Студия Disney анонсировала свой следующий мультфильм — доступен первый кадр

В новом анимационном фильме главные герои отправятся исследовать неизведанный мир.

Кинокомпания Disney раскрыла первую информацию о своем новом анимационном фильме, премьера которого намечена на следующий ноябрь и приурочена к национальному празднику — Дню благодарения. Лента получила название Strange World («Странный мир»).

Анонсом мультфильма поделился Instagram-аккаунт Walt Disney Animation Studios, разместив также первый кадр, где показана некая неизведанная планета с удивительной флорой и фауной. В центре сюжета — семья исследователей по фамилии Клэйдс, чьи разногласия едва не стали причиной провала их сверхважной миссии. Проект описывается как «глубокое погружение в неизведанную и коварную землю, где ждут фантастические существа».

Режиссером выступит Дон Холл, получивший «Оскар» за «Город героев» и выпустивший весной этого года «Райю и последнего дракона». Его коллега по «Райе и последнему дракону» Ки Нгуйен стал соавтором сценария. Продюсером анимационного фильма заявлен Рой Конли, также работавший над «Городом героев». Актерский состав, который озвучит персонажей «Странного мира», пока не анонсирован.

Студия Disney регулярно выпускает новые анимационные ленты, приурочив их ко Дню благодарения. В разные годы в конце ноября выходили «Холодное сердце» и «Холодное сердце 2», «Тайна Коко», «Моана», а в 2021-м в праздничный уик-энд стартовал «Энканто» — музыкальный фильм о необычной колумбийской семье.

Первый тизер Strange World — ретрофутуристического приключения Disney

Disney показал первый тизер приключенческого мультфильма Strange World про, собственно, удивительный мир, куда попадает семья путешественников. Тизер стилизован под «палп»-журналы с их характерными шрифтами и подачей.

Действие мультфильма развернётся в глубинах странного мира, затерянного, судя по всему, в пространстве и времени. Главного героя — сына известного исследователя — озвучит Джейк Джилленхол.

Режиссёр — Дон Холл («Райя и Последний дракон», «Моана»), вторым режиссёром и сценаристом выступает Ки Нгуйен («Райя и Последний дракон»).

Премьера запланирована на 23 ноября. Увидим ли её в российских кинотеатрах, пока неизвестно.

Обзор нового сериала во вселенной Star Trek. Каким вышел проект Strange New Worlds?

Вселенная, созданная Джином Родденберри в невероятно далеких 60-х продолжает жить, приобретя поистине культовый статус. Star Trek (Звездный Путь) находит все новых и новых поклонников в каждом новом поколении. А новые проекты появляются на экранах с заметной регулярностью. Последним таким проектом на данный момент стал сериал Star Trek Strange New Worlds (Странные новые миры). Вчера я посмотрел его и мне есть, что о нем сказать.

О сериале

Данный проект является одновременно как спин-оффом Discovery (Дискавери), так и приквелом к оригинальному сериалу. Сюжет разворачивается спустя несколько месяцев после событий второго сезона Дискавери и за 7-10 лет до оригинального сериала. Главным героем же выступает капитан USS Enterprise (Энтерпрайз) Кристофер Пайк. Он был капитаном Энтерпрайза, перед тем как этот пост занял легендарный Джеймс Т. Кирк.

В ходе событий второго сезона Дискавери, основной сюжет которого крутился вокруг временных путешествий, Пайк заглянул в своё будущее. Там он увидел то, что с ним случится. Через 10 лет он должен пожертвовать собой во время одной из аварий, дабы спасти кадетов. После чего остаться в инвалидной коляске, будучи полностью беспомощным. Такая судьба напугала Кристофера, и он решил уйти со службы. Однако из-за одного инцидента, ему пришлось вернуться. И теперь он должен решить, примет ли он свою судьбу, или же нет?

Как в старые добрые?

