Kyle’s lips turned into a smirk, but his eyes were swirling with unknown emotions. It was quite different from the way he always smiled innocently and was nice to me. The hair on my arms raised as goosebumps appeared over my skin from the uncomfortable atmosphere.

“Yes, of course. It was, so I’ll do as I please.”

I looked Kyle straight in the eye at the incomprehensible words, but he didn’t answer to help me understand. It only clouded my mind further with bewilderment.

“We didn’t do anything you really hated.”

“If you’re going to turn your back on this, can you really ask me to behave with you like before after all we’ve done? What if I’m more disobedient than you think?”

There were words that crossed my mind with no meaning. My brows furrowed as I tilted my head, but Kyle stopped talking. I had no chance to ask what he meant. He just disappeared from my sight without another word.

I had the consciousness to be nervous about what could take place in the future. Something felt off, and it could be that I hit a nerve with Kyle. My mouth went dry at the idea.

‘Come to think of it. What happened to Kazef, Hayle, and Kyle in the original story….’

I pondered over the novel’s plot, when I tried to remember their future that I had forgotten.

Kazef eventually inherited the Marquis’ title and took over the family…. Hayle went to the East for a long time to engage in the East trade. Kyle became a knight that guarded the land of the North and swore his allegiance to the imperial family.

Anyway, none of them ended up getting married for some reason.

I had another justification to be uneasy. It was dangerous that they had no planned marriages. It would have been better if there was a designated fiancee for each brother, but they had no beloved woman in the novel’s original plot.

This situation might get out of hand if I’m not careful.

Why do people fall in love? And why are some forms of love long-lasting while others are so fleeting? Psychologists and researchers have proposed several different theories of love to explain how it forms as well as how it endures.

Love is a basic human emotion. But understanding how and why it happens is not necessarily easy. In fact, for a long time, many suggested that love was something too primal, mysterious, and spiritual for science to ever fully understand.

Still, many have tried to learn more about this feel-good emotion. Here are five of the major theories proposed to explain love and other emotional attachments.

Liking vs. Loving

In 1970, psychologist Zick Rubin proposed an explanation for the difference between liking and loving. Sometimes we experience a great amount of appreciation and admiration for others. We enjoy spending time with a person and want to be around them. This is «liking,» according to Rubin, and doesn’t necessarily qualify as love.

Love is much deeper, more intense, and includes a strong desire for physical intimacy and contact. People who are «in like» enjoy each other’s company, while those who are «in love» care as much about the other person’s needs as they do their own.

Rubin believed that romantic love is made up of three elements:

Based on these elements, Rubin devised a questionnaire to assess a person’s attitudes toward others. He found that scales ranging from liking to loving provided support for his conception of love.

The Color Wheel Model of Love

Attachment Theory of Love

In 1987, Cindy Hazan and Phillip Shaver, two researchers from the University of Denver, theorized that romantic love is a biosocial process similar to how children form attachments with their parents. Their theory is modeled on psychologist John Bowlby’s attachment theory.

According to Hazan and Shaver’s attachment theory of love, a person’s attachment style is partially formed by the relationship they had with their parents in childhood. This same basic style then continues into adulthood, where it becomes part of their romantic relationships.

The three styles of adult attachment are:

Based on Hazan and Shaver’s research, secure attachment is the most common style. This is followed by the avoidant attachment style, then anxious/ambivalent attachment.

Hazan and Shaver also proposed that one’s experiences in love and attachment affect their beliefs, which affect their relationship outcomes. It is a cyclical process that can be okay for people with a more secure attachment style but could also create issues for someone who is avoidant or anxious/ambivalent in their relationships.

Compassionate vs. Passionate Love

In 1988, psychologist Elaine Hatfield proposed that there are two basic types of love: compassionate love and passionate love.

Hatfield suggests that passionate love arises when cultural expectations encourage falling in love, when the person meets one’s preconceived ideas of ideal love, and when one experiences heightened physiological arousal in the presence of the other person.

Passionate love is transitory, according to Hatfield, usually lasting between 6 and 30 months. Ideally, passionate love leads to compassionate love, which is far more enduring.

While most people desire relationships that combine the security and stability of compassionate love with intense passionate love, Hatfield believes that this is rare.

This villain trope is for the characters we love to hate.

«Love to hate» is a term used to describe villains we enjoy. We love them for various reasons, such as excellent character development, being hilarious, getting the best writing, having a memorable personality, or being lucky enough to have a top-notch performance by their actor. But at the same time, the fans still want to see the baddie get their comeuppance in the end. There is still hatred, after all. Also named Heel Hate.

Faux Affably Evil, Affably Evil, Laughably Evil, Magnificent Bastard, and Card-Carrying Villain are sub tropes for different reasons. Being a Large Ham definitely helps (see also Evil Is Hammy). An Anti-Villain is often one of these due to the character development they often get. A villain who’s The Scrappy or Creator’s Pet is typically not eligible for this trope as are some villains who cross the Moral Event Horizon.

Not to be confused with Draco in Leather Pants, which is when a villain’s fandom will gloss over the actual nastiness of a villain and insist that he or she is just misunderstood, i.e they throw their sympathy to them even though they don’t deserve it; in this, fans acknowledge the atrocities the villain has done but they like them for their villain traits. Also not to be confused with when the heroes would love to hate the villain, but just can’t manage it.

This is someone whom the fans enjoy and even maybe respect because of their unapologetic evilness. Their shamelessness is cathartic to us, and they retain their awesomeness as time goes by without Villain Decay.

In order to be eligible, a villain must be generally well-regarded/well-liked by said fandom while the same fandom still acknowledges they’re a villain. Being here means that said villain is part of the pantheon of great villains. Therefore, it is possible for a Complete Monster to be listed here (for example, The Joker, Pennywise and Red Skull).

Compare Hate Sink, where a character’s intended role is to be hated by the audience. Also compare Jerkass Dissonance, where a character becomes beloved in spite of being so detestable. They can fall under the Love to Hate category if viewers find them entertaining despite being someone to root against. Can also overlap with Rooting for the Empire if the villain is so highly entertaining that the audience actually wants them to win.

According to clinical psychologist Kristina Hallett, Ph.D., research has defined two major types of interpersonal love: passionate love (which is what we think of as romantic love, involving attraction and sexual desire) and attachment (also known as compassionate love, which can be between caregivers and children, between long-term romantic partners, and other deeply bonded relationships).

Nevertheless, she adds, «We can certainly love people in a multitude of ways, and often do. When we think about the different Greek words for love, it’s possible to see how these connect to the greater categories of passionate and compassionate love.»

The question of what it means to love someone has been the inspiration behind so many songs for a reason: It’s a very complicated emotion that we all experience differently. Take the five love languages, for example. Everyone has their own way of giving and receiving love, especially with different people.

Below are the nine types of love described in the Greek language and how to navigate each one:

Eros (passionate love)

Eros is all about romance, passion, and attraction. It describes the intoxicating and thrilling emotions that the initial stages of a relationship can induce. «Relationships often begin with passion, including infatuation and attraction,» marriage therapist Jason B. Whiting, Ph.D., LMFT, tells mbg. «As exciting as this is, it is mostly a fusion element, designed to draw people together.»

Hallett adds, «Sexual interest, lust, or passion don’t necessarily evolve into lasting compassionate love.»

A tip for eros:

Enjoy each other’s company and the attraction you feel for each other while it is fresh and new. Over time, this type of love will often transition into another type—or simply fade away.

Pragma (enduring love)

Pragma is sometimes translated to practical love, referencing the kind of love grounded in duty, commitment, and practicality. While this might apply well to the type of love that blossoms in an arranged marriage, this is also the love you see in long-standing relationships and life partnerships—like when you see an old couple that’s been together for decades and decades. These are couples who find a way to make it work over time.

Pragma requires a commitment to each other and might be thought of as a conscious choice or perhaps as the type of love that takes years to develop through bonding and shared experiences. Whiting notes: «The brain’s response to a cherished long-term partner looks like contentment, caring, and nurturing.»

Hallett adds that eros can develop into pragma, and, in fact, many romantic relationships involve both: «Strong romantic relationships involve a combination of passionate love and compassionate love, which promotes an enduring and positive relationship.»

A tip for pragma:

The initial rush of attraction when you first meet someone, according to Hallett, «frequently stabilizes over time, which may lead people to feel that their partner ‘doesn’t love’ them as much. To counter this, partners can work together to communicate honestly, to recognize the deeper feelings of connection and compassionate love.»

Ludus (playful love)

Ludus is very flirtatious and fun, without the strings that come with eros or pragma. It can be seen in the very early stages of relationships, when two people are flirting, courting each other, and crushing on each other. It often involves laughing, teasing, and feeling giddy around a person. It’s very childlike in that way, though it can certainly evolve.

Philia is the love that develops over a deep, long-lasting friendship. And according to Hallett, these friendships can be just as impactful as romantic relationships. «People may be surprised by the depth of pain and loss related to a long-standing friendship,» she says. «Often the loss or ‘breakup’ of a friendship is as painful and challenging as the loss of a romantic relationship.»

A tip for philia:

Spend quality time with your closest friends, and get vulnerable in a way you might not usually, by letting them know how much they mean to you.

Philautia (self-love)

Philautia has actually been having a bit of a moment lately—and rightly so! This love is all about self-love and self-compassion. It may seem obvious, but the relationship we have with ourselves is very important, and yes, it needs to be nurtured. Philautia is important for our own confidence and self-esteem, and it will also influence how we interact with the world. More love of self equals more love to offer. Storge is compassionate, protective, and deeply rooted in memory.

Mania (obsessive love)

While some might argue this isn’t really «love,» the Greeks did have a word for «obsessive» love, and that’s mania. This is what we would describe as a toxic relationship or codependent relationship, where there’s usually some imbalance of affection causing one person to become overly attached. It can be hard to come back from mania, but if you can, there will need to be a healthier balance of affection.

A tip for mania:

Notice any patterns of possessive or codependent behavior and ask yourself what’s causing these feelings of insecurity and clinging. Let your partner know you’re struggling with it and try to pinpoint what needs to change. (Here’s more on how to stop being codependent.)

How can I tell which type of love I have?

Knowing what type of love you’re experiencing usually involves some level of self-awareness about the nature of your feelings toward a person. Be honest with yourself: Is it romantic, selfless, friendly, or playful? Another way to tell which kind of love you’re experiencing is to consider how long you’ve known each other.

«Generally speaking,» Hallett says, «when we feel a strong, positive connection to someone and find ourselves caring about their well-being and supporting them through our actions, this is compassionate love, and likely involving elements the Greeks referred to as philia, ludus, and agape.»

In fact, 99% of the time, it will be a race that simply is evil to the core, with some individual differences in their stances on Order Versus Chaos. The orcs in The Lord of the Rings are a perfect example: they are arguably a Lawful Evil race overall, even if individual members are not. Just because there’s an army of Lawful Good humans, doesn’t mean that the evil army that opposes them can’t also be lawful. It must be said that merely showing an evil, conquering army is not enough to prove this trope, so long as a doubt that everyone of the same nationality or race approves remains. They are part of the same group after all, of course they would share the same beliefs. Nor does showing a few evil members of a species proves that this species qualifies. It must be beyond the shadow of a doubt, that this holds true for every single individual, and in the well-done cases even justified. Also a variation playing with this trope is of creatures having basically the same background, but some choosing evil and transforming into something different.

