Как работать с диалогом?

О путешествиях на английском языке

(1) Do you like travelling? — Тебе нравится путешествовать?

Yes, I do. Many people like travelling. Now it’s a little bit complicated, because of Corona. I wish we didn’t have such problems.

(2) What is travel for you? — Что для вас путешествие?

It’s an important part of my life. Every trip is like a reboot for me. You know, I used to visit several countries during the year. Of course now it’s not so easy, but there are wonderful places in Russia I would like to visit.

(3) What different kinds of travelling are there? — Какие существуют виды путешествий?

I’d say there are two of them. When you book a trip with a travel company and when you buy tickets, look for accommodation and so on by yourself.

(4) What’s the best place you’ve ever been to? — Какое лучшее место, в котором вы когда-либо были?

I think it was the Wadi Rum desert in Jordan. It was a very peaceful place.

(5) Would you like to go travelling for a few years non-stop? — Хотели бы вы отправиться в путешествие без остановки на несколько лет?

Yes, I would. It’s one of my biggest desires. On the other hand I think it’s very hard to be away from parents and friends for such a long time. But I would definitely try.

(6) What are the good and bad things about travelling? — Что хорошего и плохого в путешествиях?

Meeting new cultures, people, traditions and food in foreign countries is amazing. I think each trip changes me to some extent. I feel that I grow up and educate myself. These are the good things. The bad thing is the cost of travelling of course. Lovely capitalism makes it more expensive every year.

(7) Where do you want to travel to before you die? — Куда вы хотите отправиться, прежде чем умрете?

Australia. I’d like to live there at least for a month.

(8) Is it better to travel or to arrive? — Лучше уезжать или приезжать?

I like both. I like travelling but I like to come back home as well.

(9) Lin Yutang said: «No one realizes how beautiful it is to travel until he comes home and rests his head on his old, familiar pillow.» Do you agree? — «Никто не осознает, как прекрасно путешествовать, пока он не придет домой и не положит голову на свою старую, знакомую подушку». Вы согласны?

Yes, I do. Sweet, sweet home

(1) What springs to mind when you hear the word ‘travel’? — Что приходит на ум, когда вы слышите слово «путешествие»?

I think about different countries and how interesting it is to travel around the world.

(2) Are you a traveller? — Ты путешественник?

I don’t know. I like travelling and I’ve visited a lot of countries already, but I can’t say that I’m a big traveller.

(3) Is travel an education? — Путешествие — это образование?

Yes it is. You find out new things about other countries and places, meet new people and learn more about their lifestyle.

(4) Would you like to travel in space or to the moon? — Хотели бы вы полететь в космос или на Луну?

I think everyone would love to travel in space. But I think it will not be possible in the next 50 years.

(5) Would you like to work in the travel industry? — Хотели бы вы работать в индустрии туризма?

Maybe, but not now of course. Travel industry is getting down nowadays.

(6) Is travel helping the world? — Путешествие помогает миру?

It’s a big part of the economy for some countries. So yes, I think travels are useful for everybody and for the world too.

(7) What would make you wiser – travelling around the world for ten years or reading 10,000 books? — Что сделало бы вас мудрее — путешествовать по миру десять лет или прочитать 10 000 книг?

Both are good. I’d choose to read 10 000 books during traveling! 😀

(8) St. Augustine said: «The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.» What does this mean? Do you agree? — «Мир — это книга, и те, кто не путешествует, читают только страницу». Что это значит? Вы согласны?

Yeah, very smart words. The World is a book indeed. And if you want to read the whole story and new chapters of it, you should travel around the World.

Travelling

Travelling. Вариант 1

We live in times when it’s rather easy to travel to any point of the planet. So no wonder travelling becomes more popular. What is more, our modern life is impossible without travelling. And there are many reasons for this.

A few decades ago it couldn’t be imagined that we would be able to travel almost everywhere. Now we can travel by different means of transport: by plane, by ship, by train, by car and even on foot. Some people like to travel by plane, because it is the best way to get to a foreign country fast. But others prefer traveling by train. They say that this method is more convenient and cheaper. Anyway, we have got something to choose from. And the way of travelling depends only on our opportunities and preferences.

Another good thing is that travelling helps us live and enjoy life. When we get tired of our daily routine, we need to change the surroundings. And travelling is one of the best way to break the monotony of our life. We travel, see new countries and cities, visit historical places, meet new people and taste different dishes. It brings us new impressions and makes life brighter. And that’s why millions of people all around the world adore travelling.

And finally, it is commonly known that travelling is a very nice activity. It’s the time for relaxation and thinking. Nothing can give us a great deal positive emotions and memories as travelling. It is often said that travelling broadens mind. And personally I believe that it is an undeniable truth.

Travelling. Вариант 2

The best way to break the monotony of our life and learn a lot about different places and cultures in the world is travelling. I think that our modern life is impossible without travelling. People get tired of their daily routine, they need to change the surroundings. So they go to a travel agency, buy tickets to some nice place, pack their suitcases and set off on a journey.

Travelling has a great educational value because it is a chance to meet new people, visit museums and ancient sights, discover different ways of life, taste national cuisines and practice foreign languages. It makes us more appreciative of other cultures. The best way to study geography is to go to distant countries and cities.

We can travel by different means of transport: by plane, by ship, by train, by car and even on foot. It depends on our plans and preferences. Plane is the fastest but the most expensive means of transport. Travelling in a modern train can be very comfortable and enjoyable. We can admire picturesque landscapes from the window and communicate with our companions. When we travel by car we don’t have to buy any tickets or book a hotel, we can stop wherever we want and stay there as long as we like. Travelling on foot (or hiking) is quite popular among young people. It’s really exciting to walk in the countryside enjoying the beauty of hills and valleys, lakes and forests.

My parents spend their holidays travelling too. I was only 4 years old when they first took me to Turkey. That was an unforgettable holiday by the sea. We swam and sunbathed, went sailing and fishing. And we took plenty of beautiful pictures there.

Travelling is great! It can give you a great deal of pleasant emotions and memories. It’s the time for relaxation and thinking. People often return home with a fresh outlook on life and a fantastic zeal to do something good. And they usually say: “East or West – home is best.”

Travelling. Вариант 3

Travelling becomes more and more popular nowadays. Even ten years ago we couldn’t expect that we would be able to travel almost everywhere. Millions of tourists go to different places during the year.

It is said that travelling broadens your mind and it is absolutely true. Even a short trip where you get to know different people and different cultures may change you completely. It has become a usual thing, for example, for American graduates from school to have so called “gap year” when they don’t go to the university but spend the whole year travelling.

Travelling has become much cheaper now. Thousands of people now decide not to go to the travel agency but to organize the trip by themselves. They book the flight and the hotel, organize the entertainment part and enjoy it. While there are still people who prefer organized expensive voyages, there are people that prefer low-cost travelling. It is the type of travelling when you find the cheapest tickets on the plane, travel with your backpack, stay at the host family and have someone from the local people show you their culture.

For many people travelling becomes the way of living. They spend months and years travelling without coming home and seeing their family. They work, travel and enjoy their lives. And in my opinion it is the most important thing — live and enjoy your life.

How to Travel Around the World and prepare the trip of a lifetime

Leaving to travel around the world was simply the best decision of our lives! Since that one day in 2012 when we decided around a bottle of wine to travel around the world, our lives have been completely disrupted.

We travelled full-time for 19 months from China to South America via Southeast Asia, we made dozens of encounters, discovered places that will remain engraved in our memories, got to know other cultures, other languages. We first traveled at full speed, then slowed down to just take the time. the time to talk, to meet, the time that we often lack in our daily lives.

Then we returned to Switzerland, we found good jobs in Zurich. it was the end of a beautiful enchanted break. Except that here we were, we had a first taste for travel, freedom and the infinite flexibility that a round the world trip provides. and 18 months later, what was supposed to happen happened! We resigned again to reopen the parenthesis for good this time. Since then we have taken our work with us in our backpacks and exchanged our pretty Swiss apartment for a way of life that suits us better: the digital nomad lifestyle.

Since 2012, we have written and shared many blog posts with you about traveling around the world or long-distance travel. On this page, we’ve tried to put all this in order to help you find your way through all these years of blogging. We hope you will find a lot of useful information but also inspiration that may help you to take your turn in the adventure of a round the world trip.

Our free ebook and our book to travel around the world

First of all, we would like to start by introducing you to 2 resources that we have created and in which we have put a lot of energy and heart. We hope this will inspire you and help you embark on the adventure of a round-the-world trip.

Our free ebook to prepare your round the world trip

We started writing this e-book when we were preparing our world tour. At that time, we spent a lot of time reading different blogs / forums to gather information and prepare our trip. And frankly, we would have dreamed of having a document that explains to us simply and step by step what it takes to prepare a round the world trip. So we thought we were going to write it ourselves and a few months later, it was there. And since then, more than 10,000 travelers have downloaded it (the pdf version) and we hope that it will still help many future backpackers. You can read it by simply clicking on the link below (you will also be able to download it’s pdf version)

Our Book «Destination Tour du Monde» (French and German only)

Even if we had always dreamed of writing and publishing a book (especially Fabienne), we never thought that this dream would come true one day! And yet. It just took a bit of luck, meeting the right person (Hadi the founder of the Helvetiq publishing house) and a lot of work to make this project a reality.

I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть фото I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть картинку I travelled around the world 205. Картинка про I travelled around the world 205. Фото I travelled around the world 205

And in April 2017, Destination Tour du Monde was born! This book has our hearts set on it and is for anyone who dreams of travel and adventure (or their families to reassure them;)). You will of course find plenty of information to prepare your trip but also reflections on the questions you ask yourself before leaving, tips once on the road, lots of anecdotes, interviews with other travellers around the world etc. all magnificently illustrated by our friend the talented Florian from Helvetiq.

We simply tried to create the book we would have liked to have before our world tour and we hope that it will inspire many future travellers. If you want more information, you can take a look at the book page. Otherwise you can simply buy it directly on our publisher’s website or on Amazon (or in more than 500 bookshops in Switzerland and France)

Why travel around the world?

There are certainly as many reasons to go on a world tour as there are world travelers;) and if you are reading these lines, it is because you may already have yours. But if we had to choose a few of them, we’d tell you:

Moreover, in chapter 1 of our e-book, we review all the reasons that drive people to travel around the world. but also all those things that prevent them from taking the step and how to overcome them.

And if it’s not enough yet 😉 take 50 minutes of your time to watch the magnificent documentary Génération Tour du Monde (Round the world trip generation with english subtitles) by our friends les coflocs. I promise you that after watching you’ll have only one desire: to leave for the adventure of your life 😉

How to prepare a round the world trip

Now that you have made the decision to go on a round the world trip and have set yourself a departure date (promised it is the most difficult stage of the preparations;)), all you have to do is «prepare» your trip around the world:)

So certainly there are less fun aspects to the preparations for a round the world trip (I’m thinking in particular of vaccines;), insurance, bank fees etc. ), but don’t worry, we’re here to help you! Many articles have been written on all the important steps in preparing for a long-distance trip, which are listed below:) #Enjoy

Round the world trip budget

That’s probably THE question you’re asking yourself:

How much does a round-the-world trip cost, by the way?

I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть фото I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть картинку I travelled around the world 205. Картинка про I travelled around the world 205. Фото I travelled around the world 205

So unfortunately there are probably as many answers to this question as there are world travellers. the budget for such a trip will depend on many factors such as your travel style, the destinations you want to visit, activities, accommodations, airline tickets, visas and so on! But don’t worry, we’ve devoted a complete folder to the budget question for a round-the-world trip and after reading it, you’ll probably have a much more precise idea of how much the trip of your life will cost (don’t worry, you don’t need to be a millionaire to go around the world)

And if you are looking for more specific information about travelling to a particular country, you will find on this page all our travel budget articles in most of the countries we visited.

Plan your round the world trip itinerary

Ahhhhhhhh. The preparation of the itinerary for our round world tour. we remember this period with a lot of nostalgia, those evenings spent adding pins to our world map, dreaming, debating, making compromises and starting to sketch out our travel project. Good memories (and a couple arguments of course). 😉

But even if it’s rather fun to prepare a round-the-world itinerary, it doesn’t mean that there are not some constraints to take into account (we think in particular of the climate, the budget, visas, security. ). We have prepared a big article for you where we give you all the factors to take into account as well as our personal method to prepare the itinerary of our trip.

And if you’re wondering what our travel itinerary was, here it is below. This itinerary was created thanks to the great travel planner made by our friend Nico (which you’ll certainly use a lot to prepare the itinerary for your round the world trip).

Unless you are going around the world on foot, by bike or by sailboat, there is a good chance that you will use the plane at some point during your round-the-world trip. And precisely, round-the-world airline tickets is a subject that divides world travellers a little bit. There are indeed 2 ways to do this:

Obviously, each method has its advantages and disadvantages (it would be too easy if not 😉 ). But as we are very nice, we have devoted an entire chapter to this topic in our ebook on the preparations for a round the world trip here:

The recommended vaccine for travelers

Travel insurance for a round the world trip

We know that the subject of travel insurance is a very boring one and that you probably don’t want to think about it while you are preparing for the adventure of your life. However, in our opinion, it is simply unconscious to leave for a round-the-world trip without being insured for some important things (we think mainly of medical expenses, repatriation and civil liability).

As the subject is quite complicated, we have prepared several resources that should help you to understand everything about travel insurance for a round the world trip and especially to choose the right insurance for your trip:

How to avoid bank fees while traveling?

You would rather spend your money on travel than give it to your bank, we agree! However, the problem is that many major banks are very happy with the withdrawal fees abroad (yes, even in 2019. ).

In Europe we use a lot online Banks when we travel. N26 is one of the market leaders and it will soon be available in the US as well! Get to know more about N26 in our blog post

What should you pack to travel around the world?

After several years of traveling around the world, we now need only 1-2 hours to prepare our backpacks.

I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть фото I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть картинку I travelled around the world 205. Картинка про I travelled around the world 205. Фото I travelled around the world 205However, I can promise you that when we were preparing our round the world trip between 2012 and 2013, we had absolutely no idea what we were going to be able to put in our backpacks and what could be useful on the roads (and that’s quite normal since we had never travelled so long with a backpack before).

It must be said that it is a tricky exercise to choose your equipment for a round the world trip. On the one hand, we want to have the gear to face all types of conditions and situations, but on the other hand we are limited by the weight we can carry on our back. So we devoted an entire chapter of our ebook to the essential equipment for a round the world trip. We listed everything we took on the trip (backpack, clothes, equipment, electronics) and commented each time on our opinion of each object after returning from the trip.

Checklist and Planing

So we agree on this one: you still have to think about a lot of things when you prepare a round the world trip. and frankly for some people it can be quite impressive or even discouraging. But don’t panic, with a little organization and thinking about the right things at the right time, we guarantee that it’s not that complicated:). The best thing is to make a small planning of the things to do to prepare the trip by starting about 1 year before the planned date. And as we are very nice, we have created for you the ideal planning of the preparations for a round the world trip in the form of a checklist starting one year before the departure until the D-day.

Which camera should you choose to travel the world

Since Ben is totally passionate about photography and also because we receive a lot of questions about it, we wrote a big article to explain all the important criteria to know before choosing a camera. So we really recommend you to read it before you make your camera choice for your round the world trip.

But let’s face it, if you go on a long trip, you will certainly find yourself choosing between 3 types of cameras:

The best mobile apps for travelers

So here I’ll get right to the point and tell you only about the applications that you’re really going to use a lot during your round the world trip (but who knows if we’ll write a more complete article on the subject)

Maps.me: This application has become a must have for travellers and frankly it would have saved us a few misadventures if it had existed at the time of our world tour (yes we are oldies. maps.me did not yet exist during our trip;) ). Maps.me is in our opinion the best offline map application (it works even without an internet connection). The maps are very detailed (they are based on Open Street Map) and you have the possibility to draw routes, use it in navigation mode (for the car), add points of interest, use it for hiking etc. In addition you will find a lot of information added by travellers such as restaurants, hotels, points of interest etc. The must of the must we tell you!

