Super Mario World (SNES)
Also known as: Super Mario Bros. 4: Super Mario World (JP)
Developer: Nintendo
Publisher: Nintendo
Platform: SNES
Released in JP: November 21, 1990
Released in US: August 13, 1991
Released in EU: April 11, 1992
Super Mario World is the first Mario game on the Super NES, rushed and hacked together in time for release.
Despite that, it’s considered a high point of the franchise, partly due to the ridiculous amount of non-linearity and secrets within the levels. Also, Yoshi.

Sub-Pages
Unused Sound
Is it exactly the same sound, or does it just sound very similar?
This unused sound was later used in Yoshi’s Island for when you hit Expansion Blocks or jump on Fat Guys.
Unused Level Modes
Layer 1 horizontal into Layer 2 vertical
When this object is put into a level, the level will start out with a horizontal Layer 1 section, then transition into a vertical Layer 2 section. It only functions in levels with the layout mode set to 05 or 06.
Translucent Levels
Level modes: 1E and 1F
The game contains two translucent level modes: one for horizontal layer 1/background levels (1E), and one for horizontal layer 1/layer 2 levels (1F). Both modes are fully functional. Their position at the end of the mode list suggests they were «hacked in» somewhat later in development.
Early screenshots showed a flooded grassy area using mode 1F, with water on one layer and ground on the other. It may have been abandoned due to the obvious lack of a background layer when using this mode, and may have prompted the later addition of a non-transparent layer 3 water mode.
Unused Background and Sprite Graphics Indexes
Object graphics indexes: A, E
Graphics-wise, index A (Switch Palace 2) is identical to index 4 (Switch Palace 1), except it uses tileset 3, which is normally used by underground levels and castles. As a result, all tileset-specific objects are scrambled, making the index mostly unusable.
Index E (Underground 3) is identical to indexes 3 and 9 (Underground 1 and 2), except it uses a forest/mountain background GFX bank. This would have allowed for above-ground rocky levels, similar to those of World 6 in the New Super Mario Bros. series.
Sprite graphics index: F
Index F is identical to most of the other sprite indexes, save for the SP4 GFX bank (14), which only appears in one other index (B, Switch Palace). GFX bank 14 contains the pipe, block, Bullet Bill cannon, and Yoshi Coin graphics seen in every background tileset, none of which are used by any sprite in the game. It’s possible that a set of sprite graphics existed in this bank at one point during development.
Vertical Dark BG Level
Level mode: 0D
Same as 0C (horizontal dark BG level), but uses a vertical layout.
Duplicate Horizontal Layer 2 Level
Level mode: 0F
Duplicate of level mode 01.
Unused Graphics and Objects
A gigantic number of unused graphics and objects can be found hidden in the ROM. Even more stuff from earlier builds of Super Mario World can be found in the SNES Test Program and SNES Burn-In Test Cart.
Sprite-Based Objects
Classic Piranha Plant
A classic Piranha Plant. If you’ve ever played a Mario game, you should know how this works. Its vine tile has been replaced in memory with one of the frames of Cheep Cheep flopping around on land, using the red palette instead of their normal yellow palette. Note that the upside-down variation of this is used in Vanilla Dome 3, but its stem has been made tileset-specific to the Cave object tileset, and since both Piranha Plants share their stem tilemaps, this explains why the stem of this has been moved.
An unused, yellow upward facing Piranha Plant variant was shown in a prerelease screenshot however.
There is in fact code in the game to make the stem use the same tiles as the upside-down variation, but due to a bug, it doesn’t work properly. There is an Asar patch to correct this problem.
Floating Platform
This platform will move to the right constantly once Mario lands on it. If Sprite Buoyancy is enabled in the current level, this object will act like the smaller floating platforms found in levels such as Yoshi’s Island 4.
Flying Coin
A red coin that continuously moves to the right like a P-Balloon. Collecting it will give the player five coins. Red coins would not make their official debut until Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, five years later.
Flying Mushroom
Similar to the above object, this floating «gold» (it actually uses the tan palette of the Monty Moles) mushroom gives the player an extra life.
Flying Cage
This graphically-glitched flying cage can be put into the game. Mario is automatically placed inside the cage when the level starts, and if used in conjunction with an autoscroll object will make the cage move across the level on a set path.
Interestingly, the tile numbers and proportions used to draw the wings match up with sprite graphics found in the SNES Test Program (at least for the larger tile), making this an old leftover.
Unused Chargin’ Chuck
A duplicate of the normal Chargin’ Chuck, used nowhere in the game.
Swooper Spawner
This object will spawn a bunch of Swoopers at whatever Y position it’s placed, acting much like the Boo spawner found in Ghost Houses. These Swoopers cannot be defeated and will hurt Mario if he tries jumping on them. Note that one of their two flying frames has glitched graphics, hinting that Swoopers had a tilemap change at some point in development, and the fact that jumping on them deals damage hints that they may have once been something completely different.
It should be noted that the Swoopers spawned by this object have a completely different palette than the ones used in-game; a blue and red palette is used instead of the green and orange one used by the normal Swooper objects. Curiously, later games would use the alternate coloration for Swooper, meaning that this may have been the intended palette after all.
Dummy Floating Platforms
These platforms are like the checkerboard platforms, but their sizes are 3 × 2 pixels.
Eerie Generator
Like the other spawners, this one spawns Eeries. You probably already guessed that.
Layer 2 Fall
A sprite that causes Layer 2 to fall. It also disables horizontal scrolling. Intended for use in Vertical Layer 2 Level with Layer 2 interaction (Level Mode 08).
Foreground Objects
Blue Coin
FG Object ID: 16
This acts just like a normal coin, but it’s all. blue.
Hitting a P-Switch will turn these blue coins into magenta blocks. They can still be collected like coins, since the code that makes regular coins solid does not apply to this particular object.
Global Rope
FG Object ID: 17
A horizontal rope platform resembling those found in the mountain tileset, only this one isn’t tileset specific. This shares its object ID with the 16×16 cloud platform.
Small Door
FG Object ID: 10 (Extended object)
Half-sized doors that can only be entered by Small Mario. Both normal and P-Switch versions are coded in the game.
Question Mark Block with Shell
Question Mark Blocks that contain Koopa shells are fully coded in the game! Well, not just a Koopa shell. The actual Koopa is still inside, and it will get back up if you wait too long. Unlike a normal shell, fireballs have no effect on it. This is because items from blocks or the reserve box are immune to fireballs in order to prevent the player from frying them. These blocks can be seen by using the block duplication glitch.
Empty Turn Block
FG Object ID: 2E (Extended object)
Acts like a Turn Block with an item inside, but doesn’t actually contain anything.
Bounce Block
Seaweed
FG Object ID: 81 (Extended object)
An object-ified version of the seaweed commonly seen in underwater backgrounds. This is only found in the Ghost House tileset, and was likely intended to appear in the Sunken Ghost Ship.
Grass
FG Object ID: 3F X5 where X is the object length (Plains tileset only)
In the tileset-specific object set, Bushes 4 and 5 are considered unused, although Bush 5 is finished and works fine. The graphics for it are also finished, available in the forest tileset.
Conveyor Ropes
FG Object ID: 36 X_ (Flat), 37 SS (Diagonal) (Mountain tileset only)
These are completely functional conveyor belts using special animated rope tiles. They can go either left or right, and the diagonal ones can face either direction, giving a total of six different unused ropes.
Note Block (All Sides)
FG Object ID: 27 (Extended object)
A Note Block that will bounce Mario away from all sides, not just the top, similar to the pink Note Blocks in Super Mario Bros. 3.
Log Objects
FG Object ID: 3E (Horizontal), 3F (Vertical) (Mountain tileset only)
These logs are bright yellow, and can be both horizontal and vertical.
Side Cloud Fringes
FG Object ID: 3E (Plains tileset only)
Side cloud fringes. Used nowhere in original game.
Top Cloud Fringe on white
FG Object ID: 3D X1 (Plains tileset only)
Cloud fringe inside the white tile.
Cloud Fringe edges
FG Object ID: 68-6F (Extended object)
Cloud Fringe edge tiles.
Overworld Sprites
Lakitu
This Lakitu will follow Mario around on the main overworld map, but he won’t appear on any submaps (e.g., Vanilla Dome). Lakitu can be activated by hex editing a save state and changing address 19FB from 00 to 01.
This was most probably meant to appear on levels with Lakitus in them, but it was never coded to do such. Besides that, the only Lakitus in the game appear in submaps.
Blue Jay
This odd-looking bird also follows Mario around on the overworld map, but it will also appear on submaps (except Vanilla Dome). Like the Lakitu, it can be activated by changing address 19FC in a savestate to 02.
It has been suggested that the bird was used around levels that contained the flying cage, since the mysterious winged objects holding up the cage use a blue palette.
Piranha Plant
The Classic Piranha Plant really got shafted in this game. This is a sprite meant to go on the overworld as decoration, but it’s never used.
Koopaling
Three Koopalings are actually present on the overworld map, but are never visible; the path tiles that were originally supposed to make them appear were changed into oddball corner tiles and used in the Star World. Unlike the rest of the overworld sprites, these actually had a purpose – they were to drag you into levels, much like the hands in World 8 of Super Mario Bros. 3.
The positions of the sprites (visible in Lunar Magic’s overworld editor) suggest a vastly different overworld layout at the time of their «removal» than what was seen in the final.
Other Unused Graphics
Some graphics are incorrectly displayed, such as Wendy’s bow
Hills Background Star
An animated star tile found in the hilly and Ghost House background tilesets. It’s not used in either. In the final game, a different tileset is used for starry nights.
Early Yoshi Berry
This rounder, shinier, non-animated version of the Yoshi berry is loaded into VRAM at the beginning of each level, but is immediately overwritten with the animated version, which looks much different. In fact, three different versions of the berry graphic exist in the ROM, as shown below:
Super Mario World (SNES)/Version Differences
Содержание
Title Screen
The game’s logo was redrawn for the international release. The Japanese logo is very similar to that of Super Mario Bros. 3, featuring much larger shadows and smaller Os than the international version. The international release also replaced the unique trademark symbol with standard blue letters. The wooden border was given more detail, and the copyright information was updated as well. Since the European Rev 1 release displays all 239 scanlines, the border was extended vertically. Interestingly, this returns the height of the European title screen border to that of the 1989 build.
Each version handles files with 96 goals differently. The Japanese version doesn’t mark this with anything special, the North American version denotes this with a star, and while the original European version handled it like the North American version, the Rev 1 ROMs gives the 96 a blue palette.
In addition to these changes, the intro screen upon starting a new game dissolves automatically in the Japanese version after the jingle has ended. In other versions, the player can let the text box remain on screen until a button is pressed. This also applies to the text in the Switch Palaces.

