Экс-глава «Яндекс Новостей» запустил альтернативный новостной агрегатор

Лев Гершензон, который в прошлом возглавлял «Яндекс Новости», запустил бета-версию альтернативного новостного агрегатора The True Story. О запуске он сообщил в Facebook (принадлежит Meta, которая признана в России экстремистской и запрещена).

«Наша задача — показывать главные события дня и по каждому событию давать краткую информацию и предоставить ссылки на разные материалы СМИ, которые подробно пишут о событии», — написал Гершензон. Он добавил, что это бета-версия – «то есть не все и всегда работает, не все, что работает, работает так, как нам бы хотелось».

По словам создателя The True Story, проект привлек первые инвестиции. Точную сумму Гершензон не назвал, но отметил, что это 5% от предполагаемого годового бюджета проекта.

Агрегатор The True Story формирует ин­фор­ма­цион­ную лен­ту ав­то­ма­ти­чес­ки, а не руками редакторов, говорится на сайте проекта. Ма­те­риалы, проанализированные алгоритмом, собираются в сюжеты, которые ранжируются по важности и актуаль­ности. В числе источников, которые агрегирует The True Story, в том числе СМИ, признанные в России иностранными агентами или заблокированные Роскомнадзором.

Как рассказывал Гершензон в интервью «Роскомсвободе», новый агрегатор будет иметь русскоязычную и англоязычную версию. В последней будет 150 источников из 15 стран мира. В русскоязычной же на старте не будут агрегироваться иностранные русскоязычные источники, но будут «Би-би-си» и «Радио Свобода» (признано в России СМИ-иноагентом), которые ориентированы на Россию. Позже сервис планирует расширить список. Главная цель The True Story – помочь «притесненным изданиям», однако «официальные» издания, такие как «Интерфакс», РБК, «Коммерсантъ», «Ведомости», RTVI, тоже есть в подборке, чтобы не получилось «дисбаланса», говорил Гершензон.

Лев Гершензон руководил сервисом «Яндекс Новости» с 2005 по 2012 год. После начала российской «спецоперации»* на Украине он назвал «Яндекс» ключевым элементом «в сокрытии информации» о происходящем на Украине и призвал бывших коллег изменить политику сервиса. Тигран Худавердян, в то время управляющий директор «Яндекса», в ответ на критику указал на необходимость обеспечивать стабильную работу компании. «По этим причинам мы не можем забираться на броневик», — заявил топ-менеджер. Позднее Худавердян попал под санкции Евросоюза и покинул свой пост. ЕС в своем обосновании санкций в отношении Худавердяна ссылался, в том числе, на заявления Гершензона. Худавердян оспорил санкции в Европейском суде.

После начала «спецоперации» «Яндекс» объявил о решении избавиться от сервисов «Яндекс Новости» и «Яндекс Дзен». О покупке сервисов у компании в апреле сообщил VK.

Он вроде бы покинул Яндекс гораздо раньше всех событий, если я ничего не путаю.
И как он говорил, что вся поддержка на сегодня, чуть ли не волонтёрами происходит.
И зарабатывать пока не планирует.
В любом случае, это хорошая новость, на фоне того, что сми закрываются (я понимаю, что это не совсем сми).

Хз как у других, независимая новость для меня в нынешних реалиях, это от тех людей, которые ведут жизнь по образу Робинзона Крузо.

Они пытаются сделать второй СОКР. Вот только вопрос, на таком уровне как получить лицензию на ведение деятельности СМИ. Если так же, как и всякие яндекс новости, то какой смысл в его проекте? Там будут те же самые новости: в рф все збс, путеным довольны, ес скоро замерзнет, США уже гниет. Если же там новости будут реально true story (интересно, где нынче такие взять, когда кругом одна пропаганда то одного, то другого?!), то как получить лицуху?) За такое не по лицухе, а по бутылке выдают.

Всей правды мы не знаем.

Бывший руководитель «Яндекс Новостей» запустил новый агрегатор The True Story

Бывший руководитель проекта «Яндекс Новости» Лев Гершензон запустил новый новостной агрегатор под названием The True Story. Он заработал в бета-версии. Об этом предприниматель рассказал в фейсбуке*.

Гершензон заявил, что задача сервиса — «показывать главные события дня и по каждому событию давать краткую информацию и предоставить ссылки». Он отметил, что на странице могут быть ссылки не только на СМИ, но и на другие источники.

«Наши алгоритмы ранжируют сюжеты, заголовки, внешний контент, но выбор, где читать подробности, какому мнению верить, а с каким не соглашаться, всегда остается за читателем. Пусть всегда будет выбор!» — пояснил Гершензон.

Бизнесмен подчеркнул, что первая версия агрегатора еще недоработана. «Мы будем добавлять новые функциональности, отлаживать и обучать основные алгоритмы, чинить баги», — пообещал он.

Гершензон попросил пользователей делиться своими впечатлениями от сервиса. «Чем лучше и конструктивнее предложение, тем выше вероятность, что оно будет реализовано», — добавил он.

«Правдивая история» (True Story), 2015

Сразу предупреждаю: перед нами тяжелая, путанная драма с открытым финалом. Премьера её состоялась на Sundance Film Festival в этом году, к нам фильм привез AMFEST фестиваль, и прежде чем посмотреть его – решите для себя, готовы ли вы исследовать отношения, которые развиваются между незадачливым журналистом (Джона Хилл) и маньяком (Джеймс Франко), убившим собственную семью. Сложно сказать, что будет спойлером в этой невероятной картине, но на всякий случай буду убирать под каты документальные справки.

«Правдивая история» является вольной экранизацией мемуаров реального журналиста Майкла Финкеля, подававшего большие надежды, но прославившего именно тем, что его именем назвался убийца Кристиан Лонго. Ошарашенный таким поворотом дела Финкель обращается за ответом (почему я?) к Лонго и получает предложение эксклюзивного материала, в обмен на … уроки письма. Таков зачин этого дела. Но у фильма он несколько иной. Здесь главный герой – сам Финкель, приукрасивший одну из своих историй. Неловкий подлог раскрыли, и Майкла выкинули с работы, фактически выдворили из профессии, заставив забиться в родной дом в Монтане, как в нору. Из нее то Майкла и выманил Лонго. Фильм, как и полицейские штата, попытается разобраться, кто кого нашел в этой истории.

Пользуясь случаем, упомяну еще раз прекрасного Руперта Гулда. Тем, кто как ваш автор очарован его «Ричардом II», представлять режиссера не нужно. Но всегда приятно напомнить, что родился Гулд 18 февраля 1972 года. В первую очередь, он – театральный режиссер. Сейчас художественный руководитель Almeida Theatre. Руперт окончил Тринити – колледж в 1994 году и продолжил обучение (выиграв грант) в Нью-Йорском университете. Работать начинал в театре, поднявшись от стажера до художественного руководителя. Разные источники с гордостью сообщают, что кроме постановок спектаклей и руководства разными театрами за ним числится соавторство неких приспособлений для сцены. Это меня особенно умиляет в британских биографиях. Жаль, у нас это ценят реже. Но я отвлеклась, в 2008 году режиссер получил своего «Оливье» и задумался о своей жизни, решив что это заслуженная кульминация карьеры: «Я вернулся домой опустошенный, сжимая сжимая трофей за лучшую режиссуру, подавленный тем, что достиг своего пика». Это и подарило нам своеобразного телевизионного «Макбета», в котором Гулд в своё удовольствие поэкспериментировал … с советской атрибутикой. Нельзя сказать, что он забросил театр, о нет! Уже в 2009 году его следующая работа была номинирована уже на три премии «Оливье». С 2010 года Гулд некоторое время был заместителем директора в Королевской Шекспировской компании, ставил оперы, снял эпизод «Пустой короны», и вот добрался до большого кино.

Не обойдем вниманием и Фелисити Джонс (Felicity Jones). Номинантка на премии «Оскар», «BAFTA» и «Золотой глобус» за роль Джейн Хокинг в фильме «Теория всего» выросла в в Боурнвилле, Бирмингем. На самом деле, она далеко не новичок в кино, появившись в нем впервые в возрасте 12 лет. Официально её первой ролью считается— роль школьной задиры Этель Хэлоу в первом сезоне телевизионного сериала «Самая плохая ведьма» (1998), но на деле были еще работы в театре, на радио. Эта девочка очень рано поняла, чего хочет на самом деле. Задолго до триумфального шествия по миру она засветилась в таких проектах, как «Нортенгерское аббатство», «Воспоминания неудачника», «Доктор Кто» (в эпизоде «Единорог и Оса», «Возвращение в Брайдсхед», «Дневник Анны Франк», «Шерри», «Буря» (с Хелен Миррен, где Фелисити играет Миранду), в американских проектах «Как выйти замуж за миллиардера», «Без истерики!», «Новый Человек-паук. Высокое напряжение». Она еще в 2011 году выиграла награду фестиваля Сандэнс за неоднозначную роль в странной картине «Как сумасшедший» (Like Crazy), драме Дрейка Доремуса. Фильм снят на цифровой фотоаппарат Canon EOS 7D, большая часть его сюжета является полной импровизацией. Режиссер впоследствии с удовольствием вспоминал, что в большинстве диалогов Фелисити Джонс и Антону Ельчину приходилось придумывать их на ходу.

По традиции, мы не обсуждаем даже очень любимых и звездных американцев. Франко привел меня в этот фильм, в его дуэте с Хиллом заключена сама суть картины. Совместные сцены и составляют то самое напряжение, которым фильм по праву гордится. Фильм, в котором убийства и его подробности остались за кадром. Фильм, который плетет такую тонкую сеть, что сложно сказать, где начинается одно и разворачивается другое. У меня сложилось впечатление очень шахматной партии. Где за гамбитом последовал контргамбит.

К слову, меня никто не наказал тогда, не за что было. А вот Кристиан Лонго, спустя 8 лет, всё же был приговорен к смертной казни. Как досмотрите картину, вспомните бонус, который я поставлю внизу под катом. Просто бонус, не имеющий (опять-таки) отношения к фильму, но много добавляющий к нему.

The true story

Успешный журналист Майкл Финкель обладает даром отыскивать шокирующие истории и благодаря этому имеет в своем арсенале десять обложек New York Times. В поисках очередного громкого материала он решает написать статью про мальчика из благотворительной организации, с которым обращаются как с рабом. Опросив несколько ребят и не сделав ни одной заметки, Майкл возвращается в издание и быстренько накидывает статью, параллельно играя в покер. Партия выиграна, но вот только проблема в том, что журналист скомпоновал факты из разных источников и выдал все за историю одного ребенка. На вопрос главного редактора «зачем?» Майкл говорит, что создать трогательную историю для него было гораздо важнее, чем рассказать правду, и в тот же день получает увольнительную. Приходится возвращаться в родной город, репутация подорвана, ни одно издание его брать к себе не хочет, но тут поступает телефонный звонок: редактор местной газеты сообщает ему, что Кристиан Лонго, опасный преступник, убийца жены и троих детей, скрывался в Мексике и все это время назывался Майклом Финкелем. Обуреваемый желанием узнать мотивы преступника и написать новый ошеломляющий материал журналист едет на «свидание» с заключенным.

С самого первого кадра фильм хочет быть интригующим и загадочным триллером вроде «Пленниц» и в то же время отливать глянцем лучших образцов оскаровского кино. Но «хочет быть» — это, пожалуй, максимум, которым его можно охарактеризовать. Каждая сцена окружена облаком пафоса: плюшевые медведи, летящие в слоу-мо, крупный план прищура Франко и голубых глаз Джоны Хилла, высокопарный саундтрек. Режиссер Руперт Гулд будто прочитал от корки до корки учебник «Как снять триллер», а потом пересматривал каждую сцену, водя пальцем по страницам, сверяясь, все ли он сделал так. Все и правда так, вот только совсем не работает. Создается впечатление, будто смотришь фильм невероятной значимости, и, когда понимаешь, что это далеко от правды, начинаешь чувствовать дикое раздражение.

Фильм основан на реальных событиях, его герои живы-здоровы, но и это не влияет на характер просмотра, потому что история подана абсолютно безыскусно. Взаимоотношения героев крайне просты, будто это не талантливый журналист, который всегда доискивается до правды, и хладнокровный жестокий убийца собственных детей. Целиком можно услышать только самый первый их разговор, все дальнейшие встречи показаны в режиме ускоренной перемотки и в обрывках писем. В итоге думаешь, как все получилось так, а не иначе, почему подобные отношения имели место, а ответа фильм дать не может.

В картине только два полноценных героя. Джона Хилл справляется с ролью журналиста вполне неплохо, жаль вот, что с Франко история другая. Нет сомнений, что Джеймс талантливый человек и актер, но в последнее время кажется, что он выбирает, в каком фильме будет выкладываться, а в каком покажет пару сомнительных актерских приемов. Его роль в данной картине попадает под второе определение: неубедительная игра выдает убийцу в первые минуты разговора вовсе не по задумке сценариста, и как кто-то из героев мог на это купиться, неясно. Есть еще персонаж Фелисити Джонс, который там невозможно лишний и выступает исключительно в качестве интерьера.

Раздраженное недоумение не рассеивает даже концовка, назойливое «я же говорил» продолжает крутиться в голове, и даже какая-то обида разбирает за нереализованный потенциал сюжета. В конце фильма Майкл Финкель заявляет, что был очарован и обманут Кристианом Лонго и в то же время ненавидел его. К сожалению, сама картина таких ярких эмоций не вызывает совсем.

True Story (Тру Стори, Реальная история, Правдивая История) — перерисованный персонаж сериала «Как я встретил вашу маму», который держит в руке бокал вина и морщит лоб. Используется в конце комикса или сообщения, чтобы показать, что история не выдуманная.

