“A Matter of Life and Death”. Мда. Купил в прошлом году. Послушал один раз. Больше не захотелось. А ведь сам знаю, что Мэйден! Понравилась (причём очень) всего одна песня “For the Greater Good of God”. Единственная вещь, которую Харрис написал сам. Тем и понравилась, наверно. Но я не настолько большой фанатик, чтобы слушать нецепляющие диски много раз. Кто бы что ни говорил. Хоть режь меня. Хоть Боги написали. Однако рецензировать надо. А слушать бесконечное множество раз неохота. Ладно. Буду делиться впечатлениями по ходу прослушивания. Итак.

“These Colours Don’t Run”. Начало нормальное и многообещающее. Как и на половине альбома, первый автор Смит. Припев хороший. Тема тоже. И первая, и вторая (где Брюс напевает). Оканчивается. Блин, классная песня!

“Brighter than a Thousand Suns”. Начинается очень интересно. Мне понравилось ещё тогда. Затем явно утяжелённая гитара начинает рубать риффы. Не сказать, чтобы очень интересные. Начинается припев. как будто его и нет. Про соло также. Потом меняется ритм. Через пару минут начинает надоедать. Второе соло не спасает. Играет так, как будто что-то очень-очень. А на деле. Затем возвращаемся в начало. Припев заставляет вспомнить о себе. Хороший номер.

“The Pilgrim”. Второй хит? Моего братца очень зацепило. Не сказать, чтобы меня нет. Цепляет момент перед припевом. Сам припев. никак. Соляк, вроде, поинтересней предыдущих. Ну и тот самый момент. А когда Брюс опять начинает петь припев – хочется выключить.

“Out of the Shadows”. Как мне не понравилось сначала, так и сейчас не нравится. Да Брюс. Исписался ты, кажись. И Харрис не помог. А Харрис, он тут вообще везде присутствует. Наверное, всё происходит так. Наваляют ребята риффов, моментов интересных и приходят к нему, мол, помоги нам, великий. Тот улыбается и расставляет всё по своим местам. А что в итоге? Ничего. Песня претендует на балладу. Да на такую пакостную. Уши вянут. Сравнивать тянет с худшими номерами Хелловина. Типа “A Tale that Wasn’t Right” или ещё чего страшнее. Для меня, естественно.

“The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg”. Хоть что-то хорошее. Не впечатлит меня вначале, после нескольких раз прослушивания, ещё почитая, что о ней Харрис пишет, понял – 100% отражает суть альбома. Вроде, и не плохой номер, да и хорошим назвать нельзя. Нормальный – в самый раз.

“For the Greater Good of God”. Наконец-то! Шедевр! Только из-за одного этого номера стоило покупать альбом. Для тех кто не нашёл одноимённой песни на диске, поясняю – это и есть она. Самая длинная и прекрасная песня альбома. Нет, на неё надо молиться. Оба припева здесь просто шикарны. От чувственных слов плакать хочется. Каждое слово запоминается и врезается в сердце. Никакой затянутости. Никакой нудности или надежд на окончание. Вот так уж постарался бог. Нет, если бы её здесь не было, я бы диск в мусорное ведро выкинул. Единственный номер, который хоть как-то может конкурировать с лучшими песнями этой замечательной группы. Единственный минус – соло можно было и поинтересней выдумать!

“The Legacy”. Это что-то. Такого страшно непонятного трека у Девы ещё поискать следует. И непонятного, не в смысле сложного, а в смысле – причудливого. Акустика да бас вначале. Затем опять акустика. Я бы так сказал. Идеи кончились. Решили внести оригинальность. А гитара так вообще иногда лупит “Playing With Fire” Stratovarius’а. Нет, не могу слушать. Такой классный оригинал. Ну и пошли затем развивать начало. И опять Stratovarius. Да что ж такое. Хорошо хоть, недолго. Второе дыхание. Конечно, у нас же график в девять с половиной минут. Надо же что-то придумывать. Неплохой соляк и тема на уровне. Нет, в чём Iron Maiden всегда были чемпионами, так это в придумывании классных тем. Но извините меня. Слушать 7 минут, чтобы получить удовольствие в конце. Кем же это надо быть? Заканчивается в лучших традициях Мэйдена, нет Стратовариуса. Вернее – и тем и другим.

