About This Love
«This Love» is a song by the American pop rock band Maroon 5. The song was released as the second single from their debut album, Songs About Jane (2002). The track is built around a piano-led strut and a repeating guitar sound. The song’s lyrics are based on Levine’s break-up with an ex-girlfriend. He revealed that the song was written in the «most emotionally trying time» in his life. He has also described the lyrics of this song as being extremely erotic. «This Love» was critically acclaimed by music critics, who noted the track’s musicscape. It was released on January 27, 2004, as the second single from Songs About Jane. The song entered the top ten on most charts, topping several of Billboard magazine’s component charts, including reaching the number one spot on the Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks chart. The music video was met with controversy, regarding extended intimate scenes between Levine and his then-girlfriend. «This Love» helped Maroon 5 win the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist and was the third most played song of 2004. The live version of the song won Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 2006 Grammy Awards and to date, this is one of Maroon 5’s most successful songs. more »

This Love
I was so high I did not recognize
The fire burning in her eyes
The chaos that controlled my mind
Whispered goodbye and she got on a plane
Never to return again
But always in my heart
This love has taken its toll on me
She said Goodbye too many times before
her heart is breaking in front of me
I have no choice cause I won’t say goodbye anymore
I tried my best to feed her appetite
Keep her coming every night
So hard to keep her satisfied
Kept playing love like it was just a game
Pretending to feel the same
Then turn around and leave again
This love has taken its toll on me
She said Goodbye too many times before
And her heart is breaking in front of me
I have no choice cause I won’t say goodbye anymore
I’ll fix these broken things
Repair your broken wings
And make sure everything’s alright
My pressure on your hips
Sinking my fingertips
Into every inch of you
Cause I know that’s what you want me to do
This love has taken its toll on me
She said Goodbye too many times before
And her heart is breaking in front of me
I have no choice cause I won’t say goodbye anymore
This love has taken its toll on me
She said Goodbye too many times before
And her heart is breaking in front of me
She said goodbye too many times before

MAROON 5
I was so high I did not recognize
The fire burning in her eyes
The chaos that controlled my mind
Whispered goodbye as she got on a plane
Never to return again but always in my heart, oh
This love has taken its toll on me
She said goodbye too many times before
And her heart is breakin’ in front of me
And I have no choice, ’cause I won’t say goodbye anymore
Whoa, whoa, whoa
I tried my best to feed her appetite
Keep her coming every night
So hard to keep her satisfied, oh
Kept playing love like it was just a game
Pretending to feel the same
Then turn around and leave again, but uh-oh
This love has taken its toll on me
She said goodbye too many times before
And her heart is breakin’ in front of me
And I have no choice, ’cause I won’t say goodbye anymore
Whoa, whoa, whoa
I’ll fix these broken things, repair your broken wings
And make sure everything’s all right
(It’s all right, it’s all right)
My pressure on your hips, I’m sinking my fingertips into
Every inch of you
‘Cause I know that’s what you want me to do
This love has taken its toll on me
She said goodbye too many times before
Her heart is breakin’ in front of me
And I have no choice, ’cause I won’t say goodbye anymore
This love has taken its toll on me
She said goodbye too many times before
And my heart is breakin’ in front of me
And she said goodbye too many times before
This love has taken its toll on me
She said goodbye too many times before
Her heart is breakin’ in front of me
But I have no choice, ’cause I won’t say goodbye anymore
This love has taken its toll on me
She said goodbye too many times before
Her heart is breakin’ in front of me
But I have no choice, ’cause I won’t say goodbye anymore

