Life is Strange is an episodic, story-driven game that largely flew under my radar for years. After playing through the game multiple times Life is Strange is an episodic, story-driven game that largely flew under my radar for years. After playing through the game multiple times now, I wish I had known about this game sooner as it’s become one of my favourite games of the 2010s.
The story follows Max Caulfield, a shy, introverted photography student who returns to her hometown of Arcadia Bay after having lived in Seattle for the past 5 years. After having a premonition/daydream of a deadly tornado bearing down on the town, she discovers she has time rewinding capabilities when she saves a mysterious blue-haired girl from being shot in the Girl’s bathroom by Nathan Prescott; son of the richest man in Arcadia Bay, Sean Prescott. After escaping a confrontation with Nathan in the school parking lot, Max runs into the blue-haired girl again only to discover that it’s her longtime best friend Chloe Price. As they drive away from Blackwell, Chloe expresses resentment towards Max after she moved away to Seattle and didn’t talk to her for 5 years. They get back to Chloe’s place and Max learns more about the girl on the missing persons poster Rachel Amber: The DA’s daughter and Chloe’s best friend after Max left for Seattle. Max learns that Chloe and Rachel had plans to leave Arcadia Bay to head for Los Angeles when one day, Rachel disappeared without a trace, leaving Chloe heartbroken and abandoned yet again. From there, Max and Chloe work together to uncover the mystery behind Rachel Amber’s disappearance by gathering clues, evidence and unearthing Arcadia Bay’s dirty secrets.
I’ll park the bus here in terms of explaining the game’s plot because ultimately, I’m going to recommend you play this game; you truly need to experience it for yourself.
The strong character focus and relationship development for Max and Chloe is what really stood out to me about this game. Despite some justifiable hard feelings from Chloe in the early stages of the game, watching the two of them rekindle their friendship from when they were kids is a truly heart warming to experience and definitely makes you feel something for the two of them. To watch Max’s character evolve from this rather meek and shy student to this bold, brave and fierce «Everyday Hero» is something to really root for as well as being a driving force behind the game’s story. Conversely, to watch Chloe go from a rebellious punk with a tough, hardened exterior, to a softened, caring and more vulnerable character made some emotions spark off my otherwise cold, black heart.
The core gameplay loop revolves around interacting with NPCs via dialogue trees, Max’s time rewind ability and finding clues for their investigation into the disappearance of Rachel Amber. Max’s rewind ability allows her to change her response to a question or undo an action after seeing what sort of consequences it might beget. Her rewind also allows her to steal items surreptitiously that are a key part of their investigation since items in Max’s inventory stay with her and aren’t affected by her rewind powers.
Graphically, the game is a bit of a mixed bag. The overall presentation of some of the game’s set pieces such as Blackwell Academy and the Pacific Northwest coast line are satisfactory, but the game also suffers from «Mass Effect Andromeda Syndrome» where the characters’ facial animations look really «wooden» and stiff. As such they don’t seem to be able to emote a whole lot unless they’re crying. Some of the lip-syncing is downright brutal and further contributes to the «wooden» facial animations. Some of the dialogue, particularly the use of «slang» that gets used seem misplaced and cringeworthy to the point of immersion breaking for me. I wouldn’t say any of these things are deal breakers since the game does plenty of other things right and is an overall net positive experience, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t flag any of them.
My biggest gripe with the game is it’s ending. The game starts out kind of slowly but builds to a pretty serious crescendo. While the final interaction between Max and Chloe is definitely memorable and gut wrenching, it more or less boils down 5 episodes and roughly 10 to 15 hours of gameplay into a binary «this or that» choice, rendering all of your previous choices largely immaterial. Fix the ending and Life is Strange becomes a borderline dream game for me.
Overall, Life is Strange is a definite recommendation for it’s great story and wonderful character arcs. … Expand

On a road trip with the main characters you meet good and bad people and have to make the right calls on who to trust. Main topics are family, racism and living on the road. Beautiful scenery and classical, nostalgic life is strange-feeling.
Having read most of the negative comments I can say that they either are angry that the popular characters from the first game did not come back or claim that the main characters being victims of racism is «leftist SJW-propaganda», so if you are triggered by the existence of racism you probably should not play this game. … Expand

This is an example of a game that takes many disparate supposed influences, then implements all of them badly. As usual with my reviews, I’m This is an example of a game that takes many disparate supposed influences, then implements all of them badly. As usual with my reviews, I’m going to start off with the aesthetics of the game, then talk about the writing and dialogue, then conclude with mechanics, then summarize. Let’s get started.
First up, Life is Strange’s design choices look like something that was put together by someone who has only experienced American youth culture secondhand. It takes extreme examples of some icons, then copy/pastes them together in some «hella» strange mixture of stereotypes that sort of belong in a satirical movie, ( which, in my opinion, this «game» desperately wants to be, but we’ll get to that later.)
You have the hipster teacher, complete with the stereotypical thick glasses, the well intentioned white knight Warren, Chloe, then of course, Max Caulfield. All of which would be great in a movie like say, Junebug. I find it rather flat and uninspiring. But hey, looks aren’t everything right? Let’s move on. The animation and graphics are quite dated looking, and the interface felt clunky.
So let’s talk about the writing. It bills itself as inspired by Twin Peaks, Donnie Darko, Groundhog Day, etc, yet captures nothing of the charm of any of those movies. The dialogue once again, felt like a satirized version of something someone heard that one time, from that really obnoxious teenager in that one movie. The dialogue is pretty cringey, and the portrayal of a lot of the characters in the game left me feeling no sense of attachment to any of them. I wonder how badly you have to miss the mark, if you have to bill yourself more to fans of movies, rather than gamers? I digress.
Mechanically, again, the game feels clunky, it’s a mess of casual pandering QTEs, and falls into some ridiculous adventure game tropes, which is odd, considering how much the marketing is billing itself as more of an interactive movie than as an actual game.
So to summarize, I feel like this game is simply attempting to pander to the Telltale market, but ultimately fails to find anything in common with that demographic. If you’re a fan of walking simulators like Gone Home, you’d probably find a lot to like here, but for a core gamer looking for something to actually play, I couldn’t recommend spending money on it. There are better games out there with time rewinding mechanics, if that’s your hook. I give it a solid 4 to a 5 at best. For fans of the genre only. … Full Review »

Well it turns out it can still be pretty damn good. There are a few things I didn’t like so much but overall it was a great way to build upon the story and flesh out characters.
I especially like what they did with Frank, Chloe’s drug dealer. I felt like they added some good depth to him and he had some of my favorite moments of the game. Mikey and Steph also had one of the better moments of the game when you can play a D&D game with them. I guess my main issue with the game was that, while Life is Strange had no shortage of teenage angst to it, there was also a lot of serious issues covered such as murder, a missing friend, suicide and the destruction of the town. Before the Storm does cover what it can such as the death of Chloe’s father, a bit of political corruption and one very deranged drug dealer but overall there is a lot of angst for the sake of having teenage angst than heavy issues. Overall though it was still enjoyable and had some touching coming of age moments as well. One thing I liked was there were plenty of reasons to both like and dislike pretty much each character. Like in life no one is perfect and sometimes you want to smack someone upside the head even if you care about them.
The gameplay is pretty similar to the original where you have to solve some light puzzles to progress, many of which won’t give anyone too much trouble. Except for the amulet puzzle in the bonus episode. That thing took way more effort than I expected. You get plenty of dialogue options and choices to try and tailor the story to you. The graphics are surprisingly similar to the original. I expected more of a change considering the engine change but there wasn’t. While the graphics aren’t worse they also aren’t better. The game always had kind of a comic book type of vibe going for it not outright realism so I’m not being overly hard on that front. The voice acting was well done across the board. The soundtrack was awesome and really fit the game well.
I played Before the Storm on Linux. I used version 1.0.1 of the game on Steam. The game uses the Unity engine where the original used the Unreal Engine 3. This allowed the game to run much better. The original never ran great for me on Linux, usually 20-30 FPS maxed out and that is par the course for Unreal 3. Before the Storm maxed out ran at a constant 144 FPS with the odd dip to the 130’s for a second or two. I credit the engine switch with that as Unreal 3 was never really a great engine for Linux. Option wise there are 4 different AA settings, Vsync and two other graphics settings. Sadly Alt-Tab doesn’t work. My system while playing the game used between 3.2-5.1GB of system RAM, and between 7-26% of my CPU. There were no manual save options, it was all checkpoint based. Luckily I never lost too much progress if I had to quit but manual saving would have still been preferable. You can pause cut scenes but you can’t skip them. The game used 22.66GB of storage. The game never crashed on me but I did have an issue that happened 3 times where it would say “starting” in Steam when I went to launch the game but it never actually opened. I had to manually kill the process for the game and logout/login to Steam again to get it to run. I noticed no other glitches or issues.