Да. Критика на протяжении всего написания лилась как из ведра. Извините, ничего не могу с собой поделать. Если диск не нравится, хоть пристрели, буду обижать. Даже если это чуть ли не самая моя любимая группа. По поводу объективной стороны. Качество, конечно, превосходное, может, даже лучше, чем на “Dance of Death”. Но разве в нём счастье? Хвалёные гитары звучат не очень. Всё просто подогнано под какие-то рамки. Как будто пришёл злой дядька и сказал – или так, или никак. Но в том-то и дело, что не было ничего подобного. Больнее всего читать, как сами музыканты признаются и расхваливают своё творение. А я ведь так верил, ждал. Полнейшая серость почти половины материала. Я даже посидел, сейчас ещё разок послушал альбом. Может, глухой? Нет. Раньше, когда-то давно, я таким был. Но сейчас. Среди рецензентов меня удивляют люди, которые ругают вокал Брюса. Если он высоко поёт, я тогда не знаю, как поёт Роб Халфорд. Насчёт текстов. Читал их в первый раз, сейчас не стал. Впечатление производят, и что с того? Когда под ними нет никакой музыки, всё впечатление куда-то быстренько исчезает. Такое впечатление, что ребята сами стали участниками войны, о которой они поют. Такой старой, и серой. Как в старых Советских фильмах. Чувств недостаточно. Про энергию я вообще промолчу. Если на предыдущих альбомах она была хоть маленькая, то здесь – еле-еле. Серый ландшафт, от которого мне хочется отвернуться. Удачные и оригинальные моменты спасают с трудом. Слишком слабо (для их-то уровня!). Или это возраст так влияет на ребят (которые уже давно как не ребята). Или это что-то другое здесь замешано. Я не знаю. Я не знаю, чего мне ждать от Девы. Если это и элитный “философский” метал, его философия мне не ясна. Может, молодой ещё, а может. просто не для меня это. Искренне рад за тех, кому это творение понравилось. Было бы просто ужасно, если бы оно не нашло своих поклонников. Но, несмотря на всё сказанное, я не имею права ставить низкую оценку этой работе. Хрен его знает, может, прозрею когда-нибудь. Может даже, расхвалю. Понравившиеся песни никуда ведь не делись. Но ясно одно. Мэйден не умер. Он всё ещё жив. Так же, как и его поклонники. К числу которых я причисляю и себя. И отдаю честь величайшей из групп, монументальной IRON MAIDEN.

Iron Maiden: A Matter Of Life And Death, Special Edition (CD+DVD)

Новый альбом легендарных хэви-металлистов Iron Maiden — всегда заметное событие, причем не только для преданных фэнов группы, но и для всего музыкального мира в целом. Полгода назад музыканты порадовали своих поклонников роскошным концертным DVD Death On The Road с записью тура в поддержку успешного альбома Dance Of Death, а теперь свет увидел и новый студийный материал «железных дев». Как и предыдущие две пластинки, A Matter Of Life And Death записан в классическом составе, то есть с Брюсом Дикинсоном в качестве вокалиста.

Разберем трек-лист альбома.

1. Different World (04:17)
Первый трек преподносит нам внушительную порцию классического скоростного хэви-металла. Яростные гитарные риффы в сочетании с моментально узнаваемым голосом Дикинсона и ураганной ритм-секцией сразу дают мощный импульс альбому, хотя отдельные интонации вызывают легкое ощущение дежавю — именно из-за того, что трек очень характерен для Iron Maiden.

2. These Colours Don’t Run (06:52)
А следующий номер — это многочастная эпическая композиция, которая состоит из нескольких разделов, внешне контрастных, но при этом отлично сочетающихся друг с другом. Начинается трек с небыстрого гитарного вступления, и только затем следует фирменный спид-металл с эмоционально-напряженным вокалом Дикинсона, который через некоторое время уступает место виртуозным гитарным запилам.

4. The Pilgrim (05:07)
Трек начинается с эффектного и очень крутого (иного слова и не подберешь) вступления, после чего опять стартует гитарно-ударный марафон. В окружении таких гигантов, как Brighter Than A Thousand Suns или The Longest Day, четвертый номер несколько теряется, хотя в мелодическом плане он не только не уступает, но может, даже превосходит вышеупомянутые композиции.

5. The Longest Day (07:48)
Еще более злые риффы (теперь тон задает бас-гитара), еще более яростная ритм-секция, еще более мрачная атмосфера… Iron Maiden от песни к песне повышают напряжение и эмоциональный накал, хотя, казалось бы, куда больше?

6. Out Of The Shadows (05:36)
Первые аккорды трека наводят на мысль, что перед нами очередной скоростной «боевик». Однако на поверку песня оказывается среднетемповой металлической балладой. Разумеется, не ждите от «железных дев» лирики (на то они и железные) — темы все прежние, пафос тоже никуда не делся, да и Дикинсон в припеве явно не собирается услаждать слух своим вокалом, но самоотверженно штурмует верхние границы вокального диапазона. Разнообразие вносит пара инструментальных вставок, последняя из которых к тому же перекликается со вступлением.

7. The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg (07:21)
А первый и пока единственный сингл наоборот начинается как баллада или, скорее, эпическое повествование — проникновенный негромкий голос, флегматичные гитарные переборы… Но вскоре настроение песни коренным образом меняется, и сдержанный музыкальный рассказ превращается в хэви-металлический гимн.

9. Lord Of Light (07:23)
Сказать что-то новое по поводу этой песни, увы, невозможно. При всей своей качественности она выглядит близнецом большинства предыдущих треков.

10. The Legacy (09:20)
Отличительная особенность завершающего номера — очень удачное вступление и заключение, исполняемые на акустической гитаре, благодаря чему стандартный и не особо запоминающийся металлический трек производит гораздо более приятное впечатление, чем, скажем, Lord Of Light. И продолжительность, конечно, впечатляет!

