется 14 лет, а живет она вместе с папой и мамой. Обычно в дом людей ходит только отец, но дочь стала уже взрослой и пора ей начинать учиться делу добываек.

И вот ночью отец ведет ее на первую экскурсию в дом. Однако, она вновь попадается на глаза мальчику и тот пытается с ней заговорить, та же решает убежать. К сожалению, о жизни в доме небольших человечков знает и местная старая экономка и у нее явно намерения не только пообщаться с ними.

Впечатления от просмотра

Вообще, рассказывать о произведениях студии «Гибли» очень неблагодарное дело. Практически всегда ты знаешь, что тебе покажут, знаешь, что история не будет излишне сложной, знаешь, что будут смешные, милые и трогательные моменты. Но практически всегда ты оказываешься к ним не готов. Миядзаки и все его ученики научились создавать свои фильмы по принципу «неизвестное об известном». Получилось это и сейчас.

Первое, чему ты уделяешь внимание, это даже не герои, не музыка, не сюжет, а рисовка. Точнее будет сказать, внимание к каждой детали. Все, вплоть до тарелок, нарисовано тщательно и индивидуально. Причем в «Ариэтти из страны лилипутов» это еще более заметно, чем в других аниме данной студии, и в определенные моменты кажется, что в произведении переворачивают мир. Именно так выглядит первое путешествие добываек по человеческому дому. То, что нам кажется привычным, с точки зрения этих маленьких людей, всё превращается в небоскребы и огромные каньоны. И от этого сложно отвести взгляд.

Потом включается звуковое сопровождение, и оно великолепно. Обычно к картинам от японской студии «Гибли» не придраться насчет звуков и музыки. Но при этом и выделить этот аспект сложно, так как он создан на классе, но не более. Тут же авторы явно прыгнули выше головы. При этом песни мне напомнили будущую работу Миядзаки, а именно «Ветер Крепчает» (о данном аниме мы уже как-то писали). Даже русская озвучка тут вполне слушается, тем более полнометражные работы у нас обычно звучат лучше.

Тут вроде присутствуют все привычные темы, будь то столкновение детского (сказочного) и взрослого (реального) или же уничтожение человеческой цивилизацией последних нетронутых уголков в мире. Но там, где Миядзаки обычно показывал символы и намеки, Ёнэбаяси не стесняется и строит целые диалоги. Тут герой может честно и в камеру сказать, что многие виды животных и растений исчезли с планеты. Зрителю только остается принять эту мысль и задуматься о будущем добываек.

Впервые появился еще и действительно отрицательный персонаж. Его играет экономка, хотя по манере своей она больше напоминает малолетнего хулигана, который поймал жука и отрывает по очереди лапки. Именно в этом персонаже переплелись все грехи человечества, в ней есть и злоба, и невежество, чрезмерное любопытство и даже зависть.

Еще никогда студия «Гибли» не рождала таких отрицательных персонажей. Мы уже привыкли, что они давали нам возможность понять – нет злых людей. Но если даже они отошли от этого правила, то наверно с нашим миром действительно что-то не так.

Однако героиня, в которую просто невозможно не влюбиться и открытый финал оставляют надежду на исправление наших ошибок.

Вместо заключения, я бы хотел обратиться к людям, которые любят аниме и смотрят его. Вы часто плачетесь и ругаете российские кинотеатры, что они не показывают большие полнометражные аниме-фильмы, как это делают во многих странах мира. И несомненно, это плохо. Но фильм «Ариэтти из страны лилипутов» собрал в прокате около 150 миллионов долларов. При этом в России сборы составили всего 125 тысяч. Друзья, если вы даже не ходите в кинотеатры на фильмы студии «Гибли», то не ждите, что появятся другие аниме.

Even without Miyazaki at the helm, first time director Hiromasa Yonebayashi carries the Ghibli DNA and makes real magic.

Some of their most powerful magic is realizing characters, both children and adults alike, that are so plausibly authentic that you effortlessly slip into the world they inhabit. The stories are inevitably from the point of view of the children, but the adults are never props; they are fully realized and they are drawn as our child protagonist would see them.

The Secret World of Arrietty is one of the most memorable Studio Ghibli productions I’ve seen so far, mainly thanks to its largely relatable fantasy as well as its resounding message regarding environmental protection.

The Secret World of Arrietty is an imaginative, heartfelt story of how a family of mini-human survive the cruel intentions of human beings, with the help from one of their human «enemies». The exquisite, lush visuals typical of Studio Ghibli immediately puts you into the right headspace for an intense and emotionally charged journey of friendship and family love. The intricate settings of a mini-human world and its sophisticated working mechanism are simply ingenious and remind us of everything we love about Studio Ghibli.

Overall The Secret World of Arrietty is guaranteed to be an equal parts joyful and melancholic ride that’s ultimately rewarding with its artistic achievements as well as its abundant sensitivity. Highly recommended.

Но, глядя, как капает (догадайтесь, почему капает, а не течёт 🙂 ) чай из носика миниатюрного чайника, я готов забыть этот недостаток.

В наше бурное время, такого столь сказочного, но без каскадов прыжков, нырков и комичных ужимок уже не увидеть, и столь лиричное, но без накрахмаленной до хруста романтичности – давно не сыскать!

Впрочем, подобное совсем не удивительно – сюжет обрабатывал, модернизировал, и одушевлял сам Миядзаки-старший, перо не дрожало в руке мастера, и режиссер-постановщик «Ариэти», Хиромаса Енебаяси, борозды проложенной знаменитым маэстро не портил.

Вероятно, если бы «Ариэте» была анимирована компанией Диснея, Dream Works, или иной другой студией соответствующего размаха, то и конечный результат был бы явно иным, если даже не диаметрально противоположенным.

Сама Ариэти – далеко не барби, которая нуждается в непрестанном спасении «прекрасным принцем», не фетиш отважных принцесс и потенциальных волшебниц, но обаятельная пацанка с первыми симптомами пробуждающейся женственности, больше похожая характером на осторожного отца, чем на сорвиголову, уставшую от родительской опеки.

Усмотреть в сюжете «Ариэте» скрытый, экологический посыл не возбраняется. Так будьте аккуратными с тем, что нас окружает, быть может, ваша жизнь – для тех, кто поменьше и слабее может оказаться настоящим разгулом стихии. Однако мудрый Хайяо, на пару с Хиромасой (тем же финалом фильма, как он есть) слишком хорошо знают свое «сказочное дело», чтобы размениваться на эквилибристику всего одной скрытой моралью.

Ну что сказать, ожидал, конечно же, большего. Может быть, перегорел, не знаю, но претензии к фильму имеются.

— короткие, будто смятые сцены. Иногда казалось, продли мгновение еще секунд на пять — и этот кадр будет завершенным, цельным. Наверное, неопытность режиссера, не знаю. Но вообще-то не помешало бы добавить лишних 10—15 минут в повествование, а то мы фактически ничего не узнали, помимо того, что уже было понятно из трейлера. Та же плачущая Ариэтти в начале — так и не понял, что ее огорчило. То, что ее заметили? Не оправдала ожиданий? Или кубик сахара и первый неудачный поход? Или что-то глубже? Всего пара слов, брошенных мимоходом — и зритель мог бы лучше понять ее внутренний мир. Но нет, впопыхах — и к следующей части.