Происхождение

Сама фраза True Story возникла, конечно, задолго до появления соответствующего ей фейса. Первым задокументированным свидетельством считается использование этого интернет-сленга на сайте Usenet в 1995 году. Автор написал типичный длиннопост, а в качестве аргумента заявил, что история случилась с ним самим.

True Story – одна из коронных фраз Барни Стинсона – персонажа сериала “Как я встретил вашу маму”. Первые серии выходили в 2005 году, поэтому фраза “Правдивая история” как мем зародилась примерно тогда же (в русском дубляже переводилось как “И это правда”).

Если говорить о фейсе True Story, то он тоже связан с сериалом HIMYM. На картинке изображен парень с наморщенным лбом, который протягивает бокал вина. Он срисован с того же Барни Стинсона (актер Нил Патрик Харрис).

Этот мем появился на Reddit в феврале 2011 года. Кадр взят из первой серии 4 сезона “Как я встретил вашу маму”.

Фейс True Story относится к категории мемов из серии комиксов Rage Comics.

Значение

Мем “Правдивая история” используется, как ни странно, в двух противоположных ситуациях. Первая – когда автор поста или комикса действительно рассказывает о том, что было на самом деле, хотя на первый взгляд это очень невероятная история.

Вторая – ироничная реплика по отношению к откровенному вранью. Её чаще используют комментаторы, чтобы показать, что они не верят автору.

Экс-глава «Яндекс.Новостей» запустил альтернативный агрегатор новостей

Бывший руководитель агрегатора новостей «Яндекс.Новости» Лев Гершензон запустил бета-версию альтернативного сервиса The True Story, который будет агрегировать материалы СМИ и публикации в социальных сетях. Гершензон сообщил об этом в Facebook (компания Meta, владелец соцсети, признана экстремистской и запрещена в России).

«Это бета-версия — то есть не все и всегда работает, не все, что работает, работает так, как нам бы хотелось. Мы будем добавлять новые функциональности, отлаживать и обучать основные алгоритмы, чинить баги», — написал он.

Проект уже привлек первые инвестиции, найдено почти 5% от предполагаемого бюджета на год, добавил Гершензон. Сейчас команда The True Story ведет активные переговоры с потенциальными инвесторами.

Агрегатор работает по схожему с «Яндекс.Новостями» принципу: новости и связанные с ними публикации сервис автоматически собирает в новостные сюжеты, ранжированные по важности и актуальности. На сайте агрегатора указано, что сюжеты будут собираться в «большие и долгоиграющие темы».

«Таким образом, наши пользователи получают не просто атомизированные новости, но возможность посмотреть на со­бытие с разных сторон и следить за глобальными историями в развитии», — говорится в описании проекта. Разработчики пообещали дать пользователям гибкие инструменты для управления «информационными пузырями».

The True Story агрегирует новости в том числе от СМИ, признанных в России иностранными агентами, и СМИ, заблокированных Роскомнадзором.

Гершензон возглавлял сервис «Яндекс.Новости» с 2005 по 2012 год. После ввода российских войск на Украину он назвал агрегатор от «Яндекса» ключевым элементом «в сокрытии информации о происходящем». «Нет таких российских законов, которые не позволяют выбрать в качестве заголовка сюжета материал «Новой газеты». Нет уголовной ответственности за то, что на главной «Яндекса» появятся заголовки русскоязычных СМИ, не имеющие лицензии СМИ», — написал он.

В «Яндексе» в ответ на критику Гершензона указали на необходимость обеспечивать работу компании. «То, что мы защищаем сейчас, — это не бизнес. Это сервисы, необходимые для живущих в стране людей, как электричество или водопровод. Поиск должен искать. Такси должно приезжать, товары и еда — доставляться, инфраструктура — работать», — пояснил занимавший в то время должность управляющего директора «Яндекса» Тигран Худавердян. Он добавил, что эти причины не позволяют компании «залезать на броневик».

Худавердян позднее попал под санкции Евросоюза. В пояснениях к санкционному листу говорилось, что в начале марта бывший руководитель сервиса «Яндекс.Новости» Лев Гершензон обвинил компанию в том, что она служит «ключевым элементом в сокрытии информации» от пользователей о действиях российских войск на Украине. Худавердян затем покинул «Яндекс» и подал иск с требованием отменить санкции, указав, что не поддерживает действия России на Украине.

«Яндекс» к середине марта решил продать свой новостной агрегатор вместе с «Яндекс.Дзеном», рассказывали источники РБК. К концу апреля стороны подписали соглашение о покупке, в «Яндексе» и VK сообщили об ожидании положительных заключений от регуляторов.

Роскомнадзор внес в реестр запрещенных сайтов и заблокировал новостной агрегатор The True Story, запущенный экс-главой «Яндекс.Новостей» Львом Гершензоном.

«Наша бета планово входит в следующую стадию — теперь на территории России нас можно читать только из-под VPN. Я и не надеялся, что нам дадут поработать свободно целых три дня, — видимо, август и сезон отпусков», — написал Гершензон в Facebook (принадлежит компании Meta, признанной экстремистской и запрещенной в России).

«Яндекс» в середине марта решил продать «Новости» и платформу «Яндекс.Дзен», говорили источники РБК. О деталях сделки компании рассказали в августе — сервисы купил VK, он обменяет эти активы на Delivery Club.

Лев Гершензон: мой новый проект The True Story — прививка от безумий

До 2012 года Лев Гершезон возглавлял «Яндекс.Новости» (откуда ушёл, видя, как агрегатор превращается в рупор госпропаганды), затем он основал собственный стартап — систему «умного» поиска для интернет-магазинов Detectum. Теперь Лев разработал новый проект — новостной агрегатор The True Story. О нём он и рассказал «Роскомсвободе».

– Лев, как возникла идея проекта?

Для начала следует сказать, что я не занимаюсь новостями последние 10 лет. В эти годы был просто читателем и пользователем. Сейчас возникла потребность утолить информационный голод, а именно: понимать, что происходит, находить важное и интересное, видеть разнообразную информацию.

При этом ресурса, который помогал бы решать эти задачи, мне не хватало всегда. Для старшего поколения Facebook — основная соцсеть. Люди делятся там информацией, и это важно. Но хотелось бы, чтобы не было и перегрузки инфошумом, чтобы существовал ресурс, который действует в твоих интересах, а не в интересах увеличения трафика, количества просмотров и т.д.

Когда началась в****, у всех был шок. Несколько дней я был в прострации, а потом понял, какое влияние оказала пропаганда на ход войны, настроения людей. Журналисты из разных стран рассказывали мне, что они видели. Все говорили о том, что это нонсенс — в XXI веке одна страна напала на другую.

Но вопрос не сводится к одной лишь госпропаганде. Даже в демократических странах людей очень тонко можно дезинформировать.

И это в то время, когда у каждого есть смартфон, в Сети столько всего доступно, под иностранными видео есть неплохой перевод, то есть, казалось бы, нет проблем с доступом к информации. Именно в такое время можно так легко замусорить умы теориями заговоров. На мой взгляд, для людей ограничения есть только в голове и желании задать вопрос.

Моя личная внутренняя потребность в связи с войной — понять, что делать вообще и что можешь делать именно ты, чтобы помочь другим и спастись самому.

Это не только локальная история (цензура, авторитаризм в России). Проблема шире — как правильно потреблять новости, как бороться с информационными пузырями, как показывать, что картина мира больше, чем ты видишь.

– Как будет устроен сервис?

Там будет «Сюжет» — набор сообщений из разных источников, которые посвящены одному событию. Количество СМИ, написавших об этом, отражают важность инфоповода по мнению журналистов. Самые важные новости окажутся на главной.

В новостных агрегаторах есть подобное. Однако «Сюжет» будет шире: в телеграфном стиле он должен давать краткую сводку о событии: кто, где, когда, что сделал, с кем потом встретился, чем завершилось. Для лаконичности придуман блок аннотации. Алгоритмы будут собирать всё основное по сюжету и связывать это вместе.

Подсчитано, что примерно 70% посетителей агрегаторов не уходят по гиперссылкам, если их не интересуют детали события. Но для оставшихся 30%мы соберём тексты, позволяющие покопаться в произошедшем и сравнить изложение событий в разных медиа. Для этого будет блок с одними заголовками.

Нам важно выделить сюжетообразующее сообщение, первоисточник. Например, Пригожин ездит по колониям и агитирует уголовников воевать. Об этом сначала написала «Вёрстка», потом ещё «Медиазона» сделала материал. Многие их процитировали. И вот «Вёрстку» и «Медиазону» мы выносим наверх — смотрите, вот первоисточники.

Есть также внешние ссылки, вводящие читателя за пределы информационных ресурсов. Допустим, вот пишут про отмену виз, и мы даем ссылки на сайты Европарламента, на который ссылаются многие СМИ: может, этим заинтересуется всего 1% пользователей, но нам кажется важным дать все важные источники информации, до которых можем дотянуться.

Страница сюжета — модульная. Кому-то достаточно заголовка и аннотации, а кому-то нужны первоисточники или посты, официальные ссылки и пр.

– То есть это просто сбор информации, какую найдете, или всё-таки представление разных точек зрения?

Конечно, наша миссия — предоставление в конечном итоге разнообразия позиций и мнений. Но при этом подразумевается подталкивание к тому, чтобы человек сделал выбор.

У нас будет упор на выделение прямой и косвенной речи, поскольку политические новости на 50% — это слова, обещания, обсуждения, прогнозы. Практически в каждом документе много цитат. Это будет агрегатор с человеческим лицом. Мы хотим правильно ранжировать слова и мнения и научиться их показывать, чтобы читатель мог выбрать, чему ему верить. На старте будет попроще, но станем развивать проект дальше.

– Как сервис будет работать?

Это будет автоматизированный сервис.

Впрочем, не хочу прикрываться алгоритмами: вот, смотрите, они сами так работают, поэтому это всё объективно. Не верьте никому, кто так говорит, даже мне. Программы пишут люди, люди же обучают ИИ. К автоматизму нужно подходить прагматично.

Нам повезло, что в XXI веке есть мощные вычислительные машины, этим надо пользоваться. Если сервис полностью автоматический, люди всё равно нужны, чтобы следить за ним и развивать.

Все алгоритмы несовершенны. Пока они будут сырыми, мы хотим механизм ручной корректировки явных ошибок. Будем стремиться к полному автоматизму, хотя проект сложный.

– И в чём его сложность?

Во-первых, он просто состоит из множества алгоритмов. Каждый модуль — это отдельная программа. Мы работаем уже четыре месяца — в два раза дольше, чем я планировал до первого запуска. К текущему моменту почти сделали полноценный агрегатор, пусть и в простом виде. Увидим, насколько он будет востребован.

Во-вторых, аналогов, с кластеризацией, большой аудиторией, не так много. Когда делаешь много подобных проектов, каждый следующий делать легче, когда нет — возникают сложности.

– За счёт чего планируете обеспечить финансирование?

Я говорил, что найду финансирование. Что-то получилось, не так, как хотелось бы. Но есть один грант, плюс несколько фондов интересуются проектом. Поиск финансирования – процесс тоже не быстрый. Надеюсь, после запуска и получения фидбека охват будет больше и тогда снова обратимся к инвесторам и компаниям. Конечно, в режиме чистого волонтёрства проект долго жить не сможет.

Спасибо всем, кто участвует сейчас в нём. Все участники сейчас — люди из IT, инженеры, программисты, работающие на волонтёрских началах. Как мои бывшие коллеги, так и люди, с которыми я раньше не был знаком. Но понятно, что, пока это хобби, эффективность у сервиса будет ниже, чем когда у ключевых людей в проекте это будет основное занятие. И хотя многие волонтёры уже очень долго живут на энергии энтузиазма (значит идея вызывает интерес), нельзя ею злоупотреблять. В планах — найти финансирование на пару лет, пока не выйдем на бизнес-модель, при которой сервис станет кормить себя сам.

– Почему, как Вы думаете, никто не придумал подобный проект ещё? Тот же Google.

Много за что можно уважать эту корпорацию. Но Google News — действительно скромный сервис для такой корпорации. Найдите десятерых людей, кто пользуется поисковиком, и ни у одного Google News не будет основным источником новостной информации. Можете проверить, я проверял.

Почему это происходит у такой мощной технологичной компании? Думаю, что они решили, что им это не нужно. Может быть, Google сервис нужен, так сказать, в плане «подводной части», чтобы собирать информацию и качественно отвечать на пользовательские запросы про актуальные события, а новостной агрегатор как отдельный сервис развивают по остаточному принципу. Но лучше узнать у самого Google — у первоисточника.

Другие новостные агрегаторы, которые мы изучили, мне непонятны. Я смотрю на них и думаю, а какой в них смысл. По какому принципу отбираются медиа, неизвестно.

Предполагаю, у людей нет доверия алгоритмам, поэтому новости должны проходить редакционный отбор. Поэтому основной вопрос для нас — можно ли сделать подобный агрегатор по-настоящему популярным, массовым?

– А как вы сами отобрали СМИ для платформы? По каким критериям?

У сервиса будут две версии: русскоязычная и англоязычная. Принцип отбора медиа для них разный. Англоязычный пока нужен для презентации. Он будет содержать 150 источников из 15 стран мира. Это самые популярные в англоязычных странах медиа или английские версии больших изданий в других странах.

В русскоязычной версии на старте не будет иностранных русскоязычных источников, но будут ВВС, «Радио Свобода», которые ориентированы на Россию. Затем расширим список.

Наша цель в России — помочь притеснённым изданиям. Но, чтобы не получилось дисбаланса, в подборке есть несколько официальных изданий: «Интерфакс», РБК, «Коммерсантъ», «Ведомости», RTVI. Кажется пока, что их достаточно для представления официальной мейнстримной повестки и в целом новостная картина получается взвешенной.

