Might not A brilliant choice to choose borderlands OST for They Hunger, Thats the best choice I’ve got. It Uses Cry of Fear hands, it is the most comfortable hands to animate with, and most of the weapons are from They Hunger Remod themselves. I don’t know who made Kelly the Skeleton model, I really don’t know, I’ve got it from friend of mine Josesimonapp15, he helped me on finding A good content for this pack.

They Hunger is a single player horror mod for Half-Life developed by Black Widow Games. It is divided into three chapters, which were distributed on the internet over a span of three years. Current distributions of the game include all three chapters.

Overview
They Hunger focuses on a small American town in the 1950s, where the player is an author that has moved to the town to get inspiration for his new book.
The player is suddenly forced to fight for his life against zombies after a freak accident that forced his car into a lake. After fighting through the countryside, he manages to get to the small town but learns that it is overrun as well. However, he is captured by the evil sheriff and is nearly killed when a non-zombified police officer rescues him. The player then fights through the town and ends up at Dr. Franklin’s Asylum, the nexus of the zombie outbreak. After meeting Dr. Franklin and his army of new zombies, called Zorks, the player nearly sacrifices himself to destroys the asylum and Dr. Franklin, who is still in the building when it is destroyed. However, he wakes up in a hospital later and learns that the zombies are still spreading.
He goes back to the Asylum and finishes off Dr. Franklin. Another non-zombified police officer offers to fly the player out of the city after Franklin is killed. However, while the player is flying away, the sheriff appears in a helicopter and attempts to kill them. The player kills the sheriff and manages to escape the doomed town.
One twist in the game is that the player is stripped of all their weapons at the start of each chapter, forcing the player to start from scratch. Otherwise, it plays very similar to Half-Life.
They Hunger borrows some of its art from other GoldSrc games, such as Team Fortress Classic and Counter-Strike. However, it also uses original art developed for the mod and art that was included with Half-Life, mostly the indoor textures.

In the first episode, the player takes the role of a troubled writer who has gone to a country retreat to work on his next masterpiece. However, the player soon hears news over the radio of ‘strange atmospheric phenomena’, and his car crashes into a lake after being hit by a lightning bolt. He escapes the lake and arrives at a mortuary chapel from a maze of catacombs. Here, he discovers the zombies attacking the town. He moves on, passing through a swamp and a volcanic rift called Devil’s Rift, gaining weapons and encountering zombified policemen that are still smart enough to handle firearms. He gets to the town by commandeering a train. At the town, he manages to reach the radio station seen in the intro and call the state police for help. The state police tell him to wait for them at the police station. There, it turns out to be a trap, and he is captured by the undead sheriff Chester Rockwood, who puts him in a prison cell. Trapped, the episode ends with a zombie approaching his cell door to eat him.
They Hunger 2: Rest in Pieces
The protagonist begins the game where the last left off: unarmed and trapped, however just as the zombie is about to enter his cell, the player is saved by a police officer with a rocket-equipped truck. Still unarmed, the player is forced to restock his arsenal himself (though it is possible to re-enter the police station and regain several lost weapons).
The player soon after enters the sewers. There he encounters bizarre aquatic creatures and encounters several state police officers who have been zombified after arriving at the town. The player later makes it to the Rockwell water treatment plant, and it becomes apparent that the army has taken notice of the problem and had started sending troops in to take care of the zombies, though their operation is failing.
A major part of this episode is spent exploring the ‘Rivendale Asylum for the Criminally Insane’ operated by the mad Dr. Franklin, creator of the undead horde. Once inside the player meets Alfred, Dr. Franklin’s former assistant, who tells the player that it was he and Dr. Franklin that discovered strange things in the local water supply that bring anyone alive or dead to a state of half-life. He tells the player that Dr. Franklin was trying to figure out how it was causing the zombies but ended up being infected too.
The player then enters Dr. Franklin’s underground laboratory where he witnesses several of the doctor’s horrid experiments, such as dismembered heads being kept alive. Soon the player is forced to fight an army of undead Frankenstein-like monsters brought to life through Franklin’s machine. Afterward, Dr. Franklin is chased out of the area by one of his own monsters. The player also encounters reanimated skeletons that can shoot bolts of electricity.
The episode ends with the player attempting to escape the asylum, only to set it aflame. The player is caught in a massive explosion which ends the episode.
They Hunger 3: Rude Awakening
The final episode opens as the player awaken to find himself in Rockwell community hospital. A little exploration reveals that it too had been overrun by zombies before the player woke up. After the player leaves the hospital he, on foot, covers several miles of open countryside and arrives at a small farm which has been overrun by the undead. Besides the farmers, most of the local cattle and other animals have also been infected and prove to be quite a danger. He also bypasses a Stonehenge-like structure on the way.
Eventually, the player returns to the now-destroyed asylum. However, the player is again captured and taken back to the countryside at the Stonehenge-like structure. Here, the player witnesses Sheriff Rockwood giving a speech to the zombie hordes which is soon broken up when the army attacks. The player escapes and retraces his steps back to the farm train yard, along the way witnessing the fact that the army is clearly overwhelmed by the zombie threat. After boarding a rail car he once again arrives at the asylum. There he meets Deputy Jerry Hoobs, who has a plan to get himself and the player out of the town through a helicopter. However, he can’t open the hangar door, so the player must fight through the asylum, which is now overrun with zombified soldiers, to meet him on the other side. On the way to the hangar, Sheriff Rockwood and Dr. Franklin (who survived the asylum’s explosion and has been rebuilt as a half-zombie, half-machine cyborg) see the player in the asylum and trigger the alarm. The player manages to reach the helicopter and escape with Hoobs before the zombified security could stop him.
The game reaches its climax as the player and the deputy are forced to fight the cyborg Dr. Franklin at the asylum’s train yard. After the doctor’s defeat, the player is pursued by Sheriff Rockwood in another helicopter with a mounted mini-gun. The player defeats the sheriff and sends him plummeting toward one of the great lakes before exploding. The game ends with the player and the deputy flying off into the sunset while the mod plays «You Are What I Eat» along with the end credits.
Characters
As in most Half-Life games, the player is never seen. He is a male writer, visiting the town to relax and get inspiration for his next book. [1]
Sheriff Chester Rockwood
Sheriff Chester Rockwood
Rockwood is a slightly overweight man; he wears sunglasses and a 10-gallon hat, and he carries his trusty Magnum pistol with him at all times (although he is never seen using it). He was near his re-election campaign before the zombies attacked. Early on in the game, the player learns that Rockwood disregarded the odd reports about zombies as «just hearsay and rumors, likely spread out by his rivals to undermine his position in the upcoming elections.». Rockwood disappeared while investigating a disturbance at the city morgue, presumably leading to his zombification. He works with Dr. Franklin, even in undeath, as he is seen many times through glass and other obstacles talking to the doctor, planning the next stage of the zombie attacks or conversing with his fellow zombies. He dies when the player shoots down his helicopter. His model is a retextured G-Man Model.
Franklin is a scientist in biology as well as the administrator of «Rivendale Asylum for the Criminally Insane.» He appears to have had an accident in the past which has caused damage to the right side of his face. He only has one working eye and a smirk on the right side of his mouth. When the player meets Franklin for the first time it is revealed that he has long felt a calling to re-animate the dead. He was friends with Sheriff Rockwood before the Sheriff became a zombie; they still work together. After the explosion at the end of Episode 2, he is rebuilt as a cyborg, with his left eye, right arm, and leg all mechanical. He also wields a Hivehand-like weapon in his right arm that he uses against the player during his fight. Franklin’s past — with his attempts to re-animate the dead and subsequent exile from the scientific community — may be a reference to Dr. Herbert West from H. P. Lovecraft’s Herbert West, Re-Animator. His model is a retexture of a Black Mesa scientist model.
Deputy Jerry Hoobs
Deputy Jerry Hoobs
A Sheriff’s deputy, Hoobs is heard on two tape recorders before appearing in person near the end of the game. He tried to reason with Sheriff Rockwood but failed and barely escaped the police station. He stayed at the hospital for a while before asking people to come with him to escape the city on foot. After he left the hospital, he left another tape recorder at the cattle ranch. This recording said the Pentagon had authorized the Sherman Scorched Earth policy. At the remains of the ruined asylum, the player meets him in person. They must work together to escape Rockwell and stop the zombie horde. His model is a retexture of a Black Mesa Security Officer Barney model.

Half of the weapons in They Hunger are taken directly from Half-Life while the other weapons are new, though all of the weapons from Half-Life have new models or textures.
They Hunger: Lost Souls
A They Hunger game using the Source engine was announced to be in development in 2005. The full title was given as They Hunger: Lost Souls, replacing the rumored temporary name They Hunger: Source. They Hunger: Lost Souls supposedly entered its final stage of development in September 2006. However, little information has been released about the mod since then. According to Black Widow Games’ lead programmer Einar Saukas, Neil Manke became ill during the development of Lost Souls and he has been unable to contact him since.
Story-wise the game had nothing to do with the original trilogy. The only known thing is that it was supposed to take place somewhere in the Northern-Eastern part of Europe in early 60s, and that protagonist was a tourist.

Касательно последнего, был исправлен баг с прицелом, частично поправлено наложение текстур, часть контента была заменена или удалена в угоду атмосферы оригинала.

They Hunger is a single player horror based mod of Valve’s first-person shooter Half-Life. It was released by Neil Manke’s Black Widow Games in three episodes, the first in 1999, the second in 2000, and the final installment in 2001. All three were at one point bundled with the PC Gamer magazine.

In the first episode, the player takes the role of a troubled writer who has gone to a country retreat to work on his next masterpiece. However, the player soon hears news over the radio of ‘strange atmospheric phenomena’, and his car crashes into the lake after being hit by a lightning bolt. Severely wounded and only armed with a recharging flashlight the player moves out to find help. He heads out to a local church and finds an umbrella and med kits to heal himself with. As soon as he starts to leave strange things start happening. A zombie breaks through a coffin and starts chasing him. Player has to smash the zombie down (with the handle of the umbrella he took). He climbs the ladder to the church bell only to find «head crabs» and a dead body. He takes a silenced 9mm Beretta pistol and rings the church bell for help. A vent opens and he climbs in to find some dynamite. He quickly finds himself fighting for survival against hordes of zombies. To make things worse, the police who have been sent to investigate the strange happenings have also been turned into zombies and are still capable of using weapons and equipment, and prove to be a constant threat (as well as a source of ammunition). Once the player gets into town he uses the local radio station to call for the state police. In the end, the player is captured by the undead sheriff and imprisoned. The episode ends with a zombie approaching his cell door to eat him.

Here the player witnesses Sheriff Rockwood giving a speech to the zombie hoards which is soon broken up when the army attacks. The player escapes and once again arrives at the asylum. There he meets a lone deputy who has a plan to get himself and the player out of the town. However he can’t open the door, the player must fight through the asylum and the local theater to meet him on the other side. The player and the deputy take off in a police helicopter.
The game reaches its climax as the player and the deputy are forced to fight Dr. Franklin who has been rebuilt, after taking the full impact of the blast in episode 2, into a half zombie half machine cyborg. After the doctor’s defeat the player is pursued by Sheriff Rockwood in another helicopter with a mounted mini-gun. The player must defeat the sheriff and send him plummeting toward one of the great lakes before exploding. The game ends with the player and the deputy flying off into the sun set while the mod plays «you are what I eat» along with the end credits.
The county of Rockwell
They Hunger takes place in a town called Rockwell, also called «the valley» by Jerry Hoobs. It is never told in which state it is located. The town is surrounded by many cliffs and canyons, many sections of the town are separated by tunnel systems. Of course, technically this is a limitation of the game engine. The town is also part of the rail road system and has its own train station. On the outskirts there is «Rockwell stud bulls,» an apparently family owned cattle company. One of the town’s more notable landmark is a large volcanic chasm which appears to be the town’s main tourist attraction dubbed «Devil’s Rift.» It also has a Stonehenge type structure. The town has its own local radio station, BMRF radio. The town seems to be fairly old, most of the buildings seem well aged and still use coal burning furnaces for the local heating.
Main Characters
The Unnamed Protagonist
The protagonist in They Hunger is never seen. Community thinks that the protagonist is a writer and is visiting the town to relax and get inspiration for his next book. It is not known if the protagonist has ever been to Rockwell before.
Sheriff Chester Rockwood
Rockwood is the main antagonist in the mod. He appears as a slightly overweight man, wearing sunglasses and the Sheriff uniform. On his face, darkened and dried blood is seen in the area between his nose and lips. Based on his state of a sheriff, he is issued a Magnum Revolver side-arm, but never seems to use it in They Hunger. He was near his re-election campaign before the zombies attacked. Early on in the mod, over the BMRF radio, the protagonist learns that Rockwood says that the odd reports about zombies are «just here-say and rumors, likely spread out by his rivals to undermine his position in the upcoming elections.» Sheriff Rockwood was friends with Dr. Franklin, judging from photographs in Franklin’s room’s wall, but later he appears to be in deal with him. Though never seen by the player, Chester disappears while investigating a disturbance at the city morgue. This is almost certainly where he was zombified. It is not sure how much of his original personality was present when the protagonist encountered him. Chester also appears as the leader of the zombies after his infection with Dr. Franklin by his side, as he later gives speech about «Their hunger.»
Dr. Franklin
Franklin is the second antagonist of They Hunger. He is rumored to have created the zombie virus and is a scientist in biology as well as the administrator of «Rockwell asylum for the criminally insane.» He only has one functioning eye and a smirk in the right side of his mouth, while the other eye appears as severely damaged. It isn’t known if these facial problems are a result of the zombie infection or something from years prior. When the player meets Franklin for the first time it is revealed that he has long had a mission to re-animate the dead, it is not known why. He apparently underwent great scrutiny by the scientific community because of this. This is probably what caused him to go to such lengths to study the zombies and the contaminants in the city water. He is friends with Sheriff Rockwood and enjoys hunting.
Deputy Jerry Hobbs
The deputy is mostly an unseen character in They Hunger, and is only heard on two tape recorders in the mod and seen only near the end of They Hunger 3. He appears to have had the similar misfortune as the protagonist had. It is safe to assume that the suit and Hat-Wearing speaker at near the end of They Hunger, and who is later the pilot of the helicopter is Hobbs. It is safe to assume that this may be the deputy, because of their Sheriff-like uniform. In 1 recording, He explains that he tried to reason with Sheriff Rockwood but failed and barely escaped the police station. Based on the recording placement, it is safe to assume that he stayed at the hospital for a while before possibly asking people to come with him to escape the city on foot. It is known that he at least made it to the county side as another tape recorder is found at the cattle ranch. He tells the player that the pentagon had authorized the Sherman Scorched Earth policy. It is not known if he ever managed to escape the town or not. It is quite possible that he is the same character as above.