---|---|
Some of the letters of the file select font were redrawn for the international versions. This applies to the letters A and B, and the numbers 1 and 2.
Dolphins!
In the Japanese version, it is possible for Yoshi to eat the dolphins used as platforms. The US and European versions of the game both edit the dolphins’ code so that Yoshi cannot eat them.
This change was (likely unintentionally) undone for all versions of the Game Boy Advance port.
Graphics Changes
In addition to the standard translation of Yoshi’s name, the international version also adds some shading to the sign.

More localization changes to the graphics.

And again. The lights to the side were also spread further apart to squeeze in the new name.

---|---|
Oddly enough, two of Princess Peach’s sprites look less polished in the international version — one that is used when she walks over to Mario after defeating Bowser (though not when she arrives at Yoshi’s house after the credits) and one used when she kisses Mario. The latter graphic appears to be based on an earlier version.
Level Changes
A few changes were made to the original version’s levels to make the game easier. The GBA port retains these changes for all versions.
Donut Plains 2
An extra Yellow exclamation block was added to the beginning of the stage, most likely to make it easier.
Donut Secret House
The walls at the end of the two main rooms were extended a bit to fill the whole screen.
Vanilla Dome 1
This turn block with a feather in it is a normal turn block in the Japanese release.
Lemmy’s Castle
The time limit was changed from 300 seconds to 400 seconds in the international versions.
Chocolate Island 3
The secret exit for Chocolate Island 3 (required to move forward in the game) was made a bit more obvious by adding two more arrow signs.
Ghost Ship
The three 1-up mushrooms at the bottom of the Ghost Ship are not present in the Japanese version.
Funky
There are only 3 green berries in the Japanese version. The international versions changed 6 of the red berries to green berries, bringing the total up to 9; this resulted (for 20 seconds per berry), in 60 seconds in the Japanese release, and 180 seconds in the international releases.

---|---|
International |
Engrish in the Japanese version was fixed for the International release. This change moves the words «YOU ARE» further to the left as a result.
Special World Course Names
In the Japanese version, there are only four unique course names (each on consecutive courses), instead of using 1980s slang words.
Japan | International | |
---|---|---|
おたのしみコース (Enjoyment Course) | Gnarly | Tubular |
マリオスタッフもビックリコース (Even the Mario Staff Is Surprised Course) | Way Cool | Awesome |
スペシャリストのためのコース (Course for the Specialists) | Groovy | Mondo |
チャンピオンシップのコース (Championship Course) | Outrageous | Funky |
Map Changes
The digits in the Japanese version’s level names use the same graphics as the lives counter. In the international versions, the numbers are part of the font.
Japan | International |
---|---|
Four levels in the Japanese version have extraneous numbers that were removed from other versions of the game:
Cheese Bridge Course 1
(Cheese Bridge Area)
Rice Cracker Mountain Course 1
(Cookie Mountain)
Lost Woods Secret Course 1
(Forest Secret Area)
Chocolate Island Secret Course 1
(Chocolate Island Secret)
Pressing L and R to reenter beaten castles/fortresses doesn’t work in the Japanese version.

