At the 2026 edition, the first round, the group stage, consists of sixteen groups of three countries. This already makes up 48 matches on the schedule. The knockout stage starts with the round of 32 (the 16th finals).
2026 World Cup host cities and stadiums: from 22 to 16
The 2026 FIFA World Cup has sixteen host cities (and stadiums). These are divided out as follows: 11 World Cup cities in the United States, 2 World Cup cities in Canada as well as 3 World Cup cities in Mexico. In July 2021, Montreal (Canada) withdrew as a contender. There are currently 22 candidate FIFA World Cup 2026 host cities, of which seventeen are located in the United States; probably seven of them will drop out in the course of Q1 / Q2 2022. The outcome of the selection process will be April rather than March, FIFA states. These dates, as a consequence of the postponed FIFA visits to the cities, have been delayed due to the Covid pandemic.

Soccer World Championship North America
The FIFA World Cup takes place every four years, with France being the reigning world champion (2018). In 2022, a new football world champion will be crowned in Qatar, who will then kick off the qualifying series of the 2026 World Cup in North America as a titleholder. The 23rd FIFA World Cup will celebrate its 96th anniversary in 2026.
2026 FIFA World Cup
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the 23rd FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial international men’s football championship contested by the national teams of the member associations of FIFA. The tournament will be jointly hosted by 16 cities in three North American countries; 60 matches, including the quarterfinals, semi-finals, and the final, will be hosted by the United States, while neighboring Canada and Mexico will each host 10 matches. The tournament will be the first hosted by three nations.
The United 2026 bid beat a rival bid by Morocco during a final vote at the 68th FIFA Congress in Moscow. It will be the first World Cup since South Korea/Japan in 2002 that will be hosted by more than one nation. With its past hosting of the 1970 and 1986 tournaments, Mexico will also become the first country to host all or part of three men’s World Cups.
The 2026 World Cup will also see the tournament expanded from 32 to 48 teams.
Contents
Format
Then-UEFA head Michel Platini had suggested in Jaunary 2015 an expansion of the tournament to 40 teams.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced that he backed an expansion of the tournament to 48 national teams, including that of the host nation. This new format of the finals, raised from the previous 32 team format, was announced 4 October 2016. Infantino stated that the planned format of 40 teams in groups of four or five teams and his proposed 48-team format are on the table.
Expansion concerns
The proposal for expansion has been challenged by the European Clubs Association and its member clubs, citing a lack of consultation. For German national team coach Joachim Löw, he warned that expansion, as it was done for Euro 2016, will dilute the value of the world tournament because players have already reached their physical and mental limit.
The decision on the number of teams, formats and the eligibility of confederations to bid was expected for October 2016, however in that month the number of teams was set at 48. There are five options for the 2026 tournament:
Host selection
The FIFA Executive Committee (now the FIFA Council) decided on 30 May 2015 that any country could bid for a World Cup provided that their continental confederation had not hosted the preceding World Cup. For the 2026 World Cup, this meant that bids from the Asian Football Confederation (which is to host the 2022 World Cup in Qatar) would not be allowed. Later, in October 2016, the FIFA Council approved the general principle that member associations from continental confederations of the last two hosts of the FIFA World Cup (i.e. the AFC and UEFA, the latter being due to host the 2018 World Cup in Russia) will be ineligible to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup; however, the FIFA Council will have the power to grant eligibility to member associations of the confederation of the second-to-last host of the FIFA World Cup (i.e. UEFA) and open the bidding process to any interested MAs from this confederation in the event that none of the received bids fulfil the strict technical and financial requirements.
It was also approved that co-hosting of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be permitted, not limited to a specific number, but evaluated on a case-by-case basis, and that for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the FIFA general secretariat, after consultation with the Competitions Committee, will have the power to exclude bidders who do not meet the minimum technical requirements to host the competition. Joint bids had been banned by FIFA after the 2002 World Cup.
Therefore, the 2026 World Cup will be hosted by one of the remaining four confederations: CONCACAF (last hosted in 1994), CAF (last hosted in 2010), CONMEBOL (last hosted in 2014), or OFC (never hosted before), or potentially by UEFA in case no bid from those four meets the requirements.
Under the initial decision, there would be a change from FIFA’s previous policy, which applied for the 2018 and 2022 bidding process, and allowed any country to bid provided that its confederation had not hosted either of the previous two World Cups. However, the revised decision effectively means that this policy remains the same, except for the chance for potential eligibility of the second-to-last hosting confederation.
Candidate cities and venues
During the bidding process, there were 49 venues in 43 cities contacted to be part of the bid. 41 cities with 45 venues responded and submitted to be part of the bid (3 venues in 3 cities in Mexico, 9 venues in 7 cities in Canada and 38 venues in 34 cities in the United States). A first round elimination cut 9 venues and 9 cities, then a second round elimination cut an additional 9 venues in 6 cities while 3 venues in 3 cities dropped out due to FIFA’s unwillingness to discuss financial details, reducing the total number to 23 venues, each in their own city or metropolitan area. The 23 candidate cities and venues will be narrowed down to 16 in June 2020 (2 in Canada, 3 in Mexico, and 10 in the United States):

Broadcasting rights
On February 12, 2015, Fox, Telemundo, and Bell Media’s rights to the tournament were renewed by FIFA to cover 2026, without accepting any other bids. The New York Times believed that this extension was intended as compensation for the rescheduling of the 2022 World Cup to November–December rather than its traditional June–July scheduling, which falls during the heart of the National Football League season (where Fox is currently a main U.S. rightsholder), and the beginning of the National Basketball Association and National Hockey League seasons.

2026 WORLD CUP FOOTBALL
The 2026 World Cup match schedule in North America begins with a record number of groups. The unique number of no less than 48 countries qualifying for the global final round are divided into sixteen groups in the group stage. Each group will therefore consist of three countries. The sixteen groups are designated A to P at the final round of the World Cup Football. In each group, the two countries that end at the top in a round-robin tournament advance to the knockout stage. This follow-up stage counts 16 times 2 = 32 national teams and therefore starts with the round of 32: a first in World Cup soccer history.
The numbers three of the sixteen groups say their farewells to the tournament. As mentioned, not only the amount of teams, but also the schedule with the round of 32 is a first: in the past, the World Cup schedule would proceed to the round of 16 after the first round.
Three countries per group
A unique feature of the group structure during the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico is, firstly, the three countries per group. In previous editions of the FIFA World Cup, there were always four.
Group stage matches: no ties, direct decision
Secondly, the new format results in the unique fact that a group match cannot end in a tie. If the score is still tied after 90 minutes of play, penalty kicks will immediately follow to decide the match (without playing an extension first).