Согласитесь, что зомби в мире Half-Life не такие уж и страшные. Подумаешь, мертвые люди, которых контролируют, всего-то, какие-то безобидные хеадкрабы. В They Hunger все совершенно не так! Эта модификация о куда более страшном и куда более будоражащим воображение феномене. Этот мод о живых мертвецах!
Все началось с того, что в маленьком графстве Rockwell, после неизвестного аномального атмосферного явления, стали оживать мертвые люди и как это водится по закону жанра, пытаться отведать немного живой плоти.
Главный герой мода – некогда известный писатель, ныне путешествующий по стране, с целью найти хорошее местечко, чтобы дописать свою книгу. Не успев прибыть в пункт назначения, по радио передали о странном явлении, и вскоре в машину героя попадает молния, вследствие чего она оказывается в овраге с водой. Герою приходится самому выбираться и идти искать помощь. Немного погодя ему встречается церковь, пытаясь найти в ней хоть кого-то и попросить телефон, герой натыкается на мертвое тело священника. И вот тут начинается настоящий кошмар, как будто все самые ужасные сны воплотились в реальность.
Дружественных персонажей в моде не много, в основном это мирные жители, которые вам ни чем не помогут, но также попадаются выжившие полицейские, которые с легкостью помогут прорваться через полчища мертвецов.
Главных злодеев в игре несколько – это местный шериф и чокнутый доктор, который возможно приложил руки к происходящему. Герой встречает их на протяжении всей игры, но финальные битвы происходят только в конце мода.
И конечно, по законам жанра, узнав про сложившуюся ситуацию в графстве, с целью предотвращения распространения зомби-вируса, власти послали на зачистку армию. Солдаты такой народ, который сначала стреляет, потом разбирается, поэтому главному герою придется противостоять еще и значительному количеству правительственных войск.
Возможно это из-за того, что They Hunger состоит из трех глав. Изначально каждая глава создавалась отдельной модификацией. И только чуть позже стала распространяться как единый продукт. И вот уже несколько лет ведется разработка четвертой главы на движке Source, под названием Lost Souls.
Для фанатов Half-Life старой школы данный мод стал и до сих пор остается своего рода классикой модификаций для Half-Life. Новому поколению, которое воспитывается на продуктах Source, в частности на Left 4 Dead, данный мод может не понравиться. Но не надо забывать, что модификация вышла в далеком 1999 году, поэтому нет смысла сравнивать ее с Left 4 Dead в принципе.
They Hunger является той самой игрой, у которой есть душа и в которую еще долго будут играть. Всем уважающим себя фанатам первого Half-Life обязательно советую поиграть (если вы еще этого не сделали), а также ценителям хорошего геймплея, для которых не важны новейшие графические навороты.

Another great must play. The makers of this mod improved more and more with any of the three episodes they released. 5/5
Every single episode have great mapping and new weapons, enemies and zombie varified models. Watch out with the zombie bull, REALLY.
I recommend this mod even to those people that think “man, I’m sure there’s no soldiers in this mod, it will be pitifull boring”, cuz action is there anyway.

Review: Simply stunning. This mod is terrific. Its long, not too difficult, has a great story, and put together very nicely. Out of all the mods here, this is the one to go get. Neil Manke put together a very nice, challenging, and amazing SP mod. The textures are all brand new, the weapons are all brand new, the story is all brand new…you get the picture. There are three chapters in this story. Basically, you’re a person who is trapped in a town where everyone is zombies, made possible by a mad-scientist from the local loony hospital, and you have to destroy him, and all his friends. There are new monsters, new people, new weapons, new everything.
I guess I cant really knock off too many points for low-res textures, considering how old the HL engine is (I’ve been spoiled by the newer games:). I cannot stress this enough: go get it! There isn’t a thing that you can’t like about this mod. Amazing. Also, word has it that Neil is working on converting They Hunger to Source, so that should be even better!

Can anyone please tell how or what to do to get They Hunger Trilogy to open. The file has been placed in my HL\Steam directory and shows in 3rd party mods in Steam, but when attempting to open the game, after the 2nd attempt crashes to desktop. The game will not load. Please help!
Hey i`ve downloaded this thing just yesterday and im on chapter 3 about 2 or 3 maps from the end… and on a “load” sequence it shuts HL down!! I want to win it!! i`ve played like 8hs straigt and I dont want to I need to finish please tell me is it this download or maybe I ****** up?

As always, make sure you have the latest update of Half-Life (if required) and sometimes it helps if you simply switch to “Software” mode for your graphics until you pass your game crash point.
hey thx but I guess.. ill must download it froma diferent source it dosent work re-instaling they hunger and I have waayyy to many mods to take the trouble of taking out HL to re-instal so ill get just the episode 3 of TH.
Not a whole lot to say here… the mod has an excellent storyline and excellent gameplay, even if you’re not into the whole shambling zombie apocalypse genre. A variety of locales and an arsenal full of spankin’-new and reskinned weapons will keep you engaged the entire time. The story is excellent, and draws on a number of horror movie cliches without itself becoming cliche. It manages to be funny at times, scary at others, and intense throughout. Playing through They Hunger is a halloween tradition of mine. Download it now, and have a great time!
They Hunger is a must for anyone interested in single player mods. The storyline is supreme, and grows as the game goes on. The gameplay is excellent, and worthy of several replays (I couldnt tell you how many times I have played this, and still felt that it was origional and fun!). The textures may be low res, but the map design more than makes up for this. They Hunger is definitly an epic, and a mod that will definitly be remembered. Neil Manke and crew are modding gods, and are currently working on a They Hunger sequel for the Source engine.

I was not the greatest lover of this series with Hunger 1, however, 2 was a great improvement and finally 3 turned the series into a classic.
Hey, I am having the same problem as NoD. In the part of TH3, the train ride, I go down a ladder into a train cart and the ladder brakes and the train starts moving. After a few seconds a loading zone occurs and the game stops. The link above doesn’t help me so please answer my question.

Have you tried installing the third part separately? It might just be a bug and there’s nothing anybody can do. One other option is for a PP reader to offer a save just after this point. Can anybody help?

Hi. I just downloaded this mod and placed it into my half life directory (I can only play Half Life on Steam). I read that to play this mod I need to select it from the custom game menu when I run Half Life. Here’s my problem; my Half Life doesn’t have a custom menu option. I’d appreciate it greatly if someone helped me with this, because it sounds like an excellent mod and I’d love to play it.
As long as the hunger folder is in the half life folder just restart steam and they hunger should be in the steam game menu.

Everything?There was only 1 file.All you had to do was un zip the file and put it in the mods save folder.You can also rename your save folder and make a new one with just that file.Thats what I did to make sure I had the right file to send.
Ok I did what you told me to but now there are no saves at all. When I downloaded your file it was not in a zip folder.
Back again. Synthsteel, are you using the WON version or the Steam version of HL1?? If your using the WON version you have to go to the “custom game” section and activate “Hunger” to see your saves, the “Steam” version is in the console to start the game, both work fine here!
Extract the file from the rar file.Then play start the game then save.Quit the game and put the sav file in the mods save folder.I’ll try doing it in the morning as I just got back from camping but I hate it when something don’t go right.I usually check for both versions and did not this time.

Ok everything extracted and when I loaded the save, the same thing happened. Half-Life closed and I was brought to the send error report screen. Just like what happens when I go to the actuall loading zone.
This mod is great. It took me atleast 8 hours to finish this mod. And the installer turned out pretty fine for me, I didn’t have any problems with it. And as for that train part, I didn’t have any problems with it. I can get you a save file if you want,though by the looks of it, you’ve already got one.
My they hunger is broken I guess. Wierd because I have installed it again several times already.

OK! I can now say that the Complete Series does not work. For me atleast. So I downloaded the separate They Hunger 3 file from vgpro and it worked! Thank you guys for the help and for the save file so I don’t have to start all over. Wish I did not start right beside a headcrab lol but it’s all good, thanks.
Sometimes it doesn’t work with just one save, I’ve had the same problem, too. I don’t know why, or what other saves it needs. It’s a mystery!

I remember playing this mod back in 2001. This mod gave me the most enjoyment than any other that I’ve ever played! There were moments when I jumped in my seat when one of those mutated headcrabs sprang upon me! I love the custom models and voices added to the game as well as the integrated mix of combat and puzzles. The puzzles were never frustrating, unlike the jumping puzzles in many other mods. The final gunfight at the end of the third part was a bit frustrating, but I remember emailing Neil Manke, the creator, for help, and I actually got a friendly reply the next day! I strongly recommend this mod if you’ve never played it before.
I played this mod for the first time when my dad had a cracked old WON half-life disc with PC-Gamer’s promoted They Hunger. Of course I was too young to know anything about it, and it didn’t even work; oh well i’ve made it work at around 2005-6. The first episode brings real horror to you if you try to ignore the freaky voice acting. Aside from that the gameplay was awesome, the atmosphere was easily settling, as I immersed pretty quick in the shoes of the hero. The second episode is where i’ve been stuck the most in, and after a few tries and 1 year pause, i’ve reached some really freaky institute, where more freaky experiments take place, freaky enamies appear. The most memorable enamy, besides the frequent zombies and headcrabs were the frankenstien-looking monsters, created by dr. Franklin’s experimental revivings. I was really scared when one charged at me. The third and final episode starts pretty quick, as you discover the hospital you were housed got overran by the undead too. New weapons, as well as new enamies came to this part of the game. My favourite weapon through the game was the rifle, because it replaces the mp5’s skin and, besides other weapons even though some are freaky, really gives the game the chronologic immersion feel to the player somewhat, because I relate the game’s time to ours. This mod is overall awesome: The level design is purely extraordinary; the textures are somewhat good, since added are few; The weapons this mod feautures are good to shoot and throw at the funny yet nice to combat enamies. The story is simple yet interesting, because, as half-life the story telling tradition, it unfolds secrets like tape recordings and inscriptioned objects. The sounds are perfect as they are, though I reccomend playing this mod without the high definition pack, since it doesn’t add anything but different sounds to a few first weapons. Lastly, voice acting is a bit off, except for the radio man and for Dr.Franklin, and a bit sherrif Rockwood.
It’s a great mod, the atmosphere and design is great, the voice acting is off but don’t criticize and ignore :D. I’ve wrote a full review before but it didn’t post. Have fun playing it!
This is a freaking good mod for God sake…. I’m not so fond of the HL1’s mods, but this one rocks…
The ambiance is absolutly incredible, from the beginning with the first cutscene, to the deserted town, it has also a good story of it’s own, but the most interestinf part is the enemies design : the zombies are absolutly frightening, and their howling “fleeeeeesh”, “huuuuunger”, is very convincing… And there are SO many different enemies/designs, I’m so fan of the skeletons (and also the MINI-skeleton, ha ha!), but there are also bulls-zombies, marines-zombies…
It’s also a good idea to put the Marines in this game, because I’ve always thought they Hunger and HLverse are linked together, such as a virus spreading in water, linked to the headcrabs, and it could transform people in “simple” zombies… The overall design in all the mods is cool, the forest, the catacombs, in the first, the town, the police batiment, the asylum… The last one has some very good moments with the fighting against the Marines, but sometimes it is a little too difficult, such as some fight scenes with the bulls, an helicopter, and the too last boss, despite being very entertaining, are a real pain in the ass… The weapons are also well done, changing the crowbar for a shovel (adapted!)…
But overall, it has no real “weak points”, and it could have been released as a real game… seriously, because there are so many things of HL changed that it could have been a total conversion…

This is a classic HL mod! The only downside is the last boss of episode 3 just has too much health! On hard I use all my ammo and the helicopter only just starts to smoke! Other than that, the whole series is great, and one of my favourites.
Even on easy that happens to me, sure is hard….but a quick “impulse 101” to recharge soon sorts it out… 🙂

It’s certainly been a long time in coming – it’s been over six months since USS Darkstar, reviewed here, was bestowed upon us – but it’s finally arrived. As is made clear in the textfile, this is much more of a break from the norm than his previous release was: “Are you tired of always fighting the same Half-Life enemies? Then accept our invitation for a vacation in a quiet and welcoming small town… They Hunger: a traditional horror story with no soldiers or aliens!” Yes, we’ve strayed into zombie country here.
As we’ve come to expect from Neil’s work, this is far more than a few extra Half-Life levels. In collaboration with his usual partners, as well as some new faces, the look and feel of Half-Life has been given a radical overhaul thanks to a large collection of custom textures, skins, models and sound effects. Every new addition is of stunning quality. The new textures are superb and the zombie skins fit the part perfectly. I’m sure all of you were expecting a visual feast from They Hunger but however high your expectations may be you’ll still be stunned as some of the scenes unfold before you. From graveyards to swampland, everything is brilliantly conceived and executed; I defy anyone to find a misplaced brush or texture in this map set.
Neil’s regular coder, Einar, has again been hard at work modifying the Half-Life code and the combination of his changes and the new weapon models is a treat to behold. Though there’s no dramatic departures from the arsenal you’re used to by now, what’s there is up to the standards of the rest and continues to add to the completeness of the unit.
Indeed, that is undoubtedly the true strong point of this release, as it always has been with Neil’s work. Everything works together here to produce a stunning overall product. The atmosphere is always creepy, created by the cinematic introduction and maintained throughout by the zombie hordes that confront you. Some fantastic set-pieces – the train, the truck, the car – pop up out of nowhere so that you’re always guessing what’s around the next corner. You’ve undoubtedly seen a zombie film at some point and if you ever wondered what it would be like to be in one then They Hunger is basically a pretty definitive answer.
The unit does have some small flaws. The relentless waves of zombies do get a bit much and it would have been nice if there’d been some more variety in the enemies. Though the gun-wielding zombies you meet later on do provide some change, it’s a very long time before you find them and zombie-bashing isn’t the most enjoyable form of combat Half-Life offers. There’s also a bit too much scope for running away from most confrontations thanks to the zombies’ slow speed. Of course, you’re not really playing the unit as it was intended if that’s your approach.
In comparison to the quality of the general gameplay and the visuals that are on offer here, however, these shortcomings really do pale into insignificance. Neil’s usual innovative design is present all the way through and there’s never a moment when you’re not wondering what’s in store for you next. If you approach They Hunger wanting and expecting yet another continuation of Half-Life then you’re probably going to be disappointed. Load it up with an open mind, however, and you’ll find yourself playing what I would rate as the best FPS add-on to date.

The long-awaited sequel to one of the most enthralling Half-Life single player episodes is here. Neil Manke and his supporting team have done it again. Morgan, in his review of They Hunger, called it “the best FPS add-on to date.” The key words in that quote are to date, for now They Hunger 2 – Rest in Pieces is upon us, and it easily eclipses the original.
When we last left our beloved hero at the end of They Hunger, he was trapped in a cell about to be mutilated by a horde of zombies. They Hunger 2 picks up right where the first episode left off, with our hero badly in need of rescuing. Suffice it to say that you do escape the cell, only to find yourself still stuck in the zombie-infested town.
But if you’re thinking that TH2 is going to be just more zombie-whacking, think again. The only real problem I had with the original They Hunger was that it was repetitive. Very repetitive. Not so in TH2. This episode will keep you on your toes, while still maintaining the level of suspense of the original. There are several new monsters, introduced gradually, that will challenge your aim and reflexes.
To deal with these new threats your arsenal is expanded significantly. There are a couple of new melee weapons to be found, with much improved Zombie-Whacking Ability. Also new is a great weapon created by Minh Le of Counter-Strike fame. Be cautious with your ammo, though, since you could easily run low if you are not careful (and creative!).
The architecture and level design are truly second to none. Neil creates well-interwoven, non-linear maps that you can wander for what seems like hours. There are tons of new textures, which are of professional quality and definitely enhance the atmosphere. Your objectives, while always clear, are not easily completed and therein lies the beauty of his design. The many puzzles are non-intrusive because they are integral to the progression of the episode; TH2 is very similar in this respect to both TH1 and USS Darkstar.
There are a number of additional features that really set They Hunger 2 above and beyond nearly every other Half-Life level I have played. First, the storyline, which merely set the mood in TH1, unfolds throughout TH2 and explains more about the town’s situation and the background of the events leading to the, um, ‘zombie problems’ that plague the town. Second, the atmosphere is truly engrossing and certainly adds a level of suspense to the episode. Third, Neil always manages to keep you interested. Not only are there several puzzles to solve in order to advance, but surprises lurk around virtually every corner. Finally, the scripted sequences are clever and absorbing, like the excellent sequences of USS Darkstar and TH1.
The unique ingredient in TH2 is the mood. The horror movie atmosphere is engrossing and suspenseful. It actually had me overly paranoid – there were some subtle clues throughout TH2 that a much more frightening monster was in the area (if you recognize the portrait in screenshot 1 you know what I’m talking about). Thankfully this turned out not to be the case (yet!), but it certainly kept me on my toes.
If I really had to nitpick, there are only a couple things I could find wrong with TH2. First, some of the sounds really bugged me. The voice acting, though very well done, needs more variety. Also, the same old zombie chatter present in TH1 is still around – zombies constantly moan and whine, which kind of annoyed me after a while, especially when the zombie was in a totally different section of the map. Second, the ending was rather abrupt. It wasn’t bad, just a bit abrupt. Like I said, nitpicking.
They Hunger 2 may indeed challenge you. Not only is the combat challenging at times, but its complex layout may leave you wondering what to do next, and Neil’s many surprises may catch you off guard. If you don’t like this type of map, TH2 may not be for you. I, on the other hand, loved every minute of it.
Before USS Darkstar debuted for Half-Life, I had never heard of Neil Manke. I never got into Quake or Q2, so my only experience with Neil’s maps are with those for HL. So far I have seen three outstanding episodes, and I dearly hope to see more in the future. There is no question that They Hunger 2 – Rest in Pieces is his best work to date, and one of, if not the, best Half-Life add-on ever.