— незавершенный конец. Это не то, чтобы ужасная ошибка, но в той же «Наусике» или «Пяти сантиметрах» это смотрится логично и оставляет зрителя на эмоциональном пике, в катарсисе. Здесь же как бы говорится «ну вот и всё, дальше нам говорить не о чем. Пока», и никаких ощущений, кроме той же дымчатой неги, что сопровождала тебя весь просмотр, не испытываешь. В конце авторы, сами всё понимая, попытались выдавить из тебя восторг кадром «моря», которое мечтала увидеть мать Ариэтти, но так как это желание было для нее каким-то побочным, десятым или тридцатым в ее списке, да и особой симпатии к трусишке-мамаше не испытываешь, то это не берет и не волнует.

Сюда же относятся и все невыстрелившие ружья — начиная от кукольного домика, мамы и папы мальчика, и заканчивая шпилькой. Никаких моральных выводов тоже не следует, что странно для детского фильма. Типа как Ариэтти своим примером показала мальчику, что следует быть храбрым. Неубедительно.

— надуманность главного конфликта. Честно говоря, первый раз такое в фильмах Гибли, насколько я знаю. Здесь всегда ставились глобальные, глубинные вопросы, и у Ариэтти такой был — вырождение ее лилипутьего племени, но в фильме главной проблемой становится полусумасшедшая старушка, к которой непонятно даже, как относится. Лично я относился с жалостью и брезгливостью. Если в ее образе нам пытались подать идею о том, что «все люди — враги вороваек», то это стопроцентно не удалось. Нет больше такого человека в целом мире, я в этом уверен, кто стал бы поступать так же, как эта бабуля. У нее какой-то бзик или шиза.

В-общем, претензий еще много — и к сценарию, и к постановке. Лично я бы хотел развития идеи(замечательной идеи!) в другом ключе, и перед просмотром главный вопрос у меня был — всё-таки она увеличится, или же он уменьшится? Рисунок красивый, даже очень, но его мало — пространство замкнутое, ничего, кроме интерьеров дома и полянки и не показать.

+ В плюсы, конечно, отнесу атмосферу. Она есть, она прекрасна. Главная героиня — всё тот же Миядзаковский типаж и тихоня-мальчик с, разумеется, добрым сердцем — другого и не ждали. Другие герои все мельком-мельком, но характер каждого, в-принципе, понятен и раскрыт (даже кота и вороны). Понравилась мягкая робость первых шажков друг к другу мальчика и Ариэтти. Понравился внутренний уклад вороваек. Очень понравилось, как капает чай из чайника у мамы Ариэтти — всё-таки с физикой создатели дружат (где пылинки размером с ноготь Ариэтти, почему муравьи не прокусили ей руку, где один из главных естественных врагов вороваек — паук, почему она не прыгает, аки кузнечик, почему ее не разрывает изнутри и прочие физиологические, микрофизические вопросы — уже слишком для создателей детского фильма, да и никто не пойдет на такое хрумкать корн). Понравилась музыка — главная тема очень хрупкая, нежная, да и голосок у Сесиль чистый и трогательный.

В завершении должен сказать, что это не лучший фильм Гибли. Но и не такой провальный, как первый фильм Горо (наверное, потому, что над сценарием работал и Хаяо). Меньше восьми поставить мышка не подвинется.

В этом аниме есть прекрасная картинка, качественная музыка, однако сюжет, от которого ждёшь Миядзаковского чуда, остаётся привычным и незатейливым.

Нету полёта воображения, ощущения чуда, сбывшейся мечты.
Есть просто сюжет, пару не очень удачных поворотов, опять те же заезженные фразы о вреде, которые люди причиняют природе, экологии.

Причём началось это уже довольно давно.
Ещё в «Ходячем замке Хоула» было заметно что-то не то.
Потом «Рыбка Пуэньо» и теперь этот фильм продолжает череду не самых удачных фильмов Миядзаки.

P.S. Почему-то все новые фильмы Гибли сравнивают со старыми (и я тоже), конечно, когда мы были маленькими или может не очень, тогда ранние фильмы Гибли смотрелось прямо ах, сейчас уже несколько лет Гибли не потрясает нас ничем, да, работы хорошие, но так, чтобы «вставляло», увы, нету.

и еще раз после написанного: и все же жду я увидеть от Гибли что-то более эпическое, такое, как Навсикая, Мононоке или вдруг сиквел Порко Россо.

Я долго ждал продолжение работ студии Гибли и наконец-то дождался.

Аниме порадовала классической рисовкой студии, которую не перепутаешь ни с какой другой. Сама рисовка уже заставляет радоваться глазу и душе. Сопроводительную музыку, как мне показалось, в этот раз подобрали непревзойденную! Я редко скачиваю саундтреки, но на сей раз во флаке (не пожадничал)! Традиционное отличие историй от Гибли в том, что в сценах много продуманых элементов. Так и в этом аниме, нажмите паузу на любом эпизоде и присмотритесь сколько всего изображено. Это заставляет прочувствовать, ощутить обстановку в которой происходят события. Это заставляет влиться и сопереживать с главными героями. Мир, как его видят лилипуты, изобразили очень хорошо. Сюжет может и не замысловат, но я не знал как именно закончиться история, что заставляло держать некую напряженность в течении всей истории.

История пропитана чувствами, с которыми деляться герои. Я благодарен студии Гибли за еще одну чудесную работу!

Хотя в целом аниме выполнено хорошо, заметны дыры, которые значительно уменьшают удовольствие от просмотра. Как примеры можно привести нераскрытые характеры персонажей (хотя для «включения» в сюжет они тут, очевидно, необходимы); всё, что не связано с текущей ситуацией, разворачивающейся на экране, оказывается в дымке неопределённости, длящейся все полтора часа и только сгущающейся под конец; музыка хотя и неплоха, но включается внезапно и практически от фонаря; креатив на необычное оказался практически нулевой. Из достоинств можно отметить вполне правдоподобную демонстрацию быта лилипутов и потрясающе детальные и красивые фоны. Но в отрыве от контекста истории она оказывается единственным сильными плюсами. Осталось ощущение хорошо сделанных декораций, среди которых играют начинающие актёры.

Вкратце, если кто не понял, к чему я веду, лучше прочитать «Добывайки» (и продолжения) Мэри Нортон и не мозолить себе глаза этой анимацией, так как она не даёт полноты ощущений хорошей истории. Хотя, если читать лень, и на горизонте нет ничего любопытнее, аниме вполне сойдёт для семейного просмотра с детьми лет 7-12.