While traveling around the world: our tips

Here you are! You just left and you are finally on your way to the world #yeaahhhhh! But as you will see, travelling around the world is not always easy ;). You will have to find accommodation during your trip, be on the move (almost) constantly, feed yourself, do your laundry, do your visas along the way, find activities and places to visit etc. #SuchAHardLife 🙂

So to make your life easier during your round the world trip, we have decided to list below all the tools / sites / services that we find useful and that have made our life easier during all our travels (round the world trip and after). Because it must be said that the purpose of such a trip is not to spend all your time organizing and looking for information. the goal is simply to get the most out of this unique experience.

Backpacking: How to find a place to stay

By the way, if it makes you feel any better, we were also afraid to sleep a few nights under bridges or in the street before going on a world tour (and guess what. it never happened ;)).

I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть фото I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть картинку I travelled around the world 205. Картинка про I travelled around the world 205. Фото I travelled around the world 205some of the places we spent the night on our round the world trip

There are different options for your stay while travelling:

Hôtels, Hostels, Guesthouses, Youth Hostels.

The most traditional way to spend a night while travelling around the world is simply to pay for your accommodation and this is what we have done most of the time. In some countries, we didn’t even bother to book in advance (as in Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia. ). Why? because it’s just suuuuper easy to find a room on the spot, plus not having a booking allows you to compare the options and find a better price (a concept that does not exist in Europe for example;)). In other countries (such as China, or South America) we usually booked in advance. When we book in advance we usually do it 1 or 2 days in advance and we use the following apps:

New to airbnb? Do not hesitate to use our referral link. By following this link you’ll get a discount on your first booking and we’ll get a small discount on our next booking as well!

Couchsurfing or sleeping at a local’s house

So that was also a great novelty for when leaving for our world tour. Couchsurfing is a website that connects travellers who are looking for accommodation with local people who agree to provide them with free accommodation (in a room or on their sofa). The idea is to share a moment with the hosts over a meal, to meet new people, to discuss everyone and nothing (so don’t do couchsurfing if you don’t want to socialize a minimum;) )

We started by welcoming travellers into our apartment when we lived in Vienna (to test the concept as hosts and get some reviews on the site) and then we surfed some sofas in China, Ecuador or Finland and we always had very good experiences. It’s really a great way to meet new people, to exchange, to learn more about a place by talking to someone who lives there and we really recommend you to try it.

I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть фото I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть картинку I travelled around the world 205. Картинка про I travelled around the world 205. Фото I travelled around the world 205couchsurfing experience in China

And for those who travel by bike, there is also the website called Warmshower which works as couchsurfing but for cyclists.

Doing Home exchange

We have never done it personally because you have to own an apartment or a house but we know several travellers who have tested the concept (the best known site for this is HomeExchange). It is a very good way when you are a homeowner to discover a new place at a lower cost with all the comfort of a house.

Work in echange of accomodation

For example, during our world tour we translated a website for a Lodge in the Ecuadorian Amazon in exchange for a week’s accommodation (as this lodge was clearly not in our budget range at the time, it was a win-win situation). So even if this were done spontaneously, there are also many websites that could help you find these kinds of arrangements:

Sleeping on night buses

I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть фото I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть картинку I travelled around the world 205. Картинка про I travelled around the world 205. Фото I travelled around the world 205During our world tour we almost became night bus experts :). If we had a long trip to make between 2 places, we almost always preferred the night bus option, which saved us one night in a hotel. So let’s face it, it’s rarely the best nights of sleep 😉 (especially in Asia where buses are sometimes quite old-fashioned) but we also had very good experiences with some companies in South America where the seats almost turn into perfectly fine beds.

Sleeping in airports

Often with cheap flights or round-the-world tickets, you will find yourself having to fly super early in the morning or transiting for 14 hours in an airport. We when we find ourselves in these kinds of situations (still now) well we don’t hesitate for a second and we sleep at the airport;) (this can save some money, plus let’s face it, most of the time airport hotels are quite crappy or totally overpriced.)).

During our 7 years of travel we spent more than 15 nights in different airports around the world. In order to help you prepare for your first night in an airport, we’ve prepared a detailed blog post with all our best tips and tricks to spend a good night of sleep.

Sleeping in a tent

We rarely spent the night in official camp site during our round the world trip (if I remember correctly only on Easter Island and in a few places in South America) but on the other hand we did a lot of camping / bivouacs during the hikes over several days that we did around the world.

These itinerant adventures remain among our best travel memories and you are really encouraged to embark on this kind of adventure during your round the world trip (and if you are not really convinced yet or do not know where to start to embark on this kind of adventure, read this article). To inspire you here are some examples of treks / adventures we did during our world tour:

Transportation Methods: how to get from A to B?

There are quite a few different ways to travel between two places during a round the world trip and I think we can say that we have tested a good part of it. Here is a small non-exhaustive list to give you some ideas;)

Travel safe

Until now we’ve always been very lucky on our travels and nothing serious has happened to us yet (no robberies or assaults nor serious injuries). However, we must admit that we had some fears before our world tour about some South American destinations that have a «bad reputation» (thanks to the media;)). But we quickly realized that by being a little careful and applying certain rules, we could greatly reduce the risk of problems when traveling. If you want more information on this subject, we invite you to read our articles about safety in South America and the risks associated with travels.

Money and currency management while travelling

We told you a little above how to avoid bank fees around the world (by choosing the right bank before leaving) but we didn’t really explain how we managed our money while travelling. Well, there’s nothing really wicked about it;)

Food: what to eat while traveling

Probably the thing you will do most often during your world tour and which will often be a source of pleasure, new flavours but sometimes also of some suffering 😉 Eat!

I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть фото I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть картинку I travelled around the world 205. Картинка про I travelled around the world 205. Фото I travelled around the world 205some of the food we had on our trips around the world

Obviously we also got sick once or twice. but it’s part of the trip and I doubt that even with a lot of care you can avoid all potential stomach disorders during your whole round the world trip;)

Visa requirements

Obtaining visas during a round-the-world trip will sometimes be a bit constraining, but overall we advise you not to worry too much about that because in most cases, you will be able to do them quietly during your trip when you arrive in the country. But here are some things you will need to think about when it comes to visas during the trip:

Internet while traveling

For all these different cases, the solution is to subscribe to a VPN for your trip. If you want more details on this subject and why a VPN solves all these problems, I recommend you to read this article. Otherwise you can subscribe to Express VPN (which we also use and pay for) which is one of the few VPNs that still works correctly in China for example.

I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть фото I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть картинку I travelled around the world 205. Картинка про I travelled around the world 205. Фото I travelled around the world 205browse safely using a VPN

Hiking and trekking around the world

You will have probably noticed it but we have become hiking addicts 🙂 (be it for one day or over more days with our tent). and guess when we caught the virus. During our round the world trip, of course 😉

Furthermore, walking allows you to discover a place gently and freely and very often far from the crowds. And since during a round the world trip you have time to embark on this kind of adventure, it would be silly not to give it a try 🙂

But we realize that starting the first time on a hike of several days with all your stuff on your back can be a little scary. So we have prepared a complete article on how to prepare an autonomous trek during your round the world trip. Otherwise you can also take a look at our gear when we hiked across Switzerland. it’s very similar.

And if it’s the bivouac that frightens you, we have also written a super complete guide about everything you need to know to leave for a bivouac adventure (equipment, respect for nature, advice etc. ).

Learn a new language while traveling

After traveling 9 months through China and Southeast Asia, we were tired of not being able to talk to the locals (or only in English with people who wanted to try to sell us stuff;) ). So once we arrived on the South American continent, we decided to take the time to learn a little Spanish in order to have more contact with the locals. This decision was certainly one of the best of our round the world trip and changed a lot of things for the rest of our trip.

There are 2 ways to learn a language during a round the world trip:

You will see that once you can speak a little bit of the language of the country in which you are travelling, the experience will be completely different.

I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть фото I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть картинку I travelled around the world 205. Картинка про I travelled around the world 205. Фото I travelled around the world 205during our spanish classes in Ecuador

Work and travel

Working around the world can also be a great way to finance or extend your trip. For example, many travellers take advantage of the fact that you can earn a lot of money in Australia to fill the bank account between Asia and South America. But of course with digitalization there is a growing list of jobs that allow you to travel while working a little. And as we are nice, we have prepared a small non-exhaustive list of jobs that allow you to travel right here.

Doing Laundry

We left for our trip full of good intentions with our multifunctional soap that could clean us as much as our clothes. So we certainly used this soap, but only once on our clothes ;). The thing is that there are so many cleaning services or washing machines available in the Guesthouse that we did our laundry by hand only once in the whole trip!

Obviously maybe you will have more courage than us but as far as we are concerned, we didn’t last long with the laundry in hand and we chose the 100% lazy option;)

Tips and tricks to take nice travel pictures

You have followed our advice above and found the right camera for you, here are some very simple tips to improve the quality of your photos based on our experience:

Coming home after a long time on the roads

You have certainly already heard it or read it on the internet:

Going around the world is easy but it’s coming home that is difficult!

And yet I swear to you that for us the return was not that difficult. It’s all a question of state of mind! If you can keep the positive momentum you had while traveling, if you come back with lots of new projects and objectives, we are sure that the return from such a trip can be very well experienced.

Traveling around the world at once is often a cheaper option than breaking it down into segments. The secret is to plan carefully and purchase the ticket well in advance. The cost is more than made up for by the amazing experience of seeing many places in a short period of time and the memories you’ll have for a lifetime. Here are some tips for how to travel around the world.

I can’t believe, 365 days have passed since we started our nomadic life! Love and Road is celebrating 1 year of life, 1 year of traveling around the world. The biggest life decision we have ever made, and we never imagined we would be so happy with it! So raise your glass and have a drink with us! Now it’s time to look back and realize how far we have gone!

In October 2014 I wrote our first Love and Road review, six months traveling around the world. The post was written during a bus trip from Pamukkale to Cappadocia in Turkey. This time I’m putting my ideas together on a train trip from Amsterdam to Berlin, and from Berlin to Barcelona [you can include some awesome parties between my work]. Not sure why, but long trips make me more thoughtful and the stunning landscape passing by my window makes me realize how lucky I am.

I believe you already know how this story started, our wake-up call, how we sold everything, packed our bags and left Brazil. So now let’s go to the point: our travel costs and secrets of 1 year traveling around the world. How we did, how much we have spent, best moments, curiosities and misadventures. Laughs, tears, fears, and achievements. A true roller coaster of emotions with breathtaking views from different corners of the world. Now I can proudly say that Rob and I are professional travelers, digital nomads, travel writers, and happy people!

How to travel around the world? Always searching for the cheapest and smartest way!

To cross all the 15 countries, we traveled by different methods. Our backpacking trip around the world can be split in:

To search for the best prices for flights we use Skyscanner, it´s perfect to compare routes and fares. Most of our train trips were done in Europe with Eurail Pass, super easy, flexible and we could travel everywhere with just one ticket. Bus and boats are usually run by local companies, so the best way is to check with travel agents or at bus/boat terminals. For car rentals have a look at Discover Cars. What we like about them is that they don’t have hidden fees, so you can book without surprises.

Long term travel X Shopping X Packing

The world is our address, but our house is tiny, tiny. Everything needs to fit in two 50L backpacks and two 5L small front bags. That’s it, nothing more!! Clothes, shoes, toiletries and electronic stuff. Talking about shoes, our friend Sarah put together great tips on how to choose the best travel shoes. Said that you already assumed that we can´t buy souvenirs or new clothes everywhere we go. All our purchases need to be done wisely, and every time we buy something new, an old one needs to go away. That´s what I call a minimalist style. 😉

We can’t accumulate stuff, nor carry an extra backpack. Our backpacks can only weigh 15 kg [the weight allowed on most of the low-cost airline companies]. So what did we do with our used stuff? We donated. We put everything in plastic bags and give it to people on the streets. A simple way to help and say thanks for all the blessings we received during the year.

So far, in this 1 year of traveling around the world we bought:

Rob – 4 T-Shirts + 2 pair of jeans + underwear + socks + 2 jumper + more jackets [He lost two jackets this year] + gloves + 2 pair of runners.

Nat – 4 tops + 2 pair of flat sandals + 1 skirt + 1 pair of jeans + 2 legging + 1 jacket + gloves + woolen hat + 1 pair of a fashion Converse + 1 pair of flip-flops.

When we left Asia at the beginning of April, we bought some warm clothes to face the springtime in Europe. Thank God we got more jackets and gloves because in April the weather was pretty chilly on the old continent. For the first time on this trip around the world, we got temperatures below 5ºC. To travel light you always need to think about the weather of the places you will travel to, spring and summer are definitely the best seasons for backpackers.

1 MacBook Air [Rob´s old notebook stopped working while we were in Bangkok 🙁 ]

1 Power Strip [one of the most clever and useful purchases. We became heroes at airports and stations]

1 Computer charger

I’m a nomad but never a dirty and smelly traveler [keep this in mind when you travel]. During 1 year of traveling around the world, I managed to keep some of my everyday beauty routines – body moisturizer, facial cream, and my black/grey nail polish… Not just me, Rob is also looking after himself… Age is coming!

2 Dry Fast Kingcham Towels

This past year was dedicated to learning about travel and blogging, so all our energy was focused on exploring the world and write about it. Among the many online books and articles we read, three of them have a special place in our bags [these are the only printed books we bought. Sometimes we are old school]

Medical issues in a nomadic lifestyle

After 1 year of traveling the world, I’m the one who got sick more times. On our journey, we had some
scary moments.

I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть фото I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть картинку I travelled around the world 205. Картинка про I travelled around the world 205. Фото I travelled around the world 205

Rob – 6 (3 times flu, cold sore crises, diarrhea and a twisted ankle)

Nat – 9 (I won. Back pain, mosquito bites allergy, urinary infection, keen injury, 2 times flu, diarrhea and migraine crises)

Most of the problems were sorted out with medicines we bought at the local pharmacy. We have travel insurance but didn’t need to use it. Although when I got really sick in Boracay, Philippines, we contacted our travel insurance to ask how we should proceed in case I needed to be removed from the island. World Nomads assisted us with everything. Luck me, the doctor solved my problem at the local clinic. More about international travel insurance here.

Impressions from the Road

» Food – As much as we love Italian food, the title of best food goes to the mouth-watering Papaya Salad we ate in Thailand.

» City – Barcelona is still on the top of our favorite cities. It has everything we love!

» BeachBoracay Island. My favorite is Puka Shell and Rob’s is the White Beach. One word can describe the Philippines: Paradise!

» Best Party – Hard to choose, but the unpretentious Best Bar at Khao San Road stole our hearts and feet. Many nights dancing with good music, cheap drinks and awesome people. I´d say Berlin comes in second place!

Long-term travel is made of people, not places!

This is definitely not a travel resource, it´s more our impression from the people we met. In 1 year of traveling around the world we made many friends, some just for a few days others for a lifetime. Each one has made a special contribution to our story, helped us to be better people, to travel wisely or blog with more professionalism. I don’t have words to say how thankful we are for meeting you, new and old friends. I’m sure we’ll catch up soon, somewhere in this beautiful world, because friendship is stronger than distance and time!

» Most Handsome Men – Dutch [OMG. ]

» Most Beautiful Women – Dutch [I think there are no ugly people there]

» Friendly People – Pinoy. Filipinos are the most friendly and helpful people we ever met. SALAMAT.

» People with strange behavior – In Porto [Portugal] people talk to themselves all the time.

» Party Animal People – Spanish and Berliner. Different styles of parting but both of them know how to have fun!