Очень многие поклонники Звездного Пути довольно сильно критикуют последние проекты вселенной. Сильнее всего досталось Дискавери, как не странно. Многие считают, что эти проекты далеки по духу и тому смыслу, который в них закладывал сам Джин Родденберри. И в целом, с этим можно согласиться. Хоть я и считаю такие изменения в каком-то смысле необходимыми, факт есть факт. Более подробно об этом я говорил в отдельном топике.

С выходом Странных Новых Миров, я несколько раз слышал мнение о том, что этот проект довольно сильно отличается от прочих современных. Якобы создатели смогли вернуть дух старого Звездного Пути, избавившись от всех современных тенденций (и я вовсе не про повесточку). И отчасти это так. Сам сериал, как это было и раньше, во многом концентрируется на исследовании, философии и психологии, вместо экшена (хотя он тут тоже есть). Здесь присутствует несколько классических для вселенной героев, таких как Спок, Ухура, Кирк. И сериал даже умудряется не испортить их образ, что уже похвально.

Структура

Но со всем этим возвращением к корням есть одна проблемка. По крайней мере, мне так показалось. Все дело в структуре сюжета. Я уже об этом в целом рассказывал, но повторюсь. Раньше сериалы почти всегда выходили в формате, напоминающим новеллы. Каждый новый эпизод рассказывал свою отдельную историю, а где-то между всем этим мелькали и нотки основной сюжетной линии. Или не мелькали, когда как. Сейчас же такой подход используется крайне редко. Вместо этого же, сериалы все больше и больше концентрируются на одном сюжете, выдавая его разом и почти без излишеств.

И проблема тут, в количестве эпизодов. В формате новелл зачастую подразумевал немалое число серий в сезоне. Как минимум около 20-и, а иногда и больше. Концентрированный же формат в целом содержит от 6 до 10 эпизодов в сезоне. Иногда 12. И вся соль в том, что создатели Странных Новых Миров, по всей видимости, решили поэкспериментировать. В этом сериале используется именно что формат новелл, но содержит он всего 10 серий. Основной сюжет здесь хоть и есть, но его крайне мало. Из 10-и эпизодов, всего 2 полноценно ему посвящены. Остальные же по большей части сосредоточены на своих отдельных историях, хоть и имеют пересечения. И так уж вышло, что по окончанию сериала, лично мне было тупо мало. И основного сюжета, который уместился в чуть более чем полтора часа, и отдельных историй, которых было всего 8 штук.

Кристофер Пайк

Тем не менее, несмотря на это, лично мне было интересно наблюдать за образом Пайка. Прежде это был один из самых наименее раскрытых героев вселенной. И это при условии, что именно Кристофер Пайк изначально был главным героем самого первого эпизода Звездного Пути в принципе. А все, что нам рассказали потом, так это как Пайк пожертвовал собой, и что с ним стало в итоге. Этот же сериал взялся исправлять этот промежуток в лоре вселенной, исследуя и раскрывая капитана Кристофера Пайка.

И в целом, я доволен тем, что увидел. Образ Пайка изначально мне напомнил Кирка. Такой же свой рубаха-парень, который в нужный момент может, как и суровым капитаном стать, так и пренебречь правилами. Однако последний эпизод изменил мое мнение. Сейчас я склоняюсь к тому, что Пайк это что-то среднее между Кирком и Пикаром, где первый это сорвиголова, а второй старается чтить каждую букву закона.

Заключение

Проект Star Trek Strange New Worlds получился весьма интересным. Духовно он пытается косить под оригинальные сериалы, при этом сохраняя весь лоск современных проектов. Получается ли это у него? Отчасти. Несмотря на то, что самих серий очень мало, большинство из них получились качественными. Хотя есть и парочка дурацких, от этого никуда не деться. Лично мне очень понравился эпизод со спасением мальчика. Если смотрели или будете смотреть, то поймете о чем я. Хоть эксперименты с форматом это как раз то, что лично мне не понравилось, думаю, большинству этот сериал придется по вкусу. Особенно, если вы любите оригинальные проекты вселенной.