Странные чувства у меня остались после просмотра. Какой-то меланхолический осадок. Честно, ожидал большего. Ждал чего-то приключенческого. В итоги перед нами картина, наполненная неторопливыми повседневными событиями. Грустно. Не знаю, может от того, последние в своём роду лилипуты, доживая свой век в ожидании того, что их род скоро вымрет. После раскрытия им приходиться покидать свой дом, бросая всё. Честно, я до конца фильма ожидал, что мальчик отдаст тот шикарный дом им. Но, в итоге он так и остался так пылиться. С мальчиком тоже не всё так гладко. Развод, без родителей с больным сердце и неизвестно выживет он после операции. В конце в надежде на эпилог мы всё-таки и не получаем ответы на все вопросы. Наладилась ли жизнь у лилипутов, как прошла операция у мальчика. Всё это остаётся за кулисами действия. Сюжет, конечно, слабый, не в том смысле, что он бес смыленный и бездарный. А то, что не раскрыт до конца, не хватает большего действия. Самая такая комичная и динамичная сцена, это когда ворон влетел в окно и застрял в сетке. Хоть и сюжет слабоват, но он всё равно располагает к размышлении и осмыслению.
Ну, про графическую, часть хочется сказать, что студия Studio Ghibli доказала в очередной раз, что она лидер в производстве качественной анимацией. Каждый кадр, каждая сцена проработана до мелочей. В некоторые моменты ты отвлекаешься от сюжета и эстетически наслаждаешься красотой пейзажей, интерьера и.т.д. Всё это создаёт неповторимый мир, который хочется разглядывать. Хоть в картине присутствуют минусы, но она всё ровно достойна вашего внимания.

«Добывайка Ариэтти» стала реабилитацией Хаяо Миядзаки (хотя и не он там был режиссёром) для тех, кого не слишком порадовали его последние фильмы (особенно невнятной, хотя и мастерски выполненной, мне, как и многим, показалась «Поньё»).

Первоисточник я помнил довольно смутно, ибо читал книгу четверть века тому, но точно был не готов увидеть столь щемящую сердце (с ним, кстати, буквальная физиологическая проблема у одного из протагонистов) историю обречённой любви. Когда Ариэтти заплакала… Эта кульминация была совершенно естественной. Вроде бы и семья у неё прекрасная, и приятель из своего народа подыскался как будто из ниоткуда, но ведь это чудовищно обидно — лишиться выбора, оказаться грубо поставленной на место бездушными обстоятельствами, когда ничего поделать просто невозможно. Мастер блеснул искусством трагедии, прежде отмечавшейся тенью, но не очерченной столь явно, в некоторых его произведениях.

Что до побочных мотивов, то увлечённая идеей геноцида домработница смотрится дико. В неё трудно поверить — но это оттого, что верить не хочется. Фильм демонстрирует прохождение грани, отделяющей мирного обывателя от фашистского палача, одержимого страхом перед полчищами инородцев. Для Японии это её недавняя милитаристская история, да и у нас хватает любителей воображать людей чуждыми и враждебными тараканами, массовая травля которых прямо-таки праздник для души.

Напротив, экологическая тема, скорее модная, нежели популярная, и едко обходимая досточтимым Миядзаки, притянута наскоро, за уши и ни к селу ни к городу. Ну, в самом деле, какую силу могут иметь высказываемые Ариетти претензии к роду людскому, если сами добывайки всё ж таки на нём паразитируют (хоть из-за крайней малочисленности и даже вымирания и неощутимо), а вовсе не живут на лоне природы, в гармонии с оной? Такие претензии могли предъявлять тануки из перекликающегося с «Ариэтти» фильма, к которому также был причастен Миядзаки.

«Ариэтти» — очень трогательный, красивый и душевный фильм. В нём есть подлинный катарсис, отмеченный и мальчиком-протагонистом, когда он обретает уверенность перед операцией. Нет никакой гарантии, что эта операция совершится благополучно, как нет никаких гарантий и в нашей жизни, но если было подлинное человеческое чувство, в будущее можно смотреть без страха.

Честно, фильм не понравился (особенно на фоне других работ этой студии так это вообще провал).

И вот почему:
1. Вранье. Ну вот с каких это пор в картинах гибли главные герои стали нагло и неприкрыто врать в лицо друг другу? Перый раз когда Ариетети с отцом приходят и нагло врут матери что «фонарик сел», ну ладно пол беды, перекосило конешно, но я еще терпел, но не прошло и 20 минут как паренек сидя за столом на кухне не краснея врет тете что никаких маленьких человечков не видел! Ну это ппц. И я бы понял еще если бы так делали явно отрицательные герои, НО ЧТОБЫ ГЛАВНЫЕ ПОЛОЖИТЕЛЬНЫЕ ГЕРОИ В ПОСУТИ ДЕТСКОМ ФИЛЬМЕ. это выше моего понимания.
2. Логика и мотивация. Нету ни того ни другого. Отсюда и смятый весь сюжет. Единственный логичный персонаж это домработница, ну и тетя еще. Остальные все это просто мрак. С боооольшими натягами некоторую логичность можно хаметить в Ариетти (точнее списать ее нелогичность на саму ситуацию в корую она попадает) но все остальные то чем заняты? Финиш это конешно кошка, чем обусловлнена ее перемены в отношении маленьких человечков на 180 градусов одному богу известно.
3. Заболевание главгероя. Нахнева вообще. и причем вообще. И что если бы он не был болен то сюжет долженн бы был измениться? Он должен был бы схватить Ариетти и сдать в поликлиннику на опыты? Оо

Тьфу короче, лучше бы не смотрел, очень расстроился. Гибли уже не тот.

Фильм милый, но поверхностный. Детский? Вряд ли. Даже в «Моем соседе Тоторо» есть законченный сюжет. Ребенок, не приторможенный богатым внутренним миром, воспримет историю сгубившей дом, но спасшей маму Ариетти как затянувшийся пролог к настоящим событиям. Которые не покажут.

Самый придирчивый, усталый зритель может оценить изобретательность проработки эффектов. Чудные флора, капли жидкости (снятие дождя с платья должно бы стать классикой), игра пропорций. И игнорирование реальной структуры поверхностей (загляните в «Микрокосмос» Перрена). Ветром добываек не сносит, трава перед ними расступается, а кубик сахара им на год. Благодаря такой избирательности, картинка, сохраняя правдоподобие, далека от грубого натурализма кожных пор, волос-веревок свифтовских великанов. И не настолько условна, как диснеевские бурундуки.

. Льётся нежный женский голос, струится меж высоких зелёных зарослей река, освещаемая набирающими силу рассветными лучами солнца. Уплывает то, что остаётся в нашей памяти, и ещё не раз сожмёт только-только начавшее биться ровнее сердце.

Оказывается, по «Добывайкам» есть аниме. Я в детстве очень любила эту книжку про маленьких человечков, много раз перечитывала. В общем-то, и сейчас люблю, просто давно не читала.
Аниме понравилось — возможно, потому, что я ничего особенного не ждала, ибо переврали сюжет изрядно. Но все-таки Миядзаки — это вам не баран чихнул, поэтому снято интересно, нарисовано очень уютно и ярко. Замечательно получился дом добываек, хотя чересчур, по-моему, светло и красиво. Ариетта очень удачная, Под тоже. Хомили сделали немного приятнее, чем в книге, да и вообще отношения между героями показались менее напряженными. Спиллера я представляла по-другому, но так тоже неплохо. Музыка хорошая, с кельтскими какими-то мотивами как будто.
В целом, мульт вышел, на мой взгляд, более позитивный, чем книжка. Не то чтобы книжка мрачная, но как-то в ней все не настолько лучезарно. Так или иначе, возмущения, что «все неправильно сняли», после просмотра не возникает, в отличие от большинства других экранизаций чего бы то ни было.