Often times epic stories are nicely wrapped up in trilogies: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Lord of the Rings, Alien. OK, so Star Wars is actually going to be 2 trilogies. And they’re making another Indiana Jones film. And The Lord of the Rings had a prequel (The Hobbit). And the Alien saga actually consists of 4 movies (with another likely on the way) and really should have been concluded after the second. So much for making my point. “What point,” you say? Read on, brave adventurer.
They Hunger 3 – Rude Awakening, the biggest and best of the series, nicely concludes the tale begun in They Hunger 1 and developed in They Hunger 2. It’s not often that the works in a trilogy keep improving as they are released, but that is the case here. Pardon the comparison of a series of Half-Life levels to cinema, but overall the They Hunger series is a true saga, not a mere collection of maps.
Some of you out there evidently liked the original TH episode better (see Jiang’s second opinion on my They Hunger 2 review for an example). Neil and his talented team did take a different direction in TH2, with more combat, much more story development, and a little less of the horror motif. TH3 takes a direction of its own. First, TH3 is quite a bit longer than either of the preceding episodes. Second, there is a ton of combat in this pack. Third, there is much less story development than in TH2, with your main objective being to put an end to the Zombie Madness once and for all.
For the sake of thoroughness, I should touch on the qualities that are common in all of the Half-Life packs released by Neil and his team. The level design is simply superb. TH3 sports more of Neil’s trademark intricately interwoven levels. If you are the type of player that is easily frustrated by this type of map, you can always refer to the walkthrough that will inevitably be available on Neil’s site. One aspect that may not be to the taste of all players is that there is a fair amount of backtracking involved in TH3. You will even visit areas familiar to you from TH2 (though they have changed significantly in the meantime). The levels have great lighting, nifty textures, and plenty of hidden rewards sprinkled throughout the maps. The new monsters and weapons are all well modeled and skinned. There are a number of clever sequences/setpieces included as well. Nothing quite as much fun as mowing down hordes of zombies in a locomotive as in TH1, but they are nonetheless impressive and cleverly designed.
A couple of things set They Hunger 3 above and beyond the others in the series. TH3 is loaded with it. As in the other episodes, there is no armor available, so you have to be that much more careful with your precious health. To make it even tougher on you, there are a bunch of new enemies to fight (including a whole slew of new zombies). This time there are soldiers (both the normal and the zombie variety), and my personal favorite, the dreaded Zombie Chicken. Also you will face a couple of monsters that are actually faster than you and they will run you down. To top it all off, the finale is one of the most challenging sequences I’ve faced in a long time – just the way I like it. In fact, Neil has decided to make a small file available on his site that will make the final encounter much easier to get through for you wimps out there. 🙂
To conquer these new challenges, you have a few new weapons to play with in TH3, such as: a TFC-style flamethrower, a chaingun, a Taurus handgun, and a medkit which allows you to heal yourself when you choose. All of them come in quite handy in dispatching your foes. My only complaint here is that most of the models are taken from HL and TFC – it would have been much better if these new weapons had new models instead of recycled ones.
One other thing stood out to me as I played TH3 – Neil’s use of sound. It is simply excellent. Although there is the ever-present zombie chatter which can get on your nerves, I am talking about the ambient sounds. They really help to flesh out the settings and add to the mood of the game. And there are some truly spooky sounds included, ones that make you mutter to yourself, “What in the hell was that?”
They Hunger 3 does have some minor issues, some of which are present in more than just this episode. While the ambient sounds are very good, many of the other sounds (specifically, the tape recordings) are awfully quiet and difficult to hear over the din of the incessantly chanting zombies. And one thing I noticed about the new model for the machine gun – the gun that you see as you hold it isn’t aimed directly at the crosshairs. This didn’t cause me major problems, but as I played I realized sometimes I aim by sight and not crosshairs, resulting in completely missing my target. Neil usually does a pretty good job with making all his locked doors make a ‘locked’ sound when you try to open them, but I noticed several in TH3 that made no sound at all when you tried them (one of my pet peeves). Finally, there’s the funky trees. Neil uses 2D sprites for most of his trees, which turn to face you as you move. They look OK as long as you’re not above them looking down, because then the trees look like they’re severely slanted as they are facing directly at you. Beyond the sprites, there is a tree texture used for backdrops in some of the outdoor areas in TH3, which, quite frankly, looks bad. The colors are ugly and the texture looks pixellated. You may think that of all the professional-quality textures Neil has made, that I am really nitpicking by complaining about a certain one. You’d be right. But this texture is prevalent in a number of the TH3 maps and it really stands out.
They Hunger 3 – Rude Awakening expands on the superb design and gameplay found in TH2. It adds more weapons, enemies, and combat, and the finale consists of a couple of memorable and very challenging battles. It wraps up the They Hunger trilogy nicely, and as much as I’d like to see Neil make more Half-Life single player maps, I think this series is best laid to rest as is – a thoroughly enjoyable experience not to be missed.

Darkness. My body hurts! Or is it my brain? The explosion! I remember it now. Maybe I’m in a coma? Or even worst, I may be already dead. Everything is so confusing. Zombies, monsters and ghosts from the past are filling my mind. Oh God, so many memories mixed with my dreams! I can’t even distinguish them anymore. What if my entire life was just a nightmare? But it felt so real. Wait, what’s that sweet voice? Sounds like a nurse! THAT is part of reality, I am sure. Now if I could just concentrate on this voice and try to wake up.

Briliant work.. Models:9 Models were great..For the age of this mod i’m suprised some mods can’t even get a litle bit close to them..Altough the skeletons are similiar to vortiguants (They are reskinned vortiguants)the fleesh creeature sounds just makes it scary..I say models are HD enough and that you don’t need UD to play but just the good old models.. Gameplay:10 Gameplay is amazing..When you think that you’ve seen everything in the episodes something new appears..Like in episode 3 Rude awakening where from a hospital you end up in a zombie farm..Gameplay was made specifically for this kind of stuff..It was great.. Story:10 This mod has a deep story..As you go further into the mod and reach episode 2 you find out that doctor Franklin found a special chemical that brings back corpses to life and that that’s how the cheriff was zombified.. Maps:9 Maps were almost perfect..They could get confusing sometimes but the reason i don’t give it 9 out of 10 is because the trees could use a lil more detail but everything else is set great..The detail in episode 1 to episode 3 is increasing.. Sounds:10 Sounds are amazing..The voice actors knew what to do..The heads that talk really are creepy and the frankenstein monsters are amazing on voice..The skeletons can creep you out by saying «fleeeesh cretuuure» or «so fat» or even «aaaah fleeesh».. Props:10 This mod has allot of props..From what i see even in episode 1 they’re rich on them..Episode 3 just shows off major props like the steam engine they made..All i can say is props look great.. 10 out of 10..
For players:Please play this mod..Once you do you won’t stop untill you realise it’s so great..Who ever thinks this mod isn’t good must have bad taste because this is «one of those» mods which doesn’t seem to mess up anything and is ballanced..This mod should’ve ben declaired a stand-alone game or expansion..Moddb users who read this..Please vote 10 and play it!

When I first played this mod I didn’t know what to expect. Well, I expected tons of Zombies and stuff but that’s not the point. The mod pulls you in with its cool intro and scripted sequences. When just wandering around the church grounds, you often hear «Hungerrr» or «Freshh», even if no zombies are around. This has players dumbfounded and searching each corner for something to jump at them. Now down to the real part of the review.
Graphics: 5/5 The graphics in They Hunger are the old-school 3d fps graphics. Models look good, from Zombies to Civilians, from the Shotgun to even the Umbrella, the models and textures show hard work, and much time put into it.
Gameplay: 5/5 They Hunger has more to it than just mindless Zombie-bashing, there are puzzles and some mazes to be discovered when you play this mod. Maps are sort-of linear, but sometimes you will just be asking yourself «Where am I supposed to go?». Other than that, They Hunger also has very detailed maps. The catacombs in the church grounds are heavily detailed and are kind of frightening because of Zombies breaking out of there catacomb. Scripted sequences are also done very well.
Sound: 4/5 Voice acting and sound effects are really one of the greater goods in They Hunger. With cheesy effects to frightening Zombie shrieks, They Hunger really nails it. Zombies groan with dull lifelessness, just like they should. Other characters, like the Zombie Sherrif, have excellent voice acting.
Conclusion: I thoroughly enjoy this mod. IF you like Zombies, horror games and First persons shooters, you will love They Hunger

I can remember the first time I played this, it scared the **** out of me! I loved the quality of the story, mapping and textures! This mod should ALWAYS be the first mod that ANY Half-life player downloads and plays!

I have seen this mod when I was a kid and now, it is my turn to play it. It was a good experience overall. They Hunger follows an unnamed writer who is taking a break from his job and is trying to have some peace in the countryside. Your car gets struck by a lightning and you find your way to the church. As you explore the church, you hear a strange sound coming from the coffin….
The mod itself comes in three parts, each part having their own settings and introducing new things as it progresses. Episode one is, without a doubt, the strongest episode. The buildup before facing the first zombie is well-done, I also like how vulnerable you are at the start. You are equipped with only an umbrella and a couple of pistol magazines, you must choose when to fire or run, kind of like Resident Evil. The way you encounter with the first police Zombie is the greatest moment, you thought you are safe and he turns around and fires at you. Although, I feel like the part of the dam could have been better because it takes too long to get inside, as you have to wait for an NPC while there is an Ichthyosaur in the water.
Episode two is the middle-of-the-road of the episodes, literally and figuratively. It starts off quite strong with a policeman coming at your aid, but for some reason, you have to abandon him somehow. You enter a sewer and the asylum, both places do not outstay their welcome and it was a fun ride too overall.
The third episode is, what I think, is the weakest of all as it feels like it really gives in to the B-rated movie tone it establishes. For the locations, it seems that the creator cannot think up of more interesting locations you want to explore, the only place that stands out for me is the farm and the Stonehenge-looking place. I have to admit about unique enemies in this episode, nurse Zombies, children skeletons, Zombie Chickens and that giant Bullsquid in the lake. (I wish it was used more, such a waste of unique model) The final bosses are too difficult for my liking as the supplies are very limited. The first one is a bit easy, even then, he takes a lot of sniper bullets. The second boss is just plain too hard, he destroys the helicopter to the point that one side is completely open for attacks. He also is even more of a bullet sponge than the former, I was down to my shotgun when it was over. Don’t give me ideas of jumping out and killing him with the melee weapons and the dynamites.
You are much more vulnerable than Gordon in this mod, you never get any access to armor and enemies hit really hard. In the first episode, you get normal Half-Life loadout: pistols, SMG, shotgun, melee, and grenades. There is also one satchel charge in this episode but somehow never seen again. The pistol can attach silencer, which makes it more accurate and I don’t see the reason to have it off. Episode two opens up a bit more and adds two incredibly redundant melee weapons, and an automatic pistol, which is descent. The last episode goes all-in with additions and it gives you another pistol (which I never get to play with it again midway through the mod), the flamethrower (functions like the Gluon Gun but it would be better if the flame effect does not blind you when you use it), and the minigun (horribly inaccurate and takes a while to spin up, only useful against the second final boss).
The enemies are given reskins to fit the horror theme, some enemies are even tweaked. Zombies come in various skins and have cheesy, yet creepy, voice lines. Vortigaunts are skeletons. Alien Grunts are melee-only and appear as Frankenstein monsters. Houndeyes become dogs and lose their shockwave attack. Zombie soldiers and policemen are HECU and Barneys, respectively. These last two are quite difficult to fight, as you have nor armor and they are really accurate with their shots. Episode 3 also introduces Zombie Bulls/Buffalos and they are just unfun bullet sponges in my opinion. It also introduces hands, faster Headcrabs that deal more damage, which are painfully hard to hit due to their size.
I also played with Remod addon, which adds higher-quality skins to every model and weapon. I feel like the Alien Grunts in Remod does not have their hitbox fixed. Their body is completely bulletproof and you have to go for the arms and kneecaps, it makes them unnecessarily difficult to fight them. The mod also changes leeches into piranha fish, which makes them easier to see. I really recommend this addon.
They Hunger is a marvel of Half-Life modding community. Despite its weak finale, it offers a uniquely fun experience with the undead.

Running with STEAM: If you want to run They Hunger mod in Steam, all you have to do is install They Hunger in a «hunger» folder inside «C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\ \half-life». If you do it right, «They Hunger» should appear as a Third-party game in the Steam menu.

Well first of all you will need pak exploler. Second all you gotta do is extract all the pak files in they hunger..Geez guys can’t you think of that seriously!

5 Years Later. Hey uh, I’m trying to extract the files on PAK Explorer & it says to type in the file directory, & the directory is too big, anything to help?

They Hunger is a single player horror mod for Half-Life developed by Black Widow Games. It is divided into three chapters, which were distributed on the internet over a span of three years. Current distributions of the game include all three chapters.

They Hunger focuses on a small American town in the 1950s, where the player is an author that has moved to the town to get inspiration for his new book.
The player is driving in the town, when the radio station warns citizens of a ‘strange atmospheric phenomena’. Moments after this warning, a lightning bolt hits the player’s car, causing it to crash into a lake below. The player fights for his life against zombies. After fighting through the country side, he manages to get to the small town, but learns that it is overrun as well. However, he is captured by the evil sheriff and is nearly killed when a non-zombified police officer rescues him. The player then fights through the town and ends up at Dr. Franklin’s Asylum, the nexus of the zombie outbreak. After meeting Dr. Franklin and his army of new zombies, called Zorks, the player nearly sacrifices himself to destroys the asylum and Dr. Franklin, who is still in the building when it is destroyed. However, he wakes up in a hospital later and learns that the zombies are still spreading. He goes back to the Asylum and finishes off Dr. Franklin. Another non-zombified police officer offers to fly the player out of the city after Franklin is killed. However, while the player is flying away, the sheriff appears in a helicopter and attempts to kill them. The player kills the sheriff and manages to escape the doomed town.
One twist in the game is that the player is stripped of all their weapons at the start of each chapter, forcing the player to start from scratch. Otherwise, it plays very similar to Half-Life.
They Hunger borrows some of its art from other GoldSrc games, such as Team Fortress Classic and Counter-Strike. However, it also uses original art developed for the mod and art that was included with Half-Life, mostly the indoor textures.