После просмотра пяти серий остаюсь в довольно смешанных чувствах до сих пор не понимая дали ли нам наконец что-то хотя бы отдаленно похоже на каноничные треки, или же это очередная пустышка. Содержит минорные некритичные спойлеры.

Дальше идет непонятная встреча с преступником который хочет говорить только с одним конкретным человеком и которого в итоге все равно вырубают просто ударом в лицо, который мог сделать абсолютно любой сотрудник местного МВД и не беспокоить по этому поводу больших шишек которые вообще не должны заниматься поимкой преступников.

Корабельные врачи оказывающиеся беспомощными при отключении корабельного оборудования и выставляющие как небывалое достижение зашивание раны обычной ниткой. Или ситуация когда доктора только под конец вспоминают что вообще-то можно делиться и своей кровью тоже так же не прибавляет репутации ЗФ с его вроде бы как высокими стандартами.

И из таких мелких недоработок собраны все первые серии.

Но, ладно, на самом деле так прикопаться можно много к чему, но положительные моменты могут вполне это компенсировать. Посмотрим что с остальным.

Основное за что любят прошлые треки это не космические пострелушки и даже не Спок с Дейтой или Девятой, хотя они конечно в этот успех тоже привнесли немало, основная причина популярности в классных самостоятельных сериях где сериал поднимал действительно взрослые сложные темы или целые концепции умея их очень хорошо раскрывать. И давать зрителю не жвачку с готовой моралью, а именно пищу для размышлений. Простым языком показывать сложные вещи, поднимать остросоциальные темы, с иных ракурсов рассматривать вопросы человеческих отношений, эмпатии и т.д. и т.п.

В принципе было бы странно хотеть подобного сразу с первых серий которые обычно лишь знакомят зрителя с командой, и собственно этого и не случилось. Некоторые проблески я уже начинаю видеть и лишь пока понадеюсь что у создателей в рукаве есть не только модная графика которая для подобного проекта вообще вторична.

Главное что это вообще есть, есть исследования, есть дух исследований, есть знакомство с неопознанным и попытки собственно его познать. Однозначно в плюсик, особенно на фоне Дискавери и Пикара.

Про персонажей сказать нечего кроме того что они вообще есть. Я бы сказал пока что ни один их них еще толком не сформировал себя как полноценного персонажа а капитан к пятой серии до сих пор остается статистом который действует как ИИ и по сути не имеет собственного характера. Если раньше мы всей компанией обучали человеческому поведению Дейту, Доктора и Девятую, то в этом сериале похоже будем обучать капитана. Причем задачка будет та еще ибо он отлично научился мимикрировать под человеков.

Ну а если серьезно то к концу показанных серий он вроде начал уже действовать хоть как-то самостоятельно и подавать голос, внушает надежду.

Остальные пока ничем особо не привлекают, просто какие-то персонажи, потенциально перспективные, но требующие раскрытия. И не такого офигенного раскрытия как Пайк который в первой серии испытывал ужас видений своего будущего а через тридцать минут забил болт, и не такого как Ухура которая за еще меньшее время внезапно осознала свое предназначение и жизненные цели, а чего-нибудь в духе старых треков когда линии персонажей и их проблемы тянулись сквозь целые сезоны органично показывая их развитие.

Тема о которой говорить в принципе не очень хочется, с одной стороны из-за ее заезженности, с другой что все равно ты ничего с этим поделать не можешь.

СЖВ. Оно есть у нас. Не буду ругаться что почему-то наверное процентов 80% в кадре у нас одни девушки и весь мостик забит ими, но хочу отметить что при просмотре не покидала мысль что в 2022 году для репрезентации было бы вполне достаточно уже просто вставлять их в команду без прибабахов и попыток выделить, чтобы были обычные женские персонажи уникальность которых бы раскрывалась уже дальше по сюжету, а не бросалась зрителю в лицо сразу при первом появлении.