Nintendo Super System Differences
The version of Super Mario World released for the Nintendo Super System got some minor tweaks to fit better as an arcade game.
Virtual Console Differences
In the ROM released on Wii Virtual Console (and all subsequent rereleases), three shades of blue are markedly brighter and less saturated in the global palette, making them closer to periwinkle than navy. This is likely due to the Switch Palaces—all three shades are used by the stripes on the walls, ceiling, and floors, and in the hallways at the end of the stages this texture covers most of the screen. The lighter colors are most likely an attempt to minimize the risk of seizures should the player enter this area running.

Mario, Luigi and Yoshi set out to save Princess Toadstool and Yoshi’s dinosaur friends, exploring Dinosaur Land for Bowser and his Koopalings. To aid him, Yoshi gives Mario a cape as they begin their journey. Mario and Luigi continue to follow Bowser, defeating the Koopalings in the process, and save all of Yoshi’s dinosaur friends. They eventually make it to Bowser’s castle, where they fight him in a final battle. They defeat Bowser and save the Princess, restoring peace to Dinosaur Land. [3]
Gameplay [ ]
Super Mario World is a two-dimensional platform game in which the player controls the on-screen protagonist (either Mario or Luigi) from a third-person perspective. The game shares similar gameplay mechanics with previous titles in the series—Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, and Super Mario Bros. 3—but introduces several new elements. In addition to the running and jumping moves found in past games, the player can float with the aid of special items and execute new types of jumps such as the spin jump. [4]
Mario riding Yoshi.
The new suit in the game is the cape feather, which gives Mario a cape and allows him to fly. This suit is also similar to the Racoon Suit from Super Mario Bros. 3 in terms of gameplay mechanics but with a few alterations: you can now hold the B button to fly when Mario is able to do so, and can glide using the cape as a sail. As in Super Mario Bros. 3, Mario can only fly for a limited amount of time, but with the cape can glide indefinitely.
Although Mario and Luigi must generally navigate through seven worlds to reach the end of the game, the player can beat the game much faster by using the Star Road routes. In addition, there are a number of levels that have hidden exits, and as a result there exist several ways for Mario to navigate to Bowser’s castle. Furthermore, the exploration of these secret stages lead to stages which while not necessary to the main plot, provide the gamer with more playing experience, such as Special World. Completion of Special World permanently alters some sprites and the overworld map’s colour scheme. Template:Fact

File name | Date | Graphic | Comments |
---|---|---|---|
kuppa-1.OBJ | 06 October 1989 17:58 | Early animations of Morton, Roy, and Ludwig with simpler shading. Morton and Roy don’t breathe fire in the final game, but the appropriate graphics still exist in the ROM. | |
kuppa-0.OBJ | 06 October 1989 17:58 | Animations of four of the Koopalings. In the final game, none of them have fire-breathing animations, while Lemmy and Wendy don’t stand upright during their boss fight. | |
map-obj.OBJ | 25 October 1989 10:43 | Mario riding a cloud on the world map. This might have been Jugem’s Cloud from Super Mario Bros. 3, where it was used to skip a level. | |
one-chr-kun.OBJ | 09 November 1989 20:03 | An unknown 1-tile-sized green creature climbing up a block. | |
bul-kuppa-down.OBJ | 16 November 1989 13:38 | Chargin’ Chuck originally had a unique animation for getting hit from the side, but the body was overwritten with Super Koopa graphics. | |
footboll-kuppa.OBJ | 30 November 1989 16:08 | A dazed-looking Chargin’ Chuck with sparkles around him, most likely for whenever the player would jump on him. | |
The clapping animation had smaller hands. | |||
A Chargin’ Chuck throwing a Beach Koopa, which might have overwritten something else that was in that spot. | |||
A turning animation. | |||
kame-houdai-chr-C.OBJ | 23 January 1990 09:48 | A small, walking cannon. A similar enemy, known as a «Kaboomba» (Taihōkun in Japanese), ended up being in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island. | |
The same small cannon enemy, as well as a larger one. They shoot out Koopa shells. Cannons that shoot shells would later be implemented in Super Mario Maker. | |||
A wind-up key likely meant to be attached to the cannons, although it looks huge compared to the small cannon. | |||
player-pouse.OBJ | 29 January 1990 15:34 | A sheet of early Mario sprites with a slightly smaller hat. | |
Sprites of Raccoon Mario, a powerup from Super Mario Bros. 3 that was replaced by what would ultimately become the Cape. These graphics are similar to those shown here, but they aren’t exactly the same, as the color of the hat’s brim is different. | |||
kirai-chr-c.OBJ | 28 February 1990 11:48 | According to the file name, these are animations for a naval mine object. They seem to be attached to an early version of the midpoint, although this could be a placeholder or another case of overwritten graphics. Another, similar object ended up being implemented into Super Mario 64, where it was once again scrapped. | |
player-musasabi-Q-X-new.OBJ | 04 March 1990 19:48 | An animation of Mario flying without a Cape. A near-identical sprite still exists in the final game, albeit unused. | |
An animation of Raccoon Mario flying, an ability that would ultimately be given to the Cape. The raccoon ears and tail are separate sprites. | |||
player-musasabi-1-Q-X-1W-kaiten.OBJ | 07 March 1990 15:27 | More complete flying animations for Raccoon Mario that include frames with his hands on his head. | |
player-musasabi-1-Q-X-1W.OBJ | 07 March 1990 15:29 | The same animation without the Raccoon attachments. | |
player-musasabi-QX1W-met.OBJ | 10 March 1990 15:26 | The Raccoon form was replaced by Cape Mario, who originally wore a helmet. | |
player-mant-QX0W-met.OBJ | 10 March 1990 19:56 | More animations of the helmet-wearing Cape Mario. It seems that the Cape did not yet inflate while flying at this point in development. | |
player-hane-QX0W-hane.OBJ | 13 March 1990 21:18 | Another potential replacement to the Raccoon form that depicts Mario wearing wings. A similar powerup, the Wing Cap, would later be implemented in Super Mario 64. | |
player-mant-QX1W-mant.OBJ | 13 March 1990 21:18 | Cape Mario’s helmet was removed at this point. Mario himself has a slightly bigger hat here compared to the final version. | |
player-hane-TEST-0.OBJ | 14 March 1990 11:34 | More animations of the winged Mario power-up. | |
player-nin-nin-0.OBJ | 17 March 1990 17:41 | The cape was made to inflate while flying, though the cape itself is much smaller here than in the final game. The palette file player-ninnin.COL depicts Mario with a unique green-and-red palette. | |
kuppa-car.OBJ | 12 April 1990 14:46 | Several completely-unused Bowser cars, which may have been early concepts of the “Koopa Clown Car” hence the name. | |
kuppa-k.OBJ | 28 May 1990 11:56 | An animation of Bowser looking around and laughing. | |
shoulder-attack-bul.OBJ | 30 May 1990 11:19 | A Chargin’ Chuck, in its blue palette casually walking rather than charging. | |
same-chr-M.OBJ | 21 June 1990 13:49 | A shark enemy that was most likely an early version of Blargg. The animation implies that this enemy would have had its dorsal fin sticking out, rather than eyes peeking out of lava. | |
kuppa-chr-I.OBJ | 26 June 1990 13:07 | An animation of Bowser turning in the Koopa Clown Car. The final game does not have a turning frame. The propeller also resembles a wind-up key here. | |
A crouching Bowser looking around his surroundings. | |||
doragon-house-demo.OBJ | 11 July 1990 17:18 | A cut elderly Yoshi with animations for walking and talking. It was possibly intended to be used in Yoshi’s House as an NPC. | |
shiro-noko-etc.OBJ | 16 July 1990 14:09 | The Snake Block originally had graphics for large blocks on each end. | |
shiro-end-demo-zoom.OBJ | 10 August 1990 01:26 | Animations for a castle destruction cutscene that sees Mario traveling in and out of the foreground. |