Удивительно то, как полнометражные фильмы Миядзаки умеют показать нежную красоту окружающего. Не нужно никаких новомодных ухищрений, только любовь художника – и мир на экране становится осязаемым, пахнет и дышит дожем, землей, цветами и солнцем.

Робкая дружба, не любовь еще. Завораживающе искренняя, чистая, свежий воздух после дождя. Созданная поступками, не словами. Как старо и как надежно забыто большинством из нас.

А сразу после – горько-сладкий ком в горле, прощание и надежда, сплетенные тесно, неразделимые. Но можно и нужно еще раз вдохнуть полной грудью. И еще-еще раз. А потом посмотреть на сияющее солнце впереди. Все только начинается. Все будет хорошо.

После просмотра фильма первые полчаса просто проревела. А последующие несколько дней пребывала в состоянии некой оторванности от мира, пока не пришла в себя и не смогла адекватно описать все свои мысли и эмоции по этому поводу.

По мне, так Ариэтти пропитана самой вязкой безнадегой и безысходностью, которую только можно было вообразить в работах Миядзаки.

Вы, кстати, видели взгляд отца Ариэтти? Я когда его увидела, сразу заподозрила что-то неладное, и шестое чувство мне во время всего просмотра твердило, что в конце я увижу какой-то капец. Собственно так и случилось. Этот измученный жизнью и происходящим вокруг однообразием взгляд меня просто добил.

В интернете ходят слова Миядзаки:

«Я законченный пессимист. Но если у кого-то из коллег рождается ребенок, все, что мне остается — это пожелать ему счастливого будущего. Ведь ни у кого нет права говорить ребенку, что он не должен был рождаться в этом догорающем мире. И мы никак не можем ему помочь — разве что благословить его. Собственно, думая об этом, я и делаю свои фильмы.

Мне кажется, что дети интуитивно понимают это лучше, чем взрослые: мир, в котором они родились, безжалостен, безнадежен и сыр.

Несмотря на пессимизм, я не собираюсь делать фильмы, которые говорят: отчаивайся, беги и прячься. Все, что я хочу сказать — это: не бойся, когда-нибудь все встанет на свои места, и где-то тебя точно поджидает что-то хорошее. «

И все же мне кажется, что именно в Ариэтти Миядзаки показал, что такое жизнь на самом деле.

Иногда такое бывает,что я влюбляюсь в главных героинь фильмов или книг,и Ариэтти не стала исключением. Может симпатии к этой милой добывайке не дают трезво оценить фильм, но я постараюсь.

Сюжет сразу напомнил мне одну из работ Люка Бессона «Артур в стране минипутов», хотя сюжетные линии развиваются совсем разных направлениях, или того мышонка Стюарта Литла. Одним словом тема маленьких человечков заезжена в мировой культуре вдоль и поперёк и я не мог понять что нового могут преподнести авторы, но все-таки Гибли это Гибли! они всегда умели сделать обыденное ярким и не забываемым! рассказывать о развитие сюжета не стоит, оно и так предсказуемо, но затягивает что не оторваться.

Персонажи как всегда : яркие,добрые и честные, по всем стандартам Гибли и самого дедушки Миядзаки! а что насчет Хару спросите вы, а я отвечу что она вообше не отрицательный персонаж, в сказках Миядзаки нету антагонистов, вернее они есть, но до определенного момента или делают зло сами думая что делают добро.

Как бы мне так сильно не нравилась это милая история есть здесь и негативные моменты. Во-первых, драмы у них не получилось! Да Шо болен, да Ариэтти надо переезжать, но это все так поверхностно сделано. Ариэтти и Шо встречались от силы 3-4 раза, а в конце Ариэтти говорит что он смог её зашитить, хотя об этом до этого ни разу не упоминалось, я надеюсь вы меня поняли. Во-вторых, затянули с развитием сюжета и мы добрый час наблюдали за повседневностью добываек, хотя это время можно было отдать развитию отношению главных героев! это чисто мое мнение.

К позитивным моментам отнесу невероятно милую,отважную и добрую главную героиню, слабого телом, но сильного духом мальчика Шо. Но самое главное это смелость Гибли создать такую некоммерческую сказку, ведь неизвестно как воспримут её критики или какие будут сборы! Я думаю именно эта смелость делает Гибли особенным. При всем уважении к великому Диснею должен сказать что их работы имели больше экономический характер чем фантазийный, хотя это тоже их хуже не делает, а может и лучше.

P.S. я ни минуты потраченного времени не жалел от просмотра этого фильма и буду рекомендовать всем, а если не понравиться то это дело вкуса а не чего то другого!

Очень красиво, но мало.
Не успеваешь еще толком погрузиться в теплый и уютный мир сказочных человечков, как тут же появляется холодная рука режиссера и выгоняет тебя обратно в жестокую реальность…
А где, простите меня, сюжет? Где приключения? Где романтика?!
Почему сюжет из завязки вдруг прыгает сразу в развязку?
Это точно детская сказка, а не аниме?
Если так, то почему прекрасная принцесса в итоге обязана здесь выйти замуж по расчету, а не по любви…?
Нет, пусть уж лучше дети и дальше растут на «гарантийных человечках», а весь этот пафосный околоэкологический бред (который тут вообще не к месту) оставим для страждущих.

Arrietty Clock is an almost 14-year-old borrower in Studio Ghibli’s The Secret World of Arrietty. This is a Hiromasa Yonebayashi film that was adapted from Mary Norton’s novel The Borrowers.

She is voiced by Bridgit Mendler in the United States dub, and Saoirse Ronan in the United Kingdom dub.

Arrietty is extremely inquisitive, adventurous, and always willing to help, no matter the consequences or the risk. She’s uncompromisingly courageous and eager to be a part of bigger things, both in the literal and figurative senses. She’s open-minded, clever, and resourceful, an intuitive nonconformist/progressive who refuses to fit into the conventional mold of timid borrowers who are terrified of humans. She befriends Shawn because she sees the traditional boundaries between their two worlds as conditional and outdated, and because she understands that associating with him is worth the (calculated) risk because he, being a human, can help her situation like no one else can.

Arrietty’s open-mindedness shows when she refuses to judge all humans by the few who are evil (like Haru); in her successful befriending of Shawn, she shows a theme of the movie.

A spirited and passionate sometimes-daredevil, Arrietty is all the reason she’s a more powerful borrower because she is motivated by her high degree of familial loyalty and compassion. She is unafraid to speak up and act for what she believes in.

Physical appearance

Arrietty is approximately 4 inches tall. She uses a tiny red clothespin-like object to hold her chestnut hair back when she is adventuring, and after she finds her pin, she carries it everywhere, along with her lasso and satchel. She has dark eyes and light skin.

While she has several outfits, including several that are never worn but are seen spread out on her bed (for example, there is a green jumpsuit with long pants and tons of pockets), Arrietty’s favorites seem to be two comfortable red dresses, one with a turtleneck collar and long sleeves, and one with a nicked collar and short sleeves. She wears brown boots with them. When she is not borrowing or traveling, she wears a yellow dress with a copper top and copper shoes.

Powers and Abilities

Arrietty and her family have to be very resourceful if they are to survive in their little unconnected world where goods are made only for «Beans» (humans). So they use staples as ladder rungs and tape stickers as climbing devices, and when Arrietty finds a pin in the kitchen of Aunt Jessica’s house, she immediately sees its potential as a sword.