Saw a few positive LiS: TC reviews so I thought it was prime time to jump back in. I left somewhat mixed.
PROS:
— Great graphics w/ very stylish presentation
— Amazing soundtrack & mood
— Very authentic voice acting
— Exceptional facial (subtle) animations
— Core gameplay was good if you’re into this kind of thing
— Romance was spot on — not a lot of choice but what’s given was good
CONS:
— REALLY short — less than half of original LiS length & finished it in about 5-6 hours
— Alex was well written but felt disconnected and very hard to relate
— Much subtler story & about one’s life so if you can relate, it’s great but otherwise, you really won’t care
— Some choices are consequential while others felt like whatever
Overall decent, but just wish it was longer. I rarely complain about game’s length but the full price ($60 in this case) for a game that you can beat in 5
P.S. The «review bombing» thing is way blown out of proportion. This is not a major title & at the time of writing, there’re only

If you’ve ever played a LIS game then you know they’re gritty and dark. A lot of people seem to be put off since they find the game political. I don’t think it is, I think it’s a reflection of our times which shouldn’t be ignored. And it’s real, the characters are real their opinions are real, why hide it? (And if you think it’s exaggerated check out the film ‘Look Who’s Back’ to hear the genuine unscripted views of some of the German public. It’s a worldwide thing.
Another group of people are refusing to give it a chance because there is no Max and Chloe. Their loss. With that logic they shouldn’t play any game again since Max and Chloe aren’t in those either.
Now that that’s out of the way: The story thus far is tense, sometimes ruined by the pacing though. There is hope offered, we do meet one very nice character in particular. I liked how you can influence your younger brother, sometimes negatively, it shows how impressionable young kids are.
It has the usual LIS style but this time I could have done with a bit more detail, it would’ve given life to some of the outdoor scenes.
That’s all i can say for now without giving away spoilers. I’m very interested to see what happens in episode 2, the end of the first left me very emotional (much sooner than it did in the first game).
EDIT: And this is why people shouldn’t judge so quickly. The second episode had a much different vibe, and without spoiling anything, you meet a lot more people and it’s nice seeing different relationships form and witnessing a bit of warmth and joy. … Expand

The story does not have too much to offer, it’s simple, not very complicated, the choices do not matter a lot. This game does not compare to the original LIS, but it’s way better than the second one. As a comparison the first game being the largest black hole in the universe this is just an ant and the second one a grain of sand.
It’s an example of how good music can make a game that is not as well thought in the matter of storytelling and mechanics, to be good. If the game didn’t have the awesome soundtrack it would be a 4/10, not an 8/10. The soundtrack is awesome, the zen moments are an awesome idea, a thing that I was doing since I started gaming it’s now supported and encouraged by developers. I found myself sit 15 minutes or more in a zen moment just watching the beautiful graphics and feeling the song.
But still, the soundtrack isn’t as good as the first game, but it’s still very good. But I was expecting way more, given that Alex is intro music. And music being the central theme that revolves through the game. In the first game that was the photography and in the second drawing. So I think we deserved more attention to the music. We received less music than in the first game.
For the story, I don’t know how you can miss this bad, with the background being so perfect, lonely, and peaceful town, Alex the protagonist that is a newcomer and is awaiting to see the mysteries that the town can offer. It could be much better, anyone can think of something better. So I must assume that they did that on purpose, the story is so simple on purpose, like a manifest that things aren’t always so complicated and complex. I respect the writers’ decision, the game didn’t make me burst into tears like in the first list, but it didn’t make me wish that it ends faster like the second one.
The graphics are awesome, the eyes of the characters are so cool, like how the move, respecting the classic lis art style, is so beautiful. The town the Main Street, the road, omg just fills you with an ease and peaceful emotion.
Another thing that I noticed, playing this on the ps5. Is the dualsense missed opportunities. The game has dual sense support, but it’s not there in all of the cases that it could be. I mean it isn’t hard to feel on a playthrough where that feedback is missing and you are wondering why so easy to find those spots.
I think biggest the problem with this game is that the first one exists, the game is worth playing and buying, one of the best games of this year, but when you compare it with Life Is Strange, the original, you even can’t compare, the masterpiece of gaming and storytelling it’s hella light-years away from True Colors. … Expand

Unfortunately, somehow, in this case «Remaster» seems to mean: we introduced a swath of graphical and technical glitches into the (brilliant) original that will kill any and all enjoyment you might have had with the game otherwise.
Literally, there are eye sores like T-Posing Characters in dramatic, emotional cut scenes, «flickering» bugs that are supposed to be a graphical improvement, and other niceties like missing technical features in menus that the original had.
And to round it all off you won’t even be able to realize the improvements of supposed 4K textures outside of searching for them with a magnyfying glass next to the screen.
This is an abysmal money grab by the Overlords of Square Enix, who seemed to have Deck Nine at gunpoint and rushing them for a quick cash infusion to make up for their failed Marvel Avengers adventure most likely.

… Expand

This game is, quite honestly, one of the best games that I have ever played. Before I get into the review I just wanted to say, though, that it’s very possible you’ve heard something about the social justice undertones in this series. I can confirm these. On multiple occasions the protagonist mutters phrases like «wow, I should volunteer for [save the bay effort]», or have hints that the best friend wouldn’t use hair products with animals in it, or that guns should only be for women, etc. The protagonist herself is very reminiscent of a hipster, for a number of reasons too.
Onto the dialogue. It was pretty poor. There were some moments where a line was delivered and I felt bad for whoever had to voice-act it. It was just so simplistic at some points. I can’t exactly put it into words. Also, the banter is compeletely out of touch. I heard the word selfie over and over and over again I just couldn’t get it out of my head. Writers- please stop it. Nobody takes selfies all the time. Nobody uses a camera as old as the protagonist does. Nobody in california, where I live, uses the word «brah» unironically. Stop sterotyping your characters. Not everybody is a) a cheerleader/athlete b) a jock c) a geek d) a skater. That’s just not how cultural dynamics are anymore, and also saying that bullies are a serious issue is a cliche too. I feel like, when I am playing the game, I am playing an anime or the sims. I really wish that the less serious moments weren’t just guided by these cliches.
The graphics are decent. The optimization could be improved, though (I could run this game max settings at about x2 MSAA at
45 FPS, but on Battlefield 3 I get a full 60 on ultra. ) The game does not look anywhere as good as BF3, of course. Still, if you have a nice machine this should be no problem. Everything looks strikingly like the sims, I have to say. That can be a good or a bad thing.
Who cares about this review anyways. You should start with the first episode, hopefully this review just tells you to go out and get this one too, and the rest of the series! Full price is absolutely worth it. You can pirate the first episode first too as a demo, too, if that’s your cup of tea. But these devs do deserve your money.
And before I go, one last thing. I think it was really cool that the devs put in elements that not necessarily every player was going to see. That sort of thing is dying out, but these guys really went the extra mile. I’ll say it’s something similar to how GTA has it’s electric cars switch from gas to electric depending on your speed- it builds immersion but almost nobody’ll know that. That attention to detail is just amazing. … Expand

While there are many excellent story-driven titles in the Switch eShop, the tendency is more usually on grand tales or bold accomplishments While there are many excellent story-driven titles in the Switch eShop, the tendency is more usually on grand tales or bold accomplishments than fleshed out characters that feel authentic. True Colors still has a compelling story to tell but what struck me most about it was a weird feeling of authenticity to the key characters. Just something in the way they interact feels far less stiff and simplistic than the norm, and often the choices I’d have for responses to situations would feel sensible within the context of the current circumstances and characters. Certainly the discovery and exploration around your character’s powers and then the process of trying to resolve the game’s central mystery in this humble Colorado town are compelling, but without the depth of the characters being there I don’t think the whole package would work as well. I’ve seen plenty of people bemoaning how the game’s gorgeous visuals have had to be compromised on the Switch, and I suppose since this is a full-priced game if you have the option of playing it on another platform (and you don’t mind the lack of the convenience of portability) that would be a reasonable choice. That said, it’s still visually striking and the character models generally look great, so take those complaints with a grain of salt.

Too many similarities with that movie.
Also i didn’t like much the fact that there is no real reaction when she discovers her «ability».
«Hey i can bend time! It’s so normal!»
Even Hiro of tv series «Heroes» had a better reaction to that!

Plus, devs decision to make main character introvert geek girl again(!) looks like a hope to trigger LiS 1 fans and nothing more than that. Alex is the quite shallow character, she has no charisma of her own, I personally feel no empathy to her which makes it difficult for me to involve myself into the local drama.

