UK to move warplanes to civilian airports – Daily Express

Britain is preparing to station combat aircraft in civilian airports for the first time since World War II in response to the Ukraine conflict, the Daily Express reported on Sunday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The dispersing of planes across the country will help the Royal Air Force’s rapid-response units survive attacks on their bases, the newspaper said.

The Agile Combat Employment (ACE) scheme was initially intended for potential hotspots overseas, such as the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe.

According to the report, a trial next month will have Eurofighter Typhoon and F-35 jet fighters based in Norfolk, Lincolnshire, and Scotland “scattered in small groups and based discreetly” in several regional airports with suitable runways.

Other jets and larger aircraft will be based in different areas in times of “imminent crisis,” the newspaper said.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said last month that Britain will boost defense spending to 2.5% of its GDP by the end of 2030 to adapt to “a more dangerous and more competitive world.”

EU branded ‘third world’ economy

The fallout of the sanctions imposed on Russia over the conflict in Ukraine has turned the European Union into “the third world of the Western world economies,” a senior contributor to Forbes magazine has claimed.

“These days, the European stock market is the worst in the Western world,” under-performing the US by ten basis points, Kenneth Rapoza pointed out in his article on Tuesday.

“The most significant headwind” for such a state of affairs has been the “Russian sanctions on energy as punishment for its war with Ukraine,” Rapoza insisted. Those restrictions “set off a massive commodity price spike that’s hurt the European economy the most,” he added.

The author advised investors against putting their money into the bloc, at least until Brussels figures out how to compensate for the massive reduction in energy supply from Russia, and how to mitigate the harmful impact of its own sanctions.

If there’s no ceasefire in Ukraine soon, chances are that “Europe becomes so desperate this winter and supply chains so stretched that it has no choice but to relax some sanctions or convince non-EU partners to relabel and transship Russian commodities to look in [compliance] with their own rules, but really doing an end-around,” he wrote.

Until some solution is provided, Europe will remain “the third world of the Western world economies,” Rapoza stressed, saying that this was how one investor on Twitter had recently described the situation on the continent to him.

The author also asked Vladimir Signorelli – the head of US-based consulting firm Bretton Woods Research – to comment.

“They’re certainly heading that way,” Signorelli acknowledged. “And you have the Greens still opposing nuclear in Germany. I just don’t understand them. They are on the fast track to a third-world energy program.”

Only China is now “worse as an investment” than the EU, Rapoza claimed, citing Beijing’s “heated political fight” with Washington, internal struggle within the Chinese political elites and the country’s harsh Covid-19 curbs.

Germany and France want Tiktokers deployed against Russia – Bloomberg

TikTokers and YouTubers could help the EU drive a wedge between the Russian government and the people, Germany and France have reportedly told other members of the bloc.

Ideas on how its members could influence Russian citizens were formulated in a document circulated ahead of this week’s high-level EU meeting in Prague, Bloomberg reported on Monday. The plan is meant for discussion behind closed doors, but the news agency said it had studied the document.

Berlin and Paris suggested enrolling popular video bloggers on platforms including YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, Telegram, and VK to help disseminate EU-funded teaching courses on “media literacy,” according to Bloomberg. The courses will supposedly explain to Russians why they should dismiss “Russian propaganda” and trust “independent information” that counters what the Russian government says.

The EU should also target Russian-speaking minorities in other nations with content that serves the same goal, the report says. There is also a proposal for an “Internet Censorship Circumvention Hub” for Russians.

After Russia attacked Ukraine in late February, the EU significantly ramped up its efforts to silence Russian media within the bloc. Government-funded outlets RT and Sputnik were banned from broadcasting, while US-based tech giants such as Facebook stopped showing content from the news organizations on their platforms to EU residents. Brussels justified the censorship by the need to counter ‘Russian propaganda’.

Moscow also imposed restrictions on media, blacklisting some Western outlets in retaliation and introduced punishment for slander against Russia’s armed forces.