Nine days between nations first matches
Another consequence of the record number of 48 participants is that there are nine days between the dates on which the first and last countries first enter a match.
Knock out system starts with round of 32
For the remainder of the tournament, the schedule will continue according to the traditional knockout system. The round of 32, the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and final consist of one match. In case of a tie at the end of the regular match time, two 15-minute extensions will follow. If this does not yield a winner, it will go to penalties.
1+1+2+4+8+16+48=80 matches
A total of 80 matches are scheduled for the World Cup in North America. Previously, there were a maximum of 64 matches. The eighty matches in the 2026 World Cup are divided into 48 group matches (in groups A to P) + 16 x round of 32 + 8 x 8th finals + 4 x quarterfinals + 2 x semifinals + 1 match for third place and, of course, the World Cup Final.
Subdivision matches in USA, Canada, Mexico
During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, there will be three round-robin matches in the group stage in one day, according to what the organization envisions. The schedule is currently still in draft form and is therefore still partly subject to change. The winning BID United of the host countries, the USA, Canada and Mexico, includes a subdivision of 60 matches in the United States, 10 matches in Canada, and 10 matches in Mexico. In the BID, it has been proposed that 7 group matches, 2 round of 32 and one round of 16 will take place in both Canada and Mexico. This ‘results’ in 34 group matches, 12 round of 32, 6 round of 16, 4 quarterfinals, both semifinals, the third-place playoff, and the final match being played in the US.
World Cup 2026: kick-off times in four time zones
The kick-off times for the 80 World Cup matches in 2026 are still to be determined. There are four different time zones in the North American (candidate) host cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The start times will only be confirmed after the announcement of the final World Cup host cities.
Opening match, semifinals and final 2026 World Cup North America: where?
The final of the 2026 World Cup in North America will be played in New York/New Jersey at the MetLife Stadium, though is subject to change. The opening match will be in Los Angeles (Rose Bowl) or Mexico City (Azteca Stadium). The semifinals have also been mentioned in the BID United: those will be played in Atlanta (Mercedes-Benz Stadium) and Dallas (AT&T Stadium). The other host cities and matches are still to be assigned: the list of 23 candidate host cities will eventually be reduced to 16.
Schedule qualifiers
The FIFA countries in six continental zones will distribute the 48 starting certificates by playing qualification matches in the period 2023 – 2025.
2026 WORLD CUP FOOTBALL
These are the most important things you should know about the FIFA World Cup format in North America in 2026, with host countries the United States, Canada and Mexico. In a nutshell:
2026 World Cup Format | Qualifiers
A total of 210 countries that are members of the world football association, FIFA, will compete to qualify for the final round of the 2026 World Cup. There are 48 tickets to be earned. The qualification stage is divided into six zones: CONCACAF (North America, Central America, and the Caribbean), CONMEBOL (South America), UEFA (Europe), AFC (Asia), CAF (Africa) and OFC (Oceania). The format of the qualification system may vary from zone to zone. The qualification period for the 2026 World Cup runs from 2023 to 2025. The exact dates for each continental zone are pending. The distribution of the 48 tickets for the qualifying countries is as follows: Europe is entitled to 16 tickets; Africa can send 9 countries to the World Cup; Asia has 8 representatives; South America gets 6 tickets; North America, Central America and the Caribbean also get 6 tickets; and Oceania has one country that is allowed to compete for the soccer world cup title in the summer of 2026. That makes a total of 46. The other 2 countries qualify through a mini tournament in November 2025. Read more: Format qualifiers FIFA World Cup North America.
World Cup North America finals
The 2026 World Cup format for the finals consists of a group stage, followed by knockout matches in the round of 32, the round of 16, quarterfinals, and the semifinals leading up to the final. There is also the match for third and fourth place: the third-place playoff. The group stage consists of sixteen World Cup groups of three countries each. Each country will compete in a round-robin tournament against the other two countries in their group. As a first in World Cup football history, a winner must emerge from every group match, just like in the knockout stage. Unlike the matches played from the round of 32 onwards, there is no extension in case of a tie and the match proceeds directly to a penalty-kick tiebreaker. After the group stage, 32 of the 48 original countries remain. Read more: Format finals FIFA World Cup North America.

2026 FIFA World CupFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

They contended that it was a decision taken for political reasons because Infantino would thus satisfy his electorate, rather than for sporting reasons. Liga de Fútbol Profesional president Javier Tebas agreed, asserting the unacceptability of the new format. He told Marca that the football industry is maintained thanks to clubs and leagues, not FIFA, and that Infantino did politics because to be elected he promised more countries in the World Cup; he wanted to keep the electoral promises. German national team coach Joachim Löw warned that expansion, as had occurred for Euro 2016, would dilute the value of the world tournament because players have already reached their physical and mental limit. Another criticism of the new format is that with three-team groups, the risk of collusion between the two teams playing in the last round of the group stage will increase compared with four-team groups (where simultaneous kick-offs have been employed). One suggestion by president Infantino is that group matches that end in draws will be decided by penalty shootouts. World Cup 2026 host cities confirmed: What you need to know about the 16 venuesJerry Jones speaks to reporters regarding Dallas’ shot of hosting the World Cup Final in 2026. (1:13) After months of anticipation and years of preparation, we finally have our 16 host cities and venues for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. The major takeaways: 11 U.S. cities were selected from the candidate pool, with three cities in Mexico and two Canadian cities joining the fray as well. United States: New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, Boston, Atlanta, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Kansas City, Seattle, San Francisco/Bay Area and Los Angeles Canada: Vancouver, Toronto Mexico: Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey The tournament was awarded to the North American and CONCACAF rivals four years ago, fending off a strong bid from Morocco, and will be a notable competition for several reasons. It will be the first World Cup hosted by more than one nation since 2002, when Japan and South Korea shared the honors, and it’ll be the first World Cup with three hosts. Mexico will make history as the first nation to host or co-host for a