Ancient Love Poetry: The Xianxia Drama of 2021

Countless days of waiting weren’t for nothing. My anticipation was sky high for this Xianxia, and my patience was also tested to the maximum. With a lengthy list of countless words to describe Ancient Love Poetry, I can say without any hesitation that ‘disappointment’ is an excluded word.

I’m probably not lying if I call the Xianxia genre my soulmate. I am a sucker for this beautiful genre, and Ancient Love Poetry is a must-watch if you enjoyed/loved the previous famous Xianxias. The drama brings you into a world of magic and beauty that makes it terribly hard for you to take your eyes offscreen.

Story-
What may appear at first glance to be a Cdrama filled to the brim with Xianxia tropes, it is not false to say that Ancient Love Poetry has difficult tribulations, character reincarnations, and most of all, heartbreaking sacrifices. But with the addition of beauty and elegance, a Xianxia drama can take these tropes to a heavenly level. Adapted from the well-known Xianxia novel “Shang Gu”-Ancient God (上古) by Xing Ling, the drama followed the original piece evidently well, and maintained the tension, angst and beauty masterfully to the very end.

A Xianxia would not be very well-rounded off without world building and character introduction, which Ancient Love Poetry did magnificently with. As with the majority of costume Cdramas and even more with Xianxias, it can be difficult to attempt the memorization of characters and locations. With a helping hand that is the first few episodes of Ancient Love Poetry, the audience found less struggle with this concept. I could even call Ancient Love Poetry educational in terms of the Xianxia genre- From just 49 episodes alone, I, who has done extensive research on this fantasy genre, broadened my knowledge even more.

What comes with the introduction also comes with a slight impatience towards a rather slow-paced plot in the beginning. In easier words, Ancient Love Poetry did not entirely succeed to capture everyone’s attention at the beginning, resulting in the creation of let-down droppers. As many of us say, the story gets very interesting starting from eps 12-16. And as expected, the story only progressed towards more captivation. Longer dramas may provide more time for the background story, which may seem unnecessary and boring but are actually important for the story as a whole. The sheer level of love and angst in this drama is enough for one to cry out numerous waterfalls.

It was also a pleasure to discover that aside from the lead couple, romance spread across many lovable supporting characters, as well as familial love, long lasting friendship, and even hateful grievances. Although Ancient Love Poetry focuses heavily on romance, the story also kept the audience on the edge of their seats with a few major problems that spread throughout the four realms and that threatened the existence of the true gods.

Production-
Ancient Love Poetry’s production is such a gem that I decided to give it its very own section in this review. The production is simply gorgeous, and the drama’s high budget certainly paid off and was used to its full potential. The costumes look simple with its light pastel colors, but with its simplicity comes a wave of freshness and slight joy. The drama’s CGI is not a joke, either. Each strand of magic and spell is carefully produced to the most believable extent, providing a most magical experience for the audience. Each realm in the drama also gives off special vibes. The bright gold Heavenly Palace boasts its grandeur while the lighter-colored Qingchi Palace expresses its beauty in the form of nature and water. Inside the palace, rooms and props are delicately adorned with the uniqueness of its realm, from shimmering golds to billowing blacks. Editing was not a problem either, as traditions were neatly made without any distraction.

Cast-
Please allow me to disagree to the fullest extent with the Chinese netizens claiming that Zhou Dongyu was not fit for the role of Shang Gu. She absolutely nailed this with astonishing talent. With the challenge of Ancient Love Poetry being her very first costume Cdrama, Zhou Dongyu portrayed Shang Gu perfectly, a playful girl who later grows up into the leader of the God Realm with a difficult destiny. Zhou Dongyu does exceptionally well with deep scenes, and Ancient Love Poetry gave her another chance to display this talent. Her acting was not forced at all, creating a lovable character with a heartbreaking history.

Believe it or not, Ancient Love Poetry is my first drama starring Xu Kai. As I watched this along with his first modern drama, Falling Into Your Smile, I got the perfect chance to compare his completely different roles and made the conclusion that he is an amazing actor who can portray almost any character. As a caring male lead holding unspeakable love, Bai Jue stole the hearts of everyone. He successfully made us cry rivers for him as we accompanied him on his grueling path of love and sacrifice. Xu Kai as Bai Jue and Xu Kai as Qing Mu couldn’t have been more different and heartbreaking. With contrasting personalities but the same passionate love, both characters gave way for the audience to experience their love and pain.

Shang Gu and Bai Jue are cute. Period. With cute chemistry and powerful love and care for each other, the director of ALP, Yin Tao (one of my favorite directors), did not make a mistake when he casted Zhou Dongyu and Xu Kai as the leads. I can’t think of anyone better.

Many of the supporting actors and actresses did phenomenally, to say the least. A drama is never complete with a complex range of supporting characters, all with different beliefs and lovable or hateable traits. Completely contrasting with Bai Lin in Love and Redemption, Liu Xueyi as Tian Qi was an absolute pleasure to watch. Liu Xueyi kept the balance between a playful and perky true god to a caring friend and master. Lai Yi as Gu Jun was one of my favorite characters. This righteous high god couldn’t have cared less about power and the messiness of the Heavenly Realm, and lived life to the fullest. Even as a father, no one and nothing could stop him from protecting his daughter at all costs. Last but not least, I would also like to give a big round of applause to Zhang Jiani, actress of Wu Huan. This complex character is a major challenge for anyone, but Zhang Jiani did more than wonderfully, and was such a pleasure to watch on screen.

Even with characters of very minor importance, I was always invested in their own stories and their part in the drama. Character development was done so well in Ancient Love Poetry that some characters made quite a big personality change, while others never failed to keep our attention.

Soundtrack-
What more than breathtaking awe for the OST of Ancient Love Poetry? With songs sung by exceptionally talented singers, they truly brought out the magic and beauty of the drama. Along with traditional background music and propelling lyrics, what a gem of a soundtrack this is.

Overall-
It is still quite hard to believe that Ancient Love Poetry might have just become my favorite Cdrama of all time. The title of Xianxia of 2021 is most fitting for this drama, if not enough. With tens of thousands of years of love and grievances, I was sucked deep into this moving love story. What started off on quite a good note only got better and better with a diversity of characters and relationships and a journey across the magical Xianxia world.

I Ching oracle

The I Ching is a cornerstone of Chinese philosophy. It describes the basis elements of the way to enlightenment (happiness, inner healing, holiness, in God living). When using the oracle, every statement, every question should be interpreted with wisdom. We should consider our situation closely, and then ask ourselves what the selected bit of wisdom drawn means in our situation. Basically, the I Ching oracle is a game which helps us toward positive principles of life and strategies of wisdom.

Build a hexagram (e.g., drawing it on paper) from the bottom up, for each line throwing three coins to determine whether that line is yin or yang (50% chance either way) and whether that line is “young” (75% chance) or “old” (25% chance). Count a head on a coin as valued 3 and a tail as valued 2. Add up the three values (of a toss outcome) and it should yield a number between 6 and 9 (inclusive). If the number is even (6 or 8) the line is yin; if the number is odd (7 or 9) the line is yang. If the number is outlying (6 or 9) the line is old; if the number is in-lying (7 or 8) the line is young. If the line is old then draw a dot right next to it to its right side. The pattern of dots to the right side of the first hexagram determines a second hexagram. Young lines remain the same between the two hexagrams, but old lines change (from yin to yang or vice versa). The first hexagram would correspond to the current situation and the second hexagram to the future situation. When looking up what the oracle says for the second hexagram, ignore the commentaries about the changing lines; those only apply when looking up the first hexagram.

Break up the hexagram into its lower and upper trigrams, and use those trigrams to look up the chapter-number corresponding to the hexagram using the table in Hexagram (I Ching)#Lookup table. Then go to the chapter hereunder with that ordinal number.

The Dragon (Force) [ edit | edit source ]

The Creative Dragon = Design and create your own life. What are your goals? How can you reach them? The wise dragon says „yes“ to life. Be a victor! Go on with perseverence. Supreme success.

On the bottom line, old yang means: The Hidden Dragon = The wise dragon lives alone, and does not deal in the world. He concentrates on his own spiritual development.

On the second line, old yang means: The Blessed Dragon = Before the dragon acts, he obtains the blessing from the heavens (of the enlightened spiritual masters). Meditate on the mantra: “ Om all enlightened masters. Please help me on my way.” Deal consistently from your inner truth and wisdom, and receive the blessings of your higher self.

On the third line, old yang means: The Dilligent Dragon = The dragon stays true to his path of wisdom. He is constantly aware of each step he takes along this way. He concentrates on his positive goals and follows a good plan towards the realization of these goals. Those who work effectively harvests good karma for his or her efforts.

On the fourth line, old yang means: The Clever Dragon = The situation is difficult. Go about your way with wisdom and intuition. Stick to the path which is correct for you. What does your intellect tell you? What do your feelings tell you? When these elements coincide, then you will emerge victorious.

On the fifth line, old yang means: The Victorious Dragon = Connect with your higher self (God, your spiritual role model, your inner wisdom) every day and you will succeed. Good tools to connect with your higher self are the oracle, prayer, mantra, meditation and reading a spiritual text.

On the top line, old yang means: The Humble Dragon = The dragon deals humbly and modestly in the world and goes consistently his spiritual way. Pride is a kind of inner knot which hinders us toward enlightenment (unity consciousness.) Which thoughts help you to overcome your pride that you are a successful dragon? Think of the suffering in your life and in the world. “The suffering in my life is. the suffering in the world is. (sickness, war, poverty, hunger, hopelessness).” Send light to all beings: „I send light to… may all beings be happy, may all the world be happy.” In this way you will retain inner humility and grow eternally in love, strength and happiness.

The Water (Field) [ edit | edit source ]

The Water = The wise concentrate on their goals and find their way toward them flexibly, while overcoming all obstacles, flowing around them as water. The wise do what is possible and are victorious through perseverence. What are your goals? What is your way to victory? Forward. Great Success.

On the bottom line, old yin means: Difficulties = Ice on the ground indicates frost. The wise tread a difficult path. You win through perseverence and wisdom.

On the second line, old yin means: Change = Big transformation. Find your way flexibly. Things will turn for the better without enormous effort. Success.

On the third line, old yin means: The Hidden Master = Stay in the background. Speak little, and deal wisely. Don’t display your special abilities. Deal modestly and be a mother of all beings: “I send light to. May all people be happy. May the world be happy.” Success.

On the fourth line, old yin means: Excessive Restrain = You don’t dare toward much. You are restraining yourself too much which means you get no criticisms, but also no praise. You could be more courageous. A mother is willing to fight like a lioness for the happiness of her children. Go on with courage.

On the fifth line, old yin means: The Crown of the Master = You will be awarded the crown (the mantle) of the master. You are a champion of life. You’re doing your job well. Keep it up. Great praise!

On the top line, old yin means: Yin and Yang = Go with both powers Yin (serenity) and Yang (strength). You are victorious when you apply your feminine energies (water) and your masculine energies (dragon) at the right time. The fine art of life can be expressed as living the ultimate balance of rest and activity. Who works relaxed (happy in himself) for a happy world grows ever deeper into the love and light.

The Begin (Sprouting) [ edit | edit source ]

On the bottom line, old yang means: Uncertainty = It’s uncertain as to whether you will reach your goals. Plan your course of action wisely. What is the way to victory? What helpers do you have? Proceed with consistency along your way of truth and wisdom.

On the second line, old yin means: Stagnation = Success is waiting for you. Practice patience and perseverence. A rich harvest awaits you. Success.