In the first episode, the player takes the role of a troubled writer who has gone to a country retreat to work on his next masterpiece. However, the player soon hears news over the radio of ‘strange atmospheric phenomena’, and his car crashes into a lake after being hit by a lightning bolt. He escapes the lake and arrives at a mortuary chapel from a maze of catacombs. Here, he discovers the zombies attacking the town. He moves on, passing through a swamp and a volcanic rift called Devil’s Rift, gaining weapons and encountering zombified policemen that are still smart enough to handle firearms. He gets to the town by commandeering a train. At the town he manages to reach the radio station seen in the intro, and manages to call the state police for help. The state police tell him to wait for them at the police station. There, he is captured by the undead sheriff Chester Rockwood, and puts him in a prison cell. Trapped, the episode ends with a zombie approaching his cell door to eat him.
They Hunger 2: Rest in Pieces [ edit ]
The protagonist begins the game where the last left off: unarmed and trapped, however just as the zombie is about to enter his cell the player is saved by a police officer with a rocket-equipped truck. Still unarmed, the player is forced to restock his arsenal himself (though it is possible to re-enter the police station and regain several lost weapons).
The player soon after enters the sewers. There he encounters bizarre aquatic creatures and encounters several state police officers who have been zombified after arriving at the town. The player later makes it to the Rockwell water treatment plant, and it becomes apparent that the army has taken notice of the problem and had started sending troops in to take care of the zombies, though their operation is failing.
A major part of this episode is spent exploring the ‘Rivendale Asylum for the Criminally Insane’ operated by the mad Dr. Franklin, creator of the undead horde. Once inside the player meets Alfred, Dr. Franklin’s former assistant, who tells the player that it was he and Dr. Franklin that discovered strange things in the local water supply that bring anyone alive or dead to a state of half-life. He tells the player that Dr. Franklin was trying to figure out how it was causing the zombies but ended up being infected too.
The player then enters Dr. Franklin’s underground laboratory where he witnesses several of the doctor’s horrid experiments, such as dismembered heads being kept alive. Soon the player is forced to fight an army of undead Frankenstein-like monsters brought to life through Franklin’s machine. Afterward Dr. Franklin is chased out of the area by one of his own monsters. The player also encounters reanimated skeletons that can shoot bolts of electricity.
The episode ends with the player attempting to escape the asylum, only to set it aflame. The player is caught in a massive explosion which ends the episode.
They Hunger 3: Rude Awakening [ edit ]
The final episode opens as the player awaken to find himself in Rockwell community hospital. A little exploration reveals that it too had been overrun by zombies before the player woke up. After the player leaves the hospital, he covers several miles of open countryside on foot and arrives at a small farm which has been overrun by undead. Besides the farmers most of the local cattle and other animals have also been infected and prove to be quite a danger. He also passes a Stonehenge-like structure on the way.
Eventually the player returns to the now-destroyed asylum. However the player is again captured and taken back to the countryside at the Stonehenge-like structure. Here the player witnesses Sheriff Rockwood giving a speech to the zombie hordes which is soon broken up when the army attacks. The player escapes and retraces his steps back to the farm train yard, along the way witnessing the fact that the army is clearly overwhelmed by the zombie threat. After boarding a rail car he once again arrives at the asylum. There he meets Deputy Jerry Hoobs, who has a plan to get himself and the player out of the town with a helicopter. However, he can’t open the hangar door, so the player must fight through the asylum, which is now overrun with zombified soldiers, to meet him on the other side. On the way to the hangar, Sheriff Rockwood and Dr. Franklin (who survived the asylum’s explosion and has been rebuilt as a half-zombie, half-machine cyborg) see the player in the asylum and trigger the alarm. The player manages to reach the helicopter and escape with Hoobs before the zombified security could stop him.
The game reaches its climax as the player and the deputy are forced to fight the cyborg Dr. Franklin at the asylum’s train yard. After the doctor’s defeat the player is pursued by Sheriff Rockwood in another helicopter with a mounted mini-gun. The player defeats the sheriff and sends him plummeting toward the lake below before exploding. The game ends with the player and the deputy flying off into the sunset.
Characters [ edit ]
As in most Half-Life games, the player is never seen. He is a male writer, visiting the town to relax and get inspiration for his next book. [1]
Sheriff Chester Rockwood
Rockwood is a slightly overweight man; he wears sunglasses and a 10-gallon hat, and he carries his trusty Magnum pistol with him at all times (although he is never seen using it). He was near his re-election campaign before the zombies attacked. Early on in the game the player learns that Rockwood disregarded the odd reports about zombies as «just hearsay and rumors, likely spread out by his rivals to undermine his position in the upcoming elections.» Rockwood disappeared while investigating a disturbance at the city morgue, presumably leading to his zombification. He works with Dr. Franklin, even in undeath, as he is seen many times through glass and other obstacles talking to the doctor, planning the next stage of the zombie attacks or conversing with his fellow zombies. He dies when the player shoots down his helicopter. His model is a retextured G-Man model.
Franklin is a scientist in biology as well as the administrator of «Rivendale Asylum for the Criminally Insane.» He appears to have had an accident in the past which has caused damage to the right side of his face. He only has one working eye and a smirk in the right side of his mouth. When the player meets Franklin for the first time it is revealed that he has long felt a calling to re-animate the dead. He was friends with Sheriff Rockwood before the Sheriff became a zombie; they still work together. After the explosion at the end of Episode 2, he is rebuilt as a cyborg, with his left eye, right arm and leg all mechanical. He also wields a Hivehand-like weapon in his right arm that he uses against the player during his fight. Franklin’s past — with his attempts to re-animate the dead and subsequent exile from the scientific community — may be a reference to Dr. Herbert West from H. P. Lovecraft’s Herbert West, Re-Animator. His model is a retexture of a Black Mesa scientist model.
Deputy Jerry Hoobs
A Sherrif’s deputy, Hoobs is heard on two tape recorders before appearing in person near the end of the game. He tried to reason with Sheriff Rockwood but failed and barely escaped the police station. He stayed at the hospital for a while before asking people to come with him to escape the city on foot. After he left the hospital, he left another tape recorder at the cattle ranch. This recording said the Pentagon had authorized the Sherman Scorched Earth policy. At the remains of the ruined asylum, the player meets him in person. They must work together to escape Rockwell and stop the zombie horde. His model is a retexture of a Black Mesa Security Officer Barney model.

Согласитесь, что зомби в мире Half-Life не такие уж и страшные. Подумаешь, мертвые люди, которых контролируют, всего-то, какие-то безобидные хеадкрабы. В They Hunger все совершенно не так! Эта модификация о куда более страшном и куда более будоражащим воображение феномене. Этот мод о живых мертвецах!
Все началось с того, что в маленьком графстве Rockwell, после неизвестного аномального атмосферного явления, стали оживать мертвые люди и как это водится по закону жанра, пытаться отведать немного живой плоти.
Главный герой мода – некогда известный писатель, ныне путешествующий по стране, с целью найти хорошее местечко, чтобы дописать свою книгу. Не успев прибыть в пункт назначения, по радио передали о странном явлении, и вскоре в машину героя попадает молния, вследствие чего она оказывается в овраге с водой. Герою приходится самому выбираться и идти искать помощь. Немного погодя ему встречается церковь, пытаясь найти в ней хоть кого-то и попросить телефон, герой натыкается на мертвое тело священника. И вот тут начинается настоящий кошмар, как будто все самые ужасные сны воплотились в реальность.
Дружественных персонажей в моде не много, в основном это мирные жители, которые вам ни чем не помогут, но также попадаются выжившие полицейские, которые с легкостью помогут прорваться через полчища мертвецов.
Главных злодеев в игре несколько – это местный шериф и чокнутый доктор, который возможно приложил руки к происходящему. Герой встречает их на протяжении всей игры, но финальные битвы происходят только в конце мода.
И конечно, по законам жанра, узнав про сложившуюся ситуацию в графстве, с целью предотвращения распространения зомби-вируса, власти послали на зачистку армию. Солдаты такой народ, который сначала стреляет, потом разбирается, поэтому главному герою придется противостоять еще и значительному количеству правительственных войск.
Возможно это из-за того, что They Hunger состоит из трех глав. Изначально каждая глава создавалась отдельной модификацией. И только чуть позже стала распространяться как единый продукт. И вот уже несколько лет ведется разработка четвертой главы на движке Source, под названием Lost Souls.
Для фанатов Half-Life старой школы данный мод стал и до сих пор остается своего рода классикой модификаций для Half-Life. Новому поколению, которое воспитывается на продуктах Source, в частности на Left 4 Dead, данный мод может не понравиться. Но не надо забывать, что модификация вышла в далеком 1999 году, поэтому нет смысла сравнивать ее с Left 4 Dead в принципе.
They Hunger является той самой игрой, у которой есть душа и в которую еще долго будут играть. Всем уважающим себя фанатам первого Half-Life обязательно советую поиграть (если вы еще этого не сделали), а также ценителям хорошего геймплея, для которых не важны новейшие графические навороты.

You are a best-selling author, on a paid vacation to the country to try and help clear the awful case of writer’s block you’ve had recently. Little do you know, in the town of Rockwell, there lives an insatiable hunger.
They Hunger: Rockwell aims to be a total remake of Neil Manke and Black Widow Games’ classic Half-Life mod They Hunger on Valve’s Source engine. Much like Black Mesa before it, this mod recreates and reinvents the environments of They Hunger, bringing the story to a generation that may have missed out on the original.
Please note that currently, everything shown is part of a preliminary build, meaning it is very early in development and hasn’t received much polish. However, with this project, I wanted to share with the community even the earliest of my progress, so I could accumulate feedback and opinions on how to better the work.
The future of They Hunger: Rockwell
Well guys, as you may have guessed, this project has come to a permanent halt. Rockwell has seen no progress in a while, due to many reasons. But I view this as a good thing, because honestly, trying to develop an entire remake of this scale all on my own is not an easy task.
But all is not lost! As some of you may know, romadoma and his team have been working on a remake, entitled They Hunger Again, for about a year now, only recently debuting their progress. I’ve been in talks with romadoma, and he’s invited me to work as a secondary map creation artist on their project! If you had any interest whatsoever in the work I was doing here, I recommend you check out They Hunger Again!
I also currently have a personal project in the works, but that probably won’t be discussed for a while. All I can say is, if you’re a fan of dinosaurs and/or infamously bad games, stay tuned!

If you’ve donated to the mod at any time, you should automatically receive the in-game bonus features in the Steam version of Sven Co-op. If you don’t see them after trying on a couple of different servers, please send me your Steam ID (e.g. STEAM_0:1:23456) together with the real name and e-mail address you used when donating so we can identify the donation.
After installing the game, Sven Co-op’s SDK and Dedicated Server will be available under Tools in your Steam Library (use the dropdown at the right of the Search box). For information on how to set up your own dedicated server, check the «Running a Server» section of the game manual. You will need to forward port 27015 (TCP/UDP) to run any server.
To disable Survival Mode, add the following line to your server.cfg and/or listenserver.cfg file: as_command survival_enabled 0

Many thanks for this! But has anyone played it all the way through successfully? I haven’t played TH in a while, and decided to load it up in Steam using this fix. However, I can’t get past they53 in Part 3. I’ve opened the hatch to exit, got in the helicopter and it’s just about to reach the surface when I die. I’ve tried moving to different parts of the chopper, crouching, etc., but nothing works. It’s as though I’ve been crushed by something.
I can’t remember this being a problem before, so I wondered if there was something in this Steam fix that wasn’t quite right. Anyone else had a problem here?

«They Hunger: The Pre-Sequel» (ex. «Rockwell Guard») takes part between the 2nd and the 3rd parts of the original trilogy. It starts meanwhile the fire in Rivendale Asylum and shows events till the end of the first night of the original story.
The mod is about a soldier which squad was one of the first who landed on the country side of Rockwell town to fight zombies. The squad has been destroyed and the main character was the only one who stayed alive. The only mission now is to outlast this nightmare. Trying to reach other survived squads he discovers what’s happened in Rockwell. It seems he has to try to stop those who’s guilty all this mess.

You can try porting a different sprite from any half-life mod, Or find one on fpsbanana, The Makers of this pack never had any intention of putting crosshairs in the mod, For realistic purposes,

But its not realistic. in real life you can aim down the sights of a weapon, but you can’t in this mod. So it makes no sense what so ever. Actually in real life you would never fire a gun from the hip except in rare instances. Why didn’t this mod just disable crosshair by default, instead of completely removing it from the game? Give people the choice. Anyone know how to fix this?
um. realism ruins the point of a ‘game’ if you want realism join the army, bout as real as it gets. no crosshairs and all the iron sighting you can do all day.
Yes but you can actually aim in real life, if you remove crosshairs then there is no way to aim in the mod except guessing where the center of the screen is.

Is there anyway to replace the Thompson with a modern gun and the zombie baby with a headcrab? I like the pack a lot other then those two things.
In case you didn’t know, They Hunger is set in the 1950’s,
And yes the tommy gun was still in use back then, So a modern weapon would not exactly fit into the setting,
As for the zombie baby, It pays to look at the Description a little harder.
Actually it is debated whether or not they hunger took place in the 50s. For one the G36 wasn’t made ’til the 80s. Not to mention the modern looking helicopters. Also for this addon it should be noted that one of the weapons is a SAW machine which wasn’t even in development until the late 60s. And really just about all the new models are modern except for the Thompson and the grease gun. And the grease gun can be easily justified as an antique. But when I see moderd looking soldiers wielding tommy guns it just looks rediculous. And where exactly in the description does it say that the headcrab is replaced with a zombie baby? Everything except the baby model is a massive increase in quality and it’s dissapionting to see the IMO cool headcrabs replaced by the IMO annoying babies.

A. That addon/mod looks freaking sweet. Thanks a ton for finding it. B. Pretty sure it was an M60 but I might have been wrong. C. The soldiers in the mod look nothing like vietnam soldiers. At least not to me. D. There was an alterative skin for the baby/headcrab? The closest I saw was headcrab baby mistake. E. I apologise if I came across as a «whiner» as I did not mean to. Loved the pack for the most part(especially the fast zombies and no crosshair) and just was looking to find a way to make it even better.
(Ugh edit button timed out) yeah the machine gun in the addon is a SAW no doubt about it. The Vietnam soldier wore plain green camo as opposed to the mixed color camo modern day soldiers and the ones in the mod wear. But in all honesty They Hunger is such an Anachronism Stew it’s impossible to pin down exactly when it takes place. So I guess it akes place in whatever era you want it too.
This crashes my They Hunger on Startup 🙁
I don’t know why but when I try to play this mod I have no crosshairs. I can’t aim, so this pack makes the game completely unplayable.

Great work! However, I only have one problem after installing this pack. My crosshair disappeared. Any idea what could that be?
I figured it out. Just Delete all the weapons txt files in the sprites folder such as «weapon_crossbow.txt». I also recommend replacing the cbar_hitbod1.wav sound file with something less annoying. My only other issue with the mod is that a head shot with a colt doesn’t kill a zombie.. it takes 3 headshots. If the mod is trying to be realistic then why is it so unrealistic?

it works except it changed the demon fish into a shark at first and now it’s like a half man half squid thing
The dynamite is leagues ahead of Hunger’s default model, the RPG 7 though unused and from HOE:NAPALM is regardless one of the better rpg’s out there, the medkit syringe definitely fits more with the old times, the grease gun isn’t half bad, the barnacle’s green colour fits in nicely with the forest areas, the pistol’s chrome was done rather well and I will make use of player models in deathmatch scenarios.
The Zork looks nothing like patch work but rather something made of charcoal with red eyes and a tube running through the arm, The zombies are a modification of other models; albeit hideous formations in terms of the zombies and the models themselves, the large bullsquid is a direct rip from HOE:NAPALM re sized, and the regular bullsquid is simply a human with twisted legs.
The zombie bull and chicken simply have new eyeballs, The Tommy Gun has that annoying tradition of replacing launched grenades with hand thrown ones ( otherwise good model ), zombie grunts don’t give off the impression of falling apart, some of the weapon models that have been replaced are otherwise not encountered in the Hunger mod, and the term Ultra Definition sounds stupid in general.
( The good, the bad and the ugly. Get it? 😛 )
No matter how stupid the shotgun may be it is better than hunger default, and the zombies have red eyes. Must be a horror thing.