I love my classic rock music, but I have to say Songs About Jane is one of my favourite albums ever. It’s been 8 years, and my music diversity has grown immensely, but this still remains a favourite. This song I feel like is one of the theme songs of the whole album. Whether or not it’s over played or you don’t like it because it’s immoral, you gotta admit it’s honest.
My InterpretationIt is my humble opinion that this song is about cocaine addiction.
A wise man once told me that the album is called Songs About Jane; people call coke «girl» or «white girl», and Songs About Jane just means songs about a girl, right?
Now, the lyric analysis.
I was so high I did not recognize
The fire burning in her eyes
The chaos that controlled my mind—- He says it straight up right here. He was so high that he didn’t even realize that it was controlling his mind. He establishes right in the beginning lines that he is an addict.
Whispered goodbye and she got on a plane
Never to return again
But always in my heart—- The «she» he refers to is the cocaine. He personifies the cocaine and gives it its own personality and metaphorically refers to the struggles he faces with addiction to the struggle one would face with a complicated relationship/breakup. These lines describe him being forced into rehabilitation- the cocaine is being taken from him and he will never be able to use again, but he will always remember it and keep it in his heart.
This love has taken its toll on me
She said goodbye too many times before
And her heart is breaking in front of me
I have no choice cause I won’t say goodbye anymore—- Here he is determined to overcome his addiction, but he struggles to recover because, well, he is dependent on the substance. He acknowledges that «this love» (his addiction) has taken a huge toll on him both physically and mentally. He keeps trying to quit it («she says goodbye») but he keeps coming back to it and having to say goodbye over again. He now recognizes that he has no choice, he has to overcome this addiction and he is determined to not have to go through this again.
I tried my best to feed her appetite
Keep her coming every night
So hard to keep her satisfied
Kept playing love like it was just a game
Pretending to feel the same
Then turn around and leave again—- This I believe is when the point of view shifts to the cocaine itself. The «she» it speaks of is the struggling addict. Metaphorically, the cocaine is trying to feed the addict’s appetite, the hunger and craving she has for the drug that keeps her coming every night because she just needs more and more. The addict is absolutely invested in this, but for the cocaine it’s nothing but a game as it manipulates and controls the user, pretending to make everything better but turning around and leaving during the comedown period.
I’ll fix these broken things
Repair your broken wings
And make sure everything’s alright
My pressure on your hips
Sinking my fingertips
Into every inch of you
Cause I know that’s what you want me to do—- The cocaine offers a temporary fix, it’ll fix everything that is going wrong in the addict’s life and make it seem like anything is possible. The descriptions of an intimate relationship metaphorically allude to the close relationship between user and drugs.
The main theme throughout the song is the unstable relationship which, if you dig deeper, is a personification of the addiction. This «girlfriend» he describes is the cocaine and he keeps coming back to it even though he knows he needs to stop, but it just satisfies him like nothing else can. He documents his struggles with addiction and recovery in this song, touching on how good it makes him feel when he uses and how he is fighting to escape its control.

I was so high I did not recognize
The fire burning in her eyes
The chaos that controlled my mind
Whispered goodbye and she got on a plane
Never to return again
But always in my heart
This love has taken its toll on me
She said Goodbye too many times before
Her heart is breaking in front of me
I have no choice cause I won’t say goodbye anymore
I tried my best to feed her appetite
Keep her coming every night
So hard to keep her satisfied
Kept playing love like it was just a game
Pretending to feel the same
Then turn around and leave again
This love has taken its toll on me
She said Goodbye too many times before
And her heart is breaking in front of me
I have no choice cause I won’t say goodbye anymore
I’ll fix these broken things
Repair your broken wings
And make sure everything’s alright
My pressure on your hips
Sinking my fingertips
Into every inch of you
Cause I know that’s what you want me to do
This love has taken its toll on me
She said Goodbye too many times before

I have a very strong memory of listening to this song while I was laid back in the dentist chair as my teeth were being drilled on.
I- I remember that I had four of my teeth removed so that adult teeth could grow in there place- tf
Why do we all have the same memories? In my case it was getting my first ever braces.
Bruh same. It’s always songs like this, that honestly have no place where they’re being played🤣🤣🤣
Its crazy how you can sing a song millions of times and then suddenly realize what the lyrics really mean
like drunk in love by beyoncé 😭
@popcorn well, he’s sick of saying goodbye, so he just won’t anymore (by leaving her) because he was sick of her coming back and then saying goodbye and coming back repeatedly, at least that’s how I see it
@Chini Willy bc he’s tired of her crap
Why won’t he say good bye anymore?
When you realize a favorite song from childhood has dirty lyrics that you used to sing along to out loud 😶
Yeeeeah agree hahahaha
@TCAG Productions «sinking my fingertips into every inch of you»
I swear Maroon 5 has the catchiest heartbreak songs you’ll hear
Maroon 5: The band of my early childhood. I’d always hear their songs on the radio in the car with my brother when I was younger. This and many more of their songs are so nostalgic. Almost brings a tear to my eye. I miss those days, I’m only 13, but I still miss them, even though his song is 2 years older than me.
I have a vivid memory of when I was five. Me, my mom, and my brother pulled up to the dairy Queen and I got a vanilla ice cream cone and my brother got chocolate while this song was playing on the radio. That was 15 years ago.
Depending on what month that happened, I was either a baby or wasn’t even born yet
Shit man…I’m 18 and I’m crying for nostalgia
Lmao same, this song used to always be playing in my house
I was.. oh I’m fourteen now, I didn’t even born
today i “graduated” my middle school and am now ready to go to highschool. this song was playing the last five minutes of that day. it’s been stuck in my head ever since that moment. when everyone left the classes and ran the halls so excited as ever. felt like a movie and a fever dream all in one. im really gonna miss those middle school moments, friends, memories, just like today. its funny how one random song can just attach inself to a memory and whenever you hear it that’s all you think about. ill remember those moments and this song dearly from now on
I also just graduated 8th and found this song. Funny
this song is pretty generic in all of my memories.