The dark side of a nomad life

Some people think that being a full-time traveler is just fun, parties and beach time. Actually, our travel adventure goes much further than just joy and happiness. Doubts, fears, sadness, and homesickness are feelings that haunt us from time to time.

During this year we lost one of our cats and the other one is battling cancer. She is with Rob´s parents and I´m sure they are giving her lots of love and cuddles. The feeling of being far away hurts, and it makes me think that if something bad happens with our beloved family we’ll be too far to help them.

Money issues are always on our way too. As our long-term travel is funded by our savings, our money is running out. Every day we try to find ways of earning some cash and make the blog our main income. [So please, help us keep the blog running by booking your hotels, flights, tours and insurance here on the blog].

Worst Moment of Traveling

The worst moment in 1-year backpacking around the world was when we crossed the border from Thailand to Cambodia. It was our second trip to Cambodia and after 7 hours on the bus we refused to pay a bribe to the Cambodian Immigration Officer. We knew he was charging everybody more than the correct amount of money and we said “No”. As a consequence they held our passport for 1 hour, we couldn’t leave the border or go back to Thailand. We felt threatened and unsafe. In the end, after a lot of discussions, they let us go.

It’s not about money. It is about principles, about right and wrong. We had money to pay the bribe but we refuse to do it.

Best moments of traveling around the world

It´s not easy to choose the best moment, during this 1 year of traveling around the world so many things happen, so many dreams came true, adventures of a lifetime and experiences that transformed us deeply. After a long talk, we figured out that our Best Moment was the day we started traveling, the day we left our comfort zone and faced the nomadic life. Our best moment is the day Love and Road was born, the beginning of our adventure.

We are not ashamed to say: we have regrets

It was our first week in Thailand, we were overwhelmed by the beauty of the culture and style of life in Chiang Mai. As silly tourists we booked a day tour including rafting, hiking to waterfalls and Elephant ride. That was an awful decision! I regret we booked the riding elephant tour. At the moment was fun, but after I discovered what they do with the animals and how they are horribly treated.

Lesson learned, now I always try to check the background of the tour company we choose. Elephants Farms in Thailand are a big issue and many animals are in danger. If you want to be in contact with these beautiful giants you can visit rehabilitation centers, help and learn. Nomad is Beautiful wrote an amazing article about Elephants and Tourism in Thailand.

What makes us proud:

We have done so many things in this 1 year of traveling that I´m happy with who we are and what we have achieved. One thing that makes us really proud is that every place we came back, like Bangkok, Istanbul, Reggio Emilia, and many others, we had an open door from a friend. People we met during this journey that keep helping us, treating us as family and friends. No words to express how happy and blessed we feel… This is what travel and friends are all about. Thanks so much for believing in us and on our dreams… Grazie, Merci, Gracias, Salamat, Tesekkurler….

Lessons from a long travel journey

Travel changes you! No doubt about it! During this past year, Rob and I learned to be more tolerant and respectful. When you get in touch with different cultures, religions and people, you discover that we are all the same, a person full of dreams, fears and seeking happiness. Our nationality, our color, sexual choices… Nothing matters. We are the same and we need to love and respect each other! When you let the prejudice go you discover that life can be easier, lighter and happier. This is the second lesson: Try your best to be happy and simple. I´m sure you won’t regret it. Simple things can make a big change in our daily life!

Something called relationship – Traveling the world with a partner

After 1 year of traveling around the world together, we are still alive and in love!! So I must say our recipe is working!! What is our love secret? Nothing special, just respect, share the same dreams and support each other. We had bad moments, sadness, crying crises [that was me 🙁 ] and joy… All the time we were together sharing the feelings and looking for the bright side. Not easy to live 24 hours together for 365 days… But with love and fun everything is possible. [I don’t want to be cheeky, but I also think that together we are awesome!! 😀 ]

The Bill! How much does it cost to travel around the world?

Our cost of 1 year traveling around the world: [all the figures are in US dollars and it´s for two persons]

During this 1 year of backpacking, we stayed longer in Europe, Turkey, and Thailand. In all of them for more than 2 months. Here is how much we spent on each one:

We traveled a lot and managed to keep our money under control! Congratulations to us!! On the blog you can find the breakdown of our costs by countries, so far our series “How much Does it Cost to Travel to” shows the costs of travel in Portugal and the Philippines. During the next months, we’ll be publishing more posts about our expenses around the world. Stay tuned 😉

Time flies when we are having fun! It doesn’t feel like one year has gone by, but when I look back I´m proud to see how many things we have done! How many places we visited, people we met, the cultures we experienced and how we became better persons and travelers. I dreamed of this life, but I never imagined it could be so amazing and full of surprises. How many times have you imagined around-the-world trip and then gave up on your dream because you were sure that you couldn’t possibly afford it? The good news is whether you’d love to see the world on your own with a friend that’s someone special or your entire family it will cost you a lot less than you think. In this episode of graph worthy we will look at various factors affecting your travel cost and how much you need to save to take a year break and travel around the world. Subscribe to us and click on the bell button to be the first to watch our new videos.

When we think about travelling around the world we usually imagine a one-week overseas vacation and simply multiply the cost for our imaginary long-term trip. However, long-term trip costs a lot less per day than your typical vacation plus if you plan smartly you can really reduce the costs.

You’ll need to think about the countries you wish to visit, the accommodations and your mode of transportation how often you move between the locations and your desired tours and activities. Seasonality is a huge factor while considering the overall cost of the around-the-world trip. Prices in a given location can vary wildly depending on the time of the year you’re there.

Flight – If you plan the routes optimally the average flight ticket cost is in the 2500 to 3500 range per person including taxes. Here are some cool apps you can explore to book the cheapest flight tickets. Also to get some cool tips you can check out our other video on flight ticket hacks.

Accommodation is the second most expensive part of your travel. Budget planning your accommodations wisely saves a lot of money overall during long term travel. Most people stay in two or three-star accommodations, hostels or apartment rentals, though, there are exceptions but accommodations in order of least expensive to most expensive are. For our budget, we will plan twenty-five to forty-five dollars per night in inexpensive regions and ninety to a hundred and forty dollars in expensive ones. Check out these applications to find the perfect accommodation in your budget.

Food is the next key parameter of your overall trip budget reducing your restaurant visits and preparing your own meal will save money. You can expect one dollar per meal per person if you are preparing it yourself even at expensive regions. Whereas a typical restaurant visit in an expensive region can go up to ten to thirty dollars.

Local transportation – local commute though a small part of the expense can be a major cost saver if you travel slower and take public transports the cost can come down significantly.

Activities these are things like safaris, monument tours, adventure and activities. These activities can range from five to 200 dollars each depending on the activity and location. Here is a table of actual travel cost breakdown by a traveller who travelled the world for a year. Most travelers who’ve done these trips on an economy budget estimate somewhere between 20,000 and 30,000 dollars and for the sake of argument let’s average a comfortable RTW year-long trip at 24,000 which is around 2,000 per month. Taking everything into consideration as you can see around the world trip doesn’t have to cost you a fortune and for many people, it’s cheaper to be on the road than staying at home. Speaker 1 – I’m really excited about going on holiday next Friday. Unfortunately, there’s going to be a bus and Tube strike that day, so I just hope I don’t have to wait too long for a taxi. If I don’t get to Milan until just before take-off, they probably won’t let me on the plane and then I’ll miss my connection in Rome, so I’m really nervous about the whole thing. Even if the flight’s delayed, I still have to check in about an hour beforehand, so I’m going to book a taxi now – just to be on the safe side – and hope the traffic jams aren’t too bad.

Speaker 2 – I’m dreading the journey on the motorway – the forecast isn’t very good for tomorrow. Getting there a bit late doesn’t worry me, but if it’s raining, the roads can be very dangerous. If you have to stop suddenly, you can be in trouble. We could go by train, but we’ve got so much luggage and the trains are always so crowded this time of year. Sally says we should fly, but it’s too expensive, and it takes so long to get to the airport that it’s just not worth the extra money.

Speaker 3 – I’m not really looking forward to crossing the Channel. We were going to take the fast ferry but if the weather’s too bad, they just cancel the crossing. I hate it when they do that. So we’re booked on the slower ferry, but I have to say, it’s not my favourite means of transport. It’s not that I’m afraid of accidents – it’s actually a very safe way to travel. The trouble is I’m not a very good sailor. I get really sick if the crossing’s rough. I’ve tried taking pills but they don’t seem to have any effect.

Speaker 4 – I can’t wait to go on holiday tomorrow. I’m thinking of taking the underground to the terminal. I wanted to take a taxi but the traffic’s so bad at that time of day that I know it would take ages – and it’s very expensive because it’s quite a long journey. I don’t actually mind travelling by underground, but for some reason, something always seems to go wrong for me. I don’t like the long escalators and I always seem to lose my ticket – but luckily not my passport! – before I reach my destination. Maybe I’d be better off going by bus.

Speaker 5 – I’m flying to the USA next week. I do a lot of flying, so it’s not something I panic about. I know some people really aren’t keen on the thought of being on a plane, but not me. No – what really gets me is making sure that I’ve got all the right things in the right places. However hard I try, I always seem to end up with something in my hand luggage I’m not allowed to take on board with me – then there’s all that stress of emptying everything out and feeling bad because you’ve got it all wrong yet again.

A Little RTW Budget… How Much Does it Cost to Travel the World for a Year? (2022)

Last updated on June 18, 2022

When I left on my first round the world trip, I asked veteran travelers a key question: How much does it cost to travel around the world? It was the single biggest factor impacting my trip length and destinations, and the number of things that impact a long-term travel budget are far different than a two-week European vacation. Estimates varied wildly, and knowing where my own around the world trip would fall in that spectrum was a great unknown. I had no idea how long my travel savings, my freelance income, and travel blogging to would keep me on the road, so over that first year, I tracked every single dollar I spent while traveling.

Let’s dive into a very detailed breakdown of what it costs to actually travel around the world for one-year trip—the hard costs associated with around the world travel, and the factors that most dramatically impact your travel budget. I’ve included some notes on the impact of the Covid pandemic on costs—from the dramatic inflation hitting the U.S. and the UK to increased costs to test for Covid at the borders, your costs are going to be higher if you travel in 2022, and likely into 2023 as well.

How Much Does Traveling the World Cost?

My Personal Round the World Trip

Then I decided to keep traveling. I’ve been on the road since 2008, still “traveling” as of 2022 (the Covid pandemic but a damper on that, of course), although from my homebase in Barcelona, Spain.

In the years since I originally posted my cost breakdown for world travel, other backpackers have loved the precise and meticulous details of just how much I spent throughout a year of active world travel. And even with rising global food costs a decade later, people still travel on similar budgets—yes, so many elements impact travel costs that you can still travel the world for the same price as a trip 14 years ago (more on how that’s possible later).

Let’s dive into the good stuff. The following tables and charts further outline my around the world trip costs including the country-by-country expenses and budget.

Just want the cold hard costs? Navigate my Google spreadsheet by the countries listed at the bottom of my full World Travel Budget.

My Total Costs to Travel the World for a Year

Visas$230
Pre-Trip Travel Gear$484.50
Vaccines$$606
Extra Costs$493.33

How to Much Will YOUR Dream Trip Cost?

Finding a way to travel the world is a mental obstacle as much as a financial one. Every situation is different, but I believe that if you truly prioritize travel, then it’s possible to plan and execute an around the world trip. The problem is, there’s crappy information out there about how to make it happen—just as many bloggers don’t really share straight costs to travel the world. Many bloggers have shared posts with a handful of tips about how much they saved for their dream trip, but they don’t break down how they arrived at that final figure. You may read this information and see my budget, but it leaves you wondering if your own world travels would cost the same.

For that reason, I wrote two entire guides to address your current hurdle. One is about creating a realistic anticipated budget for your trip. The other is about saving for world travel.

BUDGET

How much will your dream trip cost? I wrote this guide to specifically answer the most common question I was emailed by readers: how much will a specific route/itinerary costs. In it, I share comprehensive and thoroughly practical advice about understanding trip budgets and understanding your own style of travel. The guide is a full treatise on how to estimate what your dream trip will cost and it includes case studies from other long-term travelers who tracked their trip budgets. I’ve spent eight years on the road, and nearly that long talking with with other travelers about how they budget for travel. Using the aggregate of their knowledge and experience, I’ve outlined a road-map to taking a long-term trip. I wrote this guide to empower travelers and travel dreamers anywhere in the world with the tools to plan their trip. The guide breaks down average traveling costs for the world’s most traveled destinations, which you can use with the fully customizable Trip Budget Worksheet to create an accurate anticipated budget for your dream trip. Available on Kindle, ePub, and PDF.

SAVE

True wealth is having the freedom to do what you want with your life. Many travel dreamers get waylaid by the financial side of life. If you’re new to personal finance, or lost about how to start saving for a big goal, this book distills hard-learned information into easily actionable steps specifically targeted at giving travel dreamers tools to become financially literate. This book provides a thorough deep-dive into the principles of saving money, common obstacles, overcoming debt, and the tenets of strong personal finance. It offers a streamlined process to create substantial changes in your financial life. If money is your primary obstacle to leaving on a long-term trip, this guide breaks down exactly the shifts you can make to change your financial situation. Many travelers look at my adventures and experiences these past 12 years that I’ve traveled and they dream of also traveling through the cultures, stories, and conversations. This guide gives you the tools to move the needle from dreaming to doing. Available on Amazon Kindle or as a PDF bundle with the budget book.

How to Decide on Your Final World Travel Budget?

Travel was my bootcamp for life. My around the world trip was the single best investment in both my personal growth and my career. Throughout life we are presented with a series of choices—each has the ability to help us create the life we dream of living. I am forever glad I chose to travel our beautiful world.

Creating an accurate anticipated budget for your world tour is an important step—you certainly don’t want to plan for a year but run out of funds in month eight! Each person has different goals, a unique trip itinerary, and differing travel styles. These factors can create significant differences in the total cost of a round the world trip.

Assess How Much You’ve Saved for World Travel

A round the world trip is not as expensive as you assume. Most anyone reading this post has the ability to save for travel if it’s a true priority. My family is quite poor and I put myself through college with merit-based scholarships. Instead of counting on help from family, I budgeted for the trip, and I traveled with the budget I had—not the one I wish I had.

Before leaving, I purged everything I owned and saved ruthlessly in the countdown months. When calculating if I could afford my trip around the world, I even accounted for my student-loan and medical credit debt repayments (because yes, I was actually in a fair bit of debt). I took on side-hustles to sock away money. And then I worked on freelance SEO remotely for the entire year.

Decide Your Route & Speed Around the World

Determine the Types of Countries You’ll Visit

If You’ll Eat Local Food, Street Foods, & Shop in Markets

How you eat on your travels impacts your bottom line. Eat locally from mom and pop restaurants, and sample eats from street food stalls. Contrary to many assumptions from first glance, these locations are perfectly safe so long as you adhere to a few standard food safety practices. Local food is a window into the culture, so dig deep and eat like the locals, asking the vendors questions and learning more about each country’s food peculiarities. Also, when traveling in Western countries, shop for groceries and prepare your own breakfast at the very least.

Read: How to Eat Street Food Without Getting Sick and buy the Food Traveler’s Handbook to learn even more about safely enjoying street eats

Factoring Covid and the Pandemic into you Round the World Trip

The fact is, although we all hoped that 2021 would turn the corner on the pandemic, that just hasn’t been the case. While there is every hope 2022 will mark a fresh start, even once wealthier and Western countries have moved on, this will not be the case in vast swathes of the rest of the world. Vaccine iniquities and underdeveloped healthcare systems mean that many countries will continue to struggle to wrangle Covid throughout 2022, and likely into 2023 as well. If you’re planning world travels, that means you should be prepared for additional obstacles at the border, as well as increased costs to test or meet Covid requirements. What might this look like:

In short, assess the trip you have planned, and read up on Covid policies. Where you choose to travel should likely remain fluid once you set out so you can adapt on the road.