Сложностей по этому вопросу много. Известны примеры, когда качество сервиса падает из-за изменений в выборке. Как только сервис становится популярным, появляются желающие им манипулировать. Чтобы прийти к тому, чтобы качество не страдало, сервис должен быть более продвинут в плане алгоритмов.

У нас нет ресурсов для полной автоматизации, поэтому на старте будем отбирать сами, прислушиваясь к медиасообществу. Но даже если у нас того или иного источника нет, а он написал что-то, что заметили журналисты, мы его покажем в отдельном блоке на странице сюжета. Ничего важного не упустим.

– А условную «Комсомольскую правду» в перспективе пустите на платформу?

Честно скажу, текущие алгоритмы ранжирования и кластеризации к этому не готовы. Если мы сейчас подключим все российские государственные сми, то сервис будет транслировать государственную позицию. Нет никакого равенства между официальными и оппозиционными независимыми изданиями. У последних в разы меньше ресурсов и в разы сложнее и опаснее работать.

Мы хотим, чтобы к нашему сервису можно было подключать по формальным основаниям любые новостные издания, но в настоящий момент наши алгоритмы недостаточно совершенные, чтобы это не привело к серьёзному ухудшению основного продукта.

Можно сказать мне — ты хотел сервис без цензуры, но сам проводишь цензуру — хорошо, пусть так. Но все немного сложнее. У Doxa, «Псковской губернии» и других на порядок меньше ресурсов и возможностей работать, они под угрозой преследования, в отличие от государственных изданий. Сравнивать их глупо.

Или вот иногда в топ выходят целиком придуманные новости. Например, читаешь, что жители Германии требуют от Зеленского капитуляции. Ищешь первоисточник, находишь «РИА Новости», которое ссылается на какую-то газету, где в комментариях несколько человек этого «требуют». Издания перепечатывают это — «новость» видят миллионы. Когда созреем, тогда подумаем, что с этим делать.

При этом мы будет счастливы, если к нам придёт ТАСС (но информагентство борется с тем, чтобы его информацию можно было парсить). «РИА Новости» и ТАСС принципиально различаются. В нулевые «РИА Новости» было модернистское, технологически ориентированное агентство, а ТАСС отставал. Потом «РИА Новости» срослось с Russia Today и изменилось. А ТАСС остался тем, чем было. Мы постараемся, чтобы у нас были все источники. Но для этого должны быть разные фильтры, которые помогут делать разные срезы.

В идеале хочется представленности разных стран, разной направленности и т.д. Хочется, чтобы читатель не терял свой информационный пузырь, читал то, что любит, но по умолчанию видел и пузырь большой: а что считает так называемая объединённая редакция – все обрабатываемые издания вместе. Надеюсь, что в скором времени сможем добавлять все источники.

Людей не нужно вытаскивать из их пузыря, но здорово, если получится предложить им альтернативу. Вот вы читаете «Комсомольскую правду», а посмотрите ещё вот это. Но пока мы этого не сделали, просто читайте своё, иногда открывайте нас и смотрите, что ещё бывает.

– В интервью «Холоду» Вы говорили, что в России сформировался нарратив полуправды (сформулирую это так). А как вообще прийти к объективности, на Ваш взгляд?

Как прийти к объективности, я не знаю. Я верю, что истина существует и бывают однозначные вещи. Например, Волга впадает в Каспийское море. Вопросы обычно вызывают оценки.

Наш подход заключается в том, что с помощью алгоритмов будем опираться на журналистское (критерии ещё предстоит выделить) экспертное сообщество. И создание контента и определение важности событий — задача редакций, мы же стараемся алгоритмически это понять и представить.

С самого начала стараемся быть максимально открытыми. Раньше я даже интервью не давал до запуска проектов. К слову, возможно, концепция сервиса важнее того, что сделаем в итоге. Это самоценная история — рассказывать про проект и его принципы. Мы открыты к критике и фидбеку.

– Давайте представим ситуацию, что подобный проект существовал бы и ранее. Как бы тогда развивалась «спецоперация», как думаете?

История не любит сослагательного наклонения, но скажу так:

Верю, что наличие такого проекта — популярного, массового, который даёт множество ссылок, первоисточники, показывает целую картину, а также то, откуда пришла информация, кто что думает, — оно сильно, по крайней мере, затруднило бы манипулирование людьми. Как, к примеру, прививки останавливают болезни.

И если большие компании обратят внимание на проблему того, что формирование критического мышления важнее и выгоднее им стратегически, чем сиюминутные заработки, вся планета от этого выиграет.

Такой сервис — профилактика войны и подобных безумий.

Экс-глава «Яндекс.Новостей» запустил свой новостной агрегатор

Бывший руководитель «Яндекс.Новостей» Лев Гершензон запустил бета-версию новостного агрегатора The True Story. Об этом он рассказал в соцсетях. Задача новой платформы — рассказывать о главных событиях дня, собирать краткую информацию о них и давать ссылки на СМИ, которые написали подробнее. Также айтишник анонсировал появление «экспериментального» Telegram-канала с главными новостями из агрегатора.

Гершензон отметил, что на страницу сюжета могут попасть ссылки на сайты, посты в соцсетях и другой контент. В будущем агрегатор будут отлаживать, исправлять ошибки и добавлять новые функции, сказал он.

По его словам, проект уже нашёл первый источник финансирования — почти 5% от предполагаемого бюджета. Точную сумму Гершензон не раскрыл.

«Поиск финансирования — процесс тоже небыстрый. Надеюсь, после запуска и получения фидбэка охват будет больше, и тогда снова обратимся к инвесторам и компаниям. Конечно, в режиме чистого волонтёрства проект долго жить не сможет», — признал Гершензон.

The True Story Behind HBO’s Gripping True Crime Drama Landscapers

S usan Edwards is living out the dream of many a hopeless romantic at the start of Landscapers, a crime drama series out this week on HBO. She lives in France, with her husband and one true love, Christopher; she spends her days getting lost in French films and buying Hollywood memorabilia in antique stores.

But as the series shows over four tense and surreal episodes, Susan and Christopher are barely hanging on. In truth, they are on the run and have been in some form of hiding since they killed and buried Susan’s parents, William and Patricia Wycherley, in 1998. When Landscapers opens, Susan is spending money they don’t have on signed photos of Gary Cooper, while Christopher, unable to secure work due to the language barrier, has a full breakdown. He calls his stepmother back in the U.K. to ask for money and then makes a startling confession: more than 10 years ago, he and Susan buried her parents in their backyard. The stepmother calls the police, who exhume the bodies—and, naturally, have a lot of questions. As authorities seek the truth of what happened to Susan’s parents, the world the couple had built for themselves for more than a decade collapses.

Landscapers, which stars Olivia Colman and David Thewlis as the central couple, is both a mystery and love story based on chilling and sad real events. Here’s what to know about the true story that inspired the series.

A brief history of Susan and Christopher Edwards

Landscapers shows a couple living a life based on denial. The Guardian reports that the real-life Susan and Christopher Edwards tended to behave this way, too—after marriage, they lived in East London, where Susan stayed at home while Christopher worked as a credit control officer. They were not very social, and Susan spent most of her time indoors. “Their bank statements and credit card bills suggest she was absorbed in a fantasy universe. He had always been interested in military history and she became fixated by second world war leaders,” the newspaper wrote in 2014. “In the late ‘90s, they started buying stamps and autographs, and owning these bits of memorabilia became her passion.”

The fantasy Susan constructed may have been a way for her to deal with her life’s previous disappointments. The series depicts Susan’s relationship with her parents, William and Patricia Wycherley, as an unloving, abusive and secretive one cloaked in politesse. Patricia is shown to be an overbearing mother with a drinking problem, while William says little, but explodes in rage in the moments when he does speak. In the show, the already tenuous relationship devolves following a demand from Patricia to Susan that she sign over her inheritance (from a grandparent) to her parents. According to The Guardian, the relationship between daughter and parents was far from warm: “Her parents were the only people who had any entry into their world, and contact between the two couples was irregular and strained. Susan said in police interviews that her father had never approved of Christopher, and she thought he was jealous when they got married in 1983.”

Motivation for murder

A life of obsession with movies and memorabilia, a fractured relationship with family, a husband who seems to act out of the utmost loyalty—all strange for sure. But how did it lead to murder? The Edwards have one story, while a police investigation uncovers something different. In dramatizing the story, Landscapers fuses the two, blurring the lines between Susan and Christpher’s reality and the actual world to attempt to explain their mindset. In real life, according to the police investigation, the Edwards’ motivation to murder the Wyncherleys came down to money.

Forensic analysts determined that the Wyncherleys were fatally shot at their home some time over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend in 1998. The following business day, Susan emptied her parents’ bank account, according to The Guardian. Over the next decade, the Edwards did everything to keep up the appearance that the Wyncherleys were alive—they maintained their property, kept up with bills and Susan sent Christmas cards and letters on her parents’ behalf to give relatives “updates.” They also kept in touch with the Department of Work and Pensions so they could continue receiving the Wyncherleys’ pension payments, the BBC reports. In 2005, after a driver crashed a car into the property, the Edwardses sold it by forging signatures, continuing their lies. The delicate system worked—until it didn’t.

How did they get away with it for so long?

Until 2012, the ruse concocted by the Edwardses that the Wyncherleys were alive basically worked. Neighbors and friends who might have been suspicious that the couple was not seen anywhere brushed aside their doubt, noting they had been pretty reclusive to begin with. The beginning of the end came around William Wyncherley’s 100th birthday, when the Department for Work and Pensions wrote requesting an in-person meeting to go over his benefits. Panicked, Susan and Christopher took off to France, and lived on money they had stolen from her parents until they ran out.

In the miniseries, after Christopher calls his stepmother (which really happened) and the bodies are found, police look for the couple. They reappear in the U.K. following an email from Christopher to the police promising in “extremely polite” terms that the couple would give themselves up.

How police got to the bottom of Susan and Christopher’s story

Landscapers shows that as film obsessives, the Edwardses—Susan especially—view life in movie terms. There are great heroes who step in to save the day and deep betrayals by villains; endings are either happy or sad. A miserable, self-described “broken” person, Susan depends on this way of thinking to get through each day. She and Christopher convince themselves that they are the heroes in the story of what happened to her parents.

In their carefully rehearsed account of what happened, Susan and Christopher admit to manslaughter. According to their version of the story, Susan was visiting her parents alone when, during a late-night fight, Patricia fatally shot William. Susan said that Patricia then began taunting her—among other things, she alleged that her father had sexually abused her when she was a child and that Patricia admitted she had known about it—and provoked her into shooting her mother. Christopher found out only the next week, according to Susan, when they returned to the house. The two watched Eurovision, they said, ate fish and chips and then she admitted it to him. That night, they said, they buried the two bodies in the garden.

Police quickly broke down their lies through forensic analysis and investigation. Per The Guardian, investigators found that the Wycherleys were each shot in a similar way, suggesting only one person had killed them both. Another hole: How could the couple have spent time in the house watching TV without Christopher noticing the smell of decomposing bodies? Doubts around their story grew deeper once Christopher shared that he had once been a part of a gun club and had experience with firearms.

The True Story Behind ‘True Story’

Based on the real case of an accused murderer and a disgraced journalist, ‘True Story’ reveals that «telling the truth» can be a slippery concept.

Is truth indeed stranger than fiction? Maybe so in the case of the movie True Story, based on the real case of Christian Longo, accused murderer of his wife and three children, and Michael Finkel, the disgraced journalist whose identity Longo briefly assumed.

The film, directed by Rupert Goold and starring James Franco as Longo and Jonah Hill as Finkel, is based on Finkel’s book, True Story: Memoir, Mea Culpa, recounting the case and his personal involvement with his impersonator. Though Finkel writes at the outset that he feels the need to emphasize the truthfulness of what he reports, truth can of course be a slippery concept. Better to stick with the facts.

Finkel didn’t prioritize accuracy in his reporting

First of all, Finkel wasn’t always so respectful of accuracy in reporting. Though he had moved into a coveted writing position with the New York Times Magazine by his early 30s, the journalist got himself in a fix with a 2001 story about child laborers in Mali. Investigating reports of slavery on cocoa plantations in the West African nation, Finkel found the reality to be far more complex. His editor at the Times Magazine proposed he focus on one boy’s journey from poverty-stricken village to squalid plantation. The problem was, there was no single source from Finkel’s reporting that could tell this story. So he invented one from interviews he had done with a number of laborers, giving the story’s subject the real name of a boy he had talked to. The story was published, inconsistencies were spotted and Finkel was exposed, publicly excoriated, and fired.

A door closes, and a window opens. Licking his wounds at his Montana home in early 2002, Finkel got a phone call from another journalist asking about a case thus far unfamiliar to him. Just before Christmas 2001, the bodies of two children had been discovered in a coastal Oregon pond; their ankles had been tethered to pillowcases weighted with rocks. They were identified as 27-year-old Christian Longo’s two oldest children—Zachery, 4, and Sadie, 3. Several days later, his wife MaryJane Longo and two-year-old daughter Madison were found in the nearby bay. Each had been strangled, packed in a suitcase and thrown in the water. Longo was traced by the FBI to Cancun, Mexico, where he had introduced himself as Michael Finkel, writer for the New York Times. Finkel was intrigued enough to contact the now-incarcerated man.

Longo was a fan of Finkel’s writing

Longo, it turned out, had read and was a fan of Finkel’s writing in the Times, National Geographic Adventure and Sports Illustrated, and that was why he chose the journalist’s identity as his own. He agreed (against the advice of his lawyers) to allow Finkel to interview him, and the two men began a communication that encompassed weekly phone calls, voluminous letter writing and a few prison meetings. They were each at a personal low point, although obviously Finkel hadn’t killed anyone. But he does admit in True Story that «I’d lied many times: to bolster my credentials, to elicit sympathy, to make myself appear less ordinary.»