This game beats every other Life is Strange game for me. I cried. I felt extremely happy. I felt angered. I felt shocked. I felt scared. I felt everything the game wanted me to feel thanks to its absolutely amazing art style and soundtrack. I had the exact same amount of empathy that Alex had. I didn’t have a perfect ending. I didn’t make all of the best choices. But I ended off with a smile and tears in my eyes. I’m not that great at tastes, so, if you don’t like story-driven games or games that relate to this generation of players, and if you don’t like the talk of real-world problems, and if you don’t support anything that the world still needs to catch up on (LGBTQ+ support, Taiwan), this game isn’t for you. That’s why I believe there are so many negative reviews on this game. Most of it is review bombing from Chinese players angry about the game’s acknowledgment of Taiwan as a country. The other negative reviews have mentioned and complained about «far-left ideology», which isn’t even somewhat true. There’s nothing that is far-left here. You live in Colorado, you can choose a gay relationship if you wish, and there’s a transgender character mentioned in the story. If you see this part of the review, you’ll have more neutral viewpoints in the mixed reviews, so if you don’t want any blind love on the positive side and blind hate on the negative side, you should invest time on the mixed reviews. But still, if you don’t like what the game includes in its story, then don’t buy it. No point in wasting money you know you won’t buy, right? But if you enjoyed Life is Strange, you’ll love this game too. I hope you do.
Being on the Xbox One, the game doesn’t run at a perfect FPS and has numerous lighting glitches and long loading screens, but it just didn’t break the unbreakable emersion for me. If the game didn’t have these issues, I would’ve given it a perfect 10. … Expand

Life is Strange, pois fará muita diferença.
… Expand

TL;DR at the bottom for those with little time to spare 🙂
An absolute tour de force. Life is Strange certainly isn’t a game for everyone. Those who dislike the ‘Telltale’ format probably won’t get much of a kick out of this. However, for those who do (or even some who don’t) this game is an emotional blast. The characters are fun and likeable (although some of them do drag at times) TL;DR at the bottom for those with little time to spare 🙂

Life is Strange is an episodic, story-driven game that largely flew under my radar for years. After playing through the game multiple times now, I wish I had known about this game sooner as it’s become one of my favourite games of the 2010s.

… Expand

Pros:
-Graphics are awesome, fits the game really well.
-Music is good as well.
-The world overall is better than it was in the first game.
So. Why is the story weak? For multiple reasons. First of all, its forced on us, and the first major decision made it very obvious that all the choice in this game are going to be illusions of choice.
Examples:
-Dad gets shot no matter what you choose.
-There is no option to stay or run away, its forced on us to run away.
-Our character gets kidnapped no matter what we choose. There we don’t even have a choice to explain properly that we didn’t stole anything, the only choice we have is to try to go away as soon as possible which makes our character look bad.
There is one thing in common with these choices: Racism. Racism thats also forced into the story and makes it much worse than it would’ve been originally. Its like rewriting the first Life is Strange where everyone around Max and Chloe are sexist and we have to listen to sexist remarks through 5 episodes.
The dad gets shot because the cop is a scared racist, the kids got bullied on multiple occasion in the episode because everyone apparently are racist in this story, Sean gets kidnapped because the old man is a racist.
So, there comes the second and the third con together. Our character is not the main character of the story (which already made it worse), its Daniel. Daniel, who also got the special ability. A special abiltiy that the player can’t control like we did it with Max, which made awesome puzzles for the game possible. Our character is just a side character who is there to help Daniel get through his story. We can only control Daniel’s power through cutscenes where our side character make the main character calm down.
The first game brought up these things: Corruption, drog abuse, psycho teacher, friendship, time travel, choices that were meaningful enough to save a person’s life in the story.
The second game bring up this thing: Racism. That’s it. All the things thats happening to our side character is because of racism. The bully kid was racist, that’s why we knocked him out, the cop was racist thats why he was afraid of two mexican kids and that’s why he shot the father for no good reason. We had to run away because all the other cops who arrived are assumably racist as well and we would’ve been accused of killing the cop (which is not wrong by the way, just not the way they think). The old man at the gas station is racist thats why we get tied up even if we don’t steal anything,
They just proved with this game that not continuing the story of Max and Chloe was a mistake. Majority of the people cared about them and we don’t care about Daniel and Sean, and no, its not going to change if the first episode couldn’t change our mind, because most of us are most likely not even going to buy the second episode. This game should be cancelled and make a game about the story of Max and Chloe as i said above. … Expand

I must say that part of the plot twist linked to the motivation for which the storm would broke out was predictable, at least for me, or for those who know sci-fi and saw movies like Donnie Darko. So it was not difficult to realize that Chloe being alive, was the origin which – with an exaggerated butterfly effect – would have unleashed the strange events and tornado that would have destroyed Arcadia Bay. I had guessed that, probably, Max would have to go back in time until the moment where it all began. It is called «polarized», that situation or system that presents two points with identical principles, but different values, such as the north pole or the south pole, or two different opinions. And it is exactly the same principle that applies to the last choice, the only choice that really matters in Life is Strange, between two options. Everything is reduced to that polarization, directing the story towards its end. As things were supposed to be, actually. Letting Chloe die was the only right thing to do to really put things right once and for all. To let her live was not in the «plans» from the beginning, so «Sacrifice Arcadia Bay» was wrong. Damn, I even did a coin toss – yes I really did – to see what would happen. And yet «Sacrifice Chloe» was the answer. Just when I liked her: she knew that it was right that way, that things had to be put in order again. For the first time, only at the end of the story, I saw the Chloe I like: mature, grown up, selfless. And this made things only more difficult. The next scene. well, was terribly intense. The price to pay to restore the order of things. It has been the most incredible week in their life, and only one of them will be able to bring these memories. for the other one it will be – and indeed it is – as if nothing has ever happened. Nothing has ever happened, actually, at that point. She will die in that bathroom, with a gunshot in his belly, without knowing everything that has happened. that her best friend, who hasn’t seen for years, is there, a few meters away while dying and she cannot save her. Chloe and all their memories, will live only in Maxine’s memory, which will find her place in the «universe». Since time passes. «memories», this is all that remains. Maxine understood that there’s never been a real choice, not even with her ability to rewind time: the first choice she made, using her power, is what triggered the wrath of the universe and therefore, anyway, Chloe would have to die. But Chloe was right: the important thing is that those moments have been «real», she gained what she really wanted. «Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened» I guess. Maybe, in the end, she is the real «Everyday Heroe». And it’s sad how, in different occasions during the whole story arc, is clear how Chloe was repeatedly and unavoidably fated to die; this did nothing but to prove the truth, of which Chloe and Maxine were not yet aware. I considered also that by doing sacrificing her, all my game run has been theoretically useless, being that none of the events that I created playing, in the end, happened – and this is good for some «wrong» choices. In the end everything is as it should be.
In a world divided between those who say that «life is great» or that «life sucks», maybe saying that «life is strange» is the right balance, it’s simply the neutral truth, the way it is. Such is life. And nothing else matters in the end.
I think I understood now, what this game is; understood that the setting and the teen-themes were only a pretext, a background, to tell something much bigger. Well, it’s been a nice journey in friendship, in memories, in mysteries. In time. … Expand

This This game is truly underrated. Dontnod and Square Enix really did give Telltale a run for their money with this episodic adventure.
This episode is so much better than the first, and I adored the first. Your decisions seem to have a feeling that they have a greater impact more and more throughout this episode, I personally have started to favor and feel more attached to the characters as the this episode progresses.
The atmosphere of the game is great too; I do not feel that how the characters speak are ‘cliche’ as the characters take the stereotypes which you think you know and make them their own. It all works.
Yes, admitted the characters speech could look more realistic, but this is no reason not to enjoy the game, I barely noticed it, as the story and game is so immerse and gripping that you don’t notice.
All in all, this game is extremely good and this episode proves it. Very much worth the buy, you won’t regret it:) bring on episode three! … Expand

A 9 out of 10. Really great and interesting experience so far. I absolutely love everything it represents.
The soundtrack and sound design is also nice. Though, I do have some serious suggestions you might want to look into:
-Make Chloe progressively being less whiny and more sensible throughout the next episodes. To me David is actually a caring step-father. It is kind of weird though, he installed camera in the rooms. Maybe Chloe has a split personality. Maybe Chloe is Rachel herself? lol
-When Max sits down getting a monologue, make her think-talking a bit faster. Perhaps also add images vaguely sliding across the screen. After all, she’s a visual type.
-Make characters mention something you did good or bad in the previous day. (How’s Kate Marsh?)
-Episode 2 was a good balance between action and dialogue. Keep it up like that.
Other things I recommend doing:
-Tweak the animation of guitar playing to match the strumming pattern. I’ll pick up the guitar on next episode and see if you solved it.
-Display the «photo» option, even when it’s not the right angle. Max will say this out loud to make that clear to the player.
-I want to be able to play the guitar outside the room. I want to see people reacting to Max’s guitar playing.