Этот патч можно скачать с сайта компании Sierra. Возможно, при чтении этого солюшена некоторые места покажутся вам чересчур хорошо объяснёнными, а некоторые – совсем плохо. Обязательно напишите об этом мне (адрес в конце солюшена), ведь критика – это всегда хорошо, особенно. Когда она имеет под собой почву :). Я постарался сделать всё, чтобы пройти этот действительно классный мод вам было легче. На сколько хорошо у меня это вышло – судить Вам.
Друзья: Друзей тут у вас гораздо меньше, чем врагов. 1 – Мирные жители. Они абсолютно ничем вам не помогут. 2 – Вооружённый полицейский. Встретите его в самом начале эпизода 2. Он вам ещё очень пригодится, прикрывая вас и отстреливая зомби. 3 – Альфред, ассистент Сумасшедшего Доктора. They Hunger is a survival-horror modification for the first-person shooter game Half-Life developed by Black Widow Games, consisting of three episodes and initially released in 1999, with the second and third entries being released in 2000 and 2001 respectively. It was one of the first fan-made Half-Life mods ever made, being distributed by the PC Gamer magazine and also ported to the Sega Dreamcast, being a well-known and well-regarded mod within the Half-Life mod community to this day.
The plot revolves around an unnamed writer in 1950’s America traveling to the countryside in order to take a vacation and seek inspiration for his next work. After crashing his car due to a mysterious thunderstorm, he gets stranded in a small town overran with zombies, having to survive and find a way to escape.

The Beretta 92FS Inox appears as the game’s 9mm pistol; it should be noted that it is merely a 92FS Inox texture on Half-Life’s Glock 17 model, sharing its shape, capacity and other stats (interestingly enough, the Beretta 92FS would appear in Half-Life through the HD pack released in 2005). The player can attach a suppressor on the gun to increase accuracy or detach it to increase rate of fire.
Like a lot of the weapons featured in the game, it is anachronistic for its 1950’s setting since the Beretta 92 wouldn’t be available until the 1970’s, and the 92FS Inox until the 1990’s.

I can’t believe that this game was actually made. It’s more funny than scary, I mean It’s Not funny, It’s just. Bad. You can’t like, take your Beginner Skills and make a Game you wanted.
This is genuinely one of the worst comments I have seen in a long time. Saying that you can’t make the game you want to make when you’re a beginner is like saying that you shouldn’t speak the language you’re learning. People making a bad game isn’t gonna prevent people from making a better version.

I see people are still writing comments on this mod, so I guess it’s time to address a few things. Let me make it clear from the outset, Roman is not a bad guy, I still have respect for him and what he wanted to do.
Hi, I’m Ian, one of the guys who worked on this mod. I spent quite a bit of time on it, actually, working to remake the intro map to as close to perfection as I could. Unfortunately, during the entirety of the dev process, there was a huge lack of communication between myself and Roman, as I’m sure my pal GRENADE_EXPERT (who was working on the final Rockwell Town map) will attest. Some things were assumed by myself that ended up not happening, for example I assumed we’d ‘finish’ the mod and then take a long while to hash out any problems or bugs or just plain unfinished bits and polish them up nicely to completion. Roman, however, was just plain exhausted and run-down by all the work he’d already put in, and was satisfied to release what we had in what was wrongly called a ‘beta build’. I was unhappy with this, and I said as much, deciding to officially leave the project after the release.
The reception was definitely disappointing, although not undeservedly. Upon actually playing the game myself, several months after the fact, I was not only shocked at the low quality and cut corners, but also at the fact that my recreated map had gone seemingly unused in favor of a version that, apparently, Roman himself had made. This was at least eight months of work, of my life, tossed aside and unused. As I said, I hold no ill will towards Roman, and this isn’t a call to abuse him. I hold the belief that he was just so tired that he decided to use what he’d made instead of fixing my work up to his standards, which is sad but understandable.
My biggest regret in this project is the fact that I left working on my own version (which is, I believe, still on Moddb under the title They Hunger: Rockwell) to work on something that left so many people wanting more.
In conclusion, I want to apologize to those we disappointed, and I wish you all all the best. Here’s hoping someone more capable takes up the task that we left unfinished.
Unfortunately, I’m now at a point in my life where I can’t devote as much time to modding as I’d like to, so Rockwell likely will remain on indefinite hiatus. Who knows, though, I could end up getting inspired to finish it one day!

Все слышали о моде they hunger,который состоит из трёх частей.ну и модели там не очень качественные,но играть можно. геймплэй и сюжет мода очень впечатлил))). в моде мы играем за писателя(имя которого некому неизвестно) начинается всё с того что на радиостанции сообщают о аномальных погодных явлениях плюс по городку начали разгуливать мертвяки, причина их появления эксприменты др.франклина(именно с ним нужно рассправится в 3й части) естественно это слушали все(а может и нет)и когда гробовщик ехал на своём катафалге,возле реки по его машине ударила молния(был сильный дождь) и недочёт этого дождя в том что вода льётся не с неба а наоборот небо высасывает воду из земли

Остаётся надеяться, что мод, как и БМС, сильно задерживается в своей разработке, но если по БМС хоть какие-то новости и движения есть, то этот мод. Скорее всего, он мёртв.

Это был мой первый и единственный мод для ХЛ1, в который я играл.. В далёёёёком ветхобаянном эдак 2004 или 2005 году. Он был на сборнике с ХЛ1, там ещё какие то другие моды были, помню только некую Opera и всё.

Run the installer (TheyHunger3.exe) then copy the contents of „patch” folder into mod’s installation directory.

I know readers like it when I have the first review up but I am just so busy at the moment. I have a few days off in a week and will update reviews then.
Not played They Hunger before, how do I get out of the room the the radio and a trap-door looking thing? I feel i’ve hit and pressed ‘e’ on anything in the room
At the very start? You go back outside the way you came in. I’d strongly recommend playing the original They Hunger before this, mainly because it’s changed a number of things for the worse.

I also have trouble making progress. Got the crowbar and pistol, killed the zombies. There are really annoying invisible walls.
Do you mean skybox or just straight up an invisible wall?
I wasn’t a very big fan of this.
In the initial release the zombies were extremely difficult to kill and the weapon kick was insane. Add to that the lack of a suit and flashlight, and the multiple unnecessary changes to the levels from the original and it felt very frustrating to play. A lot of the puzzles were pointless (especially the water level one at the start after you leave the church, you can literally walk up the slope and the invisible wall is extremely obvious) and some areas were left out entirely.
It also ends around the middle of the original mod. You don’t even get to go to the dam.
It looks pretty good visually, and I think it would have been amazing if they didn’t spend so much effort on changing things for no good reason. They’ve listened to feedback and changed things based on that though, which is great.
Also those menu options, wow.
To be honest I’m surprised this mod is already released. I first heard about it like month ago. There is almost no media on moddb. Strange for something that big.
First off, I just want to say that it is nice to see a Source version of They Hunger finally get released. Over the years a number of these mods have popped up, only to get canned somewhere down the line. Hell, even Black Widow Games themselves went silent while working on their Source game They Hunger: Lost Souls. Shame… 🙁
Having said that, as much as I truly, desperately wanted to like this… I didn’t.
The maps are extremely condensed compared to their original GoldSource counterparts. This is a bit of a surprise seeing as it is built in a newer, more advanced engine, but every single area that wasn’t just cut entirely, was massively down scaled. Not only that, but the levels are ridiculously easy to escape using physics props. Phillip is going to have a field day with this one! 😛
Not only that, but the level changes feel very amateur, often fading out at the end of the map and plonking the player into a seemingly similar area at the start of the next.
The sound design is ok, in that it’s mostly just lifted from They Hunger, but the narration at the beginning… Yikes. This wasn’t a feature in the original and it just sounds ridiculous as it is. Also, towards the end there is a section where a TV would play rave music… which was just ridiculous even if it was meant as an easter egg.
As for the gameplay, it’s not great. One thing They Hunger left alone was Half-Life’s gameplay, meaning it was more of a horror theme than actual horror. The gameplay was still very arcadey and the weapons performed as you would expect. In They Hunger Again, everything has been slowed down. You can’t sprint for one thing, and the crowbar has a weird delay before you can swing it a again. The guns are completely unreliable. They are slow, underpowered and massively inaccurate. I only ever used them against the cops as a last resort, using the crowbar (with it’s clunky delay) for everything else. Movement feels awkward as well. Some of the maps are littered with Physics props like rocks and planks, that you keep getting caught up on.
And then it ends, halfway through the train sequence. The train itself is painfully slow compared to the original and after a while the mod just fades out with a “to be continued…” message.
If they do intend to recreate the whole series then I wish them look, but they haven’t really convinced me with this sub par quality, terribly short release, which is really no more than a demo.
Because I’m not that familiar with They Hunger, are you saying that the original developers left and a group of fans decided to “remake” their work in a completely inferior way without their permission?
A They Hunger remake? This looks promising, but based on what the reviewers say, it can’t be that good.
No, I just think the site is busy at the moment. Remember, I don’t have the resources ModDB has. The torrent should be faster.
This mod is sooo bad…
It’s the worse case scenario of a remake. Made and published too fast by inexperienced modders, without care of anything. Not beta tested at all. They used Source but they didn’t take advantage of it. They made some areas even worse looking than in original. For example the church is really ugly, smaller, without some areas (bell tower). Just imagine what they could have done with Source powers.
Ok, I understand they wanted narrator in the intro, but pls, if english is not your native language don’t do this. It sounds more funny than creepy. I wouldn’t dare to make any voice acting myself. And why is this train so slow? 😉
What’s wrong with level transitions? When you enter the gate in canals (there is no padlock btw, another drawback to original) you got fade to black and you are teleported to another place. I even broke that at first, game faded to black but level didn’t change. Almost all the rest transitions take place in the same cave corridor. On the last map transition I just had black wall behind me. There are also broken ladders that you can’t easly detach.
Water pump puzzle – ridiculous. There is that water pump you have to use to rise water level. The pump valve is on top of it along with item crate. But you can’t acces the top of the pump! Well you can (by the little tree) but there is no textures on top (so it’s more like breaking the map). You can’t even jump on a little pipe right beside it. You need to turn the valve from the bottom. But then, why they put it on top at first place? It’s just bad made puzzle.
Fighting is also terrible, there are literally zombies spawned right behind you, from thin air:
And further is even worse. When you first meet police guys, there is this fence opening and blue barrel. This is so wrong for many reasons. Zombies attack you from both sides, and that barrel can block your way through the fance, you can’t grab anything in this mod, so you are in really bad posistion here.
Canyon with water is one of the best looking parts of the mod. But it’s so bad gameplay wise. You are fighting zombies in water. Whatever the reason I got launched up in the air everytime I wanted to hit a zombie, and I’m slower in water, and I just escaped from little cave that I was crawling in it. It’s just unplayable. Nobody tested this.
Another example is vulcan area. You enter an area by narrow passage and you are instantly attacked by 2 policemen, 1 zombie, a headcrab and second zombie from behind (spawned from thin air again). You can’t escape and they hit you hard. On top of this. Far ahead there is this third police guy in the ledge above also shooting at you, almost invisible because of his dark color on even darker background. I had to switch to godmode to pass this. And there is this jumping on hot air right after. I wasn’t able to perfmorm this, there is almost no control once you are in air. And those ledges are so tiny and made from dispacements, you can slip to your death any moment.
Train part is slow and boring, besides opening the gate you have no need to stop the train at all. There are like 3 areas to check, but why would I if train is safer? Also don’t try to jump in it because you won’t be able to fully return to the train’s cabin.
And the most funny thing:
Technical stuff
This mod has just 9 maps but weights over 2,5 GB. Why? Because those guys “can’t into” textures 😉 They have tens of 2048×2048 textures 16mb each. There is even 65mb single texture of grass! Source can’t even handle properly something bigger than 1024px, and with so basic brushwork this mod has it just look bad. Original They Hunger looks better because it was at least consistent. Here you have this little radio with like 4k res texture standing on a table made from 4 brushes:
Also minor issue – why no umbrella? It’s iconic and easy to do.
Those guys should really go back to basics and fix this mod. Well, they should remade it from scratch because there is too many basic things made wrong. Really, I don’t recommend this at all.

«They Hunger: The Pre-Sequel» (ex. «Rockwell Guard») takes part between the 2nd and the 3rd parts of the original trilogy. It starts meanwhile the fire in Rivendale Asylum and shows events till the end of the first night of the original story.
The mod is about a soldier which squad was one of the first who landed on the country side of Rockwell town to fight zombies. The squad has been destroyed and the main character was the only one who stayed alive. The only mission now is to outlast this nightmare. Trying to reach other survived squads he discovers what’s happened in Rockwell. It seems he has to try to stop those who’s guilty all this mess.