On the third line, old yin means: Consideration = Consider your goals. Find back to the right way. What are your goals? What is the way to success? When your goals are clear, the right way to them will become clear.

On the fourth line, old yin means: The Camel = A camel can live a long time without water. The iron Yogi wanders through the desert. You will succeed through perseverence. Success is certain, but it will manifest after a long period of time.

On the fifth line, old yang means: The Turtle = A turtle has small feet, but he can walk a long distance. He is shielded and protected by his shell. Take small steps. What protects you along your way? God? Your own wisdom? A goal-oriented mentality? Clear planning? Success.

On the top line, old yin means: Lucky Pig = You’re sad because your way forward only sees slow progress. For this reason, the lucky pig appears to you today. The lucky pig symbolizes the way of joy. Integrate enough elements of joy in your spiritual way so that you can go your path joyfully. Take the middle road, have some self-discipline and a lot of joy. Success. What can you do to bring yourself joy?

The Way of Love (Enveloping) [ edit | edit source ]

The Mistress = The mistress (Quan Yin) works consistently toward the goal of a happy world. She is the mother of all beings. She focuses her life not on herself, but on the happiness of her fellow beings. At the same time, she is able to care for herself quite well. She lives healthfully and makes every day her spiritual practice. She grows constantly in her inner happiness and people come automatically to her to receive her love. Proceed with perseverence along the way of love (Karma Yoga, do good, aiding others). You will be a successful Bodhisattva.

On the bottom line, old yin means: Dullness = In a suffering world there is always something for a mother (or a father) of all beings to do. A Karma Yogi feels no boredom. Overcome your dullness. The children of the world cry out for help. Hunger, sickness, war, poverty, and hopelessness dominate our earth. What can you do for a happy world? “My good deed today is. ” Go forward with strength and you will succeed.

On the third line, old yin means: Attachment = You are too attached to other people. Center yourself in yourself. Be an island for yourself. Find your happiness within yourself. Detach yourself suffciently from others and establish your own space. Live within God, in spirituality, and in detached being. Save yourself through spiritual practice (Yoga, meditation, reading, exercise, thought work). Bring yourself into the light with your spiritual practice (a spiritual daily plan). Success.

On the fourth line, old yin means: Danger = What are your goals? What is your spiritual way? Be wary of laxity. Neglecting your goals means losing inner happiness and satisfaction in your life. Proceed forward on the way of truth, wisdom, and justice. Success.

On the fifth line, old yin means: Pleasure Principle = Live spontaneously from yourself and joy will appear. What do you need now? What do you feel like doing? Live as you wish, and free yourself of energy blocks. Sense every moment what is right for you from your innermost feelings, then do it. Proceed on your way with spontaneous action. Proceed creatively and spontaneously on your spiritual path. Success.

Trust in God (Attending) [ edit | edit source ]

Trust in God = Trust in your life and receive guidance from the enlightened masters (God, light, inner wisdom). Those who connect with God every day (Tao, heaven, inner wisdom) will be lead to light. Those who do this will grow in their personally correct way to enlightenment (holiness, inner healing). Supreme success through daily oracle, prayer or spiritual reading.

On the bottom line, old yang means: Detachment = Reserve your inner energy. Separate from the world and your fellow man. How much detachment do you need to grow with your spiritual energy? A lot of rest and sufficient spiritual practice are the quickest ways to the light. Give yourself what you need.

On the second line, old yang means: Inaction = Wu Wei is the Chinese term for enlightened existence (Sat-Chit-Ananda). Release all of your external goals (wishes) onto a deeper level. Deal from the perspective of inner peace and calm. You must deal on an external level so little that all of your life energy goes innwards and your tension will dissolve on their own. People might consider you lazy, but you will become a Goddess or God of light. Life sufficiently in calm and peace, hold to your spiritual practice and awaken your inner happiness.

On the third line, old yang means: Action = One can also go to far with inaction. God is with the hard-working. Solve your problems. Bring yourself into light with your spiritual practice. Proceed with strength. Success.

On the fourth line, old yin means: The Sacrifice = Without an external sacrifice there can be no inner happiness. What do you need to give up on an external level so that you can grow with happiness on the inner level? What is your sacrifice for a successful spiritual way? Let go of your ego, go with strength along the path of truth, do your spiritual practice and get into the land of light. Success.

On the fifth line, old yang means: Joy = Proceed along the middle path. Don’t demand too much or too little of yourself along your spiritual path. Live joyfully. Make your path, your course of action beautiful. What is your joyful deed today?

On the top line, old yin means: Conflict = Before one can dissolve inner blockages, one must go through obstacles. Feelings of reluctance appear. Stay on your way. Live as a spiritual winner. A great reward awaits you. Proceed with strength and perseverence along the way of wisdom and light.

Obstacles (Arguing) [ edit | edit source ]

Obstacles = There are obstacles along your way. The difficulties cannot be avoided. The wise dragon remains along his way. Stay true to your course. Proceed carefully. Pay attention to your inner voice of wisdom. What is the obstacle? What is your way of wisdom?

On the bottom line, old yin means: Serenity and Composure = Don’t go the way of violence. Don’t become attached to external problems. Rest within yourself and God (the light). Take the path of inner truth and everything will develop for the best. Success!

On the second line, old yang means: Retreat = Remove yourself wisely from difficulties. Retreat on an inner level, or on the outer level. Hide from your enemy, avoid him. Make yourself invisible. Then the problems will solve themselves.

On the third line, old yin means: Perseverence = Decisive action first leads to difficulties and later to victory. Proceed with clarity and positive action and frame of mind. Perseverence. Success.

On the fourth line, old yang means: Up and Down = Sometimes you feel good, and sometimes you feel bad. The way of victory goes through many small, temporary difficulties. Stand up each time you fall. Go forward and proceed along the way of truth. Advance with perseverence. Success.

On the fifth line, old yang means: Decisiveness = Go energetically through all conflict. With strength and perseverence you can prevail.

On the top line, old yang means: Joy and Suffering = Life is a constant change between joy and suffering. The wise stay about this. They flow positively with life and rest in a constant state of inner joy. Success.

The Army (Leading) [ edit | edit source ]

The Army = Proceed with strength. Be a good leader. Activate all of your powers and abilities. Be clever, courageous, and persevere and you will be victorious. What is your way to victory?

On the bottom line, old yin means: Self-discipline = Discipline is fundamental to every army. The army marches into battle in an orderly fashion when they want to be victorious. Concentrate on your goals. What are your goals? Follow a good plan. Make a general spiritual plan for your life, and/or a daily schedule to follow. Figure out a plan which works for you and stick to it. Proceed with self-discipline. That is your way to success.

On the second line, old yang means: Great Praise = The King sees the situation clearly. He does not seek to hide the problems. Those who can look a difficult situation in the eye, can find the best way to come out of the situation.

On the third line, old yin means: Skillfullness= The situation is difficult. Proceed skillfully. What is the problem? What is the solution?

On the fourth line, old yin means: A Needed Rest = The army withdraws and takes a break from fighting.

On the fifth line, old yin means: Dangerous Situation = You could meet enemies anywhere and everywhere. Be careful of what you do. Avoid mistakes, concentrate on your successful outcome. Proceed carefully and succeed.

On the top line, old yin means: The General = The king assigns the most difficult of tasks to his best people. You are a master at life. Great praise. Forward. Success.

The Friends (Grouping) [ edit | edit source ]

The Friends = You have friends who help you along your way. Master and student stick together. Always deal from the voice of your inner truth. Success.

On the bottom line, old yin means: Trust = You will get help. Proceed trustfully. Unexpected luck.

On the second line, old yin means: Perseverence = Perseverence along the way of your spiritual practice (meditation and thought work) and unconditional love (doing good, Karma Yoga) lead to great success and happiness.

On the third line, old yin means: Great Danger = Too much contact with worldly people brings unhappiness. Too much television will make you confused and unfocused. Strengthen and support yourself every day with the oracle. Cleanse your mind regularly with spiritual exercises such as reading, meditation, motion, oracle and conscious attitude adjustment. Sense any negative thoughts in your mind and instead turn your attention to helpful and positive thoughts.

On the fourth line, old yin means: Doing Good = Go the way of all-embracing love. Move one hand and send light to the world: » I send light to (name). May all people be happy. May the world be happy.» Work for of a better world. Be a friend and helper to your fellow humans. What is your good deed today? Success.

On the fifth line, old yang means: Cooperation = Master and student work well together. When friends form a team, they succeed. Great success through good cooperation. What is your way of team work today?

On the top line, old yin means: The Bodhisattva = Take on responsibility in your world. Your fellow man need your help. Be a spiritual master (mistress), a father (or a mother) of all beings. What is your way of love (do good)? Forward with wisdom and perseverance. Success.

The Little Master (Small Accumulating) [ edit | edit source ]

The Little Master = Difficulties. The little master succeeds with skillfullness and perseverence. Proceed with small steps and succeed.

On the bottom line, old yang means: The Beginning = The little master defines his goals, makes a good plan and begins to carry it out. Clarity and self-discipline at the beginning of a project lead to successful completion. Success.

On the second line, old yang means: Fluctuation = You waver on your way. Proceed with small steps. The difficulties will solve themselves automatically. Success.

On the third line, old yang means: Disorder = Your mind is scattered. Axis (wisdom) and carriage (action) have separated. Center yourself in your spiritual goals. Stay consistent along the way of wisdom. Who is a spiritual inspiration to you (Buddha, Jesus, Socrates, Shiva, Laozi, the Goddess of Love, in God living)? Do some spiritual exercises (walking, reading, meditation, yoga), and you are well.

On the fourth line, old yin means: Trust = If you are honest and consistent along the way of truth every doubt will disappear. Doubt is either for a reason or a tension within the mind. The former is resolved by considering carefully and clearly, and the latter is resolved through spiritual practice. Proceed with trust.

On the fifth line, old yang means: Mutual Happiness = All friends are honest to one another. They trust one another and grow together in the light. Success.

On the top line, old yang means: Success = You were successful. The little master has prevailed. Take a break now. Rest. Proceed when the next time for action appears.

The Great Master (Treading) [ edit | edit source ]

The clever Master = Although he steps on the tail of the tiger, he is not bitten. He dares the impossible and is successful. He risks much and everything works.

On the bottom line, old yang means: Simplicity = The great master prefers a simple lifestyle. He appears unassuming, and modest. For this reason, the tiger isn’t interested in him and he doesn’t land in danger.

On the second line, old yang means: Distance = The wise master lives in a sufficient distance from the tigers. He retains his energy this way, and avoids being eaten.

On the third line, old yin means: Generosity = The master of love kicks the tiger’s tail and gets bitten. He takes pain, in order to help his fellow man. He sacrifices his ego and comes into the light.

On the fourth line, old yang means: Be Observant = The careful master pays close attention to his words, thoughts, and deeds. He considers the situation carefully and in this way recognizes the way to success. He steps on the tiger’s tail and does not get eaten because he does everything in the right way at the right moment. He is victorious even in the most difficult situations.

On the fifth line, old yang means: Decisiveness = The corageous master proceeds along his way in the jungle full of dangerous tigers. He has clear goals and a good plan. He listens to his voice of inner truth. He succeeds because he proceeds with wisdom and perseverence.

On the top line, old yang means: Optimism = The tigers are threatening the wise, but the wise connects with higher powers through prayer, mantra, and oracle and listen to his inner voice. He looks every difficult situation in the eye and always finds a way through. «Om all enlightened masters (God, inner wisdom). Please help me on my way.» Forwards with optimism. Success.