The bottom line: Understand your route, travel style, and goals before you can develop an accurate anticipated budget for travel.

A project on popular ways of travelling in Zetland.

Imagine that you are doing a project on popular ways of travelling in Zetland. You have found some data on the subject-the results of the opinion polls (see the table below)

Comment on the data in the table and give your opinion on the subject of the project.

Popular ways of travellingNumber of respondents (%)
By car40
By train29
By bus20
By plane8
Hitchhiking3

Write 200-250 words

Use the following plan:

Recent studies show that people use different ways to travel around the world. To learn more about it, I have found some information on popular ways of travelling with people living in Zetland. As a part of my project, I have analyzed some data and come across some interesting findings.

According to the data presented in the table below, humans in Zetland choose different means of transport. The most preferred transport is related to roads and railways. The majority of respondents prefer travelling by car (40 %). It looks like people choose a comfortable and cheap option. Almost a quarter of those surveyed choose bus to enjoy travelling (20%). Hitchhiking is the least popular way of travelling, only 3%.

It is noticeable that there is a substantial difference between the most favoured and the least favoured ways of travelling: cars are ten times popular than planes (40% and 8 % respectively) By comparison, the difference between the figure for train and bus is not so striking: it is less than 10%.

Although people in Zetland choose different ways of travelling, globally people use cars instead of public transport. It can cause traffic congestion in the cities. The best solution to this problem is to make public transport comfortable and decrease the prices of petrol to make public transport cheaper.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that the best way to travel around the world is by plane because it saves the time which people can spend on sightseeing and strolling across narrow streets of other countries.

365 Days: 20 things I Learned from Traveling Around the World

Travel for long enough and one day you wake up to realize: This is no longer a vacation, it’s your life.

Over one year ago I quit my job and decided to travel around the world. This was both a dream 10 years in the making and one of the best decisions I’ve ever made [photo: night train from Belgrade to Sofia].

In the last 12 months I learned a lot about long-term travel, what I need to be happy, and how to survive outside of the US. Many of these things can’t be learned at home or in a book, and while reading about them on the internet can only get you so far, a lot of people have asked me to explain how I’ve done it.

Well, here’s part of the answer.

“There’s no substitute for just going there.”
–Yvon Chouinard

My trip hasn’t been about sightseeing (although I’ve done that) as much as just being somewhere. The simple challenges of daily routine can be overwhelming: trying to eat, drink, and sleep in a place where nothing makes sense, you don’t speak the language, and where none of the basic comforts of home are available. It’s not easy, but if you want a fast-track to personal development, get on a plane.

When I was younger my dad often said ‘the hardest part is just getting out the door.’ And that may be the most important lesson of all: it’s too easy to get complacent at home and if you aren’t at least a little uncomfortable, you probably aren’t learning anything.

If you’ve already traveled extensively, you may get a kick out of this. If you haven’t, here are some reflections, tips, and advice about long-term travel on my one-year anniversary of life on the road:

#1) Most of the world’s people are friendly and decent.

Except for the French*.

Some stereotypes really hold up, but on average, most of the people I’ve met around the world are extremely polite, friendly, and helpful. They are generally interested why I chose to visit their home. They are eager to assist if it’s obvious I’m lost or in trouble. They’ll go out of their way to try to make sure I have a good stay in their country. And, contrary to what most Americans tend to think (see #3 below), they often don’t know much about the United States (or necessarily care).

Don’t be convinced before leaving that “everyone there is _______”. Show a modicum of respect to people and their culture and you’ll be blown away by what you get back. Try picking up a little of the local language. Just learning how to say ‘thank you’ can make a huge impact.

* Sorry, I couldn’t resist. To be fair, France is like everywhere else: most people are decent. It’s just that France has a particularly large proportion of bad apples the give the place a well-deserved reputation. I’ve met a lot of wonderful people in France but also a disproportionate number of assholes (not travelers generally, but residents of France). This isn’t based on a single trip nor is it restricted to Paris. Almost every non-French local in Europe agreed with me on this one.

#2) Most places are as safe (or safer) than home.

I remember confessing to my mother recently that I had a big night out in Budapest and stumbled back to my apartment at dawn. Her reaction was: “But don’t you worry about being drunk in a foreign country?”

Ha ha, not at all mom! I’ve never felt so safe!

The only place I’ve been violently mugged was in my home city of San Francisco. Many of the people I know there have been robbed at gunpoint, and on more than one occasion there were shootings in my neighborhood.

In one incident just a block away from my apartment (Dolores Park), a man was shot 5 times and somehow escaped, only to collapse about 10m from our front door. You can still see the blood stains on the sidewalk.

Turns out we actually live in a pretty dangerous country.

In over 365 days on the road, staying mostly in dormitory-style hostels and traveling through several countries considered ‘high-risk,’ the only incident I had was an iPhone stolen out of my pocket on the metro in Medellin, Colombia. I didn’t even notice and deserved it for waiving the damn thing around in the wrong part of town. Most people think that in a place like Colombia you’ll still get kidnapped or knocked off by a motorcycle assassin, but that’s not true. According to the locals I talked to (who grew up there), things have been safe there for at least ten years.

Caveat: This doesn’t give you a license to be stupid, and some places really warrant respect. Guatemala and Honduras, where there are major drug wars going on (and the Peace Corps recently pulled all of their volunteers), or Quito, Ecuador, where everyone I talked to had been robbed, are reasonably dangerous (I had no trouble in any of them).

In reality, based on the sort of mindless binge-drinking that happens in most travel hot spots, you’d expect travelers to get knocked off a lot more often. But if you pay attention and don’t do anything stupid, you’ll be fine.

#3) Most people don’t know (or care) what America is doing.

I think the whole America vs. the rest of the world debate has been summed up perfectly in this post:

I couldn’t have said it better:

Despite the occasional eye-rolling, and complete inability to understand why anyone would vote for George W. Bush, people from other countries don’t hate us either. In fact — and I know this is a really sobering realization for us — most people in the world don’t really think about us or care about us.

I’ve met people that didn’t even know that San Francisco (or California even) had a coastline (now there’s a sobering conversation for you. So much for thinking that’s the center of the world eh?).

One thing is true: Americans are not well represented on the travel circuit. It just doesn’t seem to be culturally important to us, unlike say, the Australians, who never go home.

#4) You can travel long-term for the price of rent and a round of drinks back home

My favorite question from friends at home has been: “how the HELL are you still traveling?”

Well, for what you spent at lunch I can live on for a whole day in Indonesia. That’s all there is to it.

– Average monthly rent for a shared apartment in San Francisco: $1100 per person.
– My average monthly expenditure during the last year of travel: $1200 / month*.

That’s $40 / day, and includes some ridiculous and totally auxiliary expenses. For example:

And so on. I also went out, a lot, and spent way to much money on alcohol.

Countries visited on this budget: Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Chile, Easter Island (Chile), Argentina, Uruguay, Santa Cruz (California), North Shore of Oahu, Belgium, France, Spain, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Austria, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Turkey

Totals: 6 months Central/S. America, 2 Months USA, 2 months W. Europe and 2 months E Europe).

You might be blown away by how cheap some ‘expensive’ places can be. The second cheapest hostel I stayed in (after Guatemala) was in Berlin, Germany, at €6 / night (

#5) Saving for a big trip is not as hard as you think.

Most people think I’m rich because I’ve been traveling for a year. What they don’t realize is that, although I didn’t leave at the time (this was 5 years ago), I was able to save enough money for this trip within a year and a half of graduating college.

Are there sacrifices to be made? Of course, but it’s worth it.

I plan to write more about how to save money in the future

#6) In most places, moving around is incredibly easy.

I rode buses from Honduras all the way to Uruguay. With a surfboard. And it was a cinch.

I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть фото I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть картинку I travelled around the world 205. Картинка про I travelled around the world 205. Фото I travelled around the world 205

Unlike the independent car culture of the US, people all over the world rely on some kind of bus service to get around.

In most places you can get from anywhere to just about anywhere else, and most of the time it doesn’t take more than a few minutes to figure out. Generally (outside the middle of peak tourist season in popular places) I haven’t bothered with reservations or pre-planning transportation routes. I just show up at the bus or train station and go.

I’ve ridden buses for hours into the middle of the Costa Rican jungle as well as through BFE in the Northern Chilean Andes. There’s almost always a group of locals who needs to get to where you’re going too. And if there’s no bus you can always hitchhike (this only happened once or twice on my entire trip).

It’s an eye-opener to see how some of the poorest countries on earth can still provide better public transportation than San Francisco.

#7) Every pound over 20 makes life worse.

There is virtually no reason to carry more than 20lbs (

9kg) of gear unless you’re going on a major trek or you have some serious sporting event in mind (like multi-day backpacking or cold weather sports). If you’re traveling in the summer you can get by on even less.

I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть фото I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть картинку I travelled around the world 205. Картинка про I travelled around the world 205. Фото I travelled around the world 205

Here’s the first key: Try only to do one thing on your trip. If you are hiking, just hike. If you are surfing, just surf. If you’re party backpacking and staying in hostels, just do that. Packing for every possibility is suicidal. You just can’t carry street clothes and backpacking gear in the same pack and expect to not have a million tons of crap.

I’ve travelled the last year with a carry-on sized 30L day-pack made for climbing (this means it’s made to properly handle weight). Right now, it’s only 2/3 full and loaded with exactly 20lbs of gear (which in my opinion is still too heavy). But I have some serious accessories in there including 3lbs of surfing equipment (for Indonesia), a 3lb laptop, as well as a GoPro video camera (0.5lb).

When most people pack for a trip, they make a list of things to pack and then try to figure out how to fit it all in. But the best way to choose a backpack is to find the bag you want to carry and then see what you can fit inside. Make sure the pack doesn’t weigh more than 3lbs by itself.

If you can get to less than 15lbs (

7kg) it will change your life. Imagine getting to a location and being able to walk around and site-see with all your gear. Incredible.

This is the other key: pack the 20% of gear and clothing that will cover 80% of possible travel scenarios (yet another manifestation of the 80/20 rule). If you end up saying “I might do _____” then get rid of it. Don’t take anything you won’t use with relative frequency unless it’s really expensive or hard to find on the road.

Get rid of everything you possibly can before you set out, and don’t be afraid to donate things or send them home along the way. Oh, and the easiest way to figure out your pack weight? Buy a cheap fish scale from Amazon.com.

A small pack also allows you to have a carry-on bag, even on super small planes. I can’t understate the importance of this.

Bottom line: Trust me, the longer you travel the less you want to carry.

#8) Long-term travel is not a vacation (it’s a full-time job).

After my first 6 months of traveling I went home for a break. To the surprise of my friends, I was completely spent, exhausted, and didn’t want to do much of anything.

“But you’ve been on vacation, you should feel great!”

Right. I guess you missed the 22 hour bus-ride where we took turns puking in the back because of altitude sickness and pisco-induced hangovers. Or maybe you didn’t make it to the last 15 hostels where sleeping before being black-out drunk is just not an option. (Sounds glamorous, doesn’t it!)

Planning and logistics also take an incredible amount of time and effort. Most downtime spent in a place when not sight-seeing is typically sucked up in researching the next destination, making reservations, planning logistics, and going through the dreaded ‘time budgeting’ process where you decide what you can reasonably see in the time available (and what you have to cut out).

Overall, it’s exhausting, and a great reason to consider traveling slowly (more on that later).

If you move quickly, don’t have any illusions about all the things you’re going to ‘get done’ in your down-time. Take a good book and just travel, that’s it.

#9) ‘Travelers’ and ‘Tourists’ are different.

You know what I mean.

Tourists exchange money for pre-packaged experiences. They consume experiences and move on without engaging with the local culture.

Travelers are there to see things, not buy them.

Travelers tend to be more involved. They may stay with locals, hang out with locals, try to learn the language, or just plain move slowly enough to really live and be where they are.

Sometimes I play ‘tourist’ but that doesn’t mean I see myself as one.

#10) Don’t worry about traveling alone (it’s better).

Although I’m a solo traveler I haven’t spent much more than a handful of days on the road alone. That’s because you meet people everywhere: in hostels, on buses, trains, planes, restaurants, trail-heads, monuments, etc. If you’re doing a standard travel circuit you’ll see the same people over and over again (most people don’t leave the Lonely Planet itinerary), and it isn’t uncommon to fall in with a large group of people who are all going the same way.

It’s so easy to meet people that I’m often stuck with the opposite problem: trying to get away from everyone. While I love all my new friends I need some downtime every so often.

Most travellers are uncommonly interested in meeting new people. That’s one of the big reasons they’re on the road. A simple ‘where are you headed’ has often turned into a new travel partner for weeks. And when it stops working you simply set off on your own again.

Afraid to go it alone? Don’t be. Go the the first big city in your destination country and hang out in the hostel lobby for a few days. I promise you’ll make new friends. This is why you should also stay in hostels. Don’t be afraid of sharing a room. It’s a small trade-off for the amazing people you’ll meet.

#11) Movement can be addictive (and this is not necessarily a good thing).

The ‘traveller’s rush’ that hits you upon arrival to a new place is like a drug. And like a drug, the more you expose yourself to it the more you want.

This can mean moving too fast or skipping out on places just to experience the ecstasy of arrival again. The results are obvious: less time in places you thought you wanted to see and ultimately, burnout. The tendency to try to cram more places into an overpacked schedule is often hard to control.

One trick I’ve found to deal with this is to have a minimum stay: 3 nights in every destination. This is enough time to see the place, relax, and get sorted before the next stop. It also means you’ll have to cut out some places if you’re tight on time. While I’ve had great one-night stops before (I’m looking at you, Belgrade) it isn’t sustainable or desirable to do too much of this.

Of course, some places aren’t what you expected either. If that’s the case, get the hell out of there and spend more time in a place you want to be.

#12) Don’t bank on paradise.

I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть фото I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть картинку I travelled around the world 205. Картинка про I travelled around the world 205. Фото I travelled around the world 205

Keep your expectations in check.

This isn’t easy, since you really want that place you’ve been dreaming about to be paradise. But like anything else, high expectations are a recipe for disappointment.

I spent 5 years in office jobs dreaming about getting back to Utila, the magical Scuba party-island off the coast of Honduras. When I finally got there, I was ready to leave after a week.

Turns out I didn’t really care about Scuba-diving as much as I thought, and there’s only so much you can do on a tropical island before you go nuts. At that time I also had new aspirations and a new skill: surfing. I ended up heading to El Salvador to surf some of the best waves of my life.

Expectations can also make or break a place. Most of the places I knew nothing about before arriving blew my mind. Most of the places I had high expectations for utterly failed to impress me (except for Chicama, the world’s longest wave, and Rome).

The other thing is that as you go through life the rules are always changing. By the time I arrived here in Bali–which has been a dream and one of the pinnacles of the trip–I had a small but growing online business that had become my #1 priority. Instead of rushing off to some deserted beach hut and surfing all day I’m obsessed with trying to find a place to live where I can get to fast internet at least a few times a week. Say what you will, but my priorities have totally changed (at least for the moment).

It also turns out that a lot of Bali is a tourist nightmare from hell. Or maybe it’s just getting harder for me to be as impressed by anything.

Also: Take recommendations with a grain of salt. Another person’s paradise might be your personal hell, and vice-versa. A close friend of mine thinks tropical beaches are the reason for existence. Well, unless there is wind or waves on them I’ll crack up after 3 days. Getting stuck on a deserted tropical island is my definition of hell-on-earth.

#13) Traveling doesn’t get ‘traveling’ out of your system.

If you’ve got this bug it’s not going away (sorry), but the obvious question is: why are we trying to get traveling out of our system, anyway?