1) The game revolves around the plot instead of the characters. In LiS1, it doesn’t matter what is happening, since Max and Chloe are so beloved you can cut them out of any plot and paste them into another plot and the game would still be great. In LiS2, the plot IS the game, the two brothers are running for the Mexican border and the entire game revolves around this plot. If you cut out the two brothers and pasted two other generic characters, the game would be no different. That’s why it’s so bad.
2) The characters are awful. Instead of Chloe as a sidekick, you get an annoying 9 year old who you have to LITERALLY BABYSIT as you escort him throughout the game. Instead of playing as Max with time traveling abilities, you play as a boring generic high school kid with no powers and who makes the most juvenile irresponsible decisions (to further the plot) that you have no control over.
3) The plot is awful. Two Mexican Americans running for the Mexican border (because that’s a good idea right?) and experiencing racist America along the way. Just garbage and completely lacking in depth, thought, or intelligence. Every character is a 2 dimensional stereotype. In LiS1 characters had depth, their actions weren’t black/white they were grey, there was reasoning behind their motives and you had empathy for them, whether it’s the controlling step dad or the drug dealer. In LiS2, characters are either 1) Racist or 2) Victims of racism. There’s no middleground, every character is either good or evil, and once again all of this is done to further the plot. … Full Review »

-Why did Max get the powers? She got her first vision warning her about the storm, which only occurred because she got time travel powers? Not saving Chloe stopped the tornado. Why? Other things still changed. There is not way Max behaves and says EXACTLY the same things in the timeline where Chloe dies. Everything would be different and the time travel still resulted in a «new» timeline compared to Max being a normal student.
-If you save Chloe, does every man, woman and child in the town die? This would have been a perfect place to show the people you befriended survive. Max’s parents are still alive. so do Chloe and Max just drive to Seattle and live with them now? Did Max text them to let them know she’s ok? Moreover, the goal of the game has always been to revolutionize the impact of choices which is something you could have already experienced by playing episodes 1-2. I have to say that the individual episodes are doing an amazing job at what they are supposed to (bringing to us a realistic story that we are capable of experiencing on our own and change the future by our choices) and I gave a 9 to both Episodes 1 and 2.
Keeping that in mind, I have to say that Chaos Theory is nevertheless the best episode so far.
It is really hard to describe any episode of this series without giving away any spoilers, but:
— Supposing you have seen the sneak peak at the end of Ep 2, you should already know that a large part of this episode takes part at night. Because of that, a nice feeling of tension is added to the story, as you have to walk around in the darkness using only the light of your mobile phone. It is quite reminiscent of some horror games and a welcome addition overall.
— Also, it feels more like an adventure game, as there are more parts this time around where you have to gather items. There is more interaction with people and the surroundings this time around.
— The ending part is simply amazing and a great idea overall.
I love the direction this series is going and I no longer have doubts that this series will be long remembered as the first one that tried to attempt something slightly different and managed to do it in such a great way. … Expand

The weakest game in the entire series. The story is superficial, too short and predictable. In addition, there are not many «breakthrough» dialogues and choices in the game, so the player does not influence the course of the story too much, as he did in previous games. If it’s not possible to achieve this lock with Ray Tracing, then a non-RT option should made available at a 60 fps. Unfortuantely, the Series X version is locked to 30 fps, which is absolutely bizarre, and it can’t even hold that in open areas.
The developer claims a 30 fps lock was intentional for a «cinematic experience», but I call BS on this. The PC version runs at 60 fps or higher with less powerful hardware. One person was getting up to 100fps with a GTX 1080 Ti, which is inferior compared to what the Series X is running. If the «Cinematic experience» was so integral to the aesthetics of the gameplay, then why wasn’t the PC locked to 30 fps as well?
Frankly, this is just a terribly optimized game and there’s no valid reason why this shouldn’t run at 60 fps at high graphical fidelity when all but a handful of Series S|X games are hitting 1440p or 2160p at 60 fps since the console’s launch.
Nobody should buy Life is Strange: True Colors on Series X until the developer fixes this. When you pay full price for a game, you expect it to run well and this game doesn’t, regardless of its narrative or gameplay qualities. It’s inexcusable.

Life Is Strange takes notes from Telltales playbook and use’s them properly while still coming out with something still worth while to play Life Is Strange takes notes from Telltales playbook and use’s them properly while still coming out with something still worth while to play through. Everything from it’s art style, story and gameplay blends together perfectly well leaving you wanting more by the time the episode ends.
Life Is Strange fellows Max Caulfield, a photographer who learns that she has the ability to reverse time by simply raising her hand after witnessing someone being killed in front of her. I would go on about the story but it’s far to nice for me to ruin it for you so i’ll leave it to that.
I hate talking about graphics in a game, specially in this generation of games, but I have to talk about how nice the game really looks. The art style of Life Is Strange is water painting style, flushed with rich color that makes everything look so good. There were times I wished I purchase the game on Steam so I could get see just how nice the game can look. You shows they truly put allot of love into the art style of the game and with each character as well, giving each and every person there own personality.
Gameplay wise the game plays similar to many Telltale Games. You can move freely in the area’s your in and read/look at everything the world has to offer. Being able to go from one area to another makes the game feel more open then it is which is a nice touch. Interacting with characters is pretty much the same as most Telltale Games, i’ll be pointing out allot of stuff about Telltale games through out this review with a reason at the end so bare with me. With a open option of dialogue to select from it feels normal but mixed with the ability to reverse time you are given the ability to change things you say or interact with people. It’s only briefly touched on n the first episode but mixing the ability to control time with conversations can completely change how things turn out like not knowing the answer to a question, learning it from someone else then reversing time to give them the correct answer. It’s simple in the first episode and briefly touched on but it’s great. The only part about the time ability was that at some talking sections of the game you are unable to reverse time at all. It was a little odd to see this come up more then I thought would happen but in some cases it made sense, but the time ability isn’t just for conversations either.
Time reversal can be used for three things, speech, puzzles, choices. With the speech section already explained the puzzle’s are what will keep the game interesting depending on how far they go with them in future episodes since yet again there are not many with in the first episode and the ones that are there are not that hard to figure out. The puzzles they shown with in the first episode were basic stuff, most of the puzzles only take about two to three steps to finish which is a shame since it looks as if they could have done more with in the episode.
The last is choice and it’s the most simple of the three. In all Telltale Games they leave the players a big choice here and there with in a episode and depending on what choice you make can effect the story down the road. It is pretty much the same thing here except instead of sticking with your choice you can see what just happens in each choice before picking the one you wish to go with. It is nice to see what could happen but in a way it sort of gives away the surprise a little for future plays.
The only real downfall for me with this Episode was the fact that it was not as long as I thought it would be. With the so many things to find, read and interact with it’s still playable around two hours which isn’t bad but it really does leave you wanting more in a single play through.
At this point you can pretty much tell I’ve been comparing this game more to Telltale Games then anything else and let’s be honest here, there really aren’t that many developers out there that make these sorts of games until now. Other developers like Capcom with there upcoming Resident Evil Revelation 2 and Access Games with D4 are starting to try out new idea’s for episodic games which is great if done correctly. As for now tho, Life Is Strange is heading in the right direction with it’s amazing art style, story and gameplay. The only thing that held this game back from a higher score was the length of the episode it’s self.
With that said I will happily give this game a 9/10.
Pro:
-Amazing art style
-Interesting Story
-Well Used Time Abilities
Cons:

Joey comes back in after Flores leaves and talks to Sean a bit more and tells Sean how to take care of his (removed) eye. After they talk, he leaves a towel on a table for Sean. Sean finds his sketch book in the towel and a note left by Jacob, a friend of Sean’s that was one of the workers at the drug farm. Jacob took care of Daniel while Sean was in the hospital and says Daniel is at Haven Point, Nevada, so Sean decides to sneak out of the hospital at night. Sean manages to sneak out of the hospital, hotwire a car and escape.
Sean then drives to Haven Point and after he drives for a while, he stops at the side of the road so he can sleep. Sean, however, is woken up to a man and a younger man knocking on the car. They tell Sean that he’s on their properly but the older man doesn’t take kindly to Sean and is racist towards him. While I get what the developers are trying to show in this little piece of episode 4 and agree that the racism Sean was recieveing was not right, the moment fell a bit flat for me. Nothing else happens as a result of this encounter in the rest of the episode which makes it feel like it’s not really needed in the game much in the first place. Sean drives away from the racist man and the nicer (when compared to the older man) younger man. He arrives at Haven Point, Nevada and finds Daniel is being worshiped by a cult. The reverend of the church, Lisbeth, has been taking care of Daniel for the past few months after Jacob brought Daniel there to be taken care of.
Sean finds out that Daniel is being manipulated and brainwashed by Lisbeth for her own personal beliefs and gains; he tries to reason with Daniel and get him to come with him to Puerto Lobos but Daniel pushes Sean back with his powers and refuses to go with Sean.
Sean is kicked out of the church and locked out and told that if he returns, a gun will be used on him for ‘trespassing’. This part of the episode was executed well. You can feel the tension between Sean and the cult; the cult twist is a really interesting and unusual piece that works well in the story. After Sean is kicked out of the church, Karen, Sean and Daniel’s mother who abandoned them a few years ago, meets Sean for the first time in a few years. Karen and Sean go to a hotel room to make a plan to get Daniel back and organise to meet Jacob to talk the next day The dialogue between Sean and his mother, Karen felt kind of relatable and completely understandable to me. The voice actor for Karen seemed like they fit well with the character they were playing.
Sean, Karen and Jacob make a plan and go to the church to get Daniel and Jacob’s sick sister back. Sean and Jacob break into Lisbeth’s files and find files that contain info on lots of different people. They find out various pieces of info while in Lisbeth’s place and go to get Daniel back. Daniel doesn’t want to leave as he thinks the church is his ‘home’ and after a lot of talking and convincing, Sean and Karen convince Daniel to come with them. Sean is beat up by one of Lisbeth’s men and threatened with a gun but Daniel fights back and Sean, Karen, Daniel, Jacob and his sister get out. During the fight, a candle starts a fire and the church burns down.
Episode 4 didn’t have much of Daniel’s powers being used except when Daniel pushed Sean, Lisbeth and the man that was following Lisbeth’s orders to beat Sean up; with his powers and to open the door out of the church that Lisbeth tried to lock in an attempt to have Sean, Karen and Daniel burn and die with her inside the burning church. Episode 4 didn’t feel as exciting as episode 3 did. It felt like a downgrade if anything.
The ending of Episode 4 had no cliffhanger whatsoever which really does ruin the episode a bit. Usually, every episode something would happen at the end that would make you want to watch more of the series; I can’t say the same for episode 4. I’d rate it a 7/10. It was good in some bits but not all. … Expand