| Various animations of Mario riding an early version of Yoshi. It’s more evident that Mario is hitting Yoshi in the head here. | ||||
An unknown creature dancing and on a row of Brick Blocks, shaking it in the process. | |||||||
chr-stock-2-minidragon-1.OBJ | 12 July 1990 10:44 | An animation of Yoshi eating a yellow shell. | |||||
chr-stock-3-imomushi.OBJ | 12 July 1990 10:44 |
| An early version of a Wiggler walking. It has a cone on its head instead of a flower like the final version. | ||||
chr-stock-7.OBJ | 12 July 1990 10:44 | An unknown large bird flying. | |||||
Animated water. | |||||||
An animation of Mario with a red hat brim swimming. | |||||||
chr-stock-8-parakuri.OBJ | 12 July 1990 10:44 |
| The parachuting Galoomba had a snappier-looking animation compared to the final, though it has one unique sprite of the Galoomba rotated more outward. | ||||
A baby Yoshi specifically eating what seems to be some kind of blue Para-beetle, which never did make it into the final game as an enemy either. | |||||||
chr-stock-8-uni.OBJ | 12 July 1990 10:44 | Different iterations of the Urchin, with the numbered animation frames marked in the corners. | |||||
A very early version of an urchin. This appearance is closer to how real sea urchins look (thin spikes, black appearance). |

luiji | 28 Jun 1989 22:24 | Very early versions of Mario and Luigi, the latter of which originally had unique graphics instead of being a palette swap of Mario. Some of Mario’s sprites seem to be the very same being shown off here and here. Also, a Lakitu with a square cloud, that is more reminiscent of its appearance in previous Mario games. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
v-ram-kabe | 02 Oct 1989 11:15 | A row of early Mario sprites farther along than those seen in luiji.CGX. The most noticeable difference is Mario’s hat, which has a red brim rather than the black brim of the final. These can be seen in the Ghost House pre-release screenshot and some of the Castle screenshots. «Kabe» means «wall» in Japanese. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

v-ram-mode-7-peach-test | 30 Aug 1990 21:21 | Unique sprites of Mario standing up straight, curiously capless too. Most likely intended for the cutscene after Bowser’s defeat, due to these being grouped with Peach sprites. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
MARI-CORE-luiji | 19 Jul 1993 14:17 | A scratchpad of sprite data for Luigi’s distinct graphics implemented in Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World. This sheet is interesting for seemingly depicting Luigi giving the finger. It could, however, just be a thumbs-up. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The flagship product at the launch of the Super NES, Super Mario World showed off the system. The game was a pack in almost every region, and ultimately would drive sales of the system. This Mario game featured Yoshi, the green dinosaur that would eat almost anything. Mario also gained the ability to glide with a magic cape. This is the first Mario game that featured more than one exit in levels, which added to the replay value. In total, there are 96 different exits to find. -Made the cover of Nintendo Power issue 28 (September 1991)

Super Mario World (SNES)Also known as: Super Mario Bros. This unused sound was later used in Yoshi’s Island for when you hit Expansion Blocks or jump on Fat Guys. Translucent LevelsLevel modes: 1E and 1F Early screenshots showed a flooded grassy area using mode 1F, with water on one layer and ground on the other. It may have been abandoned due to the obvious lack of a background layer when using this mode, and may have prompted the later addition of a non-transparent layer 3 water mode. Unused Background and Sprite Graphics IndexesObject graphics indexes: A, E Index E (Underground 3) is identical to indexes 3 and 9 (Underground 1 and 2), except it uses a forest/mountain background GFX bank. This would have allowed for above-ground rocky levels, similar to those of World 6 in the New Super Mario Bros. series. Sprite-Based ObjectsClassic Piranha PlantA classic Piranha Plant. Floating PlatformThis platform will move to the right constantly once Mario lands on it. If Sprite Buoyancy is enabled in the current level, this object will act like the smaller floating platforms found in levels such as Yoshi’s Island 4. Fliegende MünzeA red coin that continuously moves to the right like a P-Balloon. Collecting it will give the player five coins. Red coins would not make their official debut until Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, five years later. Flying MushroomÄhnlich wie im Objekt oben gibt das schwebende goldene Pilz dem Spieler ein extra Leben. Flying CageThis graphically-glitched flying cage can be put into the game. Unused Chargin’ ChuckA duplicate of the normal Chargin’ Chuck, used nowhere in the game. Swooper SpawnerThis object will spawn a bunch of Swoopers at whatever Y position it’s placed, acting much like the Boo spawner found in Ghost Houses. Dummy schwebende PlattformenDiese Plattformen sind wie die Schachbrett Plattformen, aber deren größe sind 3 x 2 Pixel. Eerie GeneratorLike the other spawners, this one spawns Eeries. You probably already guessed that. Layer 2 FallA sprite that causes Layer 2 to fall. It also disables horizontal scrolling. Intended for use in Vertical Layer 2 Level with Layer 2 interaction (Level Mode 08). Vordergrund ObjekteBlaue Münze
Es verhält sich wie eine normale Münze, aber sie ist blau. Hitting a P-Switch will turn these blue coins into magenta blocks. They can still be collected like coins, since the code that makes regular coins solid does not apply to this particular object. Global Rope
A horizontal rope platform resembling those found in the mountain tileset, only this one isn’t tileset specific. This shares its object ID with the 16×16 cloud platform. Small Door
Half-sized doors that can only be entered by Small Mario. Both normal and P-Switch versions are coded in the game. Question Mark Block with ShellQuestion Mark Blocks that contain Koopa shells are fully coded in the game! An object-ified version of the seaweed commonly seen in underwater backgrounds. This is only found in the Ghost House tileset, and was likely intended to appear in the Sunken Ghost Ship. Grass
In the tileset-specific object set, Bushes 4 and 5 are considered unused, although Bush 5 is finished and works fine. The graphics for it are also finished, available in the forest tileset. Conveyor Ropes