Общие впечатления от альбома

Один из самых продолжительных альбомов Iron Maiden получился очень ровным и выверенным. Мощные эпические композиции приведут в восторг поклонников группы, но… почти наверняка утомят всех остальных слушателей. Несмотря на качественность каждой песни в отдельности, все вместе это звучит довольно однообразно. После прослушивания двух-трех номеров начинает складываться впечатление, что большинство песен сделано по одному шаблону. Что это — верность традициям или невозможность придумать что-то оригинальное? Стремление не разочаровать старых поклонников или отсутствие свежих идей? При этом, как уже говорилось, в мелодическом плане альбом очень неплох. Пусть здесь и нет по-настоящему запоминающихся хитов (хотя отдельные интонации все же оседают в голове), но зато на каждом номере можно смело ставить знак качества — рок-ветераны знают свое дело!

Альбом Iron Maiden «A Matter Of Life And Death» вышел в двух вариантах: стандартном и специальном. Стандартное издание содержит только один диск Audio CD, тогда как специальное издание помимо Audio CD (полностью идентичного стандартному изданию) включает в себя DVD-Video диск с бонусными материалами.

Диск Audio CD

Несмотря на «происхождение» диска (EMI), никаких защит на Audio CD обнаружено не было. Резервное копирование треков проходит без проблем, а из CD Database можно получить название каждой песни альбома. К качеству звука претензий нет.

Диск DVD-Video

Широкоэкранное англоязычное меню DVD не анимировано, но озвучено. Общий стиль меню производит приятное впечатление. Навигация элементарно простая — никаких подменю не предусмотрено

Стандартная и не особо интересная документалка. Интервью чередуются с кадрами репетиций и студийных сессий. Впрочем, поклонникам группы будет очень любопытно посмотреть эту ленту.

The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg Video

Клип к первому синглу с альбома. В видеоролике очень необычный видеоряд: изображение состоит из нескольких «окошек», в одном из которых мы видим поющего Дикинсона, а в других — фотографии музыкантов и кадры из живых выступлений Iron Maiden.

При этом картинка сделана таким образом, как будто мы смотрим в эти «окошки» через грязное стекло, заляпанное брызгами и темными разводами… Первую минуту просмотра это производит впечатление, но затем становится скучновато. Все-таки от клипа с таким интригующим названием ожидаешь чего-то большего, нежели просто набор любопытных видеоэффектов.

Different World Video (04:39)

Студийное исполнение песни Different World. Изображение чуть смягчено, а яркость светлых участков картинки повышена, благодаря чему ролик приобретает особый шарм. Впрочем, никаких режиссерских находок здесь нет — студийное видео, не больше и не меньше.

Слайд-шоу из фотографий музыкантов Iron Maiden под музыку песни Out Of The Shadows.

Качество всех видеоматериалов очень хорошее, за исключением любительских съемок ручной камерой в документальном фильме. Впрочем, там их совсем немного. В целом картинка (в том числе и на документалке) может продемонстрировать отличную цветопередачу, высокой контрастность и четкость. Мелкое зерно на заднем плане появляется лишь изредка. Что касается звука, то единственная стереодорожка неплохо справляется с диалогами, а на клипах все же хотелось бы увидеть более «продвинутый» формат, нежели низкобитрейтный двухканальный Dolby Digital.

Общие впечатления от издания

Учитывая, что разница в цене между стандартным и специальным изданиями минимальна, покупка двухдискового варианта представляется более оправданной. Тем более что два представленных на DVD клипа больше ни на каких носителях не выпускались. Однако будьте готовы к тому, что DVD этот — на один просмотр, и самостоятельной ценности он не имеет.

В итоге перед нашим взором материализовался элегантный сиквел к «Dances Of Death», наполненный под завязку блестящими эпиками и преподнесенный общественности самими авторами как наивысшую ступень развития постреформенных Iron Maiden. Заявление в высшей степени неоднозначное, но, в конце концов, музыканты имеют права на некоторую долю пафоса, ведь с точки зрения сложности аранжировок и глубины палитры изобразительных средств свежему творению в рамках дискографии островитян равных нет. Здесь вам и традиционные мэйдановские риффы, акцентированный бас Харриса, сложные структурные композиции, оркестровые аранжировки и неувядающий вокал Брюса «Сирены» Дикинсона. Вдобавок у миллионеров от heavy metal хватило, наконец, ума заказать по-настоящему впечатляющую обложку, не ровню тому убожеству, что украшает «Dances Of Death». Без особого напряжения сил Железная дева подтверждает свой класс и не даёт ни малейшей возможности кому-либо приблизиться к трону стиля. «

Боевой дух Iron Maiden начали терять давно – еще с уходом Пола ДиАнно, но изначальный заряд был настолько силен, что хватило на 10 лет – потом Брюс ушел, оставивши коллег позориться одних – и все шишки посыпались на Блейза, но ведь музыку-то писал не он. Энергетический эффект реюниона был силен, и группу даже хватило на альбом «Brave New World» почти не уступавший их собственной классике. К несчастью только на один альбом. Конечно в «лучшем» своем духе Брюс потом матюгами и словесными конструкциями вроде «мы не собираемся всю жизнь играть музыку для подростков» убедит усомнившихся в нетленном величии нового творения, а самых усомнившихся заставит поверить в то, что они просто лохи позорные. Что группа ушла в недоступные их скорбному разуму выси горние, и если кто по-привычке требует энергичных и мелодичных песен, «как раньше только новых» то на то ему есть Motorhead и еще куча групп. А тут мы имеем дело с музыкальным мышлением иного порядка. И вообще кто сказал, что Iron Maiden должны играть какой-то там хэви!? Группа играет прогрессив-металл. А ет знаете ли музыка для умных.