Successfully imitating the general format pioneered by Time magazine, it was established in 1933 as a weekly magazine by the journalist David Lawrence as the United States News. It won general note for its thorough coverage of major news events in Washington, D.C., and the United States, often carrying the complete text of major speeches and documents emanating from the capital. In 1945 Lawrence founded World Report to treat world news as United States News treated domestic news. The two magazines merged in 1948. From its start, U.S. News & World Report had an editorial viewpoint somewhat more conservative than its larger rivals, Time and the American weekly newsmagazine Newsweek, and unlike them it paid scant attention to sports and the arts, except as they might pertain to developing major political and economic stories. In 1962 Lawrence transferred ownership of U.S. News to its employees.

The magazine in 1983 launched a series of signature annual rankings beginning with a ranking of American colleges and universities. In the 21st century these rankings were based on such factors as academic peer reviews and student-to-faculty ratios. U.S. News was purchased by the Canadian-born American media and real-estate mogul Mort B. Zuckerman in 1984. More than 65% of respondents said they have seen their utility costs rise by over 100%. Another 30% of pub owners said their bills went up 200% while 8% reported seeing an increase of a staggering 500%. Nearly 80% of owners said they had no way to keep up with the costs.

The desperate operators are now calling on the government to step in and save them from having to shut down. One pub owner told the Morning Advertiser that “proper support and intervention is needed by the government,” pointing out that “even a 20% increase will be unaffordable, never mind 200%.”

Other owners have also blasted the “ridiculous” situation they are currently in, noting that it’s even worse than “Covid times.” Some are calling for the government to reduce VAT and business rates while others propose introducing a cap on energy prices for businesses.

The Morning Advertiser says the ongoing energy crisis is now being described as an “extinction event” for hospitality and that unless the government acts quickly, Britain could see thousands of pubs, restaurants, and breweries shut their doors forever.

Fisco Group managing director Heath Ball, who operates three pubs across the southeast of England, told the Morning Advertiser that the hospitality sector seemed to be underrepresented in the “corridors of power.”

“Maybe because they think we’re a robust industry, and they are right, but this is now a doomsday scenario. To see the business secretary trying to put consumers’ minds at rest saying that help is coming is great, but perhaps his focus should be on the businesses on the brink of closure,” said Ball.

The director also noted that while many operators are facing price hikes on energy, some are having difficulties getting any sort of deals from the power companies at all. “Talking to other operators, they aren’t even being offered new energy contracts at any price due to the sector/operation being deemed ‘high risk’. So they can’t even get power even if they can afford it, what a shambles.”

Eurozone already in recession – UBS

The euro area has already entered a “shallow” recession that will last through the end of the year, economists at UBS Group said on Thursday, in a report seen by Bloomberg. They attributed the contraction to energy price pressure.

The Eurozone economy will reportedly contract by 0.1% in the third quarter and by 0.2% in the fourth. The full-year outlook has been upgraded while the growth forecast for 2023 has been cut to 0.8% from 1.2%.

“In light of further significant energy-price increases, which imply further pressure on household consumption and fixed investment, we now expect the Eurozone to suffer a technical recession,” economists wrote.

According to UBS, its forecast assumed that natural gas prices will spike further, but there’ll be no severe shortages. Should rationing become necessary, “the economic damage would likely be much worse,” it stressed.

The warning was echoed by Morgan Stanley economists, who on Thursday projected a deeper-than-expected euro area contraction starting in the fourth quarter.

“We see a more long-lasting impact of this energy crisis into next year, as we expect higher prices and uncertainty over energy supply will persist well into the 2023-24 winter,” the analysts said. “Not all is gloomy though, and we still think a recovery will follow this weak patch, driven by a pick-up in private and public investment.”

World News Daily Report ( WNDR) is a satirical fake news website purporting to be an American Jewish Zionist newspaper based in Tel Aviv and dedicated to covering biblical archeology news and other mysteries around the globe. [3]

It is run by Canadians Janick Murray-Hall and Olivier Legault and follows the old-school tabloid-style faux-journalism of its predecessors, such as the Weekly World News . [4]

History

Since September 2013, [8] Murray-Hall had been involved in creating a French-language site called Journal de Mourréal, intended to spoof the real Journal de Montréal. The Journal de Mourréal (a colloquial/slang name for the city) was ordered to stop using a similar logo as a trademark violation of the Journal de Montréal. [9]

Interviewed about the Journal, Legault said that «our main goal is to have fun with this medium, but we still want to get a message through. It is a criticism of sensationalism in the media». [10]

Murray-Hall and Legault founded World News Daily Report in November 2013. [11] [12] Most fake news sites started after Facebook made significant changes to their newsfeed in March 2013, allowing fake news to proliferate.