This is Arrietty’s weapon of choice, and not only is it a symbol of her ascension from «Daughter of Borrower» to «Borrower,» but it’s also very useful; she uses it to cut the saran wrap on top of the jar her mother is trapped in, and thus successfully complete the rescue mission.

She is also seen using a green spoon (before she finds the pin) to ward off a cockroach larger than she.

When Shawn is locked into his room by Haru, Arrietty displays her resourcefulness by getting out onto the roof, squeezing through the window to a different room, climbing up the curtain with human earrings as hooks, and pushing the window latch open, thus allowing both Shawn and herself to get into the rest of the house to find Homily.

None of this intelligence, though, would be useful without Arrietty’s adventurous nature and courage—she seeks a more interesting and fulfilling life, and if it means competing with grasshoppers for nuts and flowers or risking the dangers of human interaction to save her mother, then so be it. Arrietty is a hero.

This is has the classic Ghibli signatures but with a certain beautiful mellowness that seems to be first-time director Hiromasa Yonebayashi’s own distinct contribution. I haven’t read the Mary Norton book this was adapted from, but this movie recaptured the special, secretive feeling of Enid Blyton books from my childhood.

Studio Ghibli have been responsible for some of my favourite animated movies, especially Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Grave of the Fireflies, Castle in the Sky and My Neighbour Totoro. In fact I haven’t seen a Ghibli I dislike, even their weakest Tales from Earthsea while problematic is worth a viewing. Arietty is not one of Ghibli’s best, but that doesn’t stop it from being a truly charming film. As with all Studio Ghibli’s work, the visuals are stunning, with the colours especially having such an ethereal quality to them, and the music has a pleasant Celtic lilt making the movie even more beautiful than it already is. The script amused and touched me, and the storytelling doesn’t rely on wisecracks and action(not that it’s a bad thing as such) but instead it is subtle and gentle with a lot of charm and heart, letting us bond emotionally with the characters and their world. True, the ending is a little bittersweet, but considering the storytelling it worked I felt. The characters, especially Arietty, are likable and engaging, and the voice work is terrific, the standouts being Olivia Colman, Geraldine McEwan, Mark Strong and very talented child actress Saoirse Ronan. The movie doesn’t try to go beyond being a cute and family-friendly story, and I think it works well for this type of story. I haven’t seen much (if any off the top of my head) from Studio Ghibli that isn’t Hayao Miyazaki. This felt right in that wheelhouse though. It’s gorgeously animated, features a fantastical concept, and has a heartwarming story at the center.

The Secret World of Arrietty’s charm lies in its pace. The film moves at an unhurried speed, one that appeals to a young audience and remains fresh in the minds of an older one. Hiromasa Yonebayashi, the director, skillfully utilizes sound and picture to create a satisfying product. Scenes are visually stimulating and the auditory affects are crisp and pleasing. The story follows Arrietty, a small «borrower,» and Sho, a young boy who meets and protects the borrowers from his wicked aunt. Sho has moved in with his aunt so he can rest and recover from his heart’s sickness whilst Arrietty is learning how to adventure and provide for her family. The lovely soundtrack, voicing, and storyline all culminate in one particularly memorable scene. Sho, who can barely walk due to his condition, helps save Arrietty and her mother in a rather epic journey across his aunt’s property. This scene is cut perfectly, animated vividly, and voiced with such emotion. It is the most grand and true-to-its-maker’s clip the film has to offer.

Так, по пути следования к реке семья встречает одного тануки, другого сказочного персонажа из фильма «Война тануки в периоды Хэйсэй и Помпоко». Arrietty or The Secret World of Arrietty (original title: 借りぐらしのアリエッティ, Kari-gurashi no Arietti) is a 2010 animated film from Studio Ghibli. Written by Hayao Miyazaki and Keiko Niwa after Mary Norton’s books The Borrowers, the film is directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi.

The film tells the story of Arrietty, a young Borrower who lives under the floorboards of a typical household. She eventually befriends Shō, a human boy with a heart condition since birth who is living with his great aunt Sadako. When Sadako’s maid Haru becomes suspicious of the floorboard’s disturbance, Arrietty and her family must escape detection, even if it means leaving their beloved home.

The story takes place in 2010 in Koganei, western Tokyo, and like the novel revolves around a group of «tiny people» who are 10 cm tall and live under the floorboards of a typical human household.

A boy named Shō arrives at the house his mother lived in as a child, to live with his great aunt Sadako. When Shō leaves the car, he sees a cat trying to attack something in the bushes, but the cat leaves after being attacked by a crow. Shō goes to see what the cat was trying to attack. He then sees a Borrower named Arrietty.

That night Arrietty’s father Pod takes Arrietty above the floorboards to Shōw her how he gets sugar. Their first stop is the kitchen, then they walk within a wall to reach a dollhouse in Shō’s bedroom, to get tissue. Before Arrietty and Pod can leave, Arrietty notices Shō is awake, and accidentally drops the sugar cube they got. Shō tells them not to be afraid of him.

The next day, Shō leaves the dropped sugar cube beside an underground air vent where he first saw Arrietty, but Arrietty’s mother Homily warns them not to take it because their existence must be kept secret from humans. Still, Arrietty sneaks out to visit Shō in his bedroom, and the two become friends. On her return, Arrietty is intercepted by her father. Pod and Homily realize they have been discovered, and decide the family must move out of the house.

Shō learns from Sadako that his ancestors have seen Borrowers in this house, and they had the dollhouse made especially for the Borrowers, with working electric lights and ovens. However, the Borrowers had not been seen since, and the dollhouse stayed in Shō’s room. Shō uncovers the floorboards above the Borrower household, uproots their kitchen and replaces it with the kitchen from the dollhouse.

Pod returns injured from a borrowing mission, helped by Spiller, a Borrower boy he met on the way. Spiller suggests some places the Borrowers can move to, and, after he recovers, Pod goes to check them out. Arrietty goes to say goodbye to Shō. During their subsequent conversation Shō theorises that the Borrowers are becoming extinct, which hurts Arrietty. Apologising, Shō reveals he has had a heart condition since birth, and will have an operation in a few days. The operation does not have a good chance of success.

Meanwhile Haru, Sadako’s maid, notices the floorboards have been disturbed. While Sadako is out, Haru locks Shō in his room, unearths the Borrowers’ house and puts Homily in a jar in the kitchen. Haru calls a pest removal company to smoke out the Borrowers and bring them to her alive. When Arrietty returns to find Homily missing and their house disturbed, she goes to Shō for help. Arrietty helps Shō break out of his locked room, Shō then carries Arrietty to the kitchen and distracts Haru while Arrietty rescues Homily. Sadako returns soon after the pest removal company comes, and tells them to leave. Haru tries to prove to Sadako the Borrowers really exist, but Homily has escaped, and there is nothing below the floorboards: The Borrowers have already set off on their move, and Shō has destroyed the remains.

The Borrowers stop for dinner during their move, and Shō’s cat spots Arrietty. The cat brings Shō to Arrietty. He gives her a sugar cube as a parting gift, and tells her the Borrowers’ fight for survival has given him hope to live through the operation, which will happen in two days’ time. In return, Arrietty gives Shō her hairclip. The Borrowers board a teapot, which Spiller steers down a river.

