Walt Disney World Quest Magical Racing Tour boasts more playable characters than any kart racer before it (a total of 13 are offered), and each of the game’s tracks allows you to maneuver a different vehicle. Instead of being confined to just a go-kart, you’ll get a bobsled, or a rocket ship, and several others. Collect a myriad of power-ups to your vehicle such as Mickey coins which allow you to race a little faster with each additional coin you collect. Or use the guided bottle rocket to get a speed boost and home in on your opponent. You can also collect items that can be used against your opponents like the frog spell, which will leave them hopping in your dust. Or launch an acorn at them and send them flying out of control.

Magical Racing Tour also features a VS mode where you can challenge a friend (or enemy) to sudden death, go-kart style. Zip around thirteen different arenas, collecting weapons and power-ups to obliterate your neighbor. The Time Trial mode allows you to familiarize yourself with each of the tracks without other competitors, while you race against the clock.

Stuck at any point? Jiminy Cricket not only provides much of the narration on your quest, but he also dispenses racing tips free of charge.

The game consists of normal kart racing gameplay, racing in three-lap races around tracks inspired by Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Blizzard Beach, Dinosaur, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, the Haunted Mansion, the Jungle Cruise, Tomorrowland Speedway, Space Mountain, and Pirates of the Caribbean to win parts for the fireworks machine in the game’s story mode. Completing the story will also unlock a track inspired by Splash Mountain. However, on tracks inspired by Test Track, Typhoon Lagoon, and Disney Studios Florida, players must collect thirty coins around the driving areas of these tracks within four minutes in order to complete their events.

With the exceptions of Chip, Dale (both of whom appear in their Rescue Rangers outfits), and Jiminy Cricket, the game’s playable characters are original characters made for the game.

I had totally forgotten about the Test Track chompers. Though now that I think about it, I may be confusing them with the chain chomps from Mario Kart.

I believe you failed to mention that this game even used some original music tracks from their rides– at the very least the famous “Yo Ho, Yo Ho,” “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah,” and “Grim Grinning Ghosts” do a lot to up the “wow” factor of their respective racetracks. Was Space Mountain’s song an original one? I remember it being sort of heavy and intimidating, but cool! Dionsaur and Jungle Cruise got sort of drummy tribal sounding soundtracks. And the Test Track coin collection board was sort of scary, with all kind of nasty chompers just waiting to flatten you and bless your family with extra Disney Dining credits.

I LOVE THIS GAME! I still have it and kept my PS2 just so I could play it. In my family no one could beat me. I was the racing master. I think it’s because I used the amazing Tiara Damage. I think it would be funny to design shirts with all the racing characters and wear em into the parks!

I used to play this game until my hands no longer functioned (and I’m not even a big video game fan). It is absolutely fantastic. I haven’t played it since at least 2004. Thanks to your post, I think it’s time to dig out the Playstation and go for a spin. Thanks.

The Forgotten Charms of Walt Disney World Quest: Magical Racing Tour

The actual characters, on the other hand, are oddball one-offs made with refreshingly little eye for action figure sales. Most are derived from the black-nosed Disney genus of “Dogs, probably” and all are defined by their love of Walt Disney World. Baron Karlott lives for the Haunted Mansion, though the state of his mortality is up for debate. Polly Roger brings her own sword on Pirates of the Caribbean. Bruno Biggs appears to be Pete’s illegitimate son. There’s an unlockable RoboCop duck. They may not be famous, but like real theme park superfans, at least they’re strange.

Wherever possible, the music is pulled straight from the source. Space Mountain uses Aarin Richard’s 1996 score for the Disneyland version, featuring the unmistakable surf sounds of Dick Dale. “Yo, Ho!” and “Grim Grinning Ghosts” are the archival originals. Today, Magical Racing Tour lives on as a rare historical record of the original Test Track’s queue music in all its banging, clanging glory. Fair warning: the menu music is an endless loop of “It’s A Small World,” though it is graciously instrumental. Wherever licensing or a lack of recognizable themes precluded authenticity, most noticeably on Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and Blizzard Beach, Crystal Dynamics substituted songs from past titles like Gex: Enter the Gecko that work just fine.