Radio Canada interviewed Olivier Legault about the Journal de Mourréal and World News Daily Report. They asked if he was concerned that people would believe the stories on the second site. Legault replied that the site was intended to encourage self-criticism, but also that it was people’s fault if they wanted to believe fake stories. He continued, saying:

«The people who take it seriously are people who want to take it seriously. It’s stupid to say, but… We preach to converts. The majority of people who share it understand that it’s a joke, and others share it because they want to believe it, not because they really believe in it… You can invent everything and anything and people will believe it. Honestly, it’s a little disturbing when you realise that. As long as you confirm what they want to believe, they will share it. If you go against their opinion, they will immediately think that this is false news. But if you go in the direction of their opinion, they will share it right away. They lose their critical spirit.» [13]

Murray-Hall also told Buzzfeed in 2017 that Google’s move to reduce advertising revenue to fake news sites had reduced their revenues considerably: «Presently we aren’t making any money at all, which is a real bummer so we don’t know where WNDR is going to go from here. It’s just a shame because WNDR is a monster, it can create major traffic like most sites could only dream of with only one post.” [14]

Reception

In 2015, listing WNDR ninth among «The 9 Worst Fake News Sites,» Gizmodo allowed «the site doesn’t always seem intent on deceiving people. But it’s still not very good. Not very good at all.» [15] Later that year, The Independent included WNDR among sites that «play fast and loose with the word ‘news’ while delivering material that’s completely fabricated.» [16]

In 2016, fact-checking website Snopes.com said WNDR «often take[s] advantage of politically, socially, or religiously divisive issues to drive outrage-based traffic». [17] That same year, however, ABC News identified WNDR as «a satirical entertainment news site,» [18] and reproduced its online disclaimer [19] reading, «WNDR assumes all responsibility for the satirical nature of its articles and for the fictional nature of their content. All characters appearing in the articles in this website—even those based on real people—are entirely fictional and any resemblance between them and any persons, living, dead, or undead is purely a miracle.» [18]

Also in 2016, the Columbia Journalism Review labeled WNDR as a fake news site despite having a legitimate-sounding name. [20] At year-end, BuzzFeed recognized WNDR for scoring five times among the year’s top 50 Biggest Fake News Hits On Facebook. [1]

In 2017, fact-checking website PolitiFact deemed WNDR «a satirical news site,» [21] as did the Burlington County Times , [22] while the Toronto Star cited WNDR as an example of «satirical sites posing as real news outlets.» [23]

Snopes regularly debunks WNDR articles, calling the site ‘dubious’, [24] with ‘a long record of entirely fabricated and sensationalist stories’. [25] It also described its content as ‘hate-baiting’ [26] and that its staff have a preoccupation with bestiality. [27]

Leaked slides detail YouTube’s Ukraine censorship – journalist

A tutorial for YouTube’s content moderators that emerged on social media on Tuesday shows that the Google-owned platform has labeled a number of critical positions on the conflict in Ukraine “hateful” or “extreme” and can censor or demonetize creators on those grounds. While the parent company Alphabet has not confirmed or denied the screenshots’ authenticity, a Polish contractor who shared them has reportedly been fired.

Six screenshots shared by Russian journalist Andrey Guselnikov on Telegram show internal codes and examples of what YouTube has labeled “harmful” or “hateful” content in an online course mandated for content moderators.

According to the slides, the “glorification/promotion of [the] ‘Z’ symbol associated with the Russian military” is labeled “hate” and “extreme” under policy ID 864. So is saying that the conflict “is to denazify the Ukrainian government,” which is what Russian President Vladimir Putin said in February.

Saying that “Ukraine military is attacking its own people” is also considered problematic, ranging from “harmful-misinformation-moderate” (ID 862) to “harmful-misinformation-extreme” (ID 863) if the powers that be decide it amounts to “promotion or glorification.”

There was no clarification whether either standard would apply to factual reports of Ukrainian artillery targeting Ukrainian citizens living in territories under Russian control, for example.