Ghibli announced the film in late 2009 with Yonebayashi making his directorial debut as the youngest director of a Ghibli film. Miyazaki supervised the production as a developing planner. The voice actors were approached in April 2010, and Cécile Corbel wrote the film’s score as well as its theme song.

Released in Japan on July 17, 2010, The Secret World of Arrietty received critical acclaim, all of whom praised the animation and music. It also became the highest grossing Japanese film at the Japanese box office for the year 2010, and is currently grossing over US$126 million worldwide.

The film also won the Animation of the Year award at the 34th Japan Academy Prize award ceremony.

Hayao Miyazaki is one of Japan’s most beloved animation directors. His first feature, The Castle of Cagliostro, was released in 1979. His film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, based on his own manga, was released in 1984. In 1985, Miyazaki cofounded Studio Ghibli, through which he directed the box office smashes Princess Mononoke (1997) and Spirited Away (2001), which won the Golden Bear at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival and the Academy Award® for Best Animated Feature Film in 2003. Howl’s Moving Castle (2004) received the Osella Award for technical achievement at the 2004 Venice International Film Festival. I’m not especially a fan of animated movies, and have only seen a small handful of anime productions. So it came as a very unexpected surprise to discover that I absolutely loved this movie. It just seemed to get everything pretty much right. The visual artistry was quite beautiful, with a great deal of invention in the scenes where the little Borrowers navigate through the wide expanses of the house they live underneath. The music was quite stunningly appropriate, with the lilting Celtic sound just perfect in tone for this melancholic story, with some lovely vocal work too. And these images and sounds were combined together into a simple narrative that had an enormous amount of heart to it. I felt a warm buzz long after leaving the theatre. The Borrower Arrietty is a beautiful film. I cannot really find fault with it. So from this reviewer who has very limited knowledge of anime I give it a near perfect nine. This was stunning. I saw it just days after going to the Ghibli Museum in Japan, and it was breathtaking. I’m glad since I loathed the last Ghibli film I saw (Pom Poko). Arriety is the exact cure needed for such loud and obnoxious 3D CGI movies that come out every other week. It’s quiet and full of soul. There are moments here that you wouldn’t even get in a live action movie. Subtle moments of life and nature, that the animators could have saved time and money by not including them. Luckily for us, the details are all present. A shot lingers just long enough for a ladybird to take flight, or the mother to stir her tea after a conversation. What Ghibli understand, more than anyone, is that kids don’t need bright/crass/non stop films. The quiet nature of Arriety is so relaxing, with gorgeous music from Cecile Corbel. First time director Yonebayashi shows that Ghibli has much more life and talent to give. I was very familiar with The Borrowers, and was a bit disappointed I was getting something original from Ghibli. I’d already seen the excellent TV Mini-series and the over-the-top American film with Goodman. Ghibli have taken everything great about the story, and toned down the designs and motives, making this a realistic and engaging fantasy. The father is stoic and caring. Arriety is adventurous, but never annoying. Her heart is in the right place, but she doesn’t get into a ridiculous amount of trouble. Being Ghibli we get a lovely little cat character, Niya. The designs are ace, and the world of the borrowers and the human beans merge beautifully. A «smaller-scale» Ghibli movie than what we’re used to, but a good one. The Secret World of Arrietty is the story of a family of «borrowers» a tiny race of people who live within the homes of ordinary humans and who are supposed to stay hidden from them at all times. It’s visually as beautiful as you’d expect from Ghibli, with even simple backgrounds looking as lovely as a painting. Instead of the fantastical lands of most Ghibli films like Spirited Away or Howl’s Moving Castle, The Secret World of Arrietty is set in an ordinary home. But the simple beauty of everything and seeing the lovingly-drawn detail in everyday items from the view of smaller eyes makes this one of the more memorable Ghibli movies from a visual standpoint, in my opinion. As for the story, it’s simple and effective, and deals with nothing more than the human occupants of a home, including a young boy with a heart condition, and the family of borrowers that also lives there unknown. Arrietty herself, the daughter of the family of tiny people, continues the tradition of fantastic female characters that comes from Studio Ghibli. This isn’t an action-packed movie with a grand climax or anything like that, but I found it satisfying and pleasantly watchable. Arrietty left me with good feelings and avoided being heavy-handed with messages as some Ghibli movies can tend to do. I liked it a lot (better than Howl’s Moving Castle and Tales from Earthsea, if not quite as much as Ponyo), and I’ll be happily seeing it again at the theater when it comes out in the U.S. In Tokyo, the boy Sho has a heart condition and is neglected by his parents. He moves to the house of his Aunt Sadako and her housemaid Haru to wait for a heart surgery, but he is depressed with the absence of his mother. Meanwhile the fourteen-year-old Arrietty lives on the underground of Sadako’s house with her father Pad and her hysterical mother Homily. They are Borrowers, tiny people that collect simple things they need in the house. Sho sees Arrietty on the garden and during the night, she participates for the first time of a harvest with her father. Arrietty accidentally drops a sugar cube in Sho’s bedroom, but on the next morning Sho leaves the cube near a window in the basement. Arrietty’s parents decide to move to another place since they have been discovered by an inhabitant of the house. But there is the menace of Haru that wants to capture the tiny people. «Kari-gurashi no Arietti» is a beautiful and melancholic tale of friendship between different ones. Arrietty is a lovely and sweet character and it is impossible not falling in love with her. The conclusion is open despite the message of hope, since the fates of Sho and Arrierry and her family are inconclusive. We hope that the boy recovers from his heart surgery and Arriety and her parents find a new home. My vote is seven. Arrietty is the cinematic equivalent of whatever one believes to be the definition of ‘beautiful’. Hiromasa Yonebayashi’s animation, aided by manga artist, film director and animator Hayao Miyazaki, swallows the screen in a sea of plush foliage, raindrops and climbing vine. Every individual item is intrinsically detailed from a microscopic teapot to a leaf swaying in the wind. The artistic nature of Arrietty is a marvel of dedication and effort. This film is certainly the best animated film of 2011. Furthermore, the film features rounded and wonderful characters, all of whom have an important role to play. Arrietty is a great role model for children, particularly young girls. She cares and wants to support her family, she’s strong, hard-working, determined and she isn’t prejudiced. She understands Shô and learns to enjoy his company. Regardless of the reality, the film’s heroine provides plenty of positive energy and a great moral compass. Even when this movie wasn’t directed by Hayao Miyazaki, it has all the wonderful qualities present in the movies from that filmmaker, such as the splendid animation (Having special detail on the sceneries, which are a incredible form of art) interesting characters and charming story, filled with many sweet and tender scenes that aren’t corny or forced. «The Secret World of Arrietty» is a nice anime film for the whole family, and it could be compared to other masterpieces from the Studio Ghibli, such as «Whisper of the Heart» and «My Neighbor Totoro». It is immensely enjoyable from beginning to end, and I highly recommend it to anyone. Now, unless you live in Japan and actually made it to one of the opening showings, I’m probably the only person reading this who has watched Arrittey so far. As such, I’m going to try my best to review the movie without giving any real spoilers away. And the first thing I have to say is, I thought Arrietty the Borrower was a wonderful movie. The entire film had this amazing feeling of being both unique from other Ghibli movies while still maintaining the parts that make almost all of the Studio’s films so great. On the one hand, it had the huge