Итак, когда в машину ударит молния, вы преспокойно свалитесь в воду. Как только получите управление – сразу выныривайте и глотните воздуха. Затем плывите к дальнему концу этого водоёма, нырните и найдите подводный тоннель. Проплыв его до конца – вылезайте из воды. Сейчас Вы в водонапорной станции. Поднимитесь по лестнице и заходите в правую дверь (левая пока заперта). Далее – по коридору, пока не увидите перед собой кирпичную кладку, дальше – по змееобразному коридору, поднимитесь по маленькой лесенке и выходите на улицу через дверь с вырезанным крестом. Бегите по тропинке в тоннель, затем через мост, снова в тоннель, и, наконец, выйдете к часовне.
Идите обратно в тоннель, там ещё несколько зомби, оттуда – к мосту.
Тем временем два-три зомби вылезут из воды, прибейте их. Идите по тропинке дальше, к кладбищу. Та за одним из деревьев есть проход, идите туда и сломайте одну из кирпичных кладок на ваш выбор. Вторую сломает зомби, что за ней. Разломайте ящик, возьмите аптечку, и ползите дальше. Каменная полка не выдержит и обвалится, если вы упали вниз, то забирайтесь сюда снова, а если нет, то аккуратно перепрыгните на уступ, а затем на верхнюю часть арки тоннеля, дальше – на обломок мостика, далее – по тоннелю, по знакомому змеевидному коридору (там теперь много мертвяков, так что приготовьтесь отбиваться).
В конце концов, вы должны прийти туда, где вынырнули из воды. Сбейте замок на второй двери, пройдите по железному мосту, который обломится, и вы упадёте вниз.
Разбейте ящики и деревянную бочку, в них аптечка и патроны. Затем поверните вентиль на стене, и уровень воды начнёт подниматься. Так вы сможете добраться до двери наверху, заходите в неё, затем – по тёмному коридору до комнаты, где на стене мигает красная лампочка.
За углом сидят зомби и хедкраб. Убейте. Теперь ломайте железную решётку на полу, там, где трубы. Ныряйте в воду, там включите фонарь, быстро выбивайте прутья решетки, у которой один из прутьев кривой. Плывите по подводному тоннелю, пока не вынырните на воздух. Отдышавшись, плывите к дальнему концу водоёма (там ещё есть уступ, на который залезть можно) там под водой есть ещё один тоннель, проплывайте его весь. Там, куда вы выплывете, много зомби, перебейте их всех и вылезайте на сушу. Снова идите в коридор в скале. По коридору – до тех пор, пока не увидите справа в стене деревянную дверь. Подождите, пока её изнутри выломает зомби и убейте его.
За дверью лежит мёртвый полицейский, а рядом – ящик со снайперкой и немного патронов. Однако, сейчас туда не подойти – вас током убьёт. Идите дальше по коридору, проходите комнату с большой печью и кучей угля на полу. Идите дальше, пока не увидите винтовую лестницу, загляните за неё и увидите рубильник. Поверните его (нажать кнопку ИСПОЛЬЗОВАНИЕ по умолчанию – английское «Е»). Теперь электричество выключено, и можно вернуться и забрать снайперку. Потом снова направляйтесь к винтовой лестнице и поднимайтесь по ней.
Разбейте ящики и деревянную бочку и возьмите всё, что в них находится, далее – поднимайтесь по лестнице и идите в коридор, который перед вами, дальше – направо и до конца коридора. Вы в комнате с большими окнами, около одного из них стоит человек. Он говорит, что слышит звук приближающейся машины. Быстро отбегайте от окна, машина пробьёт стену дома, задавит человека и взорвётся. Уходите из этой комнаты, идите по коридору до конца и заходите в комнату с рукомойником и унитазом. Убейте хедкрабов, запрыгивайте на рукомойник, затем на бачок унитаза, затем – разбивайте окно и прыгайте вниз. Около стены стоит сундук, в котором лежит Дробовик. Можете его прямо тут и опробовать на зомби. Сбивайте замок на двери, перебейте всех зомби и идите в автомобилю с горящими фарами. На стене дома есть водосточная труба – залезайте по ней на крышу, там лежит ещё один дробовик.
Спускайтесь вниз и идите в тоннель, пройдя по нему, вы попадёте на развилку.
В начале советую сходить к перевёрнутой машине и забрать там патроны для дробовика. Теперь направляйтесь к полицейской машине, сломайте оторванную дверь и возьмите аптечку. Идём дальше.
В одном месте там есть разлом в скале – проплывайте в него, вы услышите звук вертолета. Здесь очень опасный момент: доставайте снайперку и убейте полицейского на плоту и пулемётчика в вертолёте. В кабине вертолёта есть ещё один вооружённый зомби, а за вертолётом стоит ещё один.
Теперь направляйтесь в проход между скалами, пока не выйдете к огромному разлому земной коры, называющемуся “Devil’s rift”, идите по деревянным мосткам, пока не дойдёте до пещеры. Убейте там всех и заберите амуницию, затем возвращайтесь на мостки и прыгайте вниз по выступам на скале, рекомендую сохраняться перед каждым прыжком.
Теперь – заходите в фонтан пара и прыгайте. Вас подкинет высоко вверх, где вам надо приземлиться на уступ с минимальными потерями здоровья. Тут ещё двое зомби. Идите вверх, пока не заберётесь на самую вершину этого места. Там вы увидите каменный островок, на котором валяется труп полицейского. Прыгайте туда, возьмите динамит, патроны и аптечку, теперь прыгайте обратно и идите в узкий проход в скале.
Осторожно ползите по нему, когда увидите выход – тут же остановитесь, доставайте снайперку и убивайте мента-зомби вдалеке. Идите дальше.
За одним из деревьев есть дыра – лезьте туда (там хедкраб сидит), когда пройдёте этот лаз до конца – окажетесь на берегу озерца, через которое перекинут естественный мост. Убейте зомби и полицейского на противоположном берегу и идите через мост. С моста слезайте направо. Теперь всё нужно делать максимально быстро и точно. Доставайте снайперку (хорошо, если у вас есть 6-7 или больше патронов). Теперь ныряйте в озеро, учтите, там живёт акула, ищите на глубине большую подводную пещеру, и плывите в неё. Когда вынырнете – посмотрите налево – там берег с железнодорожным мостом. Берег этот просто кишит ментами. Там их аж 6 штук: трое на видимом вам сейчас берегу, двое – на лодке в озере и один – да углом, вам его не видно. Перебейте всех из снайперки. Это удобно делать с большого расстояния, когда они вас не видят.
Когда дрезина упадёт с рельсов – залезайте в паровоз (там зомби в кабине), жмите «использование» и ставьте паровоз на полный ход. Жмите «использование» ещё раз и прыгайте из кабины на ходу. Паровоз поедет дальше, а вы просто бегите сзади за ним и наслаждайтесь зрелищем разлетающихся вдребезги мертвяков, поджидавших вас в тоннеле. Паровоз остановится перед стрелкой, надо её перевести.
За каменными уступами справа и слева сидят по двое ментов. Убейте их. Идите к домику, дверь изнутри сломает зомби, заберите аптечку, патроны к снайперке. Переводите стрелку, снова запускайте паровоз, снова спрыгивайте и бегите за ним. Паровоз снова остановится, на этот раз дорога перекрыта шлагбаумом. Слева за углом и около паровоза сидят менты, справа в воздухе висит вертолёт с пулёмётчиком. Ментов можно довольно легко перебить (лучше пока не тратьте снайперские патроны, они вам ещё очень пригодятся). Вертолёт можно обезвредить двумя способами:
1 – достаём снайперку, выскакиваем из-за угла и снимаем зомби-пулемётчика
Пока вы изображали Ихтиандра, на плотину сбежалась целая куча нечисти: двое ментов и несколько зомби. Перебейте всех и залезайте в паровоз. Проделайте с ним то же самое, что и два раза перед этим. Паровоз поедет дальше, бегите за ним и собирайте боеприпасы. В одном месте тоннеля паровоз может сам остановиться (непонятно почему). Залезайте в него и заводите снова, затем спрыгивайте. В конце тоннеля будет место, где с потолка будут сыпаться хедкрабы, всего их упадет 7 или 8 штук. Перебейте их.
Когда выйдете из тоннеля, перед вами будет дом, слева от него стоят бочки. Постреляйте по ним из автомата и они взорвутся, убив стоящего на них полицейского. Справа от выхода из тоннеля наверху есть каменный уступ, на нём стоят двое полицейских, ещё двое выбегут на крышу дома, а ещё один выбьет окно справа наверху. Когда убьёте всех – поднимайтесь на тот уступ, где были полицейские. Там аптечка, два пистолета и рожок к автомату. Теперь двигайте ящик к окну, бейте стекло и лезьте внутрь. Пройдите дальше, сломайте ещё один ящик, а затем и вентиляционную решётку за ним, пролезайте в следующую комнату. Дождитесь, пока зомби выбьет прутья решётки, убейте его и залезайте в окошко. Перед вами комната с печью. Тут обитают трое зомби и трое хедкрабов. Когда все умрут – разбейте все ящики и соберите полезные вещички, затем – идите в проход в стене, в следующей комнате разбейте ящики и возьмите патроны к дробовику.
Теперь – в ещё один проход, когда подниметесь по лестнице, перед вами будет коридор, в конце которого стоят зомби. Киньте им динамит.
Теперь достаньте дробовик, дозарядите его до полной обоймы. Вам нужно перепрыгнуть через весь коридор, т.к. пол в нём проваливается, и вы падаете в подвал, кишащий мертвяками. Если удалось перепрыгнуть – открывайте дверь и прибейте полицейского за нею, а если нет, то перестреляйте зомби, возьмите аптечку в ящике рядом с винными бочками. Теперь идите к маленькому решётчатому окошку. Разломайте часть треснувшей стены, выбейте решётку и вылезайте на волю. Идите налево к домику с неоновой надписью “BMRF Radio” над входом. Под столом в углу есть аптечка. Свяжитесь по рации с полицией, поговорите. Вам посоветуют идти к ближайшему полицейскому участку. Что ж, мы так и сделаем… выбора-то всё равно нет.
Сломайте перекошенную дверь и заходите внутрь. Тут зомби, а в ящике на полке – патроны к дробовику. Выходите из домика, заходите в часовню (там крест на крыше). В часовне перебейте всех зомби, не заходя в большой зал, когда все умрут – осторожно вползайте в зал, там наверху притаился полицейский. Идите поверху и заходите в коридор, в конце которого висит картина. Из-за неё выпрыгнет хедкраб, убив его, проходите дальше, выбейте окно, а затем – приготовьте снайперку. Осторожно высовываясь из окна, убейте двух ментов-зомби на крыше дома справа, затем хедкраба внизу, у бочек, спрыгнув вниз, убейте ещё одного полицая на козырьке дома.
Подходите к машине, сломайте отвалившуюся дверцу, лезьте внутрь и ставьте машину на скорость, а сами выпрыгивайте на ходу. Будьте осторожны! Если выпрыгнете в том месте, где машина поворачивает, то рискуете быть раздавленными. Машина, словно на автопилоте поедет по тоннелю, передавит всех ментов-зомби (они там просто кишат), а затем врежется в бензоколонку и та разлетится вдребезги, машина поедет дальше и пробьёт дыру в стене станции техобслуживания.
Доставайте снайперку и осторожно выглядывайте из-за угла. На крыше дома – магазина стоит двое ментов. Один смотрит в вашу сторону, другой – в противоположную. Убейте обоих. Если нужна аптечка – заходите в кассу бензоколонки (на её крыше менты стояли), там под столом и лежит аптечка. Теперь идите через дырку, где стоит машина. Можете разбить доски на полу, там в яме сидит хедкраб, и лежит Кольт. В углу этой комнаты стоит бочка, из которой вытекла лужа масла, стена там треснутая. Выламывайте стену (крепкий зонтик однако у вас) и проходите в дыру. Справа за углом стоит мертвяк, убейте.
Теперь лезьте по водосточной трубе на крышу. Там хедкраб и аптечка. Спускайтесь вниз, и идите по коридору. Когда дойдёте до конца – окажетесь на заднем дворе полицейского участка. Тут двое ментов и несколько зомби. Когда всех убьёте – заходите в участок, там подойдите к зарешёченному окошку и выстрелите в оранжево-жёлтый переключатель. Послышится звук зуммера, теперь заходите в эту комнату (переключатель открыл в неё дверь), там пригнитесь и увидите ещё один такой же переключатель, выстрелите и в него, это откроет дверь, что напротив входной. Идите в неё, поднимайтесь по лестнице. Вдруг свет внезапно гаснет, и спустя несколько секунд Вас кто-то сильно ударит по голове…
Очнётесь на столе, перед вами предстанет Шериф Роквуд, один из главных злодеев в игре. Он скажет что-то про то, что было самоубийством лезть сюда. Ничего, это мы ещё посмотрим!

The unfinished build’s of They Hunger: Lost Soul’s. Important information down below.
They Hunger: Lost Souls was the Source Engine sequel to the original They Hunger trilogy, developed by BlackWidowGames. It was in development from early 2005 to atleast 2009, if not later. For unknown reasons, it was never officially released.
These 2 builds are not fully representative of all the work made for the project. For example: story, dialogue, and characters are non-existent as none of it was implemented yet. Many maps in the campaign were also purposefully removed before the builds were sent to the developer who worked on them.
In the 2008/04/02 build there is an error in which all particle effects (for example, fire) do not display at their proper locations. This is unfixable without modifying the source code, which is not currently possible.
NOTE: To fix some other graphical bugs in the 2008/04/02 build, run the game with the launch command «-dxlevel 80»
With all of that in mind, hopefully these builds have some historical interest for those out there who have wondered for all these years where They Hunger: Lost Souls went.
Also contained in this file (below the installation instructions) is a small guide to the game’s console commands and spawnable entities.
NOTE: To play these builds, you need atleast 3 GB of free space AND the following Steam games/tools installed: — Source SDK Base 2006 — Source SDK Base 2007 — Counter-Strike: Source
The included Readme with this file includes installation instructions as well as entity names to fiddle with if you so desire as well as additional information.
This is the official end of the line for They Hunger: Lost Soul’s, and speaking as someone who joyfully anticipated this release 10 years ago, I hope these builds brings some closure to They Hunger fans everywhere.

What I want with this addon is to make an improvement to the models of this mod that we all love so much. Since while some models are very original, others have many defects in texture, modeling, or are totally recycled from HL1.
Well, as the title says, this is a «recreation / remake» of the They Hunger models.

A version uses ZikShadow Remod Version, so it has High Definition-Ish models, and also A new music from Another Gearbox game, Borderlands 1&2 (Mostly Borderlands 2) because the soundtrack has this soundtrack that somewhat fits the theme of the Undead Sheriff:
Might not A brilliant choice to choose borderlands OST for They Hunger, Thats the best choice I’ve got. It Uses Cry of Fear hands, it is the most comfortable hands to animate with, and most of the weapons are from They Hunger Remod themselves. I don’t know who made Kelly the Skeleton model, I really don’t know, I’ve got it from friend of mine Josesimonapp15, he helped me on finding A good content for this pack.

A HD pack for the classic mod, They Hunger! This originally was a personal project (since there is already a HD pack released), but figured to release it in case of fire. Hope you all enjoy!

It’s the worse case scenario of a remake. Made and published too fast by inexperienced modders, without care of anything. Not beta tested at all. They used Source but they didn’t take advantage of it. They made some areas even worse looking than in original. For example the church is really ugly, smaller, without some areas (bell tower). Just imagine what they could have done with Source powers.
Ok, I understand they wanted narrator in the intro, but pls, if english is not your native language don’t do this. It sounds more funny than creepy. I wouldn’t dare to make any voice acting myself for example. And why is this train so slow? 😉
What’s wrong with level transitions? When you enter the gate in canals (there is no padlock btw, another drawback to original) you got fade to black and you are teleported to another place. I even broke that at first, game faded to black but level didn’t change. Almost all the rest transitions take place in the same cave corridor. On the last map transition I just had black wall behind me. There are also broken ladders that you can’t easly detach.
Fighting is also terrible, there are literally zombies spawned right behind you, from thin air:
And further is even worse. When you first meet police guys, there is this fence opening and blue barrel. This is so wrong for many reasons. Zombies attack you from both sides, and that barrel can block your way through the fance, you can’t grab anything in this mod, so you are in really bad posistion here.
Canyon with water is one of the best looking parts of the mod. But it’s so bad gameplay wise. You are fighting zombies in water. Whatever the reason I got launched up in the air everytime I wanted to hit a zombie, and I’m slower in water, and I just escaped from little cave that I was crawling in it. It’s just unplayable. Nobody tested this.
Another example is vulcan area. You enter an area by narrow passage and you are instantly attacked by 2 policemen, 1 zombie, a headcrab and second zombie from behind (spawned from thin air again). You can’t escape and they hit you hard. On top of this. Far ahead there is this third police guy in the ledge above also shooting at you, almost invisible because of his dark color on even darker background. I had to switch to godmode to pass this. And there is this jumping on hot air right after. I wasn’t able to perfmorm this, there is almost no control once you are in air. And those ledges are so tiny and made from dispacements, you can slip to your death any moment.
Train part is slow and boring, besides opening the gate you have no need to stop the train at all. There are like 3 areas to check, but why would I if train is safer? Also don’t try to jump in it because you won’t be able to fully return to the train’s cabin.
And the most funny thing:
This mod has just 9 maps but weights over 2,5 GB. Why? Because those guys «can’t into» textures 😉 They have tens of 2048×2048 textures 16mb each. There is even 65mb single texture of grass! Source can’t even handle properly something bigger than 1024px, and with so basic brushwork this mod has it just look bad. Original They Hunger looks better because it was at least consistent. Here you have this little radio with like 4k res texture standing on a table made from 4 brushes:
Dear authors, you should really go back to basics and fix this mod. Well, you should remade it from scratch.