Rolf Potts did a great job in Vagabonding of justifying not just travel as a lifestyle, but also a lifestyle that makes travel a non-negotiable ingredient. Whether that means saving for a big trip or just taking a few weeks a year the important thing is to make room in your life to keep traveling.

I was actually told on this trip ( 😉 if you’re reading this) that I needed to stop screwing around and ‘grow up.’ I think in our culture that means going back to the ‘real world’ of office jobs, succumbing to general complacency, and trying to enjoy two weeks off a year.

If that’s the case you can count me out.

The world is just too big and interesting to not be exploring.

#14) Eventually, you will need something real to do.

Most people think that I’ve spent the last year sipping Mai-Tais on the beach somewhere. Well, I tried that and after 4 days I started to lose it.

The sad and somewhat surprising truth about the myth of the deserted tropical island paradise is this: there is nothing to do on a deserted tropical island. As Harrison Ford drunkenly slurred once in that terrible but entertaining movie, ‘Honey… it’s an island. If you don’t bring it you ain’t gonna find it here.”

Despite popular belief, most people can’t just sit around doing nothing for an extended period of time. Especially Type-A American folks who I’ve been told are ‘goal-oriented’ and always trying to ‘get things done.’ It might be a cultural thing, but it’s more likely just human nature to want to be involved in something larger than yourself. (This also, by the way, is the death knell for the whole concept of retirement, as articulated so well in Tim Ferris’ 4-Hour WorkWeek).

The point of quitting a job to travel around the world is also not to do nothing, it’s to do something else. As Tim Ferris points out, ‘idle time is poisonsous,’ and believe me, when you’ve cut your ties with conventional society you’re going to have a few moments of serious self-flagellation. The endless ‘what I’m doing’ and ‘why am I doing this’ loop.

It’s true that the feeling of wanting to build/create/be a part of something can be deferred since traveling itself is a full-time job, and that simple fact can keep you satisfied for a long time. But after 6 months of moving around I was astonished to discover I was actually bored. I mean, really bored. There are only so many days that you can walk around looking at things, go to the beach, and party all night without starting to think that something’s missing.

What it boils down to is that eventually you’ll need need a project. Whether that means studying, concentrating on a sport, volunteering, working somewhere, starting an online business, or whatever, eventually you’ll have to find a creative or intellectual outlet to keep yourself sane. Which brings up the next point:

#15) Long-term happiness is a pretty complicated emergent property that has little to do with money.

I will probably kick myself later for publishing this, but what the hell, here goes:

If you studied any chemistry in school you may remember the concept of emergent properties: the difference between the dining-room table and this computer screen is simply the right mix of a bunch of elements. Put together the right pieces and the product spontaneously emerges from the matter it’s composed of.

Similarly, in my experience happiness is not derived from a single point source (although it can be temporarily) like a sudden infusion of cash or arriving at your dream destination. Instead, it takes a lot of things working in concert to keep me happy: it’s really the emergent property of a network of variables.

Unfortunately, most people seem to forget the network effect and focus on a single variable, like money. Sure, money can allow you to do things, but once basic needs are satisfied the correlation between money and happiness seems to drop off a cliff.

And here’s another punchline: most people whose luck or life-stage has allowed them to not be required to work seem to choose to anyway. I know a guy who retired at 26. What does he do now? Runs a firm for fun.

While I can’t speak for everyone, I’ve learned that I need the nearly perfect concert of 3-4 major variables before I can say that I’m ‘really happy’.

These have very little to do with money:

If this sounds cliche or too simple, try sitting on a beach somewhere and wonder why you’re not happy for a few weeks. It’s easy to forget the most basic things in life.

(The funny thing about having four simultaneous requirements is the violation of Sun Tzu’s Art of War: Never fight a battle on multiple fronts. Maybe you’ve figured it out already, in which case I’d love to talk to you about it, but whenever I get two things in order the third one drops out of the sky.)

#16) When you challenge a person’s assumptions it can really piss them off.

People get angry when I tell them you don’t have to buy into the system, that you can travel the world and do anything you want if you’re up for it.

The problem is that this statement challenges the basic assumptions that people have invested in over their entire lives–every decision, every action, every goal has depended on the stability of this conventional framework.

As I understand it from my limited study of neuroscience, these kinds of assumptions are firmly rooted in the brain’s neural network, and our cognitive framework (borrowing heavily from George Lakoff here) really doesn’t like being fucked with.

Lakoff at one point wrote that the neural framework is like a net: if you offer something up radically different from what a person expects it might just slip through. It’s almost like they can’t even process what you’re saying to them.

It’s also hard for people to imagine anything different from their experiences. Take the notion of precedence (hat tip to Dan Andrews): before the 4-minute mile was broken it was thought to be physically impossible. That is, until Roger Bannister ran a mile in under 4 minutes. Within two months two more runners had achieved the same feat, and whole slough of runners soon followed.

When you defy the status quo (even when you don’t make a big deal out of it. *cough*) you implicitly (although unintentionally) suggest to people back at home that their lives are based on a faulty assumptions. Don’t expect people to take this well, or to care or understand what you’re doing if you decided to cut out. They might get pissed off, the might act like you don’t exist, or they might actively call you out.

You can’t convince them that it’s the right thing to do either, because in all honesty, we all have a different idea of what the good life is.

#17) Travel slowly: Save money, avoid burnout, do more.

Going slowly is the key. The more time you have the more money you can save, for two major reasons:

I talked to one girl who flew around Europe just on discount airlines like RyanAir and EasyJet. She’d simply log in and see where the cheapest flight next week was. “Guess I’m going to Romania!” Not something you can do easily on an itinerary.

The most expensive part of traveling for me has typically been moving from point A to point B. Traveling like a maniac can be a lot of fun, but you’ll save money and get to really know places if you take your time.

#18) You can’t work and travel at the same time.

I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть фото I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть картинку I travelled around the world 205. Картинка про I travelled around the world 205. Фото I travelled around the world 205

For the remote-work inclined…

Ok, you sort of can, you just won’t ever get nearly as much done as you want to.

Let me clarify this for the uninitiated: obviously, you can work in the places you travel to, eg working as a SCUBA Divemaster or a Kiteboarding instructor, but my focus here is on location-independent internet work.

At this point I’ve worked all over the world on my laptop, and in order to get shit done I have to hunker down in one spot for at least a week. Try building/fixing things/growing an online business on the road and you’re going to just get irritated when you can’t finish anything in the 2-4 hour block you’ve set aside.

You also have no continuity if you’re constantly moving around. Dan Andrews of the Lifestyle Business Podcast nailed it when he said ‘you’ve got to find your 5 hours.’ All 4-Hour Workweek fantasies aside, if you want to build something you’d better find that 5 hours (or more) each day.

If you’re going to travel, then just travel. There are sights to see, spontaneous adventures to be a part of, and all kinds of unexpected things that happen. Aren’t you traveling to take advantage of those?

But when you’re going to work, just work. I think Tim Ferris really hit it with the concept of mini-retirements: the idea of focusing 100% on one thing at a time is the only way to make significant progress. Work for 1-3 months, then take a mini-retirement for 1-3 months (depending on what you’ve got set up for yourself. More on this later).

#19) When everything gets irritating, it might be time to head home.

Then I remember: this isn’t home. People don’t speak English. Don’t expect anything to operate on your schedule. It’s not your country anyway, jackass.

This is usually the first sign of burnout, and usually means it’s time to find a cheap place to relax or time to book a flight home.

If you start really missing hot showers, strong coffee, Mexican food, or climate control, it might just be time, but….

#20) Long-term traveling can teach you more than almost anything else

About yourself, about life, about what you need to be happy. It also really highlights just how different home is from everywhere else, especially when you start to get a large sample size to compare it to.

For some, this can mean going home with a heightened perspective. For others, it may mean never going home. For everyone though, long-term travel will change your life.

Ditch everything and leave

Dare to embark on the adventure

There are many reasons to go on a long trip, and something tells me that if you read these lines it’s because the idea doesn’t scare you off…;)

In fact, for having exchanged a lot with friends, I would say that I see 2 categories of people who don’t do it:

Sometimes you just have to get started

It is generally much easier to find reasons not to go travel around the world or to postpone the departure date than to really make the decision to leave. We think about work, the apartment, the friends, and believe that now may not be the right time and that one day, the perfect time will come.

Believe me, the right time won’t come by accident, you have to force fate a little bit!

And once the decision is made, the machine will be launched! You will see that the most difficult part is to stop believing that your trip is just a wild dram, instead make it a FIXED PLAN.

In 6 months, in 1 year, in 10 years, it doesn’t matter, but don’t give up on the goal you have set for yourself!

I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть фото I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть картинку I travelled around the world 205. Картинка про I travelled around the world 205. Фото I travelled around the world 205dare to leave! I promise you won’t regret it!

Why are we going on a world tour exactly?

I can name hundreds of reasons, but once again if you have arrived on our blog in search of information to go around the world, then you must not be a difficult person to convince… For us, travel is a wonderful thing and it is one of the best schools of life for us!

What traveling inspires us:

Instead of quoting 57 other reasons to go on a round the world trip, I recommend you to read the experience of other backpackers that took the plunge and went on such an amazing adventure..
If you are still hesitating, you can also watch this video where we share 10 years of travel in 10 minutes:

And if we still haven’t been able to convince you, why don’t you watch our friends les coflocs‘s documentary “Génération Tour du Monde”? We guarantee you that after watching it you will only want to do one thing: Pack your things and go on a round the world trip 😉 (subtitles available in english)

And if for some reason you’re not 100% convinced yet, watch this video from Fabien Carré, a reader of the blog (who is also a talented video maker) who went on a round the world trip with his girlfriend between 2017 and 2018… a pure pleasure for the eyes!

Stop making excuses for yourself

For those of us who would like to travel but don’t, it’s because we often find reasons not to do so or to postpone it. Certainly there are constraints of daily life that are specific to everyone, but in my opinion it is really important to ask the right questions and especially to relativize and have the right state of mind…

So if you are healthy and the dream of discovering the world has been haunting you for some time, read the following and try to lay on paper all the reasons that would prevent you from leaving… and try to find some solutions. One problem at the time…

For each problem its own solution. Sometimes, changing one’s state of mind is already enough to start seeing a potential solution!

Work: Quitting or sabbatical leave?

Job related questions are often a crucial point that pushes many people to postpone a long-term travel project. The fear of losing a year’s experience on the resume, not knowing if we will find a job we like when we return, the fear of asking our boss for a sabbatical leave… etc.

To be honest, this is a question we asked ourselves a lot. With Ben, we had finished our studies and we were both in our “first real job”, at the beginning of our “career” if you can call it that. But honestly, we were also both convinced that this trip would bring us a real plus in our lives.

A round the world trip is not necessarily a hole in your Resume

A round the world trip can not be added to your resume as a professional experience, but it is undoubtedly something that has a value that goes far beyond. During a long trip you have LOTS of free time! It’s up to you to make the most out of it! Learn new skills during your trip as we did with this blog for example… You can learn languages (we did 2 months of Spanish courses in Quito in the middle of our world tour for example), train yourself on something you like along the way. The possibilities are endless and you will have all the time in the world to get started 😉

I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть фото I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть картинку I travelled around the world 205. Картинка про I travelled around the world 205. Фото I travelled around the world 205while learning spanish during our trip

For us, the question of sabbatical leave did not arise because we had not been employed for long enough in our companies, but we are not actually any more unfortunate. Resignation has the significant advantage of leaving doors open : whether to extend your trip or to find a new professional path when you return… who knows!

And I remember that we thought that at worst, we would find work in a store or restaurant (or other) anyway until we could find something better. It is not a tragedy to do a more “bread and butter” job after such an adventure if you have a little trouble finding your “dream” job.

The apartment or house

When you go on a long trip, the housing question can be a delicate one.

For us the situation was pretty easy. We were renting an apartment in Vienna, Austria. Not knowing if we wanted to return to Austria or Switzerland after our trip, we decided to terminate the lease. We sold our few pieces of furniture. Without too much effort, we managed to pack our entire life in a couple boxes that we stored in our parents’ basement.

Of course, our situation may not be the norm, but be aware that there are many alternatives.

If you are a homeowner you can rent your house or apartment in your absence: this will allow you to cover the running costs during your absence and also ensure you a small income for the duration of the trip.
You can rent your apartment/house furnished or if you prefer not to leave your furniture to strangers you can consider storing your belongings in a storage facility for the duration of your trip.

Family and Friends

So this is a fake excuse, the real friends will still be there when you get back!

Then there are situations that can be a little more difficult to manage when you are on the other side of the world (death of a loved one, a friend going through dark times, etc…). But it’s part of life unfortunately. And does the possibility of this happening justify not going around the world? I don’t think so… And then, you’ll also make a lot of new friends on the road;)

Children

For this point we are probably not in the best position to talk about it, because we don’t have children. It is obvious that the organization is a little different when you decide to take the road with little ones, but it is by far not impossible; many have done it before you, and for children it is necessarily a unique experience that they will keep with them all their lives!

Probably the most delicate point for me when I started planning our trip around the world. I had had a little furry friend in my life for over 7 years (and by furry friend I do not mean Ben ). It’s name was Pepsi. 🙂 A little black pug, who snored more than a drunk guy, could eat continuously and loved to lounge on the couch with his mummy… I don’t hide it from you, the tears were flowing the day I had to leave her, but what reassured me was that we found a GOLDEN family to take care of her while we were away.

Unfortunately I didn’t get to see her again because in our absence she developed a very severe stomach cancer which forced us to let her go within hours. This was a really hard thing to handle for me while on the roads… When I got the phone call, we only had a couple hours to decide what to do. She was suffering a lot, and it would have been ridiculously selfish to make her wait a couple days until I could have been with her to say goodbye. But I also know that she was very well cared for, the loving family she was with took care of her until the last moment.

I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть фото I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть картинку I travelled around the world 205. Картинка про I travelled around the world 205. Фото I travelled around the world 205My little princess and me trying to have the same look on my face…

My advice: Take the time to plan the stay of your pet in time. Look for the best home, ideally with your family or close friends, or better said: with people you trust. When you leave, prepare yourself for the possibility that something may happen in your absence… This is the worst case scenario, but as it has been the case for me. Choose the people who take care of them wisely, making sure they are able to take responsibility for an animal.

Money

I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть фото I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть картинку I travelled around the world 205. Картинка про I travelled around the world 205. Фото I travelled around the world 205As is so often the case, money is a bit in the center of most concerns. The most important thing when planning a long-term trip is to budget well in advance and consider all potential spending points to avoid unpleasant surprises along the way. Once you have determined the amount you need, you can start developing a plan to save….

We also devote a full chapter to the round-the-world budget a little later in this guide (don’t worry, we’ll tell you everything you need to know ;)).

But know it, a trip around the world will cost you much less than a “regular” year of living in your home country, the only difference is that you may have to manage without income… Even though… There are many professions that allow you to work remotely, so think about it! (But we will come back to this later in this guide!)

Maybe instead of leaving for a year without income, you could decide to leave for a longer period of time by working part-time online? Or maybe you’d rather make your trip slightly shorter and enjoy every single minute of it? The answer to this question is 100% up to you!

Going alone or with several people?

When planning your trip, one of the big questions is whether you prefer to go alone or accompanied. For us the question didn’t really come up because we both dreamed of going on this trip, so the day we realized that it was feasible on the budget side, we didn’t really look any further;)…

But all personalities are different!

For example, I know that Ben would most probably have gone around the world alone if we hadn’t met, while I would have tended to go with a friend (at least for part of the trip).

The significant advantage of going alone is that you are 100% free, you are not accountable to anyone, and you do exactly what you want when you want!

And let’s face it, travelling alone does not mean being alone on the roads!

If you are open to meeting new people then you may not be alone very often ;). You will meet many travellers on your way with whom you may want to go a long way!