Disney veterans should already recognize some of the geography. The Haunted Mansion track follows the Magic Kingdom layout all the way down to the entrance awning, minus the later interactive queue. The exit stairs for the Tomorrowland Speedway hide boosters at the top. If you haven’t launched your snowmobile off Summit Plummet after the first lap, then you have to try harder to find its hidden entrance.

A common criticism of Mickey’s Speedway USA is that it’s not an especially challenging game.

By contrast, Walt Disney World Quest: Magical Racing Tour is ruthless. The AI is always out for blood. On the later, harder tracks, shortcuts are the only way to survive. Decorated drivers can theoretically unlock all the courses in one hour and the characters in two. Anyone with less experience behind the wheel should expect to see a lot of Blizzard Beach and DINOSAUR before the rest of the World opens up. For the sake of this article, I went back to play my copy and spent an hour grinding through the first round of courses alone.

При повышении частоты возрастает нагрев видеокарты. Если температура переходит отметку в 85 градусов, то следует увеличить скорость оборотов вентиляторов («Fan Speed»). Если температура повысилась до 100 градусов, то следует немедленно прекратить разгон, иначе чип может расплавиться. Мощный «разгон» требует водяного охлаждения, поэтому не следует повышать частоты более чем на 10%.

Разогнать процессор

В то время как «разгон» видеокарты вполне осуществим прямо в Windows, для того, чтобы улучшить работу процессора и тем самым увеличить быстродействие Walt Disney World Quest Magical Racing Tour, придется лезть в «Биос».

Чтобы изменить коэффициент Core Ratio, нужно сначала попасть в оболочку BIOS. Для этого нужно нажать особое сочетание клавиш во время загрузки компьютера (до того, как появится экран Windows).

Сочетание может различаться в зависимости от материнской платы. Часто BIOS можно вызвать с помощью клавиши «F8» или «Del». На экране «Биоса» нужно найти раздел, посвященный процессору. Тут тоже все сложно, так как оболочек у BIOS много. Практически каждый производитель материнский плат использует свою собственную, поэтому без знания английского языка найти нужное место не так-то просто.

Изменять множитель нужно постепенно, повышая его на 2. После каждого изменения следует перезапускать компьютер и тщательно проверять работоспособность и температуру процессора. Если она становится выше 80 градусов во время игры, то нужно немедленно выключить Walt Disney World Quest Magical Racing Tour, перезагрузить компьютер, зайти в BIOS и снизить значение Core Ratio. Disney World Magical Racing Tour

Can’t afford to go to Disney World? Get a good look anyways with our hands-on impresions of MRT!

I guess old habits die hard. Anoop has his thumb-sucking cartoon vigils, Colin still swears by his all-night conversations with his VMU and apparently, a lengthy sit-down with Eidos Dreamcast port of Disney World Magical Racing Tour has somewhat embarrassingly clued me in to the fact that I am still a cutesy character loving, happy music dancing, unabashed kart-racing fanatic.

Obviously, we’re looking at a license, a port of a PlayStation game, and a company that seems hell-bent on shoving their worst wears on an unsuspecting Dreamcast fanbase as quickly as possible (More Soul Reaver, less Tomb Raider!!), so a host of red flags were doing their best impression of Tom Cruise’s hair in a slow-mo M:I-2 clip prior to popping this puppy in my system, but much to my surprise, it ain’t half-bad, kids.

I say «half» because there is one thing that keeps it from being a really good little clone: the frame-rate. I am not sure why the idea of a sub-par clip being acceptable has been popping in to the minds of fine producers of kids games everywhere, but for some reason, it keeps happening. This visually simplistic game simply stutters along at sub 5 FPS at the most unlikely, unstrained times and ruins an otherwise coherent racing experience, and it really peeves me.