В принципе тут изложение мыслей можно было бы и закончить решив для себя что это очередной фейл по СТ, но тем не менее в защиту сериала я не могу сказать что встретил какие-то сильные проблемы которые бы прямо мешали его смотреть. Если дискавери начал плевать на основы уже прямо в первой серии и его сразу хотелось дропнуть, то тут скорее есть просто немного раздражающие моменты и общая нераскрытость идеи, толком непонятно даже что хотят делать сами создатели и пока что мне все еще интересно дать ему некоторый кредит доверия. Пару раз улыбнулся, картинка приятная, визуальный дизайн несколько стерилен имхо, но красив и даже имеет прям эпичные виды. Актерская игра хоть и не выдающаяся, пока, но и в прошлых сериалах актеры раскрывались вот вообще ни разу не с самого начала. Та же Джадзия по моему только к третьему сезону начала осознавать что она вообще делает на площадке.

В конце концов вояджер я бросал на первом сезоне и потом возвращался в итоге посчитав для себя лично лучшим сериалом по франшизе. И в свое время чуть было не дропнул DS9 все так же посчитав происходящее в первом сезоне не очень интересным.

Я бы сказал первые сезоны в целом большая проблема многих треков и понадеюсь что так получится и с этим, что как и персонажи поймут что они вообще делают на экране и кого должны играть, так и сценаристы наконец посмотрят уже прошлые треки и попытаются врубиться почему их любят.

Не могу сказать что я доволен, но и точно пока не расстроен, strange new world выглядит как сериал которому я могу дать шанс.

Специально залогинился, чтобы лайк лонгу поставить. Целиком согласен с приведённым мыслями и фактами. Не фанат оригинальных сериалов стартрека, но этот смотрится легко, если ещё заранее мозг отключить. Момент с дырой не понятен и это обидно. Просветите или дайте линк на ютюб, чтобы быстро ознакомиться, что там случилось.

Да, точно, Седьмая.

Главный плюс сериала это то что круто показаны города которые они посещают. Меня всегда смущало в старых Треках эти деревни на каждой планете. А в остальном это нечто среднее между классикой и новыми Треками. Not great, not terrible

Ну чисто гипотетически это офицеры которые могут участвовать в высадках на планеты и оказаться в ситуации когда хай тек недоступен, и емнип в прошлых сериалах такое случалось постоянно. Конечно они там молодцы что в космос летают, но отказываться от обычных ножей глупо.

И это каждый раз было ЧП с драмой, из которого достойно вылезали разве что Башир и Флокс.

Я тут скорее выпал с того что это пихнули прям вот открыто, что у нас оборудование отключилось и мы ничего не можем сделать. Не помню аналогичных ситуаций в прошлых сериалах когда это вот так четко ставилось проблемой, там емнип доктора просто молча пытались справиться тем что есть.

Я из-за такой хрени не люблю читать\смотреть фантастику в принципе (приключенческую по большей части). Понятно что у мед отсека должно быть свое резервное питание, запасное портативное оборудование попроще и куча всего что есть уже *сейчас* в больницах на такие случаи и форс-мажоры. И тем более это должно быть в будущим. С двойных-тройным «запасом». Но нет, мы будем делать драму\двигать сюжет самым тупым способом.

В фентази автор хотя бы может задать «свои» правила и если он сам их не нарушает, то все выглядит более-менее гладко.

Фантастика фантастике рознь, тоже. Оригинальные СТ во многом были чистым фентези и имели кучу условностей, но так как акценты в самом сериале были расставлены на другие вещи то смотреть это не мешало абсолютно.

Например у них там наверное половина ситуаций решалась тупо перенастройкой щитов и выделением дополнительной мощности а система безопасности на корабле работала как будто ее придумывал пятилетний.
Про вечно глючащие голодеки рождающие невозможные ситуации и вовсе промолчу.

я пока 3 серии посмотрел. но сериал чувствуется весьма лёгким,похож на упрощенную версию старого доктора.

Пока он вообще стерильный, уцепиться особо не за что и можно лишь прикидывать перспективы и общее отношение к франшизе.