third time (following 1970 and 1986), the U.S. will be second-time hosts (following 1994), and it will be Canada’s first time hosting the men’s tournament, having been the site of the Women’s World Cup in 2015. Furthermore, it will be the first World Cup to boast 48 qualified teams following FIFA’s vote in 2017 to expand the field from 32 sides, which had been the standard since France 1998. In this new format, 16 groups of three teams will compete with the top two teams from each group advancing to a Round of 32, which will be single elimination all the way through to the final. Here’s everything you need to know about the chosen venues. Venues in the United StatesThere are 11 host cities in the United States for 2026, responsible for hosting 60 games including the quarterfinals, semifinals and final: Seattle, the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium were all chosen to represent the WEST region. In the CENTRAL region, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta and Kansas City were all selected. In the EAST, Boston, New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia and Miami completed the U.S. contingent of cities for the 2026 World Cup. The U.S. cities that were not selected: Los Angeles’ Rose Bowl, Nashville, Cincinnati, Baltimore/Washington, Orlando and Denver. Venue: Lumen Field, 800 Occidental Ave. S, Seattle, WA 98134 Capacity: 69,000 (forecasted 61,812 for the World Cup) When did it open: 2002 Field of play dimensions: 105 meters x 68 meters Pro teams that play here: Seattle Seahawks (NFL), Seattle Sounders (MLS), OL Reign (NWSL) Round of World Cup games proposed in bid: Quarterfinal, third-place game Despite being built for the Seattle Seahawks, Lumen Field already has a reputation as one of the best and loudest soccer venues in the U.S. thanks to the exceptional support of the Seattle Sounders. The MLS side has only seen its status as the best-attended team in the league threatened during recent years of expansion, though Lumen Field continues to remain one of the most boisterous and best-attended stadiums in MLS. The open-air stadium has a partial roof that covers 70% of seats and traps in noise. Lumen Field is close to downtown and easy to get to, walkable from Amtrak’s King Street Station and stops along Seattle’s Sound Transit rail system. A trip from the stadium to Seattle’s famous Pike Place Market is only about 20 minutes by public transportation, 26 minutes on foot and 10 minutes by car (if traffic isn’t too bad). Major events hosted here: The venue has already hosted some high-profile soccer matches, including during the 2016 Copa America Centenario and several CONCACAF Gold Cups. Friendlies hosted include for the U.S. national teams, Mexico, Brazil, Manchester United, Barcelona, Club America and others. SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA (Santa Clara, California) Venue: Levi’s Stadium, 4900 Marie P. DeBartolo Way, Santa Clara, CA 95054 When did it open: 2014 Field dimensions: 105 meters x 68 meters Pro teams that play here: San Francisco 49ers (NFL) Round of World Cup games proposed in bid: Semifinal LOS ANGELES (Inglewood, California) Venue: SoFi Stadium, 1001 Stadium Dr., Inglewood, CA 90301 When did it open: 2021 Field of play dimensions: TBD Pro teams that play here: Los Angeles Rams (NFL), Los Angeles Chargers (NFL) Round of World Cup games proposed in bid: N/A SoFi will host its first soccer matches on Aug. 3 with a MLS-Liga MX doubleheader that will pit Chivas against LA Galaxy and Club America against LAFC. Major events hosted here: Is the Super Bowl major enough? SoFi hosted the first flagship NFL game in the L.A.-area since 1993 and has staged several major concerts since opening last year, with Justin Bieber, The Rolling Stones, BTS and Paul McCartney all making stops. Beyond that, we’re still waiting for its major events on the horizon: SoFi will host the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship on Jan. 9, Wrestlemania 39 in April, and the opening/closing ceremonies of the 2028 Summer Olympics. DALLAS (Arlington, Texas) Venue Name:AT&T Stadium, 1 AT&T Way, Arlington, TX 76011 When did it open: 2009 Field of play dimensions: 105 meters x 68 meters Pro teams that play here: Dallas Cowboys (NFL) Round of World Cup games proposed in bid: Semifinal, final With its distinctive retractable roof (and its dubious glare-inducing windows), the home of the Cowboys has always packed plenty of shine and star power since opening in 2009. It hosted Super Bowl XIV in 2011 between the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers, which remains second-most-attended NFL title game with over 103,000 spectators. There have been reports that the field will have to be somehow widened for World Cup matches, and like many of the U.S.-based stadiums, it will need grass installed over the turf to satisfy FIFA requirements. Major events hosted here: From an NBA All-Star Game to an NCAA Final Four to record-breaking boxing bouts featuring Saul «Canelo» Alvarez, the place has become a go-to spot for sporting events. As for soccer, both Mexico and the USMNT have played there on several occasions, and European clubs such as Chelsea and Barcelona also held friendlies there. Venue: NRG Stadium, 1 NRG Parkway, Houston, TX 77054 When did it open: 2002 Field of play dimensions: 105 meters x 68 meters Pro teams that play here: Houston Texans (NFL) Round of World Cup games proposed in bid: Quarterfinal, third-place match It’s safe to say that a World Cup match has yet to be played a stadium that is also home to a livestock and rodeo show, but hey it’s Texas. But the home of the Houston Texans has also seen plenty of soccer (plus two of Tom Brady’s Super Bowl wins with the New England Patriots) since opening in 2002. Major events hosted here: NRG Stadium has put on a show for two Super Bowls (including the Patriots’ remarkable comeback vs. the Falcons in 2017), myriad Gold Cup matches (2005-2011), the 2010 MLS All-Star Game and even three games of the 2016 Copa America Centenario: When Argentina beat the USMNT 4-0, it was notable for Lionel Messi notching the goal that made him his nation’s all-time leading scorer. Mexico has played here numerous times, Lionel Messi become Argentina’s all-time goal scorer in a 4-0 drubbing of the USMNT at the 2016 Copa America Centenario, and the only Manchester City-Manchester United derby outside of England was held here in 2017. Bayern Munich thrashed Real Madrid (2019) as part of the International Champions Cup. Venue: Arrowhead Stadium, One Arrowhead Drive, Kansas City, MO 64129 When did it open: 1972 Field of play dimensions: 105 meters x 68 meters Pro teams that play here: Kansas City Chiefs (NFL) Round of World Cup games proposed in bid: Quarterfinal, third-round game Kansas City sits firmly in the American midwest and is a hub for a lot of things: it was the start of pioneering trails west to Oregon, California and Santa Fe, and it was a place that ignored the prohibition laws of the 1920s to become a top city for jazz and entertainment. The sports teams aren’t bad, either: the KC Royals won the baseball World Series in 2015, while the NFL’s Chiefs have won back-to-back AFC Championships (2019, 2020) and the 2019 Super Bowl thanks to the play of quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The city’s MLS team, Sporting Kansas City, were a founding member of the league back in 1996 and boast two MLS Cups (2000, 2013) and four