But for me there are also disadvantages to leaving alone (you’re probably gonna tell me it’s better this way since we decided to leave as a couple).

Travelling alone also means not having a shoulder to rest on when you have a bad day, that person who will hold your hand when you are in bed on the other side of the world with a damn virus, or just someone with whom you can share all those incredible moments you’ve experienced! And furthermore, sharing these memories just doesn’t have a price once we get back to “normal life”…

Travelling together, it is not always easy either. You must carefully choose the person with whom you decide to embark on the adventure!

Whether as a couple or with friends, you have to be sure that you will be able to tolerate each other for 1 year, 24/7 (or almost)… I have to admit, if I think about my best friends, there are not many with whom I would see myself going on a trip like this one!

With Ben I wasn’t worried, we’re a good team, we support each other, we laugh a lot and we’re both people who make compromises quite easily… 18 months on the roads together, and everything went perfectly well for us. But after 12 years spent side by side I think we’re starting to get to know each other’s little flaws and we’ve learned to “manage the beast”! 😉

Travel the world and Travel around the world

Is there any difference between the two phrases?

1 Answer 1

«Travel around the world» is often used in a fairly literal sense of proceeding more-or-less entirely in a single direction in order to proceed around the globe in a giant circle.

«Travel the world» is used to speak going to a relatively large number of varied international destinations. Someone who has made seven trips to Paris would not be considered to have «travelled the world», but someone who has made one trip each to Paris, Rome, Moscow, Perth, Cairo, Singapore, and Mumbai would have a much better claim to it.

Challenges of Travelling the World The way people travel the world has become more complex. There are many rules and regulations to remember. Even the smallest thing can set the travel plans into a stressful situation. Travellers should take into consideration the numerous challenges that they might come across during their trip. Especially, if they aim to travel solo. The idea of travelling around the World is incredible, but without serious planning for the trip the travellers could find themselves in a difficult situation thousands of miles from home.

There are a number of things to consider. The number one difficulty to world travel for the majority of people is the language barrier. Hundreds of different languages and dialects are spoken all over the world. If you are lucky you might speak two or three languages, but during your world travels it is likely that you will encounter languages that you do not speak. Having a plan to cope with this difficulty will be necessary. A conversion dictionary for the language in question might be useful.

Another problem that world travellers have to deal with is currency. Every country you go to will most likely require the traveller to convert their currency. Several European countries have adapted to using a common currency called the Euro which helps to make travel in between these countries much easier now but for Sweden, Denmark, the UK and some others.

Every country has laws that dictate what requirements a tourist must meet in order to enter into the country. Some countries may only require a traveller to have a valid passport. Russians, for example, can travel to such countries where English is spoken as the Maldives, the Bahamas, the Seychelles, Grenada, Dominica, Israel and some others. Other countries, for example, the UK, Canada, Australia, the USA, Malta and others require a tourist visa for travellers. Research the requirements for each country you are planning to visit. Remember to update your passport and any other documentation needed. It is a good idea to take photocopies of your passport and other important documents to take with you. If you lose the originals, you can go to the nearest embassy to get a new one.

Pack for your trip at least a couple of days in advance. Even before you pack, you should create a list of items you want to bring with you. When you pack, have that list with you. It will make the packing faster and easier. It is also useful to take only necessary things and fewer bags along with you. Folding your clothes with a more efficient technique can help you.

Knowing the laws of each country that you will visit during your trip can prove to be extremely difficult. A great source of information that connects to the most relevant things a tourist should know about each country is a world travel guide either online or offline. This type of guide will let you know which side of the road you need to drive on and things of that nature. A downloaded guide works offline without an internet connection. Keeping it with you during the course of your travels may prove to be an invaluable help. You only have to pick a country or major city to download its guide. You can also use Snapchat and VK if you want to know about the world’s most exciting places and cultures, read the insider’s guides and features, full of ideas, local tips and travel experiences.

During your travels it is important to pay attention to what you eat. Staying healthy while you are travelling abroad is vitally important. Before you leave for your trip call your health insurance company and see what type of coverage your plan provides for travel abroad.

I think that travelling round the world is a part of education. It is more realistic and practical than solving calculus problems. Travelling is certainly a beautiful hobby. It teaches you many things about living your life wisely. You meet different people. You learn lessons.

It is important to do the packing in two days before the trip.
1) True
2) False
3) Not stated

Решение:

Travelling I’ve spent the last year wandering around the globe and exploring this wondrous thing called life. Through 26 flights, I’ve managed to circle the globe twice, and touch 5 of the 7 continents. It’s been an incredible experience. The journey led me from scuba diving for a month in Thailand to hitchhiking in African country. I’ve learned about the world and myself more than any book, teacher or person could tell me.

I’ve learned that the timing will never be perfect because rarely are we blessed with the perfect time to do something. When I was planning on leaving to travel for a year, it was never the “right time” when everything was going to be put on hold for my travels. I needed more money, or I would lose my job. I realized that I was never going to be “ready” to drastically change my life, as I was always going to have some new commitment or excuse. So I left at the “wrong time” in life and it turned out to be the best thing that happened to me. But once I got sick of missing out on things I wanted to do and see, I started to just do them anyway.

I’ve also learned that friendships are everything. I heard this one a lot before, but never really believed it that much. When I started looking back on my travels, I started to think “Wow, I’ve seen a heck of lot of cool places”. I tried to think back to my favorites, which ones did I enjoy the most? They were always the ones where I had the best friends and really had nothing to do with where I was. The people around you contribute a great deal to your overall happiness. It was only when I had no friends that I realized their importance.

When travelling, you have complete freedom to literally do anything you want. You can relax everyday on the beach, you can be alone every day in your room, you can eat ice cream for breakfast every day, and you can drink all the time. This freedom can be quite liberating, but many people have a tough time balancing the party/drinking/vacation aspect with truly seeing and experiencing each country, because you have no responsibilities and no one around to tell you when you can’t do something. I too fell into a similar kind of trap. I indulged in so many aspects of life. I took everything to the extreme until it had lost its excitement. I realized that balance was the key.

Another lesson I have learned is that life doesn’t have to be “normal”. Go to school, get a job, or buy a big house. When anyone strays from this path they are considered to be not “normal”. It’s only when I started traveling that I saw that a fulfilling and happy life isn’t always a respectable job, with a big house and lots of money. I began to meet interesting characters from all over the world and saw first-hand how they had gone “against the grain” and succeeded. There are tons of other ways to live a fulfilling and happy life, but most of us have only seen the “big house” scenario. I saw and experienced how happy people are doing something completely different than normal jobs, because they get to wake up every day and do what they want to do in the place they want to be.

So, while travelling I realized that you can read about things, watch them on TV, or hear stories from a friend, but nothing comes close to first-hand human experience. You get a whole new perspective on what really matters and you feel this sense of adventure and excitement that reminds you just how many possibilities you have in life. To anyone who has not travelled, do it. And to those who have, continue to do so. It will teach you more about yourself and the world around you than you could ever imagine.

The author is sure that ‘normal’ life is
1) impossible.
2) too dull.
3) not necessary.
4) very rare.

Решение:
The author is sure that ‘normal’ life is not necessary.
Автор уверен, что «нормальная» жизнь не нужна.

Around the World in Eighty Days (French: Le tour du monde en quatre-vingt jours) is a novel by Jules Verne, described contemporaneously as taking place in the last quarter of 1872, as the historical British Empire on which «the sun never sets» was nearing its peak. The story describes Phileas Fogg of London and his French valet Jean Passepartout circumnavigating the world in 80 days in an effort to win a £20,000 wager—a small fortune in that era. The itinerary can, with some difficulty and deviations, be re-created today.

Unlike much of Verne’s work, Around the World in Eighty Days is not a work of science fiction. Widespread deployment of steam power on land and sea was slashing travel times on an unprecedented scale in the mid to late 1800s; an intercity journey by stagecoach that used to take a week was often completed same-day by rail. Advances such as the ceremonial last spike in a first transcontinental railroad in the United States of America (May 10, 1869), construction of the Suez Canal in Egypt (1869) and linking of Indian railways across the sub-continent (1870) were ushering in an era where—at least for a wealthy few—passengers on common carriers would be able to readily purchase around-the-world journeys which formerly were multi-year adventures attempted on sailing ships by a hardy, pioneering minority. The journey, as described in the story, was technically possible with the new technology of its era.

In a certain sense, the story was also a showcase of the vastness of the British Empire at that time, as the majority of places visited by Fogg were British colonies. Such places include Egypt, Yemen, India, Singapore, Hong Kong and Ireland, with Shanghai also home to a British concession at that time.

Publication and adaptations [ edit ]

Around the World in Eighty Days was first published as a serial from October to December 1872, causing some readers to believe that the journey took place in real life. The book was published in 1873. The complete text of the novel is on Wikisource in the original French and in an English translation. The book is available for free from Project Gutenberg with a free companion audio book.

The story was so popular with the public that it has spawned many film and TV adaptations. The 1956 film version starring David Niven and Cantinflas won 5 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. It was a star-studded cast featuring cameos by Frank Sinatra, Marlene Dietrich and others. At a time when round-the-world travel was becoming far more accessible due to commercial flights, it sparked massive interest in travel and tourism.

Some of the adaptations have set up Fogg and Passepartout travelling a leg of the journey in a hot air balloon. While balloons were well known in 1872, and Jules Verne described them in other books, the original novel lets Fogg dismiss balloons as useless for travel.

Real life [ edit ]

Since the novel was published, people have been trying to recreate the main characters’ adventurous journey. Elizabeth Jane Cochrane («Nellie Bly» of the Joseph Pulitzer tabloid New York World) completed an 1889 round the world overland trip in seventy-two days; Elizabeth Bisland (of Cosmopolitan magazine) completed a simultaneous, rival trip in the opposite direction in 76½ days. Michael Palin, famous from Monty Python, completed the journey in 1988 for a BBC TV series, and an accompanying book. Countless others have followed in their footsteps; the starting point and exact list of cities visited varies between travellers.

While trans-oceanic and trans-continental overland journeys have diminished with the growth of air travel, travel round the world overland remains possible. One may see much which would be missed if flying over countries instead of visiting them.

Prepare [ edit ]

I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть фото I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть картинку I travelled around the world 205. Картинка про I travelled around the world 205. Фото I travelled around the world 205

Travellers retracing the original 1870s voyage proposal in the modern era will find that much has changed; overland travel times have been slashed by more than half as diesel and electrified rail has replaced twenty mile-per-hour steam trains, while the number of ocean-going passenger vessels has greatly diminished as air travel has taken much of the trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific passenger volume. While one Cunard passenger liner still plies the seas, most passenger ship travel is by cruise ships designed as entertainment rather than as the backbone of an efficient transport system. Departures are less frequent and the entire round-the-world overland journey may need to be structured to accommodate which sea crossings are available on which days; many only run seasonally or infrequently. On some crossings, freighter travel might be an option if there is no passenger ship, but the number of spaces on these vessels is limited; a private ocean-going vessel (such as a yacht) may also be an option.

The «world cruise» offered (usually as a once-a-year tour) by cruise ship lines cannot be completed in eighty days as it’s designed for sightseeing; it takes a hopelessly indirect route, calls in every port, and stops for a day or two to allow the traveller to tour each city. Certainly no replacement for the historic ocean liner, which was built for speed. By the time the passenger returns home, 120 days or so would have passed and any bets or wagers on the rapidity of this seemingly-mighty vessel would have been lost more than a month ago. Phileas Fogg would not be impressed.

Passport and visa restrictions are not to be neglected, especially as overland travel requires entering a long list of multiple nations instead of merely flying over them. The days of passports claiming «An Australian (or Canadian, or whichever realm) citizen is a British subject» and that claim being largely respected throughout a vast Britannic Empire are long gone; every country applies its own arbitrary restrictions to the global traveller. A few points under British control in the depicted era are no longer part of the empire or Commonwealth; the Suez Canal is now controlled by Egypt, the political situation in much of the Middle East and Central Asia leaves much to be desired, and Hong Kong is now under the control of China. In addition to that, visa procedures often differ by port of entry and those for overland or ship entry tend to be harder than those for entry via air.

While fitting a global circumnavigation into an eighty-day schedule is trivial with round the world flights, fitting an entirely-overland journey into this time frame is a challenge; while aviation has greatly reduced travel times, it has also all but ended the tradition of the great liners which once competed for the fastest ocean crossing times by sea. There is still regular transatlantic service (which will cost you), but trans-Pacific services are virtually non-existent and require probably the biggest amount of advance planning.

Select your sea crossings first; scheduling of overland portions needed to reach the docks should then fall into place. Once you have an itinerary and budget, start looking for individual-country visas.

Phileas Fogg and Passepartout started out in London.

London – Paris – Turin – Brindisi by rail and boat [ edit ]

This remains possible; in the modern era one may take Eurostar from St. Pancras in London to Paris, then trains through Munich and Bologna to Brindisi in southeastern Italy, 29 hours total.

While various proposals for a Channel Tunnel had been made as early as 1802, no one had attempted to build one; an 1881–82 attempt was abandoned after the first mile. Fogg would therefore almost certainly have crossed the English Channel by boat. A more authentic way to replicate this route would thus be to take a train from London to Dover, cross the English channel to Calais by ferry, then catch a train onwards to Paris from Calais. From Paris, take the Milan-bound TGV and get off at Turin. You can board a Frecciarossa high-speed train in Turin that takes you to Brindisi.

Brindisi – Suez – Aden – Bombay by steamer [ edit ]

Fogg takes the Mongolia, which arrives at 29.967 32.533 5 Suez in 4 days, stopping in 12.7833 45.0166 6 Aden to take on coal, reaching 19.0318 72.8487 7 Bombay 6 days later. In Suez, a Scotland Yard detective named Fix — who has been sent out from London in pursuit of a bank robber — notes that Fogg fits the description, so he follows them on the rest of the journey.

This may be difficult to replicate as written, as Somali piracy disrupted sea traffic entering the Gulf of Aden from 2000 to 2017. Sailing on a freight ship or on a cruise may be possible. Otherwise it’s going to be hard, time-consuming, expensive, bureaucratic and dangerous if you want to duplicate this leg as closely as possible. Additionally, because of Yemen’s on-going civil war, stopping off in Aden is very dangerous and strongly discouraged (as of November 2021). Cruise lines no longer ply the route from Europe to Alexandria, so you will have to go either via Malta to Tunisia or via Greece or Cyprus to Israel (though it’s a bad idea to get an Israeli stamp in your passport, unless you have more than one) and then travel overland to Egypt. Continue overland down the Red Sea coast at least to Eritrea from where you can get a ferry across the Red Sea to Jeddah—though for this route you would have to convince the Saudi authorities to give you a visa. Another alternative, then, would be travelling down to Djibouti and cross over to Yemen, one of the world’s most dangerous countries. Either way, you’ll then continue overland to the United Arab Emirates from where it might be possible to travel by dhow (traditional boat) to India.

A modified version of this would be doing the trip mostly overland. Brindisi has good ferry connections to different ports in Greece, from where you can get by train or bus to Istanbul. Actually, you can skip the Brindisi part altogether and go from Paris via Munich, Budapest and Bucharest directly to Istanbul, approximately following one of the routes of the former Orient Express. Once in Istanbul, you have some options for getting overland to Delhi. Apparently you can pull this off in 15 days. From Delhi, then, take the train to Mumbai.

Bombay through Allahabad to Calcutta by rail [ edit ]

The 2000 km from Mumbai to Kolkata is now 27–38 hours by train, or 33 hours by road. Today’s travellers don’t have to purchase and ride elephants.

Calcutta through Singapore to Hong Kong by steamer [ edit ]

Going via Singapore is not the shortest path since China borders India. This border is disputed, the border area is very mountainous, and road infrastructure is quite limited. The border crossing between China and India is only open to traders, and not to tourists. The route therefore must make a lengthy detour via a third country, or go by air or sea. Freight ships do frequently ply the route taken by Fogg, but there’s likely no passenger ship as direct flights to Hong Kong take about four hours.