был момент в в новом поколении когда молодой энсин не знал что делать и тогда глав врач приказала ему наложить шину на переломанную ногу. Такое могут лишь новчики а глав врачи наоборот обязанны знать. Их там специально обучают в зф ситуациям если внезапно отключилось. Что выглядит очень странно. С другой стороны, в оригинально да было. Может это потом ввели с подачи маккоя.

Ну это можно отнести и к моей личной претензии, вопрос был скорее что в прошлых сериалах это не настолько бросалось в глаза или что раньше возможно акценты расставлялись так что я эти мелочи не замечал.

Ну на фоне практически полного отсутствия хоть какой то фантастики, вполне себе норм, картинка приятная. Если вот прям не упарываться и не задаваться вопросами о том, че у них там с теорией относительности и подобными вещами, то вполне себе ок. Прилетели на планетку, произошел ай ай ай, половину серии разбираемся что за ай ай ай, вторую половину ай ай ай героически побеждаем и потому обратно в тардис (зачерктнуто), в энтерпрайз, до следующей серии.

С одной стороны да, с другой бы уже че нить поинтереснее охота

Читаю серию сейчас, там все ок, но я про сериал конкретно) Хотя экпансия тоже вроде как еще поснимается.

Закрыли текущую арку, но вроде писали что могут продолжить со следующих книг. Там как минимум вся линия с девочкой колонисткой явно не просто так вставлена.

Экипажи исследовательских и боевых кораблей, как правило, состоят из представителей различных цивилизаций, чтобы обеспечить достойные результаты всех запланированных командировок. “The Stranger” offers unlimited scenarios: A playing card is chosen, a word is thought of from a Book Test, the numbers from someone’s address are named, an envelope is freely selected, or the name of someone’s loved one is offered…and then, a random stranger is called. The audience has a conversation with the stranger and the stranger reveals the information.

This is an impossible moment. It leaves the audience with a feeling they cannot explain and they erupt in applause! Not out of a desire to be kind, rather as an uncontrollable, visceral reaction. And it happens every time.

This is a light hearted module with focus on romance, story and characters. If you’re a hardcore gamer and think hack and slash and following the rules of D&D to the point is of utmost importance, this may not be for you. It’s set in my custom A Strange World series fantasy worlds.

This module took about 1 year to complete (yes, I’d already worked 6 months on this when ASWIII was released) and then another 6 months of beta testing and waiting for the fixing of animations. A lot of hard work was put into it, so please be kind and respectable if critizising. I’ve really done the best I can, but I’m neither a writer or coder. I do this just as a hobby. NWN2 is a bit buggy still, and everything may not work perfectly all the time. I’ve only used prefab areas (except for one area), just as with my other modules, so the areas have only been modified by me. See further down for details about sources used.

The playing time is about 8-9 hours. This module is set in the Core World, the same as in ASWI.

WARNING : This module contains Adult content. Even if it’s most of the times skippable, don’t play if you are young and uncorrupted. Don’t let your children play it. Mind though, if you think the adult stuff that are part of The Witcher games (and the TV-series) and Game of Thrones is nothing to get upset about, then this won’t upset you either. Patch level 1.23. Requires both extensions MotB and SoZ.

Story Synopsis:

As the son of the hero that defeated the Dorgon Master many years ago (the protagonist of ASWI), you are a student at the Magic Academy in Enzymon, studying plane travel. It’s been two years since you started this journey. Who knows what adventures awaits you.

Installation and instructions:

Read through this! I’m serious. It’s really annoying when people have trouble because they haven’t installed things correctly.

I’m sorry for the extremely large override folder. I’ve downloaded so many things from the vault (I think I’ve downloaded almost every new head there is and all new armors I could find) that I use that I haven’t been able to keep track of what I don’t use in this module, therefore I put everything here to be on the safe side.
(This will change for ucoming modules. I’ve got two more in the works that may or may not be released, no promises.)

So, the first thing you should do is make a backup of your own override folder before putting all the stuff there.

9. When, and if, there’s a patch: Put the content of the compressed file into the ASWIV folder in Campaigns, overwriting the old files.