They can go either left or right, and the diagonal ones can face either direction, giving a total of six different unused ropes. Overworld SpritesLakituThis Lakitu will follow Mario around on the main overworld map, but he won’t appear on any submaps (e.g., Vanilla Dome). Lakitu can be activated by hex editing a save state and changing address 19FB from 00 to 01. This was most probably meant to appear on levels with Lakitus in them, but it was never coded to do such. Besides that, the only Lakitus in the game appear in submaps. Blue JayThis odd-looking bird also follows Mario around on the overworld map, but it will also appear on submaps (except Vanilla Dome). Like the Lakitu, it can be activated by changing address 19FC in a savestate to 02. It has been suggested that the bird was used around levels that contained the flying cage, since the mysterious winged objects holding up the cage use a blue palette. Piranha PlantThe Classic Piranha Plant really got shafted in this game. This is a sprite meant to go on the overworld as decoration, but it’s never used. KoopalingThree Koopalings are actually present on the overworld map, but are never visible; the path tiles that were originally supposed to make them appear were changed into oddball corner tiles and used in the Star World. In fact, three different versions of the berry graphic exist in the ROM, as shown below: Super Mario World (television series)This article is about the television series. For the SNES game, see Super Mario World.
Super Mario World was the third and final of DIC Entertainment’s animated Super Mario trilogy, loosely based on the game of the same name, premiering a month after its North American release. The cartoon chronicles the adventures of Mario, Luigi and Princess Toadstool in Dinosaur Land. Yoshi and several new characters, such as Oogtar the caveboy, make an appearance as well. Super Mario World was the last of DIC’s Super Mario cartoons and originally aired from September 14th, 1991 to December 7th, 1991. The series lasted for only 13 episodes. ContentsOverview [ edit ]Sometime after the events of The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, having banished King Bowser Koopa, the Koopalings, and their minions from the Mushroom Kingdom for good, Princess Toadstool, Mario, and Luigi decide to take a vacation to the Dinosaur World. However, King Koopa and his minions manage to follow them there and kidnap the princess yet again. After adventuring and befriending Yoshi, Mario and Luigi managed to rescue Princess Toadstool from King Koopa’s Neon Castle and subsequently decided to stay in Dinosaur Land’s Dome City with the cave-people. Several episodes of Super Mario World often had Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Princess Toadstool, and occasionally Oogtar, a show-exclusive character, trying to stop the schemes of King Koopa and the Koopalings, as well as other villains such as Wizenheimer or the Dino Riders. Toad, who appeared in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! and The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, does not appear in the series (nor did he appear in the game it was based on), making it the only Mario cartoon where he does not appear. Because of his absence in the show, he is replaced by Yoshi. Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, King Koopa, and the Koopalings retain their designs from The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, although the «L» on Luigi’s cap is black instead of green in early episodes, Princess Toadstool has lighter skin and blue eyes instead of black eyes, and Cheatsy’s hair is yellow/white instead of dark blue. Also, Mario and Luigi’s fire forms in the show are based on their fire from sprites from the game. Walker Boone, Tony Rosato, Tracey Moore, and Harvey Atkin reprised their roles as Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and King Koopa respectively in the show. Social issues [ edit ]Some episodes of Super Mario World can also be seen as social commentary for controversial issues, such as street gangs («Born to Ride»), addiction («Rock TV»), bullying in school («A Little Learning»), obesity and capitalism («King Scoopa Koopa»). The show also had several episodes, such as «The Wheel Thing» and «Party Line», dealing with the introduction and consequences of introducing new concepts and technologies to others without thinking ahead, in this case, the cave-people of Dome City. Differences from the game [ edit ]Super Mario World, though based on the video game of the same name, included several creative licenses. The cave people and Dome City are both introduced in the television series. Characters retained their color differences from The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! King Koopa was only once referred to as «Bowser» and the Koopalings retained their alternate names from The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3. Many locations and enemies were referred to by different names: Airing history [ edit ]Super Mario World originally aired alongside Captain N: The Game Master on NBC, where it was referred to as Super Mario Bros. 4 in end credit promos and Super Mario Bros. World in commercial bumpers. Super Mario World was also the only Mario cartoon to air in Australia on Network Ten and Cheez TV, though only on Mondays to Wednesdays on the latter. Oddly, in both the United Kingdom and Australia, the episode «King Scoopa Koopa» aired before «The Night Before Cave Christmas», due to a mishap involving the show’s production order and the production order of Captain N: The Game Master. Along with Captain N, Super Mario World was one of the last cartoons to air on NBC as that network began to gradually phase out cartoons on Saturdays. Both were canceled by the fall of 1992 and replaced with a Saturday version of Today, along with their TNBC block, which included such shows as Saved by the Bell and California Dreams. In the mid-nineties, the Super Mario World episodes aired on USA Network, without the Captain N episodes. The adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, another cartoon based on a video game franchise by DIC, and Street Fighter, based on the popular fighting game, were also aired on USA Network around the same time. Due to the nature of its production, Super Mario World is actually one half of a series entitled Captain N and the New Super Mario World, which also consists of the third season of Captain N: The Game Master. Although the «New» suffix was used to promote the Super Mario World game when the show first aired, it is part of the series’ proper title, and was never dropped. An episode of this half hour series consists of a Super Mario World cartoon and either a Captain N cartoon, or a second Super Mario World cartoon. Due to legal issues, the third season episodes of Captain N and the Super Mario World episodes are inseparable, and have to be released on DVD in the same set. This also explains why the first two seasons of Captain N: The Game Master were released in a «complete series» set; the third season is part of a separate show. The show can also be seen on Starz Encore’s Kids and Family channel on weekday afternoons since 2019 as well as on its WildBrain YouTube channels and Paramount+. In the Middle East, Super Mario World aired on Spacetoon along with Earthworm Jim starting in 2005, but in 2007, both it and Earthworm Jim were replaced by The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3. Super Mario World also aired on the Middle East version of Nickelodeon but is no longer on that channel’s schedule. It was also still airing on Spacetoon as of January 1, 2011, along with Earthworm Jim, The Land Before Time, Make Way for Noddy, and The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! after Spacetoon English shut down. Since 2009, the show sometimes airs on KidsCo in Australia and since 2010 it has aired on the same channel in Spain and Portugal. It has also aired on Boomerang in South Korea. [1] Distribution [ edit ]The Super Mario World episode «The Night Before Cave Christmas» was released sometime in 1993 for a VHS tape entitled «Super Mario Bros. Super Christmas Adventures»; along with «Koopa Klaus». Currently, DVDs of every single Super Mario World episode are available in Australia; the episode «A Little Learning» was also available on a VHS tape for a time in the UK. Due to complications involving the use of Yoshi, it was originally thought that DVD box sets of Super Mario World weren’t going to be made. However, those issues were resolved, and Shout! Factory has released a box set containing the complete series, along with the third season of Captain N: The Game Master. The DVD was discontinued in 2012, along with The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3: The Complete Series and The Super Mario Bros. Super Show Volume 1 and 2, when Cookie Jar Entertainment merged with DHX Media. Voice cast [ edit ]The voice acting was done in Canada. Staff [ edit ]As with the previous show, Super Mario World was produced and directed by John Grusd, with DiC president Andy Heyward acting as the executive producer and creative supervisor. Animation was done by the Chinese studio Pacific Rim Productions, Inc. rather than Sei Young Animation Co., Ltd., except for the opening which was done by Canvas. Inc. The series is coproduced by Reteitalia S.P.A. and Telecinco. Production [ edit ]Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 (or Super Mario Advance 2: Super Mario World) is a remake of Super Mario World made for the Game Boy Advance and developed by Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development (EAD). It is the second title in the Super Mario Advance series and was released in Japan on December 14, 2001; in North America on February 11, 2002; and in Europe and Australia in April 2002. There are numerous gameplay, visual, and level design changes from the original game, but the most noticeable alteration is making the game for one player only instead of two. However, Luigi is still playable but this time as an alternate character. The game was successful, selling over 5,460,000 copies worldwide, with at least 3,290,000 copies in the United States. [citation needed] The classic game Mario Bros. has been included in the game (like the other Super Mario Advance games), with multiplayer. Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 was rereleased on the Wii U’s Virtual Console in Japan on April 3, 2014; in North America on December 25, 2014; and in Europe and Australia in March 2016. ContentsGameplay and premise [ edit ]The gameplay and plot are the same as in the original version of Super Mario World for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Players take control of either Mario or Luigi, adventuring through Dinosaur Land to foil the evil King Bowser and his Koopalings, who have kidnapped Princess Toadstool (also known as Princess Peach) and imprisoned seven of the native Yoshis in eggs. Players navigate through the game’s worlds via an overworld map featuring paths connecting to action panels, Fortresses, etc. The playfields of the levels are populated with obstacles and enemies, with the player traversing the stage by making use of basic techniques from the NES Mario titles, like running, jumping, swimming, dodging, and defeating enemies; and those new to the original Super Mario World, like the Spin Jump. The same power-ups from the original release are retained, including the basic power-ups of the Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, and Starman; and the Cape Feather, introduced in the original game. The Super Mushroom increases Mario or Luigi’s size; the Fire Flower gives him a fireball attack; the Starman makes him invincible; and the Cape Feather allows him to fly and to attack enemies by spinning. Also returning is Yoshi, the Mario brothers’ sidekick and riding mount from the original Super Mario World, who is able to eat most enemies and gain special abilities from holding colored Koopa shells in his mouth. The game also contains blue, yellow, and red Yoshis, which become available to Mario and Luigi from any level in the game after he has found their eggs in Star World and fed them enough enemies or objects to grow them to maturity. When holding any Koopa shell in his mouth, these Yoshis gain the ability that corresponds to its own color, in addition to that of the shell. Outside of the main mode of play, players may also play a remake of the Mario Bros. game, included in all the other games in the Super Mario Advance series, which supports anywhere from one to four players. Controls [ edit ]The Wii U allows controls to be customized Game Boy Advance [ edit ]Wii U (default) [ edit ]Changes from the original game [ edit ]Super Mario Advance 2 has considerably less significant differences from the game it ports than the first Super Mario Advance. Nevertheless, the game contains many gameplay, visual, and other changes from the original Super Mario World, which are explained as follows. Gameplay [ edit ]In this version, the color of the Yoshi that hatches from eggs found in Prize Blocks depends on two things: whether a Yoshi of a particular color has been found in Star World and fed enough enemies or objects to grow to maturity, and which power-up Mario or Luigi currently has. The possible outcomes are as follows (forms written in italics will always spawn that particular Yoshi, assuming it has already been found and fed in Star World, whereas forms not written in italics will randomly spawn a Yoshi among those which have already been unlocked): Also, Yoshi will lay an egg containing an item after eating ten red berries. The SNES version always produced a Super Mushroom, though in this version, the item depends on the Yoshi’s color: Other [ edit ]Level design [ edit ]The design of certain levels is altered as follows: Art [ edit ]Some colors, text, and animations are altered as follows: Introduction [ edit ]A pre-title introductory cinema scene is added, where Mario, Luigi, and the princess arrive in Dinosaur Land by hot-air balloon, the brothers fly around Yoshi’s Island with capes, and upon their return to the landing spot they find the princess missing and become puzzled; if the player has won the final battle, the ending of the cutscene instead shows the princess being escorted by a Yoshi while