There’s no excuse a game like Miles Morales can play at Dynamic 4K + Ray Tracing + 60 Fps + No loading AT ALL on PS5. Deck Nine, you missed the mark completely with this one and it’s unacceptable. The reverse time game play is cool not just because you can change your answers but also because some times you don’t know which one is right. You answer X, rewind, answer Y, and the reaction doesn’t seem to be much of a difference.
The graphic style also works amazingly well! Some games spout «Realistic!» and this game doesn’t need that.
If you want to give it a shot, the demo works great and if you decide to buy it restarts right then and there where you left it off so no need to replay through! Although you might want to so you can see what the differences are in choices! … Expand
Gameplay isn’t particularly special, there’s just some of it, but it’s indeed this way these «modern graphic adventures/interactive movies» want to be. However, it’s interesting the ability to rewind time and that the protagonist is aware of this mechanics to see what happens, acquire information, then rewind and change a situation that could have ended in an other way. It’s a bit like knowing a reaction from a character, making a mistake or an unsatisfactory choice and reloading the game. except that in Life is Strange don’t need reloading the game, just rewinding time. A nice find.
Very beautiful music, but technically the game is nothing more than acceptable, it’s true that it has its own graphic style, and it’s nice, but considering is moved by a technological prodigy like Unreal Engine, I expected more. And on PS4 – to make a comparison with PS3 – the situation doesn’t seem to improve much, except for some better-defined textures and smoother shadows.
I’m quite convinced that 10, 15 or 20 years ago, such a game would have provoked less immersion for players around the world. In a sense, the network, the Internet of our modern times, has unified what is the collective imaginary of at least two generations, amalgamating it, making some elements common also to people often very distant from each other, in different countries or different continents, of different cultures. It is no coincidence that the game designers are Europeans, who have built a mainly American reality. I am very critical of both my generation («Millennials») and even more of the one came after («Digital natives») – which in my part of the world are often defined as «an electrocuted generation». Therefore, knowing very well both generations, I am very critical also in their reconstructions, in the way they are represented and I have to say it: Life is Strange succeeds. It’s not just an amalgamation of stereotypes – that wrongly or rightly, they exist – but an efficient picture of a reality, which is now distant to me and which I have never lived in that very way, personally, but certainly that has been painted with good methodology. Dontnod, knowing that they had to raise interest already with a pilot episode which then would became a series – like a TV series – succeeded to build very well the reality of Arcadia Bay, the protagonist, Maxine Caulfield, and all the other elements that revolve around this first episode. The setting, the events and the personal stories are intriguing, the episode invites to discover more, to go to the bottom of the story. Then I really appreciated the many references to the cinema – which, paradoxically, the younger ones will hardly understand.
There’s something big moving at Arcadia Bay, this first episode manages to make it clear, yet to reveal very little. It’s a very good start and I can not wait to know what’s going on. … Expand

The power, like I said, was amazing; but it didn’t offer much in the way of gameplay. The scenes were dragged on too slow to stretch the playtime while keeping the story too on-rails for a «choices matter» game, then ending in a flat, disappointing conclusion.

And given that the game can easily be completed in 2-3 sittings and almost the entire game takes place within a one-block radius, I encourage you to to wait until this game is cheaper before buying it (I admit to feeling personally gypped after paying full price for this).
Life is Strange games are as story-focused as video games can be, but this game’s lack of a satisfying story is borderline tragic given the bar set by the previous games. I could literally tell you the entire story in a single sentence. I unfortunately saw the main plot twist coming from miles away and was not at all surprised, which makes me long for the days when the first Life is Strange masterfully fooled me until the very end and left me visibly shell-shocked at its conclusion. And the main revelation that Alex ultimately uncovers is rather underwhelming given that it’s the basis for the game’s entire mystery, and it’s also a little contrived and not entirely believable on a practical level (really, no one else in this small town knew about this? + a bunch more obvious questions that I won’t raise here due to spoilers). Compound this with the fact that the game is extremely short and, while pure length is not everything, many of these hours are not even very meaningful. For example, one chapter is almost entirely comprised of doing a live-action role play with a young boy, and while I love the idea of a LARP as much as the next person, in execution it felt akin to taking a mostly unenthusiastic boy trick-or-treating for an entire chapter. The LARP did not move the story forward even one inch, nor was it very emotionally impactful. There are only five chapters, and this is the entirety of one of them. Compare this to the prior two games, where each chapter packed the punch of a full-length movie and took you on such a plot-advancing journey that the game would have to provide a full-blown recap at the start of each chapter just to remind you of the sheer amount of things that happened in the last one. Add to this the fact that True Colors takes place almost entirely within a single neighborhood block and you just really don’t feel like you’re going on much of a journey at all, literally or figuratively. When True Colors ended my honest thought was, «. That’s it?» It’s an interesting story that’s worth experiencing, but it’s just a very brief and not very satisfying one.
To be fair, while the overall story is very brief and underwhelming, the emotional core rightfully lies in the characters themselves, and in that regard the game has plenty of heart. Alex is a fantastic character fully realized by a great actor, and the game admirably explores mental health, grief, anxiety, anger, and other deep questions. An easy-to-please person may find these attempts sufficient. It’s just that these attempts are nowhere near as emotionally impactful as the first two games simply because the game does not provide a very meaningful journey from which to thrive. There are some exceptions; a segment exploring Alex’s childhood was mostly well done (even if it came far too late in the story to matter), and her final confrontation with the main antagonist was masterful. Ryan and Steph are fantastic, helped by great actors and dialogue and graphics that are lightyears ahead of the prior games. None of these make up for the shortcomings above though, and the result is a game that is interesting, with plenty of heart, and is overall worth experiencing (at a lower price!), but is hugely disappointing by Life is Strange standards. … Expand

Pros:
* Upgraded graphics.
* Awesome world building with lots of attention to detail.
* Good soundtrack.
Cons:
* One giant escort quest.
* Unlikable characters.
* No super powers like time traveling.
* Huge drops in framerate on every cutscene.
Life Is Strange 2 is a game where you have no abilities and your entire mission is to escort a telekenetic 9 year old across the country. Game mechanics include holding LT to look for the 9 year old, and pressing B to call to him so he doesn’t get lost. That’s about it.
Of course, graphic adventure games aren’t about the gameplay, they’re moreso about the storytelling. And that’s where Life Is Strange 2 fails miserably. The characters are downright unlikable. The older brother in the game makes the most irresponsible decision he possibly can by running from the police and trying to cross the border to Mexico. What’s the point of the other «choose your own adventure» options if you can’t even choose to not go down this route? It’s like if Max and Chloe had decided to destroy Arcadia Bay from the beginning before the game even started. What does it matter if you choose to steal a candy bar or not, if you have no choice in making the worst decision of the character’s life?
Unfortunately the entire game is built upon this failed story plot. Since the older brother is running to Mexico, the game is one giant escort quest. Since it’s an escort quest, there are mechanics built around escorting the younger brother. And since you are the supporting character, you have no special abilities, instead it’s the younger brother with the super powers that you can’t make use of. The rest of the game cannot make up for the shortcomings.

What made LIS good is its world, possibilities of talking to so many characters, and getting to have that sense of belonging and finding your niche even in a school with mean girls and bullies.
LIS2 has none of that. There is no sense of belonging, things are GRIM, and there’s little mystery, and I mean who plays a game where they HIDE, worry, steal, experience nightmares and get beaten up by a strange guy. Is that what you call FUN?
Or is that a GAME I’m supposed to buy and enjoy? And I’m bad person if I don’t? How’s that?
— Game’s atmosphere is downright MISERABLE.
— You spend your time babysitting your younger brother (again, such fun!)
— You’re on the run and you’re stealing food or dumpster diving or talking to people who treat you with contempt. Again, this is totally why I buy video games, I’m a masochist.
— There’s no sense of mystery or escape or world building like in LIS. Game has no LIS soul. It has no soul whatsoever actually!
— World in LIS2 is a hiking trail, the woods, and some bully’s cabin. Wait, what worldbuiling are we talking about?
— Politically charged narrative. Whether you’re left-wing, right-wing, centrist, are you really buying games to spend your precious free time in ugly and miserable worlds where you’re on the run and being treated like a criminal by ugly people in the middle of nowhere? Wait, so I’m buying a game for THAT? Why not just go on Twitter?
— Feels are indeed forced. When you’re scared or on the run or thinking about stealing, it’s very hard to connect to positive emotions of nostalgia, warmth or serenity. When you’re scared and miserable and dumpster diving, there’s THAT and nothing else. You can’t have your cake and eat it, too.
And FYI, I felt exactly the same thing when playing Detroit: Become Human so this is not tied to politics and being a good or a bad person or who you’re voting or not voting for.
Playing as Kara, ALL you do is take care of Alice, avoid miserable situations, hide from people who want to hurt you, and see the very worst of human kind.
Fair but I’m not playing my games to be depressed, oppressed, afraid, or ruminate about things I can’t control. That’s not fun and that’s not the world I want to be in. … Expand
… Expand