At first, Longo claimed that he didn’t kill all of his children

Longo didn’t confess, and didn’t even initially plead not guilty — he stood «mute» to the indictment. And though he was telling his life story in great detail to Finkel, he did not account for his actions surrounding the murders. Then he pled guilty to the murders of his wife and youngest child, and not guilty in the deaths of the two other children. On the stand during his 2003 trial, he contended that MaryJane, after discovering the extent of her husband’s lies and criminality, had killed Zachery and Sadie, disposed of their bodies, and had also attempted to kill Madison. When Longo found two of his children gone and the third gravely injured, the story continued, he strangled MaryJane and made the agonizing decision to also end his youngest child’s life. The jury wasn’t buying: it found Longo guilty and sentenced him to death.

The story didn’t end there, of course. Finkel’s book was published in 2005. In 2009, Longo contacted the author from Oregon’s Death Row and said he was ready to come clean. When he could no longer keep up the facade of stellar husband and fatherhood, Longo confessed, he had indeed killed his entire family — strangling MaryJane during lovemaking, and throwing all of his children into the water while they were still breathing. He said that he was now ready to be executed and wanted to donate his body parts.

Unfortunately, Finkel discovered, the lethal injections that would kill Longo would also render most of his organs useless. So Longo started an organization called GAVE (Gifts of Anatomical Value from the Executed) with the purpose of changing execution methods to enable harvesting of organs. He even wrote an op-ed piece for the New York Times about his quest. And now, like Finkel, Longo can truthfully say that he has written for the New York Times.

Real story vs true story

First of all, I would like to know if there is such a word composition as «real story». If there is, I would like to know the difference between «real story» and «true story.»

Yes, «real story» does exist. Here are just two examples regarding true story and real story.

True story is often used to say that a story really did happen in real life. You will often see based on a true story regarding a movie, or you will hear someone say it’s a true story when they say something that seems incredible. I don’t think you will often read or hear real story in this sense.

Real story is often used to say that the story tells the truth, as opposed to other stories that are false about a particular topic. Specifically, you will often see the real story in this sense. Here is a title I found searching real story on Google books published in 2001:

You can imagine that there have been many books (or so-called stories) written about globalization. But by saying that this story is the real story, it suggests that previous books on globalization have been false, incomplete, or in some other way inadequate. But true story can be used in this sense too. I don’t see a problem with the title

‘Escape From Alcatraz’ (1979)

Alcatraz, based on an island in San Francisco Bay, was the most secure prison of its time. It was believed to be impossible to escape from until three daring men (played by Clint Eastwood, Fred Ward and Jack Thibeau) made a successful attempt at it in 1962. Turing was a genius but very difficult to work with, as he considered his colleagues inferior to him. However, he will have to overcome both the mathematical and social difficulties if he is to succeed.

‘Lawrence of Arabia’ (1962)

This true-story film depicts the experiences of Welsh diplomat and military officer Thomas Edward Lawrence in the Arabian Peninsula during WWI. It documents the officer’s emotional struggles with the violence that is inherent in war, his own identity and his divided allegiance between his native Britain and his comrades within the Arabian Desert tribes. A truly epic masterpiece.

‘Midnight Express’ (1978)

Midnight Express is the true story of Billy Hayes, an American college student who is caught smuggling drugs out of Turkey and thrown into prison. The film’s title is prison slang for a prisoner’s escape attempt, which is something Billy tries to do multiple times only to be recaptured and brutally beaten by the guards. One of the most famous components of the film is its soundtrack, which won the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 1979.

‘Spartacus’ (1960)

“I’d rather be here, a free man among brothers, facing a long march and a hard fight, than the richest citizen in Rome: fat with food he didn’t work for and surrounded by slaves.” So reads just one of the iconic and uplifting lines from this masterful representation of arguably the most famous slave revolt in history. Directed by the great Stanley Kubrick, the piece is hailed as among the best movies about the Roman Empire ever made.

‘Catch Me If You Can’ (2002)

Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks play leading roles in this feature film based on the life of Frank Abagnale Jr. The young Abagnale became an expert in forgery and disguise, and managed to cash checks for millions of dollars, acting as a Pan Am pilot, a doctor and a legal prosecutor along the way. What’s more impressive, he did it all before his 19th birthday and the only reason he did this was to bring his parents, who got into hard financial circumstances and consequently split up, back together. The film combines comic scenes with rapid action and excellent acting, which should surely have won DiCaprio that long-awaited Oscar?

‘Schindler’s List’ (1993)

This film tells the story of Oskar Schindler (skilfully played by Liam Neeson), a Nazi businessman who undergoes a change of heart, eventually managing to save over 1,000 Jews from the Holocaust. The film is directed by Steven Spielberg and stars Ralph Fiennes as the leading Nazi executioner, the infamous commandant Amon Goeth. The movie was very well received, garnering the totemic Best Director and Best Picture awards from the Academy that year.

‘A Beautiful Mind’ (2001)

This movie, which tells the story of mathematical prodigy John Forbes Nash Jr, is proof that often there is a fine line between pure genius and madness. ‘American Sniper’ (2014)

However, when he was finally released from his duty of war and comes back home, Kyle struggled to escape the haunting shadow of war and death, and had difficulty reconnecting with his wife and children.

‘The Pianist’ (2002)

The Pianist, directed by Roman Polanski and starring Adrien Brody, is a film about Polish-Jewish musician Wladyslaw Szpilman, who struggles to survive the destruction of the Warsaw ghetto during WWII. This critically acclaimed movie won three Oscars, a Palme d’Or and many other significant awards to boot.

‘Erin Brockovich’ (2000)

This movie, which won Julia Roberts an Oscar for her role as the protagonist, represents the life of small-town lawyer and mom of three kids, Erin Brockovich. Brockovich, without any suitable educational background, gets hired as a lawyer, accidentally stumbles upon a major case of water poisoning that has lead to many cancerous diseases in her town and takes the fight to big business. It’s a truly compelling and interesting tale.

‘300’ (2006)

This film tells the true story of the Spartan King Leonidas and his 300 men who fought the Persians at the Battle of Thermopylae, which took place between Greece and Persia (modern-day Iran) in 480BC. With Gerard Butler as the king and Lena Headey (AKA Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones) as his queen, the film combines stunning visuals with great acting and makes history come to life.

‘12 Years a Slave’ (2013)

This biographical drama documents the life of Solomon Northup, a free black man from Upstate New York, who is kidnapped and sold into slavery in 1841. 12 Years a Slave won best picture at the Oscars and was hugely revered by audiences and critics. Not only was it brilliantly directed by Steve McQueen but the movie was touching and realistic.

The 10 Best Movies Based on a True Story

M ovies based on true stories are a special breed of entertainment. We know better than to believe every detail or line of dialogue—movies are always a fiction in the broad sense—and that filmmakers who are dealing with real-life events need to take liberties. They might have to guess what certain encounters might have been like, or imagine dialogue in a situation of which there’s no record. Timelines are abridged; the order of events may be shuffled; supporting figures may be melded into a single character. And yet such a film also demands our trust. We may want to believe, even when we know we shouldn’t. Sometimes our skepticism and our awe have to walk hand-in-hand.

But a vivid, enveloping film can draw us close to the spirit of an event or a person in ways that make us want to expand our view. Sometimes we’re drawn to the library or bookstore, so we can read more about what really happened. And movies based on true stories put us in touch with the past in a visceral way. To see cities and towns recreated as they were 20, 50 or 100 years ago, to look at the clothes people wore, to hear patterns of speech that have since become outmoded: all of these things remind us that the past was a real place, peopled with human beings who cared about the same things we do, who faced challenges that nearly broke them and who found delight in the same joys we ourselves treasure. Each of us can live only one life, but movies that draw on history are windows into the selves that we might have been, had we been born in another time or place or circumstance.

Following is our list of the top 10 movies based on a true story, as chosen by TIME staff and a select group of historians. In order to qualify, the central story in a film must be at least inspired by a real story that happened to real people—not just a fictional story set against a real backdrop—and a central character based on a real person must do things that his or her real-life counterpart actually did. Heroes of investigative journalism, bank robbers and mob informants and gunslingers, ordinary citizens who fought for justice: These people can come to seem more real to us through movies. Their lives may be very different from our own, yet the movie screen opens a portal between us. And the more we learn about them, the more we want to learn. — Stephanie Zacharek

Methodology

We began by creating a pool of 70 contenders: every movie that met our own “based on a true story” standard and appeared at the time of the survey on the IMDB top 100 movies list, IMDB’s list of popular movies based on a true story, the AFI top 100, the Rotten Tomatoes top 100 or the All-TIME 100 Best Movies list. Ten TIME staffers and ten historians then ranked each of the 70 films on a scale of one to five—based on preference, not accuracy. After disqualifying movies that had been seen by fewer than half of the respondents, as well as movies with overwhelmingly split votes (i.e. all fives and ones), these are the films with the highest average scores. 10. Selma (2014)

On March 7, 1965, as voting-rights demonstrators attempted to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala., during a march to the state capital in Montgomery, they were met by heavily armed police. The day would—known as “Bloody Sunday,” after 17 marchers were hospitalized and 50 treated for lesser injuries—would become a key moment in the fight against racist voter suppression in the U.S., as televised images of the attacks on the marchers stunned the country. But the protesters (led by Martin Luther King Jr., John Lewis, Hosea Williams and other civil rights leaders) did not give up.

These events are the backdrop for the Ava DuVernay-directed film Selma, which, with its re-creation of the months leading up to the marches, illustrates the complexities of social justice movements and their leaders. For Joseph P. Reidy, Emeritus Professor of History at Howard University, the film’s strength lies in both depicting the debates between leaders like King and John Lewis, and the stories of unsung local heroes “immortalized in contemporary newsreels,” which fueled public outrage and forced President Lyndon B. Johnson to condemn the violence inflicted on the marchers. “Beautifully crafted and impeccably acted,” Reidy says, “Selma offers a memorable tribute to the ordinary people whose extraordinary courage helped to reinforce a basic right of American democracy: the vote.” — Suyin Haynes

9. The French Connection (1971)

The complex drug trafficking scheme known as the French Connection was cooked up by Corsican gangsters in the 1930s: poppy seeds were shipped from Turkey and Lebanon to Marseille, a major French seaport, where they were processed into heroin, before being shipped out to U.S. By the 1960s, up to 44 tons were being moved in the U.S. yearly, prompting then-President Richard Nixon to dramatically crack down on drugs—and providing plenty of fodder for Robin Moore’s 1969 nonfiction book about some of the NYPD’s busts during the time, The French Connection. Two years later, director William Friedkin’s Oscar-winning film of the same name debuted, with a slightly fictionalized twist on the thrilling real-life drug seizures.

While Friedkin took some liberties with the film, including its iconic car chase, he was committed to keeping the story fairly realistic. To aid with this, he brought on Eddie Egan and Sonny Grosso, the NYPD detectives who provided the inspiration for the film’s protagonists, Detective “Popeye” Doyle (played by Gene Hackman) and his partner Buddy “Cloudy” Russo (played by Roy Scheider). Egan and Grosso served as technical advisers on set for the entirety of production, as well as both acting in small cameos in the film. “The French Connection conveys the seediness of New York in the late ’60s and early 1970s,” says historian Amity Shlaes. “For those of us who love N.Y., the film was, until this year, a marker that showed how far the city had come after the 1970s lows. Now the film proffers hope: the city came back from decline before. The rough fraud cop played by Gene Hackman reminds us of something else: questionable policing is nothing new.” — Cady Lang

8. Schindler’s List (1993)

Filmmaker Steven Spielberg wanted the cast of his adaptation of Thomas Keneally’s 1982 historical novel to keep something in mind: “We’re not making a film, we’re making a document,” as he put it. Up until that point, there had been documentaries and European films about the Holocaust, but not a modern Hollywood blockbuster.

Liam Neeson stars as the real businessman Oskar Schindler, credited with saving more than 1,000 Jewish people by putting them to work in his munitions factory in Brünnlitz, in what’s now the Czech Republic. In reality, there was more than one list, written not by Schindler, but by a Plaszów camp orderly named Marcel Goldberg, that had the names of those cleared to be transported to Schindler’s factory—but that departure from fact did not mar the movie’s impact. The film was hailed not only by critics—it won the Academy Award for Best Picture—but also by Holocaust survivors, who found its depiction of what they went through and the brutality of the Nazi regime so realistic that it inspired many to share their own memories, thus enabling historians to preserve their stories for future generations. Though World War II ended 75 years ago, the film’s lesson is a timeless one. “It is about the actions of someone who refused to go along with the evil,” says historian Julian Zelizer. “That’s a basic message, but one that resonates loudly in our day and age.” — Olivia B. 7. The Sound of Music (1965)

Based on the memoir of the real Maria, the movie tells the story of a free-spirited nun sent to become a governess for seven musical children, just before the start of World War II. As in the film, Maria married Georg von Trapp (who was 25 years her senior in reality) and the family toured Europe in 1937 as the von Trapp family choir. The following year, they fled Austria, which had been annexed by the Nazis, and made their way to New York, where they held their first American concert in December 1938.

The Sound of Music debuted on Broadway in 1959 and the hit film was released six years later, largely remaining faithful to the true story, although the real Georg was said not to be as cold-hearted as his film double, and Maria was said to sometimes have a bit of a temper, contrary to Julie Andrews’ ever-cheery depiction. “In addition to providing a showcase for the meteoric talents of a young Julie Andrews, The Sound of Music also gives an excellent example of the slow creep of authoritarianism and bigotry,” says Danielle Bainbridge, assistant professor of theater and performance studies at Northwestern and host of the PBS Digital Studios series The Origin of Everything. “The insidious but steady integration of Nazi symbolism and ideology throughout the film, interspersed with upbeat musical numbers about rainstorms and young love, reveals dictatorships for what they truly are.” — Suyin Haynes

6. 12 Years a Slave (2013)

Black British director Steve McQueen’s triple Academy Award-winning 12 Years a Slave, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Lupita Nyong’o, is “a raw, horrifying and essential document,” declared TIME’s film critic. Ejiofor stars as Solomon Northup, a free African-American man who was living in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., when he was lured away and kidnapped in 1841 and sold into slavery in Louisiana. The film was based on Northup’s own 1853 memoir Twelve Years a Slave, which documented his treatment on the plantation and his eventual freedom and reunion with his family, as well as on input from historians and researchers.