Inner Peace (Pervading) [ edit | edit source ]

Inner Peace = Many people break down in great difficulty, great people grow as a result of it. You deserve high praise as you know how to preserve your inner peace in difficult situations.

On the bottom line, old yang means: Problem Solving = You pull weeds from the root out of the soil. You solve the cause of your problems. “My problem is. my solution is…“ Success is yours.

On the second line, old yang means: Clever Dealing = You deal wisely and in a balanced manner. You also take your friends with you over the large river. On the fifth line, old yin means: The Secret Master = The secret master behaves unobtrusive and modest. Everyone thinks he is a nobody. However, at the right moment he is capable of great deeds. Great success!

On the top line, old yin means: The Successful Master = The fellow man of the master think he is small and insignificant. From this position, he attacks and defeats his opponents. No one expects the great power of the little yogi. He is underestimated. He lives as a dwarf and acts sometimes as a giant. Forward with force. Live as a spiritual master (father / mother of all beings) in your world.

On the fifth line, old yin means: The Steadfast Yogi = The situation is difficult, but you remain steadfast. Continue on your spiritual journey with energy and strength and you are sure to succeed.

On the top line, old yin means: The Wise and the Foolish = Happiness along the spiritual journey, unhappiness on the material way. Foolish people expect happiness to come from material pleasures. The wise work on themselves, and for the happiness of all beings. In the long run, the wise have a rich harvest while the unwise harvest only discontent. Use the time of your life. Forward. Success.

Equanimity = Unpleasant things have happened. You can’t change them. Think of the attitude and perception of the wise, such as Buddha and Confucius. The wise deal with what they have to deal with in a state of complete serenity. The wise orient themselves around the will of the cosmos. On the fifth line, old yin means: Praise = You have done well. You are good. You bring order to the disorder. You overwhelm the difficulties. You will be victorious. Continue on your way.

On the top line, old yang means: Heaven = You serve the heaven. You don’t work for a worldly goal, rather for the happiness of all beings (heaven on earth and beyond). You live in truth, love, and God. You go with the flow of life in a positive way and everything arranges itself as it should be. Good karma. The light is with you. Success!

On the fourth line, old yin means: The World = The wise thinks about the state of the world. He considers the world exactly and looks of his opportunities to help others. Then the wise knows what to do. Can you do in this moment something good for the world? Or do you have to develop yourself spiritually (inner healing, inner happiness)? Or should you go balance the way of love and the way of spiritual exercises?

On the fifth line, old yang means: Self-Realization = The wise man thinks about his live. He develops a plan for his spiritual self-realization (inner happiness). What are your goals? How can you reach these goals? Those who sow the right seeds today, will reap a good harvest tomorrow. Proceed with power and perseverance and you will succeed!

On the top line, old yang means: The Buddha of Love = The wise man sees the suffering in the world and decides to life as a Karma Yogi (helper). He sacrifices his own pleasure for the happiness of others. This path leads to enlightenment and he becomes a Buddha of Love (Amitabha, Quan Yin). On the second line, old yin means: Fighting = The lion bites. The situation is difficult. However, if you fight, you will succeed. Overcome your problems and proceed forward. Success.

On the third line, old yin means: Optimism = The lion eats poisoned meat, but he is strong and survives. There are difficulties along your way but they cannot stop you. Proceed with optimism.

On the fourth line, old yang means: The Tip of the Arrow = The lion eats dry meat with arrow tips in it. You got some injuries. The way is tough, but stick to your goals and stay true to your course. Perseverence leads to success.

On the fifth line, old yin means: Gold Coin = The lion eats dried meat and finds a gold coin. The way is tought, but something positive will take place. What is positive about today? Proceed joyfully and succeed.

On the top line, old yang means: The Trap = The lion is stuck in a trap. He needs all of his strength and wisdom to get himself out. It causes motivation, strength and optimsm. “My positive thought is. ”

On the fifth line, old yin means: Ascension to your Goal = The way to the land of light leads through big mountains. It has been a difficult climb, but afterwards you can enjoy the sun on the mountain summit. After a difficult period of inner cleansing, happiness will appear in you. On the fifth line, old yin means: The Big Fish = The big fish is on the hook. The big fish is a symbol for happiness in China. You are consistent along the way of wisdom, truth, and love. You have your spiritual goals firmly in mind. Proceed, and everything will turn out fine. Pull the big fish to land. Success!

On the top line, old yang means: The Golden Peach = Those who go consistently along a path of spiritual development will reap a rich harvest. They will harvest inner happiness, inner peace, all-encompassing love, and a life full of light. The Chinese God of happiness holds a golden peach in his left hand (Fruit of paradise). In his other hand he holds a magic wand, which we can interpret as representing Kundalini energy. The golden peach refers to a fruitful life within God, within happiness, and completion. The magic wand (our spiritual practice) gives strength along our way. Persevere along your way. A large harvest awaits you. Good karma and success.

On the second line, old yin means: Positive Thinking = Overcome your negative thoughts and think positive. “My positive thoughts are. ” Proceed with optimism. Everything will turn out for the best.

On the third line, old yin means: The Bounceback = You pick yourself right up after you fall. Whenever you encounter difficulties, you stay on your feet or pick yourself back up again immediately. You deserve great praise. Proceed with strength. Success.

On the fifth line, old yin means: Intense Contemplation = You think about your life in detail and depth. What would you like to achieve in your life? What are your goals? What is your way towards a successful existence? Weigh the various alternatives. Whoever does good, reaps a good karma. Who lives in the spiritual focus gets the greatest profit in life.

Spontaneity = Act spontaneously from the voice of your inner wisdom. This is the way God (the enlightenend masters) can lead you. What can you do for the world and for other people? What do you need right now? What do you feel like doing? Spontaneity creates inner happines. Success.

On the bottom line, old yang means: Five Sources of Joy = Live your life today with the pleasure principle (from the perspective of happiness). Practice the five pleasures to eat something good, to get plenty of rest, to hear good music, to have some contact to other people (internet, meeting friends, communication), to do something creative such as painting, writing and making music. What helps you to get a positiv feeling of life?

On the second line, old yin means: Let Go of All Big Goals = Do not create tension with big goals. Anchoring yourself primarily in existence (in God, in the inner happiness) and then act spontaneously out of the being (inner silence). Develop your goals out of the being (inner silence). Live like a Buddha. He rests in himself and acts spontaneously for the benefit of all beings. You can have big goals, but your actions must be done from your enlightened (happy) being. The pleasure principle does not mean that you are free to do your spiritual practice or not. It refers only to how you make it. Stay fixed on your personal path of wisdom. He nourishes himself healthily, avoids toxins like smoking, alcohol, and drugs and for this reason he is healthy and fit.

On the fourth line, old yin means: The Wise Loner = Live sufficiently separated from worldly energies, from worldly humans. Give yourself enough time to rest and to spiritually practice through Yoga, reading, exercising, and meditation. Rebuild your energy with a lot of rest and spiritual exercise.

On the fifth line, old yin means: The Chaos = During a chaotic time, it’s best to stay home. Don’t start anything new. Stay home and proceed with your usual routine. In this way, you will succeed.

So, the best way is to take a middle road with enough self-discipline, balanced with enjoyment. The Tibetan Yogi Padmasambhava taught “practice so that you feel good.” Succeed along the middle road!

On the third line, old yang means: Pleasure Principle = You try too hard. You want to force things too much. Entrust God (the life) with the results of your actions. Proceed in a more laid-back way. Have more fun. Live your life from the perspective of inner happiness. Live with the pleasure principle. What do you feel like doing right now? What do you need right now?

On the fourth line, old yang means: The Right Balance = You live in the proper balance of rest and activity. You have a good sense of what your body and spirit need. You live with the right amount of strength, of rest, and of joy along your way. Continue in this way. Great praise!

On the fifth line, old yang means: Much Material Enjoyment = The old lady marries a young man. Every day there’s a party. The I Ching says there isn’t praise nor criticism for that. You can do it, or leave it. Yogi Nils thinks that worldly enjoyment is sometimes also helpful along the spiritual way. Deep energy blockages can be released. What is your deed of happiness today?

On the top line, old yin means: The Crisis = While crossing the river, for a short time the water goes over the Yogi’s head and things get too difficult for him. But he consistently goes his way and is finally on dry land once more. Keep to the middle road. Proceed with self-discipline and some joy. Success.

On the top line, old yin means: Lasting Danger = The wise is in prison and is bound by many ropes. Many things bind you to the worldly life. Slowly free yourself from all of your worldly bindings. Work slowly from the land of darkness (Samsara) to come to the land of light (paradise, nirvana, living in God). Dissolve your fears and addictions systematically. Develop your inner happiness constantly. Practice your spiritual exercises daily (Yoga, going, doing good, meditation). Proceed with wisdom and perseverance. Success!

Good Harvest = It is a good time to sow seeds at the moment. What is sown, will one day bear fruit. Use this optimal time. Great success will come to those along the path of all-encompassing love (doing good) and spiritual practice. Proceed with perseverance.

On the bottom line, old yang means: Integrity = Many difficulties, but everything is okay. You live in accordance with your positive life principles. You observe your thoughts and feelings. You work on yourself constantly. You correct your mistakes. You go seriously along your spiritual way. Great praise.

On the second line, old yin means: The Rising Sun = The sun is shining on you. Happiness is coming to you. A good harvest along the way of spiritual practice and love (doing good). Proceed along the middle road. Enjoy your day, may it be full of joy, happiness and fun.

On the fifth line, old yin means: A Phase of Cleansing = You are going through a difficult phase of internal cleansing. What makes you sad? It is OK to whine and complain. Live your grief. Go ahead with stamina on your spiritual path. After the rain, the sun shines again. Optimism.

On the top line, old yang means: Good Karma = The King kills the leader of the rebellion. You solve the problems at their root cause. On the top line, old yin means: The Middle Road = You work too much. You block your happiness by your over-effort. You’re too ambitious. Proceed with some enjoyment, coziness, sociability (some social contact), creativity, and the pleasure principle. You succeed when you take the middle road with the five pleasure principles.

On the fourth line, old yang means: Skillfull Retreat = When appropriate, retreating or taking time out can bring happiness. A master of life goes with the flow of life cleverly. When a situation comes to a conclusion, he knows enough to step away from it. He dissolves all dependencies and attachments from the past and gears himself toward the future with a positive perspective.

On the third line, old yang means: The Billy Goat = A billy goat rams his head against the wall. A wise person, on the other hand, looks for a door and therefore reaches his goal. What is your door to the light. Proceed wisely. Success.

On the fourth line, old yang means: Obstacles = Stay calm. What’s the problem, exactly? Consider various solutions. What ist the best way? The wise overcomes every obstacle using his wisdom and ability to persevere. Success.

On the fifth line, old yin means: The Sacrifice = The billy goat is to be sacrificed. You sacrifice something, and you get a big win by this. Success.

On the top line, old yin means: The Thorns = The billy goat is stuck in a patch of thorns. The difficulties will pass after some time. What is the problem? What is the solution? Proceed patiently, and get the rose from the patch of thorns. Success.

On the third line, old yin means: The Braggart = Those who display their riches attract robbers. Don’t brag about your success, that will lead to trouble. Stay modest. This way you truly succeed, and are free to succeed further.

On the fourth line, old yang means: A small sacrifice = To find freedom, you must sactifice something. Accept things as they are, go with the flow, and you will land in light (in happiness). Proceed with strength. Success.