U.S. Open Cups. Major events hosted here: This stadium is no stranger to soccer. In addition to hosting World Cup qualifiers for the USMNT over the years, it has also hosted the likes of the U.S. Open Cup final (2004) and was the home for Sporting Kansas City (1996-2008), back when they were still known as the Kansas City Wizards. Believe it or not, Arrowhead also holds a world record: The Guinness World Records still holds the venue as the loudest-ever stadium, with a sound level of 142.2 dB recorded during the Chiefs’ 42-14 win over the New England Patriots on Sept. 29, 2014. Venue: Mercedes-Benz Stadium, 1 AMB Drive NW, Atlanta, GA 30313 Capacity: 75,000 (forecasted 65,085 for the World Cup) When did it open: 2017 Field of play dimensions: 105 meters x 68 meters Pro teams that play here: Atlanta United (MLS), Atlanta Falcons (NFL) Round of World Cup games proposed in bid: Semifinal As one of the newer venues on this list, Mercedes-Benz Stadium has a modern feel and plenty of amenities. The innovative «video halo board» provides 360 degrees of viewing angles and is the largest stadium video display in the world. With another world-topping 2,000-plus TV screens and 1,800 wireless access points, Mercedes-Benz Stadium has technology built into its design. But with transparent materials around much of the stadium’s exterior, including the 22,664-square-foot «Window to the City,» the outside world doesn’t feel too far away. Mercedes-Benz Stadium is one of the largest home stadiums for an MLS club, but that hasn’t dampened the atmosphere at games for Atlanta United, a team that drew an average of more than 50,000 before the pandemic and continues top the list for average attendance in MLS. With a canopy over all the seating and a retractable roof over the field, the stadium holds in sound and buzzes with atmosphere. The 2018 MLS Cup, which Atlanta United won, is a testament to the raucous atmosphere this stadium can deliver. Major events hosted here: Where to begin? In recent years, Super Bowl 53 in 2019, the College Football Playoff National Championship in 2018 and MLS Cup 2018 are just three showpiece games inside the dome. Mercedes-Benz Stadium has also hosted the MLS All-Star Game in 2018, with the MLS team losing on penalties to Italian giants Juventus, and a handful of Mexico friendlies since 2019. It was also the place Kanye West chose to finish working on the album Donda, following a major listening event at the stadium in July, 2021. (He also took in the sights of an Atlanta United game while taking a break from work.) MIAMI (Miami Gardens, Florida) Venue: Hard Rock Stadium, 347 Don Shula Drive, Miami Gardens, FL 33056 When did it open: 1987 Field of play dimensions: 105 m x 68 m Teams that play here: Miami Dolphins (NFL), University of Miami, hosts of the annual Orange Bowl Round of World Cup games proposed in bid: Quarterfinal Miami’s diverse, rich history has a lot to do with soccer, with the «Magic City» having a team in virtually every pro soccer league that’s popped up in the U.S., starting with the North American Soccer League (NASL) in the 1960s through to Major League Soccer in the 2020s with the arrival of David Beckham’s Inter Miami CF (currently playing in nearby Ft. Lauderdale). Major events hosted here: The city is no stranger to major events in several sports. Hard Rock Stadium hosted a Clasico between LaLiga powerhouses Real Madrid and Barcelona in 2017, as well as the NFL’s Super Bowl (hosting six times), the NFL’s Pro Bowl (2010) and several college football national championship games since 2001. In 2022, it hosted F1’s inaugural Miami Grand Prix, with a temporary track built around the venue. Venue: Lincoln Financial Field, 1 Lincoln Financial Field Way, Philadelphia, PA 19145 When did it open: 2003 Field of play dimensions: 105 m x 68 m Pro teams that play here: Philadelphia Eagles (NFL) Round of World Cup games proposed in bid: Quarterfinal, third-place game The city of Brotherly Love is bringing the heat as a World Cup venue: Lincoln Financial Field is a multi-purpose venue that’s proven it can handle elite events. It’s also a zero-waste facility, with 11,000 solar panels and 14 micro wind-turbines to offset, and exceed, the power consumed by the stadium during a full season of Eagles games. Nine tons of food waste have been composted since 2016, as well as directing 100% of all materials away from landfills each year. NEW YORK/NEW JERSEY (East Rutherford, New Jersey) Venue: MetLife Stadium, One MetLife Stadium Dr, East Rutherford, NJ 07073 When did it open: 2010 Field of play dimensions: 105 meters x 68 meters Pro teams that play here: New York Giants (NFL), New York Jets (NFL) Round of World Cup games proposed in bid: Opening game, final MetLife is only 12 years old, but it already has considerable experience hosting world-class soccer games. The United States, Argentina, Brazil, Portugal, the Republic of Ireland, Mexico, Ecuador and Colombia have all played friendlies there, and the International Champions Cup, the Gold Cup and the Copa America Centenario all held games there as well. The Copa held its semifinals and final at the Meadowlands, and the 82,026-strong crowd at the final of the 2016 tournament become the best attended in the competition’s history. Despite its address in New Jersey, MetLife is easily reachable from the heart of New York City: A bus ride from the Port Authority in midtown Manhattan will take 40 to 50 minutes. That convenience helps to explain why the stadium hosts 50 large events every year, seeing more than two million people come through the turnstiles annually. Major events hosted here: The stadium has seen a lot since its first-ever event, the lacrosse Big City Classic, back in April 2010. As well as being the home of the Jets and Giants, it’s hosted XFL games (New York Guardians vs. Tampa Bay Vipers), the 2014 Super Bowl, two Wrestlemanias (2013, 2019) and a ton of international soccer: Mexico vs. Ecuador was the first in 2010, but the 2016 Copa America Centenario final was a particularly notorious affair as Lionel Messi opted to retire from Argentina duty following defeat to Chile on penalties. (Don’t worry, he returned not long after.) BOSTON (Foxborough, Massachusetts) Venue: Gillette Stadium, 1 Patriot Place, Foxborough, MA 02035 When did it open: 2002 Field of play dimensions: 105 meters x 68 meters Pro teams that play here: New England Revolution (MLS), New England Patriots (NFL) Round of World Cup games proposed in bid: Semifinal Now in its 20th year, Gillette lacks much of the glitz and modernity of many other stadiums hosting a match in 2026, but it underwent network renovations in 2016 to improve Wi-Fi availability and its food and drink offerings on main concourses are undergoing revamps to ensure fans’ appetites are as satisfied as they are at stadiums increasingly offering gourmet bites. The Revolution averaged just 18,861 in attendance last season, but the Patriots have enjoyed a sellout streak dating back to 1994 and foster one of the more atmospheric home-field advantages in the NFL. Major events hosted here: Gillette has been a long-time soccer host over its two decades of being open, and we’re not just talking about the New England Revolution. From CONCACAF Gold Cup games to Women’s World Cup games, Gillette’s been ever-present for both the men’s and women’s national teams. It’s a major East Coast tour stop for some of the world’s biggest musical acts, it’s hosted Premier