“12 Years a Slave meets the high bar for historical accuracy as well as artistic excellence,” says Manisha Sinha, Draper Chair in American History at the University of Connecticut, who recommends the film to her students as a source for their work. “It is for the most part extremely faithful to the original narrative of Solomon Northup, which I had taught in my class for years before the movie came out. I think he would approve.” — Suyin Haynes

5. GoodFellas (1990)

“As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster,” declares Ray Liotta’s Henry Hill, protagonist of Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas, the 1990 classic crime film charting the rise and fall of a mafioso and his network in Italian-American Brooklyn. Viewers of the film, however, are left with plenty of reasons why a life in the mob might not be quite so desirable.

Billed as “the fastest, sharpest 2 1/2-hr. ride in recent film history,” by TIME’s film critic on its release, Goodfellas was based on the 1985 Wiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family by crime reporter Nicholas Pileggi, who also co-wrote the screenplay for the film. Pileggi’s book detailed the life of the real Henry Hill and his associates Thomas DeSimone and James “Jimmy” Burke. Their characters inspired those played by Joe Pesci and Robert deNiro in the movie, which featured the real 1978 Lufthansa heist at JFK Airport, thought to have been planned by Burke. “Goodfellas demythologizes organized crime, giving an audience primed by Coppola, Brando and Pacino a look at a world that was messy, bitter and unromantic,” says Jason Herbert, creator of Historians at the Movies and a PhD candidate at the University of Minnesota. “Plus, that garlic shot.”— Suyin Haynes

4. Spotlight (2015)

Starring Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams and Michael Keaton as members of a real team of investigative journalists at the Boston Globe,Spotlight shows the efforts of reporters to uncover the history of systematic sexual abuse within the Archdiocese of Boston. The film is largely faithful to true events and based on real people; in January 2002, the Boston Globe Spotlight investigations team published their first story in a series of articles exposing the cover up of the abuse by Roman Catholic priests. Marty Baron, the current editor of the Washington Post, was the editor of the Globe at the time the film takes place, and is portrayed by Liev Schreiber in the film. “What is especially striking about the film is how well the director and writers effectively conveyed the real-life story of this group of courageous journalists—while carefully and delicately unveiling the personal lives of the victims of abuse,” says Keisha N. Blain, associate professor of history at the University of Pittsburgh. “By centering these difficult stories, in a moving, respectful and honest way, I think Spotlight is one of the best movies ever produced.” — Suyin Haynes

3. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)

Paul Newman and Robert Redford stole hearts and set a new standard for the buddy film when they portrayed notorious real-life outlaws Robert “Butch Cassidy” LeRoy Parker and Harry “The Sundance Kid” Longabaugh in 1969’s Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. While the film begins with the disclaimer that “most of which follows is true,” in reality, the film takes plenty of creative liberties in the service of creating a rollicking, if not quite historically accurate, Western. Even the central relationship was really more of a casual working partnership than the best friendship portrayed in the film, according to Cassidy’s sister Lula Parker Betenson, and the film’s famous ending is still the subject of historical debate: did the two men die in Bolivia or, as Cassidy’s sister and great-nephew contend, did Cassidy escape?

Those questions, however, don’t detract from the movie’s impact—or that of the character of Etta Place, played by Katharine Ross, says Stephanie Coontz, emeritus faculty of history and family studies at The Evergreen State College. “I loved that the guys were so charmingly incompetent and self-deprecating in some areas, without being feckless buffoons. It was the first time I’d seen men willing to admit a woman into their adventures and allow her to be a real friend to one of them without any rivalry between them,” Coontz recalls of seeing the movie when it came out. “I reacted to the movie less as a history student, which I was at the time, than as a product of my own time—a young woman who was fed up with the gender stereotypes I’ve been brought up with.” — Cady Lang

2. All the President’s Men (1976)

A younger generation might know Bob Woodward for his exhaustive chronicles of the Trump Administration in his books Fear: Trump in the White House and Rage. But nearly half a century earlier, he was uncovering the secrets of another president: Richard Nixon. In 1972, he and Washington Post colleague Carl Bernstein began to investigate a break-in at the Democratic National Convention. After exhaustive research, they found that the break-in was part of a massive campaign of political espionage and sabotage on behalf of Nixon and against his opponents; the Watergate scandal soon brought about the downfall of Nixon’s presidency. The journalists and editor Ben Bradlee, says Barbara A. Perry, Gerald L. Baliles Professor and Presidential Studies director at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center, are “genuine American heroes.”

Just four years after the break-in, Alan J. Pakula’s film was released, with Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman playing Woodward and Bernstein, respectively, in their dogged hunt for the truth. Pakula and screenwriter William Goldman finessed their journalistic pursuit into a nerve-wracking detective story with shadowy garage basement face-offs. Unlike Woodward and Bernstein’s book of the same name, the film focuses less on the actual details of Watergate, instead homing in on the personalities and procedures behind one of the biggest investigations of the 20th century, and important real-life supporting characters like Washington Post’spublisher Katharine Graham are left out. Its picture of the impact of the investigation, however, is very real. The film nabbed eight Oscar nominations; 20 years later, longtime Post writer Ken Ringle called it “the best film ever made about the craft of journalism.” — Andrew R. Chow and Cady Lang

1. Dog Day Afternoon (1975)

Al Pacino has played many criminal masterminds over the course of his career, but John Wojtowicz isn’t one of them. On a scorching 1972 summer day, the Vietnam War veteran made a clumsy attempt to rob a Brooklyn bank, only to be penned in with hostages for a 14-hour standoff. Sidney Lumet’s Dog Day Afternoon depicts the agonizing time spent inside the bank, during which Wojtowicz agonized over his actions and unexpectedly bonded with some of his captives. Among our pool of 10 historians and 10 TIME staffers, everyone who had seen the film ranked it either “great” or “fantastic”—and, points out historian Annette Gordon-Reed, Pacino’s “explosive performance” also created a bit of history, in the form of the 1970s catchphrase “Attica! Attica!”

After the film’s release, Wojtowicz complained in a letter written from prison that the film was only “30% true,” although he also called Pacino’s depiction of himself “flawless.” However, some reporters have cast skepticism on Wojtowicz’s version of events, saying that his stated motive—to pay for a gender-reassignment surgery for his lover Liz Eden—was a cover for a mafia plot. Whether or not the movie was accurate, Wojtowicz is right about one thing: Pacino is undeniably fantastic, imbuing the character with pathos and pent-up frantic energy. The film would make Wojtowicz a folk hero to many—and actually did help fund Eden’s real-life surgery. — Andrew R. Chow

«True Story» from 2015 stars Jonah Hill and James Franco as writer Mike Finkel and killer Christian Longo, respectively.

Finkel was a well-regarded journalist for the New York Times who fudged a story and combined five people into one, was caught, and was fired.

He learns later that a man who murdered his wife and three children, Christian Longo, was caught in Mexico and was at the time using the name Mike Finkel. Intrigued, Finkel arranges a meeting.

What follows is a bonding experience, where Longo claims to be a long-time fan of Finkel, and Finkel finds similarities between his own life and is impressed that he and Finkel even take similar types of notes. Longo asks that none of the information he gives Finkel be released until after the trial and promises him exclusivity. In exchange, Longo would like to learn to write the way that Finkel can and asks for pointers.

It’s not until the trial that Finkel learns the true story.

I think a stronger script or even more potent direction could have made this a truly devastating experience. As it is, it’s interesting without being fascinating.

«True Story» (2015 release; 100 min.) brings the story of how a reporter becomes entangled in a murder suspect’s world. As the movie opens, we see some brutal images of a young child being stuffed into a suitcase, which later turns up in the water. What is going on here? After the opening credits, we get to know Michael Finkel (played by Jonah Hill), a New York Times reporter, as he interviews young men somewhere in Africa. Alas, later on he is caught fabricating some of the facts for the subsequent NYT piece and he is let go in disgrace. Meanwhile, we get to know Christian Longo (played by James Franco), accused of killed his wife and 3 young kids. When he is rounded up, he claims to be Michael Finkel, NYT reporter. It is not long before Longo makes contact, from jail, with the real Mike Finkel. To tell you more would spoil your viewing pleasure, you’ll just have to see for yourself how it all plays out.

Couple of comments: «True Story» is based on the Mike Finkel book of the same name, and if of course a true story. The premise of the movie is really intriguing (and cleverly played up in the trailer), reason I went to see this in the first place, namely is Longo somehow playing Finkel, while being in jail, and if so, what disastrous effects could that have for Finkel? Alas, in the movie it doesn’t bear out. There is lots of build up in the movie, and ultimately not enough pay-off. I am all for a long build-up, but there has to be a reward for sticking with the build up, and when the reward finally comes, it’s simply not enough. A quick word about the acting performances: James Franco does what he can with the limited material that is given to him. Jonah Hill is okay as the disgraced NYT reporter. The real star of the movie Felicity Jones in the role of Jill, the girlfriend of Mike Finkel. I also want to give props to prolific soundtrack composer Marco Beltrami (recently of The November Man; The Drop; The Giver, just to name those), who once again provides a lovely soundtrack.

The early evening theater screening where I saw this at was attended not very well (less than 10 people), but in fairness, it was a weekday evening. That said, while this is not a ‘bad’ movie per se, nor do I feel that the movie is all that it could’ve become. That said, if you have a chance to check out «True Story», be it in the theater or on DVD/Blu-ray, I suggest you do and draw your own conclusion.

if you’d asked me to rate this half way through, i’d say it was at least 8 or 9, everything was well done, a well made film that had you guessing and the cast was great.

Finkel(Jonah Hill)is a young up and coming journalist writing for the New York Times when his career is derailed after he plays a little fast and loose with some facts of a recently published article. While trying to plan the next chapter in his professional life he receives a call from a reporter looking to get an angle on the story about Longo. It seems that he was using Finkel’s identity when he was captured in Mexico. Finkel is naturally curious but also smells a story that could put his career back on track.

Finkel and Longo arrange to meet and what follows are a series of meetings where both men engage in a dialogue meant to extract as much information as possible from the other. But how much of what Longo shares is the truth? How does Finkel use the information he gets?

The main problem with this movie is the pay-off, or the lack thereof. The story is simply not as interesting as it sounds. Honestly, it’s no ones fault. The direction by first timer Rupert Goold is solid, well paced, and true to the story. The acting is good even if it is a little weird to see Hill and Franco together in serious roles. The best way to describe it might be we all know someone(friend or family member) who is excited to tell a story of something that happened to them or something they witnessed and when they are done, looking to you for a reaction, all you can say is «Is that it?»

The most compelling aspect of the film is Finkel coming to grips with the fact that he has to determining what is the truth and what is a lie. Not unlike his readers had to do after reading his last story for the Times. One liar interrogating another.

In the end, the build up leads to very little. The ride was interesting but the destination was a big disappointment.

Back in 2001 Christian Longo’s wife and three children were found dead in various locations, apparently murdered. Longo himself disappeared and was put on the «most wanted» list. He was found not long after in Mexico, he was claiming to be New York Times journalist Michael Finkel. In 2003 he was tried and found guilty, and sentenced to death. Now, 13 years later he apparently is still on death row.

This movie only treats the murders themselves in a very brief manner, does not dwell on them at all. Instead it focuses on the relationship Longo and Finkel developed. Finkel was a very recent journalistic outcast for having falsified a story about boys held into slavery and was desperately searching for redemption and also a nice paycheck. When Longo requested him, he was more than happy to meet him.

The best thing about this movie are the acting of Jonah Hill as Michael Finkel and James Franco as Christian Longo. Both actors have been in some very poor and stupid comedic roles but here they are straight dramatic roles and each handles it very nicely.

The story is interesting but the focus in on how Longo manipulated Finkel and how Finkel lapped it up. The movie is based on Finkel’s own book and, coming off his disgrace for lying, I would presume it is mostly accurate.

Christian Longo (James Franco) has been arrested for the murder of his wife and three children. Unbeknownst to him, Christian has been using his identity. Christian grants him exclusive access.

At no time did I think that Christian is innocent. At best, the circumstance of the murders could be interesting but Franco plays him guilty from the very beginning. With no mystery, the question becomes where the tension of the movie would come from. The theme of truth is useful with Finkel’s constant modification of his relationship with the concept. Even there, losing the book deal is not enough to inject the necessary tension. Although the movie floats the idea, Christian is never threatened with release. There is simply no danger of anything. At best, it’s a character study but Finkel needs to have a darker treatment. This is an intriguing story that comes to not much.

The line between truth and lies is at the core of this real life story based on journalist Michael Finkel’s memoir and recollections of his conversations with Longo.

The New York Times investigative reporter Michael Finkel (Jonah Hill) is introduced to us as he is researching the story which ultimately leads to his dismissal, after it’s discovered he played fast and loose with details in order to present a more impactful story. Soon he receives an odd phone call from an Oregon writer (Ethan Suplee) who informs Finkel that his name is being used by Longo (James Franco), the suspected murderer who was recently captured in Mexico. As a disgraced journalist, Finkel seizes the opportunity to connect with Longo, and soon enough the two morally-compromised men are locked in psychological warfare, where we as viewers aren’t sure just who is using who in this oddball «friendship».