10. Some have been confused by this being just a module and still it’s a campaign. How does that add up? It IS just a module,
but it is way easier to patch this module by using the «campaign mode» with a campaign folder. If there are problems related
to scripts and conversations that need patching, you won’t have to play from the beginning for it to be fixed. If I didn’t use «campaign mode»,
like ASW1 for example, you would have to play from the beginning when a new patch comes out.

UPDATE: Potential bug: One player reported having trouble with the Fire Elemental Essence quest. If that happens for you, download the potential_bug_spawncreature.zip file, unpack it and follow the instructions in the READ ME file. None of my beta testers had this problem so it might be a one time thing.

Notes about this module:

1. Make sure to save often! NWN2 is still buggy and you never know what might happen.

2. In a few areas at the end of the module, you might be unlucky and experience CTD. If this happens, just reload your latest save and it will probably work. If it doesn’t, try again. It WILL eventually work. This is why it’s so important to save often!

3. One character you can’t level up on your own. That character will automatically level up when you level up your own character. This is because I use a class on that one that you normally can’t use on a player character or companion. I’m sure this will annoy some players, and I’m sorry for that.

4. There’s quite a lot of talking. If you don’t like that, this is not a module for you.

5. Since this is a custom world not everything might work the way you think if you’re an expert on D&D and its rules.

6. When you’ve played for a time you will eventually have three female companions in your party. All these are romancable.

7. There are a few puzzles/riddles in the game. The first one you encounter is quite easy, but the companions won’t help you with it. If you get stuck there, you can always look up the answer on google.

8. If you romance a character, please do not try to romance another at the same time. I don’t think you can romance more than anyone at a time, but I might have missed something with this. It can be quite complicated to prevent this. So if you think it’s fun to break the game, then by all means, but you have been warned. If you ignore this the game might possibly break, things plays out weridly, and in the end and then you might have to replay a large chunk of the module.

9. When I’ve tested the module I’ve always used the Exploration Mode when it comes to camera.

10. I’ve tried to make the fights balanced, but this is very hard. From my beta testers I know that some can be quite hard and others maybe too easy.

From DIY beginnings in McCarthy, to situationism, to establishing the influential Duophonic Records, to influencing future bands like Deerhunter, Lottie Brazier charts the remarkable voyage of one of France and Britain’s most successful co-achievements besides the Channel Tunnel: Stereolab

As Repeater Books’ Post Punk Then And Now describes, the conditions were highly fertile in the early 1980s for radical politics to be expressed through DIY bands. Higher education was fully state funded and this levelled the playing field for many young people in the country at the time who wanted to make art. Bands became their own “world making machines”, opening up ways of having fun with other people that didn’t have to cost much money. Born out of radical leftist Barking-based band McCarthy, the French-British band Stereolab seized on this idea more than most. Guitarist Tim Gane met his Stereolab co-founder and partner, the French singer and multi-instrumentalist Lætitia Sadier through the band. Stereolab was formed during McCarthy’s split in 1990, and from 1993 the band would include the singular, highly inventive guitarist Mary Hansen, one of the band’s longest members who tragically died in a road accident in 2002 after having recorded six albums with them.

Despite their shared leftism, the politics (and the aesthetic reference points) of Stereolab are more finely woven than those you’d find on a McCarthy record. Unlike McCarthy, Stereolab never identified their stance as Marxist, with Lætitia Sadier expressing to press that the Greek-French philosopher Cornelius Castoriadis (a leftist critical of Marxism) was more of an influence on her thinking and lyrics. More outward-facing than McCarthy’s C86 jangle, the music of Stereolab itself contains a melting pot of influences which unfold throughout their discography including (but not limited to) vintage synthesisers, noise, The Beach Boys, Brazilian Tropicalia, surrealism and mod culture.

Their album Cobra And Phases Group Play Voltage In The Milky Night is possibly inspired by situationist avant garde group COBRA and their song lyrics contain numerous allusions to both modernism and post-modernism. Assessment of their lyrics on a philosophical rather than poetic basis is though, admittedly, a bit of a minefield.