imagination and fully realized and fantastically detailed world of a Miyazaki movie. On the other hand, it had a unique feeling of bittersweet melancholy and wonderful character interactions somehow unlike most of the films that have come before it. While Miyazaki’s screen writing clearly had some great effects on the movie, I could really feel the new directorial style of Yonebashi shining through. And it was so hard to believe this was his first film; I often feel like I should give Miyazaki Goro some slack for Earthsea because it was his first movie, but Arrietty just seemed so well thought-out and put together comparatively. This really makes me beyond excited to see what Yonebashi does in the future. There are many aspects of the film that deserve mention for how damn well-done they were; the beautiful animation, the strong voice-work, the great characters, the fantastic music. What is easily one of the standout points of the movie was how incredibly immersive the tiny world of the Borrowers was. Every part of their home, located beneath a pile of unused bricks stored under the human house, is made of small everyday items we hardly think about forgot junk that the Borrowers used so well as tools, furniture, decoration, everything. The sheer size of everything in comparison to them is striking, creating a strange world of adventure and dangers that are really just the most common, ignored of things to us humans. Perhaps my favorite scene is one where, very mild spoilers here, Arrietty’s father takes her borrowing for the first time. They walk nimbly across nails sticking out from the foundations of the building, use construction staples as ladders, bouldering over the (to them) boulder sized junk lost between the walls of the house. Far bellow a few mice, the size of lions, scurry in the gloom, their eyes burning red. When Arrietty and her father final exit from between the walls into the darkened kitchen at night, the sheer enormity of the room, the intense sound of the looming and massive refrigerator, the sheer walls that compromise the sides of cabinets, they all take the breath out of both Arrietty and the viewer. That entire scene, where they use ingeniously use tiny household items to scale the counters to raid for sugar cubes a third their size, is simply amazing to watch. So many magical scenes like this made up the entire movie, but that was perhaps the best of them all. The characters are for the most part wonderful as well, though in some ways more subdued than Miyazaki tends to make his own. Arrietty is another in the long line of string Ghibli heroines, but like all of them manages somehow to be unique and wonderful all by herself. She’s a young girl who’s confident, kind, and capable, but is still unsure of herself at time. Sho, the young human she meets and the other main character, is a very strong character as well, his weak body and strong spirit in conflict, with a air or both peace and melancholy about him (like much of the movie, really). Another one of my favorites was Arrietty’s father, who was both strong and quite, but in his own gruff way very kind and a great father. The rest of the cast is very good, though not quite as memorable. As for the music for by Cécile Corbel, I’ll admit that at first I was a little skeptical, but in the end the music fit the movie incredibly well and became another fantastic Ghibli soundtrack (which says something when you’re included in the ranks among Hisaishi Joe). I love Celtic music myself, but those without that bias (the other 10 people I went with) all thought the music was one of the high points in a movie with a lot of really good points to discuss. This really was an amazing first outing for Yonebashi as a director, and really one hell of a movie. My only complaints are that perhaps at times it seemed to slow down during the second half, but in the end it turned out so well I can hardly fault it for that. The movie had a sort of bittersweet feel that I really can’t think of another Ghibli movie to compare to. Sad, joyous, and beautiful, Arrietty the Borrower is the newest Ghibli classic. Review Theatrical Edition At this point, the classic children’s novel The Borrowers has been adapted a whole bunch of times – for television, film, comics, you name it – all to varying degrees of success. The Secret World of Arrietty is Studio Ghibli ‘s attempt to take a stab at it, enlisting relative newcomer Hiromasa Yonebayashi to helm the film with the legendary Hayao Miyazaki providing the script. The result is a beautiful, carefully detailed and altogether pleasant wisp of a film that does absolutely everything – from the characters’ personalities to the story construction to the emotional stakes that hold the whole thing together – in miniature. The story opens with the eager and resourceful 14-year old Arrietty going on her first “Borrowing” – that is, her first foray with her stoic father into the dangerous human dwelling above to retrieve some sugar and tissue from the humans, things they need to “borrow” to make ends meet in their rustic little house under the floorboards. It’s a charming sequence, and we learn everything we need to know (and will ever know) about Arrietty and her parents right up front; Arrietty is strong-willed and capable, her father is the soft-spoken man of duty who looks out for his family, and mom is always in the kitchen, worrying endlessly about everyone’s safety in an environment where fear keeps them from interacting much with the world upstairs. Arrietty is discovered by Shawn, who catches them trying to pilfer a sheet of tissue paper, and immediately calls out in sympathy – he wants to be friends, but Arrietty has been taught to fear humans, and stays away. Of course, that doesn’t last long, and soon the two are learning that they aren’t so different, what with Shawn dealing with his own mortality and Arrietty wrestling with the notion that she and her folks may be the last of their kind. The central conflict in the film is as light as all of its other components – the “villain”, aging busybody Hara, sees the Borrowers (which have lived on in the house in legends for generations) as nothing but little thieves. She calls an exterminator to trap them, having discovered their little house, capturing Arrietty’s mom in the process. By the time this section of the story kicks in, Arrietty has befriended the ailing Shawn and they go on a particularly short rescue mission. That’s about it. There aren’t any other twists and turns in the story – we’re made aware of the existence of other Borrowers by the appearance of Spiller, a forest-dwelling Borrower who speaks in a generic “savage” dialect; he lets the family know they can go upriver and join the rest of their kind. It all wraps up with a brief emotional moment between Shawn and Arrietty that doesn’t quite feel earned – they become fast friends, Shawn helps her out, and boom, we’re done, roll credits. It’s hard to fault The Secret World of Arrietty for feeling so light and small – that is, after all, clearly what it’s aiming for, at least in terms of story scope. The problem, if it can be called that, arises when the film never fully connects with you or engages you beyond invoking the same fleeting sense of familiar comfort you might get from a warm cup of tea or a kitty in your lap. The characters are all drawn particularly thin – Arrietty doesn’t change beyond learning that this one human she met once was a good guy, and Shawn claims Arrietty taught him to be brave in the face of his upcoming surgery, but we’re never really shown the emotional connective tissue to support that. Hara’s machinations feel particularly bloodless; even when she’s kidnapping mom, there’s no real sense of peril. The whole thing is like a very pretty balloon you hold on to for a second before it floats away; a nice little memory you may one day recollect for an instant before it wanders back into the ether. The film likely would’ve been helped if it’d been given a little more breathing room. The story itself, minus credits, is barely 90 minutes, one of the shortest of Ghibli’s theatrical offerings; as a result of that and the way the script is constructed, we’re given very little time to get to know any of these characters and very little backstory is provided. Even a few more minutes of character building would’ve really helped create the sort of emotional resonance we’ve seen from countless other Ghibli works. There isn’t really even much of a theme here, which is odd for a Miyazaki script – there’s a brief hint at a thematic connection between Shawn’s illness and Arrietty’s extinction anxiety, but it’s never explored or commented on beyond one scene where it’s sort of explicitly stated by the two leads, and so we’re left with very little to chew on. The Secret World of Arrietty