Exploring the forest and a couple of other locations and taking care of your brother is not my idea of LIS game. If I wanted to raise a child I’d play «Princess Maker». The plot leaves a lot to be desired and makes me raise my eyebrows at how unrealistic some character behavior is, I can’t relate to such characters. That whole idea of being on the run isn’t exciting at all. The story isn’t working for me. The game feels boring and fails to make me feel emotional and connected.
Some positive notes: the soundtrack is awesome as always in this franchise, the voice acting is very good as well.
I bought only the first episode. Will I come back for more? I don’t think so. It didn’t even have a cliffhanger! I can’t believe that even «Before the Storm» made by a different studio was so much better than this.
… Expand

I was expecting a similar, great game, but instead of I got this propaganda piece. Sure, there was some political messaging in the first game, but it was not as bad nor did it bother me that much. It was handled adequately.
This really makes me sad. They even implement post-modernist phrases in the game, such as «everything is political. These are the kind of things you learn from your Neo-Marxist professors. Now, I can understand that you have some political issues tackled in a game. Even post-modernist thought has it time and place. I could also say that racism is a good subject to tackle. Having a Mexican family as a center-stage is also a great idea. However, when there is no nuance or subtlety in your presentation, it feels forced. In this game, it is forced to the extreme.
Everything is not and does not have to be political. The authors of this propaganda should really look themselves in the mirror and ask, «I am really so much better than everyone else». I bet majority of developers of this game were white, and probably white men. Most came from middle-class or higher background. Unfortunately, they have been taught to loathe themselves because of their skin color and perceived privileged. This group-based identity is over-riding their ability to treat people as individuals. I have to say that I am not American, but I am getting really sick and tired of regressive leftist politics pushed by entertainment industry and media there. Americans, including most white leftists, used to be proud of their country and heritage and now they see themselves as oppressors. The dialogue consists of Disney Channel original movie teens mixed with dead memes from 2010 and throwaway slasher movie fodder. The only exception is when the para-protagonist Daniel is whining or causing literally every conflict in this season. Daniel makes this already lackluster and boring experience so much worse by ruining everything and then blaming it on the protagonist Sean while he receives no repercussion. The writers have never met a 9-10 year-old in their lives judging from how he acts. Daniel is written like a five-year-old who throws temper-tantrums every episode and never experiences any true character growth or remorse. Despite having telekinesis, he never uses it when it’s important or relates to saving or helping Sean regardless of the choices you go with. His power is only used in the climax of each episode or to cause conflict. Sean is a rather boring protagonist, however he at least shows some basic character-depth and progression over the course of the 4 current episodes. Daniel on the other hand starts out as a whiny, entitled brat and progresses to be an edgy, whiny, entitled brat. All the side characters are one-note and, due to the nature of this type of story, only appear for about half an episode each.
The writers decided to strongly push politics in this game, which is perfectly fine, however it is done in the least subtle, respectful, or thought provoking way. It’s done as blatant and lazy propaganda. Regardless of your political stance, whether hardcore liberal or extreme conservative, you will hate how they propagate their message. It is extremely forced and contrived. For example, in episode 4 Sean, the protagonist, pulls over to sleep after a long drive across states. Suddenly a redneck named Chad (I’m not even joking, his name’s actually Chad) starts harassing him and humiliating him while being a racist redneck, and then leaves the story. There was no build-up to this character, no reason he would be there, and no reason he would harass this random teenager. This scene is entirely arbitrary and only exists to force out its political message. A scene like this occurs at least once every episode so far and every one of these scenes are just as forced and come in at random. In fact, nearly all of the antagonists are racist. Which would be fine if they would at least take the time to develop the characters beyond just being racist. All of the antagonists are the same character; the writers just hit control+c and then control+v. If the writers wanted to write a story addressing underlying racism in America then they should have learned about subtlety and nuance. Their politics aren’t the issue; it’s the fact that they wrote all the characters and the plot in an hour without any substance or depth.
The gameplay feels like a less involved Tell-Tale game (heck, even the cringey «Minecraft Story Mode» had more gameplay and better decisions to be completely honest.) All you do is walk around an area, pick things up, and then have poor character interactions. LiS 1 at least had puzzles and Max had rewind powers and moral dilemmas over the choices presented. Before the Storm had likable characters despite their poor decision making and lack of super-power. Even Adventures of Captain Spirit had an interesting setting and environment. In LiS 2 the biggest dilemma is trying to find the plot because most of the episodes lack one. Even if all your choices were irrelevant in LiS 1, they at least felt important at the time, and while the dialogue wasn’t the best it at least lead to good character interactions. Here all decisions have barely any consequence. Even the ones that do still feel empty since you are jumping months between episodes and barely see the impact of your decisions on other characters aside from a letter you get in episode 4 that only serves to remind you these off-screen characters even exist. This game has no real game play and the dialogue options lack importance.
This story could have been done well if the writers took the time to flesh out the characters and the world they live in. This game could have been good if it didn’t rely entirely on stereotypical characters. The political message could have been decent if the writers did it subtly and tactfully. If the game didn’t play every «let’s cheaply appeal to the general audience» card literally every episode (between introducing a dog that dies after 5 minutes of screen time for dramatic effect and the random racist people that only exist to be evil) and had decent characters this game might have at least been mildly enjoyable. … Expand

The characters themselves are another strong part, especially Steph and Ryan. The game feels very short though, I wanted to spend more time with them. The main story is kind of uneventful and short, but the characters definitely carry this game.
I also want to praise the game for its rich options in the Accessibility menu, especially the option for having more reaction time for the time-based decisions. The most frustrating thing about these games is having a too little time for reacting, not being able to fully read and understand the options, then the timer runs out and the game automatically picks an option for me. Screw that, the whole point of these games is making the decisions yourself. And this is a franchise with supernatural abilities, so don’t tell me it is actually «realistic» that in certain scenarios you should have a limited reaction time.

The game is shorter than its predecessors, and as murder mysteries go, the plot is lacking a bit. Also gameplaywise it does not improve at all from the previous games and can be boring at times when looking for everything that world has to offer.
But apart from those few negative points, I think that this game offers a really special experience. The soundtrack is just beautiful and varied, portraying perfectly the setting and mood of every scene. It was really the core of the most emotional scenes in the game, along with the fantastic performances for each and every character, specially from Erika Mori as the protagonist Alex. What I didn’t expect would make such a huge difference is the improvement to the facial expressions. The characters and the interactions between them feel so real and it’s possible to actually tell exactly how they’re feeling without even listening to the dialogue. Regarding the characters themselves, this is as great as expected from a Life is Strange game. Alex is such a sympathetic, fun and relatable protagonist to play as, and the game allows us to really explore the lives of the other characters and feel for them as they accompany Alex throughout this journey.
All of this adds up to create this beautiful and heart touching experience that I’m sure won’t get out of my head anytime soon and that I strongly recommend for every LiS fan out there. … Expand

It’s funny that they managed to make me more invested in their stories than the protagonists’. At this point i would rather continue watching their story, but of course in the end they decided to take them all away just after 1 episode.
The only reason why giving this episode a 3 is that Daniel wasn’t in the spotlight most of the time, which just shows what a bad job they did with the writing during the 2 episodes. Most people doesn’t care about the story we got, so we are more interested in side character stories.
The choices are still just illusions, we can’t really affect anything major in the story. Just a reminder: This is the sequel of the game that had Kate Marsh in it. Everyone who played LiS 1 knows what i mean.
The story is still going nowhere, which is just annoying. LiS 1 was full of interesting storylines. Kate Marsh, Chloe Price, Rachel Amber, Victoria, Nathen, Jefferson, David and more. LiS 2 has nothing. We have 2 kids who want to go to Mexico. great, but they are not progressing at all and everything that happens to them is completely irrelevant because at the end of every episode, they lose everything over and over again.
Such a shame. I still stand by my opinion. We needed the sequel of Chloe’s and Max’s story, not this story filled with nothing. … Expand