On the fourth line, old yin means: The Way of Healing = Practice the five basics to health (positive thinking, sports and fitness, a lot of relaxation, healthy food, avoding of alcohol, smoking and other unhealthy items). What is the cause of your illness (of your problem)? What will get rid of this problem? Proceed. Healing. Success.

On the fifth line, old yin means: Ten Turtleshells = A hard way leads to great gain. Those who stand by their spiritual way and help others, will one day be richly rewarded. Proceed forward. Success.

On the top line, old yang means: A Great Harvest = A great harvest follows a positive vision (positive goals.) Be consistent along the way of wisdom and love. “The positive vision of mylife is. ” Proceed forwards. A great harvest awaits you.

On the fifth line, old yang means: Love = A Buddha of love (Bodhisattva, Karma Yogi) does not act to gain something by it, rather to increase the happiness of other beings. On the fourth line, old yang means: The Golden Cage = You are stuck in your golden cage of material wishes. You can free yourself from the cage with your spiritual practice (mind and body exercise). “My material desires are. My way of wisdom is. (I let go of my attachments to other people. On the fifth line, old yang means: The Exhausted Bodhisattva = It is difficult to help other people spiritually. It is difficult to save the world. The many problems have exhausted the little Yogi, but he sees the suffering of the world and sacrifices his ego (dullness, laziness), empowers himself with his spiritual practice and moves forward along the path of all-encompassing love. On the fifth line, old yang means: Water for All = Your fountain gives good water. You can strengthen your spiritual energy when you give all beings something to drink. «I send light to (name). May all people be happy. May the world be happy. My deed of love is. » Great success along the way of all-encompassing love.

On the top line, old yin means: The Great Breakthrough = The fountain is flowing strongly. The Kundalini energy (life energy, Shakti, Chi) has been awakened. On the top line, old yang means: The Jade Buddha = The bowl of offerings is made of jade. You are consistent along your way of truth and wisdom. On the fourth line, old yin means: The Wise Holds His Entire Body Still = The wise lives in peace (Wu wei). He doesn’t waste his energy on material activities. At a certain point of rest, your energy turns inwards. It dissolves tensions in the body and mind, heals, and creates inner happiness. Live with enough rest and be healthy and happy.

On the fifth line, old yin means: The Wise Woman Keeps the Mouth Still = Too much talking can lead to a loss of energy. Those who wish to develop inner happiness should be silent at best, and only speak when necessary. It is not necessary to talk about others. Talking is only necessary when it is helpful, useful, true, and kind. A wise person prefers to live in inner happiness and love to all.

On the top line, old yang means: The Wise Lives in Enlightenment = Find your way to enlightenment. Anchor yourself in wisdom and happiness. Then your life will go right.

The Wild Goose = The wild goose is a symbol for a Yogi (one who practices spirituality.) A Yogi is wild because he or she doesn’t fit in with the typical societal norm of consumption and materialism. On the fifth line, old yang means: The Summit = The wild goose is climbing the mountain of enlightenment. Many roads lead to the summit of the mountain. On the bottom line, old yang means: The Man Full of Flaws = The woman is getting married. Her man has some mistakes, but they are happy anyways. Accept your life the way it is, even if it isn’t perfect. When you anchor yourself in your spiritual practice you can still be happy despite any difficulties. Even a difficult relationship can succeed if both partners put wisdom, loyalty and love in the center of their relationship. Success.

On the second line, old yang means: The One-Eyed Woman = The woman is getting married. She goes into the relationship a bit blindly. Through the worldly eye she sees well and with the spritiual eye not so well. You cannot tell the difference between what is important and what is not. However, even those who are a bit blind can find they way to the light. It is unimportant if a partner is perfect on an outer level. What matters is if one can be happy in a relationship.

On the third line, old yin means: The Difficult Relationship = Accept your relationship for what it is. Overcome your ego and live in happiness. Let go of your wishes for a perfect relationship. Take things on as they are. Concentrate on your spiritual practice. Live for the happiness of other beings and not for your ego.

On the fourth line, old yang means: Before the Wedding = The Wedding is experiencing some delays. You need a long time to take on your imperfect life and accept it. Marry yourself with the light, with God, and the spiritual way. Concentrate on inner happiness and outer happiness will come on its own. Proceed with optimism. Success.

On the fifth line, old yin means: The Wedding = The daughter of the emperor of China is getting married, but she avoids pride. She serves her guests and not her ego. She appears as a servent and treats her guests as kings. So the wedding is a success. The Yogi develops enlightenment. He aligns himself with the light, but he remains modest. He lives as a helper of all beings, so he succeeds. Stay modest and you will be successful.

On the top line, old yin means: After the Wedding = The wedding has taken place, but the arrival of true bliss and happiness has to wait. The attraction is not what it was thought to be. Everything is going wrong somehow, but they still stick to their path and are consistent along the way of wisdom. At the beginning there are difficulties and happiness at the end. Persevere and proceed.

Fulfillment = Concentrate on what is positive. Make yourself aware of all you have in your life. Where is the fulfillment in your life? Think of what is positive in your life. Celebrate this. Make your life beautiful. So you conquer all external difficulties internally.

On the bottom line, old yang means: Highest Fulfillment = The most important is to live in the essential. The highest form of fulfillment is to live in God, to be enlightened. Go consistent your way of wisdom and your life will be fullfilled.

On the second line, old yin means: The Expanding of the Fulfillment = At the moment it seems as if inner happiness is just a tiny star on the horizon. Inner happiness is inner work. When you do your spiritual practice every day, the happiness in your life will increase. Proceed with optimism. Success.

On the third line, old yang means: The Feeling of Happiness in the Rain = One can be happy, even in the rain. Proceed with serenity through all of your problems and keep your inner happiness. Do your spiritual exercises. Bring as much joy in your life, so that you can go your way positive. Success.

On the fourth line, old yang means: Calling to the Master = Many difficulties and obstacles are present, but God (your own inner wisdom) saves you. Think of the mantra: ”Om enlightened Masters. Om inner wisdom. Please guide and help me on my way“. Stick to your path of wisdom. Proceed with strength and perseverence. Success.

On the fifth line, old yin means: After the Crisis = The crisis is over. You have won. Recover from your efforts. Do your spiritual practice. Build up your inner happiness. Rejoice in what you have achieved.

On the top line, old yin means: Sharing of Wealth = In your house (in you, in your life) there is fulfillment. Share your (spiritual) wealth with others. Awaken your inner happiness through generous giving. Live your way of love and inner fulfillment is with you. Success.

The Wanderer = A difficult phase of the spiritual path has come to an end. Now it is proceeding as usual. Find your accustomed rhythm. Don’t brag about your successes, stay modest and you will find friends. Proceed and persevere and succeed.

On the bottom line, old yin means: The Misfortune = The wanderer doesn’t feel like climbing the mountain of enlightenment anymore. He would rather live in the valley of people and play material games. Concentrate on your way of truth and wisdom. On the second line, old yin means: The Guesthouse = The wanderer reaches a guesthouse and meets other wanderers there. Rest after the difficult journey for a time. Friends make life more fun. Spiritual friends give us strength along our way.

On the third line, old yang means: The Guesthouse Burns = Danger. What is the danger along your spiritual journey? When you can see the danger (problems) clearly, you can also find a way through it. Save yourself. Success.

On the fourth line, old yang means: Joy Along the Way = The wanderer is proceeding well, but the joy in heart is missing. What can you do to bring your life more fun? Bring as many elements of joy into your life as possible, so you can go about your way positively.

On the fifth line, old yin means: The Golden Pheasant = The wanderer shoots the golden pheasant. What is your goal? What is your way of victory? Be effective. Success.

On the top line, old yang means: Laughing and Crying = The bird burns his own nest. Through spiritual exercise, the ego dissolves. The wanderer is laughing and crying, constantly alternating between the two. When the exercises work powerfully, first the happiness energy flows, then suppressed feelings surface. At some point you will land permanently in enlightenment. Proceed with perseverance. Success.

Acceptance = Accept things as they are and let go of your false wishes. On earth, there is a constant switching between joy and suffering, nothing is constant. Unwise people despair by this. The wise flows positiv with life. Proceed gently, take small steps. Success.

On the bottom line, old yin means: Accepting or Acting = The wise recognizes when it is time to act and when it is time to accept. Look carefully at your situation, then you will recognize the correct way.

On the second line, old yang means: Humility = The wise kneels before the Godly. He sacrifices his ego and comes to the light. Proceed with trust.

On the third line, old yang means: Trust Yourself = You have too little faith in yourself and your abilities. Overcome the doubt you have in yourself and win in your life. See yourself strong and successful. What are your goals? What is your way to victory? Success.

On the fifth line, old yang means: Perseverence = A difficult beginning, with a happy ending. Shape your life with wisdom and motivation. You can learn from your mistakes. What doesn’t work can be changed and made to function. Perseverence. Success.

On the top line, old yang means: The One who Forms = Not kneel before the gods, acting is the way to victory. Take your destiny in your hands. “My way of forming my life is. ” Proceed with strength and perseverence. The power is with you. Success.

On the third line, old yin means: Sufficient Limits = It is important to set limits when dealing with others. The biggest secret of inner happiness is the seclusion of the world. If one lives in rest and seclusion, one can act out of happiness and love. Find just the right for the way in which you keep your peace, your power and your happiness. Success.

On the fourth line, old yin means: Gently Setting Limits = Do not overwhelm yourself. Enjoy yourself enough by spending time with others, enjoying fun things. Take the middle road. Practice the spiritual way so that you feel good. Succeed. What is your deed of joy for the day?

On the fifth line, old yang means: Sweetly Setting Limits = Make your outer limitations lighter in that you concentrate on positive goals. An athlete visualizes victory and experiences it instead of the efforts of the perfornance. A Yogi has the goal of enlightenment and the happiness of fellow beings at heart. The strength of love make it easy to deal with efforts along the way.

On the top line, old yin means: Painful Limitation = A time of painful limitation that will end one day. You must restrict yourself in some way for a certain amount of time so that you can develop spiritually.

The Highest Wisdom (Centre Confirming) [ edit | edit source ]

The Highest Wisdom = The highest wisdom is to be enlightened (to be happy within oneself) and to give love to others. The highest way is the double way of love to the spiritual goal and love to all beings. Proceed with perseverence. Suppreme success.

On the bottom line, old yang means: The Wise = The wise hear the voice of wisdom and follow it. The unwise hear about it and laugh about it. If they don´t laugh, it is not the highest wisdom. For the foolish, the way of wisdom seems crazy. It seems crazy to let go of material happiness in order to develop inner happiness. It seems crazy to live as one who gives. Be a little crazy, but not too much. Proceed with wisdom and humor.

On the second line, old yang means: The Crane = The crane sings the song of wisdom, and so do his children. The wise shares his wisdom with his friends. Great success along the way of sharing wisdom.

On the third line, old yin means: The Inconsistent Wise = The inconsistent wise one is indeed convinced of the way of wisdom but does not follow it consistently. Protect yourself from too many material energies (TV, worldly people, worldly thoughts). Train your self-discipline. Proceed with wisdom and self-discipline. Success.

On the fourth line, old yin means: The Moon = The moon is nearly full. The wise nears the Tao. The unwise nears the burnout. Orient yourself not on what is foolish, but on what is wise. Reach inner happiness, unity, completion, full moon through the way of spiritual practice. Inner healing. Proceed forwards. Success.