Land travel is problematic eastwards from India; some areas of easternmost India require special permits on the top of your visa and Myanmar regulates their land borders fairly strictly in all directions. Going north, you will hardly have any problems getting into Nepal, though crossing into Tibet will require some bureaucracy.

One alternative would be flying to Singapore and travelling from there by land to Hong Kong through Southeast Asia. You can get by train from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur and further to Butterworth and Bangkok. From there, consider the options in the itineraries Bangkok to Ho Chi Minh City overland and Ho Chi Minh City to Shanghai overland. Budget a week or so for this alternative. Alternatively, Star Cruises occasionally operates long-haul cruises from Singapore to Hong Kong, typically taking about 10 days.

Another possibility would be to fly from India into China and continue by train to Hong Kong or Shanghai. Perhaps the most interesting route would be to fly from Delhi to Lhasa and continue on routes given in Overland to Tibet, but that risks altitude sickness since Lhasa is at 3,650 m (12,000 ft), and the Chinese government has complex and varying regulations for travel permits for Tibet. A shorter and easier route that avoids both problems would be to fly Kolkata–Kunming (called going «over the hump» during World War II; see Burma Road), then continue on routes described in Hong Kong to Kunming overland.

Hong Kong – Shanghai – Yokohama by steamer [ edit ]

Modern cruise ships connect Hong Kong’s busy seaport to many destinations, including Tokyo and Okinawa. A trip to Tokyo takes 12 days with multiple stops in China and South Korea; Okinawa can be reached in five days with fewer intermediate stops.

You can also take a train from Hong Kong to Shanghai. High speed trains depart daily from Hong Kong and take 8 hours to reach Shanghai. A cheaper option is to take the slower sleeper train that departs every 2 days from Hong Kong and arrives in Shanghai in 20 hours.

Again, if you’re a bit flexible with the itinerary, it’s possible to travel with regular ferries. Continue north from Hong Kong to e.g. Shanghai, Suzhou or Qingdao. From there, there are ferries to Japan running every few days.

Yokohama to San Francisco by steamer [ edit ]

I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть фото I travelled around the world 205. Смотреть картинку I travelled around the world 205. Картинка про I travelled around the world 205. Фото I travelled around the world 205

Crossing the Pacific is probably the hardest problem to solve for anyone who’d like to travel around the world without flying. Modern cruises run from both Tokyo and Yokohama; one Princess cruise takes a huge circle from Japan north to Alaska then down through Vancouver, San Francisco and Hawaii, arriving in Australia 45 days later. Modern day cruises usually take about 20 days to complete the journey from Tokyo or Yokohama to San Francisco, almost always stopping in Alaska and Canada on the way. Freighter travel is probably your best bet here.

San Francisco – Salt Lake City – Medicine Bow – Fort Kearney – Omaha – Chicago – New York City by rail [ edit ]

The Jules Verne itinerary (written in 1872) makes its North American transcontinental journey entirely through the United States by rail; a railway across Canada would not exist until 1885 and a system of United States Numbered Highways (which included the once-famous Route 66) would not exist until 1926.

Covering this route by rail exactly as Phileas Fogg did is difficult if not impossible today. Due to the growing popularity of private car ownership and air travel in the 20th century, rail travel declined; many US rail lines have been dismantled or now only carry heavy freight. In particular, the main transcontinental line no longer passes through Wyoming (which has been left without passenger railroads altogether), instead having been routed further south through Denver, Colorado. This means that you will have to hitchhike on a freight train for the leg between Salt Lake City and Omaha if you want to replicate the route taken by Fogg. Similarly, the train between Chicago and New York City has since been re-routed further north via South Bend, Toledo, Cleveland and Albany, and no longer follows the route taken by Fogg through Fort Wayne, Mansfield, Alliance, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Newark and Jersey City.

As the Oakland Bay Bridge had yet to be built, Fogg’s carriage may have headed down south to San Jose, and later headed back up north towards Oakland, where he would have caught the train. Alternatively, Fogg may have boarded a ferry across the bay from San Francisco to Oakland. However, Oakland railway station is no longer served by transcontinental trains with those now serving Emeryville instead.

Although the experience would be far less authentic, an attempt to retrace the journey by car could allow a closer approximation to the exact route taken by Phileas Fogg in the novel. Nonetheless, the speed of rail travel has increased substantially since the 1870s, despite the priority of freight and the comparatively low general speed limit of 79 mph (127 km/h) in the US.

The modern Amtrak «California Zephyr» Emeryville–Chicago and «Lake Shore Limited» Chicago–NYC take about three and a half days.

New York City – Queenstown – Dublin – Liverpool – London by steamer and rail [ edit ]

Today, Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 ocean liner runs NYC–Southampton in seven days, with trains onward running twice-hourly to London. This operation is seasonal and the number of departures are limited. There are also occasional sailings to Liverpool for special anniversaries. For those who want to replicate Fogg’s journey more faithfully, Cunard’s Queen Victoria occasionally makes a stop in Cobh (the modern name of Queenstown) on the way to Southampton, where you can get off and catch a train to Dublin (with a train change in Cork). You can then catch one of the ferries from Dublin to Liverpool, from which you have multiple options for catching a train onward to London.

Round the world trip (RTW) – The ultimate guide (2019 Edition)

Round The World Guide

Going on a round-the-world trip is for many people a dream come true.

A few years back, I went to travel around the world during 18 months without any programmed destinations. I had no pre-arranged itinerary.

Through my personal experience, I will share with you practical information about all you need to know to go on a Round The World Trip (RTW).

Round-the-World back in history

The desire to explore, to go further, to get to know new lands is almost as old as humankind. In the beginning, one had to survive, to make sure there was enough food, and ensure the safety of each individual as well the group. But as soon as it became possible, human beings went out to conquer the world.

In those days, the curiosity of discovering new land had a more practical reason: to establish commercial routes and strategic alliances with powerful faraway kingdoms.

That’s how Marco Polo left his home city of Venice only to return 24 years later, leaving behind the trail of a journey of over 22,000 km through Asia. But before him, in the 14th century, Ibn Battuta had covered an impressive 120,000 km of land that now corresponds to 44 countries.

Since the beginning of the 15th century, Portuguese sailors braved the unchartered oceans looking to establish a lucrative sea route to India. With that goal in mind, they ended up discovering islands lost in the immense Atlantic Ocean and established commercial posts in all the sub-Saharan African coast. After India, the South of the Atlantic and Brazil in South America followed. The Empire grew and strengthened.

But those were different times. At a time when brave sailors left behind the safety of Lisbon, venturing through the merciless waters of the Atlantic, believing they were traveling towards the end of the world. In those days people firmly believed the Earth was flat and finite, ending somewhere abruptly. For every day they spent at sea, they hoped to reach the end of the Earth and to be swallowed by the unknown.

For everyday man, the thought of a spherical planet was completely odd. But some, like Christopher Columbus, knew about the old Greek theories that talked about a sphere-shaped Earth.

And that’s how Columbus possibly became the first candidate to a round-the-world trip. The project he presented to the Spanish king was based on that idea: to reach India from Europe, in the opposite direction, circling the globe and reaching India from the other side.

Fate didn’t allow for Columbus to conclude his expedition and he only reached America thinking he had reached the so-called Eastern Indias.

The Expedition of Ferdinand Magellan

However, that original idea was not completed dismissed. Spain sponsored at least two more expeditions that tried to reach further, unsuccessfully. Not too long after, an experienced Portuguese sailor called Ferdinand Magellan (Fernão de Magalhães) was hired by the Spanish king to complete Columbus’ dream.

Ferdinand Magellan’s fleet departed Seville in 1519 and, managing to dodge the Portuguese Navy’s surveillance, sailed South, restocking in the Canary Islands. After one more stop, in Cape Verde this time, they sailed towards the Brazilian shore without reaching too close, to avoid the threatening Portuguese established there.

After restocking once more, Ferdinand Magellan went South looking for the passage that he believed opened the way to India. In October of 1520, his ships went around the most southern cape in South America, starting to sail Northeast towards Asia.

After passing by the Mariana and Guam islands, they reached the Philippines where Ferdinand Magellan would die after fighting with local tribes.

The man died but the project lived on. Severely reduced by disease and fights, the crew couldn’t maintain the three remaining ships. They set the Concepción on fire and focused on keeping the Trinidad and the Victoria.

Later, the Trinidad began to leak. The Victoria wasn’t big enough to accommodate all men and they separated. The bigger ship tried to return following the same route that brought them there, but they were captured by the Portuguese and the ship sank during a storm.

Under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano, the Victoria tried to return to Spain sailing West. It reached on 6 September 1522 with 18 survivors aboard. The first round-the-world trip in history was complete.

How to plan a round-the-world trip

1. When to Go

Most travelers want to go somewhere when the weather is nice. Well, this is simple when you’re picking only one destination. Just look for information on the best time to visit, consider a few factors, and book your tickets.

Well, things get trickier when the world is your destination. Although most trips around the world happened in smaller latitudes, don’t think the weather stays the same as you travel further around the Earth.

In addition to the weather, that we hope to be dry and warm, there are other factors the traveler keeps in mind: price fluctuation, political events that might affect the stability of individual countries, and dates of festive events.

Prices may vary significantly and affect the global budget, especially if you’re planning a round-the-world trip as an independent traveler and with lots of overland traveling. In most places, the variation isn’t too big, but it’s best to prepare for increased prices in accommodation, restaurants, and long-distance transportation during the high tourism season and special events.

Moreover, account for the possibility of having a hard time finding accommodation if you reach a place at the time of important events. It’s better to research and plan and avoid any dates with a more significant number of visitors. Unless, of course, you’re particularly interested in that event.

2. Weather

Some scenarios are explicit: traveling in the Middle East or the North of Africa in the peak of summer is like moving through hell. The heat will be unbearable, and you’ll spend most of the days where there is air conditioning.

You don’t have to be a genius to know that going further up north during the winter will impact your trip, when there’s no sunlight but plenty of cold and snow storms.

But the world is full of climate phenomena, and it’s impossible to know them all. How to plan a round-the-world trip means a lot of research. Never stop searching for the right information. The quality of data you gather could mean the difference between a sweet memory or hell.

Let’s imagine that you want to include India in your route. You can’t wait to see Taj Mahal or explore the fascinating Varanasi. But do you know that the Monsoon starts in June and that a significant portion of the country turns into a sea of mud because of the non-stopping pouring rain? The same thing happens in Southeast Asia between May and September.

However, consider the possibility of being bold. Choosing the most adverse seasons could come with unexpected advantages. Tourist sites are almost empty, and prices drop. And some places become more beautiful. For example, few people choose to visit Angkor Wat in Cambodia during the rainy season. But that’s precisely the time of year when the plants around the temples look more beautiful. They’ll completely dry out during the dry season. Some phenomena only happen when it’s supposedly the worst time to travel, like the Northern Lights that are only visible during the coldest months in the places closer to the arctic circle.

NOTE: I personally like to travel during the Summer, since it is usually low season. Apart from zero tourists, prices tend to be cheaper.

4. Healthcare

Some trips around the world, especially those made by plane, won’t pose too many risks to traveler’s health, because they’ll be in controlled environments most of the time.

Other more “extreme” options could take you to areas where diseases like malaria, dengue or yellow fever are common, and you’ll have to take as many precautions as possible.

To know what’s the best strategy for such health threats, book a specific appointment for travelers at your local National Health System office, or directly with something similar to the National Travel Medicine Office.

If you want to research for yourself before scheduling an appointment, there’s no better website than the CDC – Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

5. Insurance

Some people will think it’s best to buy travel insurance that covers every possible incident and accident. Others will be fine with a simpler insurance policy with basic coverage that assures medical assistance in case of emergency and eventually traveling back to their home country. The bold adventurers will simply go travel without worrying about such things.

Always remember:

a. National Health Insurances

These are the insurances you can get from insurance companies based in our country. They’re more affordable, any insurance agent can handle them, and you get personalized assistance. On the other hand, the coverage they offer is not as detailed as the ones provided by specialized companies. If you want some protection but aren’t paranoid about insurances, this could be a good solution.

b. Specialized Health Insurances

There are several specialized insurance companies based abroad that work mostly online, and offer different kinds of travel insurance policies. Those are highly specialized companies, reputable and used by many people all over the world. They’ll be more expensive than the national health insurances, but they’re a lot more detailed and completely developed for travelers. World Nomads is the world leading company of travel insurance.

6. Passport and Visas

You will obviously need a passport and possibly some visas. Considering this is a big trip, please take note of your passport’s validity date. Keep in mind that many countries don’t let tourists in if their passport’s validity date isn’t more than six months after arrival.

When it comes to visas, you’ll have to deep dive into the conditions of each country where you’ll be traveling to. Especially if you’re planning your whole trip before leaving.

Here are some problems to anticipate and get ready for:

This might not seem like an issue, but visas have a validity date therefore if you’re traveling to one of these countries at the final leg of your trip, you better pay attention to the dates.

For the first approach to visa issues, research Wikipedia. Google search something like “Visa Policy of [name of the country you’re visiting].”

7. Quick Tips For A Trip Around The World

Make copies of your documents

Always carry copies of your documents such as passport, drivers license, international health card, personal ID, etc.

Do You Need a Visa?

Know which countries you’ll need a visa to visit so you can take care of that in advance.

Make sure your vaccines are up to date

There are some vaccines you need to make sure are up to date before traveling: yellow fever, cholera, diphtheria, Japanese encephalitis, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, flu, rabies, tetanus, and typhoid fever.

Make sure your passport is valid for several months

If you’re traveling for a year or more, it’s not a good idea to carry a passport that will expire in 5 months.

Make sure you have enough blank pages on your passports

If you’re traveling to many countries and your passport doesn’t have enough blank pages for stamps and visas, get a new passport.

Consider if you need travel insurance

We never think something wrong will happen to us, but travel insurance doesn’t cover only the horrible and drastic situations. There are other incidents covered by travel insurance: canceled flights, lost luggage, stolen gear, medical appointments, and other minor medical assistance, etc.

Always carry US dollars or Euros

Don’t take for granted that you’ll always be able to withdraw cash from an ATM. Some destinations don’t have ATMs, or the ones that exist are out of order or don’t have cash. It’s always a good idea to have a backup stash in US dollars and euros.

Carry a mini first aid kit

It’s always a good idea to carry a mini first aid kit with bandages, band-aids, some pills for diarrhea, betadine, etc. Don’t go overboard and pack a small kit with the essentials.

Forward your mail

Find someone who can check your mail regularly to see if you’ve received something important from the bank, from work, etc.

Notify your bank about using your credit cards abroad

It’s crucial that you let your bank know that you’re traveling. I’ve found myself abroad with all my cards blocked because my bank suspected someone was committing fraud with my credit card.

Buy a mini laptop

Traveling with a light backpack is very important. Some laptop brands are great to travel, they’re light, fast, and have good storage capacity.

Buy a good quality camera

When you’re on a unique trip, it’s important to keep a record of the best places and the best moments with a good camera. I, personally, like and prefer to travel with a compact camera.

Around the World by Airplane

Buy a round the world airplane ticket

This is a good solution for those who spend a little more money but save the time it would take you to plan your route. Using this method, the traveler will buy only one ticket for a round-the-world trip, using the partnerships between airlines to travel around the world.

Please note that it doesn’t matter how many airlines you’ll use: you’ll be the customer of the airline operating your first flight and that’s the one that will take care of you throughout the whole trip. I suggest you choose a reputable airline for that first flight, considering the quality of service, customer care, and general conditions.

There is some flexibility but with some limitations: it’s true you can change the dates of the pre-booked flights without paying additional fees, as long as there are available flights, but you can’t change the point of departure or the point of arrival of each pre-defined flights, at least for free.