Mario and Luigi fly behind. Two other cinematics are added, for when the player has collected all the Dragon Coins and when all the levels have been cleared. Luigi is added to the intro scene where it is stated that the player is in Dinosaur Land and Bowser has kidnapped the princess; he is shown pacing back and forth while Mario is looking up. Magikoopa is added to the «cast list» of enemies after the credits. Cutscenes [ edit ]Following clearing a castle stage, the text is changed as follows: Ending [ edit ]The ending is also altered significantly, as follows: Sound [ edit ]The soundtrack has been changed as follows: Reception [ edit ]Development and staff [ edit ]As shown in published screenshots, an early build retained the original game’s HUD, which was altered in the final to fit in better with the GBA’s screen resolution. [3] Even the original test levels were left in the game; they can be accessed via a glitch (see below). The game was produced by Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, and directed by Hiroyuki Kimura with supervision from original SNES directors Takashi Tezuka and Toshihiko Nakago. The new graphics were designed by Emi Tomita, and the new audio cues were composed by Yasushi Ida and Taiju Suzuki. Glitches [ edit ]These glitches only occur in Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2. For a list of glitches that are exclusive to the original Super Mario World or occur in both versions of the game, see here. Even more stuff from earlier builds of Super Mario World can be found in the SNES Test Program and SNES Burn-In Test Cart. Sprite-Based ObjectsClassic Piranha PlantA classic Piranha Plant. Floating PlatformThis platform will move to the right constantly once Mario lands on it. If Sprite Buoyancy is enabled in the current level, this object will act like the smaller floating platforms found in levels such as Yoshi’s Island 4. Flying CoinA red coin that continuously moves to the right like a P-Balloon. Collecting it will give the player five coins. Red coins would not make their official debut until Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, five years later. Flying MushroomSimilar to the above object, this floating «gold» (it actually uses the tan palette of the Monty Moles) mushroom gives the player an extra life. Flying CageThis graphically-glitched flying cage can be put into the game. Dummy Floating PlatformsThese platforms are like the checkerboard platforms, but their sizes are 3 × 2 pixels. Foreground ObjectsBlue Coin
This acts just like a normal coin, but it’s all. blue. Hitting a P-Switch will turn these blue coins into magenta blocks. They can still be collected like coins, since the code that makes regular coins solid does not apply to this particular object.
[1] It features attractions, products, and themes mainly based on the Mario franchise. The slogan of Super Nintendo World is «#We Are Mario!! アソビの本能、解き放て! (Asobi no honnō, tokihanate!, Release your play instinct!)» The area has also been announced to open in Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Orlando, and Universal Studios Singapore. [2] Super Nintendo World will open in Universal Studios Hollywood in early 2023. [3] While visiting the area, attendees can wear a magnetic wristband known as a «Power-Up Band» (originally unhyphenated), [4] which allows them to interact with various features in the area, compete with other attendees, and keep track of scores and items (such as coins and stamps) earned from such activities. [5] [4] The Power-Up Band also connects to the Super Nintendo World section of the official Universal Studios Japan smartphone application found on the App Store and Google Play Store, which contains a map of the area and its key locations, and allows the user to view their rankings and add, remove, and edit bands. There are six different designs of the Power-Up Band, all based on emblems of Mario characters: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Toad, and Yoshi. Power-Up Bands can also be used as amiibo. Of the Mario-themed elements present in Super Nintendo World, it features both a Mario Kart-themed attraction titled Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge [6] and a Yoshi-themed attraction titled Yoshi’s Adventure. [7] Peach’s Castle, Bowser’s Castle, and a red Toad House are also present. In regards to decorative features, many Mario objects can be seen throughout the area (some of which move, such as coins and Cloud Lifts), [8] though much of the environmental aesthetic is based on that of Super Mario 3D World, including the colored, diamond-patterned platforms, Piranha Creeper vine, pyramids from World 2, and most prominently the grassy platforms, which make up a tall, mountain-like structure replicating Mount Beanpole, [9] with a Goal Pole on the summit. Animatronics of various Mario characters and enemies are also present, including Yoshi and a Thwomp. [8] The area’s background music also consists of arrangements of various songs from the Mario franchise. The song «We Are Born to Play», performed by Galantis and Charli XCX, was released as a music video to promote Super Nintendo World, which depicts numerous attendees exploring a CGI-animated version of the area with many Mario characters and enemies present. Super Nintendo World temporarily closed on April 25, 2021, due to a surge in Japanese COVID-19 cases, only one month after the initial opening. [10] It was later reopened on June 1, 2021. [11] ContentsLocationsEntranceThe entrance to Super Nintendo World is a large Warp Pipe leading to the foyer of Peach’s Castle, which features the sun design on the floor and the cloud pattern on the ceiling, as well as paintings of Bob-omb Battlefield and Tiny-Huge Island from Super Mario 64. An open doorway leads to the main theme park area. If attendees view the paintings from the doorway, the Bob-omb and the Big Goomba morph into Bowser Jr. holding his Magic Paintbrush and Peach’s Golden Mushroom in his Junior Clown Car. «Inside the Castle Walls» can be heard in the background while inside the castle. [9] AttractionsMario Kart: Bowser’s ChallengeMario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, [3] known as Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge in Japan and simply referred to as Mario Kart in the Universal Studios Japan app, [12] is an on-rails ride based on the Mario Kart series where attendees race through a course designed by Bowser. It is located inside Bowser’s Castle. Attendees are seated in vehicles designed after the Standard Karts from Mario Kart 8, with a steering wheel included with each seat. The ride makes use of augmented reality, as attendees are equipped with AR headsets with Mario Caps for the duration of the ride. [9] Attendees travel through different environments modelled after several courses from Mario Kart 8; starting with an area that combines Bowser’s Castle and Mario Circuit, followed by 3DS Piranha Plant Slide, Dolphin Shoals, Twisted Mansion, Cloudtop Cruise, Grumble Volcano with the Bowser Monument, and N64 Rainbow Road. [13] The ride lasts for approximately five minutes, and each kart can hold up to four people (two rows of two seats). [14] Riders primarily score by firing Shells, color coded to each of the four riders, at other racers and other interactable objects as displayed through their headsets, with the final scores tallied and displayed at the conclusion of the ride. [15] The foyer of Bowser’s Castle features stairs leading up to a large Bowser Statue, while the hall leading to the ride itself features displays of the original eight cups from Mario Kart 8. There is also a large display of the Universal Cup trophy, which is designed after the Universal logo, as well as Bowser’s challenge letter next to it that reads: [9]
The queue winds through two storage rooms adorned with various Mario Kart-themed banners and signs, a Mario Kart TV broadcasting room, Bowser’s library, a boiler room that serves as a Bob-omb and Mechakoopa factory where attendees are given their AR headsets, and two Mario Kart TV briefing rooms where Lakitu provides a tutorial for the attraction’s interactive elements. [16] Music that plays in the rooms prior to the actual attraction includes the castle theme from New Super Mario Bros. Wii at the stairs, the castle theme from Super Mario World [16] and «A Boss Approaches» from Super Mario 3D World in the trophy hall, Neo Bowser City’s theme from Mario Kart 7 in the storage rooms, «Waltz of the Boos» from Super Mario Galaxy in Bowser’s library, Mario Kart TV’s theme from Mario Kart 8 in the first briefing room, an arrangement of Electrodrome’s theme from Mario Kart 8 in the second briefing room, and an arrangement of Bowser’s Castle’s theme from Mario Kart Wii in the area after the briefing rooms. [17] In the attraction itself, arrangements of Piranha Plant Slide’s theme from Mario Kart 7, Bowser’s Castle’s, Dolphin Shoals’, Twisted Mansion’s and Cloudtop Cruise’s themes from Mario Kart 8 and Rainbow Road’s theme from Mario Kart 64 play in their respective areas, while Mario Kart Stadium’s theme from Mario Kart 8 plays at the finish line. The Super Star theme from Mario Kart Wii also briefly plays during the transition to the Rainbow Road segment. [18] The ride first transports attendees over a bridge, then into a Warp Pipe tunnel through a scene with two Yoshis carrying Baby Mario and Baby Peach being pursued by Kamek and some Fly Guys, with Poochy nodding his head at passing vehicles at the exit. Additionally, another branching path within the pipe tunnel has a view out into space looking at Starship Mario. Exiting the pipe, the Yoshis arrive in a desert and jungle area, and finally to Captain Toad’s location at the end of the jungle. The ride’s queuing area features designs and murals from Yoshi’s New Island. [19] Music that plays in the attraction includes the main level theme from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island in the queuing area, the main theme from Yoshi’s Story at the bridge, the opening theme from Yoshi’s Island in the tunnel, the desert theme from New Super Mario Bros. Characters
Characters from the Mario series are abundant throughout Super Nintendo World. Most of them are animatronics, while others can be found in meet-and-greet areas. So far, the latter kind of characters known are mascots of Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad. [7] Attendees can choose to have photo opportunities with the Mario Bros. and Peach in Mario & Luigi Photo Opportunity (Japanese: マリオ&ルイージ・フォト・オポチュニティ, Mario ando Ruīji Foto Opochuniti) and Princess Peach Photo Opportunity (Japanese: プリンセスピーチ・フォト・オポチュニティ, Purinsesu Pīchi Foto Opochuniti) respectively. [34] [35] Unlike the mascots commonly used for the Mario Bros., Super Nintendo World’s Mario and Luigi’s costumes have articulated faces, allowing them to move their eyes and mouths. [9] With the exception of Toad, the mascots also can play pre-recorded voice samples. [36] [7]
Development
A partnership between Nintendo and Universal Parks & Resorts to open a Nintendo theme park area in Universal Studios Japan, Universal Studios Hollywood, and Universal Orlando was first announced on November 29, 2016. [2] On December 12, 2016, Super Nintendo World was officially announced by name, scheduled to open first in Japan in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. [37]
On June 8, 2017, construction on the first Super Nintendo World began when Universal Studios Japan held a groundbreaking ceremony, which was attended by Shigeru Miyamoto, Universal Studios Japan CEO J. L. Bonnier, and Universal Creative president Mark Woodbury. [38] A Mario Kart-themed attraction was announced in the ceremony, [39] while a teaser trailer for Super Nintendo World was released the same day. [40]
On April 3, 2019, Super Nintendo World was announced for Universal Studios Singapore by Resorts World Sentosa. [41]
During an interview with Universal Parks & Resorts CEO Tom Williams held on September 12, 2019, Williams announced that Super Nintendo World in Japan would open in Spring 2020, and that the Mario Kart ride and a Yoshi ride would be featured in the first phase. Williams also revealed information about a magnetic wristband that attendees would wear and would be used to track scores gained through rides and interactions in the area. [42]
On January 14, 2020, Universal Studios Japan held a «global kick-off presentation event» where many details regarding Super Nintendo World were announced, including the opening now being scheduled for Summer 2020, more details on the function of the wristband (now named the «Power Up Band»), the wristband designs, and the smartphone application. [5] [4] The music video for «We Are Born to Play» was also released the same day.
During a Q4 earnings conference held on January 23, 2020, Comcast executives confirmed that Super Nintendo World in Universal Orlando would be part of the upcoming Epic Universe theme park scheduled to open in 2023. [43] However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the project was delayed indefinitely. [44] Also as a result of the pandemic, the opening date for Super Nintendo World in Japan was pushed back by a few months. [45]
On October 7, 2020, Super Nintendo World in Japan was announced to open in Spring 2021. [46] In addition, a Mario Café & Store was revealed and announced to open outside of the area on October 16, 2020, ahead of its opening. [47] The exact opening date of February 4 was later announced on November 30, 2020. [48]
On December 18, 2020, Nintendo released the Super Nintendo World Direct. Hosted by Miyamoto, the video toured various parts of the park, including the entrance based off of Peach’s Castle, an underground area with Bob-ombs, and Bowser’s Castle, as well as 1-UP Factory and Kinopio’s Café and the merchandise and food offered. It also showed how Power-Up Bands are used to interact with activities in the park. [9]
On January 14, 2021, the opening was postponed to an unspecified later date as a result of a state of emergency in place in Osaka due to COVID-19. [49] On March 8, 2021, the final opening date was revealed to be March 18, 2021. [1]
On September 28, 2021, Nintendo announced that a new Donkey Kong-themed area would be added, expanding the size of Super Nintendo World by approximately 70%. The area is set to open in 2024. [50]