League Lacrosse and more primetime NFL games (thanks to the Patriots’ remarkable success) than can be counted. Venues in MexicoAll three of the Mexico venues up for hosting were selected by FIFA in Thursday’s announcement. Venue Name: Estadio Azteca, Calz. De Tlalpan 3465, Sta. Ursula Coapa, Coyoacan, 04650 Ciudad de Mexico, Mexico When did it open: 1966 Field of play dimensions:105 m x 68 m Pro teams that play here: Mexico’s national teams, Club America, Cruz Azul Round of World Cup games proposed in bid: Opening match Just the name evokes tales of some of the sport’s biggest legends. Pele won his third and final World Cup with Brazil here in 1970. Argentina legend Diego Maradona scored his «Hand of God» goal (as well as an equally incredible solo effort dubbed as the «Goal of the Century») against England in the 1986 quarterfinals, before holding off West Germany in the thrilling final. It is the only stadium that will have the distinction of hosting matches in three men’s World Cup editions, and also served as a host of the 1971 predecessor to the Women’s World Cup. Major events hosted here: Need we say more? In addition to the above, the mighty Azteca has hosted Michael Jackson, Menudo, U2 and Shakira, as well as nine NFL games (1994-2019) with another planned for 2022 between the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals. MONTERREY (Guadalupe, Nuevo Leon) Venue Name: Estadio BBVA, Av Pablo Livas 2011, Col. La Pastora, 67140 Guadalupe, NL, Mexico When did it open: 2015 Field of play dimensions: 105 m x 68 m Pro teams that play here: Monterrey Round of World Cup games proposed in bid: Round of 16 Major events hosted here: In addition to this summer’s planned W Championship, Justin Bieber did perform here in 2017 on the Purpose World Tour. GUADALAJARA (Zapopan, Jalisco) Venue Name: Estadio Akron, Av Circuito JVC 2800, El Bajio, 45019 Zapopan, JAL, Mexico When did it open: 2010 Field of play dimensions: 105 m x 68 m Pro teams that play here: Chivas Round of World Cup games proposed in bid: Round of 16 The house that Sir Alex Ferguson and «Chicharito» debuted. In 2010, when Chivas hosted Manchester United in a summer friendly to open the venue, Javier Hernandez played the first half for the home side before ceremoniously transferring to the Premier League side for the second. Its distinct architecture harkens to a volcano covered by a ring of smoke. Mexico’s men’s national team has played here just once, but it hosted the region’s most recent men’s Olympic qualifying tournament, and provides an intimate and lively setting for arguably Liga MX’s most followed club. Major events hosted here: Despite not being a venue of choice for El Tri, it did host eight matches of the 2011 U-17 World Cup as well as serving as the opening and closing ceremony site for the 2011 Pan American Games, hosting all the soccer games in that competition to boot. VENUES IN CANADAOf the three host cities in contention for the Canadian contingent, only Edmonton was not selected by FIFA as a tournament site. Venue Name: BC Place, 777 Pacific Blvd, Vancouver, BC V6B 4Y8 When did it open: 1983 Field of play dimensions: 107m x 69m Pro teams that play here: Vancouver Whitecaps (MLS), BC Lions (CFL) Round of World Cup games proposed in bid: Round of 16 This venue has already hosted a World Cup final before: It’s where the U.S. women’s national team won the 2015 World Cup on the back of a sensational Carli Lloyd hat trick to beat Japan, 5-2. BC Place is smack dab in downtown Vancouver, walking distance from bars and restaurants that World Cup-goers will take over, and in 2015, Robson Street was a sea of red, white and blue marching toward the stadium. The surface of BC Place is infamously artificial turf, which players sued FIFA over in 2015. That’s why Vancouver did not originally vie for a hosting spot, but late in the process the British Columbia city replaced Montreal as a candidate city. To meet the requirements for the 2026 tournament, BC Place will install grass after winning its bid to host games. In about 20 minutes, the roof can be opened or closed as needed. Major events hosted here: In addition to its 2015 World Cup duties, BC Place is the annual host of the Canada Sevens (part of rugby’s World Sevens Series), was the main stadium for both the 2010 Winter Olympics and the 2011 Paralympics, and has hosted the NFL (San Francisco 49ers beat the Seattle Seahawks 24-21 in 1998). In 1987, it even put on an Australian rules football match and hosted British royalty when Prince Charles and Princess Diana attended, and officially opened, the 1986 World Expo. Venue Name: BMO Field, 170 Princes Blvd, Toronto, ON M6K 3CS Capacity: 45,500 after expansion (40,100 actual seating capacity for World Cup) When did it open: 2007 Field of play dimensions: 105 m x 68 m Pro teams that play here: Toronto FC (MLS), Toronto Argonauts (CFL) Round of World Cup games proposed in bid: Round of 16 Major events hosted here: From the Canada national rugby team to the 2016 CFL Grey Cup final, BMO Field is no stranger to live action. It’s hosted MLS Cup (2016, 2017) by virtue of Toronto FC having home-field advantage, but it was also a major site for the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup and the 2014 FIFA Women’s U-20 World Cup. 2026 WORLD CUP FOOTBALL48 countries will participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. This concerns the final round of the World Cup in the sixteen cities in the USA, Canada and Mexico. This is an expanded format, with the 48 teams contesting a total of 80 matches. At the FIFA World Cup 2018 and 2022 there were/are 32 teams competing with a total of 64 matches. For the 2026 World Cup, FIFA’s belief is: ‘bigger is better’, resulting in the mentioned 48 competitors. A first in history. The uniqueness of having 48 participants in the final round poses greater challenges for the composition of the match schedule and, for example, the minimum rest days each country must have. One of the advantages of the new 48-team format, is that there will be more matches to watch (sixteen more than at a final tournament with 32 at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar), as well as more players. Another advantage is the increased revenue from the 2026 World Cup TV and other broadcasting rights and, of course, the fact that the final tournament will be more exciting. It also means that millions of more fans can dream of ultimate World Cup success for twelve ‘extra’ countries, right up to the last few weeks and days. Number of teams World Cup 2026 qualificationThe battle to qualify will include 210 FIFA member countries. You can find more information elsewhere on this site regarding the format of the qualification for the 2026 World Cup and the distribution of the qualification groups across the six continental FIFA Zones. World cup 2026 fifaSign up to stay up to date with all the latest local developments in the build up to 2026. By submitting you agree to receive content about the World Cup and soccer in Kansas City. The world’s biggest event deserves the right stage: Kansas City is in the heart of it all – geographically and culturally. We’ve been called “underrated,” “up-and-coming,” and “the coolest city in America.” The list goes on. Roll the tape from the last decade of World Cup summers. We’re equal parts Midwestern humility and kindness, with a dash of big-city rowdy. Sports fans all over the country already know Kansas City