Прогрессив-металл? Музыка для умных? Ах да, ведь Харрис фанат таких команд как Genesis, Jethro Tall, Yes. Но при чем тут прогрессив? Регулярные смены ритма и темпа, регулярные скачки от полуакустических переборов к тяжким риффам – это прогрессив? А по-моему это просто технические приемы. Перед нами беспардонно затянутая музыкальная жвачка – семьдесят с лишком минут утомительных гитарных подвигов, истошного крика Брюса, который словно разучился петь, (а ведь от его шедеврального сольника «Tyranny Of Soul» еще и года не минуло) и высосанных из мизинца левой ноги мелодий! Длинные песни, в которых много выкрутасов из разряда «как мы умеем играть», много «переходов», много балладных моментов, тяжелых риффов и нет запоминающихся мелодий, нет фирменных «мэйденовских» гитарно-басовых гармоний за которые их и любят уж 25 лет миллионы меломанов мира, нет и нормального рокерского драйва, энергетики.

Тяжелый, мрачный, стильно оформленный (хоть тут все слава богу) «A Matter Of Life And Death» потрясающе монотонен, сер, уныл. Атмосфера скорбного похмельного октябрьского утра конечно имеет право на существование в рок-музыке, но плиз, ребята, используйте ее по делу, кроме того хороша она как правило в doom. По музыке «A Matter Of Life And Death» является практически двойником (второй частью, развитием идей, продолжением – читай, как хочешь) приснопамятного альбома «X-Factor» эры Бейли, но тогда хоть понятно было, кого ругать.

Больше писать не буду ничего, что бы не попасть в ловушку разума, когда альбому ставишь более высокую оценку, чем он того заслуживает именно из-за большого количества внимательных прослушиваний, в ходе которых их него буквально выцеживаешь удачные моменты. Ну, там партию басовую, например. Либо гитарную. То есть фактически за свои трудо-часы. Ах да – забыл сказать, на «X-Factor» хотя бы «Man On The Edge» была. Тут ее аналог отсутствует. Вот-с.

Но ничего, фэны люди физически выносливые, морально стойкие. расслушают.

P.S.: Есть только два вопроса – к группе – почему турне играются на материале альбомов 1980-83 годов на половине которыхm, кстати, пел проклятый и убитый Пол ДиАнно? И к лично к Диккинсону – а откуда у тебя такой хороший сольник вышел в прошлом году?

P.P.S.: Аз есмь фэн Iron Maiden. Я их с 1990 года слушаю. Вот буквально пару дней, как «Powerslave» прокрутил к немерянному своему удовольствию. У меня их постеры на стене висят. Я их люблю. У меня даже сольники ДиАнно в коллекции есть. «

Альбом «A Matter of Life and Death», несомненно, является уникальной работой в дискографии «Железной Девы». Вышедший в преддверии диска сингл «The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg» напустил немало таинственности. Основной идеей песни стала исповедь человека, загадочно исчезнувшего, и, по всей видимости, обладавшего незаурядными способностями. Это трагическая история личности, могущей видеть то, что не способны видеть другие. Однако главной темой всей пластинки стали не мистические загадки людей, отдельных личностей или природы. Основная тематика песен диска это тема войны, приходящей и терзающей жизнь, как индивидуумов, так и всё человечество в целом.

И в плане музыки, построения композиций, и в плане текстов, IRON MAIDEN превзошли все ожидания. Казалось бы, столько гениальных произведений уже ими написано, а ведь идеи могут, пусть временно, но иссякнуть. После прослушивания этого, несомненно, великолепного альбома начинаешь думать, что IRON MAIDEN это не коснётся никогда. Музыкальные полотна большинства треков очень сложны, состоят из многих частей, различных по гармонии, музыкальному размеру. Некоторые треки содержат, по сути, два припева, так как бриджем первый из них трудно назвать. Элементы прогрессивного рока, уверенно набиравшие вес со времён «The X Factor» (1995), здесь достигли наибольшей концентрации. Проще говоря, альбом настолько разнообразен и сложен, мелодичен и грандиозен, что вряд ли вы найдёте ещё такой же в творчестве «Железной Девы» по совокупности его составляющих. Хотя каждый альбом этого британского секстета хорош по-своему.

Два заключительных трека, «Lord of Light» и «The Legacy», не отходят далеко от главной идеи альбома, но дают немного прийти в себя после такого наплыва чувств и эмоций от прослушивания предыдущей композиции. Один только недостаток: пока ты приходишь в себя, они заканчиваются, и ты не успеваешь их расслушать, а ведь звучат они в совокупности порядка семнадцати минут. Впрочем, этот недостаток весьма условный. Альбом «A Matter of Life and Death» захочется переслушать ещё ни один раз, и, поверьте, каждый раз там найдёшь что-то доселе неведомое и неуслышанное. «Есть тайны, что ты хранишь»… Стоп! Это уже строка из «Lord of Light»! Забавно, но, быть может, в этом и есть интрига… «

Сколько песен было написано, переписано, переиграно, сфальшивино. Но Iron Maiden всегда оставались, остаются и будут оставаться двигателем прогресса (пусть и подспудно) heavy индустрии. Ни одна команда в мире тяжелой музыки не оказывала на нее же такое влияние как сама «Железная Дева». Альбом, тур, альбом, тур – лучше год от года, но непревзойденней, хотя и великолепней, предшественник. О творчестве Iron Maiden нельзя судить однозначно – есть команда и будет делать свою музыку. Как нельзя требовать от атлета пробегать дистанции на одной скорости в течении 25 лет. Да пусть не будет больше «Seventh»‘ов, «Beast»‘ов и т.д., но сейчас настал новый этап для группы, поэтому к нему стоит подойти не критично, а с пониманием и вдохновением.