Super Mario (series)This article is under construction. Therefore, please excuse its informal appearance while it is being worked on. We hope to have it completed as soon as possible. This article is about the main series of Mario platform games. For the series as a whole, not limited to platformers, see Mario (franchise).
The Super Mario series, originally known as the Super Mario Bros. series and also informally called the main series or main games, is the biggest and most important sub-series of the Mario franchise. It started in 1985 with the creation of Super Mario Bros. on the Family Computer and subsequently the Nintendo Entertainment System. It has been followed by many sequels released in almost every Nintendo video game console to date, except the Game Boy Color and the Game Boy Advance, where only remakes, ports, or other spin-offs games were released and development was handled by other divisions and companies. The series features both 2D platform games, the first of which has been Super Mario Bros., as well as 3D platform games, the first of which has been Super Mario 64. Most of these games, notably excluding Super Mario Bros. 2, follow the story of Mario and, usually, his brother Luigi and sometimes his friends Toad and Yoshi, in their quest to search for and rescue Princess Peach from the clutches of Bowser, who wants to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom or another location, depending on the game. The Mario Brothers’ adventure is shown to be difficult, as they face his minions, the Koopa Troop. The series is developed by several Nintendo divisions. The main games have been developed by Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development, with the exception of the Super Mario Land titles, which were handled by Nintendo R&D 1. Following its merge with Nintendo Software Planning & Development in September 2015, the series is now handled by Nintendo Entertainment Planning & Development. In 2010, the series celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of the release of Super Mario Bros. The celebration involved a series of videos showing various tricks throughout the series’ games on the Wii’s Nintendo Channel, as well as releasing a Wii port of Super Mario All-Stars, which included a history booklet of the Super Mario series and a CD containing several songs from games in the series. In 2015, the series celebrated its thirty anniversary with the commemorative game being Super Mario Maker, a game creation platform game that allows players to create their own Mario levels by choosing between four game skins based on other Super Mario games. Special amiibo based on Mario’s classic and modern design were released as well. 2020 was the thirty-fifth anniversary with several games released, including Super Mario 3D All-Stars. NES | Owing to the Western branches of Nintendo feeling that the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 was too similar to the first game and too difficult for American players, they instead chose to port the Japanese game Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic and release it as Super Mario Bros. 2 in their markets for the NES. New species first appear in this game, including Albatoss and Shy Guys, and it introduces Wart and Birdo. Super Mario Bros. 2 is also the first game to feature four distinctly playable characters, as Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad had to save the dream world of Subcon from Wart. After fighting their way through seven strange worlds, they eventually saved Subcon, and Mario woke up from his dream. Despite being a port of a pre-existing Japanese game, the Western Super Mario Bros. 2 would eventually see release in its own right in Japan as Super Mario USA. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