as the “Soccer Capital of America,” AND NOW IT’S TIME TO SHOW THE WORLD. KANSAS CITY, HERE IT COMES! The FIFA World Cup is the largest and most prestigious single-sport event in the world and is followed by billions of fans all over the world. Since its inaugural tournament in 1930, the FIFA World Cup has been hosted 21 times. Occurring every 4 years, the 2026 World Cup will be the 23rd tournament and will return to the US for the 2nd time after 1994. The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be jointly hosted by up to 16 cities spread amongst America, Canada & Mexico and will be the first-ever tournament with 48 teams fighting for the title of World Champion. In 2017, Forty-one cities across the United States, Mexico and Canada submitted bids to host matches, with the selection committee ultimately trimming the list down to 23 finalists for the official bid to FIFA. The finalists included 17 cities in the US (later trimmed to 16 when Baltimore and Washington D.C. merged bids), and three each in the United States and Canada. The official 2026 World Cup Host Cities were announced to a global audience on June 16, 2022. 2026 FIFA World Cup: what to expect?Predicting what the 2026 FIFA World Cup may be like? It is, at any rate, interesting to do a projection exercise of how the global soccer tournament can become unique and unforgettable – based on what we currently know. And based on how we believe international football can develop in the next years. A careful preview of the 2026 tournament: looking at players, tactics, TV, and live streaming. Players: who will star at the World Cup in 2026?Unfortunately, for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, it is very unlikely that we can count on Lionel Messi (Argentina) or Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) due to a matter of age (they would arrive at 39 and 41 years old, respectively). Even players like Neymar (Brazil) or Kevin De Bruyne (Belgium) would be in the 34-35 years old age group, so it would be surprising if these players will participate in the 2026 North American tournament. Clubs (especially the largest ones) are currently following a trend based on signing talented young players instead of established stars. This is partly due to the high prices that had been achieved after stellar performances at clubs such as Manchester City or Paris Saint Germain; their foreign investment has allowed them to pay very high figures for some stars – too high for others. To this must be added the delicate economic situation of the world of football as a whole due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All this together puts the general national and international football focus even extra on stimulating the maturation of especially the young(est) talented players. Taking this scenario into account, we can expect national teams to have lower age averages compared to former editions of the FIFA World Cup, even though the tournament will take place more than five years from now. Many of the featured players may at this moment be relatively very unknown, as still being very young. Like to see potential starring players, now more or less still below the radar? Read our post: Young Talented Players who can become the 2026 FIFA World Cup stars. Famous already, and even more excelling in 2026? Also the North American national (host) teams such as Canada, Mexico or the United States can come with players with a fairly high profile. As we, for example, consider the case of Bayern Munich’s left back, Alphonso Davies or Lille striker Jonathan David for the Canadian team. Or that of Christian Pulisic from Chelsea FC, Sergiño Dest, recently signed by FC Barcelona or Giovanni Reyna from Borussia Dortmund, for the US team. As well as the cases of Diego Lainez from Betis or Érick Gutiérrez from PSV Eindhoven for the Mexican national team. All of them, for a matter of age and projection may be in their prime for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Tactics and style of playWe all know: the time that managers of the national teams can spend with the players is usually very limited. Except in the run up to large-scale tournaments such as the World Cup finals. It is difficult for the players to assimilate the game ideas of their national coach as natural as it can be fulfilled at clubs, where the manager has more training time. Taking this into account, the following is an interesting aspect as well. At the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups, the teams that ended up winning the competition – Spain and Germany, respectively – consisted of a core group of players who were in the same club. (In addition to having a group with other world-class players, of course). In 2010, the core of the Spanish team was FC Barcelona and the style of play of the Spanish national team was similar to that of ‘Barça’. In 2014, several of the players were part of Bayern Munich and that facilitated the connections and automatisms of the game of the German team. Now, the question is: which club will be leading by 2025, 2026, having several top players of the same nationality? Who will therefore perhaps make a mark also with their national team at the 2026 World Cup finals? Furthermore, if we take current football as a reference when trying to predict the tactical formations and style of play in 2026, we can talk about the flexibility and dynamism that European football clubs currently show. Being specific: as a result of the Liverpool-success of the German coach Jurgen Klopp, a group of managers have emerged in the Bundesliga with similar styles. Such as Thomas Tuchel or Marco Rose, whose fast and high-pressing game has been growing within the ideas of managers at the highest level. Flexible tactics This leads us to think that in the future, tactical formations and playing styles will be much more flexible with much more mobility and constant pressing. Requiring greater physical deployment and greater concentration on the player’s part. And even a greater attention from the amateur fan to interpret and understand what is happening on the pitch. All these kind of tactical aspects could make the 2026 FIFA World Cup football in the USA, Canada and Mexico even more interesting than it will be anyhow! TV and live streamingThe tv and live streaming at the World Cup in 2026 is expected to present some interesting innovations. These in addition to the normal advances that we have seen from football broadcasts all over so far. We are doubtlessly going to find even new forms of live streaming, bringing the tournament to the whole world – to everyone who is part of the FIFA world of football. In the last three editions of the FIFA World Cup, the limit of 3 billion simultaneous spectators has been exceeded for at least one minute. That is the equivalent to almost half the population of the planet (!). Considering the aforementioned fact and remembering that in the last 30 years there has been a progressive increase in the number of spectators, we might reach the limit of 4 billion spectators by the finals in 2026. And if besides the TV and live streaming features also the sportive aspect of the 23rd global soccer tournament lives up to the expectations, we certainly in 2026 will have a World Cup Soccer for the ages… 2026 WORLD CUP FOOTBALLWashington DC | Host City World Cup 2026WITHDRAWN!2026 World Cup cities: Washington, DC is a U.S. city hosting the World Cup in North America.