Primarily because there is a lot to like about this game. Featuring a host of red-headed step characters from the Disney Dungeon such as Chip, Dale, Jiminy Cricket and others (no favs such as Mickey, Donald, or Pluto, however. bummer) you take to the track with a wide variety of vehicles that change depending on the environment. As we mentioned earlier, the tracks are patterned after famous rides form Disney theme parks, and though they don’t seem to make much of a functional difference in gameplay, it is still kind of cool to take a boat through the jungle ride, then hop into snowmobile for the mountain track, and into a hotrod for the rock n’ roll themed ride. Pretty sweet stuff.

As for the themes themselves, I was really impressed with how well these come off, though I still can’t believe the Dreamcast is having any trouble pushing the simple, cartoon-esque environments, which are strikingly similar to their PlayStation predecessor. Each track has a host of «events» scripted in, from top-popping buildings full of TNT in the old west track to a load of lizards in the Dinosaur ride and they also can feature cool shortcuts depending on the track. As far as visual effect go, however, the only difference here seems to be a few sprinkled particle effects and some intensified colored lighting. Outside that, about the only major change we can see is an upped resolution and higher quality textures from the PSX original, and considering the possibilities, we’re hoping Eidos finds time to tweak this puppy prior to release.

Visuals aside, the game’s control is on point, though I am a bit surprised at Eidos’ departure from the standard analog break-and-gas set-up. Thankfully, though, a cool power-up system quickly made me forget about this programming sin. As you race, you pick up coins that afford you new random power-ups, which borrow heavily from the likes of Mario Kart, though there are a few cool new Disney-themed items. Cast a spell that turns everyone else to frogs. Drop atea cup landmine that is sure to send opponets spinning. Yeah, it’s a bit hokey, but this is a kids game.

On top of that, you pick up these weird green swirly things that increase you’re racer’s luck, which not only effects your opponents performace, but can help you get the best weapons down the stretch, which can be crucial in turning away an eager racer.

And these guys certainly are totally up for giving you a good run. The game is pretty easy at this stage, but by the same token, races manage to seem competitive and fair, skipping on the typical rubber-band tactics and weapon favoritism typically found in games of this type. After just a few laps, I was on the edge of my chair, telling that bastard Dale exactly where to stick his acorn bombs after a well-placed shot, and this can’t be anything but a good sign in my book.

We’re still waiting to get a crack at the multi-player component of the game, but will have to wait until Samba-mania has died down in the office to get you guys a better look, but rest assured that we’ll be back with a new look at this addictive little racer a bit closer to the game’s release in June. ‘Till then, check out the new media we’ve put together, and start looking for your mouse ears!

If you’ve been to Disney World before, you know you have had the same common thought as everyone else. At some point during your vacation, you have been caught saying, «I wish I could race around this place in a car and shoot nuts at other people». Admit it, you have.

Please admit it jokingly though, as the only way you have ever thought that is if you rank on the list of insane people in this world. Let’s face it. if your real-life goal is to fling acorns at other guests in the happiest place on earth, you belong in the nuttiest place on earth (no pun intended). If you’ve ever thought the previously mentioned idea in reference to what would make a cool video game, then not only are you perfectly sane, but you are also perfect for Eidos’ upcoming Dreamcast title Walt Disney World¿ Quest ¿ Magical Racing Tour.

Already released for the Playstation game console, Magical Racing Tour is on its way to the Sega Dreamcast. The game is being developed by Crystal Dynamics, a company that can go on record as having produced the only worthwhile 3DO game ever: Gex. MRT for the Dreamcast will feature all the trademark Disney characters and sounds as the Playstation version, but will feature them in much more vivid colors and with sharper graphics.

For those who are unaware of what Walt Disney World¿ Quest ¿ Magical Racing Touris, it can best be summarized in two words: Mario Kart. Replace the trademark Nintendo characters with Disney ones, swap the turtle shells and bananas with acorns and teacups and alter the locations from areas such as Koopa Castle to Space Mountain, and you have Magical Racing Tour in a nutshell (again, no pun intended). To classify MRT solely as a classic title with exchanged ideas severely downplays the enjoyment that Eidos’ latest is capable of providing. While is shares a lot of similarities, it has some varieties on the norm to make it truly a game on its own.