Hill and Franco are best known for their raunchy and raucous comedies, and both deliver much «quieter» performances than what we have come to expect from them. While it’s a bit of stretch to buy Jonah Hill as a renowned writer, Franco is absolutely chilling as a manipulative psychopath. Franco is so good in the role that he overpowers Hill, which undermines what was supposed to be an intricate game of cat and mouse.

Franco is a frightening figure on the courtroom witness stand as he tells his version of that fateful night, and he is equally unnerving to watch in general conversation with Finkel. However, the single best scene in the film comes when Felicity Jones unleashes the wrath of truth on Franco’s Longo. Ms. Jones is otherwise underutilized for most of the film, as her relationship with Finkel is never really explored.

Rather than provide any substantive background on what makes either Finkel or Longo tick, we are instead left to make our own assumptions based on the framed magazine covers and the spurts of flashbacks. And thus the film’s biggest flaw is cheating us out of the backstory that might help explain the otherwise fascinating conversations/showdowns between these two flawed gents one significantly more flawed than the other.

It’s impossible not to compare this to Truman Capote’s «In Cold Blood» and the subsequent films based on his writing experience: Capote (2005), and Infamous (2006). Stretching and bending the truth are common themes, as are intriguing and disturbing insights from the writers and the accused.

There are times True Story comes off as little more than a made for TV movie, but the best moments more than make up for it, and Franco’s portrayal will stick with you long after Finkel finally understands who and what he is dealing with. It’s also a reminder that there are people who «want the truth so badly» they «will lie to get it». Try saying that with a wink.

Right off the bat, it’s odd to see both Jonah Hill and James Franco in a film together and not creating a raunchy, ribald atmosphere. While both men have ventured into drama before (especially Franco, who is, dare I say, the most diverse actor in Hollywood), having these two men work together and not drum up any laughs is a strange thing to note. However, this fact becomes less apparent when we remember, and it only takes moments to do so once the film begins, how great Hill and Franco are at playing complex, layered dramatic roles. Hill’s straight-forward seriousness combined with Franco’s mannered eloquence creates a story that works from the start on the basis of actor chemistry and effectiveness alone.

The film bears a strong resemblance to Truman Capote’s book «In Cold Blood,» as we watch a journalist get so invested in the lives of a murderer who winds up developing tunnel vision so narrow that he can’t see the obvious guilt and manipulation around him. Michael becomes wrapped up with finding out who Christian really is as a person, enthralled by his perspective, which has been muted by what seems to be sensational headlines and news reports, that he simply wants to get to the heart of his subject. Yet, when we see a family completely broken and another telling his side of the story, not really justifying his actions nor explicitly denying them, we become entangled in a web of conflicting testimonies.

To respond to «True Story» in a manner of confusion is only natural; if anything, you’re exhibiting conflicting attitudes the real life Michael Finkel probably did when he met Christian Longo and spoke with him over time. The film subtly answers the questions of truth and examines how perspective and stories, when told rather than pushed aside or muted, do not justify an entire situation, especially one so heinous, but work to complicate it and leave no questions easily answered. We become just as entangled as Michael, and when the film ends, ostensibly without progressing a whole lot, we find ourselves left to our own vices in terms of how we analyze what we just watched.

«True Story» is destined to be one of the most underrated and misunderstood pictures of the year, and the latter because of the fact that there are going to be a barrage of ways one can digest this film. Some have criticized the film for seemingly rooting for the redemption of Christian before doubling back in the concluding trial scenes, yet consider how Michael views him throughout the entire film. He clearly wants the man to redeemed if he had done anything wrong, and tries to believe that he has a troubled, deeply confused soul in his company. However, facts catch up and it is then we realize what we’re dealing with, and that’s one of the reasons «True Story» is so special; it leads us one way, gets us believing one thing, before calling us on our bluff and letting our guard down.

It was very unusual, yet interesting and visually stimulating to see both Jonah and James playing roles so out of their ordinary type. Hill portrays Michael Finkel, The New York Times journalist who is subsequently terminated by the paper after being accused of incomplete research and creating a composite character, a boy named Youssouf Male while covering a story in an article about Ivory Coast Cocoa Plantations.

After being let go by the Times, Finkel (Hill) struggles to find journalistic job opportunities until one day he receives a mysterious phone call from a man regarding an FBI – Federal Bureau of Investigation Most Wanted individual named Christian Longo, portrayed by Franco, who is wanted for murdering his entire family and is eventually captured in México while claiming to be living as Finkel. Finkel decides this is an opportunity story of a life time, so he meets with Longo trying to figure out why his now tarnished journalistic name was used by this accused murderer.

Finkel agrees to share his journalistic expertise with Longo in exchange for information regarding the murders for his Murder Memoir which tells a «True Story» regarding the events portrayed in the film. While in Newport, Oregon County Jail awaiting trial, Longo corresponds with Finkel via U.S. Mail, sending him written clues which appear to be confusing and misleading about his family life, yet enough information to put the pieces of the puzzle together and compile a Murder Memoir. Finkel attends the trial and at the end he uncovers the «True Story.»

The film has several twists and turns which will keep you interested. It was cool to see both Hill and Franco play roles no one would ever think they would take on. Both actors handled this «True Story» film brilliantly! Not a must see, but definitely worth seeing if you want to experience these veteran actor Academy Award Nominees in diverse roles. I guess they were leaving it up to the audience on whether or not James Franco’s Chris killed his family or not, for those who knew nothing of the case or read the book because they failed to really focus on the grisly murdered family. I wondered that as I watched this interesting, but never elevated back-and-forth, accused and writer relationship. Johan Hill did fine as Mike, but just as he said in the movie: there’s enough here for an entire book – not just an article, I felt that this movie was basically an article on the events and not the whole story. Mercifully, the strange, but severely underdeveloped relationship between the men, kept me intrigued. And while I can see where the focus was from the screenplay writer and director, it’s sad that the brutal murders of three innocent children and their mother seem completely incidental and almost meaningless.

Had his movie been more fleshed out and gave more to all angles vs. just a weird bond, I might have liked it more. Instead we get a 99 minute, couple of chapters of a grander and more interesting, albeit depressing story.

I had been looking forward to True Story since I first saw the trailer in December. And then I read reviews tonight on it and was pretty worried. I actually almost didn’t go to the theater to see it. I almost considered waiting for the DVD (or Digital HD rather, Ha) release. I am glad I didn’t.

I am not going to recap the entire summary of the film, as if you are reading this, chances are you already know it, and if you don’t, the less you know the better. I just finished researching the true story of the film, and it appears this film is quite close to the truth. (Unlike the characters in the film)

This is a movie about deception involving characters that fabricate the truth to incredible lengths and spin endless webs of lies. One character to a lesser extent to the other, but I found it interesting how this film portrayed the similarities between these two men. The story is brilliantly woven, and extreme attention to detail is paid. The cinematography is beautiful, the acting is solid, this is just all around an exceptionally well made film. It’s tragic, yet very thought provoking.

The main two complaints I heard in critical reviews were that the film lacked suspense, and that it was a whole lot of buildup with no payoff. The no payoff criticism concerned me the most, as I can’t stand movies like that, and that criticism seemed to be the biggest people were making.

Realize going in, this is a psychological drama/thriller. I personally was riveted and in constant psychological suspense, but there isn’t any real physical suspense throughout the film. The suspense comes from a psychological place, falling victim to the constant mind games, and not knowing what the truth really is.

It’s hard for me to find this movie interesting. I didn’t really get it. But yes, the opening seemed so promising. Not to mention the character of Christian Longo himself. He’s some kind of crazy person or even a psycho, perhaps? He’s so unpredictable. Looks stupid but turned out to be smart and so deceiving. This was actually so good, but I couldn’t stop thinking that there was something missing. Why Longo chooses to use Finkle’s identity was not so well explained. Maybe the dialogue which was not so strong. To me, the story was just not so well explored.

This movie is based on a memoir of Michael Finkel. I usually love movies based on true story, but not this one.Sorry. I don’t know. It’s just not easy to grasp. I need to consult Wikipedia to fill the holes in my head.

Sadly, there is not much to say about True Story. It’s a crime/mystery ‘thriller’ (labeling this a thriller is questionable) that plays out just as you would expect. There were far too few surprises to speak of, which the movie seemed to be moving toward. Everything here felt like ‘the calm before the storm’ but when it came time for the storm, there was nothing there. The story in itself is quite interesting, a murder taking on the identity of a writer which leads to the two interacting and trying to determine the motive behind such a weird act. But nothing ever comes of it, at least nothing interesting or thought provoking. True Story is a straightforward crime drama that finishes as a courtroom drama.

The acting was decent enough, a strong cast, but the camera work tries to force the creepy persona of James Franco down our throats with a ton of close of shots of his face. It was difficult to see a monster, he may look scruffy but down under there was no beast to be found here. The character of Longo was never creepy enough to carry the movie (Hopkins had 13 minutes of screen time in Silence of the Lambs and created a truly frightening monster).

So while the trailer might look appealing, just now that it’s quite deceptive (just like the main theme of the movie). Like I said, everything found here was too calm for its own good, there was no huge reveal or anything like that to make this movie interesting. Certainly a forgettable movie within Franco and Hill’s growing filmographies.

I did not see that coming. James Franco and Jonah Hill together in a movie that is not a comedy.

Sure, out of the hilarious cast of This is the End, it would make the most since that these two would do drama, but still, I went into this movie expecting it to be a laughable mess, but was really amazed how well done it was.

You got to get over the fact that it’s Franco and Hill. Individually the two of them doing drama is a lot easier to swallow, especially Jonah with things like Money Ball and Wolf of Wall Street on his resume. You can take it serious when the two are apart, but together you’re expecting comedy.

What’s interesting about True Story is that Hill and Franco are playing the archetypes that you’d expect from them, and because of this, the movie could have easily worked as a comedy. It was Hill and Franco doing what you seen them do a million times in comedies but doing it in a drama piece. It does not make the movie better (it may have done better if they made it a comedy), but it made the movie more interesting.

Both men did a fine job with the material, it was well acted by everyone involved. I would recommend giving it a shot.

This is not a comedy-with Jonah & James, you might have thought that it would be-and it is based on a true story-I bet you did not see that coming, from the title-about a man accused of the disturbing crime of killing his wife and 3 children. Jonah plays a reporter for the New York Times that gets fired because he lied about some details of a story he turned in- sounds kind of like the Brian Williams story where he was caught enhancing a story. James plays the man that allegedly slaughtered his entire family- thankfully, the actual crimes are not shown but they are talked about. Jonah receives a phone call from Ethan, informing him about James and his sordid past. At first, Jonah does not understand the purpose of calling him until he hears that when James was caught, he was using Jonah’s identity to hide. Of course Jonah wants to know why James picked him and so he contacts James in prison to try to get some answers. Felicity plays Jonah’s girlfriend, who does not like or trust James. There is a lot of back and forth between Jonah & James with doubts and issues of trust popping up and what or who to believe. As the end credits start, you learn answers about who really did what and what their situation is now. It is a compelling story. It’s rated «R» for language and disturbing material and has a running time of 1 hour & 39 minutes. It’s not one that I would buy on DVD-once was enough-but it would be a good rental.

‘TRUE STORY’: Three and a Half Stars (Out of Five)

A dramatic crime-thriller, starring Jonah Hill and James Franco! It definitely takes a little while to get used to. The story revolves around a reporter investigating a man accused of murdering his wife and children, in Oregon, for a book he’s writing. It’s based on the memoir of Michael Finkel, the reporter that Hill plays in the film; while Franco plays the accused killer. The movie was directed by Rupert Goold and scripted by David Kajganich and Goold. It’s a bit of a mess, but it’s still worth watching and interesting enough (in some ways).

Michael Finkel (Hill) was a rising successful reporter, working for the New York Times, until his employers discovered he falsified information in one of his stories; he was terminated because of it. He later learned that a man, named Christian Longo (Franco), was using his name to hide out under, in Mexico, until he was arrested for murdering his wife and children. He was fascinated by this and decided to meet Longo, while he was being held in a prison, in Oregon. Upon meeting Finkel, Longo told the reporter that he’d tell him his side of the story, if he taught him how to write; and kept everything he told him a secret. Finkel agreed to the arrangement, because he saw it as a big opportunity to get his career back on track. He quickly learned that Longo, and his stories, were not as they first appeared.

At first I definitely didn’t buy Hill, in the dramatic leading man role; but I couldn’t decide if it was me not giving him enough of a chance, or Hill not being the right actor for the part. I also didn’t think much of Franco’s acting, in this movie, at first either. Then seeing the two of them, on screen together, made the movie seem even less realistic. After some time, a lot of it, I finally found their characters believable, and I became fully intrigued in the movie as well. By this time the movie was almost over though; it does come to a pretty satisfying and entertaining conclusion at least. I think it’s nice to see Hill and Franco doing diversifying work, and I think they’re both good in this movie, but they’re a lot better in other films (especially their comedic work; that’s what they’re both best at). As for the movie itself, the script could have used some more rewrites and the directing isn’t that impressive either; the director and co-writer are both pretty inexperienced though (so it’s somewhat understandable).

‘True Story’ explores a scary real-life incident & tries to make an awkward friendship tale out of it. Well, almost. And sadly, not all of it works, but with some powerful moments & Strong Performances going its way, the film scores on some levels.

‘True Story’ begins grippingly & you’re invested in the journey of these two disgraced men, one far more than the other of course. But, the pace slackens as the narrative proceeds. The second-hour lacks the punch, although the goings-on become quite intense in its penultimate moments. Nonetheless, the Writing needed some stronger stuff.

David Kajganich & Rupert Goold’s Screenplay, which is Based on the memoir of the same name by Michael Finkel, is greatly Written in parts, but doesn’t come across as solid overall. As mentioned earlier, the second-hour doesn’t have the moments it should have. Rupert Goold’s Direction is controlled & well-done. Cinematography is atmospheric. Editing is finely done.