Another highlighted phrase under policies 862 and 863 is “US funded bioweapons labs in Ukraine.” Presumably the key word here is “bioweapons,” since the existence of “biological research facilities” in Ukraine was recognized by US Under Secretary of State Victoria Nuland in a Senate testimony in March, and the Russian military has repeatedly presented evidence that these labs were funded by the US government, and the Pentagon in particular.

One of the slides shows a list of “out of scope” claims, noting there is no “full-scale block on all content” related to the conflict.

According to Guselnikov, the source of the leaked slides is a Polish national named Kamil Kozera, who used to work for Majorel, a contractor hired by YouTube for content moderation. YouTube somehow identified Kozera from the screenshots and had him fired over the leak. RT cannot independently verify the authenticity of the screenshots, and has reached out to YouTube for comment.

The video hosting platform, owned alongside Google by the Silicon Valley behemoth Alphabet, took the unprecedented step in censorship by globally blocking RT, Sputnik and all channels “associated with Russian state-funded media” in early March, expanding on the original ban ordered by the EU authorities in their jurisdiction. It also “paused” all advertising and “all of the ways to monetize” on the platform – such as sponsorships and superchats – in Russia.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos in May, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki said that the company continues to operate in Russia so it can “deliver independent news” to Russians, noting that “What we’re really seeing in this conflict is that information does play a key role, that information can be weaponized.”

EU leader ‘ashamed’ of asylum-seeker treatment

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said on Friday that he was “ashamed” of living conditions in the overcrowded Ter Apel asylum-seeker processing center, and promised to resolve the problem with handling new arrivals.

Global humanitarian group Doctors Without Borders (MSF) previously released a scathing report on the Ter Apel center, urging the authorities to create more migrant reception sites. Leon Veldt, the spokesman for the Dutch government’s refugee organization (COA), told AFP on Saturday that “several hundred” migrants were bussed out of Ter Apel and taken to other reception centers across the country.

“We hope to slowly normalize the situation at Ter Apel,” Veldt said.

In a statement on Thursday, MSF said around 700 people, including children and pregnant women, had been forced to sleep outside the center, which was “completely overwhelmed and unable to meet the most basic needs of new arrivals.” The global humanitarian group described the living conditions at Ter Apel as “inhumane and undignified.”

The report came out after a three-month-old baby died in a sports hall that was being used to house asylum seekers.

Dutch Poverty Minister Carola Schouten said she was “shocked” by the report and vowed to fix the situation.

“I think that everyone in the Netherlands thinks it’s terrible that MSF feels obliged to jump in at Ter Apel,” Rutte told reporters, adding that the problems at the center were “not something that can be solved in a few weeks or months.”

Rutte promised that his government would focus on a “structural solution” to handle the inflow of asylum seekers. He said that a 2015 decision to reduce asylum capacity and a housing shortage had exacerbated the problem.

FCC Commissioners Vote to Kick China Telecom Americas Out of the US

Last Tuesday, commissioners of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to nullify China Telecom Americas’ authorizations to operate in the US. Biden to Rejoin Paris Climate Accord Once He’s Seated

Police Arrest Truck Driver Protesters

The police in Canada have been using a lot of force to push back protesters who are demonstrating against COVID-19 and Justin Trudeau’s government. EU facing decade of winter crises – Belgium

The EU could suffer “terrible” winters in the years ahead if the bloc’s leaders don’t take immediate steps to impose a price cap on uncontrolled gas prices, according to Belgian Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten.

“The next 5 to 10 winters will be terrible if nothing is done,” the minister tweeted. “We must act at the source, at European level, and work on freezing gas prices.”

A price cap could help cut soaring energy bills by €770 ($770), according to Van der Straeten, who said the link between gas prices and electricity prices needs urgent reform.

The comments come as EU leaders plan an emergency intervention to combat skyrocketing energy bills for businesses and consumers across the 27-nation bloc.

“The European energy market is failing and urgently needs reform,” Van der Straeten stated. “This is no longer tenable for many families and companies. Electricity is produced as cheaply as last year but sold at record prices. By reforming, we are tackling exuberant excess profits.”

“The time for talking is over, now it is time to decide,” the minister said.