On the fifth line, old yang means: Dolphins = Dolphins are sociable animals. They are not as strong as sharks, but they can defeat them through cleverness and teamwork. They ram into the shark with their snouts until the shark swims away. The evil in the world often have more power in the world than the good, but when the good cooperate, they can defeat the evil. Together we can save the world. What is your deed of love for today? Success.

On the top line, old yang means: The Rooster = The rooster crows to proclaim his happiness to the heavens. He has won. You will win along the spiritual way if you live with the five basics of wisdom, love, peace, happiness, and self-discipline. What are your goals? What is your way to victory?“ Succeed.

The Small = The small win. Keep yourself small. Stay umassuming and you will win. Proceed with small steps. What are your goals? What is your way to reach them? Success?

On the bottom line, old yin means: The Proud Bird = A proud bird flies to high and falls. Don’t brag about your abilities and success. Keep yourself down to earth and unassuming. Be a secret Master. Appear modestly and as a servant to all. Then you will have success in your efforts.

On the second line, old yin means: A Small Success = You do not achieve as much as you hoped. Be happy for your small success. The wise do not make themselves dependent on success in the outer world.

On the third line, old yang means: Careful Action = If you are not careful, someone can hit you from behind. Evil is sometimes sneaky and can surprise you. The small are aware as to whether danger threatens by connecting with their opponent mentally and thereby anticipating their behavior in advance. The small can then plan all possible attacks and protect themselves optimally. Deal sensitively and in the right amount. This way you will win.

On the fourth line, old yang means: Persistence = Do not attempt to force anything. Go your way consistently with wisdom and love. Success comes on its own.

On the fifth line, old yin means: The Small Meet the Wise = The small meets the wise. He hears his advice. This way he finds the right path. What does your inner wisdom say? What is your goal? What is your situation? What is your way to victory? Success.

On the top line, old yin means: Cooperation Between the Small and the Large = The small pass by the wise and the bliss disappears. Strength without wisdom has no longterm success. The energy is used for false paths. Anchor yourself in wisdom. Proceed with perseverence. Success.

On the third line, old yang means: The Expansiveness = The emperor of China has put his land into order. Now he is expanding. What is the next step after your victory?

On the fifth line, old yang means: The Small Sacrifice = A small sacrifice at the right time is more beneficial than a large sacrifice at the wrong time. Be consistent along your way. What are your next goals? What small sacrifice do you need to make to reach your goals? Success.

I nibbled on the salad to ease the feeling of the awkward atmosphere. Then Hayle smoothly changed the topic of the conversation.

“Come to think of it, sister. Are all the dresses ready for the Prince’s upcoming banquet?”

‘Oh, that reminded me….’

The novel’s original male protagonist is the Crown Prince. I expressed deep nostalgia for the fact that so much time had already passed since I was adopted by the Argent family.

The birthday banquet of the Crown Prince is being held for his 20th birthday.

“Yes, I’ve ordered it all in the right sizes. The finished pieces will arrive soon.”

Hayle took the time to capture his thoughts. Then he replied with a bright smile.

“You look beautiful in anything and everything you wear. A new dress will only draw attention to your beauty that no other lady in the empire can even dare to compare to.”

I gave an awkward smile as my fingers fumbled at the charming words. The brightness of his smile twinkled in his eyes as he continued to speak.

“Will you be so kind as to show me the dress first when it arrives, sister?”

‘Ah, you’re going to be envious of this?’

We had a little conversation as usual. Kyle always disliked how I gave my attention to Halye over him. A short conversation between us would make his mood instantly turn sour.

I swallowed the saliva in my dry mouth. I wanted to run away from the situation, but I gave a short nod with a tight smile to Hayle’s question.

I couldn’t tell at which point hunger disappeared. I put down my fork because I felt I might get indigestion if I tried to eat.

The place I’ve lived at for nearly 14 years strangely felt awkward today.

More than the first day I came here as the Marquis’ adopted daughter.

There was only one person who called me like that in this spacious mansion.

Hayle’s twin brother and the Marquis’ youngest son.

I trembled for a moment as I remembered last night, when the way he called for me was quite intense. I tried to hide my thoughts with a smile as if nothing had happened.

“Yes, Kyle. What’s the matter?”

He approached me and when he was just a few inches away his arms snaked around my waist.

“Are you going to show Hayle the new dress first, sister?”

“The first person to see you in your new dress will be Hayle.”

Kyle snapped as his words came off with great emotion. It was strange to see him act like this, and I gave a soft answer to calm him down.

“Well, I don’t know……”

I avoided his gaze and blurted out my response. Then he pouted his mouth and whined.

“No, you’ll show me first. Don’t worry about the others.”

“You like me better than Hayle.”

“You felt so good yesterday that you said you liked me better.”

“K-Kyle. Are you crazy?”

I said to him in a whisper as I tried to give him a stern look. Unlike my serious facial expression, Kyle brightly smiled with a playful glint in his eyes.

“Maybe I’m crazy for you?”

I sighed as I answered dryly to Kyle’s mischievous manner of speaking.

“I’m telling you this because I don’t want anyone to hear about it. Let’s be more careful.”

“But it’s true that you liked it yesterday.”

I remained still and speechless as I couldn’t deny it. It was like he knew that he hit the nail on the head.

Yes, it was an undeniable fact.

In the empire it was illegal for there to be incestuous marriage. Even if it was legal, it was impossible to do it with multiple family members.

In reality, the three of us are legal siblings. We were not meant to be lovers that spend long sleepless nights together or whisper love with affectionate caresses.

There could be a change in relationship from friends to lovers. It never changed between siblings. I had no intention of turning our relationship that way.

Kyle opened his mouth to say something. I had an instinctive feeling that I shouldn’t listen to it. I cut him off on purpose. I knew it was rude, but I didn’t want to hear what he had to say.

“Yesterday was a mistake, Kyle.”

It was a very harsh and honest remark. I knew I couldn’t leave room for misunderstandings. There was nothing to say to him except this to stop his foolish thoughts.

“I want to get along with you guys just like we used to.”

I knew very well that this boundary established was the least I could do. The fact I needed to was more than ridiculous. It wasn’t the time to be too worried about it now though.

But did Kyle not like what I said? His face wrinkled into a frown. A low voice laced with irritation came out of his mouth.

Kyle let out a short laugh and ran his hand through his hair as if he was dumbfounded. He clearly looked upset. I was deliberately harsh to get through his thick head.

“Kyle. What did you expect us to be lovers because we were entangled once?”

“Of course. I didn’t think that would happen, but…….”

“Yesterday was a one time fling.”

“Are you crazy, sister?”

“No, I will correct myself. Do you want me to go crazy?”

“Why are you being irrational, Kyle?”

“Was last night really a mistake? Was it just a one night stand for you?”

Kyle’s expression crumpled into a contortion of agony. It hurt to see how pained he looked, but I knew I needed to be reasonable.

I understand what happened yesterday should be buried away.

It wasn’t only a matter of straying from the original plot. The biggest dilemma was we were siblings. We were a family, and our relationship couldn’t be anything more.

Kyle sarcastically asked once more when I didn’t answer.

“I’m asking you if it was a mistake?”

“Yes, it was. You came into my room by mistake last night, and I was forced to go along with it.”

As soon as I finished speaking, I heard a laugh coming from him.

It wasn’t just Kyle and I. Hayle was just as involved in this issue as us. The three of us. There were acts committed last night that society deemed taboo and illegal.

What if someone found out? The thought alone almost made me lose the strength in my legs from the dizziness in my head.

‘I’d rather run away if it came to that.’

I chewed on my bottom lip as the endless imagination of the wrong decisions could lead to a cruel fate. Kyle’s eyes turned cold as he looked into mine.

“You’ll regret your words.”

“It was not easy for us to openly make a nightly visit to you.”

“Hayle and I have been looking at you for years, yet.…”

“Ha, you still don’t get it.”

I felt suspicious over the usage of the word ‘years’. I came to comprehend that the original work was far twisted then it let on. It was even more apparent when Kyle’s words proceeded.

“Yesterday was a one time fling, right?”

“Yes, of course. It was, so I’ll do as I please.”

I looked Kyle straight in the eye at the incomprehensible words, but he didn’t answer to help me understand. It only clouded my mind further with bewilderment.

“We didn’t do anything you really hated.”

“If you’re going to turn your back on this, can you really ask me to behave with you like before after all we’ve done? What if I’m more disobedient than you think?”

I had the consciousness to be nervous about what could take place in the future. Something felt off, and it could be that I hit a nerve with Kyle. My mouth went dry at the idea.

‘Come to think of it. What happened to Kazef, Hayle, and Kyle in the original story….’

I pondered over the novel’s plot, when I tried to remember their future that I had forgotten.

Anyway, none of them ended up getting married for some reason.

This situation might get out of hand if I’m not careful.

What Does “Aishiteru” Mean? And Why Japanese Rarely Say It

One of the most used Japanese phrases in romantic anime, manga, movies, and Japanese dramas is “Aishiteru“. But while it is fairly easy to translate the phrase into English words, its true meaning is so much deeper. After living in Japan for several years I finally understood what “Aishiteru” really means in Japanese and why it is hardly ever used in real life.

The literal translation of “Aishiteru” (愛してる) is “I love you” or “I’m in love with you”. But it expresses such a sincere and deep love that Japanese only use it in long-term relationships with their spouse and very emotional situations such as getting married or when someone is on their death bed.

This might be surprising but most couples – even married ones – will never use this phrase to say “I love you” in Japanese. If you want to confess your feelings or express your love to someone, there are better ways and phrases to do so. So let’s take a look at how the Japanese really convey their love and how to say “I love you, too”.

The Meaning of “Aishiteru” in Japanese

愛 (ai) is the Japanese word for “love” and 愛する (aisuru) means “to love“. If we break it down even further we actually have the word for love 愛 (ai) and the verb する (suru) which means “to do“.

してる (shiteru) or している (shiteiru) is the present continuous form of する (suru) and translates as “doing” or “is doing“. So if you translate the phrase 愛してる (aishiteru) to English in its most literal way it actually means “loving” or “am loving“.

Unlike in English, the words “I” and “you” are implicit and therefore not needed. Omitting the subject and even the object is a very common practice in everyday Japanese and while it might feel counter-intuitive adding them will just make you sound unnatural.

However, this is such an exceptionally romantic way to express your feelings and the phrase has such a profound meaning that you will frequently come across it in movies, anime, and song lyrics, but you will rarely or probably never ever hear it in a real-life situation.

If you want to confess or express your love in Japanese it is better to use 好き (suki) 大好き (daisuki). Daisuki literally translates as “like very much” but it is a common phrase when someone wants to convey their feelings of love verbally.

When to Use “Aishiteru” in Japanese

The Japanese phrase 愛してる (aishiteru) conveys such sincere and deep feelings for one another that it is only used when you declare your serious love in a long-term and permanent relationship.

This already becomes evident when you take a look at the grammar of the Japanese phrase. In English, we say “I love you” while in Japanese, the present continuous form “loving” is used to emphasize the ongoing (ever-lasting) state of the feelings.

So you can use the phrase for example when you want to say “I love you” to your wife or husband. But you would not use it with your girlfriend or boyfriend, especially if you have just started dating. As I mentioned before, in this situation, it is more common to say “Daisuki”. What might surprise is that even married couples will rarely use these words to express their love. One of my Japanese friends told me that the one and only time she said 愛してる (aishiteru) to her husband was on the day of their wedding when they exchanged the rings during their marriage ceremony.

This sounds utterly unromantic, I know, but there are actually some really interesting cultural reasons and beautiful thoughts behind this. I will explain why in a second, but there is one more situation I want to mention before we move on.