Performance-Wise: Jonah Hill is in very good form, yet again! Hill, now a versatile actor known by all, sinks his teeth into the part & enacts the disgraced man, with great maturity. James Franco is top-notch. His performance is so good, that you actually want to believe him & want him free of the heinous crime he’s accused of. Felicity Jones, besides looking stunning, takes a terrific turn, as the morally strong minded woman.

On the whole, ‘True Story’ isn’t very engaging always, but the performances are.

A true story is not necessarily an interesting one, a fact proved by this mess of a movie. The easy pickings for criticism begin with Jonah Hill – a very talented and enjoyable actor who is out of his depth in this leading role. After turning in excellent (and, to some, surprising) dramatic performances in Oscar-nominated supporting roles in Moneyball and the Wolf of Wall St., Hill, or someone in his camp, decided it was time to take a crack at a dramatic leading man role. I’m not saying he can’t or won’t someday be successful in that effort, but this wasn’t time. Nor was it completely his fault.

The script and the direction lack clarity and vision. And, as the two greatest opponents in any communications endeavor are confusion and boredom, True Story pulls of the cardinal double no-no. First time feature film Director Rupert Goold had a potentially interesting story and some capable talent in his hands but simply didn’t execute on it. The montages that fail to advance the story in an interesting manner are just one example maddening displays of wasted opportunity. The staging is often flat. The edits, at times, seem to happen because they can rather than for any good reason. The strange thing to me is, watching this film in a packed free preview audience, there were more than a few people that seemed to think it was at least «okay». I could be snarky and say they got what they paid for it, but I’ll take the high road. My opinion, like all, should be taken with a grain of salt.

Sometimes just because an incident is true does not mean it will translate into a good film such is the case here.

True Story stars Jonah Hill as Mike Finkel a passionate journalist who was sacked from the New York Times for embellishing a story.

James Franco plays Christian Longo a man who killed his wife and kids and when arrested on the run in Mexico he had assumed the identity of Mike Finkel.

Is Longo playing a long game in order to rope in a disgraced journalist for his own ends? Did Longo actually murder his own family or is he protecting someone else?

Anyhow the two meet and Finkel sees this way to get himself a lucrative book deal and rehabilitate his reputation. Longo wants an exchange of favours and requires writing tips, is it creative writing?

Obviously this quid pro quo routine brings to mind Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs but Franco is no Anthony Hopkins. In fact despite his Oscar nomination for 127 Hours and presenting the Oscars in 2011 I think he has been caught out as someone who is not that strong an actor and he is certainly not an all round entertainer.

The film needs you to think that Longo has a sinister agenda, something to hide but there is no pay off. There is a clumsy scene where Finkel’s girlfriend calls him a narcissist. A disorder that the real life killer suffers from and this was badly crow barred into the film.

The film is badly written and worse still despite being based on real events you know its not all true. Finkel in the film has doubts about Longo and realises he has been used. When the movie ends we are told that both of them still keep regularly in touch.

In the movie business, casting is critical, both for the creative process and for a movie’s potential profitability. A good cast can make a good script into a great movie or even turn a mediocre script into a good movie. A bad cast can ruin even great scripts and thwart the best directors. Of course, a cast starts with individuals – and certain questions that must be answered. Do the cast members fit their roles physically (at least coming close to what playing that character demands) and do each of the actors and actresses have the chops and, if the film is a drama, the gravitas to pull off the role? And what about perceptions? Audience members have opinions and they’re the ones who vote with their dollars and determine whether a movie is ultimately a success or a failure. Simply put, will audiences in general, accept a given actor or actress in a specific role? Now, the best actors and actresses can overcome some of these potential casting problems, but very few, if any, can overcome them all. Unfortunately, the questions and issues I just raised could be seen as a problem for «True Story» (R, 1:40).

This film is the (hmmm trying not to mention the film’s title too repetitively or make a bad pun here ) it’s the Factual Narrative behind the jailhouse conversations between journalist Michael Finkel and accused killer Christian Longo. Finkel (Jonah Hill) had just lost his job as a highly-regarded New York Times reporter for making some factual errors with a major story. Longo (James Franco) went to Mexico after allegedly murdering his wife and three small children. In Mexico, Longo was giving his name as «Mike Finkel», including at the time of his arrest. When Finkel hears about this, he travels from his cabin in Montana to a county jail in Oregon to ask Longo «Why»? Why Longo appropriated Finkel’s name and, somewhat more importantly, why Longo murdered his own family. Does Longo genuinely just admire Finkel, or is he taking advantage of Finkel’s desperation for a new writing gig and current reputation for playing fast and loose with the facts to use Finkel for his own ends. And DID Longo murder his family? Much of the film portrays the encounters between Finkel and Longo. Finkel uses various techniques to get to know Longo and draw out his story. Longo talks to Finkel regularly, but he also writes long letters to Finkel – with pictures. Finkel writes back, and continues to visit Longo in jail – the only reporter to whom Longo will talk. Finkel soon decides that Longo’s story is more than a newspaper article that he can try selling to the highest bidder, but rather a book that he can try selling to the highest bidder. Longo agrees to tell Finkel his story as long as it isn’t published until after the trial and if Finkel will give Longo writing lessons. An exchange of favors and information begins – and develops into a kind of friendship. Finkel, seeing the potential for a big payday wants to get Longo’s entire story and, chastened by his recent fall from grace, knows he needs to get the story right – a goal that becomes more complicated than it sounds. Finkel’s girlfriend, Jill (Felicity Jones) supports him but is concerned that he might be giving Longo too much leeway and too big of a benefit of the doubt in the pursuit of truth.

«True Story» suffers from poor casting and a meaningless story. Hill is a good actor (with two Oscar nominations) and Franco is an adequate actor (with one nom). Both are known more for comedies. Knowing their resumes and that they’re friends in real life, seeing them sitting across from each other in totally serious roles was distracting. I just kept imagining them laughing between takes or about to break into comic banter in the midst of the drama. But maybe that’s just me. More importantly, were they each up to the dramatic challenge? Again, in my opinion, no. Franco’s acting wasn’t sinister enough to make me think he was dangerous, intense enough to make me believe he was innocent or deep enough to convince me he was serious. Hill I just couldn’t buy as a seasoned journalist. Same with the Oregon reporter played by Ethan Suplee, who is also known mainly for his comedic acting. Jones was good, as was Robert John Burke playing a cop, but that wasn’t enough.

My other big problem with «True Story» is that it just didn’t have much of a point. It’s a little bit «Primal Fear» and a little bit «The Usual Suspects», but the script wasn’t as smart, the characters as engaging or the ending nearly as satisfying as those earlier films. This movie literally settles for a wink and a nod when it could have said something interesting about our legal system or at least given us a few thrills on the way to its lackluster conclusion. This movie isn’t terrible, but it’s not very good either. I’m giving this one a «C». I’m not recommending it (like something in the «B» or «A» range), but I don’t think it deserves trashing («D» or «F»). I hope you’ll decide for yourself. Actress Joey King, who portrays Gypsy, studied her unique voice and says that it was a crucial part of getting into character for the role. Mistakenly, many viewers have assumed that it’s Joey King’s real voice, but it isn’t. «It’s just doing your research — watching videos, listening to her speak, and just really trying to get it in my brain as much as possible,» the actress told Vulture in March 2019, adding that at first the studio assumed she would use her own voice instead of trying to match Gypsy’s. «I’m very happy that I was able to do her voice and become her more completely.»

It is believed that Dee Dee was suffering from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a mental disorder in which a caregiver (usually a parent) applies an imaginary illness or injury to a person under his or her care.

When Gypsy became a teenager, her mother told family and friends that she had the mind of a 7-year-old. To make sure Gypsy stayed under her control, Dee Dee home-schooled her, kept a watchful eye on her Internet usage, and stayed with her at all times. During interviews, Dee Dee can often be seen clutching Gypsy’s hand, and it is believed that she would squeeze her daughter’s hand in order to let her know if she was answering a question correctly.

Despite Aleah’s name being changed for the series (likely for legal reasons), it seems that her friendship with Gypsy is depicted rather accurately. They were neighbors and would spend time discussing various things, including boys. «She would show interest in like different boys and try to ask me advice on like, you know, how do you approach them? How do you like, kiss a boy?» says Aleah. As seen in the Hulu series, Dee Dee didn’t like the boy talk. «My daughter has the mentality of a child,» Aleah recalls Dee Dee telling her. «You’re talking to her about teenage girl things.»

Yes, but only loosely. Michelle Dean’s BuzzFeed article that was the basis for The Act TV show mentions a real-life 35-year-old man that Gypsy met at the Visioncon sci-fi convention in 2011. However, their relationship didn’t evolve gradually via texts over time. Instead, Gypsy tried to escape the convention with him that day, making it as far as his hotel room. Dee Dee learned where they were from people who had seen them, and she arrived soon after with counterfeit papers that claimed Gypsy was a minor (in reality, Gypsy was 19 at the time).

The show gives the man the name Scott and stretches out Gypsy’s crush on him as they exchange texts. It culminates with her running away to be with him when he’s hospitalized. Dee Dee arrives at his home the same night with the counterfeit papers that state Gypsy is a minor. The real-life incident purportedly infuriated Dee Dee so much that she used a hammer to smash the family computer.

Did Dee Dee really tie Gypsy to the bed?

Yes. Fact-checking The Act revealed this to be true. Gypsy claimed that Dee Dee tied her to the bed for two weeks after she tried to run away. She claimed that he followed through on the deal after the murder, despite pleading with him (as Victor) to stop.

As described in the documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest, their meet-up at the movie theater in 2015 to watch Cinderella unfolded much like it does on the Hulu TV show. Nick came to the theater alone and Dee Dee was disturbed by him trying to get close to Gypsy, who was dressed in her Cinderella costume. In The Act, Nick Godejohn (Calum Worthy) phones Gypsy’s mother Dee Dee (Patricia Arquette) and tells her he’s the guy who was there when they saw Cinderella. He tells her that he’s been dating Gypsy for two years and that he plans on spending the rest of his life with her and having children (the real-life Nick and Gypsy even picked out names for their children). It’s hard to imagine what Dee Dee would have done to Gypsy in real life if Nick had actually made the call.

Did Dee Dee hate Gypsy’s boyfriend Nick?

Yes. The Act fact check confirms that here the Hulu show is mostly in line with the true story. «She got jealous, because I was spending a little too much attention on him,» Gypsy later stated on ABC News, «and she had ordered me to stay away from him. And needless to say, that was a very long argument that lasted a couple weeks. Yelling, throwing things, calling me names: bitch, slut, whore.» Not long after the fight is when Gypsy began thinking about murdering her mother. «It was not because I hated her,» she said. «It was because I wanted to escape her.»

Did Lacey’s mom, Mel, break into Dee Dee and Gypsy’s home after a mysterious Facebook post?

Not exactly. In answering the question, «How accurate is The Act?» we learned that it was another neighbor, David Blanchard (no relation to Dee Dee and Gypsy), who climbed through a window to find out what happened. Friends and neighbors had indeed become alarmed after two mysterious Facebook posts (one a post and another a comment) showed up on June 14, 2015 under Dee Dee and Gypsy’s joint account «Dee Gyp Blancharde». The post read, «That Bitch is dead!» As friends began expressing their concern via comments, one particular comment stood out, «I f**ken SLASHED THAT FAT PIG AND RAPED HER SWEET INNOCENT DAUGHTER. HER SCREAM WAS SO F**KEN LOUD LOL». Below is a screenshot of the actual Facebook post and comment that Gypsy Rose Blanchard posted to speed up the discovery of her mother Dee Dee’s body.

Yes. As we studied The Act‘s historical accuracy, we discovered that this is exactly what happened in real life. They traced the IP address of the two shocking Facebook posts that showed up in Dee Dee and Gypsy’s joint account. The IP address led them to a home located 600 miles away from Springfield, Missouri in Big Bend, Wisconsin. It was the home of Nick Godejohn, Gypsy’s boyfriend.

Had Dee Dee really been in jail for six months when Gypsy was very young?

No. In exploring the The Act fact vs. fiction, we learned that the real Dee Dee Blanchard had only spent one night in jail. The series conflates this to a dramatic six months in prison for writing bad checks (Dee Dee did get in trouble at times for that type of crime). This was most likely done in an effort to build up the tension between Dee Dee and her mother, Emma (Margo Martindale), who cares for Gypsy while Dee Dee is in prison.

Did Dee Dee kill her mother, Emma (Gypsy’s grandmother)?

This is what Dee Dee’s family believes and it’s conveyed in The Act when we see Dee Dee (Patricia Arquette) withholding food from her mother, Emma, before she dies. «To leave your mama dirty and asking for food, and [not] feed her, that’s evil,» Laura, Dee Dee’s stepmother, says in the HBO Gypsy Rose Blanchard documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest.

After Dee Dee and Rod Blanchard divorced, Dee Dee and Gypsy went to live with Dee Dee’s father Claude and her stepmother Laura. In the documentary, Laura says that Dee Dee tried to poison her by slipping weed killer into her food. Laura ended up bedridden for nine months. Dee Dee was confronted at a family get-together for her control over Gypsy and Laura’s illness. They kicked Dee Dee out and she moved to Slidell, after which Laura made a complete recovery.

Did Dee Dee put Gypsy in a wheelchair after Gypsy fell off a trampoline?

No. In real life, Dee Dee put Gypsy in a wheelchair following a minor motorcycle accident that she had with her grandfather (Dee Dee’s father).

Were Dee Dee’s last words to Gypsy really, «Don’t hurt me, sweetie»?

Yes. In the HBO Gypsy Rose Blanchard documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest, Gypsy said that these were in fact her mother’s last words to her. In the Hulu series, Dee Dee says this to Gypsy as Gypsy is saying goodnight to her, just before she lets Nick into the house to commit the murder, which in real life happened at approximately 3 am on June 10, 2015. It’s true that Gypsy provided the knife, which she had stolen from Walmart. She left rubber gloves for Nick outside the front door. She stayed in the bathroom and covered her ears while Nick stabbed her mother in her mother’s bedroom. The real Nick Godejohn said that Dee Dee screamed for Gypsy three times, but she never came.