It’s understood that this is a small team, but still, this mod really doesn’t take into account what made They Hunger so great. Although, I’ll give credit where its due. Many places seen so far are nice looking, with good lighting, and at the very beginning of the game, despite the awful voice acting that shouldn’t be there, I was genuinely eager to see familiar environments looking for detailed and creepier especially the catacombs, which I think is the best looking part of the game, thanks in some part to the lighting, but as the levels diverged more from the original, the lack of quality became apparent, especially with the church. Another thing I dearly miss was the distinct colorful lighting. The lighting when used appropriately isn’t bad here, but most of the time its either strictly orange-yellow, or navy blue, with very few complex shadows, giving a kind of repetitive feel, but its not too bad. The sound design is pretty decent, but can be massively improved. Having a soundtrack for a mod this size certainly is impressive, but is a case of, «but does it actually make the game scarier, intense, or significantly play with emotions?» While the soundtrack is definitely pretty good, and I’d love to have it on my iPod or something, I’d probably opt not to have it in this case, as often times it takes away any scare factor. The ambient noises are very good, with the sound of the zombies and headcrabs being welcome, despite missing death sounds, and background crickets increasing atmosphere as well, but should really be utilized more, as its fantastic and underused. But one more thing. The voice acted character is absolutely horrendous, and I think should be removed immediately, as previously, in They Hunger, the protagonist was a blank canvas, a troubled writer that could be anyone you wanted them to be, but unfortunately this is now gone. Kudos should be given to whomever made the zombie models, as they’re really good, but nothing else super fancy in terms of models, although the cars are pretty good, but the train is a tad basic. ALso, what happened to the umbrella? The story has really been toned down due to the size of the team, and a lack of the protagonist’s voice would at least help this, due to its irritability. The gameplay has definitely been improved from the first version. The crowbar used to be abysmally slow, but now it works perfectly fine. You get to use it first on a zombie in a jumpscare (really? A jump scare?), but unlike v. 1, the zombies (and cops) have reasonable health, making them fun to kill. Also, unlike They Hunger, you aren’t always sprinting, but I expected that. Before, there was no sprinting, but now that it’s back, the melee combat, and even some of the platforming is much better. In short, a ton of gameplay was infinitely improved, but still isn’t at the level of quality of They Hunger. One such example of this, is receiving huge amounts of ammunition, sometimes making the game too easy. The game has bad navigation, with many small waterbanks that should be easy to climb, but are often times impossible to traverse, with me using the crouch button to barely clamber on to it. Other problems with navigation include many props in the water that you automatically climb on to, and always being caught on the aesthetic prop scenery when moving backwards, only to be attacked by a zombie. One small but important gripe, is that its impossible to crouch into the furnace without jumping first. Some minor annoyances include really bad platforming, where I would fall off the sloped ledges constantly, or fail difficult jumps, making it tedious, and one stacking puzzle, where the barrel would always be sideways for me. The gunplay has also been vastly improved. (There is a glitch if the pistol’s empty and you hold down the left mouse button) This mod is currently around slightly above average, with more elements of scary lighting and sounds/less action being very welcome. They Hunger is an absolute classic and a blast to play, regardless of whether it’s the first time or the hundred and first time. It has everything anyone could want from a mod, and in the minds of many, was the standard for all single-player Half-Life TC’s.
This is NOT They Hunger.
While I admit that I haven’t played very far in, I can’t bring myself to put any more effort into this mod than I already have. I tried to enjoy it on its own merit, but realized it had very little. The developers actually lost me at the laughably incomprehensible water pump «puzzle,» but I continued on to a fight with multiple zombies in chest deep water before I decided to call it quits. I suppose part of the problem is that the pistol is practically useless, and I can’t rightly determine if it even damages certain zombies (after a full clip into the head without any effect, I could only draw this conclusion considering other zombies took three to four shots to the skull on average). Compared to the original TH, in which the pistol provided consistent and reliable results, I threw my hands in the air.
I actually did make it past this fight and had to fight the movement physics to make it into the next area, killed a few zombies, then was interrupted by a single zombie spawning directly behind me and taking me down to 3 health before a headcrab took me out. While I do admit that these «surprise» zombies were also in the original TH, they announced their arrival very effectively. Please understand this, developer: that’s how you do it. Use audio cues when you’re about to **** someone off to **** them off slightly less than you normally would.
I understand this is an early release (which should not have a 1.x version, because it’s far from ready for prime time), but when your list of changes includes a buff to the pistol, I expect much, much more.
And for the love of all that is good in the world, put a gigantic Neil Manke credit before all else and make it stay on the damn screen for a little while. He deserves a hell of a lot more credit than you have given him.

If you are in mood for They Hunger with updated visuals, then check out They Hunger Remod that was released some months ago. Original They Hunger is very much worth playing, and replaying.
This here Source «remake» is a waste of everyones time, including that of its authors. Unpolished, at times plain ugly looking, with maps that are smaller and in every way inferior to ones from now ancient original (exactly what one expects from a remake made in far superior engine, right. right?), and with gameplay that us utterly unbalanced, cheap and frustrating (you heard of playtesting, dear authors? I doubt that even you thought how this was fun, or in any way enjoyable). 15+ years old original is so much more impressive, enjoyable and professionally made that this «remake». There is no excuse for something like that.

I realize this is read by both the people who made this game and the people considering playing it, so I want to be nice about this.
To start, this project truly feels like a labor of love and it does feel like a lot of hard work was already put into this mod.
To call this version a v1 release (currently, v1.2) is opening it to a lot of harsh criticism when it doesn’t even feel done. This is definitely not a complete feeling game.
There are parts in the level design that feel unpolished, there are parts that feel untested, there are parts that feel incomplete and blocky. For example, the volcano section of this mod has frustrating small ledges that the player has to climb that are barely visible and a single mis-step means death. Parts of this mod feel like they were built to look good but not to play good, and as a result it does neither very well.
Weapons are made weaker than their original counterparts and there doesn’t appear to be justification for this. The crowbar is slow, the pistol is weak and hard to aim, the shotgun is extremely weak (taking a full 4 rounds to take down a single headcrab). The only weapon that feels satisfying is the tommygun.
Health is rare compared to how much damage you unavoidably take from crowds of zombies. This is compounded when travelling from level to level.
There are a lot of things that feel wrong when playing this (including the flavor text for quick saving «your ***».) This mod feels a bit aimless in whether it’s trying to be a faithful recreation or an outright retelling. Parts that changed from the original don’t feel like they were an improvement, while parts that are directly from the original feel a little better, but don’t take advantage of the Source engine.
I feel bad because I can tell this was a major effort from the team. I still feel like the issues with this mod can be fixed, and they need to be fixed, because the mod will feel incomplete until those issues are taken care of. It’s still missing a lot of the iconic scenes from the original mod that this is based on, and it feels like level transitions sometimes are fade to black to hide the missing parts.
I would like to see this mod improve over time, but as it stands (v1.2), it doesn’t feel like a finished release, and it needs a lot of work still.

Главный герой игры — некогда удачливый писатель, предпринимающий попытку дописать начатое произведение. Для этого издатель главного героя снимает дом, в котором бы писатель мог спокойно работать. [3] Однако по пути туда по радио передаётся известие о том, что на данном участке зарегистрировано неизвестное атмосферное явление, заключающееся во внезапных ударах молнии. В машину главного героя ударяет молния, автомобиль падает в воду, и главному герою приходится выбираться из-под воды. Выбравшись, герой попадает в графство Рокуэлл (англ. Rockwell ), где он встречается с множеством изуродованных зомби.
Игра заканчивается в полицейском участке, оккупированном зомби под предводительством зомби-шерифа Честера Роквуда (англ. Chester Rockwood ). Игрок попадает в заключение, вскоре его ожидает казнь. История продолжается в They Hunger 2.
They Hunger 2: Rest in Pieces
Название является искажением выражения «Rest in Peace» — «покойся с миром». «Rest in Pieces» можно перевести как «Покойся по кусочкам».
Сквозь решётку камеры игрок видит, как зомби из полицейского участка начинают уничтожать узников. Камера игрока открывается, его собираются казнить. Внезапно стена полицейского участка взрывается от попадания ракеты. Союзник-полицейский спасает игрока от монстров. Позже становится известно, что власти, узнав о происшествии в Рокуэлле, высылают военных для уничтожения зомби. Пытаясь спастись, игрок так же, как и в первой части, встречается с зомби, а также попадает под огонь полицейских, тоже превращённых в зомби. В ходе игры выясняется, что люди превращаются в зомби неспроста: процессом превращения руководит доктор Франклин, получивший задание по созданию армии зомби.
Игрок попадает в лабораторию доктора Франклина, где видны следы его экспериментов. По случайности в лаборатории начинается пожар, в котором оказывается как игрок, так и доктор Франклин. На этом вторая часть заканчивается.
They Hunger 3: Rude Awakening
Название переводится как «Горькое разочарование».
Игрок пробуждается в пустом госпитале Рокуэлла. Однако и тут оказываются зомби. Спасаясь из госпиталя, игрок попадает в деревню, также захваченную зомби. Кроме того, деревенский скот тоже подвергся заражению.
Игроку удаётся вернуться в лабораторию доктора Франклина, где его снова берут в плен и отвозят в место, похожее на Стоунхендж, где шериф произносит речь перед зомби, однако атака правительственных войск срывает речь и казнь игрока. Тот спасается и снова бежит в лабораторию, где встречает не зомбированного помощника шерифа. Вместе с ним игрок спасается, используя полицейский вертолёт. Однако спасению мешает доктор Франклин, восстановленный после пожара и ставший киборгом. После уничтожения доктора игроку предстоит расправиться с правительственными военными, которые атакуют вертолёт, а также с шерифом, догоняющим вертолёт своего помощника. Сбитый вертолёт шерифа падает в одно из Великих озёр. Вертолёт помощника улетает на фоне заката. Игра заканчивается.
They Hunger 4: Lost Souls
Коммерческая игра на движке Source, которая была в стадии разработки, но потом была принята сообществом отменённой из-за очень долгого отсутствия информации и обновлений от разработчиков. Полное название — They Hunger: Lost Souls, вместо «временного» (по слухам) They Hunger: Source.

Любительский ремейк игры на движке Source. Мод включает в себя только переделку первой главы с отсутствующим финалом, который наделал много шума и получил спорные отзывы среди игроков. В основном, публика раскритиковала сильный дисбаланс в плане сложности:
Разработчики так же пытались собрать средства на перенос модификации как полноценной игры с движка Source на Unreal Engine 4, однако из нужных 1500 долларов удалось собрать лишь 3. На данный момент никаких новостей о дальнейшей работе над проектом нету, а разработчики никак не контактируют и не отвечают на сообщения и комментарии игроков.