When you are parting ways with a dear friend or when a beloved one is on their death bed you can say or might hear the phrase 愛してる (aishiteru), too. In this situation, the phrase becomes an affectionate final goodbye that expresses one’s deep love and respect for that very person.

Why Japanese Hardly Ever Say “Aishiteru”

In contrast to other cultures, especially the ones in the west, Japanese people tend to be more reserved about their feelings and they do not say “I love you” on a regular basis. Neither to family members nor to friends or their better half.

Instead Japanese prefer a more subtle way of expressing their feelings and usually convey their love in a nonverbal way through actions. In a similar way to how the Japanese phrase 愛してる (aishiteru) implies an ongoing state and action, Japanese people rather act love than speak love.

Mothers, for example, express their love for their children through beautifully arranged and healthy Bentos (boxed lunch). Friends might make a detour, sometimes even by train, just to spend some more time together after school, and each couple will have their very own way of acting love.

My married friend for example who lives in the countryside expresses her love for her husband through cooking, too. She doesn’t really like cooking and she was really horrible at it when they got married. But for him, she tried her best every day and got better and better at it.

Another friend of mine who lives in Tokyo gets small but meaningful presents from her husband nearly every week or every other week. While she, on the other hand, spends a lot of her free time planning fun family trips and events so that they can have a lot of quality time together.

The beautiful idea behind this is that if you have a relationship so profound that you could actually use the 3 special words “I love you”, or well the one special word in Japanese 愛してる (aishiteru), there is no need for it. The love for one another is mutually understood without explicitly stating it.

Personally, I think this way of conveying one’s love is so much more meaningful and romantic than just uttering the words “I love you”. Actions speak louder than words, don’t you agree?

How Do You Respond to “Aishiteru”?

First of all, if somebody uses the phrase 愛してる (aishiteru) to say “I love you”, congratulations. Now that you know how much this Japanese word actually means I am pretty sure you also want to know how you can respond in an appropriate way and say “I love you, too”.

When someone says 愛してる (aishiteru) to you in Japanese, it is common to respond with 私も愛してる (watashi mo aishiteru) which means “I love you, too”. You can also express your gratitude and happiness first by saying ありがとう (arigatou, thank you) or 愛されて嬉しい (aisarete ureshii, thanks for loving me).

However, always remember how serious and profound 愛してる (aishiteru) already sounds. So I would be a bit careful with adding too much emphasis and highly recommend you not to overdo it with your answer. Or otherwise, it will just make you sound fake or insincere.

Last but not least, I have one more recommendation and piece of advice for you, especially for the women among you.

If a Japanese guy goes out of his way and really says “Aishiteru” to you, I personally would never respond with just 大好き (daisuki) or even 好き (suki). The other way around it might be okay, but as a woman, I would at least match the phrase and its profoundness by also using 愛してる (aishiteru).

The Four Loves

Love is the most important value of all. Everyone needs to love and be loved in return. This trope applies when a character’s main motivation is to love, be loved or both.

Because the word «love» can apply in many situations and circumstances, the ancient Greeks divided the concept of love into four different types (later expanded upon by C. S. Lewis in his The Four Loves):

A fifth love, rarely mentioned in modern times, was called «xenia». Translated precisely as «guest friendship», we know it today as the Ancient Greek concept of Sacred Hospitality. It was so important to the Greeks that its patron was Zeus himself, in the epithet of Zeus Xenios.

Also referenced as a minor note are loves for non-human things. Love for an animal (such as a pet) is redirected to storge according to C. S. Lewis, while modern animal rights proponents might argue for the inclusion of animals in general in agape, but love for nature and love for country are most noted as love for non-human things. Likings and preferences (for food, activities, etc) are also discussed especially as you can admire an object (like a painting for instance) just as you can admire a person.

It is notable that these are rough categories of love and not exclusive to each other. That is, more than one can appear between the same people. For instance, if Alice meets Bob at a Sci-Fi convention and they continue to get together to talk about sci-fi, then they have philia. If Alice and Bob in the process become each others’ Love Interests, they will also have eros, but if they still get together to talk about sci-fi they still have philia. If they are Happily Married for so long that they grow old together and like each other’s company simply because they are there, that is storge. And if they make Heroic Sacrifices for each other, that is agape. In general, philia will normally make storge arise in time, and in the absence of hindrances (look here for a list) it’s likely to bring about eros as well.

Related to Like Brother and Sister and I Just Want to Have Friends. Agape is also a Super-Trope of Heroic Sacrifice and all four (well five) can be expressed by an Act of True Love.

Wounded hearts: Do they complete each other?

Just know that this is NOT a conventional rom-com. Yes, it does incorporate a good deal of heart-fluttering sweetness, and some wonderfully timed comedic moments, but this drama is largely a layered dissection of human relationships and all of the accompanying emotions, and it truly emphasises just how upbringing can affect one’s life priorities and decisions. It is an angsty, and introspective, yet still very warm and sentimental journey about people figuring out how to cope with trauma and loneliness, with the main focus on the fractured relationship between two ex-lovers who unexpectedly meet again.

[ The intriguing set-up ]

One half of our main couple comprises of Choi Woong (played by Choi Woo Shik), who was raised by loving parents in a comfortable financial state. He is an artistic, free-spirited and quirky guy, who saunters through life at a leisurely pace, devoid of a proper dream. The other half is Kook Yeon Soo (Kim Dami) who was raised by her grandmother, and laden with debt following her parents’ death. She is much more driven and over-achieving, and very insistence on her success to turn her life around, and finds romance to be a luxury that she can’t afford.

Their story begins in high school and they initially shown to be bickering extremes who revel in pushing each other’s anger buttons, and would probably be more willing to maim rather than marry each other. But since love and hate walk a very fine line, the couple soon ends up falling head over heels for one another, and they date for five years. It isn’t completely smooth-sailing, and there are some rocky times as they struggle to find their place in each other’s lives especially throughout certain pivotal life milestones, but there are also some glimmering and very beautiful moments that showcase the depth of their connection.

However, their relationship implodes one day when Yeon Soo suddenly drops the brutal break up card, and the reasons behind it remain a mystery that both the viewers, and Woong himself, desperately desire to uncover and understand. Unfortunately, without answers at the time, the couple ends up parting ways. Luckily, by the whims of fate, following a lengthy separation, they cross paths again when their adult lives somehow intersects once more. It is coincidentally at a time when the documentary they filmed together in high school suddenly becomes viral and they are then pestered to film a reunion version. This brings us to our current present day time line.

Excessive time shifts can understandably be fairly annoying when heavily used, but the script-writer seamlessly interweaves the past and present timelines here with careful finesse by using the documentary footage and interviews in an almost meta nature where the characters are able to share their inner thoughts, feelings and motivations to the viewer watching. The audience is also transported back to various events in the past, occasionally through each character’s own perspectives, and it highlights how some memories can be so markedly different when they are coloured by individual subjectivity.

So kudos to the production team for how the narrative was unfolded in such a creative manner.

[ The nuanced exploration of individual arcs ]

There isn’t a wild or extraordinary plot-line here. The show is driven instead by the captivating (yet also frustrating!) dynamic of our couple and the people connected to them, and is especially grounded in its realistic and flawed characterisations. No one in this drama is perfect or ideal, but rather, they are all absolutely human and much more relatable in certain ways.

In order to hide her multitude of insecurities, Yeon Soo’s defence mechanism is to immediately throw up a fortress of prickly walls around her and she brandishes stubborn pride as her shield, while Woong’s is to shut down and either wallow in a state of non-functioning depression or indulge in childish and petty behaviour. But the drama soon steadily unfolds the rationale behind their deep inner wounds, and calls to attention their vastly differing love languages (W: acts of service; YS: words of affirmation) and makes it clear, the immense lack of communication that will possibly remain their major downfall, second time around, if they don’t learn how to compromise and be more open and willing in their understanding of each other.

Some people have faulted this show for being too meandering in its pace, labelling it cyclical and draggy in addressing the conflict at times, which I won’t 100% refute because it is somewhat true, but personally, I feel that the back and forth trailing tempo was necessary to remind us that growth can often times be a very slow and very painful process. Navigating trauma caused by issues such as familial abandonment, poverty, bullying and the after-effects from a horribly messy break up amongst other issues aren’t that easily overcome with a just magical snap of fingers, and I’m thankful that this show doesn’t romanticise or blow over the problems some of the characters face too quickly in favor for hurrying the romance.

We get to see their gradual changes as characters attempt to heal, or at least come to grips with learning how to survive after having taken hit after hit after hit; or even better yet, learning how to live well again despite their previous scars that will never vanish. There’s a saying that grief doesn’t shrink with time, but maybe, we can grow around our grief instead.

[ Stellar Acting Performances ]

Although there are quite a number of thoughtful words spoken, it is actually more in the quiet moments and the lack of dialogue at times that allow us to truly feel how powerful emotions can be. Our main actors, especially Choi Woo-Shik and Kim Dami, embodied their characters so remarkably well, and were completely exceptional in expressing the tumultuous and raw feelings associated with the fear of loving someone. Both their micro-expressions and their EYES just reflect all of their unsaid words and pent-up emotions that threatened to overwhelm them so wondrously. And the duo also manages to balance the occasional sweet sentimentality with their comedic timing so well, and their chemistry together is totally off the charts.

The rest of the cast is superb as well and they bounced off each other perfectly during several of the group scenes. Kim Sung Chul is excellent as usual in his portrayal of the conflicted Ji-Woong, who has the burdens of family troubles and also has to weigh up the age old question of love versus friendship. Park Jin Joo is charming as Yeon Soo’s best friend Sol-Yi, and her dynamics were matched well by Ahn Dong Goo, a relative newcomer who plays Koo Eun Ho, Woong’s manager and friend.

[ A+ production value and cinematography ]

One of my absolute favorite points of Our Beloved Summer is the amount of detail taken to craft the world they belong to. The settings are ever so picturesque including the especially dreamy and lush forest and beautifully calming surrounding village they visit midway through, the neighborhood they lived in is so cozy and quaint, yet so very aesthetically pleasing with the mix of modern and hanok architecture, and Woong’s own studio is literally a piece of artwork in itself.

The drama also employs a more muted and desaturated color palette that could almost be perceived as washed out on occasion, however, considering it isn’t the straightforward bright and happy rom-com it was initially marketed as, I believe it fit with the evocative atmosphere, and the misty tones lend especially well to the nostalgia and reminiscing nature of the drama.

[ Very Minor Minus Points ]

Unfortunately, I did knock off 0.5 points because I did have some nit-picky quibbles, and I could see why people could have certain issues with the drama, especially when there was just potential for MORE:

Firstly, some of the character development.

Without delving too deep and risking spoilers, I really wish the writer had just focused more on Ji-woong’s own personal demons, including his issues with his mother which was one of the most heartbreaking arcs, and also on his friendship with Choi Woong and the «debt» to his family for the care they showed him, rather than on his half-baked unrequited love story which I personally felt was underwhelming, weak and had no real concrete basis to stand on in the first place. Also, NJ, the last of our quartet played by Roh Jeong Eui, who has to deal with the pressures of being famous including cyber-bullying and her own kind of loneliness, had such great potential with her own story but unfortunately her character’s purpose remained fairly murky through most of the show, especially when she was mostly relegated to being a third party to our main relationship.