В целом творчество Maiden можно разделить на ряд этапов (судя по альбомам):
1. Di’Anno и Heavy Metal Punk (1980 – 1981).
2. Beast & other’s True Hard’n’Heavy (1982-1985).
3. The Great Synth Metal (1986-1989)
4. Hard’n’Heavy Rock (1990-1994)
5. Epic NoFuture (1995-1999)
6. The Greatful Synth Epic Metal (2000 – 2006)

Но это так, досужие рассуждения. Перейдем-ка непосредственно к альбому. Самое трудное при оценки творчества IM – это сравнивать их альбомы. Слишком самобытен каждый из них. Попробую оградить себя от этой ошибки, хотя сравнения все же будут. Итак. Год 2006.

1. «Different World». Продолжает цепочку из «Wicker Man» & «Wicked Dreams». Горячее риффовое вступление. Отличие от указанных заключается в намечающейся даже здесь эпичности + великолепнейшем вокале Брюса в припеве. Минус – повторение некоторых слоганов по несколько раз. Наследие Блейза, которое никак не выйдет из Харриса. Или наследие самого Харриса, которое никак не выйдет из него. Вокал стал кстати более сухой – мне кажется потерял из-за этого.

2. «These Colours Don’t Run». Вот и пошли чистые эпики. Если на «Dance. » это сводилось к какой-то симфоничности, то здесь крупные и многозначные эпические произведения. Эта вещь смотрится кстати особняком среди себе подобных. Очень своеобразный рифф и рит.

3. «Brighter Than A Thousand Suns». По идеи напоминает предшествующую песню. Но эпичность (извините за частое повторение этого слова, но без него нельзя) здесь пересиливает все. И это не плохо, это очень хорошо. Растянутость является лишь достоинством композиции. Брюс как всегда замечателен. Вот только gallop-партия в середине смотрится суховато. Ненасыщенно. Так назовем.

4. «The Pilgrim». Своеобразное начало не предвещает скоростного продолжения. Но вот. Fast Song. Бридж отдает «The Thin Line. » А проигрыш «The Nomad. » Но не печальтесь. Не плагиат. И слушается свежо. Только приглушенный звук всего альбома досаждает именно здесь. Как сквозь вату. Японский CD еще не приобрел – может там по-другому.

5. «The Longest Day». Знаете эта песня меня заставили и фильм с аналогичным названием посмотреть. Захотел увидеть откуда черпаются идеи песен. Очередной эпик. И знаете песня получилась глубоко насыщенней, чем кино. Вернее в эти 8 минут вобралось все действо картины. Нарастающий в песни депрессивный темп погружает нас в события на Нормане. А потом припев! И вот она победа! Такая тяжелая. Но победа.

6. «Out Of The Shadows». Эх, Брюс! Ну почему ты не записал ее для сольника. Великолепная песня, но особо неподходящая под линию всего альбома. Хотя вру. Записал. «Tears Of The Dragon». А это – Part 2. Опять не плагиат, но наверно самый неудачный трэк альбома. Нет, повторюсь, он ХОРОШ до безумия, но не для «A Matter. «

7. «The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg». Сингл. Ну зачем это для сингла? Песня классная. Но на сингл не тянет. Из уважения в Дэвиду? Эпик. А вы как думали? Не блещет конечно, но стоит того, чтобы слушать.

8. «For The Greater Good Of God». Какое хитрое и завуалированное наследие «The X-Factor». «Blood On A World’s Hands» + «Judgement Of Heaven». Но как звучит. Хит из хитов. Эх. Представляю как пел бы Брюс на студийнике Judgement. А может перезаписать? Но в отличии от названных мной опусов получился именно эпик. Быстрый, энергиченый.

9. «Lord Of Light». Запашек «Dance Of Death» Album. Хотя ритм. Такой мы уже слышали на самом «A Matter. » Но он чудесен. Идея хорошо. Слушается – выше всяких похвал!

10. «The Legacy». Вот это ни на что не похоже. Особенно хороша гитара с глубоким эхо. Да, легенда. Стоит того, чтобы. Занести весь альбом в КЛАССИКУ. Пусть ему и только пару лет, но Iron Maiden с их талантом, воплощающимся в каждом альбоме стоят того. «

A Matter of Life and Death

A Matter of Life and Death is the fourteenth studio album by Iron Maiden. It was released on 25 August 2006 in Italy and in Finland, 28 August worldwide, and 5 September 2006 in the United States, Canada and Japan. It is the first album in Iron Maiden’s career to enter the U.S. Billboard charts in the top 10 and the third album where Steve Harris has had a song writing credit on every track, and has seen significant chart success in many other countries.