At the moment, three airline associations are offering this type of Round the World ticket:

If you choose this option for your round the world ticket, consider some additional points:

How to buy a RTW Air Ticket

1. Star Alliance

With Star Alliance, your ticket fee is based on the length of the trip. In your destination map, there are over 1,300 airports, with flights to practically every country in the world.

As for baggage allowance, Economy and Economy Premium passengers can check-in one piece of 20 kg luggage, the Executive passengers can check in two bags up to 30 Kg, and First Class passengers can go as far as 40 Kg. Star Alliance is very clear about its conditions from the start: you can only cross over the Pacific and the Atlantic once; you must include 3 to 15 stops; you can add up to five overland routes, but the first trip between continents has to be made by plane.

Their simulator for buying a round-the-world trip ticket is efficient and user-friendly, but it’s not perfect. Design a route that departs from Lisbon, and stops in New York, San Francisco, Honolulu, Singapore, Goa, Dubai, Amman, and returns to Lisbon. The website shows an estimate of 3,734 Euros.

But when defining the dates and choosing flights, there were some issues. After selecting the details for most routes, it was clear that Star Alliance doesn’t have a member operating flights between Dubai and Amman. What’s the solution? Go to Europe, with two layovers, and return to Asia.

The problem should be easily solved by adding an overland route or choosing alternative airports. But that meant you had to go back a few steps in the simulator.

2. One World

One World calculates tariffs based on the plan the client chooses: One World Explorer, based on the number of continents visited or flown over, while Globe Explorer, like Start Alliance, focuses on the number of miles traveled. That means if you’re interested in going on a long trip, with over 39,000 miles, it could be better to use One World Explorer that doesn’t take into account the distance. Children until 11 years old get a 25% discount.

Currently, it flies to over 1,000 destinations in 150 countries and has 15 partner airlines.

Unfortunately, its simulator is not user-friendly. The choices of flights are limited and mean countless changes to the original travel plan. For example, the website shows you a connection Goa – Lisbon but it needs an initial flight to Qatar and a second flight to Boston from there, and only then you can board a flight to Lisbon. It’s a 34-hour flight for a trip that could be done in 7 hours.

The interface is so confusing that you’ll probably won’t make it to the end of the planning stages where you see the prices.

3. Sky Team

This alliance of 21 airlines covers 1,064 destinations in 168 countries. Baggage allowance is of one check-in bag up to 23 Kg for economy class or two bags up to 23 kg for executive class. Children up to 11 years old get a 25% discount.

The Sky Team simulator is not the best and looks Google translated, with parts of the website mixed in different languages or poorly translated parts. Fortunately, the rest of the process is seamless, and we get an estimate for a similar route on Star Alliance (without the layover in Amman): 3,578 Euros. However, once you lay down all the details, choose the dates and the flights, the final price for our round the world trip with Sky Team is 4,315 Eur.

Why is the estimate different from the final price?

When you insert your ideal travel plan into the simulator of one of these airline alliances, they calculate the total of miles between cities and frame it into one of their tariffs.

Let’s picture that our route is 38,000 miles long and that you’re using the Star Alliance simulator. This alliance has three tariff tiers: up to 29,000 miles, up to 34,000 miles, and more than 39,000 miles. The website will estimate that your trip fits the middle tier.

But here’s a question: what if some of the courses you choose isn’t operated by one of the member airlines of the Star Alliance? To work around this, you’ll have to take one or more layovers and add miles. Therefore, you’ll move up to the next tier, and you can’t see that until you choose the dates and the flights.

4. Multi-Stop Ticket Agencies

In addition to the alliances, that gather many airlines, there are online companies that group tickets, in a sequence, from point A to point B, and sell it as a package.

The most significant advantage of these agencies is that the routes won’t be limited to the ones operated by the airlines of an alliance. Any flight can be included in the package, and you can avoid unnecessary miles and connections, by choosing the fastest and most direct flights.

Other strengths of these agencies ?

The traveler can choose to travel around the world for more than a year. And you can plan your route in stages because you don’t have to buy all tickets at once. You can plan the first leg of your trip, let’s say the first four months, and initially purchase tickets for that period. Then, when on the road, you can assess how the trip is going and buy a second package of tickets. If you’re worried about budget, you can calculate and estimate how much the trip will cost in the beginning and then buy separate ticket packages as you go along.

That idea of splitting the trip in smaller chunks is essential because you can’t make changes to the dates of the flights through these agencies without paying a fee. Actually, a double charge, because you’ll have to pay to the airline and the agency.

Another plus side of this option is their quality of service and customer care. They not only sell you the tickets, but they’ll provide travel consultancy, with experts who are available to help customers plan their trips.

With multi-stop tickets, the traveler only pays for the trips he takes. That means you can opt to travel overland for a big portion of your trip. Explore the area, take a closer look at the world. Use public transportation. If you choose buses, trains, or boats, you’re not paying for the air miles of the same route.

Generally speaking, and because you avoid layovers and indirect flights, a round-the-world trip using this system can be cheaper than one with the alliance tickets.

5. Bootsnall

Indie Bootsnall has a smooth and user-friendly simulator that allows you to build customized round-the-world trips. One of the good things about the simulator is that you can choose flexible dates. When you turn on this option, the system will find you the best connections, without bothering the user with the task to select all the dates.

Let’s use the same test route we used before: Lisbon – New York – San Francisco – Honolulu – Singapore – Goa – Dubai – Lisbon. Compared with the alliances, the price is nicer at around 2,000 Eur. Almost half the cost of the other option.

6. AirTreks

AirTreks company uses the same simulation software as Bootsnall but with fewer options. On AirTreks you can only see an estimate of the cost, without dates, and it redirects the user to get in touch with the company so an expert can assist you with the final product.

7. Agencies with Pre-Defined Solutions

Aware of the demand for trips around the world with pre-defined packages, some agencies prepare standard routes that travelers can purchase for a fixed price. It’s the best solution if you want to check a round-the-world trip off your bucket list without spending too much time and energy planning it. Of course, there’s close to zero flexibility, but the prices can be very affordable.

STA Travel has ten available routes, although only seven of them are genuinely round the world trips. The most affordable ones are around 1,200 Eur, and they’re meant for those who want to feel like they’ve been around the world. There aren’t many stops, but it is, in fact, a trip around the world: London – Dubai – Auckland – Los Angeles – London.

Want something big, but that doesn’t cost a small fortune? Give this route a look: London – Toronto – Buenos Aires – [overland trip or flight paid by the customer] – Bogota – Fort Lauderdale – Los Angeles – [overland trip or flight paid by the customer] – Las Vegas – Vancouver – Tokyo – Manila-Hong Kong – Bangkok – Dubai – London for 2,000 Eur.

8. Promotional Packages

If you’d like to travel around the world, but your budget doesn’t have room to bring this dream to life, cheer up because there’s one more option.

From time to time that are unbelievable promotions, sometimes because someone made a mistake when typing the price and other times because there’s really a promotion. Once you find a deal, there’s no flinching. Book before they run out or before the airlines cancel the offer.

Of course, these situations aren’t strung on personal preferences. When you find them, take them or leave them, accept the routes and the dates in the blink of an eye. And that, unfortunately, isn’t for everyone.

Around the World without Flying

Some people say that taking flights is not actual travel. It’s cheating; it’s escaping all the adventures and difficulties that you won’t find when flying. It’s covering ground in a couple of hours when you could take weeks or months doing it overland. It’s no wonder that traveling around the world without flying is highly praised.

To many, a real trip around the world has to be made overland. All of it. Facing challenges as they come along. But of course, an adventure this great is not for everyone. You need to be physically fit and have a very particular personality. Besides, you’ll need more time and a bigger budget. But still, don’t assume that an everyday citizen can’t embark on such an adventure.

Crossing continents is no longer a problem. In the modern world, there are connections by train, or bus, or smaller public transportation. But apart from certain areas, like the Sahara desert, and regions under armed conflicts where it is too dangerous to travel, crossing continents is not a problem for experienced travelers.

The big Atlantic and Pacific Oceans are the main problems. In the good old days, at the time Jules Verne wrote “Around the World in 80 Days”, things were ironically simpler. The technology wasn’t much help for travelers, but steamships were. And that made all the difference.

Have you thought how to cross the oceans if not on a plane? By boat of course. But how? The truth is that in the past there were many routes and many ships crossing the seas, but as the airlines became more popular and affordable, those sea routes practically disappeared.

Let’s be real, who would rather board a ship to cross the Pacific for weeks when they can cover the same distance on a plane in just a few hours? Maybe if they’re afraid of flying but the modern world shows no mercy. There aren’t long-distance passenger ships anymore.

Of course, there are cruise ships, but those cater to tourist routes, not to just travel from point A to point B.

Is this a problem without a solution? No. Although it’s practically unknown to most people, you can cross the ocean aboard a cargo ship. It’s expensive, but it’s unique. And it’s one way to solve the problem.

Around the World by Train

All-Included Package

Great Rail Journeys, a British company specialized in long-distance train travel, announced in 2014 its most ambitious travel product: a round-the-world trip in 51 days.

The route spreads through 34,000 Km, departing and arriving in London. The first leg crosses the Atlantic Ocean, taking the traveler to New York. From then on, train enthusiasts have every reason to be excited.

After two days in the Big Apple, the North American coast-to-coast trip begins, allowing travelers to immerse themselves into the deep history of railways. This trip lasts for 20 days, with the first leg connecting New York to Washington DC.

Next is Chicago and Denver, and it’s in that last city that the most historic sections of the trip happen, putting the passenger in touch with some iconic trains of the American West:

The crossing of the USA is close to an end, but there are two more exciting moments before resting in San Francisco: the first one, is the Grand Canyon Railway route and the second one is the Coast Starlight train, that follows the winding west coastline to San Francisco.

You’ll then cross the Pacific Ocean on a long-haul flight to Shanghai, where the second leg of this adventure begins, traveling across Asia. From China you’ll go to Mongolia, visiting historical sites like the Terracotta Warriors and the city of Beijing.

The train trip continues towards Russia, stopping in Ulan, Baikal Lake, Irkutsk, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg (where the last dynasty of the Russian czars, the Romanov family, was executed after the 1917 Revolution), and Kazan. The Russian-Asian part of the trip ends in Moscow.

In this part of the tour, they include a flight to Venice, an unusual option for a train trip around the world. The final part of the journey starts in that Italian city, with a quick train trip across Europe towards London where you’ll finish the almost two-month-long adventure.

The main advantage of this Great Rail Journeys package is that it’s organized for you. All you have to do is pay and enjoy the ride. It’s a high-quality package, with activities and tours in the main cities you visit, and luxury accommodation in famous hotels.

But the price of almost 30,000 Euros for this trip is not for everyone, and the unnecessary use of alternative transportation may be a nuisance for the train enthusiasts. The departure time is another disadvantage. There are no options regarding this: there’s only one trip per year.

Plan it Yourself

For some, planning a trip is as exciting as the trip. Spreading out maps and notebooks, and gathering all the information until the pieces of the puzzle fit. There’s a website that will come in handy to plan all routes on the railroad.

Seat 61 it’s like the bible for train travel enthusiasts. It’s a personal project that’s been collecting information over the years, updated with the help of travelers who give the website founder new information.

Around the World by Boat

Traveling on Cargo Ships

It’s a promising experience. It’s not the same as spending some days aboard a luxury passenger ship, with a pool and all-included restaurants. There are no recreational activities or movie theaters. You’ll face weeks aboard a cargo ship. The harsh reality of sea life. You’ll be a passenger among workers. You’ll cross the ocean without getting on a plane.

Regardless if it’s an oil tanker, a container ship, or a bulk carrier, life on board is simple. You wake up, wait for another day to go by, eat, and sleep. At least as a passenger because for the crew there are work shifts and the regular tasks that keep the ship running.

Few people know that many of these ships have some cabins and beds for passengers. Not too many, because according to the rules, if you carry more than 12 passengers you have to have a doctor on board and most companies don’t want that.

So, feeling isolated from the world is one of the problems to face. You may even be the only passenger aboard. Of course, you can bond with the crew members but that might not happen, and they’ll be busy with their tasks anyway, while you only have to kill time for one more day.

Watching how a ship works could be interesting, but after a few days, it becomes routine. Passengers are usually allowed on the bridge, but it becomes boring after a while.

Bring books to entertain yourself, movies, work, anything that helps to fill in the long hours of doing nothing.

Meals are served at the officers’ mess hall. The passenger eats with the crew, that generally speaks English, so you won’t have to worry about food.

But there are other issues: you’ll probably won’t have access to the Internet when traveling — a terrible deprivation for most people. And then there’s the cost: this is not the shipping companies’ core business, including passengers is an exception, and you’ll pay the price for that. On average, account for 100 Eur a day for this kind of trip. It may not seem like a lot, considering it includes food and accommodation, but calculate at least ten days to cross the Atlantic. And the Pacific Ocean isn’t smaller.

Some practical tips: check with your insurance company if your travel insurance policy covers incidents on this kind of ship. If your boat has a few stops along the way, make sure you find out if you need a visa to go onshore and if it’s worth the hassle.

Getting a Ride on a Recreational Ship

This is another resource that most people don’t know about or assume you need lots of experience, which is not entirely true. Of course, knowing something about seamanship and sailing might help you getting selected, but as long as you’re willing to help out with the tasks aboard, there’s always a chance of being accepted as a guest passenger on a sailboat or a recreational ship crossing the oceans.

It’s simple. The captain needs crew members and crew members need to cross the Atlantic. Crew members can travel for free in exchange for work.

You will still need some money. You’ll need to cover expenses with food, which generally means 10 to 25 Eur a day. In some situations, food is included in the trip, especially in bigger ships.

You can find the ideal situation for you in two ways:

Keep in mind we’re talking about sailboats, so the wind plays a vital role in the whole operation. Departures from Europe to the Americas usually happen between September and February, most likely in October and November.

Most available opportunities are to cross the Atlantic. A lot of people crosses this ocean with obvious departure and arrival points. It’s more complicated when it comes to the Pacific Ocean. It’s six times bigger and full of islands. It will be tough to find a sailboat that will take you across this ocean. Account for stops in Polynesia and remember that the most obvious departure points are usually in Australia and New Zealand. As for the best times of the year, there’s a good stream of sailboats from Mexico to French Polynesia around March, with departures until July. On the opposite, the typhoon season, when no one wants to be at sea, starts in November.

Cruise Ships on Replacement Trips

The luxury cruise ships crossing the seas with more or less wealthy tourists are sometimes transferred from one area of operations to another one, mainly to keep up with some regions’ seasonality.

The cruise ship type of traveler expects ships in a circular route meaning they depart and arrive in the same port or, at least, in the same region. But when the ship is being transferred to a faraway zone, it’s not as easy to find customers. That is when things become interesting.

Let’s say there’s a ship that after doing cruises through the fjords in Norway will be transferred to the Caribbean. It’s an excellent opportunity to cross the Atlantic, with all the amenities and usually at a lower price than cargo ships.

Trip Around the World Exclusively by Ship

It’s possible to travel around the world exclusively by ship, but it’s meant for people with a particular taste and a lot of pocket money.

You can travel on a CMA CGM ship. It departs from the USA, and you can choose to travel around the world from west to east or the opposite direction. Going west, the trip lasts for 50 days, departing Seattle and stopping at the following ports: Vancouver (Canada), Yokohama (Japan), Shanghai, Ningbo, Hong Kong, and Yantian (all in China), Tanjung Pelepas (Malaysia). Then you go through the Suez Canal, sail across the Mediterranean, crossing the Atlantic, and reach New York. The trip costs 4,000 Eur, or 80 Eur a day.

The route is more or less the same in the opposite direction but has fewer stops. The duration and price are the same.

The traveling conditions are practically the same I described on the Traveling on Cargo Ships section.