Some other side characters, especially the cameo made by Kwak Dong Yeon as artist NuA, and Lee Joon Hyuk as manager Jang Do Yul were all fairly under-utilised. Though, thankfully the plagiarism feud regarding the former was not created to just be a one off plot device, and did come to fruition in episode 15, but the climatic moment just didn’t feel as strong as it could potentially have been, especially if the arc & character had been more fleshed out and more recurring throughout the drama.

Secondly, some of the drama’s own advantages also did become it’s own pitfalls too.

Due to the realism invoked in the script, many of the characters were depicted to be very flawed (as humans always are), and with mistakes made, they (and the paths they decided to tread back & forth on) were inevitably occasionally frustrating to watch and were difficult to root for at times, so truthfully this aspect may put some people off, especially if they are looking for a drama with a faster pay-off and characters to fawn over instead.

So, mileage may vary depending on your expectations.

And lastly, as much as everything was wrapped really satisfyingly, I can freely admit that it was still a tiny bit TOO convenient as certain plot points were resolved a little too neatly and rapidly, especially after having had that push and pull for so long. But since healing is a constant process, even if the drama has chosen to end at such a point in their lives, I have faith that our characters will continue to keep growing and evolving into the future within their universe.

So, despite some honestly minor flaws to me in the grand scheme of this show’s journey, Our Beloved Summer still remains one of my absolute favorite pieces of content that I’ve consumed lately, and I would even go to say it is one of the most impressive and most complete narratives that the romance genre that k-drama land has delivered.

It was a therapeutic, and multi-layered exploration of love and relationships, and it also delivered the message regarding how how the trials of life aren’t actually designed to entirely break us, but hopefully rather, for us to figure out how to overcome such obstacles in order to come through infinitely stronger and tougher.

It also discusses how the people we encounter on our journey through life can change us in ways we may never ever imagine, and it reminds us to try open our hearts to those around us who are more than willing to be a comfort or a refuge through both all of our happy, and our tough times.

If you’re ever in the mood for a very wonderfully touching slice of life show that may or may not have you reaching for the tissues, but will also never fail to place a smile on your face, then look no further. Definitely a top recommended drama. 🙂

That’s a Swedish proverb in my title. I am a winter person, but what good is the cold of winter, without the warmth of summer to give it sweetness? Summer means happy times and good memories as well. One must maintain a little bit of summer, even in the middle of winter in order to remember the warmth that life as well as nature provides you with.

«Our Beloved Summer (그 해 우리는) [2022]» is a story of such warmth, enthusiasm and vehemence; a love story that’s worth telling and worth witnessing. It’s about the growth, the progress and the upswing of a relationship that thrives even on the verge of vanishing. This is definitely an unique tale that’ll bring all kind of emotions out of you and make you experience numerous amount of perspectives of life.

Kook Yeon Soo (Kim Da Mi) and Choi Woong (Choi Woo Shik) were highschool batchmates, persuaded to film a documentary portraying the first and last students of the class together. The documetary goes viral and by the end of the filming, they fall for each other and start dating, which lasts for next few years until they breakup for unknown reason. After 10 years, as they end up working together for a while, they have to film again showing their current situations. How will they cope up with the lingering feeling for each, as they move forward in their lives individually? Well, for that, you have to watch the drama by yourself.

Choi Woong is an Innocent, ingenuous and artless teenage guy whose free-spiritedness has made him the last student of his class though noone has been able to recognize his skills & intellect and what his future beholds. Kook Yeon Soo is a brilliant student, though self-centered and a lil unkind. Despite everyone’s assumptions about her she lives an honest life by adapting to her reality.

Kim Ji Woong (Kim Sung Chul) has been the closest friend to Choi Woong since elementary who has now become a documentary PD. NJ (Roh Jung Eui) is a super-successful Idol star who is very honest and kind-hearted. Go Eun Ho (Ahn Dong Goo) is a friend to Choi Woong and his manager. Lee Sol Yi (Park Jin Joo) is the only friend of Yeon Soo and a pub owner. Jung Chae Ran (Jun Hye Won) is the Asst. PD at SBC.

Some old, familiar and experienced faces among supporting character are Seo Jung Yun (Lee Yun Ok) and Park Won Sang (Choi Ho) as Choi Woong’s mother and father respectively. Cha Mi Kyung (Kang Ja Kyung) as Yeon Soo’s grandmother. Jo Bok Rae (Park Dong Il) as the main PD at SBC.

The child actors for Choi Woong and Ji Woong, Song Ha Hyun and Kim Ji Hoon also did a great job. They were so cute and were able to portray demanded emotions aptly.

Special mention to Lee Joon Hyuk and Kwak Dong Yeon who played guest roles with badboy characters which actually felt like guest roles.

The plot development is steady though it doesn’t look like it bcs of longer reminiscences from their highschool days and some flashbacks from their childhood. At the beginning of each episode, they show the progression of the 3 main characters when they were immature teens; combining them won’t seem like a consistent tale bcs there are 3 different pov-s for each of them, which is fairly balanced. Also, some of the episodes in the later half, exceptionally, has the pov-s of the current timeline, one of which is given to NJ. Similarly, the ending of each episode is accompanied by epilogues to provide the audience with references.

The pacing is the only problem that lies with the production and editing. It isn’t consistent; somewhere slow and somewhere fast. This could have been avoided but it was manageble for me ngl. Talking about the episodic progression, It took me 2 episodes and a half to be hit by the mood of the drama. The furtherance was good, 4th was a bit off in terms of substances, I felt. The ending of 6th felt like an ending of a story itself, I mean ep1-6 somehow felt like a show. And I was wary about what more is left. But to respond my questions, they provided me with a unhurried, warm and beautiful journey while the two parties go on a quest of love and attempt to eradicate all the odds on their way.

The finale week (15th & 16th) came as a surprise. Just when I thought they’ve forgotten about few things and are gonna end the show with cute moments and jolly fillers, they slapped me with the most important topics to be considered. I am so so so happy they didn’t forget them. Honestly, I think those 4 episodes could be better executed but fine. The last 2 episodes are like truckloads of sadness and pain, they got many peak moments and tend to be gloomy for most of the parts. All loose ends were wrapped well in there and even though a lot of things happened in the last episode, it didn’t feel rushed.

This is the directorial debut for Kim Yoon Jin PDnim who was, in fact, the producer for one of the 2020 best «It’s Okay to Not be Okay». Despite that fact, the job he has done in this drama is so first-rate that it proves all the competence his skills behold. The screen editing, the screenplay management, the storytelling method and the overal execution is well taken care of. The pacing was perfect for the genre providing apt vibes; it’s not exactly a warm pure romance but the painfully beautiful vibes wouldn’t have been felt without the moderately slow screenplay. The cinematography is perfect; given the genre, mood and messages the story wanted the audience to catch, it was quite successful in doing that. It is beautiful and particularly the warmth could be felt through the camera lenses.

Nam Hye Sung PDnim is a super familiar name among the Korean composers and has composed for so many dramas, on the top of that for many excellent ones. There are 13 OSTs in total (by the time I write this) and I seriously love all of them. I usually cite my most fav or top 2 but I wanna mention more than that.

#1 «The Giving Tree» by Lee Seung Yoon is my most favourite. The soft beat song with pleasing vocals is about reminiscing the sweet memories of the past whose warmth is still heartfelt.

#2 «Drawer» by 10cm again is again about reminiscence but with a romantic and aesthetically beautiful tone which could make you cry. 10cm never fails to do his job.

#3 «Our Beloved Summer» by Kim Kyung Hee is the theme song for the drama which is a refreshing harmony and pleasant call for love.

#4 «There For You» by Kim Na Young is a soulful and emotional song, which is known to be her forte. It strikes out one’s insecurities in a relationship. I particularly loved the rhythms.

#5 «Summer Rain» by Sam Kim which has the softcore melody that makes your heart flutter, no doubt he is proficient vocalist. The song is a very comforting one.

#6 «Maybe If» by BIBI is a song of ‘What-Ifs’. It narrates various possibilities while dissecting the decisions of past to pick out the regrettable ones. BIBI’s pointed vocal is so on point.

#7 «Christmas Tree» by BTS V is an eulogy to love. It perfectly depicts the art of loving and the feelings of being loved. Taehyung’s vocal is like cherry on the top for this track.

«From a philosophical pov, love is all about giving; it’s what you give, and not what you take.» This is an anonymously quoted line that we all know of but lemme assure that Our Beloved Summer goes beyond all the definitions and breaks all the barriers, in order to come forward with its own interpretations. I will try my best not to spoil while explaining this and please note that the next few paragraphs are descriptions relating to the show’s scenarios.

For the world to become beautiful, the golden precepts to live by are mutual understanding, respect, tolerance, forgiveness, and love. OBS signifies how important these 4 factors are, in love. Love is love, no matter what but one must be aware of how to love and be loved, and to acquire that knowledge, we must be willing to learn each and every day out of it. OBS also shows how important its to learn despite the pacing and time period taken, bcs what matters is when you come back with full comprehension.

The feelings of not being loved anymore leads to insecurity which works like a poison in a relationship. Even in the strongest relationships, the fear of judgement by your partner is the mark of guilt and the burden of insecurities. Self-esteem, ego and reasonable pride are some elements contributing to it and I’m glad they didn’t forget to sort out the lil knots left to untie at the end of the drama, even though it was late.

Honesty is the best policy- as you’ve heard, but my friend! It takes immense courage to be honest in a relationship. We often forget that we are mere human beings, and not magicians who can read others. So it’s important that we tell things to others and also become a good listeners. Hiding is like lying to your own and it accumulates to further treachery. At the same time, opening up to your partner not only relieves the pain to some amount but also comforts your soul. This is another factor they’ve emphasized in the drama.

«Because nothing would happen If I don’t do anything» is a line from this drama which implies that our choices or decisions are what shapes our future. It doesn’t matter whether we joy over it or regret it bcs it’s already too late to go back. We might have another chance to set things straight but that again depends upon the others involved. Because In the end, that was the choice you made, and it doesn’t matter how hard it was to make it. It matters that you did.

«Please keep loving me.» was a desperate call from one of the characters in this drama. We all wish to be loved for only ourselves and nothing extrinsic, but what exactly is the necessity and is that entity sufficiently reserved to elicit love alone? Well, the answer lies in our hearts with some reasoning left for our brains to do.

There is a great gift in conflict that is resolved heart to heart—it’s a deeper understanding. You just need to be willing to do your part to dive deep for the pearl. That’s the greatest message «Our Beloved Summer» gives away to it’s viewers. It simply is being deeply in love than being crazily in love. This drama truly brings out the most basic thing about a dating relationship.

I think I could be the only one but It somehow reminded me of Yumi’s Cell. They’re not similar in any way but the fact, that both of them are about processes and not constant or regular outcomes, is what makes both of them unique. I came here solely for Choi Woo Shik, Kim Da Mi and Kim Sung Chul bcs I have always loved their performances. Not having read the webtoon, I wasn’t expecting much when the drama was still in making but when the hype about it started going up the hill, it took my level of anticipations with it and I am proud to announce that, it has exceeded whatever I thought It’d be.

Final remarks. Our Beloved Summer will remain in the top 10 list of Kdramas based on youth life essence for many years to come. The drama is character-driven and each & every aspect of this drama gets an near perfect score and the credit must go to the entire cast and crew. Couldn’t be grateful to all of them for this beautiful piece of art which is thought provoking and very heartfelt. This is definitely a must watch. My ratings reflect how much I loved it and tbh it had it’s own flaws whicu are in fact negligible but to be fair, I can’t give 10/10 haha.