First off, Walt Disney World¿ Quest ¿ Magical Racing Tour actually features a real story that provides a reason for all the racing action. Everyone knows that every single night, Walt Disney World¿ is lit up in a gorgeous display of fireworks. All these pyrotechnics come from a single machine, which is creatively entitled the «Fireworks Machine». Well one day, our chipmunk friends Chip and Dale set out to find this contraption. Once they locate it Dale, moronically, drops his nuts into the machine (acorns, that is). This causes the Fireworks Machine to grind and explode into many pieces, which get scattered around various areas in the Disney World¿ theme park. Knowing that they have screwed up royally, the two little mammals set out to collect all the pieces before that night’s pyrotechnics display. Chip (the black-nosed one) realizes that the two of them possibly can’t run around and get all the pieces themselves, so he decides that they must use little cars and recruit some friends in order to expedite the process.

You can select from thirteen racers in Magical Racing Tour. Along with Chip and Dale, the only other recognizable character is Jiminy Cricket, leaving ten original racers that will be used in the game. These characters range from Bruno Biggs, the obsessive Mickey Mouse fan, to Tiara Dam¿ge, a thirteen year old duck that loves to dress up as the Disney Villains. Other characters follow the same pattern; they basically all serve as advertisements for what Walt Disney World¿ has to offer. All of these racers have their own speed and style, so it is up to you to pick your favorite and chase down those Fireworks Machine’s pieces.

That hunting takes place in thirteen different tracks, all based off of an area of the Walt Disney World¿ resort. Magical Racing Tour‘s courses represent the following attractions:

All of these courses are interactive in some form, and your character’s vehicle will be altered for each course. For example, on the Blizzard Beach track you will don a snowmobile, and on the Splash Mountain course you will race inside one of the attraction’s logs. Each course will feature shortcuts that must be unlocked and powerups out the wazoo. Eidos also mentions the fact that there will be hidden courses in Magical Racing Tour, so the aspect of variety is definitely covered in this game.

About those «powerups out the wazoo», expect many variances on the Mario Kart type of weaponry. Acorns can be hurled at other cars, rocket boosts an be used to speed your character up, and there is even a weapon called the «Frog Spell» that transforms all your opponents into the hopping little creatures (which you can squash if you want). All these items are gathered by driving through balloons on the courses.

Walt Disney World Quest¿ ¿ Magical Racing Tour is set to be a four player racing festival for the Dreamcast. The added bonus of racing along to some classic Disney tunes only adds to the overall enjoyment that Eidos’ latest should provide. Disney-inspired titles are normally always fun for gamers from every age group, and Magical Racing Tour is looking as if it won’t break that trend.

Rare stole away Mickey, but Eidos’ may have the last smile with its Disney Kart racer.

And yet, could this be a Kart game that controls well? Now that’s not something you see everyday. but I do.

If you picked up on that joke as one of the many zingers thrown off on The Jungle Cruise ride at Disneyland, this game is perfect for you. Eidos’ Disney Magical Racing Tour may not be a great innovation for videogaming, but as a tour that races through some of the most memorable attractions found in the Magic Kingdom, this game earns a spot in my heart purely for sentimental value. The developers at Crystal Dynamics have nailed every landmark and visual flair of Disney World, while rearranging and enhancing each ride to make for a fast, fun game.

Gameplay
Did you know that, somewhere deep in the heart of Disney World, is a spectacular device called the Fireworks Machine that sprays glorious rockets, explosions, and sparklers into the air every night at the end of each Disney day? Neither did I, until I heard that Chip and his bumbling partner Dale accidentally ruined the machine by dropping acorns into it. It blew up into dozens of pieces, and now it’s up to Chip ‘n Dale to pick up those pieces and rebuild the machine before the night’s show. Guess how they’re going to get that done? Yep, they’ve decided to hold a Walt Disney World Quest Magical Racing Tour to collect all the strewn mechanisms and doo-dads!