may not have much beyond its effortlessly pleasant surface, and in the end – which comes before you know it – it might feel a little hollow, but it does, at the very least, do a narratively competent and entertaining job retelling a story that holds up as testament to the enduring strength of the source material. Ghibli’s visual prowess is on full display once again, and it does seem like the sort of film older children may hold on to longer than most, thanks to subtle character interaction, mannered pacing and an understated, almost mundane sense of everyday magic. It’s a shame there isn’t more going on here, even when it comes to the film’s basic story, but it’s foolish to deny the simple, warm and familiar pleasures of Arrietty’s world. Her worried mother asks Arriety if she went outside again but is surprised that her room has become a forest. Arriety gives the leaves to her mother as an early birthday gift. Arriety is excited because tonight she going on her first borrowing with her father. When Pod returns and tells them there is a new being the house, Homily becomes hesitant to let her daughter go especially since children are wild, but Arriety wants to go as they promised that this would be her night. Pod lets her come since Sho is sick and tells Homily that Arriety is almost 14 and will be out on her own soon. That night Arrietty’s father Pod takes Arrietty above the floorboards to show her how he gets sugar. Their first stop is the kitchen, then they walk within a wall to reach a dollhouse in Shawn’s bedroom, to get tissue. There is a final monologue in the Disney dub, where Sho states that he never saw Arrietty again and returned to the home a year later, indicating that the operation had been successful. It is my desire that this post will serve as a guide so you can enjoy The Secret World of Arrietty with your children. Read my full disclosure.>> The Secret World of Arrietty: Summary Arrietty is a “borrower”, a tiny human who lives with her parents under the baseboards and borrows what she needs from the humans above. On her very first borrowing, she is seen and addressed by Sho, an ill young man who has come to his grandmother’s house to convalesce with rumors of the little people his mother claims to have seen. How will this unexpected encounter transform them both? The Secret World of Arrietty: Movie Information Arrietty is an interesting piece in the Studio Ghibli canon. Like Howl’s Moving Castle and in contrast to most Studio Ghibli films, it is an adaptation of a Western children’s fantasy novel; in this case, Mary Norton’s The Borrowers. And like The Cat Returns, it was not directed by Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata, the co-founders of Studio Ghibli. Instead, this film was the directorial debut of one of their long-time animators, Hiromasa Yonebayashi, who contributed to nine previous Studio Ghibli films including Howl’s Moving Castle and Ponyo. Yonebayashi would go on to direct two more films for Studio Ghibli before joining Studio Ponoc. Arrietty is also unique in that there is no magic. In fact, there’s almost nothing objectionable to mention–no magic, no violence, no blood, no cursing, no smoking or drinking. There are only three things I feel discerning parents should be aware of: two startling moments of unexpected loud sounds (one as Arrietty is talking with Sho in the window; another when Pod is making a basket); Sho says at one point that he’s dying (although he doesn’t die on-screen); and one frightening moment when Homily is abducted with a lot of screaming. On the whole, this is an immersive and gentle adventure with just enough plot to stay engaged but no thrills or intensity that children as young as age 5 could enjoy. As different as it may seem from other Studio Ghibli films, at its heart is a familiar core. The movie is absolutely gorgeous to look at, a real visual feast. The aesthetics are at once masterful and inviting, cozily European inspired but bursting with nature. Arrietty is a strong, brave heroine who faces her challenge (trusting and communicating with someone very different than herself) and triumphs. In my opinion, the best part of this film is the delightful, magical sense of scale — seeing familiar objects rendered huge. Spoons the size of a man, a sugar cube as big as a package, a straight pin for a sword, flowers for trees, a refrigerator transformed into an immeasurable mountain. Even as an adult, these scenes provoked a child-like sense of wonder, and I’m sure it will be rich fodder for your family’s imagination. Highly recommended. The Secret World of Arrietty Review Studio Ghibli’s take on Mary Norton’s classic story The Borrowers is a sweet and charming little film about little people. Now the studio has turned to Mary Norton’s classic children’s book The Borrowers for its latest film, The Secret World of Arrietty. While it isn’t quite as grand in scope as some of the movies listed above, it’s still a lovely film with a gentle soul that is made in a way that only Studio Ghibli can produce. Arrietty Clock is a spirited young girl who lives with her parents within the floorboards and cracks of large estate home in the country. No, this isn’t an Inglourious Basterds-type situation. Arrietty and her parents are Borrowers – a miniscule race of people who survive by living below humans and ‘borrowing’ the things that they’re unlikely to miss. A cube of sugar here and a piece of cheese there are just enough for this family to stay alive and out of harm’s way. Arrietty shows her pin-sword to her mother. The Clock family have been living in the same spot for years and have grown comfortable of their little home. Being a restless teenage girl that yearns for adventure, Arrietty begs her parents to go on a scavenging mission with her father. Her mother begrudgingly allows her to go, and soon the father and daughter set off to round up some supplies. Arrietty accidently comes face to face with a sick, human boy named Sho that has just moved into the home, and while she tries to avoid his ensuing attempts to make contact with her, eventually the lonely pair forms a friendship. It’s not long however, before Sho’s cruel caretaker cottons on to these tiny house-crashers and the family’s sanctuary gets turned upside down. The world of the Borrowers is quite adorable, with many of the cute, little touches that are a hallmark of Studio Ghibli’s films littered througout. It’s impossible to watch Arrietty’s mother pour singular drops of tea that fill entire miniature teacups and not feel your heart go all warm. Same goes for the sewing pin that Arrietty uses as a sword. Director Hiromasa Yonebayashi uses scale to great effect, and it gives the film a wondrous sense of charm. Part of the reason that Arrietty works so well is due to how vulnerable the characters of the Clock family are, and the way that the film has you constantly worrying about their safety. They’re so tiny and fragile that you can’t help but feel for them when Sho’s caretaker starts trying to uproot their whole existence. A lot of it is due to the well-realised and likeable characters, and the actors bringing them to life. Arrietty and Sho, hanging out in the garden. It must be noted that the version I watched was had a U.K. English dubbing, featuring wonderful performances from accomplished actors Saoirse Ronan as Arrietty, Mark Strong as her father, Olivia Colman as her mother and Tom Holland as Sho. It has come to my attention that the U.S. version will receive its own dubbing featuring American accents, with comedic actors such as Will Arnett and Amy Poehler standing in for Arrietty’s parents. I have no idea what that version is like, but I must say that if pressed to think of who Mark Strong’s American counterpart might be, the last person I would ever think of is Will Arnett. It’s kind of puzzling that a second English dub has been created for the film, but having not seen the other version I can’t begin to comment on whether it was necessary. If I were to have a guess, I would say that these comedic actors were brought in to make the film a bit funnier and more energetic, but that would just a guess. Complementing the film is a rich and beautiful score by Cecile Corbel, which perfectly encapsulates the feeling of the film. It is moving and stirring, and will hopefully not be forgotten come awards time. It’s really that good. Much like a lot of the characters it portrays, this is a slight film. While just as enchanting and lovely as you’d expect from Studio Ghibli, Arrietty’s story is of a smaller scale. This isn’t a story about dragons or spirits or other fantastical elements – it’s more traditional. It’s a quiet and small story about a blossoming friendship. While this is a deeply rewarding film, people with short attention spans might not get as much out of it.