Stereolab now appear a precursor to record labels such as PC Music and their artists like Hannah Diamond and SOPHIE’s first singles that tap into a sense of being enclosed in hyper-stylised, queasily reflexive, vacuum packed atmospheres of the consumer “driven” internet and attempting to express what it’s like to be immersed in that. For Hannah Diamond, it’s the state (not even necessarily her state) of being in a teenage bedroom on the internet, scrolling absentmindedly through social media posts, or perhaps speculatively Spotify playlists rife with “chill” muzak now, ironically, popular. By tapping into muzak aka elevator music as a musical reference point long before vapourwave or the Spotify playlist, Stereolab help you to imagine those mundane intermittent episodes of waiting in which it is still occasionally played: lifts, waiting rooms, when you’re told to “please hold” while trying to get in touch with HMRC. Like Jacques Tati’s 1967 comedy PlayTime with its modish cubicle living, Stereolab’s music is haunted by a consumerism and corporatisation waiting to get out of hand.

And by celebrating ghosts of boredoms past, Deerhunter also become natural follow-ons to Stereolab: not only citing them as a direct musical influence, visually they engage with a washed out xerox hauntology that became resurrected through the Retromania of 10s blog culture. Disrupting our sense of time and space, they fixed short-lived memories in a Tumblr GIF loop on songs like ‘Basement Scene’ (“I don’t want to get old, I don’t want to get old, I don’t want to get old…”) and ‘Memory Boy’. Lætitia Sadier was a guest on Atlas Sound’s ‘Quick Canal’, Bradford Cox’s solo project similarly named after vintage music technology. Incidentally, Deerhunter were my introduction to Stereolab, besides a gateway into ambient music and experimental rock bands like Can. I loved Stereolab instantly, which should have been at odds with the fact that it took me a while to warm to the Continental philosophy that inspired them.

After having going on hiatus from roughly 2009 on, Stereolab members have since worked on other projects, such as Tim Gane and Joe Dilworth’s Cavern of Anti-Matter. This year they’re back to together and touring once more, with their Primavera Sound performance being their first since 2009. So what better time than now to acquaint/reacquaint yourself with their discography.

‘Should The Bible Be Banned’ by McCarthy (1988)

As McCarthy’s sixth single, ’Should The Bible Be Banned’ may not be a Stereolab song but it’s an early example of Sadier/Gane sonic forces before they were writing their own material. The song follows the story of a copycat killer following the story of Cain and Abel, forcing a Plato’s Republic-esque ethical dilemma onto the public of whether Bible should be banned if it is going to inspire future similar acts of homicide. In an interview with Louder Than War, McCarthy’s songwriter Malcolm Eden suggested that this satire of reductio ad absurdum literature banning should perhaps be covered by Miley Cyrus. Strangely enough though, the phrase ‘Should The Bible Be Banned’ is a pretty hook, and the outro lifts off dramatically with Sadier’s subtle introduction. More jangly than Neu! inspired, it’s easy to see how Gane’s approach to guitar playing was transformed by the formation of Stereolab. But there are also some continuities here as well — there’s still a chiming quality in his 12 string guitar, and a kind of lo-fi noisiness which is present in early Stereolab records.

‘French Disko’ (1993)

I first remember seeing ‘French Disko’ on YouTube, on a music programme that I’m personally much too young to have seen the first time it aired, a British 90s series called The Word designed to replace The Tube. Originally released at the end of 1993 on Stereolab’s first Elektra release, the EP Jenny Ondioline, the song charted at no. 75. Scantily clad male dancers and special effects aside, their guest appearance on The Word was an excellent introduction to them at their most musically immediate. Here the motorik beat of ‘French Disko’ (adopted as much from the Velvet Underground as German bands like Can or NEU!) has an urgency far more apparent than on the original EP recording. There’s an addictiveness to it similar to that of ‘What Goes On’ by VU, with lyrics that turn the absurdist existentialism of Camus into a heart-pumping rhetorical cry for personal freedom. “Even though the world is essentially an absurd place to live in it doesn’t call for bubble withdrawal”, Sadier intones over droning synth and guitar, before her self-consciously Gallic cheer of “La Résistance”. There’s nothing gloomy about this performance: following in the footsteps of their situationist influences, Stereolab are as playful as disobedient children onstage. Their buoyancy makes me think of the situationist Eventstructure Research Group, attempting to separate the act of play from commodification and instead framing it as an act of radical spontaneity and non-conformism.