«I heard her scream once, and there was more screaming, but not like the kind in a horror film,» Gypsy told 20/20, «just like a startled scream, and she called out my name, about three or four times, and at that point, I wanted to go help her so bad, but I was so afraid to get up, because my body wouldn’t move, and then everything just went quiet.»

Did Nick really forget to buy a bus ticket for Gypsy?

Did Gypsy and Nick mail the knife to Nick’s house?

Yes. In researching The Act true story, we verified that like in the Hulu series, Gypsy and Nick mailed the murder weapon to Nick’s house. During Nick Godejohn’s interrogation, he said that Gypsy had the mailing envelope ready for the knife. Gypsy addressed the envelope, and when it arrived at Nick’s house, they hid it in his closet in his bedroom.

Was Gypsy’s father out of the picture?

For the most part, the situation with Gypsy’s father, Rod Blanchard, seems to line up with what’s seen in The Act. Dee Dee and Rod divorced before Gypsy was born. Gypsy was led to believe her dad was a deadbeat who had abandoned her. Dee Dee even told friends and doctors that Rod was a drug addict who didn’t want anything to do with them. However, like on the show, most of this appears to have been untrue. During his occasional visits with Gypsy, Dee Dee always stayed in the room. He had remained a part of Gypsy’s life until she was around 10-years-old, but it became more difficult to see Gypsy after Dee Dee moved away with her. She always made an excuse as to why he couldn’t visit. He continued to send child support payments.

«She was always scared that I would get close to Gypsy. It bothered me. But I was always hoping that Gypsy would get old enough that one day we could bond,» he explained to Fox News. «It got hard, it really did. But I didn’t want to push it too far. Dee Dee had full custody and could cut me off completely from any kind of relationship we already had. There was a fine line I had to walk with her.»

Did Gypsy Rose Blanchard have any real medical conditions?

What was Gypsy Rose’s punishment for her involvement in her mother Dee Dee’s murder?

Gypsy was convicted of second-degree murder and is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for her involvement in her mother Dee Dee’s death. She will become eligible for parole after serving 85% of her sentence, or eight-and-a-half years. As for Gypsy’s boyfriend, Nick Godejohn, he was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Fact-checking The Act uncovered that the real Nick Godejohn was arrested in 2013 for watching pornography on his laptop inside a McDonald’s for nearly nine hours, during which time he was seen with his hand down his pants masturbating. Nick claimed that he was just scratching himself.

Did actress Joey King speak to the real Gypsy Rose Blanchard prior to filming the series?

«No, I was not able to get in contact with her,» Joey King said in a Build Series interview. In a separate interview with the Today show, the actress elaborated, «Legally, I wasn’t allowed to. I don’t even understand all the reasons.» Instead, the actress turned to Michelle Dean, who wrote the Buzzfeed article about Gypsy and had been in contact with her. Dean was also a producer and writer on The Act Hulu series.

Of Gypsy, actress Joey King said, «If she sees it one day, I think it’ll be really, really hard for her to watch. I think it’ll be hard for them to watch other people play them, number one, and also this is like reliving your truth, and so I can’t even imagine what that would be like if they saw it.»

Since the release of the Hulu TV show, neighbors have become frustrated with all the tourists driving by, many stopping outside of the house and even peering through the windows. As of 2019, the house in which Dee Dee Blanchard was murdered remains empty. The pink house seen in The Act TV series is a copy that was built in Rincon, Georgia where the series was filmed.

Does the real Gypsy Rose Blanchard approve of The Act?

No. Corresponding via email, the real Gypsy told the women’s magazine Bustle:

«I am unable to watch The Act. However, I feel it is very unfair and unprofessional that producers and co-producer Michelle Dean has used my actual name and story without my consent, and the life rights to do so. Therefore, there will be legal action taken against the show’s creators. I want to share my story and bring awareness about Munchausen by proxy, in the hopes that I can encourage those who might be experiencing abuse to speak up, because someone WILL listen. Kristy Blanchard, Gypsy’s stepmother, said The Act‘s writer and co-producer, Michelle Dean, cut off all contact with the family while the series was being made. The family also claims that they were promised some of the profits from the series, which never happened. This explains why actress Joey King was never allowed to meet the real Gypsy.

A t first, Isaac “Ike” Herschkopf, a psychiatrist who talked of having a “direct” approach with his “clients,” seemed like just the person Marty Markowitz needed. When Markowitz started seeing Herschkopf in 1981, he felt overrun with responsibilities, was grieving the loss of his parents and having inter-family issues over control of his family’s fabrics company. And the therapy did help. But soon, Herschkopf had extended control over other aspects of Markowitz’s life far beyond the boundaries of a doctor-patient relationship. Over the next 30 years, Markowitz would later allege, Herschkopf took control of his finances, moved into and pretended to own his home in the Hamptons and orchestrated his estrangement from his family. Their relationship ended in 2010, when Markowitz began the process of taking back control of his life and calling attention to what Herschkopf did to him.

The strange, sad story became the subject of the 2019 Wondery and Bloomberg Media podcast The Shrink Next Door, which was adapted into an Apple TV+ drama of the same name, released on Nov. 12, starring Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd as Markowitz and Herschkopf, respectively. In breaking down how this psychiatrist was able to exert total control over a patient, both versions of The Shrink Next Door illuminate the dangers of abusive and manipulative professional relationships. Here’s the true story behind The Shrink Next Door and what to know about the real life figures whose stories it tells.

A neighbor’s discovery inspires The Shrink Next Door podcast

Journalist Joe Nocera assumed Ike Herschkopf, a New York-based therapist, owned the vacation house next door to his in the Hamptons and that a man named Marty Markowitz, whom he saw taking care of the grounds, was the property manager. When he later found out that Markowitz, in fact, owned the house, and that Herschkopf simply acted like he owned it, he began investigating.

Nocera discovered a deeply layered story of manipulation and betrayal; over six (and some bonus) episodes, he breaks down how Markowitz came to be in a position vulnerable enough to cede control to Herschkopf—and how, after decades, he finally cut him off.

How a psychiatrist inserted himself into a patient’s life

From the outset, it’s clear Ike Herschkopf is not a typical therapist, a quality hinted at, in Paul Rudd’s depiction in Shrink, by his unconventional practice of taking Will Ferrell’s Markowitz on walks around New York instead of sitting in his office and directly confronting the sources of his patient’s problems. Rudd’s Herschkopf, in accordance with Nocera’s description of the real figure, is bombastic and status-obsessed, constantly showing off pictures of himself posing alongside celebrities.

The Shrink Next Door podcast documents how he used his position of power and influence, as a psychiatrist trusted by patients, to take advantage of people—like Markowitz, who had established himself as a millionaire through his family’s company, Associated Fabrics Corporation—for his benefit. In real life, Herschkopf quickly situated himself in positions where he could make decisions that had actual impacts on Markowitz and his family. Slowly, as the years went on, Herschkopf isolated Markowitz from his family and friends and pushed him away from romantic relationships, often through the advice he gave Markowitz about how to handle these personal ties. He installed himself as the president of Markowitz’s company and opened a charity foundation with (mostly) Markowitz’s money.

In a July 2021 interview with Forward, Markowitz described his time with Herschkopf as “living a lie.”

“Ike sucked me into this cult of Ike and I was spending six or seven hours a week with him, he kept me constantly busy transcribing his handwritten books, throwing these parties, and I didn’t appreciate what was going on,” Markowitz said. “He didn’t let me have a girlfriend. I would go on a date, and he’d call her a gold digger. He would say, ‘Everyone is out to get you, I’m going to protect you.’ And I was stupid enough to buy it.”

Among the more heartbreaking losses incurred by Markowitz due to his ties to Herschkopf is that of his sister, Phyllis Shapiro, portrayed in the Apple TV+ series by Kathryn Hahn. Shapiro, who also worked at the fabric company, came to realize that her brother was consulting Herschkopf on business decisions instead of making them himself. After seeing Herschkopf herself for a therapy session, Shapiro decided she didn’t trust him. As Markowitz spent more time with the psychiatrist, he started growing impatient with what he saw as Shapiro’s lack of work ethic. Eventually, she quit, and Markowitz stopped speaking with her.

Later, in an effort to get her brother’s attention, Shapiro stole money from him—at that point, Herschkopf convinced Markowitz to cut her off for good. They didn’t communicate again for many years.

As Nocera asks in the podcast, how could Markowitz allow all this to happen? He says, “I felt I had no choice.” So vulnerable was his mental state, that Herschkopf’s hold over him proved irresistible. In another episode, speaking about the experience of being unable to recognize he was under manipulation, he says, “It was so over the top, you had to want to see that.” For Markowitz, the damage is not just that he lost so much time to Herschkopf’s influence—it’s in the difficulty of rebuilding his life in the years since their relationship ended.

How Markowitz got free—and what happened to Herschkopf

For a long time, and especially after he cut off his sister, Herschkopf was essentially Markowitz’s only friend. Even as Herschkopf took more and more of Markowitz’s money and made Markowitz do an increasing number of chores and errands for him, Markowitz saw him as the only person he could depend on and trust. The unbalanced dynamic continued until 2010, when Markowitz underwent hernia surgery. In the days following the operation, Markowitz noted that Herschkopf did not check on him at all—and questioned their friendship.

“I knew that he knew that he was the only person in my life,” he told Nocera. “All of these frustrations, all of these issues, all of this anger came bursting out of me.”

With the help of some employees, who knew of Herschkopf as a business consultant under a different name, Markowitz sent a letter telling Herschkopf he no longer wanted to be his patient. Though the psychiatrist said he was making the wrong decision, Markowitz was done: he stopped responding, he took back his house and reunited with his sister. These days, Markowitz is looking to enjoy retirement and spend time with his girlfriend in Thailand.

In April 2021, following years of effort on Markowitz’s part to spotlight Herschkopf’s misdeeds, the psychiatrist was ordered to surrender his license to practice in New York. As the Shrink podcast revealed, Markowitz was not Herschkopf’s only victim; other former patients told Nocera the psychiatrist similarly took over their lives, convincing them to rewrite their wills to benefit the doctor or his family. The state’s Department of Health concluded that Herschkopf broke “minimal acceptable standards of care in the psychotherapeutic relationship.” In Nov. 2021, Herschkopf told the New York Times he plans to appeal the health department’s ruling.

The True Story Behind ‘The Courier’

A new spy thriller draws on the fascinating life—and whopping lies—of one of the U.K.’s most famous intelligence agents

In November 1960, Greville Wynne, a 41-year-old British businessman, sat down for a lunch that would change his life. His dining companion, Dickie Franks, revealed himself to be an officer of the British Secret Intelligence Service, also known as MI6, and asked Wynne for his help. An industrial sales consultant who regularly traveled through Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union representing British electrical and steel companies, Wynne was told it would be helpful if on his next trip, he could arrange for a meeting with a state committee in Moscow dedicated to developing opportunities with foreigners in science and technology, and report back on his conversations. Despite having no previous experience in intelligence work, Wynne was being recruited to serve as an MI6 agent.

Wynne agreed, and during his visit to Moscow the following month he wound up connecting with Oleg Penkovsky, a lieutenant colonel in the GRU (the Soviet Union’s foreign-intelligence agency) who was eager to leak high-level military information to Western powers. Penkovsky felt stunted in his career with GRU and expected that by helping the West for a year or two, he and his family could be relocated and build a better life, and that he would personally be showered with recognition and honor. Wynne went along, slightly concerned about whether Penkovsky was on the level and concerned about putting himself into a dangerous situation, kicking off what would be one of the most productive clandestine operations in Cold War history. Penkovsky’s information, and Wynne’s help in delivering it to British and American intelligence officers, would produce mountains of material, play a role in the Cuban Missile Crisis, and land both men in prison.

These events serve as the inspiration for The Courier, the new film starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Wynne and Georgian actor Merab Ninidze as Penkovsky, out in theaters on March 19. The film’s screenwriter, Tom O’Connor, found Wynne’s story of a nobody suddenly becoming a somebody compelling. “He just was an ordinary man who got thrust into this just extraordinary, life-altering situation that was going to define his existence forever,” says O’Connor. “The burden of that is hard to imagine.”

But as he began researching Wynne’s story, he learned that this ordinary man could also tell some extraordinary lies. In the late 1960s, after he had been imprisoned for his spycraft and could no longer assist MI6 nor the CIA, the amateur spy authored a pair of books: The Man From Moscow: The Story of Wynne and Penkovsky and The Man From Odessa, that were riddled with falsehoods.

“[Wynne], bless him, for all his wonderful work, was a menace and a fabricator,” says Nigel West, who has written numerous books on British and American intelligence organizations, including two books specifically about fabricators in the intelligence arena. “He just couldn’t tell the truth. It was pathological with him.”

While its standard for Hollywood films to take liberties with the facts, insert composite characters, devise imagined conversations, and smooth-out timelines to ensure a brisk pace, it’s less common for a based-on-a-true-story movie to have to be more truthful than the source material.

O’Connor makes clear that The Courier is “not a documentary,” even as he explains that he took pains to stick to the facts as much as they could be ascertained—drawing on works such as Jerrold L. Shecter and Peter S. Deriabin’s The Spy Who Saved the World: How a Soviet Colonel Changed the Course of the Cold War and other accounts that could be trusted more than Wynne’s own inventions.

“There’s a fair amount of source material from all different kinds of authors, so by reading everybody—not just Wynne’s books, but other historians, and the official history put out by the American side and the Soviet side — I was able to try and work out what made the most sense and what seemed liked disinformation,” says O’Connor.