Ok this game is good, no worries on that. But the story itself reminds me of something already seen. Donnie Darko to be straight.
Too many similarities with that movie.
Also i didn’t like much the fact that there is no real reaction when she discovers her «ability».
«Hey i can bend time! It’s so normal!»
Even Hiro of tv series «Heroes» had a better reaction to that!
Pretty intresting setting, and a clever setup.
I really like the time travel idea, and it’s used in good ways.
The story really got me hooked, and I’m certainly gonna buy the next episodes.
Overall good voice acting and pleasant soundtrack.
One flaw: the animations and graphics aren’t that great.
Still a fun and intresting game that I recommend playing
This could be a prelude to the next GOTY, however Life is Strange is a big way down to the hipster hole that communities like Tumblr live in. For almost the entire episode you have a big problem to find good characters. Almost all of the characters are nothing less that a big cliche of everyone is sick of it. A gym guy who keep bullying the fat nerd guy, who likes to stalk the girl who achieve to be a magazine model, who is the arch enemy of the rich girl, who also don’t like the protagonist, Max. Max is a poor mid class girl who doesn’t have many friends, but is always talking to everyone. Max likes vintage cameras, but is always getting jealous of Victoria, a rich girl whom has the best digital cameras. Max says that she is not a hipster all the time during the game, but she is always acting like one.
Another problem with the character making is that the personalities is very poor. It looks like everyone is the same, and again, everything is a big cliche. One girl has problems because she got pregnant. Another girl has problems because her nude pics leaked on facebook. And the other has a D step dad who likes to hit her on the face. You may think «But it’s good that games are minding those real day problems», and that would be really cool. But the problem is that Life is Strange is a game about living up with those problems. Like I said: A story for teenagers girls, because only them would be interested in a story that talks about how hard is to get a boyfriend that really know what you are felling.
So, why a 6? Even with all the bads sides, the game still has some good things. The option system is not the best, and very limited, but the way you can use the power to go back in time make it worth. You have some good power on your decision making, like checking the possibilities of each choice. Another thing that is cool is that you can make a change on the history, go back in time to avoid the consequence of that change and later on still use the knolowdge you got it. E.g: You check some files and leave a mark on them. After checking the files, you may go back in time to the point were the files does not have any mark, and keep going with the game while still holding the knowlodge you got on the files.
This may seem like «overpowered» or «ez game, ez life», but it actually follow up pretty well with the game story and real life. If you had the power to control time, wouldn’t you use it to your on advantage?
The game does not have the best animation, but all the scenario is like a watercolour paiting, and I think its pretty cool. The sound track is also really great, and you can see all fitting pretty well in each scene.
tl;dr PROS: Good watercolour painting like graphics; awesome soundtrack; good use of the power of rewind in time during the game.
CONS: It’s like a Twilight Saga game, where the focus is the generation Z teenagers problems; bad characters with poor personalities; poor choice system (is just A or B), and sometimes they lead to the same way; … Expand

Moreover it exposes issues we can all relate to in some way (I mean encountered, even if not directly in our families, maybe we’ve seen it in other circumstances), like domestic violence, alcohol abuse, bullying, high school drama etc. Maybe not for all even other darker topics which I will not mention to not spoil something. We might say: we were not bullies, but how many really were supportive with someone bullied or tried to stand for them, for example? That makes us part of the story too. I can say that I resonated very well with Max every time she faced a stressful situation, moreover I think that the voice actor for Max did a great job expressing the feelings (even though I have to say I hated some way too childish phrases which I will not spoil for you ^_^).

Storytelling, voice acting, animations are good as usual, that’s why I’m rating it a 6.

PS5 and Xbox Series X would have EASILY handle this game at 60 fps but Deck Nine excused their lazyness by telling us that they did that on purpose.
Also the game is filled with several seconds loading screen when you go from inside to outside, when once again the consoles would have been able to handle no loadings screen at all or very short time loadings.. There’s nothing immersive in a sluggish 30 fps with frequent 10-12 seconds loading screen. There’s no excuse a game like Miles Morales can play at Dynamic 4K + Ray Tracing + 60 Fps + No loading AT ALL on PS5. Deck Nine, you missed the mark completely with this one and it’s unacceptable. You didn’t took the time or the will to optimize your game, don’t you dare tell us it was on purpose. We’re not dumb. … Expand
The story is poorly written with cringeworthy dialogue. The running animations are also cringeworthy. The graphics are trash. Despite the trash graphics, the game still manages to have loading screens when entering/exiting interiors. That is very PS2-like. It’s already bad enough that this so-called PS5 game has garbage animations. To make matters worse, this game doesn’t even have an option to run this game at 60 fps. How can a bare-boned game with terrible graphics not run at 60 fps on a PS5 console? That is embarrassing. The in-game arcade games are more fun than the game itself.
For me, this was a solid return to form after the misfire that LiS 2 is. Alex as the new main protagonist is a real winner, as was the single location and consistent cast of characters.
I’d probably rate it an 8.5/10 or 9/10 but I’m bumping it up to a full 10 to combat all the stupid review bombing.
A game that I snagged on sale for half off and enjoyed, however this being a premium priced game, I would not neccesarily reccomend you check it out at full price. Powered by a great cast of characters and touching story, this choose your adventure style game kind of falls flat in other areas.

However, I really appreciated how the game captures the feeling of a small, country town with great success.

Everything goes wrong when Alex’s brother dies in an accident that could’ve been avoided. That’s when her superpower of feeling other’s emotions comes in handy, as she tried to uncover why he was killed.
GAMEPLAY, STORY, GRAPHICS
The gameplay is rather simple in True Colors and the main thing is to interact with other people and use your power. That’s also when all the most important decisions comes that’ll have long and unchangeable consequences and in the end of the game it all ravels into one. Everything you do and don’t do in Haven have consequences. For example, I didn’t interact with everyone and in the end I had to pay for that.
What makes the gameplay easier is the fact that this time the game are released as whole and not episodically in every three (or so) months. It was much easier to play and remember all the interactions and characters this time. That episodically released previous games was my biggest problem with the games, because it was so hard to remember all the decision I’ve made previously.
Story-wise the plot was good, even though I could tell many events beforehand. True Colors is very much re-playable, trying to get your best ending. I got my ending as I wanted for the first time around.
Graphically the game looks nice. It have much updated look compared to the other games of the saga.

… Expand

The developers stated they’d done this on purpose for «cinematic» reasons, but that’s a load of BS, they could have taken a leaf of of Ghost of Tsushima book and capped the cut scenes to 30 FPS. Considering this game can run at 60 FPS on PC it’s clearly a cover up for the fact this game is just a poor port to console. It has its bugs and the raytracing literally doesn’t work. Non-spoiler review here, from a perspective of a player who really enjoyed the first LiS, the prequel and was rooting for Deck Nine to succeed with assumed creative freedom. I’ll Non-spoiler review here, from a perspective of a player who really enjoyed the first LiS, the prequel and was rooting for Deck Nine to succeed with assumed creative freedom. My score for the game is average but describing the game as such would be unfair. The best way to summarize True Colors is a «could have been», which makes it ultimately worse than being average throughout.
I’ll start off with the positives: the game has the familiarity of a Life is Strange, even to a fault. The fonts, the walking pace, animations, thoughts and comments Alex makes about stuff around her (posters, flowers, gnomes), text messages, a journal: all that is here, if you were hoping for it. The soundtrack is good, and helps shape the overall atmosphere, even though it lacks the impact of the first game. I also enjoyed the humor and a choice for your character to be awkwardly sarcastic, which made (my) Alex Chen different from both Max and Chloe, while still sharing some of the same sensitive aspects of their personalities. The initial set-up for the game takes time and getting to know the people around town works, since you are arriving there for the first time as a blank slate. The anticipation, excitement and anxiety of a «new life in the unknown» is portrayed well through dialogue, text messages and even the town’s own «facebook group», which is probably the highlight of the game. Overall, the first 2-3 episodes of the game made me feel mostly excited about everything that. could be.
While the characters and voice acting are mostly great and uncanny valley is not a factor, the town itself is a mixed bag. First of all, Haven being a mining town, similar to Dontnod’s Twin Mirror’s Basswood, seems too much to be a coincidence. But despite this similarity, Basswood actually felt like a «backwoods little town» with an enjoyable and belieavable identity. True Colors’ Haven feels like a downtown Seattle street surrounded by fake mountains and a lake for a-hole tourists to kayak in. The main street has a collector’s vinyl store, a niche indie rock radio station, a weed store, an artisan ice cream boutique, a newly opening coffee shop (ugh) and some weird art and statues that don’t fit in the environment at all. Haven feels more like a 20 year-oldish hipster art student’s idea of a «cool mining town» and this made exploring more annoying than interesting, since you are reminded of this almost every other minute. All this is magnified by the fact that you don’t get to explore any other area in this game, with one small exception. The main street, a few shops, your room, and that’s it. I still can’t believe how small the game. The only cool area is the town’s bar, where all the main characters and miners seem to practically live, reinforcing the absurdity of having the aforementioned niche stores around when nobody would visit them anyway.
The story being told at first through the environments and interacting with all the new people is well executed and I felt immediately attached to a few characters, especially to Alex and her brother Gabe. I was genuinely moved by a few moments early and mid-game and couldn’t wait to see what happens next. The empathy «super power» mechanic is not inherently bad but the execution is very shallow. You just read someone’s mind for a single sentence and most of the time you already know what they are going to «think» anyway. This same mechanic was done in a 2014 game Murdered: Soul Suspect and here it is used almost exactly the same way, which is kinda weird honestly.
My biggest issue with this game, despite all the positives I mentioned, is that the initial promise on what is to come is never truly redeemed. The story seems logical when I think about it on paper and the twists were surprising, but the pacing and reveals of the final 2 episodes were so, so jarring, that they didn’t have the intended emotional impact despite me being invested in the story at first. Characters suddenly acted in an entirely different fashion, your choices were not addressed nor did they have meaning even on a dialogue level and all of this happens within a 20 minute period and then the game is done. The final choice was obvious to me but the game tried to force me to go the other way, which makes me think that the writers didn’t realize what they were portraying or rushed the game and didn’t have time to consider the big picture. I couldn’t wait to play LiS 1 again, making the opposite choices and see what happens yet I have no interest in replaying True Colors. The game is shorter than it implies and I feel a little betrayed and played for a fool having paid 50€ for it. Usually I don’t care about this and I rather pay full price to support a good game but here it really bothered me. Stuttering 30fps on a PS5 on top of that.
I think the original LiS was something that cannot be recreated. It was a game born from desperation and creative freedom by people who had nothing to lose. We still have that. … Expand