On Thursday, FIFA announced the host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America at a live event in New York. The United States will host the bulk of the tournament with 11 host cities being selected. Mexico will have three host cities and Canada two. The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the first edition with 48 teams and three host countries. Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium will become the first venue in the world to take part in three World Cups. “We congratulate the 16 FIFA World Cup Host Cities on their outstanding commitment and passion,» FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in a statement released by the federation. «Today is a historic day – for everyone in those cities and states, for FIFA, for Canada, the USA, and Mexico who will put on the greatest show on Earth. We look forward to working together with them to deliver what will be an unprecedented FIFA World Cup and a game-changer as we strive to make football truly global.» For Canada, it will be the first time that the country has hosted a men’s World Cup. The country, however, successfully hosted the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the city of Vancouver, in particular, has a strong history of hosting international events, including the 2010 Winter Olympics. The United States, in the meantime, hosted the 1994 FIFA World Cup and Mexico was host in 1970 and 1986. The 2026 FIFA World Cup host cities are as follows:2026 WORLD CUP FOOTBALLThe United States will provide 11 stadiums for the 2026 World Cup. It is the most dynamic part of the so called urban agglomeration Golden Horseshoe. It is also the largest city in Canada. Multiple winners of the Canadian Championship, the MLS and the MLS Cups, they play their home games at the ultramodern BMO Field stadium. It is the Canadian national soccer venue, having hosted games on the highest national and international levels, amongst which the FIFA Youth and Women World Cups, the CONCACAF Youth and Women Championships, and the football tournament at the Olympic Games of 1976. Toronto is the soccer home of the national team and has well known franchises in several other sports. Besides Toronto FC in the MLS, the NHL competition is also made up by the Maple Leafs, the NBA has the Raptors, the MLB has its Blue Jays, and the CFL, for example, has the Toronto team Argonauts. 2026 World Cup coming to U.S., Mexico, Canada as joint bid wins voteIn a long-anticipated vote on Wednesday, the joint bid of the U.S., Mexico and Canada defeated Morocco, its only challenger, as 200 national soccer federations cast their ballots to cap FIFA’s annual Congress. The three-nation bid captured 134 votes, with Morocco earning 65 from the panel and only Iran choosing neither option. Cuba, Slovenia and Spain (whose delegation was in Krasnodar, Russia, handling its coaching situation) abstained. «This is an incredible, and incredibly important, moment for soccer in North America and beyond,» said Carlos Cordeiro, the president of U.S. Soccer. FIFA president Gianni Infantino congratulates the presidents of the Mexico, Canada and United States soccer federations. Mladen Antonov/AFP/Getty Images The tournament will be the first World Cup in the United States since 1994, and bid organizers frequently highlighted the importance of hosting a World Cup as a way to mark and push the expansion of the sport in the U.S. That vote took place under the old system, in which only a few dozen FIFA executives decided which countries would receive hosting rights in a process that was the epitome of backroom dealing. After a slew of high-profile arrests in 2015, however, as well as the ongoing investigations into football-related corruption by the U.S. Department of Justice and other law enforcement agencies around the world, the World Cup bidding process was overhauled, and now features each of FIFA’s eligible member nations casting a public vote. World Cup 2018 must-readsCordeiro, who had a good foundation of relationships because of his past involvement on various FIFA committees, was the frontman, sometimes visiting as many as three countries in a single day. Figuring Morocco was likely to get most of the support in Africa, the North American bid focused on shoring up the Western Hemisphere and then targeted federations in Asia and Europe to push it over the top. U.S. Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro presents the United bid to the FIFA Congress in Moscow. Kirill Kudryavtsev/AFP/Getty Images The same FIFA report also confirmed Morocco did not disclose its anti-LGBT laws when the respective campaigns had their human rights policies evaluated. With only about 4 million registered soccer players in the United States out of a population of 330 million, Cordeiro sees the 2026 World Cup as a potential beacon, in addition to being a catalyst for greater expansion. Now, that dream is very much alive. And after a qualifying cycle that saw the national team suffer the indignity of missing out on the World Cup this summer, American fans can at least say they have a significant salve. The format for automatic bids for host countries is in transition. The North American region will get 6.5 bids (including one-half of a bid because one team will play another team from another country in a playoff to get in), and it hasn’t been decided whether all three hosts of the United bid will get in automatically. In 2002, when Japan and South Korea co-hosted the event, both teams were given automatic bids. Sunil Gulati, the longtime U.S. Soccer president who elected not to run for another term after the national team’s failure, was at the heart of the failed bid in 2010 and set this bid in motion several years ago. To him, knowing that the World Cup will be returning to the United States is a long time in the making. «On Dec. 2, 2010, I couldn’t decide if I never wanted to go anywhere near this again or if we should start working on the next one right away,» he said, referring to the tainted loss to Qatar’s bid. «But I’m glad we did. And this a really fantastic day for soccer.» NY/NJ among announced sites for 2026 World CupSocial Links for Steven VagoSocial Links for David ScottContact The AuthorSocial Links for Mark LungarielloContact The AuthorThanks for contacting us. New York City and New Jersey teamed up to land some of the 2026 World Cup games at MetLife stadium in Rutherford, NJ, FIFA officials announced Thursday. The Los Angeles, Boston, Philadelphia and Dallas areas were among the other locations picked to host the tournament, the first with an expanded 48-team bracket and three co-hosting countries in North America. The New York/New Jersey games will take place at MetLife Stadium — the home of the NFL’s New York Giants and New York Jets. The mood got tense at viewing party in Jersey City’s Liberty State Park when “The City That Never Sleeps” was the last location announced as a host via a FIFA livestream. But the relieved crowd erupted in applause and chants of “New York” and “New Jersey” once it became clear the metro area would get its share of the beautiful game. “As much as we want the early games, there is one game we want: We want the last game,” Murphy told the raucous crowd. “We want that World Cup trophy hoisted right here up the road in MetLife Stadium.”
New York City Mayor Eric Adams said soccer “has a way of bringing us all together” after a stressful few years. “This is what it is all about. All of us that have been weighed down by COVID, all of us that wondered what the future would be like, the question mark lingered over our city and country for two years,” Adams said. “Today, these young people and their enthusiasm, they took that question mark and they turned it into an exclamation point. We are America, we are New York. We are New Jersey. You’re darn right we are going to be all right. The World Cup is coming here to New York and New Jersey.”
Soccer fanatics were just as jazzed by the news. “I’m so excited for it. Can’t wait to watch the finals,” said Kevin Doherty, 9, of Long Island. “I was so happy.” Of the games, 60 will be played in the US, with the quarterfinals and all subsequent rounds scheduled to be played here. Canada and Mexico will host 10 games apiece. All venues will be converted to grass fields for the soccer games. Cities like Chicago, Minneapolis and Arizona dropped out of the bidding to host some games over what officials viewed as onerous demands by FIFA, soccer’s governing body. Other cities like Las Vegas didn’t make the cut before the announcement on Thursday.