MAROON 5 lyrics : «This Love»
I was so high I did not recognize
The fire burning in her eyes
The chaos that controlled my mind
Whispered goodbye and she got on a plane
Never to return again
But always in my heart
This love has taken its toll on me
She said Goodbye too many times before
And her heart is breaking in front of me
I have no choice cause I won’t say goodbye anymore
I tried my best to feed her appetite
Keep her coming every night
So hard to keep her satisfied
Kept playing love like it was just a game
Pretending to feel the same
Then turn around and leave again
This love has taken its toll on me
She said Goodbye too many times before
And her heart is breaking in front of me
I have no choice cause I won’t say goodbye anymore
I’ll fix these broken things
Repair your broken wings
And make sure everything’s alright
My pressure on your hips
Sinking my fingertips
Into every inch of you
Cause I know that’s what you want me to do
This love has taken its toll on me
She said Goodbye too many times before
And her heart is breaking in front of me
I have no choice cause I won’t say goodbye anymore
This love has taken its toll on me
She said Goodbye too many times before
And my heart is breaking in front of me
She said Goodbye too many times before
This love has taken its toll on me
She said Goodbye too many times before
And her heart is breaking in front of me
I have no choice cause I won’t say goodbye anymore.

Clear blue water, high tide came and brought you in
And I could go, on and on, on and on, and I will
Skies grew darker, currents swept you out again
And you were just gone and gone, gone and gone
In silent screams, in wildest dreams
I never dreamed of this
This love is good, this love is bad
This love is alive back from the dead
These hands had to let it go free
And this love came back to me
Tossing, turning, struggle through the night with someone new
And I could go on and on, on and on
Lantern, burning, flickered through the night only for you
But you were still gone, gone, gone
Been losing grip, on sinking ships
You showed up just in time
This love is good, this love is bad
This love is alive back from the dead
These hands had to let it go free
And this love came back to me
This love left a permanent mark
This love is glowing in the dark
These hands had to let it go free
And this love came back to me
This love, this love, this love, this love.
This love, this love, this love, this love.
This love, this love, this love, this love.
This love, this love, this love, this love.
Your kiss, my cheek, I watched you leave
Your smile, my ghost, I fell to my knees
When you’re young you just run
But you come back to what you need
This love is good, this love is bad
This love is alive back from the dead
These hands had to let it go free
And this love came back to me
This love left a permanent mark
This love is glowing in the dark
These hands had to let it go free
And this love came back to me
This love, this love, this love, this love.

This Love – Maroon 5
This Love – Maroon 5
Rolling Stone.

This Love – Maroon 5
I was so high I did not recognize
The fire burning in her eyes
The chaos that controlled my mind
Whispered goodbye and she got on a plane
Never to return again
But always in my heart
Chorus:
This love has taken its toll on me
She said Goodbye too many times before
her heart is breaking in front of me
I have no choice cause I won’t say goodbye anymore
I tried my best to feed her appetite
Keep her coming every night
So hard to keep her satisfied
Kept playing love like it was just a game
Pretending to feel the same
Then turn around and leave again
I’ll fix these broken things
Repair your broken wings
And make sure everything’s alright
My pressure on your hips
Sinking my fingertips
Into every inch of you
Cause I know that’s what you want me to do
This Love