Going off of telltale I have not experienced any immersion breaking graphical glitches (unlike telltale games where you will have body parts/ weapons fading through clothing etc) and the game tries to keep it so that the information you need to remember is provided within each episode (with one exception), which is handy since the business model has the episodes coming out every 2 or so months. The time travel mechanics are also very fresh (and thus unclear) and makes me wonder at the possibilities for time travel in future games.
The bad: Some have pointed out issues with lip syncing but I have not noticed, also there is one exception to what I previously stated in that you do need to remember how the time travel mechanics work (which isn’t very clear in the first place) from previous episodes, for example there were two puzzles in episode 3 which had me stumped for a good 10-15 minutes each, the first puzzle relies on using time travel mechanics in an unconventional way that you may or may not figure out as the game doesn’t tell you (or if it does I don’t remember it telling me which is a fault in clarity and guiding the player as several others have experienced this problem). The second puzzle I can’t really get into without spoiling, but it was a failure in terms of game design, but not one that relies on the time travel mechanics.
The ugly: Now for the business model, I abhor this business model (the episodic business model) and is one of the oldest tricks in the book in terms of television, it makes you want the next episode encourages you constantly thinking about it throughout the weekly, month;y or yearly, release schedule. This is a common marketing ploy used to keep you thinking about a product and is very effective in making you want more. However I am still willing to give this game a 10, which I suppose speaks to its effectiveness.

PS: one point for story and engaging you to use your other senses. Fun game: If you close your eyes, you won’t see the graphical glitches and will tickle your imagination instead! … Full Review »

The David «puzzle» is a complete joke, it has the most warped logic as to what will make a difference and is frustrating in all the ways a good puzzle shouldn’t be. Going through an apocalyptic Arcadia Beach was cool to begin with until the puzzles for saving people started kicking in. I honestly didn’t see the point of saving anyone beyond the people in the diner since Max was obviously not going to let this future stay (more on that later). The «dream» sequence was also something that started out interesting and had a few highlights even later on that do a good job of showing Max’s insecurities but it drags on FAR to long, especially the walking down memory lane with Chloe part.
And the ending. My god the ending. This ending is the personification of your choices having no meaning. This is mass effect levels of disappointment except with one less option. Time is depicted as a thinking force that is actively out to hunt down Chloe since she is «destined to die». but she never would have been saved in the first place if time had never given Max her power? Max has visions of the storm BEFORE she has her first time travel incident, before she even saves Chloe. Also, when Max goes back in time and saves William from dying on the day he was supposed to the storm never came at him like a bat out of hell. It seems to still be coming years later but why did he get a delay when Chloe didn’t? Is the storm really just about teaching Max a lesson? A lesson Max. wouldn’t really have needed to learn had she not received these powers in the first place?
This ending reeks of plotholes, invalidates all of your previous decisions no matter what path you go down and yet people still praise it. I can only assume they are blinded by «feels» as I might have been years ago when I was fresh to the story driven game genre and while I did find one of the endings to be particularly sad the path leading up to it had me feeling more upset and betrayed than anything else.
I might have given this episode a 7/10 and the series as a whole a solid 8 if not 9 had the ending been even just decent, but I can’t stress enough how important an ending is to a game based around telling a story. Overall I give this episode a 3 for all the reasons I stated above, the only things saving it from any lower is some interesting and well-handled scenes and imagery. For the series as a whole I give it a 6/10. I would no longer refer this series to someone based on it being an excellent game in it’s genre, I would only refer it to someone who has already played a lot of adventure games and was just looking for more. … Expand
I had high expectations for this final episode. Some were fulfilled, some were not. There are 2 or 3 sequences which are looking like «flood» in this episode. There are not necessary, it sounds fake. But, otherwise, the final plot with the murderer (no spoil :p) is well managed. And the end is a cruel dilemma. *shared a tear*

Life is Strange has a great soundtrack, too. This fifth episode has nice songs too.
Definitively a great game. I love it. Thank you DontNod. … Expand
It’s like Mass Effect 3 all over again, minus the reapers.
Absolutely disgusting, i cannot believe i fell for it, and all the time and effort i have wasted in this just to reach to awful conclusions.
Horrible last episode and stupid endings. Way to ruin a franchise.
4/10
Now if only i could get my wasted time and money back.
This game deserves acclaim. Yes, the stealth sequence is silly, and yes, the villain’s exposition is a bit excessive, but the heart of the game is about Max’s relationships and the choices she has to make. People have complained about the last choice you have to make, but I think the developers have done something quite clever here.

It’s not clear if Max knows at the end that she even has time-traveling powers. The entire game seems to be about Max coming to terms with and accepting Chloe’s death. It’s a game about loss, denial, mourning, acceptance, and maturity. It is truly a coming-of-age story, and it’s beautifully done. … Expand
One of the best endings of the game. Wonderful hipster story of little girl Max. Interesting way to show time in different dimensions!
ha ha P.S. I chose left option 😉
As the conclusion of Max’s story comes to a close, the themes of lifelong friendships and destiny come full circle and the game ends with those ideas hammered in your head, and most truly as people have said, the ending is polarizing. What cannot be debated however is how the rest of the episode is panned out, many of the sections of the game not meshing or congealing with what the other As the conclusion of Max’s story comes to a close, the themes of lifelong friendships and destiny come full circle and the game ends with those ideas hammered in your head, and most truly as people have said, the ending is polarizing. What cannot be debated however is how the rest of the episode is panned out, many of the sections of the game not meshing or congealing with what the other episodes excelled on. Gone are the well paced events that drive the story. In the beginning of the game Max picks up right from where she left off, in the clutches off the supposed antagonist. While I was concerned over the tone shift at the final quarter of Episode 4, they handled it well without being overbearing. The villain in the first 30 minutes could hardly be more «psychopath murder villain» token. He hardly adds to the plot and is just there to give Max a situation of peril. He’s bland to put it simply. What hurts however is the whole sequence in the Dark Room, where much of your time is spent listening to the token dialogue and minimal interactivity, it’s painfully slow for what should have been an explosive start.
LiS really utilized the reverse time mechanic very well even for the most menial of tasks throughout the first four episodes, but in EP5, Max uses it for simple, but awful stealth sections, trial and error (in a bad way) fight scenes, and meaningless choices. And speaking of meaningless choices, Polarized probably summed it up the best. It’s easy to understand that DontNod aren’t big time developers and not everything will see come to a close, but absolutely everything, Rachel’s story, Victoria’s fate, Nathan’s fate, Max’s powers, the storm, and even Jefferson’s motives, see little to no closure whatsoever in addition to the few dozen other choices that you have made throughout the series. If you played LiS’s last 5 minutes, you would’ve played the entire game as your choices have no effect on the binary endings, both if which sell the concept well enough, but choice is disappointingly thrown out of the window.
What really drove the events of the game was the craftsmanship of Max and Chloe’s relationship, whether platonic or romantic, there was no denying it was the driving force of the series and the reason LiS is so amazing in the first place. Here, it takes a smaller backseat to a more «meta-nightmare-introspect» of Max overusing her powers, which is best summed up with the mixed bag of a nightmare sequence. On one hand, the final sequence of the game really presents the final two choices in the game with polarizing evidence that makes the choice much tougher to swallow for many players, but getting there was a chore. LiS didn’t need to break the fourth wall b/c it had a world/atmosphere beautifully developed that was one of the main sticking points, and to abandon that in favor of an annoying stealth section paired with pseudo time travel wackiness that hurts more than peaks interest.
Chloe’s character arc, imo, is the most interesting in the game, as her tragic backstory and her relationship with Max is what drives the game forward, but the writing takes a dip. Most dialogue exchanged consists of Max prioritizing Chloe and putting her above anything else, which is compelling, but the dialogue with Jefferson, Victoria, David, Warren, and hell even herself felt lower quality. Knowing that the writing of the beautiful intro of Episode 4 has dropped is gnawing.
Other than that there exists nitpicks. The Warren romance subplot feels shoehorned in without proper context, the many red herrings the game teases like Rachel and the doe, how one ending throws logic out of the window, how Nathan’s character takes a sudden 180 turn just to satisfy fans, and the amazing music is sparse. Many can disagree on these minor infractions, but what cannot be denied is that Polarized is a disappointing conclusion to what might’ve been one of the best narratives told in gaming.
LiS is still an excellent series, and the first four episodes are some of my favorite experiences, despite them not being plot concluding as episode 5, they understood what people loved most, the gentle world building/atmosphere and the small moments between the game’s two protagonists that is among the most fleshed out in gaming. Polarized is still an emotional roller coaster in bursts, and the open ending actually works better than an overexplained one, but there was so much that could’ve been done better. As for the ending? Bae over Bay. … Expand