NES | Another two years had passed by the time the next mainstream, non-port Mario game had been released: Super Mario Bros. 3. This was by far the most expansive Mario game on the NES, as it featured many levels, items, and enemies, and became a huge critical and commercial success. Many of the new species would become staples of the series, including Boos, Fire Piranha Plants and Dry Bones. In the story, Bowser and his seven Koopalings wreaked havoc across the Mushroom World after turning all of the Mushroom Kings into various animals. Mario and Luigi had to traverse through many worlds, castles, seas, forests, and deserts to fix the wrongs the Koopalings had caused. Eventually, the brothers reached Bowser and defeated him, rescuing Princess Toadstool once again. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Game Boy | Super Mario Land is the first Super Mario game not developed by Nintendo EAD but rather its partner division: Nintendo R&D1. The game features a similar aesthetic and gameplay to Super Mario Bros. adapting it to the limited technology of the Game Boy at the time. The game is set in the land of Sarasaland and has Mario venture through its four kingdoms to rescue its ruler Princess Daisy from the clutches of the evil alien Tatanga. This game is unique in that it features auto-scrolling shooting sections where Mario ride a submarine or plane. Although Super Mario Land and its sequel, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, were originally excluded from the main Super Mario series, they were included alongside the more traditional games for the 30th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., [3] and the history page from the Mario Portal and «The official home for Mario» websites. [4] [5] Related gamesThese original games are related to the Super Mario series, while not officially being considered part of it. Many of them feature the adventures of characters other than Mario, sometimes leading into their own series. An important case is that of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, considered by Shigeru Miyamoto as part of the core Mario series in an interview published in 2012.