In Liberty State Park, dozens celebrated that NY/NJ were picked, many of them children wearing soccer jerseys. “We are excited for our family,” said Stacey Franzke, 45, of Massapequa. “All three of my kids are huge soccer fans. I know how much this means that they even have the potential of going to see something and support something …They’ll have it in their backyard here.” Her son Cole, 9, added, “I’m just really excited so I can see a World Cup game.” New Jersey’s Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver told The Post the region — which is home to Major League Soccer squads the New York Red Bulls and New York City Football Club — thinks “we are the center of the world.”
“Soccer has become the No. 1 sport for many of our young people,” Oliver said. Ed Foster Simeon said he was hoping the games would breed new soccer fans in the US, where the sport remains in the shadow of other American professional spots. “Opportunity here is to continue the growth of soccer in the country,” Simeon said. Five Things to Know: Unified 2026 World Cup BidOn Monday, the Federations of the United States, Canada and Mexico submitted an historic unified bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Here are five things you should know about the North American World Cup bid. The BidOn April 10, 2017, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF), along with the Canadian Soccer Association (CSA) and Federación Mexicana de Fútbol (FMF) announced their intention to submit a unified bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup throughout North America. Should the bid be successful, the tournament would mark the first FIFA World Cup to be hosted in three nations and second to be co-hosted after the 2002 tournament in Korea Republic and Japan. A History of Hosting World-Class EventsCombined, the USA, Canada and Mexico have successfully hosted 13 FIFA events, which is the most of any trio of geographically connected nations in the world. That figure includes six different FIFA World Cups (three Men’s and three Women’s) as well as six youth World Cups and the FIFA Confederations Cup. Along with holding current attendance records for the FIFA Confederations Cup and U-17 World Cup, Mexico also set then record figures when it hosted both the 1970 and 1986 FIFA World Cups. The 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States surpassed those marks and holds still-standing records in both average (68,991) and overall attendance (3,587,538). The overall attendance record is made more impressive considering the 24-team tournament included only 52 matches, compared to the 32 sides and 64 games that have made up the five editions since. Tournament Host Milestone Notes 1970 FIFA World Cup First World Cup to average over 50,000 fans 1983 FIFA World Youth Championship 1986 FIFA World Cup 1987 FIFA U-16 World Championship 1994 FIFA World Cup Record overall and average attendance 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup Record average attendance 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup Record overall and average attendance 2002 FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup Record overall attendance 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup Record overall attendance; Record non-FIFA World Cup attendance Additionally, the memorable 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup still holds the record for highest average attendance for that tournament with 37,319 per match. At 1,194,215, the 16-team tournament also held the overall attendance record until 2015, when the expanded 24-team FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada took the figure to 1,353,506 total spectators – a record for any FIFA tournament outside the men’s World Cup. Most Recent SuccessThe 2016 Copa America Centenario most recently proved the USA’s hosting chops. Taking place in 10 venues across the country last summer, the tournament witnessed an overall attendance of nearly 1.5 million fans, with the 32 matches welcoming an average of 46,00 spectators per game, setting tournament records in both categories. Why a Unified Bid?As seen above, the North American trio of nations has been well-tested and delivered when it comes to hosting big-time FIFA events. A unified bid between the USA, Canada and Mexico reflects the growth of the game in the CONCACAF region as well as the newly expanded 48-team tournament field, which will make its debut at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. «This is a milestone day for U.S. Soccer and for CONCACAF,” U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati said. “We gave careful consideration to the prospect of bidding for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and ultimately feel strongly this is the right thing for our region and for our sport. Along with our partners from the Canada Soccer Association and the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol, we are confident that we will submit an exemplary bid worthy of bringing the FIFA World Cup back to North America. The United States, Mexico and Canada have individually demonstrated their exceptional abilities to host world-class events. When our nations come together as one, as we will for 2026, there is no question the United States, Mexico and Canada will deliver an experience that will celebrate the game and serve players, supporters and partners alike.” Format DetailsWhile Gulati stressed the main goal for the three governing bodies was to first work towards earning the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he did lay out some of the basic details for the potential tournament in North America. The 48-team competition will comprise a total of 80 games, with 60 to be held in the United States and an additional 10 each in Canada and Mexico. The proposed format would also see the USA host all games from the Quarterfinals to the Final. 2026 WORLD CUP FOOTBALLSeattle | Host City World Cup 20262026 World Cup cities: Seattle is a U.S. city hosting the World Cup in North America. Which match(es) in which host city? The total number of 80 matches will be divided into 60 matches in the United States, 10 matches in Canada and 10 matches in Mexico, at least, according to United Bid’s plan. To the best of our knowledge, the description of the host city already lists in which round of the schedule one or more matches are scheduled. According to the United Bid, the final has been allocated to New York/New Jersey (MetLife Stadium). Important similarities are, among other things, the strong sports background of the 2026 World Cup host cities and well-organized infrastructure. High Quality StadiumsSince the bid was chosen to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a further host city evaluation and selection process was required. All proposed stadiums were already fully operational; there has been no need for new stadiums to be built. Although it is good to state that the Los Angeles SoFi Stadium has been completed only in 2020. Six of the former candidate stadiums however would need renovation, the 2026 Bid stated. FIFA World Cup 2026: Meet the official host cities in the U.S., Mexico and Canada
Estadio Azteca makes history as the only venue to host 3 World Cups
T he United States, Canada and Mexico will share the spotlight as World Cup hosts for the first time in history during the 2026 edition. On Thursday, the big announcement of all the venues was finally made with some surprises in store. The U.S. is getting 10 cities hosting the event, Mexico is getting three and Canada is surprisingly getting two.
For a historic country like Mexico with two previous hosting duties in the tournament, this will be the third time doing it and Azteca Stadium will be the first venue in football history to host a World Cup. It saw Pele win the trophy in 1970 and Maradona win it in 1986. The accomodation will be West, Center and East depending on the time zone of each city.
United States World Cup venues.
With a whopping 11 venues as the lead organizer of the tournament, the United States gets the cities of Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles in the West. Kansas City, Dallas and Houston in the Center. In he East, they get Boston, New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Miami. Los Angeles’ Lo-Fi Stadium is believed to be amongst the strongest candidates to host the final.
Mexico World Cup venues.
With three stadiums hosting the event, Mexico is getting the mythical Azteca Stadium that resides in Mexico City. BBVA Stadium in Monterrey will be the second venue. Last but not least, Akron Stadium in Guadalajara will be the third venue that is hosting World Cup matches.
Canada World Cup venues.
With only two venues, Canada is getting Toronto and Vancouver to represent the country in this historical shared World Cup. After the announcement was over, FIFA president Gianni Infantino gave a speech for what he is expecting from this historic event. However, no announcement of the inaugural game or venue for the final were made yet.

2026 FIFA World Cup (C1000x)