While the album is not a concept album, war and religion are recurring themes in the lyrics throughout the album, as well as in the album’s artwork. The title is also linked with the war theme, as it shared with a 1946 film whose primary character is a WWII Royal Air Force pilot, though singer Bruce Dickinson has stated that the title and dark lyrical themes came partly from the band members’ childhood experiences having grown up in the Cold War era amid common fears of imminent destruction and war.

The A Matter of Life and Death Tour was the tour supporting the album, where the band played the album live in its entirety.

The band, still consisting of the same lineup as their previous two and next three studio albums (making it the most stable lineup), started to write the songs near the end of 2005 after their hugely successful appearances in the U.S. and Europe. By the end of the year, the songs were completed and they began rehearsing at Sarm West Studios in London.

At 72 minutes, A Matter of Life and Death is the band’s third longest album, exceeding 1995’s The X Factor by approximately one minute, and exceeded by 2010’s The Final Frontier by approximately four minutes, and 2015’s The Book of Souls by over twenty minutes. A Matter of Life and Death puts emphasis on creating atmospheres befitting the darker lyrical themes and long sprawling epics with changes in tempo and dynamics, in contrast to the riff-driven music of the band’s early days. This darker direction of the lyrical viewpoint can even be seen in the shorter songs «Different World» and «The Pilgrim.»

In order to provide a more «live» sound, the album was not mastered. Producer Kevin Shirley said, «Spoke to ‘Arry (Steve Harris) on Friday, who has decided against mastering the Iron Maiden album. It means that you will get to hear the new album exactly as it sounded in the studio, no added EQ, compression, analogue widening, etc., and I must say, I am pretty happy with the end result.»

This is the band’s fourth studio album not to share its name with a song, following Piece of Mind, The X Factor and Virtual XI.

The album cover was created by Tim Bradstreet, an American artist, best known for his work on the Hellblazer and Punisher comics.

During their North American, Japanese and European tours, the band performed the entire album in full. They announced after the show at Earl’s Court, London on December 23, 2006, that the album would never be played in its entirety again.

The album is the only Iron Maiden album since Iron Maiden where all of the songs have been played live.

Critical response [ ]

The album was met with positive reviews. Metal Hammer rated the album 10/10 and stated that «Iron Maiden have utterly surpassed themselves», Kerrang! rated it 5/5 and said «Another [Iron] Maiden classic. Keeps what longtime fans loved about the band alive.» Classic Rock also awarded it Album of the Year, and the band won an award voted by Classic Rock readers, for the album. Rolling Stone gave the album 3 stars out of 5, finding the music and lyrics «relevant.» However, the magazine also claims that «the songs now march where they once galloped», implying that the band is «ageing gracefully».

The first single to be released from the album was » The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg «. It was released on 14 August 2006. On 10 August 2006, «Different World» was put on the official website for everyone to hear. The following day » Brighter than a Thousand Suns » was also put on the official site for public streaming.

» Different World » was the second single released from the album. [ It has already been receiving airplay on many rock radio stations. The song also features an animated video, similar to that of » Wildest Dreams «.

DVD documentary [ ]

In addition to the standard CD release, A Matter of Life and Death was also released in a limited edition version which contains a bonus DVD. The DVD, which has a total runtime of nearly one hour, contains a half-hour documentary, plus videos and photos all shot whilst the band were making the album. The documentary «The Making of A Matter of Life and Death», directed by Matthew Amos (director of The Early Days and Death on the Road DVD documentaries), features candid video footage shot largely by Kevin Shirley himself during the recording of the album giving a behind-the-scenes look at life in the studio. The bonus DVD also features the full video promo for » The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg «, and a special intimate filming of the band recording «Different World» in the studio. The album is also available as a limited edition double picture disc vinyl in gatefold sleeve, and as a digital download.

An update on Iron Maiden’s official website stated that «in just the first week the new album has shipped over a million copies worldwide and impacted on the charts pretty well everywhere in the world». The album marked Iron Maiden’s first album to place in the top ten in the Billboard 200, as well as being the highest-charting hard rock album ever in India, debuting at number four. The album went gold in Finland in its first week. This gold record became Maiden’s 8th from Finland.

Review

It’s finally upon us. After months of waiting, colossal heavy metal band Iron Maiden has finally released their 14th album, A Matter of Life and Death. The latest highly anticipated offering from the band continues the progressive influenced direction that they’ve been taking over the last few years again, with contributions from all members. Way back when in my Powerslave review, I predicted that the new album would be an excellent one, however, it would not be able to match what I consider Iron Maiden’s best two albums, Powerslave and Somewhere in Time. So now that the album has been released, was my prediction right, does A Matter of Life and Death surpass all that the band has done before?