‘Jenny Ondioline’ (1993)

Duophonic Ultra High Frequency Disks Limited, or Duophonic Records for short, was a record label established by Stereolab in 1991. It featured many bands which would go on to be associated with Stereolab’s own penchant for analog synthesizers and library music such as Broadcast, The High Llamas, Tortoise, Pram and Yo La Tengo. Now, the label supports releases from Stereolab and Gane’s new project Cavern of Anti-Matter with one of Stereolab’s past drummers Joe Dilworth (also of Th’ Faith Healers) and Holger Zapf. It was through this label that Stereolab also released their first record, the ‘Super 45’ 10” which was a mail order limited to only 880 copies. Although also established by Sadier and Gane, the label is managed by Stereolab’s manager Martin Pike.

‘Les Yper-Sound’ from Emperor Tomato Ketchup (1996)

Released on their fourth studio album Emperor Tomato Ketchup in 1996, ’Les Yper-Sound’ marks a time in the Stereolab discography when they experienced a surge in popularity both commercially and critically. It comes as no surprise: here their steady timing is now matched with a keener feel for melody, structure and space between instrumentation. The bass is soft, barely there, playing tasteful contrast to chugging guitar and washes of synth melody that colour Sadier’s vocals. Every instrument has space to breathe while working comprehensively, no tone is wasted. You cannot complain about self-indulgence on this record. Sadier is just as economical lyrically, with the political sentiment here simpler, clearer, and her sounding calm and in control of the delivery of the message. It’s hard to pick out a particular favourite from Emperor Tomato Ketchup as every song sounds in full flower; Stereolab’s layers of synth, guitar and vocal become breezy and glowing, their 60s chamber pop touches lush and well arranged. In terms of sound, it’s Stereolab at their most realised and also relaxed: this record sounds through and through like it was a joy to make.

‘Simple Headphone Mind’ (1997) with Nurse With Wound

Kybernetická Babička Pt. 1 (2005)

A criticism of Stereolab such as the one found in that shoe-pieing of Cobra And Phases Play Voltage In The Milky Night by the NME is that they are emotionless, boring. There’s nothing that captures this more in their catalogue than 2005’s ‘Kybernetická Babička Pt. 1’, with aggressively looping brass, synths and Sadier’s voice into a locked groove, a stylus caught in a scratch on a record — forever. After the death of guitarist Mary Hansen in 2002, it’s safe to say that Stereolab changed with the lack of her highly distinctive, noise driven guitar experiments. The song title is in fact extremely topical to today’s AI anxieties, as its Czech name translates to ‘The Cybernetic Grandma’ and refers to a 1962 Czechoslovakian sci-fi puppet animation short wherein humans are coaxed into machine control. If my aesthetic preferences weren’t completely deranged, I’d probably point out this release as being the most irritating song that Stereolab has ever written. But there was a time in my life where I found myself revisiting ‘Kybernetická Babička Pt. 1’ frequently, finding something reassuring in the bleep of its emotional flatlining. It probably has a similar appeal to Anna Meredith’s ‘Nautilus’ in its relentless persistence, with repetition of honking brass elevated to something almost transcendentally grating and as a result absolutely unforgettable. The tedium of an early 00s ringtone that high school children would have at one point tortured each other with. This Strange World Of… therefore comes with a warning that ’Kybernetická Babička Pt. 1’ will always be wedged in your head after hearing it, hypnotised by the machines.