Эпизод 2: Rest in pieces.
Перебейте зомби, соберите патроны. На диване лежит ставший уже родным зонтик, а на полу – вожделенная коробка со снайперской винтовкой. Тут стенку с доской объявлений проломит зомби, убейте его, а сами зайдите туда, где он был.
Тут на стене располагается пульт управления, который контролирует ту самую решётчатую дверь в тоннеле. Выключите пульт. Надпись должна быть «Security control OFF». Возвращайтесь к полицейскому и берите его с собой, он вам сильно пригодится.
Теперь решётчатая дверь открывается простым нажатием на пульте рядом с ней. Выходите. Тут расклад такой: двое ментов на крыше дома, где перекинута доска, трое зомби за углом, если пройти чуть дальше, ещё один зомби – в маленьком закутке, под крышей здания с ментами наверху, ещё один – в маленьком помещении, вход в которое располагается напротив этого самого здания. Когда убьёте всех – заколоченную дверь позади вас сломают зомби. Их там трое. Я рекомендую сохраниться, когда будете выходить из тоннеля и загружаться заново, если что-то пойдет не так (полицейский не вовремя погибнет, или просто мало здоровья останется). После того, как убьёте всех – идите в выломанную мертвяками дверь, проходите через комнату, в которой горит огонь, тут хедкраба встретите, проходите дальше, здесь зомби. Убив его – разбейте коробку в углу (за перевёрнутой койкой), в ней патроны к снайперке. Идите дальше, выйдете на задний двор.
Заходите в дверь с надписью «Danger». Включите фонарик и бегите по лестнице, не останавливаясь в тёмном помещении, там сидят жучки, которые запросто могут закусать до смерти.
Слева от места вашего выхода есть ещё один тоннель. В нём 5 или 6 мертвяков, напротив этого тоннеля наверху – балкон, на котором мент-зомби, и, наконец, за лестницей ещё двое мертвяков (один без головы).
Когда всех перебьёте – идите в тоннель, что справа от места вашего выхода, который заканчивается тупиком. Там под водой лежит труп полицая, а рядом с ним – дробовик. Возвращайтесь к месту побоища и поднимайтесь по лестнице. Слева от вас – дверь на балкончик, на котором стоял мент (заперта), слева ещё одна дверь, за ней – двое ментов. Действуем так: Достаем снайперку, включаем прицел, и целимся в ту дверь, что справа от лестницы. Теперь начинаем пятиться назад, пока не упрёмся в запертую дверь. Тут дверь с метами откроется, и мы завалим их из снайперки (цельтесь в голову). Теперь нужно перепрыгнуть на балкончик, где стоял мент. Тут 3 ящика. В одном гаечный ключ, в другом аптечка, в третьем – динамит. Дёргайте рубильник на стене и выходите через дверь. Идите в тоннель, где было много мертвяков, там теперь открылась решётка.
Снова идите к рубильнику, дёргайте его, теперь открылась ещё одна решётка. Опять в тот же тоннель, только на развилке направо, а не налево (если решётка не открыта, то возвращайтесь к рубильнику и дёргайте его до тех пор, пока путь не будет свободен). Пройдя по тоннелю, вы окажетесь в коридоре, который заканчивается балкончиком со стоящим на нём ментом. Вылезайте на сушу и разбивайте треснувшую кирпичную кладку, за нею будет ящик, в котором лежат 2 гранаты для подствольника (автомата правда нету ещё :)). Идите в проход в стене, в первом тёмном закоулке есть ящик с патронами для дробовика. Железная дверь заперта, так что выбивайте маленькое зарешёченное окошко и пролезайте туда. Пройдя дальше, окажетесь в большом помещении. Приготовьте дробовик, дозарядите его до полной обоймы, если зайдёте за угол, то наткнётесь на стаю из четырёх собак, плюс ко всему, стену проломят двое зомби. Перебейте всех, и, если надо, возьмите аптечку в одном из ящиков.
Идите туда, где были собаки, проходите коридор до конца. Справа и слева от вас будет по двери. Левая заперта, так что идём в правую. Спускаемся по винтовой лестнице, перепрыгиваем через большую синюю трубу, пролезаем под второй трубой, бьём решётку в полу и прыгаем вниз. Проплыв по тоннелю под водой, вы окажетесь в большом овальном помещении. Тут двое ментов и несколько серых крокодилов. Лично я перебил всех из обычного пистолета.
Наконец-то! Свежий воздух! Тут вас поджидают собаки. Перестреляете всех, затем заходите в дом, убейте тётку-зомби, нажмите переключатель на стене, возьмите со стола Шмайсер. Теперь железная дверь открыта, и нужно туда вернуться. В ящиках валяются аптечки и обоймы к шмайсеру. Открывайте железную дверь, проходите по решётчатому мостику. Зомби, убивший солдата, прямо за углом. Спускайтесь вниз.
Сейчас вы у водяного насоса. Прыгайте в воду и расстреляйте акулу, плавающую за решёткой, только не приближайтесь к ротору насоса, а то вас перемелет. Выныривайте и идите в комнату управления (проход на одной из стен) Там на стене есть жёлтая кнопка с надписью «Power». Нажимайте её и быстро ныряйте в воду. Плывите мимо ротора (время ограничено, скоро ротор снова включится!) по подводному тоннелю, иногда внизу будут попадаться проходы, проплывайте туда, чтобы отдышаться. Вынырнете вы в озере. Тут же вылезайте на берег, так как в озере поселилась акула. Подбирайте аптечку в палатке и поднимайтесь на скалу. Идите по ущелью, пока не увидите горящий грузовик, у которого греются мертвяки. Кидайте туда динамит и подбирайте патроны. Возвращайтесь к краю скалы и смотрите вниз, там вход в тоннель в скале. Осторожно спрыгивайте вниз, идите по тоннелю. Вы дойдёте до небольшого помещения со стеклом в стене.
Послушайте разговор шерифа и доктора. Когда оба уйдут, охранник подойдёт и откроет дверь. Тут же стреляйте и выходите в подземный гараж.
Направляйтесь мимо большой железной решётки с трупом мента за нею, по коридору. Выходите на улицу. В особняк доктора мы пока не пойдём. Идите по асфальтовой дороге, пока не дойдёте до скал. Проходите дальше, расстреливайте издалека бочку рядом с горящим грузовиком. В кузове лежит ящик со снайперкой, в ящиках – аптечка и патроны. Когда пойдёте обратно, на вас нападут трое собак.
Теперь будьте внимательны. На обратном пути вы пройдёте мимо фонаря на столбе. Не пропустите его! Поднимайтесь по вымощенной серым кирпичом дорожке. Перед вами должна быть запертая решётчатая дверь в особняк. Справа на небольшой площадке стоит стол. Подталкивайте его к решётке вплотную, прыгайте на него, затем через решётку. Теперь мы на территории поместья. Ура, товарищи!
Идите дальше, пока не дойдёте до главного входа в особняк.
Внимание, в этом месте лучше сохраниться до нажатия кнопки звонка, у меня иногда игра вылетала в винды.
Жмите на звонок (один раз) и отбегайте назад.
Это из-за ещё одного глюка, если промахнётесь и нажмёте на дверь, то есть шанс, что игра заглючит, а дверь не откроется.
Ладно, допустим, что всё прошло гладко, и некто открыл Вам дверь. Заходите внутрь. Никого нету. Сейчас вы в просторной комнате с большой картиной на стене (где доктор перерезает ленточку). В углу есть дверь с надписью «Dr. Franklin», которая сейчас заперта. Наша цель – открыть её. Идите мимо картины, придёте в гостиную, где стоит рояль и горит камин. Поднимайтесь по лестнице и идите прямо, мимо стеллажей с книгами. Первая дверь, которая вам попадётся, ведёт в ванную комнату. Если нужна аптечка – заходите, там она есть (ума не приложу, зачем). Выходите из ванной. Перед вами две лестницы: одна – вверх, другая вниз. Та, что вниз, ведёт в комнату Альфреда, ассистента доктора Франклина. Если хотите – можете сходить туда, там есть патроны в ящиках. Нам же важна лестница, которая ведёт наверх, в спальню доктора. Заходите туда. Сохранитесь обязательно, и достаньте зонтик!
Подходите к двери стенного шкафа и откройте её (кнопка «использование»). Тут на стене есть кнопка с надписью «Asylum security Dr. Franklin.». Нажимайте её. Теперь запертая дверь открыта. Вылезайте из шкафа. Когда подойдёте к двери, батарея отопления позади вас взорвётся, и из-за неё выскочат два таракана, которые начнут кусаться. Возвращайтесь к той двери, что была заперта. Заходите внутрь и послушайте магнитофон. Когда наслушаетесь – выходите, тут вы встретите Альфреда. Он скажет примерно следующее: «Господи, неужели хоть вы нормальный! Тут вокруг полно зомби! Я – Альфред, ассистент доктора Франклина. Мы с ним вместе проводили эксперименты в подземной лаборатории, тогда-то он и нашёл что-то в городской воде. Идём, я покажу вам…» Он пойдёт ко входу в секретную лабораторию, следуйте за ним. Подождите, пока он завяжет шнурки на ботинке и откроет вам дверь. Идите внутрь, только осторожно.
Теперь садитесь в лифт и поезжайте на нижний этаж. Там идите ко входу в лабораторию. Большая решётчатая дверь открывается при приближении к ней. Проходите внутрь, поднимайтесь по лестнице, можете аккуратно проползти по карнизу к ящикам, там патроны к снайперке и аптечка. Идите по коридору за угол, пока не услышите булькающий звук, прыгайте под одну из арок в стене и попадёте в зал, где у стены стоит аквариум с человеческими головами.
Откройте решётчатую дверь, за которой находится какое-то оборудование. Там наверху вентиляционный люк, но до него не достать. Идите в холодильник, добейте человека, висящего на крюке. Теперь идите в соседнюю комнату холодильника и толкайте к выходу ящик с мясом, стоящий на полу. Когда вытащите ящик из холодильника – подтаскивайте его к люку и полезайте в вентиляцию. Ползти будете долго, когда наконец спрыгнете вниз – бейте все ящики и идите в коридор, который приведёт вас в большой зал с установкой посредине. Доставайте дробовик и дозарядите обойму, сейчас будет драка.
Забегая вперёд скажу, что доктор выжил, но в конце 3-го эпизода мы его замочим.
Тут коридор, в конце которого сидит вышибала и три оторванные руки. Можете всех перебить, а можете быстро пробежать до помещения в конце коридора и нырнуть в вентиляционный люк у пола. Когда сделаете это – карабкайтесь вверх по лестнице и попадёте в подвал Альфреда в особняке доктора. Выбирайтесь оттуда и снова идите ко входу в подземную лабораторию (куда вас Альфред провожал).
Деревянную дверь выломает монстр, убейте его и выходите во дворик. Перестреляйте тут всех и заходите в белое здание с надписью «Морг» (Morgue) над дверью. Идите налево, тут на подъёмнике стоит гроб. Подождите, пока из него вылезет мертвяк, прибейте его и спускайтесь вниз. Пройдите немного вперёд и заходите в комнату с морозильными камерами. Тут стоит профессор, а на столе бьётся чьё-то сердце. Идите в соседнюю комнату, нажмите кнопку на стене. Скелет в аквариуме оживёт, а вместе с ним и все скелеты в радиусе нескольких километров, теперь придётся отбиваться ещё и от них.
На выходе из этой комнаты вас будут поджидать ещё несколько скелетов. Часть стены обрушилась, теперь можно вылезти на улицу через этот проход. Перебейте всех и тут. За деревом (там, где был один из скелетов) есть лестница. Поднимайтесь на самый верх. Вы должны оказаться на чердаке. Выламывайте вентиляционную решётку и выбирайтесь на крышу. На коньке крыши, что левее вашей, сидит рука. Я снял её из снайперки.
Теперь аккуратно идите по крыше и спрыгивайте по другую сторону забора. Здесь есть хедкраб. Найдите заколоченную дверь, сломайте доски и проходите внутрь. Тут будет дверь. Выломайте покосившуюся решётку, изнутри дверь забаррикадирована доской. Если есть граната – просто киньте внутрь, если её нет – то аккуратно расстреляйте доску из пистолета (около 9-ти выстрелов надо).
Когда пройдёте через дверь – будете идти мимо окна. Там увидите, как охранника убило взрывом микроволновки. Эта комната сейчас заперта, но туда мы ещё попадём. Идите дальше. Тут мертвяк вылезает прямо из-под пола. Прикончите его и идите в проход справа от того места, откуда он вылез. Попадёте в помещение, где стоит автомат с газировкой, рядом с ним копошится зомби. Тут, кстати, полно скелетов, так что будьте внимательны. Один скелет притаился за вторым автоматом (красного цвета) убейте и его, чтобы потом проблем не было. Потолок проломит хедкраб. Запрыгивайте на автомат с газировкой и залезайте на чердак. Прямо перед вами дыра, ведущая в кладовую. Я бы не советовал лезть туда сразу, лучше найдите в дальнем углу чердака проходик, ведущий в комнату, где погиб охранник. Тут довольно много амуниции.
Теперь можно снова залезть на чердак и спускаться в кладовой. В ящике в углу есть аптечка. Выходите и поднимайтесь по лестнице. Будет длинный извивающийся коридор, который закончится лестницей вниз (там на стене ещё указатель «Doctor’s residence»). Спускайтесь вниз пройдите ещё немного. Вы снова в особняке. Заблудиться тут невозможно – просто идите прямо и заглядывайте во все шкафы во всех комнатах.
Когда выйдете в тоннель с кирпичными стенами – идите НАПРАВО (!) Вы выйдете к главным воротам в особняк, здесь ждут четыре собаки. Открывайте главные ворота и идите налево, обратно в подземный гараж. Теперь открыта дверь, за которой лежал мёртвый полицейский (если помните, мы открыли её перед тем, как спуститься в лабораторию). Идите по этому проходу. Когда выйдете на воздух – перед вами буде охранник, только он к вам идёт спиной. Снимите из снайперки его и охранника на вышке справа, перестреляйте всех собак. Идите дальше. Тут тоннель, рядом с которым есть лестница на стене. Поднимайтесь наверх, перебейте всех охранников, подберите аптечки (есть на каждой из вышек). Нажимайте на кнопку на любой из вышек. Раздастся сигнал тревоги, дверь напротив вышки откроется, оттуда выбежит охранник. Убейте его и идите внутрь.
Спускайтесь по лестнице и выходите во двор тюрьмы. Тут несколько псов. На земле есть две вентиляционные шахты. Выбейте решётку на одной из них и прыгайте вниз.
Вы в маленьком дворике. На стене двое охранников, которых лучше всего прибить из снайперки, а за углом – две собаки. За деревом у бетонной стены есть заколоченный люк, ведущий в котельную. Спускайтесь туда и поверните красный вентиль на трубе бойлера. Отойдите подальше, т. к. бойлер рванёт, и его дверца пробьёт дыру в стене. Идите туда, убейте там пару мертвецов и идите через дверь.
Вы в помещении с клетчатым полом. Найдите лифт, но не нажимайте кнопку, а убейте мертвяка в углу и идите в дверь с надписью «Quarantine» над входом. Прямо на вас выбежит охранник. Поднимайтесь по лестнице и убейте слева ещё одного охранника и его ручного Барбоса. Если хотите – возьмите Кольт на шкафчике. Нажимайте кнопку на стене. Теперь двери камер открыты и из них повылезали скелеты и зомби.
Найдите в одной из камер (на нижнем ярусе) вентиляционную решётку, выбейте её и лезьте внутрь. Аккуратно проползите по карнизу и направляйтесь к противоположной стороне чердака (там ещё коробки стоят). Бойлер внизу взорвётся ещё раз и зазвенит пожарная сигнализация. Спрыгивайте на лестницу. Внизу в ящиках аптечка и гранаты к подствольнику. Уходите через дверь наверху, поднимайтесь по лестнице. В следующей комнате пол обвалится прямо перед вами, так что не свалитесь случайно. Снова поднимитесь по лестнице и запрыгните на узкую серую трубу, уходящую в пол. Сломайте балку, мешающую пройти, и выходите в дверь.
Вы увидите огромную бочку. Подойдите и поверните вентиль. Вытечет лужа масла, которая загорится, огонь пойдёт к бочке… Из пролома выбежит наш знакомый – Доктор Франклин. Секунду спустя, прогремит оглушительный взрыв…

Все слышали о моде they hunger,который состоит из трёх частей.ну и модели там не очень качественные,но играть можно. геймплэй и сюжет мода очень впечатлил))). в моде мы играем за писателя(имя которого некому неизвестно) начинается всё с того что на радиостанции сообщают о аномальных погодных явлениях плюс по городку начали разгуливать мертвяки, причина их появления эксприменты др.франклина(именно с ним нужно рассправится в 3й части) естественно это слушали все(а может и нет)и когда гробовщик ехал на своём катафалге,возле реки по его машине ударила молния(был сильный дождь) и недочёт этого дождя в том что вода льётся не с неба а наоборот небо высасывает воду из земли

Никто уже и не надеется, что мод выйдет: Lost Souls анонсирован очень давно, и новостей с тех пор. Нет вообще. Остаётся надеяться, что мод, как и БМС, сильно задерживается в своей разработке, но если по БМС хоть какие-то новости и движения есть, то этот мод. Скорее всего, он мёртв.

Это был мой первый и единственный мод для ХЛ1, в который я играл.. В далёёёёком ветхобаянном эдак 2004 или 2005 году. Он был на сборнике с ХЛ1, там ещё какие то другие моды были, помню только некую Opera и всё.

Мне вот наверно скилл подняли на десятки процентов Хаус в оригинале (и с сабами оригинальными) и портал 2 (без сабов уже).
Хотя я всё равно ущербен в плане составления своих предложений.

А вообще, я видел в Болталке вот эту ветку: http://forums.playground.ru/talk/224519/ Даже не думал, что там есть такие классные темы! Правда, большинство всё равно не может сложить даже простые предложения =( Напр., перл I so think. Но есть и шарящие юзеры, которые стараются поправлять таких.
Там даже мне видно что сама идейная структура фраз у абсолютного большинства, она русскоязычна, чем и мои предложения нередко страдают, вроде грамотно составлены, но по-русски вот они составлены, по русскому образу составления мыслей и фраз.

They Hunger is a ‘zombie themed’ modification for the video-game Half-Life, which is divided in a set of 3 episodes: They Hunger 1, They Hunger 2: Rest in pieces, They Hunger 3: Rude awakening.
They Hunger was created and developed by Black Widow Games. All three episodes were released on February 2000, September 2000 and June 2001 respectively. The trilogy contains new weapons, as well as new monsters and a gripping plot.

Welcome to the city of Belück. A quiet town isolated high up in the mountains. You are a young factory worker visiting the town for the first time. Your sister lives here and you look forward to meeting her. As you arrive to the town, the Police stops you. They wont let you get further into the city and they wont tell you why. A friendly policeman points you toward the closest motel and informs you that in the morning the traffic will flow as normal again. You however, have a cold feeling something is not right.
More Hunger is a fan prequel to They Hunger using the same textures as the original mod and [_-=MTB=-_]’s «N’sane» Pack (the simple version) for the weapons and animations. So far only the demo is released.

hey i need help cus when i on map mh2 when the guy give you the shotgun after i climb a rope then guy try to talk but it crash it say SV_startsound volume= 765
Try lowering your volume in the game settings to something below 50%
Pretty good, pretty good- I don’t necessarily think the They Hunger guns need to be reskinned, and I think the original footstep sounds are fine, if people want those additions they’re easy to add using the They Hunger packs. But I’m glad you kept the original zombie models as opposed to the addon models everybody uses. I noticed the female zombies don’t have their voices, the headless zombies don’t have theirs, etc, but I kinda like what you’ve done with them. The first zombie you see when you get the shovel isn’t really responsive, just kind of stand there in the doorway, which I’d think for a jump-scare you’d want something to come at you at least slowly through the door.
I might recommend making progressively faster zombies as the story goes on, like original They Hunger speed zombies, then the later They Hunger episodes’ faster zombies. I like the shambling effect, but they’re pretty much harmless and more atmospheric, which is good for the start, but I think the difficulty factor needs to be remembered. Although. I’d suggest avoiding some of the sloppier zombie models like the zombie farmer and the train conductor zombie, too obviously TFC skins. Everything I saw though was good, very convincing undead, the voice acting didn’t make me want to stab anybody in the face, you’ve got something good here.