Without giving away the answer to the previous sentence, I can safely say that A Matter of Life and Death is by far the band’s best album in years. Iron Maiden’s latest offering represents a climax of sorts that is similar to the expression «walk before you run.» Yes my friends, the epic trends that began showing up in Iron Maiden’s often criticized album, The X Factor, and weaved their way through the next few are present on this album and they are at their very best. So that’s fine and dandy, but what do I refer to when I mention that expression? Well, the beginning stages of the sound that the band has been attempting to perfect during the past ten years can be compared to the beginning stages of basic movement. Material like The Edge of Darkness and The Educated Fool showed Maiden fans a lot of promise, yet they didn’t showcase the band at its top level. Iron Maiden’s musical experimentation began to walk with the return of Bruce and Adrian on 2000’s Brave New World album. Finally with Dance of Death, the sound began showing the fruits of its labour, conceiving arguably the band’s greatest masterpiece, Paschendale, and successfully transforming that walk to a jog/light run. Finally, in 2006, Iron Maiden takes the momentum drawn from their last couple albums & tours and upgrades their jog to a wild sprint. To summarize, Steve Harris and co. took the highest points of the band’s last four albums and welded them into a 71 minute album than cannot be described without the words powerful and epic.

Not since Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, or perhaps even Somewhere in Time, has Iron Maiden come up with an album that utilizes the strengths of the band as well as A Matter of Life and Death. Through 10 songs, the sextet shows off their songwriting chops with epic atmospheres, melodic interludes, several time changes, sing-along choruses, and excellent, heavy (by Maiden’s standards) riffs. Right from the get go, the guitarists Adrian, Dave, and Janick show listeners that the band means business with an aggressive riff that starts off the album’s opener, Different Worlds. This attitude is picked up by the other members of the band and it is an attitude they do not quickly drop. Of course, there are many impressive solos from the three guitarists, and this is just the icing on the cake. Or perhaps the cake under the icing, since I prefer to icing. For many of the songs, take Brighter than a Thousand Suns or The Pilgrim for example, the soloing does not take the spotlight, but is just as vital to the songs progression as the winding interludes, catchy choruses, or heavy bridges. Think Paschendale, from Dance of Death. In other songs, such as The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg, a very riff based track, the soloing really helps change things up. Yes, Iron Maiden does not flop musically, and well, did you really expect them to? Each song uses the strengths of the band to their fullest advantage, which makes for a very strong album, easily one of the band’s strongest.

Frontman Bruce Dickinson has a very strong showing on A Matter of Life and Death. Bruce’s wails may not be at the same level as they were 23 years ago, but Bruce can still let it loose with the best of them, as he proves during the chorus of Iron Maiden’s latest war epic, The Longest Day. Another instance where he impresses is in the 9:23 epic titled For the Greater Good of God. Not to be outdone by his other metal contemporaries, Bruce also spends a chunk of the album singing in a lower range. The epic build up in, again, The Longest Day, or the quiet intros that start up songs like Brighter than a Thousand Suns and The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg shows off this lower vocal range. One song that uses Bruce’s vocals to help carry the song is the semi-ballad Out of the Shadows, which bares resemblance to both Bruce’s solo song Tears of the Dragon and Maiden’s Wasting Love. Despite being in his late 40’s, Bruce Dickinson is very effective on A Matter of Life and Death, and shows no signs of slowing down.

Songwriting wise, the band has mixed things up. In the past, Iron Maiden has written many songs about war including the likes of The Trooper, Aces High, and Paschendale, however, many of these songs were more adrenaline rising, textbook examples about what it was like to be part of a cavalry charge, defending the motherland from an air raid, or trench warfare. On A Matter of Life and Death, the band takes a different direction with their war subjects. Even on the album cover, the war topic takes another approach. Quite similarly to the first lines of Brighter Than a Thousand Suns which are as follows «We are not the sons of God / We are not his people anymore…» the skeleton soldiers represent the human beings who have been dehumanitized into trained killers. This is but one of the subjects that the lyric writers address on the album, with others including the motivation of soldiers in These Colours Don’t Run, the ruining of human lives that certain events such as the D-Day Invasion of Normandy inflict upon the world, and living under the threat of annihilation after the creation of the atomic bomb in Brighter Than a Thousand Suns. But the entire album does not just focus on war. Iron Maiden’s song writers also comment on subjects such as religion in songs like For the Greater Good of God and Lord of Light. Upon listening to the album, I was pleased to find out that songwriting mainstays of Iron Maiden choose not to alienate fans by picking and choosing sides of a conflict. Rather, the band makes observations of events taking place in the world. For the Greater Good of God for example, sheds light on those who use religion as a tool to destroy, rather than a peaceful way to live life as it was intended. These Colours Don’t Run also fits this claim, as it deals with the reason people from both sides of the conflict pick take up arms, rather than the «They hate you and they hate your freedom/religion/ideals etc» propaganda that the world leaders feed their nations. I’m quite satisfied with the lyrical direction the band took with this album, and the choice of song subjects makes A Matter of Life and Death one of, if not my favourite Maiden album of all time in that area, even toping the likes of Somewhere in Time and Brave New World.

So by now you must think the new album is perfect right? Well in a perfect world, yes, it would be perfect. But this is not a perfect world, nothing is perfect. After listening to A Matter of Life and death several times, there is very little to complain about. One flaw, however, is the song lengths. With an average length of 7:11 and ten songs, A Matter of Life and Death might be a tad long for some listeners, especially on their first few spins. Now, I feel the band does a good job with these long tracks and I really enjoy the long interludes, bridges, and melodies that extend the length of the songs. However, I can also see where some listeners are coming from if they were to say they were disappointed by the song lengths. That said, people put off by song lengths should be thankful that there isn’t any snooze-fests such as Fortunes of War or The Angel and the Gambler present on the album.