OK, it’s not exactly biblical storytelling. Why this Magical Racing Tour is taking place never really makes sense (and why are there 11 other racers competing against Chip ‘n Dale? Why is it that they must hurry before night settles and the firework show begins, yet time never passes in this game and several attractions are set at night? Where’s Mickey and the rest of the gang? Yeah, and what about Scarecrow’s brain?)

None of that really matters here (although, being a Disney product, you would have expected the story to be rock-solid). The focus of Disney Magical Racing Tour is racing, or rather Disney racing. What’s the difference, you ask? In this game, a huge part of the fun comes from the all the detailed work that went into the course design and Disneyesque gameplay. For instance, instead of Banana Peels (or more like the Oil Slicks in Nascar Rumble), players drop Tea Cups that spin your opponent wildly as they’re driving, trapping them in those crazy cups and making them dizzy for a good while. Riding in a real Tea Cup down the street is the dream of every Mouseketeer, and that’s finally possible in this game.

It’s the track design that just grabs hold of you. Crystal Dynamics has faithfully brought 13 of the most popular Disney attractions to life (they include Space Mountain, Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Jungle Cruise, Tomorrowland Speedway, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Disney’s Blizzard Beach, Rock ‘n Roller Coaster (at Disney-MGM Studios), the Disney Studios, Test Track (at Epcot), Typhoon Lagoon, the new Animal Kingdom ride for Dinosaur, and Splash Mountain). Each is a near replica of the true ride, but it’s now all controllable for gamers who always wanted to freely roam in this amusement park. Remember the opening climb of Space Mountain, where you are being shot through a portal of light and color into outer space? That same experience is here, only this time you are driving that rocket ship, running over dozens of Zippers to boost speed for your final ascension into space!

Generally, the courses are not perfect recreations of the rides. The models used in the tracks are not millimeter-by-millimeter mock-ups. Rather, they are stylized versions of Disney World’s attractions, built for speed and fun while retaining the bliss of riding these classic rides. The Haunted Mansion race begins outside the mansion doors, where you break into the doors and storm through twisting halls, up gothic staircases, and through mysterious curtains that reveal hidden shortcuts. It’s like the real thing, just redone for a game (even the mirror ghosts are there at the end of each lap).

My only complaint would be that this game may be too hard for its target audience. The challenge is set so high (and without a setting for difficulty) that little kids and even their parents will have a hard time finishing the Adventure mode. It’s still fun to play around, but placing first is just too hard!

As always, the vast charm of this game is the Disney license. Racing through Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and spotting all the hidden Mickeys (those landmarks that just happen to be shaped like a pair of mouse ears) is great fun. Crystal Dynamics has also brought the stages to life, animating every mile of the track. Animatronic dinosaurs growl at your driver as you zoom past, while surly pirates carry on with their looting while the race rages behind them. You may even spot Bubbles the hippo in the Jungle Cruise (however, I haven’t seen the backside of water yet, and that’s a real heartbreaker for me!)

We being strict critics, however, I must point out that the game is a little ragged looking. Sometimes the visuals are breathtaking (and always enchanting due to the Disney theme), but other times the graphic engine is running on empty. The main textures are fair throughout, but the resolution is very low for the sake of speed. Also, the special effect animated textures (which are used to enliven the game even more when there are no creatures on screen) are just awful. At the beginning of Dinosaur, you begin in a time tunnel and leap out into the past. However, the effect is done with just two-frame cycling textures. Passing through the time continuum seems like a polygon error. Had Crystal Dynamics added a screen-warping effect, it would have worked, but here it just looks like a placeholder graphic. Weak effects and other problems are sloppy, but the overall style more than makes up for it.

Sound
The best part of this game is the authentic version of the Grim Grinning Ghosts theme played in the Haunted Mansion track. Hands down, that’s reason enough to buy this game for many Disney fans. Eidos has licensed the tracks of Disney World’s rides and incorporated them into the game, making every race a trip down Memory Lane. If the songs had been included in Redbook audio, this would have been a must-own for any Disney fan, since these tunes have rarely been heard outside of the park, and the few exclusive records and CDs released with the tracks are hard to come by.