So the question still stands, doesn’t it? Is A Matter of Life and Death better than what I consider Iron Maiden’s best album, Powerslave? *commence cheesy drum-roll* …No. However, after listening to it virtually all day, I would say it can definitely say it can stand right next to the Powerslaves and Somewhere in Times and not look out of place. A Matter of Life and Death contains everything fans want to hear; be it exciting, Maiden-style story telling; aggressive riffs; impressive solos; or melodic harmonies. A Matter of Life and Death has got to be a strong candidate for album of the year, and I definitely recommend it to everybody.

Iron Maiden — это сильные харизматичные личности

Брюс Дикинсон, благодаря уникальной манере пения и поведению на сцене, вознес Iron Maiden на запредельную высоту, но его не менее впечатляющие достижения лежат за пределами группы. В юности Брюса отстранили от церковного хора, сказав ему, что он не умеет петь — это послужило как толчком к увлечению музыкой «назло», так и к антирелигиозным убеждениям. Iron Maiden собирали стадионы в первую очередь за счет преданности фанатов и сарафанного радио. В Maiden существует правило: ни звукозаписывающие компании, ни менеджмент не могут влиять на творческий процесс. Оно было введено в 1983 году, когда после успеха сингла Run to the Hills представители лейбла, оказавшиеся в студии во время записи альбома Piece of Mind, высказали недовольство тем, что сингл Flight of Icarus звучал «иначе». Как говорят члены фан-клуба Iron Maiden, каждый концерт группы по эмоциям — как решающий футбольный матч, который твоя любимая команда всегда выигрывает.

В отличие от многих коллег по жанру, бесконечно эксплуатирующих темы фэнтези и хоррора, Maiden основали многие песни на классической поэзии, книгах, фильмах и телевидении. Rime of the Ancient Mariner вдохновлена трудами Самюэла Тейлора Кольриджа, The Prisoner посвящена одноименному телешоу, To Tame a Land написана по мотивам «Дюны» Герберта.

Maiden любят высказываться и на актуальные темы — Holy Smoke высмеивает популярную в конце 80-х индустрию телепроповедников, а Tears of a Clown написана под влиянием от самоубийства комика Робина Уильямса. Но несмотря на серьезность тематики творчества, группа относится к себе с юмором и любит фарс — достаточно посмотреть концертные шоу с пиротехникой и надувным дьяволом за барабанной установкой. Или на обложки альбомов, выполненные в нарочито комиксовом стиле.

Учитывая возраст музыкантов группы (Макбрейну скоро стукнет 70), высока вероятность, что семнадцатый студийный альбом группы станет финальным — если так, то это последняя возможность для фанатов изучать тизеры, по сто раз переслушивать лид-сингл, рассматривать новую обложку с Эдди и запоминать новый трек-лист. Начинается, наверное, заключительная глава в великой истории самой обожаемой металл-группы на планете — очень хочется, чтобы эта история закончилась на высокой ноте, ведь других Maiden просто не берет.

Альбом «A Matter of Life and Death», несомненно, является уникальной работой в дискографии «Железной Девы». Вышедший в преддверии диска сингл «The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg» напустил немало таинственности. Основной идеей песни стала исповедь человека, загадочно исчезнувшего, и, по всей видимости, обладавшего незаурядными способностями. Это трагическая история личности, могущей видеть то, что не способны видеть другие. Однако главной темой всей пластинки стали не мистические загадки людей, отдельных личностей или природы. Основная тематика песен диска это тема войны, приходящей и терзающей жизнь, как индивидуумов, так и всё человечество в целом.

И в плане музыки, построения композиций, и в плане текстов, IRON MAIDEN превзошли все ожидания. Казалось бы, столько гениальных произведений уже ими написано, а ведь идеи могут, пусть временно, но иссякнуть. После прослушивания этого, несомненно, великолепного альбома начинаешь думать, что IRON MAIDEN это не коснётся никогда. Музыкальные полотна большинства треков очень сложны, состоят из многих частей, различных по гармонии, музыкальному размеру. Некоторые треки содержат, по сути, два припева, так как бриджем первый из них трудно назвать. Элементы прогрессивного рока, уверенно набиравшие вес со времён «The X Factor» (1995), здесь достигли наибольшей концентрации. Проще говоря, альбом настолько разнообразен и сложен, мелодичен и грандиозен, что вряд ли вы найдёте ещё такой же в творчестве «Железной Девы» по совокупности его составляющих. Хотя каждый альбом этого британского секстета хорош по-своему.

Два заключительных трека, «Lord of Light» и «The Legacy», не отходят далеко от главной идеи альбома, но дают немного прийти в себя после такого наплыва чувств и эмоций от прослушивания предыдущей композиции. Один только недостаток: пока ты приходишь в себя, они заканчиваются, и ты не успеваешь их расслушать, а ведь звучат они в совокупности порядка семнадцати минут. Впрочем, этот недостаток весьма условный. Альбом «A Matter of Life and Death» захочется переслушать ещё ни один раз, и, поверьте, каждый раз там найдёшь что-то доселе неведомое и неуслышанное. «Есть тайны, что ты хранишь»… Стоп! Это уже строка из «Lord of Light»! Забавно, но, быть может, в этом и есть интрига… «
